editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Batavia is unfurling plans for a Flag Day celebration that will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the patriotic observance.

The widely acknowledged “Father of Flag Day” was Bernard J. Cigrand, who lived in Batavia from 1913 to 1932 and campaigned vigorously for 30 years to create Flag Day. President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation in 1916 establishing June 14 as Flag Day. The Stars and Stripes was adapted as the national flag by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.

Now, Batavians are preparing for a two-day celebration of the American flag and Cigrand.

Details still are being hammered out by a committee of volunteers, but on June 12 – a Sunday – there will be a family-oriented celebration downtown, complete with an afternoon ice cream social, games and the creation of a giant human flag on the Houston Street hill.

Batavia Flag Day committee volunteer “We want this to be a memory for the town,” said Linda Schielke, one of the organizers of the celebration.

Then, on the evening of June 14, the community will light up the Batavia Riverwalk with 1,777 luminaria.

There will be a military band concert at the Peg Bond Center and flags everywhere, including a huge flag hanging on the Batavia Government Center building.

Central to the celebration will be efforts to educate people about Cigrand.

“Batavia is a patriotic town, and we’re proud of our heritage,” said Shirley Mott, another of the Flag Day committee volunteers.

Cigrand lived at 1184 S. Batavia Ave., in a house that still stands. He was a dentist who gave many speeches about patriotism and the flag, and for-

mally proposed a Flag Day observance in 1886 with an article in a Chicago newspaper.

Depot Museum Curator Carla Hill said the museum is preparing an exhibit on Cigrand, and that it will be open to the public on both days of the celebration.

This year’s Loyalty Day Parade, to take place May 1, also will feature a Flag Day theme.

Sponsored by Batavia Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1197, the annual parade will kick off the city’s Flag Day celebration, which will culminate with the Fourth of July fireworks show at Batavia High School.

Andy Franke, commander of the VFW post, said the parade is looking for more entries and will be encouraging parade-goers lining the route to bring flags to wave.

Good times ‘doing time’

I love my neighborhood in St. Charles, its wide yards and old oak trees. I always found it easy to forget a boy’s correctional facility lay quietly a mile away. At least until Jean Pierce, a tireless good Samaritan from my church, announced her plan for a Christmas party at that prison, for the boys who never got visitors. Something about those words, “the boys who never got visitors,” tugged at my smug, self-absorbed heart. I found myself signing up to help.

I didn’t know what to expect. In fact, I tried hard not to expect anything, because my images devolved into my shoes being stolen, my silver fillings pulled from my mouth. We church people were bringing them cookies and soda. Jean planned a game to see which boy could build the tallest gum drop and candy cane skyscraper. For God’s sake, I thought, these boys will rip us to shreds. Wave goodbye to your Ford, Kate, they will use it in their daring escape. You’ll be bound and gagged in its uncomfortably narrow luggage compartment, too.

GUEST VIEW Kate Johnson What I found instead – and it stunned me – were about 40 teenage boys, eager for any attention, grateful for cookies and determined to build the tallest gumdrop skyscraper. Several of them were readers, as there’s not much else to do with their free time.

I’m a reader, too, so we traded stories and titles happily. For some reason, boys at this jail play Scrabble. I love Scrabble even more than I love eating gumdrops I’ve pulled off skyscrapers.

The afternoon flew. When they left with their guards, one of the boys asked when I’d visit next.

In a year, I told him. This was the annual Christmas party. His face fell, so did my heart, and I murmured something about maybe an Easter party … .

So I approached Melissa Auer, the enthusiastic woman who runs

their Literacy Volunteers of Illinois’ tutoring program, known as Jump Start. “Well, we’re always looking for tutors,” I recall her saying. Swallowing hard, I signed up.

I now spend Monday evenings tutoring reading or math, to boys who want to graduate from high school or obtain a GED. The boys are polite and humble. The hardened criminals – and the Illinois Youth Center at St. Charles has them – aren’t interested in extra academic help. I get the boys who still dream of getting somewhere outside in the “real world.”

Both liberals and conservatives talk about the prison system being broken. But what we don’t see until we meet these boys is that these are children being broken. The boy I tutor now, a 17-year-old, reads avidly.

He’s bright and always respectful. If he were my son, we’d be discussing colleges. His mother never visits from the West Side of Chicago. All he misses from home is his dog. I work to fill gaps in his education, despairing that they’ll ever get filled, although he works hard and learns fast. We finish

with a board game. He presents himself well, but I’m always encouraging him to believe in himself more.

“OK,” I tell him, “you get 12 points for ‘map.’ But you’re smart ... . You can do better. Use more letters.” I tell him this repeatedly as my points mount up against him.

He finally hears me. He makes the word “zantac.” I won’t quibble about it being a name; he just scored 48 points.

“I knew you could do it! Now you know it, too!” Hunching over, he goes on to beat me by one point.

“You suck,” I complain when we’re done. “I’m never coming back.” However, internally, my heart’s bursting with pride. Because what do these boys ever win at, in real life? An argument could be made they lost the game before they even knew what it was.

He smiles, proud of himself. Then worry in his eyes as he pushes in his chair. “You’re joking, right? You’re coming back next week?”

“Oh, I’m coming back,” I say. “For revenge.”

Steven E. Gill, 47, of Earlville, passed away Monday, April 4, 2016. He was born Dec. 31, 1968, in Batavia, IL, the son of Thomas James and Nancy (nee Wicklund) Gill. He was united in marriage to Donna (nee Wassman) Peterson on May 16, 2009.

Steve and Donna had been together since 1996 before they were married in 2009.

Steve loved the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting, camping, and riding his motorcycle.

He loved flat-track racing. He and Donna loved traveling to, and camping at, many different racetracks throughout the country.

Steve was an avid cook who loved eating his own cooking as much as preparing it, as did most everyone he cooked for. Steve’s greatest joy was his wife and family.

Steve is survived by his wife, Donna; two daughters, Samantha Peterson and Melissa (Trevis) Worley; four grandchildren, Adam, Rachel, Britney and Sara Worley; his father, Jim (Adrienne) Gill; his mother, Nancy Gill; a brother, David Gill; and a sister, Susan Gill. He also leaves behind his faithful companions, Cletus and Mousse.

Steve is preceded in death by his grandparents; and two nephews, Alex and Zachariah Gill; and niece, Stevi Ann Gill.

A memorial has been established.

ST. CHARLES – A teen driver stopped for speeding in St. Charles faces criminal charges after police found him not only with marijuana but also a loaded gun, according to a St. Charles Police Department news release.

An officer on patrol in an unmarked police car stopped a red Hyundai Sonata for speeding about 10 p.m. Sunday after the vehicle passed the squad in the downtown, the release states.

During the traffic stop, which occurred in the 1000 block of West Main Street, police could smell marijuana in the car and saw flakes of a green leafy substance on the 17-year-old driver’s sweatshirt, the release states.

According to the release, police searched the vehicle and found two plastic baggies of marijuana in the trunk, as well as a loaded .38 Special hidden in the dash.

Police said the gun’s serial number was defaced.

The driver, who is from Elgin, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, felony defacing the identification mark of a firearm and two counts of felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, the release states.

The release indicated the teen was taken to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center for a detention hearing.

“Investigators will work to determine how the juvenile came into possession of the firearm,” the release states.

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A scaled-down, “true family-oriented” RiverFest has received support from the St. Charles City Council, which on Monday committed funding to the event.

Financial problems prompted RiverFest organizers to rethink the annual event, which will be held from June 9 to 12 under the name Festival of the Fox. Activities will be limited to a carnival near North Second and Cedar streets and Pottawatomie Park, which will host dragon boat races, a water ski show, an auto show, live entertainment, inflatables and a family movie night, according to city documents.

First Ward Alderman Dan Stellato described the changes as a “new shot in the arm.” Because alcohol won’t be served, he said, it will be a “true family-oriented” festival.

Although the city budgeted $27,000 for the festival for fiscal 2016-17, only $15,578.38 will be paid because the difference will be used to cover the invoice for the 2015 event, aldermen decided.

Aldermen described it as a compromise, as multiple aldermen were against totally forgiving the debt.

In addition to approving the funding request, the council approved the parking restrictions needed for the festival.

The restrictions will affect multiple city parking lots, as well as roads near the carnival and Pottawatomie Park.

Start learning Republican National Convention rules

Rules and credentials could prove extremely important at the Republican National Convention if no candidate has acquired the necessary 1,237 delegates – and possibly even if one does.

Yet you shouldn’t believe the hype about Rule 40(b) – that the fight over this rule will wind up determining the nomination, or at least forcing a choice between only two candidates. In fact, it’s unlikely to make any difference.

The rule is designed to ensure a smoothly running convention by limiting the number of candidates who can be formally nominated. It was strengthened in 2012 to prevent Ron Paul from getting a formal nomination. As Josh Putnam explained, instead of needing a plurality of the delegates in five states, Republicans in 2012 required a majority of delegates in eight states, a much tougher hurdle. Either way, however, this rule would prevent John Kasich (who as of now has won only a single state) or any other candidate from being formally nominated before the first ballot.

In other words, the rule would appear to limit the convention to a contest between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, who both will have met that standard.

But that’s not how the rules work in practice.

First, delegates can vote for a candidate who does not qualify and has not been nominated. In fact, some delegates will be bound to vote for a candidate who does not qualify. The convention, if it follows precedents, will allow – but not officially tabulate – those votes. The number needed to win is still a majority of the total number of delegates – 1,237 votes is the threshold in 2016. So narrowing the official choices down to two candidates does not ensure that someone will win on the first ballot.

AMENDMENT

In other words, we could get a first ballot that looks like this: Trump 1,150, Cruz 1,000, John Kasich 180, Marco Rubio 100, along with a smattering of other candidates. The official tally would only include Trump and Cruz – and since neither would have hit 1,237, at least one more ballot would be required.

On subsequent ballots, new candidates can qualify for official nomination if they can provide evidence that they’ve cleared the eight-state standard. Unless the rule changes, it wouldn’t bar a third (or fourth, or fifth) candidate from being nominated – as long as he or she can demonstrate sufficient support.

So any candidate who actually has the votes will be able to win under the 2012 version of Rule 40(b).

It’s very likely that delegates for Trump and Cruz will make up the majority of the Rules Committee and, at least initially, of the convention. So they could strengthen Rule 40(b), and attempt to prevent any newly qualified candidate from being nominated on a later ballot.

I’m skeptical, however, that any such rule would hold in practice. If the convention truly deadlocks – if neither Trump nor Cruz can reach 1,237 – and the delegates decide to turn to a new candidate, then I’m confident that they would simply do so, rules or not. Ultimately, a majority of the delegates backed by the convention chairman can do whatever they want.

It’s possible to imagine some rule changes that could matter a lot – for example, if delegates bound to vote for a candidate on the first ballot were instead freed to vote any way they want. But the rule about which candidates are officially nominated just doesn’t seem likely to make any difference.

To the Editor: Every morning my neighbor gets into his van at precisely 5 a.m. Whether it is snowing, raining, dark or below zero.

You can set your clock by his consistent dedication to his job. Millions of people all across Illinois just like my neighbor get up day-in and day-out, go to their jobs and do the best they can to meet what is expected of them.

I was struck by Rep. Bob Pritchard’s March letter asking to be able to do his job.

Now, however, because of the arm-wrestling match between two spoiled egos in Springfield, Rep. Pritchard and all the other elected representatives are being held hostage like the rest of us.

Hundreds of layoffs are taking place at public institutions all across the state – people who want to work but are being kept from work because of the irresponsible behavior of the state’s two highest-ranking elected officials refusing to do their jobs.

County nonprofits struggle to keep their doors open, struggling daily to meet the needs of our most vulnerable citizens, putting more and more pressure on their staffs and on limited local resources.

I think of the elderly man with two canes, who I watched walk away hungry from the DeKalb Senior Center, with only a three-day-old loaf of bread because cuts and lack of state budget prohibits the center from being able to offer a hot meal five days a week.

Or child-care workers, already underpaid, now forced to work at times with no pay, while they continue to care deeply for the children.

The lack of constructive debate toward a budget (which use to be known as the hard work of governing) continues to be a source of pain all across the county and state, leading to many sleepless nights for citizens who are just trying to do their jobs, keep their families together, take care of their neighbors and make ends meet.

It seems the only bipartisan agreement between House Speaker Mike Madigan and Gov. Bruce Rauner is the unspoken agreement to drive our state into further ruin. They seem willing to stay locked in a power struggle until there is nothing left. It is like the African proverb: “When the elephants fight, the grass is trampled.”

Mr. Madigan, Mr. Rauner, please, do your jobs, so our state can work again.

Well-traveled Speier deals in resiliency

kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – About 28 hours of windshield time greeted Cougars left-hander Gabe Speier on his recent weekend commute from Arizona Diamondbacks spring training to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Such trips typically lend themselves to reflection or soul-searching, but Speier seemingly exhausted his offseason with that.

In December, the D’backs acquired the 20-year-old Californian from the Atlanta Braves organization as part of the trade that sent All-Star right-hander Shelby Miller to Arizona for a package including shortstop Dansby Swanson, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 draft.

One month earlier, Speier and former Cougars lefty Ian Krol joined the Braves from the Detroit Tigers system in exchange for outfielder Cameron Maybin.

Add that to the first trade of Speier’s career, the December 2014 Boston-Detroit swap featuring Yoenis Cespedes and Rick Porcello, and it’s no wonder Speier simply shrugged his shoulders about a solo cross-country trip.

“It’s always a bummer when you’re driving that long,” he said, “but I’m glad to be here.”

Those last five words – with “happy” often substituted for “glad” – represent a sports cliché for most. For Speier, they reverberate like gospel. Seldom has Speier groveled over the past 15 months. He chalks that up to confidence and those early-career memories of what since has eluded him, organizational consistency.

The Red Sox drafted Speier in the 19th round in 2013. He pitched well over 12 appearances and 33 innings with the club’s Rookie Gulf Coast League affiliate in 2013 and 2014, compiling a 1.64 ERA with 32 strikeouts. Then came the Cespedes trade.

Last season, Speier climbed to the Class-A Midwest League, which also houses the Cougars, going 4-2 with a 2.86 ERA in 33 relief appearances over 44 innings for West Michigan. He struck out 36 against 12 walks, but it turned out he needed his command again over the winter when both Detroit and Atlanta traded him within a short span.

“I just go where I go, do what I have to do,” outfielder Matt McPhearson said.

“I’m not really worried about who’s in front of me, who’s behind me, because I know my talent’s going to show. So I’m going to keep working hard and keep grinding.”

Lefty Jared Miller, one of five players who spent time with the Cougars in 2015, knows such an approach works for him.

“I’m just trying to take advantage of opportunities, you know,” he said. “I realize that this game doesn’t owe any of us anything. You’ve just got to go out there and work hard, you know, keep your head down and take advantage of your time on the bump. Whether you’re a bullpen guy or a starter, you never know how many innings you’re going to get. Take it pitch by pitch and see what happens.”

Speier joined his teammates in a brisk, on-field workout Tuesday afternoon, where the one thing that brought to get traded,” Speier said. “Mentally, to the group of D’backs minor leaguers players to Geneva united them once I mean, it’s just a new team. North prevails in ‘battle situation’

ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North boys volleyball team has been in tight matches before.

A team with eight seniors knows what it takes to win those contests and showed just that as St. Charles East visited Tuesday night.

North topped rival East, 25-23, 2523, in two hard-fought sets to pick up the win in its Upstate Eight Conference River Division opener.

An East serving error and sideout gave the North Stars (6-6, 1-0 UEC River) the victory in the first set, which featured 19 ties.

“It’s still early in the season, but tonight was that normal East-North rivalry match,” North coach Todd Weimer said. “Even if one team is having a great year and the other is having a down year, the matches between us two always seem to be tight.

I think we kept our composure very well down the stretch and made the plays we needed in the end.”

North carried the momentum from winning the first set into the second. Kills by seniors Drew Lanz and Jackson Kolodziej sparked a 6-1 start for the North Stars, prompting a timeout from East coach Kate McCullagh.

As frustrated as McCullagh was with the outcome being within two points in each set, she knows this is the kind of match that can help her team improve.

“This is the kind of game you want to play, you know,” McCullagh said.

“You don’t want these blowouts, in either direction. If you’re going to lose, you want it to be in a battle situation, and the same thing if you win.

It hurts to lose right now, but you feel good about playing pretty well against a very quality opponent.”

East (2-5, 1-1) didn’t go away after falling behind. In fact, after McCullagh’s timeout, the Saints scored seven of the next eight points, eventually grabbing a 12-11 lead midway through the second set.

But one thing that stood out most to Weimer was North’s balanced offensive attack. Though East senior outside hitter Michael Carbonell finished with a game-high 16 kills, Weimer’s group had a much more spread-out, effective game plan.

Lanz and Kolodziej both finished with four kills each, while Danny Hamilton, Kyle Donlevy and Tom Koppang each contributed three kills of their own. Junior libero Sean O’Leary also finished with a sea-

son-high 12 digs defensively.

“We focused on what happened on our side of the net,” Kolodziej said.

“In two sets that finish 25-23, the balls can bounce either way. I think we stayed composed and didn’t really force anything. We got a couple of bounces to go our way and that ended up being the difference tonight.”

“You really can’t fault anyone for us losing the game,” Carbonell said.

“I mean, it’s an East-North game and both teams played at a very high level. We’re pretty optimistic that playing against a good team like this will help us down the road.”

Though Lanz has seen his North Stars handle East for three consecutive years in the regular season, there was no doubt that he expected a run from the Saints after pulling ahead early in the second set.

The senior hitter helped North to crucial points late in each set to help seal the conference victory.

“I feel like East is always out to get us, so it didn’t surprise us that they did that,” Lanz said. “They’re a good team, but we expected it. I honestly don’t think there was ever a time where any of us thought we were going to lose tonight. We never panicked when it was back and forth.

Our confidence is always high and, yeah, I just feel like we never thought we weren’t going to win.”

What do you credit to the team’s solid start?

I thought pulling through to win that Lake Park tournament was a really good confidence booster for us. I think we’ve just been working really good as a team ... through the back line, through the midfield and up to the forwards. It’s just been really good, and we’ve been working as a team really

well.

I know Lake Park was a conference opponent back in the day, but how much do you guys enjoy playing different competition?

It’s pretty fun because you’re not really used to playing them all the time.

You usually just meet in the spring break tournament. So it’s just kind of going into it not knowing much about them, and it’s kind of fun.

Has the team style been about the same throughout your Batavia career?

I would say so. [Coach Mark Gianfrancesco] kind of stresses possession and looking to play up, just kind of looking levels up and being more on an attacking mode to get behind the back lines and stuff. So I think it’s worked for us, and I think it will continue to do that.”

Batavia senior forward Megan McEachern contributed a hat trick during the Bulldogs’ 5-0 victory against host Lake Park during a March 29 game at the Lake Park Invitational. Her play maintained a sound level for the rest of the three-game tournament, helping the Bulldogs to a championship.

McEachern, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, caught up with Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley about the week. An edited transcript follows:

BATAVIA – St. Charles North’s Jack Lambert continues to make up for lost time.

The left-hander, who pitched only four innings all last season for the North Stars baseball team because of injury, ran his record to 3-0 with a dominating six-inning performance Tuesday as St. Charles North beat Batavia, 5-0.

Lambert struck out 12, did not walk anyone and scattered four hits, stymieing Bulldogs hitters. Only one runner reached third base against Lambert, and that was caused by back-to-back infield errors.

“It was one of my best performances,” Lambert said. “I threw a lot of strikes.”

To be exact, 71 percent of Lambert’s pitches were strikes, according to the St. Charles North coaching staff.

Lambert’s ability to overcome consecutive errors in the sixth inning by the right side of his infield thwarted Batavia’s best scoring opportunity on the cold, windy and rainy day. With runners on first and third with one out in the inning, Lambert fanned Batavia’s Kyle Niemiec and Luke Golson to end the inning.

“You can ask a kid to overcome something like that,” North Stars coach Todd Genke said. “It is [an] entirely different thing to have a champion show he can do it. They had first and third with one out and he kept his opponent down, he kept them from scoring.”

Lambert said he didn’t feel any added pressure to make perfect pitches after the errors or that he had to overpower the Bulldogs (4-1, 0-1 Upstate Eight Conference River).

“I knew they would make the plays for me,” Lambert said of the defense behind him. “I just wanted to do what I could for the team. I just needed to trust that my pitches were working.”

Christian Sidoti pitched the seventh inning for the North Stars (42, 1-0), facing just four hitters and striking out the last two men he faced.

Both Lambert and Genke credited catcher Erik Rabin with doing a great job behind the plate and contributing to the victory.

Meanwhile, Batavia coach Matt Holm said the team’s defensive miscues were too much for his squad to overcome when playing a quality team such as St. Charles North.

“You can’t make six errors and win a baseball game,” Holm said.

North got all the offense it needed in the top of the second, when Kyle Novotney led off with a triple down the left field line and scored on a fielder’s choice by Zach Mettetal.

The throw home on Mettetal’s softly hit grounder was late and the North Stars were on the scoreboard.

The North Stars added two runs in the top of the fourth when Mettetal led off with a walk, stole second and scored on Sam Faith’s single. Faith advanced to third when Batavia’s first baseman couldn’t handle a pickoff throw from Batavia starter Glenn Albanese, and then Albanese threw a wild pitch. Blake Saltsman singled Faith home.

North added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh when Brendan Joyce walked and scored on an overthrow of John LeGare’s bunt single.

LeGare scored later in the inning when Batavia catcher Tyler Munoz threw wildly in an attempt to pick him off third base.

Collingbourne helps Kaneland stay perfect

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Kaneland junior girls soccer player Holly Collingbourne called it the most dramatic goal of her career.

While the goal was unorthodox, it was enough to give Kaneland a 1-0 win at DeKalb on a wet and cold Tuesday night, keeping the Knights undefeated on the season.

“We’ve been playing a lot of teams that we’ve been crushing, so it’s nice to have some good competition,” Collingbourne said.

The high-scoring Kaneland offense had few opportunities against DeKalb in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East clash, but with less than 18 minutes remaining, Collingbourne had an unassuming shot toward DeKalb goalkeeper Meghan Hanson.

It looked like Hanson stopped it initially, but the ball squirmed out and went between her legs – slowly crossing the goal line for the only score of the game.

“I definitely thought, ‘Oh shoot, the keeper is going to stop it,’ “ Collingbourne said. “I was praying it would go in and it just slowly rolled in. I know our coaches were telling us to shoot. If it’s on the ground, it will skip [because of the wet field], and always press the goal and take shots because you never know what’s going to happen.”

The Knights, who hadn’t played since their 4-0 win over Rosary on March 23, have been steamrolling teams this season, improving to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the NI Big 12 East while outscoring opponents, 23-0.

DeKalb coach PJ Hamilton said he was proud of his defense only allowing the one unusual goal.

“This only fuels our fire to get better every day,” Hamilton said.

“We’ve continued to defend well all year. We put ourselves in good shape with some really solid leaders back there.”

While neither team had many shots on goal, DeKalb (3-2-1, 0-1) had a solid look midway through the first

half. On a corner by senior Samantha Myers-Miller, DeKalb sophomore Maddie Hill’s shot hit the football crossbar.

The Barbs also had a pair of potential breakaways in the second half – one by senior Kayley Garland and another by junior Hanna Hickey with six minutes remaining – but the Kaneland defense ran them down and neutralized the threat.

“Speed, thank God for speed, right?”

Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said.

“Seriously, thank God for speed. Five clean sheets in a row, we’ll take that.”

All five shutouts for Kaneland have come with senior keeper Emily Chapman in the goal.

The Knights take their undefeated record to Sycamore at 4:30 p.m.

Thursday.

“We wanted this,” Parillo said of the close win.

“We’ve got six more games by next Saturday. We’re busy. We need these things. This is the way we want to play. These kind of games get you ready for playoffs.”

JOHNSBURG – After beginning its season with three convincing wins out of four tries, the Johnsburg girls soccer team hadn’t had much of a chance to discover any weaknesses in its game.

But on Tuesday night, Burlington Central provided that first opportunity, rolling to a 3-0 win against the Skyhawks in Big Northern Conference East play.

Three minutes in, Rockets forward Megan Majewski put one past Skyhawks goalkeeper McKenzie McKay after Majewski was left wide open in the middle of the box.

The Rockets (5-2, 5-0 BNC East) tacked on two more goals in the 48- and 49-minute marks of the second half, which proved to be the back-breakers for the Skyhawks.

“We need to communicate more and organize better, but we need [to] settle down and relax,” Skyhawks central back Madelyn Peterson said. “We were panicking too much.”

Simple acts prevent blood clots Dear Dr. K: A friend of mine recently developed a blood clot in his leg after a long flight. I travel a lot for work, so this has me worried. Is there any way to prevent this type of thing?

Dear Reader: A blood clot that forms deep inside a leg vein, known as deepvein thrombosis (DVT), can cause pain, swelling and redness in the affected limb.

But the real threat happens if the clot breaks off and travels to the lungs.

Known as a pulmonary embolism, this can lead to sudden death. (I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, www.askdoctork.com.)

Clots tend to form in blood when the blood is not moving much. They form in still ponds, but not in babbling brooks.

Ordinarily, as you walk around, your leg muscles squeeze your veins and keep blood in the leg veins flowing back to the heart. If you are inactive for many hours, blood flow in the veins of your legs may slow so much clots form.

If you have to sit for several hours at a time on a plane or train, the following tips may help prevent DVT: • Get up and walk around every hour.

I do this religiously every time I fly or travel by train. I always get an aisle seat so I don’t disturb my seatmates.

• While sitting, flex and extend your ankles and knees every once in a while.

• Avoid crossing your legs. That pinches off even more of the flow of blood in your leg veins.

• Change positions often while seated.

• Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Learn to recognize the signs of DVT. The affected area may be tender or

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff painful, swollen, red and warm to the touch. If these symptoms linger for more than a few hours, call your doctor for advice.

It’s very unusual for a person to develop DVT in both legs at the same time. So the signs of DVT are particularly important to bring to your doctor’s attention when they’re just in one leg.

Treating a DVT typically includes injections of an anti-clotting drug such as heparin, followed by additional anti-clotting drugs taken by mouth. People with less serious cases might need only anti-clotting pills. More serious cases might require powerful clot-dissolving medications given intravenously in a hospital.

If you ever have had a blood clot before, you may well be at increased risk for getting another one. So all of the advice I’ve given above goes double for you.

Very early in my medical training, I saw several patients die from blood clots in the legs that traveled to the lungs. One of them had been on a long airplane ride the day before. I don’t know if he had taken any precautions – he couldn’t tell me.

It made me decide if there were any simple things I could do to protect myself from a similar fate, I would do them. I have, and you should too.

Dr. Wallace: My best friend wore a T-shirt to school with sexual words printed on the front of it. She was sent to the office and was suspended from school for three days.

I admit it was a bit out of the ordinary, but I think a three-day suspension was overkill. My friend is our best player on the girls basketball team, and her suspension will cause her to miss our next game against our most hated opponent.

I think the principal should have called her mom and asked to have an “appropriate” T-shirt brought to school so my friend could change and not miss any classes and not miss the basketball game. Another player and I spoke to the principal and asked if he would allow her to play even though she was on suspension. His reply was a very stern “No.” I think my friend was double-punished. maximum height sometime in their 17th year, while boys generally finish growing a year later, so it’s possible you have a ways to go yet. However, there’s no way to generalize. A person’s height is determined by many factors: heredity, diet, gender, body type and even, to some degree, environment.

Not all teens grow at the same rate. Some grow in spurts while others grow steadily, a little at a time. Some people quit growing when they’re 16, and others keep

growing into their 20s.

Spinach is a super food and your boyfriend should eat a lot of it, but it won’t make him any taller.

Dr. Wallace: I disagree with your answer to Ginger, who was upset because her father was going to slaughter a rabbit that was bought to be butchered. I realize Ginger became attached to the bunny, but her father bought the young rabbit for food, not to be a pet.

You said her father should not kill the rabbit. Would you have told her the same thing if the creature had been a cow, a pig or a lamb?

personal feelings about this, right or wrong. If my father had brought home a small “anything” with the intention of raising it for slaughter, and if I had become attached to it, I would have pleaded for its life and would have found it impossible to eat it if my pleas had been ignored.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY I am a single father of teenage Jeanne boys. I always Phillips have played an active role in my children’s lives, physically, emotionally and financially. My older son lives with me; my younger sons live with their mother.

I am bisexual and always have been attracted to both men and women. It took me a long time to admit it to myself. I suffered from depression for many years as I struggled with my sexual identity. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with HIV. Since then, I have been on medication and live a very healthy lifestyle.

None of my children knows about my sexuality or my diagnosis. I have wanted to tell them for a while now, but I never can bring myself to do it. I’m afraid if I tell them, they’ll be ashamed of me and it will add unnecessary stress in their lives. On the other hand, I’m tired of keeping secrets. Furthermore, I worry about the possibility they could find out from someone else.

All four of us will be together for an event in a couple of months. I feel this could be a good opportunity to tell them. Or should I tell them on their own, individually? Am I selfish for wanting to tell my children? Or am I foolish for not telling them? – Keeping Secrets Dear Keeping Secrets: If your children ask you about your health or your sexual orientation, do not lie to them. However, I see no reason for you to make a blanket announcement about this now because I sincerely believe most young people do not care to know.

If you wind up partnering with another man, they will at some point begin to draw their own conclusions. If your health takes a turn for the worse, they will need to know your status. Until then, my advice is to keep mum.

Dear Abby: I want to get my belly button pierced this year for my 15th birthday, but my parents said no. It’s just getting my belly button pierced. They let me dye my hair and get my cartilage pierced – so why not my belly button?

What happens after that?

North produces a negative double, which shows four hearts (the unbid major) and some eight-plus points (or six or seven if he really likes his hand). He might hold five or even six hearts and only 6-9 points, too few to respond two hearts; but that is rare.

South has four potential losers: one spade (on the third round), two hearts and one club. But there are discards available on diamonds.

Yesterday, when declarer ran the heart 10, West won with his queen and persevered with spades. South won in the dummy and took three rounds of diamonds to shed dummy’s last spade. Then the contract made.

West missed a great opportunity to offer declarer a noose. He should have won the first heart trick with his ace! Then, when he led a second spade, South might have thought it couldn’t hurt to draw trumps with another finesse through East’s apparent queen. But West would have produced that queen out of his back pocket and cashed the spade 10 and club ace to defeat the contract.
