Roan was one of a group of area youngsters selected to be on Legoland Discovery Center Chicago’s Creative Crew after submitting what their ideal Lego workplace would look like. Roan was age 4 when he submitted his winning entry.

Two St. Charles brothers – Rowan Sather, 6, and Evan Sather, 8, both of St. Charles, also were picked to be on the Creative Crew for their winning submissions.

The youngsters will get to meet with Lego Master Model Builder David Howard. Additionally, they will get VIP access to Legoland Discovery Center Chicago events and a family pass to the center in Schaumburg.

“My son has been obsessed with Legos since I can remember,” said Roan’s mother, Kristen Peyton. “We just thought it would be fun for him and a good opportunity because he’s been into Legos for so long. We’ve been getting him Legos probably since he was 3.”

Roan’s submission features different Lego rainbow birds. A Lego tubenator is one of the objects featured in Rowan’s drawing.

“I came up with a giant tube called the tubenator,” Rowan said.

Evan’s drawing includes a floor made out of Legos. Evan said he enjoys playing with Legos.

“You can build whatever you want with them,” he said.

Their mother, Stephanie Sather, said she is proud of the hard work they put into their submissions.

“They worked on them every day for about a week,” she said.

ST. CHARLES – No one was injured in a fire Sunday afternoon that caused an estimated $10,000 in damage to a house at 522 Longmeadow Circle in St. Charles.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of fire. However, it is not considered to be suspicious, according to a news release from the St. Charles Fire Department.

At 3:19 p.m., the fire department responded to a house fire at 522 Longmeadow Circle. While en route, firefighters were told a police unit was on the scene and was reporting a fire in the back deck and rear of the house, according to

the release.

Firefighters arrived by 3:23 p.m. and found a fire on the deck and a rear corner of the house, which they were able to extinguish in about 10 minutes.

A neighbor saw the fire and called 911 and he advised the home’s residents, who were able to escape safely, according to the release.

The neighbor also attempted to control the fire with a garden hose until firefighters arrived, the release stated.

The St. Charles Fire Department was assisted by Batavia and Geneva fire departments. The Elburn Fire Department provided coverage while St. Charles units were working on the fire.

McGuire said his memories of McNally’s include celebrating his 21st birthday there in 2007, as well as watching countless sports

games with his friends.

St. Charles resident Tony Hopkins said he always will remember the feeling of instant acceptance and friendliness he felt during his 10 years of coming to McNally’s.

Campton Township home badly damaged in Saturday morning fire CAMPTON TOWNSHIP – A fire that damaged a home and two cars in Campton Township on Saturday morning remains under investigation, fire officials said.

There was one minor injury reported from the incident, which fire crews first received at 8:47 a.m. Saturday as a report of a fire in an attached garage.

The residence is in the 5N800 block of Timber Trail in Campton Township, according to a news release from the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District. Upon arrival of the first unit, firefighters found a fully involved fire in the garage and a heavily involved fire in the home, the release states.

There also were two cars on fire in the driveway, according to the release. The residents already were out of the home at the time of the first call.

Daniela Saracco said her husband heard “two cracks and a boom” before they saw flames coming from the home. The Saraccos live west of the home that caught on fire.

There already were sirens blaring by the time Daniela Saracco stepped outside. The entire house was engulfed in flames in about 15 minutes, she said.

“Honestly, I’ve never seen anything like it before. It was intense,” Daniela Saracco said in a phone interview.

Firefighters had to bring in tankers for rural water supply operations since there were no fire hydrants in the area.

The fire was extinguished in about 50 minutes, according to the release.

A total of 11 fire departments assisted with the fire and several of them remained on the scene to do an extensive overhaul of the damaged property.

The home was a total loss, Elburn Fire Lt. Greg Algrim said in a phone interview. The American Red Cross is assisting the residents from the home, the release states.

“It’s undetermined at this point,” Algrim said of the exact location where the fire started.

The fire departments that assisted the district with this incident were Batavia, Burlington, Fox River and Countryside, Geneva, Kaneville, Maple Park, Pingree Grove, St. Charles, South Elgin and Sugar Grove.

ST. CHARLES – More than one person on Saturday compared McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub to the bar in a popular TV show.

“It’s like the St. Charles ‘Cheers’ … you walk in, and they talk to you, ask you how you are doing,” St. Charles resident Ryan McGuire said.

“They really care.”

McGuire was one of many people who packed McNally’s, 109 W. Main St., St.Charles, on Saturday, which was the last day the bar was open under that name.

After more than 16 years in business, the Irish pub will be converted into Valley Lodge Tavern, an upscale business with two other locations in Wilmette and Glenview, said McNally’s and Valley Lodge Tavern owner Bill Stavrou in an earlier interview.

Hopkins on Saturday celebrated his 50th birthday at McNally’s with his family, including his sister and brother-in-law visiting from Ireland.

Geneva resident Vicki Mueller also intends to check out the bar after it is converted into Valley Lodge Tavern.

Like McGuire, Mueller met some of her current friends at the former McNally’s location. McGuire invited them on Facebook to have “one last hurrah” at the pub on Saturday.

“It’s just sad that there won’t be a McNally’s in St. Charles,” Mueller said.

“There’s just so many memories.”

North, Geneva finish in tourney’s top half

By AIMEE BARROWS editorial@shawmedia.com AURORA – With the season barely two weeks old, Saturday’s West Aurora tournament was a good test for both the Geneva and St. Charles North boys volleyball teams.

While neither team took home the trophy, both teams placed in the top half of the 12team event, with North finishing in fourth place and Geneva taking sixth.

Joliet West won the tournament, while host team West Aurora finished second.

The North Stars lost to West Aurora in three games in the first round of gold bracket

play, then fell to Oswego in two games (25-22, 25-19) in the third-place match. Coach Todd Weimer was disappointed in his team’s finish.

“I didn’t want to lose two matches in a row in gold games. I was kinda caught offguard,” he said. “We were winning the entire first set, but we let it slip. We played great early in the day, but our enthusiasm was lacking in the later matches. Everything broke down in that last match.”

Weimer had high expectations and hoped his team would come out on top, despite them being a young team.

“We fell short, but it’s early in the season, so that’s OK,”

he said. “We definitely have things to work on, like communication. We have to be more disciplined, be more vocal and have more leadership.”

His team played a total of four matches Saturday, and Weimer thought maybe fatigue played a role in his team’s struggle late in the day.

“I think we’re one of the top teams here, but we didn’t execute well,” he said.

Jack Kolodziej had four kills in the final match, while Brendan Donlevy had three. Danny Throop finished with nine assists, and Trevor Gonzaga had seven digs. Weimer praised Kolodziej’s effort in the final game.

“He did a nice job for us.

He’s a utility player and he doesn’t know where he’s going to play until we start the set.

And that’s a lot of put on his plate,” Weimer said.

Geneva coach Annie Seitelman said her team still has a “lot to learn” after falling to Carmel in two games (25-18, 25-19). The Vikings previously beat Bolingbrook to advance to the final match in the silver bracket.

“The good thing about tournaments is you can bounce back,” she said. “It’s important to take the learning opportunities – what we executed well, what we didn’t. But we were happy to beat Bolingbrook to-

day because we lost to them last week.”

Seitelman plans to focus on defense in practice after being disappointed with a “lack of consistency” in the final set.

“We need to be more scrappy defensively. It’s the beginning of the year, so that’s to be expected,” she said. “This is a long day and kids get tired. But we try to pull the positives to help us improve. Tournament play is nice because we get to see other teams that we don’t see in conference.”

Luke Will had eight kills in the final match against Carmel, while Sam Wulfkuhle had five.

Nick Buseski had 16 assists and David Franz had five digs.

“Fine” might get it done in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs, but a potential showdown with Cleveland and Bulls-slayer LeBron James in the second round?

Hopefully, Sunday wasn’t a preview.

Not only did the Cavs (50-27) play circus ball with the Bulls, as J.R. Smith hit a 3-pointer near half-court before the halftime horn, and then Kyrie Irving hit a 52-footer in the third, but finished the afternoon hitting 16 for 37 (43.2 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc.

Smith set an NBA record by firing off 17 of those threes (making eight), without shooting a two-point attempt.

Meanwhile, all James did was score 20 points, hand out 12 assists and grab 10 rebounds for the triple-double.

The Bulls were led by Mike Dunleavy, who scored 24 points on 8-for-12 shooting.

One stat that couldn’t be overlooked? Seven turnovers from Rose’s replacement, Aaron Brooks.

“You can take a lot out of it, good and bad,” Dunleavy said of the loss. “If we see them down the line, you know, the playoffs are a different ballgame. We know each other pretty well, and, hopefully, we’ll be ready to battle.”

Maybe not to the extent of being a finalist for NBA Rookie of the Year honors this season, but make no mistake, Blatt hasn’t been the least bit surprised with the Bulls first-year player.

“Not at all,” Blatt said Sunday, when asked about being taken back by Mirotic’s development. “As a matter of fact, I can specifically remember a lot of discussions with my own staff about him, and telling them all that he was going to be an outstanding NBA player. And everybody kind of looked at me sideways about that.”

There tend to be a lot of sideways looks in the Euroleague, and that’s where Blatt grew very interested in Mirotic’s talents. He’s also quick to point out that his Maccabi Tel Aviv team had the honor of beating Mirotic and his Real Madrid squad in the 2014 Euroleague Championship game.

He was preparing for the stretch-four back then, and still game-planning for him now.

“He has proven to be a very good NBA player in his first season, and good for him because he’s a good kid,

Mirotic also led the NBA in fourth-quarter scoring with 136 points.

Bad memories: Few were as excited as Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau with the news that Indiana forward Paul George was scheduled to return to the court Sunday, after severely breaking his leg back Aug. 1.

George was a team favorite on Team USA over the summer, and his good nature also was felt by the coaching staff. Thibodeau was an assistant on that eventual gold medal-winning team.

CLEVELAND – It’s supposed to be this week.

It sure sounded like this week.

It even felt like this week.

Then again, everything with Derrick Rose seems to come with a warning label: Proceed with extreme caution.

“Well, we’re hopeful,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said Sunday, when asked if he thought Rose was close to returning from Feb. 27 right knee surgery. “Everything has gone according to plan.

He’s got to keep taking the contact on [in practice], keep moving forward, and, hopefully, it will be soon.

“We’re watching, we’re talking, but he’s got to feel comfortable enough to be out there.”

Rose was at least comfortable enough to tell ESPN sideline reporter Lisa Salters his return would be “likely sometime this week,” as the point guard was shooting around before the game with the Cavaliers.

The clock is ticking.

“Ideally, the sooner the better, but he’s got to be com-

fortable enough to play,” Thibodeau warned. “We’re not going to play him the amount of minutes he was playing before he got injured. We’ve got to re-establish a baseline, something where he can get his feet wet and start moving forward, and the next part of his rehab is to actually play in the games.

“It’s a step-by-step process, he’s got to work his way through it, and then that will be the next step.”

After losing to Cleveland, 99-94, at the Quicken Loans Derrick Rose A r e n a , t h e Bulls (46-31) have only five regular-season games left. When Rose first underwent the surgery, the original timetable was four to six weeks, and Friday will be that six-week mark.

He seemingly is running out of steps, especially if he wanted to get back and get some sort of rhythm going before the high intensity of the playoffs begins.

Maybe that’s why Thibodeau seemed to keep the expectations a bit tempered.

“It’s not going to be anything other than get out there, give us the best you have,” Thibodeau said. “Run the team. We don’t expect him to be great. Just run the team, play to your strengths, cover up your weaknesses

Dear Abby: My boyfriend, “Luke,” and I go to the gym together four to five times a week. Yesterday, there was a man on a treadmill who was sweating profusely. I kid you not, it was coating the treadmill.

Luke tends to speak loudly, and he occasionally forgets to turn on his filter.

When he saw what was happening, he exclaimed loudly, “That’s disgusting.”

I nudged him and told him he was being rude, but unfortunately, we think the man heard him.

Luke is actually a kind and sensitive person, so he instantly felt awful. This man is a frequent gym-goer and is often there when we are.

Luke wants to apologize, but he’s worried that if the man didn’t hear him, he will have to explain what he said. What are your thoughts? – Filterless In

Sweating during aerobic exercise is normal and healthy, and not something that a person can control.

Dear Abby: My wife, “Connie,” and I have been together for 30 years and have a wonderful marriage.

She’s a schoolteacher, and I travel on business often.

I think the time away from each other is good; it gives us a chance to enjoy some “me” time.

Connie is a genuinely nice person and makes friends easily, which I admire. However, over the last five years she has become very close with a divorced woman who teaches at her school. They text each other seemingly nonstop, and when I travel, they always get together for a movie or dinner.

I like Connie’s friend, and I used to be included – or at least invited – to anything they did. Now, if I suggest we all go out, Connie says her friend has other plans or she’s sick.

I’m not really concerned that there’s any kind of physical relationship between them, but I feel their friendship has become like an “emotional affair.”

When I brought this up with my wife, she said, “You don’t want me to have any friends?”

What bothers me is that I used to be Connie’s best friend, but I feel I have been replaced. She tries to reassure me I’m still No. 1, then goes off into her bathroom to text with her friend.

I think it’s obvious she gets something from this relationship she doesn’t get from me. These days, South’s one-spade rebid shows a four-card suit and is forcing for one round. (Instead, a jump to two spades would be the artificial fourth-suit game-forcing.

It may look tempting to ruff dummy’s three low clubs in the South hand. But if declarer does that, he goes down with best defense. (The curious may try it.)

It is better to take the first trick with dummy’s king, cash the spade ace, and play a diamond. If South is allowed to win that trick, he leads another diamond and discards a club from dummy. Even if West has the diamond ace and draws trumps, declarer will have 10 tricks: two spades, three hearts, four diamonds and one club.
