Big coyotes? They’re just fluffy GOOD NATURED Pam Otto “Ewe’s not fat, ewe’s just fluffy!”

This statement, a supportive slogan for snackers everywhere, made me laugh out loud the first time I saw it on a neighbor’s refrigerator magnet.

I could practically hear the sheep pictured there cheering me on as I reached for another helping of my friend’s chips and dip.

Those words have since become a source of reassurance whenever I’ve faced an abundance of flab. I mean fluff.

Pants too tight? Naw, you’s not fat. Shirt can’t cover the “muffin top?” No worries, you’s just fluffy.

To my delight (and perhaps others’ chagrin) I have yet to encounter a situation where I can’t apply the claim. Friends, relatives, coworkers ... none are safe from this endlessly amusing pun.

And now, I’ve found, it’s even more true for coyotes.

This past winter being what it was – cold, snowy and all-around unforgiving – coyotes were out and about, likely more than usual. Over the course of three or four months, residents throughout the area called or emailed to relate their sightings. And, more often than not, also express their concern over the animals’ seemingly large size.

“This guy was really big,” was a frequent comment. “It looked like a wolf,” was another.

The phone calls spiked in late January, prompting me to write a column about the likelihood of wolves in Illinois. The gist of the piece was, while not impossible, the likelihood of spotting a wolf in our area is very low.

Then, right about that same time, the PBS show Nature aired an episode titled “Meet the Coywolf.” (If you have an opportunity, check it out at www.pbs.org. It also may air again on one of WTTW’s digital channels. I don’t have cable, but ran into the show again the other night while

The program, which described coyotes whose genetic makeup includes a dash of wolf, is compelling enough that I may devote a future column to the information it conveyed. But for the time being, let’s just focus on the impression it left with local viewers.

Between Jan. 22, its original air date, and mid-March, I must have heard from 50 people saying they saw a coywolf in their yard/neighborhood/local park. Coywolves in St. Charles. Coywolves in Batavia. Coywolves in Elgin.

With each subsequent message, I wondered all the more, “Why the heck have I never heard of these guys?”

Curious to learn more about this new critter that, as the documentary reported, “is moving through the landscape of North America at a startling pace,” I contacted Heidi Garbe, a local research biologist intimately familiar with the Chicago region’s urban – and suburban – coyotes.

Garbe was one of the researchers shown in the Chicago segment of “Meet the Coywolf,” and also was one of the experts who participated in a panel discussion on coyotes that we hosted at Hickory

Knolls last fall. As someone who has tracked our local radio-collared coyotes, examined their pups and analyzed their blood samples, she knows these animals – literally – inside and out.

As Garbe explained to me via email, many ecologists seem to argue the term coywolf. “The coyotes up in eastern Canada are eastern coyotes, which have a tiny bit of wolf gene but size-wise, you could not differentiate them from our guys [by weight],” she wrote.

“Even if ‘coywolves’ did show up here, the difference would not be significant to the public because they are not that different from western coyotes. Some of the animals highlighted in the show may not have been typical of the population as a whole (i.e. the larger skull size) and instead were random examples.”

Garbe did note that the ongoing Chicago-area study (described in detail at www. urbancoyoteresearch.com) has not looked extensively at the presence of wolf genes in genetic samples. “But if abnormal [wolf] genes were present we would notice,” she said. “Here we have western coyotes and to date, have had no genes to show that there is a wolf influence in any of

our processed genetic samples taken from any of our study animals.”

So what’s the deal with all the wolfy-like animals people reported this winter?

“Often times a very healthy coyote will have a huge, bushy coat that could make it resemble something more like a wolf,” Heidi said. “I have seen a few huge coyotes from which we were able to get biometric data. It always amazed me that they weighed less than they looked. From a distance especially, looks can be deceiving.”

With spring in the air, sort of, our local coyotes will be shedding their thick winter pelage.

I suspect that reports of wolf or coywolf-like animals will be dropping, too. But over these next few weeks, try to remember Garbe’s wise words should you happen to catch a glimpse of any large, wild canines.

I hope she’ll forgive me if I paraphrase: They’re not fat.

They’re just fluffy.

Skilling to host weather seminar at Fermilab

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Tornadoes that hit Illinois in November, leading to the death of seven people and destroying thousands of homes and buildings, demonstrated just how dangerous severe weather can be.

And severe weather can strike anywhere, including in Kane County, said WGN-TV chief meteorologist Tom Skilling, who will host the 34th annual tornado and severe weather seminar Saturday at Fermilab in Ramsey Auditorium.

Two sessions will be presented, at noon and at 6 p.m.

“The fact is, these tornadoes have occurred in places that seem to be geographically unfavored for tornadoes,” said Skilling, who grew up in Aurora. “They’ve seen tornadoes on mountain tops; they’ve seen them down in valleys. We’ve had tornadoes in the city, even though many people feel that Lake Michigan is an absolute deterrent.”

The event attracts thousands every year.

Skilling started the seminar in 1981 with Brian Smith, a Geneva native who is now the warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Omaha, Neb. Smith is among the speakers who will be at the seminar.

Skilling said he hopes those who attend the seminar realize the importance of

8LOCAL BRIEFS Heroes Mud Run kicks off May 24 AURORA – The second annual Heroes Mud Run will be May 24 at Marmion Academy and Abbey Farms, at 1000 Butterfield Road, Aurora.

The first wave of runners will begin at 9 a.m. Chicago Blackhawks national anthem singer Jim Cornelison will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at 8:30 a.m.

The Heroes Mud Run is a 5-kilometer event for ages 14 and older and will be run over cross country terrain. Along the way, there will be more than 17 military-like obstacles to overcome and maneuver, and lots and lots of mud. This event is not timed, so you can run, walk or crawl as an individual, a team, whichever you prefer.

“They’re the folks who put out all the country’s tornado watches and warnings,” Skilling said. “And boy, they nailed this tornado outbreak we had on Nov. 17, days ahead of time. They were right on target with that, and had that area in a high-risk area that day.”

He believed those warnings helped save lives that day.

“When you look at the carnage that the storms unleashed, it’s amazing that more people weren’t seriously injured,” Skilling said.

“You’ve got to believe that timely warnings helped a great deal.”

Skilling said he believes

man-made climate change is behind the extreme weather events that have been occurring around the world.

“There’s little doubt that we’re changing the chemistry of the atmosphere,” Skilling said. “There have never been higher carbon dioxide levels than we’ve got going right now. While we were cold this winter, much of the rest of the world was abnormally warm. There were all kinds of unique weather anomalies everywhere. This is completely consistent with the notion that our changing climate is going to produce more extreme weather.”

Other speakers include weather service director Louis Uccellini, who will discuss the improvements in technology that have allowed forecasters to better predict extreme severe weather events.

“The National Weather Service is undergoing an historic upgrade in their computing capability,” Uccellini said. “Next summer, the National Weather Service will have more computing capability for the first time in decades than the Europeans have.”

editorial@kcchronicle.com A former Batavia man has pleaded guilty to his role in the heroin overdose death of a friend that occurred last year in South Elgin.

Nicholas C. Allen, 22, on Friday agreed to a sentence of eight years in prison in exchange for a guilty plea to drug-induced homicide, a felony. The offense of drug-induced homicide is committed when someone unlawfully delivers a controlled substance to another person and that person’s death is caused by ingesting the drugs.

Kane County Circuit Judge Susan Clancy Boles accepted the plea.

According to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, at about 9:40 p.m. April 4, 2013, the victim, 24-year-old Abbey Nordmeyer of South Elgin, contacted co-defendant Andrea R. Nielsen, 24, of South Elgin, and asked her to get heroin.

Nielsen and Allen then drove to Chicago, purchased the heroin and arrived at Nordmeyer’s South Elgin home, according to prosecutors. The three ingested the heroin and went to sleep, prosecutors said.

When Allen and Nielsen awoke at about 11 a.m. the next day, Nordmeyer was dead.

An autopsy determined that Nordmeyer died of a heroin overdose.

Allen must serve at least 75 percent of the sentence.

He received credit for at least 304 days served since his arrest.

Nielsen is charged with drug-induced homicide, and her case is pending. Her Nicholas C. next court apAllen pearance is set for May 14.

“Sadly, heroin continues to make news,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said in a news release.

“The stories are angering and frustrating, and a constant reminder that heroin is an epidemic in the Chicago area.

Although much hard work lies ahead as we deal with the challenges of heroin, our office remains committed to its role in ridding heroin from the region.

This guilty plea is a step in that direction.”

He was born in Milwaukee on Feb. 3, 1944, to Frank and Wanda Kozlowski. Koz was a USAF Vietnam veteran and member of the American Legion Post 300 in West Chicago. He was united in marriage on Jan. 13, 1968, to Patti Wilson. Koz recently worked part time at River West Family Fitness in Batavia. Some of his enjoyments included fishing, poker, golfing and shooting pool.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years; sons, Thomas (Lisa) of Aurora and John (Tina) of Aurora; grandchildren, Madison, Joe, Xander and Justin Moskal; brother, Robert; sister, Rita; and nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

ST. CHARLES – Julie A. Brady, 51, of St. Charles, formerly of Bloomington, passed away at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2014, at her home after a three-year battle with cancer.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be at noon Monday, April 7, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 6N491 Crane Road in St. Charles, with Father Matthew Camaioni officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Pat; four children, Maeve, Kelly, Patrick and Grace, all of St. Charles; three brothers, Dr. Jeffrey Blink of Green Bay, Wis., Brian Blink of Antigo, Wis., and David Blink of Appleton, Wis. She was preceded in death by her mother in 2013; and a brother, Joel Blink in 1982.

She grew up in Antigo, Wis., graduating from Antigo High School in 1980. She graduated with high honors with a degree in biology from St. Norbert College in 1984. In 1991, she graduated magna cum laude from the University of Wisconsin Law School. After graduation from law school, she served as a trial attorney in the

honors program of the tax division of the United States Department of Justice, wherein she investigated and prosecuted complex tax and white-collar federal criminal offenses in a variety of jurisdictions throughout the United States. She also worked as an attorney in the Class Action Unit of the Legal Department at State Farm Insurance Companies in Bloomington. Most recently, she worked as a special assistant in the Executive Office of the Cook County Sheriff.

Julie’s most valued roles were that of dedicated wife and mother to her children.

Petting zoo owner does not post $30K by deadline

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Petting zoo owner Stacy Fiebelkorn of Elgin missed a 4:30 p.m. deadline without putting up $30,000 as required for the care of her impounded animals, so the animals are now forfeited.

A circuit clerk official confirmed that Fiebelkorn did not post any cash by the deadline. Her Stacy attorney, Ja- Fiebelkorn mie Wombacher, could not be reached for comment.

Kane County Associate Judge Elizabeth Flood had set the amount to pay for the continued care and feeding of more than 90 ill and malnourished animals that were impounded by Kane County Animal Control last month.

According to state law, an owner can be required to put up cash security to pay for animals that are under the care of animal control.

If cash is not posted within the required five days, the remaining animals would be forfeited “without further proceedings,” Flood said in her ruling.

Fiebelkorn gave up the poultry, rabbits and most of the goats from her Mini Zoo Crew traveling petting zoo.

But she fought the forfeiture of the remaining 30 animals,

mostly horses and donkeys.

Flood already had ruled that she had to give up her llamas and alpacas because of their starved condition.

The two goats Fiebelkorn did not want to give up are not included in the security bond because the law does not consider them as companion animals, Flood also ruled last week.

Kane County Animal Control is expected to file another petition by Monday, for additional cash security to pay for the animals’ continuing care.

Fiebelkorn was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty and neglect in connection with the condition of the animals in her care.

Those charges are pending and scheduled for a hearing April 17.

Also scheduled for hearing that day is a motion by Wombacher seeking to limit officials’ comments about the animals outside of court. The court papers assert that extensive coverage with comments would affect Fiebelkorn’s right to a fair trial.

Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez – who leads a department with more than 200 personnel needing firearms training – said it didn’t matter to him if a new shooting range would be completed during his term.

He just wanted to know that ground would be broken on the nearly $2 million project and that it would be a reality, he said.

In the weeks leading up to last month’s Kane County Board meeting, Perez and his staff stated their case for the firearms range, which came in more than $800,000 over initial estimates.

The County Board had the foresight to plan an on-site firearms range when the sheriff’s Fabyan Parkway facility was built in the 1970s, he said.

He said the need for such a facility never changed just because the sheriff’s office moved to Route 38.

The County Board ultimately approved the extra funding needed to build the shooting range, which – depending on weather – should be completed by the end of October.

“You have no idea what a big relief this has been to me,” said Perez, who is not running for re-election in November.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office has been without a shooting range for more than a year. Its Fabyan Parkway facility flooded and was contaminated by lead and mold, Perez said, noting it also had ventilation problems.

Since then, Perez said, his 244 personnel – deputies, court security officers and corrections officers – have trained at the St. Charles Police Department’s outdoor range off Route 38. His office also has gotten help from North Aurora and Carpentersville, he said.

This has resulted in overtime costs and lost productivity because personnel must not only travel off-site but also must work around the other agencies’ schedules and, in the case of the outdoor range, inclement weather and daylight hours, Perez said.

An estimate of what it could cost is $60,000 to $80,000, Gengler said, noting that is based on about 2,300 hours the sheriff’s office had reserved on the St. Charles range.

“This would be for a year and total estimate if we had to pay all of our staff to qualify when the range is available and not necessarily when the deputies are available,” he said.

Gengler said the estimate accounts for the state mandated qualification, not for additional training. That puts the sheriff’s office at a disadvantage, as one of the biggest dollar lawsuits filed against police departments is a failure to train, he said.

“By us not having a range,” Gengler said, “we would be mostly focusing on just the state mandated qualification and not be able to provide consistent and quality tactical training to our staff.”

The new range will allow officers to train for various situations and conditions, Perez said, adding that a squad car will be able to be brought inside. Classroom space is also planned, he said.

Other agencies are interested in using the new facility, including North East Multi-Regional Training. NEMRT Director Phil Brankin said his academy provides training to more than 300 police departments in metropolitan Chicago. Because its classes rotate throughout its service area, Brankin said he needs good classroom facilities in dozens of locations.

His organization would get a “great deal of use” out of the Kane County sheriff’s classroom, as well as its firearms range, Brankin said. He said the organization currently doesn’t offer firearms training in Kane County.

Brankin described the sheriff’s new facility as a good investment because it will help train law enforcement personnel outside of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

“That benefits the community as a whole,” he said.

CAMPTON HILLS – One person remained in critical condition Friday afternoon following a two-car crash on the eastern edge of Campton Hills, authorities said.

Campton Hills Police Chief Dan Hoffman said the crash happened at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday when a 2007 Chevrolet Aveo traveling on Dean Street disregarded the stop sign at the intersection with Route 64, which has the right of way.

The Chevrolet was hit by a full-size van traveling east on Route 64, Hoffman said. He said the car’s passenger side received the brunt of the impact.

The driver of the Chevrolet – identified as Sarah Lundgren, 29, of Streamwood – was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva for injuries that were not life-threatening, Hoffman said.

Her passenger – a 15-yearold girl who lives near the crash site – and the other driver – Jose Alvarado of Oswego – initially were taken to

Delnor Hospital in Geneva, Hoffman said, but they later were flown to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove in critical condition.

Alvarado was listed in fair condition Friday afternoon, a hospital spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said they could not comment on the teen’s condition because of her age. Hoffman said Friday afternoon that he had no updates about the teen’s condition.

The accident remains under investigation, Hoffman said.

He said alcohol does not appear to have been a factor and that all of the individuals were wearing a seat belt.

No tickets had been issued, he said.

The Campton Hills Police Department was assisted by the St. Charles Police Department, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team, Hoffman said.

Units from the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District also responded to the scene.

Two proposed funds are prudent Several new funds are expected to go before the Kane County Board for approval next week.

The board is scheduled Tuesday to vote on establishing a property tax freeze protection fund and an emergency reserve fund.

We think approval of these funds would be prudent.

Monies for the funds would come from last year’s $9.7 million county surplus.

The property tax freeze protection fund would help ensure the county can fund operations through 2018 without increasing the property tax levy, according to Finance Director Joe Onzick. Plans state that $1 million from the county surplus would be put into that fund.

The idea of setting funds

Variety of efforts make our community a better place

aside for the future seems wise when considering the county’s five-year financial plan for 2014 to 2018, which is a working document. The plan shows that a $176,000 deficit is anticipated in 2017, and a $993,000 deficit is expected in 2018, if nonpayroll expenses remain flat and the county doesn’t cut costs or enhance revenues.

Meanwhile, the county is considering whether to put $2 million into an emergency reserve fund. Monies from that fund would be used during severe economic events, such as the Great Recession, or to fund an emergency expenditure.

Preparing for the unknown is sensible. Using surplus funds to do it is a bonus. We urge Kane County Board members to approve these two new funds.

The Show You Care Kane referendum effort – which sought to raise funds to help people with developmental disabilities – may have failed during last month’s primary election. But other, unrelated endeavors to better the lives of individuals with disabilities continue.

Take for example the recent effort by Marklund, a nonprofit organization that serves those with serious developmental disabilities and special health care needs, to “Spread the Word to End the Word.”

People visiting Marklund were invited March 26 to sign their name to the cause

to fight casual use of “the R word” – a derogatory term that once was considered more acceptable as a way to describe those with disabilities.

Advocating to stop use of the word, which some individuals use intentionally in a mean-spirited way, is admirable. As is another effort to help disabled people that recently was recognized in Maple Park.

There, the Maple Park Police Department was honored for placing first in Illinois in a fundraising effort for the 2013 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

According to www.specia-

lolympics.org, the mission of Special Olympics is to provide athletic training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Although the Maple Park Police Department has a small staff of seven – only one of which works full time – it still was able to beat out bigger departments in the state when it came to fundraising for the Torch Run. Kudos to Maple Park police and to Marklund for taking the time to help those with disabilities. Such efforts truly make our community a better place to live.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Don’t force out experience To the Editor: The Republican candidate seeking the office of U.S. senator is the “Milk Man.” The Milk Man is proposing term limits for public officials.

On the face of it, term limits seem attractive because power abuses usually come from veteran public officials. On the other hand, at the end of four years, or whatever the term limit is, experienced public officials

will be retired.

I would not want an inexperienced U.S. senator, for example, to be the chairman of the Budget Committee or chairman of the Armed Services Committee.

I doubt that the Milk Man has term limits for his top employees.

The Milk Man relies on his most experienced people to help him run the company.

If you want to raise chickens, go move to a farm. Having chickens in your backyard, where your neighbors can see them, hear them and be exposed to any disease they are carrying, is really not fair.

Wise up, people The biggest lie of all Illinois politicians of the past, of the present, of the future, is that it is for education. Wise up, people. It’s for spending.

Unseen consequences With the final day of enrolling for the Affordable Care Act completed, the true numbers are not those who signed up for the program, but those who actually have paid the first premium.

According to the law, approved by U.S. Sen. Durbin and U.S. Rep. Foster, after the first premium is paid, the newly insured have 90 days to make the second payment. In the 90 days, patients can visit doctors, clinics and hospitals.

Medical providers are not sure if the patient has health insurance. If the patient fails to pay the premium, then who is responsible for reimbursing the medical providers?

As part of Obamacare, the taxpayers subsidize the insurance companies for any loss they may incur. But what about the doctors and hospitals? This is like the

Titanic stating it’s only a small iceberg. The problem with the iceberg and Obamacare will be unseen consequences.

Take the car away How about Illinois doing the same practice that another state is. I heard from my friend that if somebody is in a car accident, they find out that if they don’t have a license or car insurance, the car is taken away until they get that. That would bring in a lot of revenue in Illinois, which it seems like we need. Why? I don’t know.

Enough with the schools already. There was an accident on Kirk Road where a guy hit somebody and claimed he was injured so bad he had to go to the hospital, but he didn’t have a driver’s license or car insurance. Impound the car and make them get a license and auto insurance. Take the car away. After so many days, sell their car and give it to people who are suffering, with jobs lost. They need it.

Find somebody else If Chris Christie was any type of candidate, he would have immediately asked Diane Sawyer if anyone has asked President Obama if he felt silly or incompetent all the times he said I don’t know or I didn’t know. Chris Christie is not a good presidential candidate.

We need to find somebody else.

Stirring up culinary creations at annual 60 Men Who Cook

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – John Hanson of St. Charles said he has been making a popular and tasty appetizer for his family for years – shrimp with a jalapeño pepper tucked inside, wrapped in bacon and cooked on the grill.

“Every year, I go visit friends of mine in Algonquin, and I bring this as an Easter appetizer,” Hanson said.

Then, Hanson brought the appetizers to Bruce Heidlauf’s Christmas party last year “and they were gone in no time.”

Heidlauf, who owns Mill Race Cyclery in Geneva, encouraged Hanson to bring his jalapeño shrimp poppers to the big Geneva fundraising event, 60 Men Who Cook.

And so he is.

“It’s fun and for a good cause,” said Hanson, who owns Prairie Piper plumbing company in St. Charles.

The sixth annual event opens at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

Tickets are $35 in advance at the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, 8 S. Third St., or at the Geneva History Museum, 113 S. Third St., or $40 at the door for participants to sample appetizers, entrées, side dishes and desserts. The event raises money to benefit the Geneva History Museum, Lions and Rotary clubs of Geneva and the Geneva Chamber of Commerce.

The local chefs volunteer to share their culinary talents. Attendees vote for their favorites in each category – People’s Choice Awards – as well as the winner of the best display or presentation.

The ticket price includes food, four chef votes and one best display vote, but additional votes can be purchased that evening as well as raffle tickets.

Heidlauf, who encouraged Hanson to participate, said this is his sixth year as one of the 60 Men Who Cook. His entry this year will be beef stroganoff on bicycle pasta – and yes, the special-order pasta is in the shape of little bicycles, he said.

“We dress up with bike aprons and jerseys,” Heidlauf said. “It’s a really fun event. It’s to support such great things in the community – everybody working together for the good.”

Also participating is Linda Krawczyk of Kaneville Township, who will be making salted caramel chocolate pecan bars.

“I’ve been making this for family parties,” Krawczyk said. “They’re pretty good.

I’m going to be making them bite-sized because they are pretty rich.”

This will be the mother of four’s first time at the event.

“I’m doing this because I volunteer at the Fox Valley Food for Health, an organization that makes organic meals for cancer patients,” Krawczyk said.

Four culinary students from Geneva High School – seniors Annie Rapach-Lagowski and Victoria Ascencio and juniors Amie Randall and Allie Starr – will be participating as The Crabby Cooks, making a classic French dessert called croquembouche – pronounced “croken-boosh.”

“It’s a bunch of cream puffs in caramel glaze, and we put them in a cone shape so they look like a tree,” Rapach-Lagowski said. “It’s complicated. And all of it is scratch-made.”

It is their first time participating, Rapach-Lagowski said.

“We thought it would be fun for our experience in the real world,” she said. “We are all considering being in culinary arts careers, so

Batavia has all this money to do streetscapes and arches and give $65,000 a year to develop Walgreens, and we have a TIF district, and North Water Street is in the TIF district. The Quarry Stone Pond Condominiums, I noticed in the paper, under foreclosure is $3,831,134.97 in condominiums ... . It’s a shame that we have administrators in the city of Batavia who are pushing for all of this development downtown, but we have all of these homes in foreclosure. North Water Street isn’t the only place that [has] foreclosure.

There are 15 or 20 properties in the judgment.

This is a well-known person in Batavia. And yet we have $65,000 to give to Batavia Enterprises and to Walgreens and $450,000 to give to Kluber and other things, and here this TIF money property is in foreclosure, meaning we, the citizens, are losing more tax dollars.

This has to stop. We have to have some common sense in Batavia.

‘HE DID THAT TO ME ONCE’ Tri-Cities b-ball alumni live Final Four vicariously

S

ix degrees of separation will shrink to one for many Tri-Cities boys basketball alumni during today’s Final Four in Arlington, Texas.

Recent memories of Connecticut guard Ryan Boatright and Wisconsin forward Frank Kaminsky, both juniors, certainly prevent premature senior moments.

“When I’m watching it with my friends, I’m like, ‘Yup, there’s Boatright,’ ” former St. Charles North guard David Johnson said.

“He did that to me once. Now he’s doing it to the best in the country.”

Boatright starred at East Aurora, a longtime Upstate Eight Conference rival of the St. Charles schools. Kaminsky, a Benet product, enjoyed one relatively shining moment against Geneva during a Plainfield North Holiday Tournament game in December 2010.

His 13 points don’t quite stack up to the 55 Boatright scored against North a few weeks earlier, although they ultimately left a mark. Either way, when Boatright and Kaminsky show up on screen, the players and coaches who once lined up on the other side grin, too.

“It’s tough,” Johnson said, “but it’s good memories, for sure.”

Geneva’s only sub-.500 season in the coach Phil Ralston era, 2010-11, included a holiday tournament loss to a Benet team with two Big Ten recruits: Kaminsky (Wisconsin) and point guard Dave Sobolewski (Northwestern).

Xavier-bound center Sean O’Mara, who helped end the Vikings’ season in the Class 4A East Aurora Sectional final last month, was a freshman.

Citing such recent players as Kendall Stephens (St. Charles North/Purdue), Nick Fruendt (Batavia/Northwestern) and Quinten Payne, a North product who’s transferring from Ball State, Ralston lauded the longtime nightly tests of the UEC River.

“I think year in and year out we’re going up against kids at the [NCAA Division I] level. It’s not like that’s an unusual thing,” Ralston said.

“Obviously, our goal going in as a coaching staff is how do we neutralize their talent and work with what we’ve got. From a coaching standpoint, I find that to be something that’s a lot of fun.”

Brendan Leahy was on the court for the Vikings against Benet three seasons ago, and still can’t seem to escape the 7-foot Kaminsky. A sophomore at St. Norbert College in

De Pere, Wis., Leahy watches NCAA tournament games in the company of many Badgers faithful.

He usually plays along, asserting Illinois is better than Wisconsin – recent results notwithstanding – but is mostly complimentary of Kaminsky and his teammates.

And in general.

Leahy also has pulled for one-time AAU teammates Kory Brown (Elgin/North Dakota State) and Brian Bennett (Plainfield East/Cal Poly) in past weeks.

“All the guys that I played with won at least one game in the tournament, so that was cool,” Leahy said.

Boatright’s double-nickel at the start of his senior year quietly elicits the same response among old North Stars, with time, naturally, providing a salve.

Allison Hausl, who made a few spot starts as a freshman a year ago, figures to play more prominently into North’s pitching plans this year.

Poulin sees a noticeable difference in the sophomore’s velocity and attributes it to the hard work put in for her travel team, the Wasco Diamonds.

“She got out of some jams.

I thought she was around the plate and changed speeds well,” Poulin said. “She started a couple of games last year as a freshman. She has improved so much – she was good last year – but she has improved because of the travel season. It’s a good feeling to know you have her behind Sabrina.”

Even if North has a tough day in the circle, it’s probable its loaded lineup will help the team keep up with opponents offensively.

Brodner, an Illinois re-

cruit, went 3 for 3 on the afternoon with a double and an RBI to help pace North’s 18-hit attack. Brodner, who slid into the designated player spot in the lineup to makeroom for Samantha Hausl, thinks North will be “pretty good” offensively.

“We’ve had a really good season so far; we’ve won all three games and we’ve been really powerful with our hitting,” Brodner said. “Our defense has done really well, too, but we’ve been coming out with the bats, too.”

Save for a late Montini rally, North nearly wrapped up the game with the first-inning outburst. After singling to lead off the inning, Rabin stole both second and third before scoring – along with Mickey Goetz – on Howlett’s opposite-field triple.

ROSEMONT – The qualities that make the St. Charles North softball team’s offense so dangerous were all on display Friday afternoon as the North Stars pummeled Montini, 13-4.

North (3-0) sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning at the Dome at Rosemont, scoring nine runs on nine hits to chase Montini (1-2) starter Lauren Trojnar.

North’s lineup has blazing speed at the top, highlighted by leadoff hitter and Northwestern recruit Sabrina Rabin.

The senior had a pair of slap base-hits and a stolen base in the first inning while scoring two runs.

The North Stars also feature a formidable middle of the order with immense power anchored by Mickey Goetz, Abby Howlett and Emily

Brodner, who each collected an extra-base hit and RBI during the first inning explosion.

“We expect to be successful because we hit the ball hard,” North coach Tom Poulin said.

Runners start the race Sept. 22 at the 2013 Fox Valley Marathon in St. Charles. Fox Valley co-organizers Craig Bixler and Dave Sheble formed the inaugural Last Change BQ.2 Marathon, which is set for Sept. 13. given its more residential route, has prompted officials to be almost secretive with the information.

“It’s tough for Boston to add bodies, and so you’ve got to increase demand to get there, and that puts a lot of pressure on your qualifying time,” Sheble said.

“If you think about this whole idea of running a fast time, you may have the idea of, ‘My time isn’t fast enough,so I better try to run a faster one.’ “ BQ.2, which starts in Geneva, is geared toward offering athletes the opportunity

to head to Boston as quickly as possible. Fox Valley remains a Boston qualifier, but runners meeting qualifying times now must wait 18 months to compete.

“BQ.2 will be a little easier in some ways, a little more difficult in others, but I think the spectating side of it and the national reputation it’ll have is really going to play out well,” Sheble said.

“We’re going to find out.

We’ve done our homework as best we can, but we think we have something here that’s really niche-y that’s going to help runners.”

The game was old hat for North seniors Chris Conrad and Josh Mikes, who had matched up against Boatright since their time as Haines Middle School fifth-graders.

“It’s never really talked about, but it’s one of those things that we know that it happened and it showed how great he was that night,”

said Sean Masoncup, a thenNorth assistant who now coaches the school’s varsity girls.

Home on break as a Monmouth College freshman, Johnson, now a tennis standout, could attest as he sat in the stands.

“I watched that,” Johnson said. “Oh man, that was amazing. I was just happy that I wasn’t playing that game.”

Revisionist history often prompts endless hypotheticals. Asked how he thought Ralston might defend Boatright, Leahy appealed to one of the more effective options in Geneva’s arsenal of zone defenses.

“I think coach Ralston

would definitely do his [1-3] chase on him, for sure,” Leahy said. “I don’t know, [Boatright’s] pretty talented.”

Kaminsky, who averaged just 4.2 points and 1.8 rebounds last season, is no slouch, either, continuing his tournament breakout with 28 points against Arizona in last week’s West Regional final.

Should Connecticut defeat Florida and Wisconsin defeat Kentucky, Boatright and Kaminsky would oppose one another for the national championship Monday.

Three seasons ago, their high school teams met in a sectional semifinal. No Tri-Cities athletes were harmed in the playing of that game.

Recent Boston Marathon scheduling changes prevented 2013 Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon participants from qualifying for this month’s Boston race.

Enter an enterprising idea from Fox Valley co-organizers Craig Bixler and Dave Sheble of St. Charles.

September’s Last Chance BQ.2 Marathon is intent on sending athletes to the northeast in 2015, one week before the fifth annual Fox Valley race offers one of the first qualifiers for Boston 2016.

“It forms a perfect bookend to Fox Valley,” Sheble said. “It kicks off the races week and it gives us a chance to service those runners who might not come here because of the window.”

The inaugural BQ.2 Marathon, set for Sept. 13, will be limited to a field of 330 runners and completed in eight laps along a flat circuit of the Fox River Trail that hosts the Fox Valley Marathon. The Fox Valley Marathon is Sept.

Registration for Boston 2015 is expected to open between those dates.

Burlington Central coach Wade Maisto feared more of the potentially bad stuff Friday as the Rockets faced West Chicago at Plunkett Park.

Kane County Cougars second baseman Daniel Lockhart went 4 for 9 during a brief stint at Triple-A Iowa last season. Naturally, the subject of the latest Weekend Chit-chat aspires to reach that level again – and beyond – but knows the parent Cubs are bringing him along more progressively. A 10th-round pick in 2011, Lockhart, the son of former Major Leaguer and current Cubs area scout Keith Lockhart, batted .290 in 67 games for Short-A Boise last season. Here’s an edited transcript of his conversation with Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley:

I know you’re not from these parts (Lockhart was born in Nashville, Tenn.), but have you gotten up here much before?

The last time I actually was up here, I was watching the Braves play the Cubs at Wrigley, and I was probably about 11 years old. That was probably the last time I’ve been up in Chicago. … That was the first time I’ve been to Wrigley Field, you know.

Went early, watched BP and stuff like that and got to walk around, see everything.

So that was kind of cool.

First time I’d seen the stadium and everything. And that was the last time I’ve been there, but it was pretty neat.

How would you describe your approach to baseball?

Just try to give it 100 percent all the time. I’m not the biggest guy or anything, but I’m going to play hard no

Last year, I think they were a little bit more of a home run-hitting team. This year, we might not necessarily be leading the league in home runs and stuff, but we have a lot more speed, a solid defense and things that are going to be able to win ballgames. Like defense and being able to steal bases; you get a single, steal a base and another single, and that’s a run. I think this is going to be a team that manufactures more runs and is going to be more dangerous on the base paths than years before.

Do you get all around the horn, or mostly middle infield?

Mostly middle infield. I mean, I’ll stick a good bit at second and move over to short, but I’ve played third a little bit. I can play wherever.

What have you heard about Kane County specifically?

I heard it’s a little cold the first month, but that’s [expected]. I mean, I’ve heard it’s got great fan attendance, which is awesome. Great facilities. Everything I’ve heard about it has been pretty good, you know. It’s great that now it came back to Chicago. There’s a lot of Chicago Cubs fans in the area, so it’s kind of nice that that’s our affiliate and we’re able to be here.

played against each other, so they still have stories that my dad and his dad will talk about and we talk about all the time. It’s a really great tool for us. They can kind of lead us through what they’ve been through and kind of help us out whereas a lot of other guys may not know about what’s the next step. We talk about it a good bit. I mean, they’ve kind of accomplished what we want to eventually accomplish. And we’re not necessarily trying to walk in their footsteps, but we’re trying to make a name for ourselves, also.

SPORTS SHORTS Weather forces Cougars into doubleheader today DAVENPORT, Iowa – That didn’t take long.

Inclement weather Friday postponed the Kane County Cougars’ game at Quad Cities, creating a doubleheader of two seven-inning games that begins at 3 p.m. today.

The Cougars (1-0) won their Midwest League season opener, 8-4, Thursday.

Left-hander Nathan Dorris, an All-Star last season, earned the victory with two innings of scoreless, two-strikeout relief.

Right-hander Tyler Skulina, a fourth-round pick of the parent Cubs in 2013, is expected to start the first game of today’s twin bill.

Skulina, who pitched collegiately at Kent State, went 0-2 with a 4.38 ERA at two levels last season, striking out 19 in 24⅔ innings.

The Cougars are set to conclude their four-game series in Quad Cities on Sunday before Monday’s open date.

The club’s 24th home opener in Geneva is set for 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday against Fort Wayne.

The team is entering the second season of a two-year player development contract with the Cubs, and is optimistic about extending that relationship.

“It’s been great. It’s been a great affiliation,” Cougars general manager Curtis Haug said. “They’re great people to work with. First-class.”

Field set for Kaneland Hoops event MAPLE PARK – St. Charles North, Larkin, North Chicago, Champaign Centennial and Hillcrest will join the host Kaneland boys basketball team at the second annual “Day and Knight of Hoops” shootout next season.

All but one of the teams returns from the inaugural field in February, as Champaign Centennial replaced Peoria Richwoods.

The event, the brainchild of Kaneland coach Brian Johnson, benefited the Wounded Warrior Project last season.

The organization helps wounded veterans and their families as they return home.

CHICAGO – Greg Fizdale is about to become a father.

Fizdale’s wife, Leslie, is eight months pregnant with the couple’s first child. If her pregnancy were any further along, it might have interfered with Fizdale’s annual guys trip from Indianapolis to see the Cubs’ home opener Friday at Wrigley Field.

“I was telling her it was good timing,” Fizdale, 35, said with a grin before his eighth consecutive home opener. “Because I probably would have missed the birth.”

Fizdale was kidding. At least, I think he was kidding.

The only certainty is that the party has returned to Wrigleyville after one of the most miserable winters in this city’s history.

And judging by the packed bars, crowded sidewalks and filled stadium before Friday’s game, Cubs fans will party regardless of whether their team finishes first, worst or somewhere in between.

Granted, those fans might leave a few innings earlier than they used to, as was the

VIEWS Tom Musick case during the Cubs’ quiet 7-2 loss against the Philadelphia Phillies.

But every game on the North Side draws a crowd, and Opening Day continues to be extra special.

Across the street from the stadium, hundreds of people filled Bernie’s Tap & Grill.

Eric Bonano arrived at 9 a.m. and found a spot in the outdoor beer garden, where he drank Budweisers in wind chills that crept to 28 degrees by game time.

“We don’t have a Mardi Gras here,” said Bonano, 37, who marked his 14th consecutive home opener. “And this is about the closest thing that there is to it.”

You want to know the depth of Bonano’s dedication to the Cubs?

“I actually dropped out of school in 2003 because I was following that 2003 season so much,” said Bonano, who was pursuing a political

science degree at Northern Illinois. “I fell some credits short because I just missed class after class after class.”

Bonano wasn’t kidding.

At least, I don’t think he was kidding.

Elsewhere in the noisy bar, passion teamed up with poignancy.

Juliann Atkinson of Winthrop Harbor wore a button with a picture of her late brother-in-law, Chuck Gesky.

Atkinson sat beside Sara Ames, Gesky’s daughter.

Gesky attended 30 consecutive Cubs home openers before his death in 2009. His family has preserved the tradition as a happy remembrance of their loved one.

“We come out for him,” said Atkinson, 59. “Every opener. And we won’t miss it.”

Other stadiums offer way better amenities than the 100-year-old Wrigley.

However, new Cubs players do not take Wrigleyville’s atmosphere for granted.

Relief pitcher Justin Grimm grew up in Bristol, Va., which has a population of about 17,000. He’s grate-

fully adjusting to the Cubs’ behemoth fan base.

“When you’re on your way to the park and you’re driving through Wrigley, you kind of get this feeling that comes over you, like, ‘It’s go time,’ ” said Grimm, 25. “You see all the people, you start to get excited. Honestly, I can’t really describe that feeling.”

It’s part expectant-father excitement and part in-memoriam bittersweet.

It’s part skipping-school devotion and part since-the’60s tradition.

“I love the team, I love the neighborhood,” Bonano said before heading to the park.

“It’s very welcoming and open to having a party.

“And if you’re going to have a party about anything, why not have a party with the team that you cry and bleed with, year after year?”

Breaking free Family revels in respite from routine What a great week. But for the kids’ physicals and Holly’s pet-sitting gigs, their spring break from school has been completely unstructured.

Sure, trips to novel places are fun and exciting – and we’ve enjoyed them – but every now and then some down time, when we do only what the spirit moves us to do, is just the thing. Nope, we won’t be needing a vacation from this vacation.

This week has reminded me of so many other grand stretches of time I’ve enjoyed with my children, particularly those when they were little, before school began (and their dad was at work). Who knows how many I’ll have left with them while they’re still kids?

Next year, when my oldest is a junior, he’ll be going on the school trip to France for spring break. And who knows, the year after that?

But that’s then. This is now.

Yes, this one, this break, has been lovely. We did manage a quick litter-pickup in our yard (amazing what was left behind after all of that snow melted), and raked the insulating hay out of the little, raised strawberry patch we built last fall (can’t wait to see if those transplanted strawberry plants produce anything after this crazy winter!), but we also enjoyed some lazy, stay-in-our-pajamas days. Those are the best, aren’t they?

Noah got his fill of soccer on TV; we got caught up on “Modern Family;” Holly watched a couple of old “Waltons” re-runs with me – and even asked, another time, if we could watch another episode (THAT was a pleasant surprise); and they both even agreed to let me teach them how to play the card version of mah jongg, my new, favorite pastime. (If you’re familiar with the game you’ll appreciate that their new favorite question is, “How many Craks do you have?” Yup, giggle-city.)

The best thing, for me, though, about these unstructured days has been the organic way our conversations have evolved. Without the pressure to get out the door to school or soccer practice or games, they’ve been lovely, relaxed and uninterrupted. But we didn’t just laze our time away. We did a shift at the animal

Between the bitter weather and some body-wonkiness (for which I finally had a procedure a couple of weeks ago), I haven’t darkened the door of the gym more than a few times. But Mr. Noah is seriously motivated and, well, it was time.

So, we went. The second time, though, Wednesday morning, I could barely get out of bed. (I am SO out of shape! Plus, I think allergy season is upon us, folks.)

But Holly and I had challenged Noah to join us at our deceptively easy yoga/ pilates class (taught by the lovely and talented Rachel at River West Family Fitness in Batavia) and he took the bait, so off we went. (By the way, not only did my new iron-pumper keep up – it’s been a few years since we took those mom and kids yoga classes – the kid even did a backbend along with Miss Holly. Whoa.)

Ha! On second thought, maybe I will need a vacation from this vacation. But I digress.

But it’s not over yet. When we brainstormed those things we’d hoped to do this week, also on the list was a hike, a bike ride and a movie. Bring on the popcorn.

Plants that enjoy April weather LEARNING TO GROW Sarah Marcheschi For three seasons of the year, the tasks of a gardener are pretty easily outlined. But spring, and early spring in particular, can be a bit perplexing.

Often cold and wet, and maybe even still snowy, April is a month typically reserved for such routine housekeeping duties as clearing out, raking up and trimming back.

We’ve spent months anticipating spring so eagerly from behind the glass and under blankets – dreaming of getting our hands in the dirt.

And when temperatures finally start to warm and days get sunnier, we are stuck sharpening our lawn mower blades and – well – cooling our heels. But the weeks between the official start of the season in March and the last frost (for us that is around mid-May), don’t have to be a waiting game. This is where cool season annuals come in. When it’s still too chilly for many of our tender favorites, this group of cold hardy flowers and vegetables step in to bridge the gap.

As soon as the ground begins to warm and soil is workable, cold tolerant plants like arugula, beets, lettuces and onions can be started.

You can even sow spinach seeds over frozen ground, and they will germinate as the soil thaws. (Yes, you read that right!) About four weeks before the last frost you can direct sow broccoli, radish and English peas. Kale and kohlrabi can be planted now as well. Once we get a little closer to our frost free date (about two weeks out), veggies like Swiss chard, turnips and carrots can go in.

If you would like to see some early spring color in the garden, but forgot to get your bulbs in the ground last fall, don’t despair! There are a number of pretty flowers that will do a wonderful job of brightening up your pots and flowerbeds through the weeks to come. Cold hardy annu-

Acclimate plants to cooler temperatures by keeping them outdoors during the day, and bringing them inside at night. After a few days of this, they should be ready to handle a light frost. Some cold, hardy annuals, such as calendula, pansies and violas, actually perform best in early spring before the weather heats up.

Once temperatures really start to climb, blooming will slow, and they can be replaced with something more appropriate for summer.

Now, while everything mentioned here is cold tolerant, a drastic drop in temperature, or a freeze, still has the potential to ruin all your hard work. Be mindful of the weather report, and if a cold snap is expected, simply draping plants with an old bed sheet, a blanket or some newspaper overnight should do the trick. Happy planting!

Background behaviors Look at you. I mean it. Go to your mirror and take a good long look. You are amazing. There is no one like you in the world. You are the product of centuries of DNA that came together to make you a very unique person. As a result of that, you inherited and developed personality traits, some visible, and others that operate in your subconscious. These subtle, more instinctual traits are the subject of this column.

Are you the sort of person who has all the great ideas, but never seems to get around to doing any of them? Or maybe your spouse always seems to need direction in order to get anything done? Perhaps you have a teenager who can’t seem to get her homework turned in on time. Personality traits are behind all of what we do, and having a better understanding of which traits are operating in the background can save you and your loved ones a lot of stress.

One personality index that I like to use in my work with clients is based upon the Kolbe Concept (by Kathy Kolbe). Kathy Kolbe is the founder of the Kolbe Corporation and author of the bestselling book “The Conative Connection: Uncovering the Link Between Who You are and How You

The Kolbe is used in various settings to assess the instinctive action and problem-solving styles of individuals.

I think it answers a lot of questions about how we function not only in our professional lives, but in our personal lives as well. Kolbe looks at how we approach tasks and offers us four strength categories. You most likely will identify with two or maybe three of these, but no one is strong in all four. Which are you?

• The Conceptualizer – or idea person – is usually responsible for initiating a project, whether it be a social gathering of friends, a vacation, a new product line, or as simple as the day’s schedule. These are typically creative people whose mind loves to imagine or solve problems.

• The Researcher enjoys gathering the information to support the idea.

These people enjoy the search, the details and investigating.

• The Organizer uses the infor-

mation from the research to find the focus of the project in support of the idea. They tidy everything up, define the beginning, middle, and end, draw conclusions, and generally make sense of the work. And finally …

• The Implementer. This person is responsible for taking the show on the road. Whether it is creating the brochure, writing the report, building the house, presenting the findings or tackling that honey-do list, this person gets the job done.

Assuming that we aren’t strong in each of these areas. Can you see what happens in our lives when we are expected to do it all? Which is the case in schools, in self-directed careers, and in our personal lives.

Why does the teenager have difficulty finishing her homework assignment? Take a look at which area she is weakest in. If she is an idea person, hits a roadblock when it comes to the research, but is strong in the remaining two areas, the whole process will stall out after the idea. Or maybe she has the first three traits, but is weakest when it comes to implementation. Her great idea will be researched and organized, but still will not get done. In the example of the husband that is waiting

to be told what to do and once told can complete the assignment with vigor – is he really lazy, or just idea deficient?

The examples are endless.

Once you have gained an understanding of these silent motivators, you will approach relationships from a healthier place. Knowing these indicators can help you to select members of a team so that all strengths are represented; or aid you in managing your busy household with more patience. Helping all of your loved ones to be more aware of themselves is always a good thing.

And there are so many personality traits to investigate. My column will touch on many of them, so make sure you catch it every month.

Once everyone is aware of what is operating in the background of their behaviors, they can be less avoidant, eliminate the excuses, have more patience with themselves and others, and ask for help when they hit that ever-present roadblock.

More Content Now As science fiction sequels go, this one’s up there with “Terminator 2” and “Aliens” – a good first film, and a much stronger follow-up.

But the title’s all wrong.

The original film, from 2011, was called “Captain America: The First Avenger.” Self explanatory; that’s who he is – Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), the scientifically enhanced World War II hero who was frozen in an accident, then awakened all these years later, who is confused about our modern times, but is better than ever as a running-jumping-fighting superhero, now waging war against terrorists instead of Nazis.

The new film, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” isn’t about Rogers fighting in snowy Afghanistan or taking a skiing vacation. The name after the colon refers to his newest enemy, the fierce, masked, long-haired bad guy called the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), someone who was in the first film going by, let’s just say, another name.

But it takes a while to meet him.

Before that, we’re privy to all sorts of problems going on at S.H.I.E.L.D., the secret organization that does secret projects involving secret superheroes.

There’s a pirate attack on one of their mid-ocean freighters (time to send in Captain America, Black Widow and a crew of practically silent, very deadly agents to clean things up), and then, back home, S.H.I.E.L.D. itself is “compromised” over the launch of a (to me, slightly muddled) new program called Project Insight, which involves satellites and big heli-carriers with huge, specialized guns that’s all supposed to help stop terrorism.

The good Captain and his boss, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), become enmeshed in this, right along with another government honcho, Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford, playing against type), and all sorts of things start going wrong for the people we’re supposed to be rooting for, eventually building to Bondian proportions of villainy.

Because this is based on a Marvel comic, there’s also the obligatory measure of angst in our hero, though

Evans is fitting comfortably into the extremely physical role, having also played it in “The Avengers” as a guy who can’t quite figure out what he’s so uncomfortable about, beyond the fact that he’s a 95-year-old man in a 30-something’s super body.

It’s kind of cool that the script has him missing elevator music but digging the Internet. My usual problem with Scarlett Johansson, returning as Black Widow, remains in place: I think she’s only a middling actress.

This time out, she’s just too smooth and slick and hip as the very athletic gun-toting agent. But part of that problem also goes to the weak dialogue that was written for her.

The film features some terrific action, beginning with fist and gun fights all over that freighter, and later going to a grander scale in a sequence that starts with a car chase attack on Nick Fury by some heavily armed fake cops and ending with the first appearance of the Winter Soldier (you can’t miss him; he’s got a shiny metal arm). Throughout the film there’s no holding back on spectacular stunts, fight choreography, firepower and explosions.

But there are many other sides to

it, including references to the earlier film’s evil organization (Hydra) and characters (Zola), an exhibit about Captain American and His Howling Commandos at the Smithsonian (where you’ll see Marvel main man Stan Lee as a security guard about 90 minutes in), an abundance of folks with secrets (most of them eventually revealed to each other and to viewers), the theory that public displays of affection make people uncomfortable and a shout-out to Marvin Gaye’s soundtrack for the movie “Trouble Man.” The film finishes its main story but has an unabashedly open ending for the next installment. Marvel/Captain America geeks should definitely stick around for the credits, as things start up again a minute or two into them, then do so again at the very end. Since I’m not one of those geeks, I’m not sure what was going on, but they were fun to watch.

• “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo. The cast includes Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Redford and Sebastian Stan. The film is rated PG-13.

Spending money on a gym membership may be an incentive to use it regularly and get your money’s worth. Classes offer companionship and a safe way to learn technique. Most good gyms offer a wide range of equipment and a changing roster of exercise classes that can keep you motivated to work out. A brisk walk in your street clothes to and from work to where you park or catch public transportation can do it.

• You don’t need to do all 30 minutes per day, five days per week, for 30 consecutive minutes.

Smokers need outside help to quit smoking Dr. Wallace: Both my parents and my older brother are addicted to tobacco. All three of them want to stop smoking for three reasons: First, to be healthier; second, to save money; and third, to keep me from hounding them to stop smoking.

All three of them have quit smoking several times, but something eventually triggers their smoking habit, and they light up again. A lot of people I know who now smoke have tried to quit before, but have gone back to lighting up. My dad said he is destined to smoke until the day he dies because he’s too addicted to stop.

I know this isn’t true, but I want to convince him that with willpower he can become an ex-smoker. Are there any statistics that show how many times a person tries to quit smoking and then finally succeeds? If so, there will still be hope that dear old Dad, sweet Mother and misguided Big Brother can be smoke-free. – Lynn, Portland, Maine.

Dear Lynn: It’s rare for a smoker to quit successfully – that is, permanently – on his or her first try. Many people have to keep trying and trying, often over the course of years.

No one should be disappointed when the first (or the fifth) attempt to quit ultimately doesn’t work out. Each attempt builds the momentum and desire to quit, and only when that desire is stronger than the desire to smoke will the person be successful.

The American Cancer Society says that its “Fresh Start” program has a 27 percent success rate for quitting smoking, while the Lung Association has a “Freedom from Smoking” program that claims

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace success 28 percent of the time. As these statistics show, nicotine is a powerfully addictive drug; it’s extremely difficult to stop craving it.

Don’t give up! Keep hounding all three of your family members until they are smokefree. It can and will happen. Both the Cancer Society and the Lung Association report that smokers need outside help and support. Fewer than 7 percent who try to stop using tobacco on their own are successful.

Dr. Wallace: My parents are both in their early 40s and are both overweight. They eat like there is no tomorrow! I keep telling them that being overweight is not healthy, but they keep saying that there is nothing to prove that being overweight causes health hazards.

I’m almost positive that it does, but I’m not sure what these health hazards are.

Can you help me identify them? I want my parents to be aware of exactly what being overly fat can do to a person.

Encourage Mom and Dad to eat nutritious and well-balanced diets and exercise regularly and they will lose all that excess weight. Here is a deal in which an opponent’s bidding helps declarer to find the winning line of play.

South is in three no-trump.

West leads the spade queen.

What should declarer do?

When West’s one-spade opening was passed around to South, he made a takeout double. West rebid in his second five-card suit.

Then North bravely advanced with three clubs. And South took a shot at three no-trump, knowing it was extremely unlikely that this contract would fail and five clubs would succeed.

Declarer starts with six top tricks: two spades, two hearts and two clubs. If he can play the clubs without loss, he will be home. But who has the club queen?

There are only 15 high-card points missing, which might lead South to think West holds that key card. However, West’s bidding suggests that East is the favorite because West has so many more spades and diamonds than East.

To try to cover all bases, declarer should lead the club jack from his hand. First, if West has queen-doubleton, he might cover. And in case West is void of clubs, South is unblocking the suit.

Here, when West discards, declarer wins with dummy’s king, runs the club nine, plays a club to his 10, and cashes the club ace.

Then South leads a heart to dummy’s ace and cashes the last club.

With two major-suit winners still nestling in his hand, the contract is home.
