Sammy’s Bikes owner opens 2nd shop in STC Giant Fox Valley offers all Giant-brand bicycles, products

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The owner of a popular bicycle shop in St. Charles has opened another business in the city.

Giant Fox Valley, at 415 S. First St., St. Charles, had a soft opening on Saturday and is near Sammy’s Bikes, at 602 First St. The Giant Fox Valley shop is solely dedicated to Giant-brand bikes and merchandise, including the Liv bicycle line designed specifically for women, said Sammy Radi, owner of the two bike shops. “[Giant Fox Valley] covers anything when it comes to a rider, from casual to comfort, from younger to older,” Radi said.

Giant Fox Valley is the only Giant-brand store in the Midwest, and the fifth Giant-based store nation-

wide, Radi said.

Radi looked to a customer and former colleague to manage his latest store. Ferdie Franada worked with Radi at his former shop, Spokes, in Wheaton, about

20 years ago.

“He’s very knowledgeable and passionate about biking,” Radi said of Franada.

Like Sammy’s Bikes, Giant Fox Valley will be associated with casual group bike rides and charity rides.

A grand opening for Giant Fox Valley is in the works for the end of May after Memorial Day weekend, Radi said.

Sammy’s Bikes and Giant Fox Valley have different inventories and brands, so there will be a large variety between the two shops, Radi said.

“Anything you are looking for, we’ll have it on this corner,” he said.

Giant Fox Valley is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

New Batavia business aims to keep seniors in their homes

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia resident Caroline Carlson Olinger said she wants to help seniors remain in their homes as long as possible.

Olinger, along with her husband and her sisterin-law, Judy Carlson, are local franchise owners of the nationwide Caroline franchise Carlson S e n i o r s Olinger Helping Seniors, which hires seniors to provide nonmedical services to other seniors. Their franchise serves all of Kane County and portions of McHenry and DuPage counties.

Nonmedical services include such things as light housekeeping, meal preparation and transportation

to doctor appointments, Olinger said.

Olinger, 54, said she was searching for a new outlet after retiring from a nearly 30year career in the U.S. Navy.

“I wanted to do something, and it had to do with people,” Olinger said. “I did not want something traditional, like going back to an office environment. I wanted something where I could be in charge, and try to do something to bring some value to the community.”

Her business only has been operating since March, when she received her home services agency license from the Illinois Department of Public Health. She already has gone about hiring employees for her business.

Olinger said having seniors working with other seniors is beneficial to the person being helped, as well as the employee “They have life experiences that they connect with

one another,” Olinger said.

“One of our catch phrases is, ‘it’s a way to give and receive.’ It’s very rewarding for the seniors to be able to work.”

Olinger said she plans to team up with Elderday Center, which is based in the Bethany Ministry building of the Bethany Lutheran Church at 328 W. Wilson St., Batavia, as part of Seniors Helping Seniors’ grand opening in September. Elderday Center provides a variety of programs, including occupational therapy, arts and crafts and nursing care.

“We don’t compete,” Olinger said. “If anything, we complement each other.

And we can refer people.

The idea is, what’s best for that senior, and how can our services bring joy and just comfort to that senior.”

Because the ability to drive preserves seniors’ independence, drivers over age 65 should do everything they can to preserve their driving skills, including having their vision checked. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that those aged 65 years and older have their eyes examined once every one to two years even if they experience no issues. An exam can determine if eyeglass prescriptions need to be updated and whether there are any signs of disease that could compromise vision and hamper driving ability. For instance, cataracts can make objects appear blurry and/or make vision more sensitive to the glare of oncoming headlights, and glaucoma decreases peripheral vision, making it harder to see objects away from the direct line of sight.

P.S. “Contrast sensitivity” is particularly important for discerning objects at dawn and at dusk and should be checked in a senior’s eye exam.

Hosanna! Lutheran plans bike collection

WHAT: For the sixth year in a row, Hosanna! Lutheran Church will be collecting bikes (new or used in any condition) for distribution to children and families in under-resourced neighborhoods. The “Bikes for Kids” effort has received, fixed up and given away more than 200 bicycles and tricycles in the past five years.

Tiffany Lewis Skin Care celebrates 10 years

Tiffany Lewis Skin Care opened on May 16, 2005, on the second floor of a vintage house at 311 S. Second St., St. Charles, business owner Tiffany Lewis said.

The spa offers eyebrow w a x i n g , tweezing and tinting and customizable facials.

T h i s month, Lewis introduced an anti-agTiffany Lewis ing microcurrent facial and a unique eyebrow design service called Brow

Rehab.

Lewis said some of her clients have been with her for the entire decade the business has been open. Tracy Haas, who is a licensed esthetician like Lewis, joined the business in 2013 when Lewis’ client base grew too big for one person.

“I am proud that my business has remained relevant and successful for a decade, and we are overjoyed to con-

tinue to provide our clients with esthetic services they benefit from,” Lewis wrote in an email.

In the email, Lewis attributed the growth of the business to her passion for skin care, the continuing education she receives for her work and the exceptional level of service she provides patients.

Lewis’ initial passion for beauty projects and a strug-

gle with acne inspired her to go into skin care as a career, according to her business website. She attended the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis with a focus on esthetics, which she has been practicing for more than 15 years.

GENEVA – St. Charles resident Joe Greenberg has been chosen to be the 2015 Swedish Days Parade marshal, the Viking Service Organization and Geneva Chamber of Commerce announced.

Though Greenberg does not reside in Geneva, he has been actively involved in promoting the development and growth of the business community.

A Dancing with Geneva Stars contestant in its inaugural year, Greenberg also was a cast member of State Street Dance Studio’s “Nutcracker” and worked with the chamber on programs such as 60 Men Who Cook and The Swedish Days Grand Parade.

Greenberg, 90, used to work at the former Merra-Lee shops in Geneva, and after they closed in 2011, he became the operations manager for The Little Traveler and property manager for Mike Simon, positions Greenberg still holds today.

The Swedish Days Festival runs from June 23 to 28, with the parade set for 1 p.m.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Between the 41st annual Batavia Loyalty Day Parade and the Batavia City-Wide Garage Sale that benefits the Batavia Fireworks Fund, there will be plenty to do in Batavia this weekend.

For those who like to shop for bargains, the 22nd annual Batavia City-Wide Garage Sale will be on Friday and Saturday. Participants pay a $35 registration fee to list their addresses in the garage sales.

The fees collected will go to the Batavia Fireworks Fund.

Garage sale maps are available starting today at several locations, including the Batavia Government Center, at 100 N. Island Ave., Bat-

avia Public Library, at 10 S. Batavia Ave., and the Batavia Park District office, at 327 W. Wilson St. The city’s Fourth of July fireworks are funded solely through private donations.

Loyalty Day was established

by Congress in the 1950s as a response to the communist May Day parades in the Soviet Union and China.

The Cold War ended, but the Batavia Loyalty Day has remained a strong tradition since 1975. “Batavia Leading Loyalty To Our Nation” is the

theme for Sunday’s parade, and Mike Carlson, accompanied by longtime volunteers and parade participants Mark and Wendy Meyer, will be grand marshals.

The parade starts at 1:30 p.m. at Raddant Road and Wilson Street and follows Wilson Street west to Route 25.

From there, the parade travels south to the Batavia VFW Post, at 645 S. River St. Route 25 traffic will be detoured to Route 31 from 1 to 4 p.m., and Wilson Street will be closed between Island Avenue and Woodland Hills Road during the entirety of the event, including the Wilson Street bridge.

Traffic will be detoured to the Fabyan Parkway and Route 56 bridges during the closure.

My name is Ally O’Donnell, and I am a senior at Batavia High School. I’m also an intern at the Kane County Chronicle, and this is my first column.

On April 14, my high school hosted one of its semiannual blood drives for Heartland Blood Centers, and I decided to donate blood for the first time.

As a child who was terrified of needles, this was a big step for me. I had always ruled out blood drives in the past because of this fact. I had recently overcome this fear and knew donating blood was a great way to give back. My experience at the blood drive was wonderful.

The whole procedure lasted about one hour. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable.

As a person who had never given blood before, I was a little nervous, but the staff reassured me.

The person who took care of me helped me through it all. She narrated the entire procedure and made sure I felt comfortable with what was happening. There was a slight pinch when the needle went in, but – besides that – there wasn’t much pain involved.

While my blood was being drawn, I began feeling light headed, and I told the staff member. Immediately, she gave me cold towelettes to place on my forehead and neck, turned a fan on and had me rock my feet back and forth.

With these steps, I began to feel much better. The nurse told me I could sit on the cot as long as I liked until I felt better. The staff members continued to ask me how I was feeling and whether they could do anything to help me, showing dedication and care. Once the blood donation was complete, I had to sit down for 15 minutes and eat many of the snacks provided. While I was waiting the 15 minutes, a friendly staff member was happy to answer the questions I had about the blood drive.

I ate three bags of chips, and they insisted I take three more since I liked them so much.

I left with a sticker and a free T-shirt, but the best takeaway of the experience was knowing I had saved lives that day. According to the Heart-

land Blood Centers website, 500 blood donations are needed daily, and one unit of blood can help save at least three lives.

Only about 5 percent of the eligible population donates blood even though about 1 in 7 people entering a hospital needs blood.

There are some qualifications to be a donor, including being 17 years old, at least 110 pounds and in good health.

Donating blood is 100 percent safe, and it will not decrease a donor’s strength, according to Heartland Blood Centers.

Lindsay Langstaff, a Batavia High School senior, has donated blood five times. When I spoke with her about her experience, she recommended to other donors to drink lots of water and eat a big meal before donating to make the process smoother. Langstaff also urged others to donate, even if they’re afraid of needles.

“You’re saving lives by doing this, but you’re also conquering a personal fear,” said Langstaff.

I also spoke with Marnie Heim, a resident of Batavia and a teacher at Batavia High School. As the advisor of Key Club – a student-led club that promotes community service – she helped organize the blood drive. Heim began helping with blood drives when she was in high school. She found she was unable to donate blood, so as president of Key Club at her high school, she organized a blood drive to help out instead.

“A lot of people don’t always have time or money to give, but blood, you do have,” said Heim.

As proposed, the changes would allow for a developer to have a pre-concept review in front of aldermen at a Committee of the Whole meeting.

The developer would have up to 10 minutes to give a presentation to aldermen. The public would have up to 30 minutes to comment on the plans, and then aldermen would discuss the project and provide general comments to the developer.

“It gives them a little bit of feedback but doesn’t give them a final decision,” Buening told aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

First Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien asked Buening if he thought the proposed review process would deter developers from coming to Batavia.

“I don’t think it will deter them, but it will at least give them guidance,” Buening said.

“We are trying to allow public comments at the very beginning of the process.”

Aldermen at the meeting recommended approval of the changes.

Judge James Hallock accepted Glen C. Baum’s plea on April 23.

The 43-year-old Oswego man was charged in February with nine counts of criminal sexual assault, each a Class 1 felony, and two counts of child pornography, each a Class 3 felony.

Baum is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old between May 2014 and January 2015.

He instructed high school students in fire sci-

ence at that time, and the teen reportedly was one of his students.

His bond was set at $250,000, and he unsuccessfully sought a bond reduction in February.

Records indicate he since has been released from jail, as his wife posted the required $25,000 bail on April 2.

The bulk of the amount – $19,660 – was charged to a credit card, while the balance was paid for with cash, according to records.

As conditions of bond, Baum cannot have Internet access, cannot reveal the teen’s name and cannot have contact with the teen or any minor, except for his stepson with supervision, records show.

He is next expected in court at 9 a.m. June 11.

Baum, who was described as a contracted service provider at the Fox Valley Career Center, was terminated Jan. 14, according to Kaneland School District 302.

BATAVIA – City staff this week proposed changes to the city’s development review process designed to give the public more of a chance to comment on development plans early in the process.

The changes are being proposed in light of Skokie-based The Missner Group’s plans to build two large industrial buildings on the east side of Kirk Road at Wind Energy Pass. That application is now considered closed because The Missner Group had missed a deadline to submit plans to the city for its proposed industrial park. The group Keep Batavia Neighborhoods had opposed the project.

To allow for more public comments early in the planning process, Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath and Community Development Director Scott Buening are proposing such changes as giving the public up to 30 minutes to comment on a development proposal.

Carl was born in Toronto, Canada on March 2, 1922, to the late Carl Francis and Frederica Jaynes. Carl served in the 1st Canadian Paratroop Batallion during World War II. He was in England on D day. Carl and one other from his company did not have to jump that fateful day.

Carl was married to Alberta (Park) for 65 years. They made their home in Dundee, IL on Sleepy Hollow Road. It was on this mini-farm that they raised their four children. Carl

was the founder of Elgin Precision Glass Company.

Carl is survived by his children, Ronald (Jody) of St. Charles, Robert of Hampshire, Dan (Margaret) of Ames, IA and Carol Sturdevant of Gulf Breeze, FL; his loving grandchildren, Cameron, Philip (Michelle), Gordon (fiancé, Corin Elg), Travis, Chelsea (David), Logan, Brian and Peter; his five great-grandchildren, Constance, Conley, Coralee, Joseph and Eli, whom always brought a sparkle to his eyes.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, sister, Leatrice; and half-brother, Gordon Smale.

Both Carl and Alberta took great pride in becoming U.S. citizens in 1998.

missed by her family and friends.

GENEVA – Kane County Board members on Wednesday continued to make decisions about the sheriff’s office’s budget without input from Sheriff Donald Kramer.

“It’s like ‘Groundhog Day’ at these meetings,” Finance Committee Chairman John Hoscheit said.

The first-term sheriff’s budget has been under scrutiny since January, when board members learned Kramer reduced the number of federal inmates at the jail. The program with the U.S. Marshal’s Service was expected to generate more than $2 million in revenue.

Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick has provided budget performance reports on the sheriff’s budget in recent weeks. As of the April 22 report, total revenues were $387,644 below budget, and total expenditures were $170,071 below budget, yielding a net unfavorable total variance of $217,573, he said.

Although Kramer has been absent from most public meetings that concern his budget, that hasn’t stopped County Board members from taking action to rectify the loss in revenue from the federal program. Since February, the County Board has cut nearly $1.8 million from his budget and, with the Finance Committee’s action Wednesday, is on track to make another $500,000 in adjustments.

The committee supported an ordinance presented

by Onzick that would reduce

the sheriff’s office budget by $500,000 in order to address the remainder of the forfeited revenue from the federal inmate program.

The County Board is expected to act on the ordinance May 12.

The proposal is based off communications Kramer had April 7 with the County Board chairman, the Judiciary and Public Safety Committee chairman and the Finance Committee chairman, Onzick said.

At that time, Kramer reported that, extrapolated, expenses will be in the black by $650,000 to $700,000, Onzick said, noting the sheriff’s office should then be able to absorb a $500,000 reduction.

Onzick provided suggestions for which line items to adjust but noted Kramer will have an opportunity to make changes.

Going forward, Theresa Barreiro, D-Aurora, said she hopes the sheriff will have more answers for board members, especially at the Judicial and Public Safety Committee meetings, which his office reports to.

He last attended a Judicial and Public Safety Committee meeting in February, when he defended his decision regarding the federal inmate program. At the April meeting, Chairman Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, voiced her colleagues’ frustration

Violence in Baltimore undermines earlier peaceful protests BLOOMBERG NEWS It is pointless to ask which is more outrageous: deadly police misconduct or the violence that erupts in response.

Both are – but those who rioted and looted Monday night in Baltimore have now ensured that the focus will be more on the latter than on the former.

That’s what happens when gangs of “thugs” (as Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake called them) and “criminals” (the term President Barack Obama used) roam the streets of a major American city, attacking police officers and destroying property. Just a few days ago, Baltimore

was facing the daunting yet crucial task of trying to clean up its police department. Now it has to do that and begin restoring a reputation tainted by images of violence and destruction seen around the world.

It’s worth noting that even the pastor who eulogized Freddie Gray, the young man whose death in police custody set off the peaceful protests that were overrun by violence, said the rioting was an embarrassment. So did the Baltimore residents who showed up Tuesday morning to clean up the destruction from the night before.

The violence amounts to an enormous self-inflicted

wound – to a city that has been working for years to recover from decades of capital and population flight.

From 1950 to 1970, more than 900,000 people lived in Baltimore. Over the next 40 years, as industrial jobs disappeared and crime soared, the population steadily shrank, by almost a third. Other than Detroit, few cities of Baltimore’s size have experienced such a hollowing out.

Only recently – after long, hard work led largely by black community and political leaders – has this trend been halted. In 2012 and 2013, the city added 2,500 residents, a small but symbolically important gain, before

falling by 600 people last year.

Rawlings-Blake set a goal in 2011 of attracting 10,000 more families to Baltimore.

It would have been hard for Baltimore’s residents to deal her a bigger setback than a few of them did Monday night.

Those who started and led the riots have no recollection of Baltimore’s boom days.

Few do. But many residents have dedicated their lives to making the city great again – by reclaiming abandoned properties, organizing neighborhood associations and participating in volunteer activities. On Monday, every brick that was hurled, every fire that was set, every store that was looted – each one

insulted and undermined their work.

As Obama noted, there remain too many unanswered questions about the death of Gray and the stubborn persistence of an underclass in America. At the same time, as he also said, “we can’t just leave this to the police.” In that sense, the scenes across the city of Baltimore residents cleaning up the mess are heartening.

And just maybe it’s not too much to hope that Monday’s marauders will see their elders and neighbors doing this work – the kind of work that has been going on for decades – and see anew the value of pitching in and building up.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Not Hillary To the Editor: Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has finally announced her candidacy for the president of the United States. Over the past two years, it seems she has included in almost every political event a simple statement such as – Isn’t it time for a woman president?

Why should anyone vote for a candidate because of sex? Prime Minister Golda Meir of Israel, former United Kingdom Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and current German Chancellor Angela Merkel were elected to their positions not because they are women but because of their leadership and experience. Hillary has none of these qualities.

The State Department is responsible for American embassies throughout the world. With the destruction of the U.S consulate in Benghazi and the murder of its ambassador, Hillary showed a complete lack of understanding of her responsibilities. When asked before congressional committees

about Benghazi, she stated “what difference at this point does it make.” It was her requirement to protect every embassy and personnel, but Hillary showed that she does not care. Is that leadership?

Hillary has no recorded experience. As Secretary of State, she set up a private email account using a secret Internet server.

I would think the government requires all emails to use the approved government Internet servers. Hillary showed that she was above the government because she is Hillary. When the liberal media started to investigate the secret Internet server, rather than opening up her emails, it was reported that the emails were destroyed. Hillary seemingly deleted her paper trail.

There will be a female president, but not Hillary, because of her lack of leadership and destroying all evidence of her experience.

Shakou Japanese restaurant exudes urban vibe Eatery opened this month in St. Charles

The restaurant recently opened its doors at 312 W. Main St. in downtown St. Charles.

Shakou is currently serving only dinner. Lunch hours are set to begin on June 15.

“We are trying to create a city vibe in the suburbs, while doing a tremendous product and great service, and having just a very, very fun atmosphere,” said Shakou founder Aleks Dupor.

This is Shakou’s second location. The restaurant has garnered rave reviews after opening in Libertyville two years ago, being named by the online reservation service Open Table as one of the top 100 “Hot Spot” restaurants in America.

Shakou’s main floor features a dining room with a sushi bar and a cocktail lounge with a bar. The restaurant’s second floor features a sake room for small groups and an upper mezzanine with a spacious bar area for before-dinner drinks and cocktail celebrations.

Dupor and his business partner, Adam Garvanian, head up operations at the restaurant, along with owner Ed Hartigan. Shakou Executive Chef Sang Choi has 15 years of experience under his belt, including working at such notable restaurants as Blue Fin in Chicago and Blue Ginger in

Lynne Schwartz, executive director of the Downtown St. Charles Partnership, said the opening of Shakou fits in well with the partnership’s new branding effort: “St. Charles – Discover Your City Side.”

“We do have all these urban type[s] of restaurants,” Schwartz said. “It’s exciting for us that they chose downtown St. Charles.”

Shakou’s menu includes a variety of sushi, including tekka (tuna), negi hamachi (yellow tail), and kappa (cucumber). But the menu also features other items, including chicken teriyaki, lobster, steak, shrimp and braised short ribs.

“The menu is very open to all styles,” Dupor said. “Our menu is very expansive. My executive

chef is a tremendous talent.”

The menu will change two to three times a year based on the season, he said.

“The chef is very attuned to changing things up and bringing in seasonal items,” Dupor said.

The restaurant’s look also is open-ended, with modern-looking furniture blending with chandeliers.

“It’s a little different,” Dupor said. “The style itself is very eclectic, with a very urban feel.”

The restaurant has a seating capacity of about 250 people, and the restaurant also can be booked for parties.

“If someone took the entire place up, I could probably hold a party for up to 300 people,” Dupor said.

Contributing to Shakou’s lively feel, the restaurant plans to host DJ events on the weekend. For those looking for a urban type of restaurant, Dupor said he believes the restaurant is filling a niche in the area.

“We are giving people in the suburbs the chance to feel like they are going into the city and not have the city pricing and everything,” Dupor said.

BATAVIA – The sometimes obscene and excitedly offbeat humor in Albright Theatre’s “Wonder of the World” kept the audience laughing from the first scene to that last, despite the show’s darker motifs.

Written by American playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, “Wonder of the World” follows the story of a woman named Cass, who leaves her husband (after learning about a bizarre sexual fetish with Barbie heads) and embarks on a journey of self-discovery.

Ending up in Niagara Falls to find her freedom and her fate, Cass falls in with a cast of “crazies” working out their own issues, including a suicidal alcoholic, a tour-boat captain, clown therapist and a pair of private detectives that grapple with the nuances of old age and being married way too long.

One-liners were handled with particular care by Lynda Wellhausen, who played a slew of minor comedic characters. Making her debut at the Albright Theater, Wellhausen took the opportunity to showcase an impressive wheelhouse of accents and personas to bring six characters to life.

In his third production at the Albright Theatre, Galen Malick brought authenticity to the stage, breathing subtlety into his role as Captain Mike, the man vying for the heart of main character Cass (Heidi Swarthout). Apparently, the former Batavia resident rekindled his love for acting in 2011, and it became evident during the per-

Swarthout and Cheryl Rice (Lois) made a formidable on-stage team, bringing a childlike naivette and detached realism, respectively, to each of their roles. JP Quirk, who was in the film “Divergent” and played Channing Tatum’s stand-in and double in “Jupiter Rising,” played Cass’s whiny and sexually-disturbed husband, Kip. The husband and wife who moonlighted as private detectives hired by Kip to track down Cass, were played

by Albright-debut-actor Jen Connon (Karla) and Joel L. Greenblatt (Glen).

The constant bickering by the longtime married couple hit pretty close to home.

Laugh-out-loud funny, irreverent, refreshingly strange and profanity-laden, “Wonder of the World” was wonderfully executed; and it’s no “wonder” why Albright Theatre has been around for 41 seasons. If you haven’t yet made it to Albright Theatre for a show, “Wonder of the World” would make a great introduction.

Mettetal does it all St. Charles North claims second straight win over East

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – It took Tyler Mettetal a couple innings to gain his composure on the mound in Wednesday’s game against rival St. Charles East, but once he found his groove, it was smooth sailing.

Mettetal struck out five of the last six batters he faced in his complete game victory, an 8-1 win for North to take the first two games of the threegame Upstate Eight Conference River Division series from the Saints.

Mettetal also drove in three runs at the plate, including a two-run double into the left field corner in the seventh to cement the win for the North Stars (16-4, 10-3 UEC River).

“I didn’t feel the best mechanically in the first couple of innings,” Mettetal said. “As a sophomore starting this game there were some nerves, but as the game went on I felt stron-

ger and it showed.”

North took advantage of five East errors and scored early to give Mettetal a two-run lead before he even stepped on the mound.

After Mettetal drove in Brendan Joyce in the first inning, Cory Wright reached third on the play. After the Saints vacated home plate, thinking timeout was called, Wright took off for home and scored the North Stars’ second run.

“He’s tried that a couple of times this year,” North coach Todd Genke said. “That play really springboarded us today.

It’s such a heads up play and whenever you can add runs on plays like that, it really can make a difference.”

The only run allowed by Mettetal was unearned as a ground ball took a tough hop on his brother, Zach, at shortstop, allowing East’s Reid Olson to score after doubling earlier in the inning.

The sophomore pitcher went the distance, throwing 104 pitches (64 strikes), striking out eight, while giving up four hits and walking three.

Genke said he was looking forward to seeing Mettetal pitching Wednesday, knowing it was a meaningful game for both the sophomore and his teammates.

“He’s starting to really learn how to pitch,” Genke said. “He used to be a thrower, but he’s learning how to actually pitch now. In the [middle innings] he wasn’t showing me the body language I wanted to see, but then all of a sudden he turned it on and it was good to see because he wanted to stay out there.”

East (12-6, 7-4) has lost four straight River Division games after winning its first seven.

With just five runs scored over the past four games, the Saints can ill-afford to make defensive mistakes, and 17 errors in those four losses have

come back to hurt East against teams that have taken advantage.

Coach Len Asquini would be much more concerned if he hadn’t seen his team play so well early in the season.

“We just need to get back to playing smarter baseball,” Asquini said. “We just aren’t making plays we normally do, and when you’re hitting poorly, those things just can’t happen. Tomorrow is a new day and, hopefully, we can correct some of these things.”

East tried to rally in the fifth, trailing by four, and put two runners aboard against Mettetal. But after Austin Gift flew out to center for the second out, Wright made a leaping catch at first base to rob Jimmy Dale of driving in at least one, maybe two runs.

That started a string of eight straight batters that Mettetal retired to end the game.

The series finale is at 4:30 p.m. today at North.

Jillian Waslawski said she didn’t doubt for a second that her sister would get back to make the catch.

“I have faith in my teammates,” the freshman said as she smiled. “I have faith in my sister.”

Poulin was not as confident when the ball left Radabaugh’s bat.

“I was concerned,” Poulin said of the deep drive. “I was concerned when she came up to the plate.”

Two throwing errors in the seventh by North shortstop Allison Hausl allowed Geneva’s Kate Geary and Sarah Baurer to reach base and set up the dramatic finish.

Neither coach was pleased with their squad’s overall defensive performance.

“We probably gave them seven or eight outs,” Poulin said. “We were fortunate to come out with a win.”

“It was tremendous that we were only down 1-0 after two innings. They sent 13 batters to the plate,” Geneva coach Greg Dierks said. “They had a number of chances those first two innings.”

Two Geneva errors in the third inning opened the door for a three-run North Star inning. After third baseman Erin Nemetz led off with a bloop single to left, consecutive errors by shortstop Anna Geary and third baseman Molly Wrenn loaded the bases.

North Star catcher Alex Millett drove a deep sacrifice fly to center, scoring Nemetz.

A pretty strong connection has developed between the baseball programs at St. Charles North and Michigan State, a connection that started when former North Stars Jeff Holm played for the Spartans a few years back.

Holm was named the Big Ten Player of the Year in 2011.

Now, Richardson is in his senior season in East Lansing, Michigan, where he’s started every game over the past three seasons.

“Obviously, Jeff Holm, being the first to go there. I’ve known Jeff for a long time.

He obviously excelled here at Michigan State, and it’s really cool to kind of step into his shoes and kind of be another St. Charles kid coming here,” Richardson said. “It’s a good time. (St. Charles North baseball coach Todd) Genke has a pretty good relationship with our coaches here at State. It’s really cool to have your high

Richardson hasn’t always been a Spartan.

He picked Nebraska out of high school and didn’t play as a freshman after an injury.

He then spent a year at Elgin Community College before choosing Michigan State. He said he fell in love with the place right away, but it was some trusted advice from Holm that really put his decision over the top.

“When I came here it was like a no-brainer, I was like, ‘This is where I want to go and play for this school,’ ” Richardson said. “[Holm] texted me back and was like, ‘Absolutely man. It’ll be the best experience of your life.’

Richardson had the luxury of being able to play right away after coming to Michigan State. He’s been the team’s starting shortstop for three seasons and has yet to miss a start.

Some of his favorite onfield moments have come this season.

Michigan State beat rival Michigan for the first time in Richardson’s tenure as a Spartan this season at a game under the lights at Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers.

Michigan State also pulled off a road sweep of Oregon this season and last season defeated Oregon State when the Beavers were the No. 1 team in the country, two moments Richardson also ranks high on his list of memories.

“They do the cliché thing and take it one game at a time,” Poulin said. “Our biggest game is always our next game. Our next big game is against Batavia on Friday.”

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North’s Kaitlyn Waslawski dropped the game ball that coach Tom Poulin tossed to her for the game-saving catch she made with her back to the center field wall Wednesday evening.

Moments earlier, Waslawski was sure-handed, corralling in the blast that Geneva’s Annika Radabaugh hit, with two runners on, to preserve the North Stars’ 5-2 victory.

“Abby [Howlett] talked me through it the whole way,” Waslawski said.

The catch sealed the victory for Waslawski’s younger sister, Jillian, who worked out of trouble in both the Geneva fifth and sixth innings.

“Jillian is as tough as nails,” Poulin said. “As a freshman, she has wins over Waubonsie [Valley], Geneva ...”

Richardson said it was strange going up against his former team, and in particular a long-time teammate.

“I try to not to look at games, who we’re playing, but at the same time it’s my former school,” Richardson said. “Last year, we ended up losing all four games that we played against them, three during the regular season and one during the Big Ten tournament. So that was kind of a disappointment that we couldn’t take at least one of them. It was weird to see a couple guys on the team that I played with. I got an at-bat against Zach Hirsch (who also played at North and now is in the Milwaukee Brewers organization), which was

really weird because I’d been playing with him since I was a sophomore in high school.

It was definitely a little weird.”

There isn’t much time left in Richardson’s career at Michigan State, but he’s certainly going to enjoy the final stretch.

The Spartans entered the week with a 26-17 record and rank sixth in the Big Ten with a 9-6 conference mark.

Richardson’s goal: Do whatever he can to make that record even better.

“Any time you get to go on the field and put the uniform on, it’s an honor,” he said.

“It’s something that I’ve done my whole life. And my biggest passion is to go out on the field and help the team win. Any way I can do that, I will. My No. 1 goal is just to help the team win.”

NOTEWORTHY North Stars keep clean on ‘D’ As the younger sister of St. Charles North senior center fielder Kaitlyn Waslawski, Jillian Waslawski absorbed her share of North Stars softball through the years.

Still, confidence doesn’t result from osmosis, leaving the North freshman right-hander to generate her own behind a slick defense that includes her sibling.

“We’re just clean,” Jillian Waslawski said. “We make plays, and we come through when we need it most. When I’m having a down day, they’re up, and they’re always there to pick me up.”

Such stretches have been few and far between for the North Stars lately.

Entering Wednesday, North joined defending Upstate Eight Conference River Division champion St. Charles East and Geneva as the lone league teams with two conference losses.

One reason for North’s surge: A renewed premium on defense.

“We try to practice perfection,” shortstop Allison Hausl said. “If you

practice and try to strive for perfection – I mean, not everyone’s perfect, but you can get there.”

North controlled a majority of its chances in last week’s victory at East.

The rematch is set for May 8, one week before the North Stars travel to Geneva, which visited North on Wednesday.

“I’m excited, because I think we’re only going up from here,” Jillian Waslawski said. “We’re just going to get better and better, and it’s going to be a fun ride.”

Landry scored a goal in each half as Geneva beat Glenbard East, 2-1, Wednesday. She scored the game-winning goal with a diving header 11 minutes into the second half.

“I didn’t want to run into anyone,” Landry said with a laugh. “I just kind of dove in there. I saw it hit [the goalkeeper’s] hands so I knew it was going to come right down.”

Breathe easier by minimizing COPD symptoms Dear Doctor K: I have COPD. My doctor is great about prescribing medication, but he doesn’t give me much other advice. So, I’ll ask you: What can I do to improve my quality of life?

Dear Reader: There’s a lot you can do. And I have to admit that not all doctors are very good about telling you how your actions can protect your health.

First, some basics. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) refers to a group of disorders that damage the lungs and make breathing increasingly difficult. Common symptoms include a mucus-producing cough, breathlessness, rapid breathing, wheezing, tightness in the chest and fatigue.

You can do a lot to minimize the symptoms from COPD so you can continue to do the things you enjoy: 1. Prevent respiratory infections. Any respiratory infection – even the common cold – can worsen COPD symptoms. To reduce your risk: • Wash your hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based instant hand sanitizers.

• Get vaccinated against pneumococcal pneumonia.

• Get a flu shot every year.

It can reduce the severity and duration of your illness.

2. Participate in pulmonary rehabilitation. Pulmonary rehab combines exercise therapy, breathing retraining, education and psychological support to help you to carry out day-to-day activities with greater ease and independence. I strongly recommend it to all of my patients with COPD. 3. Exercise regularly. Regular exercise helps maintain strength and prevents you from becoming easily tired during physical activities. Aerobic exercise, like walking, is most beneficial. Aim for at least 20 minutes on most days.

4. Do breathing exercises.

Pursed-lip breathing is a valuable technique you can learn in pulmonary rehabilitation. Use it to pace yourself through physical activities so you don’t feel out of breath.

5. Eat and drink regularly.

Small meals are easier to digest

and use less energy than large meals. Try having smaller meals throughout the day instead of three large meals. And drink plenty of water, which will help you to cough up mucus more easily.

6. Avoid lung irritants. Many things, from dry air to pollen, can irritate your lungs. Here are some tips for avoiding irritants: • Use a humidifier when the air is very dry. Dry air can irritate the airways.

• Ventilate your home to reduce dust and cooking exhaust in the air. Unless you are allergic to outdoor allergens, keep windows open when the weather is warm enough.

• Have furnaces and chimneys inspected and cleaned regularly.

• Avoid aerosol products.

• If you have allergies, avoid whatever triggers them: pollen, pet dander, dust, mold, etc.

All of the things I’ve suggested you do to protect yourself against the consequences of COPD take time, and some take money. Believe me: They’re worth it.

Things about to change now Dr. Wallace: I have recently become an instant mother to two children ages 11 and 13. I married their father two weeks ago and this is my first marriage as well as my first experience with parenthood. My husband’s wife died in an automobile accident four years ago. My new stepchildren are used to having their own way, especially when dad was on a business trip and they had a sitter.

I believe things are going to change now that I’m a member of the family, but I want to gain the respect and love of Justin and Rachel. I don’t plan on being the “mean stepmother.”

3. Think positive.

4. Even though teens may not complete a task perfectly, never redo what they think they have already done. This will create resentment and lower self-esteem.

5. Establish a routine like making their own beds every day and putting their laundry in the hamper. If they stick to it, they’ll feel good about themselves and take pride in their rooms.

6. Praise them for a job well-done. Congratulate them for a specific task that has been accomplished. Instead of telling them they did a fine job cleaning, tell them why you like the job that they did. This positive reinforcement works best if you can give the compliment as soon as you notice the job. You can even leave the compliment in a note on their dresser or door if they are not around at the moment.

When they have accomplished a task, such as learning how to do the laundry, let other family members know about it. Praise from others also lets teens know that their actions are noticed and appreciated.

Being a newlywed and a new stepmother is not an easy task. But showing your love, compassion and fairness will bring positive results and much happiness to everyone.

Discarding at the bridge table can add years to your life, especially when facing a predicament like East’s in this deal. What should he do?

South is in three no-trump.

West cashes his four club tricks, dummy pitching a spade on the fourth. But what should East discard at tricks three and four?

Assuming a raise of one notrump to two no-trump would have been invitational, not a minor-suit transfer, North’s sequence shows about nine points with a four-card heart suit.

South, with a maximum 17, has no hesitation in bidding game.

South has eight top tricks: two spades, three hearts and three diamonds. His best chance is a 3-3 diamond fit, but we can see that they are 4-2. However, maybe East will not discard correctly.

East seems to be squeezed in three suits. He needs to remember to keep equal length with the dummy. East must discard two spades and hope that his partner can hold the suit. Note that if East discards either a heart or a diamond, declarer gets four tricks in that suit and nine in all.

By ELIZABETH MAYHEW Special to The Washington Post Lately, I have been obsessed with a particular color combination: pink and orange.

The origin of my color romance could come from several subliminal sources: the Dunkin’ Donuts that I pass every morning on my way to work; my local liquor store’s newly installed Veuve Clicquot Rosé window display; Anjelica Huston’s incredibly chic pale pink suit and orange Hermes bag in a scene in “The Royal Tenenbaums” (which I just rewatched on a Wes Anderson binge); or the jacket designs of several books (and rooms!) by the legendary 1960s British decorator David Hicks, who I recently rediscovered after organizing a bookcase.

Whatever the inspiration, the fact remains: The perky color duo is a panacea for this past winter.

Pink and orange are a happy, likable combination – at least to me. To understand the root of my sudden obsession, I contacted Bevil Conway, an artist and associate professor of neuroscience at Wellesley College, who studies how color is processed in the brain.

Dunkin’ and covered only one wall in a pale pink (Benjamin Moore’s Ballet Slippers), and then – inspired by German-born American artist Josef Albers – painted a cube in shades of orange over it (Benjamin Moore’s Butterfly Wings, Tangerine Fusion and Habanero). The rest of the room I kept white – white slipcovered bed, white flokati rug – with the exception of a strong color-blocked fabric shade (Christopher Farr’s Untitled) and an orange leather chair and ottoman to anchor and balance the room.

Although neither Roan nor her

mother had any idea that the room was inspired by doughnuts and champagne, Roan likened lying in her bed to sitting at the beach and watching the sun go down.

Conway, while skeptical of claims that any color – or combination of colors – has universal appeal, says that “color is powerful, and it has special access to the parts of our brain that care about what other people think and how we feel.”

He explains that color preferences are largely tied to our associations with those colors.

Thus my current craving for pink and orange has more to do with the things and experiences that I associate the colors with (doughnuts plus champagne equal happiness) than to the colors themselves.

One would need to go far back in time to trace the origin of this merry color – way before Dunkin’s 1976 pink-and-orange logo makeover.

The pairing of the two colors has a long history in both indigenous South American and Mexican cultures; why those cultures would have chosen the pairing is a larger question, but there are two attributes that make these two colors stand out.

Pink and orange are similar; they sit near each other on the color wheel, so when paired together they can appear aggressive and, to some, even jarring.

Conway explains that when two very similar things are put in front of us, our visual systems are wired to enhance the differences between them, which makes for a more dynamic visual experience.

Pink and orange also cover a wide spectrum of shades. This adds to the versatility of the color combo. Take, for example, the pink that Dunkin’ Donuts uses versus the one that Veuve Clicquot does; Dunkin’s is bolder and more vibrant, while the champagne company’s is paler and more sophisticated.

Both of these factors need to be taken into consideration if you choose to use these two colors for your interior.

When I recently pitched my pink-and-orange scheme to 8-year-old Roan Roth and her mother, Meg, I was careful to consider not only the shades of colors, but also the amount of color I would use.

My goal was to make the room fun and lively but not so vibrant that little Roan couldn’t concentrate on her homework.

I borrowed my palette more from Veuve Clicquot than from

It’s OK to believe in the pigments of your imagination THE WASHINGTON POST Susan Hable, author of “A Colorful Home: Create Lively Palettes for Every Room,” joined Post staff writer Jura Koncius last week on our Home Front online chat.

Here is an edited excerpt.

Q: How can you tell what the undertones to a paint color are – for example, a peach that ends up looking more pink once on the walls? Or whether a white will have a yellow undertone?

Susan Hable: Because lights are different in the paint store, at home and in every room in a house, the color is going to shift no matter what. The paint store should have the truest bulbs, but I usually step outside when I’m looking at undertones.

Q: If I paint the baseboards in my bathroom a whiter white, do I have to paint the doors

and door trim as well?

Hable: It is preferable. You will be happier in the long run.

Q: My home is a terra-cotta orange brick (very Colonial-style). The brick is punctuated with almost-black and cream bricks as well, and the mortar is a taupe color. It currently has black shutters and a black front double door.

Do you have any recommendations for door, shutter, and trim colors that might work with this brick?

Hable: Have you considered just changing the front door to something fun? I have a pale blue house with white everything else and started with a wild hotpink lacquered door. Now it’s cobalt blue. It’s just paint! I don’t know if the rest needs changing unless you want to switch it all to cream and then do something different on the door.

(tubs, toilets, sinks) are almond, and the trim throughout the house is ivory. I love the crisp look of white subway tile and marble. How do I marry the two?

Hable: There are great tiles that have cream and white together. We used Calacatta Gold small hex tiles for a bathroom, so look at that for starters. You can also use a fun color for the floor to work with the almond such as emerald green or black, for drama.

Think about working with the almond, not against it.

Q: We finally have the budget for a redo of our living room! It’s smallish with a pass-through at either end from the foyer to the kitchen. There’s also a bank of windows on one long wall (so lots of light) and a fireplace on one short wall.

What other tips can you give (i.e., furniture colors, scale, height, etc.)?

Hable: I love the challenge of a smaller room. The light that you get will automatically make the room seem larger.

I’d find a colorful rug that covers much of the floor and then accessorize with color in your art and decorative cushions.

Since it’s a pass-through room it should be upbeat, and furniture should stay on the smaller side. I love low chairs, which help heighten the ceiling.

Q: I am redoing an aboveground basement that still suffers from a lack of sunlight. I painted one room Sherwin-Williams Rice Paddy (a pretty apple green). I am thinking of bumping it up to Benjamin Moore’s Straw and using Benjamin Moore’s Sugar Cookie on the ceiling and Simply White on the trim.

Am I headed in the right direction? Will the yellow and green work together?

Hable: I love green, too. I suggest using one color for the walls in a semi-gloss, to try and get some reflection/ light. I love Benjamin Moore’s White Dove. Go for a crisp, bright white for the ceiling.

Hable: I love the idea of framing a wallpaper that can be movable, or larger framed art is great. Don’t use too many little art pieces on a wall like that.

Q: My apartment is filled with color – yellow, purple, pink, etc. I am moving in with my significant other and want our place to be colorful, but I also understand that he might not want to be surrounded by such feminine colors. What is a good strategy for compromising on color?

Hable: I’d look at colors in the gray family. I had a bedroom in New York City that was Benjamin Moore’s Sidewalk Gray, and it would shift colors all day, and art was great on it. Currently my bedroom is a sky blue. There are many windows, so it flows to the outside – something to consider with the way the room is situated in the house.
