Parade, garage sale on tap in Batavia

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Between the 40th annual Batavia Loyalty Day Parade and the Batavia City-Wide Garage Sale that benefits the Batavia Fireworks Fund, there will be no shortage of activities this weekend in Batavia.

For those who like to shop for bargains, the 21st annual Batavia City-Wide Garage Sale will be Friday and Saturday.

Participants pay a $30 registration fee to list their addresses in the garage sales. The fees collected will go to the Batavia Fireworks Fund.

Garage sale maps are available starting today at several locations, including the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave., Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave., and the Batavia Park District office, 327 W. Wilson St.

The city once again will come together as a community during Sunday’s 40th annual Batavia VFW Loyalty Day Parade. Loyalty Day was established by Congress in the 1950s as a Cold War response to the

communist May Day parades in the Soviet Union and China.

The Cold War ended, but the Batavia Loyalty Day has remained a strong tradition since 1975.

“The community is very proud to have this ongoing parade,” said Batavia VFW member Andy Franke, who is this year’s parade chairman.

“There are a lot of people who grew up going to the parade.”

“Kilroy Was Here,” a popu-

lar phrase during World War II, is the theme for Sunday’s parade, and Cliff Bartelt, longtime Batavia Loyalty Day volunteer and participant, will be grand marshal for the parade.

The Batavia Community Band will provide musical entertainment for spectators. The parade will step off at 1:30 p.m.

Sunday at Raddant Road and Wilson Street on the city’s east side and will continue west on Wilson to Route 25.

It then will proceed south to the Batavia VFW post at 645 S. River St. Route 25 traffic will be detoured to Route 31 from 1 to 4 p.m., and Wilson Street will be closed between Island Avenue and Woodland Hills Road during the entirety of the event, including the Wilson Street bridge.

Traffic will be detoured to the Fabyan Parkway and Route 56 bridges during the closure.

St. Charles ranked fifth out of 100 statewide municipalities, according to the rankings released Monday. Nearby cities Elgin and Aurora came in at 46th and 58th, respectively.

But for the 61-year-old, being inducted into the Fox Valley Arts Hall of Fame is a special honor.

“Sometimes, the hardest places to get noticed are the places where you grew up,” Gibson said. “I can win other awards, whether it’s in Los Angeles or New York or the other places I’ve lived, but coming back home, when they acknowledge you, that’s always special.”

The Hall of Fame honors and showcases the work and performances of artists associated with the Fox Valley who have achieved distinction nationally and internationally.

The awards will be presented at an induction banquet celebration Thursday at Villa Olivia in Bartlett.

A 1970 West Aurora High School graduate, Gibson was a member of three different Grammy award-winning bands with B.J. Thomas, The

Bill Gaither Trio and the Lionel Hampton Orchestra.

“It’s great that there is such an organization like this that still puts a value on the arts,” Gibson said. “I’m sure there are many people that would love to be inducted, and I was just fortunate enough to be one of those.”

During his life, Gibson has received numerous honors. His hosting of the show “Windy City Alive” garnered him an Emmy in Chicago for best music and variety show for a series, and Gibson was nominated for another Emmy for hosting the Miss Illinois Pageant on WGN-TV. As a pageant host, Gibson has been involved in more than 1,500 telecasts around the world, including Miss USA, Miss Universe in Puerto Rico, Miss Globe in Turkey and Miss America.

He recently started producing and hosting a new international model search for the MGM Grand.

Gibson said he is glad of all the opportunities he has had.

“Of course, I have some wonderful stories,” Gibson said. “I’ll never forget the

first time I saw Halle Berry. ... I crowned [her] as the winner and got to know her. And I crowned her later as Miss Ohio.”

Gibson said he has strived to give the contestants a positive experience through his hosting duties.

“My job basically is to make their experience a good one and make their experience something positive in their life,” Gibson said. “My job as a pageant host is not something that I ever set out to do, but it’s something that I have really enjoyed doing.”

Gibson said one of his most surreal moments in his entertainment career was when he was performing in New York City in the mid-1980s with Lionel Hampton and had dinner with Frank Sinatra.

“That is definitely a night I will never forget,” Gibson said.

Gibson said he has done more in his career than he could ever imagine.

“I’m very grateful and incredibly blessed for doing things that, quite frankly, I never dreamed I would have been doing,” he said.

GENEVA – An evaluation of the Kane County Judicial Center’s mechanical systems found hundreds of issues that could take more than $1 million to fix, the Committee of the Whole learned Tuesday.

“It’s going to be extremely expensive,” Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said.

Chief Judge Judith Brawka has advocated for a solution to the judicial center’s too-hot and too-cold temperatures.

Rooms can range from the 50s to the 90s, she has said, citing the temperature as the single most consistent complaint she has gotten from the St. Charles Township facility.

In January, the County Board authorized a nearly $40,000 contract with Hill Mechanical Services to perform a study that would help diagnose the judicial center’s HVAC problems.

The independent third party found 449 issues that, by its estimates, could take an estimated $1.245 million to resolve, said Don Biggs, operations staff executive for the county.

But, he said, costs could be lowered to an estimated $860,000 if the county used

a different approach. Staff also is recommending an additional $318,000 of investments, including $10,000 in staff training and $60,000 for a full-time maintenance mechanic qualified in HVAC, he said.

The repairs would be completed in phases, Biggs said, suggesting $678,000 in work for 2014. This first phase would address an urgent life-safety issue regarding fire and smoke dampers and would include a fire alarm system replacement, he said.

Board member John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, recommended moving the life-safety issues forward independently of the other suggested projects and accelerating that process.

Lauzen said he would move those items to the Executive Committee – which is set to meet May 7 – with the board’s permission.

Other problems at the judicial center include the poor water quality in the hot water system, Biggs said.

“The water’s filthy,” he said.

Biggs noted the $1.245 million estimate doesn’t include other aspects that might need repaired in the 23-year-old building, such as plumbing and electrical systems.

Kaneland approves deal with energy conservation company

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – The Kaneland School Board on Monday night approved a five-year contract with an energy conservation company, but the move was not without debate, with one board member voting against the agreement.

The contract is with Cenergistic, a company that offers energy management and conservation programs to school districts throughout the country. The company was represented at the meeting, and at a meeting earlier this month, by Bob Davis, a regional president, as well as Jack Barshinger, the former Batavia School District 101 superintendent.

The company promises significant energy savings, as much as $98,000 in the first year, and access to its experts, who make recommendations after learning how a district operates.

It would have an energy specialist work with the district, and the aim is to “embed

ourselves in your culture,” Davis said. The cost to Kaneland is $9,000 a month. The district, in a memo, noted that energy savings are “expected to exceed all costs during this time period.” Davis said the goal is “to reduce what you are spending” on electricity, gas and water.

Board member Pedro Rivas said that while it is suggested the district ultimately would save $2 million as a result of the agreement, there would be a cost of more than $500,000. He said the district could opt to save the cost and try to implement changes that would lead to energy savings.

“If we do nothing, it saves us $500,000,” he said. He said he understood there was “a wealth of information they are giving us,” but he said the district probably could save energy without the agreement.

“Why should I pay them a half-million dollars when we can try it ourselves?” he said.

Rivas was the only board member to vote against the proposal, although Tony Valente said he did not necessarily disagree with Rivas.

Valente said he was familiar with the process from time spent in another district and, of the energy specialist, Valente said “that person went around turning off

lights.”

Valente, however, said he was voting for the agreement.

Another board member who voted for the agreement, Peter Lopatin, said he supported the decision, but said he was unclear about some of the details and language in the contract. For instance, he noted that Cenergistic would determine the compliance on some implementations and said he couldn’t tell how the district would be held accountable.

“As a nitpicker, I have little questions … none of which are real deal breakers,” Lopatin said.

In another decision, the board did not approve the restoration of an assistant track coach position at Kaneland High School. At a previous meeting, there was discussion that indicated several assistant coaches in the district were volunteering their services.

Superintendent Jeff Schuler said it is a bigger issue that should be dealt with districtwide, and “not in isolation.” Lori Shroka, an assistant track coach at the high school and the president of the Kaneland Education Association, spoke in open session, saying that as many as 21 assistant coaches in the district

Vestuto recently sold an outlot on Route 47 in front of the Jewel store, 800 N. Main St., Elburn, to Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee Vishal Vaghani.

“They’re going to put a brand new building there,” Vestuto said Tuesday.

Vaghani owns at least three other Dunkin’ Donuts locations, Vestuto said. Vestuto estimates that construction on the Elburn Dunkin’ Donuts will begin in a few months after Vaghani obtains a building permit and other paperwork.

Another Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee purchased the former Goody’s Fast Food site at 2057 Lincoln Highway in St. Charles.

The business officially closed after manager Lorenzo Alba auctioned off equipment April 22, Vestuto said. Vestuto was the listing agent for the Goody’s site.

“If it’s a classic, we’re not going to throw it out,” Alms said.

All of the libraries called weeding an ongoing process.

At St. Charles, Heidi Krueger, the reference services manager, said there is a written document “that outlines the goals, purpose and criteria for weeding items.” It is different

for each collection.

“For us, weeding is the systematic removal of materials which are no longer useful to our patrons,” Krueger said.

“We want to have collections of the highest quality, which are suitable, attractive and, above all, relevant for our community.”

Although space can be a factor in weeding, officials say it’s not often the prima-

ry reason materials are removed. Krueger said it is “never the only factor.” At Geneva, Walsh said 900 to 1,000 books will come in on a given month, and there are times officials “would be a little less ruthless” if more space existed.

At Batavia, Stacey Peterson, manager of the adult services department, listed similar reasons for weeding out a

ebbie Walsh, head of adult services at the Geneva Public Library, remembered a time that libraries had to remove all books they had that covered the canning process, after the method changed and the previous process no longer was considered safe.

“All books that were out before that date had to be removed,” Walsh said, adding that some of them likely were relatively new and “theoretically could have been a year old at that point.”

The discovery meant the existing books on the subject were considered to be flawed and outdated. It’s an extreme example of a process all libraries go through, called weeding or deselecting. Those in the area who participate in the process, and there are several at each library, say there are multiple reasons why books and other materials are weeded out.

Books must be removed when they become damaged or worn. But because library officials look to keep their collections fresh, there are other reasons that books are cycled out. If a book hasn’t been checked out in a significant length of time, someone dedicated to weeding that particular section may choose to remove it. Also, if a library has several copies of a book, someone might look to take it out, to make way for new books.

Several local libraries – including Geneva, St. Charles, Batavia and Elburn – described methods that were similar. At Elburn, Mary Lynn Alms, the director of the Town and Country Public Library, said the process can be different for various sections of the library. For instance, information in fiction books isn’t as likely to become obsolete as books in the science section.

She said medical books also can be a high priority for those in the weeding process.

In fiction, books might be removed if they’re not popular.

And some books wouldn’t be

She also said for fiction books, officials will check to see whether the book is listed on the “Fiction Core Collection,” which will include books she said “every midsize library ought to have.” She said travel and medical books will be looked at on an annual basis. It can take years to get through the fiction section.

“It’s very important,” Peterson said. “When we talk about collection development and collection management, a lot of times people think about the acquisition of new materials. … The other side of that is deacquisition of books that have served their purpose.”

Library friends organizations can get a big help from the weeding process. Ellen Bassett, of the Geneva Library Friends group, said such books make up “a pretty good part of our sale.”

“About 50 percent of our books are from the withdrawn, mostly from nonfiction,” she said.

Those at each library said that most books are able to be sold at such sale events. Peterson said at Batavia, all but a “fairly small amount” would go to a sale.

“The only ones that don’t are the ones that are damaged,” she said. “If they’re falling apart, or if there’s water damage, they need to be removed.”

At Elburn, Alms said she doesn’t find it particularly difficult to part with certain books as part of the process.

“You just disassociate yourself from it,” she said.

“You’ve got other things that are painful.”

But at St. Charles, Krueger said “of course it’s sometimes difficult to weed.”

“You’re never going to find a higher concentration of bibliophiles than in a library,” she said. “Librarians love books. And just like everybody else, we can develop sentimental attachments to items we’ve read, or even items we’ve purchased for the collection. But our training and expertise helps us to overcome sentiment to make sure that our collections are the best that they can be for our community.”

8OBITUARIES FRANCIS J. CYR Born: June 7, 1928 Died: April 27, 2014 FORT MYERS, Fla. – Francis J. Cyr, 85, of Fort Myers, Fla., former longtime resident of Lombard and Batavia, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014, at his home in Fort Myers, Fla., surrounded by his family.

He was born June 7, 1928, in Amesbury, Mass., the son of George and Elizabeth (Burke) Cyr. Fran proudly served his country in the Army Medical Corps. He graduated from Marquette University with his bachelor’s degree and received his master’s degree from Loyola University. Fran worked for many years as an analyst, manager and later executive in the banking industry. He is known around Geneva as the longtime co-owner of the Fourth Street Café.

Fran was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an avid sports fan, dedicated to the Cubs, Bears and Blackhawks. When not following sports, Fran was playing bocceball and tennis. He was a dog lover and will be reunited with his faithful companion, Lizzie. His greatest

enjoyment in life, however, was spending time with his family. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his children, Mark of Rock Island, Kim (Herb) Miller of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Kyle (Nick) Vitullo of Arlington Heights; grandchildren, Michelle (Tony) Bianchi of Geneva, Tara Miller of Chicago, Meredith (Martin) Macyszyn of Tampa, Fla., Annette Burns, Norman Miller and Justin Vitullo; great-grandchildren, Miranda and Rino Bianchi; and many dear nieces, nephews and friends.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – After little more than a year as pastor of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Batavia, Monsignor Aaron Brodeski has gone on leave from his post while the Catholic Diocese of Rockford proceeds with an investigation into his conduct, church officials said.

“The Diocese of Rockford has received an allegation regarding the conduct of your pastor, Monsignor Aaron Brodeski,” according to a statement from Bishop David Malloy, which was read at

Holy Cross spokeswoman uncertain how long review will take Saturday and Sunday Mass, diocese spokeswoman Penny Wiegert said.

“The allegation is currently under investigation. To be clear, the alleged conduct in no way pertains to anything having to do with minors, parish funds or anything pertaining to Holy Cross Parish or school,” according to the statement. “Monsignor Brodeski has agreed to take a leave of absence, effective immediately, for evaluation and possible treatment for personal and spiritual difficulties af-

fecting his priesthood.”

Wiegert said there are no charges against Brodeski and the alleged conduct under investigation “has nothing whatsoever to do with Holy Cross, period.”

“The parish needed to understand why their pastor was going to be on leave,” Wiegert said. “He agreed to take a leave of absence. We do not know how long it is expected to take. We would hope sooner than later, but it’s not up to us. This is all we have to say at this point.”

Brodeski, 44, started at Holy Cross on Feb. 25, 2013, after serving as pastor of St. Mary Parish in Woodstock and St. Patrick Parish in Hartland for nearly five years, according to a diocesan report on priest assignments.

Brodeski was ordained in 1998, according to the diocese.

His first assignment was as parochial vicar at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Crystal Lake and religion teacher at Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock.

In 1999, he began to coor-

dinate Rock 2000, a summer event for youths and young adults centered on the Eucharist and the sacraments, according to the diocese.

Brodeski was made associate diocesan director of vocations and the spiritual adviser for the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry in 2000.

He also was pastor of St. Mary Parish in Byron, invested with the title of monsignor also in 2008, according to the diocese.

He became diocesan director of vocations from 2002 to 2008, and again from 2012, to Feb. 25, 2013, when he began as pastor of Holy Cross.

SUGAR GROVE – The Kindness Campaign was invited to co-host its first art contest at the recent Kaneland Fine Arts Festival. That resulted in students’ winning entries to become part of a permanent collection of the Changing Children’s Worlds Foundation, a Geneva-based charity.

“They partnered with us to do an art competition,” said Maria Dripps-Paulson, auditorium manager and executive director of the Kaneland Arts Initiative.” They wanted to have artwork created to portray these specific guidelines, [and] through the Kindness Campaign, they made that connection with us.”

The Kindness Campaign encourages and celebrates kindness in the Kaneland community. The Changing Children’s Worlds Foundation works with parents to improve the social-emotional learning and self-control for the full well-being of children of all families.

“We had these guidelines to work with. Some were simple, some were complex,” Dripps-Paulson said. “Like, ‘How do I show love?’ It encouraged families to do it together. Family units worked on them collaboratively.

These pieces will become part of a permanent art collection, so when somebody comes to their facility, they will see this ... this guideline displayed in an artistic fashion.”

The foundation’s executive director, Kimberly Svevo-Cianci, said organizers were pleased with the response to their partnership.

The foundation provided its eight guidelines for positive parent-child interaction and had nearly 60 entries from students, and students with parents, from first grade through high school, Svevo-Cianci said.

“I’m sure we will have many more submissions next year for our second annual event,” Svevo-Cianci said.

“Kaneland Festival Art Director Maria Dripps-Paulson was fantastic in making this happen, and we have interest from other communities now also.”

Winners of the 2014 Changing Children’s Worlds art contest were: • Best of Show: “The World of the Family” by Emma and Karly Mannia, John Stewart Elementary.

Where race ‘still matters’ THE WASHINGTON POST When Justice Sandra Day O’Connor gave affirmative action a 25-year reprieve, it seemed like more than enough time. Surely after another quarter-century of progress in racial relations, “the use of racial preferences,” as Justice O’Connor wrote, “will no longer be necessary.”

That was 11 years ago. Given the loathsome racism exposed in the past few days, it’s harder to be sanguine about that quarter-century. First it was Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, whose lawbreaking was being celebrated by Republican senators Rand Paul, Ky., and Dean Heller, Nev., until Mr. Bundy began extolling the virtues of slavery for African Americans.

Then came the taped remarks ostensibly of basketball team owner Donald Sterling chastising his girlfriend for associating with African Americans: “It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to?”

In a curious response, Mr. Sterling and his Los Angeles Clippers organization said they “do not know” if the tape is “legitimate” but that Mr. Sterling “feels terrible that such sentiments are being attributed to him.”

Sterling later confirmed that he was the person on the audiotapes and NBA commissioner Adam Silver said Sterling did not apologize for his remarks.

The Clippers owner was banned from the NBA for life and fined $2.5 million.

Whenever such ugly sentiments surface, many white Americans who like to think that the country has moved beyond rank racism profess astonishment. Many black Amer-

icans see in that astonishment proof of the obtuseness, willful or otherwise, that prevents whites from acknowledging the obstacles African Americans still face. Optimists in this case might note that Bundy (age 67) and Sterling (80) are of a generation that Justice O’Connor expected would be gone from the scene by her deadline.

Yet even optimists have to be dispirited by the revelation of such casually accepted racism.

Two data points don’t prove Justice O’Connor wrong, nor do they make a definitive case for or against affirmative action.

They do, however, take us back to the rationale for diversity that Justice O’Connor was defending in 2003. To consign Bundy-style ignorance to history, the country needs younger people of all races interacting, including in law schools (the subject of the 2003 case) and other educational venues.

As the justice wrote then, in Grutter v. Bollinger: “The Law School does not premise its need for critical mass on ‘any belief that minority students always (or even consistently) express some characteristic minority viewpoint on any issue.’

To the contrary, diminishing the force of such stereotypes is both a crucial part of the Law School’s mission, and one that it cannot accomplish with only token numbers of minority students. Just as growing up in a particular region or having particular professional experiences is likely to affect an individual’s views, so too is one’s own, unique experience of being a racial minority in a society, like our own, in which race unfortunately still matters.”

Only 14 years to go, and Justice O’Connor’s observation seems no less true.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR An unaffordable program To the Editor: The Batavia School Board is proposing adding Google Chromebooks for the middle and senior high students for its 21st Century Learning Plan.

The school board is also planning on adding elementary students to the program in the future.

Chromebooks have a separate operating system from Windows or Mac operating systems.

They are a specific type of laptop computer.

The school district will require parents to purchase the Chromebook computer for an additional fee, payable at registration. Why would any parent want to invest in another computer for their children, even at a discount?

The school board must not know that Google Chrome is a free download for any operating system. The cost for the Google Chromebooks, just this year, is almost a million dollars. The laptops will be obsolete after two years, so another million dollars will be required to re-

plenish the old laptops, just for Google Chromebooks.

Where is the school district getting the money, other than from the Batavia taxpayer? Is the school board planning on reducing spending from other programs or projects or eliminating staff positions from teachers to administrators to pay for Chromebooks?

The Batavia School Board appears to have been sold an unaffordable program by none other than Harold Hill from “The Music Man” musical. The district staff will present some of their recommendations in May. But until they figure out how to pay for the Google Chromebooks without adding to our already overtaxed property taxes, this entire project should go the way of the peddlers from “The Music Man,” on a train and out of town.

That is despite an objection by Kostelny’s attorney that one of the ballots could not be counted in the machine, she said.

marked as other ones, but it was clearly marked. It was put to the side,” Fechner said. “We decided – we all agreed by consensus – to put the ballot aside and close the results.”

At issue is a single ballot from the 12th precinct, in which a voter marked choic-

es with a check mark instead of filling in the oval, she said.

Fechner said it is known that ballot was counted on primary election day March 18 because the check-marked ballot was rejected by the optical scanning equipment during the recount, reducing the total by one.

“If we had continuously resent it, it would have gone through,” Fechner said. “It did count on Election Day. When we did the recount and did not put that ballot in, obviously we were short a ballot. We knew that, and we all

agreed the ballot should have counted.”

Neither Kostelny nor her attorney returned messages seeking comment.

Kostelny, a Kane County associate judge, lost to Geneva attorney Tegeler by seven votes, 6,220 to 6,213, for the Republican nomination to fill a vacancy to be left by Judge Karen Simpson, who plans to retire Oct. 6.

Associate judges are appointed. Circuit judges are elected.

Kostelny is seeking another discovery recount of 16

precincts at the Kane County Clerk’s office, scheduled to begin Monday and continue through May 7.

Tegeler attorney Ken Shepro said the check-marked ballot at issue in Aurora is a good ballot.

“The election code clearly says that with an optical scan system, a check mark is a valid mark and must be counted,” Shepro said. “In addition, it also says if the intent of the voter can be clearly ascertained, the ballot is counted – no matter what kind of mark is used.”

off East senior Haley Beno.

North’s first three runs came in the top of the third as Beal, Rabin and Mickey Goetz strung three straight singles together to open the inning, and Alex Millett and Abby Howlett added RBI sacrifice flies. That outburst was a relief for North, which stranded a runner at third base in each of the first two innings.

Despite playing on what Poulin described as a “slow

track” given the rain earlier Tuesday, North challenged East freshman catcher Rylee Stout extensively on the basepaths, experiencing widespread success until Rabin was called out at second on a steal try in the top of the fifth. The speedster was 21 for 21 on steals for the season – including one earlier in the game – until the controversial call, which drew an argument from Poulin.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North softball team saved its sharpest performance of the season for its marquee opponent.

North, playing “a complete game” for the first time this spring in coach Tom Poulin’s estimation, maintained its recent mastery of St. Charles East with a 5-1 road win Tuesday in Upstate Eight Conference River play.

“East is a great team,” North center fielder Andrea Beal said. “They say this is the year we’re going to beat North. We’ve just got to keep doing our own thing and pushing.”

North (12-6, 8-2 UEC River) was impressive on all fronts, particularly on defense, which has been an occasional sore spot for the North Stars. In the bottom of the sixth, North pitcher Sabrina Rabin snared Sarah Collalti’s rocket, comeback line drive, third baseman Erin Nemetz squeezed a liner from Olivia Cheatham and second baseman Kaitlyn Waslawski slickly handled a one-hop smash from Kate Peterburs, throwing her out at first.

East coach Kelly Horan thought the Saints mostly made solid contact, saying “What a day not to find the hole, huh?”

“These games are important to play but the only game that really matters if you find the holes or not is the third one,” Horan said, referencing a potential postseason meeting. “That’s what we’re aiming for. They’re aiming for the same thing, and that’s what we’re going to go for.”

The teams are scheduled to meet again May 20 at North in a late-season showdown that could determine the conference crown.

“It’s a big conference win – that’s what it boils down to,” Poulin said. “They’re the toughest opponent that we’ll see within our division even though there are other very good teams. So this is a big conference win. We still have to play them again, and we know that our best is needed to beat St. Charles East.”

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Geneva girls soccer coach Megan Owens didn’t sugarcoat her message to her team before its game Tuesday night against Batavia.

Owens laid it out to the Vikings that if they wanted a shot at winning the Upstate Eight Conference River crown, beating the Bulldogs was a must.

Playing without injured senior captains Annie Waldoch and Molly Stanfa, both out of the lineup with foot injuries, the Vikings surged to a rather convincing 2-1 victory over host Batavia to keep their conference title hopes alive.

Megan Fitz’s goal early in the second half stood up and the Vikings dodged one of the few Batavia scoring opportunities with less than a minute to play to set up a huge match between Geneva and St. Charles North tonight.

“She told us that this is basically conference, that this is your season and if you really want to win conference and be conference champs then you have to win this game,” Fitz said. “If we lost this game, that’s it, we wouldn’t be conference champs. We knew that we had to score another one, and we did.”

Fitz’s goal came just four minutes into the second half.

A stray ball found the junior’s feet and with a pair of Batavia defenders on either side, Fitz poked an off-balance shot past Bulldogs goalkeeper Jenny Scara. The goal came at the 36:11 mark of the second half and helped Geneva relax a bit after Batavia (6-7-1, 2-3 UEC River) played to a 1-1 halftime draw.

“We were on our heels a lot and lost our composure a bit but we got it back and the second half we came back fired up and ready to go and we scored,” Fitz said. “The ball was squirting around and I chipped it with my right foot and it just shot in. I think we did very well the second half versus the first half.”

Tori Renfus took Alison Grimm’s throw in from the right sideline and somehow got it past Geneva goalkeeper Sam Hauser to tie the game at 1.

“I liked the response to the goal in the first half, that was good,” Batavia coach Mark Gianfrancesco said. “I think

it was off a throw and kind of slipped in there and that was great – kind of a hustle goal.

I take all of those all day. We need to continue to connect on more passes and winning more balls out of the air. When we do that, we can play with these teams.”

Batavia did string together passes and win balls out of the air for a good portion of the

first half, but the Vikings came out inspired in the second half and dominated play.

The Vikings had three point-blank chances in the second half that Scara skillfully covered up to help Batavia stay within a goal.

Batavia’s last-ditch push came with less than 2 minutes to go. Hauser grabbed a bounding Batavia cross with 1:47 left before watching a Bulldogs shot get deflected just wide with 35 seconds to go.

“We played very well offensively, we created a lot of opportunities and kept pressing on them,” Owens said. “Our two captains were out and the girls responded. I thought we dominated the line of play.

In sloppy conditions we never stopped fighting, and I’m tremendously proud of them.

They all played solid across the board, and it showed.”

Geneva scored first as Taylor Williams banged a Maggie Bodine corner kick out of midair and past Scara to give Geneva a 1-0 lead at the 28:50 mark.

NOTEWORTHY Climbing Vikings stay ‘pretty humble’ Geneva coach Matt Hahn looks around the horn and realizes his team is short on senior experience. That hardly keeps him from surveying the Vikings with optimism.

Rebounding from two largely uncompetitive losses to open last week’s Upstate Eight River series with St. Charles North steeled Hahn’s confidence, as junior lefty Garrett Davis delivered a two-hitter in Thursday’s finale.

“That’s one of the things as coaches we constantly preach. ‘All right, we’re young. We’re going to make mistakes, you know,’ ” Hahn said. “The first two games of the series, we left a lot of guys on base and made a lot of errors. We left guys on base again [Thursday], but we obviously cut down on

the errors, and that was the difference in the game.

“So there’s going to be games … where we lose by the slaughter rule and then there’s games … where we look like we beat arguably one of the best teams in the conference. That happens when you’ve got young guys, but hopefully when these guys mature, we’re playing real good baseball.”

Hahn notes the team, which features four sophomores, is merely “young by age,” and should keep jelling as newcomers get better acclimated to the speed of varsity games.

“I think that we’re pretty humble. We’ve still got to go out there and we’ve got to earn the respect in the conference, and I think that we’re doing all right,” junior catcher Nathan Montgomery said. “We’re doing all right

this year.”

Anthony Holubecki earned his fourth victory and Nick Stahl his fourth save Monday.

One reason they have formed a formidable one-two punch for Kaneland is because Stahl did not become the Knights’ third starter.

Part of the rotation in his first three seasons in the program, Stahl shifted to the closer role behind a sharp offspeed repertoire that offers a much different look than Holubecki’s velocity-based approach.

“Nick’s just been thriving.

He’s just done awesome in this position,” Knights coach Brian Aversa said. “He wasn’t really anything but a starter until this season, and he’s been getting the job done.

Efficiently.”

Stahl entered Monday’s

game against visiting Yorkville with two on and no outs, and the Knights’ clinging to a 2-0 lead. He retired the final three batters as Kaneland improved to 4-0 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East.

Genke the gamer North coach Todd Genke missed the middle game of the Geneva series with what he believed to be food poisoning. Still a bit queasy, he returned to the team Thursday, although watching Davis deal didn’t exactly provide a salve.

“I couldn’t miss another game. That was the first game I’ve ever missed due to something like that,” Genke said. “I was happy that they played well [the day before].”

Sometimes fences get the worse end of the deal. That appeared to be the case Thursday when St. Charles North left ielder Nick Drawant bounced back up with a fantastic running catch against the wall to end the sixth inning against Geneva, which had the bases loaded. Drawant hustled back to the dugout, but the fence panel on North’s home ield sported a dent.

WHAT WE’LL LEARN IN THE WEEK AHEAD ...

Which team wins the annual “Battle of St. Charles.” East – which, like North is a contender in what should be a tight Upstate Eight River race – hosts two of the three games in the series. In 2013, East earned a share of the conference by defeating North in extra innings in a game resumed weeks later after initially being suspended by weather.

The Notre Damebound Shead, the St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week, caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley about her accomplishments. The following is an edited transcript: What went right for you to get the school record in the 200?

I think I’ve just been really focusing on getting out quicker from my blocks, and I think that definitely came together [Saturday] and made a big difference.”

Are you feeling livelier than

usual after getting the new 800 record, as well?

Actually, not really. I was getting over some sickness last week. … I didn’t really feel my best this week but I was just trying to fight though it and stay strong.

Does this outdoor season feel like it’s passed especially quickly?

Definitely. It’s just gone by so fast. ... I feel like once we get to outdoor season, it always just flies by.

What are your thoughts about running against [Aurora Central Catholic sophomore] Karina Liz in the 800 Friday [at the girls Kane County Meet]?

We’ll see how that goes. Definitely going to be a battle.

“He’s wearing an orange jacket against St. Charles East,” Maris said.

“It’s Illini,” answered the Illinois-bound Sterling. “It was College Day today, so I’ve got to rep it.”

Clad mostly in their other primary color, black, the Saints availed themselves well either way in a 4-3 victory against the two-time defending Upstate Eight Conference River Division champs.

“They’ve always been a strong team in conference the last two years, so it’s always a tense match for us,” Saints No. 1 singles standout Jasper Koenen said. “We always want to go out there and win.”

East (9-3, 3-1 UEC River) captured two of three singles matches and split at doubles, where Batavia has been especially effective of late.

The Bulldogs handed Suburban Christian Conference power Marmion a rare dual defeat Monday courtesy of a doubles sweep.

“We didn’t really think about that,” said the Saints’ Steven Waynick, who teamed with Nick Hauptmann for a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles to close the day. “We tried to take it just one match at a time, not really psych ourselves out before the match. We knew they were going to be better than some of the other guys we’ve faced and just kind of took that into consideration.”

Batavia (123, 1-1) earned doubles wins behind Maris and Sterling Jasper Koenen in the top slot and the No. 2 tandem of Josh Boyle and Jeff Lorden. East’s fourth tandem of Chris Horn and Stefan Cvarkovic also was victorious.

Those matches ended swiftly compared to those at No. 3 doubles and second singles, the only competitions to split the first two sets. As athletes briefly took water breaks outside the court, their coaches updated them on the stakes.

East captured three of the five matches that went straight sets. The Bulldogs needed to take both remaining matches to defend their home court, but only Drake Swift, a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 winner at

No. 2 singles, obliged.

East’s victory added further intrigue to the conference race, which includes unbeaten St. Charles North.

The North Stars defeated the host Saints, 4-3, earlier this month, and are set to visit the Bulldogs on May 8.

“We all know that we can all beat each other, so everybody, all three of us, have that target,” Maris said. “We want to beat them and them.

And they want to beat us and each other. So it’s kind of a three-way target, almost.”

No stranger to extra attention, Koenen, a Michigan State-bound senior, cruised, 6-0, 6-1, against Tim Murat.

Unbeaten this season and four wins shy of his 100th career victory – he could claim it next week against Geneva on his 18th birthday – Koenen maintains a steady approach.

He hasn’t been under duress much this spring, but has responded when in peril.

Trailing 2-4 and love-40 against Rolling Meadows sophomore Mack Galvin at the Mustangs’ Invitational in mid-April, he recovered for a 6-4, 6-1 win.

“Just keep rolling along each match and just keep doing what I’m doing,” Koenen said. “It’s working. Just each match, look at it the same, just go out there and compete.”

North fends off East

By THOMAS DELVES editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North boys volleyball team overcame a rowdy road atmosphere and rival St. Charles East on Tuesday, winning a tight Upstate Eight Conference River match, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20.

Jeff Rollins dished 27 assists and Nic Cook had 14 kills to help lead North (11-12, 2-0 UEC River) to victory.

The Saints opened strong on their home court led by senior RJ Yoder (nine kills) but unforced errors upset their rhythm and opened the door for North to take control. Rollins and Johnny Davern played big in the middle in Game 1 for North, which combined for 15 kills and only one hitting error.

Cook took control as the match progressed. He sparked the North Stars in the third game with a service ace and was responsible for five points in the set.

“It’s a big day, obviously it’s another game, another match, but in the heads of all the players in St. Charles, this rivalry is huge,” Cook said.

“This whole day just builds up to this and we fight hard for this.”

tough and first contact” was the mantra this week for St. Charles North coach Todd Weimer, and the North Stars were headed down that path, but East senior Luke Spicer, who ended the day with 18 kills and a .545 hitting percentage, helped rally the Saints with a blast through the middle to even the score at 4 in the decisive third game.

Even with Spicer’s strong performance, the North Stars’ defense and team play sealed the deal for North.

“We have been working that as of late,” Weimer said of the team’s block. “It makes everyone’s jobs a lot easier, we don’t have to pass, we don’t have to set, we don’t have to go hit. … Blocking is just critical.”

In East’s victorious Game 2, the Saints (2-2 UEC River) minimized their errors and keep momentum. That wasn’t the case in the other games.

“We just had a problem executing when we needed to,” East coach Kate McCullagh said. “We let them rattle off four, five points, and you can’t win matches if you let the opponent do that.”

Cook had 13 digs to go with his 14 kills.

Brendan Donlevy added 14 digs and eight kills for North while Ben Connor had 14 assists.

Kane County edges Kernels KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Leadoff hitter Jake Hannemann finished a home run short of the cycle Tuesday, helping the Cougars edge Cedar Rapids, 2-1, before a crowd of 607 at Perfect Game Field.

Catcher Will Remillard also had three hits for the Cougars (18-7), with outfielders Hannemann and Yasiel Balaguert driving in the club’s runs.

Winner Nathan Dorris, a Midwest League All-Star last season, improved to 3-1 with two innings of two-hit relief.

GENEVA – Geneva’s Grace Ginsberg shined Tuesday in the team’s final tuneup before Friday’s Kane County girls track and field meet as the Vikings defeated Batavia, 103-39.

The junior took titles in the 100-meter hurdles (17.34) and 300 hurdles (50.9) while also winning the triple jump with an effort of 32 feet, 3 inches.

“She’s been our top hurdler pretty much all season, but actually she’s been a little bit dinged up so we’re trying to keep her sharp for these big meets,” Vikings coach Peter Raak said.

A gymnast during the winter, Ginsberg has taken quickly to triple jump.

“Triple jump is a lot of strength in your legs, so the fact she has a lot of gym strength, that helps out so much,” Raak said. “Core strength in general really helps, and she’s got that, for sure.”

Batavia’s Samantha Healy won the shot put, throwing 304½.

Carlson picks Aurora for baseball, basketball Just baseball.

The combinations through which Kaneland senior Ty Carlson could continue his athletic career in college were dizzying, but Carlson ended up going with door No. 2 – baseball and basketball – at Aurora University, where he committed Sunday.

Carlson entered his senior year thinking he’d likely go the college baseball route exclusively, but a dynamite senior basketball season for the Knights – including a 38-point outburst in a sectional semifinal loss to Rockford Lutheran – warmed Carlson to the notion of becoming a two-sport athlete in college.

“Especially the Rockford Lutheran game, which was pretty crazy,” Carlson said.

“It was an awesome experience. I didn’t really want to quit playing [basketball]. At Aurora, I got the opportunity to play the sports I love for four more years, so I was really excited for the opportunity.”

Carlson said he wasn’t satisfied with his junior season in basketball, and he put in extra work over the summer to regain his footing.

“I just really thought I could play better than I did my junior year, and I proved to myself I could play at a high level on varsity,” said Carlson, a third baseman/ outfielder in baseball.

At Aurora, Carlson intends to room with his best friend and Kaneland classmate Tom Van Bogaert.

Van Bogaert won’t compete athletically at Ty Carlson Aurora, but Carlson expects to join forces with fellow Kaneland products Chaon Denlinger (basketball) and Corey Landers (baseball), both of whom will be seniors for the Division-III Spartans next year.

Carlson said Central College in Pella, Iowa, was interested in him for football and basketball. That was especially intriguing because Center’s football team was scoping out Carlson as a quarterback, a position he rarely played at Kaneland because he was behind talented classmate Drew David. Carlson primarily contributed as a linebacker for the Knights’ football team.

Carlson said he gave the

The Elburn resident also viewed Aurora’s proximity as an enticing factor.

“Me and my siblings are very close,” Carlson said.

“Same with my parents, and my grandparents actually come to a lot of my games, too. They live in Batavia and Geneva. So that’ll be a plus, too.”

Hawks ready for next team, some rest

By MARK LAZERUS There’s nothing quite like a Game 7 – the intensity, the pressure, the excitement, the drama.

But there is something even better: Not having to play a Game 7.

While the Colorado Avalanche and Minnesota Wild fight to the finish tonight in Denver, the Blackhawks – who await the winner – will be watching from the comfort of their own homes, coming off two days away from the rink and a welcome-back practice earlier in the day.

Those two days off couldn’t have come at a better time, given the physically and mentally draining nature of the Hawks’ six-game, first-round victory

over the St. Louis Blues.

“It’s really good to get some rest,” goaltender Corey Crawford said. “It’s always nice to get a little in the playoffs. But I’m sure we’re going to be eager to start the next one.”

Of course, none of the Hawks would bite when asked which team he’d rather see in the Central Division final. In their eyes, it’s not about who the opponent is, but how the Hawks themselves play that will determine the winner. That said, deep down, the Hawks probably wouldn’t mind seeing the Wild prevail.

Not that Minnesota is a pushover. The Wild have been impressive in pushing the division-champion Avalanche to a Game 7, boast the best possession numbers of any team in the playoffs, and are a deeper team

Both players were steadying influences in the backcourt for a Geneva squad that advanced to an IHSA Class 4A sectional championship game. Cook is a point guard, while Parrilli is a hard-nosed

shooting guard and a strong defender.

Batavia’s Thayer makes volleyball commitment: Batavia girls volleyball senior Shea Thayer has decided on Notre Dame College (Ohio), according to Bulldogs coach Lori Trippi-Payne. Thayer, recruited as a middle hitter, had the second most blocks (81) in a season in school history last year.

Notre Dame College is a D-II program located in South Euclid, Ohio.

‘For No Good Reason’: The wild art of a mild man

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post Johnny Depp’s appearance throughout a new documentary portrait of the British artist and illustrator Ralph Steadman is unnecessary, though appropriate given the film’s title, “For No Good Reason.”

Depp’s presence on camera – less as legitimate interviewer than as a slightly sycophantic observer – seems calculated to lend hipster cachet to the biography, but little else.

Steadman, however, seems to be doing just fine on his own. Well into his 70s, the artist best known for his magazine collaborations in the 1970s with the late writer Hunter S. Thompson is still making art that has the capacity to delight and, at times, to shock. It’s fun to watch Steadman create his signature style of ink drawings: unflattering caricatures characterized by seemingly random splashes of black and red ink – sometimes blown through a straw – that give the work a violent, unpredictable energy. Occasional animations supplement these scenes of the artist at work.

The rest of the film, by Charlie Paul, features Steadman reminiscing about his career, which took off with a 1970 assignment to cover the Kentucky Derby

for Scanlan’s magazine.

Thompson, the writer on that project, would go on to work with Steadman again and again, most notably for Rolling Stone magazine, where the two collaborated on the serialized article “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” (1971), among several other pieces.

Depp famously played Thompson’s alter ego, Raoul Duke, in Terry Gilliam’s 1998 film adaptation of “Las Vegas,” which I guess explains his presence.

Gilliam also appears briefly in the documentary, as does the actor Richard E. Grant, whose breakout role was in the 1987 film “Withnail and I,” for which Steadman created the poster art.

Like Depp’s contribution, which lends the film the feeling of a random tea-time visit, these talking-head appearances are a mite extraneous. “For No Good Reason” rambles too much for its own good, compared to more traditional documentaries.

The most rewarding parts of the film feature Steadman simply talking about his influences (Picasso, among others) and his youthful goal of changing the world through art.

Though Steadman created many anti-war images in his day, he admits that, at his advanced age, he sometimes

feels “slightly meaningless.”

Those who only know Steadman through his art, which sometimes resembles the output of a wild man, might be surprised to learn that he’s always been a pretty staid guy. Given his long association with Thompson, a celebrated drinker and drug user who committed suicide in 2005, the revelation of Steadman’s (relative) sobriety is the film’s biggest bombshell. Steadman says that he and Thompson were as different as “chalk and cheese.”

Rolling Stone co-founder and publisher Jann Wenner, however, says that, of the two men, Steadman was far crazier than Thompson and more willing to take a chance. You certainly don’t see that trait in his personal life, which seems quietly predictable these days.

But that risk-taking comes across in his art.

Fortunately, there’s plenty of it in “For No Good Reason.” It may not have changed the world, but for fans of Steadman’s work, it’s reason enough to see the film.

• “For No Good Reason” received three out of four stars. The film is rated R and contains crude language, drug content and sexual imagery. It runs 89 minutes.

Testosterone therapy carries risks as well as benefits Dear Doctor K: I’ve seen a lot of commercials advertising testosterone therapy for “low T.” Does it live up to its promise? Should I be on it?

Dear Reader: I’ve seen the commercials, too. They promise that testosterone therapy for low blood levels of testosterone, or “low T,” will make you feel more alert, energetic, mentally sharp and sexually functional. Testosterone therapy is a good option for some men, but there are also risks.

Testosterone is the major sex hormone in men. Low T can cause low sex drive, low energy, erectile dysfunction and decreased muscle mass. However, other conditions besides low T can also cause each of these symptoms. As men move into their mid-adult years, blood levels of testosterone tend to fall.

But this is variable from one man to the next.

In answering your questions, what I want to avoid saying (and you want to avoid reading) is that “it’s complicated.” But sometimes the answer is just plain complicated – because medical science doesn’t have clear answers.

The first question that sounds like it should be simple to answer, but isn’t, is what blood level of testosterone is truly “low.” The first complication is that doctors measure two different types of

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff testosterone: total and free testosterone. It is free testosterone that actually affects things such as sex drive, energy, erectile function and muscle mass.

Some men have normal total testosterone but low free testosterone, and vice versa. To make matters worse, measuring free testosterone blood levels accurately is difficult. Not all laboratories do it well.

When men have very low total and free testosterone, and resulting symptoms, there’s no doubt that testosterone treatments can raise blood levels and improve symptoms. But many men have testosterone levels that are a little bit low, and it’s not so clear that they benefit from treatment.

Testosterone therapy can be delivered through a gel, patch or injection. Most doctors prescribe a gel.

Like most treatments, testosterone therapy carries some potential risks, such as stimulating the growth of prostate cancer and possibly increasing the risk of heart disease.

Here’s what I advise: • Consider other causes for your symptoms. Depression, cardiovascular disease and medications can cause erectile dysfunction. Poor sleep could explain low energy. Aging combined with lack of strength exercises leads to reduced muscle mass.

• Get an accurate assessment.

Dear Mary: A “mixed” religion marriage can be successful if both partners understand that an extra burden is added.

In yesterday’s column, we looked at a deal in which the responder made a strong jump shift, then, on the second round, jumped again in his suit to announce that it was completely solid.

In today’s deal, the responder jumps in his own suit, then jumps in his partner’s suit.

What does that show?

While you are thinking about that, some pairs add a third hand-type for a strong jump shift: a strong 5-3-3-2. I do not like that, because when responder rebids in no-trump, opener does not know the length of responder’s suit. In my two-way style, responder must have a six-card suit if he jumps in it, then rebids in no-trump.

This allows the opener to count winners more accurately.

North’s sequence here shows, in principle, five decent spades, four good hearts and 5-42-2 distribution, with (almost) all of his points in the majors.

His hand is a textbook example.

Then South wonders if a grand slam might be makable, but decides to settle for “a sure thing.”

West leads the diamond king. Declarer thinks that he can see 12 winners (five spades, five hearts, one diamond and one club), with the club finesse for the overtrick. So South takes the first trick with his diamond ace and draws trumps.

Then he turns to the spades, but suddenly five tricks there shrink to four. Now he has no sensible choice but to take the club finesse. Finally something works.

Note that East did well to keep equal length with the dummy, never discarding a spade while declarer drew trumps.

Library director remembers maintenance supervisor as someone who ‘just can’t be replaced’ KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – Workers at the Town and Country Public Library in Elburn paused last week, as the library closed for several hours April 23, so employees could attend funeral services for a longtime friend, Wayne Jensen.

Jensen died April 18 at age 74. He worked as the library’s building maintenance supervisor for 12 years, and Mary Lynn Alms, the library’s director, said what Jensen did “was a lot more than any job description could cover.”

“He was one of those people who did not just hold a job,” she wrote in an email.

“He made the job his vocation and his mission. We hear many compliments on how nice the building and grounds are, and that is entirely due to him.”

She said Jensen supervised the cleaning staff, arranged for inspections and contracted work, ordered supplies, did repairs and kept the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems in working order.

“He took care of problems before we even knew they were happening,” she wrote.

“He also took care of the staff … made sure our offices were warm on winter mornings, had coffee ready by the time the rest of us arrived, helped if we had car trouble, etc. He came early and stayed late and

National Honor Society Kaneland High School students have been inducted into the National Honor Society.

379 fifth grade students from four Kaneland elementary schools had a chance to visit Kaneland Harter Middle School during the week of April 14. The school visit kicks off an important transition from grade 5 to grade 6. Students had an opportunity to learn about the expectations at the middle school for academic rigor and positive behavior. These tours were led by middle school students who created a script to highlight the areas of the middle school including core classrooms, exploratory classrooms, the library, gym, and the lunchroom. Students were also treated to performances from the s 5th Grade Tour sixth grade band and chorus students. In addition to the tours, fifth her Panel Student & Teac grade students also participated in a question and answer panel led Middle School Kaneland Harter by several teachers and students. These students and teachers took a lot of pride in participating in the student panel offering advice about organization, extra-curricular opportunities, making friends, and how to open a locker.

The purpose of the transition program is for fifth grade students to the middle school to set expectations and reduce anxiety. Fifth grade students took a brief survey to share their experiences from the school visit and 93% of the students reported they were more comfortable becoming a middle school student then when they arrived that morning. Fifth grade students also reported they enjoyed trying a band instrument and eating a hot lunch.
