Poblano closed during lease transfer

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Poblano Pepper Grill restaurant will remain closed during ongoing negotiations to reassign the lease, a leasing representative for the property said Wednesday.

Angela Gasbarro of MidAmerica Asset Management, Inc., said she is working with a nephew of current owner Ruben Alonso to see if he will take over the lease. She said the nephew already owns a Mexican restaurant outside of St. Charles.

“If we can’t agree to a deal, it will remain closed,” Gasbarro said of the restaurant at 3677 E. Main St. Gasbarro did not know when exactly the restaurant closed.

The Kane County Health Department placed a notice sticker on Poblano’s front door in March after several attempts to reach its food service permit holder, said Tom Schlueter, the department’s health communications coordinator.

The notice is routine for any restaurant that closes, Schlueter said. The notice informs the next tenant of the space that a permit is required if the business will involve handling food.

The restaurant’s phone number is picked up by an automated message that says the

number has been temporarily disconnected.

Neither the restaurant’s website, www.poblanopeppergrill.com, nor its Facebook page make any reference to the restaurant’s closure. The restaurant’s tables and chairs on Wednesday were unstacked and appeared from the outside of the business to be in their

regular floor plan arrangement.

Poblano Pepper Grill opened in February 2012 in the Main Street Commons shopping center on the city’s east side. The restaurant’s menu included authentic Mexican food, and Alonso’s family helped operate the business, according to its website.

Tuition is $175. Participants should expect to remain at the audition clinic for the full three hours. All participants will be taught a song and dance and be asked to read passages from the script.

No advanced preparation is required. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and bring a water bottle.

Public update on downtown St. Charles set

The Downtown St. Charles Partnership will host its City Update program at 5 p.m.

April 10 in the St. Charles City Council Chambers, 2 E. Main St., St. Charles. The program is open to the public, but the partnership strongly encourages attendees to RSVP through its office by calling 630-443-3962.

City staff will give presentations for about an hour focused on current opportunities and challenges facing the downtown district, as well as programs and services available to business and property owners. The event will conclude with a moderated question-and-answer session, according to a news release.

8LOCAL BRIEFS Registration open for U of I Extension’s series ST. CHARLES – Registration is now open for the spring series of University of Illinois Extension’s Four Seasons Gardening program.

There are three spring classes, covering a wide variety of areas: from trending topics such as herb growing and bargain gardening, to timely tips on pest control.

All are taught by University of Illinois Extension experts and will be presented via state-wide teleconference at the Kane County office, 535 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

• From 1:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jim Schmidt will present “The Basics of Growing Herbs.” This session will look at various common herbs and their characteristics. It also will focus on how to grow, when to harvest and potential savory uses.

• “Pest Control Strategies in the Garden” will be led by David Robson from 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 24. This program will help the home gardener decide the best options for managing those pests while protecting the environment.

• From 1:30 to 3 p.m. May 6, “Bargain Gardening” will be led

by Rhonda Ferree. Participants will find out how gardens can be simple and fun, while learning gardening tips and ideas

that will save time and money.

There is a fee of $10 to attend each session.

60 Men Who Cook benefit set for April 11 ST. CHARLES – Sixty local celebrities will demonstrate their cooking skills when the Geneva Chamber of Commerce presents the 60 Men Who Cook.

This is the sixth year for the event that benefits Geneva History Center, Geneva Lions Club and Rotary Club of Geneva.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. April 11 at the Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

Former Petland employee plans protest against store

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Former Petland employee Samantha Clark said she hopes to raise awareness of concerns that she has about the company’s practices by staging a protest near the store later this month.

Clark, who worked at the Petland store at 401 N. Randall Road in Batavia from October 2009 to February 2010, will have the protest from noon to 2 p.m. April 19 at the corner of Randall Road and Mill Street, near the store. She said the company sells dogs that come from puppy mills.

“The protest is initially just to start spreading the awareness,” said Clark, a 2008 graduate of Batavia High

School. “I’m working on getting some kind of ordinance passed in Kane County similar to the one that was passed in Chicago that only allows pet stores to sell animals from rescue shelters and places like that.”

Janet Star, who has owned the Petland store in Batavia with her husband, Dan, for seven years said the store doesn’t sell dogs from puppy mills.

“We get our puppies from USDA-licensed breeders with no direct violations,” she said. “Some of the puppies come from hobby breeders.

I’m very picky about the breeders I get our dogs from.

I visit with the breeders and see how they care for their animals.”

Clark said she left her

job at Petland because she “didn’t agree with the company’s morals or their values, and how they conducted business.”

“These puppies come in with kennel cough. They come in with diseases. They come in with all these problems because they weren’t bred in humane conditions,” Clark said.

“Any reputable breeder won’t sell to a pet store because they want to know that their dogs are going to good homes.”

Janet Star said the store is “very open about where we get our dogs from.”

“Petland’s mission is to match the right pet with the right customer, and meet the needs of both,” she said. “People come to our store because they know we train our staff well.”

Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, has announced the start of the first Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academic Competition, the “House Student App Challenge,” also known as the “House App Contest,” for high school students from the 14th District.

The competition is designed to encourage their participation in STEM education fields, allowing students to compete by creating and exhibiting their software application, or “app,” for mobile, tablet or computer devices on a platform of their choice.

Students entering the competition must submit their app’s source code online through 10:59 p.m. April 30, as well as provide a YouTube or VIMEO video demo explaining their app and what they learned through this competition process.

Lazarus House to take part in challenge ST. CHARLES – Lazarus House, a St. Charles-based charitable organization, is participating in the million-dollar Feinstein Challenge during March and April.

The amount Lazarus House will earn from the challenge depends on the amount it raises from donors. All financial donations received by Lazarus House during March and April and labeled with “Feinstein Challenge” will be totaled and reported to the Feinstein Foundation.

Kane County Board will consider 5 percent raises

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County Board should decide next week if nine directors will receive 5 percent raises.

The Executive Committee on Wednesday moved the proposed increases for these employees to the April 8 agenda: Brad Sauer, director of emergency communications; Mark VanKerkhoff, director of development and community services; Scott Berger, director of community reinvestment; and Roger Fahnestock, chief information officer.

Salary adjustments for five other directors – Barb

Jeffers, public health; Donald Bryant, emergency management; Mark Armstrong, assessments; Sheila McCraven, human resources; and Joe Onzick, finance – were held over from the March County Board meeting.

Various committees have discussed the salary adjustments, but this will be the first time the full County Board will consider the proposals.

Board members Barb Wojnicki, R-Campton Hills, and Melisa Taylor, R-Sugar Grove, have said they intend to vote against the raises.

Doug Scheflow, R-Elgin, has opposed the proposals in committee.

Board Chairman Chris Lauzen began introducing the proposed raises in February.

He has said the salary adjustments will help better align the their compensation with their counterparts in other nearby counties.

According to information provided by Lauzen, the increases themselves will cost almost $50,000.

The total cost, however, is closer to $60,000 when including FICA and Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund costs.

Lauzen has said the raises will not cost taxpayers extra money because of savings elsewhere.

Park district offers home visits by Easter Bunny ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Park District is offering home visits by the Easter Bunny on April 12 between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. or 2:30 and 4 p.m. It is for ages 1 to 7.

The fee is $20 for residents and $30 for nonresidents for the first registered child.

For additional children in the same household, the fee is $5 for residents and $7.50 for nonresidents.

Schmidt’s neurologist, Andrew Ta, had testified he was OK with Schmidt driving and that he knew she was driving to see him during scheduled appointments.

But prosecutors’ last witness, Neil Allen, a doctor and expert in neurology, testified that Schmidt likely suffered a seizure just before the crash occurred.

Allen reviewed Schmidt’s medical records with two different doctors and noticed she was taking an anti-depressant at the same time she was taking medication to treat epilepsy, which could cause drowsiness,

he said.

Schmidt, who is also diabetic, also had a history of having low blood sugar.

“If someone has poorly controlled blood sugar, it can go way high, which can make someone sleepy, drowsy or confused, or way down, causing someone to be drowsy, sleepy and confused,” Allen said. “When it’s down, it can increase the risk of seizures.”

Schmidt had told police her memory of the crash was fuzzy.

She told authorities during a videotaped interview that she remembered driving on Whipple Road toward Route 23 while listening to the radio, and the next thing she knew, her car was in a ditch with the airbag

deployed.

DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney Phil Montgomery said that even though Schmidt’s neurologist was OK with her driving, Schmidt should have known not to drive and should have filed a notice with the Secretary of State forbidding her to drive.

Schmidt told her neurologist the day after the crash that she felt “strange” the morning of the crash, the same word she used to describe a seizure she had Nov. 3, 2009, Montgomery said.

“If this had been the first seizure she ever had, I would understand the [defense’s] argument, but she has a history of seizures,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery said Schmidt having a seizure just before the crash is not a valid defense.

“She had a condition which she knew would cause her to lose consciousness,” he said.

The case is scheduled to continue at 10 a.m. today.

SYCAMORE – DeKalb County Presiding Judge Robbin Stuckert will decide this morning whether to toss the charges against a 49-year-old Sycamore woman accused of reckless homicide in a crash that killed a local couple.

As is routine in criminal trials, defense attorney Gregg Smith is arguing that prosecutors failed to prove their case against Patricia Schmidt. Prosecutors called their final witness Wednesday in the bench trial that has spanned more than three months; if Stuckert denies Smith’s request, Schmidt’s trial is expected to continue today.

“The evidence the state presented has not proven Schmidt guilty beyond a reasonable doubt on all pending counts,” Smith said.

Schmidt is accused of reckless homicide and aggravated reckless driving. If convicted of the more serious charge, reckless homicide, she would face probation or up to five years in prison.

Authorities said she was driving more than 70 mph Feb. 21, 2011, at the intersection of Route 23 and Peace Road in Sycamore when she ran a red light and her pickup truck collided with a white Pontiac Grand Am. The crash killed Tim Getzelman, 21, a Sycamore High School graduate, and his girlfriend, Alexis Weber, 21, a Kaneland High School graduate.

Smith said Schmidt should be acquitted because she did not consciously act in willful disregard for public safety. He cited multiple cases in which people were convicted of reckless homicide after they were told by doctors not to drive.

Kirk said the center has about 300 animals at the center at any given time. The center’s website states that it receives “an influx of babies” each spring.

Kirk said most animals are allowed at the center, but they cannot accept bats, skunks and adult deer. She added that the center prefers to be contacted before people bring in animals.

“We always suggest people call us first,” she said. “A lot of times, people think animals are orphaned, and they are not.”

Randall, Kirk roads targeted for upgrades

asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County’s plans to make a stretch of Randall Road and a spot on Kirk Road safer should be one step closer to fruition next week.

As part of its consent agenda Tuesday, the Kane County Board is expected to approve items related to improvements on Randall Road between Fabyan Parkway and Silver Glen Road and on Kirk Road at the Illinois Prairie Path in Geneva.

Steve Coffinbargar, assistant director of transportation, said the county anticipates to go out to bid this summer for the Kirk Road enhancements, which include pedestrian crossing warning lights.

gram funds (56 percent) and the county (44 percent), according to county documents.

“We hope to get this project constructed this year,” Coffinbargar said, noting nothing is guaranteed.

The Randall Road project will affect 16 intersections from the Geneva-Batavia border to the St. Charles Township-South Elgin border. Documents indicate the planned enhancements include rumble stripes and strips; pavement marking and painting improvements; signs that show drivers their speed; and

flashing yellow left-turn arrows.

With such a traffic signal, motorists would have the right of way with a solid green arrow but would have to yield before turning left when flashing yellow. A steady yellow arrow would retain its meaning that motorists should prepare to stop.

The Transportation Committee last month discussed the need to educate motorists about the new turn arrows.

Coffinbargar said a public involvement process is being finalized.

He said the project should also go out to bid this year.

The total cost is estimated at about $1.7 million, but 90 percent will be funded by Highway Safety Improvement Program money.

Coffinbargar described it as using a small local fund source to leverage a lot more in improvements.

OPINIONS Techno-holics anonymous I once had a teacher tell me that someone becomes “addicted” to their smart device when they begin to worry about finding a place to charge it. In that case, the cellular phone demons residing in my pocket have most presumably taken over the major control centers of my brain.

My name is Kurt Zepeda, and I’m a techno-holic, along with a great chunk of the current American population.

It all started with a simple flip phone at the end of eighth grade. Besides thinking that I had suddenly acquired the key to the gates of the popular with a single opening of the screen, I also developed an infatuation with the classic 8-bit Snake. Slowly, the phone worked its evil magic and lured me closer into tech oblivion. Since then, phones have evolved. One can now equip himself with a number of new gadgets and applications to avoid as much human contact as possible. For example, fascinating technological advancements have allowed people to take selfies with cats while also messaging/tweeting/hash-tagging to kingdom come about the new cat-selfie craze.

Who needs company when they have an irate feline adorned with claws on a rampage due to a startling series of camera flashes?

Yes, I do admit that a multitude of my peers could barely survive three days without turning on their phone and crushing some circular candies. On a rather similar note, I must also divulge that this “addiction” causes human-to-human interactions among my age group to decrease quite a lot.

However, as a functioning teenage male of arguably typical intelligence, my ability to justify certain habits knows no bounds.

In the instance of an awkward public event filled with strangers, one can remove the phone from his or her pocket, leave it off and simply tap away in order to convey the idea of a social life.

As a precaution for emergencies, many of my friends keep their phones on themselves at all times. Say I’m driving along one of the many hazardous and menacing streets of Geneva, and my car veers off into a tree. Instead of immediately calling the competent authorities, I can first post about my life troubles with an unwarranted amount of emoticons, and then seek medical attention for any fractured bones or internal hemorrhaging.

Perhaps, some of the worst effects of cellphone “addiction” have yet to reveal themselves, and, perhaps, this affliction doesn’t even exist. But, I’d still recommend a bit of moderation. Phones should enhance humanity’s capability to get together and connect – not simply continue to propagate the plague of uselessness amassing on servers everywhere. In the end, I think the Internet would appreciate a small break from all the megapixels of cat selfies.

Talking about Obamacare enrollment BLOOMBERG NEWS Now that the rush of Affordable Care Act enrollment has passed, the challenge is to identify and respond to at least three kinds of concerns.

The first involves relatively narrow problems with the law itself. For example, many state-run exchanges are poorly run; states such as Maryland and Massachusetts need help to fix them in time for the next open enrollment period, which starts in November. The law’s programs to cushion insurers from excess risk may also need reinforcement – if not enough young people sign up for insurance – to lessen any shocks to premiums next year.

That leads to the second kind of problem – with the health care system generally.

This includes persuading still more young people to sign up next time; getting more doctors and hospitals to coordinate care, making good on the promise to make medicine more affordable; and smoothing the transition from employer-based coverage for people who lose it.

None of this occurs in a political vacuum, of course, and this is the last and most expansive challenge. If the Affordable Care Act could be said to have a single purpose, it would be to extend health care insurance to people who cannot afford it. That said, it

has proved difficult to expand coverage to poor people in states that reject the law. Some states may well follow New Hampshire’s lead, reversing their initial opposition to the expansion of Medicaid.

But if the federal government’s current strategy of exemptions and semantic dodges proves unequal to the task of gaining Obamacare purchase in states such as Texas or North Carolina, its architects will need to look for an alternative. Spending $1.3 trillion in health care subsidies for the middle class while leaving many poorer Americans with no options threatens the moral basis for the whole undertaking.

MORRIS – Larger, faster and more efficient: That’s what the Elburn Cooperative terminal hopes to be after it makes $10 million in capital improvements to its Morris facility.

The co-op already has built a larger storage bin, grain scale, main office, motor control center and parking lot as part of the expansion project.

The Elburn Cooperative also has locations in Elburn and Maple Park.

Elburn terminal manager Jeff Neisler said the company is set to begin in June construction on two additional storage bins and faster shipping apparatuses, with hopes of having the entire project completed by harvest time in October.

The improvements will add about 340,000 bushels worth of storage and allow the terminal to load grain at a faster rate.

“We’re excited about investing in Morris. We’re adding storage and capabilities that will better serve those local customers,” Elburn Cooperative President and CEO John Husk said. “The city has been very receptive to what we’re trying to do.”

The Morris terminal is currently Elburn Cooperative’s only export location.

All of the grain collected at Elburn’s many storage bins throughout the area is funneled through the Morris location before it is shipped to the Gulf of Mexico.

The Morris location exports roughly 120,000 bushels of corn per day via barges on the Illinois River and semitrailers.

Neisler said ever-rising

export numbers were a major factor when the cooperative decided to expand.

From 2008 to 2014, the number of U.S. soybean exports has increased by about 400 million according to United States Department of Agriculture data.

“We saw the export demand picking up substantially, especially in the last year or year and a half,” Neisler said.

About 90 percent of Elburn’s exports are transported through waterways, Neisler said. When the railroad companies diverted more rail transportation to hauling hydraulic fracturing sand and oil, Elburn Cooperative and other export companies using barges saw an increase in business, Neisler said.

That increase was another contributing factor in the terminal’s expansion.

“We’re getting more of the export business now because of rail logistics,” Neisler said. “That’s another factor we are looking at.”

Last year’s record flooding of the Illinois River also propelled the project along as the terminal’s previous office was almost submerged.

The new office was finished just this year and was built farther away from the river at more than 500 feet above sea level.

The terminal’s improvements will make the exporting and marketing process quicker for local farmers, Neisler said.

“We want the export market to be more accessible to local farmers,” he said. “This will speed up the whole process. [Farmers] can get their grain to market quicker and possibly move more grain than before.”

Replenishing that supply is going to be difficult as companies wrestle with when to perform seasonal maintenance and a lack of availability of rail cars, said Julie Ward, an assistant vice president at R.J. O’Brien & Associates, a brokerage in Des Moines, Iowa.

“Until they can get this logistics situation turned around,” ethanol prices are going to remain strong, she said. “It’s just a double whammy.”

Demand for gasoline will average 8.79 million barrels a day in 2014, up from 8.77 million in 2013, the Energy Information Administration, the statistical arm of the U.S. Energy Department, said in its Short Term Energy Outlook on March 11.

Supplies fell as refiners reduced capacity during seasonal repairs and sold off winter-grade fuel to make way for summer gasoline, which is costlier to blend.

“It’s the rapid turnover in inventories that has surprised people,” said Harry Tchilinguirian, head of commodity markets strategy at BNP Paribas SA in London.

“Inventories are now at the bottom of the range on the five-year average for this particular time of year.”

Gasoline stocks typically begin their seasonal rise after refiners complete maintenance.

Production rises to meet summer demand and to winnow down crude inventories, which rose to a 16- week high in the seven days ended March 21.

“Inventories should start

building once we head into April,” said Andrew Lebow, a senior vice president at Jefferies Bache LLC in New York. “We’re looking for output to be 150,000 barrels a day higher.”

The pace of this year’s increases slowed to 3 cents during the past two weeks from 6 cents the prior two weeks, he said.

Retail gasoline prices in 2013 peaked at $3.786 on Feb. 26.

The average U.S. pump price on March 31 at $3.561 was this year’s high and 7.6 cents lower than a year earlier.

“We’re not necessarily going to achieve the same peak this year,” Tchilinguirian said.

HOUSTON – U.S. consumers are paying the most in six months for gasoline because of declining supplies and rising costs for the ethanol added to the fuel. Prices probably will keep climbing, the largest U.S. motoring group said.

Gasoline, averaging $3.561 a gallon at the pump, already costs the most since September, according to AAA. Prices for ethanol, the fuel additive mandated by the government, are the highest in more than seven years after freezing weather and a shortage of rail cars slowed distribution and reduced inventories.

Supplies of gasoline were the least since November in the week ending March 28 and demand was 2.2 percent above a year ago during a period of seasonal refinery repairs, according to the Energy Information Administration.

Prices for ethanol derived from corn and blended with gasoline at a ratio of at least 10 percent, may extend gains as distillers take plants offline for routine spring maintenance before the summer driving season.

“We expect that the peak for gasoline prices will be in April with the most likely outcome about $3.65,” said Michael Green, a spokesman for AAA in Washington. “It could go to $3.75 if refineries have problems coming out of spring maintenance.”

Gasoline futures advanced 4.5 percent in the first quarter to $2.911 a gallon on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The contract for May delivery fell 0.1 percent to settle at $2.8668, the fourth consecutive decline and lowest level since Feb. 28.

Ethanol climbed a record 81 percent in the quarter, surpassing the 65 percent gain during the third quarter of 2005 when the biofu-

el replaced methyl tertiary butyl ether as the primary source of octane for gasoline refiners.

Denatured ethanol for April delivery touched $3.578 a gallon Tuesday on the Chicago Board of Trade, the highest intraday price since July 2006.

Ethanol ’s premium to May gasoline reached 64.7 cents on April 1.

The additive has averaged a 17.39-cent discount to the motor fuel since 2005.

Prices at the pump have been rising even as gasoline futures have retreated 5.1 percent from a year-to-date peak on March 3.

Congestion on the nation’s rail lines delayed shipments from the Midwest, where 89 percent of ethanol plants are located, to terminals in the Northeast where it’s blended with gasoline before delivery to filling stations.

East Coast ethanol stockpiles in the week ending March 28 were down 19 percent from a year ago.

In New York, the biofuel cost $1.56 more than the gasoline it got mixed with Tuesday, up from a discount of 34.63 cents on Jan. 2.

Drivers in the Northeast are already paying as much as 11 cents a gallon extra after ethanol in New York jumped $1.10 in March, according to data from Bloomberg.

The average gallon of regular gasoline nationwide has risen 29.2 cents from its year low of $3.269 on Feb. 6, according to Heathrow, Fla.-based AAA. California drivers are paying $4.007 a gallon.

“The ethanol market has been screaming,” said Phil Flynn, senior market analyst at Price Futures Group in Chicago. “But I think gasoline and ethanol are close

‘GELATO IS NO JOKE’

ne episode of “60 minutes” was all it took to seal the deal. The CBS television series covered a story about everyday Americans whisking off to Italy to study gelato-making at Carpigiani Gelato University in Bologna and coming back to set up shop on American soil.

With an inherent affinity for authentic gelato and all things Italian, married couple Andrea and Tory Chiappelli of Batavia decided to do just that.

Upon completion of the Carpigiani Gelato University course, the Chiappellis – with the help of business partner Tony Natale (formerly of Caserta, Italy) – opened the gelateria O’ Sole Mio along River Street in downtown Batavia in March 2013.

“Gelato is no joke; they take it seriously [in Italy],” owner Tory Chiappelli said of the intensive two-week course, which was solely taught in Italian. “In Italy, there’s a gelato shop on every corner. In the U.S., they are few and far between.”

The name O’ Sole Mio – which translates to “Oh, My Sun” – came from a song by opera singer Luciano Pavarotti, and it also was the name of the couple’s favorite neighborhood pizzeria in Andrea Chiappelli’s hometown of Modena, Italy.

“Our tagline is bringing the Italian sun to Batavia,” Tory Chiappelli said, adding that she enjoys introducing authentic Italian fare to the Fox Valley community.

Since O’ Sole Mio’s inception a year ago, Tory Chiappelli has concocted more than 300 recipes as the head gelato chef, and she

creates new flavors in the restaurant’s gelato lab nearly every day.

After a successful summer and having to sustain the gumption needed to sell frozen dessert in one of the worst winters the area has seen in years, O’ Sole Mio, which has recently morphed into a full restaurant, will do what it does best – but this time – on a national stage.

The Italian eatery will compete in the Gelato World Tour in Austin, Texas, from Friday, May 9, to Sunday, May 11, when artisan gelato chefs across the U.S. will battle it out for the taste of sweet victory and a chance to represent the U.S. in a world competition.

“I think it would be really amazing if we placed,” said Tory Chiappelli, who decided to enter the flavor Orange Blossom after a visit to California to see her mother. “I thought it was unique enough but simple enough. I didn’t want it really sweet; we have a bunch of Italian judges, and they don’t do really sweet stuff in Italy. … We got a really great response in California when we made the gelato there.”

Deciding which flavor to submit was no easy task, as the restaurant doesn’t have a signature flavor, Tory Chiappelli said.

A Facebook callout for customers’ choices didn’t help with narrowing down the flavor database, but she said Orange Blossom will be available to try at O’ Sole Mio for an extra dose of feedback before the couple leaves for the competition.

Water Street Studios to present Spring Show PLANIT KANE planitkanenews@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Water Street Studios Spring Show will open at 6 p.m. Friday, April 11, and run through June 28.

For the show, Water Street Studios will welcome Jenny Lam, a Chicago-based artist and independent curator, as a guest juror.

“This is the most submissions we have received for a show,” said Water Street Studios’ gallery director Steven Lockwood in a news release.

“Not only did we receive submissions from all over the U.S., but Canada and Japan as well.

Only 20 out of the 100 artists who submitted artwork were offered gallery space to show their work. Of that, four pieces were selected as

honorable mentions: “Are We Having Fun Yet?” by Steve Clevenger of St. Charles; “Two Faces Two Blemished”

by Peter Kenar of Bloomington, Ind.; “Miao” by James Jenkins of Geneva; and “Dig Yourself” by Bart Woodstrup of Sycamore.

The Best of Show artist will be announced at 7 p.m. April 11. The winning artist will be awarded $250 and a free two-week solo show in Water Street Studios’ Kane County Chronicle Gallery.

Also opening April 11, the Kane County Chronicle Gallery will feature work by regional high school students who submitted work to the Congressional Art Competition; and the Loading Dock Gallery will feature the “Emerge: Batavia High School Student AP Art Show.”

“This is the fourth year

hosting the congressional competition show and the third year we have hosted the Batavia High School AP art show,” said Jim Kirkhoff, co-founder and director of development and public relations at Water Street Studios, in the release. “But this is the first time we have been able to run both shows at the same time. Giving students the opportunity to show their work to such a large audience is a major element of our mission. We look forward to providing more opportunities for these students in the future.”

Winemaker spotlight Hélène Seillan saw Cenyth as a natural extension of an existing partnership.

In a wine world loaded with male winemakers and owners, Cenyth is a seamless blend Hélène Seillan that features fruit from four Sonoma appelations. Because they’ve worked harvests together in France, and the Jackson and Seillan families have built extensive bonds, Cenyth was conceived with an impressive pedigree.

“I think more important than two women is that it is a collaboration between two families that share a passion and vision,” Hélène Seillan said.

“Jess and my dad have always believed in Julia and I; each encouraged us to not be afraid to follow in their footsteps. To have the emotional support of both families and generations behind me is very empowering.

This is our first project together in the wine world; she contributed her artistic talent for the label and the image, while I contributed my winemaking touch to craft the wine.”

With deft touch, Hélène Seillan has hit all the right notes with Cenyth. Made with fruit sourced from low-yielding hillside and mountain vineyards, it has distinct fruit notes, a solid backbone and a velvety

mouthfeel. The nose conjures images of Bordeaux, and a snappy acidity hint that Cenyth can be enjoyed now or further improve with a few years in the cellar.

Even though she has roots in Bordeaux, Hélène Seillan embraced the bold flavors provided by California fruit. The bright sunshine and consistent warmth during the growing season offer California grapes a chance to reach a ripeness that is less predictable in Bordeaux.

“I only picked fruit that was, in my opinion, a true expression of Sonoma County,” Hélène Seillan said. “I focused on mountain fruit, which we farmed with low yields to capture the diverse terroirs of Sonoma Country for a complexity of flavors. As you noticed, the fruit goes directly to the nose and it has good depth. This is where the aging and blending of a diversity of Sonoma County vineyards is especially key.”

What to buy Cenyth, Sonoma County 2009 ($60): Bold blackberries and red currant stand out but effortlessly yield to dark chocolate and espresso notes in this wine. It’s a genius blend that has plenty of backbone from Cabernet Sauvignon (47 percent). The Merlot (28 percent) might be the star of the blend as it provides red fruit flavors, softness and lovely mouthfeel. Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec round out the blend.

S

t. Charles East girls track and field coach Tim Wolf offered athletes the option to enjoy their spring break this week.

He’d still hold optional workouts at school in the morning, but stressed that those so inclined to soak up the sun or the beach or any other locale could feel free.

Coming off a strong 2013 and a solid indoor season, Wolf knows the Saints won’t stray from training for long. It’s almost as if spring break is a blip on the path to next month’s Class 3A state meet.

“Our group’s real ambitious, so they’re always kind of flying high,” Wolf said.

“The few kids that I have that are hurt are healing well and looking to come back, so I’m kind of excited about that, too. Get them back in the mix and strengthen things up a little bit.”

Junior Allison Chmelik won the 3A triple jump (36 feet, 5¼ inches) before joining Casey McNichols, Corrin Adams and Jordan Shead on the winning 4x400-meter relay (3:59.72).

Shead also placed second in the 400.

There’s plenty more where that came from, the Saints insist.

“We’ve been pretty intense now, but it will be nice that now we can train outside with the curves and all that,” Chmelik said. “It’s more [true].”

Shead, Chmelik and her twin sister, Elizabeth, return from last season’s defending 3A 4x400 outdoor champ. The group helped the Saints finish seventh in the team race, just six points from tying for third.

Who comes out on top Monday in the latest edition of the hotly contested Kaneland-Rosary rivalry.

While the Knights and Royals are not conference rivals, the teams have developed a major rivalry based on their frequent postseason clashes.

Rosary has eliminated Kaneland in three of the past four seasons, including a 2-1, double overtime victory last year in the IHSA Class 2A Rochelle Regional final.

St. Charles East coach Paul Jennison has coached Saints soccer since 2008, first with the boys program, and later adding girls coaching duties to his plate.

By now, Jennison believes he can accurately project what he’s working with before the season begins, saying he’s generally experienced few surprises that he didn’t see coming.

“To be honest, I think most coaches know what they’re working with before the season starts,” Jennison said. “Once you pick your team, I think in that preseason, you start to get a grasp for what you’ve got.

“I would be very surprised if any coach said they came out on the field and found a team they didn’t know that they had.”

Jennison has coached some prolific offensive teams at East and others that have struggled to put away their share of scoring opportunities.

That ability to finish often is a makeor-break characteristic in a team’s season. Through two games this spring, East has seen mixed results, ending in a scoreless tie against Fremd before ripping Streamwood on Tuesday, 8-1.

That small sample size aside, Jennison thinks the Saints have the makings of a productive offensive team.

“You’re always hoping if you put the ball in the box and you get service in net that people are going to attack it,” Jennison said. “At the end of the day it doesn’t matter how much you can deliver it, if kids don’t want to get on the end of the ball, you’re going to struggle. I think we’ve got girls that want to get on the end and want to attack that.”

because of a spring break conflict but saw action last week against East Aurora. Loebel, a Nebraska recruit, missed last season with a torn ACL and encountered additional knee woes during basketball season that sidelined her for part of the winter.

Owens said Loebel is working back into soccer game shape. She could form a strong 1-2 scoring punch with Mary Landry, who has scored in each of the Vikings’ first three matches.

Position change afoot Rosary junior standout Maria Witte will move from defense to a center-midfield role this season, according to first-year Rosary coach Brian Frank.

Frank said Witte’s skills are needed to help stir the Royals’ attack. The junior made a college commitment during the winter to St. Cloud State (Minn.).

Witte (recovering from a concussion) did not play in either of Rosary’s first two matches – losses to Oswego and Oswego East – but Frank is hopefully she can return for the Royals’ next match Monday against Kaneland.

Some days, it’s going to be 3-0.

The St. Charles North softball team’s season is just two games old, but already the North Stars have experienced results in games at both ends of the run-scoring spectrum.

The good news for the North Stars is that they’ve won both.

A day after starting the season with a slugfest victory against Plainfield Central, North pulled out a 3-0 win Wednesday against Schaumburg behind Sabrina Rabin’s three-hitter.

“I think we can score in multiple ways,” North Tom Poulin said. “We can win in a shootout, a high-scoring game, or we could manufacture a couple runs. I thought we hit the ball hard today, some of them were right at people. But we were aggressive on the bases again. … Schaumburg’s a good opponent; I’m happy just to get a win. That’s a strong conference and a strong team.”

In a drastic departure from Tuesday’s high-scoring affair, the scoring summary was a

brief one.

Third baseman Erin Nemetz drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, the North Stars picked up another two runs, the first scoring on an error at first base and the second coming home on an RBI double from second baseman KaitSabrina Rabin lyn Waslawski.

And that’s all the North Stars needed.

The Northwestern-bound Rabin was strong after an outing she’d rather forget in the team’s first game. Although she didn’t record a strikeout – neither side did – Rabin didn’t allow a run and scattered five base runners over her seven innings. Stranded runners were a theme: The Saxons left five on base, and the North Stars left eight.

“Her control was a lot better today,” Poulin said of Rabin. “She pitched OK [Tuesday]. She was a little bit closer to herself [Wednesday]. She’s getting there. This is the second time she’s pitched out-

side since probably the fall. …

Once she gets clicking, she’s as dominant as they get in the circle.”

“I liked my pitching performance better than the last game,” Rabin said. “Each time out I throw, I’ll get better.

“It was good that we got on the board and we were able to keep them off. That helped, confidencewise, for our defense that we got a couple more. And also that we left the runners stranded, too.”

It’s just the beginning of the year for North, and though its first two wins haven’t exactly been similar, Poulin has a positive outlook on how things will play out this season.

“We know we have the talent,” Poulin said. “A lot of times, you have the pieces of the puzzle, you need to put them all together. I think we have the talent, but seeing how they fit together, really positive and optimistic about what will happen going forward with the way the chemistry’s developed already. And the pieces are there, all the pieces you need to be successful.”

Wolf, a longtime track official in his second season with the Saints, called the conference championship one of his top moments in coaching considering the way the team regrouped around a different lineup.

Still, the Saints won’t stray too far from the mix, and figure to be especially reliable in early outdoor meets as those

athletes who missed indoor time build their stamina. Junior distance standout Torree Scull certainly is one go-to point-scorer, and ran around five minutes in the 1,600 at Prep Top Times.

“She’s running extremely well right now,” Wolf said.

“She’s actually, in my opinion, probably running the best I’ve seen her run yet as a high-schooler.”

If the Saints have their way, superlatives will be the norm at the end of the spring, even by way of spring break.

“Just get your daily workout in,” Wolf said, “and when you come back, hopefully everybody’s rejuvenated a little bit and ready to go.”

GENEVA – Four of the Cubs’ top 30 prospects, according to Baseball America, are members of the 2014 Kane County Cougars, who are set to open the Midwest League season at Quad Cities at 6:30 p.m. today.

Manager Mark Johnson knows extra fan attention will be fixed on right-hander Paul Blackburn (12th-rated), center fielder Jake Mark Johnson Hannemann (17th), righty Tyler Skulina (19th) and infielder Daniel Lockhart (30th). Cultivating those careers alongside the others excites him each day considering the Cubs’ renewed emphasis on player development.

“They’re doing everything they possibly can. For us, we can’t ask for anything more than that,” Johnson said.

“Their commitment is to win a championship, and they’re putting it all in our hands to teach them and get them there and to mold them to be professionals and to play the game the right way and to build them all the way up.

It’s nice to know and it’s comfortable to know that they’re putting the ball in our court to mold these young men into professionals.”

Cubs president Theo Epstein stressed building the organization’s farm system as the lifeblood of its ongoing rebuilding plan. At Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, one the most visible signs to that end is the abundance of video equipment.

“They’re constantly watching the players, and Theo can sit and watch the guys from his office at Wrigley [Field],” C o u g a r s g e n e r a l m a n a ger Curtis Haug said. “And that’s a big thing, obviously, that they’re really keeping track of all their affiliation throughout the country and

keeping track of their younger players. Because that’s so vital to them right now.”

The running men: Blackburn, a supplemental firstround pick in 2012, will oppose Quad Cities righty Andrew Thurman tonight. Thurman was a second-round pick of the parent Houston Astros last season. Both pitchers played for Short-A affiliates in 2013.

While Blackburn hopes he won’t have to test his outfielders too often, he’s confident in the athletic trio behind him: Trey Martin (left field) Hannemann (center) and Yasiel Balaguert (right).

“No doubt everyone in the outfield has got tremendous range,” Blackburn said.

“They have good arms, they have great baseball IQs. They know how to get to balls, the best routes to take.

Martin began 2013 in Kane County before undergoing season-ending left shoulder season after just 11 games.

“Trey’s good. Trey’s good to go,” Johnson said. “He’s strong and healthy and really positive and excited about the season.”

Meat the Cougars: The chicken tender basket proved a popular pregame snack for a handful of Cougars last season, most often starting pitchers who had worked the day before.

Toews appeared to injure his left shoulder or arm when Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik drilled him into the boards Sunday night at Consol Energy Center.

So the Hawks will play the final two weeks of the regular season without their two biggest stars, Toews and Patrick Kane. Kane suffered an apparent knee injury March 19 and is expected back for the playoffs, as well (Quenneville said he should resume skating in the next couple of days).

St. Charles East baseball storms past Fremd with big 7th inning KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE PALATINE – A pitching duel for the first five innings, Wednesday’s nonconference baseball game between visiting St. Charles East and Fremd quickly transformed into a battle of resilient offenses.

The Saints earned a 7-4 victory courtesy of a six-run rally in the seventh. The game was tied at 1 entering the sixth.

“It was good to see us answer and keep fighting,” Saints coach Len Asquini said. “Just keep getting baserunners and then hopefully get fortunate with a big hit.”

Austin Regelbrugge’s tworun single helped open up the seventh as East improved to 3-0. Brannon Barry, Jake Milosch, Reid Olson and Regelbrugge had two hits apiece.

Morgan Freeman talks lemurs known for narrating documentaries for film and television. What are your thoughts on their educational value?

Freeman: I think the educational value is what comes first. People are glued to television. We can’t get our children out into the park, so if we can find the right stuff to present to them if they ARE going to be watching television, well, I’ve said that I have this belief in disseminating useful information about the planet and the diverse biology of it.

So, I’ve dedicated myself to being available for anything that helps that along.

It’s an obligation.

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now Morgan Freeman has been in the acting game for decades. Most American viewers first caught him during his run as Mark on “The Electric Company” in the 1970s. Yet even though he worked steadily in TV and films over the years, it wasn’t till his 1989 Golden Globe-winning performance in “Driving Miss Daisy” that he became a force to reckon with, equally recognizable for his one-of-a-kind face and his calm, reassuring, mellifluous voice.

Face and voice kind of became one in 1994 when he costarred in and narrated “The Shawshank Redemption,” and he brought the art of narrating educational films to a whole new level when his voice graced “March of the Penguins” in 2005.

His dulcet tones were part of what made the 2011 documentary “Born to Be Wild” – about orphaned orangutans – so fascinating.

Two of that film’s makers, writer Drew Fellman and cinematographer David Douglas, felt that project worked so well, they got back in touch with Freeman when they were making their new IMAX film “Island of Lemurs: Madagascar,” with Douglas now directing.

Freeman, 76, who seems to be in about a movie a month these days, didn’t even hesitate to say yes.

He recently spoke about the cute little primates from Madagascar, and about his career, in Los Angeles.

Symkus: What did you find endearing about lemurs?

Freeman: I didn’t know lemurs. But I have a friend who has a place in the Caribbean who raises lemurs.

Symkus: Do you think that since the popularity and success of “March of the Penguins” some of these stories get made because you’re attached to them?

Freeman: Yes and no. If I don’t do it, someone else will, and I’m a little reticent to say just as well. There are a lot of us who do this kind of work and do it quite well.

So, on a visit there about a year ago I was introduced to them up close and personal, and I got a little bit of information about them.

They’re terrific little creatures.

Symkus: Were you aware that even though there are 103 species of lemurs, they’re an endangered animal?

Freeman: There was a book called “Ishmael” in which the author explained that we are turning everything on this planet into food for humans.

We’ll eat it, and if we can’t eat it, we’ll kill it and take its place, just move it out of the way.

The amazing thing about Madagascar is that there were no humans there when the lemurs got there.

So, they flourished, and

life does … without us.

Symkus: Is the fact that lemurs are in trouble what got you interested in working on the film?

Freeman: David and Drew said, “We’re making this film about lemurs in Madagascar, and we would like to call upon you again to do the narration for us. We did very well with ‘Born to Be Wild,’ so if you have a mind to do it we would be happy to have you.”

And if we’re going to be doing something that gives some s-u-c-c-o-r – it’s a word I always read and never say – gives some attention and consideration to the other life forms on our planet, I’m happy to do it.

Symkus: You’ve become so well-

Symkus: What’s your actual process for doing narration?

Freeman: I get the script and I read the script. Generally there is footage that I get to see so I know what I’ll be talking about. And then it’s just a matter of sitting in front of a microphone and reading. (Lowers his voice.)

And I have these incredible pipes. (Laughs.)

But you can’t take too much credit for someone’s writing. There is always that to be considered.

Symkus: You seem to be working all the time. How do you manage to make so many movies?

Freeman: Well, it doesn’t take very long to do them.

They’ll say, “Morgan, would you mind doing this part in this movie? It’s only for a week.” Well, I could do 52!

Readers weigh in on pros, cons of only childhood A runner’s high is Dear Abby: “Maybe Only One in Georgia” (Jan. 7), who asked whether she should have a second child, needs to understand there are no guarantees. Her 5-year-old could end up hating her younger sibling, or adoring her. Parents create a child because they want to share their union with a new life. Each child is unique and represents a life commitment, not just 18 years of hard work.

I am the youngest of four, the “surprise” baby boy when my parents were in their 40s. I loved them and they never made me feel unwanted. I adore my older sister.

We were always close despite the eight-year age difference. My two brothers are very different than I am, and we don’t have much to do with one another.

“Maybe” should not produce another child to be a playmate to the one they have. It should be done only if they’re financially, emotionally and spiritually willing and capable of rearing another person. If not, they should enjoy the extra time, money and energy they’ll have, and perhaps give a needy dog or cat a home. – Youngest Child In Savannah

‘Microbiome’ may have a profound affect on health Dear Doctor K: Do the germs that live on or in us affect our health?

Dear Reader: Trillions of germs live in and on us, all of our lives.

They live on our skin, in our mouth, in our digestive tract and elsewhere. In yesterday’s column, I mentioned that amazing recent discoveries have greatly expanded our understanding of these germs and the effect they may have on our health.

Only a few years ago we thought that most of the germs that live on or in us were not affecting our health in any way.

We thought they were just along for the ride.

In the past few years, though, new technologies for identifying the germs that live on or in us, and for determining their genes, have produced astonishing results. (A gene is a stretch of DNA that makes a particular protein.

Proteins are the workhorses that cause each cell in the body to function correctly.)

We’ve always assumed that it was our genes – the genes inside each of our cells – that define how we function in health and that produce many of our diseases.

Many scientists have assumed

We humans have more than 20,000 different genes. Recently, we’ve learned that the bacteria that live on and in us have five to eight million genes. Do the math.

The microbes on and in us have nearly 400 times more genes than we do! The genes of all those bacteria and other microbes are collectively called the “microbiome.”

Genes of the microbiome make proteins that enter our bodies and affect our body chemistry.

Here’s one example. We have different types of bacteria living in our gut. Many of them help us digest carbohydrates – to break them down into simple sugars.

Those simple sugars enter our blood, and eventually travel to our cells to provide energy for them.

Some types of bacteria are very efficient at digesting carbohydrates. They produce more

simple sugars. Other bacteria are less efficient. What might that mean? Well, if a person had relatively more of the efficient types of bacteria, they would produce more simple sugars – and therefore more calories.

And that would mean a greater tendency to gain weight.

To make a long story short, there is growing evidence that the types of bacteria in our gut may be contributing to the obesity epidemic.

Research is also incriminating our gut bacteria in a remarkable spectrum of different diseases. These include Type 2 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer, heart disease, psoriasis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, asthma and even autism.

This field of research is still in its infancy. We don’t know yet how much effect our microbiome has on our health. But a growing number of scientists think it could be profound.

the ultimate high Dr. Wallace: I’m 17, and I’m in the process of turning my life around. A year ago I was a total loser. I was deep into the drug scene and tried to take my own life, and I almost succeeded. I was rushed to a hospital, and when I recovered I was placed in a psychiatric ward. It was there that I learned to take responsibility for my life.

I am now back in high school. I don’t get great grades, but I am learning how to study for the very first time, and I get C’s.

I have never been a good athlete, but I want to start running so someday I can run in a marathon race.

One of my counselors at the psychiatric ward assured me that a runner’s high is the ultimate high. Any help will be appreciated. Do I need to see a doctor first? – Nameless, Kansas City, Mo. Dear Nameless: First of all, I’m very proud of you – congratulations!

You are now on the right track.

When you begin running, follow these hints and you will get off to a good start: • Your equipment can be anything you have, except when it comes to shoes. Make sure you wear well-fitting running shoes.

These have thick, spongy soles and arch supports that take the strain off your knees.

• If possible, run on turf, not cement or other hard surfaces.

• For the first few days, walk more than you run.

Well, he got it half right.

During the bridge war, the bidding usually provides useful information for one side or the other – as in this deal. West leads the heart queen against four spades. How should South plan the play?

After West opened one notrump, East was right to run, using a transfer. East’s hand rated to be worthless in one no-trump, but would provide two or three trump tricks in two hearts. South intervened with two spades. West raised to three hearts with four-card support.

North was tempted to bid four spades, but he had no singleton, and knew that the usual approach after an opponent opens with a strong no-trump is to get into the auction, find a fit and get out of the auction. It is rare that a game is makable. So North settled for three spades.

However, South, liking his hand, gave himself game.

Always check the high-card points, especially when an opponent opened. Here, only 16 are missing, so West is marked with all of the key honors, making him a candidate for an endplay.

South wins with his heart ace, cashes the spade ace (delighted to see East follow suit), takes the heart king, cashes dummy’s top clubs, and ruffs the club six in his hand. Then he leads a trump.

West wins, but has no riposte.

Either he opens up diamonds, giving declarer a trick with his king, or he leads a heart, allowing South to sluff one of dummy’s diamonds and ruff in his hand.
