Kaneland students thrive at literary festival KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla MAPLE PARK – Kaneland High School student Lenora Murphy wrote her “heart skipped a beat” when she learned her play, “Pieces of Harper’s Heart,” was honored as a critic’s choice selection last week at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Literary Festival in DeKalb.

Kaneland students enjoyed a successful day at the event, with two students – Murphy and Jacora Hamaker – earning the critic’s choice award, which is the top honor at the event.

Several students received a first-place honor – Chris Diehl for literary critical essay and Michelle Schneider, Stephen Gannon, McKayla Helm and Murphy for poetry. Helm took a second-place award for short story. Schneider and Natalie Davis earned honorable mentions for short stories.

On page 4 of the April 17 edition of the Kane County Chronicle, a story about the Fabyans’ bedroom furniture requires correction.

Friends of Fabyan paid for the furniture to be shipped. Friends of Fabyan also opened the museum in 1981 through curator Marie Frasz, who had a contract with the Kane County Forest Preserve. Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley was contracted to run the museum after Frasz retired in 1995. The Chronicle regrets the errors.

Murphy, writing in an email, noted she was able to see her play performed in February at Kaneland.

Kaneland teacher Kristen Johnson has been bringing students to the event for years.

She said students submit their entries for judging in advance.

At the festival, they attend workshops led by judges and

take part in the awards ceremony. She said many students who submit entries are part of a longtime club at the school, called Writer’s Block. Johnson is the adviser of the club, but she said the competition is open, and students don’t need to belong to the club to participate.

first time she recalls Kaneland having two critic’s choice awards in the same year. She said there also were more first-place finishers than usual.

“Everything that got entered was good,” Johnson said.

Helm, writing in an email, called the festival, “the perfect opportunity to have someone professional assess a student’s work. This can be a frightening and hopeless notion at first, especially with younger, insecure writers. They question the importance and originality of their pieces, and then concern themselves over the number of possible people entering. The fact is all writers suffer under the greatest critic of all: themselves. Lit fest helps students achieve confidence with writing, and overcoming the negative inner voice is the most important win of all.”

SUGAR GROVE – More development is on the horizon for Sugar Grove this year.

Village President Sean Michels will talk about what is in store for Sugar Grove as he presents the 2015 Sean Michels State of the Village address on Friday. The program will be from 8:15 to 10 a.m. in the College Academic and Professional Center, Room D, at Waubonsee Community College, near the intersection of Route 47 and Waubonsee Drive in Sugar Grove.

From 7:30 to 8:15 a.m., there will be registration and networking, along with a buffet breakfast. The program is being sponsored by the Sugar

Grove Economic Development Corp. and the Sugar Grove Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Advance registration for the event has ended. The cost is $25 a person at the door.

One of the projects Michels will talk about is a new senior apartment complex in Sugar Grove that is set to open at the end of July or the beginning of August. In addition, a new American Heartland Bank is set to open in August at Wheeler Road and Route 47, Michels said.

Developments in the works include an assisted living center. Construction on the center is expected to start this summer, he said.

“We also have a number of road projects this year, and Rich Harvest Farms golf course has two amateur

events this year,” Michels said.

He said Sugar Grove seems to be on an upswing.

“As the village grows, so

do the size of the projects,” he said. “I think that is a good sign for the village and indicative that we’re getting bigger.”

LOCAL NEWS Elburn police officer faces sex assault charges KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – An Elburn police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave after being charged with 21 felony counts on accusations he sexually assaulted a child, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

David L. Wright, 53, of McDonald Road in Campton Hills , faces 10 counts of predatory criminal sexual assault, each a Class X felony, and David L. Wright 11 counts of criminal sexual assault, each a Class 1 felony.

He is accused of sexually assaulting a child he knew between March 2005 and April 2015, the release states. The release indicates the child was younger than 13 when the assaults began.

Wright reportedly was taken into custody late Monday morning at his home.

He remained as of Tuesday afternoon at the Kane County

Jail on $500,000 bond, according to the release. He must post 10 percent – or $50,000 – to be released.

Should he post bail, Wright will be prohibited from having direct or indirect contact with the child and the child’s family until further order from the court, the release states. It notes he also must stay at least 150 feet from the child’s residence and school and surrender all firearms and ammunition to authorities.

Wright is expected in Associate Judge Clint Hull’s courtroom at 9 a.m. May 6.

If convicted, Wright would face a sentence between six and 30 years on each Class X count and four to 15 years on each Class 1 count, to be served consecutive to one another, according to the release. He would not be eligible for probation.

He also would be required to register as a sexual offender.

The release indicates Wright has been an Elburn police officer since 1991 and has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

April 7 election results now certified, official

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Votes for the April 7 consolidated election are now certified and official, Kane County Chief Deputy Clerk of Elections Suzanne Fahnestock said.

“We already submitted our numbers to the [Illinois] State Board of Elections,” Fahnestock said. “We submitted everything last week.”

Candidates who lost in close races have until Mon-

day to file a discovery recount to challenge election results.

Fahnestock said.

In the Geneva 1st Ward race between Tara Burghart and Patrick Lenski, three absentee ballots boosted Burghart’s tally to 253, which is 10 votes more than Lenski’s 243.

In the Kaneland School District 302 Board race, Ryan Kerry’s final tally from Kane County, DeKalb County and the Aurora Election Commission was 907, a two-vote lead over Dan Nagel’s total of 905.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The Maple Park Police Department may be small – its roster has one full-time employee and about six part-timers – but it knows how to pack a fundraising wallop.

A year after raising about $63,000 for Special Olympics Illinois, and thus becoming the top fundraiser in 2013, the Maple Park Police Department has topped every other state law enforcement agency again.

It raised $87,515.44 in 2014, an amount that not only earned it the distinction of being that year’s top fundraising department but also the first to earn that distinction for two consecutive years.

Chief Mike Acosta said for a “very small” department, the achievement “shows what heart the community has.” Sgt. Tony Ayala had similar sentiments. In a written statement, he described it as “such an honor to be part of a community with so much heart.”

The County Board is expected to approve the resolution at its May 12 meeting.

“I’m very proud of what my people have done,” Acosta said, including the supporters, sponsors and Special Olympics athletes in that group. “I couldn’t do it without the MacRunnelses and the group of people that they have.”

Jim MacRunnels, who coordinates the fundraising efforts with his wife, said they get help from a group of about 15 volunteers, and the support continues to grow.

“We wrangle a lot of our friends into helping, and they see the benefits that we do and the good that we do for Special Olympics, and they buy into it,” MacRunnels said.

Fundraising events are held throughout the year and include a booth at the Kane County Flea Market every

month, the polar plunge, and the Pulling for Special Olympics sporting clay/trap shoot in May, he said.

MacRunnels, who has attended the summer games, said he and his wife get a lot more for what they give.

“It’s competitive fun on the fundraising,” he said. “The

incentive is to help everyone make more money for the cause.”

MacRunnels and Acosta said the department aims to raise $100,000 this year and to continue its trend of being the top fundraiser.

“We’re pushing for the three-peat,” MacRunnels said.

Sugar Grove Corn Boil fireworks funding sought

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A fireworks show is already on the schedule for this year’s Sugar Grove Corn Boil, set for 9:30 p.m. July 25, the third day of the four-day festival.

But work is underway to raise about $15,000 to pay for the display and to have the show named after Sugar Grove Trustee Bob Bohler, who died of cancer Sunday.

Sugar Grove Trustee Kevin Geary said the festival’s board will consider naming the fire-

works show for Bohler at its meeting next month.

“It has not been passed by the board yet, so we can’t say it’s the Bob Bohler fireworks, but the discussion has begun,” Geary said.

The Sugar Grove Corn Boil is a local nonprofit organization that hosts the festival.

The Sugar Grove Lions Club used to run the fireworks at the festival, but after the Lions disbanded, the Corn Boil took it on, as well, Geary said.

Bohler did all the work to facilitate it, Geary said. In fact, Bohler already had filed

the paperwork for this year’s fireworks before he died, including negotiating a contract with the fireworks company, Geary said.

“Everything is a go,” Geary said. “He had asked for me to step in this year and make sure it comes off without a hitch, so I’m picking up where he left off. We’ve talked to the property owner, the tenant farmer to secure the site for the launch. I’ve been working with the fireworks company, so that everything that is needed is in place.”

Geary said a final push for resident and business donations using donation cans will begin in June. Donations also can be made to the Sugar Grove Corn Boil website, www.sugargrovecornboil.org.

Pat Graceffa, a Sugar Grove Public Library Board member and a Go Fund Me donor, wrote in an email that the Corn Boil’s fireworks display “is one of the finest firework displays you will see in our

state.”

“I think this year, the fireworks will have a special meaning to us all in Sugar Grove, because Sugar Grove Village Trustee Bob Bohler was the one who made sure we always had a terrific display every year,” Graceffa wrote.

“Right up to the end, Bob was still helping us with getting the permits, the airport authorization, working things out at the farm, putting together the music track and actually figuring out what special fireworks were included in the display,” Graceffa added.

Batavia aldermen are debating whether the city should give $100,000 in tax increment financing funds to help fund an improvement project at the Batavia Public Library at 10 S. Batavia Ave. in a designated TIF district.

The project includes reconfiguring and expanding the library’s stairway at the corner of Wilson and Water streets.

Batavia Public Library Director George Scheetz said the stairway would be expanded to create more of an open view and entryway into that part of the library.

Stark was one of several aldermen voicing support for the project.

“The building is one of the crown jewels of our town,” Stark said. “I don’t think they are out of line. It doesn’t seem unreasonable.”

Marty Callahan said he didn’t think the city should help fund the project, especially in light of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposal to slash in half the local governments’ share of the state income tax.

Resident Rob Hollis also was opposed to the city using TIF funds for the project.

“I don’t disagree that widening the staircase would be nice,” Hollis said, addressing aldermen. “I just think that there are better things we could invest $100,000 in.”

Several other exterior improvements are part of the project, including repairing sidewalks around the building.

Providers worry as mental health services cuts loom

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Denise Edwards, of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, described calls seeking referrals for mental health assistance in the wake of funding cuts.

“This was a wife and she’s calling, ‘My husband has been crying for three days now. He can’t stop weeping,’ ” Edwards said. “ ‘This happens from time to time. The next thing is he’s going to start feeling suicidal, and he makes plans. … I called the police twice and now the police are billing me, because when they get to my house … he says he is not suicidal. What do I do with that?’ That is a hard question to answer.”

About 45 people attended a League of Women Voters of Central Kane County forum on mental health treatment Tuesday at the St. Charles Public Library. Edwards was one of

six panelists who talked about impending funding cuts from the state, which will reduce services and programs.

Another panelist, Jerry Murphy, executive director of the INC board representing seven townships’ mental health boards, said local resources need to make up the funding losses.

“I exchanged emails with [a legislator] last week, and his stance is the [service] agencies are going to have to learn to rely less and less on state money and more on local funds and fundraising,” Murphy said.

Bill Beith, who worked in the mental health field for 30 years and now serves on the Kane County Mental Health Advisory Committee, said the committee is looking at efficient and economical ways to deliver services.

“You can’t have independent silos of services,” Beith said. “It’s a finite set of resourc-

es that is getting smaller. Collaboratively, we can work together and make those stretch as far as we can and as efficiently as we can.”

Kane County Judge Clint Hull, who runs the Alternative Treatment Court for those with mental illness, praised the volunteers from NAMI who help out.

“We appreciate it,” Hull said. “Each and every day, we see the benefits. It’s a dismal outlook, but from our perspective, your answer is never ‘We don’t have enough funding.’ ” Lynn O’Shea, executive director of Association for Individual Development, said the public should oppose the proposed state funding cuts in mental health and human services.

“I hope when you leave here you will be appalled at the proposed cuts and say, ‘No more cuts. We can’t afford the cuts,’ ” O’Shea said.

BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting rejected a request by Batavia Public Library officials seeking tax increment financing assistance from the city to help pay for a $950,000 building repair project.

Six aldermen recommended approval of the request, while seven aldermen voted against it. Those in favor of the request included 1st Ward Alderman Mike O’Brien, 2nd Ward Alderman Alan Wollf, 3rd Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit, 4th Ward Alderman Susan Stark, 5th Ward Alderman Lucy Thelin Atac and 7th Ward Alderman Dave Brown. First Ward Alderman Carl Fischer was absent from the meeting.

The recommendation now will go to the full Batavia City Council on Monday with a negative recommendation.

Elburn motorcycle enthusiast gets one last ride

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Kevin Knight didn’t care what it took – when the weather improved, he wanted to take his 1977 Harley-Davidson Low Rider back out on the road.

Knight, 56, bought the Low Rider when he was 20 years old and had loved motorcycles ever since, his wife, Cathy, said. He never made it back onto his bike, but Knight’s family still made sure he would have one last ride.

Kevin Knight, of Elburn, died April 20 after battling a rare type of pancreatic cancer. His taupe casket Saturday was placed into a glass-enclosed hearse and pulled by a three-wheeled Harley Davidson Road King to his final resting place in Oak Hill Cemetery in Geneva.

The motorcycle hearse, known as The Farewell Ride, is offered by Krause Funeral Home in Milwaukee. It was brought to Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main St., St.

Krumm thought of the special hearse when Kevin Knight’s

family talked about his wishes as they made funeral arrangements.

Along with his love of motorcycles, Kevin Knight loved to share his knowledge of operating and wrestling, Cathy Knight said. He was a member of the Local No. 150 Operators Union and worked for Waste Management for more than 30 years, according to his obituary.

Kevin Knight also helped coach students in the Kaneland Knights Wrestling Club.

Tony Knight, 26, said his father would take him to wrestling and baseball practices on the 1977 Low Rider. On Saturday, he rode his father’s bike behind the motorcycle hearse along with friends and family on three other Harley Davidson motorcycles.

Tony Knight said he and his father had their differences in the past, but his father was probably the nicest guy he’d ever met.

“He’d always try to put a smile on everyone’s face,” Tony Knight said.

“I’m very confused by where this whole process is going,” said Theresa Barreiro, D-Aurora. “This is very gray.”

“I don’t see how Kane

County would benefit from any of these ‘whereases,’ ” she said.

Phil Lewis, R-St. Charles, said he struggled with the “very broad” proposals.

“I want Kane County to be effective in this process,” he said. “I’m reluctant to have something leave Kane County that is not decisive.”

Barb Wojnicki, R-Campton Hills, got applause from the public when she challenged Lauzen about the exercise’s connection to the governor’s agenda.

“We are definitely discussing this as a result of the Illinois Turnaround,” she said.

nor’s election was the catalyst for the discussion, but the county’s goal was to find the common ground.

Mary Shesgreen of Northern Illinois Jobs with Justice, who spoke during public comment, said she struggled listening to the discussion, which had a narrow range of dialogue.

“It felt to me so controlled and so controlling,” she said.

Lauzen said Tuesday’s discussion, which didn’t involve any formal action, was just a first step. It was indicated the topic will advance to the Executive Committee, which is next scheduled to meet at 9 a.m. May 6.

CARL DE KLYEN Carl De Klyen, age 78, of Batavia, formerly of St. Charles, passed away April 26, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Oak Park, IL to John and Helen De Klyen. Carl attended Morton High School in Cicero, IL. He met his bride Mary Lou of 57 years in school. They raised their family in St. Charles. Carl loved to fish and bowl, but his whole life was his grand-kids.

Carl was born in Toronto, Canada on March 2, 1922, to the late Carl Francis and Frederica Jaynes. Carl served in the 1st Canadian Paratroop Batallion during World War II. He was in England on D day. Carl and one other from his company did not have to jump that fateful day.

Carl was married to Alberta (Park) for 65 years. They made their home in Dundee, IL on Sleepy Hollow Road. It was on this minifarm that they raised their four children. Carl was the founder of Elgin Precision Glass Company.

Geneva District 304 hires 2 new elementary principals

GENEVA – Geneva School District 304 officials announced the hiring of two new elementary principals for the 2015-16 school year – Brenna Westerhoff at Harrison Street School and Kimberly Hornberg at Heartland.

Both will begin their new duties July 1.

Westerhoff currently is Harrison’s student assistance coordinator and has 13 years of experience in teaching, leading and technology integration in the Geneva district, officials stated in a news release.

Did you know that M-Day was on April 21? That was the day Google decided to wake businesses up to the mobile revolution. Mobile has been growing for years, but the pace is picking up. In 2013, searches done on mobile devices outnumbered searches done on desktop computers. Businesses should have taken notice then (if not before) and made their websites easily viewable on phones and tablets.

But, many businesses missed the memo or ignored it.

The memo is coming out loud and clear now from a source that should be paid attention to….Google. Google’s “memo” was published on February 26, 2015. It included on April 21, 2015 Google will be implementing algorithm changes that will cause websites that are mobile optimized to be displayed higher in search results. Google’s announcement states, “Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal…Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices. “In lay terms this means that if a business wants it’s website to come up early to people searching on a phone, their website needs to be easy to read on a

phone. This means that a person should not have to zoom in or pinch and pull the screen to read the content. To see if a website is mobile friendly, use a mobile site tester online.

There are two ways to have a mobile optimized website. The first is a “bandaid” solution. It is having a separate mobile companion site. It is usually an abbreviated version of the desktop site. It typically has the most commonly viewed information, such as address, hours, and click to call function. The better long term solution is having a responsive design. A responsive website is a site that adjusts the content to be viewable on any size screen. The advantage is having all of the content on a website available to people viewing it on a mobile device.

Unless a business wants to see a decline in traffic (and more importantly potential customers) to their website, it is critical to have a mobile friendly website. If Google penalizes a website for not being mobile optimized, it will definitely result in less visits because more than half of searches are taking place on a mobile device and over 90% of people searching do not go past the first page of search results.

Soaking the ‘rich’ won’t fix Social Security issue

By ALLAN SLOAN The Washington Post It’s getting to be Social Security time. As the 2016 elections get closer, conservatives agitate to cut back benefits and liberals agitate to raise them.

Both sides are likely to increase the volume when Social Security’s delayed annual trustees report finally appears later this year. That’s when people might realize that in 2014, Social Security ran a $73 billion cash deficit – that gets to be serious money – even though its trust fund got bigger.

In this column today, we’ll look at an idea shared by a truly odd couple – Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on the right, and Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and other liberals on the left.

Christie proposes to deal with “the rich” by reducing benefits for Social Security retirees who have $80,000 of non-Social Security income and eliminating them entirely for people with $200,000 of such income.

Liberals want to increase benefits and safeguard the system in large part by eliminating or greatly raising the wage cap (currently $118,500) on which the 12.4 percent Social Security tax is collected. But when you look at the relationship between what higher-income people pay in Social Security taxes and the benefits they get, you see that what the “max tax”-payers get from Social Security is actually worth considerably less than the value of the taxes they pay into the system.

I know this because six years ago I asked Social Security’s actuaries to place a value on the benefits my wife and I stood to get in retirement compared with the value of the Social Security taxes she and I and our employers had paid over

the years. (I assume, as most analysts do, that the employers’ Social Security tax payments ultimately come out of their employees’ pockets.)

My wife and I offered a classic case because I had paid max tax for the 35-year period on which recipients’ Social Security benefits are based.

Guess what: Social Security’s actuaries calculated our benefits were worth only about 75 percent of the value of our contributions.

What’s more, because my wife and I pay income tax on 85 percent of our Social Security benefits – money that gets credited to the Social Security trust fund – our benefits are effectively reduced by an additional 20 percent or so. That means our benefits are worth only about half of what we put in.

The fact that I continued working – and paying maximum Social Security taxes – for five more years reduced our benefits even further relative to our contributions.

So, you see, people who earn the maximum wage covered

by Social Security – a more accurate term than “the rich” – are subsidizing Social Security rather than getting a fat deal.

But eliminating a promised benefit for which I’ve paid taxes for more than 50 years, as Christie wants to do, if I happen to have done well? To add 12.4 percent in Social Security tax to top earners’ marginal rate, as some liberals want to do by eliminating the salary cap? Either of those turns Social Security from an earned benefit that is subtly means-tested into welfare. And we all know what tends to happen to welfare in this country.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Keep recruiting tool To the Editor: There is a proposal in Springfield that would make an already challenging environment even more difficult for Illinois public universities to compete for top faculty and student talent.

House Bill 403 would end the 50 percent tuition discount children of state university employees receive to go to an Illinois public university.

We can’t afford to fund our universities, supporters argue, so why continue this perk for employees?

Yes, employees value this discount as an important part

of the compensation package.

But it’s about much more than that.

The tuition waiver is a recruiting and retention tool. I am hearing from many association members who came to Illinois, among many other choices where they could have taught and worked, to plant roots here because they knew their children could plant their roots here, too, with an affordable education. Universities bear the brunt of the costs from the tuition discount. But they embrace the waivers, knowing their faculty stay and students come to their campuses because of it.

When we are changing

pension and health care plans, slashing funding for our campuses and even talking about turning them into private institutions, we make our neighboring states salivate at the thought of our high-caliber intellectual talent – faculty, staff and students – heading across the borders.

What will keep these students and their families here without them? We need competitive advantages at Illinois universities, not another hurdle that will send students and faculty elsewhere.

‘I think we have the strength’ Vikings get big week started with shutout over rival Bulldogs

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Seconds removed from squeezing the final out of her two-hit shutout against Batavia’s softball team, Geneva right-hander Emily Plocinski embraced her sister and catcher, Kaitlyn.

This wasn’t your conventional greeting between the circle and home plate. As Emily Plocinski settled under an infield fly from the Bulldogs’ Alyssa Klemm, Kaitlyn Plocinski advanced toward the ball, too.

“I had no clue,” Emily Plocinski said. “I was calling it, she was calling it. It was kind of like, ‘Whatever.’ ” Geneva’s reaction to the 6-0 win proved anything but nonchalant, and not just because its battery emerged unscathed.

The Vikings, who visit fellow Upstate Eight Conference River Division contender St. Charles North today before playing at defending league champion St. Charles East on Friday, opened a challenging stretch with their first errorless game of the spring.

“It took us a little while to do it,” Vikings coach Greg Dierks said, “but look what happens when you do.”

A patient attack propelled Geneva (12-4, 8-2 UEC River) after Emily Plocinski and Bulldogs counterpart Rachael Lovestrand battled during a breezy first three innings.

Batavia (10-9, 5-6) surrendered two runs in the fourth inning, three in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Geneva scored five times with two outs, including its sixth-inning run against reliever Kaylan Waldron, who entered after the Vikings had started to sit on Lovestrand’s inside fastballs.

“I’ve got to give her a lot of credit for mixing it up on us,” Batavia coach Lupe Castellanos said. “Keeping us off-balance, keeping the ball in on our hands. We weren’t really able to barrel up any balls.”

The senior pitcher took the mound for the St. Charles North baseball team against rival St. Charles East at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, home of the Kane County Cougars.

Not only did Wright dominate, but he also became the school’s all-time pitching wins leader as the North Stars beat East, 4-1, in the first game of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division series.

It’s true what they say the biggest stars shine on the biggest stages, and Wright did just that, throwing a two-hitter in one of the biggest games of the

season for North (15-4, 9-3 UEC River) thus far.

“I’ve said it so many times, but Cory is the ultimate competitor,” North coach Todd Genke said. “He came up to me before the game and said, ‘Don’t even think about coming out there because I’m not coming out’.

For a kid to say that is just phenomenal.”

Wright’s 17 wins as a North Star eclipsed Zach Hirsch’s mark. Wright, a Kansas State recruit, grew up idolizing Hirsch, a fellow left-hander and 2009 North graduate, who played collegiately at Nebraska before being drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Wright struck out nine Saints while walking three. The only run he allowed came on a dropped third strike wild pitch with two outs in the sixth that

allowed East’s Anthony Adduci to score from second base.

North Stars catcher Kyle Khoury had a good look a Wright all night, and said the two of them have developed quite the connection behind the plate.

“We call it the Cory-Khoury connection,” Khoury joked.

“But no, he is a big-time pitcher and he always comes to compete. This was a big game for us to set the tone in the series and it’s big for us to get the win tonight.”

East (12-5, 7-3) squandered a good pitching performance

ney was hit by a pitch and stole second to lead off the fourth, John LeGare hit a ground ball to shortstop that was thrown away, attempting to throw out Novotney at third. He got up, thought about scoring, and rounded third base too far.

The throw back to third by Vyzral apparently nabbed Novotney at third. But hold on.

East third baseman Reid Olson did not allow Novotney to slide back, obstructing him with his knee in front of third. The umpires gathered and, after originally ruling Novotney out at third, he was awarded home for the game’s first run.

“It was absolutely the right call,” Genke said. “He said he saw it right away, but the bottom line is that they got it right.

It was nice to have four umpires out here.”

“It was hard to see for me,” said East coach Len Asquini, whose team’s dugout was on the first base line. “I couldn’t see interference, but bottom line, if we make the first throw, that play doesn’t happen. We have gone 1-2-1 (runs scored) in the last three. You can’t do that and not make plays in the field.”

East did not get many chances against Wright after that. He retired 12 straight at one point and 16 of the last 19 batters he faced.

“It means a lot not just for me, but for the whole team.”

Wright said. “We were coming off a tough loss, and on this stage, here, it was a great win for us and we hope to build off this and use it for the rest of this series and after.”

Game 2 of the series is set for 4:30 p.m. today at East.

SOFTBALL: KANELAND 4, SYCAMORE 1

Morrow loses perfect game in seventh, but Knights beat Spartans

Instead, she had to settle for a dominating one-hitter.

The ace pitcher was commanding all afternoon as the Knights beat Sycamore, 4-1, on Tuesday in Northern Illinois Big 12 East play.

Morrow, a Wisconsin recruit, allowed one hit – a solo home run by Sycamore’s Jor-

dyn Shultz in the top of the seventh – and no walks while striking out 11.

“I kept looking at the card and was thinking, ‘Holy smokes, she’s seen the minimum,’ ” Kaneland coach Peter Goff said. “Today is the reason Angie is going to pitch at Wisconsin. This is the best I’ve seen since we started. I’m proud of her effort.”

Through six innings, Morrow (8-1) retired all 18 batters and had one stretch in which she struck out 10 of 11 batters.

“I started to realize it in the sixth inning,” said Mor-

row, who has only thrown a perfect game in summer ball.

“It was like, ‘Oh, nobody’s been on base yet.’ ” However, she allowed a home run to Shultz to lead off the seventh – which curled just inside the foul pole in left field.

“I kept hoping (it would go foul),” Kaneland catcher Paige Kuefler said. “I was hoping for a gust of wind, but it didn’t.”

“It went right around,” Goff said. “It was picture perfect. It was like a nice little draw on a golf ball.”

In the first meeting between the two teams, the Spartans (10-7, 1-4 NI Big 12 East) hit the ball well off Morrow in a 10-6, eight-inning loss.

“I definitely wanted to come in and shut them down,” Morrow said. “That last game made me really anxious. Today, I knew I had to come in and shut them down right away.”

Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter said she felt the strike zone was wide Tuesday – particularly low and outside – but the Spartans failed to

adjust.

The Knights (12-5, 5-0) jumped on the board early Tuesday, scoring two runs in the first inning because of a pair of defensive miscues by the Spartans and an RBI double by Meg Cohrs, who finished 2 for 2.

Mary Clausen added an RBI single in the second inning and Kuefler led off the fifth with a solo home run to left field.

“I’ve been waiting for that perfect pitch,” Kuefler said.

“When I got it, it was just, boom. Dinger.”

Now the Vikings hope to be equally smooth against the North Stars and Saints.

“I think we have the strength, and our team is pretty good this year, so I think we’re going to hit St. Charles hard, hopefully, with our bats and our defense,” Emily Plocinski said.

St. Charles North (10-2-1) will be the on the field first, taking on Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, at 3 p.m. Friday. Batavia (101-3) will follow on the same field at 5 p.m. against Ankeny (Iowa) Centennial, which is ranked No. 31 in the nation, according to the Tournament of Champions news release.

The news release also has North ranked No. 43 nationally.

Win or lose, both teams are guaranteed three games over the weekend. No. 16 Collinsville, a downstate power, is also in the same bracket, which has eight teams.

“We go to this tournament for a couple of reasons,” North coach Ruth Vostal said. “It gives us a chance to see and play against some of the high caliber teams in the Midwest, but also allows us to do some team building and bonding.

So, we are very excited about heading there once again.”

This will be the North Stars’ seventh year heading to the tournament.

Batavia coach Mark Gianfrancesco thinks heading to the tournament is a great opportunity for his team and knows that win, lose or draw,

the Bulldogs will play three tough opponents.

“I obviously want to win every game, but I think either way we go in that top bracket, we’re going to face quality opponents,” he said. “That’s what you want at this point.

Getting closer to the playoffs, you want to play teams you may not be as familiar with. I think this will allow us to play games with a sense of urgency and intensity come playoff time.”

Geneva is getting close, but is not quite there.

The Vikings lost their opening game of the Naperville North Invite to Hinsdale Central on Friday, 1-0, in overtime. Geneva seemed to be affected by the loss, playing Saturday and falling, 3-0, to Wheaton North. It will play in the bottom consolation bracket, hosting St. Viator on Thursday.

COMING ATTRACTION St. Charles East is heading to the championship bracket of the Naperville North Invite.

The Saints (14-0) will head back to the invite after beating Loyola and Hinsdale Central in group play this past weekend. East will take on Waubonsie Valley at 5 p.m. Thursday at Naperville North, with the winner taking on the winner between Barrington and Naperville Central on Friday. The tournament wraps up with the championship game at noon Saturday.

If you take away a 5-1 loss to West Aurora during spring break, when Kaneland was without seven starters, the Knights have allowed one goal this season. They have scored 59 goals in those games, as well.

Coach Scott Parillo could not ask for much more out of his team and credited all the success during a current seven-game win streak to team defense.

“You’d like to say it’s just the defenders, but we really do defend as a team,” Parillo said.

“The last five games, we have maybe given up five or six shots on goal total. We would like to face some adversity before we get to the postseason, but I can’t expect them to give up goals because we want to try and play from behind.”

Parillo and the Knights (12-2, 3-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) had its only other loss come in a 1-0 defeat to Sycamore eight games ago.

Since that game, on April 10, Kaneland has scored 26 goals and allowed none.

All 12 Knights wins have come via shutout this year.

“The girls are working hard and having fun,” Parillo said.

We know we are going to face adversity in the playoffs, but the girls are working so hard and having fun, that you really cant ask for too much more.”

After playing five games this past week, Kaneland has games at DeKalb on Thursday and a rematch at Sycamore next Tuesday.

Already adaptable on the court, he also grows accustomed to occasional lineup shifting on the part of his dad, Bulldogs coach Brad Nelson. No matter his partner, Andrew Nelson, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, relishes the chance to compete.

Here’s an edited transcript of a conversation with Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley: What do you take away from you and Adam (Maris) beating Marmion in three sets?

It was a good match, and they’re our sectional opponent, so it was good to get a win for our seeding. … Adam and I will be playing doubles together for sectionals. We’ve played two

teams from the sectional now.

We lost to Metea [Valley] in three sets, and they’ll for sure be one of the top seeds in the sectional.

How is the [Upstate Eight Conference River Division] race shaping up?

We have a tough match Thursday against St. Charles North, and then I think it’s next Thursday we have (St. Charles) East at home.

We have two important meets coming up.

How often do you and your dad talk shop at home?

We talk about the lineup and stuff at home a little bit, but then we also talk about other things.

It’s fun having him as a coach.

We can go out and hit and he can tell me what I’m doing wrong and stuff. … We live about a block away form the high school, so it’s pretty nice.

Geneva sophomore girls volleyball player Ally Barrett committed to Connecticut this week, happily ending her college recruitment before it risked consuming her.

“I was hoping to commit at some point this spring, because it’s the general time when a lot of sophomores commit for volleyball,” Barrett said Tuesday.

“I was … grateful to get with a school that I love so much. It can be kind of exhausting with everyone talking to you about it.”

A 6-foot-1 outside hitter, Barrett has been a key cog in the Vikings’ attack for the past two seasons.

A number of her coaches at Marengo-based Club Fusion have ties to UConn’s program, namely Huskies assistant Ed Tolentino.

Barrett visited the Storrs, Connecticut, campus earlier this month.

“The school in general is very prestigious academically, and I loved the coaches,” Barrett said. “They were really great.”

First-year Bulldogs coach Kyle Sullivan calls Yunker “a great example of someone who can be successful without a lot of experience in his back pocket.”

As Batavia – 6-4 entering Tuesday’s game at Marmion – relies on veteran leaders such as captains Nick Lundberg, Nathan Pappas, Kenny Ryan and Carter Eberhardt, its newcomers continue developing alongside them.

Yunker, by definition, counts in that latter number, his built-in comfort with lacrosse notwithstanding. “I pretty much had my hands full with soccer,” he concedes about his fall sport, but that didn’t keep him from shoot-

“It’s really helped me be able to get out there and be ready to play with the guys and do the basic things, and maybe go beyond it,” Yunker said.

To be sure, soccer helped toward that end, too, as Yunker remains well-conditioned and aware of a few overlapping defensive principles between his sports.

“This is his first year playing, and he’s one of our strongest midfielders right

now, and it’s really because he’s just a hard-working athlete,” Sullivan said.

Weathering the lull: Golf course managers and pros routinely entertain die-hards no matter the early spring conditions, but this week’s favorable forecasts figure to bring much of the rest of the region’s golfing set outdoors.

“Every time we get a stretch of good weather, yeah, people are coming out of the woodwork. Can’t wait to play,” said Bill Ogiego, assistant pro at Pottawatomie Golf Course in St. Charles. “You know, after an extremely cold winter and … an extremely snowy winter, as soon as you can get out and go, they come out in droves. Which is great.

The Vikings rattled St. Charles North enough early in Tuesday night’s match between the two Upstate Eight Conference River Division rivals to win the first game, 25-23.

When the North Stars realized they had strategies that could counter 6 -8 Nick Buseski, 6-5 Jonathan Bishop and 6-4 Sam Wulfkuhle, they regained their composure and took the next two game, 25-18 and 25-15 to win the match.

North Stars coach Todd Weimer said his team’s spread offense overcame Geneva’s height advantage as North (15-7, 4-0 UEC River) took sole possession of first place in the conference.

“It’s helpful when you get multiple hitters who can score,” Weimer said “It’s harder to defend when you spread the ball around. It makes it harder for the other teams to defend us

when we mix things up.”

Brendan Donlevy led North’s attack with 10 kills, followed by Drew Lanz’s eight and Danny Hamilton’s five.

“It was disheartening a little bit we didn’t finish in that first set,” Weimer said. “We played much better in the second and third set. We cleaned up a couple little things – executed a little better on blocking and serving.”

Said Lanz: “I think we’re just really nervous and not playing our game in the first set. We finally got into it, loosened up and played better.”

Lanz also had seven digs.

Geneva and North, both sporting 3-0 conference records entering Tuesday’s match, had shared the top spot.

“This was the big match with both teams undefeated coming in,” Weimer said “It’s just a sweet feeling to be first place and in the driver’s seat.”

In the first game, tied at six different times, unforced North Stars errors plagued the team.

A Donlevy kill tied the score at 23. Bishop responded with a kill to retake the lead. The Vikings scored game point on a North hitting error.

Momentum shifted in the second game. The game was tied twice earlier before the North Stars gradually pulled away.

Geneva (14-9, 3-1) pulled within one point on a block. After that, North went on a 10-4 run to finish off the set.

“A lot of our big hitters weren’t really swinging, and I think mentally we kind of lost our focus,” said Buseski, who had a match-high 17 kills.

The North Stars led from start to finish in the third set.

“It started with our serve-receive. We had a breakdown there,” Geneva coach Annie Seitelman said. “It’s tough to run offense when you’re not in system. Our mental game kind of broke down, too. We got a little flustered and frustrated. That led to a lot of unforced errors on our side that we didn’t make in the first set.”

Danny Throop had 22 assists and nine digs for the North Stars. Teammate Trevor Gonzaga had 15 digs.

Geneva’s Luke Will made four kills. David Franz led the Vikings with 15 digs. He also had 21 assists. Ethan Roesch had 10 digs.

Brandon Yunker didn’t exactly emerge from the cradle cradling, although some of the first people to handle him had that lacrosse technique down pat.

His father, Daniel, played at Western Illinois. His uncle, Jimmy Pomillo, is a former Geneva assistant.

Until this spring, Yunker Brandon limited his BatYunker avia midfielder duties solely to soccer. With his prep career winding down, however, he elected to compete in lacrosse, a decision the senior dubbed a natural act.

“It was just kind of obvious,” Yunker said. “An easy

Gentle stretching can help relieve arthritis pain Dear Doctor K: Will stretching exercises help to relieve my arthritis pain?

Dear Reader: Yes, they will.

That may seem strange. After all, arthritis affects the joints – the ends of two adjacent bones and the space between them. In contrast, stretching involves muscles.

But the joints and the muscles around those joints are intimately connected.

A joint with arthritis hurts when it is asked to move. It is the muscles that move the bones that form a joint. When movement is painful, as it so often is for people with arthritis, it’s natural to limit movement. For example, if you straighten a leg, and feel pain owing to arthritis in a knee, you’ll tend to keep that knee bent.

Yet if you keep an arthritic joint bent, rather than moving it through its full range of motion, you allow muscles to stiffen in that position. Over time, the muscles shorten, limiting range of motion and prompting other problems.

Stretching can help people with osteoarthritis nip this sort of cycle in the bud. Stretches can also help people with rheumatoid arthritis improve their range of motion in damaged joints.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Before you begin, ask your doctor about stretching exercises to ease stiffness. Your doctor will probably advise you to work with a physical therapist who can design an exercise program tailored to your specific needs and goals. I also recommend that my arthritis patients do some resistance exercises to build or maintain strength in muscles that support key joints.

These tips can help as you get started: • Warm up thoroughly. Warming up your body before you start your stretching routine will pump more blood and oxygen to your muscles, loosening them and preparing them for more intense use.

Use a hot shower or bath, a heated pool, or even warm compresses or a heating pad to warm stiff joints before you stretch.

• Stretch during your least painful time of day. Morning, when stiffness tends to peak, won’t work for some people. Choosing a window of time after pain relievers take effect can help make

stretching easier.

• Adapt stretches. You may need to modify your stretches.

For example, it may be better for you to choose stretches you can do while seated, instead of standing.

• Expect some discomfort. I encourage everyone to stretch only to the point of mild tension, not pain. But some discomfort is to be expected with arthritis. Try the two-hour rule: If discomfort following stretches lasts longer than two hours, or is more severe than your usual pain, step down your routine.

Try doing fewer reps and holding stretches for less time.

As stretching becomes easier, gradually step it up again.

As with all types of exercise, you need to engage in stretching regularly in order to reap lasting benefits. A daily regimen is best, but do stretch at least two or three times a week. (I’ve put descriptions and photographs of two stretching exercises on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Teen hopes for lenient curfew Dr. Wallace: I’m 15 and will be allowed to start dating. My parents want to set a fair weekend curfew for me so that’s why I’m writing to you. I’m in the 10th grade and your response will be appreciated.

Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that I’m an honor student and a cheerleader, and a real responsible and reliable teen. I’m also a Red Cross certificated babysitter.

This organization recommends the following weekend curfews: for ninth-graders, 10 p.m.; 10th-graders, 11 p.m.; 11th-graders, 11:30 p.m.; 12th-graders, midnight. All exceptions need advance approval.

But since you impressed me as a “good kid,” I’d add 15 minutes to your curfew, bringing it to 11:15 p.m.

My research steered me to Chicago psychologist and sleep expert, the late Dr. Edmund Jacobson, who offered these effective tips on getting a good night’s sleep in his book: • Try to turn in at the same time every night. Set a regular bedtime routine of precise but mundane tasks, such as closing the shades or laying out the next day’s clothes.

Perform these tasks in the same order every night.

Once it becomes a habit, it will automatically trigger a sleep response.

• Never read, write or eat in bed. Any activity other than sleep that you associate with being in bed will aggravate insomnia.

• If you like a fast game of racquetball, play it in the morning or afternoon.

Over-stimulation late in the day may sabotage your slumber, but a good early workout will help you feel tired at night.

• Say no to coffee, tea, chocolate and cola drinks after dinner. Try a cup of warm milk.

• If at all possible, sleep in a dark, quiet room. Earplugs, masks and even the hum of an air conditioner are safe ways to block unwanted light and noise.

• Try “progressive muscle relaxation” at bedtime. First tense, then relax the muscles in various parts of your body.

• If you wake up during the night and can’t go back to sleep, don’t reward yourself by raiding the refrigerator or watching the late-late show.

In today’s deal, how can the defenders beat four spades?

West has a textbook three-level opening bid, and North has a textbook takeout double. Then note South’s advance. North will assume that South has six or seven high-card points, but here South has a trick more than that, so must jump to four spades.

West leads his singleton heart.

East wins with his jack and cashes the heart ace. West should anticipate making two discards – which?

West should throw first the diamond nine, then the diamond two. High-low asking his partner to shift to that suit. And if East does just that, West will ruff to defeat the contract.

If West does not discard like that, East will surely lead a fourth heart, hoping that it promotes a trump trick for West.

Remember the advice of Andy Robson, an English expert. If a three-level-or-higher pre-emptor leads a side suit, it is a singleton.

If he leads his own suit, play him for a singleton in your trump suit.
