Sugar Grove Trustee Bohler dies at 64

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Bob Bohler, who spent 18 years as a trustee on the Sugar Grove Village Board, died Sunday.

He was 64 years old.

Bohler, who had been battling cancer, had announced earlier this month he was resigning from the board.

He died at his home in Sugar Grove.

The visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Healy Chapel, 370 Division Drive, Sugar Grove. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Katharine Drexel Church, 8S055 Dugan Road, Sugar Grove.

Village President Sean Michels said Bohler last had attended a board meeting April 7. Michels said Bohler “will have a lasting impact” in Sugar Grove.

“His commitment to the village is top-rate,” Michels said.

Longtime Sugar Grove Trustees Mari Johnson and Kevin Geary said they thought highly of Bohler. Johnson said she had lived in Bohler’s neighborhood for years, and she said he did a lot of work in youth sports, including soccer, baseball and softball.

Geary said organizers are considering naming the fireworks show in Bohler’s honor.

However, Johnson said Bohler then started feeling better.

“He just did not want to quit. … He said, ‘I just don’t want to let go. I’m not ready to step aside,’ ” Johnson said, adding Bohler wanted to stay involved as long as he could.

She said Bohler made a decision to spend more time with family and friends. For instance, Johnson said Bohler taught her how to make a

homemade chicken pot pie.

She said she and another neighborhood resident got a six-hour lesson from Bohler.

Johnson said Bohler by then understood his time remaining was limited.

Previously, a proclamation of appreciation for Bohler was read at a Sugar Grove Village Board meeting. It honored Bohler as a community leader, children’s book writer, golfer and “prize-winning baker,” among other distinctions.

Geary praised Bohler, saying when Bohler was involved in a project, “Bob was not in it for the credit. He was in it because it was the right thing to do.”

Geary said they worked together on the Corn Boil for several years.

“You couldn’t have asked for a guy to be more involved in his community,” Geary said.

Fire causes $1,500 in damages to garage in St. Charles Township KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A fire that caused an estimated $1,500 in damages to an attached garage Saturday morning is under investigation, according to fire officials.

No one was injured in the incident, which fire crews

first received as a report at 10 a.m. Saturday of a garage fire. The garage is attached to a single-family home in the 5N900 block of Route 25 in St. Charles Township, according to a news release from the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District.

in front of the attached garage, the release states. The fire had spread to the garage itself. The homeowner was attempting to control it.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire with a hoseline and prevented its spread to other areas of the

garage, according to the release.

The fire was under control by 10:07 a.m. Saturday, the release states.

The provided damage estimate was $1,000 of property damage and $500 of damage to the contents.

No new record in kick scooter parade

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Randy Simonian did not make his goal of setting a world record for the largest kick scooter parade on Saturday, but he said participants had fun trying.

The event was set in a twomile route through downtown Batavia.

“We had 180 kick scooters, [and] the whole thing took less than 30 minutes,” said Simonian, a Batavia resident. “We didn’t come close to breaking the world record, [but] we had a blast. It was horrible. It was raining. It was cold. Everyone was wet. ... It really was fun.

Really, really fun.”

Simonian had hoped for at least 1,000 participants to break the 2013 Guinness World Record for 489 participants in a kick scooter parade in New Zealand.

The $5 entry fee was to raise money for Batavia United Way, which raises funds for programs that directly benefit Batavians. It also was to support CHIP IN Batavia, which helps students in temporary or transitioning housing situations, or who face poverty in Batavia.

The total raised for the charities has not been determined, he said.

Simonian said he always has been fascinated by Guinness World Records.

“I was interested in the guy with the longest fingernails, the world’s fastest human, the guy with the longest mustache – ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been intrigued,” Simonian said. “I was trying to think of a way to raise money for homeless kids and people in need.”

But this first-time scooter effort will not be the last, Simonian said, as he is thinking

of how to combine Batavia’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration with another shot at a world record.

“There’s 15,000 people who come out for fireworks,” Simonian said. “One of the biggest costs for one of these events is the police, the paramedics and the porta-potties.”

Six portable toilets for Saturday’s event cost $600, he said.

If he can dovetail another try at a world record kick scooter parade where a lot of people will be gathered, and where portable toilets, police and paramedic costs already are covered, it might have a better shot.

“It would be mostly kids doing it,” Simonian said. “Parents would be carrying coolers, and kids could be carrying scooters.”

“I still have a pending application” to the Guinness World Record, he said. “We can make 20 attempts to break it.”

COVER STORY STAYING CONNECTED Parents of college kids send their love with care packages

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – More than 1,000 miles separated Geneva High School alumna Emily Schmid from her friends and family for much of this academic year as she began her pursuit toward a nursing degree from Arizona State University.

But despite the distance between her and four of her friends – who attend Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, Augustana College in Illinois, Indiana University in Indiana and Drake University in Iowa – efforts by their parents have helped them remain connected, she said.

The parents got together monthly to create care packages for their daughters and boys their girls are friends with.

“They never miss a month,” Schmid said, noting they have sent such items as mustache stickers, snacks, holiday candy, Mardi Gras beads and iTunes gift cards. “To get something from that far away really means a lot to me.”

The gifts not only make her feel a little closer to home, she said, but they also prompt text exchanges and FaceTime or Skype sessions between her and her friends.

Their parents – who have dubbed themselves Mothers of College Kids and Fathers of College Kids, or MOCK and FOCK for short – are getting something out of the experience, as well.

Two of the mothers, Ellen Schmid and Kelley Nelson, said it has strengthened the parents’ friendships with each other and has given them an opportunity to share the experience of seeing their first-

borns off to college.

“We were all newbies to the process of letting go,” Nelson said.

The idea developed as the five sets of parents – the Schmids, the McQueenys, the Tegges, the Nelsons and the Rushes – attended the teens’ graduation parties last summer. One of the mothers mentioned that a group in her neighborhood periodically made care packages for their college kids, Nelson said, and the idea took hold.

Plans for the first get-together quickly were arranged for the start of the school year, Nelson said.

“It was our way of getting through those first weeks,” she said. “We had such a good time from day one, and so did the dads.”

When your child leaves for college, Ellen Schmid said, nobody tells you all of your child’s friends will leave, too.

Compiling the care packages with the other parents helped her stay connected to her daughter’s friends, she said.

“I really did love the other girls just the same,” Ellen Schmid said.

Because each family contributes different items to the care packages, Nelson said the gifts have a larger meaning to the daughters.

“It reminds them that they have a larger circle of adults back home cheering them on, supporting them,” Nelson said.

Emily Schmid said it’s fun to guess who sent what.

“I usually know Mrs. Tegge sent these, Mrs. McQueeny made this,” she said. “It’s nice to know that everyone cares.”

The siblings also will leave home sooner than later, Ellen Schmid said, and the parents’ efforts show them they might get homesick but will get through it, too.

Emily Schmid, who would hear the parents talk about the MOCK/FOCK parties, said she finally got to experience one when she was home for spring break. Although college students might not think going to parent parties is fun, she said, the MOCK/FOCK event ranked among the most fun nights she had this year.

Noting her mom was sad when she left for college, Emily Schmid said the care package group gave the parents something else to think about.

“I think it’s something all parents should do,” she said.

Laura Rush said she and the other parents “so look forward” to their monthly get-togethers. She said they eagerly were awaiting their party last Friday at Houlihan’s since they hadn’t been together in over a month.

“We’ve supported each other all year,” Rush said. “It definitely helped the year go by quickly.”

Ken graduated from Lane Tech High School in Chicago Illinois, attended Northern University and became a highly talented Union Brick Layer, whose craft and artistry is found in many homes and buildings throughout Illinois and Florida.

Ken worked in hearing aide retail services and security positions later in life. Ken was a proud member of the United States Marine Corp for two years serving in the Philippine Islands as a security officer during the Korean War. Ken loved three things in life; the Lord Jesus Christ, his family and sports (and let’s not forget Portillo’s hot dogs!). He loved the Lord Jesus Christ and lived daily for him, volunteering in his church as a deacon, and also helping the poor, hungry and homeless at the Pacific Garden Mission in downtown Chicago. Charles Lindberg Green, of St Charles, Illinois passed away on April 22nd, 2015, at the age of 87.

“Chuck” was born in Pontiac, MI on March 3, 1928, the son of Edward Green and Sena Nelson. During third grade at Lincoln School in St Charles, he was smitten by Darlene June DeHart, who he married on July 2nd, 1949. They had 66 wonderful years together.

Chuck was a guy who on his own could build houses, rebuild engines, and fix just about anything, but he never sent an email. He was named after the first man to fly the Atlantic in 1927, and flew private planes as a hobby. He spent two years in the Navy as a radio man stationed in Samoa.

Chuck loved motorcycles, cars and will always be known for his ‘64 Buick Rivera which is still on display at the Volo Auto Museum. As a young man he liked to hunt, fish, loved kids and dogs, especially his little friend “Lady”.

Chuck learned to play “Turn Around Look at Me” on the organ and even hit some golf balls now and then with his “Sam Snead”clubs.

From his teenage years fixing cars at Zimmerman Ford in St Charles to owning his own mobile home parks, Chuck enjoyed work and never seemed to stop. Laying brick as a mason with the Porter Brothers led to a career supervising manufacturing at Howell Corporation, Revcor, and Gleason Corporation. He knew how things should be produced and how to get it done.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Darlene; daughter, Karen Langenstrass and husband Dave who live in Elgin; son, Tom and wife Jeanie of Mercer Island, Washington; sons, John of Cary, and David of South Elgin; and sixteen grandchildren, Erin Green, Eddie Green, Courtney Witchie and husband Brian, Martin Green, Tom McNamara, Joe Green and fiancée Julie Rogala, Alex McNamara and fiancée Sophie Wolfson, Margaret Melancen and husband Matt, Katie Langenstrass and husband Adam Shively, Jesse Langenstrass and fiancé Ben Bozer, Charlie Green, Terri and husband Nate Grose, Ryan Green and wife Jenny, Christine Tucker and husband Marv, Jenny Green, and Emily Green. He married Marilyn “Lynn” Marsh on March 2, 1946, and they lovingly raised four daughters. Their devotion to family was evident. He retired as a vice president of the Trust Department from the former First National Bank of Chicago and proceeded to enjoy many years of planning vacations to mountains, beaches and historic battlefields. He loved to vacation vicariously through travel magazines! He was an avid Chicago Bears fan, an HO scale model train collector, a speech writer and maker, a poet and journalist. He enjoyed following national politics, striving to better the country. He taught the value of the dollar and stressed the value of coupons! He often met with investment club members in Chicago and followed the stock market daily.

He was humble, rarely boasting of his achievements, was witty and loved to tease. He was a good, kind, and gentle man ... a gentleman.

He had unconditional love for his wife, Lynn, and his family. Batavia event raises money for CASA Kane County

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – PartyLite’s facility at 601 Kingsland Drive in Batavia was closed Monday as company officials assess the damage to the 500,000-squarefoot building caused by a fire Saturday night.

Firefighters shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday responded to the fire, which caused minor injuries to a firefighter and caused an estimated $1 million in damage to the building.

PartyLite sells candles, candle holders, flameless fragrance and wax warmers, as well as holiday and home decor.

Employees are expected to return to work by the end of the week, said Bobbi Schlesinger, spokesperson for PartyLite.

No employees were in the building at the time of the fire, she said.

“We are trying to assess when it would be safe for employees to return,” she said.

The fire started in a section of the building’s manufacturing division, Schlesinger said.

Firefighters continue to investigate the cause.

She said it appears a couple of pieces of equipment in the facility might need to be repaired or replaced because of the fire, and the facility should be operating “pretty normal-

ly” by the end of the week.

PartyLite’s inventory and distribution divisions also are located in the facility.

Schlesinger said the fire won’t affect the plant’s orders.

“Anyone who is expecting orders from PartyLite will receive them,” she said.

Schlesinger said the company was thankful for Batavia Fire Department’s rapid response to the fire. The fire was under control in about a half-hour.

“PartyLite is very grateful to the fire department for responding so quickly,” she said.

One firefighter battling the blaze was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and was released after treatment, and several others were monitored at the scene for signs of exhaustion, a fire official said.

Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker said the investigation into the fire could take several weeks.

BATAVIA – The return of an annual basketball game Saturday in Batavia ended with a victory for some teachers.

The Batavia Public School District 101 educators won, 79-60, in the Books vs. Badges game in the Batavia High School main gym, 1201 Main St., Batavia.

Each team had at least nine players for the charity game, with the Badges team consisting of Batavia police and fire personnel.

The Books vs. Badges basketball game previously took place every year to raise money for the city’s Fourth of July fireworks show, which is funded solely through donations.

One of the players on the Badges team, Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker, wanted to revive the charity game this year to benefit CASA Kane County.

Saturday’s game likely raised between $500 and $750, said Lori Hewitt, CASA Kane County’s director of development.

About 100 people – mostly adults – attended the game for a $5 admission and children, adults and seniors paid $3.

CASA Kane County also made $110 from a 50/50 raffle and will receive half the proceeds from concessions sold during the game, Hewitt said.

D-304 approves $20 fee hike to offset technology use

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Parents of Geneva High School students will pay an additional $20 in registration fees for all grade levels in the 2015-16 school year, after a unanimous vote Monday by the District 304 school board.

Assistant Superintendent for Business Services Donna Oberg said she was recommending the increase because it will help support increases in technology instruction.

Over the past five years, the district has seen a significant increase in technology use in classrooms, Oberg said.

For example, in 2010, the district had two iPods/iPads, and now has 275; 244 laptops but now has 587; 289 LCD projectors and now has 601; 194 tablets and now has 934, according to Oberg’s memo.

“Every curricular area includes a technology component. … This minimal increase will provide an offset being caused by the increasing costs of technology in the classroom.”

Donna Oberg Assistant superintendent for Business Services said in a memo “The recommended student registration fee would cover the cost of textbook and other instructional materials, as well as technology in the classrooms,” according to a memo from Oberg.

The additional fees also will help defray the costs of sup-

plies – such as paper and copier and printer ink, she said.

Fees for elementary students from kindergarten to fifth grade will be $95, up from $75, a 26.6 percent increase.

Middle school fees will be $115, up from $95, a 21.1 percent increase. And high school fees will be $140, up from $120, a 16.6 percent increase, according to the district.

The increase in registration fees will only bring in $114,000 more in revenue, Oberg said.

St. Charles aldermen back night work hours for Route 38 resurfacing

The aldermen voted, 9-0, in favor of night work for the project on Route 38 between Peck Road to Bricher Road and South 14th Street at their regular Government City Services Committee meeting.

“It’s a high-volume roadway … so we felt it appropriate that it take place during the nighttime hours,” said Karen Young, the city’s assistant director of public works, at the meeting.

The night work will be scheduled between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. and will start in St. Charles sometime

Although Route 38 between Peck and Bricher roads and South 14th Street is a mostly commercial area, the contractor has been contacted about starting work as early as possible during the night period to lessen the impact on nearby residents, Young said.

Route 38 will be resurfaced this year starting in western Kane County at Route 47 and continue east to Route 31.

The night work recommendation will be up for a final vote at the May 4 St. Charles City Council meeting.

Lynch’s work is cut out for her BLOOMBERG NEWS

After an inexcusable fivemonth delay, the Senate last week finally confirmed Loretta Lynch to be attorney general.

The vote is definitely good news for the White House and, not incidentally, the Justice Department. What it says about the Senate itself is less certain.

Lynch will start her job at a critical moment, when the use of force by police is spawning protests nationwide.

She will, for instance, have to decide whether to file a civil rights suit in the case of Eric Garner, the Staten Island man who died after police tackled him for resisting arrest, using a questionable chokehold. As she has been leading the inquiry into that case in her role as a federal prosecutor in New York, she is well positioned to make a sound judgment.

But she’ll also need to address the controversy more broadly, and one of the best ways to do that will be to improve the government’s collection of data. In December, Congress passed a law requiring local police departments to report data about deaths while in police custody to the Department of Justice in order to qualify for certain kinds of funding, and Lynch needs to ensure it is fully enforced.

She also will have to address the FBI’s systemic and shocking failures in forensic analysis, which recently came to light. She will take over probes of the Internal Revenue Service, for its handling of groups seeking tax-exempt status, and the Veterans Administration, for its handling of patient data. And she will be thrust into the middle of the debate over the federal government’s surveillance authority

under the Patriot Act, parts of which are set to expire in June.

The Senate will have to vote on that reauthorization, of course, just as it eventually voted on Lynch. And while it deserves credit for acting on her nomination, it would be a mistake to see her confirmation as an end to Senate dysfunction.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell deserves some praise for finally bringing her nomination to the floor, then voting – with just nine other Republicans – to confirm her.

At the same time, it’s fair to ask why he kept his decision to vote in favor secret until the last moment. Had McConnell announced his decision earlier in the process, more Republicans might have joined him.

Republicans’ resistance to Lynch was never about her background or qualifications.

They needed an outlet for their anger over President Barack Obama’s executive actions on immigration, and Lynch – who refused to disavow them – provided a convenient one, particularly for those running for president. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, voted “no,” and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, crusaded against her, although he couldn’t be bothered to stick around for the actual vote. Their attacks made South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham’s vote in favor of Lynch all the more commendable.

At least Lynch takes office with her own sterling reputation intact. Among the laws she must also enforce is the new one cracking down on human trafficking – the very one that for so many weeks stood in the way of her confirmation.

She has some 20 months to make a difference.

The late, great Robert Benchley is another favorite. When sent to Venice, Italy, on assignment, he was reported to have sent a telegram to his editor here in the U.S., saying, “City under water, wire instructions.”

amassed a collection of jokes and anecdotes like that. They still provide a laugh for me even after hearing them often.

Granted, there is not much to laugh about these days with all the tragedies in the world. Certainly a terminally ill patient lying in a hospital bed won’t find much to laugh about. Doctors and nurses are known to have a good sense of humor, even though they face tragedy every day. A nurse once told me that you have to laugh to keep from crying at times.

A laugh or a smile is a wonderful day brightener. What is the first thing you do when encountering a baby? You try to make him or her smile, don’t you? And doesn’t it make you feel wonderful when they

reward you with one?

I live by the old adage: “Laugh and the world laughs with you.

Weep and you weep alone. For this sad old earth has need of your mirth; it has tears enough of its own.”

If you have not laughed yet today, make a funny face in front of a mirror and have a good laugh at yourself. It’s not nice to laugh about others but OK to laugh at ourselves, for we will never run out of material.

I love to laugh and make others do the same. In my archives I found this: “He deserves Paradise who makes his companions laugh.”

T. CHARLES – Fox Valley Predators team captain Tommy Fink first embraced club rugby as a football training tool.

Six years later, the St. Charles East senior still strives to get the word out.

And trumpet rugby’s other benefits, too.

As East classmate Parker Vidmich asserts, the Predators compete “rain or shine,” an ethic that prompted happy and mucky scrums during a wet workout Saturday morning.

“You don’t necessarily need to be the biggest guy,” said the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Fink. “It’s all about the mindset. If you want to go hit that guy, then you’re going to go hit that guy.”

But not put his health in peril. Speaking amid cool raindrops at Breen over the weekend, Fink segued between platforms while wondering aloud about the program’s low turnout.

When he began as a freshman, Fink recalls, St. Charles Rugby fielded enough athletes to form three full teams for a 15-on-15 competition, in addition to alternates. This spring, the since-renamed Predators are under a firsttime consolidation with the Batavia Rugby Club and go about 23 athletes strong.

“That’s the problem, I think, is that people … hear ‘rugby,’ and they ask their parents about it, and everyone thinks, ‘Oh, it’s such a hard sport. It’s so barbaric and stuff,’ ” Fink said. “But

it’s really not. If people were to just come and watch the match, they would see that the ref does things to protect us from getting hurt, and it’s a completely different game. … I don’t have a shell of armor on, so if there’s a pile, I’m not going to dive on top of it, you know. It’s all about protecting yourself.”

Fink sported such padding during the fall as the East football team’s strongside outside linebacker. Ditto for Vidmich, who played middle linebacker for the Saints.

Other Predators, including Batavia senior Luke Schulz,

boast a wrestling background, mimicking director of coaching Jay Crawford’s path into rugby.

“I love the relationships this game brings to everyone,” Schulz said. “It’s awesome.

It’s like family out there, playing each other.”

That’s spoken like someone who contends that his own kin ranks closely with its longtime friends, the Watsons, who many consider to form B-Town’s first family of rugby.

Schulz followed two older brothers into the sport, much like coach Daniel “Doc” Wat-

son’s sons at Batavia.

Those ties represent Crawford’s belief in rugby as a life sport, something that can be part of an athlete’s long-term pursuits. A men’s league game was set to follow Saturday’s high school practice at Breen, which includes an area the St. Charles Park District zoned specifically for rugby.

“We’ve been tremendously lucky here with the park district and the dedicated field,” Crawford said. “They’ve been very welcome to it.”

Geneva’s Lillibridge eager to open junior hockey career

I

t crossed Graham Lillibridge’s mind, but he never thought it actually would happen.

On April 16, Lillibridge was signed to a tender by the Muskegon (Michigan) Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League.

The Geneva sophomore will debut with the team in the 2015-16 season. The USHL is considered by many to be the best junior hockey league in the United States.

“It definitely came as a surprise to me,” Lillibridge said. “I really couldn’t believe it. Once I got the offer, my parents and I decided that it was the best route for my development to get to the next level.”

With the terms of the tender, the Lumberjacks took the skilled defenseman off May’s USHL Phase I and II Draft board, and used their first-round pick on him.

Signing the tender guaranteed Lillibridge, 16, a spot on the team and requires him playing time in 55 percent of the games.

Although it is a requirement, Lillibridge sees it as a guarantee to play in games, and continue to develop before heading to college at Yale.

“I still plan to head to Yale,” Lillibridge said. “This is just another step and opportunity for me to grow as a player before playing in college.”

As a freshman, Lillibridge also was an important member of the Vikings’ boys golf program, and was part of the 2013 Kane County Chronicle all-area second time.

Last fall, he decided to stop competing in golf to focus on hockey.

As for the next step for his hockey career, Lillibridge will continue to live in Geneva, but will attend the Lumberjacks’ team camp from May 21 to 25. After the camp, Lillibridge will remain in Geneva until a few weeks before the season before moving to Muskegon in September.

He will attend Mona Shores High School in Norton Shores, Michigan, starting his junior year in the fall.

Lillibridge has not yet decided what his plans are for after the 60-game USHL season. His current thoughts lean toward staying in the league, where he could play for up to one more season after his 2017 high school graduation year.

“My current process has me enrolling in Yale and starting hockey in the 2018-19 season,” Lillibridge said. “I could play a few more years here if I choose to do that and keep developing.”

Lillibridge’s tender with the Lumberjacks lasts one season, after which he would be free to sign with any other team in the league.

Before signing the tender, Lillibridge played hockey with the Chicago Mission AAA hockey program. He is known for his speed as a defenseman, recording 11 points – including 10 assists – in 25 games for the U16 team this past season.

Lillibridge knows how great of an opportunity this could be for him.

“I’m really ecstatic for what my future holds,” he said.

The USHL has 251 players either playing in the NHL or currently under contract with an NHL team, including Blackhawks players Patrick Sharp, Brandon Saad and Scott Darling.

Of course, there are many channels through which he can stay connected, including Schulz, who plans to compete with the men’s

league as he begins attending community college locally next school year.

Then there’s St. Charles Rugby product Zach Vyhnanek, who is part of USA Rugby’s sports medicine staff and remains one of the top program pride points of recent years.

Crawford, a co-founder of St. Charles Rugby in 1987, knows every program alumnus might not ascend similarly, but if it’s safety prospective members are

worried about, he offers caution of his own.

Crawford referred to recent measures by the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and college football power Ohio State in consulting rugby coaches while developing shoulder leverage tackling techniques that help remove head contact from the process.

Reciting the basics of what Seattle calls the “Hawk Tackle,” Crawford discussed how the method correlates closely with rugby play-

ers’ objective to wrap and squeeze the ballcarrier’s thighs, then drive the ballcarrier to the ground.

“Super Bowl champs, Super Bowl runner-up. National champs,” Crawford said.

“They’re going, ‘How can these rugby players play this game without equipment, and they’ve taken the head out of the game?’ ” Fink hopes renewed energy in keeping various youth program members involved in the sport can carry over.

He’s grown weary of asking football teammates to join the Predators in the spring, only to hear of their participation in track or lacrosse.

Versed in the ways of tackling opponents due in part to rugby, Fink would like to think the sport itself might help him wrangle up a few more recruits.

“It’s the camaraderie, too,” he said. “It’s the guys that make me want to come back every single year.”

“Today was a really big win for us. Geneva was a really good team, and that was a tough match to lose, so it’s good to come back out here and get a good win,” Hanrahan said.

“I think we’re doing well with how we’re developing.

We’re really getting used to just playing our roles as a team,” Maren added.

Hanrahan and Maren’s victory came just in time for the start of Maris and Nelson’s third set, which became the focal point of all spectators with the match on the line.

Andrew Nelson, the coach’s son, gave Batavia a 2-0 lead when he split Hoss and Demoll with a forehand to center court. The Bulldogs then extended that lead to 3-0 and then 4-1 before breaking Marmion’s serve twice to close out the set.

AURORA – Adam Maris has been at the top of the lineup for most of the Batavia boys tennis team’s season.

The senior went to state last year at doubles, but Batavia coach Brad Nelson figured Maris’ experience would be best served at No. 1 singles.

However, Nelson shook things up Monday and Maris was paired with junior Andrew Nelson on the No. 1 doubles line.

And with the dual meet tied at 3, all eyes focused on the third set of their matchup against the Marmion pairing of Luke Hoss and Dave Demoll, as Maris and Nelson emerged with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 victory to clinch the 4-3 win for Batavia.

“We’re actually thinking about playing [Maris and Nelson] in sectionals together, so this is kind of what our sectional lineup might look like,” Brad Nelson said.

With Maris moving back into the doubles lineup, senior Josh Boyle moved into the No. 1 singles role and lost to Marmion’s John King, 6-2, 6-2.

King was a state participant in singles play as a sophomore for the Cadets (5-3).

Marmion took all three singles matchups, but with the revamped doubles roster, Batavia (8-3) still was in the hunt.

The No. 4 doubles pairing of Kevin Fiddelke and Gunnar Malm got Batavia on the board first with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. The seniors moved to 4-2 together on the season.

In No. 2 doubles, Emerson Hinzy and James Carr, who played Thursday at No. 1 against Geneva, managed a straight-set win, 6-4, 6-4.

Shortly after Hinzy and Carr finished, the No. 3 doubles pairing of Patrick Hanrahan and Tommy Maren got a comeback win to tie the meet at 3. Hanrahan and Maren dropped the first set to Marmion and battled back to force a third set just as they did at

NOTEWORTHY Girls county meet awaits its close-up No #promposal or any such pomp accompanied shifting the Kane County girls track and field meet from Friday to Thursday of this week.

Host St. Charles East was unable to secure a Fully Automatic Timing (FAT) system for a busy Friday night of track and field around the region, but that might have just added some glitz to the 2015 running.

“A lot of times it seems like on Friday, a lot of bigger schools have proms and stuff,” Kaneland girls coach Doug Ecker said. “I think it could be a tremendous meet being on Thursday.”

The county meet always seems to trigger some sort of extra effort from the 16-team field, as it ushers in the season’s stretch run. Conference meets, sectionals and the state meet are soon to follow.

For the Knights, there’s novelty not just in the prospect of advancing to Eastern Illinois’ famed blue track for state. East’s Norris Stadium, the county venue, hasn’t housed Knights girls athletes for a decade or so, in Ecker’s estimation.

“We don’t ever really get to compete against those guys anywhere,” Ecker

said. “They’ve gotten so much bigger than us and we don’t go to the same invitationals.”

Thanks to some offseason initiative from Geneva coach Peter Raak – who organized the upcoming hosting schedule after there had been ambiguity – athletes will have a better idea of when and where their season’s final push will begin.

St. Charles North is set to host the 2016 girls county meet, with the sites rotating in alphabetical order thereafter.

“Finally, we have some semblance of order of who’s going to host it for the next little, well, forever,” North coach John Osmanski said.

Cadets’ young guns Marmion boys coach Dan Thorpe hailed the Cadets’ kiddie corps after the team finished fourth in Friday’s 16team Brother Rice Relays.

Freshman Michael Ronzone shined again as part of the team’s deep distance group, while classmate Seth Groom cleared 40 feet, 1 inch in the triple jump.

“We’ve got some talented freshmen,” Thorpe said. “And now we get through the prom syndrome that all high schools have to go through and have a

good three weeks in May.”

GENEVA What happened: Foster Ignoffo, a junior, won the 400 meters in 1:00.76 while Kristin Higgins, a sophomore, cleared 5 feet, 5 inches in the high jump, helping Geneva to a runner-up finish in Saturday’s 13-team Glenbard West invitational. “A very, very nice surprise for us,” Vikings coach Peter Raak said of the team result.

Here come the Stars Saturday marked an open date for St. Charles North girls to begin with, but the stormy weather that washed fellow competitors out still seemed a natural conversation starter for Osmanski.

Or at least the recent season change associated with the rain.

“I’ve been pretty happy with the overall progression of pretty much all of our athletes,” Osmanski said. “I thought we had a pretty slow start in indoors in terms of girls running varsity caliber times. … But now up and down, with throwers, jumpers, vaulters, sprinters and distance, they’re starting to compete and hit those better times.”

Freshman Audrey Ernst won the 1,600 meters in 5:05.72 during Thursday’s Carlson-Anderson Classic at Batavia.

In the 800, Nina Olshever and Morgan Lain have hovered around 2:30, while a sprint group including Quinn Samanic and Allison Hursh pursues the mid-13 second threshold in the 100.

“We’re just getting faster,” Osmanski said. “We’re excited as we get headed into the championship weeks coming up.”

HITTING REWIND The Peter Archibald and Jake Mazanke show still has plenty of legs. Three years after engaging in several memorable 800-meter duels as seniors at Geneva and St. Charles East, respectively, Archibald and Mazanke joined forces as Loyola Chicago athletes at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, over the weekend. Archibald and Mazanke helped the Ramblers to a school-record run of 7:25.12 in the 4x800 relay, helping the school secure its first relay title at the event in 52 years.

Monday’s game fresh off two Upstate Eight Conference sweeps against Larkin and West Chicago.

Any extra-inning loss is going to sting, but Bulldogs coach Matt Holm did not want to see his team revert back to things that were costing the team games early in the season.

He knows when Batavia commits five errors – two in the 10th inning – it is going to be hard to win.

“We’re not good enough to make those mistakes and win games,” Holm said. “We’re definitely on an upswing, but you can’t make mistakes like we did today and expect to come out on top.”

After a three-run, five-hit first inning gave Marmion an early lead, Batavia stuck back in the fifth on a three-run home run off the bat of Luke Beckmann to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead.

They added one more run

in the fifth.

The home run ball was just one of the fly balls to right field that seemed to carry Monday afternoon.

“I kept watching the right fielder go back and back,” Young said. “It got out, but it’s just something that you can’t let affect you when you’re out there.”

Marmion came right back in its half of the fifth on an RBI single by Matthews. Marmion’s Edgar Sanchez tried to advance to third on the play and Batavia catcher Matt Musielak threw the ball into left field to allow the second run to score to knot the game

at five.

Matthews also scored the winning run in the 10th.

Rakow knows moving forward that focus is going to be key for the Cadets to be successful.

“We are a very young team, but I think the guys are starting to get it,” Rakow said. “I think they are realizing that when we stay focused, we can play some pretty good baseball.”

Batavia’s Nick Rogalski took the loss.

He pitched a season-high five innings in relief, throwing 78 pitches and allowing one earned run.

MAPLE PARK – Kaneland baseball coach Brian Aversa said the Knights had this week’s series against Yorkville circled on the schedule.

The Knights came up with two clutch hits, and their pitching and defense kept the Foxes’ offense in check for a 2-0 win Monday in the opener of a series that could have serious implications on which team takes the Northern Illinois Big 12 East title.

“It felt like a playoff game,” said Kaneland shortstop Joe Panico, who made several key defensive plays along with second baseman Austin Wheatley.

“Even when you wake up in the morning, you know you have to win this series.”

The Knights (11-7, 6-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) picked up both of their runs in the bottom of the fifth. Panico hit an RBI single before Joe Laudont followed with an RBI double to left field. “[Panico] got that line drive for a run we really needed and

then [Laudont] has just been smoking the ball right now,” Aversa said. “Those guys are guys we have to jump on their back and ride them for a bit.”

Laudont, who went 3 for 3, was the only player in the game with more than one hit.

AURORA – Marmion came into Monday’s nonconference baseball game against Batavia off a rain-shortened win Friday.

This time, the Cadets went a little longer to string together consecutive victories for the first time this season.

Nick Young pitched eight innings and Will Matthews had three hits to lead Marmion past Batavia, 6-5, in 10 innings.

Cadets freshman Chase Stanke’s grounder to third was thrown away in the 10th inning to allow the game-winning run to score.

Neither team played particularly well defensively, with nine total errors committed.

“I was happy with the way we stuck with it and didn’t give up,” Marmion coach Dave Rakow said. “I like the way we pitched and hit. The

fielding needs to be cleaned up, but overall, I was happy with the way we finished and stuck to the game plan.”

Young got a no decision for the Cadets (614), despite his eight innings on the mound.

Although the numbers weren’t eye-popping, Jon Young Rakow thought his 107 pitches allowed the junior pitcher to be efficient.

But Young’s composure stuck out to Rakow the most.

“He was probably the most calm one on the field,” Rakow said. “Even with the errors and mental mistakes we made, he kept it together and kept everyone focused.”

Thomas Boland came in for the final two innings to get the win, facing the minimum six batters over two innings.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM A gondola chair, according to furniture dictionaries, is a late 18th- to early 19th-century chair with a concave back and side rails that curve down to the seat. It has four legs and is upholstered on the seat and on both the front and back of the chair back and the arms. It is a chair type that still is being made. But there is another more glamorous “gondola chair” that is less-publicized. The antique Venetian gondola chair is carved and painted or upholstered in leather. It has a high back that curves down to the seat. The sides of the back continue forward to form arms that are attached to the seat by another curved support. It has four splayed legs that start at the seat and slant away from the chair. This type of chair was made in the 1800s and got its name from its shape. The chair looks a little like the front of an Italian gondola.

It may even have been a seat for a gondola passenger. The Venetian gondola chair is rare and even the leather-covered ones are expensive.

But a carved and painted example sells for thousands of dollars. Neal Auction in New Orleans sold one in 2014 for $1,917. *** Q: When I married in 1972, my mother gave me my grandmother’s dishes. There are 10 plates and one large serving plate. The large plate has a hand-painted rabbit on it. Two of the dinner plates are painted with rabbits, two with deer, two with gazelles, and two with cows. The backs of the plates are marked “LS & S, Limoges, France.” Are they worth anything?

A: This mark was used by Lazarus Straus & Sons, an importer and manufacturer in the United States.

Lazarus Straus was born in Germany, immigrated to the United States in 1852, and began working as a pushcart peddler in Georgia.

He opened a dry goods store there two years later. In 1869, he founded L. Straus & Sons in New York City.

The company sold its china and

glassware in Macy’s department store basement beginning in 1873.

Members of the Strauss family became part owners of Macy’s in 1884 and sole owners in 1896. You have most of a set of game plates made in Limoges, France, and imported

by L. Straus & Sons. These usually came with twelve plates plus a larger serving platter and were popular during the 1880s. Sets of game plates sell for about $375.

*** Q: I have a Dobro guitar that I got in 1956 when I was 10 years old. I think it’s a Rex Ampliphonic guitar or Dobro. I don’t know much about this guitar but some Dobro players have told me it’s definitely an antique.

A: Ampliphonic guitars, also known as self-amplifying or resonator guitars, were developed about 1927 by John Dopyera. He and his brothers founded Dobro Manufacturing Co. in 1928. In 1929, he was granted a patent for his design for a guitar with a thin metal body and three aluminum diaphrams (resonators) to amplify the sound.

Dobro guitars sold under several brand names in the 1930s. The Gibson Guitar Corporation has had sole rights to the Dobra name since 1993. Good quality old guitars sell for high prices. Find an expert at a shop that sells guitars or an auction house to find out what your guitar is worth. ** * Q: I have a Western-style working saddle made in the late 1890s or early 1900s by the Nebraska

This is a rare Venetian Gondola chair made in the 19th century. It’s carved and painted with gilt on a red background. The chair seat rests on a swivel “stool” that allows the sitter to turn around. Four legs make a solid base but they are at an angle to help to keep the tall chair from tipping. It sold at Neal Auction in New Orleans for $1,917 in 2014.

The design on the leather was done by hand and the stirrups have the original copper encasement around the bottom. The cinch, tie straps, stirrup hobbles and sheepskin under the saddle are new. During my first marriage, I started cheating seven months after our wedding. My wife knew about some of the affairs and stuck with me anyway. I finally felt so guilty for hurting her emotionally, I called it quits and married the last woman I cheated on her with.

My second marriage was in many ways better. I was able to remain faithful for more than three years before cheating again. I feel terrible that I have hurt another woman I loved, but I have now fallen in love with the woman I’m cheating with.

It’s like I’m in a perpetual cycle and don’t know how to stop.

I want this relationship to be my last one, but I’m scared to death I’ll end up cheating on her and let us both down.

Psychotherapy can treat borderline personality disorder Dear Doctor K: My daughter is in her 20s. She had a hard time during her teenage years and was recently diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Can you tell me what this is?

Dear Reader: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental health condition that involves poor self-image, a feeling of emptiness and great difficulty being alone. BPD is surprisingly common: About 6 percent of the U.S. population suffers from it at some point in their lifetime.

People with BPD have intense moods and unstable relationships.

They can be impulsive and have unsafe sex, drive dangerously, eat too much, drink too much and squander money.

Unfortunately, people with BPD are more likely than others to harm themselves. In fact, they are more likely than average to attempt or commit suicide.

We really don’t understand what causes BPD. Most doctors think that it, as with many psychiatric illnesses, is a combination of genes and life experience.

A person is born with a genetic vulnerability to develop the condition if he or she has certain life experiences. In particular, many teens and adults with BPD have experienced some form of abuse in childhood, including verbal,

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff physical or sexual abuse, as well as being separated from one or both parents.

A doctor will diagnose BPD when a person has had many of the following symptoms. The symptoms must be severe and be present for a long time: • Unstable, intense and difficult relationships; • Poor self-image; • Self-destructive, impulsive behavior; • Suicidal threats or attempts; • Self-mutilation; • Extreme mood reactions, including intense, inappropriate anger; • Feeling empty or alone; • Fear of abandonment; • Short-lived distortions of perception or belief. For example, a person may assume a friend or family member hates them. In fact, the person may be only mildly annoyed or angry.

Psychotherapy is a key part of treatment. But this treatment itself can present challenges because people with BPD tend either to idealize the therapist or become easily frustrated with them. As a

result, it may be difficult for them to sustain a relationship with a therapist.

Also, people with BPD may understand interpersonal problems or coping strategies on an intellectual level, but they may still be unable to successfully manage intense emotions.

Another approach helps people with BPD to look at issues from different points of view. It then encourages them to use what they learn to better manage their own feelings and behaviors.

Medication is another treatment option. No single drug clearly helps treat BPD; instead, medication is usually used to treat symptoms as they emerge.

A person with BPD may also need or benefit from extra support.

This may include a day-treatment program, live-in treatment, or group, couples or family therapy.

Most people experience at least some improvement in symptoms with treatment. Significant numbers even recover from the disorder. That means they no longer meet the criteria for having BPD, and they function well.

Dr. Wallace: I’m engaged to a guy that I first started dating when we were in the 11th grade together. He was very handsome and a star athlete. We have been out of school for two years.

I’m a food server at a four-star restaurant, and my fiance now works at a new car dealership as a salesperson.

We are planning a June wedding in Las Vegas, but I’m beginning to have second thoughts.

I don’t understand why some days he is wonderful and other days he is horrible. When he’s nice, he calls me sweetheart, but when he is horrible, you couldn’t print the names he calls me. Dr. Wallace: One day, my then-boyfriend and I were in my car and he was driving me home.

Suddenly the dialogue between us went sour and he said, “Well, if you don’t see things my way, then let’s just end it all right here together.”

He then put his head under the steering wheel and refused to guide the car. It all happened so unexpectedly that I was stunned. Luckily, I had the sense to grab the wheel and guide it as we traveled at 75 mph down a major highway. I pleaded with him to help me and

I now have realized that marrying Tony was a horrible decision, and I am in the process of getting a divorce. I’m writing this letter to tell teens that when you observe poor judgment, instability or signs of mental illness in the person you are dating, don’t take it lightly.
