OUT AND ABOUT Hope for Haitians 5K set in Geneva GENEVA – The third annual Hope for Haitians 5K Walk/ Run for Education is set for 8:30 a.m. May 10 at the Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva.

Awards ceremony will be at 10 a.m.

Dog jog and 5K to benefit animal control GENEVA – A dog jog and 5K run benefiting the Kane County Animal Control shelter is set for May 17 at the facility, 4060 Keslinger Road, Geneva. On site registration will be from 8 to 9:15 a.m., with the 5K run beginning at 9:30 a.m. Two dog limit per racer.

All dogs must be controlled and on a leash no longer than 6 feet.

No retractable leashes will be allowed. Water stations will be provided for runners and dogs.

St. Charles Fine Art Show coming up ST. CHARLES – The Downtown St. Charles Partnership presents the 16th annual St. Charles Fine Art Show from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 24 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 25.

Kostelny files for recount in judge race loss to Tegeler

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County Associate Judge Marmarie Kostelny has filed a petition for a discovery recount in the March 18 Republican primary.

Kostelny lost to Geneva attorney D.J. Tegeler by seven votes in the 16th.

Tegeler and Kostelny were both seeking a vacancy in the 16th Judicial Circuit, third sub-circuit that will be left by Judge Karen Simpson, who plans to retire Oct. 6. Associate judges are appointed, circuit judges are elected.

Kane County Clerk and the Aurora Election Commission gave Tegeler 6,220 votes to Kostelny’s 6,213. The totals were certified by the state board of elections, Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham said.

The discovery recount will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 5, May 6 and May 7 at the Kane County Clerk’s office, Building B in the Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva. A lunch period will be from noon to 1 p.m. each day.

Cunningham said they will recount a certain number of precincts within that sub-circuit.

“They will hand-count them through the paper trail. They

will take that paper trail and go through those votes, looking at bar codes to see how they voted,” Cunningham said. “The real problem here is with early voting. Some in the sub-circuit could have voted at the early voting sites. We have to find those ballots that were cast there.”

Cunningham said his staff would work three stations, one for regular voting, one for early votes and one for absentee and write-in votes.

Democrat and Republican judges will also participate, he said.

“I’m sure we’ll get through it,” Cunningham said.

Nearly 500 attend TriCity Family Services fundraising event

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Friends of TriCity Family Services hosted its 25th Annual Silver Linings Benefit and Auction fundraiser Saturday with a packed crowd of nearly 500 supporters at the Lincoln Inn Banquets in Batavia.

The annual event raises funds for the agency, which provides affordable counseling and other mental health services for children, teens and families, and never denies services based on an inability to pay. TriCity Family Services is in its 47th year.

“We are a family-centered mental health and wellness center,” said Jim DiCiaula of St. Charles, president of the TriCity Family Services board. “What’s important to me is the fact that we are reaching out, trying to reach our children and teens to identify mental health issues early in the journey, so that we really can help them ... and their families really adapt and not have to struggle as much as they can if you identify it early.

DiCiaula said mental health is on a spectrum and when people talk about mental health – they’re thinking about it on the far end – when it really should be on the front end.

“It’s common cold or the flu and we want to help them in the early stages to really make them

“We’ve really built awareness in the community about mental health and wellness. I was the co-chair of the [St. Charles] District 303 Mental Health Program. We partnered this year to really bring the awareness in our community and getting out there and talking to people about mental health and wellness,” DiCiaula said.

“I think this means there’s a lot more [people who] would

be here if they actually knew.

They’re responding to the call that we need to reach our kids and you don’t have to walk alone.”

The agency also presented three Golden Heart Awards to longtime philanthropic supporters Judy and Dudley Burgess, the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley and the Congregational Church of Batavia.

The award is given to individuals or couples, a company or foundation and a community group or organization, to recognize champions of compassionate, accessible mental health care in the Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles communities.

BATAVIA – As the new executive director of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce, Holly Deitchman said she wants to make the organization even more of a resource for local businesses.

“We have lots to offer to the community and we want to continue to offer so much more,” Deitchman said to members of the Batavia United Methodist Church Sunday.

Deitchman spoke as part of the church’s monthly program to have different community members or organizations speak at the church.

The program began in January.

Deitchman started as the Batavia chamber’s executive director in February after the resignation of Roger Breisch, who lead the chamber for almost 10 years. She had been the station manager of BATV since July 2008.

A Batavia resident for 12 years, Deitchman has been involved in the community since moving here.

“I definitely wanted to be a person that was part of the community, not just a resident,” she said.

As the Batavia Chamber’s new executive director, Deitchman said she hopes the chamber can provide even more networking opportunities for local businesses.

Knights ‘can’t complain’ after rolling to title

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Luis Acosta perked his ears and grinned at the announcement that he and three Kaneland boys track teammates had collaborated on the fastest 4x800-meter relay time in Illinois this spring.

Covering the race in 7:50.27 not only garnered a state superlative, but also gave Andrew Lesak, Acosta, Kyle Carter and Nathaniel Kucera the meet record in the host Knights’ Peterson Prep Invitational.

Ultimate satisfaction, however, projects as a prize to be gained later, even as the quartet competed together for the first time this season Saturday.

“That’s an amazing time, and I feel we could have gone even faster,” Acosta said.

For the moment, Kucera kept a more level head.

“Can’t complain,” he said.

The victory was one of six overall for the Knights, who honored the front of their Nike hoodies (“KANELAND NEVER STOPS”) and weeklong Twitter hashtag (#DefendPete) to comfortably take the 17-team invite with 140 points.

Runner-up DeKalb followed with 66 points. Batavia (61, fourth); Geneva (44, fifth) and Wheaton Academy (tied for 13th, 10) also competed.

With the Kane County meet looming in two weeks and the Class 2A state series on tap shortly thereafter, there’s no doubt the Knights’ morale is riding high, even if that’s not always on outward display.

“Yeah, it’s really unspoken,” senior hurdles double-winner Brock Robertson said. “We usually don’t say too much about the meets, we just work hard throughout practice and things come through to meet day.”

Batavia closed the meet by edging Kaneland in the 4x400, with Bulldogs’ anchor David Curnock withstanding Kucera’s late charge.

Blake Crowder, Peyton Piron and Jorden Berendt built a nice cushion, helping Batavia finish in 3:27.06. The result certainly energized the ride home.

“Going in with a good attitude, you’ve got that ‘We can do this, we can win’ [mentality],” Crowder said. “That really pumps us up, and we just like to go and compete.”

Batavia’s Mark Majka (6 feet, 4 inches) and Mark Rudelich (6-3) finished second and third in the high jump.

“You don’t really feel it too much in the race because you kind of feel adrenaline,” Roels said.

as the team displayed great depth. Nate Dyer captured both throwing events – 52-8 in the shot put, 162-9.5 in the discus – while Robertson, an emerging senior, also doubled up.

Smooth starts propelled Robertson to victories in the 110 hurdles (15.75) and 300 hurdles (40.3).

Fanella went 42/3 innings to earn the win for Geneva, allowing seven runs, including the two South Elgin homers.

Plocinski was solid in relief for Geneva, throwing 21/3 scoreless innings, striking out four.

Rylie Porretto went 4 for 5 with 2 RBI while Jenelle Reilly was a perfect 4 for 4 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Kieth added a pair of singles, two RBI’s and two runs scored.

By THOMAS DELVES editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Playing through dropping temperatures and a stiff wind, the Batavia girls soccer team defeated visiting West Chicago, 7-1, in a lopsided Upstate Eight Conference crossover game.

Batavia sophomore Megan McEachern and senior Brooke LeFevre netted two goals each and junior forward Karina Rosales added a goal and assist.

The game started with a flurry of scoring that began with West Chicago sophomore Marcy Gonzalez.

After Batavia gave the Wildcats two early corner kicks, Gonzalez punched one by freshman goalkeeper Jenny Scara, one of three Batavia goals in the

first six minutes of the game.

The Wildcats’ early goal was the only real threat to Batavia.

The Bulldogs then scored seven unanswered goals.

Batavia moved to 6-6-1 on the season and capitalized on its scoring chances. Coach Mark Gianfrancesco credited his team’s calm demeanor.

“We work a lot on staying composed,” Gianfrancesco said. “The girls stayed focused and kept going at it.”

Batavia freshman Mackenzie Foster found the ball at her feet a few times during first half and scored the go-ahead goal in the fifth minute.

West Chicago coach Cesar Gomez did not want to use any excuses, but said seven of the Wildcats’ starters were injured and unable to play in Satur-

day’s match.

“It’s one of those games that hopefully they will learn something from it, I know I will learn something from it and come back from it. We have a game Tuesday and hopefully [we can] recover,” Gomez said.

Wildcats goalie Itza Salazar was able to make some key saves in the second half, but the offense never found its stride with so many missing starters.

Batavia on the other hand used accurate short and long passes to spring forwards for open looks. “[We] had a lot of movement up top and dropping balls [back],” Rosales said of the offense.

Batavia hosts Geneva in a crucial conference game Tuesday night.

GENEVA – Saturday morning was not the right day to be a pitcher. In Geneva’s 15-7 win against South Elgin, both teams combined for 36 hits as pitchers from both sides struggled to get outs.

The Vikings’ first six hitters combined to get on base in 22 of their 27 plate appearances as Geneva (10-4, 5-2 Upstate Eight Conference River Division) banged out 19 hits. Every Vikings player in the lineup reached base in some form.

Anna Geary led the Geneva offensive outburst from the leadoff spot, going 3 for 3 with a pair of walks and an RBI while scoring four times. Geary walked and scored in the first and second innings before singling and scoring in the fourth and fifth. The junior’s RBI double in the sixth capped a near-perfect offensive day for the Vikings.

“Both teams hit really well as you can see by the score, 157,” Geary said. “As the leadoff hitter, I’m just trying to get on base, just get on so someone can get me over. It was

really important for us to get ahead and keep it up the whole game.”

South Elgin (8-10, 1-5) pulled within 5-4 after scoring four runs in the third off Geneva starter Rachel Fanella. Backto-back home runs from Mallory Mecklenburg and Cassidy Westlund pulled the Storm within a run.

But Geneva’s offense responded in the bottom of the inning as Fanella’s two-run single pushed the Vikings’ lead to 7-4. Four more hits in the Geneva fourth tacked on four more runs as RBI hits from Molly Wrenn and Jenelle Reilly helped the Vikings take an 11-4 lead.

“We put the entire emphasis of our pre-game talk on starting fast. We’ve been falling behind in games on a regular basis and it certainly makes a big difference to score early,” Geneva coach Greg Dierks said. “We scored in every inning – we had two or more in every inning. We’re certainly capable of hitting from the top to the bottom of the order and I’m thrilled with the way we played.”

Strong or weak jump shifts?

Partner opens, say, one heart, the next player passes, and you respond two spades.

What are you showing?

There are typically two answers to that question: a weak or strong hand.

A weak jump shift shows a six-card suit and some 4-8 highcard points. But this week, let’s look at the strong variety.

In the old days, a strong jump shift promised 17-19 points. However, it is much better to use a 13-16-point range: sufficient to insist on game, but then wanting partner to decide whether to go higher. (More on why tomorrow.)

The responder has one of two hand-types: an excellent one-suiter with six or more cards in his suit, or a good two-suiter with five or six cards in his own suit and four or five in partner’s suit. With the two-suiter, he rebids in partner’s suit. With the one-suiter, responder does something else, usually rebidding in his suit or in no-trump.

In this deal, South learns all about his partner’s hand and should have no trouble settling into seven no-trump. After West leads the diamond queen, how should declarer play?

South can count 14(!) tricks via five spades, five hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. The only danger is a 4-0 spade break.

But declarer can avoid a loser whatever the position as long as he starts with dummy’s ace (or king). This keeps one high honor in each hand to capture an opponent’s lower honor (the jack). South can finesse either way to stop that jack from taking a trick.
