No injuries after garage fire; officials probe cause KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Officials are investigating a fire that caused an estimated $1,500 in damages to an attached garage Saturday morning, according to fire officials.

No one was injured in the incident. Fire crews received at 10 a.m. Saturday a report of a garage fire. The garage is attached to a single-family home in the 5N900 block of Route 25 in St. Charles Town-

ship, according to a news release from the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District.

Upon arrival at 10:04 a.m.

Saturday, firefighters saw a fire in some materials in front of the attached garage, the release states. The flames had spread to the garage. The homeowner was attempting to control it.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, according to the release. The fire was confined to the group of materials in front of the garage and

the front garage wall, according to the release.

The fire was under control by 10:07 a.m. Saturday, the release states. The provided damage estimate was $1,000 of property damage and $500 of damage to the contents.

The home’s occupant was alerted to the fire by a visitor who saw the fire outside, the release states.

The fire district urges residents to use care in storing materials close to exterior walls of their homes or other structures.

Elburn resident, motorcycle enthusiast gets one last ride

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Kevin Knight didn’t care what it took – when the weather improved, he wanted to take his 1977 Harley-Davidson Low Rider back out on the road.

Knight, 56, bought the Low Rider when he was 20 years old and had loved motorcycles ever since, his wife Cathy said.

He never made it back onto his bike, but Knight’s family still made sure he would have one last ride.

Knight, of Elburn, died April 20 after battling a rare type of pancreatic cancer. His casket Saturday was placed into a glass-enclosed hearse and pulled by a three-wheeled Harley Davidson Road King to his final resting place in Oak Hill Cemetery in Geneva.

The motorcycle hearse, known as The Farewell Ride, is offered by Krause Funeral Home in Milwaukee. It was delivered to Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main St., St. Charles, for Kevin Knight’s service.

“It was really amazing that they were able to get something like that,” Cathy Knight said of the funeral home.

“I tried to plan everything around what he would like.”

The Farewell Ride’s last appearance at Yurs Funeral Homes was at least 15 years ago, general manage John Krumm said. Krumm thought of the special hearse when Kevin Knight’s family made funeral arrangements.

Along with his love of motorcycles, Kevin Knight would love to share his knowledge of operating and wrestling, Cathy Knight said. Kevin Knight was a member of Local No. 150 Operators Union and worked for Waste Management for more than 30 years, according to his obituary.

coach students in the Kaneland Knights Wrestling Club.

Tony Knight, 26, said his father would take him to wrestling and baseball practices on the 1977 Low Rider. On Saturday, he rode his father’s bike behind the motorcycle hearse along with friends and family on three other Harley Davidson motorcycles.

Tony Knight said he and his father had their differences in the past, but his father was probably the nicest guy he’d ever met.

“He’d always try to put a smile on everyone’s face,” Tony Knight said.

Kick scooter parade falls short of record

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Randy Simonian did not make his goal of setting a world record for the largest kick scooter parade on Saturday, but he said they had fun trying.

The event was set in a two-mile route through downtown Batavia.

“We had 180 kick scooters [and] the whole thing took less than 30 minutes,” Simonian, of Batavia, said. “We didn’t come close to breaking the world record [but] we had a blast. It was horrible. It was raining. It was cold. Everyone was wet. … It really was fun. Really, really fun.”

Simonian had hoped for at least 1,000 participants to break the 2013 Guinness World Record for 489 participants in a kick scooter parade in New Zealand.

The $5 entry fee was to raise money for Batavia United Way, which raises funds for programs that directly benefit Batavians. It was also to support CHIP IN Batavia, which supports students in temporary or transitioning housing situations, or who face poverty in Batavia.

The total raised for the charities has not been determined yet, he said.

Simonian said he was always fascinated by Guinness World Records.

“I was interested in the guy with the longest fingernails, the world’s fastest human, the guy with the longest mustache – ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been intrigued,” Simonian said. “I was trying to think of a way to raise money for homeless kids and people in need.”

But this first-time scooter effort will not be the last, Simonian said, as he is thinking of how to combine Batavia’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration with another shot at a world record.

“There’s 15,000 people who come out for fireworks,” Simonian said. “One of the biggest costs for one of these events is the police, the paramedics and the porta potties.”

Six porta potties for Saturday’s event cost $600, he said. If he can dovetail another try at a world record kick scooter parade where a lot of people will be gathered, and where porta potties, police and paramedic costs are already covered, it might have a better shot.

“It would be mostly kids doing it,” Simonian said.

“Parents would be carrying coolers, and kids could be carrying scooters.”

“I still have a pending application” to the Guinness World Record, he said.

“We can make 20 attempts to break it.”

Staci Jancauskas played in the game for the first time on Saturday to represent her father, Batavia Fire Battalion Chief Ed Jancauskas, who watched from the stands.

“It was a blast,” Staci Jancauskas said of the game.

“I think a lot more people should come out and support it. It’s a fun event, I would do it again.”

BATAVIA – A fire at a candle manufacturing company in Batavia caused minor injuries to a firefighter and resulted in $1 million in damage to the building, a fire official said.

An automatic fire alarm alerted firefighters to come to Candle Corporation of America, 601 Kingsland Drive, in an industrial district on the city’s east side shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday, according to a statement from Batavia Fire Department officials.

Property records show the building, at nearly 500,000 square feet, is owned

by PartyLite Worldwide Inc., which also owns 603 and 605 Kingsland.

Fire crews encountered fire and heavy smoke conditions in the manufacturing area of the building. The long distance to reach the seat of the fire, and the layout of large pieces of equipment combined with zero visibility conditions contributed to the difficulty in initial extinguishment, officials said.

BATAVIA – The return of an annual basketball game Saturday in Batavia ended with a victory for some teachers.

The Batavia Public School District 101 educators won, 79-60, in the Books vs. Badges game held in the Batavia High School main gym, 1201 Main St., Batavia.

Each team had at least nine players for the charity game, with the Badges team consisting of Batavia police and fire personnel.

The Books vs. Badges basketball game previously took place every year to raise money for the city’s Fourth of July fireworks show, which is funded solely through donations.

One of the players on the Badges team, Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker, wanted to revive the charity game this year to benefit CASA Kane County.

Saturday’s game likely raised between $500 and $750, said Lori Hewitt, CASA Kane County’s director of development.

About 100 people – mostly adults – attended the game for a $5 admission and children, adults and seniors paid $3. CASA Kane County also made $110 from a 50/50 raffle and will receive half the proceeds from concessions sold during the game, Hewitt said.

CASA Kane County recruits, trains and supervises community volunteers who serve as court-appointed special advocates – or CASAs – for children who are in court because of abuse, neglect or private guardianship.

CASA Kane County does not receive any state or federal funding, so its annual budget comes from grants, private donations and events like Saturday’s game, Hewitt said.

Because of hazardous conditions and very flammable materials in the building, the process of shutting down electrical equipment took some time, according to the statement.

The fire caused significant damage to the building and the contents. A partial roof collapse above the fire area left that part of the building very dangerous, according to the statement.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and was released after treatment and several others were monitored at the scene for signs of exhaustion, a fire official said.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation, fire officials said in a statement.

Local departments that assisted Batavia fire crews at the scene included Fermilab, Geneva, North Aurora, South Elgin, St. Charles, Warrenville and West Chicago.

North Stars goalie Claire Rich recorded three saves, including a big one with 1:49 left in the match to complete a second-half shutout and give North (16-4-1) the win. The North Stars starters combined for 20 steals in the match, a point of emphasis for coach Nick Engel.

“They played much better in the second half. We shored up our defense, which is what we pride ourselves on. Once you start playing good defense, it really does lead to the offensive end.”

Offensively, three North Stars recorded hat tricks: Monica Guyett, Katie Difiglio and Katie Quinn.

Quinn gave North the lead with 21 seconds left in the first quarter and quickly tallied her second goal in the opening minute and a half of the second quarter.

Guyett tallied her first two goals less than a minute apart by driving to the front of the net and relying on her teammates to get her the ball.

All week, the Bulls players have talked about the unique problems the Bucks’ defense offers, not only because of their length and athleticism, but their tendencies. They’ve been double-teaming Pau Gasol on almost every post pass, and blitzing both Derrick Rose and Jimmy Butler on pick-androlls.

“Their biggest strength is their defense and the way they turn you over,” Dunleavy said.

“There’s not a lot of teams in the league that play the way they do. There’s usually a common recipe the way you do things, and they do things a little differently.

“They’ve got some unique players and present some problems, and that’s probably the biggest reason they’re the sixth seed in the playoffs and had such a great year, so that’s kind of what they do.”

Thibodeau wasn’t in a agreeable mood on that front, either.

“We’ve seen plenty of blitzes before,” Thibodeau said.

“That’s not anything new.

They’re switching the smallsmall. That’s not new. We’re seeing more post double-teams than usual. But usually when a post guy gets hot, he gets doubled. So that’s not new.”

What Thibodeau and his players did agree on was that even with all the mistakes, they still had a chance to win the game. They also feel good about entering Game 5 up, 3-1, in the best-of-seven series, with a chance for the home closeout.

“Look, the reality is we didn’t play very well but had the ball with 20 seconds left and a chance to win the game,” Dunleavy said. “You have the ball in that position? We did a lot of things right. We just got to correct the things we didn’t do right.”

Waite has had the Midas touch with Blackhawks goalies In the seven agonizing days in between appearances for Corey Crawford last week, the Blackhawks’ once and future No. 1 goaltender was one of the first ones on the ice before morning skates and one of the last ones off. He hit the ice with his fellow lineup outsiders on off days. And goaltending coach Jimmy Waite was out there with him every moment.

What did the two work on?

“Stopping the puck,” Crawford deadpanned.

Of course, that’s easier said than done. Waite is part goalie coach, part mental coach – maybe nudging Crawford’s glove an inch here or there, while gently nudging Crawford’s confidence in the right direction after he gave up nine goals in his first four periods of the playoffs.

All this, while keeping rookie Scott Darling on top of his game during his whirlwind first series, and working with Antti Raanta on the side, just in case.

“Jimmy had a good plan coming into this season with his goaltenders,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “I think he developed a good relationship with all of them.”

What that plan is, nobody really knows. Quenneville generally stays out of goaltender affairs – when he benched Crawford for Game 3, it was Waite who delivered the news – and forbids all of his assistant coaches from talking with reporters. The three goalies demur when asked for specifics.

And even Waite’s older brother, Stephane – who was the Hawks’ goalie coach for 10 years before taking the same job with the Montreal Canadiens – declined to be interviewed out of respect, reluctant to discuss another team’s goalies while both teams are still in the playoffs.

Here’s what we do know: Whatever Waite is doing, it’s working. In his first season as an NHL goalie coach, replacing Steve Weeks, who was fired af-

ter just one season, Waite has had the Midas touch. Crawford enjoyed the best full season of his career. Darling was a year removed from the ECHL, yet Waite managed to harness his 6-6 frame into a positionally sound, confident goalie who briefly usurped the No. 1 job in the playoffs for a Stanley Cup contender. And Raanta had the best save percentage and goalsagainst average in the league back in February when he lost his backup job to the surging Darling.

“That’s why he’s here,” Darling said. “He’s an unbelievable goalie mind. He’s been good for me, because I ask a lot of questions and I want to be prepared when I’m ready to go. He’s been huge for me, working on fine-tuning some parts of my game. I do feel like I’ve gotten better since the beginning of the season.”

Much of it is preparation.

The biggest save of Darling’s career – getting his toe on Ryan Ellis’ backdoor one-timer on a third-period power play in

Game 1 against Nashville – was as much about preparation as skill. Mike Kitchen pointed out that the Predators liked to make that pass during penalty-kill meetings, and Waite drove the point home repeatedly after that. Darling knew where to be before it even happened.

“Yeah, I mean, we don’t just

show up and play games,” Darling said. “There’s a lot that goes into being ready for these games.”

A keen eye for the nuances of goaltending goes a long way, too. Waite doesn’t make wholesale changes. But an inch or two here or there can make all the difference.

CHICAGO – It sure didn’t look good live in Game 4 up in Milwaukee on Saturday night.

Watching the film Sunday morning at the Advocate Center did little to change that.

Then again, there isn’t enough lipstick to make 28 turnovers pass for anything resembling beauty.

“When you turn it over 28 times, there’s some pretty amazing ways to do it,” Bulls veteran Mike Dunleavy said after the afternoon practice.

“At some point you start becoming creative. It was pretty amazing the way we turned it over. Hopefully, we fix it.

“Just take care of the ball.

I mean I can’t tell you anything else we’re not doing well other than we’re turning the ball over too many times.

That’s gotta be the thing that changes, and if we do that and

we get back in transition and don’t give up 38 or 40 fast-break points, then we feel like we have a pretty good chance of winning.”

And as far as Tom Thibodeau using all the ball security miscues for a light-hearted teaching moment going into tonight’s Game 5 at the United Center? Well, did people forget who the coach was?

Not only did Thibodeau have his players watch the film on the turnovers in the 92-90 loss, but watch all 28 of them.

“Is that a serious question?”

Dunleavy responded, when asked whether his coach doctored the film with some comedic moments.

And if Thibodeau wasn’t in a warm, fuzzy place for the film session, it wasn’t like he turned that frown upside down meeting with the media.

“Well, in general, we looked at all our turnovers and some were their defense and some

Dear Abby: My brother is older than I am and has been in and out of prison. He has stolen my things and pawned them.

I am married, and my husband and I are expecting our first child. We live in a time zone several hours behind the one my family is in. I am now receiving phone calls at 4 o’clock in the morning from collection agencies on the hunt for my brother. He has been writing bad checks and leaving my phone number as a contact number.

I have managed to determine who his probation officer is, and I’m on the fence about whether I should tell her what he is up to. My dad is furious with me for even considering it since “brothers and sisters don’t do that to each other.”

Honestly, I am fed up with this “blood is thicker than water” mentality when it comes to my brother’s wrongdoings. He is now including my family in his schemes, and I won’t stand for it any longer. What should I do? –

Students sometimes ask, “I find discarding difficult. What should I do?”

The naive answer is: Throw losers and keep winners. But discards should send information to partner. If you are pitching from a suit not yet led by either side, your card is an attitude signal – as in this deal.

South opens and closes the auction with three spades. West starts the defense with three rounds of hearts. East plays high-low to show his doubleton, but what should he discard at trick three?

Assuming the third heart is standing up, South presumably has 7-3-2-1, 7-3-1-2, 7-3-3-0 or 7-3-0-3 shape. In the first three cases, East wants partner to shift to a diamond at trick four, not a club. (And in the last, a club shift is vital only if South has exactly queen-doubleton of clubs.) The club ace can wait, but the diamond king needs to be established. So, East should discard the diamond nine. He could throw the club four, but if you can afford to, it is better to signal with a high, encouraging card than with a low, discouraging card.

If West shifts to a diamond, the contract fails. If he leads a club, though, declarer gets his diamond loser away on dummy’s club king, with the spade king as the dummy entry.
