Going through concealed-carry class EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Gresey In December, I received an email from GAT Guns in East Dundee with the subject line: “VIP Introduction to Concealed Carry.”

The email went out to members of the media and included an invitation for journalists to attend an event where they could learn about the state’s new concealed-carry law.

Knowing that we would be writing more about that topic (the Kane County Chronicle launched a two-day series about concealed carry Friday), photo editor Sandy Bressner and I decided to take advantage of the offer. And in early January, there we were, signing in at an actual training class for those seeking concealed-carry licenses.

We spent about eight hours at GAT Guns that day, learning about the new law, firearm safety, various concealed-carry holsters and other related topics.

I thought the discussions on how to properly handle concealed firearms were incredibly interesting. During one part of the training, the instructors spoke about the importance of practicing – over and over – how to unholster a weapon and prepare to shoot it.

Participants in the class practiced this maneuver many times with their own – unloaded – weapons. It was easy to observe how important

As a side lesson of sorts during the class, Sandy and I learned about different types of guns and ammunition from Paul Warren, the owner of Safe Side Tactical and a sergeant with the Kane County Sheriff ’s Office.

Paul then took Sandy and me to the shooting range at GAT Guns, where we were able to practice the concealed-carry shooting test.

It was the first time that Sandy or I had ever shot a gun.

(Although my dad and I used to practice target shooting with a BB gun when I was younger.)

We both would have passed the concealed-carry shooting test. The experience really got our blood pumping.

I asked Sandy this week what she learned from our concealed-carry training experience.

“I took away the respect that law enforcement has for gun control and their ability to convey that to a class to keep that respect going and to know that this doesn’t make Illinois an open shooting range,” she

said. “It makes it so safety is the No. 1 concern.”

Traffic signal at WCC operational KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com SUGAR GROVE – A new traffic signal at the north entrance of Waubonsee Community College became operational Friday.

The signal was established on Route 47 at the school’s Sugar Grove campus.

It is at a location near where two North Aurora teenagers – Ryan Sherrod, 18, and Brandon Utley, 19, were killed in a 2010 car crash. School officials issued a news release Friday that stated college leaders were pausing to remember the students.

“While the completion of this project is a significant milestone, we continue

to feel the loss of Brandon Utley and Ryan Sherrod,” Waubonsee President Christine Sobek said, according to the release. “Our thoughts remain with their family and friends, and we thank those who have expressed their ongoing support.”

The release stated Waubonsee officials have advocated for the new signal and worked with the Illinois Department of Transportation to enhance safety at the north entrance.

“We remain committed to the safety of our entire college community and are thankful to have partnered with IDOT and many others, whose assistance and permission made this safety enhancement possible,” Sobek said.

The Government Operations Committee on Monday unanimously voted in favor of recommending a sales tax revenue sharing agreement for SC Main 3800 LLC, the property owners of the Charlestowne Mall. Developer and property manager The Krausz Companies Inc. is representing the group.

The property owners worked with city staff to develop the agreement, which involves a 5050 split of the new sales tax revenue generated once the redeveloped mall actually opens. While the plan still is in development, the city will continue to retain all of the sales tax revenue re-

ceived from the mall, said Rita Tungare, director of community and economic development.

The 50-50 split of the new sales tax revenue would last for 20 years, or until the developers receive $20 million in reimbursements, whichever comes first.

The developer is not receiving any initial cash handout of this money, Tungare said Friday.

“There is no up-front risk to the city,” Tungare said. “This incentive is to offset the extraordinary costs that a redevelopment of this magnitude would have.”

There are $12 million in extra construction costs to regrade, demolish and update the mall, according to the city’s executive summary of the agreement. The developer also estimates the cost of bringing in and retaining tenants to be $10 million.

The city’s willingness to work together is a crucial part of the plan, said Jay Krigsman, executive vice president of The Krausz Companies.

The existing mall building has to be reconstructed, at a high cost, to something that meets the current retail market, including open spaces and expansive views, Krigsman said.

The revenue sharing will provide a return for the investors and lenders behind the redevelopment, he said.

The Krausz Companies purchased the mall property for more than $9.5 million in November. The company plans to rename the mall The Quad St. Charles and recreate its appearance by late 2015 to a neighborhood feeling and include patio dining outside.

The St. Charles City Council likely will vote on the revenue sharing agreement May 5, Tungare said.

Three Batavia youngsters honored as top cookie sellers

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The bitterly cold winter created some harsh conditions for Girl Scout Katie Casey as she went door-to-door selling Girl Scout cookies.

“It’s not fun when it’s 9 degrees out,” the Batavia resident said.

But she persevered, and ended up selling 1,500 boxes of cookies, making her one of the top 15 cookie sellers for 2014 for the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois council.

She is one of three Batavia youngsters to make the list.

Grace Beem and Kelly Thoman also sold 1,500 boxes each. All three girls are part of Girl Scout Troop 4825, which is based out of J.B. Nelson Elementary School in Batavia.

sey, Katie’s mother, is proud of their accomplishments.

“The girls do it themselves,” she said. “The girls are the ones doing the selling. They are pretty proud of themselves, and they should be, too.”

The troop collectively sold 5,178 boxes of cookies. Along with making door-to-door sales, the troop manned a booth at several stores in the area.

In order to draw more customers to the booth, the troop got creative and accented its booth with an Easy Bake oven, a homemade Girl Scout cookie recipe box and custom cookie wands made with ribbon to represent each Girl Scout cookie type the troop was selling.

Kelly Thoman said she spent the weekends selling, so she could make her goal.

“It was really cold,” she

said. “We had to stand out in the cold for hours during booth sales.”

In the spirit of cooperation, Katie and Kelly stopped selling after they had reached their goals and helped Grace to reach hers.

One woman donated $80 – or 20 boxes – to get Grace closer to her goal, but the woman didn’t take the boxes, suggesting instead they be donated to the Lazarus House homeless shelter in St. Charles or the St. Charles fire station, Casey said.

The girls ended up donating 10 boxes to Lazarus House and 10 boxes to the St. Charles fire station.

Grace said she sold “every day it was possible.”

“It definitely wasn’t easy,” she said. “It was hard work.

I’ve never sold more than 1,000 boxes before. It was a big leap in cookies.”

ST. CHARLES – Two South Elgin nursing aides face additional charges in connection to a reported elder abuse case at their former St. Charles employer, according to court documents.

Jacqueline Santos and Chemyra Barnett, both 18, were indicted April 16.

The indictment contains two new counts for Santos and Barnett – abuse of a long-term care facility resident, a class 3 felony, and dissemination of an unauthorized video recording.

The two other counts in their indictment are aggravated battery, a class 3 felony, and unauthorized video recording, a class 4 felony.

The counts supersede the initial battery and unautho-

standard motion for discovery for police statements, evidence, a witness list and more in connection to the charges.

Santos’ attorney Timothy P. Martin filed a standard motion for discovery during March 27, her last court appearance.

Santos and Barnett are accused of hitting a 97-yearold woman in the face with a nylon strap and making a video recording of the incident, according to court documents. Police said the incident occurred March 11 at the Rosewood Care Center in St. Charles, where Santos and Barnett worked as certified nursing aides.

They were terminated after the incident.

Santos is next scheduled to appear in court May 8, according to court records. Barnett’s next court date is May 28.

How local police are handling concealed carry

t. Charles Deputy Police Chief David Kintz said he doesn’t think the state’s new concealed-carry law will create many problems for law enforcement agencies.

“Politics aside, I think most officers are OK with the new law, when obviously all other 49 states have been able to implement this,” Kintz said. “Generally, those that

comply with the law are not the ones that the police department are worried about.”

The Kane County Chronicle is exploring the impact of the state’s new concealed-carry law.

Kintz doesn’t see the law putting police officers at risk when they don’t know whether someone is carrying a concealed weapon.

“We treat every call that we go on as a call that has a

person with a gun, and first and foremost, it’s us,” Kintz said. “So, tactically, there’s always a weapon present, and we don’t treat it any differently when we show up and you have one or you don’t have one.”

Those who have a concealed weapon must reveal that fact to police if asked.

“Obviously, there’s a couple of steps that we’re going to take ahead of time,” Kintz said. “Just like we run your driver’s license, we

can run to see if you have a concealed-carry license. So, a lot of times we’ll be checking and know even beforehand.”

But Kintz admitted he is not concerned about those who have gone through the licensing process.

“It’s the ones who don’t get the license that are carrying the firearm, those are the ones that I worry about,” he said. “In other words, the criminal who doesn’t get the license isn’t going to tell me he has a firearm. But obvi-

Not everyone feels the new law is a good idea, including Tony Malay, an instructor at Batavia School District 101 and president of the Batavia Education Association. He said efforts should have been on more gun control following the Sandy Hook school shooting in December 2012 that claimed the lives of 20 students and six adults.

about whether to adopt the state’s concealed-carry law as written or to make it more restrictive. The county is considering adopting a policy that states employees may not carry concealed firearms in any county building or vehicle.

Under the proposed policy, they also would be prohibited from carrying a concealed firearm in their private vehicle while in the course of their employment with the county. The policy would not apply to county employees authorized to carry a concealed firearm.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen has voiced concerns that the proposed policy would be asking employees to give up their right to self-defense while coming and going from work. Already, he said, employees have shared concerns about the no-gun signs posted on county buildings.

“We are labeling ourselves as unprotected or undefended,” Lauzen said during a recent meeting.

Businesses have the right to do so under the state’s new concealed-carry law.

If those business owners encounter someone who is trying to bring a firearm into their business, St. Charles Deputy Police Chief David Kintz advised them to call police rather than try to deal with the situation themselves.

“They should call 911 and let us come and respond and take care of that,” Kintz said. “We don’t encourage anyone to take those matters into their own hands and try and pat someone down or check. Just give us a call. And obviously that’s what our officers are trained to handle.”

“Those who go through the concealed-carry license class know what locations do not allow concealed carry,” Kintz said. “Some of the locations are already prohibited, whether a sign is posted there or not.”

That includes bars. For example, a no-gun sign is prominently displayed at the entrance to McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub in St. Charles. McNally’s general manager Shay Clarke said that it “scares” him to think that someone might try to carry a gun into the establishment.

“In Ireland, people generally don’t have guns,” said Clarke, who is originally from that country. “Soldiers have guns. It’s a different society.”

Geneva resident Brian Maher said he feels that the only type of businesses that should post the signs are bars.

“If you put this sign up, the only people that you are affecting are the people that you don’t have to worry about,” Maher said. “The people who brought in guns illegally before aren’t going to be stopped by a sign. The criminals don’t pay any attention to laws.”

Maher is a gun owner.

He is happy that Illinois is now letting residents carry concealed weapons.

“Thank God that Illinois finally joined the other 49 states that have had concealed carry for many years,” Maher said. “That punk doesn’t know if the 78-year-old woman has a gun in her purse, or the 21-year-old girl has a gun in her purse. Everybody’s safer, whether you choose to carry or not.”

of the establishment’s gross receipts within the prior three months is from the sale of alcohol.”

Businesses and other places that want to prohibit concealed carry are required to post signs approved by the Illinois State Police. The signs depict a gun circled in red with a slash through the center, similar to a no-smoking sign.

Malay also is concerned that the no-gun signs put additional stress on students as they walk into their schools.

“That’s a reminder right at eye level for a child to be reminded he needs to be fearful of guns in this society, especially at school,” Malay said. “The protection that he’s getting is a sign that’s on the door, and that’s supposed to stop someone? It creates more stress for the children, but it is indicative of bigger problems in our society that we can’t protect our children.”

What measures have been taken to protect our children? Oh, we put a sign on the door. That’s the measure we took. It’s ludicrous.”

Among the places where guns are banned under the new concealed-carry law are schools, child care facilities, government buildings, courts, correctional facilities, hospitals, mental health facilities, nursing homes, public transportation, airports, public playgrounds, parks and athletic facilities.

Not all types of grubs are created equal Grubs are not created equal.

These beetle larvae, found in a load of hardwood mulch, are decomposers. They perform the important role of converting dead plant material into nutrients that help living plants thrive.

GOOD NATURED Pam Otto The English language contains some pretty lovely sounding words: Ebullience.

Effervescent.

Epiphany.

Each term features a delectable combination of vowels and consonants that virtually sparkle as they roll off the tongue, bringing with them emotions and images that are bright and uplifting.

Then we have the opposite end of the spectrum. Heavy and dull, these words are the verbal equivalent of road apples landing on pavement: Phlegm.

Dung.

And the topic of this week’s commentary: Grub.

Actually, make that grubs, plural. A whole heaping, writhing mess of ’em.

I wish you could have heard the tone of Joan Kramer’s voice when she called to tell me of her squirmy, wriggly find. Amid clucks of disgust, with a slight undercurrent of fear, she asked, “There isn’t any reason, is there, that you’d want grubs?”

Now, let us not forget, Joan is no nature newbie.

Over her years of tending the native plant demonstration garden at the Pottawatomie Community Center, she has seen literally hundreds of species of plants and animals in all stages of life. And with the exception of a few types of invasive nonnatives (and snakes, but that’s another story), she has been quite tolerant of them all.

But grubs, for Joan, crossed a line. Because, let’s face it, their reputation is less than stellar.

What instar, or insect life stage, gets blamed for destroying lawns? Grubs.

Which insect life form is reviled by farmers and gardeners everywhere? Grubs.

Plus, they have that awful, clunky-sounding name.

So there was poor Joan, alone in the garden, facing a mound of hardwood mulch

from which she’d unearthed not just one or two, but rather dozens of grubs.

The very animal for which the insecticide GrubEx was created.

If she spread the infested mulch throughout the garden, would she risk the demise of all the plants there?

The plants she has coaxed and tended year after year?

The plants that serve as a learning resource native landscaping enthusiasts throughout the region?

The simple answer is: No. And my equally easy answer to Joan’s question of whether I’d have use for the grubs is: Yes. Yes! A thousand times yes!

Because grubs – as horrid a reputation as they may have – are not created equal.

Sure there are those that devour plant roots. (In the bigger scheme of ecosystem health, this is an important niche, even though it makes them unpopular with farmers and gardeners.)

But then there are those grubs that you can think of as “the good guys.” Like the hero that rides into town wearing a white hat, these pale-colored, soft-bodied lar-

vae of various beetle species have an important job to do: They help dead wood decompose.

Gifted with chewing mouthparts and a wonderfully complex digestive system, these little jewels turn tough, woody tissue back into soil so it can once again grow the plants that we love.

The fact that Joan found “her” grubs in hardwood mulch, rather than inside a planter coiled amongst roots, made their designation as “good” grubs a fairly logical assumption.

The hard part was going to be trying to identify their family and or genus.

North America is home to more than 10,000 different species of beetles.

Even after eliminating all those whose larvae look like mealworms, caterpillars or extraterrestrials, there still are an awful lot that are seemingly just plain white and grubby.

Coleopterists sometimes devote their entire lives to exploring just one small area of this very large insect order.

How could I, a mere naturalist, figure out what kind of grubs were bugging Joan?

I started by thinking of the kinds of decomposer beetles that are most common around here, namely the stag beetles, aka the Lucanidae, or pinching bugs. But a quick peek at the grubs’ hindquarters ruled out that genus.

Stag beetles have what is known as a longitudinal anal opening.

Joan’s grubs, it was quite clear, had openings that were transverse.

Long story short, I’m still not 100 percent sure just what sort of “good guys” we’re dealing with, but I have a couple of strong hunches.

Various references, as well as my favorite online resource, www.BugGuide.net, have led me to a genera known as Osmoderma – a name that translates roughly as smelly skin.

These insects, which in their adult form reportedly smell like leather, inhabit the decaying centers of various hardwoods.

They have multiyear life cycles that culminate in the formation of an earthen-walled pupal chamber and the emergence of a medium-sized, dark-colored beetle an inch or so in length.

Another cool thing about Osmoderma: their frass, or droppings, are appealingly described as “Chiclet shaped.” I love Chiclets!

My plan from here on out is fairly straightforward: 1.

Keep Joan’s darlings a) away from Joan and b) happy and healthy in a large terra cotta pot filled with mulch and oak leaves. 2. Periodically take a stab at identifying them, keeping an eye out for “chiclets.” 3. Use them as needed for education and outreach, including our upcoming Bug Biographies programs for second-graders. 4. Repeat for up to three years, until all grubs have pupated and emerged as adults.

Maybe along the way, I’ll have an epiphany and identify the little guys not just to genus but species. If that should happen, I can guarantee I’ll be not just effervescent, but positively ebullient.

Respecting the power of the Fox River Large bodies of water can be dangerous – Kane County residents were reminded of that fact April 19, after a 26-year-old man lost his life while kayaking on the Fox River.

The incident is a tragic one, and by no means is it the only water-related death to occur on the Fox. Although many residents want to enjoy the river for fishing, boating and other recreational activities, that enjoyment must come with a respect for the power of the water and the environment around it. Seemingly too often, a leisurely day spent relaxing and having fun on the Fox can turn into a dangerous – and even life-threatening – situation.

In the incident April 19, the 26-year-old, Dinesh Sudhakar-Uckoo, drowned after the two-person kayak he was riding in went over the dam near State Street in Geneva. Fortunately, the other passenger in the kayak was rescued and has reportedly been recovering.

Another death occurred near that area in August 2011.

During that incident, 57-yearold Randy Suchy drowned after he jumped into the Fox River to save a 12-year-old boy near the Geneva dam.

These events are devastating, and we cannot even begin to imagine the pain the families of the victims must be suffering. Our hearts go out to them.

And as the weather continues to get warmer this year, we remind all visitors to the Fox Valley that caution must be taken when setting out on the Fox River.

The following safety tips are provided by the Illinois Paddling Council via its website, www.illinoispaddling.org/

river_safety: • Don’t paddle alone – join a club – paddle with people who know the river. Let someone know where you will be and when you plan to return.

• Paddle water appropriate to your skills.

• Do not go into [a] fast current unless you are sure you can safely paddle through.

• Learn to control your boat – be able to stop the boat at any time and know how to land on shore.

• Learn to recognize river hazards – strainers (downed trees or branches reaching into the water); dams with hydraulic reversals; bridge piers; barbed wires across rivers.

Additional water safety tips are offered on the American Red Cross website, www.redcross.org/prepare/disaster/ water-safety: • Even if you do not plan on swimming, be cautious around natural bodies of water, including ocean shoreline, rivers and lakes. Cold temperatures, currents and underwater hazards can make a fall into these bodies of water dangerous.

• Never leave a young child unattended near water and do not trust a child’s life to another child; teach children to always ask permission to go near water.

• Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone.

• Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards.

• Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone.

In the wake of last Saturday’s tragedy, we encourage families to talk about the importance of water safety. Such steps can help save lives.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A strange way To the Editor: Illinois GOP gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner sure has a strange way of making education his top priority.

His plan to make Illinois an educational showcase is to slash taxes and slash school funding, which could result in the elimination of teachers and swelling class size and – voila – first class education!

Surprised? Don’t be.

Billionaire Bruce didn’t get that moniker being a factbased, straight-talking salesman. His educational policy sounds like he’s channeling former diet book author and salesman Kevin Trudeau, who’s sitting in the pokey for a decade after getting rich selling weight loss books by claiming his method was easy, when it wasn’t.

The main difference between Rauner and Trudeau is that

Trudeau was charging money for his weight loss tips while Rauner is only charging people their vote for his snake oil tips to improve education.

Maybe if Rauner gets elected he can use his enormous financial influence to get Trudeau early release from the slammer – and make him his education czar.

As a car lover and gear head, which I am, I was very disappointed when General Motors went broke because of poor quality.

The poor quality was kind of caused by the company and the union producing the quality.

The poor quality has now killed 12 people, and government motors is under investigation by Congress. In addition, the poor quality has continued.

They just had a recall of 7 million cars.

As a car guy and gear head, they have absolutely demonstrated an inability to produce safe vehicles.

I would suggest refraining of purchasing all GM cars for the foreseeable future.

And Mayor Rahm Emanuel is raising Cain about guns. Actually, Chicago and all of these other towns that are bereaved by gang violence and lawlessness and gun violence, are the same ones who are promoting illegal immigration and saying give these illegal immigrants a chance, and give them driver’s licenses.

When you breed a disrespect for the law, how can you expect people to obey the law?

How can you expect people to have any morals or ethics whatsoever?

They want to talk about disarming a law-abiding citizen, when, in fact, Chicago and Illinois have some of the strictest gun laws in the country.

And because Chicago and other parts of the state breed this lawlessness, this contempt for the law by allowing illegal immigration and allowing gang bangers and allowing all this stuff and being easy on these people who break the law, they’re just promoting it.

Let’s get off of the backs of the law-abiding citizens. Let’s get tough on the law breakers, the illegal immigrants.

Let them know if they come to the United States, they need to abide by our laws and become Americans and be Americans first ...

Three cheers for McConnaughay Three cheers for State Sen. Karen McConnaughay for voicing her opposition to make permanent the income tax increase that was promised to be temporary. The numbers she stated tell the story. A $26 billion temporary increase in revenue should bring a corresponding $26 billion decrease in debt.

Yet debt was only decreased by $1.6 billion. What happened to the remaining $24.4 billion? The state needs to stop spending. Perhaps sequestration needs to be placed at the state level.

Geneva shops to participate in fundraiser for seniors

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Three Geneva businesses will be participating in a fundraiser May 8 to help Kane County senior citizens.

Visiting Angels of South Elgin is hosting the one-day shopping event to raise funds for Senior Services Associates, Inc,. a nonprofit agency that helps seniors age 60 and older access social services they need.

Visiting Angels provide home care for seniors and respite care for families.

Shops and their specific hours of participation are Graham’s Fine Chocolates, 302 S. Third St., from 4 to 6 p.m.; Cocoon, 212 S. Third. St., from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Galena Wine Cellars, 477 S. Third St., from noon to 6 p.m.

Helping charities and nonprofits is something Graham’s always does, said Jayni Wunderlich, whose family owns the local confectionary.

“For the past 27 years, we have given back to the community in all sorts of ways,”

Wunderlich said. “We have helped different schools charities churches and anything nonprofit.”

Sherie McGowan, owner of Cocoon, said she was not familiar with Senior Services until Visiting Angels approached her about doing a fundraiser.

“It sounded like a much-needed social services agency,” McGowan said. “We do a lot of different fundraisers.”

‘Threat letters’ vs. actual litigation The Kane County Chronicle published an article Thursday in regard to St. Charles School District 303 and other governing bodies needing legal expertise for a variety of reasons.

In said article, District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann commented that, in the previous school districts where he was employed, parents’ threats were often just threats.

Now, Schlomann believes we seem to live in very litigious times because parents often consult with attorneys prior to contacting him.

So, why is that?

As a general litigator, I was often consulted by a variety of potential clients who had some pending issue, and the potential client only wanted me to send a letter to the opposing party threatening litigation (also known as

The potential client felt that the threat letter would suffice, and had little to no inclination to pursue litigation.

I learned very quickly to decline each and every one of those potential clients, and I continue to do so today.

This is because my reputation as an attorney is at stake.

If I send the threat letter and then do not follow up

with the threat of litigation – if the parties cannot come to a resolution – then my reputation is not that of an aggressive advocate, but is instead of someone who can be ignored.

My future threat letters go right in the trash, and I then become ineffective at my profession. How does this serve my client?

Reading the Chronicle article, I believe some school administrators and other government leaders often learn to ignore the threats of constituents because their past experiences led them to believe the threats were not serious. The grumblings

of the constituents can become as ineffective as the threat letters the potential clients wanted me to send.

As a result, an unintended consequence develops – those constituents now feel they actually need legal representation because a particular governing body does not hear their voices.

Schlomann’s statement at the end of the Chronicle article is, in my opinion, spot on.

A public body’s communication and ability to develop trust will help alleviate the litigious environment that has developed.

However, it appears that trust often can become bro-

ken in certain areas; otherwise, constituents would not seek counsel prior to contacting a certain governing body.

An undrafted free agent from La Habana, Cuba, Balaguert, 21, has thrived with runners in scoring position as he slides throughout the middle of the order. There’s no reluctance there, as the 6-foot-1, 215-pounder moves well on the bases and defensively, too.

“He’s more of a contact, gap-type hitter,” manager Mark Johnson said. “Obviously, he’s a big, strong kid that’s going to develop some power. He has power, but sometimes you’ve got to learn how to hit with power, and he’s kind of going through that process right now and he’s thinking more up the middle, other way.

“He really doesn’t understand how to pull the ball yet, and that’s going to come with experience.

He’s a got a nice, low, short swing for a bigger guy. As soon as he starts learning the zone recognition, the pitch recognition he’ll be a little bit better in that case, too.”

Watch and wait Fan Dan Beales of Lombard sported a Jonathan Toews Blackhawks sweater and a White Sox cap, a nod to two of the four major Chicago professional sports teams in action Friday night.

Cougars continue upward mobility

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Designated hitter Danny Canela and righthander Daury Torrez both endeared themselves to Cougars fans Friday, one night later than initially expected.

Had it not been for scheduling switches, Canela likely would have signed postgame autographs in the gift shop after spending the night on the bench.

Ditto for Torrez, who handcuffed Wisconsin in the Cougars’ 8-4 win after missing Thursday’s turn in the rotation because of an ominous forecast.

Both undrafted free agents displayed their skill sets in the opener of a three-game series, helping the Midwest League-leading Cougars (15-6) extend their winning streak to four.

The elation counts double – if not more – for Canela, who played in the independent

Frontier League last season.

He went 2 for 4 and matched catcher Will Remillard with a team-best three RBIs against Wisconsin (10-10).

“You come from independent ball, you don’t sign for a whole lot, so you’re not necessarily a liability, so going out there during spring training it’s kind of stressful, you know, Danny Canela because you need to make a ballclub or else you’re going to get released,” Canela said.

“I did the best that I could.

You can’t dwell on things.

You can’t change the past.

Just kept moving forward and I’m here now. Happy to be here.”

Canela earned Frontier League Rookie of the Year honors with the River City (Mo.) Rascals last season, batting .360 with 12 home runs and 53 RBIs, so his acquisi-

tion wasn’t just a whim. Cubs scouts checked him out on the recommendation of executive Alex Suarez, one of Canela’s assistant high school coaches in Miami.

Torrez, a 20-year old from the Dominican Republic, signed with the Cubs in December 2010.

Now in his first year with a full-season affiliate, he improved to 3-0 after limiting the Timber Rattlers to three runs on six hits in 6⅓ innings, striking out seven.

“Because I’m a strike thrower, I can keep the ball down, I’m going to be able to pitch some good games at this level,” Torrez said through translator and pitching coach David Rosario.

“I just always try to always come to the field to work hard and be the best that I can so I can challenge myself to improve every game from the last one. I’m making sure that every time I go out, I’m looking at myself and push-

ing myself to be the best that I can be that specific day. And so far, so good.”

Manager Mark Johnson also recommended Canela as a translator – he learned Spanish first growing up – but Canela still was finishing up with autographs. There was plenty for fans to talk about in the waiting line, namely the offense.

Yasiel Balaguert and Carlos Penalver paced a 13-hit attack with three-hit nights.

Wisconsin righty Zach Quintana allowed seven runs in the first two innings.

A night after rallying from a seven-run deficit to beat Beloit, the Cougars didn’t panic when Wisconsin threatened to dig out from its own hole.

“We’ve been playing really well together, and we never say never. We never give up,” first baseman Jacob Rogers said. “This team’s pretty good at always fighting to the very end. Even if we win or lose, we give it all we can.”

The tone for a marathon afternoon was set early as the teams combined for 10 runs in the first inning.

After Kaneland (8-8, 1-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) scored three in the top of the first, the Spartans put on an offensive display in the bottom half, driving Knights starter Anissa Becker from the game.

The Spartans (4-8, 1-2 NI Big 12 East) mashed nine hits in the inning, including two apiece from the top two batters in the order, Lyndsey Coddington

and Brooke English.

Willis summoned Courtney Davis to relieve Becker, and she stabilized the game in a hurry. After allowing a hit to English – the first batter she faced – Davis didn’t yield another in her remaining threeplus innings of work. She was replaced in the sixth inning.

“She picked her teammate up,” Willis said of Davis.

“Anissa came out without her best stuff today and was hit pretty hard. They’re a good-hitting team. Courtney was called upon, she came in and did exactly what we hoped

they’re hitting, we’re going to be fine.”

Davis, an off-speed specialist, cooled down Sycamore’s bats with plenty of movement and location until a spate of wildness in the bottom of the fifth prompted Willis to turn to Morrow down the stretch.

“We all believe in each other,” Davis said. “I knew if we got out of that [bottom of the first] it would come around. I think getting out of that really helped us.”

While Kaneland used three pitchers, Carpenter stayed with Zak, who battled through 13 hits and eight walks for the Knights.

“She’s a horse,” Carpenter said. “She threw all seven innings against Morris yesterday and we said ‘How are you feeling?’ and she said ‘I feel good’ so I said ‘All right, we’re running you back out there again today.’ She pitched well enough to win. We just didn’t take care of business for her.

That’s unfortunate for her and for the team.”

With Kaneland leading, 109, Sycamore right fielder Jordyn Shultz led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, but a baserunning gaffe aided Morrow, who retired the next six batters to close the game.

Kaneland works out of jam to knock off DeKalb

By TRAVIS ZUELLIG editorial@kcchronicle.com DeKALB – In the DeKalb baseball team’s contest against Kaneland on Friday afternoon, there was a runner on base in almost every inning.

The only difference was Kaneland was able to bring more home.

The Knights scored all of their runs over the course of the first four innings, and Nate Hopkins, Nick Henne and Nick Stahl worked out of jams to escape with a 5-3 victory.

The Barbs had multiple runners on base all game long but never could bring home more than one run an inning.

“Bottom line is that we had

chances and we weren’t able to capitalize enough. It’s nice to scratch one run here or one run there,” DeKalb coach Jake Howells said. “When you continually [put runners on], you have to scratch out more than just one run some of the time.

We are just not getting that done.”

Kaneland (10-3, 6-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning. A sacrifice fly from Tyler Carlson scored Joe Laudont, and later, Nick Stratman brought in Hopkins with an RBI single.

The Barbs (5-7, 0-6 NI Big 12 East) responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning.

Five players reached base, but only Pat Aves came in to score

on a fielder’s choice.

Leading 2-1, Kaneland extended its lead with two more runs in the third. Laudont doubled, then a Tyler Carlson single brought him home.

Hopkins kept the order moving with another single and Carlson’s run made the score 4-1.

“We [had] some guys swinging the bat real well today. Anthony Holubecki was crushing the ball off the fence. Joe Laudont was the same way,” Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said. “Getting guys on is half of it, but getting them in [wins games], and we need to do a better job with that.”

DeKalb closed the gap to 4-2 with another run in the third, when Aves scored on a passed

ball.

Kaneland got that run back when Holubecki scored on a Jacob Bachio single.

“We lately have really been ripping the ball and getting guys on base,” Hopkins said.

“That was one aspect that we weren’t solid with last year, but we are coming around to be good at hitting.”

Several times, Kaneland turned double plays and DeKalb could not get timely hits when needed. Howells said something always was happening in this game, but too many DeKalb mistakes cost them.

“We made some stupid mistakes. We didn’t execute the things we should have,” Howells said. “At some point, you

are waiting for somebody to get the base-clearing double.

You are waiting for somebody to get the two-out hit that will score three runs or two runs or clear the bases, and we aren’t getting that right now.”

Hopkins earned the win in five innings. The hurler allowed three runs on six hits.

Laudont, Hopkins and Holubecki each finished with three hits apiece. Carlson had two RBIs. “Let’s just say, winning ugly is still winning,” Aversa said. “We had every opportunity to lose that game and I am glad we could nail things down at the end.”

Aves led the Barbs with two hits and two runs scored. Logan Haring also had two hits.

SYCAMORE – There was bright sunshine in Sycamore, but it wasn’t sunstroke that had Sycamore softball coach Jill Carpenter confused about the game’s progress Friday afternoon against Kaneland.

The Knights and Spartans played a twist-filled, argument-intensive game that was tough for even the participants to keep track of, especially without the scoreboard working. When all was sorted out, the Knights prevailed in a 10-9, comeback victory.

“It was so long, at the end there, when it was the sixth, I thought it was the seventh,” Carpenter said. “That’s how long the game was, so I was ‘All right, we’ve got one more inning to go.’ We had already played for like 2½ hours at that point. I think it’s hard when there’s that many runners and that many conversations that need to take place and stuff like, that but you’ve got to be better.”

Kaneland coach Brian Willis said the complexion of the game felt like slow-pitch softball.

“If you wanted to see the whole book of softball, today

she’d do and what we knew she was capable of.”

Sycamore led, 7-3, after the first inning, but the Knights chipped away against Spartans senior pitcher Taylor Zak, finally overtaking Sycamore with a four-run top of the sixth. The rally was capped with a two-out, bases loaded single by second baseman Morgan Weber that scored Morgan Sikon and Angie Morrow.

Weber, a promising freshman from Sugar Grove, had plenty of time to mull the critical at-bat as Willis disputed an overturned call at the plate after Kaneland’s Mary Clausen tried to squeeze a runner home with a bases load bunt.

“My confidence has gone up a lot, it really has, in the past couple weeks,” Weber said. “Just hitting the ball and just staying low, watching the ball.”

Weber is turning into another reliable run-producer for Kaneland to go with veteran sluggers Meg Cohrs (2 for 5, double, three RBIs) and Lanie Callaghan (2 for 4 with a double, walk, RBI).

“She came through in a big way for us,” Willis said of Weber. “As long as her and the other girls continue to hit like

Mooseheart standouts to go junior college route Mooseheart basketball standouts Makur Puou and Mangisto Deng have learned countless lessons since arriving in the United States in 2011.

They’re about to learn another – delayed gratification.

The top two players on Mooseheart’s IHSA Class 1A boys basketball state championship team will see their Division I college basketball ambitions delayed for a couple of years, Ramblers coach Ron Ahrens confirmed this week.

The seniors’ academic credits did not transfer over from South Sudan according to NCAA Clearinghouse specifications, so Deng and Puou will head to community college next year.

Ahrens is confident they’ll eventually find their way onto D-I rosters.

“They both will be,” Ahrens said. “In all honesty, if they would have NCAA qualified, they would have both been playing Division I ball [next year], I have no doubt about that. The state tournament helped Mangisto out immensely. Mak was getting Division I offers [already].”

The other South Sudanese transfer student who started for the Ramblers – 7-foot-1 Akim Nyang – will remain at Mooseheart next year to make additional academic progress, Ahrens said. Ahrens does not anticipate Nyang having additional athletic eligibility at Mooseheart.

Puou, a 6-foot-10, shot-blocking post presence, and Deng, a 6-7 wing with impressive perimeter skills, identified earning U.S. college degrees as their mission when they arrived at Mooseheart, and they hoped to experience college basketball along the way.

Ahrens acknowledged some disappointment on their parts that D-I ball isn’t materializing more quickly. He said Puou and Deng will finalize their junior college basketball plans after focusing on the AAU hoops circuit this spring, and Ahrens thinks a more gradual transition to college life will ultimately be beneficial.

“I’m sure they want to be NCAA Division I and playing basketball right now,” Ahrens said. “My personal feeling is

While reaching NCAA eligibility standards in a condensed time frame was an uphill battle, Ahrens emphasized that the boys have been highly impressive in their classroom achievements at Mooseheart.

“They’ve made outstanding progress academically while they’ve been here at Mooseheart,” Ahrens said. “Just the English language alone, they’ve probably improved six, seven, eight years in their English language in only being here three, and they have improved drastically in writing the English language. … They’ve improve greatly so that they’re able to be college-bound and go to a community college, so we’re extremely happy with how they’ve progressed.”

Ahrens said the post-state championship delirium has mostly subsided since midMarch, though not entirely.

An extensive trophy case – a “shrine” to the 2013-14 Ramblers, Ahrens said – is in the works for Mooseheart’s fieldhouse, and the Ramblers are still fielding invitations from Moose lodges around the state to swing by for a meal.

Ahrens said it was “standing-room only” when the Ramblers enjoyed a fish fry at the Pekin lodge during their stay in Peoria for the state finals. Celebratory gatherings at Moose lodges in Batavia and Sterling are in the plans for May, and even more dates could materialize.

“That will bring the excitement again, and at some point, some evening, we’ll probably have dinner here on campus,” Ahrens said. “I haven’t even had a sports banquet for them yet but we’re going to try and fit all those things in before they graduate.”

“They were able to stay focused and get that run back and made some defensive plays that helped them out,” Remus said. “I give them credit for staying focused on the game when things weren’t going our way.”

St. Francis added one more in the bottom of the sixth, but that was quickly erased as

the Chargers answered with an RBI single in the top of the seventh.

ACC coach Tom Babyar was proud his team put a good effort in but said the Chargers have to find a way to do more.

“So far this year we haven’t been playmakers,” Babyar said. “We find ways to give teams runs.”

The Chargers (7-9) took the lead in the second inning after a leadoff walk turned into a run, but ACC couldn’t hold the lead.

“It always seems we are running uphill,” Babyar said.

“But the girls are battling.”

The walk-off hit was Zydek’s first of her career, and she was excited she could help her team.

“It gives me a lot more confidence now knowing I can do it and I do have it in me to pull through at the end,” Zydek said.

First-year Aurora Central Catholic girls soccer coach Kristy Kane weathered an emotionally draining afternoon Thursday as her Chargers matched up with her former team, Rosary. ACC won, 2-1, thanks to a pair of Jordyn Sundberg goals.

After the game, Kane spoke with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab for this week’s Weekend Chit-chat, in which Kane discusses Sundberg’s emergence, the dynamics of being on the other side of the ACC-Rosary rivalry and the possibility for future ACC-Rosary matchups considering ACC will head to the Metro Suburban Conference next year.

GENEVA – Three years, nine months and 16 days before Wrigley Field celebrated its 100th birthday Wednesday, former Cougars reliever Bo Schultz delivered his own timeless tribute.

“Wrigley’s great,” Schultz said. “You don’t know who the person is next to you, but you’re high-fiving anyway.”

A Texan, Schultz spoke from field level at The Friendly Confines as an Oakland A’s prospect preparing for the July 2010 “Road To Wrigley” game against then-Cubs affiliate Peoria.

For current Cougars, the first two of Schultz’s words certainly apply. Now that the organization is aligned with the Cubs, though, the venue assumes an added aura because players trek the road to Wrigley together every day.

“We know it’s a stepping stone. Everybody has to step one step at a time. Not many guys just jump straight up there,” first baseman Jacob Rogers said. “We look forward to just making it there one time. It’s the goal.

Everybody’s goal.”

It’s an internalized goal, to be sure.

Mabel Cummins, an emerging 12-year-old bowler from Elburn, posted a league-high 185 average (scratch) to earn the top spot in the St. Charles Bowl Youth League for the 2013-14 season. Cummins led an all-girls team to a first-place finish in the “Majors” division along with Alyssa Byers of South Elgin, and Olivia Cassata of Elgin. Cummins acknowledges Missy Barton, the manager of the youth league at St. Charles Bowl, as her dedication has helped the program become one of the most successful junior bowling leagues in the country with hundreds of area children enrolled each year.

Traditions versus television “It’s Easter. We should do something together,” I suggested, as the kids rummaged through their baskets last Sunday morning. I spotted the “Scribblish” game in the corner, coated with a thick layer of dust. I think it’s even still shrink-wrapped.

“Let’s watch ‘Modern Family,’” Noah suggested.

“Yes, let’s watch another family being a family,” I replied.

It was too early for church (though we never actually made it) and our brunch reservation was seven hours off (we managed, somehow, to keep that), but as I was already too hyped-up on the kids’ early wake-up call and jelly beans, going back to bed was pointless. Yes, quality family time was ours for the taking.

But then we remembered the eggs. Like we do every year, Todd and I had hidden several plastic eggs filled with candy, coins and even a few bills, so the kids took off to find them.

Last year, after the kids found the eggs and left the opened ones in a heap on the coffee table, they also left $6 behind. I made this thrilling discovery last Saturday night at 11 o’clock, when I finally got around to refilling them. I was delighted, as I’d forgotten to go to the ATM and was left to

This year, I put a $10 bill in one. Noah predicted that his little sister would find it.

He was right.

I didn’t want him to give up, though, as there were still plenty of eggs left, with a grand total of 18, to be precise. This I knew because I counted them, this year, to avoid the kids’ angst about whether to keep searching or not.

“It’s torture,” Noah said. “Do you remember when Grandma stuck a $20 bill in the bush?” Noah asked, recalling the Easter my Mom spent the holiday with us and got in on the action. He remembers that Grandma simply gave one to little Holly, but he had to search for his. He

finally found it outside. (It’s amazing what kids remember!)

I do recall how much she enjoyed doling out the clues. I love that part, too. If I’m honest, the egg search is probably my favorite of our Easter traditions, though perhaps it’s more fun for me than the kids? (I’ll have to ask them, but perhaps Noah’s description, “torture,” is clear enough?)

I get a huge kick out of discovering clever, new hiding places every year, too.

(Now that I think about it, this egg hunt probably does little to promote sibling harmony. It is kind of like “The Hunger Games,” to make children compete for resources. And on Easter, no less! Yes indeed, what kind of Easter Bunny puts a kid through that? But I digress.)

This year I hid one egg in Jake’s stored dog food, and another in his dish. After the kids discovered those, the Big Red Dog, all decked out in his pastel-plaid Easter bandanna, flopped down on the couch and sighed his heavy, old-man sigh. Perhaps he didn’t approve? Or was feeling left out?

So, Holly and Todd filled a few plastic eggs with dog food and let him find them. She did the same thing for Posey, our cat.

A few minutes later our satisfied Eas-

ter dog sat on my feet and burped. We had at least one happy customer.

Finally, there was only one egg left to find. But the kids were losing interest.

Torture, you know.

“It’s probably a quarter,” Holly said, wryly.

“Oh, you say that like it’s a bad thing,” I said, “but how many times have you begged me for a quarter? Huh?” She knew what I was talking about. Every time we leave the gym she begs for one for the gumball machine, but I never have one with me because I leave my purse in the car.

She resumed her search.

After the last egg was found, we gathered in the family room while the kids took stock. (There was a whole buck in that last stinkin’ egg, by the way.)

“Where’s the remote?” Noah asked.

“Why?” I asked.

“So we can watch ‘Modern Family,’” he said.

Ah, yes. We were all in the same room, at least. Works for me.

Small shrubs allow sunshine, provide shade Do you already have large trees in your garden? And lots of evergreen shrubs? Would you like to add a bit of color in a space-conscious way? The answer is small shrubs.

Small shrubs are a fairly new category that has become very popular in garden centers. They can be grown in pots, but more importantly, they can be tucked into corners of your garden. Here are some to consider.

• Abelia ‘Pinky Bells.’ This is a new plant, with some of the largest flowers on an Abelia. It starts flowering in the fall, making it most unusual and covers itself in bells. It has red new growth. Abelia is a zone 6 plant, so it will need lots of protection in winter to

• Clethra alnifolia ‘Vanilla Spice.’

• Deutzia gracilis ‘Chardonnay Pearls.’ This is a plant from a few years back (on Garden Design’s “Way Hot 100” list in 2006), but not often seen in landscapes despite its ease of culture and multiple seasons of interest. It produces tiny buds in April, followed by gorgeous fluffy white flowers in June, and then displays stunning lime yellow fall color. It is the perfect small plant and is completely hardy in zone 5a.

• Comanthospace japonica ‘Golden Angel.’ You may have to look for this one, but it jumps out of the shade with golden leaves and white bottlebrush flowers.

Completely winter hardy in our zone, it shines in a shade garden.

Renowned choirmaster to conduct St. Charles Singers’ season-finale concerts KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – English choirmaster and composer Philip Moore – the former music director at York Minster Cathedral – will make his Chicago-area conducting debut when he leads the St. Charles Singers in an all-British season-finale program Saturday, May 17, in River Forest and Sunday, May 18, in St. Charles.

The St. Charles concert will take place at 4 p.m. at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church, 307 Cedar Ave.; and the River Forest concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 7300 Division St. The capstone program of the St. Charles Singers’ 30th concert season is titled “Bouquet of Voices,” and will offer the U.S. premiere of Moore’s “At the round earth’s imagined corners” – a choral setting of a religious sonnet by English Renaissance poet John Donne.

The program will be the St. Charles Singers’ first concert in the River Forest-Oak Park area since the mixed-voice professional chamber choir was founded three decades ago, according to a news release.

There will be 37 ensemble members of the St. Charles Singers performing.

Brass, organ and percussion will accompany the choir in the Judgment Day meditation.

Brass will include four trumpets, French horn, three trombones and a tuba. The percussion section will comprise timpani, snare and bass drums, cymbals, glockenspiel and xylophone.

The program will span from the English Renaissance to present day, offering sacred and secular music, including arrangements of British folk songs, works about peace (with Memorial Day in mind), and works that celebrate the joys of spring.

The program also will include Edward Bairstow’s “Let

All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent;” Benjamin Britten’s “The Evening Primrose;” William Byrd’s “ S o l v e , i u b e n t e Philip Moore Deo;” John Clements’s “Flower of Beauty;” Herbert Howells’s “Magnificat;” Gustav Holst’s “I Love My Love;” Peter Knight’s arrangement of John David’s “You Are the New Day;” and Felix Mendelssohn’s “Verleigh uns Freiden,” among others.

“Philip Moore comes from the same tradition of British music that’s always played such an important part in the life of the St. Charles Singers,” Hunt said in the release. “With his participation, we’ll be able present the same type of concert we originally envisioned, but with another revered English composer-conductor on the podium.”

Single tickets for the May “Bouquet of Voices” concerts are $40 general adult admission, $30 for seniors ages 65 and older and $10 for students.

‘Hateship Loveship’ a startling turn in fresh start

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post Kristen Wiig has made a career of quiet mortification. Since creating her strange, often quirkily recessive recurring characters on “Saturday Night Live,” then attaining superstar status in the smash raunch-com “Bridesmaids,” Wiig has turned a relatively limited bag of behavioral tics – shy downward glances; whispered line deliveries that trail off into vague nothingness; oblique, off-center staging – into her own highly personal, mousily effective Hollywood juggernaut.

She brings all of those familiar mannerisms to bear on Johanna Parry, the withdrawn heroine of “Hateship Loveship,” although here they’re deployed in the name of literary-minded drama rather than comedy.

Adapted by Liza Johnson from a short story by Alice Munro, “Hateship Loveship” sneaks up on the viewer, not only in the way the story takes its unlikely turns, but in Wiig’s own portrayal of a woman discovering desire and, in the most subtle way possible,

acting on it.

As “Hateship Loveship” opens, Johanna – who has worked most of her life as a domestic aide for one elderly woman – is starting a new job in a new town (“a new everything,” as she describes it), where she will be serving as a housekeeper and nanny for a prosperous businessman named Bill McCauley (Nick Nolte) and his teenage granddaughter Sabitha (Hailee Steinfeld).

On her first day at work, Johanna also meets Ken (Guy Pearce), Sabitha’s father, a raffishly attractive lout whom Johanna walks in on as he’s stealing drugs from his fatherin-law’s medicine cabinet. (All the supporting players in “Hateship Loveship” are terrific, especially the young Sami Gayle, as Sabitha’s best friend Edith.)

Observing the family’s fractured dynamics with a slightly glazed but hungrily avid stare, Johanna begins to be drawn in. The question in “Hateship Loveship” is to what end, and Johnson – who made a superb debut in 2011 with “Return” — does an estimable job of doling out informa-

tion and plot developments so deliberately that the audience is never quite sure what’s around the next corner.

Certainly they get no clue from Wiig’s performance as Johanna, whose cipherlike impassivity at first threatens to make “Hateship Loveship” fatally inert, but then begins to pay off as the film heads to one of the more startling third acts in recent memory.

Before viewers dismiss that denouement as impossibly pat, they should ask themselves: Wouldn’t its opposite number be just as tidy? And haven’t we seen that story before?

But we’ve never seen a protagonist quite like Johanna, who on the one hand personifies female self-abnegation at its most domesticated, but on the other embodies sheer will at its most stubborn.

She knows the value of elbow grease, whether she’s redeeming a dirty kitchen floor or even a scruffier human soul.

• “Hateship Loveship” received three out of four stars and is rated R for drug use, some sexuality and profanity. The film runs 101 minutes.

Funeral flowers should be shared by mourners Dear Abby: My father passed away recently. Flowers and plants were sent to the funeral home.

After the funeral Mass, the flowers were sent to the cemetery for the gravesite services. Afterward, I was asked to go to the funeral home to pick them up.

When I arrived, I saw my sister-in-law taking the plant her employer had sent into her car.

She said it was HER plant. The next day, my other sister-in-law went to my mother’s house to retrieve the plant HER company had sent.

Abby, I have never heard of this. I thought that because the flowers and plants had been sent to my mother, it should be up to her to decide whether or not she wants to distribute them. After all, she’s the one suffering the greatest loss. What is the proper procedure for plants to be distributed after a funeral? – Christine In Missouri Dear Christine: The plants should be shared. Your mother is not the only person who is grieving. Your sisters-in-law are married to the sons of the deceased, so they should have the plants their employers sent to the funeral.

When there are more flowers

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips and plants than the family can enjoy, people often have them delivered to nursing homes or homes for the elderly or disabled, where they can lend a burst of color and good cheer.

Dear Abby: It seems strange to write to you, but I’d like to share this story about how small acts of kindness can multiply.

On a dark, miserable afternoon, I was out grocery shopping.

The woman in line in front of me had two small children and two full carts of groceries. When all her bags were loaded, she began frantically searching in her purse for her car keys. When she couldn’t find them, she realized that, in her haste, she had locked them inside her car. I asked if I could drive her home to get a spare key and she agreed.

I helped her into her house with her bags of groceries, then drove them all back to the store for her car. “How can I ever thank you?” she asked. My reply was,

“No thanks are needed; just pass it on.”

Two weeks later, I was at a party when a couple walked into the living room and the woman excitedly said, “There she is!” It was the woman from the market.

She rushed over and proceeded to tell everyone how we met.

Then she said she’d had her chance to “pass it on.” I asked what she told the person who had thanked HER, and she said, “I said what you did, ‘No thanks are needed – pass it on!’”

Small kindnesses bring big rewards. If anyone has been the recipient of an act of kindness, remember to pass it on. It’s the Golden Rule.

Eating fish in place of red meat is still good advice Dear Doctor K: Does eating fish help prevent prostate cancer?

Dear Reader: You’ve certainly heard me encourage readers to eat plenty of fish, particularly fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel.

That’s because many good studies have found that people who eat fish frequently have lower rates of many serious diseases, including heart disease and several types of cancer.

A recently published study from the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial (PCPT) was described in the media as coming to the opposite conclusion. I don’t agree, but to explain why, I first need to talk about the substances in fish that are thought to be beneficial for humans.

Fish contain high levels of two omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, which have been shown to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. EPA and DHA also calm inflammation – and inflammation contributes to the development and progression of prostate cancer. That’s why researchers were interested in learning whether these fatty acids might help prevent prostate cancer.

The PCPT measured levels of

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff various fatty acids in the blood of 3,461 men, 1,658 of whom developed prostate cancer during the PCPT study. They found that men with the highest levels of DHA were 2.5 times more likely to develop aggressive, high-grade prostate cancer over a seven-year period compared with men who had the lowest levels of DHA. What could explain these results?

It’s not clear. But the PCPT did not require men to undergo prostate biopsies before enrolling in the study. So, it’s possible that some of the participants already had high-grade cancer before they entered the trial.

Most important, this was not a study of fish consumption at all. It was a study of the levels of certain nutrients in the blood, including omega-3 fatty acids such as DHA. These omega-3s could have come from supplements, from food other than fish, or from fish itself.

researchers analyzed blood samples from the 1,658 men who developed prostate cancer during the PCPT study. But only 125 of these men – about 8 percent of the total – developed high-grade tumors. The vast majority of men developed low-grade cancer, and DHA levels had no relationship to low-grade cancer. So while high levels of DHA may increase risk of developing high-grade cancer, the actual risk is still low.

Many more men die of heart disease than from prostate cancer.

Eating fatty fish prepared healthfully (poached, broiled or grilled) in place of red meat is a good way to protect your heart. So, if you eat fish, do it for your heart and your overall health.

At this time, there is no evidence that fish prevents prostate cancer. But this new study does not say, as was reported by some in the media, that eating fish increases the risk of prostate cancer.

School locker searches are legal Dr. Wallace: I think the school administrators are breaking the privacy laws of students. I’m a ninth-grader, and they are always having random locker searches. Once in a while, they do find some drugs and once they found a hunting knife, but mostly they find nothing but books, sack lunches and gym clothes.

It seems like our school principal really loves to waste time searching student lockers. A couple of months ago, he opened mine and found a half pack of cigarettes and a cigarette lighter. This stuff wasn’t even mine.

Dear Nameless: Teenagers do have certain rights guaranteed by the Constitution, and if they feel these rights are being infringed upon, they can defend themselves in court.

But locker searches wouldn’t make it to the courtroom. The highest court in the land, the United States Supreme Court, made a decision in 1985 that if school officials have a reasonable suspicion of illegal behavior, a student’s locker can be searched without the student’s permission.

At the bridge table, we have safety-plays. Their aim, usually, is to ensure at most one loser whatever the lie of the missing cards in that suit. Experts know a lot of them; less capable players know far fewer. But, of course, often a safety-play proves unnecessary, because the distribution is docile.

The safety-play that is needed in this deal looks so strange that many would never even think of it. How should South play to guarantee making six no-trump?

West leads the spade 10.

North made a sensible quantitative raise to slam.

Declarer starts with 10 top tricks: three spades, three hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. So, he needs only four club winners, not five.

It is tempting to win the first trick in the dummy and call for the club jack (the right play in seven no-trump). And it is true that any time clubs are 3-2 or 4-1, or East has all five, there is no damage done. However, when West has all five clubs, suddenly the contract has died.

South should take out insurance. He should win the first trick in his hand and lead a low club toward the dummy. At the worst, this costs an overtrick.

Here, though, if West wins with his club queen, four club tricks are established. Or, if West plays low, declarer wins with dummy’s 10, plays a heart to his hand, and leads another club toward dummy – mission accomplished.
