Beetles that have the ability to click GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto Did you ever stop to consider just how many parts of your day involve clicks?

Do you “click here” when websites invite you to request more information?

Do you remember to “Click it or ticket” when you get in your car? When you change channels on the TV, do you use a “clicker?” (Bonus question: Do you remember when remotes actually “clicked”?)

The other day at Hickory Knolls, we were clicking like mad. Well, not us so much as our little visitor Ampedus nigricollis, a small, brownish click beetle.

The little guy, or gal, appeared in our office courtesy of coworker Lisa O’Brien, who had been outside prepping for Bug Biographies, a school program we offer to second-grade classes. She noticed the beetle crawling on a hunk of bark that had fallen from a dead ash tree and thought it worthy of further investigation.

Lisa said she wondered whether the bug could be an emerald ash borer, that dreaded killer of ash trees, that had somehow managed to survive our winter season as an adult. (Like most

Although similar in size and shape to an EAB, the insect lacked the brilliant “emerald” green color for which EABs were named.

But looking at the beetle with the aid of some magnifying lenses, it quickly became clear that this bug was no EAB. Most obviously, it lacked the large, googly, space alien-like eyes I’ve always associated with EABs. So, one species down, 24,999 to go. (Coleoptera, or the beetles, is the largest insect order in the world. At

390,000 species and counting, worldwide, beetles account for 40 percent of all known insects and 25 percent of all known animal species. The count for North America right now stands at about 25,000 described species, with an estimated 3,000 more yet to be discovered.

We quickly eliminated the native borers and were moving onto some of the other more common beetle

families when one of us – not sure if it was Lisa or I – got the idea that we should try to pick up the bug to get an even closer look.

And that’s when something clicked.

The beetle, no doubt irritated with this rude infringement on its freedom, flexed its body and let out an audible click. That motion, in turn, helped something click in the dusty nether-regions of my brain.

Aha! I suddenly recalled the spring afternoon several decades ago when I found my first click beetle. A nature-nerdy fourth-grader, I’d recently read about this unique group of insects and was over-the-moon thrilled to have found one underneath a rock by my parent’s front step.

Gifted with a unique mechanism – a spine that locks into a notch on the insect’s underside – click beetles have the amazing ability to click, or pop, themselves upright if they should find themselves upside down.

The driver of a white compact Chevrolet SUV was taken by ambulance to Delnor Hospital in Geneva after being extricated from the vehicle.

The driver of the other vehicle, a gray, full-sized Ford pickup truck, refused fire department transportation and was taken to Delnor Hospital by family, said Jami White, a

TREASURE HUNTERS’ PARADISE More than 200 garage sales being held in Geneva, St. Charles

bschory@shawmedia.com Leann Molitor said her garage sale at 403 Timbers Trail in St. Charles was so successful, she had sold half of her items in 90 minutes after opening Friday morning.

“We had Harley clothes, tables, an oak kitchen table and chairs, two old Singer sewing machines,” Molitor said, ticking off the treasures that bargain hunters scooped up.

Her two daughters, Laura Molitor and Kara Nottingham, were busy helping out, as a steady stream of shoppers came up the driveway to peruse the remaining items.

Molitor’s house was among the 115 households signed up for the St. Charles Community-Wide Garage Sale, which concludes at 4 p.m. today.

The Geneva Chamber of Commerce also is hosting a City-Wide ABC Garage Sale at the same time, also concluding today, with 107 households registered.

Among the sellers was Lynda Johnson of 500 Fulton St., Geneva. Johnson is fulfilling a New Year’s resolution to get rid of stuff.

“This is my first year,” Johnson said. “It was basically some girlfriends and I made a New Year resolution and set it on our calendar back in January. I have six families all bringing their stuff here.”

Items for sale included custom cabinetry; a Pottery Barn dining table; books, mostly for middle school age kids; a sewing machine; dining chairs; kitchen goods and some clothes, Johnson said.

Geneva chamber spokeswoman Laura Rush said it is not a bad thing that both Geneva and St. Charles are offering garage sales during the same weekend.

“If anything, it brings more buyers to town,” Rush said. “We’re all in this together.”

Rush added that “judging from what people are selling, there are great deals to be had. If you are a garage sale person ... it’s the thrill of the kill.”

Shoppers Gary and Diane Meyer of Pingree Grove appeared to agree, as they started in St. Charles and said they would continue to Geneva.

“We love garage sales,” Diane Meyer said. “You never know what you’re going to find.”

Sentencing for King pushed back to late May

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The sentencing for a Geneva man convicted of murdering his wife has been pushed back to late May, according to court records.

Shadwick King, 47, originally was scheduled to be sentenced May Shadwick 6, but that date King was stricken Wednesday.

King instead will be in court May 26 before Kane County Judge James Hallock for a hearing on his motion for a new trial, according to court records. If Hallock or the presiding judge denies the

motion, the hearing would continue on to King’s sentencing.

Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress on April 15 filed a 36-page motion for King asking the court to vacate the finding of guilty for him or to grant him a new trial based on what she stated were multiple errors made by the prosecution and the court.

As of Friday afternoon, Kane County prosecutors had not yet filed the response to the motion. They will be at the May 26 hearing to present arguments during the motion hearing.

King was convicted March 16 of first-degree murder in the July 6, 2014, death of his wife, Kathleen, 32. A 12-member jury took about 5½ hours to deliberate the case.

A fire district’s defeated referendum has led its trustees to consider measures to cut its bottom line, its board president said Friday.

The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District board is scheduled to vote on a moratorium on spending at its Monday meeting.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the district’s Station 3, 34W500 Carl Lee Road, St. Charles.

After the Monday vote, the district budget approved for the next fiscal year starting May 1 likely will be amended, said Jim Gaffney, the district’s board president.

“Since the referendum didn’t make it, the board is taking a look at the budget numbers,” Gaffney said. “It will be very difficult to make ends meet.”

To say I was similarly rapt with this latest click beetle would be only a slight exaggeration. Turn it over; watch it flip. Clasp between thumb and index finger; feel it snap.

The fun could very well have been endless that afternoon, except for the fact that the beetle eventually began to show some signs of tiring.

Plus, I had work to do. I knew it was time to snap (click?) a few photos, then let the little guy go.

Worn out and probably more than a little irked, Clicky II nonetheless still had a few good clicks left, which made photographing the clicking mechanism next to

impossible. I settled for a few shots of the beetle’s topside, made a few notes regarding date and location, then placed the beetle and its hunk of bark back outside where they both belong.

This coming week’s forecast calls for warmer weather, which means arthropods of all types will be on the move.

If you’re out and about and have the opportunity, try tipping over a rock or rolling over a log (of course remembering to put it back when you’re done.) Look carefully among the ants, millipedes, centipedes and spiders to see if you can spot a beetle or two.

You never know, you just might find something that clicks for you.

Federal prosecutors have brought charges against the store owner who sold synthetic marijuana to 19-year-old Max Dobner of Aurora, who later died crashing his car into a house in Batavia Township in June 2011.

Glen Ellyn resident Ruby Mohsin, 52, who had owned the Cigar Box in Westfield Fox Valley Mall in Aurora, was charged with conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance. The store closed in the summer of 2011.

Her former employee, Mohammad Khan, 63, of Glendale H e i g h t s , a l s o Max w a s c h a r g e d Dobner with conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.

The criminal complaint was filed April 16. Their attorneys could not be reached for comment.

After the death of her son, Max Dobner’s mother, Karen Dobner, started the To The Maximus Foundation, a nonprofit group that advocates and educates against synthetic marijuana and other synthetic drugs. Dobner said the charges give her satisfaction.

“It helps to know that there is some justice,” Karen Dobner said. “You can’t just sell drugs in the mall and get away with it.”

Karen Dobner said she aggressively pursued prosecution.

“The more prosecutions we have, the more the mes-

sage goes out that you can’t get away with it,” she said.

“And it may take a while for us to get you, but we’re going to get you.”

According to the criminal complaint, Mohsin sold three one-gram packages of synthetic marijuana to Max Dobner and his friend at approximately 2:33 p.m. June 14, 2011.

Shortly after the sale, Max Dobner smoked a portion of the package of iAroma Hypnotic and “suffered a severe adverse reaction.”

The complaint stated that approximately 4 p.m., Max Dobner got in his car and began driving at a high rate of speed in an erratic manner before running a stop sign, driving into a yard, hitting a retaining wall, and catapulting into a home in Batavia Township, just south of the Mooseheart campus. He was killed in the crash.

State police lab results and the Kane County coroner’s autopsy detected the presence of JWH-210, a known ingredient in synthetic marijuana, in Max Dobner’s body.

The complaint stated that between February and April 2011, a “concerned citizen” warned Mohsin that young people were smoking the socalled potpourri products sold in her store and experiencing serious physical and mental side effects.

According to the complaint, Mohsin and Khan continued to sell synthetic marijuana after Max Dobner’s death.

On Aug. 4, 2011, Khan sold two packages of synthetic marijuana to an undercover Aurora police officer, the complaint stated.

Pass the pie, then fix state Food fans will love what the Illinois House cooked up last week.

Pumpkin pie was voted as the state’s official pie.

Even though Illinois’ finances are in perilous shape, and budgets are being sliced right and left, perhaps we shouldn’t begrudge lawmakers a short break from the serious problems at hand.

A lawmaker from Morton, Republican state Rep. Keith Sommer, put the legislation on the House’s menu. He represents a large pumpkin-growing region, and touted the fact that Illinois produces about 85 percent of pumpkin consumed in the nation.

House members apparently swallowed his argument; the vote was 108 in favor, 3 opposed.

So, why not name a state pie? We have a state fruit (Gold Rush apple) and state snack food (popcorn), not to mention about 20 other officially designated state somethings-or-other.

Of course, Chicago area lawmakers might protest that Chicago-style pizza “pie” ought not to be discounted. Indeed, all three “no” votes came from Chicago area lawmakers.

The state’s apple and peach growers might also feel left out, as the fruits they produce make excellent pie fillings.

The Senate has yet to weigh in on the official state pie bill. Time remains for fanciers of apple, peach, cherry, blueberry, rhubarb, strawberry, and other pies to press their cases.

We hope bipartisan support for the state pie bill leaves such a good taste in the mouths of lawmakers that they agree to cooperate on larger measures.

And cooperate they must.

The upcoming state budget for fiscal 2016 is expected to have a $6 billion hole that must be filled somehow – and not by pumpkins.

Solving the state’s problems shouldn’t be considered pie in the sky. Illinoisans made the mess, and they must fix the mess.

If lawmakers fail, we don’t believe they’ll deserve a slice of the new official state pie.

Let them eat humble pie instead.

The ‘promposal’ is an invitation to teen angst

By PETULA DVORAK The Washington Post WASHINGTON – A high school junior demolishing a bagel described the pressure.

“Yeah, it’s stressful, because you have to do it right,” he explained on his way to class at Yorktown High School in Arlington, Virginia.

SATs? AP tests? College applications?

“And it’s gotta be big. I mean, BIG,” said one of his pals.

“And public. It has to be really public,” added another, and the weight of it all seemed to droop his slight shoulders a little more.

What’s stressing out these 17-year-old peach-fuzz boys laden with backpacks and books and athletic bags?

Promposals. This is the phenomenon – celebrated in movies and Allstate car insurance commercials – in which teens ask each other to prom in increasingly elaborate and creative ways.

Sounds kind of cute and harmless. But here’s the thing that floored me this year: A study that Visa released this week on teen credit card spending revealed that the average prom costs $919

a couple, with $324 going toward the promposal. Crazy, right?

Proms have become mini weddings, with promposals part of what the boys at Yorktown described as a “tradition.”

Check it out on Twitter – #promposal will show you some of the outrageous ones, with Richie Riches hiring helicopters to descend on the lucky girl or planes to skywrite “Prom?”

It’s become one more way to make the confusing, stressful, divisive and cliquish tendencies of high school even worse, further underscoring the haves and the have-nots.

Of course, not all promposals are pricey. There are Tumblrs and Pinterest pages filled with promposals – the question spelled out in tea lights on her porch, in pepperoni on her pizza, in tacos.

Guys (and girls, too) do scavenger hunts. But one kid popped the question written on a mainsail unfurled on a sailing trip.

The whole prom thing has gotten out of hand. “The money.

That’s the problem. If she says yes, you’re spending so much money,” one of the high school juniors I talked to said.

And the promposal only ratch-

ets up the pressure. The Yorktown juniors already are plotting and planning, trying to make sure their big ask is epic.

“I’m going to find out the college she wants to go to. And I’m going to make it look like a college acceptance letter. But it will be inviting her to prom,” one forward-thinking junior told me.

Some school districts in Texas and Pennsylvania have banned on-campus promposals because they’ve become so disruptive and divisive.

But plenty of educators enjoy them.

“Oh, they’re fun,” said Nardos King, principal of Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria, Virginia, which has a large population of military kids from nearby Fort Belvoir and not the kind of student body with the means to hire helicopters.

But she would probably try to put the brakes on any high-dollar ideas. “It’s not like this is a marriage proposal,” she said.

My worry is that it’s another activity that emphasizes popularity and leaves the less-cool feeling lousy about themselves. Kind of like electing a prom king and queen.

SOUND OFF In the Kane County Chronicle there was an article about the North Aurora trustees deciding on a new logo and motto for the village of North Aurora. This logo and motto was designed and written by a business out of Geneva. I’d like to know why our village trustees and administrator, Steve Bosco, didn’t go to the population of North Aurora for ideas and designs? I know there are some good artists that could draw up a good logo and other citizens who could have come up with a good motto. Why did they have to go to a Geneva firm to come up with ideas on a North Aurora project when we, the citizens of North Aurora, were never involved or asked to decide on a logo and motto for our own village?

The Batavia grade schools need the help of the Batavia Police Department before a young student or teacher gets seriously hurt each morning and afternoon while each Batavia grade school has student drop-off and pickup times. The Batavia Police Department needs to direct traffic and require all cars to abide by all traffic rules and signage at the Batavia grade schools. More and more parents are coming to the schools at these times, and the risk for serious injury is ever increasing. Batavia Police Department: Please help before someone gets seriously hurt.

TRADITION DRIVES SUCCESS Saints sustain program profile en route to 600-plus wins

T. CHARLES – Eighttime state champions.

Six-hundred and three total victories. An 88-match streak without defeat. These are a few remarkable statistics that few high schools have the ability to say about any athletic program.

St. Charles High School – now St. Charles East – can, thanks to a number of talented athletes who have passed through the girls soccer program.

From Danielle Thomas and Marci Miller (now Jobson) to Anne Poulin and Ruth Poulin (now Vostal). Laurie Seidl’s 115 career goals. Goalkeeper Merit Elzey’s 61 career shutouts or star forward Patrice Feulner, just to name a few.

These women have left quite a legacy and tradition behind for any player who ever will don the Saints orange and black colors with the

One of the most notable stretches came before St. Charles split into East and North for the 2000-01 school year. Before the split, the Saints and coach Joe Moreau (198 wins over eight seasons) won five straight state championships.

Ex-St. Charles coaches, players now head coaches elsewhere • SOCCER Continued from page 17 Vostal was a standout forward from 1991 to 1994 and is now the head girls soccer coach at St. Charles North, where her successes include 12 straight regional titles and a trio of top three state tournament finishes entering this spring.

Vostal could not speak more highly of the outstanding youth and feeder programs that St. Charles has to develop young soccer players, a large part of why she believes they created a dynasty.

“When you have such well-developed programs preparing athletes for this level, it is such an added bonus,” Vostal said. “There’s no doubt we had talented players, but the amount of success we had has a lot to do with the coaching, as well.”

Another noticeable outcome from these teams is that some of the players, including Vostal, have become coaches themselves after playing under Tim Dailey and Moreau.

Vostal thinks playing under coaches who displayed such passion for the game helps her today as a coach.

“Looking back, now that I’m a coach, it makes me realize how hard that actually is to accomplish,” she said.

“These guys set the tone and showed what it took to be successful. I really think a lot of that rubbed off on me as a coach. It has helped me become a better coach today.”

Jobson was another standout goal scorer from the 1992 and 1994 state championship teams. She has held head coaching positions at Baylor and Northern Illinois and still is with the Baylor program.

Jobson maintains family ties to the program through her niece, East sophomore forward Claire Rasmussen.

Another coach who sustained success before Moreau was Dailey, the school’s all-time wins leader. In his 13 seasons at the helm, Dailey won 238 matches and three state titles (1990, 1992, 1994).

Moreau said Dailey played a vital role in how his girls came to practice and play each day.

“He set the standard and

There’s no l’accent aigu over the “e,” nor any Cody Regis speech inflection suggesting Regis hails from anywhere other than his native Tucson, Arizona.

Regis’ family did relocate to southern California, and he later played at UCLA, where his ties to the Bruins’ blue and gold ultimately steered him to the land of bleu, blanc et rouge – and now the Cougars.

“The ball rolled pretty fast, yeah,” said Regis, a minor league free agent of the parent Arizona Diamondbacks.

Oui. Regis graduated from UCLA in 2013 after batting .268 over 232 games and 218 starts in his collegiate career.

He’s the only Bruin to play in three College World Series.

That distinction wasn’t enough to warrant selection in the Major League Baseball

First-Year Player Draft, but Regis, 23, stayed passionate and in shape in case the game ever beckoned again.

In 2014, it did. UCLA’s baseball alumni association president contacted Regis about an opening on a team in France he had played for about 20 years earlier that competed in the country’s Division Elite.

Armed with a glove, bat and a penchant for studying people thanks to his sociology degree, Regis took a flier.

The season consisted of 30-plus games, with Regis comparing it to a professional soccer structure. The Paris University Club competed in a French league on weekends and against other teams from Europe during the week.

“It’s still the same in terms of the rules and all that. How the game is played,” Regis said. “It’s diverse. It was pretty crazy. It was a life experience to see three, four different languages being spoken on the field at the same time. But, I mean, just getting to play baseball and go overseas and visit Europe, travel the world, it was just awesome.”

Mattison referred Regis to an agent, who introduced him to independent league coaches, who in turn led Regis to a D’backs scout.

“I have so many friends from UCLA, and so many of them are playing somewhere now, so it’s hard to keep in touch with everyone,” Regis said. “But we have the group messages. We’ll chat it up a little bit here and there.”

These days, Regis doesn’t have to worry about the majority of his teammates understanding his native tongue.

He took a different route to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark than many others, to be sure, but he’s there.

“I’m loving it,” Regis said.

“I’m getting to play baseball every day. You can’t really ask for much better than that.”

Not until they start serving crème brûlée in the clubhouse, anyway.

Tim Ludke limited last weekend’s Sycamore Speedway practice session to six laps before returning to pit row.

Nothing for the Late Models star from St. Charles to be alarmed about entering today’s season-opening full show. In fact, it was quite the contrary.

“It felt that good,” Ludke said. “I didn’t want to chance it. For one, the track was kind of wet. And two, if it’s good, don’t mess with it, you know what I mean.”

A Speedway stipulation took that last part – and the 27-year-old’s lease on dirt track racing – for a spin last year.

By winning successive Late Models points championships in 2012 and 2013, Ludke was, by rule, forced out of his circuit for one season.

He briefly debated moving up in class to Super Late Models in 2014. The learning curve and, above all, the cost associated with developing a new car kept him away.

Balking at a rule that nixed a memorable homer I simply was doing my job.

It also took away a kid’s first high school home run.

On April 18, I saw something that in nearly 30 years of umpiring, I never had seen before.

With a runner on base, St. Charles East pitcher Stephen Podany failed to come set from the stretch position.

I hollered, “That’s a balk!”

The batter, St. Francis’ Brett Whelton, heard my call but it happened so quickly that it didn’t stop him from swinging.

“I was just focusing on the at-bat,” the Glen Ellyn resident said. “I didn’t process it at the time. I heard you yell balk and I turned around and thought, ‘Oh my God, there goes my first high school home run.’ ” If Whelton had been playing in the big leagues, then he

would’ve trotted around the bases. Unfortunately for him, the rules of Major League Baseball differ from those of the National Federation of State High School Associations.

After listing 13 ways a pitcher can balk, MLB Rule 8.05 states the following penalty: “The ball is dead, and each runner shall advance one base without liability to be put out, unless the batter reaches first on a hit, an error, a base on balls, a hit batter, or otherwise, and all other runners advance at least one base, in which case the play proceeds without reference to the balk.”

Rule 5-1-1k of the NFHS, which is what the IHSA adheres to, declares: “Ball becomes dead immediately when: a balk or illegal pitch is committed.”

QUILL THE UMPIRE CHRIS ROLLIN WALKER Whelton swung at and missed the ensuing pitch, but lined the next one for an RBI double. He finished the game 3 for 3 with three doubles and a pair of RBIs in a 12-4 loss to the Saints, but still is pursuing that first home run.

“We have a little home run competition on our team and [my teammates] made a joke about how I’m in the home run race, but never mind, I’m not, because a balk was called,” Whelton said. “They gave me some [trouble] after that.”

I never saw the home run leave the field. I watched it scream off Whelton’s bat, but never turned around to watch

it go. I had assumed that it was a goner, but didn’t verify it until after the game when I asked my plate partner, Craig.

Although I got the call correct, I felt bad for Whelton.

Regardless of the level of play, home runs are special, and that ball really exploded off his bat. Whelton deserved to jog around the bases and get mobbed by his teammates, but often times, this game is unfair.

“After the game I commended him,” St. Francis coach Nick Hall said. “For all the emotion that goes into a home run, for him to come back and then hit a pitch into the gap, that says a lot.”

Hall, who played at Northern Illinois as well as professionally with the Phillies and Padres organizations, has obviously seen a lot of base-

ball, but he too couldn’t recall something like this.

“I’ve seen some balls hit hard after balks, but never a home run,” he said. “It’s one of the calls where we wish you guys missed it, but you guys got it right. It was definitely a balk.”

One thing that I believe isn’t right is the rule. Why penalize Whelton and the offensive team? Wouldn’t it make the most sense to follow the same rule as Major League Baseball?

I know Whelton would undoubtedly agree.

Most faces in the crowd recognized Ludke and told him they missed seeing his No. 20 weaving through the dirt oval. Six laps or otherwise, last weekend’s practice enticed them anew.

“We do have a lot of fans that are excited to see him back,” Speedway assistant promoter Brett Gerace said. “We had a lot of fans who didn’t understand why he had to take that year off. It will definitely be a big thing.”

Ludke remains eager. Greeting and hearing feedback from fans admittedly humbled him, but this is someone accustomed to racing around his office, not running for it.

Now he’s back, a survivor of what drivers call the “forceout rule,” six laps into his return.

“It was incredible,” Ludke said. “It was really cool to be back in it.”

Cadets beat Chargers in weather-shortened game

ELGIN – It is a given that strange things happen when archrivals Aurora Central Catholic and Marmion meet.

Friday’s baseball game between the teams, played at Judson University, was no different, but no one wanted to see a play like the one that ended the game in the top of the sixth inning.

Marmion batter Garrett Hiles attempted a bunt with teammate Austin Black on third base. Hiles missed the ball. In his attempt to score, Black collided with ACC catcher Michael Bieterman.

Black was ejected from the game for not sliding on a close play. While the Chargers staff attended to Bieterman, who laid on his stomach for several minutes, the umpires called the game because of the steady rain, giving the Cadets a 4-2 win.

“Every time we play these guys something strange happens, like the weather or something,” Marmion coach Dave Rakow said. “It’s unfortunate that it ended the way it did today.”

“It was a squeeze. [Hiles] missed the ball and the catcher … was off the plate, up the third-base line. Our kid was trying to go down to slide. I

think he was so far away from the base he hadn’t gotten down to slide yet. There was a collision and by rule, [that] is an ejection. I don’t think there is any malicious intent; Black was trying to get down and it was unfortunate.”

Said ACC coach Sean Bieterman of his catcher and brother: “I think he’ll be OK. His shoulder, which took the brunt of the collision, seems intact. He is one of our strongest players.”

It was only the second loss of the season for the Chargers (15-2).

“The kids played hard and made a couple of mistakes,” Sean Bieterman said. “I’m not worried about wins and losses, I just worry about kids playing the game the right way.”

ACC, the home team, took an early lead, scoring a run in the first and third innings.

Chris Saltijeral scored both runs. In the first, he came home on a Ryan Poplawski RBI single. In the third, he scored on a passed ball.

Marmion (5-14) thought it had scored a run in the second, when Brandon McPherson scored from third when Hiles reached base on an error.

However, Hiles was called out and the run was removed from the scoreboard when it was discovered Hiles batted out of order.

As a senior captain of the St. Charles North girls soccer team, Hanna Durocher has led by example. She has scored eight goals this season, and has dished out handful of assists to make the most out of her final high school season. The senior forward has led the North Stars to a 9-2-1 record to start the season. In the latest edition of the Weekend Chitchat, Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey touched base with Durocher before the North Stars’ 5-1 win against York on Friday.

Here’s an edited transcript:

The team is off to a very strong start this season. What has been the key?

First off, I think we have a lot of talented players.

Whether the players are returning or new, there are a lot of good, talented soccer players on our team. Our chemistry as a team is getting better, too. That’s what we needed to work on most, but

I don’t think it has completely hit me yet. I have tried not to think about it, but at the same time, I want to leave my mark. It’s a bittersweet feeling to think about, but I’m doing everything I can to make sure I make the most of everything this season.

You have been involved in a lot of the scoring for the team this year. How have you been

able to get off to such a good start?

I always put a lot of pressure on myself. Being a senior and being a four-year varsity player, I know what Coach (Ruth) Vostal expects from me. I have a lot of experience, so I know what I need to go out and do each time I’m out there.

The game with St. Charles East isn’t too far away [May 9 at East]. Are you guys looking forward to playing them?

Freshman Gia Wahlberg has been vital up front, as well.

What has worked so well with you two?

We are both pretty dynamic players. We have different, but strong skill sets, and I think that’s something you need all over the field for your team to be successful.

Why has Coach Vostal been such a good coach for your team?

Not only has she been here a long time [the only coach in the school’s history], but she has developed a tradition here. She is a great leader and she is very well respected by everyone that plays for her. When you are successful

It’s not something we are overly focused on. We haven’t really talked about it at all.

We know they are a good team with some really good players, and we know it’s going to be a great game when we do play them.

What club team/coach do you play for?

Sockers FC in Schaumburg. ... The coach of our team is Trey Bradberry.

What are your plans for after high school? Do you plan to play soccer at the next level?

I’m attending Florida Gulf Coast University next year. I originally looked into playing soccer there, but it did not end up working. But I don’t plan to stop playing soccer.

I’m going to play club soccer there, and hopefully, try and walk on to the team at some point.

You should have seen the grin on Noah’s face when he told me that he may have left one of his dress shoes in Nice. You know, the shoes he’s supposed to wear to prom next month.

“Nice. You left them in Nice?” I asked, already laughing, because – well – what else could I do?

“Call the hotel,” I said, realizing that his cellphone was still on a cheap, 30-day international calling plan.

Noah’s grin evaporated. “And ask for housekeeping.”

He groaned.

“My French isn’t THAT good,” he said.

“It’ll be good practice,” I suggested. “Yeah. ‘Hola? Lost and found, por favor?’ ”

“Right. It’s all I got, bud. Give it a whirl. Either you do it or I will, and, well … they’re both Romance languages, right? Close enough?” I shrugged.

Noah picked his poison. Not wanting an audience, he headed to another room and made the call. I sighed.

“But I scored a bargain when I bought them,” I whined to the big red dog at my feet, who waited patiently for his boy to walk him.

I remember that day, a couple of years ago, when we lucked upon a sidewalk sale at Giesche shoes in Geneva,

two days before heading to a wedding.

I was pumped. He’d already outgrown the pair I bought him the year before, and I’d hoped he’d get to wear these more than once. He wore them twice.

For weeks before this trip to France, I urged him to try them on. He finally did, the night before he got on the plane. He wasn’t wearing any socks at the time, but, hey, he wasn’t complaining – and he could walk – so in the bag they went.

I winced. There wasn’t much we could do about it by then, anyhow.

And now he’s down to one. I’m not exactly sure what went down when Noah called the hotel, but when he returned to the kitchen a few minutes later he triumphantly reported that they did not, in fact, have its mate.

So, I guess we’ll just have to add shoes to the list of things we need to pay for – for the prom. (I didn’t have

the heart to make Noah pay for a new pair, since I have a hunch he’d actually outgrown them.) But hope springs eternal.

“Hey, Sean, you don’t by any chance have Noah’s other dress shoe, do you?”

I asked his one of his travel companions, when we ran into him at a college fair last week. No dice. Darn. ’Tis the season to plunk down my debit card, I guess.

Someday I’ll get to France, myself.

I’ll sunbathe on a beach in Nice, wander through little galleries in Paris, sleep in a French Chateau, get lost on a bike in Provence …. Yes. But first, my baby needs a pair of new shoes.

The semi-tropical shaving brush tree an unusual beauty About 15 years ago, my husband and I were walking along Simonton Street in Key West, and we saw what appeared to be a colorful shaving brush on the sidewalk. We picked it up to examine this colorful, pink pompon-like flower. We looked up and saw a beautiful tree full of these unique pink flowers. What an unusual tree.

Being interested in gardening, I just had to learn more about this tree. It is a pseudobombax ellipticum, commonly known as the shaving brush tree. This deciduous tree is native to southern Mexico south to Honduras and El Salvador.

It is grown as an ornamental in Florida, Hawaii and other semi-tropical parts of the world.

It reaches 50 to 70 feet in height.

In spring, large cigar-like buds that grow 5 to 6 feet in length develop quickly as the temperatures increase.

Shortly afterward, bright pink shaving brush-like flowers topped with yellow pollen decorate bare branches much like our magnolia trees. The flowers, which also can be white, last

I’m sure the locals would consider the tree quite messy as it drops its flowers, but I think that is a small price to pay for a

tree that has some many transformations throughout the year.

Since my husband and I have only seen this tree in spring, I’m voting for a road trip sometime in summer or fall.

Read nutrition labels carefully when buying infant foods Dear Doctor K: I buy lots of ready-made infant and toddler foods for my little one. A friend told me I should make my own foods for my son at home. Are ready-made toddler foods unhealthy?

Dear Reader: Eating salty, sugary foods in childhood can set the stage for childhood obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Therefore, you might assume that foods created for infants and toddlers would be low in salt and sugar. But a recent study, published in the journal Pediatrics, found that infant and toddler foods might be less healthy than you think.

Using a national database, researchers looked at the amounts of sodium and sugar in more than 1,000 infant and toddler foods sold across the United States. The foods included infant and toddler dinners, snacks, fruits, vegetables, dry cereals, juices and desserts.

The researchers found that: • Most foods made only for infants were low in sodium and sugar, and did not have added sugar. That’s the good news.

• However, almost three out of four (72 percent) toddler dinners

Not surprisingly, most toddler desserts and juices contained added sugar. And snacks contained plenty of added sugar and salt.

The foods kids eat influence the tastes they like as adults.

Eating less salt and sugar in early childhood can help set good habits that lead to better health later in life.

If you have the time and inclination, then by all means, make your own toddler foods. But you can also make sure your child eats healthy, nutritious foods by making good choices at the grocery store: • Check servings and calories.

Don’t assume one package equals one serving. Look at how many calories are in each serving and give your child the proper serving size.

• Buy foods low in sodium.

Children ages 1 to 3 years should

consume less than 1,500 mg of sodium each day.

• Look for foods and drinks low in sugars. Sugars can be listed as sucrose, glucose, high-fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, maple syrup or fructose.

• Cut out soda and juice. This will reduce empty calories from added sugars.

• Give your child water and milk. Milk has a lot of nutrients that your child needs to stay healthy.

• Make sure your lifestyle is healthy, as well. You’d be surprised by how much your child notices when watching you. Your child is more likely to eat healthfully if you do.

The good news about commercially produced foods for infants and toddlers is that manufacturers are required to tell you the contents of their foods on the Nutrition Facts label. Spend a little time examining those labels. You’ll be doing your child a big favor.

Respectful men are in demand Dr. Wallace: Zack and I had been dating steadily for about seven months.

Before we got together, he had been going steady with someone else, but she dumped him for another guy. He was really hurt, but seemed to get over it when we started dating.

Then about two weeks ago, the ex-girlfriend decided Zack was her man again. She told him she’d made a mistake in dumping him and wanted him back. Zack told me he was sorry, but we had to break up because he had to find out if he still loved her.

True, but a bridge player who counts is much more likely to win than lose.

This week we have been looking at deals in which a defender has had to work out declarer’s hand distribution. Here is one more example.

Cover the South and East hands. South opens and closes the auction with his three-heart bid.

You lead the spade queen. When partner encourages with the nine, you continue with the spade two, which announces an initial fourcard holding. Partner wins with his king and shifts to the diamond two. When declarer plays low, you win with your ace and return the diamond 10 (high from a remaining doubleton). South wins with his queen and immediately leads the club nine. Do you win or duck?

South has a textbook pre-empt at unfavorable vulnerability: a good seven-card suit and 6-10 high-card points. You were close to a takeout double, and East might have balanced with a double. But if one of you had doubled, the other would have jumped to four spades, taking your side out of its depth.

Against a pre-empt, sometimes it is impossible to get into the auction and stop in time.

You must assume that East would have cashed a third spade trick if it were available. Also, East’s diamond-two switch indicated a four-card suit. So, South began with two spades, two diamonds and seven hearts. He must also have two clubs – play low smoothly. Yes, this risks conceding an overtrick, but it is your only chance to defeat the contract.
