here are a few people who I have met while on assignment that have touched my heart. Jim Wheeler was one of them. Before he retired as the golf pro at Pottawatomie Golf Course in St. Charles, he’d see me walk through the pro shop’s doors and the first thing he’d say was, “You’re not here to take my

picture, are you?”

Most of the time, I was there to photograph the many events, high school practices or tournaments held at the golf course.

But in January 2011, I was there just for him. It was the occasion of his retirement, and it was time for him to be photographed. He was cooperative, but I knew he

did not like the spotlight on him.

Since that day in January, I have seen Jim at almost every St. Charles high school football and basketball game, always with a smile and a chat. He was there in the stands, usually the same spot every time. Cheering on “his kids.” He loved to talk about the current players and all

of their accomplishments.

So it was with a heavy heart when I learned of Jim’s passing Tuesday. Jim was one-of-a-kind and will be so missed. I’m sure he’d also have something to say about his photo being in the newspaper again. Rest in peace, my friend.

Residents speak out on ComEd power line plan ELGIN – Until Sunday, Rachel Lange and her fiance had been living in the home they bought last July without knowing their property intersects with the proposed route for ComEd’s Grand Prairie Gateway project.

The news – which was delivered by neighbors – crushed the young couple, who voiced their concerns at a public hearing about the project Thursday night in downtown Elgin.

“Our voice matters and our opinion should be heard,” Lange said, earning a stand-

ing ovation from some gathered inside Hemmens Auditorium.

Hosted by the Illinois Commerce Commission, the public hearing was a chance for residents to comment on and ask questions about the ComEd’s proposal to run about 57 miles of new high-voltage power lines from its substation near Wayne, just east of the Kane County line, to its substation near Byron in Ogle County.

Fidel Marquez, a senior vice president with ComEd, briefly outlined the purpose for the new power lines and acknowledged it is not a popular topic for landowners it will affect.

“We are here because your concerns and questions do matter to us,” Marquez said.

Elgin resident John Tomasiewicz – who noted he previously provided testimony on such concerns as property values and health effects – urged ComEd to act responsibly for the public good.

“ComEd’s only motivation seems to be corporate greed,” he said. “Please stop acting like a corporate bully.”

Tomasiewicz said ComEd hasn’t met the burden justified for the project and has ignored concerns from the Bowes Creek residential community.

“The ICC is our last re-

sort,” Tomasiewicz said. “Do the right thing for the people.”

Connie Jones of the River Ridge subdivision in South Elgin encouraged members of the ICC to visit the residential areas to get a better picture of how close the proposed power lines will be to the residents.

She also noted ComEd workers have been working in the utility company’s easements.

“Has the decision been made?” Jones said.

Tim Polz of Hampshire said he is comfortable with ComEd’s proposed route. But, he said, he learned that afternoon that an alternative route might be under consideration

Geneva library board disagrees with PAC

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva library board members said they would support the release of closed meeting minutes and audio tape Thursday, but the majority plan to protest a nonbinding decision by the attorney general’s office that they held an illegal closed meeting last year.

At issue is a complaint by the Kane County Chronicle that the library board violated the Open Meetings Act on Oct. 24.

Earlier this month, the Illinois Attorney General Public Access Counselor issued a nonbinding decision that the board could not meet in closed session to discuss potential litigation, only that which is probable or immanent.

The public access counselor determined that the board’s remedy is to release the minutes and audio tape of that portion of the closed meeting.

Board member Steve Andersson read a statement disagreeing with the public access counselor’s decision, which the board majority supported, to send to the attorney general.

Says it will release closed session minutes In short, Andersson said the Open Meetings Act allows public bodies to close a meeting for pending litigation or an administrative tribunal.

“This has become a case of a teachable moment,” Andersson said.

Andersson said the public access counselor did not include itself – an administrative tribunal – as the reason why the board met in closed session – to meet with its attorney to discuss how to respond to a public access counselor’s appeal notice.

“The PAC does not consider itself part of the litigation process,” Andersson said. “It seemed to forget its own role.

It was not a future lawsuit, but the PAC administration

process of how to respond.”

Andersson said the board had a right to meet in closed session to discuss confidential material with its attorney outside of the public view “to make sure we were doing it right.”

Shivers disagreed, noting she voted against going into closed session that night because she did not agree the meeting should be closed.

Shivers said she agreed the information should be released, but not that the board should send a message to the public access counselor.

“The opinion is incorrect when applied to the facts in this,” Andersson said. “Our Geneva library board is a steadfast supporter of the Open Meetings Act ... and

fully supports transparency in government and supports the Attorney General Public Access Counselor.”

Andersson said that does not mean the public access counselor always gets it correct.

“Lack of experience leads to mistakes,” Andersson said, referring to the public access counselor’s four years of experience when compared to the “80 years of legal experience sitting in this room.”

Andersson was referring to the fact that he is an attorney, as are other members of the library board, including Pat Lord, Shivers and Travis Ketterman.

Andersson said the state’s public access counselor are understaffed amid many requests for review by the public and media.

“Now we know about it, and you are going to hear from us,” he said.

Larson said the book took eight months to put together.

He was approached to write the book because of his craft beer reviews at www.theperfectlyhappyman.com, a website he co-founded in 2009.

The site initially was a way for him and his friends who live in other cities to connect by talking about different beers, but it grew to a formal review website with other contributors.

Larson said seeking out craft beers is well worth the time and money.

Man gets 23 years for role in N. Aurora home invasion KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com An Aurora man was sentenced Wednesday to 23 years in prison for his role in a North Aurora home invasion that left a couple terrorized and a dog dead.

Quintin D. Mullen, 23, was convicted in February of home invasion, armed violence and armed robbery, all Class X felonies; two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class 1 felony; two counts of aggravated unlawful restraint, each a Class 3 felony; and one count of aggravated animal cruelty, a Class 4

felony.

Mullen had waived his right to a jury trial.

On March 1, 2013, Mullen and an unidentified man entered a home in the 200 block of Laurel Drive in North Aurora.

The other man threatQuintin D. ened to shoot Mullen the two residents if they didn’t remain seated on a sofa, and Mullen – whom the victims considered a friend – ran upstairs in search of a safe he knew contained money,

according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

While Mullen was upstairs, the gunman reportedly shot the residents’ pit bull terrier mix three times. The dog soon died.

The men left the house with the safe and cash, according to the release.

“A person who is so greedy that he would betray his friends for money when given the opportunity to do so, particularly as Mr. Mullen did, belongs in prison,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said, according the release.

Minor injuries for bicyclist in collision with vehicle

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A teenage bicyclist got “really lucky” Thursday when a collision with a vehicle resulted in only minor injuries, St. Charles Police Department spokeswoman Lisa Blackwell said.

The accident happened at about 3 p.m. at Red Gate Road and River’s Ridge Drive, an intersection near St. Charles North High School that is controlled by a traffic light.

The 16-year-old bicyclist was cited for riding a bicycle through a red light, Blackwell said.

The motorist was not ticketed.

The teen suffered from some road rash, Blackwell said, describing the injuries as minor.

She said this is a reminder that bicyclists need to obey the rules of the road.

“He got really lucky,” Blackwell said.

reported a scam Tuesday, April 22. She reportedly got a call from a company purportedly selling anti-virus software. She reportedly bought it for $260 and allowed remote access to her computer. Several pop-up windows asked for her credit card confirmation, and she did not recognize the name or credit card number on the confirmation, she told police. When she called the number provided by the company, the person who answered had no knowledge of the situation.

ST. CHARLES – James “Jim” Wheeler, 68, St. Charles, passed away suddenly Tuesday, April 22, 2014. He was born May 14, 1945, in Peoria to James E. and Marion Wheeler.

Following high school, Jim received his bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University in education. Jim proudly served his country in Vietnam, and was awarded a Purple Heart in addition to other medals. In 1975 Jim married his wife, Patti; and raised their two daughters in St. Charles. Prior to his retirement in 2011, Jim was the PGA Golf Professional at Pottawatomie Golf Course for more than 30 years.

He also proudly coordinated the area’s Toys for Kids Program in conjunction with the Salvation Army.

He is survived by his loving wife, Patti; two daughters, Amy Lyn (Mark) Macechko of Oxford, Ohio, and Kimberly Ann (Matthew) Prall of Oxford, Ohio; five grandchildren, Abigail, Matthew, Kaylyn, Molly and William; his sister, Carol (Charles) Zindel; nephews, Kevin, Keith (Sue) and Evan; and nieces, Debbie (Mike), Chelsea and Mary Sanford.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Police: Sugar Grove man charged after driving on farm field

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A Sugar Grove man faces criminal charges on accusations he drove circles on a farm field at night and threatened a witness with a gun, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

Police responded to the 42W900 block of Jericho Road near Route 47 in Sugar Grove Township at about 12:35 a.m.

Wednesday for a report of a red Dodge truck driving circles in a field, police reported.

A witness reportedly told police he flashed his lights to

get the truck driver’s attention.

“The driver said he thought it was OK to do what he was doing because the field had not been planted yet,” police reported.

The witness reportedly told Jacob P. Smith the motorist to leave the property. The report indicates the order wasn’t well received.

“The driver stated that he had a gun and was not afraid to use it,” police reported.

The driver did, however, flee on Route 47, but Sugar

Grove police reportedly found a vehicle matching the truck’s description at the home of Jacob P. Smith in the 200 block of Oxford Avenue in Sugar Grove.

Corn stalks and leaves were stuck underneath the truck, and the engine still was warm, police said. Police described

Smith as appearing highly intoxicated and said in the report that he denied driving through the field and claimed to be home for two hours.

The witness, however, identified Smith as the driver, police reported. Smith, 34, was charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct.

Once at the Kane County Jail, he also was charged with possession of marijuana after authorities found the drug in his person, police reported.

The farm’s owner told police he did not yet know if damage was done to the field.

Smith is expected in court May 7.

GENEVA – In the spring of 1950, Geneva resident Gloria Cregier Emma was handpicked by Kate Raftery, founder of The Littler Traveler, to pose for a photo.

Just shy of her 20th birthday, Gloria wore a burlap skirt, pink sash, white cotton blouse and pink Capezio shoes as she stood on the staircase of the shop’s entry, at 404 S. Third St., Geneva. The shoes were the focus of the photo because Capezio, which originally made shoes for dancers, were to begin making them for all women.

Sixty-four years later and just shy of her 84th birthday, Gloria Emma will re-enact the photograph at 9:30 a.m. today on same entry staircase at The Little Traveler. Her daughter, Terry Emma, executive director of the Geneva History Museum, said Little Traveler owner Michael Simon is letting the Emma family in early before the store opens at 10 a.m.

The 1950 photograph was printed in the spring edition of The Little Traveler newsletter “The Almanack.” Simon plans to include both photos in the 2014 June edition of the newsletter.

Gloria Emma said her children have talked about re-enacting the photograph for years.

“It’s just finally come to pass,” Gloria Emma said. “I better do it while I can still get up those stairs.”

Gloria Emma said she will be dressed similarly for the redo in a white dress, but with silver shoes.

The Alzheimer’s Association Greater Illinois Chapter is seeking volunteers to participate in the 12th annual Bankers Life and Casualty Company’s Forget Me Not Days, which will be May 16 and May 17.

This fundraiser will bring volunteers as well as Bankers agents and employees to streets and storefronts as a way to raise awareness of and funds for Alzheimer’s disease.

Volunteers will work with their local Alzheimer’s Association office to learn where they will be stationed, receiving gardening aprons and

canisters to collect donations on the day of the event. In exchange for donations, volunteers will hand out specially marked packets of Forget-MeNot flower seeds.

On Jan. 1, Illinois residents were allowed for the first time to apply for the ability to carry guns in a concealed fashion. Illinois was the last state to allow concealed carry.

The Kane County Chronicle is exploring the impact of the state’s new concealed-carry law. This is the first part in a two-part series.

According to the new law, a handgun carried on or about a person must be concealed from view of the public or on or about a person within a vehicle. In order to apply for a concealed-carry license, most applicants first must receive 16 hours of concealed-carry firearms training provided by an Illinois State Police-approved instructor.

One also needs a firearm owner identification card to apply for a concealed carry license. Yankle has had a FOID card since January 2010, he said.

“You have to go through a general safety class on firearms,” Yankle said. “They teach you about negligence.

You just can’t have your firearms laying around your house so your neighbor’s child comes over and plays with them. You are totally held responsible for that because you didn’t store the weapon properly.”

Participants also are taught to “only use your

weapon if it’s a life-or-death situation,” Yankle said.

“It’s up to you to defend yourself,” said Tingler, who is the attorney for Hinckley-based Safe Side Tactical, which provides concealed-carry training. “The police can’t be everywhere.”

In order to apply for a concealed-carry license, a person must first receive 16 hours of concealed-carry firearms training provided by an Illinois State Police-approved instructor.

Hinckley-based Safe Side Tactical is among those approved to provide training, and a full list of instructors is available at the Illinois State Police website, www. isp.state.il.us, along with a list of revoked instructors.

Chicago attorney Ava George Stewart, who has a firearm owner identification card, said she believes Illinois was right in implementing a concealed-carry law and that it will make people safer. But she believes the way the law is written opens itself up to a court challenge.

“I’ve always thought that there should be a license and a way for people to comply with the law,” Stewart said.

“I believe the best way for people to be safe is to be trained and know how to operate and use a weapon safely. I think the challenges are going to come based on how onerous the requirements are. It’s going to be a problem for the consumer trying to sort out who is actually certified and what are the requirements of the

Paul Warren, a concealed-carry instructor who owns Safe Side Tactical, said he has been reminding students that the law is new and is subject to interpretation.

“In every class that I teach, I want people to understand that there is a black-and-white and a gray,” Warren said. “We have no case law; we have no interpretation from the courts. There is going to be a lot of cases going through the court. If it’s questionable whether you should take a gun, whether it is legal or not, don’t take a gun, until you get some clarification.”

Illinois was the last state in the nation to allow concealed carry. Tingler believes the law is overdue.

“Illinois took too long,” Tingler said. “This could have been done 10 to 15 years ago.”

St. Charles resident Gary Fernandes is currently going through the training to receive his concealed-carry license. Fernandes, who already is a gun owner, sees the new law as making society safer.

“If your family is in harm’s way, you have the ability to protect them,” he said. “You never want to use it. If you have guns in your home, you need to know how to use them.”

Since the state doesn’t have a standardized curriculum for concealed-carry training, Safe Side Tactical had to develop its own.

Warren said he would have preferred that Illinois set up the curriculum that other states were using rather than having instructors come up with their own curriculum.

For those who are being trained by multiple instructors, the lack of standardized curriculum can lead to “a lack of consistency,” Warren said.

Those going through the class are reminded of the responsibility that goes along with concealed carry.

“You can’t just pull your gun out and threaten somebody with it,” Warren said.

“You have to be in fear for your life, or else you could find yourself being charged with criminal offenses.”

Warren believes that the new law will have an effect.

“It will make a difference in a criminal’s mind,” Warren said. “Now they don’t know who has a gun and who doesn’t.”

because, like 20 years ago, they had a domestic violence conviction, even though they’ve had no other charges since then.”

Individual law enforcement agencies can voice objections if they have had prior contact with a person who is applying for a concealed-carry license.

“The board that controls the concealed-carry permits will review it and decide whether it will issue you a permit or not,” Warren said.

“The state police has put in quite a few, if not more, requirements than other states.”

The 16 hours of training is the longest amount required by any state, said Bob Tingler, an attorney for Safe Side Tactical who also helped write the curriculum for its concealed-carry training.

“Some states require four hours; some require eight,” Tingler said.

He added he is not necessarily opposed to Illinois requiring 16 hours of training, “it’s just interesting that we’re the last state, and we have the longest training,” he said.

Warren encouraged those applying for a concealed-carry license to obtain additional training beyond the 16 hours that the state requires.

About 125 students at Faith Christian Schools cheered the loudest for Flash, a 42-pound sulcata tortoise, to be declared the victor of the race. He stood his ground at the start of a makeshift race track in the school’s gym surrounded by the students.

His opponent was Daisy, a 15-pound short-haired domestic rabbit who turned away from the race course and toward her owner, Jeanne Robbins.

The two-animal showdown was held Thursday in the school’s gym as part of a tie-in activity with the first-graders reading Aesop’s Fables, which includes a story about a tortoise who outraces a hare that decided to nap during the contest. At first, only the preschool through third-grade classes were going to attend, but when word of the race spread, all of the students ended up watching, said Lisa Haboush, the school’s first-grade teacher.

Haboush said that she likes organizing special events such as Thursday’s race to engage students with reading.

“I’ve always loved children’s literature,” Haboush said. “I just like to bring some

fun into learning ... by making things come to life.”

Haboush had her friends bring in their pets to compete in front of the students. Angie Neylon, Flash’s owner, said she was nervous about him participating because it was his first outing away from home.

Flash behaved, and the students really seemed to enjoy the event, Haboush said.

Before the race, students predicted the winner by coloring in either a picture of a tortoise or a hare and placing it in one of the school hallways.

The hare was the clear favorite because everyone thought that it would be faster, said first-grader Anna Heredia, 7.

Heredia said the race was boring at first because there wasn’t any movement. She did enjoy being able to touch Flash’s shell and Daisy’s fur after the race was stopped.

Heredia said that she does look forward to reading more fables because she was able to see one play out in front of her.

“It was really weird that the tortoise did win,” she said.

CHARLES – A St. Charles East High graduate is suing her former school district – along with its school board, six drill team coaches, two athletic directors and two principals – on accusations they did nothing to stop ongoing bullying and harassment against her, according to a lawsuit filed this month.

Daniella Kapusta is seeking more than $50,000 in damages.

Kapusta – who attended the school from fall 2009 to spring 2013 – claims in the lawsuit that her teammates on the St. Charles School District 303 drill team called her derogatory names, spread false rumors about her and ostracized her.

Her teammates’ actions included forcing her participation in an “initiation” ritual that involved Kapusta wearing an “embarrassing costume” and performing “humiliating actions” in front of others, according to the lawsuit.

According to the suit, the incidents began after Kapusta was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which happened in July 2010.

The suit alleges that a school administrator, “instead of in-

tervening and putting an end to the bullying and hazing rituals, told plaintiff to ‘ignore’ her teammates and that ‘girls will be girls.’ ” The suit alleges that on Jan. 13, 2011, during a dance team practice, Kapusta was slapped in the face by a teammate.

It alleges that when Kapusta reported the incident she was told to leave practice by coaches and “was told that she was not welcome on the team.”

According to the suit, the bullying continued after that incident, and Kapusta was mocked and called names in front of coaches, but the coaches “did nothing to end the bullying and harassment.”

The suit alleges that the defendants knew or should have known that Kapusta was being verbally and physically bullied but “failed to take any action whatsoever to end the verbal and physical bullying, despite being put on notice multiple times that such bullying was occurring.” According to the suit, in May 2012, Kapusta was hospitalized in an outpatient program, because of “suicidal ideations, severe depression, anxiety and self-harm.”

A case management conference is set for July 10.

OPINIONS It’s everyone’s job to keep children safe April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month, reminding us that it’s not only teachers and doctors who need to be alert to children in trouble – it’s everyone’s job. Last year, more than 100 Illinois children reportedly died because of abuse and neglect.

Over the past few years, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services rescued hundreds of children from toxic living environments. Every effort is made to return them home, and many procedural steps are taken to try and ensure the children’s safety and welfare.

Court Appointed Special Advocates – or CASAs – help in that process. Volunteers interact with the children, their families and involved professionals to render details that

help judges rule in the victims’ best interests.

These kids suffer more than the shame and pain of a single slap or spanking. In fact, many CASA cases don’t involve physical attack, rather they involve emotional abuse and neglect. However, according to CASA Kane County volunteers Terry and Susan – whose last names are being withheld because of the sensitive nature of their work – the effects can be equally as devastating.

Married retirees, the couple has been advocating for children for five years.

“At first, I wasn’t interested,” Terry admitted, “until I went through their training.

The woman who worked with us was so conscientious and caring, I thought I’d be doing well to be part of such an organization.”

“When one of the boys dyed his hair red, we wrote about it because it made him less like a case study.”

“The judges always read what we’ve written,” Susan said, impressed with the influence their recommendations have on court decisions.

Regrettably, much physical abuse goes unnoticed, perhaps because in our country physical punishment is still legal (even bragged about), unlike in many other countries where it’s prohibited.

According to child behavior

expert, Dr. Paul C. Holinger, “Approximately 60 percent of adults still approve of physical punishment, despite compelling evidence that it does not work, [but instead] makes things worse.” Yes, folks, physical punishment, such as spanking, slapping and paddling, exacerbates – not extinguishes – unwanted behavior.

Holinger’s credentials and research validate his position.

He’s founder of the Center for Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, dean of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, and professor of psychiatry at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center. Oh, yeah, and he’s also my brother.

“Spanking is a euphemism for hitting,” contends the blog “Dr. Paul Holinger’s Place for Parents and Children.” America’s assault and battery laws

prohibit adults from hitting each other, so why should “one be permitted to hit a smaller and even more vulnerable child?”

For alternatives to physical punishment, Holinger offers two suggestions. First: “Use words to explain your feelings.

Use words to label your child’s feelings.” Second: “Set a good example. Act and talk as you would want your child to act and talk. Your child strives to be like you.”

Abused children often grow up to abuse their children. Violence begets violence. Instead, parents and caregivers, please forever speak – not hold – your peace.

Keystone XL’s absurd delay THE WASHINGTON POST Last Friday afternoon, the time when officials make announcements they hope no one will notice, the State Department declared that it is putting off a decision on Keystone XL indefinitely – or at least, it seems, well past November’s midterm elections.

This time, the excuse is litigation in Nebraska over the proposed route, because that might lead to a change in the project that various federal agencies will want to consider.

The State Department might even decide to substantially restart the environmental review process.

This is yet another laughable reason to delay a project that the federal government has been scrutinizing for more than five years.

At this point, there is little doubt about the big picture. After two thorough environmental analyses, State Department experts determined that

the pipeline’s impact probably would be minimal, even on climate change-inducing carbon dioxide emissions.

The economic rewards of extracting Canadian oil are too attractive and the options for getting it out of the country are too numerous.

We would rather see Canadian crude traveling a well-built, well-regulated pipeline in the United States than on the rail cars, barges and ocean tankers that will move it until cheaper options inevitably come online.

The administration’s latest decision is not responsible; it is embarrassing.

The United States continues to insult its Canadian allies by holding up what should have been a routine permitting decision amid a funhouse-mirror environmental debate that got way out of hand.

The president should end this national psychodrama now, bow to reason, approve the pipeline and go do something more productive for the climate.

Hughes said she also had several hobbies and collections, in addition to furniture, to sell.

“I’m moving to a condo, and I can’t bring it all with me,” Hughes said.

With five children and 15 grandchildren, Hughes said she has plenty of help getting things ready and running the sale.

Her biggest-ticket item is a wooden dining room set by Interior Crafts that she said was the same type purchased by President John F. Kennedy.

“It is very high-priced and hand-carved,” Hughes said.

“If someone gives me $5,000 for it, I’ll sell it. Otherwise, I’ll keep it in the family. After all, if it was good enough for President Kennedy.”

Judge cuts sentence in 2013 fatal crash

By LAWERENCE SYNETT lsynett@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The judge who reduced Benjamin Black’s sentence by three years Thursday said he erred by twice considering the 29-year-old caused serious physical harm when issuing the original sentence.

Kane County Judge James Hallock reduced Black’s sentence from 12 to nine years for driving with heroin in his system during the February 2013 crash that killed 11-yearold Matthew Ranken of Sycamore.

The revised sentence gives Black 353 days’ credit for time served, and includes two years’ probation upon his release.

He must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence, and could complete his sentence in less than seven years.

Black also faces felony theft charges in DeKalb County in an unrelated inci-

dent that occurred after the crash.

“The judge ruled correctly and admitted his error,” said D.J. Tegeler, Black’s attorney. “I truly believe he accidentally ruled on an improper factor. Mr. Black is pleased with today’s decision, but still has problems realizing the harm he has caused.”

The sentencing range Black faced for aggravated driving Benjamin under the influBlack ence – three to 14 years in prison – was based on the crash causing a death, so it should not have been considered a second time in sentencing, Black listed as factor No. 1 in the appeal.

“The court never likes to say ‘plain error,’ especially when they are speaking about themselves, but having an opportunity to review the case law, it was plain error

to rely on factor No. 1,” Hallock said. “The court at this time finds that the original sentence wrongfully placed some emphasis, maybe not as much as Mr. Tegeler believes, but some emphasis on that factor No. 1, including the death of the victim.”

Matthew’s mother, Tonda Ranken, was visibly upset and broke down as she left the courtroom. She declined to speak after the hearing.

Tegeler said Black still struggles with the crash he caused and its aftermath.

“He still has trouble forgiving himself for what has occurred,” he said.

Black pleaded guilty in November to two counts of aggravated driving under the influence in connection with the crash.

He was driving a Ford Expedition near the intersection of Route 64 and Peplow Road in Kane County when he crashed into the back of a Chevrolet Cavalier, in which

Matthew and Teale Noble were passengers. Noble, now 19, of Sycamore, was injured.

Samples of Black’s blood and urine taken after the crash tested positive for heroin metabolites and alprazolam, the generic name for Xanax, a prescription drug used to treat anxiety disorders, authorities said.

In the Dowding case cited during the appeal, it was found that the court improperly sentenced the defendant on aggravated DUI charges by considering the first aggravating factor of death or great bodily harm.

“It’s a case virtually one point with this one,” Tegeler said during the hearing.

“I’m asking this court, based upon the Dowding decision, to reconsider its decision of 12 years, striking the aggravating factor number one of causing death or great bodily harm, as that is apparent in the charge here, and reconsider and reduce my client’s

sentence.”

Hallock agreed.

“The death of the victim was actually built in to the nature of the charge for which the defendant pleaded guilty, and after having reviewed my notes, and reviewed the statute and having the opportunity to consider the Dowding [case], at this time we’ll resentence the defendant,” Hallock said.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Cullen suggested a sentence at the upper end of the range during the original sentencing.

He said Thursday that if Hallock sentenced Black to 12 years because a person died, that it is something the judge has to consider, and to reduce the sentence appropriately.

“You never know what to expect,” Cullen said of the reduced sentence. “The judge articulated his points, and I respect the difficult decision he had to make.”

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – About the only time Garrett Davis paused Thursday afternoon came after he had finished a two-hitter to help the Geneva baseball team avoid a sweep against St. Charles North.

Asked about the high end of his modest fastball’s velocity range, the junior left-hander guessed between 78 and 80 mph.

Davis used the pitch only when he had to in a 4-1 gem, relying on a curveball, changeup and slider that seldom ranged outside the strike zone. Davis kept his emotions in equal check, a big part of why he’s 3-0.

“You can’t take anything for granted out there, you know,” Davis said. “We play a lot of good teams in our conference, so you’ve just always got to have the mentality of they want to beat you, too, but they have to play you. It’s tough to beat. You have to have that mentality.”

Honing their concentration was pivotal as the Vikings (10-4, 6-3 Upstate Eight Conference River Division) rebounded from the first two games of the series. North (133, 7-2) triggered the run rule Tuesday and won comfortably again Wednesday.

With leadoff man Jason Croci (3 for 4) paving the way, the Vikings stayed comfortable at the plate Thursday, which allowed them to do the same defensively behind Davis, who spaced two strikeouts and two walks.

“We just wanted to go out there and play relaxed, because the last couple of games have been kind of rough for us,” Geneva catcher Nathan Montgomery said. “I mean, I think that it’s all working out pretty well with us and we just wanted to go out there and have fun and kind of get back the mojo that we had at the beginning of the year.”

Genke also hoped his own players would take a cue from the defensive highlight of the game: North left fielder Nick Drawant’s running catch against the wall in foul territory to end the sixth.

With the bases loaded and Geneva ahead, 3-1, Vikings third baseman Ben Chally – owner of the game’s lone extra-base hit with a third-inning double – lofted a fly ball that kept drifting foul.

Drawant sprinted and closed on the ball, banging into the wall near the foul pole as he collected it. He quickly rose to

his feet and showed the catch, to the delight of North’s fans and the dismay of Geneva’s.

A slight dent in the wall was there for all to see as Drawant headed back to the dugout.

“He goes hard on everything he does. I mean, you play checkers and he’s foaming at the mouth,” Genke said.

“He’s the kind of kid you love to have on your team.”

Geneva coach Matt Hahn lent similar praise to Davis, saying, “Every time he’s on the mound, we know we’ve got a real good chance to win.”

North’s Cory Wright opened the fourth with an opposite-field single to left.

Drawant had the team’s second hit later in the inning, one batter after Joe Kuczek drove

in the North Stars’ lone run with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Vikings mounted all the offense they needed against North starter Ryan Suyak with separate run-scoring singles from Croci and Montgomery in the second and third.

Max Novak and Alex Lobrillo added RBI singles in the sixth and seventh, fueling Davis’ confidence and trustyour-defense approach.

“Staying ahead in the count is very important so you can utilize all of your pitches as strikes,” Davis said.

It also helps keep sweeps at bay.

A few North players wielded brooms after the game, but they were only used for field maintenance.

But Batavia’s struggling offense responded. After the first, Regelbrugge held the Bulldogs to just four hits – all singles – before Schoessling’s game-winner.

“When you start the season and you think you’ve got something but you know by the end of the year you’re always changing things up,” Batavia coach Matt Holm said of his team’s recent offensive struggles. “We moved Jeremy up in the order trying to get a little bit more contact up at the top and it turned out to be successful.”

In the top of the seventh, Green again walked the leadoff hitter, prompting Holm to call on Laren Eustace to finish the game. The left-hander induced Mike Settle to ground into a 5-4-3 double-play. Eustace walked Olson before get-

ting Barry to line out to short to end the game.

Regelbrugge took the tough-luck loss for East, needing just 69 pitches to get through six innings. The junior allowed eight hits and struck out two without walking a batter. The East pitching staff allowed just five runs in the three games against Batavia.

“We just couldn’t push across a run today as Colby pitched another nice ballgame,” East coach Len Asquini said. “It was one of the those days where we hit the ball really hard but right at people. A couple of those balls you move it a few feet to the right or left and you got something going there.”

Schoessling’s two hits paced the Batavia offense to support Green, who allowed just two hits while striking out six.

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland baseball team relied on the bottom of the batting order Thursday to maintain its perfect record in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East.

Jacob Bachio and Lucas Wolski, the eighth and ninth batters, were 6 for 6 and knocked in four runs in the Knights’ 7-3 win over DeKalb.

Kaneland is now 5-0 in conference play.

“We’ve been harping to those guys about getting something going for the top of the order and they produced today,” Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said. “A couple of big RBIs down there in the order.

When you get production from the bottom of the order, that is how you win games.”

The duo put Kaneland (9-3 overall) in the lead in the bottom of the second after the Barbs picked up a run in their half of the inning. Noah Baert scored on a Jordan Keck single.

kins to tie the game at 1. Wolski, a left-handed hitter, doubled down the left field line, scoring Jake Bilotta, who was running for Thorson, and Bachio, putting Kaneland up, 3-1.

“Crosby is their ace pitcher and I knew he was going to throw a little faster,” Wolski said. “I was focused on hitting the opposite way.”

DeKalb tied the game in the fifth on two unearned runs. Dylan Farrell and Keck reached base on Kaneland errors. Farrell scored on a Logan Haring single and Keck scored on a Jake Kuykendall ground out.

The bottom of Kaneland’s order struck again in the sixth.

derly from second with the go-ahead run. Wolski followed with a single. Bachio scored on walk to Joe Panico when the ball got away from Haring.

Wolski and Panico scored on Joe Laudont’s triple to give Kaneland a 7-3 lead.

Laudont’s hit was the last batter Crosby faced. The senior, who took the loss, started the game fanning the first four batters. He finished the day yielding 10 hits, while striking out six and walking one.

“I think John did a great job,” DeKalb coach Jacob Howells said. “Sometimes when he ran into trouble. he had a hard time finishing the hitters. I thought Kaneland did a great job of never giving in during an at-bat.”

Nick Henne picked up the win in relief. He took over for Thorson with the bases load and two outs in the sixth.

Henne got out of the inning by inducing Patrick Aves, the first batter he faced, to ground out.

“They did a much better job of taking care of their opportunities. When they had chance to score, they cashed in every single time,” Howells said. “We probably had more chance to score runs. We weren’t able to get the big hit.” “[Thorson] did a great job for us,” Aversa said. “He kept the score low and issued only one walk today. He gave us a chance to make plays on defense. Sometimes we did and sometimes we didn’t.”

BATAVIA – In the early part of the season, offense was the last thing the Batavia baseball team would have pointed to as a potential trouble spot.

But entering the final game of a three-game series with St. Charles East, the Bulldogs had scored two runs over the first two games of the series.

It was the same song and dance for the first five innings Thursday, with a first-inning run being the only offense Batavia could muster off East lefthander Austin Regelbrugge.

After East scored the tying run in the sixth off Batavia starter Colby Green, plating another run seemed like a tall order considering the Bulldogs’ recent offensive struggles. But in the bottom half of the sixth, Jeremy Schoessling

came through with an RBI single up the middle that scored Steven Busby. Schoessling later scored on a wild pitch that made it 3-1, a score that held up as the Bulldogs salvaged a game out of the three-game set.

“Every at-bat you’re looking first-pitch fastball,” Schoessling said of his sixth-inning hit. “I was hoping for a fastball and got it.

We had a lot better energy today, you could tell. Last [two] games we’ve been kind of down and they had energy the whole game. Today, we had energy the whole game.”

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com AURORA – Win or lose, coach Kristy Kane realized Thursday would be a mistyeyed occasion as her Aurora Central Catholic girls soccer team squared off with her former employer.

The Chargers’ 2-1 win against Rosary was one for Kane to celebrate, but mixed emotions were inevitable.

“It’s hard at the end of the game,” Kane said. “Because I’m so happy we won, the girls deserve it so much and we worked so hard, but you then see these players you care so much about so upset on the other bench.

Usually, I’m not paying attention to what the other bench is doing after a win.”

Kane has helped engineer a major turnaround for the once-struggling Chargers program, with the victory against Rosary the latest piece of compelling evidence. ACC (7-1-1, 4-1 Suburban Christian Conference) rallied from a 1-0 hole ear-

ly in the second half to defeat a Rosary program that has dominated ACC over the years.

“She was very happy,” ACC goalkeeper Bry Mandarino said of Kane. “She got a little bit teared up at the end. She was very happy that we won it.”

Kane inherited a young but talented ACC team.

“I thought maybe it would take a while to build a program,” Kane said. “I just feel like I’m a pretty lucky coach.”

While the Chargers are heavy on underclassmen, junior Jordyn Sundberg lends experience and loads of skill.

Sundberg scored both goals in ACC’s comeback, a left-footed drive from just outside the box with 30:01 to play in the match to tie it, and an even longer score on a free kick with 23:59 remaining that Rosary goalkeeper Lauren Frasca tipped but could not corral.

“I knew with the wind that I had the natural curve so I really just kind of kicked that one,” Sundberg said of the free kick.

“But I kind of had a [target] that it was going to go in.”

Kane considers Sundberg a vastly underrated player and said she’s a tremendous role model for younger girls in ACC’s program.

“She can hit the goal in places that even college-level players, I feel like even girls on our national team, wish they could hit the ball sometimes the way that she can hit the ball,” Kane said. “She’s a dangerous player, and she’s just an all-around

great kid, great soccer player, team leader.

“She has a great shot with both feet but she has everything in my book that a great player has.”

Rosary (4-7, 3-1 SCC) scored first about five minutes into the second half on a goal by sophomore Caroline Maley, who capitalized on one of several deep throw-ins from Quincy Kellett.

Maley played on Rosary’s varsity team under Kane as a freshman last year.

“It was kind of fun, going against an old coach,” Maley said. “There’s kind of still a soft spot for her. We wish her the best.”

The Royals absorbed heavy graduation losses from last year and have also dealt with missing personnel at various points as they acclimate to new coach Brian Frank.

“We’re not going to quit,” Frank said. “We’re not going to roll over. The season’s not done yet.”

The Chargers won only three matches last year, with a

blowout loss to Rosary among their numerous setbacks. To complement Mandarino’s emergence, Kane shifted some formerly offensive-minded players to defense as she sought to build a blue-collar team that could win low-scoring matches like Thursday’s.

“With our defense, we’re just so strong back there,” Sundberg said. “Without them, we wouldn’t be able to get the ball up top so we can run up there and get the goals that we get. Our defense is just so strong this year compared to last year.”

Down two runs in the bottom of the sixth Thursday, the Knights had a prime opportunity – runners on first and third, one out – but Kaneland couldn’t muster the big hit, as Meg Cohrs lined out to second and Hayley Contorno struck out looking to end the rally.

Kowalski would set the Knights down 1-2-3 in the seventh as the Barbs escaped with a 3-1 win. The four-year starter for DeKalb (10-4, 1-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) finished with 11 strikeouts.

“Today, this was the best I’ve seen Katie throw in two years, to be honest,” DeKalb coach Jeff Davis said. “She had 11 strikeouts, only three hits. We were out there talking, I was like ‘That reminds me of Katie in ’11.’ She was striking out any-

After getting out of the sixth-inning jam, Kowalski got two of the Knights (7-8, 0-2 NI Big 12 East) in the seventh – Angie Morrow and Rachel Goress – to strike out. Goress struck out looking to end the game, one of four times a Kaneland hitter took a called third strike.

“It’s very disappointing.

One of the lone mistakes Kowalski made was when Kaneland’s Lanie Callaghan hit a pitch over the center field fence to lead off the fourth and give the Knights a 1-0 lead.

That inning where they scored, she missed two spots in a row where she wasn’t even supposed to throw a strike and she threw it right over the heart of the plate. It will hurt you.”

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE GENEVA – Trailing, 7-0, entering the bottom of the sixth, the Kane County Cougars rallied Thursday night past Beloit for a 10-8 victory at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

The Cougars (14-6) struck for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth. Left fielder Trey Martin and shortstop Danny Lockhart both delivered two-run doubles in the inning.

Jordan Hankins, Jacob Hannemann and Martin drove in two runs apiece for the Cougars, who took three of four games in the series.

Tyler Bremer was the winner, pitching three innings of one-run, six-strikeout relief.

Zack Godley pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

The Cougars open a three-game series against Wisconsin at 6:30 p.m. today.

MAPLE PARK – Kaneland girls soccer coach Scott Parillo devoted about 75 percent of Wednesday’s practice to corner kicks and free kicks.

On Thursday, the fruits of the Knights’ labor generated a 2-0 win against Sycamore, as Delaney Stryczek and Holly Collingbourne both converted Madi Jurcenko corners within a five-minute span in the second half.

“She’s been magical all year with those corner kicks.

That’s like 11 or 12 goals we’ve scored this year on those,” Parillo said. “She puts it in a very difficult spot for the goalie. … She just puts them right where we need them to be every time.”

Kaneland (9-1, 4-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) navigated an especially harrowing wind on its usually drafty home pitch. Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Chapman earned her seventh shutout.

“It wasn’t a pretty game because of the wind,” Parillo said, “but we were able to knock in some of our chances and Emily Chapman stopped all of their chances.”

NOTEWORTHY Cadets eye health, county meet Marmion looks to come unshackled from a few more injuries in the coming days, just in time for the May 9 boys Kane County meet at Streamwood’s Millennium Field.

“The big thing is we try to have a good representation at the county meet,” Cadets coach Dan Thorpe said. “That puts us running against all those 3A schools and gives us a great measuring stick.”

Marmion gains confidence from its usual suspects.

Tyler Maryanski, a returning state qualifier, already has cleared 6 feet, 6 inches in the high jump – three inches better than the 2A qualifying standard.

Fellow senior Kevin Grahovec, another state veteran in the 800 meters, continues to work back from an internal issue Thorpe said is either an intestinal bug or a pulled muscle. Junior middle distance and distance runner Brady Bobbitt also is building stamina after an injury.

In the meantime, Grahovec’s brother, Andrew, has provided needed depth.

Thorpe thinks the schedule may also offer a slight, builtin edge once the county meet rolls around. The Cadets compete in an invitational at Streamwood this weekend, giving them a first look at Millenium Field.

“Your high jumpers and your throwers, especially if they have a good day, they

come back for that county meet confident,” Thorpe said.

BC boys bow out at Peterson for now Burlington Central boys coach Mike Schmidt estimates the Rockets have competed in Kaneland’s Peterson Prep Invitational in 12 or 13 of his 19 seasons.

The ratio won’t grow this year, and not because BC is dancing around the traditionally tough field.

Athletes dancing, period, is the culprit. The school’s prom conflicts with Saturday’s meet.

“Hopefully, in two years we’ll be back in it when our prom gets moved again, but it’s a great meet,” Schmidt said.

Zick welcomes new running mate Reading or hearing that Kaneland girls sprinters enjoyed a big week usually triggers details about senior Lauren Zick’s latest triumphs.

While that rings true again this time, Knights freshman Nicole Sreenan gladly joined Zick’s company, too.

Sreenan won the 100 (12.86) and 400 (58.69) at Tuesday’s home dual against Yorkville, when Zick took individual titles in the long jump (17-7) and 200 (26.14).

Zick also helped Kaneland place third among five teams at its own Jenni’s ABC Meet on Saturday, winning the 100 (13.06) and long jump (16-2).

Ben Barnes was a double winner in the long jump (20 feet, 7½ inches) and triple jump (41-7¼), while Nate Dyer took titles in the shot put (56-3½) and discus (155-0). In addition, Dylan Kuipers cleared 14 feet to win the pole vault.

WHAT WE LEARNED LAST WEEK ...

Batavia’s girls relays are rolling. The Bulldogs inished second in Saturday’s Oswego East Invitational thanks in part to a few quality quartets. Batavia’s 4x400-meter group of Hailey Plata, Alicia Grant, Audrey Jonke and Taylor Stieve inished irst in 4:09.65. The 4x100 (49.98) and 4x800 (10:09.48) both were second.

WHAT WE’LL LEARN IN THE WEEK AHEAD ...

Which girls athletes and teams earn bragging rights at Friday’s Kane County meet at Kaneland. St. Charles East returns much of the core from last season’s runner-up, that challenged West Aurora to the end. Jordan Shead, Torree Scull and twins Allison and Elizabeth Chmelik are but a few Saints with strong experience. On the lip side, sophomores such as McKenzie Altmayer (Geneva) and Karina Liz (Aurora Central Catholic) are eager to build off promising 2013 debuts.

11. Week 6 at Falcons: Bears’ defense may be licking its chops to see what it can do against Mike Tice’s offensive line, Joe DeCamillis and the special teams have to keep Devin Hester out of the endzone. Hester would love to break the return record against his former team.

12. Week 17 at Vikings: Season finale, Bears could have a chance to make the postseason, Jared Allen’s return to Minnesota, outdoor game in late December at TCF Bank Stadium.

And, as Eric Edholm at Yahoo points out, there aren’t many strong matchups in the final week of the season – at least, the way they look in April.

13. Week 5 at Panthers: Three

five points or fewer, Ron Rivera against his former team and an interesting matchup for the Bears’ offense against a Carolina defense that finished second in points allowed last season.

14. Week 16 vs. Lions: Last year, the Lions came into Soldier Field in a crucial game and won by two points in a heartbreaker. One of four late-season divisional games that could help determine the playoff picture.

15. Week 7 vs. Dolphins: Brandon Marshall faces his former club, and he and Alshon Jeffery get the Brent Grimes-Cortland Finnegan combo at corner; Dolphins looking for revenge from 2010 shutout.

16. Week 11 vs. Vikings: [Shrugs]. Not much to say about this one, other than Allen’s first bout against his former club and the Bears get a chance to continue their dominance of the Vikings in Chicago.

What’s better than predicting the Bears’ record in April?

Ranking the games from 1 to 16 in terms of level of watchability, of course.

There are several marquee games on the schedule, with five games under the lights, a Thanksgiving Day game, a trip to Foxborough, Mass., and some fun reunion matchups, but a schedule wouldn’t be complete without a couple of games that folks might not be as excited to mark down in the calendar.

Here is my ranking of the Bears’ 2014 schedule from 1 to 16 of which games I’m most looking forward to seeing.

1. Week 2 at 49ers: First Sunday night game for the Bears, first game at brand-spankingnew Levi’s Stadium; Niners ‘D’ vs. Trestman’s offense, Harbaugh’s offense vs. Bears’ revamped ‘D’; ultimate litmus test for 2014 Bears.

2. Week 12 vs. Buccaneers: defense that befuddled them in offense will be a good matchup. of the last four games between Soldier Field, “Monday Night 10. Week 14 vs. Cowboys: The these two have been decided by

4. Week 10 at Packers: “Sunday Night Football” at Lambeau, first game in Green Bay since Shea KO’d Rodgers, final matchup of the season for the game’s best rivalry, serious NFC North implications.

5. Week 1 vs. Bills: Chris Williams and Corey Graham return to Soldier Field, what else do you need? I’m mostly kidding.

Season opener, improved Bills team with a vaunted defensive line, our first look at the new Bears, optimism will be high.

6. Week 15 vs. Saints: Bears get another chance at Rob Ryan’s

“Have your pencils and scorecards ready for today’s line-up.”

That was Pat Piper’s alert to the few hardcore Cubs fans gathered on a breezy afternoon for a not-so-promising game, yet a curiously satisfying experience, at the now celebrated Wrigley Field.

Those were the days of my early experience as a Cubs fan, approximately 70 years worth of the string of 100. As I recall the beginning as a circa 1945 first-grader on Grandpa Jim Arteberry’s porch on East Main Street, the Cubs were in the World Series and things were not looking too promising.

It was not clear how he got interested in the Cubs. He had come to St. Charles to follow a career of molding/manufacturing locomotive wheels for the railroad. He was born in the deep South yet – to me – always spoke as if he was a native of Kane County. I knew him as a worker for the city of St. Charles – a city engineer who had represented the city on the construction of the Municipal Building – and as an alderman – I loved to show my friends the “J. Arteberry” on the bronze plaque on the Main Street Bridge.

He and Carl Asplund were almost always in downtown parades in a convertible designated for Spanish-American War veterans.

That October he had already harvested his victory garden and Grandma Grace

JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry was probably out to a Woman’s Relief Corps meeting or at her desk reading “Table Chatter” by Lina Paschal, her favorite Chronicle columnist.

As we chatted about the Cubs, we could look to the west and view the railroad crossing and an actual train, freight or passengers. In the other direction, filling a city lot, was Lappy Hunt’s private tennis court and, across the street, the milk plant and the thriving manufacturers Roto-Color, U.S. Printing and Reasor’s and The Alps.

I suspect he actually preferred the local softball leagues, which played at night at the stone-seated diamond at Pottawatomie Park. We went to games all summer and then stopped at the Colonial ice cream plant for a pineapple sundae. But that season was over.

My dad was more openly committed to the Cubs for the same reasons we appear to adopt the church and the politics of our family. It was the Cubs for me.

Lots of trips to Wrigley in those days.

Drive in to the city all the way on North Avenue; park at the Sinclair Station on Addison; no line at the ticket office for box

seats.

Generally, we sat behind the homeplate screen. (A line drive foul on the baselines could be dangerous?)

The view was panoramic from there and usually provided a close-up view of batters such as Stan Musial, Ralph Kiner, Jackie Robinson or Pee Wee Reese, who seldom acknowledged us, preferring to focus on the Bob Rush fast ball or the infield shift, which Charlie Grimm had signaled from the dugout.

When I was at home from Shelby sixth grade my family tavern’s connection to the Meister Brau people brought about the gift of an autographed baseball.

All the guys – Hank Sauer, Andy Pafko and even Jack Brickhouse and Harry Creighton – covering every inch of that NL ball sealed my loyalty.

A buddy, Carol Heinz, and I would hurry home from school to catch the last few innings broadcast by Bert Wilson.

Orthodontist appointments in Oak Park were arranged in the morning to straighten teeth, and afternoons arranged to check out Wrigley. Perhaps a stop in Elmhurst for a Hamburger Heaven treat on the way home.

Many fine visits and a few special ones accumulated through the years, for example, the Willie Smith walk-off homer on Opening Day; the Lindy McDaniel’s no-hitter (missed the train back to Mad-

ison that Sunday); the first night game; and, now and then, a nice win.

Not sure when the glow went off on the family traditions.

Perhaps it was crossing the border and meeting Packer-backers, some Democrats, and the lifestyles of the ’60s.

We had never expected to have a winning team at St. Charles High School. We appreciated the assembly cheer session during which the battle cry had something to do with practicing hard.

SC would shine, as the song goes, but not necessarily win.

Sooner or later, looking around with a wider perspective, there were teams that had the capacity to win a lot!

Teams that did not simply glorify the experience or the homage to the stadium.

Maybe it had something to do with the high prices or having to search to find a broadcast on every channel from 9 to 800.

Happy hundred, Wrigley. I’m looking for an enterprise (not a building) that has a winning record, appreciates the loyalty of the constituents and has good disability access.

Subaru expands powerplant possibilities with hybrid Subaru added a hybrid model to the Crosstrek for 2014. It is an option to the 2-liter, gasoline-only powerplant, which is in two trim levels, the $21,995 base and $24,495 Limited.

The hybrid is $25,995 in its base format and $29,295 in Touring trim (sunroof, leather, 6.1-inch touch screen, navigation with voice controls, smartphone hookup, high definition and satellite radio).

In national advertising, Subaru touts the hybrid “as the most fuel-efficient, all-wheel-drive hybrid crossover in America.”

This is slightly deceptive advertising as hybrid sedans or crossovers, as a rule, are frontwheel-drive vehicles. Subaru is exclusively AWD on its vehicular products.

Crossovers are sedans with a raised suspension (8.7-inch ground clearance), maybe a tow hook or two and a rear liftgate that opens to a load floor, which can approximate 35 to 50 cubic feet of storage space or more when rear seats are folded flat.

The Crosstrek qualifies as a crossover on those counts.

A Crosstrek crossover that was tested recently averaged 29.7 miles per gallon of unleaded regular gasoline. This is honest and good fuel usage for a vehicle that weighs 3,451 pounds, constantly drives four wheels and, during the test week, carried two adults (350 combined pounds) who mercilessly drove the 2-liter engine hard on mostly interstates and county roads. The Environmental Protection Agency rates the Crosstrek’s combined city and highway fuel usage at 31 mpg.

The Crosstrek does well in city, crowded environments as the battery does most of the work at speeds of less than 25 miles per hour. The non-hybrid Crosstrek has a combined city and highway fuel usage of 28 mpg. There is a $1,500 premium to be paid for a hybrid Crosstrek. Shoppers might want to keep this in mind as the fuel usage is not all that great between hybrid and

The 2-liter, four-cylinder engine in the Crosstrek hybrid combines with an electric motor, which gives the vehicle an additional 13 horsepower for a total of 161. Otherwise, the Crosstrek is a 148-horsepower crossover.

Tested media acceleration with the hybrid is 0 to 60 mph in 9.9 seconds with one adult aboard.

That acceleration is similar to a Mitsubishi Outlander and MINI Cooper Countryman in basic engine dress, if that power comparison of crossovers means anything to anybody.

A continuously variable transmission is mated to the powerplant, which includes stop and start technology. This technology is great for stop and go city traffic and is accommodating in other situations as well.

Let’s say a wife tells her husband to stop at a grocery store to pick up a few extra groceries for lunch and dinner. He does just that and parks in the store lot but leaves the engine “running” and in park while his wife does the shopping. Except that the engine is not running. The battery pack has taken over and runs the accessories, such as the air conditioning, if it is 85 degrees outside, and the radio, which is tuned to a Chicago Cubs or White Sox baseball game. When the spouse returns with the groceries, the husband shifts into gear (reverse or forward) and the Crosstrek begins to move. No need to play with the ignition at all since the power has not been turned off.

The battery pack is stored underneath the rear floor, which reduces the cargo area from 22.3 to 20.6 cubic feet behind the upright split and fold rear seats.

When the seats are folded flat, the storage area expands to 50.2 cubic feet, which is more than

the 41.3 in the Countryman but less than the 63.3 in the Outlander. The Outlander, though, is a longer three-row, seven-passenger, not a two-row, five-passenger crossover. So, when its two rear seats are folded flat, more cargo area can be expected.

This is Subaru’s first goround with a full hybrid. The Crosstrek is based on the Impreza sedan, but its practical nature is based on the Legacy Outback.

One can call the Crosstrek a wagon with a raised suspension and not be far off the mark.

A hooded information window centered at the top of the dashboard includes a clock, outside and inside temperatures and the average fuel usage.

Standard amenities on the base hybrid model include power windows (express for driver up and down), door locks, and exterior mirrors. There are remote keyless entry and pushbutton start.

Redundant audio controls are mounted on the leather-wrapped

and tilt steering wheel. The six-speaker sound system includes AM-FM stereo radio, compact disc player, iPod integration, USB connection and an auxiliary audio input jack.

Niceties include intermittent wipers front and rear, dual lighted vanity mirrors on the visors, map lights, front and rear floor mats, cruise control, air conditioning, rear defogger, tachometer and compass. Safety features include front airbags, side airbags (for front seats) and overhead curtains for both seating rows. Standard safety fare also includes a four-wheel antilock braking system, stability control, daytime running lamps, child safety locks, child seat anchors/tethers, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Turn signal indicators are in normal positions front and rear, but they also blink in the heated side mirrors. Five headrests are adjustable and mechanically tuned for whiplash protection.

The suspension system on this 175.2-inch long crossover includes stabilizer bars, arms, shock absorbers and coil springs. The P225 17-inch radial tires are mounted on alloy wheels.

With the boxer engine (four pistons horizontally opposed to each other), Subaru claims its symmetrical AWD gets greater grip for each tire and, thus, better road response. With a mechanical center differential and limited slip differential, Subaru vehicles are built for traction in winter ice and snow.

The strut and wishbone suspension system includes stabilizer bars, shock absorbers and coil springs. There is some lean on sharp corners at relatively modest speeds.

The Crosstrek carries a three-year, 36,000-mile limited warranty with 24-hour roadside assistance and a five-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Crosstreks went on sale in the United States in 2012.

‘The Other Woman’ is too predictable and outrageous

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now Let’s pretend that I didn’t actually see this movie, that I only heard about it. And let’s say that what I heard is that it has some very funny parts, and that every actor plays his or her character for all it’s worth. Just that little bit of information would get me interested.

OK, I did indeed see it, and those factors are true. Too bad that I didn’t also hear about the story’s unrelenting implausibility, the unnecessarily long running time, and the preponderance of … oh, my, what’s the best way to put this … poop jokes.

“The Other Woman” which, for reasons that will be explained shortly, should be called “The Other Women,” is a far-too-calculated, fairly surprise-free, supposedly outrageous comedy that throws together characters who in real life would never give each other the time of day. The film asks us to go on their journey of bliss turned to deception turned to revenge, but its makers don’t seem very concerned that none of it makes any sense.

Kate (Leslie Mann) and Mark (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau – “Game of Thrones” fans know him as the King Slayer), have a happy, well-off New York life. But Mark, who makes scads of dough by investing in fake startup companies, is also having a happy and wild fling with high-powered lawyer Carly (Cameron Diaz). Kate has no clue of the affair. Carly doesn’t know that he’s married. Kate is sweet and ditzy and clueless to the ways of the world. Carly is tough and sharp and, for once, content with dating just one guy.

Mark is a total cad. He’s also sloppy. I mean, why would his mistress know his home address, where she can just pop up one day in the skimpiest of outfits, and have the door answered by his wife?

Cut to the premise: Both women find out they’ve been lied to. Both decide, after an extended, overplayed scenario in which they morph from rivals to friends, to get even with the guy. Both discover that – and here’s why the title is inaccu-

The funny moments are almost exclusively due to Leslie Mann’s gift for being able to spew out bursts of wildly up and down emotional dialogue along with a dose of physical comedy – and Diaz shows that she knows how to take a convincing pratfall or two, as does Coster-Waldau.

But there’s so much that doesn’t work, starting with the script having the feeling that it’s being stretched out, that entire scenes and characters could be eliminated without affecting the story.

We really don’t need another movie with diarrhea jokes. Any yucks that come from the presence of a great Dane that just keeps getting in the way are marginal at best. Carly has an assistant in her office (Nicki Minaj) who dresses to kill but is only around to make wisecracks that are disguised as good advice, but only drag things down. And there’s Don Johnson, playing Carly’s rich and randy dad, whose purpose in the film doesn’t go beyond being there so audience members

who are old enough will point at the screen and say: “Look! Don Johnson!”

Not distracting enough? The pop songs on the soundtrack should do the trick. When our heroines start spying on Mark and his activities, we get the theme from “Mission: Impossible.” When the trio gets into juvenile revenge mode, they do so to “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” When the action sweeps out into the streets of Manhattan, Sinatra is belting out “New York, New York.” Really, how blatantly obvious can you get?

In the end, there’s comeuppance, in the exact form that anyone who’s seen any film even somewhat similar to this one will be expecting … OK, with a little additional slapstick. But despite all of the movie’s errant ways, credit’s got to go to whoever came up with the nonsensical but funny line of dialogue uttered by one of the characters: “When I get this feeling I’m usually always right.”

Mild scoliosis usually requires little treatment Dear Doctor K: My granddaughter has scoliosis. What is the best treatment option for this condition?

Dear Reader: For readers who may not be familiar with the condition, I’ll start by explaining what scoliosis is. Normally, when you look at a person’s spine, it appears straight. With scoliosis, the spine typically curves out to one side and then back again. Or it may have two bowed-out areas, resembling an S shape. (I’ve put an illustration of a normal spine and a spine curved by scoliosis on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

What causes scoliosis? Certain neurological conditions, such as cerebral palsy, can cause the muscles of the back to pull unevenly on the bones of the spine. Birth defects in the bones of the spine can cause it.

Other genetic conditions that affect the ligaments and soft tissues of the spine also can cause it. In most cases, there is no such clear cause.

How common is scoliosis? Including its mildest forms, about three out of every 100 children are affected. However, in only about three out of every 1,000 children is it severe enough to require treatment.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Scoliosis is a long-term condition that can worsen over time. Most cases begin well after birth, usually in adolescence (although the condition can begin at younger ages). Affected children typically are born with a straight spine, but very slowly the spine starts to curve.

The abnormal position of the spine can affect the development of associated muscles and ligaments, causing the ribs and pelvis to twist and rotate to the side. As a result, a person with scoliosis may have uneven shoulders, a pelvis that thrusts forward on one side, or one leg that appears shorter than the other.

Treatment depends on several factors. These include the child’s age and gender, how severely the spine is curved and where the curve is located.

Treatment in girls also depends on whether they have started to menstruate. That’s because scoliosis usually doesn’t worsen once rapid bone growth ends after puberty.

Most cases of scoliosis are mild and require no treatment.

Even if this is the case for your granddaughter, her doctor should examine her regularly to make sure that the curve is not getting worse. Her doctor may also advise her to avoid heavy contact sports or gymnastics.

More severe cases that cause discomfort or other symptoms often require treatment. So do mild cases that are likely to get worse.

Treatment may include back-strengthening exercises.

For the worst cases, a doctor may recommend a special back brace or even surgery. Braces and surgery can stop the condition from worsening, and they can often help straighten the spine, though not completely.

Severe and untreated scoliosis can cause back pain, permanent deformities, and breathing or heart problems. Fortunately, this is rare, and treatments available today typically stop the condition from becoming severe.

Dr. Wallace: I went steady with the “perfect guy” for a year and a half. He treated me with respect, was polite, sweet, caring and had a great sense of humor. We did talk about possible sex when we were ready to accept the responsibility, but he never pressured me.

Then things became different and we started declaring our love and talking about sex as a way to express our love. We only had sex two times, and after that first time it seemed like he changed, and then the second time was nearly two months later, and I sort of encouraged it. Sometimes, of course, you rely on partner’s giving you accurate information, without which you will not do right. In this deal, how should the defenders card to defeat two spades after West leads the diamond ace?

North was tempted to pass out one no-trump. but knew that the percentage action was to retreat into spades; here, via a transfer bid. (One no-trump can be defeated by two tricks.)

West was tempted to double two spades for takeout, but that would have been dangerous because North could have had a strong hand, and here would have turned a potential plus into a definite minus.

At first glance, South has only five losers: one spade, two hearts and two diamonds. He can get to dummy with a diamond ruff and the club king to take two spade finesses. But ...

Under West’s diamond ace, East should drop his queen, showing the jack as well. Then West ought to shift to the heart king, under which East plays his six, starting a high-low with a doubleton.

South ducks, but now West leads a low diamond to get his partner on play. And East returns his second heart.

Declarer wins with his ace, ruffs his last diamond in the dummy and takes a spade finesse. But West wins the trick, cashes the heart queen, and leads another heart. East overruffs the dummy to defeat the contract.

DISTRIBUTION CENTER ASSISTANT Part-Time ACI Midwest – St Charles & Crystal Lake ACI Midwest is seeking a part-time Distribution Center Assistant to assist in all areas of product distribution within our St. Charles & Crystal Lake operations. Responsibilities of this position include: checking in and verifying newspaper deliveries, assist with delivering open/down routes in geographic area, coordinating delivery to residential and retail locations, overseeing product distribution to delivery contractors and assisting customer service with subscriber delivery request/follow up verification calls.

The successful candidate will have a high school diploma, valid driver's license, a reliable vehicle, proof of insurance and will be familiar with the Kane county area. Must possess a positive attitude, have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and be able to work overnight hours, including weekends and holidays.

Position will offer 25 hours per week.
