I visited a classroom at Wasco Elementary School in Campton Hills recently and was completely inspired.

Former educator Janet Hornbostel has taught Aaron Clark’s class of fifth-graders how to knit. The students were

knitting hats to be donated to local charities.

The two dozen students in the class were really into it, too. They all clamored for their skeins of yarn and needles as soon as their teacher gave the OK after their work was done.

Boys and girls were chatting away at their desks with their hands looping the yarn around the needles as if they’d been doing it their whole lives.

It seems so simple. Teach kids to knit, and it could be a great equalizer. There’s no

competition, no stronger or weaker links, just kids focusing on something for the better.

Now I just need to learn how to knit.

St. Charles gets Class 1 rating for fire protection KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The city of St. Charles on Monday received a ranking that could translate into lower fire insurance rates for St. Charles residents and businesses, according to a news release.

The city was awarded a Class 1 rating for fire protection from the Insurance Services Office, designating St. Charles as one of only 99 cities out of 45,000 surveyed in the country to earn the elite Class 1 status, the release states.

An award presentation was made Monday at the St. Charles City Council meeting by representatives from the Insurance Services Office. The office’s Public Protection Classification ratings are utilized to help establish appropriate fire insurance premiums for residential, commercial and industrial properties, according to a news release.

The program provides an objective countrywide standard that helps fire departments plan and budget for facilities, equipment and training. The office’s evaluation program includes 10 classifications, with 1 being the highest and 10 being the lowest, the release states.

The city of St. Charles scored 93.81 points out of 105.5 possible points during an audit by the

office in January. The rating is based upon a comprehensive review, with 50 percent of the rating from the fire department’s capabilities and efforts, the water supply system accounting for 40 percent and the remaining 10 percent coming from the emergency communications system.

Commercial and residential property owners in St. Charles will have access to some of the lowest insurance rates for fireloss insurance because of its highly rated fire protection, St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet wrote in the release.

“Our achievement of the Class 1 rating demonstrates the professionalism of all fire department members and their commitment to provide the highest levels of service to our community,” Schelstreet wrote.

“I am very appreciative of the dedication and expertise of the members of the Public Works Department water division, TriCom Central Dispatch and the neighboring fire departments whom we have partnered with for automatic aid and without whom this achievement would not have been possible.”

The St. Charles Fire Department also is one of only 23 fire departments in the country to hold both the ISO Class 1 rating and International Accreditation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence.

World record attempt for largest scooter parade set

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Saturday’s weather forecast might not be the most ideal for an attempt to set a world record for the largest kick scooter parade – the National Weather Service is calling for a 60 percent chance of rain and a high temperature of 48 degrees.

But Batavia resident Randy Simonian, who is organizing the event, said it will take place rain or shine.

“We are full steam ahead,” Simonian said Thursday. “The only thing that would stop us is severe weather.”

The event is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Peg Bond Center on the Batavia Riverwalk, near Houston Street and North Island Avenue in downtown Batavia.

It will start and end in downtown Batavia, Simonian said.

“Each scooter has to travel two miles to break the world record,” he said.

Simonian wants to break a record set in 2013 in New Zealand, when 489 participants set a Guinness World Record for largest kick scooter parade. He hopes to get 1,000 people involved in the event.

The event also will benefit the Batavia United Way, which raises funds for programs that directly benefit Batavians, along with CHIP IN Batavia, which supports students in temporary or transitioning housing situations or who are facing the obstacles of poverty in Batavia. Those interested

COVER STORY SEEKING PROTECTION FROM THE DOG FLU Flu can be spread by coughing, sneezing

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Jo Gengler of North Aurora brought her two dogs to Fox Valley Veterinary Clinic in North Aurora on Thursday after suspecting they have the canine flu.

“They have been coughing and sneezing,” Gengler told Fox Valley Veterinary Clinic owner Thomas Brooks.

Veterinarians across the area are dealing with an outbreak of a potentially fatal respiratory disease because of the canine influenza virus. Although his clinic has not yet seen a confirmed case, those who work there have seen several suspected cases, Brooks said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, canine influenza – also known as the dog flu – is a contagious respiratory disease in dogs caused by specific Type A influenza viruses known to infect dogs.

There are two different influenza A dog flu viruses – H3N8 virus and H3N2 virus.

The H3N2 virus is responsible for the current outbreak of dog flu being reported in the Chicago area, according to Cornell University, home to the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory.

There is an approved vaccine to protect dogs against the H3N8 virus, but it is unknown at this time wheth-

er the vaccine will protect against the H3N2 canine flu virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The flu can be spread to other dogs through coughing and sneezing Both influenza strains can cause high fever, loss of appetite, coughing, nasal discharge and lethargy.

Symptoms could be more severe in cases caused by the H3N2 virus, Cornell University officials state. Some infected dogs might not show symptoms at all.

H3N2 also has caused infection and respiratory illness in cats, officials stated.

Brooks said his clinic has been trying to keep up with the latest information about the flu outbreak.

“We are trying to gather information and gain better understanding,” he said.

Sugar Grove Animal Hospital veterinarian Karla Jebens said she also hasn’t seen any confirmed cases, but there were four cases the hospital suspected were the dog flu. As a preventative measure, she is recommending dog owners keep their pets from socializing with other dogs.

“Don’t go to dog parks,” Jebens said. “Try not to go to kennels. I know people have vacations, so that might be unavoidable.”

“Unless they have to be boarded, I would say no,” Jebens said. “The vaccine is not 100 percent effective, even with the original virus strain. It may lessen the severity of symptoms, and it may lessen the shedding time of the virus, but it is not going to keep them from getting it.”

The dog flu is affecting dog boarding businesses, as well as dog parks. Jenn Brauner, manager of Ruffner’s Luxury Pet Boarding in St. Charles, said the business has been boosting its cleaning procedures, doing even more than it already had been doing.

The district also warned patrons through social media, she said.

“She specifically said Breen was the only park that her dog had visited,” Rudow said. “We tried to let the users know in every way possible. I applaud them for reaching out and letting us know, and then the responsible thing was to let those pet owners know.”

Sugar Grove Park District financial manager and registrar Suzanne Serrurier said she continues to see dogs playing in the district’s dog park.

“They seem to be from the same household,” she said.

“I have heard from owners that they are staying away until the dog influenza passes.”

BATAVIA – Fire officials said an improperly discarded cigarette butt started a fire that caused an estimated $200 in damage to Crosstown Pub in Batavia on Wednesday night.

Batavia firefighters at 9:01 p.m. responded to Crosstown Pub, at 1890 Mill St., for an automatic fire alarm. Upon arrival at the restaurant, firefighters found a small fire had started in the mulch near the building and had spread to a small area on the outside of the building itself.

A cigarette butt had been thrown in the mulch, which started the fire, Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker said Thursday. No one was injured in the fire.

One room in the building was filled with smoke, which had activated the building’s fire alarm system, according to a release from the Batavia Fire Department. Employees had been notified of the fire and were dumping water on

Many people consider their four-legged friends to be more than just pets. The Batavia Park District understands that, and in fact, a large number of district staff have their own pets they consider to be part of their families.

The district is giving people a wonderful opportunity to commemorate the life of a beloved pet through the creation of a new Pet Memorial Program.

The district will kick off the new program in a fun and unique way at the Walk & Wag 3K-9 on May 9. The event will feature an unveiling of a bulldog statue at 10 a.m. at the Bark Park at West Main Community Park, 40W101 W. Main St., followed by a 1.8-mile fun walk throughout the park. A variety of vendors will be on site during the event, distributing freebies and samples, as well.

On-site registration will begin at 9 a.m. The cost is $5 for those 13 years or older and $5 for each dog. The first 50 individuals or families to register will receive a complimentary “Wag Bag” stuffed full of fun giveaways. Each dog registered also will receive a gift courtesy of the Batavia Park District.

Batavia-based Aldi seeks police help with bad checks

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A Batavia-based grocery store company sought police assistance last week with a case involving more than $1,000 in bounced checks, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

Police reported that Aldi,

at 1200 N. Kirk Road, wants to collect some or all restitution from a woman who used nine checks linked to an account with insufficient funds to pay for merchandise in a five-month span beginning in October.

A representative with the company called her – her phone number was on the checks – but she refused to

talk, according to the report.

The report noted that’s why the company sought law enforcement intervention.

The woman, whose information was redacted, used the checks at various Aldi stores in Kane County, according to the report.

She reportedly made purchases at the Geneva store at 975 E. State St., Oct. 4 and Nov.

14 for $284.79 and $128.32, respectively.

The St. Charles store, at 2670 W. Main St. received bad checks Jan. 15, and 16 and Feb. 11, police reported. The report indicated the purchases totaled $606.99. Four checks totaling $417.11 reportedly were used at the Batavia store at 451 N. Randall Road in January and February.

‘Spring into Action’ lunch held

On three separate occasions, Aldi checked on the availability of funds and was informed funds weren’t available, police reported.

The company reportedly learned on April 14 that the account had been closed. In addition to seeking restitution, Aldi wants to have the woman banned from its stores, according to the report.

Harper’s attorney, Lisa Accardi, asked Kane County Judge John Noverini for more time to respond. Noverini set a May 21 date for both sides to schedule a hearing on the filings, and to set a new date for trial.

According to court records, Harper’s wife had an emergency order of protection in place Feb. 18, 2014, but Harper was successful in asking a judge to cancel it on March 19, 2014.

Harper’s wife “and her children were the aggressors and severely injured [Harper] during the Feb. 18 incident,” according to Harper’s court filing.

His wife “bruised herself in order to secure an order of protection (if, indeed, [she] was bruised at all), and ... is using the Domestic Violence Act to advance her own agenda of having [Harper] removed from the marital residence and to gain an advantage over him in connection with the divorce,” according to the filing.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The prosecutor in a domestic battery trial wants to issue subpoenas to Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon and Assistant State’s Attorney Laura Maglio, so they can testify about their conversations with the accused.

In court papers filed this week, Assistant State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser wrote Dennis Harper that after the incident took place Feb. 16, 2014, defendant Dennis Harper called McMahon and had a conversation with him about the events of that night.

Harper then came to the State’s Attorney’s Office and talked with Maglio, also about the events of that night, according to the filing. Mosser was brought into the conversation, according to court papers.

Because she is the lead prosecutor, Mosser cannot testify, leaving McMahon and Maglio as the only other available witnesses, according to her court filing.

Issuing subpoenas to state’s attorneys and prosecutors is called a special witness doctrine, which requires a hearing before a court will allow it, according to the court filing.

Harper, 55, of Sugar Grove, is a retired Batavia police officer who served as campaign manager for Kane County Sheriff Donald Kramer’s successful election last fall.

“The testimony of these witnesses may be needed to impeach the defendant, should he choose to testify, as he made statements about what occurred that evening to them,” according to Mosser’s filing. “A statement made by a defendant is an exception to hearsay.”

1st step to becoming a lawn aficionado Spring is finally here. I know because I listen to a six-hour lecture at a local hardware store that differentiates fourstep lawn fertilizer plans. I choose the cheap generic brand because its bags’ bright colors can’t be mistaken, come August, for garbage or birdseed.

The FHM (Friendly Hardware Man) helps pile each bag into the trunk according to application dates. At home, I grab the family size indelible marker, blow off leftover flour from the last pie crust my wife rolled out, and write in football jersey-tall numbers, “1 ... 2 ... 3 ... 4” on the respective bags. The manufacturers must love their late April Fool’s joke when the buyer considers, “Hmm, did the guy say the red bag gets spread first, or the yellow?”

Oh, happy day! I roll it onto the lawn, flat and brown as sandpaper. I drop the blade to level 1, but nothing spits out. I lower it to minus seven. When stuff starts getting cut, I merrily work my way around the lawn, coughing on a thick brown Pigpen cloud of dirt, leaves, and atomized twigs.

Afterward, my lawn mirrors the heritage of Ozymandias, a “colossal wreck, boundless and bare,” but it’s ready for Step No. 1. After half an hour, I spot the community spreader hanging in the northeast corner of the garage, barricaded behind the stuff I took off the mower.

I study the problem like a cattle driver stopped by a raging springtime river, then get to work. An hour later, bruised and bleeding, I’m weaving Step No. 1 back and forth across my plowed terrain.

Finished, I leave the spreader in my neighbor’s driveway, a taunt that I beat him to the greenest lawn ever. He’ll see its promise come to fruition soon enough – come October.

These advances in technology are a near certainty.

The question is whether humanity will rise to the occasion and use them in a beneficial way. We can either build a Star Trek future, in which our civilization rises to new heights, or descend into a Mad Max world. It is up to us.

Bullpen, defense key for Vikings in win Team earns second straight win over Saints

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Geneva picked up its biggest win of the season Wednesday against St. Charles East to set up the rubber match yesterday.

The Vikings capitalized on eight East errors Thursday to jump out to an early lead and beat the Saints, 5-2, and take two of three games of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division series.

Geneva (8-6, 5-4 UEC River) scored three first-inning runs on hits from Matt Simpson and Garrett Davis and an RBI ground out by A.J. Hostman.

The big story, other than the defensive miscues by East, was the outstanding bullpen and defense played by the Vikings.

The Vikings used five pitchers, one in each of the last four innings. Brian Callaly picked up the win, with Nick Porretto closing with a save for the second straight game.

“That wasn’t originally the game plan,” Geneva coach Matt Hahn said. “When Brian didn’t have his best stuff, we said why don’t we go one per inning in the final four.

It worked out today and all of our pitchers had some great defense behind them.”

Geneva turned a double play in each of the last three innings, with the game ending on one started by Hostman at third.

“It was huge,” Davis said.

“When our pitchers are having trouble throwing strikes or hitting spots, we need to

make sure they know we are behind him. Double plays are huge rally killers and it was awesome to get one in each of the last three.”

Simpson’s RBI double in the first inning started the

scoring for the Vikings.

“We came out on fire today,” Simpson said. “We knew that they were going to want revenge after we beat them yesterday and I think getting off to a fast start really helped

our confidence even more.

Winning this series shows us that we can compete against anyone.”

East (12-4, 7-2) was hampered by the defensive miscues from the first batter. As many errors as they committed Thursday, the Saints still gave themselves opportunities late in the game, but the double plays shot down any chance of a come back.

Coach Len Asquini was frustrated to see his team unable to come through with a hit in a key spot for the second straight game against Geneva.

But as much as the errors hurt his team, he applauded the fact it remained in the game.

“To commit that many errors and still have a chance at the end says a lot,” Asquini said. “We have been in similar spots this year and came through. The last two days we just haven’t gotten it when we’ve needed.”

As Hahn said after Wednesday’s win, he has preached to his team to refrain from looking at its record. But as to winning the series over East, Hahn was not surprised in the slightest.

“This is how we have been playing all season,” he said.

“We have had a bounce or two not go our way, but I’ll continue to say that I like the way this team is playing. If we want to win come playoff time, these are the games to learn what it takes.”

Jack Wassel had two hits and scored twice for Geneva, reaching base all four times he came to bat in Thursday’s game.

Austin Regelbrugge took the loss for East, allowing four runs, only two of which were earned.

Schedule gives Cougars familiar April foe

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – From April 15 through Thursday, a Peoria Charter bus transported the Clinton (Iowa) LumberKings to and from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark six times.

This is neither the beginning of a math word problem nor a suggestion that Clinton repaint its team vessel with the name of the Midwest League’s other Illinois city. It’s simply a scheduling quirk that left the LumberKings grinning ahead of their next stop to see Geneva – and the Cougars – on July 2 and 3.

“Yeah, when we got back, I was like, ‘We’re back like we never left,’ ” LumberKings center fielder Chantz Mack said. “I think we play them again next week, right?”

Not quite, but the LumberKings are scheduled to visit Beloit (Wisconsin) for three games be-

ginning today, a series that will vault the Snappers past the Cougars as Clinton’s most common opponent in the first two-plus weeks of the MWL season.

Clinton’s only six home games through Thursday came against Beloit, proving minor league clubs don’t have to watch the Zooperstars or Myron Noodleman to see something peculiar.

“It’s kind of quirky, but if you win ’em, it’s good. If you lose ’em, it’s bad,” LumberKings manager Scott Steinmann said.

Poll Clinton’s clubhouse, and there’s an extra condition to Steinmann’s statement. If you play ‘em in Geneva after staying at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, you don’t shrug your shoulders.

“Yeah, I like coming to Kane County,” LumberKings third baseman Joe DeCarlo said.

here, so it plays for a competitive series, and there’s a pretty strong fan base, which always makes it fun, as well.”

The Cougars sandwiched a three-game trip to the Quad Cities between their separate three-game home series against Clinton.

This marks the lone time in 2015 the Cougars will face the same team on consecutive homestands.

As with the LumberKings, the Cougars ultimately felt neutral about any potential Clinton humdrum, at least from a baseball perspective.

“It’s obviously nice, especially when you get to see them twice almost in the same week, two series in the same week,” Kane County third baseman Cody Regis said. “You remember the pitchers, you remember the hitters and it’s just fresh in your mind, the last series. So definitely, you get an advantage out of that. But at the same time, they’re getting the same advantage, too.”

Even in the loss, Hanrahan and Maren managed to battle back from deficits to force both tiebreaks.

“This is a team that has a lot of fight in it, and I’m proud of our guys and how we come out and compete,” Batavia coach Brad Nelson said. “When you play a team as evenly matched with us in doubles as Geneva is, you’re going to have some longer matches and that should bode well for us down the road.”

In the No. 4 doubles match, seniors Gunnar Malm and Kevin Fiddelke gave Batavia its fifth and final win, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. “[Malm and Fiddelke] is a team that continues to get better every time out. They’ve played a number of close matches, too, and today was a nice win for them,” Nelson said.

GENEVA – As Batavia’s No. 1 singles player, Adam Maris knows that on any given day if he can race out to a quick, straight-set victory, he’ll have an opportunity to set the tone for the Batavia boys tennis team.

On Thursday in Geneva, Maris did exactly that.

The senior jumped all over his opponent, winning, 6-0, 6-0, to put the Bulldogs on the board first as they went on to defeat Geneva, 5-2.

Maris used a variety of shots to play through a noticeable crosswind and control the tempo.

“If you’re in control, everything is easier,” Maris said. “It can look different at times, like today I was able to move my opponent around and other times I’m waiting for him to move me around and then when I have my chance, I try to hit a good shot.”

Batavia (7-3, 2-0 Upstate Eight Conference River) continued to carry the momentum through singles play, as Josh Boyle won, 6-0, 6-1, in his as No. 2 singles match. Will McClure also won his No. 3 singles match, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles play, the Bulldogs clinched a team victory early on with a 6-1, 6-4 win from the No. 2 doubles pairing of Andrew Nelson and Nick Robinson. However, as a whole, Geneva was more competitive against the three-time defending UEC River champions in doubles play.

“It’s always nice to get a couple off Batavia here and there, especially pointswise when it comes to conference standings,” Geneva head coach Zach Evans said. “Our doubles all across the board are really strong and they’re getting better.”

Geneva fell to 1-1 in River Division play, but was able to notch exciting victories in the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles pairings.

By KEVIN BEESE editorial@kcchronicle.com WEST CHICAGO – The Geneva softball team pounded out 20 hits en route to a 17-1 thumping of West Chicago in six innings Thursday afternoon.

Five Vikings – Anna Geary, Annika Radabaugh, Rylie Porretto, Molly Wrenn and Kyla Chenier – each had three hits in the contest.

Geary got the Vikings (10-4, 7-2 UEC River) on the board early, hitting a leadoff home run to left-center. It was the second game in a row that Geary has led off with a home run for Geneva.

“I was just looking to get us going on offense early,” Geary said of her first-inning four-bagger.

Geary also added an infield single, a stolen base and a base hit to left in the winning effort.

“We are doing great as a team right now,” Geary said.

“We are winning as a team.”

It was definitely a team effort in the sixth inning as the Vikings pushed eight runs across the plate after there were two outs. At one point, Geneva had seven straight hitters reach base.

A two-run single by Porretto and a two-run double by Wrenn were the big blows in the inning.

“We did every part of the game well,” Geneva coach Greg Dierks said. “We pitched well, we hit and we played defense.”

The Vikings have been on a roll this week, clicking at the right time with the conference

title on the line next week with battles against St. Charles East and North. Thursday’s win keeps the Vikings even with East and North in the loss column – with two losses each. The Vikings have one fewer conference win, with seven.

“It was the third day in a row we got to a lead and had a strong showing, not getting touched,” Dierks said. “We had three days last week where that wasn’t the case.”

Emily Plocinski pitched six strong innings for the Vikings.

She allowed just four hits and walked three in the contest.

The only run she gave up was in the bottom of the second when she walked the Wildcats’ Hannah Gehlhaar leading off the inning.

“We are hitting well and playing defense,” Plocinski said. “That helps take pressure off the pitchers.”

Kaneland baseball completes series sweep over DeKalb KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE DEKALB – Kaneland baseball coach Brian Aversa expected DeKalb to come out strong after his team won by double digits in each of the first two games of the series.

Not only was Aversa expecting it, he also hoped they did.

The Knights were ready for DeKalb once again, using a sixrun third inning to lead them to a 9-7 victory and a North Illinois Big 12 Conference East sweep.

“It was better to have a victory like this today,” Aversa said.

“We needed a bit of a reality check after winning big in the first two games. They made it a battle, and it was good for us to win a game in this fashion.”

With the nine runs Thursday, Kaneland (9-7, 5-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) totaled 34 runs in the three games against the Barbs.

Aversa was pleased with the win, but knows even when his team gets up early, like Thursday, teams in that conference will not go away.

“I think we’re in one of the best conferences in the state,” he added. “We got up today and kind of let them back in with some mental mistakes, but games like today keep our focus.”

Marmion students win national competition KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com A video-production team at Marmion Academy in Aurora has been named the $2,500 national video-award winner in the 2014-15 First Freedom Student Competition for their seven-minute video “Beyond the Pew: Catholicism in America.”

The winning production-team members included Harrison Kearby of Aurora, Valen Piotrowski of Aurora and Christian Surtz of Batavia – all juniors at Marmion. The students created “Beyond the Pew: Catholicism in America,” a short documentary, to analyze the history and prosperity of Catholics in the U.S. “We thoroughly enjoyed our experience producing the documentary, and are excited that it won the First Freedom competition,” Surtz said in the release.

“We hope that it provides valuable information and insight to viewers, and we are very grateful to the First Freedom center for providing us this great opportunity to learn and share our faith to a new extent.”

Featuring several interviews, quotes and statistics, “Beyond the Pew” investigates, from a Catholic perspective, and offers insight into issues of religious freedom in the U.S.

“The project was far more work than I initially expected, but it helped me discover the history of my faith,” Kearby said in the release. “The project was an eye-opening experience, and we were fortunate to interview such a variety of people.”

The First Freedom Student Competition offers high school students the opportunity to compete for monetary awards as they examine the history and current-day relevance of religious freedom, and then, by written essay or video production, present their evaluation.

This school year, students selected a religion from their local community, state or region that was or is a minority religion, researched and analyzed its history as it encounters issues of religious freedom and equality, and then presented their evaluation of how this group’s local history compares to the broader narrative of U.S. history and First Amendment law.

This year’s student participants included 973 high school students from public, private, parochial schools and home-schooling regions nationwide, including American students living abroad.

Collaborating with other local Kiwanis clubs, members were able to pack 16,092 pound of food for the Northern Illinois Food Bank, feeding an estimated 64,368 people, according to a news release.

Jason Khuen recently was welcomed by the St. Charles Park District as the new aquatics and youth programs supervisor, responsible for Otter Cove Aquatic Park operations and contracted youth recreation programs. Previously, Khuen was employed as an aquatics supervisor at the Lemont Park District and worked as a part-time manager for both Mundelein and Gurnee park districts. He is a committee chairperson for the Illinois Parks and Recreation Association Lifeguard Games. He is a graduate of Illinois State University and has a degree in parks and recreation.

Craig Larsen of St. Charles has been named the chairman of The Financial Planning Association. In the role, Larsen will help guide the policy and direction of the nearly 1,000-member association that seeks to foster the value of financial planning and advance the profession nationally, as well as within Illinois, states a news release. Prior to being named chairman, Larsen served on the board of directors as president and treasurer. Larsen began his financial services career in 1987, the release states. Michelle Hurlstone has joined the Pheasant Run Resort and Spa team, as the new human resources director. Hurlstone will apply her career experience in overseeing the personnel hiring, training and management of employee benefits at the 473-room resort and expo center located in St. Charles.

Hurlstone most recently served as director of human resources for the Sheraton Chicago O’Hare. Previously, she served in the same capacity at DoubleTree by Hilton in Princeton, New Jersey, where in 2012 she won three awards, including Hostmark Hospitality Group’s Human Resources Director of the Year, Manager of the Year 2012 and DoubleTree by Hilton’s CARE Award of Excellence, according to a news release.

Jeanne Hahn recently was appointed the director of sales and marketing at the Q Center conference center in St. Charles. With nearly 22 years of hospitality experience, Hahn has had multiple sales and marketing roles at the director level throughout the Chicago area market, including Pheasant Run Resort, Marriott, Hyatt and Sofitel.

Anthony Tenerelli recently was appointed the director of group sales at the Q Center conference center in St. Charles. Tenerelli has a robust hospitality background, having worked at hotels, such as the Hyatt, Double Tree and – most recently – the Crowne Plaza O’Hare.

I have decided to have breast augmentation surgery, and I know the best time to do it would be this summer so I’ll have time to recover before school starts.

The problem is my parents are adamantly against my having this surgery. I’ve heard it all: “I wish you loved your body the way it is.” “That’s so superficial,” and “You’ll regret it!”

I would wait until I move out, but my new place (which is being built) won’t be finished until the end of the school year. I have postponed this surgery for several years, and now I have the money and I’m ready. Get in shape before joint replacement surgery Dear Doctor K: I’m having knee replacement surgery next month.

What can I do to speed my recovery and get back on my feet as quickly as possible?

Dear Reader: I’m glad you asked, because you are very important in making the outcome of your surgery completely successful.

A knee replacement is major surgery. During the procedure, the surgeon removes damaged sections of your shin bone and thigh bone. He or she cuts the bone to precisely fit the shape of the replacement implant, then attaches the artificial joint at the knee.

(I’ve put an illustration of a total knee replacement on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Joint replacement surgery is usually scheduled weeks or months in advance. That’s important, because one of the best things you can do for a successful joint replacement is to make your joint as strong and healthy as possible before your surgery. Studies have found that “prehabilitation” – exercise and strength training performed before joint replacement – can help prevent pain and speed up recovery after the fact.

Exercises that strengthen the muscles of your legs obviously are

And if you’re overweight, do what you can to lose weight: The heavier you are, the more pressure you will be placing on your new knee. Ask your doctor about “prehab” programs in your area.

In the hospital, shortly after the surgery is complete, you will be asked to start moving your feet and ankles. Your leg may be placed in a continuous passive motion (CPM) machine that bends and straightens your leg.

The hospital staff will help you get out of bed and move around.

Before you go home, you’ll be asked to show that you can get in and out of bed without help.

You’ll also have to show that you can walk with a walker, cane or crutches, and manage stairs or other obstacles you may face at home.

Once home, you should regu-

larly see a physical therapist, who can design an exercise program tailored to your individual needs and goals.

Over the next weeks and months, the more you exercise and participate in physical therapy, the more successful your recovery will be. Be diligent about performing the targeted exercises prescribed by your physical therapist.

You should also gradually increase the distance you walk or the duration you are active.

By the first week or two after surgery, you should be walking with a cane. After a few weeks, you should no longer need the cane. By three to six months, you should be back to normal.

About three to six weeks after surgery, people usually can resume their normal activities.

That includes low-impact activities such as walking, swimming and riding a bicycle. However, it may be several months before your doctor says it’s OK to resume high-impact sports.

Wait for wedding for sex Dr. Wallace: My girlfriend and I have been disagreeing about one small issue. We are very much in love and are planning to be married in July. Since you have waited this long, a couple more months shouldn’t be too long to wait. And if, for any reason, the wedding is delayed, your wait may be longer, but you will survive!

Dr. Wallace: I’m in the 12th grade, and so is the boy I’m presently dating.

This boy’s older brother (24) is in prison because he was found guilty of residential burglary and using a gun to rob a lady in a shopping mall.

My boyfriend says that his brother is a good guy who happened to get caught because he was not an experienced criminal. He says that his brother admitted his crimes and that he learned an expensive lesson that crime doesn’t pay. My boyfriend said that his brother is lonely and wants some girls to become his pen pals and wants me to get some of my female classmates to write to him.

I’m sorry that his brother is lonely, but I’m not so sure that I should recruit teenage girls to correspond with a prisoner. I’d like your opinion before I would do this. – Nameless, Detroit, Michigan

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace Dear Nameless: Prisoners do become lonely and enjoy corresponding with those of us who have compassion and might enjoy this type of correspondence. But I do not recommend that a teenage girl write to a prisoner unless she personally knows the person behind bars.

Some prisoners are masters at manipulating others and are not to be trusted. It might be wise for your boyfriend to see if some adults at a nearby church would like to be his brother’s pen pal.

Dr. Wallace: It bothers me very much when I read about kids picking on other kids because of being overweight, underweight, too short, too tall, wearing glasses or braces and a multitude of other reasons.

When I was a teen, I was bullied at school, and it still hurts when I think about it even though I’m 86 years old. But reading your column while I’m having breakfast brightens my day. Thank you for helping today’s teenagers!

At the bridge table, we do have to guess occasionally, but more often there are sufficient clues to make the right choice clear. In today’s deal, cover the South and West hands. South is in four spades. West leads the heart two. How should East plan the defense?

In the auction, West used the Unusual No-trump, showing at least 5-5 in the two lowest-ranking unbid suits: clubs and diamonds. North just blasted into four spades, hoping that if the opponents sacrificed in five clubs, partner would be able to double.

When West leads the heart two, East knows that it is either a singleton or from three cards.

When you face an either-or position like this, usually the bidding will tell you which it is.

Here, if West started with 0-3-5-5, South would have begun with an unlikely 7-1-1-4. If West held 2-1-5-5, though, South would have 5-3-1-4, which is much more probable.

So, East wins the first trick and (tries to) give his partner a heart ruff at trick two. And because East’s potential re-entry is in clubs, the lower-ranking of the other two side suits, he carefully leads his heart three, which sends a so-called suit-preference signal.

Now the pressure is on West.

After ruffing at trick two, he must trust his partner and shift to a low club. East will win with his king and deliver a second heart ruff to defeat the contract.
