H.C. Storm students finish school’s garden

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – H.C. Storm Elementary School fourth-grader Audrey O’Connell said she was glad she wore gloves Wednesday as she helped plant perennials as part of the school’s new outdoor garden.

“I don’t like touching dirt so much,” she said.

On a blustery Earth Day, Audrey and her fellow fourth-graders joined workers from West Chicago-based Grant & Power Landscaping in finishing the $19,500 project.

Of that amount, $14,500 was donated in the form of plants, mulch, edging stones and in-kind labor from Grant & Power Landscaping, Shemin Landscape Supply of Addison and Lafarge/Fox River Stone of South Elgin.

The new classroom is in the back of the school, and it features a canopy of trees for shade, shrubs, perennial plants, mulch, paver pathways and a stone teaching area. Students raised $5,000 to pay for the project’s completion.

The H.C. Storm Leadership Team held a fundraising walk, and H.C. Storm students, parents and school staff hosted a dinner fundraiser.

Health pros dish out advice at B Fit B Active Expo

The B Fit B Active Expo, hosted by the Kane County Chronicle and Suburban Life Media, featured a panel of health and fitness experts from around the area discussing ways to help jump start and sustain a healthy lifestyle.

The five professionals covered ways to take care of your body, how to set attainable fitness goals and how to turn a passion for exercise and nutrition into a successful business during the event Wednesday at Cantigny Park in Wheaton.

CrossFit trainer and nutritional enthusiast Britt Crowe said fitness, no matter the sport or exercise of choice, was about choosing long-term habits, not short-term goals.

something you can do for life,” she said.

Crowe joined Ron Anderson, who started several fitness and medical centers, world-class Ironman competitor and nutritional expert Ryan Giuliano, injury prevention expert and triathlon competitor Dr. Kevan Ketterling and fitness entrepreneur Chris Leathers on the panel.

Anderson stressed that those looking to make a change in their fitness habits need to drop the monthly binge on green detox drinks and make it permanent.

“If you have a goal in mind, whether personally, professionally, whatever it is – you have to make a conscious decision that that’s what you want,” Anderson said. “After that, you have to learn what

Properly setting goals is important for reaching them, Giuliano said. When he started his Ironman training in college, he couldn’t even swim the length of a pool, he said.

But by creating specific, measurable, realistic and timely goals, he was able to become nationally competitive in the sport. He encourages the same process for all going through the highs and lows on their individual journeys.

Ketterling said throughout the training experience, it’s important not only to have proper cross-training and form, but to listen to your body when it tells you to take a break.

Leathers said he encourages people of all ages to start and chase what they want in business and in fitness.

“It’s never too late to start,” he said. “And don’t let the fear of failure stop you from achieving your goals.”

COVER STORY ‘INSPIRING AND EDUCATIONAL’ Student-run writing club’s ‘Dear World’ missives detail concerns for peace at home, abroad

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Grace McGill, a 12-year-old sixth-grader, said bullies can “crush and liquidize a kid’s self-esteem into a smoothie.”

McGill also condemned war as the ultimate act of bullying – “And wars! What are you fighting for!? Land? Money? What’s more important to you: The few dollars you will never spend and the inch of land you will never step on, or the thousands of lives that are lost each week in war?”

McGill’s words are part of her 10-minute “Dear World” speech, one of seven by Wredling Middle School students who attend Clarissa Barbosa’s after-school creative writing club.

Clarissa, 14, is an eighth-grader from St. Charles who started the club in October. A fluid group, it attracts 10 to 25 kids at a time – including her younger sister Sofia, 12, a seventh-grader.

Participants share writings electronically, as well as read them out loud and take comments and criticism.

“I like writing,” Clarissa said, explaining why she started the group. “I just approached my teachers, and they were very supportive and open to the idea, and we made it work.”

The group writes fiction, science fiction, some poetry or whatever comes to mind, Clarissa said.

They respond to readings with snapping fingers to show they like it, offering encouragement and feedback in a lively give-and-take.

“Every week, I create a presentation about some aspect of writing,” Clarissa said.

Presentations have covered everything from foreshadowing to character development, plot lines to dialogue.

“They spoke of their wishes, not only for their generation but also for the world,” she wrote in an email. “The speeches I received were both inspiring and educational.”

Several “Dear World” speeches focused on ending

bullying and war, like Grace’s did, including one from C.J. Metz, 12, a seventh-grader from St. Charles.

“Why are we always fighting wars?” C.J. wrote. “If we start to work together and compromise, we may get

world peace.”

Regarding bullying, C.J. said it might be seen as “just teasing” but the victim sees it otherwise.

“Bullies, STOP! You probably don’t even know how much you affect the victims’

lives,” C.J. wrote. “Sometimes the victims commit suicide because of your bad actions.”

Jessica Heiser, a 14-yearold eighth-grader from St. Charles, writes under the pen name Jenny Rose. In her “Dear World” speech, she asks not to be judged because she has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair.

“I am just like you,” she wrote in her “Dear World” speech. “There is no difference between us besides my disability.”

Wredling literacy teacher Danielle Dean said Clarissa’s work with the writing club shows how motivated students are.

“She saw a need in herself and her fellow students, and she rose to meet it,” Dean said. “She is just an amazing human being.”

Crowds pack county meeting, voice opposition to Rauner’s plan 9 GENEVA – A standing-room-only crowd packed the Kane County Board Room on Wednesday, with several attendees eager to speak out against aspects of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s “Turnaround” agenda.

Corey Johnson, who represented members of Laborers Local 582, read prepared remarks that asked county leaders not to be “fooled into jumping on a bandwagon.”

“By asking you to support the ‘Turnaround’ agenda you are, in essence being asked to get on board with the governor’s personal, social agenda

and join him in pointing the finger of accusation directly at your neighbors and claim that the troubles affecting the state are somehow their fault,” he said.

“The governor is attempting to recruit you to tell your neighbors that they make too much money and that they and their families deserve less. That somehow their contribution to our community is less important than yours.

And he’s asking you to do all this for him by threatening to hold back money that belongs to this community to begin with.”

In a visit two weeks ago, Rauner asked the Kane County Board to pass a resolution

in support of his agenda. At that time, Chairman Chris Lauzen predicted there would be some points the board could endorse.

A version of the Legislative Committee’s agenda that was released Monday indicated the committee would consider the matter Wednesday, as it included a resolution endorsing the governor’s agenda.

By Wednesday, however, the agenda item had changed to discussion of a “resolution to support reform in Springfield,” causing confusion among committee members.

Co-chair Brian Pollock, D-Aurora, said Kane County will not be considering the

governor’s agenda. Rather, he said, “We’re going to do our own thing.”

The committee agreed to table the item to the Committee of the Whole meeting set for 4 p.m. Tuesday so discussion about the county’s response to reform in Springfield can involve all 24 County Board members.

With the General Assembly set to adjourn by the end of May, Pollock said if the county wants to provide input this session it needs to do it soon. The goal is to come to a consensus, he said.

“We don’t want to walk out of here divided,” he said.

Bernice was

born on May 9, 1921, and lived in Batavia most of her life. She was married to Dr. Frank Nelson for 64 years, and they had six children.

While raising her children, Bernice opened The Clothes Tree in Batavia, which later relocated to St. Charles. The Clothes Tree was successfully in business for 30 years, with the addition of her business parter and daughter, Katy.

All of her adult life, Bernice loved

to paint in oils. She loved to travel and she loved to spend time in Delray Beach, Florida. She loved to swim and enjoyed aquatic classes at Delnor’s Wellness Center well into her 80s. Her greatest joy, however, was spending time with her family, and she was welcomed into the home of her son, Kevin, and his family for the final phase of her life.

Bernice is preceded in death by

her husband; and her son, Kent.

She is survived by her children, Kris (Dick) Borchers, Karl (Tammy), Kurt, Katy Dunteman, and Kevin (Janet); 11 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. She will be missed by all.

“In Pottawatomie Threes, we work on the social and emotional skills and help children understand the classroom routine,” said Krista Mulready, supervisor of early childhood and preschool programs and summer camps for

Exploration Station Camp is designed for 3- and 4-year-olds and offers a good adjunct to the Pottawatomie Threes, Fours and Fives preschool option. Children will get a typical camp experience – nature walks, outdoor trips to the playground, nature-oriented games and crafts – while also reinforcing their budding academic and social and emotional skills.

“Through camp-like crafts, games and activities, children will explore the outdoors and broaden their world with nature and science,” Mulready said.

Exploration Station Camp will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m., beginning June 2.

McBride was a musically gifted student who graduated from the school in 1990, Nayyar wrote. The money raised for this scholarship will go to a high school senior who plans to pursue music in college.

The council hopes to raise at least $1,500, which was the amount raised during the 2014 See-Saw-A-Thon, according to Nayyar.

Council members sign up to seesaw in one-hour shifts, so that there are two people on the seesaw at all times for 24 hours straight. The overnight

hours are reserved for the senior council members, Nayyar wrote.

The wooden seesaw was made at St. Charles East with cushions installed on the ends.

Nayyar wrote that riding the seesaw does start to become uncomfortable near the end of the hour, but the students also persevere and finish their shifts.

“Most of us have not been on a seesaw since elementary or preschool, so it’s nice to have a little bit of that playfulness back,” Nayyar wrote.

The event is sponsored by the Illinois State Bar Association, in cooperation with several other bar associations.

Volunteer lawyers will be standing by to provide legal information about consumer problems, family law, estate planning, personal injury and other common legal issues.

difficulties, which may include consulting with another lawyer on the caller’s specific legal situation.

Many women will go to great lengths to increase the length of their eyelashes, from wearing lengthenhancing mascara to putting on false eye lashes.

While doing so may draw attention to the eyes, it may also hamper their ability to retain moisture and deflect airborne particles. So say researchers who examined 22 diverse species of mammals and found that optimal eyelash length was typically one third of an eye’s width. At this length, eyelashes were found to be able to reduce evaporation and dust accumulation by 50 percent. When lashes were longer than this optimal length, however, they no longer trapped air. Instead, they funneled the air into the eye, increasing air evaporation and dust accumulation.

Full income tax funding included in proposed budget Public hearing for budget set for May 4

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – North Aurora’s $20.8 million draft budget includes all of the state revenues it is supposed to receive from the state, despite the governor proposing to slash in half the local governments’ share of the state income tax.

In his fiscal 2016 budget address, Gov. Bruce Rauner proposed a 50 percent reduction in the local share of the income tax. North Aurora would lose about $830,000 under his proposal.

North Aurora village trustees recently approved a resolution urging Rauner and the Illinois General Assembly to protect full funding of the local government distributive fund revenues. North Aurora Finance Director Bill Hannah said the budget doesn’t assume any changes by the state.

“We will still be monitoring what the state does,” Hannah told village trustees at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting. “If we need to, we will

revisit it.”

The budget projects $20.1 million in revenues and $20.8 million in expenses. The village’s general fund, which is its chief operating fund, shows revenues of $10.1 million and expenses of $9.9 million.

The budget is for June 1, 2015, through May 31, 2016.

Personnel expenses, which represent 33 percent of all expenses in the budget, are estimated to be $6,817,962, a $114,047 increase during last year.

The budget includes three new full-time positions, including a new police officer. In the proposed budget, Hannah said sales tax revenue is projected to increase to $4.3 million in the coming year – an increase of 5.8 percent – as economic activity in the village continues to increase “across the board.”

“Over 25 new businesses have opened, and several restaurants are in various stages of looking to open or be constructed over the next several months,” Hannah said.

A public hearing on the budget is set for May 4.

Incidents occurred early Saturday morning

Police said he was caught breaking into a car in Batavia Jeffrey Jay early Saturday.

Jeffrey Jay Hawkins Jr. Hawkins Jr., of the 2000 block of Lilac Lane, Aurora, has been charged with four felony counts of burglary, along with possession of a controlled substance and criminal damage to property.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Hawkins was in custody in the Kane County Jail on a $75,000 bond.

Hawkins was in possession

of 21 pills of generic Adderall at the time of his arrest, according to court records. He also was charged with criminal damage to property for damaging the dashboard of a Ford pickup truck. The damage was less than $300.

According to Batavia police reports, a resident in the 500 block of South Batavia Avenue called 911 after seeing a person running away from a car as an alarm was going off.

Hawkins was arrested at 2:42 a.m., and police said he admitted to police he stole items from several cars, including a tablet, an iPod, a bag of coins, lighters and other miscellaneous items. The cars were in the 500 block of South Batavia Avenue and the 200 block of South Harrison Street, according to court records.

Eighteen candles Today marks the biggest day of my life thus far – my 18th birthday. Yesterday, I was merely a child, and now I am an adult. Does this mean I should start learning how to do my own laundry?

Nonetheless, since I am now 18, there’s a whole list of things I am now legally able to do.

First off, there are a few political matters that I can finally participate in, such as voting in elections, or serving on a jury.

However, I’m not too sure how fun serving on a jury truly is.

In fact, I hear it’s not exciting at all. But hey, I’m curious as to what goes down during a court case. It would be thrilling to be a juror on a murder case, right?

Similarly, I can now file a lawsuit. Yet, I have no idea why I would need to file a lawsuit anytime in the near future.

Therefore, currently this privilege is sort of useless.

As well, I can now rent my own apartment, buy my own house and buy my own lottery ticket. Never will I need to wait for my relatives to send me holiday cards in order to play those dumb little scratchoff money games. I now can show off my unlucky skills as I attempt to pick the winning lottery numbers, hopefully winning $100 million as a result.

And by being 18, I finally am able to get my father’s name off my checking account. No offense to my dad, but it is nice knowing that I can just deal with my money personally without having anyone else’s name attached to it. Don’t worry; I’m pretty good with spending my money wisely.

It’s not like I have more than 10 pairs of shoes or anything. My

Additionally, it’s odd to think I can officially get married, get divorced and adopt a kid all before the age of 20.

I even can apply for a credit card, and get a butterfly tattoo without parental permission if I so desire. Oh, now I have a few ideas up my sleeve. Next week, I may have a tattoo of a cliché quote on my shoulder; stay tuned.

In reality, what will I do today to celebrate my birthday?

It’s highly likely that I’ll just go out to dinner with my family to a restaurant of my choosing.

After all, it’s not a birthday unless I get to choose what my family and I eat for supper.

After our meal, later tonight I’ll blow out a few trick birthday candles while my parents and brothers awkwardly sing to me.

When I realize it, my life is slowly unfolding before my eyes. With my high school graduation less than a month away, I finally believe that I’m ready to really “begin” my life. I know that I’m young and completely inexperienced with life, but isn’t that the beauty of turning 18 years old?

What is presidential entrant Rubio’s secret?

By JENNIFER RUBIN The Washington Post More than other 2016 presidential entrants, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., seems to have positively affected, even excited, Republicans.

Ross Douthat writes, “Rubio more than most candidates fits the way most Republicans want to think about their party and ideology and cause.” There is much to that, and certainly Republicans want to get away from the dig that they are “grumpy,” “angry” or downright “mean.”

So how does Rubio do it?

Arthur Brooks, head of the American Enterprise Institute and arguably the godfather of reform conservatism, likes to say: “My movement shouldn’t be fighting against things. My movement should be fighting for people.”

Rather than rail against government, against liberalism, against “the liberal welfare state,” Republicans need to remember that people want

politicians to fight for people like them. Brooks wrote in the Wall Street Journal: “Some say the solution for conservatives is either to redouble the attacks on big government per se, or give up and try to build a better welfare state. Neither path is correct. Raging against government debt and tax rates that most Americans don’t pay gets conservatives nowhere, and it will always be an exercise in futility to compete with liberals on government spending and transfers.

“Instead, the answer is to make improving the lives of vulnerable people the primary focus of authentically conservative policies. For example, the core problem with out-of-control entitlements is not that they are costly – it is that the impending insolvency of Social Security and Medicare imperils the social safety net for the neediest citizens. Education innovation and school choice are

not needed to fight rapacious unions and bureaucrats – too often, the most prominent focus of conservative education concerns – but because poor children and their parents deserve better schools.”

Whether consciously or not, that is what Rubio is doing. His announcement speech was devoid of attacks on “the establishment.” He was not arguing against things; he was arguing for people.

For all the talk about anger and mistrust of government, voters don’t want to believe evil forces (government, congressional leaders, Big Business, immigrants) are out to get them. Rubio’s message of optimism, success, opportunity and dignity is timely and a change from vague appeals to entrepreneurism and sterile lessons in market economics and the Founders.

You would think all politicians would get this, but Rubio is unique in the field so far.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

POWER OF POSITIVITY Former Tri-Cities resident John Rosensteel releases self-titled debut album

Rosensteel, 20, plays most of the instruments on the self-titled album.

He formerly lived in Geneva and St. Charles and now calls the Twin Cities home.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to interview Rosensteel about the new album.

Eric Schelkopf: You just released your self-titled debut album. In sitting down to make the album, what were your goals?

John Rosensteel: I was kind of immersed in music in my childhood, so one of my main goals was just to put together something where I could let my creativity run wild.

I was able to put together all the different parts on all the different instruments, and then go in and come out with a song.

So that was a lot of fun for me.

And then I also wanted to make sure that lyrically and musically, the music just had

a positive message about it.

There’s a lot of negative music out there, and plenty of places where you can find songs with a negative sort of message. I wanted to kind of be the antithesis of that.

Schelkopf: And you played most of the instruments on this album?

Rosensteel: I did. I did all the drums, and I did all the guitars.

There were a couple of guitar solos where I passed the torch along to a friend. But for the most part, I did all the guitar solos as well.

I did most of the bass guitar parts, and there were a couple of songs that had piano, so I did the piano as well. The only instruments that I didn’t have any hand in were the brass and the woodwinds.

Schelkopf: What was the challenge in playing multiple instruments on this album?

Rosensteel: It was very challenging just putting it all together. I’m generally a pretty driven guy, so I enjoyed the challenge.

It’s a lot to account for when you have a song and it’s all in your head, and somehow, you have to spill that out onto six different instruments. The entire project consisted of about 40 different tracks.

And then you just put it all together, one small piece at a time. But it was a project. Each song was a significant project.

Am” you reference Mark Hensel, who was your boss at the Norris Recreation Center in St. Charles. There are lyrics that say, “You know that left leg can’t hold Mark Hensel back as long as he’s still got his right on the right track.”

Tell me about the song.

Rosensteel: Within six months before I started working there in 2012, he had gotten into a big motorcycle accident. He was hit head-on at about 40 mph.

His left leg was severed, from the knee cap down to the foot. His leg had been reconstructed surgically, and he was just under intense pain on a daily basis.

But he would have a smile on, and have a really great attitude. He bore it with a lot of grace.

For me, watching that had a big impression on me.

Schelkopf: On the song “Here I

say in the song?

Rosensteel: It’s kind of a message of humility, and it’s sort of a tribute to Mark, the impression he left on me through all that.

Despite all he was experiencing, he kind of took me under his wing. I’m very appreciative to him for that, and for the experience of working under him.

Schelkopf: Has he heard the song?

Rosensteel: He has. But I haven’t talked to him about the song or the lyric.

Schelkopf: I understand you’ve already started on your next album.

Rosensteel: We just finished the first track at Gremlen Studios in Aurora. All the recording took place in Minnesota for the first album, and then the mixing and mastering and production was done at Gremlen Studios.

22 Two rosés hail from vastly

different regions of Italy The time was right for Stemmari and Mezzacorona to introduce a rosé.

After years of planning, the wineries found unique locations where altitude, soil and climate could play a role in the character of the wine. Both would be excellent, affordable companions to a spring brunch and are widely available.

Also featured this week are four food-friendly wines all hailing from different countries.

Winemaker spotlight Stemari and Mezzacorona winemaker Dr. Lucio Matricard saw a great way to express two grape varieties not usually associated with rosé.

The Mezzacorona Rosé 2014 ($9.99) and Stemmari Rosé 2014 ($9.99) hail from vastly different regions of Italy and each provides an expression of the vineyards from which they come.

Both are managed differently.

The northern vineyards of Mezzacorona have the Alps to influence their climate and use pergola trellising to limit frost potential and maximize ripeness. Grown in vineyards with calcareous rock, the wine is more elegant and less fruit forward.

There are still fresh strawberry flavors, but a hint of green geranium and thyme present on the nose and finish combined with the crisp acidity to add diversity.

Stemmari is a bit darker in color and fuller bodied. Its southern warmer origins show with more pronounced red fruit and berry flavors. While daytime temperatures can approach 100 degrees during the growing season, guyot-trained vines have bushier tops and protect the berries from being scorched.

A maritime breeze helps preserve acidity as well.

“In Mezzacorona, we worked several years on Lagrien grapes cultivated at around 1,200 feet,” Matricardi said. “With a pergola semplice trained canopy in a unique alpine climate, the canopy, elevation and excursion of temperature allow the grapes to reach a perfect aroma ripening, yet, still preserve fantastic and fragrant acidity.

“In Sicily, we discovered the amazing richness of Nero d’Avola grapes that on the sandy and

What to buy Avignonesi, Desiderio, 2010 ($60): This super Tuscan merlot (85 percent) and cabernet sauvignon (15 percent) blend from southern Italy opens up nicely after being uncorked a few hours. There is vanilla and espresso on the nose. Flavors of blueberry, tobacco, chocolate, clove and cedar mingle nicely.

The tannins were firm at first but gradually yielded to a velvety mouthfeel.

Domaine Laroque, Cité De Carcassonne 2013 ($11.99): Laroque translated to English is “the rock,” thusly named due to the stone age menhirs, massive upright standing stones, found in the southern France vineyards. It’s 100 percent cabernet franc and quite fruity for the varietal.

There’s a hint of the traditional cab franc funk and green pepper notes, but more red berry flavors come through on a great, low alcohol – only 13 percent – food wine.

Steelhead Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($14.99): Ruby red color in the glass with gentle tannins. The nose has a little wet earth and star anise. Flavors of black cherry and cigar wrapper mingle in a brooding, moody wine. It’s an amazing feat for consulting winemaker Hugh Chapelle to create a brilliantly complex wine at such a value price. At this price, I recommend buying it by the case. Look for a fulllength feature story on Steelhead in an upcoming column.

Trapiche Broquel Chardonnay 2013 ($18): Argentine winemaker Daniel Pi has crafted a great wine for spring with snappy red apple skin and pear flavors.

Friends of St. Charles library to host Spring Used Book Sale PLANIT KANE planitkanenews@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Friends of St. Charles Public Library will host its annual Spring Used Book Sale this weekend.

The sale will take place between 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 24; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 25; and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 26, in the library’s Huntley Meeting Room. Shoppers can purchase a bag of books for $10 on the final day of the sale.

The book sale will include paperbacks, hardcovers, CDs, DVDs, videos, audio tapes and more. Books and materials will be available for all ages and interests,

including children’s, classics, cooking, crafts, gardening, history, hobbies, fine arts, mystery, romance, science, sports, travel, westerns and more.

Purchases now can be made with a Visa or MasterCard.

Established in 1979, the Friends of St. Charles Library raises funds in support of the library for the benefit and enhancement of its services, programs, facilities, staff and the community, according to a news release.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A pocket of softball fans accelerated tradition Wednesday afternoon, singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the second inning of St. Charles East’s home game against St. Charles North.

In past springs, Jillian Waslawski might have been part of the chorus. She’s close with her older sister, North senior center fielder Kaitlyn Waslawski, and usually attended her games.

This time, however, Jillian Waslawski was charged with ensuring the Saints didn’t stretch the Upstate Eight Conference River Division rival North Stars into extra innings.

With a runner aboard, two outs and East trailing by a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, the freshman righthander delivered, getting the Saints’ Alex Latoria on a popup to conclude a 4-3 win.

“It’s really cool to be a part of it and be on the field now,” Jillian Waslawski said.

North (11-3, 7-2 UEC River) handed East (14-3, 7-2) its second loss in as many days.

A three-run first inning set the tone for the North Stars, who scored runs on a passed ball, a botched rundown and third baseman Erin Nemetz’s RBI single.

Jordyn Wolfe’s run-scoring sacrifice extended North’s lead an inning later, and despite Saints righty Jordan Hall’s sterling recovery down the stretch, the deficit ultimately proved too much for the Saints.

“You know what, whether [runs were] earned or unearned, depending on, obviously, how you score it, we need to do a better job to start,” East coach Kelly Horan said.

“We did some very good things in this game, and sometimes, when you have such a great

The North Stars channeled their own productive recent workouts, which have hinged on defense and boosted the team’s resolve as well as its skill level.

Even as Latoria, an Evansville-bound third baseman, fouled away pitches in the seventh – her opposite field double in the third drove in East’s

first run of the game – North maintained its poise.

“In the beginning, we were really relaxed, and we just knew we had to play our game,” North shortstop Allison Hausl said. “I mean, toward the end, when it got close, we had confidence in Jillian and we had confidence in our defense.

We knew if we stayed calm, we could get the win.”

Course officials stay busy despite weather

But unlike most area homeowners who have less than an acre of property in their front or back yards, Garland, the Mill Creek Golf Club general manager, has about 200 acres to tend as the Geneva course is prepared for play.

There’s just one thing that has kept Garland, area golf courses and golfers in a holding pattern when it comes to golf season getting underway.

The weather.

While most die-hard golfers will roll up their mud-splattered khakis to keep dry, layer their clothes to keep warm or enclose their cart with vinyl zippered panels to provide shelter from the wind and cold, the masses truly begin to end winter’s golf hibernation

with warm temperatures.

“Everyone here is beyond excited to get play started,” Garland said. “We got teased a few weeks ago with some nice weather, but we are definitely ready to get things restarted.”

••• As golfers wait out Mother Nature’s fickle tendency to deliver pleasant weather on a consistent basis, Phillips Park Golf Course PGA professional Jeff Schmidt oversees a massive cleanup. Fairways, bunkers and greens have to be cleared.

A growing season’s worth of leaves was deposited beneath the winter snow that blanketed the Aurora course.

There are branches and twigs scattered throughout Phillips Park, victims of howling winter winds.

Unlike Major League Baseball, which recently celebrated its Opening Day, Schmidt can’t adhere to a consistent open every season. Phillips

Park came out of winter without any turf damage, and he said the course “is in fantastic shape.”

“It’s always a soft open for us,” said Schmidt, who added Phillips Park hosted to its first 2015 rounds March 16.

“It’s unpredictable this time of year until the weather gets consistently better.”

Once high schools and colleges let out for summer break, Garland and Schmidt have staffs that triple in size.

••• While the Creekside Tavern at Mill Creek is open on winter weekends and is patronized regularly because it offers multiple professional sports packages on its five TVs, spring and summer will see a drastic sales increase.

The par-3 course at Mill Creek costs only $5 through the end of May and can be a shortgame tune up facility or haven for youth golfers to hone their skills.

At Phillips Park, it means a switch from prepackaged snacks like danishes, muffins and candy bars to more prepared foods.

The smell of fried fish is also an indication that an increase in rounds played is near. In what has become a staple at Hughes Creek Golf Club, on May 1, the Friday Night Fish Fry signals the start of another weekend.

“We find that people are really drawn to the open spaces we offer,” said Hughes Creek PGA Professional Sam Bradberry, who added the greens at the Elburn course are in good shape and have healed nicely from last fall’s aeration. “It’s a peaceful distraction to come out to the course. There aren’t a lot of houses out here and we offer an alternative to the hustle and bustle they experience east of here. It’s a nice way to get away from it all.”

A getaway from the work week and a return to summer, golf season is quickly approaching.

Vikings hand Saints first conference loss

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva baseball coach Matt Hahn thought his team’s record up until its series with St. Charles East was not indicative of how it has played this season.

After losing the series opener, the Vikings got RBI singles from Jack Wassel and Jason Croci on Wednesday to beat East, 3-1, and hand the Saints their first Upstate Eight Conference River Division loss.

In the past, Hahn has been used to his teams using power to win games, but knows if this year’s team is going to be successful, it will have to find other ways to win.

“That’s just not the type of team we are this year,” Hahn said. “We are going to have to find ways to win games using small ball or things like we were able to do today.”

Geneva (7-6, 4-4 UEC River)

used two separate hit-and-run plays to start rallies that led to runs, which were at a premium for the second straight day between the two teams.

Tuesday’s final score was also 3-1, but in the Saints’ favor, setting up the rubber game today at East.

Mitchell Merges (1-1) worked in and out of trouble on the mound for the Vikings despite allowing just two hits in six innings. Merges threw 111 pitches, but none were more important than the ones he threw to his last two batters

in the sixth.

Merges struck out East’s Jake Milosch and got Max Powers to fly out to center with runners on second and third with a two-run lead.

“He didn’t have his best stuff today,” Hahn said. “We can use the term ‘effectively wild.’ He found ways to get it done and wiggle out of jams. That’s what you ask your pitchers to do, and he was able to do enough to get us a win today.”

The junior pitcher allowed no earned runs, struck out six and walked four. He also delivered two of the Vikings’ seven hits at the plate.

East (12-3, 7-1) did not lose because of a lack of baserunners, but more a lack of getting the hits at the opportune time.

Coach Len Asquini knows anytime his team and Geneva meet, the games are going to be a battle and expects nothing less for the series finale.

“We always seem to get

games like this,” Asquini said. “We created chances, but when we needed that one hit or one play to be made, we couldn’t find a way today. I credit their guys for keeping us off balance.”

Nick Porretto came in to pitch the seventh for Geneva. He allowed runners to get to second and third with two outs but got Anthony Adduci to ground out to Wassel to end the game.

“We had to make it interesting at the end,” Hahn said.

“Other Geneva teams have had better records at this point in the season, but I like how we are playing and where this team is at right now.”

When asked if Wednesday’s two-hit loss would provide a bit of motivation for the Saints in today’s finale, Asquini smiled.

“I’d like to think so,” he said. “We will certainly see tomorrow.”

AURORA – After both Jake Radel and Foster Heise made fielding errors in the second inning of Wednesday’s game against Marmion, St. Francis baseball coach Nick Hall went to the mound to talk with his team, but more specifically those two Spartans.

“I challenged both of them,” Hall said. “I challenged them to make a play to make up for it. Needless to say, they both responded.”

Both Radel and Heise got hits in each of their next two at-bats to spark rallies for the Spartans, who earned a Suburban Christian Conference sweep with an 8-5 win.

St. Francis (9-7, 3-0 SCC) scored four runs in the second inning.

Hall also thought a large part of the success offensively had to do with the Spartans’ approach at the plate, especially after they fell behind in the count.

“We had a really good twostrike approach all game,” Hall said. “Just keeping things much more simple in that spot allowed us to take advantage of small things. We took the extra base a couple times, as well. We did a lot of the small things today that you need to do to get wins.”

Squad feels it’s closer to a breakthrough

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Cougars third baseman Cody Regis offered a lesser-known rhyming moniker for the club’s weekday matinees before Wednesday’s noon first pitch.

Add “Show & Go” to “Wake & Rake” or “Rise & Grind.” Whatever your pleasure, the Cougars didn’t sulk about showing up to work on the Cody Regis morning of an eventual 2-1 loss to Clinton.

“I mean, the process might be a little different depending on if it’s a night game, a day game,” Regis said. “You get back from a long bus ride or whatnot. But the focus once the game starts has got to be the same if you want to go out and compete and succeed.”

The Cougars, 5-9 entering today’s 11 a.m. series and homestand finale against the LumberKings (6-8) feel they’re moving toward a breakthrough either way.

“The first week of the season, we really scrapped, really had to find out who we really were and how we have to win games,” designated hitter Steve McQuail said. “We’ve hit some rough patches along the way, but I think as a team, we’re gradually getting better. We’re having a lot better at-bats. Our approaches are getting better.

We just have to make sure we come through with the big hit when we have those runners in scoring position. But other than that, I think we’ve really progressed as a team.”

All the better if that can occur during the Midwest League’s unpredictable April weather.

Right about the time they had finished singing along – or squirming – to the “SpongeBob SquarePants” theme, a youth-infused Ozzie’s Reading Club Day crowd dodged light snow flurries in the third inning.

Steve McQuail Cougars designated hitter hander Brad Keller – a Snellville, Georgia, native who struck out 10 in six innings of three-hit, two-run ball – said the ball “felt like a snowball” in the early going. Game time temperature was a season-low 43 degrees, with winds blowing at 21 mph.

McQuail, a 25-year old Queens, New York, native who played 163 games with the independent league Schaumburg Boomers from 2012 to 2013, knows the drill.

“I’ve been around this area a little bit, and I really like to hit here,” McQuail said. “It’s a little cold, a little windy, but for some reason, I love it here.”

Clinton is learning to embrace the Tri-Cities, too. If today’s game is completed as scheduled, the LumberKings will have played as many games at home – six – as they have at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Three games at Kane County started at noon or earlier.

“I don’t mind, especially on a day like today where taking BP in the cold doesn’t really do anybody any good,” LumberKings third baseman Joe DeCarlo said. “When you just go out and play, there’s nothing wrong with that. I don’t mind it at all.”

NOTEWORTHY ‘Good mixture’ leading Bulldogs Batavia softball coach Lupe Castellanos serves as a campus monitor during the school day, so he knows the merits of staying the course.

That attribute serves him well considering the youth of the Bulldogs’ pitching staff. Batavia is hovering around .500 as freshman Kaylan Waldron and sophomores Rachael Lovestrand and Alena Theis shoulder much of the workload in the circle.

“It’s just getting innings. They’re just getting better each outing,” Castellanos said. “They’re just learning and growing because pitching at the varsity level is a new experience for them. One through nine, you’ve got strong hitters, and I feel like each game they pick something up and adapt.”

Castellanos still considers Lovestrand to be in that number, even though she gained valuable experience last season.

One of her season highlights came around this time in 2014, when she about singlehandedly defeated South Elgin.

Lovestrand pitched a three-hit shutout and smacked the two-run double that accounted for the game’s only runs.

Batavia relies on plenty of senior leadership away from the mound, including at vital spots up the middle, where center fielder Ryanne Rokos and middle infielder Elyse Burns offer stability.

Coming off a runner-up finish in the West Aurora tournament over the weekend, Batavia rebounded from Monday’s loss to St. Charles East with a blowout win Tuesday against East Aurora.

“It’s just a good mixture,” Castellanos said. “We’re starting to get girls back in the mix here and starting to hit our stride here a little bit.”

Geary represents Vikes’ brand There’s still plenty of time left in Geneva senior shortstop Anna Geary’s prep career, not to mention the foreseeable legacy coach Greg Dierks sees lasting for a while.

Dierks, in his 26th season, knows something about longevity. He also knows Geary’s offseason commitment to NCAA Division I Miami of Ohio can have an appreciable pipeline for players coming through the lower levels.

“It’s just good advertisement for the program altogether, and she’s a good

representative for us,” Dierks said.

Geary, who has been a constant during the Vikings’ 8-4 start entering Wednesday, appreciates the endorsement, and hopes others can follow suit.

“I think there’s lot of girls on our team who also have a lot of potential, and hopefully everyone continues with softball in their careers in college and stuff,” Geary said.

Opposite way In the midst of an abbreviated road stretch that sees it go 18 days between scheduled home games, Kaneland knows its offensive approach must be well-traveled, too.

For the Knights, that starts with ensuring right-handed hitters keep their thoughts fixed on going the opposite way when it’s possible.

“A lot of kids with outside pitches, they try to pull that ball,” Knights coach Peter Goff said. “The girls do a great job of going with the pitch and taking it to right, right center for extra bases.”

HITTING REWIND Neuqua Valley snapped St. Charles East’s five-game winning streak with Tuesday’s 7-1 road victory. The Saints opened the season with nine consecutive victories before Fremd rolled, 11-3, in the nightcap of a doubleheader. Entering Wednesday, the Saints had played just a single one-run game, defeating West Aurora, 2-1.

Walking is natural, but do it right for best results Dear Doctor K: I’d like to start walking more for exercise. Is there a “correct” way to walk in order to reduce the risk of injury?

Dear Reader: Walking comes so naturally to most of us that we may not even give a second thought to proper walking technique. But bad walking habits can lead to a host of problems.

What could be more natural than walking? We’ve been doing it since we were toddlers. It is natural, but in fact a complex series of things happens when we walk. First, your heel touches the ground, absorbing the impact of your weight. As the rest of your foot reaches the ground, your weight shifts forward to the ball of your foot and your toes.

Meanwhile, your arch partially flattens and the plantar fascia – the ligament-like structure that connects the heel to the ball of the foot – is stretched. Then your weight shifts again as you begin to rise on your toes and the ball of your foot, with the Achilles tendon lifting your ankle. Your body is propelled over that foot, with the weight passing onto the other foot.

Before walking, take some time to stretch the muscles on the bottom of your feet: • Stand with feet together.

• Hold for 20 to 30 seconds.

• Repeat with your right foot.

I’ve put an illustration of this exercise on my website, AskDoctorK.com. It’s also a good idea to stretch your legs and upper body in addition to your feet.

After stretching, hit the road, starting out slowly if it’s the first time you’ve exercised in a while. And if it is the first time in a while, aim for 20 minutes three times a week, walking at a comfortable pace. Pick up the pace, time, distance and frequency gradually.

Here are some other tips to protect your feet: • Make sure your shoes provide enough support but allow your feet to “breathe.”

• Walk with your head up and your back straight. I hate to sound like your mother or your kindergarten teacher, but posture is really important when walking.

If your posture is not good, your weight is distributed abnormally.

Pressure is put on your leg joints, and your leg and low back muscles may be strained.

• Start on level ground; work up to hills later.

• Cool down after walking. You can do so with stretching exercises or, if you’ve been walking briskly, by walking at a slower pace.

We’re fortunate that something so easy, natural and inexpensive as walking can improve our health. With a little attention to doing it right, you can get all the benefits without any complications.

In today’s deal, East has to find the deadly defense. South is in three no-trump. West leads the club two. Given the auction, what should East do?

East should start to count declarer’s hand during the bidding. From South’s two-heart rebid, a reverse showing at least a good 17 points, East knows that South has four hearts and at least five diamonds. From West’s opening lead, showing exactly a four-card suit, East learns that South also has three clubs. This means South surely has 1-4-5-3 distribution.

This ought to point to the right answer. East should win the first trick with his club ace and shift to the spade king.

He leads the king just in case declarer has the singleton queen.

Since East has diamonds under control, the defenders should win five tricks before South collects nine.

With the given layout, that’s exactly how the deal pans out.

Declarer ducks a couple of spades, wins with dummy’s ace on the third round, and tries to run the diamonds. When they don’t break, he has to dislodge the club king to get out for down one.
