From music camp to Carnegie Hall Music is such an integral part of our lives. It can lift our spirits when we’re feeling down, get us on our feet and feeling energized, or take us back in time to a long-ago memory.

Those who play an instrument have a greater appreciation for the melodies and harmonies that make up a song.

Many start learning to play as children and hone their skills throughout their lifetime. For most, it takes many years of practice to learn the intricacies of an instrument.

And then there are the Dixon Anderson’s of the world.

Two summers ago, Anderson’s music teachers at Rotolo Middle School suggested he participate in the Batavia Park District’s Encore Summer Music Camp.

His parents, Dan and Irene, also encouraged him to join.

He had played the piano for several years, as well as the saxophone, in his school band, but Anderson began thinking about playing a string instrument in the Encore Orchestra.

“I really liked the sound

of the strings and the orchestra,” Anderson said. “My friend was a violinist, and I thought it would be fun to be able to play with a group of friends.”

Anderson initially leaned toward the violin, as well, but the Encore teachers mentioned that they needed a cellist. He tried several instruments and eventually settled on the cello.

It has been two years since Anderson began playing the cello in the Encore Summer Music Camp, and this summer will be his third year playing. He also has taken up lessons and plays with the Rotolo Middle School Orchestra. Anderson recently won second place in the Fox River Youth Symphony Orchestra concerto competition and will be a featured soloist in the FRYSO spring concert.

In addition, five Batavia

orchestra students recently were selected to play Carnegie Hall this summer as part of the 2014 Middle School Honors Performance Series.

A total of 80 students from the United States and Canada were chosen. A Rotolo Middle School teacher nominated several students, and after a lengthy selection process that included an audition tape submission, Anderson was selected, along with four other students.

“Dixon has always been musical, even as a baby,” said his mother, Irene. “As his brother August says, the minute Dixon started playing cello it was as though gold flowed through his fingertips.

Dixon has improved at an unheard of pace, and we are all beyond thrilled with his accomplishments.”

Anderson grew up surrounded by music. His dad, Dan, is a musician and often practices at home. His brother also has a love of music and plays a variety of instruments.

This is a 21-and-over event, as there will be alcohol served. The event will feature live music by the Good Ole Boys Band, a pig roast by Dave’s Slow Food and a silent auction that will feature more than 30 gift baskets with items donated from local shops

and restaurants.

Tickets to the event are $45, a portion of which is tax deductible, and can be bought at the St. Charles History Museum.

Also available for purchase are tax-deductible raffle tickets at $10 each for a chance to win one of three $1,000 cash prizes.

This summer, Anderson will proudly represent Batavia as he spends four days at Carnegie Hall in New York City, taking master classes and performing on stage. Then he will return to once again participate in the Encore Summer Music Camp.

The Encore Orchestra will perform at the Riverwalk on July 24, so the entire community will be able to share in Anderson’s talent.

“The camp is such a great way for the kids to stay connected with friends while playing music,” Irene Anderson said. “I love how the program culminates in a concert at the Riverwalk.”

ROBOTICS ON THE RISE Aspiring engineers find success on St. Charles-based team

T. CHARLES – For hours at a time, groups of teenagers gather in an area of Genesis Automation in St. Charles, working to prepare a robot for competitions. At a recent practice, the place buzzed with activity, as teens did their jobs in preparation of a major upcoming event.

The PWNAGE team, made up of members from throughout the Tri-Cities, Kaneland, Aurora and beyond, will take a significant step starting today at the FIRST World Championships for robotics in St. Louis. The competition stretches through Saturday at the Edward Jones Dome.

No matter how the team fares at the world competition, its members are considering this to be a successful season.

The team’s website defines PWNAGE as “to rule, to own, to dominate.” The FIRST organization means, for inspiration and recognition of science and technology.

The competition is a little like handball, with competing teams at times working together during the event. Team members described the entire experience as kind of a simulation of a real-world company. Each person has a role that must be carried out.

David Mahler, a junior from Batavia, drives the robot, a task he said can be stressful.

Most team members can put in more than 25 hours in a week, working out issues and practicing for a competition. Then, during a competition, a lot of time can be spent waiting for a few minutes of action.

But team members, most of whom say they aspire to become engineers, say they can’t get enough of it. Nick Bowgren, a junior from Batavia, said participants meet after school from 5 to 9 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Thomas Kein, a junior from Batavia, said some team members spent extra time coming in during spring break.

“If they put cots here, we’d be here all the time,” Kein said.

Team members work with mentors and get help from Genesis owners Scott and Bonnie Hale. The opportunity to get a hands-on learning experience is a big draw for future engineers. And some said the fact that the team draws members from so many schools – eight in all – is appealing as well.

McKenna Haller, a senior from Metea Valley High School, said the team is “built like an engineering company.”

She said 96 percent of participants on the team aspire to become engineers.

Tristan Powell, a sophomore from Kaneland High School, said he was the driver for the robot last year. He said he came to the team after seeing it in action during an NIU STEM festival, and “[he] thought it was pretty cool.”

He described it as “a real-work environment.”

“There are deadlines that are almost impossible to make and other things that come along that won’t be possible to fix,” he said, saying those on the team learn to find solutions.

Getting this far is a big deal for the team. Haller said that, after working so hard for years on the goal, she “broke into tears” when PWNAGE qualified. Powell agreed that it is “a big deal” and “puts us ahead of most of the teams in the area.”

Kein said the team in the past had been thought of as “just below a powerhouse team,” and that this year’s results will improve that reputation.

“The robot is great this year, and things went our way,” he said.

The hearing will begin at 7 p.m. in the Hemmens Auditorium, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin.

The Grand Prairie Gateway was proposed as a means to improve electric system reliability and alleviate constraints on the electricity

grid.

The ICC is considering the ComEd petition to install, operate and maintain this new overhead electric transmission line and other related facilities necessary for its operation, in Docket 13-0657.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia School District 101 board members Tuesday debated whether to have middle school and high school students pay more in registration fees so the district could purchase additional Google Chromebooks for students.

Board members voted 5-2 to approve the district’s 21st Century Learning Plan, with board members Jon Gaspar and Gregg Hodge voting “no.” The plan calls for the district to provide a personal

device to all students within two years. The device for students in kindergarten to second grade has not yet been determined.

The plan calls for a $75 student registration fee increase for grades six to 12 and the upgrade of the district’s wireless network at a cost of $275,000. District staff plans to present a recommendation in May to purchase Chromebooks for students in those grades.

The district’s total cost for this year’s program is $890,020.

high school students pay $119 annually in registration fees.

With the cost of Google Chromebooks at $300 each, a $75 a year increase in fees would pay for half of the device. The Chromebooks have an expected lifespan of two years.

Hodge said he would like to get more public input before making a decision.

ST. CHARLES – The City of St. Charles Visitors Cultural Commission is soliciting requests for funding from organizations that support and promote tourism, culture, history and the arts in St. Charles.

The following eligibility guidelines will be used to determine which organizations will be recommended for funding. Organizations must: • Be based in St. Charles.

• Be certified by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501 nonprofit corporation.

• Be in operation for a minimum of two years.

• Provide the most recently completed annual report and the current budget, outlining anticipated programs and expenditures • Provide IRS Form 990.

Coroner’s office collects unwanted prescriptions GENEVA – Kane County Coroner Rob Russell stated that the Kane County Coroner’s Office has recently become a collection site for disposal of prescription drugs.

Proper prescription drug disposal is important because studies have shown that prescription drug abuse promotes heroin use and addiction.

Many prescriptions, such as painkillers, have frequently been stolen from medicine cabinets of homes, because people who no longer need them are unaware of an outlet to get rid of them properly.

Russell said his office is available to accept prescription drugs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the coroner’s office at 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva.

Russell also said that he will be participating in the National Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the office.

Oberweis pushes proposal for minimum wage increase

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, still hopes to convince Democrats that his proposed minimum-wage increase is the better option for Illinois.

Oberweis’ plan, only for those age 26 and older, gradually would increase the minimum wage from $8.25 to $10 an hour in 2017. Oberweis decided that age 26 should be the cutoff because that’s the age when people no longer can be covered under their parents’ health insurance.

Oberweis thinks that partisan politics will play a role in the success or defeat of his proposal. A separate minimum wage increase plan by State Sen. Kimberly Lightford, D-Maywood, advanced out of Illinois Senate committee in March. Lightford’s plan calls for a gradual minimum wage increase to $10.65 an hour in 2016.

A federal minimum wage increase would move an estimated 900,000 people above the poverty line, but it would

cost about 500,000 jobs, according to the report.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin is one of several legislators pushing to see the federal $10.10 increase. Oberweis is running against Durbin in November’s general election.

“Sen. Durbin believes that Sen. Oberweis’ proposal is fundamentally flawed,” said Ron Holmes, a Durbin spokesman.

He said Durbin wants all workers to have a shot at making a decent living, including college students, veterans and young parents.

Oberweis said that minimum-wage jobs ultimately give people experience to qualify for a higher-paying job. In theory, younger employees will need on-the-job training and haven’t earned a higher minimum wage.

In response to the criticism of exclusion, Oberweis said that no legislation is perfect but his plan won’t cost jobs.

“We’ve offered a good compromise, an alternative solution,” Oberweis said.

ST. CHARLES – Janet G. Gorecki, of St. Charles, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014. She was born Sept. 14, 1941, to Paul J. Copia and Margaret Mary Copia (nee Marshall) in Oak Park.

Her childhood was spent in DeKalb, where she attended St. Mary’s School. Her family moved to New Jersey, where she attended St. Aloysius School and then graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in Pittsfield, Mass. Janet graduated from St. Michael’s School of Nursing in Newark, N.J., and took graduate classes at NIU in DeKalb.

Janet worked as a nurse at Delnor Hospital, for Dr. Fred Haskins, and at Elgin Mental Health before her retirement. Janet’s life was focused on her family and her community.

She volunteered as a school nurse, taught art classes, chaired fundraisers and served as the president of the parent’s association. She also was committed to serving the elderly and the mentally challenged.

Janet was the president of the Fideliter’s Club of Elgin, a charitable organization, and served as the chairman of their 100th anniversary ball. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church and often volunteered to bring food for funeral luncheons.

In her retirement, Janet helped survivors of Hurricane Katrina who were relocated to Illinois. She also enjoyed traveling, reading, gardening, cooking and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Gorecki; her son, Robert L. Gorecki Jr.; her daughter, Meg Gorecki; and two sisters, Paulette Borota and Margaret Mary McGahan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Joey Copia.

Man charged with bike store burglary

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A 27-year-old Batavia man remains in Kane County jail on a $15,000 bond after being charged with burglary after police found him after 2 a.m. Tuesday near Prairie Path Cycles at 160 W. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia.

Frank E. Ryan, of the 300 block of Delia Street in Batavia, has been charged with one count of burglary, a felony.

If convicted, Ryan could face three to seven years in prison.

Batavia police responded at 2:12 a.m. to a burglary alarm at Prairie Path, and an officer found Ryan at the back of the building. Other officers were at the front of the business and

observed damage to the front door and noted that a bicycle display inside the store was in disarray.

Police said a woman’s Trek racing bike, valued at $2,899, was found in bushes near where Ryan was spotted, and it was determined that Frank E. Ryan the bike came from the business.

“We’re not looking at any other suspects at this time,” Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz said.

No other merchandise is missing from the store, he said.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – An East Coast woman who traveled to St. Charles to spend Easter with her parents must return next month for a court appearance on a shoplifting charge, according to police and court reports.

According to a St. Charles police report, Carolyn Jean Ash, 28, of the 200 block of Laird Avenue, Cliffside Park, N.J., stole 11 items totaling $401 from Von Maur on Saturday.

She was charged with

felony retail theft and taken to the Kane County Jail for morning bond call.

Ash reportedly told police that she came home from New Jersey for the weekend to be Carolyn Jean with her parents and to Ash attend church with them.

“The entire time she was in custody, Ash repeatedly asked if she would be released in time for Easter church service tomorrow,”

police reported.

Police did not have an answer for her, according to the report.

The department store, 3810 E. Main St., St. Charles, told police Ash also was suspected of stealing merchandise Thursday, but wasn’t detained at that time, police said.

Police reported that Ash admitted to stealing $92 in merchandise Thursday and agreed to pay restitution on those items.

Ash is expected in court at 9 a.m. May 21 for a status hearing.

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – The Elburn Village Board voted Monday night to adopt its budget for the fiscal year beginning May 1, although board member Jeff Walter voted no, as he did when the vote for the tentative budget came up at the board’s previous meeting.

The budget was in the total amount of $6,154,703. At the

last meeting, Walter said he voted no because of issues he had with the park fund and the Metra fund. He said his vote would not be changing, and he followed through with that when the final budget vote came Monday.

Walter had said he didn’t agree with raising the fees for Metra parking, which will rise to $1.50, up from $1.25, on May 1. That was a highlight of the budget, as the projected reve-

nue of $90,300 for the parking is significantly higher than the 2013-14 estimated revenue of $75,366. Yet Doug Elder, the village’s finance director, had said the village still is showing that expenses in that area are higher than revenue. Walter said there could be better ways to increase revenue, such as doing away with free parking on weekends.

There was no public comment on the budget during

an open hearing before the board’s vote.

Also on Monday night, Police Chief Steve Smith presented details from the Elburn Police Department’s first quarter report. In it, Smith noted that crime numbers were down significantly from the same period last year. He said “the weather had everything to do with that when you consider the number of arrests for intoxicated motor-

ists and traffic accidents.”

For instance, Smith noted that arrests for driving under the influence declined by 75 percent, and traffic crashes were down by 40 percent. He said that total calls for service had increased by 5 percent, but he said most were calls for assistance.

“There were cars in ditches,” he said, adding some were vehicles from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Sugar Grove men land deal with ABC’s sharks

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Kevin Ullery and Stan Krozel know what it’s like to mingle with sharks – metaphorical sharks, that is.

The Sugar Grove residents got a chance in September to pitch their company Fun Time Express to a group of investors on ABC’s Friday primetime program “Shark Tank.”

Watching themselves get a deal with QVC-TV personality Lori Greiner and entrepreneur Kevin O’Leary on the April 11 broadcast was a surreal moment, they said, noting they are fans of the show.

The process to appear on “Shark Tank” began last spring, when Krozel submitted an email to the show without Ullery’s knowledge, the couple of 19 years said.

Although they have other professional pursuits – including a real estate business – they were seeking an investment in Fun Time Express, a provider of trackless train rides in malls.

They pursued that business venture after hitting a

rough period when the real estate market crashed, they said. Their first station opened in 2011 in Rockford’s Cherryvale Mall. Now, they have eight locations in five states – Illinois, Ohio, Florida, Louisiana and Michigan.

The prospect of pitching to the sharks – who also include Mark Cuban, Robert Herjavec and Daymond John – was daunting, they said.

“We were scared,” Ullery said, describing it as “easily the most intense experience of my life.”

But once they were in front of the investors, he said, they soon realized the sharks were just people – “just very, very rich people.”

Ullery said it helped that he and Krozel, a licensed funeral director, have experience in performing and public speaking.

“We put our professional game faces on and went out there and performed,” Ullery said.

They sought $125,000 for 20 percent equity of their company from the sharks, who were quick to dismiss the company as a worthy investment.

“It’s tough to grow this,” said Cuban, the first to say no.

Even O’Leary had initial doubts.

“I like to think big,” he said. “It’s not bad. It’s just small.”

Greiner, however, was willing to make an offer.

“It’s like a feel-good, nice business to have,” she said.

Ullery agreed with her, recalling his initial reaction to Krozel’s proposal for Fun Time Express.

“There was such a level of joy associated with it,” Ullery said on the show.

The offer Krozel and Ullery accepted from Greiner and O’Leary essentially was a $125,000 loan. The sharks will receive 20 percent equity in the company after the debt is repaid.

Krozel and Ullery said the deal still is in the due diligence process.

Ullery said the once-ina-life-time experience is his proudest moment as a couple since he and Krozel started the business together and both applied their skills to make the “Shark Tank” opportunity happen.

Elburn veterinarian files suit against anonymous complaint websites

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ELBURN – An Elburn veterinarian who also sells ragdoll cats has filed a lawsuit against the creator of anonymous websites she contends are trying to hurt her business.

Jennifer Creed, who owns A+ Pet Vet and Dr. Jenn’s Ragdolls, on April 4 filed a lawsuit against John Does 1-5.

In the lawsuit, Creed requested unspecified damages and that the defendants be forced to remove the content in question.

The lawsuit stated she “has suffered and continues to suffer damages including, but not limited to, harmed reputation, embarrassment, mental

anguish, loss of business and emotional distress.”

Creed, who previously used the name Jennifer Woll, has requested a jury trial. The case is set for a hearing in Kane County Court on June 26.

Among other things, the anonymous websites claim that Creed has kept ragdoll kittens in poor conditions.

The suit also claimed that John Does 1-5 began sending emails to other businesses in the pet breeding and veterinary community assailing her character and warning them against doing business with her.

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Getting the job done To the Editor: Years ago, I wasn’t much aware of my dad’s interest in civic affairs, one way or the other, as it pertained to being on the village board or similar positions. My mother accepted it. I let it go at that.

He also worked closely with a man who headed the Glen Ellyn and Wheaton YMCA programs. The man’s name was B.R. Ryall, and I took advantage of the fact that we youngsters could have weekly Y meetings and play at good athletic games together, all of which were supervised by Ryall.

Right then, it turned out that the YMCA had bought some land on the southwest side of Glen Ellyn between Wheaton and Glen Ellyn, and money was being raised to build a swimming pool and headquarters there. My dad aggressively stepped in and saw to it that enough money was raised to get the job done. The pool, etc., was named the B.R. Ryall YMCA, and two villages enjoyed the benefit of the whole program ever since.

Not long after that it was decided that the Chicago-Winfield Tuberculosis Sanitarium was no longer needed. The sanitarium could be better used as a full hospital to treat the many diseases that still prevailed. The need for more hospital facilities was clearly there, so my dad stepped in and headed up a program to redo the Winfield facility and begin building a large general hospital. I remember attending fundraising meetings run by my dad.

He was a remarkable visionary and his efforts – along with others – created Central DuPage Hospital.

He is gone now, but the quality of the hospital he was active in creating is very much a reality.

First National Bank of Facebook could be disrupting force BLOOMBERG NEWS The company that rebranded the word “friend” may soon take up a more ambitious makeover – the word “bank.”

Facebook is on the verge of winning approval from Ireland’s central bank to allow its users to store and exchange money. The company’s plans are not yet clear, but regulators are right to allow more experimentation.

Facebook will reportedly focus on the remittance market, which is growing and ripe for disruption. The World Bank estimates that remittances – funds sent in payment for goods or services, or as gifts – will top $600 billion in 2014, most of it to developing countries and more than triple the amount a decade earlier. That figure is three times greater than

all the world’s aid budgets. But transaction fees, averaging 9 percent, are way too high. Competition from Facebook could bring those fees down quickly.

Facebook is hardly alone in its ambitions; Wal-Mart Stores, the world’s largest retailer, introduced last week a service that will allow the unbanked to transfer money among its 4,000 U.S. stores.

It remains to be seen whether Facebook’s new service will allow money to move across borders as easily and instantaneously as cat videos and family photos. It probably will be less expensive than existing services – assuming Facebook takes advantage of its size and low overhead to charge less than the hefty fees traditional banks’ money-transfer services now extract. (Wal-Mart says it will charge half what some competitors now do.)

As regulators consider these new models, they should be flexible. Rules issued by the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act are a good example.

Companies that send remittances from the United States must disclose the exchange rate that will be applied, the fees to be collected in the U.S. and overseas, and the pre-tax amount that will actually be delivered.

The U.S.’s money-laundering regulations are another story. Last year, European banks closed the accounts of numerous institutions in developing countries that allegedly lacked proper money-laundering safeguards for remittances from migrant workers. The pressure to crack down came from the U.S. Perhaps U.S. regulators should rethink their

approach. Why not apply the rules in proportion to the risk involved? They could, for example, allow some leeway for as much as, say, $250 in remittances when transferred through Facebook or a similar secure network.

It almost goes without saying that the transformation of the banking industry is already well under way.

Hundreds of millions of people worldwide use mobile applications to send and receive money.

For the 2.5 billion people in emerging markets with no access to a bank, however, Facebook’s entry into the market could do more than make it cheaper to send earnings back home. If it allows them to establish credit, obtain loans, meet payrolls, pay household bills and invest, the bank of Facebook could find itself with a lot of friend requests.

ST. CHARLES – It was shaping up to be a night to forget for Sophie Pohl and the St. Charles North girls soccer team.

Crosstown rival St. Charles East outplayed North much of the game Tuesday, and Pohl, one of North’s top scoring options, was having an especially maddening time trying to keep the ball at her feet.

“The ball, it would hit me in bad places, my touches were off,” Pohl said. “It wasn’t clicking for me. Offensively, we weren’t connecting, so it was just frustrating. Toward the end I think we were starting to take more advantage of opportunities, but it just took awhile.”

Pohl and North had just enough time to make amends.

The Toledo recruit is reputed for her rocket shot, but she opted for finesse in chipping a mid-range shot beyond the reach of Saints goalkeeper Kendra Sheehan with 3:09 to play in the match, enabling the host North Stars to tie the Saints, 1-1.

“With her shot, that’s one thing for her that’s always consistent, is that shot,” North coach Ruth Vostal said. “It worked out. A couple of times

left the match early in the second half. Stitz hobbled off with an apparent ankle injury, having landed awkwardly in traffic after pursuing a high ball in the box.

“I’m sure she’ll be fine. It just wasn’t a play that I was happy to see,” Vostal said.

North (8-2-1, 3-0-1 UEC River) turned to sophomore Alexa Lievrouw in goal the rest of the match, although with the North Stars channeling a sense of urgency in the late stages, the Saints were unable to force the sophomore into many challenging spots.

For most of the night, however, East appeared poised to turn the tables on North, which has enjoyed the upper-hand in the crosstown rivalry on most occasions in recent years.

“We were first to every ball,” Saints senior midfielder Amanda Hilton said. “We played our hearts out. Hey, it’s not a loss, so we’re not going to hang our heads. We’re going to move forward.”

Jennison thought Tuesday’s performance bodes well for the Saints.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the girls,” Jennison said. “I thought that was an absolutely fantastic play. I thought we were excellent. If we play like that every game, it’s going to be a good finish to the season.”

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Before the start of an important threegame Upstate Eight Conference series against Batavia, the St. Charles East baseball team collectively hit the reset button.

East came into the series against the Bulldogs having dropped three in a row and was facing a Batavia team playing as well as anyone in the Tri-Cities.

East had to sweat out a tense seventh-inning Batavia rally Tuesday but held on to take game one of the series, 3-1.

“We’ve been very close to having a perfect game, and today we got it,” East coach Len Asquini said. “We’ve been missing something here or there in all of our losses, but today we got it and it was a big time to get it.”

“It,” turned out to be a couple of timely hits in the early going for East (8-5, 4-3 UEC River) before turning to its pitching to hold on for the win.

East pitcher Adam Eck cruised through the first six innings, facing one over the minimum after the first inning, before running into trouble in the seventh. Eck fanned Kyle Niemiec to start the seventh but then walked Dino Simoncelli and allowed an opposite-field single to Andrew Siegler.

Reagan McReynolds looked to hit Eck’s next pitch off the plate but it was called foul instead. The next Eck offering hit McReynolds in the back to load the bases.

Asquini called on reliever Mick Vyzral to finish the job.

The junior brandished a nasty curveball, striking out Steven Busby before getting Laren Eustace to ground out to second to end the game.

“We were trying hard not to see that guy, especially in that situation,” Asquini said of Eustace, an Indiana recruit.

“It happened, we went at it and Mick got the best of him today.

Hopefully we can get that tomorrow as well.”

prove to 2-0 on the year. The only blemish came on a Jeremy Schoessling RBI groundout in the third that scored Eustace, who tripled to lead off the inning. After that, Eck allowed just a Niemiec single before running into trouble in the seventh.

“I was keeping the curveball low and spotting my fastball inside and outside,” Eck said. “I knew that [the top of the Batavia order] liked to chase curveballs in the dirt. I just tried to keep it outside, especially against Eustace.”

Batavia starter Evan Acosta nearly matched Eck, permitting just an earned run in six innings of work. East scored an unearned run in

the second on a passed ball to score its first run before taking a 2-1 lead in the fourth on an RBI single from Alex Abate.

The hit turned out to be the game-winner.

“Acosta pitched really well.

That passed ball looked like the goal that [St. Louis Blues goalie Ryan Miller] gave up last night,” Batavia coach Matt Holm said. “Against a good, solid coached program like Len’s always going to have, you can’t make mistakes. In a series like this, whoever makes the most mistakes isn’t going to win.”

Acosta flirted with danger in the fifth and sixth but pitched out of trouble in both cases. In the fifth, Adam Rojas

led off the inning with a single before Acosta threw just wide of first on Mike Settle’s bunt back to the mound. After both runners were sacrificed up a base by Reid Olson, Acosta struck out Brannon Barry before getting Ben Smith to line out to right to end the inning.

In the sixth, Austin Regelbrugge singled to left to lead off the inning but was stranded at second as Acosta got a weak groundout and a flare to right.

East added an insurance run in the seventh off reliever Nick Rogalski on an infield single from Smith, scoring Olson, who reached on a throwing error.

“Adam Eck was super on the mound today. He was really tough,” Asquini said. “Mick came in in a tough situation and kept his composure to get out their best hitter with the bases loaded. I’m really happy for the kids, as we had some big at-bats and some timely hits.”

Smith and Regelbrugge each had a pair of hits for East.

Eustace finished 2 for 4 with a triple and a run scored for Batavia. Acosta took the loss for the Bulldogs, working six innings, permitting just one earned run on six hits while striking out seven.

The only inning North did not score a run in was the fourth, when relief pitcher Mitch Mergus retired the side in order. Mergus, a recent varsity call-up, replaced starting pitcher Max Novak in the third inning. North added three runs in the third, one in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Genke was impressed with his team’s offense. The North Stars notched 17 hits. Nick Drawant singled four times while Kyle Khoury went 3 for 5 with two doubles and a single.

“I’m really proud of the way we hit the ball today. We exploded offensively,” Genke said. “We certainly have that potential. It was nice to see it happen today. It’s the best we have hit the ball all year. It’s great because they are really getting some confidence, and that is going to takes us a long way.”

“Defensively, it was a little sloppy, but we picked it up when we needed it,” Khoury said. “We got hits when we needed them, so that helped a lot.”

Farry, who was credited with the win, pitched five innings.

“I thought Frankie pitched well,” Genke said. “He had some hard luck with some of the ground balls.”

The two teams meet again today at Geneva in the middle game of the three-game series.

“I told the team this one you erase. Forget about it,” Hahn said. “The score will be 0-0 when we show up [today].”

ST. CHARLES – Tuesday’s game between St. Charles North and Geneva was difficult for even the most ardent baseball fan to watch.

North beat Geneva, 18-8, in six innings in a mistake-filled contest. The teams combined 16 errors in an Upstate Eight River Conference River game.

North Stars third baseman Jordan Bergren ended the twohour, 20-minute contest in the bottom of the sixth when he singled home John LeGare.

The sophomore scored North’s 18th run, giving it a 10-run lead needed to end the game on the mercy rule.

“I think this was the ugliest high school baseball game I’ve been around ever. I mean, as a player and as a coach,” Geneva coach Matt Hahn said. “I think there were 20 errors in the game or close to it. They took advantage more than we did.”

“It wasn’t pretty, that’s for sure,” North coach Todd Genke said. “I kind of felt like it was Wrigley Field out there where no lead was safe. We struggled a little bit defensively. We made just enough plays to keep Geneva at bay because they are dangerous offensively.”

Geneva (9-3, 5-2 UEC River) took an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning off North starting pitcher Frankie Farry. Farry hit Geneva leadoff batter Jason Croci with the third pitch of the game.

Croci scored when Nick Derr (2 for 3) doubled to right field.

Ben Chally (3 for 3) plated Derr with a single to left.

The North Stars regained the lead in their half of the inning on a bases-loaded triple

by LeGare.

GENEVA – Following the usual protocol of Ozzie’s Reading Club matinees, thousands of schoolchildren dispersed before the Cougars recorded the final out against Beloit on Tuesday afternoon.

The kiddos missed Zack Godley’s baffling cutter that punctuated a 5-4 victory as well as an accompanying lesson in compromise.

Summoned with two on and two out after Jose Arias allowed a pair of runs to open the ninth inning, Godley conferred with catcher Will Remillard before a 3-2 delivery to Snappers right fielder Tyler Marincov.

Although he had struggled to command the pitch in falling behind Marincov, 3-0, Godley was thinking inside fastball.

Remillard lobbied for the cutter and won, much like the Cougars, who snapped a three-game skid.

“A little bit more urgency in it, but you try and stay as calm as you can going into a situation like that,” Godley said. “Did all right.”

Derr keeps stinging ’em Geneva sophomore shortstop Nick Derr generates buzz whenever he steps into the batter’s box by virtue of his commitment to Florida State.

It always occurs to him, however, that he’s capable of creating more chatter.

Derr continued a torrid start that has matched the Vikings’ – 9-2 entering Tuesday – by going 2 for 3 with a home run in Monday’s Upstate Eight Conference crossover win against visiting Bartlett.

He smacked three homers in a nonconference home win against Conant on April 13.

“I worked very hard in the offseason to get bigger and stronger and I think by far it’s paid off,” Derr said. “It’s just a lot of hard work in the offseason. I’m glad to see it’s paying off.”

St. Francis extended Aurora Central Catholic’s home losing streak to two with Thursday’s 8-3 victory.

One day earlier, IC Catholic Prep ended the Chargers’ 18-game home winning streak by taking a 4-2 game.

The Knights and Spartans became the first group of visitors to win at ACC since Oswego on March 30, 2013.

“Unbelievable,” St. Francis coach Rich Janor said. “Man, that’s wild. Real wild.”

Will Purdom paced the Spartans’ attack with two hits and three RBIs, helping St. Francis recover from a frustrating April 15.

Michigan State-bound Marmion lefty Alex Troop stifled the host Spartans in a one-hit shutout.

“It was a good bounce-back game,” Janor said. “We started a little slow and kind of put the gas pedal down late in Troop changes it up the game. It was nice to see the bats Troop adjusted to the wind conditions get going.” at St. Francis and used his changeup

Most times, Troop, a Batavia resident, gets a sense during pregame warmups in the bullpen. Other times, it might take an inning or two to find the pulse.

“Seven-inning shutout, you really can’t ask for much more than that,” Rakow said. “He really did a great job.”

Kaneland keeps rolling. The Knights reeled off their eighth straight win – and fourth straight in Northern Illinois Big 12 East play – on Monday.

Timely offense again backed strong pitching, as Anthony Holubecki scattered two runs and three hits in five innings before Nick Stahl’s two innings of scoreless relief.

Saints ready for road tests St. Charles East will play on the road in two out of three games in its next two conference series. The Saints face Batavia this week and Geneva next week, with the Vikings hosting a May 3 doubleheader. The schedule puts an added premium on winning at home.

Do you feel fully acclimated to your new team by this stage of the season?

Yeah, definitely. We’re really close outside of softball so I think it helps because we bond really well with the whole team.

What did you consider your go-to pitch [Saturday], and in general?

My drop-ball definitely has been working really well for me and that’s what’s been creating the ground balls, so that’s my go-to.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you with some difficult homework, who would it be and why?

Lexi Roach, because I think she would make me calm down and just figure it out, and she’s really smart, too.

She’s always smiling and she’s always happy, too, so she’d definitely be the one I’d pick.

Morrow, a Burlington Central transfer, delivered on the buzz in Game 1 of a doubleheader against host Geneva on Saturday, firing a no-hitter.

Morrow, who also threw a no-hitter as a freshman at Central, is the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week.

Give Jarmusch another chance with ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now It’s been a long while since I’ve really, really enjoyed a Jim Jarmusch film.

With exceptions of brilliant moments in the droll “Broken Flowers” and the grim “Dead Man,” the oddly goofy “Down by Law” has been my favorite. But “Only Lovers Left Alive,” best described as a contemporary vampire film, has pushed “Down by Law” into second place.

If you’ve tried Jarmusch before, and liked him, you’ll realize upon seeing this one that it’s his most assured and accessible film. If you’ve tried him and walked out vowing never to see another by him, it’s time to give him another chance.

First and foremost, this is a love story about Adam, an old-school underground musician (he records on a reel to reel machine) who holes up in a crammed, rundown apartment in Detroit, and his wife, Eve, who spends a leisurely and rather enigmatic existence in faraway Tangiers.

Adam has given up performing live, and shies away from the world, especially from the obsessive music fans who keep searching for him. But he does have Ian, a right hand man of sorts, who gets supplies for him, and regularly finds and drops off rare guitars at the apartment (a blue sparkly Hagstrom and a red Gretsch are the ones I was drooling over). Eve wanders the streets and back alleys of Tangiers, regularly meeting up with her old friend Marlowe at a quiet café.

Since there’s not a whole lot of storytelling going on here, the biggest and best thing the film has going for it is the alluring mood that’s set at the start, and that Jarmusch maintains almost for its entirety. Yet keeping right up with that mood to make the film so memorable is the cast Jarmusch has assembled. Tilda Swinton adds her usual other-worldly presence to Eve, and Tom Hiddleston (the evil Loki in the Thor films), as Adam, gives us the best reclusive rocker since Todd Haynes filled a film with them in “Velvet Goldmine.”

For the record, Adam and Eve are vampires, and if vampires had souls, they would be soul mates. It’s never made clear how old they are, how long they’ve been a couple (though it’s mentioned they were married in 1868), or how long they’ve been living apart, but they are always at the center of the film, and circumstances soon bring them back together again, sharing glasses of fine, unspoiled blood that’s purchased, under shady circumstances, from a local hospital.

The characters who rotate closely around them easily fit right in with the film’s flow. Anton Yelchin is the helpful but hapless Ian, an updated nod to Count Dracula’s assistant Renfield; John Hurt is the suave and secretive Marlowe; and Jeffrey Wright is the crooked cash-for-blood doctor. I mentioned earlier that Jarmusch maintains the film’s mood for “almost” its entirety.

That’s because he breaks it in what, as I was watching the film, was a jarring, annoying manner, with the introduction of Eve’s estranged little sister, Ava (played with a free-spirited brightness no one else exudes by Mia Wasikowski). The character even disrupts the minimal storyline, not just the mood. It

wasn’t until the day after I saw the film that I realized what a darkly comic gem the character was, and how unconventionally vibrant she played it.

As a longtime fan of vampire stories, and someone who was terribly disillusioned by what was presented in the “Twilight” series, I was extremely pleased with the take given to the genre here. These are, with the exception of Ava, elegant and sophisticated creatures. Their existence is not a violent one. They only want to be left alone and allowed to keep on keeping on. Their biggest problem is not Ava, but the fact that the “good stuff” they subsist on, as opposed to the blood that’s been “contaminated” by the “zombies” – the rest of us – who make up our society – is in short supply. That’s where the film’s main drama lies. Jarmusch’s triumph is that he makes us care about these characters, all the while placing us in their world and, for a couple of hours, never letting us think about ours.

Jeanne Phillips ing his anger at himself onto his son. He should have used birth control and he knows it. It’s not fair, but Wayne does not appear to be the most mature of 23-year-olds.

Rather than blame yourself for the fact that he wants no involvement, consider that children usually model themselves after their same-gender parent. Because your husband was so uninvolved with Wayne, it is possible that Wayne has no idea of what a father’s role ought to be. A parenting class could fix this – if your son is willing to take one.

Until then, continue to be the supportive and loving grandparents your grandson needs.

During heart attack, restoring blood flow is critical Dear Doctor K: My husband recently had a heart attack.

Fortunately, he’s doing well. But I’d like to understand better what happens to the heart during a heart attack.

Dear Reader: The heart is a special kind of muscle that keeps blood circulating throughout your body. Your husband’s heart doesn’t just pump blood to the rest of his body; it also pumps blood to itself – it needs that blood to survive. Your husband’s heart attack occurred when a blood clot blocked a coronary artery – an artery that provides blood to his heart muscle. This prevented the artery from delivering oxygen-rich blood to a specific part of his heart’s muscular wall.

Usually, heart attacks cause pain and make the heart pump less efficiently. With minor heart attacks, heart function may not be impaired. With more serious heart attacks, heart failure or sudden death can follow.

Heart failure is a condition in which the heart is still pumping.

However, it is pumping so weakly that blood is not circulating adequately. Not enough fresh, oxygen-rich blood is getting to the tissues of the body. Also, not enough blood is returning to the heart.

Sudden death is usually caused by a dangerous heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation.

Instead of working like a pump, the heart muscle just quivers. It doesn’t pump blood at all, leading to death. Fortunately, there are treatments that can restore a regular heart rhythm – and life.

During the early stages of a heart attack, heart cells are dying rapidly from a lack of oxygen. At this point, the primary goal is to unblock the artery and quickly restore blood flow to the injured heart muscle to limit permanent damage. This is called reperfusion therapy. The faster blood flow is restored to the heart, the greater the chances of surviving and recovering.

Reperfusion is often done mechanically. The doctor threads a catheter carrying a small deflated balloon through a large blood vessel and past the blockage. He or she inflates the balloon to crush the clot and plaque. Most balloon

catheters also have a wire mesh, called a stent, over the balloon.

After the balloon is inflated, the stent remains in place to keep the artery open.

Doctors also often give the patient various medications. These help prevent further blood clotting in the coronary arteries and minimize the heart’s oxygen needs.

Bed rest immediately following a heart attack also helps reduce the heart’s oxygen needs.

Dr. Wallace: I’m responding to the parents of the 16-year-old girl who was constantly the butt of jokes about her extra-long nose.

My heart goes out to this girl because her parents would not even consider plastic surgery.

I was very glad that you encouraged the parents to see if plastic surgery could improve her appearance and her self-esteem. I want to share my experience with both this girl and her parents.

I had a similar problem as a fifth-grader and was routinely taunted by these immature classmates and others. My parents were no help at all because they told me to just smile. That way, the kids wouldn’t get the reaction they wanted and the problem would go away. Well, smiling didn’t work, and by the time I got to junior high, the verbal abuse included remarks that were very hurtful.

When I went to high school, the hurtful remarks stopped, but I became a bookworm and made a few friends. I was rewarded with excellent grades and graduated with honors. Because of my singing ability, I was voted the most talented senior in my graduation class.

Right after graduation, I went to a doctor to find out about the procedure to shorten my nose and was really surprised that the cost was less than I thought.

My grandmother said she would lend me the money, so I took her up on her generosity and got the “nose job.” When it was all over and I looked in the mirror, I no longer saw the dateless ugly duckling, but a beautiful swan.

I am now married to a wonderful handsome husband and have two

Dear Abby: My 23-year-old son, “Wayne,” who is single, has a 3-year-old son. We didn’t learn about the child until he was more than a year old, when Wayne was asked to take a paternity test.

Luckily, we have been able to form a good relationship with our grandson’s mother and see him often. However, our son has shown no interest. He pays child support, but has little interaction.

Wayne is an only child. I love him, but I never wanted another one. I was never comfortable around or interested in young children except for my own son. Could he have gotten this from me?

Wayne says he feels resentment and doesn’t want to be around this child. I have tried to explain that he’ll regret it in years to come, but he won’t listen.

My husband is appalled that our son would act this way, but he seems to forget that I was the one who did everything with Wayne. For example, when you are in a contract that depends solely on a finesse. But much more often, your choices are the determining factor.

In today’s deal, West had two choices on the first round of the auction: to make a takeout double or to overcall one no-trump.

Here, the double would have worked much better, because it would not have placed all of the missing honors in his hand. But West preferred one no-trump because it defined his hand strength much more accurately than double.

Against four hearts, West led the diamond queen. How did South plan the play?

North’s decision to jump to three hearts worked well. Anything less and his side probably would not have reached game.

Declarer was faced with four potential losers: one heart and three clubs. And since only 16 points were missing, West was marked with the heart king and club ace. South saw that his only chance was an endplay.

After taking the first trick, he cashed his heart ace, relieved to see East follow suit. Then declarer cashed his other top diamond and dummy’s top spades, ruffed the spade five in his hand, and exited a trump.

West won with his king, but had no riposte. If he had shifted to clubs, South would have scored his king. But when West led the diamond jack, declarer discarded a club from the board and ruffed in his hand. He then claimed, conceding two club tricks.

Elburn Lions looking for books KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – During her recent term as president of the Elburn Lions Club, Pam Hall helped launch the club’s Lions for Literacy program.

With Lions Club member Joe Kryszak serving as the program chairman, it has enjoyed success, with the club working to collect books and distribute them to needy youths in the area.

As part of that effort, the Lions will stage book collection events, during which residents are encouraged to drop off “gently used” books that can be given to those in need.

Such an event is coming up, with a book drive set from 4 to 8 p.m. May 2 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 3 at Lions Park, 500 Filmore St., Elburn.

The books should be appropriate for those ages 1 to 18 years old.

“These books are important to these kids,” Kryszak said, who added that librarians have told them “a used book or a gently used book is just as good as a new book.”

This will be the Elburn Lions’ second such book collection. Kryszak said in the previous collection, organizers asked members to drop off books.

Literacy programs help fulfill the mission of Lions Club International, which also seeks to help those who are visually impaired.

The Elburn Lions Club has embraced the cause, Hall said, and she added that Kryszak “has been instrumental, making sure everybody is involved and active.”

The Elburn Lions work to get anonymous lists of youths who are in need of books, working with churches, as well as groups such as the Maple Park Family Fund and the Sugar Grove-based Between Friends Food Pantry.

Lions officials also seek help, guidance and expertise from local librarians and officials in the Kaneland School District.

Elburn Lions send $10K donation to Gifford tornado recovery

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – When Chris Halsey starting hearing of reports about the devastation caused in the state by tornadoes that struck in November, the Elburn Lions Club member said he was puzzled that the town of Gifford received such little publicity.

“You heard about Diamond, Coal City and, of course, Washington,” Halsey said.

Halsey traveled to Gifford, located in central Illinois, north of Champaign and east of Rantoul. Halsey, the vice governor of Lions

Club District 1-J, took some photos and told Elburn Lions Club members of the damage he saw. One photo in particular, he said, showed what was left of a house that was “right where the tornado came in.”

After he returned, he looked to raise $10,000. He said the club collected $5,900 from local businesses and Elburn residents, and the club itself put in $4,100. The club also donated a load of deodorant.

The money went to the Gifford tornado relief fund, and Halsey worked with the Gifford Lions Club. He said there are 50 to 60 members in that organization.

Education in Action 4th Grade SOAR Assembly On Thursday, April 10, 2014, the fourth graders at Kaneland John Shields participated in a wonderful presentation to support their structures of life science curriculum. The presentation by SOAR, Save Our American Raptors, focused on birds of prey and included live owls for the students to meet. SOAR is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the welfare of our native birds of prey.

Bernadette Richter, licensed master falconer, educated students about the importance of raptors and their habitat, while highlighting various adaptations of species such as examples of camouflage and talons used for hunting prey. Students learned the important role raptors play in ecosystems and how they fit into the food chain. Mrs. Richter then shared three owls that she has rehabilitated and adopted. The owls ranged in size from six ounces to four pounds, and included a Screech owl, a Barred owl, and a Great Horned owl. The assembly, which was funded by the Kaneland John Shields PTO, was highly engaging and greatly enjoyed by the fourth graders.

Third graders from John Stewart Elementary were honored at Recognition Morning last Thursday. Recognition Morning has been a long-standing tradition at John Stewart and is a time for students and their families to share in their quarterly achievements with the school. The third grade teachers, who host the event, chose students to receive awards in three different categories: Most Improved, Outstanding Academic Achievement, and Good Character. Parents of the students who are selected for awards are invited to join this well-attended event prior to the school day.

Recognition morning awards give the teacher and students an opportunity to set quarterly goals.

Throughout the quarter, students are encouraged to work toward the award that they would like to earn. The photo shows recipients from Mrs. Weigt’s third grade class.
