‘Shrek’ time nears at Kaneland If you go

Al Lagattolla MAPLE PARK – Kaneland High School senior Rachel Miller enjoys the “Shrek” movies. She said she would get the movie soundtracks so she could sing along.

But now, Miller is involved with a “Shrek” production she said is even better than the films. She will perform as Fiona this weekend in Kaneland’s presentation of “Shrek – the Musical.”

“I definitely like it better than the movie,” she said, adding those familiar with the film should “come to the musical. There is so much more depth to it.”

Christina Staker, said the concept worked well for the fall play. She said the spring musical thus far has been a bigger challenge. For instance, those in both casts must learn the same dances, the same music and the same lines, and she said since there are time limitations, it has been difficult. But she said it is a good way to get more people involved, and she probably would continue it in the future.

Staker said the part of Shrek also was a challenge to cast.

“You think of a large, ogre-like boy,” she said. “And

we didn’t have anyone like that.”

She said Ben Mitchinson, who will play Shrek, “might not visibly look the part, but once he’s in costume, he will. … He has a really strong presence on stage.”

Mitchinson, a junior, said he had auditioned for the role of Lord Farquaad. He said he’ll be making his best attempt at Shrek’s Scottish accent and preparing to wear the costume that goes with the role. He called it the biggest part he’s ever been cast to play, and he is excited.

“It is really eye-opening,” he said, adding “there’s a

lot more to do. There are a lot more intimate moments as an actor. … There’s a lot more memorization and hard work.”

Miller said she is happy to play Fiona.

“She’s not your typical princess, which is what I like,” she said. “I’m not your typical girly girl.”

The role of Donkey will be played by Nicole DiSandro. James Tockstein plays Farquaad.

Among the understudies, Johnny Heuman plays Shrek, Amy Croft plays Donkey, Sabrina Massa will be Fiona and Jarod Kovach is Farquaad.

Blue Bell expands ice cream recall KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Blue Bell Ice Cream is recalling all of its products – ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet and frozen snacks – because of a possible listeria monocytogene contamination, the Kane County Health Department announced in a release Tuesday.

Eight illnesses have been reported in connection to Blue Bell products, but the health department indicated none were reported in Illinois.

Five patients were treated in Kansas, and three were treated in Texas after testing positive for listeria monocytogenes, according to the health department.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the release.

Healthy individuals may suffer short-term symptoms, such as high fever, severe

headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, the release states. It notes that among pregnant women, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.

The recall is an expansion of a previous recall. The decision to expand the recall reportedly was prompted by findings from an enhanced sampling program initiated

by Blue Bell.

Sampling revealed half-gallons of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream produced March 17 and March 27 con-

tained the bacteria, according to the release. The release states this means Blue Bell has had several positive tests for listeria in different places and plants.

Some of Blue Bell’s facilities will remain closed as the Texas-based company continues to investigate, according to the release. It states Blue Bell expects to resume distribution soon on a limited basis once it is confident in the safety of its product.

Residents, taxing bodies testify against TIF plan

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A standing-room-only crowd of more than 60 people packed a public hearing Tuesday at the Sugar Grove Village Hall to vent their opposition to a proposed tax increment finance district.

Village officials propose a 634-acre TIF district to foster industrial redevelopment of an area near the Aurora Municipal Airport for

industrial use.

A tax increment finance district is a development tool that uses new property or sales tax revenue generated from growth is set aside to pay for public improvements – instead of going to local taxing bodies.

TIFs expire after 23 years and taxing bodies then receive the full tax value of the redevelopment area.

Village Trustee Laura Andersen said the village needs to talk more with other local governments about the prevailing wage act before making a decision.

“We need to be as synergistic as possible,” she said.

CAMPTON HILLS – Trustees on Tuesday decided they want more discussion on whether the village should do away with its prevailing wage act.

They decided to table further discussion of the issue until their May 19 meeting.

The item came up as part of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s “Turnaround Agenda – Local Government Empowerment and Reform” related to reforms

and unfunded mandates.

During the meeting, members of several unions in the area voiced their opposition to the idea of doing away with the prevailing wage act.

Virgil Township Highway Commissioner Larry Peterson also spoke against the idea.

“The nonunion people need to wake up,” Peterson said, in addressing village officials. “They will get hurt just like union members. It’s not right.”

Village Trustee Mike Millette also said he was against the idea.

“I don’t think there really is any benefit to changing the prevailing wage act,” Millette said. “I can’t imag-

THE PUSH FOR A SKATE PARK Elburn teens launching effort

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Seeking signatures on a petition, a group of teenagers knocked on doors in neighborhoods throughout Elburn. The teens’ mission – bring a skate park to the village or someplace in the Kaneland area.

Alex Gutierrez, Jacob Anderson, Justin Honshul and Juan Guzman – all students at Kaneland Harter Middle School – said their effort was inspired by an instructor at the school. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help create a park that would cater to those on skates, skateboards and also, perhaps, bikes.

The teens said they have been chased away from a few skating places, and the GoFundMe page states “there isn’t really anywhere to skate.” A similar effort was made years ago, but it never came to fruition. And while the skaters say they understand the attempt could take time and might be difficult, there is reason to believe it could happen. Skate parks exist in Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles.

The GoFundMe page – www.gofundme.com/elburnil – seeks $75,000 to help fund what the skaters called “a dream, all of our dreams.”

Village leaders in Elburn and Sugar Grove said they hope the effort is successful, but it would be unlikely the villages could spend any money on it.

Elburn Village President Dave Anderson said the question is finance.

“That’s always been the issue,” he said. “And then, a place to have it.”

He said the village “didn’t have the money at that time, and with what Gov. Bruce Rauner is proposing [local leaders have balked at proposed cuts in the state budget], I don’t think we’ll have money this time.”

Successful efforts in the Tri-Cities have been done with the help of park districts. In Geneva, parks officials stated that the park is a joint venture between the park district, the city of Geneva and Geneva Township.

It was built in the early 2000s and is open to skateboarders and BMX and bike riders.

By 2000, a group had done a petition, and the parks board explored the issue. The skate park plan was put into a fiveyear capital plan. It was dedicated in the summer of 2002.

Eby said the cost was $64,900 for the skate park

and $108,000 for the slab and fencing work. He said when he started inviting people to community meetings, as many as 30 people showed up.

He said another process started with a bike park, which sits next to the skate park.

“Both are still pretty darn popular,” Eby said.

The options are limited in the Kaneland area. Elburn does not have a park district,

and Sugar Grove’s park district is much smaller than those in Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles. Banik said he understands it could be difficult, but he talked to some of the kids in his civics course, and they understand the process will take time.

“I’ve already warned them, to really get this done, it will be a process,” he said, adding it is “not just going to be that you turn in your petition and they do it.”

Banik said there are good reasons for people in the villages to want a skate park.

Safety can be an issue. An Elburn girl died in 2013 after colliding with a car while inline skating. A few months after that incident, another Elburn girl was hurt while skateboarding.

“It’s safer for the kids and safer for the town,” Banik said. “It’s better than sitting inside and playing video games. They have very good ideas, it’s just a matter of getting all of the details.”

The previous effort had a Facebook page, titled “Elburn Public Skatepark Movement.”

Gutierrez, an eighth-grader at Harter, said he and his friends are aware there have been other attempts at a skatepark. He said the teens lately have been skating in the parking lot behind the American Legion in downtown Elburn. He and his friends said they have been other places in town, mostly parking lots, but “a lot of the people, they would get mad.”

Ideally, he said, they would like a skate park in the area of the park that sits near the Town and Country Public Library. Banik said it would be good for the kids to have their own area. He said when he was younger, he would look for places to skate and he knows that can be dangerous.

“The businesses and adults realize that, and they don’t want them to be there,” Banik said. “But where else are they going to go?”

Trustee Bob Bohler has terminal cancer

Village Trustee Bob Bohler, who has served on the board since 1997, has

tendered his resignation from the board pending a replacement because he is terminally ill with cancer.

“He has done a great job,” Village President Sean Michels said. “He really has been committed to the residents of the village.”

The seat will be up for election in 2017. Bohler in

2013 was re-elected to his fifth term.

Those who apply for the post must be registered voters and have had resided in the village for at least one year (there is a residency exception for those in active military duty). Candidates must not have been convicted of a felony, bribery or perjury, nor be in arrears in the payment of a tax or other indebtedness to the village.

Candidates are asked to submit a board member interest form, which can be found on the village’s website, www.sugar-grove.il.us.

The form and additional information on the duties of a board member and statutory requirements can be obtained in person at the Sugar Grove Municipal Center, 10 S. Municipal Drive, Sugar Grove.

All seats on the board

are at-large seats, meaning trustees represent the entire village rather than a specific area.

Michels will make the appointment with the advice and consent of the board.

Michels said he would like the appointment to be made by the May 19 meeting, and that the person would be sworn in at the meeting or the board’s first meeting in June.

SUGAR GROVE – For Bill Roeder, volunteering isn’t just a post-retirement activity – it’s a way of paying back the hospital that he said saved his grandson’s life.

C o r e y Adam, 19, was driving on Galena Boulevard on April 6, 2013, toward Bill Roeder Sugar Grove, when his attempt to pass a car ended in a rollover crash. Adam’s injuries were so severe that first responders initially pronounced him dead, but of-

ficials from the Aurora Fire Department revived him, Roeder, a Sugar Grove resident, wrote in a news release.

No one else was injured in the crash, Roeder said in a phone interview Monday.

Adam was taken to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, where his grandfather, Roeder, had started volunteering a few years before.

Roeder, 80, said Adam lost his spleen but otherwise recovered completely. He was able to go home after eight days in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

“He’s a lucky kid,” Roeder said.

Roeder wanted to return the favor to the hospital that did so much for his grandson

“I escort patients back to their rooms, work with registration, assist family members, but most importantly I [try] to help the patients relax when they come in,” Roeder wrote in the news release.

Roeder said in the interview that he makes jokes with the patients, such as asking them if they would like a poolside room. On Thursdays, Roeder delivers meals to the community as part of Mercy’s “Meals on Wheels” program.

Roeder wrote he enjoys lifting the spirits of patients, staff and community members. He retired nearly 20 years ago as an insurance agent for Northwestern Mutual in Milwaukee.

GENEVA – County leaders soon should know what kind of economic power a proposed Settler’s Hill cross-country course might bring.

The Kane County Board last November approved a contract for a feasibility study and economic impact analysis for the proposed improvements at the former landfill.

Staff members have said the study should show how a cross-country course could affect other businesses in the area, such as gas stations and hotels, and whether high school and collegiate events would be viable for the site.

Staff expected the final report would take about 11 weeks with the possibility that some findings could be available after six to eight weeks.

At the County Development Committee meeting Tuesday, board member T.R. Smith, R-Maple Park, noted the study was taking “quite some time.”

Committee Chairman Kurt Kojzarek assured his colleagues the wait wouldn’t be for much longer.

“It is coming soon,” he said, noting the initial findings didn’t include all the variables the county sought.

Ken Anderson, director of the county’s division of environmental and water resources, said the redraft is expected to be available by the end of the week. Meanwhile, work continues to improve Settler’s Hill Golf Course.

The committee recommended approval of an amendment to the agreement between the county and the Kane County Forest Preserve District to fund improvements at the golf course with $300,000 from the landfill fund.

County Board member Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, said the funds, which were generated when the landfill was active, will go toward better drainage and a golf course design that makes more sense.

State preservation agency puts brakes on 6th Street School demolition

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Although it does not have the power to stop demolition of the former Sixth Street School building in Geneva, the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency sent a letter telling county architects Cordogan Clark and Associates to consider alternatives.

“With that letter ... the agency is saying, ‘It is an historic building. Destroying it would be a bad thing,’ ” said

Chris Wills, spokesman for the state preservation agency.

Wills said the agency does not have the power to stop the demolition of the former school at 210 S. Sixth St., which was built in 1924 and 1925.

“But before demolition can happen, under law, some steps have to be followed,” Wills said. “They have to get our input – if there are other ways the building could be saved instead of demolished – and respond to our recommendations.”

The county’s plan is to sell the building to the Geneva Public Library District as a site for a new library. The contract calls for the building to be demolished – but the April 15 letter from cultural resources manager David Halpin states, “In our opinion, the Sixth Street School is eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.”

The school is eligible because of its long association with and influence on the community and because it is a good example of early 20th century school design, according to Halpin’s letter.

“The proposal to demolish the school constitutes an ad-

verse effect as defined” in the state’s historic preservation law, according to the letter.

The letter also states several Geneva citizens contacted the agency “to express their opinion that the building should be saved and repurposed. No demolition should take place prior to the resolution of this historic property.”

Halpin’s letter states the building could be “mothballed,” incorporated into a proposed development or sold.

The building currently houses the Kane County Regional Office of Education, which will be moved, officials said.

Kane County officials relied on a report by Cordogan Clark

and Associates that detailed the building’s problems and the $3.7 million cost to bring it up to code. At Kane County Chairman Chris Lauzen’s request, Geneva aldermen last month reversed a demolition denial from the city’s historic preservation commission.

A Cordogan Clark official involved with the report did not return a voice mail seeking comment. Lauzen did not return a message seeking comment.

Wills said it is up to the county to respond and show whether officials have explored alternatives to demolition and explain why they would not work.

Hideaway rezoning decision delayed

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The decision on whether to rezone the former Al Capone’s Hideaway property will have to wait at least another month.

The Kane County Development Committee was expected to consider the issue Tuesday, but the item was tabled until the May meeting. It is set for 10:30 a.m. May 19 in the County Board Room in Building A on the Kane County Government Center campus in Geneva.

Services Department, said the delay is related to an intergovernmental agreement with the village of Wayne – not anything related to the petitioner.

The Casiello family is seeking the zoning change, so it can reopen the former steakhouse as a restaurant and bar, Hideaway 64, 35W335 Riverside Drive, St. Charles Township.

VanKerkhoff has said the zoning issue stems from the village of Valley View’s dissolution, when every property in the village was placed in a farming district. The Hideaway was considered a nonconforming use but lost that status when it closed in 2012, he has said.

Last week, the Zoning Board of Appeals voted in favor of rezoning after taking nearly two hours of public

comment from those in support and in opposition of the Casiello family’s plans.

ST. CHARLES – Several roads in St. Charles will be affected Saturday by a running event, the St. Charles Police Department announced Tuesday in a news release.

The Multisport Madness half-marathon and 10K is set for 7 to 10:30 a.m.

With the first phase of the run using State Street from North Third Street, traffic will be down to one lane. Police officers and emergency management personnel will manage the opposing traffic patterns, according to the release.

Participants will continue west on Dean Street to North 17th Street and will eventually head south along Randall Road before turning west on Dean Street to LeRoy Oakes, the release states, noting runners will return via the same route.

Parking will be prohibited along State and Dean streets for the event’s duration. The city’s “O” parking lot, also known as the VFW lot, will be closed from 4 to 11 a.m., according to police.

The city’s “G” parking lot, also known as the River Plaza lot, will have parking spaces dedicated for local business parking, the release states.

Motorists should allow for extra time when commuting throughout the affected areas, according to the release. Drivers should watch for runners, spectators and emergency responders assisting with the event, the release stated.

Fortunately, we have some data to answer that question.

The first thing to note is that the overall child mortality rate in the United States has never been lower. In 1935, for instance, there were nearly 450 deaths for every 100,000 children ages 1 to 4. Today, there are fewer than 30 deaths for every 100,000 kids in that age group – more than a tenfold decrease.

Part of that decrease is due to a drop in child homicides.

As of 2008, the homicide rate for kids under age 14 stood at a near-record low 1.5 cases per

100,000, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. And the homicide rate for teens ages 14 to 17 plummeted from 12 per 100,000 in 1993 to just 5.1 in 2008, another near-record low.

So for a kid between the ages of 5 and 14 today, the chance of premature death by any means is roughly 1 in 10,000, or 0.01 percent.

But parents typically aren’t thinking about disease or general mortality when they fret over unattended kids – we’re worried about all the terrible things that theoretically could happen to children out on their own. Chief among them is the threat of being abducted or of disappearing without a trace.

The FBI has several decades

of data on missing persons, and the number of missing-person reports involving minors has been at record low levels in recent years; it has fallen by 40 percent since 1997.

This is more impressive when you consider that the overall U.S. population has grown, meaning that the actual rate of missing-person reports for children has declined even more than 40 percent.

So where does this leave us in the debate over “free-range” children? Kids are dying less often. They’re getting hit by cars less often. And they’re going missing less frequently, too. The likelihood of any of these scenarios is both historically low and infinitesimally small.

Victims soon will begin reconstructing their lives and property. Sadly, it is not uncommon for unscrupulous builders to offer assistance following these types of incidents. The Illinois Insurance Association urges residents to be on the alert for scam artists posing as legitimate building contractors.

Illinois’ Consumer Protection Against Storm Chasers Act protects citizens from those who would prey on them following a natural disaster. The law applies to storm-related repairs linked to insurance settlements.

Contractors are prohibited from rebating or waiving the policy deductible, and cannot represent or negotiate on behalf of the homeowner in the claim process.

In addition, contractors must make homeowners aware of their right to cancel the repair contract and provide the appropriate form.

Property insurance helps policy holders cope with the financial burden that comes with rebuilding, repairing and replacing

storm damage. However, homeowners insurance is not designed to pay for every loss situation. This can put the homeowner in a difficult situation, especially if he or she already has signed a repair contract.

The Storm Chasers Act allows homeowners to cancel the repair contract within five business days of receiving a denial letter from the insurance company. It also obligates the contractor to return the homeowner’s advance payment, less emergency repair costs.

Roofing contractors also must include their name and license number on bids, contract, building permits, commercial vehicles and advertisements. In addition, Illinois roofers cannot lease their license numbers to out-ofstate roofing contractors.

Storm victims can protect themselves from unscrupulous contractors by consulting with their insurance agents and adjusters. It is best to work with a familiar builder or one recommended by the insurer. Residents who believe they have been approached by someone engaging in a deceptive practice should contact the local state’s attorney’s office.

Batavia holds off late push

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Whenever the girls soccer schedule comes out, both Geneva and Batavia make sure to circle one game: when they square off in conference play.

The two girls soccer rivals met once again Tuesday at Geneva for the latest installment of the rivalry.

After scoring twice in the first half, Batavia held off a late Geneva push to get the 2-1 Upstate Eight Conference River Division win.

“This is one of our biggest games each season,” Bulldogs senior captain Karina Rosales said. “We haven’t been able to beat them in the past couple of seasons, so tonight was a really big win for us moving forward.”

After hitting the post early in the first half, Rosales didn’t miss on her next chance, scoring just a minute before halftime to give the Bulldogs (8-1-3,

3-1 UEC River) a two-goal lead into the break.

Megan McEachern scored less than five minutes into the game for Batavia, which completely dominated play in the first half.

Bulldogs coach Mark Gianfrancesco was happy with the effort his team gave, but expected the late push from Geneva (4-5-2, 1-1-2).

“We knew they were going to put some pressure on in the second half,” Gianfrancesco said. “Once they got back into the game, we panicked a little bit, and that comes with inexperience. It’s good for us to come out on top in games like this to build confidence.”

That Geneva push was started after Maddie Stellick’s shot from well outside the box beat leaping Bulldogs goalkeeper Jenny Scara to narrow the gap to one with more than 23 minutes remaining.

Coach Megan Owens was pleased with the Vikings’ push and effort for most of the sec-

ond half, but is still looking for her team to put a complete 80 minutes together.

“We’re still looking to be much more consistent,” Owens said. “We did some things really well at the end, but we came out a bit scared and can’t have that against a team like that.

We’re getting better, but we’re young and it will come with time and experience.”

The Vikings nearly tied the score with seven minutes remaining on a 25-yard free kick off the foot of Megan Fitz. The ball curved through the wind, bounced off the left goal post and was cleared away.

“Things definitely got a little tense at the end,” Rosales said. “We did enough tonight to get the win, but I credit them for fighting back and making it interesting.”

This was the first game for Gianfrancesco and the Bulldogs since losing their first game of the season to St. Charles East a week ago, and he thought his team came out with a much bet-

ter sense of urgency.

“I think the girls were ready and a lot more focused to play today,” Gianfrancesco added.

“Against East, I’m not sure we made it off the bus mentally, so today’s turnaround was good to see.”

Scara made three saves in goal for Batavia, while Emma Harkleroad, who is returning to health after a collarbone injury suffered earlier this season, stopped one shot in goal for the Vikings.

Geneva’s road doesn’t get any easier, as the team heads to the Naperville North Invite to take on Wheaton North and Hinsdale Central.

Batavia will have a couple of home conference games against Larkin and West Chicago this week.

“We can use this to gain momentum for the rest of the season,” Rosales said. “This is one of those games that we might be able to look back on and say helped us grow and get to where we want to be as a team.”

Hannah Frazier both rank atop their respective graduating classes at Batavia.

Both will compete in collegiate athletics, as well.

Hannah, a junior, verbally committed to NCAA Division I St. Louis this past weekend.

In February, Noah Frazier, a senior, joined the football program at Division III Wheaton College.

Also a standout wrestler, Noah Frazier conceded ground to his kid sister earlier this year when discussing their occasional basketball encounters.

“Yeah, yeah. A little bit here and there. We’ve got a basketball hoop in our driveway, so when I have time, I’ll play with her,” he said. “She usually gets the better of me.”

Noah Frazier shouldn’t sulk. Hannah Frazier averaged 22.1 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocks a game last season.

“She doesn’t just play inside. … She’s been shooting the ball outside so well,” Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen said. “The versatility, just her physique, is going to translate well. She has size, but she carries it so well, and she’s just so athletic.”

As a result, Vikings coach Derek Bahler hardly deflected praise.

“Toward the end of our game, our defense just locked it down,” Bahler said. “We kept the lead and the defense kept turning away the opportunities. We made the plays we had to to win the game, and it was a great win for us.”

Geneva earned a St. Charles sweep with the 9-8 victory, which came only four days after the Vikings dispatched of St. Charles North for the first time in program history.

“Leadership, chemistry and accountably have been the three big things for us,” Bahler said. “We’ve got a great group of captains, a great group of returning varsity players in general. Our sophomores have really been stepping up as a group and pushing the upperclassmen

NOTEWORTHY Tough early season schedule should help North As much as people look at a team’s record to define whether it is successful or not, St. Charles North girls soccer coach Ruth Vostal has a different approach with her team.

Although Vostal wants to see her team win each time out, she is focused on the girls getting better whenever they steop on the field, too “I’m not really focused on record at this point,” Vostal said. “We are playing quality opponents, and the strength of our schedule will benefit us. We want to play the best teams because that’s what makes us better.”

North (7-2-1) has had a strong start regardless of caring about its record or not.

The North Stars have been led by Hanna Durocher and Gia Wahlberg, who have scored ten of the team’s past 13 goals in its past four games.

The North Stars are involved in the PepsiCo Showdown, which features some of the best teams in the state, which has helped

North see different styles of play.

The North Stars have beaten Lake Forest – in penalty kicks – Vernon Hills and Warren in the tournament.

“When you play teams you aren’t as familiar with, it is definitely a challenge,” Vostal said. “But it also allows you to see different styles of play, which can also be beneficial.”

The North Stars’ two losses came to Hinsdale Central, 2-1, as part of the PepsiCo Showdown, and Conant, 1-0, in their season opener.

“We have been playing good team defense and have been creating good chances up front,” Vostal said. “We are very pleased with where we are at this point.”

East’s Mollenhauer in good spirits after ACL tear After tearing her right ACL on April 14 against Batavia, St. Charles East senior Molly Mollenhauer learned she would miss the remainder of the season and redshirt her freshman season at the

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

At first the news was tough to hear and handle, but the senior defender knows she still has an important role with the Saints.

“I really don’t think my role has changed,” Mollenhauer said. “I have always done my best to be a leader, and now I will do the same off the field. I’ll be there every step of the way and am excited to see us conquer any challenge we face this season.”

Mollenhauer will have a doctor’s appointment May 8 to discuss surgery and recovery time. In the meantime, she has gone through some physical therapy since suffering the injury to see if the swelling will go down.

She started all ten games that she was available for the unbeaten Saints this season.

In Mollenhauer’s absence, the Saints will be a bit thinner on the back line, but still have a lot of experience with Sonia Ost, Sara Buetow and Maggie Smith.

HITTING REWIND Rosary still is trying to find consistency. The Royals had a stretch with three straight wins, scoring 22 goals in those games. But, then Rosary suffered three straight losses, where it was outscored, 12-2. Rosary defeated Montini, 7-1, on Thursday, and after blanking Aurora Central Catholic, 2-0, on Tuesday hopes to keep its roll going for good.

You’re a freshman on varsity.

What has that been like for you?

The beginning was tough because the other girls are older and have been here already. But as the season has gone on, I know that I have to come ready to play and step up every day. There’s also another freshman (Hailey Rydberg) on the team, and we are close, so that helped me, too.

Your sister, Elli, is on the team.

What’s that like to play alongside her?

It’s been awesome to be out there together. We never knew if we’d play on the same team because she’s two years older, but it’s definitely made my transition to the team much smoother. Between the rides to games and talking soccer to knowing how each other plays has been a great experience.

Your team has played a number of strong opponents to start the season. How will that help you guys in the future?

I think it will benefit us late in the season. Right now is about getting as many reps as we can against good competition. We have played a lot of good teams and different styles of play, so we will be ready for anything as the season goes on.

Have you gotten any jokes or questions about having the last name Wahlberg?

Actually yes. Teachers, coaches and teammates have asked, but no we are not related [to the entertainers] or anything.

St. Charles North freshman girls soccer standout Gia Wahlberg has had a big part of the team’s success to begin the season. The North Stars have had a very strong strength of schedule to prepare them for conference and postseason play, and entered Tuesday with a 6-2-1 record. By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Geneva first baseman Nick Porretto smacked a line drive off Mick Vyzral’s lower hip with one out in the top of Tuesday’s fourth inning.

Darting, not staggering, to his right, Vyzral promptly fired to first baseman Jake Asquini.

Four pitches later, Vyzral retired the side with a strikeout for the St. Charles East baseball team, displaying once more the manner in which the Saints handled would-be adversity in a 3-1 win.

“It’ll be all right,” Vyzral, a senior right-hander, said. “It was just a stinger.”

New bruises notwithstanding, East (12-2, 7-0 Upstate Eight Conference River Division) remained unblemished in league play behind Vyzral’s six-hitter and timely hitting against Geneva righty Bret Reed, who recovered from a comebacker of his own.

In the bottom of the fourth, Vikings second baseman Justin Hasegawa collected an Aus-

tin Regelbrugge liner that caromed off Reed’s knee for a 1-4-3 putout.

With the figurative damage done, both teams scored an inning later, beginning with Jack Wassel’s slicing RBI double down the left field line for Geneva (6-6, 3-4).

East tied the game on third baseman Mick Vyzral Reid Olson’s run-scoring double with one out, then took the lead for good when catcher Anthony Adduci and designated hitter Austin Gift contributed successive, two-out RBI singles.

“Early in the game, we had a hard time sitting back on balls.

We were getting out in front, rolling over, grounding out,” Adduci said. “We made an adjustment, sat back on balls, tried to take them the other way. Which worked for us.”

Both teams had six hits.

Reed struck out four in 4⅔ innings. Vyzral, who has completed each of his three conference starts, scattered seven

strikeouts, one walk and one hit batsman.

“Just attacking the strike zone, sticking to the game plan, trying to get hitters out,” he said.

East won its 10th straight game, finishing its latest victory with a sprawling Regelbrugge catch in right field. Geneva suffered another narrow loss – “the story of our season so far,” in coach Matt Hahn’s words – and hopes to reverse both trends when the series continues today.

“Overall, I think we played a pretty clean game. It didn’t really work out in our favor, but we’re kind of used to this right now,” Vikings catcher Nate Montgomery said. “We’ve been losing some tough games lately, but we’ve been competing and we’ve been playing well as a team, and I think that we’re starting to heat up a little bit.

“The scoreboard may not say it, but we hung in it with them. So I like where we’re at.

I think pretty soon, we’re going to feed the beast and start piecing some stuff together.”

Kellett, Royals keep pushing, beat Chargers

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – Quincy Kellett spent most of the first half of Tuesday afternoon’s girls soccer match between Rosary and Aurora Central Catholic getting knocked around the field.

The senior forward spent the second half knocking in a pair of goals for the Royals, providing all the offense they needed in a 2-0 victory against their neighborhood rivals.

Kellett was present around the net all game, and her persistence paid off five minutes into the second half when she cashed in on the rebound after Chargers goalkeeper Bry Mandarino pushed a Maria Witte shot right back into play.

Four minutes later, Kellett doubled the lead off a pass from Emma Porteous that

bounced into the right side of the 18-yard box.

Rosary controlled the majority of the possession in the first half and pushed into the attacking third with relative ease, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Kellett had shots saved by Mandarino in the Quincy Kellett 25th and 26th minutes, and resolved to keep pushing.

“Yeah, it was obviously really important since we had plenty of opportunities in the first half and just couldn’t finish,” said Kellett, who tweeted her commitment to Dayton later Tuesday. “We wanted to go out hard right away in the second half and it worked out well.”

ACC coach Kristy Kane, who once coached Rosary, said she couldn’t find much

fault with the way her players approached the game as the Chargers continue to look for consistency on offense.

“This wasn’t a game where I was like, ‘Wow, we could have played so much better,’ ” Kane said. “I think this was a game where we played really well and did things that we’ve been working on: more runs being made, more people being involved, coming together as a team. I just think that even though we lost there were a lot of positives out there.”

The win over a familiar program and coach was nice for Rosary to get, Kellett said, but there’s still plenty of work to do as the Royals look forward to Thursday’s rematch with St. Francis, which won the first meeting of the season between the teams, 3-2.

“It’s always fun to beat a rival, but we’ve just got to keep getting better from here,” Kellett said.

Reduce indoor mold by eliminating sources of dampness Dear Doctor K: We just found out that my son is extremely allergic to mold. What can I do to minimize the mold in my home?

Dear Reader: Even if your son is getting allergy shots or taking medications, the best way to control his allergy is to reduce his exposure to mold.

Mold, along with mildew and yeasts, are the spores of fungi.

Spores are very light and travel in the air. Because spores are capable of surviving in dry, unpleasant conditions, they can live a long time. But they especially thrive in damp, warm environments.

Indoor molds are very common. More than 1,000 different molds live in homes in the United States. The best way to avoid indoor mold is to prevent it from forming in the first place. Molds like moist places, so try to find and fix sources of dampness.

To further minimize indoor mold: • Keep humidity levels in your home as low as you can. Use an air conditioner or dehumidifier during humid months.

• Be sure your home has adequate ventilation, including exhaust fans in bathrooms and in

• Clean mold-covered surfaces with a 1-to-10 ratio of bleach to water.

• If mold has entered drywall or insulation in your home, you’ll have to rip it out and replace it.

• Remove mold-infested carpets and upholstery and throw away any moldy items (including clothing, books and papers).

• Do not carpet bathrooms and basements.

• Add mold inhibitors to paint when redecorating.

• If you have house plants, don’t overwater; it encourages mold in the soil.

Molds also live outdoors.

Levels of some spores peak in late summer or early fall. Anyone allergic to mold should avoid areas that are likely to have it, such as wooded areas, compost piles, cut

grass and piles of damp, raked leaves. Remove damaged wood from your yard, since molds live on wet, rotten wood.

Also, when possible, encourage your son to avoid outdoor activities on windy and rainy days.

Mold spore counts increase in warm, humid weather and immediately after summer rainstorms.

As I’m sure you know, mold allergies are very common. In some people, molds can trigger asthma. I have a mold allergy that inflames my nose. For me and most of my patients with mold allergies, carefully eliminating or reducing exposure to molds using the suggestions I’ve described gives sufficient relief.

However, when constant stuffy and runny nose, sinus congestion and asthma persist despite everything, allergy treatments can help.

Allergy shots (called subcutaneous immunotherapy or SCIT) can give considerable additional relief.

Is it possible the teacher is a good disciplinarian?

Dr. Wallace: We have a teacher at our high school who is really mean and overly strict.

Everybody hates her, and a lot of students complain that they do not receive fair grades, either. She has been at our school for nearly five years already, and I think she should be fired.

I am passing around a petition for all of the students in her classes to sign, requesting the school not to have her return for the 2015-2016 school year.

So far, 100 students have signed the petition out of about 130 students enrolled in her classes.

We will then give the petition to the principal and a copy also to the district superintendent. A lot of parents have been talking about this, too.

A lot of them, including my dad, also think she grades too hard, because she gave my brother a C when he should have received an A or possibly a B at the very least.

My parents know about this and think we may have a chance of having our voices heard.

Driving after consuming alcohol is unacceptable!

And some defensive plays can be very hard to find. The one in this deal would elude most players.

South is in four hearts. West leads the spade queen: two, eight, five. West continues with the spade jack and a third spade, which declarer ruffs. South draws two rounds of trumps, West discarding either the club two or club nine on the second.

Declarer continues with the club ace and king, then he gets off play with a trump. What should East lead to trick nine?

The bidding featured a textbook game-invitational limit raise by North. South happily went on to game.

East should realize that if declarer had held a club loser, he would have ruffed it in the dummy. Having got that far, many Easts would shift to a diamond.

But if South follows the odds by playing for split honors, he will make his contract, losing only two spades and one heart.

East should work out that South must have started with 2-5-4-2 shape. And if so, it is right to concede a ruff-and-sluff by leading a spade or a club. This cannot give away the contract, and will be the winner here.

Declarer cannot avoid losing a diamond trick.
