Every time she walked by, the parent bird began dragging its wing and going opposite the nest.

Although not certified as a naturalist, Bohannon said she has a lot of knowledge from working there and learning from Trish Burns, the Peck Farm Park manager, another naturalist.

“I have gone through Kane County certification classes, but I’m not actually certified.

It is not a requirement for the job,” said Bohannon, 53, a St. Charles resident. “I have a master’s degree in elemen-

tary education, and it fits in with being a naturalist – love nature and educating kids on nature.”

On any given day, Bohannon is involved in a class or program or interacting with the public, imparting wisdom about the natural world.

A group of 150 seventh-graders from Geneva Middle School North were on a recent field trip and learned that artificially created monoculture – that is, a perfect suburban lawn – is not good for the environment, she said.

“We were talking about plant and animal diversity on the prairie,” Bohannon said.

“We talked about milkweed.

There’s not as many monarch

butterflies any more because of the lack of milkweed. The huge monarch population around here has become a rarity. The population is in huge decline.”

Monarchs, North America’s only migrating insect, will lay eggs only on the milkweed plant, and it is the only plant the monarch caterpillar will eat.

“We talked about what we can do – and planting milkweed might help,” Bohannon said. “Most people understand we’re not doing the best things for the planet that we could be. ... It’s not just protecting the planet from monocultures, it’s picking up trash ... recycling.”

Kim Bohannon gently woke Stripe and Gizmo, two tiny sugar gliders snoozing in a pouch she carried around her neck.

“They like to be carried in a pouch – they’re marsupials,” Bohannon explained, as she coaxed them out and into their two-story cage in the visitor’s center at Peck Farm Park Interpretive Center, part of the Geneva Park District.

Nearby, a leopard frog gazed balefully at Bohannon and a visitor through the glass of his aquarium, ignoring winged nearby winged crickets “Once [the crickets] get their wings, he won’t eat them,” she said. “I’ll feed them to Stripe and Gizmo.”

The frog will be returned to Peck Lake and another will be caught to live in the aquarium so young visitors can see one close up, she said.

“They’re an invasive species, but they are so common now, it’s hard to call them invasive,” Bohannon said.

Everything a visitor comes in contact with at the Peck Farm Park is an opportunity for Bohannon to teach something about the natural world.

As a naturalist, Bohannon facilitates the public’s understanding of their natural world, whether examining a deer hoof, watching hawks, looking for invertebrates in the water – or explaining the difference between toads and frogs.

Toads are actually frogs, she said. The leopard frog’s other names are meadow frog and green frog. Bohannon pulled out a hand-held device that has recorded frog and bird sounds to illustrate.

Then she changed slides, and the plaintive “kill-deer” trill of the killdeer filled the room.

“I love the baby killdeers; they look like pingpong balls with long, skinny legs,” Bohannon said.

Mom seeks ‘one safe place’ to cross 3rd

Insurance company reviewing report on village-owned North Aurora Activity Center

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Village trustees are waiting to see how much the village’s insurance company will pay for damage to the village-owned North Aurora Activity Center and possible repair costs before making a decision on the building’s future.

The North Aurora Activity Center at 1 N. Lincolnway, has been closed since March 12 because of structural damage.

Batavia-based Kluber Architects and Engineers had determined there are three sections of the building where the roof joists were deemed to have failed.

The village’s insurance company is reviewing a report by an insurance adjuster that has examined the building’s condition.

“It’s hard for the board to make a decision without knowing if it’s covered,” Village Administrator Steve Bosco said Monday. “Knowing how much they will pay will help us make a decision.”

The unusually heavy snowfall this season in creased the load on the building, Bosco said. Share and Care Learning Center, which

was one of the main tenants in the North Aurora Activity Center, recently found a new permanent home in the former Rainbow Tile building at 12 John St. in North Aurora.

The North Aurora Activity Center originally served as North Aurora Grade School from 1933 to 1968. Other tenants in the building included Haley’s Playground, which serves those with special needs.

Haley’s Playground has announced a new partnership with the Association of Individual Development’s Keeler Center in Aurora, and will be moving there soon.

The Friday Nite Spot – a volunteer-run activity for fourth- through eighth-grade students – also has been housed at the North Aurora Activity Center.

City Administrator Mary McKittrick said city officials look at Third Street traffic and pedestrian safety issues regularly in partnership with the Geneva Chamber of Com-

merce.

“We want to invite guests to come into the city to shop, so it’s a delicate balance in trying to accommodate the traffic, pedestrians, vehicles and be aware of safety at same time,” McKittrick said.

In order to put up stop signs, McKittrick said, the city needs criteria to justify them.

“The reason we haven’t put the stop signs there is because we can’t justify doing it legally,” McKittrick said. “There has to be a legal basis for us to

enforce a law.”

“You have four-way stops with no traffic,” Anderson countered. “It feels like you’re saying, ‘Well, until somebody gets hit, we are not going to do anything about it.’ ” McKittrick invited Anderson to meet with officials and consider some ideas.

“What data could I bring to the meeting to show there is a need for improved safety there? Is it signatures?” Anderson said. “I’m willing to do the work to show you there is citizen support for this idea.”

City committee turns down proposed drive-thru grocery

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A city committee Monday could not get behind a drive-thru grocery for the west side because of its proposed liquor sales.

The Government Services Committee voted 7-1 in favor of denying a Class A liquor license to a proposed drive-thru grocery store. First Ward Alderman Ronald Silkaitus was the lone member to vote against the denial, and Dan Stellato, the other First Ward alderman, recused himself from the discussion and vote.

Peter Bogle, the local businessman who founded the LLC group behind the grocery store, was disappointed with the committee’s vote.

“We want [St. Charles] to

be a city that’s leading, not following,” Bogle said after he left the meeting. “Another city is going to get it, and St. Charles is going to miss out.”

Bogle wanted to open the store at 2071 Route 38 near the southeast corner of Randall Road and Route 38 in the former Quick Lube location.

He estimated that 50 percent of sales would be food and the other 50 percent would be beer and wine.

The alcohol sales were a deal breaker for many of the alderman on the committee, including Fifth Ward Alderman Maureen Lewis.

“I don’t think liquor needs to be made convenient,” Lewis said.

Lewis noted that alderman were not supportive in initial discussions for a proposed

drive-thru for the Lundeen’s Liquor express location, 1315 W. Main St. She also was concerned that the success of the store was going to rely heavily on receiving a liquor license.

Bogle said beer and wine sales would help the store get a quicker return on the store investment.

Three other people spoke besides Bogle before the committee voted, including St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina.

He reminded people that the west side of St. Charles has inactive buildings, which is something he also mentioned in February when the city’s Liquor Control Commission discussed the drive-thru store.

“What are we doing about filling empty spaces?” Rogina said.

GENEVA – A young mother of two small children asked the City Council on Monday for help in improving pedestrian safety on Third Street.

“I’ve had many conversations with my aldermen, the police department and Mayor [Kevin] Burns,” Brannon Anderson said. “I know you’ve all done a lot of work in this area … but I believe we can do just a bit better our community.”

Anderson said the only safe place to cross is at Routes 31 and 38 where the traffic lights are. She suggested a four-way stop sign at Third and Franklin streets or a pedestrian controlled traffic light.

Anderson said the temporary signs warning motorists to stop for pedestrians are not enough.

Anderson described a situation a few weeks ago in which she was walking with a 2-year-old and 5-year-old where she had to step out into the crosswalk to see if it was

Instructor urges caution near Fox River dams

Everyone should be wary of the low-head dams on the Fox River, a swift water rescue instructor and owner of a kayak business said.

Ryan Rushton on Monday spoke to the Kane County Chronicle about safety precautions following a fatal kayak incident at the low head Geneva dam on Saturday. Dinesh Sudhakar-Uckoo, 26, of Bloomington died as a result of drowning after his two-person kayak fell over the dam. Sudhakar-Uckoo became caught in the boil in front of the dam, Geneva fire officials said.

“Low-head dams are deadly and dangerous,” Rushton said.

Rushton said when water drops over an object, the water at the bottom of the object recirculates and feeds back into itself. The difference at a low-head dam is that’s it’s a uniform object, a concrete wall, Rushton said.

Rushton is the owner of the Geneva Kayak Center, which moved from a location in Geneva near the dam to Yorkville in 2010. Any kayak renters at his business are escorted to the river by store staff, who then give a safety briefing.

“We would tell them we couldn’t rent the kayak to them if we felt they wouldn’t be safe on the water or if the water was too high,” Rushton said.

Municipalities can learn from Yorkville, which replaced its dams with whitewater rapids after several fatalities. The last fatality at the Geneva dam was Aug. 5, 2011, when Randy Suchy, 57, of Bolingbrook drowned after he jumped into the Fox River to save a 12-year-old boy near the dam.

Fire crews were able to get Sudhakar-Uckoo from the boil about 6 p.m. Saturday, Loomis said.

Geneva Fire Chief Steve Olson confirmed that Sudhakar-Uckoo was wearing a life jacket when he was retrieved from the boil. He was pronounced dead by paramedics after consultation with Delnor’s emergency room staff, the release said.

The coroner’s office was called to the scene at 6:22 p.m.

The office is cooperating with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Police in its investigation into Sudhakar-Uckoo’s death.

“He’s somebody’s son,” Stankus said Monday as he talked about Saturday’s incident.

Stankus was sitting on a bench with his wife, Karen, on Saturday near the dam. He said the two men got into the river at the canoe and kayak

launch site at Old Mill Park, about 50 feet upstream of the dam on the east side of the river.

The men appeared to have difficulty paddling once they were on the water in their kayak, he said. The men’s kayak was parallel to the top of the dam, but the current was pushing them towards the edge.

As the kayak went over, the man who survived, jumped out of the kayak and also was wearing a life vest. The man began to move downriver after he came out of the boil.

“That’s when I felt like I had a chance to go get him,” Stankus said.

Stankus jumped in the water but the man was carried under the Route 38 bridge. He signaled to people on the other side the man was coming and was later rescued.

Stankus said Sudhakar-Uckoo also got out of the kayak when it fell over the dam, but then disappeared in the boil.

“It just turned tragic very quickly,” Stankus said Monday.

The Forest Preserve District of Kane County asks trail users to be aware of various tree-trimming projects, coordinated by ComEd this spring, that may briefly affect multiregional trail systems.

Andi’s Faith was strong and without compromise. Andi didn’t battle cancer, she dealt with it her own way, no radical treatment, and she amazed her doctors, surviving for eight years of quality living, after first being diagnosed, until it finally took her.

Andi graduated from West Aurora High School in 1959. She married Ron Waddell in 1968, and they enjoyed 46 years together.

After high school, Andi worked for Dr. Martin in Aurora, and later at Mooseheart in the 1960s. Then she found her true love line of work, floral designing. And she worked at many of the stores in the area: Browns, JonLee and Northgate flowers in Aurora, as well as North Aurora Florist. And for a while, she managed Robbins Flowers in Batavia.

She retired with her husband to their beloved Northwoods of Wisconsin, eight years ago, where they vacationed for so many years.

Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Craig Hanson said a small stove fire activated the alarm at about noon at Meadows Apartments, 318 Dempsey St. A sprinkler head in the apartment controlled and extinguished the fire by the time

firefighters arrived, Hanson said.

He said firefighters remained on the scene to verify the fire was completely out and to check the residents’ health.

No injuries were reported, he said.

Hanson did not know the extent of the damage and the number of units affected.

He said there are about 50 apartments in the building.

The fire district received additional assistance from its part-time personnel, Hanson said, noting the help was appreciated on a holiday.

Schultz was taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, where she was pronounced dead.

Police said Schultz was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and that the motorcycle was the only vehicle involved in the incident. Schultz was the only one on the motorcycle, police added.

The protest was held on public property near a bus stop south of the Randall Road and Mill Street intersection. It was the closest organizer Samantha Clark could get to the store, 401 N. Randall Road, without risking arrest.

A former South Elgin man charged with child pornography has entered a blind plea and will be sentenced in June, according to Kane County court records.

David B. Hauge, 49, was charged in November 2012 with ag- David B. gravated child Hauge pornography, a Class X felony, and child pornography, a Class 2 felony, after members of the South Elgin Police Department, Kane County Sheriff’s Office and Geneva Police Department conducted a search warrant at his home.

Police have reported that

Court records indicate Hauge entered a blind or cold guilty plea Wednesday on the child pornography charge.

Because it was a blind plea, no sentencing agreement was in place, and the judge will decide his sentence based on the attorneys’ arguments, a spokesperson with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said.

Judge Karen M. Simpson is expected to conduct the sentencing hearing June 18 at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles Township, records show.

The aggravated child pornography charge has been dismissed.

Court records indicate Hauge now lives in Elburn.

Stem cells: Good or evil?

THE WASHINGTON POST Controversies over stem-cell research are so last decade – or so it seemed until last week.

For the last few years, the promising field of stem-cell research has focused on a technique that skirts various ethical concerns about the treatment of human embryos and the potential to clone whole human beings. But last week, U.S. and South Korean researchers announced they went ahead with a different technique, successfully creating stem cells cloned from the normal skin cells of adults.

Their work helps to open a new avenue in stem-cell research.

But it also could be a step on the way to human reproductive cloning.

Some ethical worries are reasonable, but they are not enough reason to hold back this research.

Since the late 1990s, scientists have held out the prospect of extraordinary new treatments from pluripotent stem cells, which are stem cells that can grow into all sorts of different tissues at researchers’ urging. Scientists might be able to grow insulin-producing cells for patients with diabetes.

People suffering from macular degeneration might not have to lose their sight. There is even the potential to grow whole organs, matched exactly to patients, that could replace diseased ones.

Early research often involved taking stem cells from embryos discarded during in-vitro fertilization therapy.

That procedure stoked opposition from people concerned about embryo destruction during scientific experimentation. Then scientists developed a different technique for har-

vesting stem cells that involved “reprogramming” adult cells, no embryos involved.

Work on that procedure continues, but there is concern in some quarters that it will not reliably and uniformly produce usable stem cells. So other scientists have been working on something called somatic cell nuclear transfer, which involves taking the nucleus out of a human egg and replacing it with the nucleus from an adult cell. Last week’s announcement came from researchers who had refined the nuclear transfer process and achieved the results they were looking for – pluripotent human stem cells.

The procedure is not perfect. It took a lot of eggs to record a few successes. Moreover, it is the sort of technique scientists would use if they were trying to engage in reproductive cloning – creating fully formed human beings who are exact genetic copies of other human beings.

The question is whether researchers who aren’t interested in reproductive cloning should be barred from refining the nuclear transfer process lest a rogue scientist decides to try Xeroxing people.

We’d say they should not be restricted if the method may advance the search for bona fide stem-cell therapies. There is a clear ethical distinction between cloning a human’s cells in order to redeploy them in medical treatment and growing a genetic copy of a human being. As long as scientists do not cross ethical lines much farther from where they are now – lines that Congress could write into federal law – researchers should have the flexibility to go in whichever direction is scientifically useful.

St. Francis fared well in that comparison Monday night. The Spartans beat the North Stars in two games, 2512 and 25-21, in a nonconference contest.

“St. Charles North is a good team. Last year they made it to state,” St. Francis coach Mike Lynch said.

“They are always a good measuring stick because they have a really good program.”

The Spartans (15-2) dominated the first game, scoring six unanswered to start the contest. A Jack Bujko (three kills, three blocks) tip finally put North on the scoreboard, down 6-1.

St. Francis scored another seven points before the North Stars scored their second point on a Ben Connor kill.

North (7-9) closed the gap to 18-8 on a Brendan Donlevy kill but the North Stars were not able to get any closer.

“We were organized on the court but unorganized in our thoughts,” North coach Todd Weimer said. “I thought we had a nice game plan but we just did not execute very well.”

“We were just really shaky. We didn’t practice all weekend,” said Bujko. “Also Jendryk put up really hard hits and a big blocks so sometimes it was harder for our players to block him.”

The second game started out as a tight battle between the two teams. The first half of the game featured four ties and three lead changes.

The Spartans took the lead for good 11-10 on a North Star hitting error.

The North Stars pulled with two points 19-17 on a Drew Lanz kill but were unable to close the gap.

“We reorganized our thoughts and started executing a little bit better [in the second set],” Weimer said. “Confidence started to build when we got a block or two on [Jendryk]. He had a tremendous match. We just couldn’t quite finish it.”

Carhart’s cleverness comes into play

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Ben Carhart is one of those guys who figures to land on his feet if professional baseball doesn’t go his way.

The Cougars catcher finished among the top 10 seniors academically in a class of about 600 students while participating in a challenging magnet program at Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) High School.

“I was actually in a pre-medicine magnet, and I wanted to get out of it, and my parents wouldn’t let me,” Carhart said. “I was always a big guy competing with all my friends, we kind of had a group of guys trying to compete for grades.”

Carhart, transitioning this season from the infield to catcher, demonstrated he has plenty of baseball IQ to go with his book smarts in Monday afternoon’s 5-3 loss

to Beloit in front of a youthful crowd of 3,688 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Batting with a runner on first base in the bottom of the third, Carhart worked a hitand-run beautifully, slapping a ground ball to the precise spot Snappers second baseman Chih-Fang Pan vacated to cover second base once the Cougars’ Carlos Penalver took off from first base.

That play put runners at the corners with one out, and cleanup batter Yasiel Balaguert responded with an RBI single to give the Cougars (11-6) a 3-0 lead.

“Nothing prettier than a hit-and-run worked perfect,” Carhart said. “[Manager Mark Johnson] called it, and I love doing hit-and-runs. He told us from the beginning of the season, he wants to do that a lot.”

Johnson called the crafty Carhart “a pleasure to coach.”

“He’s very cerebral,” Johnson said. “Tons of apti-

tude. Just really grasps what you say to him every day on a daily basis as far as his defense and his offense. He just thrives on information that we give him.”

Carhart hit .247 while playing first base and third base for High-A Daytona last season, then slotted down to Low-A Kane County this season as the Cubs identified Carhart as a potential option to address their organizational shortfall at catcher.

“He squats naturally and he’s got the throwing stroke,” Johnson said. “The biggest thing is he’s got the thing between his ears. He’s got a brain. That’s what you need first and foremost from your catcher. He can think through situations and think ahead of situations.”

Carhart and Penalver had two hits apiece for the Cougars but Kane County went scoreless the last six innings in dropping their third straight game.

By STEVE NITZ snitz@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The DeKalb baseball team had a tough time catching up to Kaneland pitcher Anthony Holubecki Monday afternoon.

Holubecki gave up two runs on three hits in five innings of work, and when Knights reliever Nick Stahl came in, he was just as tough.

Stahl struck out the side in the sixth and didn’t allow a base runner in two innings of work in Kaneland’s 7-2 win.

The game featured a 30-minute delay after one of the umpires spotted lightning in the distance.

The Knights improve to 8-3 and remain unbeaten 4-0 in conference. The Barbs fall to 5-5 and remain winless in the NI BIg 12 East at 0-4.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, Kaneland got four runs in the second off DeKalb starter Zach Moan, and added three insurance runs in the seventh off reliever Max Fleetwood.

save of the season after relieving Holubecki, who was removed because of a high pitch count.

“Stahl, I’ll tell you, we’re really impressed with Nick right now,” Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said. “He’s so efficient coming up throwing strikes, throwing the hammer there.”

Holubecki, a sophomore who’s already committed to Notre Dame did have some control problems – he walked four batters, but finished with seven strikeouts and the DeKalb batters were never re-

DeKalb got on the board first when center fielder Josh Snead lined a single to left, scoring Patrick Aves – one of only three hits for the Barbs.

DeKalb got another run in the third when Aves scored on a wild pitch, but left two men on to end the inning after leaving two on in the first. “[Holubecki]’s tough. He’s going to get his strikeouts. I actually thought our approach against him wasn’t bad, we just never got the big hit,”

DeKalb coach Jake Howells said. “When you’re facing a guy who’s throwing that well, you may only have a couple opportunities to put together big innings. And we had opportunities, we just never got the big hit.”

At the plate, Joe Laudont finished 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored for Kaneland. Tyler Carlson was 3 for 3 with a walk, run scored and two stolen bases.

The teams continue their series at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Kaneland.

BURLINGTON – Burlington Central pitcher Jake Schutta made things easy on his coach Monday against Harvard.

“I was calling pitches and felt like I was playing a video game,” Rockets coach Kyle Nelson said. “You call a pitch and it goes right where you want it to. He gets like that sometimes where he doesn’t miss his spots.”

Schutta struck out 13 Hornets and fired 56 strikes in 83 pitches to complete a 9-0 perfect game in their Big Northern Conference East Division baseball game.

“I was attacking the zone and hitting my spots,” said Schutta, who is 2-0. “Once I got ahead in the count, I threw off-speed pitches to get them swinging.”

It was Schutta’s first perfect game, although he said he had a no-hitter in a summer league game. The closest Harvard came to getting a runner on base was in the second when Justin Nolen tapped a slow grounder toward third base. Rockets third baseman Cody Schuver grabbed it and fired to first to beat Nolen on a bang-bang play.

Harvard was unable to get a ball out of the infield.

“I was aware [I had a perfect game],” Schutta said. “It was lingering in my head [in the last inning], but I knew I had to focus on the mitt and execute the pitches.”

Schuver led the Rockets (8-4 overall, 3-1 BNC East) with a home run, a double and five RBIs. He hit a two-run homer in the third and a three-run double in the fourth.

Geneva 5, Bartlett 3: At Geneva, Nick Derr went 2 for 3 with a home run, Jack Wassel drove in two runs and winning pitcher Bret Reed threw six innings to lead Geneva (9-2, 5-1 Upstate Eight Conference River) to the conference crossover win. The Vikings battled back from an early 3-0 deficit.

The North Stars scored two runs each in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to earn the comeback win. Riley Coomes and Kyle Khoury each drove in two runs.

With no outs and Viking runners on second and third, Kaneland reliever Nick Henne started to throw a pitch to Geneva batter Jason Croci.

Instead, Henne faked a pickoff to unoccupied first base.

The move was called a balk and Brandon Evert was waved home from third base with what would have been

Geneva’s go-ahead run. Alex Lobrillo advanced to third.

Kaneland coach Brian Aversa appealed the call. After the three-man umpiring crew discussed the play, they reversed the call and ordered Evert back to third and Lobrillo to second. The officials decided that Henne had taken a step backward off the pitching rubber so the pick-off attempt was not a balk.

“If he had jumped and straddled the rubber then that’s a balk, but he stepped off,” Aversa said. “I’m going to battle for my kids and [Geneva coach Matt Hahn is] going to battle for his.”

“I have no comment on that,” Hahn said when asked about the umpire’s decision to reverse the call.

NOTEWORTHY Can’t go wrong with Geary’s glove Geneva junior Anna Geary has predominantly settled into the shortstop position for Geneva after playing center field for the Vikings as a freshman.

In Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader against Kaneland, Geary showed the Vikings what they’ve been missing in the outfield with a pair of excellent, run-saving plays.

Geary, who played shortstop in the first game, made a diving catch to end the top of the first of the second game, likely robbing Kaneland freshman Rachel Goress of an RBI hit.

Then, in the top of the sixth with Kaneland runners at first and second, Geary gathered Courtney Davis’ one-out single and fired home to cut down the Knights’ Morgan Sikon at the plate. That kept the score 7-1 Kaneland, which loomed large when the Vikings stormed back for a 9-8 victory.

Geary made the most of what Geneva coach Greg Di-

erks said was her first outfield appearance of the season. Of course, Geary’s defensive skill set also comes in handy at shortstop.

“If there was a way we could play her in both, we’d find it,” Dierks said. “She’s a good defensive player all the way around for us. But I know she’s capable of that. She’s as good of an outfielder as we’ve had probably.”

Knights tough at the top Kaneland’s 1-2 punch at the top of the order – leadoff batter Lexi Roach and No. 2 hitter Morgan Weber – reached base in seven of 10 combined at-bats of Saturday’s second game against Geneva, with a successful sacrifice bunt from Weber accounting for one of the three other occasions.

Weber, a promising freshman, also homered for the third time this season.

But after his team surrendered a six-run lead in the

loss, Kaneland coach Brian Willis said the Knights need better balance in their lineup.

“You need the bottom to produce, too,” Willis said. “It’s not a two-girl game. When you get runners on at the end of the game, you’ve got to come through with hits.”

Willis has given various girls opportunities to earn some of the up-for-grabs spots in the lineup.

“They’ll be the first ones to complain when they don’t play, and then they’ll be the first ones not to produce when they do play,” Willis said.

“There has to be some kind of way that these girls step up.”

One of the players who is emerging is Goress, who was hit by a pitch and laid down a sacrifice bunt in Game 1 and had two singles and a walk in the second game, when she moved from No. 7 to No. 6 in the Knights’ order.

Kaneland’s lineup depth should also be bolstered this week by the return of slugger

Paige Kuefler. Willis said Kuefler should be back this week after suffering a minor wrist injury in the first inning of Thursday’s loss to Yorkville.

Strong to the finish Burlington Central coach Wade Maisto naturally enjoyed Saturday’s 3-1 win against St. Charles North, and particularly the way Central closed the game in solid fashion.

Late-inning play has been an occasional sore spot for the Rockets this season, especially against Central’s tougher opponents.

“It was good for us to see we could finish off a game for a change because even when we beat Barrington, which also is a very good team, we almost let it go,” Maisto said.

“We were up 9-2 and we gave up six runs in the last inning and held on to win 9-8, so it didn’t really feel like a victory.”

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Antique games of all sorts interest collectors. Sometimes the rules of a game or the history of its design and graphics is unknown. Several 2013 auctions offered containers shaped like chickens, frogs or even vegetables that held nine related small figural “pins.” They are 19th-century children’s skittles sets. The game of skittles has been popular in England, Wales, Scotland and Germany for centuries, and was mentioned in writings as early as the 1300s. It is a lot like American bowling. It was played on a field, often near a pub. A ball, rounded stick or heavy disk was thrown at the nine pins. The object was to knock down all of the pins. Amusing game sets with papiermache figural pins and a rubber ball were popular in the 1920s and ‘30s.

The sets with animals and vegetables were made for children, possibly by the companies that made papier mache candy containers. They were small enough to use on the nursery floor or a tabletop. Full children’s sets are hard to find because the unusual pins often were used for other games and were eventually lost. Auction prices today for figural skittles sets in good condition range from about $1,500 to $18,000.

Q: About 40 years ago, my uncle gave me an interesting light bulb with a crucifix inside it. The cross and the bulb both light up. Can you tell me when this was made and if it’s worth anything?

A: Light bulbs with glowing figural objects inside were first made in the 1930s. They were made with different figures or words inside. Philip Kayatt invented them in 1933. He applied for a patent for a “glow lamp,” a tubular light bulb with a silhouette inside. In 1941 Kayatt was granted a patent for a glow lamp that could display figural objects. The bulbs contained neon or argon gas. The metal figure inside the bulb was coated with phosphors that made it glow. The drawing accompanying the patent shows a crucifix inside the tubular bulb. Kayatt was president of Aerolux Kayatt Glow Lights, which later became the Aerolux Light Corp.

The company made glow light bulbs from the 1930s until the 1970s, when it was bought by Duro-Lite. Other companies made similar bulbs. The value of glow bulbs can go from $15 to $65. *** Q: I read with interest your column about vintage talcum powder tins and the probability that old powder may be contaminated with traces of asbestos.

I am 74 and still have some full talcum powder tins I was given as a little girl.

The powder still smells good, but how can I tell if it contains asbestos?

A: Don’t worry about testing the powder. It’s not worth the expense and bother. But to be safe, don’t open the tins or use the powder. Inhaling it is the problem. Just enjoy displaying the old tins. Any cosmetic powder sold by U.S. retailers after the mid 1970s is safe to use. *** Q: I have a cream-colored Orphan Annie mug with green trim marked “manufactured exclusively for the Wander Co., Chicago, makers of Ovaltine.” It has a picture of Orphan

It’s part of an estate inherited by my husband. I believe the Chippendalestyle table dates from the 1930s or ‘40s. It’s marked with the letters CW; between the letters is a sort of arrow topped by the number 4.

A: Your table was made by the Kittinger (not Killinger) Furniture Co. of Buffalo, N.Y. The mark was used on official reproductions made for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation from 1937 to 1990. Kittinger is said to have reproduced more than 300 pieces of American antique furniture for the foundation. Most were made of mahogany and copy Chippendale, Queen Anne and Hepplewhite American antiques. Kittinger, which still is in business in Buffalo, traces its history back to 1866. A Colonial Williamsburg reproduction made by Kittinger is a high-quality piece of furniture. Your table, if in excellent shape, could be worth more than $1,000. *** adno=0266791

Q: I collect Victorian pressed glass. One odd piece I have had for years is a squat Amberette saltshaker with amber staining. Please tell me more about the pattern’s history and also what the shaker is worth.

A: Your saltshaker is the smaller of two shaker styles in the pattern, which is also known as Klondike.

The pattern was introduced in 1898

by Dalzell, Gilmore & Leighton Co. of Findlay, Ohio. Dalzall was in business from 1888 to 1902, but was sold to National Glass Co. in 1900. The pattern was made in clear glass, frosted glass, and frosted glass with amber staining. Collectors have also spotted a squatty shaker like yours in emerald glass. A pair of amber-stained squatty

‘The Railway Man’: Looking back in anger, agony

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post It’s easier to like “The Railway Man” than it is to love it.

Despite solid performances by Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman and Stellan Skarsgard, and a handsome cinematic sheen burnishing the shocking, true-life tale of wartime torture and reconciliation, the film is less deeply affecting than merely admirable. It’s a good, slick and well-intentioned film that wants so hard to be an important one that the slight feeling of letdown it leaves is magnified.

Based on a 1995 memoir by Englishman Eric Lomax – who, as a World War II soldier in the Far East was captured and brutalized by the Japanese army – the film jumps back and forth between Lomax’s shellshocked veteran circa 1980 (a nerdy looking Firth) and his much younger wartime self (portrayed with earnest appeal by Jeremy Irvine).

The scenes in the Thai POW camp, where Lomax and his comrades are forced to build the same railroad featured in the fictional film “The Bridge on the River Kwai,” are actually pretty gripping. That’s largely because they’re characterized by scenes of Lomax being tortured after confessing to building a

contraband radio.

As for the abuse Lomax suffers, it includes a harrowing precursor to waterboarding and bludgeonings so bone-crunchingly severe it’s a wonder he survived without limbs as mangled as his psyche.

For this pain, Lomax blames Japanese interpreter Takashi Nagase (Tanroh Ishida), a young man who is shown to be, at best, a complicit witness to Lomax’s torment and, at worst, an active instigator.

One notable shot shows Nagase’s face as some ambiguous emotion – possibly guilt, possibly fear – flashes across it.

These flashbacks are more compelling than the action set years later, back in England, where a middle-age Lomax seems to have turned into something of a damaged savant, obsessed with train schedules and jumping at the word boo. His wife (Kidman) calls him a “mess,” but Lomax’s condition betrays all the tidy symptoms of a Major Motion Picture Malady. There’s an actorly quality to the night terrors that looks more like showboating than like PTSD. Lomax’s ex-POW pal Finlay (Skarsgard) seems to have more of a stiff upper lip and has adapted better to ci-

vilian life. That doesn’t give Skarsgard much to do until his character meets a sudden, perplexingly tragic fate. That plot development, which isn’t in Lomax’s book, comes out of nowhere.

For her part, Kidman’s character exists mainly to galvanize her husband into finally addressing his demons. In this case, that means tracking down the middle-aged Nagase (Hiroyuki Sanada). While extreme, that’s something Lomax actually did.

Once they confront each other, the film ought to kick into high payoff mode, delivering the emotional punch we’ve been conditioned to expect from similar films. Whether that payoff is one of vengeance or forgiveness doesn’t really matter. What matters is that the emotional transaction be raw and honest.

In the end, Firth’s Lomax is less messy than safe. The ever-so-slightly hammy climax of “The Railway Man” feels true enough. But it also comes across as slightly overdone, like a dish you know is good for you but has lost some of its flavor in the cooking.

• “The Railway Man” received twoand-a-half stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains images of violence and torture. It runs 108 minutes.

She’s overstimulated and hooked on the adrenaline rush she gets from channel surfing from one tragedy, outrage and horror to the next. While this may not technically be a disease, it IS exhausting and depressing.

When the same thing started happening to me, I fixed it by turning off the news and going “cold turkey.” After a four-day

news blackout, I felt like my buoyant self again. Now I ration my exposure. Please share this with your girlfriend because it’s what I’m recommending for her.

Dear Abby: At a wedding, while shaking hands with a friend, I accidentally bumped another friend’s wine glass, staining his $180 shirt. The stain is a small one, on the lower portion and not very noticeable. Now the man insists I pay for the shirt.

Is there an etiquette rule on this issue? If you have the means to pay for a shirt that expensive, I don’t believe you should expect others to replace it. – Chris In Denver Dear Chris: Good manners dictate that you offer to pay for having the shirt cleaned. A good dry cleaner may be able to remove the stain, but it should be done as soon as possible. If the stain is permanent, then you should pay to replace the shirt. Ask yourself what’s more important – 180 bucks or your friendship?

Weigh side effects of drugs to reduce risk of breast cancer Dear Doctor K: My mother had breast cancer, so I believe I’m at higher risk than are most women.

Should I take medication to prevent breast cancer?

Dear Reader: Without more details, I can’t give you a personal recommendation. But I can tell you about drugs that are available to prevent breast cancer and who, in general, should consider taking them.

There are different types of breast cancer. The most common type is “estrogen receptor-positive” (ER-positive). This type of breast cancer needs the hormone estrogen to grow.

Well-designed studies have shown that two drugs – tamoxifen and raloxifene – reduce the risk of ER-positive breast cancer. (Tamoxifen appears to be more effective than raloxifene.) These drugs are known as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). (I’ve put more information about tamoxifen and raloxifene on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

So far, so good. The problem is that SERMs can cause side effects, some serious. These include increased risk of blood clots and hot flashes. Tamoxifen also increases the risk of uterine cancer and cataracts. The question is: For which women do the benefits of

Late last year, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) issued guidelines on the subject.

They recommended that physicians should offer to prescribe tamoxifen or raloxifene to women who are at high risk for ER-positive breast cancer and low risk for side effects.

Your doctor can estimate your breast cancer risk by taking several factors into account. These include your age, history of breast or ovarian cancer in a first-degree relative, and the age at which you first gave birth. Factors that decrease your risk for side effects include being younger than 50 years, having no risk factors for blood clots or stroke (such as being a smoker), and not having a uterus.

You can estimate your breast cancer risk with an online tool from the National Cancer Institute’s website: cancer.gov/bcrisktool. After you enter information about yourself, the tool gives you an estimate of your risk over

the next five years, and over a lifetime.

I am not aware of any similar tools to estimate your risks from taking either tamoxifen or raloxifene. As a general rule, doctors generally advise against taking these drugs if you: • Have had past serious blood clots requiring treatment; • Are taking blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin (Coumadin) or heparin; • Have high blood pressure, obesity or diabetes; • Are a smoker; • Are younger than 35 years old; • Are between 35 and 60 years old, and not at increased risk for breast cancer; • Are taking hormone replacement therapy or an aromatase inhibitor; • Have had any type of uterine cancer.

In addition, women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or who are currently breastfeeding, should generally avoid tamoxifen.

Dear Nameless: Since I don’t know you well enough to have a sense whether you can make the leap of character required to ignore the background whispers (if they do exist) it would be difficult to answer your question.

How much do you really love him? This is the question you must ask yourself.

If your feelings are genuine, his height is irrelevant. If they are not, you’ll always be tormented as long as you’re with him.

If you decide that you can’t just accept Greg as he is, do both him and yourself a favor and end the relationship. Sooner or later, you’ll find a guy you can look up to!

The most common reason for using fourth-suit-forcing is a desire to get to three no-trump, but the responder does not have a stopper in that fourth suit.

If East has king-queen-fourth, putting up the jack (or 10) is the winning play. However, if West began with a doubleton, it is 8 to 6 that he has honor-doubleton, not low-doubleton.

So, South should play low from his hand, which, of course, works here.
