Geneva event celebrates natural resources and native plants On the Web

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The blacktop in the blocked-off turnaround at Peck Farm Park in Geneva was filled with chalk pictures of rainbows, bluebirds, houses, trees, flowers and smiling suns – all done by children who came to celebrate Earth Day. It was a perfect welcome to the families who came to participate in Earth Day activities Saturday at Peck Farm Park, as the event featured children’s activities, recycling and a green business fair.

The cool, bright day brought out people of all ages, as Adam Stander of St. Charles came with his 22-month-old daughter, Leah.

Stander said it was not only to have fun, but to learn more about living green – such as not using toxic products and focusing on native plants.

“We have a big yard, and I’m looking for more native plant-type stuff,” Stander said. “I built an herb garden from an old wooden ladder with terra cotta pots.”

Among the green businesses was Earth’s Secret, where Glenna Armesy of Blackberry Township, near Sugar Grove, was selling makeup and skin care products she makes at her home business. These included mineral makeup, various colors of foundation, mascara and lipstick, as well as baby lotion and soap.

Another vendor, Nicholas Fuller of Batavia, was selling native plants – such as purple coneflower and shooting star from his Natural Communi-

ties Native Plants company.

Carols Palomares was promoting his Mighty Greens Farm products. Palomares said he grows micro and petite greens all year and never uses pesticides on 70 acres in Blackberry Township, near Elburn.

To the uninitiated, a sprout is a germinated seed while a micro-green is eaten when the plant sends up its first two leaves, called cotyledons. The very young plants have more nutrients than mature plants, Palomares said.

Mary Zaander’s cause was the Citizens’ Climate Lobby, an organization that is seeking, among other initiatives, a tax on carbon dioxide emissions. She was collecting signatures and passing out literature, especially about reversing climate change.

“We want to make it very expensive to pollute,” said Zaander, of Geneva. “We want to put a fee on carbon and have the money go right to families with no net gain for government.”

Bill Doeckel, vice president of the city’s Geneva Natural Resources Committee, which co-sponsored the event with the Geneva Park District, said Earth Day is an important way to educate the public about helping the planet.

“It’s a nice event for all ages,” Doeckel said.

Elburn OKs $16.4M St. Patrick’s Parade draws 18,500 budget for 2015-16

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – The village’s $16.4 million budget for 201516 was approved Monday night by a 5-1 vote.

After weeks of discussion, there was little debate before Monday’s vote. Trustee Ken Anderson, who previously spoke out against the unionizing of the village’s part-time police officers, said he voted no because of that situation.

He said he appreciated the work of the village administrators, however.

The budget showed revenues of $14.3 million. The village’s cash balance is set to go from $9.001 million as of May 1 to $6.897 million as of April 30, 2016. Doug Elder, the village’s finance director, pointed out that the village will be performing extensive sidewalk work downtown. There is a water main extension. And there also is the modernization of the village’s wastewater treatment plant.

“We’ve got some pretty major projects for Elburn in this budget,” Elder said.

Elder added that while salaries for part-time police officers are included in the budget, salaries for full-time police officers, as well as pub-

lic works employees, still are being negotiated. He said the budget would be revised when those figures are available.

Residents had an opportunity to speak at a public hearing regarding the budget at the beginning of the board meeting, but there were no public comments.

Also at the meeting: • John Nevenhoven, the public works director, said the village met its minimum on road salt during the winter, going over that by 20 to 30 tons, which Nevenhoven said was about a truckload.

In the first-quarter report for 2015, Nevenhoven stated that the village used 130.75 tons of salt, 777.7 gallons of fuel and logged 4,192 miles. He stated that workers had spent a total of 437.25 hours on plowing during the quarter.

• Tom Brennan, the village’s building commissioner, said there had been 37 building permits issued in the first quarter. That is up from 29 in the first quarter of 2014 and 25 in the first quarter of 2013.

He said there were 167 inspections performed in the first quarter. In 2014, there were 66 first-quarter inspections.

“We are off and running to a very good start,” Brennan said.

ST. CHARLES – Attendance at the St. Patrick’s Parade in St. Charles in March nearly doubled this year compared to 2014, according to the Downtown St. Charles Partnership on Monday.

There were about 18,500 spectators at the 16th annual parade, which was held March 14 on Main Street in downtown St. Charles, said Lynne

Schwartz, the partnership’s executive director.

The 15th annual St. Patrick’s Parade drew about 10,000 spectators in 2014, Schwartz said during a presentation Monday to the St. Charles City Council.

“I think all of this combined shows there’s great interest in the parade. … People are coming downtown and enjoying the experience,” Schwartz said to the council members.

There were 80 entries this

year – the maximum that can be staged – in the parade, which operated with about 100 volunteers, Schwartz said.

Schwartz also showed a three-minute video of highlights from the March 14 parade that included footage of the 10 winning entries. Multiple families and groups were on hand Monday as Schwartz distributed certificates to representatives from the winning entries with St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina.

Jim Martin ends St. Charles aldermanic run after 36 years

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Jim Martin’s history with the St. Charles City Council started in 1971, eight years before he was elected for the first time in 1979.

Martin attended his first council meeting on Nov. 1, 1971, to learn about the Cumberland Green housing project on the city’s east side.

“It was controversial at the time, and I was interested,” Martin said. “I haven’t missed a meeting since.”

Martin will bring a close to his perfect attendance as an alderman May 4, when his successor, Steve Gaugel, will be sworn in at a 7 p.m. City Council meeting.

“All good things have to come to an end” and “it’s time” are some of the phrases that Martin uses to describe his reason why he decided not to seek re-election in the 2015 consolidated election.

St. Charles grew in numerous ways under Martin’s time on the council.

He considers the biggest highlight to be a project that started before he was elected – the completion of the Red Gate Bridge.

There was discussion in 1973 about the necessity of the bridge, and construction finally began in August 2011, followed by a December 2012 opening. Traffic counts in 2014 for the Red Gate Bridge show that 10,570 vehicles use the bridge daily, according to the city of St. Charles.

“We love that bridge,” Martin said.

Other highlights for Martin include the opening of the former St. Charles Mall on the west side, the former Charlestowne Mall and developments such as the Hunt Club, Fox Chase, Red Gate and Royal Fox. Martin said the Royal Fox development was controversial and that the city almost lost it to West Chicago.

The key to the successful growth of St. Charles is the spirit of compromise, Martin said.

“We take the wishes of the developer and the wishes of the residents and try to find some balance that’s acceptable,” Martin said.

One of the things Martin would not compromise on was his unwavering stance on liquor licenses. Martin said he has voted “no” on every liquor license before the council for about 30 years.

Martin said the entire basis to his objections were based on problems of bar patrons drinking and driving.

“It just kills me to read in the paper where some kid or family had been wiped out by a drunk driver,” Martin said. “In my opinion, the one way to stop that is [to] vote against liquor licenses.”

Martin said he does not regret his “no” votes on the licenses and did not break from it even when he had good friends open restaurants in St. Charles that applied for liquor licenses.

None of the bar owners would willingly want bad things to happen inside or outside of their businesses, said Mark Hoffman, owner of Mark’s Second Street Tavern, 221 S. 2nd St., St. Charles.

Over time, the city’s bar scene as a whole received undue criticism, Hoffman said. Hoffman said he and Martin disagreed on most points, but he couldn’t fault the alderman for it.

“He did what he thought was right, and that’s what you want your public official to do,” Hoffman said.

“This guy is devoted to his city – he loves his city,” Rogina said of Martin.

In a later statement, Rogina wrote that Martin was a student of his community because he always poses questions and always provides answers.

Even though he won’t be serving on the council, Martin still will be involved in public service.

He has 42 years of perfect attendance with the St. Charles Noon Rotary Club, where he currently is the secretary and treasurer, and he also chairs the vocational scholarship committee on the St. Charles Rotary Foundation Board.

Although a controversial development was the reason for Martin’s first council meeting, he is unsure if that will be why he would attend future meetings as a resident.

“I may relay any comments that I have to my aldermen and let them be my spokesmen,” Martin said with a smile. “That’s their job.”

Trustee Mark Carroll said he liked a proposed logo that featured an egret.

“I would like something with nature, besides the river,” he said.

However, most of the trustees didn’t want to pursue that logo. They also didn’t want to see a former grain silo located

“It’s about looking ahead,” Trustee Laura Curtis said. “I don’t think it is something we should be hanging our hat on.”

Trustees also narrowed a list of possible mottos to two – “Crossroads On The Fox” and “A Community Connected.”

The village’s current motto, “The Village with a View to the Future,” is about 20 years

old, Bosco said.

Other mottos that were suggested included “The Crossing Of Community and Nature,” “Where Nature and Culture Connect,” and “A Village That Connects.” Curtis said she didn’t want a motto that was too wordy, such as the village’s current motto.

The new logo and motto would be put on the village’s welcome signs and website, Bosco said.

one is that arbitration history is against us. It’s taxpayers’ money, but do we make that gamble? ... The next step could boomerang against us.”

Second Ward Alderman Don Cummings said two people approached him last week and asked when does the city push back on union contracts.

“I like to be fair,” Cummings said. “When is the right time to push back? Maybe we’re there.”

Officer Brian Stolfe, the union president for the Geneva bargaining unit, said the contract was negotiated fairly.

“We had to give up things we didn’t want to,” Stolfe said.

“We gave things we’ve had for a long time to make it work. We negotiated it. We thought it was fair for both sides.”

Simonian, Cummings and 2nd Ward Alderman Richard Marks all voted against the contract.

GENEVA – Geneva aldermen Monday approved a new four-year police contract in a 7-3 split vote, but not before discussing it for almost an hour.

Fifth Ward Alderman Tom Simonian said after he reviewed the terms of the agreement, he would vote no. Simonian said from 2012 to 2015,

inflation was 3.9 percent, but officer pay went up 11.5 percent.

The new contract is from May 1 to April 30, 2019, with raises of 2.25 percent in the first year, 2.5 percent in the next two years and 2.75 percent in the final year.

Various reasons – including birth defects and a comfort around humans – have made these animals unreleasable, education director Donna Tate said.

Toby, for example, likely was someone’s pet, as he was found in an alley in Aurora and is friendly around humans, she said.

“He would be easy pickings,” Tate said. “He’s used to being catered to.”

Harper facing domestic battery charges

Neither Harper nor his attorney returned repeated voicemail messages seeking comment.

Kramer said he would not comment on the charges against Harper, nor on his long association with his former campaign manager.

“Let the judicial system work its way out,” said Kramer, a Geneva resident.

Kramer said Harper was his employer at the Drive Home Safe Driving School in Geneva at the time and just wanted to help him out on the campaign trail. Harper stood with Kramer when Kramer first announced his candidacy May 2013.

“I have known Don Kramer since high school. He has been a leader ever since we both played football for Batavia Bulldogs,” Harper had said then. “Don has prepared himself to be sheriff his whole life.”

On election night Nov. 4, Kramer thanked and praised Harper for helping him win the election for sheriff over opponent Willie Mayes. Harper also stood with Kramer at his swearing-in ceremony Dec. 1.

The terms of Harper’s bond required him to turn in his firearms owner’s identification card, his service weapon and other weapons to the Sugar Grove police. Harper also worked as a part-time officer for Campton Hills and the Kane County Forest Preserve Police.

As a result of the charges, Harper turned in his badge and

went on unpaid leave, Campton Hills Police Chief Daniel Hoffman said. Harper worked one day a week at his department, he said.

Kane County Forest Preserve Director of Public Safety Michael Gilloffo said Harper usually worked there a couple days a month until he was charged.

“He is on voluntary leave of absence without pay,” Gilloffo said.

Harper has an active order of protection against him, filed Feb. 18, 2014, by his wife of 13 years, who since has moved from their Sugar Grove home, court records show.

Harper and his wife both filed for divorce Feb. 19, 2014.

According to court records, a trial on the divorce petition is scheduled June 22.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The man who served as campaign manager for Kane County Sheriff Donald Kramer’s successful election Nov. 4 is facing a jury trial this month on two misdemeanor charges of domestic battery, court records show.

Dennis Harper, 55, a retired Batavia police officer and former Batavia High School classmate of Kramer’s, was charged Feb. 27, 2014, in connection

with an incident involving his wife Feb. 16, 2014, at their home in Sugar Grove.

Harper is free after posting $50 bail or 10 percent of a $500 bond, court records show. He is to appear in court Thursday for a pre-trial hearing before the jury trial is scheduled to begin April 28, court records show.

Harper’s Dennis Harper attorney filed court papers asserting that a video taken January 2014 shows his wife arguing with her son. In it, she threatens to allege domestic battery, showing “a false outcry, and then carries through with it” in the current charges against her husband.

Officials seek seizure of dogs from woman

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Authorities are trying to seize dogs from a Batavia woman charged with animal cruelty.

Julie Brungard-Giordano, 47, of the 200 block of North Island Avenue, Batavia, has been charged with four counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, a Class 4 felony, and four counts of cruelty to animals, a Class A misdemeanor.

Batavia police found Brungard-Giordano’s dogs inside a van on April 2 in a parking lot just north of the Batavia Police Department at 100 N. Island Ave. The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office recently filed court documents requesting that the court enter

a permanent order forfeiting the five dogs to an animal shelter. Brungard-Giordano remained in the Kane County jail Monday afternoon on a $30,000 bond.

Her bond had been reduced from $35,000.

Kane County Animal Control took the remaining six dogs to an animal hospital in Aurora for treatment. One of the female dogs died while en route to the animal hospital.

According to court documents, she believes her daughter has “many mental health issues,” and has called her once or twice a day since she was arrested. Court documents state that Sharon Brungard has had two previous orders of protection against Brungard-Giordano, and that she is afraid of what Brungard-Giordano might do after she is released from jail.

In new millennium, no jobs open for millennials

By MATTHEW WINKLER Bloomberg News Young people bounce back from adversity faster than their elders, right?

Not when it comes to American jobs.

Six years after the U.S. economy began expanding from the worst recession since the Great Depression, people ages 25 to 34 are having a harder time finding jobs than other workers.

This is the new normal.

Men and women at the peak of their physical and mental development are increasingly frustrated in the job market precisely at the point when they are poised to launch careers and start families.

Since the new century’s first

recession in 2001, the unemployment rate for these young Americans has stayed higher than the rate of overall unemployment, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

What’s most striking is that the gap is wider now than it was in 2009, in the depths of the financial crisis. That’s an indication that the economic recovery hasn’t helped younger workers as much as it did after 20th-century slumps, Bloomberg data show.

Take the 1982 recession. At first, it hit 25- to 34-year-old workers hard. Unemployment for that group surged 2.37 percentage points to 9.66 percent in December 1983. The overall rate rose less – 1.98 percentage points – and to a lower level of 9.6 percent.

Then things turned around for the 25- to 34-year-olds.

By December 1984, the year President Ronald Reagan was re-elected, unemployment among those younger workers had fallen to 7.24 percent, below the overall unemployment rate of 7.51.

The same thing happened after the 1992 recession.

Younger workers were hit hardest in the two years after December 1990 – and then caught up to everyone else a year later. The younger group’s unemployment rate would remain lower for the rest of the decade.

It wasn’t until December 2002 that the unemployment rate of 25- to 34-year-olds (5.87 percent) rose above the overall unemployment rate (5.78

percent) and stayed there. By 2009, the difference widened to half a percentage point, 9.88 percent compared with 9.28 percent.

There probably is no single cause for this stubborn disparity. Economists say it is derived from the growing percentage of people older than 55 who aren’t retiring, the displacement of jobs caused by computers, limited mobility and a lack of the types of skills that employers are seeking.

Whatever the cause, there is no sign this chronic feature of 21st century America is ending. Other age groups are gaining in the labor market.

Since 2010, for example, people between the ages of 35 and 44 looking for a job have out-

performed the entire population of job seekers, according to Bloomberg data. This group is doing even better than it did in the 20th century when, as with those ages 55 and older, any gap with the U.S. unemployment rate collapsed during the boom years.

Combine this with the knowledge that Americans reaching what was once considered retirement age are now becoming a bigger percentage of the workforce, and 25- to 34-year-olds may face even less opportunity.

That bleak scenario helps explain why six years into the economy’s uneven recovery from the financial crisis, the Federal Reserve is wise to remain cautious about raising interest rates.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Tightening our belts To the Editor: The recent announcements of proposed austerity, and the ensuing pronouncements of gloom and doom if those necessary curtailments occur, give me pause to reflect on our society today. The attitude of many seems to one of having their cake and eating, too. The overall denial of facts, of those facts which are not successfully suppressed, is merely wishful thinking on the part of those who remain in their daily fantasy.

Whatever the reasons for the failure of this State of Illinois to serve all of its citizens fairly and responsibly, we are in a terrific slide down the hill to bankruptcy. There is no denying that. Naturally, there is a scramble to point fingers; it’s the human way for today’s elite and powerful. None of this, however, solves the problem for those who opine that the only way out of bankruptcy is to spend our way out. This is so foolish as to beggar one’s faith in our leadership. We have for decades slowly increased the load on the taxpayers of this once-great state, and the only way to pull on the reins of this runaway horse is to do it gently and steadily, lest we take a fatal spill. Yet when a leader steps

forward and grabs those reins and states that they must be pulled, the translation of such tugging is to say that expenditures must be cut. When that happens, those foolish spenders who want to forever feed at the trough of Illinois’ largess immediately say “Not in my back yard” or “Let Mikey do it.”

We all must pay the price, and this taxpayer is more than willing to pay his.

I’ve been told many times that one cannot live on Social Security. Yet I have been retired now for some 10 years, and I do live, and thrive, on Social Security alone. Surely, I have an IRA, but apart from the yearly RMD, that’s all I have ever taken from it.

Living within my means has always been important to me, and it will continue to be important. We can continue to live beyond those means, up and until the supporting foundation suddenly collapses. No one owes us anything, and there is no free lunch.

Someone always has to pay; period.

So I say here: Do what you’ve gotta do Mr. Lauzen, and Mr. Rauner. This senior citizen will do his part.

The Saints were back in action Monday and used an offensive outburst in the second inning to beat Batavia, 157, to stay unbeaten in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play.

That second inning consisted of eight runs on six hits, allowing East to jump out to an early lead en route to its fifth straight win.

“We were able to string a bunch of hits together today,” Saints coach Kelly Horan said. “That’s what you have to do to be successful. Everyone, one through nine, has to contribute in some way, and we did that today.”

nings, allowing five runs (four earned) and striking out two. Although the numbers didn’t pop out at first glance, Horan thought Hall got into a groove after working in and out of trouble in the first few innings.

“We had a jam-packed week, so I kind of said it was all right if today was a little bit of a struggle for her,” Horan said. “She got into a nice rhythm late, which was good because we have a couple more big conference games this week. It’s good to see her fight through some adversity because we are going to need her.”

The Saints will host Waubonsie Valley today and St. Charles North on Wednesday.

Batavia (8-6, 3-3) fought back a few times offensively after the Saints rallied, but East simply had too much for the Bulldogs.

have to play close to perfect to come away with a win, and the errors ended up hurting.

“You can’t give a good team like that extra outs,” Castellanos said. “We did some things well today, but you have to limit your mistakes. They capitalized every time we made an error or had a lapse defensively, and you can’t do that against these guys.”

Batavia’s seven runs were the second most scored against East this season, with the only higher total coming in East’s only loss of the season, 11-3, to Fremd.

The Saints had 18 hits, which was one of their high totals of the season, and the 15 runs were the second most this season.

Jordan Hieber and Kelly Rinker each had three hits for the Saints.

Jena Bendoraitis led the Bulldogs with three hits, while Toni Galas scored three runs.

Guffey left Geneva’s Ultimate Frisbee club to compete in tennis, and also is a member of the school’s Key Club.

For Guffey, further reinforcement arrived in the fall thanks to in-class feedback from his physical education teacher, Dave Carli.

“It was kind of nice just to be told that you could go out there and probably play a varsity sport without really having much experience,” Guffey said.

Carli shared his scouting report with both Guffey and Vikings coach Zach Evans, who was entering his first season as head of the program after previously serving as an assistant. “[Carli] said, ‘Hey, you should go talk to this kid and see if he wants to come out and play tennis for you, because he’s pretty good,’ ” Evans said.

“I never really knew about him until he showed up for practice this year. He knows the game. I don’t know how long he’s been playing, but he looks pretty good.”

Her no-doubt-about-it visit to St. Louis University, the school with that 20th century charm doll nickname, made it so for the Batavia girls basketball junior standout, who verbally committed over the weekend.

“I didn’t know going into the trip that I was going to be committing,” Frazier said.

“SLU had always been my No. 1 choice as far as a list, but I wasn’t sure If I was ready to make a decision. Definitely getting to hang out with the team a lot and seeing what great kids

they were, I could see myself playing with them. And the coaching staff, it felt like a family. They were great people and you could tell they cared.”

A 6-foot-2 junior forward post who averaged 22.1 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocks a game in 2014-15, FraHannah Frazier zier received nine other NCAA Division I offers.

Miami (Ohio), Belmont and DePaul followed St. Louis on her personal list. Ultimately, SLU won out for several reasons, including the familial feeling and the manageable driving distance for her parents, Jeff and Erin, to watch Billikens home games.

St. Louis also boasts a longstanding academic reputation, which certainly befits Frazier, ranked No. 1 in her class with a 4.375 grade-point average.

“It’s always been a big focus just to work hard on school and not take it for granted,” Frazier said.

Frazier eclipsed 1,000 career points during a Dec. 20 game, just one highlight from a season that eventually netted her a nod as a Class 4A Associated Press all-state second teamer.

About six weeks later, Billikens associate head coach Mike Geary scouted Frazier during a victory against Larkin in which she felt she didn’t show the best of her versatile skill set.

“It was probably not one of my best games,” Frazier said. “I struggled in the first half of that

game. But it was cool that the coach (Lisa Stone) really didn’t pick me for that. They kind of saw through that.”

In late February, Frazier took her first glimpse at campus during an unofficial visit, and was immediately intrigued.

Frazier will continue to hone her game for the Midwest Elite AAU program. She developed a stronger outside shot entering her junior season, and Batavia coach Kevin Jensen envisions Frazier as a “stretch four,” a power forward who can keep defenders honest with her perimeter game.

“There’s many 6-2 girls in high school that can kind of labor to get up the floor,” Jensen said. “I think that part of her game also made her stand out.

She was so very quick and athletic for someone of that size.”

He completed the 110-meter hurdles in 14.56 seconds, establishing a boys meet record, won the 300 hurdles in 39.01 and teamed with victorious relays in the 4x100 (43.70) and 4x400 (3:27.62).

Earlier last week, Ege brought equal precision when he represented BC well away from home – and his spikes – at a Worldwide Youth Science and Engineering competition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“A lot of the other kids that are on it, they don’t really do athletics,” Ege said. “They can get super freaked out and nervous, so it definitely helps that I’m used to the stress of track and stuff. I don’t really get as worked up as others.”

Ege, whose father, Raimund, teaches computer science at Northern Illinois, signed

a national letter of intent at Stanford on Thursday, and ranks in the top 10 of a graduating class of about 280.

His WYSE competition coincided with a Rockets meet at Oregon, and the commute home from Champaign afforded Ege a longer rest than he’s accustomed to at meets.

With the state series looming in about a month, expect Ege to compete in four events regularly.

“It works,” he said. “I mean, I get enough of a break between the 300s and 4x4, which is the most important.

“I’m pretty good at all of them, so I like being in them and like being able to get some points for us.”

When’s he’s not on the track, exercising his mind can provide equal exhilaration.

“He’s a pretty smart kid.

He’s pretty bright. … I’m not sure if he’s going into math or science, but he’s pretty good at it,” Central coach Mike Schmidt said.

Ege, who also is taking four Advanced Placement courses,

said he is leaning toward studying computer science.

That’s senior to freshman to senior to sophomore to eclipse a 14-year-old record by 0.09 seconds.

“Our junior and senior class has been strong the last few years, and now with the depth that our freshmen and sophomores bring, it just makes for a real nice team,” Bulldogs coach Justin Allison said.

Batavia proved as much elsewhere in the 16-team event, including in the 1,600

and 3,200, where junior Dakota Roman (5:15.39) and freshman Emma Stephens (11:11.45) emerged as respective winners.

DePaul-bound senior Miranda Rea was runner-up in both races, finishing the 1,600 in 5:19.53 and the 3,200 in 11:15.88.

“We feel good,” Allison said.

“Everyone’s staying healthy, knock on wood, and the pieces are falling into place. We’re moving some people around and giving some varsity time to freshmen who have earned it.”

Mixing things up has kept Batavia clicking. The 4x200 relay of seniors Hailey Plata, Ross and Jonke – plus the anchor, Ortiz – finished in 1:45.82 on Saturday. That clocking trailed champion Rich South by four-hundreths of a second and was in the neighborhood of the school record of 1:44.79, established in 2006.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Odd, unidentified or unusual collectibles make every antiques show and shop more fun. How do you use a dog treadmill? Did the dealer say it was an elephant catcher? Is that strange crock really an 1850 chicken feeder? And what is the use for an oversized cardboard top hat covered in wallpaper? Don Olson, a Rochester, N.Y., folk-art dealer, just sold an early 19th-century top hat. The 8-inchhigh hat seemed a bit large to wear. It was well-made with yellow-and-green wallpaper that pictured leaves. The pattern was carefully matched. The inside was lined with newspaper, dated 1814, that reported on an auction of cannons and a nominee for Governor. The hat was in excellent condition. It didn’t seem to have been worn much. Old wallpaper-covered hatboxes are valued antiques and many are in museum collections. But this is the first hat we’ve seen. It’s 200 years old and in great condition. Well-made unique folk

There could be a valuable treasure or an important piece of forgotten history. *** Q: I have a thimble that reads “Massasoit Coffee.” There is a small star after the word “coffee.” Can you tell me something about collecting thimbles and which ones are considered of more value?

A: Massasoit Coffee was produced

by Chas. E. Brown & Co. of Springfield, Mass., in the early 1900s. Thimbles have been made for more than 1,000 years and are a popular collectible today. Thimbles by known makers sell for the most money.

Some collectors specialize in a particular type of thimble, like advertising, commemorative, political, souvenir, floral, scenic, cities or states, or by material.

Thimbles have been made in aluminum, brass, gold, pewter, plastic, porcelain, silver, wood and other materials. Some have a maker’s mark on the band or inside the cap. Thimbles made in the late 19th century or later may be marked with the size. Advertising thimbles were made beginning in the 1800s. Early advertising thimbles were made of brass, silver or aluminum. Later, they were made of plastic.

Ever see an antique top hat covered with old wallpaper? This 8-inch-high top hat is lined with an 1814 newspaper that mentions the nominee for governor of Massachusetts. Perhaps it was worn at a political party.

Q: I have an old French country-style chair with the label “Barnard & Simonds Co., Grand Rapids, Mich.” It’s fruitwood with a caned back and padded seat. I’m tempted to refinish it, but I’m told that to keep value in a piece of furniture you shouldn’t. Can you help me decide by telling me about the company and the value of the chair?

A: Barnard & Simonds Co. was founded in Rochester, N.Y. in 1898. The company made reproductions of Americanand English country-style upholstered furniture and novelties. In 1959, it moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., where it merged with Michigan Furniture Shops and Stratford Shops. The company was bought by Baker Furniture in 1967 and the Barnard & Simonds name was discontinued by 1971. Your chair probably was made in the 1960s and is worth about $50, so have

ADVICE Churchgoers have strong views on claiming seats Schools should not use Dear Abby: May I comment on your response to “Got Here First in Pennsylvania” (Jan. 7), who asked whether someone sitting at the end of a church pew should move if someone comes and says it’s his or her “favorite seat”?

There are many reasons why people remain sitting at the end of a pew: an allergy to perfumes can be overwhelming if you’re sitting in the middle of a row; claustrophobia; weak bladder; physical limitations; the need for more leg room; and the need to use the armrest to stand up and sit down.

The early bird DOES get the worm and shouldn’t be expected to give it to latecomers. Likewise, possession is nine-tenths of the law.

If people have a favorite seat, they should arrive early to ensure they’ll get it. That’s what we do.

And when someone wants to sit in the same pew, we smile, step aside

When sitting at the end of the pew, I can easily step into the aisle to let people in and out. I also take a medication that causes me to use the restroom often and on short notice.

Benefits of low-dose aspirin outweigh its risks Dear Doctor K: I had a heart attack several years ago. I have been taking low-dose aspirin ever since to prevent a second one. Do I need to worry about bleeding risks?

Dear Reader: Every medicine contains risks as well as benefits.

The question with any medicine is: Do the benefits outweigh the risks?

Aspirin helps prevent repeat heart attacks in two ways. A heart attack occurs when the flow of blood through one of the heart’s arteries is blocked. Without a blood supply, the part of the heart that gets its blood from that artery dies. Most such sudden blockages begin when a cholesterol-filled plaque of atherosclerosis ruptures. Plaques rupture when there is inflammation inside them.

When a plaque ruptures, it spills cholesterol into the blood.

This causes platelets in the blood to clump together and form a blood clot. The clot blocks the flow of blood. Aspirin quiets the inflammation within plaques that leads to rupture. Aspirin also prevents platelets in the blood from clumping together and forming clots.

Dozens of studies involving tens of thousands of people have

For one, it does increase the risk of minor bleeding. Cuts may bleed a little longer than usual. Bruises, which happen when blood leaks out of small vessels after an injury, may also be more noticeable.

Aspirin also hinders helpful substances that protect the delicate lining of the stomach.

This can lead to stomach upset or bleeding in the stomach and intestines. As a result, a person can become anemic. More serious bleeding can lead to black, tarry stools. In rare cases, you may vomit blood.

For both men and women, gastrointestinal bleeding and hemorrhagic (bleeding) stroke are the main risks of aspirin.

That’s why the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends low-dose, rather than regular-strength, aspirin to prevent a repeat heart attack. Low-dose aspirin seems to work just as well as higher doses, with fewer

bleeding problems.

The risk of bleeding complications rises with age. Aspirin-induced bleeding is also more likely to occur in people who have a history of uncontrolled high blood pressure, ulcers or bleeding problems.

The risk is also higher in people who regularly take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), or the blood thinner warfarin (Coumadin). If you fall into any of these categories, talk to your doctor. Together, you can weigh the risks and benefits of low-dose aspirin for you.

In theory, taking aspirin with a protective coating (enteric-coated aspirin) should help avoid ulcers and other stomach-related side effects. However, I don’t think the evidence for this is very strong.

I’ve never had a heart attack, but I do have atherosclerosis of the arteries of my heart. I take low-dose aspirin every day. That’s because I am sure the benefits outweigh the risks for me.

physical punishment Dr. Wallace: My children’s school has a policy that I am unhappy about. I am a noon supervisor in one of the local schools here, and the students are out of control.

They are rude and loud and do not respond to authority. I spoke to the principal, and I suggested that it was time that these students should be paddled because they are continuing to break the rules. I was shocked when he said that it is against the school district policy to allow any sort of physical punishment.

I know you were a school administrator, and I would like your thoughts about paddling unruly students when they are blatantly disobeying the rules. I have talked with many of the parents, and they are tired of the disruptions and would support paddling unruly students. – Parent, Detroit, Michigan.

Dear Parent: Schools should not engage in using physical punishment as a form of discipline. Those parents with unruly students should be permitted to pick up their students at school, take them home and provide any form of punishment that will be effective and legal.

Speaking as a former high school administrator, I am convinced that the majority of problem students come from homes with parents who are overly lenient in handing out proper discipline. Much too often, some parents are lax in parental responsibilities and leave it up to the schools to do the parents’ job.

If the teen feels comfortable having both parents present during the discussion, then both parents should take part. But if the teen feels uncomfortable with both parents present, then a single parent (mom for girls, dad for boys) is the best choice.

Teens who feel uncomfortable when discussing sex with a parent or parents will not feel free to ask delicate, but important, questions.

That applies to bridge players, whose minute-by-minute mental conduct produces the power to solve a problem correctly. This week we are looking at deals in which working out hand shapes will shape the results.

In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump. West leads the diamond two. How should East plan the defense?

The bidding had a few interesting aspects. First, when North responded one spade, South, with a singleton spade, correctly rebid two clubs, not three clubs. Then North decided to support hearts, knowing that two honors doubleton would be as good as three low cards. But he was tempted to rebid two spades, given his six-card suit.

Then South, when he continued with two no-trump, showed some 16 or 17 high-card points, enough to think about game even though North was limited to nine points.

North, with a near maximum, raised to game.

East has to think about declarer’s hand shape. South showed five hearts and four clubs in the bidding, and West’s diamond-two lead, indicating a four-card suit, tells East that South started with three diamonds. So declarer’s distribution must be 1-5-3-4.

East’s best chance is to win with his diamond ace and immediately shift to the spade four.

Bingo! Four spade tricks later, the defenders will be happy.
