Visitors flock to Peck Farm Park for green-themed event

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The blacktop in the blocked-off turnaround at Peck Farm Park in Geneva was filled with chalk pictures of rainbows, bluebirds, houses, trees, flowers and smiling suns – all done by children who came to celebrate Earth Day. It was a perfect welcome to the families who came to participate in Earth Day activities Saturday at Peck Farm Park, as the event featured children’s activities, recycling and a green business fair.

The cool, bright day brought out people of all ages, as Adam Stander of St. Charles came with his 22-month-old daughter, Leah.

Stander said it was not only to have fun, but to learn more about living green – such as not using toxic products and focusing on native plants.

“We have a big yard, and I’m looking for more native plant-type stuff,” Stander said. “I built an herb garden from an old wooden ladder with terra cotta pots.”

Among the green businesses was Earth’s Secret, where Glenna Armesy of Blackberry Township near Sugar Grove was selling makeup and skin care products she makes at her home business.

These included mineral makeup, various colors of foundation, mascara and lipstick, as well as baby lotion and soap.

“I was an herbalist for 30 years. I did aromatherapy for 20 years, and I have my own skin care products for the last 10,” Armesy said. “We’ve been on the market for four years.”

Mary Ellen Thielemann of Elgin was quite taken with the idea of skin care products made without artificial colors or dyes or toxins and made without animal testing. She bought a handful of mascara tubes in colors from blue to

“She is a vegan and only buys cruelty-free products,” Thielemann said.

Another vendor, Nicholas Fuller of Batavia, was selling native plants – such as purple coneflower and shooting star from his Natural Communities Native Plants company.

Carols Palomares was promoting his Mighty Greens Farm products. Palomares said he grows micro and petite greens all year and never uses pesticides on 70 acres in Blackberry Township near Elburn.

To the uninitiated, a sprout is a germinated seed while a micro-green could be eaten when the plant sends up its first two leaves, called cotyle-

dons. The very young plants have more nutrients than mature plants, Palomares said.

Mary Zaander’s cause was the Citizens’ Climate Lobby, an organization that is seeking, among other initiatives, a tax on carbon dioxide emissions. She was collecting signatures and passing out literature, especially about reversing climate change.

“We want to make it very expensive to pollute,” said Zaander, of Geneva. “We want to put a fee on carbon and have the money go right to families with no net gain for government.”

Bill Doeckel, vice president of the city’s Geneva Natural Resources Committee, which co-sponsored the event with the Geneva Park District, said Earth Day is an important way to educate the public about helping the planet.

“It’s a nice event for all ages,” Doeckel said.

Explaining that bread can act as a sponge in Lucy’s throat, Zachary fed her apple slices as she waded in a kiddie pool.

“Corn’s her favorite, though,” he said, noting the goose also eats melons, carrots, grapes and greens.

In addition to paper products and dry pet food, the wildlife center’s spring wish list includes unflavored Pedialyte, unscented and lotion-free tissues, baby blankets, wild bird seed, unscented laundry soap and unscented bleach.

Donations are always welcome, Kirk said, noting the wildlife center relies entirely on donations and grants.

ELBURN – The stories of Zihna, a red-tailed hawk, Wooka, a yellow-shafted northern flicker, and Toby, a box turtle, aren’t those the Fox Valley Wildlife Center hopes for the animals it helps.

Various reasons – including birth defects and a comfort around humans – have made these animals unreleasable, education director Donna Tate said.

Toby, for example, was likely someone’s pet, as he was found in an alley in Aurora and is friendly around humans, she said.

“He would be easy pickings,” Tate said. “He’s used to being catered to.”

The Fox Valley Wildlife Center takes in orphaned and injured animals – such as squirrels, cottontail rabbits, ducklings, goslings, opossums, raccoons and birds of prey – and cares for them with the goal of releasing them into the wild, wildlife specialist Laura Kirk said.

The nonprofit organization, which is the only one of its kind in Kane County, is approaching its busy season, she said. She said most of the 2,800 animals it will help this year will arrive between late spring and early fall.

As part of the organization’s annual wild baby shower, visitors Sunday afternoon brought such gifts as paper towels and dry pet food to help the wildlife center get through the influx of orphaned and injured creatures.

The four-hour event featured games, crafts, a bake sale and live animals, including those the wildlife center uses for educational purposes.

Geneva girls, Burlington Central boys win

By THOMAS KUEBEL editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Geneva’s Mike VanDeveer track invitational was filled with competitive races for both the boys and girls events.

The girls meet was won by the host Vikings, while Burlington Central cruised through their second of backto-back weekend meets in the Tri-Cities to win the boys side.

It was the 24th annual invitational but the first memorial for VanDeveer, who passed away this winter. There was a moment of silence held in his honor to begin the meet.

From there, St. Charles North’s Hannah Schilb stole the show. Schilb got off to a great start to the meet by

winning the triple jump with a distance of 36 feet, 10 inches, which was three feet further than the runner-up. The junior followed up her meet record jump in the triple with a win in the long jump, eclipsing the 17-foot mark but finishing just 2½ inches shy of her second meet record.

“If I wasn’t behind the board, that would have been an 18 foot jump so I’m really upset because that would have been a [personal record]. That would have been huge for me but I don’t know I guess I was just on today,” Schilb said.

However, Schilb’s effort wasn’t enough to lift the North Stars to the championship.

The Vikings sustained a balanced effort both on the track and in the field until

breaking through for a big 1-2-3 finish in the 400 meters and had three of the top four finishes in high jump to win the meet.

“A lot of girls were stepping up today, which is good to see on our home track for senior recognition day. It was definitely very pleasing from a coaches perspective,” Geneva coach Peter Raak said. “Obviously you want to be ready for the big meets at the end of the season [conference, sectionals, and state], but you always want to do well on your home track. Your comfortable here, your family is here, and your friends are here.”

Veronica Ramming won discus for the Vikings while also placing in the shot put and high jump. It was an in-

teresting combination of events which all point toward a transition to the heptathlon when she continues her college career at North Central next fall.

Senior Janie McCloughan was part of Geneva’s winning 4x400 and second place 4x200 while also finishing second in the 300-meter hurdles. The Vikings also won the 4x100, 100 (Colette Malovany) and 3,200 (McKenzie Altmeyer).

Lucas Ege was once again must-see track and field for the Rockets. The senior sprinter/hurdler won all four of his races breaking Dan Hagberg’s record in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.56.

Hagberg was a 2008 graduate of Burlington Central and someone that Ege has been in

touch with throughout his career as a Rocket.

“I was really surprised to beat his record. His overall record for our school is a 13.9 so if I could get that, it would be insane,” Ege said.

The Rockets also received contributions in the field events, which scored 30 of the team’s 117 points.

Other notable finishes included St. Charles North’s Josh Pelock meet record in the pole vault and Chris Suda who was the only finisher under the two-minute mark in the 800. For Geneva, Michael Deamantopulos won the 3200 in under 10 minutes while Ryan Skibinski debuted his season finishing second in the 100 and 4x400, and fourth in the 200.

James Prisco went six innings on the mound for the Vikings, never letting a Kaneland runner get past second base. It was the lefthander’s first win of the season.

“I trusted my pitches and pounded ahead, trying to get that first strike,” Prisco said.

“That is what Coach Hahn preaches: Always getting ahead and trust your stuff.”

Porretto closed out the game for the Vikings, fanning all three Kaneland hitters he faced.

Kaneland pitcher Steven Limbrunner allowed only one run through five innings. He was lifted after Wassel’s RBI single in the sixth.

Darling rock solid in Game 3

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – All the talk entering Game 3 was about the goaltender situation, and for good reason. It’s not every spring a Stanley Cup-winning goaltender gets benched for a 26-year-old rookie.

But lost in the controversy and the craziness surrounding the Blackhawks’ Game 2 loss was the fact that goaltending was hardly their biggest problem. At least, it wasn’t their only one. There are 18 other guys on the ice over the course of the game.

And Sunday, they pretty much all showed up.

The Hawks got their first total team effort Sunday in a 4-2 victory over the Nashville Predators, taking a 2-1 series lead. Scott Darling made 35 saves and likely earned himself another start ahead

of Corey Crawford in Tuesday’s Game 4, but most encouraging was how the Hawks, from top to bottom, outplayed the depleted Predators, who sorely missed the defensive presence of injured stars Shea Weber and Mike Fisher.

The top trio of Brandon Saad, Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa was a force, combining for two goals and three assists. The new-look fourth line of Andrew Desjardins, Marcus Kruger and Andrew Shaw wreaked havoc, with Desjardins potting a goal and helping to create another.

The forecheck was aggressive and effective, the back pressure was relentless and disruptive.

And although the Hawks’ goalies have garnered most of the attention, it’s Nashville’s all-world Pekka Rinne (26 saves) who is looking uncom-

fortable and underwhelming in net.

“It was a huge team effort,” Darling said. “They hardly had any Grade-A scoring opportunities. The D-corps played unbelievable, and I can’t thank them enough.”

With and without the puck, the Hawks looked little like the team that floundered in a 6-2 Game 2 loss in Nashville.

And if it seems like they play better in front of Darling, perhaps smarter and more protective, they insist it’s only a coincidence, and something they’d very much like to remedy.

“We try to play the same way,” said Hossa, who had two assists and nearly had a few goals in a vintage performance. “Obviously, we weren’t good enough in front of the Crow, and we knew it.

We didn’t help him out, and I think we learned from that.”

GENEVA – A.J. Hostman hit a ball to deep short that Kaneland shortstop River Dunne made a diving play on.

Dunne jumped up and fired to first, but Hostman just beat the throw to plate a run and extend the sixth inning.

Nicholas Porretto made sure to capitalize, hitting a three-run double to follow Hostman and break open an early pitchers’ duel Saturday afternoon as the Vikings topped Kaneland, 7-0.

The Vikings sent 11 men to the plate in the sixth, with the big blow coming from Porretto. That hit never would have been possible without Hostman keeping the inning alive with his hustle play.

“I think that was the play of the game. It was bang-bang at first base,” Geneva coach Matt Hahn said. “If he gets thrown out, it’s 2-0 going into the top of the seventh. In-

stead, we are able to explode the inning open and be able to have a comfortable lead in the seventh, instead of biting our nails in the seventh.”

Geneva shortstop Jack Wassel played a key role in the Vikings’ first two runs. He drove in Jason Croci with a line out to center in the bottom of the first. Croci led the inning off with a double and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Garrett Davis “We found different ways to score our runs,” Hahn said.

“In the first, we got the double, sacrificed him over, sacrificed him in.”

In the sixth, Wassel drove in the first run of the inning, scoring Justin Hasegawa, with a single.

“Trying to get that guy in with one out, I was just looking to get the bat on the ball,” Wassel said.

Wassel said once things got going in the sixth, success got contagious.

Dear Abby: Recently my 11-year-old son, “Jackson,” was at a neighbor’s house playing with another boy a few years younger. The boy told my son he plays with him only because his parents make him, and he said he isn’t Jackson’s friend and never wanted to be.

Illinois Dear Mama Bear: Tell the parents what happened if they ask again for Jackson to come over. While children say all kinds of things in the heat of the moment, it would be better for your son if you found some other activities for him, at least for a while.

While it’s understandable your neighbor’s son may resent being forced to play with Jackson, it is equally understandable Jackson might be reluctant at this point to have anything more to do with him. Don’t push it.

Dear Abby: My fiancée and I are in a long-distance military relationship. We have discussed eloping to Las Vegas so I can move with him.

My mother isn’t enthusiastic about it. She would like to be there for my wedding, but my fiancée comes from a large family. Eloping would be our way of not excluding anyone.

I feel guilty for wanting this to be just the two of us.

Dear Abby: I have known “Dean” for 10 years. We have been living together for two.

Since the beginning, he has struggled with depression, anxiety and anger issues.

Occasionally he has explosive episodes where he’ll throw things and punch or kick inanimate objects.

Recently things escalated.

He was angry with himself after getting angry with me for disturbing his “process” while making dinner, and he threw a potted plant across the room.

I’m not an idiot. I know these are serious issues.

Every friend or family member of mine who knows him believes he’s a good guy deep down. But they all tell me to leave him. I talked with him after the incident. He called a therapist, set up an appointment and has promised he won’t drink anymore.

I’m struggling with the judgment I’m feeling from my friends and family. Dean is a man I see a future with, and I don’t want to give him up when he’s finally seeking treatment.

What would he think about communications today?

At the bridge table, most nonexperts do not work out the distributions of the unseen hands; and, to be honest, often it does not matter. Checking winners, losers and high-card points is more fruitful. But occasionally a deal comes along in which hand distribution is important.

To test yourself, cover the South and West hands. South is in four hearts. West leads the club ace, under which East signals with the eight, starting a high-low (echo) with a doubleton. West cashes his club king and gives East a club ruff. What should East lead at trick four?

In the bidding, South rebid three hearts to show at least 5-5 in the majors. North understandably went with the 5-3 heart fit. (Three no-trump fails if the defenders attack diamonds early.)

West was tempted to lead a trump because he had such good spades, but that might not have worked well here. If South wins the trick, cashes the spade ace, ruffs a spade in the dummy, and draws trumps, West is squeezed in three suits.
