Ruffner’s gives thanks for ‘10 great years’

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – For the last decade, Ruffner’s Luxury Pet Boarding has offered pet owners a place to leave their animals for the day or even longer.

As the St. Charles business celebrates a milestone anniversary – it opened March 1, 2005, at 1880 Dean St. – owner Tom Kosmel said he wanted to “thank the Fox Valley area for 10 great years.”

The sound of barking dogs remained a constant soundtrack as Kosmel spoke – and with good reason. This week usually is busy for Ruffner’s, as many dog owners need care for their canines as they partake in spring break vacations, Kosmel said.

“That’s our big time,” he said, noting Ruffner’s had to turn down 20 to 30 people.

“Any holiday, we book up fast.”

But it’s not just dogs that Ruffner’s cares for. It accepts animals of all sorts – cats, birds, snakes, turtles, guinea pigs and, Kosmel said, “a lot of rabbits.”

In addition to day care and boarding services, Ruffner’s offers grooming and has its own bakery, where dog treats are made in-house, Kosmel said.

Although Ruffner’s customer base is mainly from the immediate area, Kosmel said some live in places such as Naperville and Chicago.

Manager Jenn Brauner said Ruffner’s stands out from other pet boarding places because of the care it provides.

Employees hand-clean the facilities between each dog’s stay, she said, and they let pet owners know if their animal won’t be a good fit for day care.

“The girls can tell right

away,” Kosmel said.

Employees also watch out for the animals’ health, Brauner said, noting Kosmel recently drove a dog to its veterinarian in Joliet when it needed care.

“They’re like our own,” Brauner said of the animals.

Batavia to replace overhead electric lines in Colonial Village subdivision

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The city plans to replace overhead electric wires in the Colonial Village subdivision rather than burying them.

Aldermen discussed the issue during Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

Wisconsin-based Power System Engineering Inc. had prepared a report for the city looking at the advantages and disadvantages of replacing overhead wires versus burying them.

According to the report, the estimated cost of underground improvements would be about $1.2 million, compared to $481,437 for over-

head improvements.

Colonial Village subdivision is off of Route 31, near Lincoln Inn Banquets. City officials looked at the idea of charging residents for the additional cost of burying the lines if they wanted the city to go in that direction.

Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath told aldermen it would be impractical to collect funds from the residents through a special service area because Kane County would place an SSA payment on a bill only if calculated through a levy.

“Thus, everyone would pay a different amount,” McGrath said.

McGrath said the city could bill residents directly.

Another option would be for the city to create a special flat electric charge for the subdivision and charge it as part of a resident’s electric bill.

City officials recently met with Colonial Village residents to discuss the different options. Second Ward Alder-

man Marty Callahan, who attended the meeting, said residents weren’t interested in paying for underground improvements.

The city plans to send letters to subdivision residents stating the overhead lines will be replaced as is.

Park Board hopefuls talk rec center, finances

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Voters on Tuesday will choose from two newcomers and two incumbents to fill three seats in the St. Charles Park Board election race.

The newcomers are Trish Beckjord, a licensed landscape architect, and Vanessa Bell-LaSota, a current St. Charles Park Foundation board trustee and former aldermanic candidate.

The incumbents are Park Board President Bob Thomson and Park Board Treasurer Jim Cooke.

All four candidates on March 26 spoke at a League of Women Voters of Central Kane County candidate forum at Kane County Branch Court in St. Charles.

District’s proposed $23 million recreation center for the city’s far west side. The center would be built if district residents vote in favor of a $28 million referendum on the April 7 ballot.

Cooke clarified the recreation center and other plans tied to the referendum were not actual new proposals but the results of plans and discussion that began about six years ago.

Cooke and Thomson both spoke about the district’s lack of room for indoor sports.

Beckjord said the park district has completed a large amount of work to understand what the community’s needs are before finalizing its referendum.

“This family recreation center is not another gym – it expands the district’s ability to provide more services,” Beckjord said.

referendum could increase residents’ property taxes by more than $90, referring to the district’s estimate that a home valued at $300,000 would see

an average annual increase of $92.40.

“I’m definitely on board with the concept of the recreation center and the land acquisition,” Bell-LaSota said in a follow-up interview on Wednesday. “I do agree with the two aldermanic candidates [Ward 3 alderman Todd Bancroft and challenger Naomi Bosko] that the timing is challenging.”

Bell-LaSota also described the district’s fiscal year budgets as prudent and recommended pursuing any available sponsorship funding.

Beyond the referendum-related plans, Thomson and Cooke said the district continues to maximize its resources wherever possible.

“I can say with certainty that the park district staff is on an ongoing basis looking to increase efficiency without increasing spending,” Cooke said.

Grocery stores eye downtown Batavia

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – With a second grocery store looking to locate in downtown Batavia, aldermen are considering commissioning a market study that would show whether the downtown area could sustain another grocery store.

Aldermen discussed the issue during Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

Batavia economic development consultant Chris Aiston told aldermen two grocery stores have expressed interest about locating in downtown Batavia, and a third grocery store is looking at the Batavia market area.

Aiston told aldermen there has been a proposal from a specific building owner requesting city funds to pay for all or part of a market study, with the purpose of projecting sales for a specific and known grocery interest.

Aiston did not disclose to aldermen the name of the grocery store or where it would be located, stating the information was confidential.

The study could cost $7,500.

“If the council wishes to pursue this, staff would recommend offering a 50/50

matching grant to support it,” Aiston said.

Aiston told aldermen the city could consider having a study done that looked at the city’s downtown in a broader sense.

First Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien voiced concerns about a study being done specifically for a proposed grocery store.

“We have a grocery store in our downtown,” O’Brien said. “I don’t believe they have ever asked for any money, and they are doing fine. Will this study also tell us the kind of impact it will

have on the existing grocery store?”

Aiston said the study would reveal that impact.

“We would consider the existing grocery store as part of the study,” Aiston said.

“That would be a critical part of the study, to understand the existing grocery store and what they are doing. The new grocery store wants to know, obviously, if the pie is big enough to have enough slices for both of them.”

Batavia resident Yvonne Dinwiddie voiced concerns about the city commissioning a study.

“You guys are putting the cart before the horse again,” she said. “Your job is not to market the downtown. It’s not your job to market the properties for the Realtor.”

Aiston plans to present aldermen with more information at a future meeting.

“It’s not common, but unfortunately – and it’s a real shame – it’s on the increase,” Reichling said, noting K-12 institutions are a newer target.

Those responsible for local governments’ technology said they use various strategies to protect digital networks and information from unwanted, malicious intrusions.

“We’re no different than businesses or the private side,” said Roger Fahnestock, Kane County’s chief information officer.

The county protects its technology with physical measures, such as locked facilities and alarm systems, in addition to various digital products, including firewalls and security packages, Fahnestock said.

“You can never be too cautious about what you do,” he said.

But, he added, the precautions don’t guarantee complete safety.

“You can’t prevent everything,” Fahnestock said.

“None of this stuff is foolproof.”

Security in the age of transparency As a government entity, the county faces the challenge of limiting its audience to certain information while providing transparency to the public, Fahnestock said.

“You have to show everybody everything,” he said, citing property tax information as an example.

In a Kane County Board committee meeting last month, a staff member said the purchasing department became aware of about $32,000 in attempted purchases from vendors on the West Coast for delivery to an Oklahoma storage facility.

This wasn’t a case of someone obtaining and using a county’s credit card number, Fahnestock said. Rather, he said, someone used county letterhead – which can be found on public documents posted online – to create fake pur-

“We take steps to protect data from even people inside of our network,” Reichling said, noting each school is kept separate from the others.

The district also can block people inside its network from going to specific websites, Reichling said, noting that capability is useful when a phishing email is circulating. He said such emails generally contain a link to a site that tries to get personal information, like usernames and passwords.

“As soon as we see that email, we can go into the firewall and say no one can go on this site,” Reichling said.

Creating redundancies also is key in digital security, Reichling and Fahnestock said. They said examples include having duplicate equipment in multiple locations and using multiple Internet service providers, which District 303 does.

The trick with redundancies – such as with ISPs – is ensuring nothing is wasted, Reichling said.

“We use everything we have,” he said.

District 303’s Internet vendor diversity helped during the denial of service attack last fall, Reichling said, explaining he was able to shift schools not under attack to another Internet provider.

At the county, he said, certain officials are allowed to connect to the county’s server from their home computer through a VPN, or virtual private network. A VPN allows remote-control access of an official’s work computer, he said, and it eliminates the risk of an outside computer tainting the county system with a virus.

District 303 chooses not to use VPNs, Reichling said.

But, he said, the school district has installed mobile device management software on its mobile fleet – such as smartphones and tablets – so the devices’ contents can be destroyed should they be stolen or lost.

“It happens,” Reichling said.

He said the district also can impose rules on mobile devices, such as requiring a pass-code lock.

“Protection, it’s all in layers,” he said.

Trustee Harry Blecker is running for village president, along with incumbent trustees Susan George and Laura Andersen, who are seeking re-election. Newcomer Michael O’Dwyer is running for trustee, and Nicholas Girka is running for clerk. They are all on the ballot.

After he received the village newsletter, Blecker said he filed a complaint Wednes-

day with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Blecker alleged using the village’s newsletter to list candidates was using public funds for electioneering, a violation of state law.

“I see the timing of this newsletter as highly inappropriate seven days before the election,” Blecker said. “It behooves anybody running for elected office to get any vote they can at their own expense. … It means to me that she is desperate to get votes, and she will do anything to get a vote.”

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said it does not comment on pending or potential inquiries.

Smith said she did not do anything wrong or illegal.

Smith said she checked with William Braithwaite, who is the village attorney, as well as the Illinois State Board of Elections.

“They did tell me there

were no laws against listing candidates’ names, including write-in candidates,” Smith said of state election officials.

“There is nothing in the law or case law. I’m giving factual information, and that is allowed.”

Only one of Smith’s 14 previous village newsletters, available on the Campton Hills website, mentions candidates for village board. In the March 2009 newsletter, under “Message from the Village President,” Smith notes three incumbents are unopposed.

Smith said she was just giving information through the newsletter.

“If I had never done it before, it does not mean it’s not allowed,” Smith said. “I went to great lengths to make sure I was not violating the law. ... I made darn sure I was not violating anything. I do not know how [much] more open I can be.”

Smith would not answer a question about whether she listed the write-in candidates because she was one of them.

Braithwaite said he routinely reviews the village newsletter drafts, and he checked state statute when he saw the candidates listed.

“I was satisfied there was no violation because it was disseminating truthful information, not saying who to vote for or anything like that,” Braithwaite said. “I could find no cases to the contrary.”

As a further safeguard, Braithwaite said he also called the state board and confirmed it was not against the law.

“How can anybody complain about a newsletter listing the candidates of interest?” Braithwaite said.

“There is absolutely no impropriety in truthfully listing the names of the candidates in the newsletter.”

Geneva Cycle Shop celebrating 50 years of business

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva Cycle Shop is marking its 50th year with a two-week celebration that runs through April 15 at the store, which is at 12 E. State St., Geneva, owner Elis Giannini said.

He will offer snacks and refreshments on Saturdays, April 4 and 11, he said. The store will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday.

It is closed Sundays and holidays.

Giannini, 75, works by himself, making bikes for customers based on their size and what model they want.

“The bulk of my stock is not assembled,” Giannini said. “A third to a fourth of my bikes are not assembled yet. It’s like a warehouse.

They’re stacked to the ceiling – 350 to 400 bikes – that are not assembled yet.”

Giannini said he assembles one or two bikes of representative size, and if a customer needs a different size, he builds it for them.

Giannini said he did not always sell bicycles; he started selling motorcycles first.

“I started in the family garage directly across the street from where I am right

now,” Giannini said. “I was a motorcycle dealer for the first 20 years, Ducati, European motorcycles. Then in the mid-1980s, motorcycles just stopped selling. In the parlance of the street, they fell into the toilet.”

Giannini said the bike

path had just been built, so he started riding a bicycle. He said he decided to sell bicycles until motorcycles came back.

“Motorcycles came back in the ’90s, but I never went back,” Giannini said. “I was a lot more comfortable selling bicycles.”

CAMPTON HILLS – Village President Patsy Smith mailed out a village newsletter this week, listing who is on the ballot for Tuesday’s consolidated election ballot, including the write-in candidates. Her name was at the top of the list.

Candidates are vying for the positions of village president, three trustee seats and village clerk, all four-year terms.

Other write-in candidates allied with Smith are Mike Turgeon and Don Sheluga for trustee and Stephany Impson for clerk. Trustee candidate Steven Galloway, a Smith ally, is on the ballot.

GENEVA – Ceramic pots with legs, created by Geneva Middle Schools’ art students, are on display at the Geneva Public Library.

Calling the glazed clay pots “Walking Ware,” art teacher Nicole Yingst said the work is part of the students’ unit on sculpture. Yingst teaches eighth-grade art at Geneva Middle School North and South.

Their work was inspired

by Carlton Walking Ware, which was produced in England in the 1970s, she said.

“I was actually looking for a different project, pots with animal feet,” Yingst said. “I thought it would be fun to have people feet, and eighth-graders are very obsessed with shoes.”

When she looked online to see whether anyone had come up with that lesson already, Yingst said she found Carlton Walking Ware made in Stokeon-Trent, an area well-known for pottery manufacturing in England.

“They are actually similar to what we did – teapots, sugar bowls, cups,” Yingst said.

“Some feet look like they’re running. There’s a pot with crossed legs sitting down. I had no idea it existed.”

Yingst said the original Carlton Walking Ware pieces are sought-after by collectors.

AURORA – A team of volunteers associated with Waubonsee Community College will staff Waubonsee’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site.

Waubonsee has partnered with the Center for Economic Progress for more than a decade to sponsor the free income tax preparations assistance sessions through the VITA program.

Sessions will continue from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays at Waubonsee’s downtown Aurora Campus, at 18 S. River St., until April 15.

At these sessions, volunteers from Waubonsee and the Center for Economic Progress will help prepare and electronically file income tax returns, including those requiring the 1040 Schedule C used by small businesses and the self-employed.

Those eligible include families with annual incomes of $50,000 or less, and individuals with annual incomes less than $25,000.

Those seeking tax return preparation assistance at the VITA sessions should bring a copy of last year’s tax return, if they have one; Forms W-2 and 1099 from all employment in 2014; Social Security cards for all family members; and a photo ID. The free income tax return preparation is done on a firstcome, first-served basis, and the site closes when capacity is reached.

Behind the wheel Fifteen is an important age for a lot of reasons. For most people, it marks the start of high school. It shows a slow transition into the world of adulthood. And for those teenagers craving independence, 15 also marks something pivotal: eligibility for a driver’s permit.

This January, I started driver’s education at Drive Home Safe Driving School in Geneva. The program consists of 30 classroom hours and six sessions of driving with an instructor. Oh, and did I forget to mention? I also have to do 50 hours of practice driving in the car with my parents in order to get my license. Ten of them have to be night driving.

Basically, there are a lot of requirements I have to fulfill in order to be a licensed driver around my 16th birthday.

It’s definitely a good thing that so much practice is mandatory, however. As I quickly realized the first time I got behind the wheel, driving a car is not as easy as my parents make it seem.

My first few driving sessions consisted of this: going in circles around a parking lot. Me awkwardly slamming on the brakes. My parents talking in, “I’m freaking out but trying to stay calm,” voices, all while maintaining a death grip on the passenger seat armrest.

I’m proud to say we’ve (mostly) eliminated those things from my driving by now. I’m by no means perfect, but I’ve made a lot of progress since those first few times in the car. My mom even told me that she’s not quite as terrified with me in the driver’s seat as she was in the beginning. And if that’s not improvement, I don’t know what is.

One thing I’ve gained from starting driver’s ed is a greater appreciation and awareness for everything that occurs on the road. I can no longer sit in the passenger seat without being hyper-

The IPDE (dentify, predict, decide, execute) process that my classroom teachers drilled into me is constantly running through my head, and I’ll never look at driving the same way.

I’ve also learned how seriously I have to take the task; driving is a very risky endeavor, and I’ve become very conscious of how my actions affect others on the road. Whenever I read about car accidents in the newspaper, I now realize that if I’m not careful, that could be me.

Never again will I take riding as a passenger for granted, because I’ve discovered just how much the driver has to be aware of and do.

I know driving is very important, and its importance will increase as I grow older and gain independence.

I’m still a little freaked out by operating a motor vehicle, and I probably still will be for some time. But, with every time I’m behind the wheel, I become more confident, and I hope I’ll be a safe and self-assured driver for the rest of my life.

As every single driver’s ed instructor told us during the classroom sessions, “Driving is a privilege, not a right.” I’m excited to finally be getting that privilege and to see what happens with it down the road ... pun intended.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR CANDIDATE CONFUSION To the Editor: Participating on the school board can be a difficult role when it comes to balancing the taxpayers’ burden and providing quality education to our community students. We applaud those that consider this position and dedicate their time to solve these critically important issues.

As representatives of the community, the school board member characteristics we value most include the ability to listen to competing positions, work collaboratively to define a solution, and provide transparent communication of these decisions back to the community that elected them.

The current Geneva School

District 304 Board has worked hard over the past years to meet these responsibilities, as evidenced by their board meetings and the several awards and accomplishments listed on the District 304 website.

It is with these characteristics that we find the position of three candidates running for the District 304 Board race to be confusing. Large campaign signs throughout the community list three candidates for school board that were originally reported as a slate with a focused stance as an advocate for the taxpayer. This trio of candidates has recently stated that – although they are marketing themselves together – they are not a coalition and are independently seeking our votes as

fiscally-minded advocates.

We find it concerning that in only a few months of campaigning, the three potential candidates that share a common platform have been unable to be in sync and have continually backtracked on their messages to the community.

Given this, it is confusing on how these three candidates would be able to work with the other four board members as competing community viewpoints are considered. Would they be able to help resolve those issues that face the school board and balance the needs of the taxpayers and educators?

Buttermilk Cafe ‘not the average breakfast place’ Geneva restaurant opened to the public this week

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Pete Kostopoulos and Spiro Kouvelis believe that fresh buttermilk biscuits are the perfect way to start the day.

Buttermilk biscuits are just one of the items on the menu at the new Buttermilk Cafe, located at 7 W. State St. in downtown Geneva. Kostopoulos and Kouvelis own the restaurant, which serves breakfast and lunch. Buttermilk Cafe opened its doors to the public March 30.

Kostopoulos and Kouvelis went through a lot of trial and error to come up with the perfect recipe for buttermilk biscuits.

“It was a lot of buttermilk and a lot of stomach aches,” Kostopoulos said. “Between our buttermilk pancakes and buttermilk biscuits, we know we have the recipe down pat.”

Kostopoulos and Kouvelis have a wealth of experience in the restaurant business. They have been business partners for 15 years, and own another restaurant in Crest Hill.

Buttermilk Cafe also features a full-service specialty coffee bar where one can order any number of beverages, such as a mocha coconut or cinnamon spice latte.

“We’re really excited about the machine that we’ve purchased,” Kostopoulos said. “It is a fully automated machine, from frothing and steaming the milk to calculating the weights. I am only one of two establishments in Illinois that actually have this. It is the Bentley of espresso machines.”

The machine also will remember what you’ve ordered,

he said.

“If you come in and you order any specialty coffee beverage and you liked it, the next time you come in, it will be exactly the same,” Kostopoulos said.

“That’s how sophisticated this machine is.”

Buttermilk Cafe offers a full breakfast menu, including omelets, pancakes, waffles, crepes, skillets, French toast and eggs Benedict prepared in a variety of ways.

“We wanted to cater to all needs, from basic breakfast to the higher sophisticated palate,” Kostopoulos said. “My business partner and I are both self-proclaimed foodies. We put together fusion flavors. For instance, our Benedict dishes – every single one is authentically made on a different bread and hollandaise sauce. Our steak Benedict is served on a french bread and it has a herbed bearnaise sauce. We’re definitely unique. We’re not the average breakfast place.”

The lunch menu features Angus beef burgers, sandwiches and salads. Everything on the menu is made from scratch, he said.

“I don’t even have a walkin freezer,” Kostopoulos said.

“All I have is a two-door freezer where I store some frozen products, such as french fries.

That’s how much I believe in the product being fresh.”

The plan is to expand the Buttermilk Cafe concept and open

additional restaurants, Kostopoulos said. They are eying the northwest suburbs next, such as the Schaumburg area.

“We are just looking to make this a well-oiled machine before we move on,” Kostopoulos said.

Japanese in Geneva: Matsuri sushi bar a Third Street respite GENEVA – Dining out in downtown Geneva can be a daunting affair. There are so many options, and so many of them are so very good.

Over time, I have found that the best way to try out a “new” restaurant is to dine-in for lunch. Lunch tends to even the playing field price-wise.

Usually, prices are cheaper overall, and much of the dinner menu can be found on the lunch menu for less money.

Since dining at sushi restaurants can be a more costly endeavor, I decided to try Matsuri Japanese Restaurant for lunch Monday. Matsuri is a sushi bar situated along the popular Third Street, a stone’s throw away from the Geneva Metra station.

High ceilings give the illusion that the restaurant is larger than it is in actuality, and the clean, quiet space is simply decorated. Though the restaurant was empty upon our arrival, service was expectantly great. With a kind smile, quick service and a helpful attitude, our waitress made our experience at Matsuri a delightful one. The food didn’t hurt either.

For less than $10, my dining companion ordered Chicken Teriyaki with California Roll, a special lunch combo that came with miso soup, a bowl of steamed white rice, a six-piece California roll and thinly-sliced, teriyaki chicken ($8.95). Other specialty lunch items include shrimp or vegetable tempura and beef or salmon teriyaki ($8.95 to $13.50).

The miso soup, a common element during any sushi experience – and not often an item that enthralls diners with its complexities of flavors – soothed my senses with its steaming broth while tofu cubes melted in my mouth.

On a recommendation, my dining companion and I ordered shrimp Gyoza ($4.50), five Japanese-style, pan-fried shrimp dumplings. (Pan-fried

beef or steamed shrimp dumplings also are available.) Without a doubt, I would order the shrimp Gyoza again. A crispy outer layer of the dumpling encased minced vegetables and shrimp and came with a side of soy-based sauce for dipping.

We ordered three other sushi rolls to share: the Crunchy Spicy Tuna ($8.50), the namesake Matsuri roll ($13.95) and the Geneva Roll ($8.25).

Everything tasted great, but the Matsuri Roll was the table favorite, as half of the roll was topped with tuna while the other half had salmon. Delicate roe and a spicysauce drizzle topped each roll, which was filled with imitation crab meat, cucumber and

panko.

The Geneva Roll had a crunchy, panko topping with super white tuna and salmon.

The Crunchy Spicy Tuna roll looked similar to the Geneva roll, but featured spicy tuna as the star ingredient and delivered a kick spice to the palate.

The Matsuri bar serves wine, hot and cold sakes, hot and iced tea, Japanese beer – Kirin, Sapporo and Asahi – coke products and Japanese sodas – Watermelon and Strawberry Ramune.

Whether capping a long day of shopping along the serene streets of Geneva or in need of a calming respite during a hectic work week, stop in Matsuri for its namesake roll, the shrimp Gyoza and a piping hot bowl of miso soup, and all will be right with the world.

BALL OR NOTHING First basemen ready to take pick when necessary

eneva softball first baseman Annika Radabaugh’s voice noticeably brightens when she discusses the perceived adversity of her position.

No question she enjoys practicing picking low or bouncing throws.

For Radabaugh and the rest of her softball and baseball counterparts, spreading out to save a ball from getting away starts with confidence.

That’s especially crucial in the early season, when practice reps on either side of a school’s gym doors aren’t always prevalent.

“Personally, I love picking the ball because it’s challenging, and I like it when something is challenging,” Radabaugh said. “It gets me very engaged. I like that you have to be solid to finish the play, I guess. If (an infielder) gets the ball, they field the ball, they

throw it to you and you catch it. You kind of just finish it off. It’s kind of a cool feeling, I guess.”

A sophomore, Radabaugh utters a belief shared by many who have stationed themselves opposite third base for far longer.

In the case of Kaneland senior baseball first baseman Dan Hammermeister, extensive experience playing alongside classmates and teammates Austin Wheatley (second base) Jacob Bachio (third base) and Joey Panico (shortstop) enhances his ability to imagine a world without mitt-extending motions.

“I think it all comes down to the stretch, but luckily, I don’t have to scoop the ball too much because my teammates normally throw me really good balls,” Hammermeister said. “I’ve played with these guys forever. They’ve always been really good throwers. I very rarely have to scoop balls, but if I can, I

like to help the guys out.”

Hammermeister used a more outdoor voice to speak above the constant ping of fellow Knights hitting in an indoor batting cage late last month, but still, that seemed to be preseason optimism talking.

Baseball and softball teams cope with all manner of hops and throws amid ever-changing weather during the course of each spring. Pitchers arguably stand a better chance of being perfect.

If the first baseman can’t control the velocity, arc and direction of throws speeding his or her way, he or she can begin to neutralize potential danger.

“Over there, A-number-one is just the whole footwork thing about getting to the base and where you want to be on the base,” St. Charles East baseball coach Len Asquini said.

Coaches preach shifting your back foot to the front

inside corner of first base, a maneuver that can shave precious time, especially in crucial bang-bang plays.

Whether a ball is angling toward the base or up the line, the first baseman’s primary objective is obviously to field it.

While a good first baseman covers more than just the base, getting positioned at the front inside corner rather than the back or side of the base allows for easier extension.

And make no mistake, stepping and stretching toward the baseball – just not too early – always comes before making a dramatic glove swipe from a more upright position.

“We’ve found that a lot of times guys will try to let the ball travel into them,” Burlington Central baseball coach Kyle Nelson said. “You’ve got to go out and get it. Bend your knees and try to get as low as they can.”

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East softball pitcher Jordan Hall’s strong effort and tough defense in a key situation were the main ingredients in the Saints’ 5-2 victory against Kaneland in a nonconference game Wednesday.

First, there was Hall, a junior right-hander who gave up four hits in the complete-game effort.

“It was a solid win against a solid team,” East coach Kelly Horan said. “Hall had some pretty good movement on the ball today, and she got real tough when we needed her the most.”

One of those situations was when Hall gave up a leadoff triple to Kaneland third baseman Meg Cohrs in the fourth inning.

“The inning that sticks out the most was when Kaneland got a triple with no outs and she came back and set down the next three batters,” Horan said. “That’s mentally tough.”

“Fastballs, mostly outside, and my change-up, which threw them off a little bit,” Hall said of the pitches she used to stymie Kaneland batters.

The Saints (4-0) thwarted another Knights’ rally in the seventh behind slick defense.

Morgan Sikon singled to left center to open the inning.

She advanced to second when Samantha Payton was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a Morgan Weber groundout.

Kaneland’s Rachel Goress followed with a grounder to Saints third baseman Alex Latoria, who threw to Kelly Rinker at first to retire Goress.

Rinker fired the ball to home plate, where catcher Rylee Stout’s tag just beat Sikon at the plate and ended both the rally and the game.

“I was proud of their effort; they never quit,” Kaneland coach Peter Goff said. “That play at the end, that’s a 50-50 call, and of course I thought she was safe and they said otherwise. That’s the way it goes, but we did put ourselves in position to have an opportunity to tie it.”

“She threw some outside

pitches before, so I was focusing on that,” Latoria said.

Latoria finished 2 for 3 with a double in the fifth inning.

She then scored the team’s fifth run on Stout’s single.

“You have to give St. Charles credit. They came out and hit the ball where we weren’t, and when we hit it was right at somebody,” Goff said.

Kaneland (3-2) ended Hall’s shutout bid in the fifth inning when Payton scored on a Goress single.

Cohrs belted a home run to center to start the Kaneland sixth.

Morrow took the loss for the Knights.

“Angie did a good job of bearing down and keeping us in the game,” Goff said.

Hitting behind runners and executing a squeeze bunt were key as the Saints pushed two runs across the plate without getting a ball out of the infield to top Fremd, 2-1, in a nonconference game.

“When we looked down at the bullpen, we knew execution would be key,” Saints coach Len Asquini said.

That is because when the Saints looked to the Fremd bullpen, they saw Northwestern-bound Mack Rosman

warming up to face them.

The Saints didn’t get their first hit against Rosman until the fourth inning, when Austin Regelbrugge singled. They turned that hit into a run as Regelbrugge got to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a groundout to short by catcher Anthony Adduci and scored on a infield hit by Jimmy Dale, tying the game at 1.

East pushed the game-winning run across the plate the very next inning when Jake Clodi led off with a double.

Corbin Marucco then moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt.

Leadoff hitter Reid Olson then got a suicide squeeze bunt down to score Clodi.

“I told them that was everyone’s run,” Asquini said. “We had two big bunts there. Corbin moving the runner over and Reid getting the squeeze down were as big as Jake’s double.”

Fremd met at the mound with Clodi at third and one out and Asquini called Olson down for a conference.

“Coach gave me the first pitch to do with what I wanted,” Olson said. “But the first pitch was a curveball, so I took it.”

He looked down the third base line and got the squeeze sign from Asquini.

“My hitting hasn’t been that hot, so I was glad to get the bunt down,” a smiling Olson said.

“Hopefully, that will give me

some confidence at the plate.”

The Saints (2-1) mustered only three hits, but through small ball, turned those hits into two runs.

A trio of Saint pitchers – starter Hunter Cisewski, middle reliever Steve Podany and closer Clodi – scattered seven hits and only allowed one Fremd run.

Fremd (3-3) scored in the top of the third when, with two outs, Cisewski walked leadoff man Kazuhiro Higuchi. After Cody Patenaude singled, Thomas Austin, who had three hits , singled home Higuchi.

Two big defensive plays kept Fremd from scoring any more runs.

With runners on second and

third and two outs in the top of the fifth, first baseman Jake Asquini made a tough scoop of Dale’s throw from deep short.

“That’s a two-run scoop,” Len Asquini said.

Then, to close the game, with a runner on first and two outs in the top of the seventh, Fremd’s Ian Bohn hit a fastball from Clodi down the right field line. Regelbrugge made a diving catch to make the final out.

“I’m not really thinking about whether I will get to the ball or not, at that point,” Regelbrugge said. “I am just reacting, running to try to make the play.

“Our outfield did a really good job today. We got to every ball.”

Those are the sports injuries you regularly hear about. Those are the ones you see happen on TV. Those are the ones you expect.

But a torn kidney?

That sounds a bit more serious. That’s what Emily Brodner is battling back from. The former St. Charles North and current Illinois softball catcher was blocking the plate during her first collegiate Emily Brodner season. It was a normal play that didn’t end normally, as the collision at home plate resulted in a trip to the emergency room.

A CAT scan later revealed a tear in her kidney.

“At first, I just thought the wind was knocked out of me. I didn’t think much of it,” Brodner said. “I ended up going to the ER later that night. The following week, I got a CAT scan, and that’s when they figured it out.”

It’s the most-serious injury

Illinois catcher Emily Brodner, a St. Charles North graduate, suffered a kidney injury early in her debut season.

Brodner has ever had, but the road to recovery is going well and the outlook is good. And Brodner’s sights aren’t focused solely on her sophomore campaign in 2016. She’s hoping to return before this season is over.

“All I could really do [at first] was sit and wait, but right now I can start to do a full warm-up,

and I can start throwing and hitting again soon. It’s just slowly working me back into things.”

Before all this, Brodner was a freshman catcher enjoying her first taste of college softball.

She was having success behind the plate, throwing out six of the 18 runners who attempted to steal on her, a number that was at a time one of the highest

in the Big Ten and still leads the team.

And her first career hit? A home run.

“It was a lot of fun,” Brodner said. “It’s definitely another level up from high school ball, but it’s definitely a lot of fun. I love my team, and the competition is great.

“The speed of the game and

the level of pitching [are the biggest differences between high school and college]. The pitching is definitely a lot more difficult here than it was in high school.

“I usually adjust to pitchers pretty easily. I feel pretty natural back there. I think I was at one point second in the Big Ten in throwing runners out stealing.”

Brodner is studying financial planning, and down the road, she’s planning to go into the family business at Olcott Plastics in St. Charles, where she’s looking forward to working alongside her father, brother and uncles.

But right now, she’s also focused on recovering from this injury and getting back on the field.

“I’m hoping I can come back before the end of the year, so I’m hoping I can come back stronger and just better than when I got hurt,” she said. “Hoping that I’ve got improved arm strength and just strength all around so I can come out and start throwing more girls out and become a leader.”

“Oh yeah. He’ll give his body for anything, man. He’s got that flexibility that a catcher has,” Knights catcher Joe Laudont said. “He puts his body in front of balls that he needs to, and he’s really good with his hands over there picking balls at first base left and right. He’s got the eye to be able to see where it’s going to go and be able to get down and sort of either block with his body or make a long, out front pick.”

Experience behind the plate isn’t a prerequisite for playing first base.

Neither is being left-handed, although Asquini stresses how that attribute allows athletes to take more of a

front-handed stab at a ball as opposed to a right-hander’s backhand.

This spring, Asquini’s son, Jake, will shift from shortstop to first base.

He boasts experience at both positions, but for those not quite as steeped in the ways of picking throws, here’s Radabaugh comparing first base to the rest of the infield: “It’s kind of the same thing,” she said, “but you have to keep your foot in one spot, and you just try and get in front of it and block it.

That’s what I do.”

All while fixing her eyes and full attention on the ball, which certainly shouldn’t go unnoticed.

“If you stand in front of it and you think you’re going to get it, your head is on it the whole time, your eyes are on it, and you watch it,” Radabaugh said. “And wherever it goes, you try and get your glove there.”

UConn coaches to skip tourney because of law

By EBEN NOVY-WILLIAMS Bloomberg News University of Connecticut men’s basketball coach Kevin Ollie, whose Huskies won the national championship last season, won’t go to the NCAA Final Four this weekend because of Indiana’s new Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The announcement by school president Susan Herbst came Tuesday, a day after Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy signed an executive order banning state-funded travel to Indiana.

The Indiana measure, signed into law last week, has been widely criticized by those who say it could lead to increased, legal discrimination against gays and lesbians.

“In support of Gov. Malloy’s travel ban to the state of Indiana, Kevin Ollie and other members of the UConn men’s basketball staff will not travel to Indianapolis for the NCAA Final Four and events surrounding it,” Herbst said in a statement. “UConn is a community that values all of our members and treats each person with the same degree of respect, regardless of their background and beliefs and we will not tolerate any other behavior.”

Earlier Tuesday, University of Southern California athletic director Pat Haden said he would not attend College Football Playoff committee meetings in Indianapolis this week in honor of his son, who is gay.

The NCAA, which is based in Indianapolis and hosting the semifinals and finals of its men’s basketball tournament there this weekend, has said it is concerned by the implications of the law and is seeking clarity. NCAA President Mark Emmert suggested that the law could prompt the organization, which had $989 million in revenue last year, to move its events or offices elsewhere.

“You don’t want to, because of a political activity, disrupt an event that’s been in the making for so long,” Emmert said Monday in an interview on ESPN. “But if we have to move events, we’ll do it.”

Taking precautions, pregnant women should not fear CMV Dear Doctor K: At a recent pregnancy checkup, my doctor said something about cytomegalovirus. What is that, and what does it have to do with pregnancy?

Dear Reader: Cytomegalovirus, or CMV, is one of eight members of the family of human herpesviruses. The first two members are the viruses that cause “herpes” sores of the mouth, genitals and other areas.

All of the herpesviruses cause a lifelong infection. Once you are infected with CMV, it always remains in your body, generally causing no trouble.

Up to 85 percent of adults in the United States have been infected. The virus can pass from person to person through body fluids such as blood, urine or saliva. Women can pass CMV to their unborn babies in the womb, in vaginal secretions during delivery and in breast milk after birth.

In most healthy adults and children, a new infection with CMV results in only mild and temporary symptoms. In fact, a new infection often is “silent,” causing no symptoms at all.

Adults get seriously ill from CMV primarily when their immune systems become weakened by disease (such as HIV

But CMV can be serious, and even fatal, for newborn babies.

That’s why, if you are pregnant, your doctor may want to test you for CMV. When a pregnant woman becomes newly infected with CMV during pregnancy, there is a 40 percent chance her baby will become infected. In contrast, less than 2 percent of babies born to mothers who were infected with CMV before they became pregnant are infected. And their problems tend to be less severe.

CMV infection in newborns whose mothers were infected during pregnancy can cause serious disability. The effects of CMV in newborns can vary greatly.

Some babies may die from the infection, but others may have no long-lasting effects.

Newborns with CMV are likely to be born premature and at a low birth weight. They may be born with a small brain or other nervous system disorders that can cause seizures, deafness,

mental disability or death. CMV can cause the liver and spleen to enlarge, liver abnormalities that cause yellowing of the skin and eyes, and blood disorders.

Parents, including expectant mothers, can become infected from their children, though.

CMV does not spread easily. Still, someone like you who is pregnant should be careful if you have young kids in the house. The following tips may reduce your risk of getting CMV: • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after changing diapers.

• Don’t kiss young children under the age of 5 or 6 on the mouth or cheek. Instead, kiss them on the head or give them a big hug.

• Don’t share food, drinks or utensils with young children.

• Don’t put a child’s pacifier in your mouth. (Seem obvious?

I’ve had at least one patient do it thoughtlessly.)

These few precautions can protect you and your baby from becoming seriously ill from a virus that usually causes no harm.

Last night she called in tears from a motel in Ohio. She wanted to know if her old room was still available to her because she and her husband are over and she wants to get a divorce.

When I told her father, he said that I made a huge mistake. I should have told her she got herself into this mess without our help, and that she should just stay in Ohio and get herself out of it without our help.

If he had not taken the time to give me a pregnancy test, who knows how far along I would have been before I found out.

That is both depressing and humorous. At the bridge table, finding the correct play can be very difficult. This deal, for example, would trip up a lot of players.

How should South plan the play in three no-trump after West leads his fourth-highest heart to dummy’s bare ace?

In the given auction, North’s two-club rebid was New Minor Forcing, promising at least game-invitational values and asking opener for more information. Two diamonds denied both three-card spade support and four hearts. Three clubs was natural and game-forcing. (If you do not use New Minor Forcing, North should rebid three clubs, and South would continue with three no-trump.)

South starts with seven top tricks: two hearts, three diamonds and two clubs. So, a 3-3 diamond division is enough – but that split is against the odds; and if it exists, it will still be there in a minute if the club suit proves unhelpful. First, declarer should try to collect four club tricks. At trick two, he should cash dummy’s club ace. When East drops the jack, South continues with the club eight (or nine) from the dummy. If the suit splits 3-2, he has the desired four club tricks.

Here, though, West wins with his ten.

Then, when declarer gets into your hand, he can finesse dummy’s club nine (or eight) and run for home with two hearts, three diamonds and four clubs.

Practicality often trumps the desires of the heart when it comes to selecting a souvenir to commemorate a longplanned trip or that once-in-a-lifetime travel experience.

We talk ourselves into getting something that will slide into the suitcase nicely, is lightweight enough to carry during the rest of the journey or passable enough to justify checking “bring something home” off the list.

In some cases, we’re so engaged in sightseeing and activities that we can’t be bothered to detour to that famous handicraft market or off-the-beaten-path artisan store to treasure hunt for that special something to bring home. And although it’s true that there’s nothing quite like memories and photos as takeaway, it’s often used as an excuse to avoid the vacation shopping experience altogether.

I put treasure hunting for the finest examples of local handcrafted traditions high on the list of things to do while on a special journey. I realize that I’m an interior designer whose job it is to understand these kinds of things, but that’s not why I do it. I do it because the best examples of local crafts act as storytellers that give unique insight into the place I’m visiting

honor. Curating that home with thoughtfully selected purchases from each special place you’ve visited is a wonderfully physical way to manifest your life experiences and make walking through your front door a daily highlight. If you find the whole thing a little daunting to tackle, follow some of my guidelines below and you’ll soon be treasure hunting like a pro.

• Do some homework. A little research ahead of time can point you in the right direction when it comes to figuring out what to purchase vs. what to forgo. Pass on goods imported to that location (“Made in China” is not a good sign unless you’re in China) and concentrate on what that local culture excels at producing. Most guidebooks will direct you to the kinds of local handicrafts you should be tracking down. In addition to artwork, sculptures and carvings, consider items that also have a practical aspect such as rugs, towels, bedding, dishes and lighting.

• Take some basic measurements and an empty suitcase with you. To make the process more efficient, take critical measurements (and a lightweight measuring tape too if you have room) so that you can quickly

focus on those items that will actually work and dismiss the rest. If you’re heading to a country that makes beautiful rugs, for example, assess where you could use a rug and measure the overall width and length of that room.

• Seek the real deal. Research where to get first-quality specimens ahead of time so that you’re not wasting valuable time in tourist traps. If you forget, or can’t seem to figure it out, ask locals where they shop once you’re on the ground.

• Stick to neutrals or a palette you know will work for you. It’s easy to get distracted by dynamic colors when you’re

on vacation. That multicolored tapestry might look special while you’re wandering the markets of Mexico but end up clashing terribly once you get it home. When in doubt, purchase items in white, shades of neutrals or made with materials in their natural state.

• Bring back one great thing.

Small items that slip into your primary suitcase are tempting purchases, but their diminutive scale, however, doesn’t result in much of an impact. Instead, amass the money you would’ve used to purchase multiple small items to purchase one exemplary item with some scale to it so that it has impact in the space.
