By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A group of Kane County residents on Sunday learned that they can successfully grow vegetables without using the ground.

About 30 people attended the “Grow Your Own Groceries – In Containers” seminar at the Geneva Ace Hardware store located at 617 W. State St. Ron and Linda Stork of the Bolingbrook Garden Club led the event.

“For those of you that don’t grow your own vegetables, you don’t know what you’re missing,” Linda Stork said.

The free seminar was sponsored by the hardware store and the Just Food Initiative of the Fox Valley, an interfaith ministry committed to building sustainable and just food systems. M. Grace Grzanek, founder of the area’s Just Food Initiative, said container gardening provides an alternative to the food sold in supermarkets.

Some commercial food might be harmful because it’s been subjected to multiple artificial treatments, like green tomatoes chemically turned red, Grzanek said.

Tomatoes are one of the many foods that grow well in containers, in addition to sweet corn, lettuce and potatoes, Ron Stork said. The Storks mostly focused on Earthboxes as the ideal container gardening option because it has produced the best results for them.

Earthboxes are rectangular, made of food-grade plastic and contain a water reservoir.

He said fertilizer, preferably organic, only has to be applied once at the start of the season. It’s important to use a potting mix for container gardening and not ground soil, he said.

Another difference from traditional gardening is that the Storks cover the potting mix with plastic, then make cuts in the areas where they want to plant the food seedlings. The plastic is really meant to just cover the soil or potting mix and the part of the plant below the surface, Ron Stork said.

“The plastic is not stifling the plant,” Linda Stork said.

The Earthboxes can be purchased in a variety of sizes and be used indoors or outdoors, as long as the plants have enough water and sunlight.

When small animals try to rip through the plastic, Stork suggests adding marigolds or spreading dried peppers to repel them.

Sharon Garlinsky liked Stork’s advice about keeping critters away from the growing vegetables. She said deer and rabbits are a common sight in her Sugar Grove neighborhood.

Garlinksy was impressed with how the Earthboxes work.

ing of peppers and blueberries. Batavia resident Terri Grommes has grown potatoes, tomatoes, squash and peppers in raised beds. After attending the seminar, she plans on trying other container gardening methods, such as herb seed mats.

Grommes does question whether container gardening is more cost-effective than buying store-bought goods. What she doesn’t deny is that local garden plants have a far superior quality.

“I think it’s healthier,” Grommes said. “Nothing tastes better than homegrown, fresh vegetables.”

Police raise most cash in 2013 Torch Run effort

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The Maple Park Police Department placed first in the state in a fundraising effort for the 2013 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, officials said.

In total, the department raised $63,195.75. It even beat out much larger departments, including the Illinois State Police and Chicago police.

Eighty-five agencies had participated.

Maple Park Police Chief Mike Acosta said he is the only full-time member of his department, which has six part-time officers. The fundraising effort is not just carried out by Maple Park officers, he said, but by an extended group.

“I have a core group of people that used to do it for the Illinois Department of Corrections,” Acosta said. “Colleen MacRunnels of Elburn used to work for Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles. She did fundraising for them for Special Olympics for three years there.”

MacRunnels retired but still wanted to do Torch Run fundraising, Acosta said. She came to him and village officials, and they began working

together.

Their first year participating in the Torch Run in 2011 raised $20,000 and in 2012 they cleared $38,000, MacRunnels said.

“It was a lot of hard work but a lot of fun,” MacRunnels said. “We hope to keep that

spot this year but there’s a lot of competition.”

Although the full fundraising effort does not fall on seven people in the department, Acosta said, the group still is smaller than the state police, Chicago and many other departments.

“There were 306 shooters and we served over 500 people lunch,” MacRunnels said.

“We gave away more than $20,000 in prizes.”

Maple Park police were presented with a proclamation for their contribution to the Torch Run at a recent DeKalb County Board meeting.

Police agency contributions through Torch Run events is significant, said Special Olympics Illinois spokeswoman Michele Evans.

“For the state of Illinois, the Law Enforcement Torch Run raised more than $3 million, and that amount of money helps us continue to offer the quality programs we do [for] our athletes and the great experiences they have,” Evans said. “Without that, we would not be able to have as great a program as we do.”

The St. Charles Police Department ranked 16th in the state, raising nearly $21,000, according to the Special Olympics Illinois tally.

Meanwhile, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office ranked 18th, raising more than $20,000. Geneva ranked 29th, raising more than $15,300, and Batavia ranked 66th, raising more than $6,700, according to the tally.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A Sugar Grove man charged last year with multiple felonies on accusations he sexually assaulted a boy now faces additional charges on similar allegations involving another child, according to Kane County court records.

Noel F. Buhay, 46, of the 1100 block of Door Drive, was charged in March with two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, a Class X felony, records show.

Documents indicate he allegedly sexually assaulted a boy younger than 13 between late February 2004 and early April 2005.

According to records, Buhay posted $30,000 bail of his $300,000 bond March 21.

BATAVIA – Batavia School District 101 officials and board members this month will continue talks to take the next steps for their 21st Century Learning Plan.

District leaders did not make a specific recommendation yet, but their discussion at the Batavia School Board meeting on March 25 focused on providing each student in grades three and up with their own Chromebook laptop. The laptop runs the Google Chrome Web browser and other Webbased applications.

The recommended ratio for a tablet or other device – per student – has not yet been established for kindergarten through second grade, but it is expected to be 2-to-1

at a minimum.

“We need to prepare our students for taking online classes and learning and growing in a blended environment,” said Brad Newkirk, the district’s chief academic officer.

Almost all of Batavia students already are connected at home. Of this school year’s students, 99 percent have access to technology at home, 96 percent have high-speed Internet and 57 percent have a smartphone, according to a recent parent survey.

The district might propose getting Chromebooks for students in grades six through 12 for the next school year, and then Chromebooks and other devices for kindergarten through second-graders during the 2015-16 school year, said Tony Inglese, the district’s chief information

officer.

The budget for each proposed device is $300, with an expected life cycle of two years. Parents would have to pay $75 annually for two years, or half the cost of the device, and then they would own it outright after it has to be replaced, Inglese said.

Board members like Tina Bleakley questioned the rotation and whether a student’s Chromebook could be repurposed for a younger sibling.

Inglese said the Chromebooks would not perform as well after two years of extensive use, and that it would be best for each student to have an updated device.

District officials later this month will return to the school board with a formal recommendation on the 21st Century Learning Plan, Inglese said.

NORTH AURORA – Village trustees later this month are expected to discuss how much it will cost to repair the North Aurora Activity Center, which has been closed since March 12 because of structural damage.

Batavia-based Kluber Architects and Engineers has determined there are three sections of the building where the roof

joists were deemed to have failed.

“They were supporting more weight than they could handle,” Village Administrator Steve Bosco said. “They were stressed beyond their capacity.

The worst part of the roof was on the west side of the building, where Share and Care had their classes.”

The unusually heavy snowfall this season increased the load on the building, he said. Share and Care Learning Center,

which was one of the main tenants in the North Aurora Activity Center, recently found a new permanent home in the former Rainbow Tile building at 12 John St. in North Aurora.

Kluber is now estimating how much it would cost to repair the joists. Village trustees are expected to discuss Kluber’s report at their Committee of the Whole meeting April 21.

“We think it will be significantly expensive to do the joists,” Bosco said.

“There are also other aspects of the building that are aging.”

The North Aurora Activity Center originally served as North Aurora Grade School from 1933 to 1968.

Other tenants in the building include Haley’s Playground, which serves those with special needs.

In addition, the Friday Nite Spot – a volunteer-run activity for fourth- through eighth-grade students – is housed there.

Geneva Public Library seeks company to do community survey its appraisal two weeks ago.

He said he expected the two sides will sit down together once the library board has a chance to consider its appraisal.

“If they want to buy it, I’m confident we will come to some good middle ground that serves all of our constituents,” Lauzen said.

The library was going to buy that site from the county 10 years ago for $1.02 million,

but county officials never took final action for the sale to proceed.

The county has a 1989 agreement giving library officials the right of first refusal, which it exercised earlier this year.

Lauzen said if the library does not want to buy the property, he would put it on the market.

Boria said the appraisal will be on the agenda for the library board’s next meeting, which will be at 7 p.m. April 10, as it begins having two meetings a month while it looks for a new director.

“They have had no time to sit down and talk to the county,” Boria said. “They can’t talk to the county before the board itself talks about it.”

GENEVA – Officials from the Geneva Public Library want the community to be surveyed on its satisfaction with the library.

And while they seek the community’s views, they might also want to ask whether residents want a new library in a new location – an appraisal of the Sixth Street School property as a possible new site for a library was just completed, officials said.

The library board recently voted to have interim library director Marilyn Boria send out requests for proposals from companies that do such surveys. Companies interested in doing the survey are to respond by April 17.

Residents will be asked about their satisfaction with the library’s collections, services and facility, Boria said.

“The library district has not done a community survey since 2003,” Boria said. “We want to do a survey and gather opinions on issues from residents in the library district.”

Boria said the survey results will provide data for the board to consider, with regard to its services, collections and possible improvements to its current facility at 127 James St. in Geneva.

Boria said the library received an appraisal that it requested be done on the Sixth Street School site at 210 S. Sixth St. in Geneva, which is

owned by Kane County and houses the Kane County Regional Office of Education.

Both county and library officials sought new appraisals of the property because the county wants to sell it.

The 1924-built former school building is getting old, and its maintenance and repair costs are expensive, Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen has said.

Fechner said the unsuccessful candidate has five days to challenge the results.

“I’m humbled,” Tegeler said. “I have to thank my supporters and hers also. It truly shows that every vote does count and we should take the process seriously.”

Kostelny did not return a voicemail message seeking comment.

Of 50 cities with populations of at least 5,000 people, Campton Hills ranked fourth.

The rankings were based on FBI Unified Crime Report data, which focuses on violent crimes and property crimes, in addition to independent analysis by SafeWise, an organization that aims to help make homes and communities safe and provides reviews of safety and security products.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Kane County’s no-refusal operation last month stopped 10 impaired motorists from driving on St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon shared the results Tuesday during his monthly meeting with reporters.

No-refusal operations are designed to expedite the booking process for those charged with driving under the influence. Police work with an assistant state’s attorney to quickly obtain a search warrant to compel a DUI suspect to submit to a blood-alcohol level test.

Held from 11 p.m. March 15 to 3 a.m. March 16, this was Kane County’s fourth no-refusal event held in conjunction with St. Patrick’s Day, and the 15th conducted since May 2008.

Sixteen law enforcement agencies – including the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the Elburn, Geneva and St. Charles police departments – participated in the operation.

Authorities collected 10 blood-alcohol content samples, seven of which were breath samples with readings

of 0.103, 0.143, 0.150, 0.164, 0.191, 0.222 and 0.222 percent.

The legal limit is 0.08 percent.

Three blood samples have been submitted for testing.

The 10 individuals charged with DUI are expected in court throughout this month.

In other news, the state’s attorney’s office received 11 calls on Election Day last month, McMahon said, describing the complaints as “relatively minor concerns.”

Eight of the calls were regarding sign placement, an issue that arises every election cycle, McMahon said. By law, he said, campaign signs must be 100 feet from the last interior door before a polling place, not the building’s entrance.

This means that, depending on the polling setup, signs “could be right at the door of the building,” McMahon said.

Two voters also complained about voting machine malfunctions, McMahon said.

The problems were fixed and did not prevent anyone from voting.

The final complaint was about a 17-year-old trying to register to vote, McMahon said, referencing a complaint from Leslie Juby, a Geneva School District 304 Board member, about her daughter’s experience.

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Approve the pipeline To the Editor: The Illinois public needs to increase pressure on the White House to approve the Keystone XL pipeline. Despite the recent State Department report concluding that the pipeline would not impact climate change, the Obama administration continues to stall approval of the project, citing environmental concerns. Illinoisans need to be concerned over the delay because it threatens our economic recovery efforts.

According to the State Department, project spending would support approximately 42,100 jobs and $2 billion in earnings. The authors of the report considered not only direct hiring by Keystone, but also a range of factors, including workers’ spent wages, to determine the net impact on the workforce. Many Americans are already in line to benefit from the project, which is estimated to contribute $3.4 billion to the U.S. GDP. Illinoisans would be missing out on a vital economic opportunity if the project isn’t approved.

There is increasing bipartisan support for this initiative. I would urge concerned citizens to add your voice. Please reach out to your U.S. House and Senate representatives and let them know the pipeline is vital to our economic revival.

I’m pleased that my own congressman, Peter Roskam, is actively working toward the approval of the project.

Phone-friendly skies aren’t unsafe or annoying

By ADAM MINTER Bloomberg News What would the friendly skies look like if you could use your cellphone on flights in U.S. airspace?

On Wednesday, comments closed on a proposed Department of Transportation rule that would continue the long-standing U.S. ban on inflight use of cellphones, and the response was overwhelming and predictable. “Increased conflict and misery,” predicted one of the 1,760 respondents. “Violence on the aircraft,” surmised another. Members of Congress seem to agree. In February, a House Committee voted to require the DOT to issue a

ban, never mind the public comments.

The sentiment is understandable, emotional and entirely irrational. Currently, more than 4,000 planes globally have been outfitted with wi-fi and cellular service, and the experiences of airlines and civil aviation authorities suggest that phones are no more detrimental to a safe in-flight experience than free wine and beer on international flights.

Take, for example, Emirates, the Dubai-based international carrier that – according to its comments filed with the Department of Transportation – has offered “in-flight voice connectivity” since 2008. During that pe-

riod, passengers have made more than 1 million calls on their own phones with “only two negative complaints registered to date.” Strikingly, of the users of the service, the third most frequent, according to Emirates, are Americans.

This is not just the self-serving rationalization of an airline hoping to earn the right to earn extra fees from passengers stuck on longhaul flights. The results are supported by data obtained during a 2012 Federal Aviation Administration study of 11 civil aviation authorities around the world that allow in-flight calling. The conclusions, far from suggesting an in-flight battlefield, reveal

a far more benign picture: “No non-U.S. civil aviation authority reported any cases of air rage or flight attendant interference related to passengers using cellphones on aircraft equipped with on-board cellular telephone base stations. Passengers complained about the cost of the cellphone service and when the cellphone service was inoperative or interrupted in flight.”

In all likelihood, the cost of in-flight calls is likely to be the most effective curb on the chaotic cabin environment that critics fear. It’s the very reason why, for example, the in-seat satellite phones that appeared on U.S. airplanes in the early 1990s never became

an in-flight problem – rates could exceed $3 per minute.

Nonetheless, due to the U.S. ban, the more than 20 airlines that allow in-flight voice calls must currently shut down those services when they enter U.S. airspace. So far, at least, there’s absolutely no evidence that such flights are any more safe or placid over Virginia than they are over France.

In fact, they’re probably just more inconvenient and less profitable.

The board at its regular meeting voted 5-1 in favor of rezoning a 2.2-acre parcel at 402 S. St. from residential use

to limited industrial use for A&P Grain Systems. Trustee Terry Borg cast the opposing vote.

“I’m very disappointed that the Village Board would do this to the residents of Maple Park, considering 41 residents at the last public hearing 100 percent opposed it for quite a few reasons,” resident Lauri Heyob said.

Heyob was one of 10 people

who attended the meeting and one of a handful that spoke against the rezoning during the public comment portion of the meeting. She and other residents think the rezoning could lower property values and continue noisy activity coming from the business.

Event aims to inspire girls, moms Empowering Girls to Be Super will include a book reading, discussion

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Renee Dee said she is looking for girls and moms to have “overthe-top” inspiration after an upcoming empowerment event.

Empowering Girls to Be Super will be from 2 to 4 p.m.

Sunday at the Sugar Grove Community Center, 151 Main St., Sugar Grove.

During the event, Amy Logan, author of “A Girl With A Cape,” will do a book reading, presentation and discussion with girls and their mothers, Dee said. The event is hosted

by Dee’s organization, Peak for Kids, in partnership with the Kindness Campaign, a community collaboration inspired by Knights Against Bullying.

Participants will read the book with the author, then talk about the book. And while the children are running off their energy, Logan will meet

with mothers about their own empowerment, Dee said.

“We are basically focusing on one kind action can change another life or themselves,” Dee said.

By ANDREA AZZO aazzo@shawmedia.com DeKALB – St. Charles architect Mike Dixon told a group of DeKalb Kiwanis Club members Monday that his time in Ukraine was abruptly cut short.

Dixon returned March 1 to the United States after he was among more than 200 Peace Corps volunteers who were forced to evacuate from Ukraine because of the country’s civil unrest. He had been in Ukraine since March 2011 for preservation and recovery of Ukrainian culture. He was supposed to be there until July.

He described his early departure as emotional.

“There were big hugs, saying we’ll be back,” Dixon said.

“I don’t know if that is ever going to happen.”

The DeKalb Kiwanis Club presented Dixon a certificate of appreciation Monday for his presentation in which he detailed the revolution taking place in Ukraine as well as his work there.

Ukrainians began protesting the corrupt government in November. Peaceful demonstrations took place, some of which involved civilians taking turns playing piano, the country’s symbol of the revolution, Dixon said. Governmental snipers then took to rooftops, turning the situation violent, Dixon said.

Since then, Russia has invaded Crimea, an autonomous region of Ukraine where residents voted March 6 to become part of Russia.

Dixon spent the majority of his time in the city of Vinnytsia, about 500 miles northwest of Crimea. Things are calm now in Vinnytsia, but people there are wary Russian soldiers will invade, Dixon said.

“I got an email from a friend yesterday, and she said, ‘All we can think of is Russia and our border,’ ” Dixon said. “It’s a fear that never goes away.”

Former DeKalb Kiwanis Club president Tarryn Thaden is familiar with that fear. Her daughter volunteered with the Peace Corps in Uganda until 2012. Peace Corps volunteers were housed in a secure facility at one point because of the possibility of civil unrest, Thaden said.

Dixon’s presentation provided a rare opportunity for DeKalb residents to learn what

is really going on in Ukraine, she said.

“We’re learning so much about the country and its frailties and abilities to grow,” Thaden said. “It’s quite different than what we’re used to in the United States.”

While in Ukraine with the Peace Corps, Dixon designed many buildings and restored historical buildings. He is still working on a restoration project for Lubart’s Castle in Lutske, Ukraine.

Some protesters in Ukraine are toppling statues and burning buildings, an area of concern for the St. Charles architect. However, because of Ukrainian children’s poor knowledge of the country’s history, Dixon is hopeful the revolution will educate people.

“They’ve taken away the culture and nationalism. Some things are being destroyed,” Dixon said. “Hopefully, a new nationalism will come out of that.”

St. Charles architect, Peace Corps volunteer describes time in Ukraine

• A vehicle was reportedly burglarized Sunday, March 30, in the 35W300 block of Bonfield Avenue, St. Charles. Police reported a window was shattered and items were missing from the vehicle.

• Jesse M. Acevedo, 19, of the 2000 block of Wessel Court, St. Charles, was charged Wednesday, March 26, with possession of marijuana.

• Ryan S. Acevedo, 21, of the 2000 block of Wessel Court, St. Charles, was charged Wednesday, March 26, with possession of marijuana.

• Matthew A. Dantinne Jr., 20, of the 40W700 block of Fox Creek Drive, Campton Hills, was charged Wednesday, March 26, with possession of marijuana.

He also was arrested on a warrant.

March 30, with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.08 percent and speeding.

They were each charged with stealing $52.95 in merchandise, police reported.

• Matthew J. Gentile, 27, of the 41W800 block of Oak Hill Drive, St. Charles, was charged Friday, March 28, with criminal trespass.

• Daniel Elijah Love, 21, of the 200 block of Grand Ridge road, St. Charles, was arrested Thursday, March 27, on three warrants. The warrants were for the following: aggravated battery; failure to appear in court on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia; and failure to appear in court on a charge of possession of marijuana.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A few breaths after joking about the Midwest League’s traditionally chilly April weather, Kane County Cougars outfielder Shawon Dunston Jr. addressed blanket failure head-on.

“Everything,” Dunston said. “Hitting wise, stealing bases, defense. I haven’t been embarrassed like that, ever, in baseball.”

The 2012 season was the topic, and the catalyst that still drives those memories and Dunston himself was his demotion from the parent Cubs’ Short-A affiliate in Boise to the Rookie League club in Arizona.

That’s not supposed to happen to any prospect, let alone the son of an All-Star infielder who spent 12 of his 18 big league seasons with the Cubs.

Yes, Dunston is a major league legacy, same as infielder Daniel Lockhart, whose father, Keith, is now a Cubs area scout. Had it not been for a late-spring training trade sending outfielder Trevor Gretzky to the Angels, the Kane County clubhouse likely would have welcomed another famous son to the brood.

While both players lean on their dads’ careers to help bolster their own, they also serve as sounding boards for one another.

“I mean, everywhere we go, it’s, ‘Shawon Dunston and Shawon Dunston Jr.,’ and then ‘Keith Lockhart and

Daniel Lockhart,’ ” Lockhart said. “We’re definitely trying to make it just like them, but also kind of make a name for ourselves.”

An 11th-round pick in 2011, Dunston rebounded from a dismal 2012 by batting .290 as Boise’s leadoff hitter last season, stealing 12 bases in 49 games.

He missed 20 games with

a quad injury and will be the Cougars’ fourth outfielder to begin 2014. A newfound resolve suggests Dunston won’t be comfortable in that role for long.

Admittedly immature at the start of his pro career, Dunston, 21, credits a heightened mental approach to helping him regroup. He needed all the resolve he could get

after hitting .185 in 19 games to start 2012, collecting 12 hits against 14 strikeouts.

He called the stretch “the first time I experienced failure,” in part a result of not having a true approach at the plate after operating as a free swinger at Valley Christian (Calif.) High. Dunston looked inward, and is glad he did.

“Your attitude. You can always control your attitude,” Dunston said. “You can’t control you getting hits, but you can control playing hard, you can control being a good teammate, you can control being cool with the guys, being cool with your coaches.”

Naturally, Dunston also channels a strong relationship with his dad, who travels with the San Francisco Giants as the club’s primary instant replay liaison.

As the club enters the final season of a two-year PDC with the parent Cubs, Haug fixes an upbeat gaze on the potential of Years 3, 4 and perhaps beyond.

“We’ve talked about it a little bit already.

It’s definitely on the radar. We’re very optimistic about it,” Haug said Tuesday.

The Cougars attracted 406,152 fans last season despite a 55-80 finish, the worst in club history. Attendance marked a 10 percent increase from 2012, as the Cougars became the first Class-A franchise to attract 10 million fans in July.

Kane County has been aligned with the Baltimore Orioles, Florida Marlins, Oakland Athletics, Kansas City Royals and Cubs since moving to Geneva from Wausau, Wis., before the 1991 season.

“Already, we’re thinking of logos and putting together ideas and things,” Haug said.

Back in the saddle: Eight players spent all or part of 2013 in Kane County, including AllStar left-hander Nathan Dorris.

“Obviously, nobody wants to repeat a level,” Dorris said, “but my job here is to pitch, not to make decisions. So that’s what I’m going to do is just go out here and try to set a good example for these younger guys and, you know, hopefully we can get off on the right foot and have a little bit better of a season than we did last year.”

Manager Mark Johnson lauded the team’s work ethic as a whole, and is confident the group of returners will use this as a boost.

“There’s no time for pouting or whining,” Johnson said.

“There’s alot of people in a lot of jobs who are disappointed with where they’re at. But you just put your head down and go to work.”

Pitching in: Taiwanese righty Jen-Ho Tseng, 19, was set to join the Cougars Tuesday night. A nondrafted free agent last summer, Tseng enters his first professional season with a good grasp of “The Cubs Way,” if not American culture.

Tseng, projectd as the fifth starter, will have a translator who travels with the team.

“For a 19-year-old, he throws strikes with all three pitches, and they’re all three above-average pitches,” Johnson said. “He’s going to have little bumps in the road holding runners and things like that, but that’ll come. But he’s ready to pitch here, I believe.”

Righty Paul Blackburn, a supplemental first-round pick in the 2012 draft, gets the call

in Thursday’s season opener at Quad Cities.

Blackburn was 2-3 with a 3.33 ERA for Short-A Boise last season, striking out 38 and walking 29 in 46 innings.

“We should be good, pitching wise, if everyone just does their own part and just kind of works with one another,” Blackburn said. “I mean, our whole team is good, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Weather the storm: In a clubhouse teeming with Latin American and Californian players unaccustomed to the cold, leave it to Dorris, a Carbondale product, to deliver arguably the best weather-related quip on the heels of spring training in Mesa, Ariz.

“We didn’t have enough room on the plane to pack some of the weather and bring it here with us,” Dorris said, “but hopefully it’ll warm up before long.”

“My dad has been a great influence on me. I mean, he taught me everything I know about baseball and life in general,” Dunston said. “He just tells me to keep it simple, you know. You have good days and bad days. Just remember

where you came from and all works out for the best, pretty much.”

In an outfield ripe with athletes – namely 2013 thirdround pick Jake Hannemann in center field – Dunston looks to occupy the corner spots when needed, usually left field.

Manager Mark Johnson – who managed Boise in 2012 – at first called Dunston “the swing guy.” The label applied

to playing time, but might just capture Dunston’s temperament, too.

“You root for the guys that get in there and just really battle,” Johnson said. “That’s all you can ask for.”

Dunston knows the rest builds from there.

“I’m just ready to improve still,” he said. “Have a good season in Kane County and hopefully be one of the better players in the league.”

After opening the season with a scoreless defensive slugfest against Fremd, the Saints exploded for eight goals Tuesday as East pounded Streamwood, 8-1, for an Upstate Eight Conference River victory.

Despite pounding Streamwood and tying Fremd, Saints forward Darcy Cunningham said she actually prefers matches more like East’s season opener.

“I really like tight games, just because it brings us together as a team, and we have to fight adversity and we really grow as a team,” Cunningham said. “These are fun games because everybody is a part of it and some people aren’t as happy when they’re not playing, but it’s a lot of

East had a two-week layoff since the Fremd match because of a pair of weather postponements, giving the Saints plenty of time to hone their attack.

That – along with a struggling Streamwood team providing the opposition – allowed the Saints to take a giant leap forward offensively.

“We were able to get outside [Monday], it was our first practice outside, so we were able to actually get some finishing going, instead of on the gym floor, we’re not able to finish as well,” Cunningham said. “So finishing

was a big deal.”

Cunningham scored a pair of goals for East (1-0-1, 1-0 UEC River) but the Saints had seven different goal scorers on the day. Shannon Rasmussen, Mallory Mollenhauer, Cunningham, Sophie Jendrzeczyk and Shannon Gatehouse scored in the opening 40 minutes as East built a 5-1 halftime lead before Amanda Hilton and Claire Rasmussen joined Cunningham as second-half goal scorers.

Saints coach Paul Jennison appreciated the scoring balance.

“In the last couple of years that we’ve been successful on the boys side, we’ve had guys

that have weighed in with goals from all over the team,” Jennison said. “I think that generates a lot more excitement in the group if they know that everyone’s involved and we’re not looking for one person. Plus, it makes you a harder team to defend.”

Streamwood (0-5, 0-1 UEC River) cut East’s lead to 2-1 with 22:59 to play in the first half as Sabres freshman Alondra Blanco put one past East goalkeeper Kendra Sheehan.

Sabres coach Matt Polovin said he was actually encouraged by his team’s play despite the lopsided defeat.

“That’s probably the first

time, literally, in history for Streamwood girls soccer that we scored a goal against St. Charles East,” Polovin said.

“And we had quite a few chances. [Streamwood junior Tawny Carroll] … was just smoking their defenders left and right. She was flying by them. She just didn’t have a lot of help.”

Sophomore Alison Chesterfield played the second half in goal for East in relief of Sheehan.

Cunningham, a speedy junior, hopes her two-goal performance is a sign of the kind of season she’s able to produce this spring.

While Tuesday’s rout was enjoyable, Cunningham and the Saints are determined to show they can continue to ripple the net once the schedule stiffens.

“It’s great to score against the Streamwoods and the Larkins and stuff but against the elite teams, I want to be able to contribute,” Cunningham said.

Patience likely needed for Batavia softball The Batavia softball team went 9-19 last year in the first season under coach Lupe Castellanos, and this year’s Bulldogs are less experienced and without graduated standout Katie Ryan.

Factor in how strong the Upstate Eight Conference is in softball, and there’s little doubt the Bulldogs’ prospects this season will be greeted by plenty of skepticism.

But Castellanos insists it’s an entirely different story within the Bulldogs’ dugout.

Even after Batavia managed only one hit in Monday’s season-opening loss to Kaneland, Castellanos said he has no intentions of lowering expectations for his team, which includes only two seniors.

“I want them to have high

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab standards and high goals for themselves,” Castellanos said. “I don’t want to just use the excuse that they’re young or there’s a lot of kids that don’t have a lot of varsity experience. I do have a lot of high expectations as far as how we compete out there on the field. I kind of coach them just like any other group that I would coach.”

That’s an admirable but ambitious approach to take this season.

Six of the Bulldogs’ 14 players are freshmen or sophomores. Batavia’s projected top pitcher, Rachael Lovestrand, is a freshman.

Other than junior Ryanne

Rokos, there isn’t much proven offense in the Bulldogs’ lineup.

All of those factors will make Batavia a decided underdog most times out this season, but that’s fine by Castellanos.

“I don’t expect teams to overlook us but I hope us obviously having a down year last year, probably not a lot of teams are looking at us or kind of worried about us,” Castellanos said. “I’m the kind of coach even if I have a team that’s real good, I like to try and stay under the radar, not to try to sneak up on teams, but I feel like when you put yourself out there, you put the bull’s eye on yourself. I’m one of those coaches, I like to fly under the radar and do what we need to do as a team to compete, and let everything else

fall where it may.”

Even with few returnees who have much of a high school track record, Castellanos said Batavia has plenty of talented travel softball talent that is ready to break out.

“I think really the biggest challenge is probably just them learning to play at the varsity level, trying to limit our mistakes, as far as we usually have like one inning that kind of gets away from us,” Castellanos said. “If we can limit that one big inning, I think we’ll have a lot of success.”

This is a tough year to have to teach players to win on the fly.

St. Charles East and St. Charles North are not only favorites in the UEC River but legitimate contenders to advance downstate. If the

Bulldogs can play competitively with the rest of the teams in the UEC River and win a few crossover games against a strong pool of UEC Valley teams, this season would have to be considered a successful bridge to the future.

Castellanos said pushing Batavia softball back onto a winning trajectory will be “a process.”

Credit Castellanos for his reluctance to lower the bar for his team, but this might be a season in which the Bulldogs are best served measuring their progress in ways other than wins and losses.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you with some difficult homework, who would it be and why?

That’s kind of tough. There’s a lot of smart kids on our team. If I had to go with someone, I could go with my thrower buddy, Shane Jorgensen. ... Usually, it all comes down to English or something, and I’d ask Gary Koehring.

Kaneland senior thrower Nate Dyer helped the Knights to a strong showing at Saturday’s Illinois Prep Top Times indoor meet in Bloomington by winning the shot put with a personal-record effort of 55 feet, 8¾ inches. Dyer, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, addressed the meet and more with Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley. Here’s an edited transcript:

ORLANDO, Fla. – The St. Francis baseball team split Tuesday’s doubleheader at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, defeating Fluvanna County (Va.), 5-4, before losing to Bullitt East (Ky.), 4-3.

Matt Kelly pitched five innings of one-hit ball in the opener. Zach Prociuk had two hits in the Bullitt East game.

St. Francis (2-1) ventured to Florida for its spring break trip this season after its 2013 trip to Champaign was canceled due to snow.

“It’s been great for the team being able to do spring training down here and being able to practice,” Spartans coach Rich Janor said.

NOTEWORTHY ’Dogs dialed in again Several styrofoam cups hailing the Batavia football team with a message of “WON STATE” still were clinging to a Bulldog Stadium fence last month.

To that end, a handful of baseball players who were part of the team’s Class 6A state championship run are channeling the remaining November camaraderie. The Bulldogs have big aspirations for the spring, too.

“We’ve just got a lot of Batavia guys,” said senior first baseman Micah Coffey, a Minnesota recruit who quarterbacked the football team.

“We don’t have a lot of guys who didn’t grow up in this area. We’ve got a lot of guys who went through our youth system who have known each

other for a long time.

“As we saw with our football team, it’s easy to bond and it’s easy to play well when you really know the guys that you’re with. So the relationships that we’ve built before we even got here have been huge up to this point. Now it’s just time to translate those into wins on the field.”

So far, so good. Batavia improved to 3-0 with Tuesday’s 6-1 victory against Willowbrook at Wheaton College’s Pfund Stadium.

“There’s nothing stronger than a brotherhood,” catcher Dino Simoncelli said. “If you’re close with your teammates, that’ll lead you, just like football.”

Ray Hunnicutt never advanced past the Baltimore Orioles’ Rookie League affiliate in two minor league seasons.

Released by the club before 2014, he has returned to his alma mater as a volunteer coach with recent experience and plenty of optimism.

“Great to have him along with us,” Central coach Kyle Nelson said. “Upbeat, level-headed. Sometimes coaching is sort of natural to some people, and it kind of comes naturally to him. He’s doing a great job so far.”

Baltimore drafted Hunnicutt out of high school in the 40th and final round in 2012. He signed with the club shortly thereafter, reporting to the Gulf Coast League Orioles in Sarasota, Fla. Hunnicutt batted .163 in

43 games over two seasons, with one home run, 10 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. Nelson said Hunnicutt is attending Elgin Community College and commuting to practices after classes. BC is spending the week on its spring break trip in Myrtle Beach, S.C., enjoying the same warm climes as Hunnicutt did the past two seasons. This week’s flirtation with mild temperatures notwithstanding, many fields around the region need more than a good tilling.

“I don’t know how much frost is down there. I don’t even think we’ve begun to see that yet,” Nelson said.

“Once that starts to come out of the ground, I think it’ll get sloppier.”

Of course, the ‘Dogs want to be pitching, hitting, ielding and running their best once June rolls around, but you can’t go deep in the postseason without building some early-season momentum irst.

How many times have we seen teams with big goals stumble out of the gate? Yeah, three games does not a season make, but B-Town is taking care of business from the word “go,” and that never hurts.

“I’ve been reading about the idea of cyclical lives – it matches up to the idea of string theory and a multiverse,” he says in a deep, dead-serious voice. “So, I wanted to write a record about that instead of another song about broken hearts and drinking.”

Sounds quirky, but this is a powerhouse album where the boldest lyrical ideas are steeped in old-school sounds – enough so that Simpson can still get away with describing it as “a very traditional country record.”

He soaked up those influences as an only child growing up in small-town Kentucky, where he and his grandfather religiously tuned in to “Hee Haw,” where he fell in love with Jennings’ “Dukes of Hazzard” theme song, and where he spent his adolescence mastering guitar licks by Mississippi John Hurt, Robert Johnson and an army of

In his 20s, Simpson founded Sunday Valley, a band that specialized in a striking brand of electrified bluegrass, but couldn’t seem to keep itself together. Simpson left the group on numerous occasions – for a botched move to Nashville, Tenn., for a couple of stints of railroad work in Utah and for some darker chapters he’d rather not speak about.

During his first crack at Nashville, in the summer of 2005, Simpson spent his nights at the legendary Station Inn, hoping to shake the clouds over his head and learn how to become a better guitar player. But when the promise of a steady salary lured him to Utah, it wasn’t enough. Simpson’s wife insisted they move back to Music City in 2010 so he could take another shot.

“People say that it’s this parasitic, opportunistic, leech-based hierarchy,” Simpson says of Nashville. “But there are good, honest people there who will believe in you and will help you. You just have to find them.”

He found one in Dave Cobb, an esteemed producer who’s worked with some of Nashville’s greatest, most trend-averse talents, including Jamey Johnson and Shooter Jennings. In turn, Cobb gave Simpson’s stellar 2013 solo debut, “High Top Mountain,” its winning balance of grit and sparkle. Another fortuitous connection: Simpson’s manager, Marc Dottore, who urged him to release his albums independently.

“You’re gonna go in debt no matter what,” Simpson says of releasing his own music. “So, you might as well go in debt to yourself. Which is scary. But the credibility of being on this label or that label is kind of pointless.”

He says working outside of Nashville’s star-making machinery has allowed him to stake out his own space, and on “Metamodern Sounds,” he sounds like the rarest of country singers – one who’s free.

Truly free. During the album’s opening track, “Turtles All the Way Down,” he encounters Jesus Christ, Buddha, a hit of DMT, an angry God and “reptile aliens made of light.” By the time he reaches the album’s penultimate track, “It Ain’t All Light,” Simpson’s roadhouse holler sounds more like a howl into the void.

It’s a honky-tonk hallucination dotted with familiar signposts – small towns, long roads, empty beds and aching hearts – all held together by a feeling central to country music and life itself.

“The overall theme is probably love, to be cheesy about it,” Simpson says. “You spend all this time reading or thinking or praying or searching or exploring. Maybe there’s an Omega Point of love.”

(Unlike just about every other country singer living on the physical plane, his music cites Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s theory that our universe is evolving toward a supreme, unified consciousness – an Omega Point.)

“And if not, [forget] it,” Simpson says, rattling a dozen milky ice cubes around in his glass. “Just be nice to people.”

Dear Reader: Not all microorganisms (also called germs or microbes) are bad for our health – far from it. Our knowledge of the impact of germs on our health has expanded greatly in just the past five years.

I think of germs in two categories. First, there are the germs that enter our bodies from the outside world and are usually with us only temporarily. Second, there are the germs that constantly live on and in our bodies. They live on our skin, in our mouth, in our digestive tract and elsewhere.

Germs in the first category can sometimes make us sick.

Other times, they are killed by our immune system before that can happen.

For years we have known that many of the germs in the second category – the ones living on or in us – are beneficial. These good microbes help us bolster healthy immunity, digest fiber, detoxify poisons and drugs, and even make some vitamins. So, the answer to your question is that some

In the “old days” (before a few years ago) we thought that most of the germs that live on or in us all of our lives were not affecting our health in any way. We thought of them as just being along for the ride, bumming food and warmth from us.

In the past few years, there has been an explosion in our understanding of the germs that always live on or in us. We always knew there were a lot of them. There are 10 of them for every one of the cells in our body.

There are four main categories of germs that can enter our bodies: viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. Viruses are probably the most familiar.

They are a marvel of biological simplicity. They consist of only a thread of genetic material – DNA or RNA – inside a protective coat. To survive and

reproduce, a virus must penetrate into a cell. Once inside, it takes over the cell’s biological equipment and makes it churn out new viruses.

Bacteria cause many common diseases, including ear infections, strep throat and pneumonia. Bacteria are more complex than viruses. Most of them can live without penetrating into our cells.

There are many different types of fungi. They often live on or in us without causing trouble – unless our immune systems become weakened.

The final type of germs – parasites – are tiny animals that live in or on another organism. Malaria, for example, is caused by a parasite.

In tomorrow’s column, I’ll talk about the remarkable recent discoveries about how germs that live on or in us for all of our lives may profoundly affect our health.

Vehicle incidents are No. 1 killer of young Americans Dear Teens: It’s Saturday night and you’re out riding around with your friends. You are all sober and having a wonderful time. Suddenly the driver starts speeding. You become nervous, but since no one else is complaining, you decide not to speak up. What you probably don’t know is that you’re riding in what insurance companies refer to as the “death zone.”

Between Friday at sundown and sundown Sunday, more than 59 percent of all teen auto-related deaths occur, and a high percentage of those involve speeding.

According to a Farmer’s Insurance report, “The equivalent of an entire senior class at a typical high school dies in automobile accidents every two to three weeks”! And that’s not the worst of it. “During the last decade, 74,000 teenage drivers died on U.S. roadways, more than from all diseases combined.

Motor vehicle incidents are the No. 1 killer of young Americans, and the sad fact is, these deaths are preventable.”

So, why are teens involved in so many vehicle accidents and fatal crashes? A California Department of Motor Vehicles study revealed that the prime reason was that teens speed three times more often than older drivers.

The National Safety Council estimates the financial cost of teenage deaths and injuries at $10 billion annually, in medical and insurance costs, property damage and lost wages.

For teens, getting caught speeding can result in a hefty fine, suspension or loss of your license, and an increase in your insurance rates of up to 100 percent.

At the bridge table, it’s not so much knowing when to play as when to pause.

South is in four hearts. West leads the diamond eight (top of nothing). East wins with his ace and returns the diamond three.

During his pause, how should South plan the play?

The auction is straightforward. North’s one-no-trump rebid shows a balanced hand with 12-14 points. (Discuss with your partner whether it does or does not deny four spades. I like to show my hand type as quickly as possible, bidding no-trump when balanced. But that requires well-defined auction continuations so that responder can check back for a possible 4-4 spade fit.)

South jumps to four hearts, going for game in the known nine- or 10-card fit.

It is easy to play too quickly on this type of deal. It looks so obvious to take the second trick on the board and to start on the trumps. However, here, West wins that trick and plays another diamond, which East ruffs. Then declarer loses two hearts, one diamond and the diamond ruff.

Instead, South should anticipate the danger because, at trick two, East led the lowest extant diamond. And with two cards left in the suit, he would have returned the higher one: high-low with a remaining doubleton.

South must void himself of diamonds so that he can overruff East. The simplest way is immediately to cash dummy’s club ace and club queen to discard his diamond king. Then declarer can start to get those trumps out.

Kaneland High School’s Witt thrilled to go to MIT

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla MAPLE PARK – When he was in seventh grade, Ethan Witt started wearing a hooded Massachusetts Institute of Technology shirt, a tribute to his “dream school.”

Back then, when it was only a thought, the shirt seemed like fun. But when Witt, now a senior at Kaneland High School, started to realize there was a legitimate chance of making that dream come true, he put that shirt away.

He didn’t put it on again until just last month, when he found he was accepted into the school.

Witt is finishing off a Kaneland career that truly stands out. He accomplished a perfect composite score on the ACT exam. He is a U.S. Presidential Scholars Program candidate. As the team captain, he helped lead the scholastic bowl team to a regional championship and a second-place finish in sectional competition. He holds the school’s single-season and single-game tossup records. And as a sophomore, he was in Kaneland’s production of “Les Misérables.”

Ken Dentino, coach of the scholastic bowl team, said Witt’s achievements stretch beyond his academic accomplishments.

Kaneland High School senior Ethan Witt is currently first in his class and recently led the school’s scholastic bowl team to within one win of a trip to the state tournament.

He said Witt has “a winning personality,” and he said if Witt wanted to, he probably could excel in politics. He said Witt manages to be both highly intelligent and “a decent person, too.”

“I think he thinks differently than most,” Dentino said. “He’s not just smart.

His brain works differently. I think that’s what makes him special. … He thinks definitely outside the box.”

Actually, Witt’s aspirations are out of this world.

He is interested in rocketry and spacecraft work, and he said he hopes to help make space travel affordable, “so human civilization can extend off this planet.”

Witt credits his family for playing a key role in his success. His father is an

engineer. His mother, a member of the Kaneland School Board, works at the library at Waubonsee Community College. His older brother, Elliot, helped put Witt on his path, as he also was on the scholastic bowl team, and they both appeared in the musical.

His sister, Erica, is a freshman at Kaneland.

His mother, Teresa Witt, said her son always has been interested in space and science.

“I don’t remember a time where he didn’t know that’s what he wanted to do,” she said, adding that family members have traveled to rocket launches.

The musical participation came out specifically because “Les Misérables” is

kind of the family’s musical.

Teresa Witt said: “They kind of grew up with the music, and they really liked it. They definitely wanted to be a part of it.”

Witt said the first time he saw the musical performed, he thought it “was really amazing. It was my first experience with professional theater. ... When we heard the school was going to be doing ‘Les Mis,’ my brother and I freaked out and said we had to do it.”

Witt eagerly awaits his next step – MIT. He received notification that he was accepted March 14. The email arrived right on time, 5:28 p.m., but that’s not when he found out.

“When I saw it was 5:28, my heart just stopped,” he said. “I could not click the button.” Instead, he said, he watched TV for two hours before a friend called and “said he was going to come over and make me open” the notification. Witt said he finally opened it, saw he got in and celebrated.

And now, it is again safe to wear that MIT shirt.

“When I got accepted, I broke it out and put it on in celebration,” he said. “It really has been for many years the place that was my dream school.”

Kaneland Harter Middle School (KHMS) students have been hard at wo work this year conducting rigorous inquiry-based scientific investigations that in included research, experimentation, and an extensive written science report.

Th The interdisciplinary science unit focused on the development of critical th thinking and problem solving skills. Students explored diverse areas of science an and designed experiments based on their interests. Connections from what th they were learning in school were made and meaningful learning took place be because the topics they chose were relevant to their lives. During the unit of st study, students learned the skills necessary to innovate and to solve complex pr problems. This helped to prepare Kaneland learners of today for the careers of to tomorrow. Students shared what they learned and taught each other scientific co concepts through in-class presentations. They also communicated their results to community members at the school’s annual science fair.

Student experiments covered a wide range of scientific concepts and to topics. Projects ranged from developing and experimenting with biodiesel to de detecting background radiation. Out of these projects, several top presenters fr from KHMS earned the honor to present at the Illinois Junior Academy of Sc Science (IJAS) Region V Paper Session at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Ac Academy in Aurora on March 8, 2014. These students wrote exceptional science reports, conducted complex experiments, and went above and beyond by utilizing computer technology to enhance their presentations for the exposition. Eight of the presenters qualified for the IJAS State Paper Session scheduled for May 2, 2014 at Northern Illinois University.

Matt Gombar, Ava Mandele, Alyssa Nore, and Hunter Smith earned Best of Category awards. Kaitlyn Becker, Brennan Hare, Reaghan Maloney, and Katie Moore earned Outstanding State Qualifier awards. These two groups qualified for and advanced to the State Paper Session. Lexi Abruzzo, Brian Bartholomew, Robert Berrios, Ryan Crimmins, Sandra Gale, Alyssa Lech, Alexandria Montalbano, Ian Stoll, Robert Waldrop, and Rachel Wozniak received High Honors.

KHMS is extremely proud of the students and the level of academic achievement that they have attained. This project supported the Kaneland School District’s mission to graduate all students college, career and community ready. In addition, it enhanced the curriculum, supported STEM education, and helped to build student leadership skills.

The hands on, interdisciplinary project, undertaken by the eighth grade communication skills and science departments, was a success again this year. This was the second year KHMS students engaged in the inquiry-based science unit. Brennan Hare, State Paper Session qualifier stated, “I thought it was a really great experience that will help me greatly in the future. My parents were very proud of me for getting to this point.”
