My Granny and the DAR organization EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Gresey Earlier this year, my grandmother passed away.

I’ll always remember Granny for her love of reading, camping and – at the top of the list – family.

Although my Granny displayed her love of family in many obvious ways, one of the less discernible ways that she showed her appreciation was through her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, a nonprofit women’s organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing America’s future through better education for children.

My Granny was knowledgeable about her ancestors, and that was important when it came to joining the DAR, as prospective members need to prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution to join the group.

Granny used to tell me that I could join the DAR. But – at the time – I really didn’t realize what the organization was all about, and my interest wasn’t very high.

In the wake of my Granny’s death, however, my attitude has changed. I now am on a quest to join the DAR. I took some steps toward that mission earlier this week,

Learn where most food originally came from while hiking through a natural area. Finish the program with a taste of some wild edible plants and go home with a recipe.

Participants should dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. It is for ages 8 and older. Those ages 8 to 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Elburn Lions Club to host book drive ELBURN – The Elburn Lions Club will host a book drive in support of its reading action campaign to combat illiteracy in

which resulted in my attending a DAR workshop at the St. Charles Public Library, which was hosted by the organization’s Elias Kent Kane Chapter.

Before attending the workshop, I had emailed chapter registrar Joan Longmire with some information about my Granny and our family’s American Revolution patriot, William Henry Allgood.

Joan helped get my application started, and – during the workshop – I received some information on how to finish the application from Gayla Steel, regent of the Elias Kent Kane Chapter. Gayla also answered some of my questions about the DAR. “There are all kinds of women in the DAR, and they come from all walks of life,” she said. “I’m very dedicated to DAR. I love it.”

Like me, there were other ladies at the workshop looking to join the group.

St. Charles resident Jean Evans Joyce wants to become a member of the organization in memory of her great-great grandmother, Emma Zeigler Evans, who tried to join the

DAR in 1900 but wasn’t successful, she said.

“I’m doing this in her honor and to make it successful and make it complete,” Jean explained. “I want to thank her.

That’s why I’m doing it.”

In addition, Elgin resident Meghan Reitz wants to participate for various reasons.

“I like being involved,” she said. “Also, I’m a huge history buff.”

Meghan said the women hosting the DAR workshop on Wednesday were very helpful.

Wish comes true in Belize for STC resident

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A 12-yearold St. Charles boy saw Mayan ruins up close in Belize this year, thanks to the Make-AWish Foundation of Illinois.

Connor Milmoe spent eight days in the Central American country of Belize starting on March 29. He traveled there with his family after his doctors referred him to Make-AWish. His adventure included visits to four different temple sites, cave tubing and zip-lining over a rainforest.

“I am just so, so, so grateful that they did this for me, to grant this wish of mine,” Connor said of the trip. “I was blown away [at] just how awesome it was.”

Connor said he became “obsessed” with the Mayans after one of his grandfathers sent him a book about Central America a few years ago.

A trip to the temples was the best way to really see and experience their culture, he said.

The brothers have to get four-hour infusions of

liquid medicine every other week.

Connor and Aidan’s livers and spleens were all six times their normal size at the

time of discovery, their father Mike Milmoe said. Without the medicine, the brothers risk having enlarged organs again.

Mothers’ Club has partnered with Heartland Blood Center to host a blood drive from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Oberweis Dairy, 1790 W. Main St., St. Charles.

The first 30 people to sign up and donate will get a $10 gift card to the ice cream shop.

Participants can schedule an appointment at 630-723-2550 or www.heartlandbc.org. (Find

the Mothers’ Club on the list under the “Blood Drives” tab on the website.)

Those unable to donate blood can participate by making a purchase at Oberweis.

“The doctors told us that we can’t take a vacation from it,” Milmoe said. “It’s basically something that their bodies need.”

Make-A-Wish was honored to give Connor a positive distraction from his treatment, said Jessica Miller, communications manager at Make-AWish Foundation of Illinois.

Connor’s trip is the 12,000th wish granted by the Illinois chapter in its 28-year history.

Miller said the foundation grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. She said there is a misconception that Make-AWish only grants wishes for children that have a terminal diagnosis.

Milmoe assumed his sons’ conditions were taking a turn for the worst when the doctors first mentioned Make-A-Wish, but now he knows otherwise.

The foundation granted Aidan’s wish in 2013 by sending him to the San Diego Zoo to see pandas in person.

“I can’t say enough about Make-A-Wish,” Milmoe said.

“I think they’re a fantastic organization.”

8LOCAL BRIEFS NORTH AURORA – Four North Aurora establishments in March failed a liquor compliance check conducted by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission.

On March 27, the Illinois Liquor Control Commission and the Secretary of State Police conducted alcohol underage checks in North Aurora and Aurora.

Of the six liquor licensees checked, four sold alcohol to Illinois Liquor Control Commission participants.

Police reports: Former 3rd Ward alderman gets warning in crash

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Former 3rd Ward Alderman Ray Pawlak received a written warning notice for failure to yield in an intersection after a crash, police reports show.

No one was injured in the crash, which happened about 3:35 p.m. April 11 at the intersection of Route 31/ North First Street and Hamilton Street, according to the crash report.

Pawlak, 49, of the 600 block of Parker Court, was travel-

ing west in a 2010 Ford F-150 when he struck the driver’s side of a 2002 Honda Odyssey traveling south, driven by a 35-yearold West Chicago woman, according to the crash report.

P a w l a k Ray Pawlak said he did not know why he got a warning notice instead of a ticket. Pawlak said his being a former alderman was not a factor.

“He didn’t know, and I

didn’t say,” Pawlak said.

Police Cmdr. Julie Nash wrote in an email that giving a ticket or a warning for a traffic violation is at the discretion of officers.

Pawlak served 16 years as an alderman until 2011, when he chose not to seek another term.

In a December 2010 crash that involved three cars, Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Burns declined to comment about the difference in citations.

Pedestrian-friendly mall to be constructed GENEVA – A pedestrian-friendly mall will soon be constructed in downtown Geneva near the public parking lots along Campbell Street.

Construction on the decorative sidewalk is set to begin this month, with hopes of being complete in time for the Swedish Days Festival in mid-June.

Features of the sidewalk – which will be in the alleyway between 121 and 113 S. Third St. – will include a border of brick pavers; a communal gas fireplace; a masonry

seating wall; benches; a fountain; and landscaping.

The project is on cityowned and leased property, but the cost is being funded through a state capital grant secured by state Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia.

The Geneva History Museum, which borders the current alleyway, is selling the memorial tiles to be incorporated as part of the design.

ST. CHARLES – A 47-yearold woman has been charged with prostitution in St. Charles, city police said Friday.

Cmdr. Jerry Gatlin said the arrest of Chang-Li Wang was the result of an ongoing investigation that began with a citizen complaint regarding possible suspicious activity at H.H. Health Care Therapy, 525 S. Tyler Road, Unit O.

Thursday, police used an undercover agent to go into the business for a massage, he said.

Wang was arrested after she reportedly offered to perform a sexual act in exchange for money.

Chang-Li She was Wang charged with two Class A misdemeanors – prostitution and violation of the massage licensing act.

Gatlin said the address she provided was the same as the business’ address.

She is expected at Kane County Branch Court at 9 a.m.

Police: Woman, 47, charged with prostitution in St. Charles

Council to vote on firm’s 1st floor presence ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council on Monday will consider a resolution denying a business a first-floor space downtown.

City officials said ALE Solutions does not generate enough foot traffic at the Fox Island Square building, 1 W. Illinois St., to warrant receiving an Office Certification. As of November 2013, the certification is required for business and professional office uses on the

ground floor of buildings in the city’s Downtown Overlay District.

Fox Island Square is within the overlay district.

The city’s Planning and Development Committee on April 14 recommended that ALE Solutions get 90 days to vacate the first floor.

The business is free to remain on Fox Island Square’s second and third floors, according to the city’s summary of the resolution.

St. Charles names pick for new public works director KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Peter Suhr, the city employee who has served as interim public works director for the last nine months, likely has the job permanently, St. Charles announced Friday in a news release.

City Administrator Mark Koenen intends to recommend Suhr’s appointment as director of public works at the City Council meeting Monday.

If approved, Suhr’s new appointment will be effective May 1. He will succeed Koenen, who served as public works director until his appointment to city administrator last year.

“I am confident that Peter will continue to successfully lead the department to best serve the people of St. Charles,” Koenen said in the release. “He has the knowledge and experience to provide the proper

oversight of public works operations and projects.”

A city employee for five years, Suhr served as assistant director of public works before assuming the role of interim director.

He is a licensed architect in Illinois and has 15 years of experience in architecture, construction and development.

He worked as an architect and construction manager in the private sector before joining the city’s staff.

The Municipal Building rehabilitation project and the construction of the biosolids building at the wastewater treatment plant are public works initiatives directed under Suhr’s leadership.

“Mark has developed an impressive Public Works Department,” Suhr said in the release, “and I am glad to be able to continue providing the citizens of St. Charles with timely, reliable, cost-effective services.”

The council’s approval of this plan would mean that the first-floor employees would have to move twice – first to a temporary location and then to a permanent site, Zimmers said.

He already had plans to move employees to a permanent site, but he expected that site to be ready in a year.

Meifert works as a community engagement ambassador for the food bank. Her duties include speaking to different community groups to help spread awareness about what the food bank does.

“I really love building awareness and talking about the food bank and what they do and how they are solving the hunger problem,” she said.

Meifert’s assignment at

the food bank fits in with her background. She earned a dietetics degree from Bradley University in Peoria and volunteered at Loaves and Fishes Community Pantry in Naperville during her summer breaks at college.

“The food bank seemed like a great place to learn more about fighting hunger on a much bigger scale,” Meifert said.

Her duties at the food bank also include grant writing.

She helped a food pantry obtain a grant to build a community garden, along with procuring funding for a donation to the food bank’s BackPack program that will provide 165 children with a backpack full of enough food to feed themselves and two siblings for a weekend.

“It’s to fill the meal gap for children on the weekends who are part of the free and reduced meal program through their school during the week,”

GENEVA RESIDENT WITH DOWN SYNDROME HONORED

He recently was presented with the “Most Volunteer Hours Served” for helping at Marklund’s campus in Geneva. Marklund is a nonprofit organization that serves infants, children, teens and adults with serious and profound developmental disabilities and special health care needs.

This is the second year in a row that Clark has received the award.

April is National Volunteer Month.

“He has a real compassion for helping people,” said his mother, Holly Clark. “They see capabilities in ev-

eryone there. They were very open to him volunteering. He is extremely motivated to doing it.”

Evan Clark has put in 881 service hours at Marklund in about a year and a half of volunteering there. He lives at home with his parents.

“He’s a special young man,” said Marklund volunteer manager Cathy Nikrandt. “He’s just a pleasure to have around. As a friend, you couldn’t ask for a better one. We could all learn something from him.”

His volunteer efforts include helping Marklund clients when they go on community outings.

“He’s really bonded with several different people there,” Holly Clark said. “He is always ready to go when it is time to go. It gives him purpose.

He loves to help.”

GENEVA – For 23-year-old North Aurora resident Michelle Meifert, giving back is second nature.

Since August, Meifert has been volunteering at the Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva as part of her yearlong commitment to the AmeriCorps VISTA program, founded in 1965 as a national service program designed to fight poverty in America.

“I’ve been taught by my parents to always give back to the community,” Meifert said.

She is one of six AmeriCorps VISTA members serving at the Northern Illinois Food Bank this year.

April is National Volunteer Month. As part of her commitment, Meifert puts in as much time as any full-time employee – 40 hours a week.

Last year, the Northern Illinois Food Bank distributed 42 million meals to those in need through its network of food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and youth and senior centers. The food bank serves 13 counties, including Kane

Meifert said.

She also is working to find more funding for food pantries that partner with the food bank. Meifert wrote a grant proposal for two pantries in Will County for refrigeration equipment.

“A lot of pantries are looking to expand because they are getting an increase in clients,” Meifert said. “Refrigeration is necessary for fresh fruits and meats.”

The work of the AmeriCorps VISTA members is appreciated.

“They have helped to spread our message,” said Hester Bury, director of corporate and foundation giving for the Northern Illinois Food Bank. “We have such a big service area. They do a lot of that face-to-face interaction.”

Meifert said her experience at the Northern Illinois Food Bank will help her down the road.

She is considering a career in public health.

And she recommended that others take advantage of the opportunities that the AmeriCorps VISTA program offers.

“It’s a really good way to get your foot in the door in the nonprofit sector,” Meifert said. “It offers you a chance to get a lot of experience above what an entry-level position would be.”

One of our most familiar flycatchers, the eastern phoebe can be seen and heard throughout our area. Although its markings are subtle, the bird’s call is distinctive. Although they’re not the most colorful of the spring bird species (can anything compete with a male blackburnian warbler, resplendent in his breeding plumage?) I just can’t help but smile when a phoebe flies by.

Throughout these many months of cold we have endured, I’ve tried to help my winter-weary friends stay positive. After every new dump of snow I’d point out, in what I hoped was a sunshiny voice, “Hey, at least there are no mosquitoes.”

When another blast of arctic chill would blow in from the north, I’d reach down deep, channel some Shirley Temple cheer, and note that, “Gee whiz guys, at least we don’t have any ticks.”

But now that spring is here, even I have grown tired of my cold-weather counsels.

It’s time, darn it, not only for mosquitoes and ticks, but also for wasps, moths, beetles and flies.

While you may not roll out the welcome mat for these critters, and may even regard them as pests, they are staples in the diets of many of our most-beloved birds. Without beetles we wouldn’t have warblers, purple martins and eastern bluebirds. Without flies we wouldn’t have chimney swifts,

canary-colored male American goldfinch might. But, bless their little hearts, phoebes display one very definitive trait: They dip their tails.

If you happen to see a medium-sized, grayish songbird perched on a branch, look for this distinctive pumping motion. If you see it, you’ll know you’ve found yourself a phoebe.

While you’re watching, be sure you’re listening, too.

Because eastern phoebes offer us one other unmistakable characteristic: They say their name.

The phoebe’s song is a twonote “FEE-be” or “fee-BE,” put forth in a raspy yet emphatic tone. Sometimes the little guys will try to trip us up with a stuttered “fee-b-be” or even “fee-b-b-be” but the message is still the same: “No doubt about it, I’m a phoebe!

(Note: Another common bird in our area, the blackcapped chickadee, also sings a “fee-bee” song. But in contrast to the hoarse-sounding phoebe, the chickadee’s song is a clear, high-pitched whistle easily imitated by humans. Also, we have lots of chickadees in our area. When one sings

FOIA keeps government accountable Our much-envied way of life in the United States, we’re often told, comes at a price.

That reminder usually surfaces as we pay tribute to the brave men and women who serve so selflessly in the U.S. military.

Sometimes, though, the price of making our great society function can be measured in actual dollars and cents. And, make no mistake, without the Freedom of Information Act, this country would not be nearly as great.

FOIA is a law that opens government records to members of the public. It is what empowers citizens to know how their tax dollars are being spent and keeps

government corruption from running rampant at the local, state and federal levels.

Yes, responding to some of the more detailed FOIA requests can be costly. As we reported earlier this week in the Kane County Chronicle, St. Charles School District 303 in December spent more than $16,000 responding to a FOIA request from Kathy Kapusta, a St. Charles woman who sought information related to the district’s use of procurement cards.

We at the Chronicle regularly make use of FOIA requests, and the results make a huge difference in our ability to keep readers informed about important happenings in their community.

FOIA-driven reporting helped us shine light on the inflated enrollment numbers used by Geneva School District 304 that factored into a referendum used to build two new elementary schools and make various upgrades at other schools. Police investigation records obtained through FOIA allowed us to detail the thousands of dollars of unauthorized expenditures made by former Geneva streets superintendent Stephen LeMaire. And our own extensive report about local school districts’ use of P-cards also came through FOIA requests.

Sometimes FOIA requests are met with grumbling from local officials, who tend to

be unenthused about the time and effort required to respond. That’s understandable, but we should all keep in mind that the cost to society of a government allowed to operate shrouded in secrecy would be incalculably higher.

Many FOIA requests would not be necessary if more governmental bodies would hand over basic information upon unofficial requests. But, in many cases, inquiries are not properly addressed unless a FOIA request mandates it, making for a more drawn-out, time-intensive process for all involved.

There are examples of transparency in the area that deserve to be commended. In

2013, Kane County was identified as the only county in the state to score 100 percent for transparency based on the wealth of public information included on the county’s website, countyofkane.org.

St. Charles School District 303 has a helpful section on its website where it lists past FOIA requests and the district’s responses.

But there are many public officials that would prefer their decisions remain unexamined, their expenditures unchecked. Be thankful that the FOIA prevents our country from operating this way. Even when it comes at a substantial price tag, keeping the government accountable is money well spent.

To the Editor: How in the world can the indoor shooting range built for the Kane Country Sheriff’s Office cost $2 million, of which almost half is from cost overruns?

I would think that such a facility would consist of a pretty basic building design.

And because it is a public building funded with taxpayer dollars, there should be no extravagance in the design or furnishings.

So, what items were responsible for the $800,000 construction cost overrun? What could have possibly either been omitted entirely from the proposal or changed significantly after construction began?

If this were a business, the people responsible would most likely be looking for a new job. But since this is a government project, nobody will be held accountable and the last word said about this will be “Oops!”

I’m responding to the Geneva library about “Take a class.” The lady behind the Geneva library [desk] made a comment to a lady using the copy machine. How rude. Come on, Geneva library, fire that lady. To me, that is rude.

Is that the kind of people you want working for your library?

And to this lady having trouble with the copy machine, go to the St. Charles library. They are very nice there. I’ve never heard a rude comment since I’ve been going there over 12 years. Geneva library, how rude you are? The lady should be fired. And to say it loud enough for other people to hear? What kind of upbringing?

What kind of people do the Geneva library hire? There are many people who would welcome a job and treat people with respect.

Where is that now?

In need of hospitality training I’m calling to second the motion

on the person who called about the Geneva library. I really believe the employees, at least the majority of them, would benefit from hospitality training. I’m one of the Geneva residents who go with their Geneva card to the St. Charles library because of the warm, helpful attitude displayed by the staff there.

Paper on porch I would like to thank my Kane County paper carrier, who puts my newspaper on my porch. I live in a subdivision. I have eight units in front of me, and I have the only paper that gets put on my porch, when the other carriers have the ability to do it. My carrier goes out of their way. I’m very grateful.

I live in South Elgin. It’s so much nicer to be able to open my door and grab my paper instead of having to walk out my driveway to freeze my tail off. I only wish the paper would get thicker and delivered on Sundays like it used to.

Freedom of information I was reading “The price of ‘free’ information” article by Brenda Schory in today’s paper, and I am absolutely appalled. And also when the Geneva mayor was chastising an alderman for asking for information. I’m just appalled.

Aldermen are supposed to be able to get information. Citizens are supposed to be able to get information. There is no reason on God’s green earth why we citizens can’t go to any public office and demand to look at the books right there at the office.

We can go through every file they have if we really wanted to. I’m just appalled that all of these public offices are getting up in arms because citizens are finally riding herd on the officials.

I think the Geneva mayor needs to be removed from office if he has no respect for the aldermen who, even if they are curious about what’s going on, ask for information. He has no right to chastise them. That’s good government. That’s what the aldermen were elected to do, ride herd on the city administrators and the people who are spending taxpayer dollars. Freedom of information should be free. We are the government. We are the people. Thank you, Brenda, for keeping this in the forefront. Keep us posted.

Our politicians I am so tired of reading or hearing politicians talk about people not needing unemployment or assistance. I don’t believe the numbers put up for unemployment or people looking for work are accurate. They’re generous to the government, though.

Too many politicians decide their own wages, get ridiculous vacation time, receive outrageous pensions and get prime health care. All this while doing a less-than-mediocre job. Then, when they make a mess (current state of the country), they want to raise taxes or make new ones to stick the public with their mess. How much of the public have these job perks while underperforming and still keep their jobs? None that I’ve ever met. If being a politician isn’t standing there with a hand out while doing nothing isn’t a form of welfare, I don’t know what is. I don’t ever wish bad things on people, but I’d like these politicians to feel what so many have for the last five to six years. They need to work for minimum wage, wonder how they’re going to pay bills and feed their family on that, then have someone tell them they’re not doing enough. Politicians are the best example there is of education doesn’t always equal common sense. They need be refreshed on working for a living and the struggle it is these days.

Thanking others Lately, for many months, I’ve seen lots of people say, “I want to thank so-and-so,” or they write, “I want to thank so-and-so,” and then they don’t say thank you at

Taking advantage It was just reported that the Obamas paid $98,000 in taxes on their income of $481,000. Now that they are in the 1 percent, their federal tax rate rate was only 20 percent. They should be ashamed of taking advantage of all of those tax loopholes and paying such a low amount of taxes. President Obama’s friend Mr. Buffet should be encouraging the president to pay more, to pay his fair share of his federal taxes, instead of acting like a 1-percenter and taking advantage of all of the tax loopholes and paying only 20 percent.

Who wants to work?

Now that tax day is over, is it time for the 48 percent of the citizens who did not [do their] income tax to thank the 52 percent who support their lifestyle.

Thanks to Democrats like Sen. Dick Durbin, the government supplies unemployment and welfare, health care, food stamps, Link cards and many other benefits at little or no cost to the recipients. Is it no wonder why the economy has not improved and unemployment remains stable. Who wants to work when the Democrats will give them everything they want for a vote in November?

I’m commenting on “I am just appalled,” about the 5 percent raises in Kane County. How stupid are they? Don’t they know that, in Kane County, a lot of people are out of work? The real estate taxes are going up. Do they want people to keep selling in here? We are waiting for the prices to go up. What we pay in real estate taxes for the schools is ridiculous. Man pleads guilty to theft, gets prison time A Batavia man who pleaded guilty to theft this month must serve 30 months in the Department of Corrections, according to Kane County court records.

Depree M. Sharp, 29, was charged in December 2013 with two counts each of felony residential burglary and felony theft on allegations he burglarized two Batavia residences – one in the 400 block of Houston Street, the other in the 0-100 block of North Jefferson Street.

Judge Susan Clancy Boles sentenced him to 30 months in Depree M. the Department Sharp of Corrections with credit for 120 days of time served, records show.

A Geneva man caught with 69 marijuana plants on his property last year has pleaded guilty, according to Kane County court records.

Gregory T. Panzer, 59, was charged in September 2013 with producing/possessing between 50 and 200 marijuana plants, a Class 2 felony; possession of 30 to 500 grams of marijuana, a Class 4 felony; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class

Geneva police had reportedly gone to Panzer’s house while following up on a harassment complaint, where they were told that a man’s estranged girlfriend’s neighGregory T. bor allegedly Panzer was growing marijuana in his backyard.

When Panzer came outside, police reportedly inquired about what was grow-

ing in his backyard. Panzer reportedly escorted police to his backyard, where marijuana plants were growing 15 inches from his house and along the eastern fence line.

Judge Karen M. Simpson sentenced him to 24 months of probation and $5,495 in fines and costs. Records indicate he has yet to pay a balance of $3,245.

A Zion man who wielded a knife during a February struggle between two St. Charles sisters must go to jail, according to Kane County court records.

Darell M. Hayes, 26, pleaded guilty Thursday to aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and obstructing identification, records show.

Another charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon was reported as dismissed.

Judge John A. Barsanti sentenced Hayes to 124 days in the county jail for the obstruction charge and credited him for 62 days of time served, according to records.

Hayes also received 18 months of probation and 62 days in jail – with credit for 62 days of time served – for the aggravated battery charge, records show.

He was involved in a disturbance in the early morning hours of Feb. 15 in the 200 block of Walnut Drive in St. Charles, police have reported.

The struggle began with an altercation between two sisters but escalated to Hayes’ involvement with knives, poDarell M. lice have reportHayes ed.

The aggravated battery charges against Hayes were based on allegations that he cut or stabbed a woman’s arm with a knife and threw a knife at another man, cutting the top of his forearm, according to court records.

He was charged with obstructing identification because he gave police a false name and birthdate, documents show.

The Illinois Supreme Court mandates mediation in marital dissolution proceedings and paternity proceedings where the parties have disagreements concerning custody of the minor children, removal of the minor children from the state of Illinois, or regarding parental visitation with the minor children.

The mandated mediation is limited in scope and does not extend to the financial issues that often arise in family court proceedings, such as child support or daycare expenses.

Mediation is when a neutral third-party attempts to work out the issues concerning custody, removal or visitation between the parties outside the court of law. The mediator’s focus is on the best interests of the minor children, not on the best interests of the parties.

The mediator is a certified individual who has attended additional educational classes focusing on conflict resolution.

The mediator can be – but is not required to be – an attorney; some mental health professionals who have decided to expand their practices into this quasi-realm of law are certified mediators.

The mediation process is subject to confidentiality, so the negotiations between the parents cannot be used in court except under limited circumstances, such as if all parties waive the confidentiality.

North makes Bartlett pay North Stars score two runs in sixth to claim victory

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com ST CHARLES – The St. Charles North baseball team scraped together two runs in the bottom of the sixth in ugly fashion Friday to defeat Bartlett, 3-2.

Bartlett looked like it was heading into the seventh with a 2-1 lead in the Upstate Eight Conference crossover after sophomore starting pitcher Tripp Paris got the first two outs of the inning.

But after Riley Coomes walked with two outs, John LeGare’s flare to right field was lost in the sun and dropped. LeGare hustled and barely beat the throw, giving the North Stars runners at second and third.

Freshman shortstop Zach Mettetal’s swinging bunt was then bobbled and thrown wide of first by Bartlett third basemen Trevor Svetic, al-

lowing LeGare and Coomes to score to give North a 3-2 lead.

North starting pitcher Cory Wright struck out Bartlett’s No. 3 batter Jake Barrutia with runners on second and third to end the game.

“I’ve said it before, but Cory is the ultimate competitor out there. He didn’t have his best stuff today but again he’s so dynamic on the mound,” North coach Todd Genke said. “He shuts down the running game, which forces teams to go station to station, and it’s tough to score. “ Before North (9-2, 4-1 UEC River) got some “charity” – as Genke put it – from Bartlett in the sixth, Wright was in line for the loss despite allowing only a pair of earned runs in the fourth. In that inning, Bartlett got a pair of RBI doubles from Svetic and Michael Pfaender that staked Paris to the lead.

Paris, making only his second varsity start, worked quickly, spotting an enticing high fastball up in the zone with two strikes before burying curveballs in the dirt.

North’s lone hard-hit ball came in the second on a deep RBI sacrifice fly from LeGare that scored Joe Kuczek.

After the second, Paris was mostly on cruise control, only permitting one runner into scoring position until the fateful North sixth.

“For Tripp, a sophomore, his second varsity start and to come out and be as impressive as he was and have a quality team off-balance most of the day – he did all he could today,” Bartlett coach Chris Pemberton said. “We wanted to finish our week off strong with three games in three days and the best was our last.

Even though we didn’t come out on top on the scoreboard, we played a quality game.”

Wright only had a pair of perfect innings, working out of jams in all but the third and sixth innings. Three runners picked off at first aided the left-hander, with the last coming in a big spot in the fourth. The Kansas State recruit picked off four runners in a win last week against Neuqua Valley.

After Paris reached on an error that put runners on the corners with one out in the fourth, Wright promptly picked off pinch runner Joe Belford. Cal Fanselow rolled over the next Wright offering to help the junior southpaw escape without any further damage.

In the seventh, Wright issued a walk to Bartlett’s No. 9 batter Cory Krolikowski before Mike Wick laid down a perfect bunt single down the third-base line.

Diversey said an online survey about Central’s conference options was distributed to the community, adding that “if the [survey results] weren’t compelling enough to move forward, then we’d be staying put.”

Central, a school of about 1,090 students, has been mentioned in recent years as a potential target for the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference, but Diversey said Central isn’t quite large enough for the NI Big 12.

The Big Northern will move to 16 schools next school year as Johnsburg and Dixon come

aboard. Diversey said the expansion of the BNC is creating scheduling challenges, noting that between the conference size and tournaments, the boys basketball program only has room for one regular nonconference game next year.

Central’s Fisher takes longer path: Our article this week about the four Kaneland freshman boys who were removed from Geneva’s freshman-sophomore lacrosse team struck a chord with some readers who could empathize with the boys’ plight.

Burlington Central senior AJ Fisher certainly can. As with Kaneland, Central does not have its own club lacrosse team, and efforts to find a co-op arrangement in recent years have proven unsuccessful.

So Fisher joined an independent lacrosse team – the Arlington Falcons – necessitating 45-minute drives to practices and matches. He also has played on other travel teams.

His mother, Karen Fisher, is proud of AJ’s determination,

but wishes he had a simpler path.

“Although he has clawed and scratched his way to play high school lacrosse, all his hard work and effort has not been in vain,” Karen Fisher wrote in an email. “He has also landed a spot on Aurora University’s lacrosse team playing for Kylor Berkman.

… I just think his road to college athletics would have been much easier if he went to a high school with a strong lacrosse program.”

Burlington Central is widely believed to be headed to the new Kishwaukee River Conference, although it likely will be next month before the school solidifies the move.

On Monday, Central’s school board is scheduled to revisit the Kishwaukee River discussions but the board will not take action until its next meeting, Central athletic director Steve Diversey said.

Diversey said he’s not authorized to go into detail publicly yet about the proposed new Kishwaukee River Conference – a conference in which Central is expected to join Harvard, Marengo, Woodstock, Woodstock North and potentially others, beginning in 2016-17.

Central is currently part of the more far-flung Big Northern Conference’s East Division.

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com One year and thousands of miles removed from her jarring experience at the 2013 Boston Marathon, Geneva graduate Rachel Zacchea channeled her emotions into a striking work of art.

A former cross country runner at Geneva, Zacchea, now a junior at Boston College, is studying abroad in Prague. On Tuesday, Zacchea marked the one-year anniversary of the explosion-marred 2013 marathon by spray-painting a graffiti message on the famed John Lennon Wall in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. Her message reads “Boston Stronger, we run together 2014.”

“I knew that I wanted to do something to commemorate the anniversary of the bombings, and a graffiti message on this wall seemed to be perfect,” Zacchea wrote in an email.

“The wall stands for peace and resilience, matching the

strength that continues to be shown by the city of Boston.

I have gotten lots of positive feedback, from people both in Prague and back at school.

Random people were taking pictures of me, and with me, as I spray painted – showing the power the message has to bring people together.”

Zacchea ran a half-marathon in Vienna, Austria, last weekend, but the 2013 Rachel Boston race is Zacchea the lone full marathon she has run. Zacchea raced as a “bandit runner,” unofficially running the prestigious course as part of a group of about 300 Boston College students who were raising money for a school for students with disabilities that is located on BC’s campus.

Unlike many of her fellow runners, Zacchea completed the 26-plus miles shortly before the fatal explosions. After

running the marathon in 3:42, Zacchea was wobbling toward the exit area when she heard a loud boom that she initially assumed was “some sort of celebratory cannon.”

With smoke rising in the area, Zacchea and some friends headed to the hotel where she planned to meet her father, Patrick Zacchea.

That is where she learned of the sinister reason behind the explosions.

“My feelings of excitement and accomplishment were replaced with fear and sadness,” Zacchea wrote. “I am so lucky that I was able to finish the marathon when I did, and so lucky to have had my dad there. We were able to quickly rent a car and drive safely back to campus.”

Three people died and more than 260 people were injured as a result of the explosions.

The experience has lingered in Zacchea’s thoughts often during the past year, especially as the one-year anniversary approached.

Zacchea would have been inclined to run in Monday’s 2014 Boston Marathon if she were in the U.S., although marathon organizers are cracking down on bandit runners this year as part of drastically ramped-up security measures. The Boston Marathon has historically attracted large numbers of bandit runners since it is difficult to gain entry into the official field.

“I was drawn to marathon running because of the amount of BC students who run the marathon every year,” Zacchea wrote. “It seemed like a great thing to be a part of. It raises money for a great cause, and after running

cross country in high school the idea didn’t seem to be too far-fetched.”

The John Lennon Wall gained fame in the 1980s when it became a popular spot for residents fighting communism to scrawl political statements as well as lyrics from Beatles songs.

An economics major, Zacchea considers herself only “averagely artistic,” but she enjoys indulging her creative side when the mood strikes.

She said it took her only about 15 minutes Tuesday to scrawl her “Boston Stronger” graffiti, but it reflected an experience that will remain with her for a lifetime.

Hieber’s game-winning single gives East softball win KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BATAVIA – Batavia senior Colby Green fired a no-hitter Friday as the Batavia baseball team shut down South Elgin, 6-0.

Green walked three and struck out six; the Bulldogs committed one error.

Green said only about half the team knew it was a no-hitter in the immediate aftermath. He found out South Elgin had no hits about midway through the game.

“It was more of a ‘I can’t believe I did this,’ ” Green said of his reaction. “With the great defense behind me the whole game, hands down, I have to give it to them.

They did their job when the ball was in play. It was one of those that was just like, ‘Wow, my first career no-hitter. It just happened.’ ” Pitching to catcher Dino Simoncelli, Green (2-0) said he had ample confidence for the game based on throwing a two-hit shutout against the Storm last year.

Jeremy Schoessling went 3 for 3 and Kyle Niemiec slugged a two-run home run to lend offensive support for the Bulldogs (9-1, 5-0 UEC River) in the Upstate Eight Conference crossover.

The game was moved to an 11 a.m. start because of Good Friday. Green, who switched his college baseball plans from Upper Iowa to Triton College a few weeks back, said he planned to celebrate the no-hitter on the golf course with some friends.

“I haven’t golfed in a while, so we’ll see how that goes,” he said.

“He blocks well, throws well, receives really well,” Johnson said.

“So it’s more of just the mental. Pitch calling and when to take mound visits and things like that.”

The finer points of catching are an easy clubhouse conversation topic when so many players have at least a working knowledge of the position.

“We talk about things. We’re friends. We talk about how to help each other out a little bit. Just let things happen,” said Brockmeyer, the highest-drafted of the full-time catchers as a 16th-round pick in 2013.

Hankins, an 11th-round selection

last summer, played second base during the early stages of his collegiate career at Austin Peay before shifting to third. The Cubs drafted him as a catcher, so he figures to see more time there as a season progresses.

“Still working at it,” Hankins said.

“You don’t want to get away from it.”

GENEVA – A Mayan calendar probably will be on the premises should the Cougars resort to an emergency catcher this season.

While Will Remillard and Ben Carhart split the bulk of the duty, infielder Jordan Hankins starts behind the plate about once a week. Then there’s Cael Brockmeyer, who’s nearing the end of his stint on the disabled list and itching to join the rotation.

None of these backstops are perfect, of course, and that’s the idea behind this unique setup. Remillard missed last season with a back injury, for one, while Carhart converted from the infield during the offseason.

“I mean, I’ve made mistakes, pitchers have made mistakes, everybody has made mistakes,” Remillard said.

“But we’re learning from them, and we’re still winning games.”

The Cougars entered Friday’s game at Dayton on an eight-game winning streak while largely flying in the face of that old baseball adage about being consistent up the middle.

Manager Mark Johnson, a former Major League catcher who began his career with the White Sox, has helped steel the growth process along with hands-on pitching coach David Rosario.

Johnson, just 38, played in the bigs as recently as 2008 with the St. Louis Cardinals.

“Those guys, they’re just there for you,” Remillard said. “When you make a mistake, they pull you aside and they let you know what to do differently and maybe what to do next time, and you learn from that.”

Carhart played in 112 games with Advanced-A Daytona last season, hitting .247 while shuttling between first and third base.

That experience and an eager demeanor – “Ben’s a baseball rat,” Johnson said – eased the Cubs organization’s decision to see where Carhart stood at a new position.

DAYTON, Ohio – The Kane County Cougars had their eight-game winning streak come to an end Friday after falling, 9-0, to Dayton.

The Dragons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and built the advantage to 3-0 in the second.

Phillip Ervin brought home the game’s first run with a groundout and Sebastian Elizalde doubled home Jeff Gelalich in the first.

Then Carlton Daal tripled to bring home Joe Hudson in the second.

A two-out walk to Elizalde kept the fifth inning alive and Tanner Rahier made Cougars’ starting pitcher Juan Paniagua pay. Rahier sent the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for a two-run blast and a 5-0 Dragons advantage.

What’s the morale around the team?

Yeah, I feel really confident with our team this year.

We only lost one player from last year and then we got a lot of new recruits and a lot of people that really stepped it up from JV last year. So, I mean, we’ve got lots of great potential and we should be doing well this season.

You’ve been playing tennis since your youth. Are you like a racquet whisperer or something like that?

we had Justin [Bowman] my previous three years. I didn’t have any room in singles, so I kind of [figured], ‘Well, I either play doubles, or I don’t play at all.’ So because of that, I’ve been playing doubles all four years, and that’s just kind of training me to do this.

Are you looking to play beyond high school?

Unfortunately [no]. I’m choosing engineering as a career, and I just don’t really see time in that. I’ll definitely play intramurals and with friends and stuff. ... I’m going to Ohio State University.

Is tennis in your blood beyond Jaci?

Hmm. I notice you didn’t say The Ohio State University.

St. Charles East senior George Spoerl says he’s been playing tennis “ever since I could walk.” His younger sister, Jaci, a member of the Saints girls tennis team, knows the feeling. George Spoerl’s passion for the sport was evident when he caught up with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley for the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat.

It’s not hard to do, these days, as the truth is ever-more in our faces about the crud, including MSG (It’s not just at Chinese restaurants, folks; you’d be amazed at where they stick it!), pesticides and GMO’s contained in so many of the foods and brands we’ve long trusted and consumed.

I’m not just talking about fast food.

That’s a no-brainer. I’m talking about everything else, including school lunches.

And there’s nothing sweet about it, as it turns out, when you actually begin reading labels and asking questions.

Who really wants that garbage in their kids’ growing bodies, mucking things up?

Not me.

What a pain in the neck. To be honest, I’m a slacker at my core. All this extra work just makes me cranky, but you gotta do what you gotta do. You don’t have to tell me twice about the potential consequences of all of the junk our society has long fed our children.

No, I really don’t obsess about what goes on in my kids’ friends’ homes when they’re there, or fret about the occasional treat or garden bounty offered by a loving friend or neighbor, but geesh, when it comes to making choices about what goes

on my own table every night – or in my Halloween trick-or-treat bowl, or in my kids’ Easter baskets? Yep, it’s about time they got a makeover, too.

To be honest, I’m not 100 percent sure what’s going in my kids’ baskets as I’ve been stashing stuff in my closet like a squirrel. Just like I do every Christmas Eve, though, tonight I’ll drag it all out and see what’s what. And just like I do at Christmas, I’ll probably end up belly laughing about the odd stuff and duplicates I picked up.

I’m sure there will be a few surprises, but they’ll be good ones, this year. But I’m not a total killjoy. A little sugar is definitely in the mix.

Not so much for my teenage son, though, as he’s become quite the authority on what builds a good body. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d ever hear him utter the phrase, “Wow, I had no idea mushrooms were so good for you.”

Once you have completed adding seeds to the tape, allow the glue to dry completely.

Once dry, roll the seed tape onto the toilet paper roll or gently fold and place in an envelope. Store in a cool, dry place until you are ready to plant.

Prepare the bed by adding some compost and gently tilling the top 6 inches to 9 inches of soil. Adding compost each year will break down the clay so prevalent in our Midwest soil.

How to make a seed tape It appears winter is hanging on a bit longer as I look at snow covering my crocuses and tulips. Since I am anxious to do anything gardening, and I’m unable to work snow-covered soil, I decided to make my own seed tapes. When the soil is ready, so am I. Seeds that work well for seed tapes are fine seeds such as those of beets, carrots, radishes, kale, lettuce and chard.

The items needed include seeds, single or double ply toilet paper, toilet paper roll, water-soluble glue, ruler and marker.

Measure out a length of toilet paper – 4 feet is a good length. Cut in half lengthwise.

Mark seed spacing according to directions on seed packet. Use a marker to mark each spot for a seed. Put a dot of glue on each mark and using a tweezers or your finger, drop the seed into

eggs (haha), his favorite Trader Joe’s jerky (Awesome – no nitrates or MSG, but it does have nasty caramel coloring.

Yes, celebrating new life with smarter treats may require a few extra bunny hops, but it seems it can be done.

And that’s sweet, if you ask me.

Music groups to present Operatic Treasures KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – The Fox Valley Orchestra, Fox Valley Chorus and the Aurora University Chorale will join forces for Operatic Treasures on Sunday, April 27, in th Crimi Auditorium at Aurora University to perform favorite opera choruses.

The concert will take place at 3 p.m.

The orchestra – under the direction of Dr. Colin Holman – and the chorus – under the direction of Dr. Lisa Fredenburgh – will fill the hall with the sounds of operatic favorites, including Verdi’s “Aida” and “La Traviata,” Donizetti’s “La fille du Regiment,” Weber’s “Der Freischutz,” Wagner’s “Lohengrin” and “Bizet’s Carmen.”

Featured soloists who will grace the stage for the performance include Sarah Holman, Joshua Baum, Mark Plummer and Kelli Finn.

Also on the program is Michael Zyzak, the firstplace winner of the Fox Valley Orchestra Youth Concerto Competition. At 12 years

of old, Zyzak was the unanimous winner of the David Popper Cello International Competition in Hungary, and currently studies with Richard Hirschl, cellist for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and faculty member at the Music Institute of Chicago.

Now 16, he recently won the first prize at the Rising Stars Southeast Missouri Competition.

Sarah Holman is an internationally-known clinician and faculty member at the Wheaton Music Conservatory at Wheaton College. She has appeared with Opera Southwest, Lyric Opera Cleveland, DuPage Opera, Muddy River Opera, Chicago Chamber Opera, City Opera of the Quad Cities and Kansas Opera. Holman recently returned from Changhua, Taiwan, where she was a featured artist and master teacher with the Southern Young Artist Opera Project.

To plant, lay the seed tape on the surface of soil. Gently cover with the proper amount of soil or compost. Gently pat the soil so there is good contact between the seed and soil. Water using a fine nozzle to avoid washing away the soil from the seed tape.

A trick to keep the soil moist is to cover with an old board.

Once the seeds begin to sprout, remove the board.

Playing with seeds and getting ready for planting at least feels a little bit like gardening – even if it is indoors.

I’m ready for planting, let’s get this party started!

Vinyl or vinyls? On Record Store Day, collectors can’t seem to agree

By CHRIS RICHARDS The Washington Post Before the Internet, record stores provided the three-dimensional turf necessary for big nerds to have huge arguments over tiny things.

That’s one of the reasons Record Store Day – an annual salute to brick-and-mortar record shops taking place coast-to-coast this Saturday – is worth celebrating. Sure, there’s a door-busting retail element to the event that frazzles store owners, but Record Store Day ultimately reminds us that we still have gathering places to debate which Funkadelic album has the sickest guitar solos.

But in recent years, one of the itchiest record store disputes has been generational. And it hasn’t been about music. It’s been over a word.

Vinyls.

Step into a record store any other day of the year, and you’ll probably witness something like this: A whippersnapper comes bouncing in, asking if there are any Rolling Stones “vinyls” for sale. The clerk cringes. Older customers roll their eyeballs skyward and skullward.

Those beautiful black circles are called records. Or LPs. “Vinyl” is acceptable, but never “vinyls.”

Last month, during the South By Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, I popped into Waterloo Records, one of the most smartly-stocked record shops in the country. At the register, they were peddling refrigerator magnets touting the law of the land: “THE PLURAL OF VINYL IS VINYL.” I let out a smug chuckle.

Record Store Day – an annual salute to record shops taking place coast-to-coast – will take place Saturday, April 19. records/vinyls. She read the magnets’ decree out loud, then scrunched her face with confusion.

Could you blame her? As a format, vinyl nearly disappeared in the late ’80s, only to come creeping back in recent years.

In January, Nielsen Soundscan reported that sales of vinyl records in the U.S. jumped from 4.5 million in 2012 to 6.0 million units sold in 2013. That means something once practically obsolete has become brand new to a generation of music enthusiasts and they’re using their English-speaking instincts to talk about it.

Think about it. If you enjoy listening to music on the cassette format, you collect cassettes. If you enjoy listening to music on the CD format, you collect CDs. And if you enjoy listening to music on the vinyl format, you collect vinyls, right?

Nooooooooo, cry the

Record Store Day is a celebration of vinyl, which nearly disappeared in the late ’80s. grizzled record collectors and shop lurkers (like me) who helped keep places like Waterloo afloat for years before vinyl made its flashy comeback. The plural of vinyl is vinyl!

So is it?

Language Log, a blog dedicated to language and linguistics, went bounding

into these weeds two years ago and came back with some very interesting results.

First, the blog’s co-founder Mark Liberman tried to discern whether “vinyl” qualified as a mass noun, sometimes called an uncountable noun. These nouns – such as cheese, beer and wine – refer “to stuff that comes in variable but conceptually undifferentiated quantities that are measured rather than counted,” Liberman wrote.

But Liberman also asserted that mass nouns could be put through a process he called countification, “whereby the plural form of a mass noun can be used to refer to more than one type or instance of the named category of stuff.”

Which is why nobody gives us funny looks when we talk about different kinds of cheeses, beers and wines. “Vinyls” seems to fit nicely into that group, doesn’t it?

Others might consider “vinyl” to be a zero plural – a plural that’s identical to its singular form, such as deer, fish, scissors and buffalo – but Liberman thinks otherwise.

Regarding the “vinyl is the plural of vinyl” rule, he concludes, “This is an unusually pure case of peevological emergence, without either tradition or logic on its side, and also (as far as I can tell) without any single authoritative figure behind the idea.”

And who wants to hang out at a record store filled with authority figures, anyway?

Shouldn’t the local record shop be a place where young radicals can defy their cranky, language snob elders?

So carry on, kids. Call them “vinyls.” Anyone who loves record stores should be overjoyed you’re calling them anything at all.

Consistent oral hygiene will get rid of bad breath Dear Doctor K: My breath is OK during the day, but when I wake up in the morning, it’s terrible.

What causes bad morning breath?

And what can I do to prevent it?

Dear Reader: Bad breath, or halitosis, is a common problem – especially “morning breath.” (Some people call it “dragon breath.”)

Certain foods can cause bad breath. Garlic and onions are classic examples. Reflux of stomach contents can do the same. So can serious diseases of the liver or kidneys. Infections of the tonsils, sinuses or respiratory tract can also be responsible for bad breath.

But the most common cause of bad breath in the morning are bacteria that reside in your mouth. Like us, bacteria need food to live. They get their food from substances that cover our gums, tongue and throat, and that fill the spaces between our teeth. When bacteria “digest” their food, they make various bad-smelling gases, including sulfides and amines.

These bad-smelling gases are most likely to be produced at night. That’s because during the night most of us do a lot of breathing through our mouth. That causes saliva to dry out, and the dry environment encourages the bacteria to produce more gases.

Any medication or condition that

Halitosis that lasts throughout the day is also triggered by the wide range of bacteria that live in everyone’s mouth. When you don’t brush your teeth twice daily, there is more “food” around for the bacteria in your mouth.

Poor oral hygiene also increases the amount of dental plaque, and bacteria love to live in the plaque. Diseases of your gums and structures supporting the teeth can allow these bacteria to get the upper hand and cause halitosis.

Even when teeth and gums are healthy, dentists suspect that bacteria on the tongue contribute to bad breath.

If you have bad breath, here’s what to do: • Keep the saliva flowing. Drink plenty of water and chew sugarless gum.

• Avoid antihistamines and other medications that dry the mouth, if alternative medicines

work just as well.

• See your dentist regularly and get prompt treatment for any problems.

• Get your teeth cleaned by a dental hygienist at least twice a year.

• Practice meticulous oral hygiene. That means flossing regularly and brushing your teeth – and tongue – diligently.

That’s right, the tongue. Brushing the upper surface of your tongue every time you brush your teeth removes a lot of gas-producing bacteria.

• Avoid foods (like onions and garlic) that you find make your breath smell bad.

• Don’t smoke or chew tobacco.

They encourage the growth of mouth bacteria and irritate the nose and sinuses, making them more vulnerable to infection.

• Use an antibacterial mouthwash.

• Keep breath mints on hand for a quick, if temporary, cover-up.

Finally, relax. It’s simple to reduce bad breath in the morning.

daughter’s B-average Dr. Wallace: In eighth grade I was a straight-A student. Now that I’m in ninth grade, my grades have slipped a little, and that made my mother very upset and angry. My first semester grades were two A’s and four B’s.

For this, I was put on restriction for two months and forced to study three hours every school night and four hours every weekend day. I was told I had to improve my grades this semester or I’d have to go to summer school for six weeks, which would mean that I wouldn’t be able to attend summer camp with my Girl Scout group.

My problem is that the second semester is almost over and my grades are still two A’s and four B’s. I’ve done my best, but for my mother, that’s not good enough. When my report card comes out, I’ll be in big trouble.

My mother was born in Japan, and Japanese people put a lot of pride in being a top student.

She feels that I really let her down.

What can I do to make her understand that I’m not a straight-A student, but that I do my very best in all of my classes? Oh, yes, I almost forgot to tell you that I’m on the school honor roll. – Lei, San Diego, Calif.

One of the offices of success at the bridge table is collection of information, which might involve hand distribution – as in this deal.

South is in four hearts after East opened one club. West leads his lowest club. East wins with his king, cashes his ace, and continues with a third round to declarer’s queen. How should South continue?

South’s leap to four hearts has two ways to win: The contract might make, or he might talk his opponents out of a higher-scoring contract.

South seems to have 11 tricks: two spades, seven hearts, one diamond and one club. And that will be true if hearts are 2-1. But when declarer learns that clubs are 3-3, what must East’s hand distribution be?

There is only one answer: 4-3-3-3. (If he had four diamonds, he would have opened one diamond, not one club.) So South does not have a trump entry to the board. And surely East has the diamond king for his opening bid. What can declarer do?

There is a clever solution.

After winning the third trick, South should cash two top trumps, then sacrifice a heart trick by leading a low heart. East takes the trick with his jack, but what can he do now?

Nothing! East has to lead a spade or a diamond, which gives declarer access to the dummy.

Note that East cannot play his heart jack earlier, because dummy’s eight would become an entry.
