ost days, I find that behind-the-scenes happenings can be just as interesting as what is taking place on a stage.

One of the favorite places I have photographed for the Kane County Chronicle was a backstage area during a ballet rehearsal for “The Nutcracker” several years ago. One of those photos even adorns my bedroom wall.

Wednesday, I photographed a fashion show highlighting job interview-appropriate attire at Elgin Community College. As I surveyed the scene, and photographed the show as it began, I ventured to the “backstage” area and found Eyob Zewdie of South Elgin peaking around a corner dressed in a dapper three-piece suit and tie.

I feel like it’s a great chance to get the subjects off-guard, and in a candid moment.

Arts organization to network during conference

Judge issues gag order in Fiebelkorn case ST. CHARLES – A petting zoo owner charged with animal cruelty and neglect of 94 sick and starved animals won a partial victory in court Thursday when a judge ruled in favor of a gag order on comments made outside of court.

Kane County Associate Judge Elizabeth Flood ordered that employees of Kane County Animal Control and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office are to “refrain from making statements to the media in this case.”

Representatives of those offices also are not to comment to the media about the defendant, Elgin resident Stacy Fiebelkorn, regarding her character or criminal record, the results of any examination, physical evidence, witnesses or expected testimony until the conclusion of a trial, so as not to taint a jury pool, Flood ruled.

Although Fiebelkorn’s attorneys had asked that the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office be included in the order, Flood said the state’s attorney’s office already takes steps to make sure comments follow the rules of professional standards.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Erin Gaeke argued both in court papers and before Flood that restricting Animal Control or sheriff’s deputies from commenting was a violation of their constitutional rights. She said the state’s attorney’s

Gaeke said sheriff’s and Animal Control employees’ comments to media are factual and do not state a belief in the defendant’s guilt.

Fiebelkorn attorney Alexis Costello pointed out contradictory statements attributed to Kane County Animal Control Administrator Robert Sauceda in various publications.

Flood determined that Sauceda’s comments in various publications were made as a representative of the agency, not as a as private citizen.

Since her arrest March 4, Fiebelkorn has given up all of the animals including rabbits, poultry, alpacas, llamas, donkeys, horses, ponies, mini-horses and mini-goats.

Kane County Animal Control impounded the animals from a farm in Hampshire Township and found a dead horse and fetus at a farm on Beith Road near Maple Park.

They also found about a dozen dead animals at the Hampshire location and some have died since.

All of the animals have been treated for malnutrition and other medical problems caused by starvation, and nearly all have now been adopted to new homes, Sauceda said in earlier comments to media.

Fiebelkorn’s next court appearance is scheduled May 15. Court papers show she has neither asked for a jury trial, nor waived her right to one.

Ex-carnival worker gets 25 years for ’08 murder KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com A former St. Charles carnival worker has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for a 2008 murder that occurred after a disagreement turned violent.

Arthur Manning, 63, was sentenced Wednesday. Manning was convicted in December 2013 of first-degree murder for stabbing to death 28-yearold Naromi Mannery of St. Charles in September 2008.

It was the s e c ond time Arthur Manning was Manning convicted of the crime. Manning originally was convicted for killing Mannery in February 2009. In May 2011, the Illinois Appellate Court ordered a new trial.

On Sept. 21, 2008, Mannery was drinking beer on the front porch of a St. Charles home with a friend, according to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office. A short time later, the men went to the side yard of 920 W. Main St., St. Charles, a home the friend shared with Manning and co-defendants

Mannery was told to leave the property because the landlord did not allow nonresidents to be present. Mannery refused to leave, and the confrontation became physical, with Arthur Manning stabbing Mannery three times, killing him, according to the Kane County

State’s Attorney’s Office.

“I just went berserk,” Manning told St. Charles police when he was interviewed after the stabbing. “I don’t like to stop until somebody goes to the hospital or somebody goes to the graveyard.”

According to Illinois law, Manning must serve all of the sentence, but will receive credit for time served in the Kane County jail and in prison. Manning has been in custody since September 2008.

The two co-defendants in the case each pleaded guilty. Guy Manning and Wimberly each pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony, and each was sentenced to eight years in prison.

“This case is a textbook example of why violence is the wrong way to settle disputes,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said in a news release. “When their disagreement escalated, Mr. Manning took matters into his own hands instead of calling 911.

8LOCAL BRIEFS Foundation to host Fox Trot 5K, 10K races BATAVIA – The Batavia Mothers’ Club Foundation will host its 14th annual Fox Trot 5K and 10K race April 26 at the Batavia Riverwalk, Island Avenue and Houston Street in Batavia.

The race features a new 10K route. Both races feature courses along the Fox River in downtown Batavia. Participants can register online before the event or at the event on race day. The start time for both the 5K and 10K is 8 a.m.

There are awards for the winners of both races in all age groups following the race.

The Fox Trot also features a non-competitive Kids’ Fun Run. There are two races designed especially for children.

Preschoolers and children through first grade are encouraged to try the Junior Jog. Second-graders through fifth-graders are encouraged to try the Youth Mile event.

The kids’ events begin at approximately 8:45 a.m.

Registration for all events is encouraged. The advance registration cost for the 5K is $25 a runner, and the advance registration cost for the 10K is $35 a runner. There is no

charge for either Kids’ Fun Run, but a donation of $10 a child is suggested. Funds raised through this event will support Batavia schools and other educational opportunities for local families. McConnaughay opposes permanent income tax hike

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com State Sen. Karen McConnaughay is voicing her opposition to a proposal by Gov. Pat Quinn to make permanent an income tax increase that expires at year’s end.

The increase first was approved in 2011.

She said despite the tax increase bringing in nearly $26 billion in new revenue, little has been done to alleviate the backlog of unpaid bills.

“The first promise you broke, to adequately reduce

the state’s debt,” McConnaughay said Thursday in a meeting with Kane County Chronicle staff members. “The state in the same time period also cut education funding by more than 14 percent.

McConnaughay noted that in fiscal year 2010, the state had a backlog of $8.4

billion in unpaid bills, and that has been brought down to $6.3 billion, a reduction of $1.6 billion since the tax increase went into effect.

“It sounds really good in polling, to want the guy who makes more than you make to pay more in taxes,” she said. “But the reality is that when you look at the states that have the progressive tax, that increase in taxation starts at people making $50,000 or more. That’s not necessarily the wealthy.

North grad dies in Missouri crash

Slinker was a passenger in a car driven by Nicholas Kisereu, 19, of South Elgin, and Zachary Richman, 20, of St. Charles, on their way to visit a cousin at the University Missouri in Columbia, his father said.

Missouri State Trooper James Bava said the four-way intersection where the crash occurred has stop signs for east-west traffic, but northsouth traffic does not stop.

A 2006 Dodge Dakota driven by a Missouri resident struck the 2012 Chevy Cruze driven

by Kisereu on the driver’s side, where Slinker was a rear seat passenger. All were wearing seat belts, Bava said.

“Their vehicle was facing west and turning south or left, and they did not realize the incoming traffic does not stop,” Bava said. “It’s a very haz-

ardous intersection. We work many crashes there, many fatalities.”

Kisereu received a traffic citation for failure to yield, Bava said.

“My sergeant has advocated for signs in each direction warning that traffic does not stop, and that has helped a little bit,” Bava said.

Craig Slinker said the impact was so severe, his son had to be extricated from the vehicle and paramedics told him Kyle was not breathing. Kyle was flown to the University Hospital at Columbia, where he was placed on a respirator, but scans showed bleeding, compression and pressure building in his brain, his father said.

After doing repeated tests seeking a sign of brain activity, the hospital pronounced him dead, his father said.

“We could see him alive, breathing,” Craig Slinker said.

“We could touch him, and he was warm. He was there – though he was not there. And then we chose to donate his organs. ... We will celebrate how good of a young man he was, and how he continues to make contributions even though he is not directly here. He was always a good kid.”

The visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main St., St. Charles. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, also at Yurs, followed by a private burial.

8POLICE REPORTS Kane County Sheriff’s Office • A hit-and-run accident was reported Monday, April 14, at Randall and Crane roads in St. Charles Township. A 2012 Toyota Prius was reportedly rear-ended while stopped at a red light. The offending vehicle was possibly a maroon SUV, police reported.

• A graphing calculator valued at $125 was reported stolen Wednesday, April 9, from Kaneland High School, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park.

• A resident of the 5N500 block of Creek View Lane, St. Charles Township, reported Tuesday, April 15, that she attempted to file her income taxes but couldn’t because someone already filed with her Social Security

number. She told police she believes it was related to credit card notifications she received in December and January about credit cards she never applied for.

Kyle Ryder Slinker was slightly built when he was a freshman at St. Charles North, 5-foot-4 and barely 100 pounds, his family said.

“He had a very good sense of what is right and wrong and to stand up for the little guy,” his father Craig Slinker said. “He was smaller when he was growing up and got picked on – and he still stood up for people.”

His son – the oldest of three boys – eventually took up weightlifting a n d g r e w t o Kyle Slinker nearly 6 feet tall and 185 pounds of muscle by the time he graduated in 2012, Slinker said.

“He was big and strong and just an awesome guy,” his father said. “But he was still very shy around girls.”

Kyle Slinker, 19, died April 13 of severe head trauma following a car crash April 11 in Missouri.

A student at Elgin Community College studying business, Slinker still was living with his family in South Elgin, his father said.

Hartwell, Hunt part of new GOP leadership

“I’m very excited that the party has really healed its own wounds and moving forward in a positive [unified] direction, and I’m really honored and grateful to be a part of that,” said Connie von Keudell, who was elected secretary.

ship team are Kane County Circuit Clerk Tom Hartwell as chairman and Kane County Auditor Terry Hunt as treasurer.

They were elected to the two-year terms during the biennial Kane County Republican Convention at the Bliss Tom Creek Golf Hartwell Course in Sugar Grove.

East Dundee Trustee Allen Skillicorn was also appointed

vice chairman.

Hartwell said he views his position as another opportunity to serve.

“I think we’ve got a really good team put together, so we can make improvements and serve the people,” he said.

Hunt said he is excited to be part of Hartwell’s vision for the party, which includes getting people involved where they have the most interest and the most natural strengths.

He said the Kane County Republicans will be heavily involved in supporting the GOP candidates in countywide rac-

Did you use a unique one for every site – every bank account, every email address, every music-streaming service, every social media profile and so on?

Congratulations! Your information still isn’t safe.

That’s because passwords, by themselves, can’t make it safe.

Every company is vulnerable to digital intrusions. By one estimate, 97 percent of Fortune 500 companies have been hacked. And stolen passwords, according to a

report last year from Verizon Communications Inc., are usually the way in.

True, people tend to use dopey passwords (the most popular password of 2013 was “123456”). But hackers can now overcome even “strong” passwords. They can use powerful algorithms to break down probable combinations, install malware on your computer to log keystrokes, lure the unsophisticated to fake login sites, exploit account-reset mechanisms, and on and on.

Is there a better approach?

The short and sad answer is no. The slightly less short and sad answer is not yet.

Although security technology is growing more sophisticated, it’s still flawed. Twostep verification – in which a site sends, say, a text message

with a code to enter before allowing users to access their account – is an improvement.

But it’s also vulnerable to hacking.

Then there’s a growing assortment of biometric devices: iris scanners, fingerprint detectors, palm-print readers, heartwave sensors and more.

Motorola has even toyed with the idea of an ingestible pill that would send out electrical signals to identify you.

These would seem like more plausible hindrances to hackers than pairing your email address and your cat’s name for authentication.

But all these approaches will require some familiar tradeoffs – the more secure, the less convenient; the better the protection, the more privacy you relinquish.

And any biometric data that are stored in the cloud, or on a company’s servers, are as vulnerable to hacking as passwords are. Worse, most people have only two eyes and 10 fingerprints. Once the mathematical representation of someone’s biology is exposed, it can’t be unexposed or easily changed. The problem of “reuse” – the tendency to employ the same password on site after site, as every normal person does – would only be exacerbated if everyone relied on their index fingers.

So, there is no one solution to online security, in other words, and there may never be. Where does that leave us?

A combination of many solutions – while cumbersome, irritating and intrusive — is probably the best the

world can hope for anytime soon. Internet companies can help by making wider use of algorithms that parse behavioral characteristics – where users are, what kind of device they’re using, what time of day they’re attempting to log on – to make a (very) educated guess whether someone’s been hacked, not unlike how credit card companies try to detect fraud.

Used in combination with other security measures, such as biometrics and passwords, such techniques could make it a lot harder to impersonate someone online.

Companies and users alike also need to focus more on recovery plans and damage control, for when even the best security fails. As it inevitably will.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Understand the facts To the Editor: Township government provides essential services across Illinois and does so more cost effectively than larger units of government.

There has been an aggressive push to eliminate township government in Illinois, often based on information that is simply not true. If townships were to be eliminated, a recent study by respected public policy researcher Wendell Cox finds that replacement services within larger government bodies would end up costing taxpayers more, not less.

There are three main functions of township government: 1. Providing general assistance for those in need, including food, shelter and emergency relief; 2. Assessment of real property for the basis of local taxation; 3. Maintaining 71,000 miles of

roads and bridges outside federal, state and local jurisdiction, including repeatedly clearing rural roads as snow and ice storms seemed to continuously roll through the state this winter.

Along with these three mandated core services, townships offer other agendas, including senior citizen programs; youth activities; assistance for the disabled; parks and recreational facilities; health services; and cemetery maintenance.

Township government is indeed important; Illinois cannot afford to have these critical services eliminated or delivered at a higher cost. Before any voters consider elimination of township government, let’s first understand the facts about what would be lost.

GENEVA – Kane County leaders need to better determine what they want to do regarding facility improvements.

That was the message from Administration Committee Chairman Ron Ford, D-Aurora, Thursday after the group decided to switch directions on a roofing project for a county building in downtown Geneva.

Staff solicited bids for a roof replacement project for 401 Campbell St. in Geneva – a 1970s building just yards away from the Kane County Courthouse that is used as office space.

The lowest bid – $59,850 – was presented to the committee last month, but the committee held the item for a month.

County Board member Phil Lewis, R-St. Charles, said he was glad for the extra 30 days because he was able to tour the building, which, he said, “is definitely in need of work.”

Instead of replacing the roof, Lewis suggested the county hire an architectural

firm to do a cost-benefit analysis of remodeling the one-story structure, possibly with a second story.

“That would be great if we had the money to do that,” said board member Theresa Barreiro, D-Aurora. “Just last month, we were worried about $60,000, and now you want to redo the whole building.”

Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, agreed with Lewis in that he wouldn’t want to invest tens of thousands of dollars in a building that might not be around long-term.

He suggested going with a third option of making $9,200 in roof repairs, which would buy the county some time to decide.

The committee directed staff to pursue that option after a motion to accept the nearly $60,000 bid failed, 3-2.

At some point, Ford said, board members need to figure out the improvements to the county buildings so employees’ time won’t be wasted in soliciting bids for projects that won’t be pursued.

“I believe we need to get more ahead of the game,” he said.

SUGAR GROVE – A habitat restoration work day will be from 9 a.m. to noon April 26 at Bliss Woods Forest Preserve, 5S660 Bliss Road, Sugar Grove.

Work continues on Geneva sidewalks GENEVA – Work resumed this week to remove sidewalk trip hazards in the Fisher Farms subdivision on Geneva’s west side.

The city’s contractor, Safe Step Corp., will be grinding uneven sidewalks that are raised 0.25 inches or more.

Residents may hear some

short-term pavement grinding noises, but crews will clean up residue created by leveling the sidewalk blocks.

Work on the Fisher Farm sidewalks began on the south end of the subdivision last spring and will continue north this year as funding remains available.

BATAVIA – Local high school students can gain more knowledge about a variety of careers at Fermilab’s seventh annual Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Career Expo, which will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“We hope that this will give students a chance to better think of themselves in one of these future careers and also have their vision expanded,” said Susan Dahl of the Fermilab Education Office, one of the organizers of the event. “They might better imagine themselves as an acoustic engineer, if that’s what they desire.”

The expo, which will be in the atrium of Fermilab’s Wilson Hall, is free and open to all high school students.

Fermilab’s public entrance is at the intersection of Kirk Road and Pine Street in Batavia.

The event is being planned collaboratively by the Fermilab Education Office and guidance and career counselors from high schools in Kane and DuPage Counties, Dahl said.

“This started because some guidance counselors in Kane County asked us if we would host the event,” she said. “I think they thought we were a good example of how STEM functions.”

Last year, about 800 students attended the expo, and Dahl said she expected a similar number this year.

Almost 140 professionals will be at this year’s expo, including Fermilab scientists and engineers, along with professionals from several local companies and research organizations.

After more than 11 years of Democratic control, Murphy said it was time for “an alternative vision” of lowered tax rates.

ton, said in his experience on the Senate Appropriations Committee, it seemed there was “no middle ground” for compromise in Springfield, such as enacting a budget freeze.

“We [Republicans] like to look on the cost side of things,” he said. “In Springfield, it’s revenue first, cost second – if at all.”

Connelly said there also are several key business issues, such as Illinois’ high worker compensation policies, that are costing Illinois in ways that include the 2013 departure of Office Max from its Naperville headquarters in Connelly’s district.

Addressing the state’s $100 billion pension shortfall also was a hot topic at the meeting.

Murphy said if the Illinois Supreme Court finds the latest pension reform solution unconstitutional, the state government would likely have to turn to a state amendment.

Currently, the constitution says the benefits of state pensions and retirement systems “shall not be diminished or impaired.”

“You’re not coming up with $100 billion,” Murphy said.

Talk at the media event largely revolved around Democratic revenue solutions and the business climate of the state of Illinois.

To improve the “horribly unfriendly environment” for businesses in Illinois, U.S. Senate candidate and current state senator from Sugar Grove Jim Oberweis said state government should be cutting taxes and reducing costs to attract current and future economic growth.

“The idea that we should be approaching is how can we take a smaller piece of a bigger pie instead of constantly trying to take a bigger piece, which is making the pie that much smaller,” he said.

Murphy pointed out Illinois would have to devote three years of its current record-high $35 billion budget to fill the backlog.

Kirk Dillard, a senator from Hinsdale and former gubernatorial candidate, also pointed to state education funding as a major issue facing suburban General Assembly members next year. Recently, there has been a serious conversation in Springfield about the inequality of school funding between downstate, Chicago and collar county schools.

“I’m all for helping a child in Chicago or Cairo, I just want to make sure that suburban schools – which are the strength of the quality of life we have here ... are not dumbed down in the process of school funding reform in Springfield,” Dillard said.

Dress, flowers, hair – all part of a huge social event

atavia parent Michelle Rush describes her two daughters’ prom nights as a highlight of their high school years. She remembers that they looked beautiful, and had “a big smile on their faces.”

In order to get to that point, however, there was a lot of work, she said. There were trips “all over the place” to get the perfect dress. They had to get their hair and nails done at beauty salons. They had to arrange for flowers. There was the jewelry and the shoes to select. By the time it was all done, she figured the cost was about $800 for each kid. Her youngest daughter graduated last year.

“I think the moms I talked to kind of felt the same, that this is a crazy amount to spend for one evening,” Rush said. “But you don’t want to be the mom who says, ‘You can’t get the dress.’ … You bite the bullet and do it.”

The prom experience in the Tri-Cities and Kaneland area can vary, depending on how each student approaches the big night. But at each school, the event remains significant, and it’s an occasion for which students do go out and get special attire.

As far as the price, that appears to be going down, at least according to a national survey conducted by Visa, although the national average of $978 exceeds even the “crazy amount” described by Rush. The average spent on prom in the Midwest, according to the survey, is $835. According to Visa, the average American household spent $1,139 on prom last year. Nat Sillin, the head of U.S. financial education for Visa, said he considers a reduction in prom costs to be a good thing.

“Hopefully, it’s down because folks have come to their senses,” Sillin said.

Geneva High School senior Jamie Maher, executive board president of the school’s student council, stressed that her school’s tickets include a bus ride to the school’s chosen prom venue – the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Also, it includes a post-prom party. All students who participate are required to take the bus, which can increase safety, since students are much less likely to drive drunk. ‘NOT GOING TO GO HOG WILD’ Janet Wallace has six daughters. Three are done with their prom experiences, but the fourth, Sophie, is going to Kaneland’s prom this year. Wallace said her daughter’s prom experience will cost about $285. That’s with Sophie wearing a dress that had been worn by an older sister. She won’t rent a limo. Wallace said she doesn’t think she’ll be the only one watching costs for the prom.

“I just don’t think people are going to be spending what they did years ago,” she said.

“They’re not going to go hog wild. … You can look just as nice without spending a lot of money.”

She said the dress her daughter will wear “is gorgeous. … She’s borrowing her sister’s dress, but it looks like

Wonders in Geneva, prom is one of the busiest times of the year. Eva Kamieniak said she mostly deals with the guys and their parents, since they are the ones ordering the flowers and corsages. She said it’s important to “match the colors exactly,” and this year has been a challenge.

She said coral is a big color this year, and “coral is a very hard color to match.”

She said each year, she’ll check with schools on when proms are scheduled.

“We wouldn’t take any other big events on the same day,” she said.

Then there is the way guys will ask girls to the prom.

Rush said she remembers: “It used to be just passing in the hall. … Now you have to come up with some elaborate way to ask the girls. I don’t think you get wedding proposals that are as elaborate.”

At Geneva, Maher said she was asked to prom by a barbershop quartet.

“I thought it was great … they were very good,” Maher said.

Then there is the venue and the post-prom party.

Mary Keyzer, the co-activities director for prom at Geneva High School, said officials there decided years ago to “kind of soup up prom and take it downtown.” But she said that homecoming is also a big event, with greater participation. Prom is special, however, because it’s not as open of an event, often restricted to juniors and seniors and their dates.

At Kaneland, Roach said it’s an experience that should not be missed, adding, “to me, it’s a big deal.” And Rush said that, despite the ordeal to run around to get dresses for her daughters and all the cost that goes along with it, that it’s a night they always will remember.

“They had a ball,” Rush said. “That’s why you do it, right?”

Maher said she will wear a dress that “wasn’t terribly expensive.” Told that the Midwest average according to Visa’s survey was $835, she said “that, to me, sounds like a lot.”

“My cost is going to be well under half of that,” she said, adding that she thought it was “quite an overestimate for Geneva.”

Kaneland senior Rachel Mathys said she is one who will spend a lot on a dress – around $600. But she said she will cut back in other areas.

She said she had pulled a lot of dresses, and her mom pulled one as a joke and “thought it would make me look like a cupcake.”

She said she knows that “some girls spend major money,” but she feels that all of the dresses look special and “you would have to work for Vogue to be able to distinguish them.”

Roach said there isn’t any issue for those who spend more or less at prom. For those who spend more, she said the thought is “good for them. I wouldn’t complain.” And for those who spend less, “if anything, they’re praised because they saved their money.”

In the end, every East and St. Charles North boys player not named Keith Hedges, Mitch Riggs, Connor Anderson or Colin Jones lined the fence – standing near different segments, of course.

“We all hang out during the summer. We’re buddies,” Saints senior George Spoerl said. “But it’s like, during the season, it gets tight.”

That reality resonated through the final point of North’s 4-3 Upstate Eight Conference River Division dual victory, a result secured only when Hedges and Riggs earned a 6-2, 6-7(4), 7-6(5) win at No. 2 doubles for the North Stars.

“It’s one of those things that you talk about winning ugly and you talk about making sure you finish matches, and I thought they did a great job today of finishing the tiebreak,” North coach Sean Masoncup said. “They didn’t own the momentum, but they kept fighting and trying to get after it, and you win those.”

North (2-0 UEC River) claimed victories in three of the four doubles matches against the Saints (1-1). Grant Spellman and Aaron Amburgey’s 6-2, 6-2 win against Spoerl and Alex Winters in the No. 1 slot set the tone.

While the North Stars’ pair lamented it wasn’t always at its best, strong net play provided a constant and helped Spellman and Amburgey prevail.

“I’d say neither of us have particularly amazing strength or anything like that,” Amburgey said. “I think we both have great hands. If we can get to the net as soon as possible, that’s good.”

Urgency doubled as a theme for Saints senior No. 1 singles standout Jasper Koenen, a 6-1, 6-1 victor against North sophomore Matt Ernst.

Before departing – eventually to return – Koenen enjoyed what many find therapeutic: music. East’s girls soccer team hosted South Elgin at adjacent Norris Stadium, and the pregame warmups provided an indadvertent soundtrack for early tennis action.

“I don’t know, I kind of enjoy music. It makes it a little more relaxing,” Koenen said. “If it’s like, dead quiet sometimes, it can be a little nerve-racking. Not really nerve-racking, but if it’s silent, you don’t want to do anything wrong.”

PA system late in Ernst’s first encounter with the Michigan State-bound Koenen.

“Before [Ernst] went on, we talked, and I said, ‘You know, you’re playing a kid that’s got a Division I scholarship, who finished fourth in the state of Illinois [in 2013]. This is fun.

You get to see what you’re like,’ ” Masoncup said.

North sophomore Matt Kramer responded to a challenge of his own, defeating East senior Matt McCarthy in No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2.

Both athletes played doubles last season, but Kramer didn’t change his game.

“Just a lot of topspin, just keep it deep and just try and hit more shots in than the other guy, pretty much,” he said.

The senior-laden North Stars embraced Thursday’s closeness. When East’s No. 4 doubles tandem of Chris Horn and Stefan Cvarkovic won, 6-4, 7-6(5), the only result still

outstanding was at No. 2 doubles.

“Obviously, we would like to win, but it’s a pressure-cooked match, and they were really good matches,” Saints coach Rob Livermore said. “Both teams played well and I’m real proud of how those guys battled back.”

Masoncup delivered a pep talk before the match, stressing the importance of getting even after East won last season’s dual.

Amburgey, a transfer from suburban Louisville, Ky., at last experienced his first crosstown showdown as a participant. He got a taste as a fan during football and basketball season.

“I mean, we could just tell that everybody had a lot of energy and everybody was getting really pumped up,” Amburgey said.

Knights sputter early in defeat to Yorkville

Geneva handed 1st loss AURORA – After the Geneva baseball team rallied in the top of the seventh to tie Waubonsie Valley at 5 Thursday afternoon, the Warriors responded with a comeback of their own in their half of the inning to win, 6-5.

A bases-loaded single by Waubonsie’s Ryan Jones scored Ben Vietri with the winning run in the Upstate Eight Conference crossover game for Geneva’s first loss of the season.

The Vikings (8-1, 4-1 UEC River) started the seventh inning trailing, 5-2. Leadoff man Jason Croci opened the inning with his third single of the day off Waubonsie reliever Nick Drago. A walk to Garrett Davis and a Nick Derr single loaded the bases.

A groundout by Jack Wassel allowed Croci to score.

Geneva catcher Nate Montgomery followed with a single that scored Davis and Derr.

“I was sitting on the fastball, I took a couple of off-speed pitches at the be-

to make the plays, which unfortunately we didn’t,” Hahn said.

“Ryan Jones, he’s been struggling, so he needed that,” Warriors coach Dan Fezzuoglio said. “It was good for him, a junior, to come into a big situation. That’s something he can build on.”

Vietri, who went 3 for 4 with three singles, provided the spark for Waubonsie’s offense.

He singled in the first run of the game in the third inning and later scored to give his team a 3-0 advantage. In the fifth, he singled in the team’s fourth run and scored the fifth as the Warriors extended their lead to 5-2.

Montgomery got one of the runs back in the fourth with a double, Geneva’s only extra base hit of the day, in the leftfield gap to score Derr.

The Vikings scored their second run when Waubonsie starting pitcher Jack Eddy walked Ben Chally with the bases loaded in the fifth, forcing in Brandon Evert.

O’Loughlin took the loss for Geneva while Drago got the win.

MAPLE PARK – A sluggish early performance on offense and defense translated into a slow start for the Kaneland softball team in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East conference race.

The Knights’ conference opener quickly turned sour and Kaneland couldn’t fully recover Thursday in a 5-2 loss to Yorkville.

Yorkville scored all of its runs in the first two innings while Kaneland didn’t manage a base runner against Y o r k v i l l e Meg Cohrs right-hander Rachael Owens until the bottom of the fourth.

“She was a good pitcher but we definitely should have hit better than we did,” Kaneland infielder Meg Cohrs said.

“We haven’t been hitting our best. It’s been taking us once through the lineup to start hitting, and we’ve got to work on that because if we want to beat teams, we’ve got to jump out early. But we’ll get it.”

Cohrs shifted from shortstop to third base – where she made a crowd-pleasing, diving catch in the fourth inning – replacing injured standout Paige Kuefler. Kuefler, Kaneland’s cleanup hitter, took a line drive off her wrist in the top of the first. She stayed in the game to finish the inning but was removed to begin the second.

The Knights hope for the best for one of their top, allaround players.

“It started swelling up a little bit on her,” Kaneland coach Brian Willis said. “It was a precautionary measure. We’re not going to leave her out there. She’ll go and get it X-rayed tonight, and we’ll see if there’s any damage to it.”

– but the Foxes (8-4, 1-1 NI Big 12 East) produced enough early.

“Our loss to Morris [Wednesday] night, we did not hit the ball at all,” Foxes coach Kathi Dockstader said.

“That was one of the things we talked about, we had to come and jump on them right away, score runs and play good defense.”

Yorkville managed three hits and a walk in scoring three runs in the top of the first.

Morrow would have escaped the second without more damage but Yorkville catcher Madeline Avery managed a bloop,-two out, tworun single over the head of Kaneland second baseman Morgan Weber for the Foxes’ final two runs.

Willis lamented some of Yorkville’s well-placed hits.

“It all balances out in the end, but you’ve got to play through that and you’ve got to make the plays when they’re presented to you,” Willis said.

Weber had Kaneland’s first hit of the day in the fourth, a double to deep center field before scoring on a softly lined double that hit the right-field chalkline by fellow freshman Rachel Goress.

The Knights (6-6, 0-1) weren’t as fortunate on a close play in right field as they sought to tighten the game in the bottom of the sixth.

With her team trailing, 5-1, Cohrs sliced a line drive that likely would have scored two runs but landed just foul. Moments later, she struck out to end the inning.

“I was hoping it was going to stay fair,” Cohrs said. “I saw it curving, I saw it curving, and all I could think was ‘Please, please.’ But it happens to the best of us.”

Kaneland’s final run came in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI triple from No. 8 hitter Morgan Sikon.

After Eric O’Loughlin, who started the seventh in relief of starting pitcher Max Novak, walked Tad Wegner, the Vikings issued an intentional pass to Drago to face Jones. Instead of hitting into an inning-ending double play as Geneva hoped, the junior got the game-winning hit.

Bidding for their sixth straight league title, the Cadets prevailed without Kevin Hoss, the usual half of their No. 1 doubles tandem, who was away on a school band trip.

John King (No.1 singles) and the second doubles pairing of Luke Hoss and Dave Demoll were among the winners for Marmion (4-0, 2-0 SCC).

“We lost some focus and lost some intensity there in a lot of second sets, so you saw a roller coaster within the matches,” Cadets coach John Tsang said. “But it was a very competitive day.”

Now, for the potentially good news.

Emery isn’t Angelo. Still in just his third offseason, Emery has made great strides in cleaning up the wasteland of bad Angelo picks. Sure, pro free agency, not the draft, has been his greatest source of success.

But if he can start to replicate the young talent infusion on defense that the offense has quickly received, Emery’s Bears will be on the right track.

What’s more, a quick study of the recent history of selecting 14th overall reveals some of the NFL’s elite players currently. Go back further and find gold jacket recipients.

Perhaps the Bears’ greatest focus in three weeks will be strengthening the last line of defense.

The NFL’s best safety, Seattle’s Earl Thomas, was selected 14th overall four years ago. Thomas has been one of the driving forces behind the NFL’s best, most forward-thinking defense.

The Bears will undoubtedly be searching for Charles Tillman’s long-term successor. Seven years ago, the Jets struck gold with perhaps the best cover corner of this generation, Darrelle Revis.

Gang Green coaxed three AllPro campaigns, including a defensive player of the year performance in 2009, out of Revis.

Then, last offseason, the Jets received the 13th overall pick in 2013 from Tampa Bay in exchange for Revis, and turned that pick into rookie of the year Sheldon Richardson.

Robert Quinn was taken 14th overall by the Rams in 2011’s loaded first round. Last April, the Panthers found what looks like a cornerstone defensive piece in Star Lotulelei. Carolina’s Thomas Davis, one of the NFL’s gutsiest players, and Super Bowl champion Malcolm Jenkins (originally drafted by New Orleans) were also selected 14th overall during the past decade.

In fact, Angelo’s Bears notwithstanding, the bust factor at No. 14 has been extremely low dating back 15 years.

There are more whiffs even further back, but also Hall of Famers Jim Kelly in 1983 and Dave Robinson in 1963.

Only three more weeks until Emery tries to reverse the Bears’ fortunes at No. 14.

It’s a loaded draft, and history suggests one of the NFL’s next future stars could be available.

Next month marks the 79th draft in NFL history, and few have featured a deeper, more talented pool of prospects than in 2014.

One of the NFL’s charter franchises, the Bears have been a part of every one. They hold the 14th pick this year, and if general manager Phil Emery stays put, it’ll be the sixth time in franchise history the Bears make a selection at No. 14. In his third draft, it will be Emery’s highest selection.

With the exception of Tommie Harris (14th pick in 2004), who was among the NFL’s most dominant defenders early in his career before injuries derailed him, the Bears have failed to capitalize at No. 14.

Older fans might remember Dick Evey and Rufus

Mayes, selected 14th overall in 1964 and 1969, respectively.

Then again they might not.

Evey played six seasons at defensive tackle for the Bears; Mayes would play just one season for the Bears before being a mainstay at left tackle in Cincinnati for the next nine years.

Fast forward to 2003 and the Bears’ next crack at No. 14, defensive end Michael Haynes out of Penn State.

He’d make only four starts in three seasons in Chicago – not exactly first half of the first round production.

Former general manager Jerry Angelo would nab offensive lineman Chris Williams in the same slot six years later.

NOTEWORTHY Dogs’ days, indeed Host teams naturally cast bigger shadows at invitationals given the abundance of lower-level athletes and volunteers wearing school garb.

Batavia did that notion one better during Saturday’s Les Hodge Invitational when the 800 meters rolled around.

The Bulldogs claimed six of the top seven spots in the race, including champion Ryan Wieties (2:02.36), runner-up Chris Orlow (2:05.43) and third-place finisher Mitch Zabka (2:06.97).

Fourth-place Joe Potocki of St. Charles North briefly parted the sea of crimson and gold.

Orlow, Wieties and Zabka are no strangers to leading the pack, having helped steer the boys cross country team to the program’s first

state berth in the fall.

“We did the same type of thing. We built off each other,” Wieties said. “We’ve kind of got a three-headed monster going for us, but that’s what we do. And when we sense the other one’s struggling and they’re in trouble, the other guy is always there to help him out.”

Ege hurdles the Hodge field Elsewhere at the Hodge meet, Burlington Central junior Lucas Ege endured the elements to roll to a big day.

Ege captured individual titles in the 110 hurdles (14.90) and 300 hurdles (40.82) while joining the winning 4x400 relay (3:34.79).

“It was a very windy day, so he wasn’t able to put

up the big times we were hoping for and knowing he could do, but he still dominated the field, and that was good to see,” Rockets coach Mike Schmidt said.

More favorable weather and technology figure to boost Ege as the season progresses. BC hurdles coach Don Spencer – the former St. Charles North boys coach who joined the program to be closer to his daughter, Liz – has scrutinized video and is working to incorporate a tweak in Ege’s form.

Spencer sees something that would enhance Ege’s explosiveness after he lands.

“Which is scary to think about, that he can be significantly faster,” Schmidt said.

Senior Casey Matthews, in only his second year of track after using the sport to bolster his football shape,

also is trending upward.

His time of 10.6 set a new school and meet record in the 100 meters.

Keep pushing No foul occurred Saturday when Batavia’s Jenny Muehlbauer got tangled with another runner during the 800 at the Metea Valley Invitational and both tumbled to the ground.

No sulking did, either.

Muehlbauer recovered to help the Bulldogs’ 4x400 relay place third in 4:16.10 later in the day.

“She came back and ran the second leg of the 4x4 and ran a 61[-second] flat split, so she’s really coming on strong,” Batavia coach Justin Allison said.

Batavia High School students experience ‘Mad City Money’ KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – More than 120 students from Batavia High School learned the complications of household budgets during a recent “Mad City Money” program facilitated by Great Lakes Credit Union.

The program helps young adults learn what it is like to try to budget and manage a real life salary and real life situations.

Students were given an occupation, along with a salary, family, student-loan debt, credit-card debt and cost of medical insurance, to create a monthly budget as they visited various merchants and made decisions based on the management of their income.

“When young adults are provided with the hands on tools and

learn about resources available to them, they will be able to have and retain a positive relationship with money that will provide a healthy financial balance as they become adults,” said Vicki Schultz, the organizer of the program, in a news release.

Students had to make decisions, such as buying a house or renting an apartment; choosing affordable day care; whether or not they could afford to go out to a restaurant for dinner; and they experienced a financial windfall and financial setback.

Companies join forces for production Scion’s FR-S and Subaru’s BRZ are twin his and her vehicles.

The manufacturers differ but the vehicles are, right down to five twin-spoke 17-inch aluminum wheels and leather seat trim, the same. Same powerplants, mechanicals and design off a shared production line.

As essentially the same sports car, the FR-S and BRZ have the rear-wheel-drive relatively inexpensive four-cylinder sport coupe market to themselves. The closest competition comes from hatchbacks and front-wheel-drive coupes.

Yes, there are minor differences between the FR-S and BRZ. On the exterior, twin tailpipes are round on the BRZ and half-moons on the FR-S. Spoilers have ridges on the BRZ and not on the FR-S. If the LED taillights are the same, differences in front are grille, fog lamp and headlamp placements. Crisp bulging fenders flanking a slightly rounded hood, though, are identical.

Sounds emanating from the manifold system were more throaty in the FR-S than the BRZ. That implies some tweaking was done on behalf of the FR-S. Both vehicles arrived for test driving and were parked, when not in use, side by side for a week. The FR-S was copper (hot lava according to Scion) and the BRZ was dark blue (gray metallic, according to Subaru). The colors made them easier to keep apart as dusk and darkness descended daily.

Both vehicles are assembled side by side at Subaru’s Gunma plant in Ota-city, Japan, so it is no surprise that they share looks and mechanicals including the powerplant.

Both the tested rear-wheel-drive compact sport coupes came with a sixspeed manual transmission mated to a 200-horsepower, 2-liter, naturally aspirated, double overhead cam, boxer four-cylinder engine. An automatic is a $1,100 option on either the FR-S or BRZ. Boxer engines (flat opposing pistons) are nothing new to Subaru but they are to Scion. The partnership between Subaru and Toyota (Scion’s corporate owner) stipulated a boxer engine for this vehicle.

RWD is unusual for Subaru, as all-wheeldrive has been the norm for all company products since 1997. RWD is nothing new to Toyota (MR2, for example).

Prices start at $25,455 (including delivery) for an FR-S and at $26,390 for a BRZ.

For the moment, Scion’s FR-S and the Subaru BRZ have the $25,000 to $26,000 rear-wheel-drive, light sports car market to itself.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper The FS-R comes in one trim level from the manufacturer, as Scion dealers are responsible for accessories. That explains the more throaty exhaust system which was a $1,100 extra on the FS-R. The BRZ has two trim levels, Premium or base and Limited. The tested BRZ was a Limited model costing $27,595. It had keyless pushbutton ignition and higher quality leather for seat surfaces. The FR-S came with a key for the ignition and standard leather. In both vehicles, though, the leather was black with red stitching.

On a test track, the FR-S has raced from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 6.5 seconds with the stick shift. The untested BRZ should perform the same. An automatic transmission will add a second to that time. These cars are not the larger and quicker V6 Ford Mustangs or Cameros.

Fuel usage ranges from 25 to 30 miles

per gallon of unleaded premium fuel.

During the test week, both sportsters averaged, roughly, 26.8 mpg in combined city and highway driving.

Amenities include an eight-speaker AM-FM-satellite radio, compact disc sound system with HD radio, USB and Bluetooth connectivity and an auxiliary port as standard. Other features are power exterior mirrors, windows and door locks, cruise control, intermittent wipers, leather-wrapped steering wheel, engine immobilizer, remote keyless entry, 12and 120-volt outlets, and two minispares.

The rear seat can be flattened to expand storage space.

The center cupholder can be removed to create more elbow room for the driver’s shifting needs. It can remain in place for use in less aggressive driving situations.

Instrumentation emphasizes a large analog tachometer and digital speedometer.

A year ago, an FR-S (came to market in 2013) was tested at a race track near Las Vegas, Nev. Since the track was not an oval, but a series of turns, downshifting at high

speeds and economical use of brakes (11.6-inch front, 11.5-inch rear, ventilated) to guide the 17-inch performance tires through the tight turns was a necessity.

Balance, front to rear and side to side, was superb. In fact, it was incredible. Riding lower to the ground than the 5-inch norm, the low center of gravity helped FR-S stick to the race track. A tuned strut suspension system kept the driver upright. This system relies on MacPherson struts in front and double wishbones in the rear.

What is neat about the vehicle is that either or both traction and stability controls can be turned off for a more wicked spin around corners. They are not completely off as a Torsen limited-slip differential sends torque to wheels that need it to keep the car from spinning out of control.

The FR-S lettering stands for front engine, rear-wheel-drive sport. BRZ is short for boxer rear-drive zenith.

Warranties on both vehicles are three years or 36,000 miles with 24-hour roadside assistance and five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain.

Disneynature’s “Bears” is a nature documentary with a twist.

‘Bears’: Survival is the bare necessity

By SANDIE ANGULO CHEN Special to The Washington Post For the past several years, Disneynature has marked Earth Day by releasing a documentary celebrating Mother Nature.

“Bears” is the studio’s latest nature doc with a twist. It’s more reality show than peer-reviewed research, and like any reality show, the creators have endowed their subjects with moxie, personality and drama.

Wildlife documentary pros Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey follow their well-established format (“Chimpanzee,” “African Cats”) of anthropomorphizing animals with human names, motivations and emotions, while still providing educational information and visuals so stunning, you’ll wonder how they were shot.

“Bears” opens with narrator John C. Reilly introducing a mama bear, named Sky, and her two newborn cubs, Scout and Amber.

Soon after, Reilly sets up the film’s central source of tension. Odds are only one of the two cubs will reach its first birthday. With that grim statistic, the film follows Sky and her cubs as they

journey from the cozy comfort of their den on a perilous trek through the Alaskan peninsula in search of Sky’s primary sustenance, spawning salmon.

But what’s a reality show without drama? Whenever Sky and her twin cubs survive one threat – an avalanche, angry male bears, a hungry grey wolf – another danger threatens to make good on the bleak ursine infant-mortality statistics.

Reilly lightens these sequences by cheerfully narrating the cubs’ antics without the manic comedy stylings that Tim Allen displayed in “Chimpanzee.”

There’s plenty of imagined dialogue between the cubs and their mama, but Reilly’s charming enough to pull off the balance between educational tidbits and talking-animal shtick. The humor, it turns out, is necessary considering the number of tense moments.

Not surprising, then, that the often-jokey narration of “Bears” doesn’t focus on every aspect of a brown bear’s life cycle, as “March of the Penguins” or “Winged Migration” did for their avian subjects. For that, you’ll want to take advantage of the film’s extensive interactive guides and activity sheets online.

Parents, take note: The movie is rated G, but there could be tears, protests and loud questions from sensitive young animal lovers – particularly during one nearly unendurable scene, when a male bear pokes through fallen logs in an attempt to eat one of the cubs.

Don’t be surprised if older kids, on the other hand, want to Google “filial cannibalism” the moment the credits roll.

As with Fothergill’s previous nature documentaries, “Bears” is a story of triumph and family. The spectacular cinematography (which took a year to capture, a process highlighted during the credits), the sometimes silly and sentimental narration, and the alternately cutesy and menacing score are all used to showcase the dramatic lengths the wildlife kingdom’s most famously protective mother will go to provide for her cubs.

All of that makes “Bears” a great pick not just for Earth Day, but for Mother’s Day, too.

• “Bears” received three out of four stars. The film is rated G and contains some tense and potentially scary sequences and references to animal cannibalism. It runs 78 minutes.

Time-out must be enforced to be effective Dear Doctor K: You’ve mentioned time-outs as an appropriate way to discipline young children. But they don’t work for my son, at least the way I’m doing them. What can I do differently?

Dear Reader: When children are young, discipline means teaching them self-control and the difference between acceptable and unacceptable behaviors. One way to do this is with a time-out.

The technique doesn’t work well for kids younger than 18 months. After that age, however, your child can increasingly understand what you are saying.

Explaining to the child calmly what he did wrong adds to the effectiveness of the time-out.

A time-out involves taking a “break” away from a difficult situation and spending time in a less appealing place. A timeout is a chance for your son to cool down and think about his behavior.

The following tips may help make your son’s time-outs more effective: • Know when to use one. Timeouts are most useful for aggressive, harmful or disruptive behaviors, such as hitting, kicking, biting or throwing things – all behaviors that cannot be ignored.

That’s because a time-out teaches

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff peaceful problem solving. Timeouts are usually less effective for behaviors that can be ignored, such as temper tantrums or whining.

• Make sure you mean it when you say it. A time-out rarely works if you threaten to use it without following through. Once you’ve decided to give one, no amount of apologizing, tears or negotiation should change that decision.

• Make sure a time-out is actually happening. A time-out must be enforced so that it actually happens. If your child refuses to stay in time-out, place him in the time-out chair and hold him gently but firmly by the shoulders from behind for the duration of time-out. There should be no discussion or negotiation during this time. Don’t sit in the time-out chair yourself and hold the child on your lap. That’s fine to do as positive reinforcement when the child is behaving well.

But not when he’s been misbehaving and needs some negative feedback.

• Make sure the place is right.

Remember that time-out works because it removes your child from his favorite activities and takes him away from your attention. Make sure the time-out chair is in a boring place, where your son cannot see the television or other people.

Sometimes a time-out will be necessary when you and your child are not in your home.

Wherever you are, perhaps in a shopping mall, be sure that the location you choose for the time-out will be really boring for your child. An important part of making a time-out effective is making it boring, as kids hate to be bored, even more than we do.

• Make sure time-out doesn’t last too long. Do not keep your child in time-out for more than one minute for each year of age (for example, about three minutes for a 3-year-old).

• Finally, praise good behavior. Make sure your child knows that he will get more attention from you for positive behaviors than for negative behaviors.
