editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Geneva police are warning residents and business owners of a telephone scam in which a caller claiming to be a “ComEd representative” threatens to disconnect power service unless late payments were made over the phone.

Several Geneva businesses

reported receiving these phone calls this week, according to a news release. Police emphasize these calls are a scam, and people should not make a payment or provide financial information to the caller.

Commonwealth Edison is not Geneva’s electric utility provider. The city owns and operates its own electric utility and would not call or demand payment over the phone. Resi-

dents and business owners can check the status of their utility bill account on the city’s website at www.geneva.il.us.

Anyone with doubts about the validity of a call regarding their bill, should not hesitate to call the city’s finance division at 630-232-0854 or visit the office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

safest practice is to not provide financial or personal information over the phone, especially if the telephone call is unsolicited. Those who are unsure about whether the call is legitimate should advise the caller they will need to contact them later, hang up and then check their account status.

Celebration of trees event in St. Charles

Fabyans’ original bedroom set makes it home

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA TOWNSHIP – Visitors to the historic Fabyan Villa Museum in the Fabyan Forest Preserve in Geneva Township often ask, “Where is all their furniture?”

Most of it was sold at an estate sale after George and Nelle Fabyan died in 1936 and 1939, said Hannah Walters, director of the museum and Japanese Garden.

But now a four-piece bedroom set that once belonged to the Fabyans will be on display during tours beginning May 3, when the museum opens for the 2015 season at 1511 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva, Walters said.

The Fabyans lived there from 1905 to 1939.

The Victorian-style bedroom set includes two side tables topped with white marble, one elaborately carved bed and marble-topped mirrored dresser, most likely made in the late 19th century, Walters said.

“This is one of the rare pieces that is a full set,” Wal-

ters said. “There is an original set in Nelle’s bedroom, and we have pieces from various buildings on the estate. ... But it’s rare to get a full set of furniture. It’s amazing. It’s a big deal.”

The bedroom set was brought 700 miles from North Carolina, donated by owners Mary Lou and Richard Boehme. The Friends of Fabyan Foundation spent about $2,500 to move the furniture, Walters said.

The furniture donation came about when Mary Lou Boehme sent Walters an email in October.

Mary Lu Boehme said her husband’s uncle, Anton Brazonis, who worked for Colson’s department store in St. Charles, received the bedroom set as a wedding gift from the store owner, Lloyd Colson.

The gift was made either in the late 1940s or early 1950s, she said.

“We are thinking [Colson] bought the furniture at the estate sale,” Mary Lu Boehme said.

she added. “We would go visit him, and I always admired that set. He said, ‘After I die, it’s yours.’ Sure enough, he died, and we got it. It was perfect in our house.”

But now that the Boehmes are downsizing, the set will no longer fit, she said, so the couple reached out to donate it to the Fabyan museum.

Mary Lu Boehme said her husband grew up in St. Charles, graduating from St. Charles High School in 1967.

Fabyan Villa was transformed from a farmhouse to a modern home by architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1907.

The Kane County Forest Preserve District bought 235 acres of the Fabyans’ estate and created the preserve after their deaths.

The home started operating as a house museum in 1995, when Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley started managing the museum under contract with the Kane County Forest Pre-

serve.

Walters said an inside drawer is stamped George Croome & Company Upholstery, in Boston, where George Fabyan originally was from.

From the October 1939 probate listing, the bedroom set matches the description of a set on the first floor of a building owned by the Fabyans known as the lodge, Walters said.

That house now is a privately owned residence.

Kaneland considering higher middle school fees SUGAR GROVE – Textbook fees for Kaneland Harter Middle School students could be increased for the 2015-16 school year.

The Kaneland School District 302 Board this week discussed a recommendation that the middle school textbook fees rise to $150. The cost for the 2014-15 school year was $130.

Associate Superintendent Julie-Ann Fuchs noted it was a recommendation from Kaneland’s finance advisory committee. For the current school year, the textbook fees for elementary and middle school students were identical.

Fuchs and interim Superintendent Renee Goier said that committee members made the suggestion near the end of a meeting, and Goier said some members indicated “they felt rushed.”

Board members were not

asked to take action on the issue. One member, Pedro Rivas, said he would “throw a twist into this,” saying he never had seen a discount for those with multiple children in district schools.

kids and they also play sports … there has to be some kind of consideration to cut a family some slack,” Rivas said.

Teresa Witt, the board’s vice president, said if the fees represent what the actual cost is, there should not be a dis-

count if “the cost is the cost.”

But Fuchs said “the costs are not the costs.” Fuchs said the district covers some of the costs.

Other fees would remain unchanged. The textbook fee for high school students is $175.

WELLNESS FOR ALL AGES Fit parents serve as role models for children

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Workouts have become a family affair this year for Debbie Bauer of St. Charles.

Bauer used to exercise by herself at home using fitness videos she found on YouTube.

That was before she discovered a Fit4Mom class in December called Stroller Strides, a one-hour interval training course held four mornings a week at The Quad St. Charles, 3800 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The class format allows participants to bring their children in strollers and interact with them while they break a sweat. Bauer usually brings her two children, Liam, 4, and Aiden, 2.

“The first class was a lot of fun, and I’ve been going ever since,” Bauer said.

Bauer is one of many residents in the area who find a workout is better when it’s done with loved ones. Along with St. Charles, there are a variety of other offerings in the Tri-Cities for wellness-minded families.

The Geneva Park District offers up to 80 classes each season and has programming for toddlers through seniors, said Traci Wicks, the district’s director of marketing and public relations.

The district typically sees mother-daughter pairings in classes, such as hoop dancing, indoor cycling, Zumba and yoga, Wicks said.

For unstructured activity, Wicks said families ride bikes or jog on district trails, and in the summer months head to Sunset Pool, at 710 Western

RiverWest Family Fitness, at 108 First St., Batavia, has offered a Friday Night Family Night since it opened in April 2003, said its owner, Chris Hylton.

The family night is more popular during the colder months and allows members to bring their children to exercise if they are ages 8 and older, Hylton said.

Some of the children who used to come to family night currently have their own memberships, and the same has happened with some who used to get baby-sat in the fitness center’s playroom, Hylton said. The playroom is open every morning except for Sunday and later in the afternoons on weekdays.

Hylton said he most often

sees couples or parents working out together. Parents set the example for their children to lead a healthy lifestyle, Hylton said.

“They realize it should be part of their life,” Hylton said of children and fitness.

“There’s definitely a learned

behavior going on.”

Although the Fit4Mom

brand offers different classes nationwide, Stroller Strides has proven the most popular, and it’s the only one that involves children, Barto said.

Children are entertained during the class by their mothers, who sing songs during the classes and also get a book read to them by the instructor.

Coming to the class has allowed Bauer and her boys to make friends with other fitness-minded moms who bring their children. Fit4Mom also arranges play groups and social outings for participants, Barto said.

Bauer said she wants Liam and Aiden to grow up eating right and knowing how to take care of themselves. Stroller Strides is a good start to that, she said.

“I hope that I’m helping to instill healthy habits in them at a young age,” Bauer said.

Castro said she still is waiting to learn who Kramer hired as his new finance director, and Onzick said he hopes to work with that person to better understand the sheriff’s budget.

Onzick has provided customized budget reports to County Board committees since March as a way to monitor the sheriff’s finances.

Since Onzick’s presentation last week, the sheriff’s

office has gone from an overage of about $143,000 to nearly $183,000. There might be legitimate reasons for this, such as timing of expenses and payments received, Onzick said.

But, he said, “This is all I have.”

Onzick last heard from the sheriff last week, when Kramer sent a response to the customized budget report, he said. Onzick said the sheriff claimed 12 of the line items were grossly overstated.

An analysis of those line

items shows otherwise, Onzick said. Using multiple slides, he explained to the committee that the current budget is reasonable compared to last year’s budget, the five-year average and the five-year trend.

Kramer last attended a Judicial and Public Safety Committee meeting in February, when he defended his decision regarding the federal inmate program. At that time, he described the jail as “grossly understaffed” and said he was willing to meet the board halfway.

GENEVA – Sheriff Donald Kramer’s continued absence at public meetings continued to frustrate Kane County Board members Thursday as they sought answers only he could provide.

“We’re all asking the same questions, but he’s not here to respond,” Theresa Barreiro, D-Aurora, said to the Judicial and Public Safety Committee, which the sheriff’s office reports to.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office has been under scrutiny since January, when board members learned Kramer reduced the number of federal inmates at the jail.

The program with the U.S. Marshal’s Service was expected to generate more than $2 million in revenue.

One federal detainee was housed in March and created about $2,000 in revenue, according to a report prepared by the director of corrections.

The report indicated the

average jail population for that month was 561 detainees.

Because the jail has fewer prisoners, committee members continued to question the overtime in adult corrections. So far this year, overtime totals $133,097 compared to $120,715 and $105,748 at this time in 2014 and 2013, respectively, Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick said.

When asked after the meeting about what might be contributing to the overtime, County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said, “Why are you asking me?”

He said because Kramer authorized the sheriff’s budget, the board is entitled to have monthly progress reports from him. The board, Lauzen said, “is being badly disrespected.”

Committee Chairman Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, noted her colleagues’ frustration to two members of Kramer’s leadership team who were in attendance.

NORTH AURORA – Thanks to the North Aurora Fire Department, a 1984 Pierce Pumper fire truck, which the childhood cancer awareness group Bike Bald uses as an educational and community vehicle, is purring once again.

North Aurora Fire Captain Michael Klemencic, along with North Aurora Fire Lt. Alex Pepper and North Aurora firefighter Harold Webster, the department’s mechanic, donated their time and money to address some maintenance issues on the truck.

Those issues included fixing a leak in the truck’s headliner, giving it an oil change and putting in a new fuel filter.

“I love these guys,” Bike Bald founder Debbie Mossburg said after picking up the truck Thursday. “We got the truck last May and hadn’t had the time to go through it.”

Bike Bald provides cycling rides and events for the general public while supporting childhood cancer awareness.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva School District 304’s first year of all-day kindergarten gives teachers “the gift of time,” said Andrew Barrett, the district’s director of learning and teaching.

Barrett recently gave the school board an informal progress report on teachers’ feedback.

All but five kindergarten students are in the full-day program, he said.

“It is just the gift of time that made a crucial difference for them to accomplish so much more for students,” Barrett said. “And now they can do some of these developmentally appropriate things for our little ones.”

Barrett said teachers can have children do science experiments and work with with hands-on materials, enabling them to do quality academic work with students.

“It’s important to acknowledge how kids are working together in an authentic learning experience,” Barrett said. “They are able to include more social and developmental learning, things that were being crowded out of a half-day program. ... It takes time to set kids up in groups. In that short kindergarten day, it was hard to do.”

Barrett said officials were trying to track students’ progress both formally and informally.

“All of us love hearing this,” board member Mary Stith said. “I’m excited to hear next year from our firstgrade teachers.”

Board President Mark Grosso said he has heard overwhelming positive comments from parents and grandparents about the fullday program.

The school board approved the all-day program for the 2014-15 school year.

State law is going to require it by 2016, officials said.

Fire causes $175,000 damage to St. Charles home

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A latenight fire Wednesday that caused $175,000 in damage to a St. Charles home remains under investigation, St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said Thursday.

There were no injuries to the home’s occupants or firefighters, according to a news release issued by the St. Charles Fire Department.

At 11:36 p.m. Wednesday, the fire department responded to a report of a house fire at 2901 Royal Fox Drive, St.

Charles, the release stated.

While en route, the release stated, firefighters learned that police had arrived on the scene and reported a fully involved fire in an attached garage.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at 11:39 p.m. and found a heavy fire in the garage moving into the house, according to the release. Firefighters extinguished the fire in 90 minutes.

According to the release, the fire was discovered when one of the male occupants entered the garage to do some work. He told his brother,

who called 911 and notified others in the house.

They were able to evacuate the house, which was not habitable after the fire, according to the release.

Although the fire is being investigated, the release stated it is not considered suspicious.

Schelstreet said investigators want to be certain of the facts surrounding any fire before they determine the cause of the incident.

In general, residents should be aware of the amount of flammable liquid they have in their garages and how it’s

stored, Schelstreet said.

Be aware of combustibles, including anything being kept in storage and decorations, Schelstreet said. Ashes from fireplaces or charcoal grills should be disposed of in metal garbage cans kept outside, never in plastic garbage cans, he said.

The St. Charles Fire Department was assisted by fire departments from Geneva, Batavia, West Chicago, Elburn and Fermilab. North Aurora and South Elgin fire departments provided coverage while St. Charles units were committed to the scene.

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Judicial decisions are rational To the Editor: Earlier this month, Gov. Rauner pointedly and unfairly attacked the integrity of the Illinois Supreme Court and Illinois’ entire justice system. He labeled the system “corrupt” and said he did not “trust the Supreme Court to be rational” in its decisions.

As lawyers, we know Gov. Rauner’s attack is without foundation. We read the opinions authored by the supreme and appellate courts.

We know they are decided without bias, based on the facts and evidence presented and the applicable law. We respect them as intelligent, well-reasoned decisions, even when we don’t agree with them.

We also know the hard work judges do every day on behalf of those who seek access to justice. We see the difficult cases they decide. We know Illinois’ judicial system is not corrupt and that judicial decisions are rational.

As lawyers, we can appreciate the governor’s interest in the justice system and the election of judges. It is a legitimate topic of debate. In fact, since the early 1980s, the Illinois State Bar Association has worked with political leaders on both sides of the aisle to promote merit selection and retention of judges and public financing of judicial elections.

That makes it all the more disappointing that the governor has launched an irresponsible attack without merit on the integrity of the entire judicial system. Instead, he should engage in constructive dialogue or propose legislation to work on these issues.

Poor Putin has some wealthy friends

By LEONID BERSHIDSKY Bloomberg News Russian President Vladimir Putin has an optics problem: Even as he asks people to be patient with the economic turmoil brought on in part by his response to Western sanctions, new income and property declarations are demonstrating that he and his top staffers aren’t sharing the pain.

During a four-hour callin session with ordinary Russians, Putin spoke about his ban on food imports from Western countries, imposed last year as a response to financial sanctions against state-owned companies: Yes, this has negative consequences in terms of a contribution to food inflation, that’s true. And indeed, here it will be necessary to put up with it for a while.

On paper, Putin isn’t a rich man: His official earnings amounted to 7.6 million

rubles ($151,600) last year, and his assets included a third of an acre of land, a modest, 828-square foot apartment and a garage, where he keeps two vintage Soviet cars and a cheap, Russian-made Niva off-roader.

That said, he’s doing much better than most Russians.

His income is almost 23 times the national average, and it more than doubled from 2013 to 2014 because of a big salary increase he gave himself in April – a raise that most Russians could only dream of at a time when unemployment is growing and companies are cutting costs.

A man who wields near-absolute power in a country as vast as Russia doesn’t need money or property – although if he ever retires, he probably will be able to turn part of his political capital into cash.

Much of his wealth potential comes from the opportunities he creates for friends and underlings. Even the official

declarations, which probably are woefully incomplete and do not include investments or bank balances, show that such opportunities are considerable.

Putin’s chief of staff, Sergei Ivanov, a career government official, declared an income of 16.2 million rubles in 2014. He owns a big house on five acres and a palatial, 2,768-square-foot apartment.

His wife drives a Porsche Cayenne. Nikolai Patrushev, secretary of Putin’s security council and a former domestic intelligence boss, declared a combined annual income with his wife of 40 million rubles and, among other real estate, a house in Moscow’s exclusive Serebryany Bor area, which anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny recently estimated was worth 1 billion rubles. Across the river from the palatial mansion sits an uneven row of ugly high-rise blocks. “The river is like a literal poverty line,”

Navalny wrote.

The list of Putin administration officials with expensive cars, boats and lots of real estate goes on and on.

Alexei Gromov, a deputy chief of staff whom Moscow editors fear for his stringent insistence on the Putin party line, owns a 10,344-square-foot house near Moscow, worth millions of dollars, although he has not worked a day in the private sector.

The presidential press secretary, Dmitri Peskov, whose artful denials of this or that are in the news every day, made as much as Gromov and owns a Mercedes G500.

Indeed, Russians’ reaction to politically induced economic problems has so far been lethargic, and Putin’s support has remained stable.

So it seems that the officials he made powerful and rich – in that order – need not worry about the people they’re asking to “put up with it for a while.”

Geneva tops North for 1st time

By CHRIS WALKER editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Geneva senior goalie Kevin Belter has worked his tail off, but he’s still never been able to celebrate after playing any St. Charles boys lacrosse team.

Now he can.

Belter was brilliant for the Vikings, making countless stops as the Vikings survived a furious late comeback from the North Stars to earn a 7-6 victory Thursday night at Burgess Field.

It was the first time the Vikings have ever beaten the North Stars.

“It was our defense and remaining focused out there between every possession,” Belter said. “We seemed to win every possession in the air, and were able to stay focused 100 percent of the time.

We got to them and forced them to make bad shots so I had easy saves.”

Geneva coach Derek Bahler knows Belter has finished on the downside of this rivalry throughout his career, so he was especially satisfied for his goalie to come up huge.

“He’s been here every year since those St. Charles schools split,” Bahler said.

“He’s worked through those losses and there he was turning away shots tonight, and it shows that his hard work in practice and how he worked in the postseason has paid off.”

St. Charles North (6-3) jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead, but the Vikings (4-0) answered with four straight goals, including two from Griffin Bellano, to regain control at half.

The Norris Stadium scoreboard listed the squad, comprised of players from both North and East, as STC LAX in Thursday’s match against the Metea Valley/Waubonsie Valley co-op – known as the Tribe.

St. Charles fans, even without a fierce animal or Nordic warrior for inspiration, had plenty to cheer about as their team won the DuPage Upstate Eight Conference contest, 14-2.

St. Charles (2-2, 1-1 DUEC) scored 12 unanswered goals in the first half to put the game away in the first home game of

year. The team has competed for several seasons, but is in its first spring as a District 303 school sport.

Eight different players scored. Emma Haley and Liz Maisch, both from East, led the scoring with three goals each.

“This was a really good way to get our home schedule started,” St. Charles coach Ronni Kluener said.

“We were moving the ball real well. We were there for the cuts and did a good job of getting open,” said St. Charles’ Claudia Richman, who scored two goals. “And on the transitions, we were able to pass and work the ball up.”

Tribe coach Morgan Weinstock noticed the same thing.

“St. Charles is a very well-developed team,” Wein-

“Katie Cottrell had four interceptions. She was there for everything. Liz Maisch – she killed it on the draw controls.

She got a lot of them and ran the ball.”

Said Maisch: “We have a very strong defense this year.

We’ve been working as being one unit by just talking and communicating.”

The Tribe (3-2, 2-1) finally broke the shutout 12 minutes into the second half on a score

Navigato decommits from Buffalo

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Geneva senior boys basketball standout Nate Navigato confirmed Thursday he has requested his release from the University of Buffalo after coach Bobby Hurley’s departure last week.

Navigato said he informed new Bulls coach Nate Oats of his decision Saturday, when Buffalo promoted Oats, a former assistant under Hurley, who left the school to become Arizona State’s new coach.

“Once [Hurley] left, I still thought I could maybe go to Buffalo, but I ended up having a change of heart and decided not to go there,” Navigato said.

“There’s no other way to put it other than that I did not feel right going there anymore,

and I certainly didn’t want to go there for four years and not feel happy.”

Navigato, a 6-foot-7 forward and Geneva’s all-time scoring leader with 1,757 career points, will re-enter the recruitment process after his release clears. He said he was told his wait might take up to 30 days.

In the interim, he said he cannot have contact with college coaches. Navigato’s initial leanings are to remain closer to home, but he is open to considering schools in all locations.

“I’ve got to see what comes my way with coaches and schools now,” Navigato said.

“It’s really starting over. Whoever calls now, we’ll see what the interest is and what they say and we’ll go from there.”

In September, Navigato, the two-time reigning Kane Coun-

ty Chronicle Boys Basketball Player of the Year, verbally committed to Buffalo, which had made a habit of dispatching coaches to the Vikings’ fall open gyms.

The inside-outside threat who sparked Geneva to a 30-5 finish as a senior spoke of feeling secure with Hurley, Duke’s famed former point guard. Last month, Navigato scrambled to watch the Bulls’ NCAA Tournament opener against West Virginia only hours before leading Geneva into a Class 4A state semifinal in Peoria.

Navigato weighed numerous other Division I offers before committing to Buffalo.

Long lauded for his work ethic, he said he has kept in shape by training at the Geneva Park District’s Persinger Recreation Center after school.

“Fast,” Taylor said. “Just get on base by any means. I’m a scrappy player.”

Presumably, Taylor won’t hesitate to deliver the same assessment at his next stop in the parent Arizona Diamondbacks’ organizational pipeline.

A prospect who absorbs his share of shoe puns was part of the Cougars’ first roster move of the season, announced almost concurrently with the start of Thursday’s 7-6, 13-inning loss to Clinton.

Gone are Taylor, to Advanced-A Visalia (California), and fellow outfielder Scott Kalamar, to extended spring training. In their stead come Josh Elander and Victor Reyes, acquired this month in a trade between the D’backs and Atlanta Braves in which the Braves received right-hander Trevor Cahill, one of 131 Cougars to reach the Major Leagues.

That’s just the beginning of the role reversal theme that swirled around Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Thursday, even extending to the stands.

Dozens of school buses filled with students arrived for the first Ozzie’s Reading Club matinee of the season. Appropriately, the “SpongeBob SquarePants” theme blared over the public address system in due time; Marty Herum, the Cougars’ first baseman and No. 3 hitter, was in the middle of his first at-bat.

In the top of the inning, Cougars right-hander Jeferson Mejia allowed the first of his three runs in four innings, working to overcome the same shakiness indigenous to his Midwest League debut Saturday.

Mejia, 20, signed with the Cubs for $850,000 in 2012, and was 2-4 with a 2.48 ERA over 40 innings in rookie ball last season. Ascending to the MWL this spring marks an appreciable jump, but D’backs brass like the 6-foot-7, 257-pound Mejia’s potential, even as he masters controlling his emotions in addition to his stuff.

“You’ve got to learn to grasp that, yeah,” first-year Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek said. “Again, he’s young. He’s got big upside. So we’ll take it nice and easy. [Pitching coach Doug Bochtler] is great for him.

He’s going to be really good with him, nurturing him along the way.”

After today’s series finale, the Cougars will board their own newly-customized Peoria Charter bus for a three-game series in Quad Cities that begins Saturday night.

After that, they’ll host the LumberKings for three games next week, then hit the road for six more. If nothing else, the early season scheduling quirk allows Grudzielanek, a Major League infielder for 15 seasons – including 2003 to 2004 with the Cubs – to get re-acclimated to the grind.

Fine by him.

“The Midwest has a place in my heart. Chicago, I loved it. I’m from Milwaukee. So it’s going to be really neat this year traveling around the Midwest and enjoying it,” Grudzielanek said. “Remember what minor league baseball is all about – The competitiveness.

“This is going to be a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to it.

It’s a notch on my belt to learn and understand and get a good feeling of this and try to organize a group of kids and put them in the right direction.”

Although this story took place in Cleveland, it was as much about the sport in general as it was about the sport’s future at an individual school.

It’s about wrestlers, the sport’s fight to remain viable in D-I, and the opportunities for future athletes.

The northern Illinois area is filled with young wrestlers who hope to one day be scholarship college athletes.

They have plenty of examples to follow, but, when the young wrestlers in the county grow up, how many programs will be left?

McHenry County’s three senior state champion wrestlers are headed to programs with Power 5 conference football programs.

Those schools, such as the Illinois program that Crystal Lake South senior Eric Barone is headed to, can afford to run up more than $400,000 in wrestling losses.

Oklahoma State, where Crystal Lake Central’s Andrew Marsden is headed, spent $700,000 more than it made last school year, while Wisconsin, where Cary-Grove’s Michael Cullen will wrestle, ran up more than $850,000 in wrestling losses.

When schools start paying Cost of Attendance stipends to athletes in the fall, those expenses only will increase, which means it’s inevitable more programs will be called out to be cut.

“Unless you’re a multiple -time state champ from a wres-

VIEWS Jon Styf tling powerhouse state, unless you have done stuff on the national level, you are having to contribute to your schooling,” said Crystal Lake-based ISI wrestling program director Jim Herff.

Each Division I school is allowed 9.9 full scholarships.

That means, of the almost 270,000 high school wrestlers out there, there are 722.7 full D-I scholarships.

Most of those scholarships, however, are divied up, with between 20 to 30 wrestlers getting partial scholarships a team, and many times 10 or more on each team receiving no athletic aid.

But that doesn’t mean wrestling is going away or that D-I programs will go away without a fight.

“The wrestling community is a tight community,” said Kemp, now a motivational speaker and ESPN commentator who was a three-time NCAA champ at Wisconsin and also coach of the 2008 Olympic team. “I believe the Division I tournament is the third-largest in profit for the NCAA next to football and basketball. So it’s a big deal.”

When programs are threatened, wrestlers bond together.

That’s what happened in March when the program at D-II Northern State in Ab-

erdeen, South Dakota, was suspended, only to later be reinstated. And that’s what happened at Cleveland State.

“People describe wrestling and the wrestling community as a cult,” Herff said. “There is not another sport that is as personal. There’s no other sport where you’re sweating and bleeding so close together, but there’s also such respect.

You just don’t forget those kind of bonds that form.”

The difference between schools with Power 5 football programs making millions, which can be spent on other sports, and smaller programs such as Cleveland State is funding.

Almost all of Cleveland State’s athletic department is funded through student fees.

At Eastern Michigan, the program is funded through the university. And, at Central Michigan, more than half of the program’s $250,000 in revenue comes from camps.

All of this doesn’t mean college wrestling is going away, it does mean what it looks like is changing as the D-II, III and NAIA levels are growing. In NAIA, athletic scholarships aren’t differentiated from academic and thus aren’t capped, meaning all the money comes from the school’s general scholarship fund.

In D-III, all athletes pay their own way.

“A lot of people think our sport is obscure,” Herff said.

“But it’s a growing sport. The numbers of youth wrestlers

(ages 6 to 14) has increased dramatically over the past four or five years. What that represents for us is opportunity. Opportunity to continue in the sport, the sport that we love and care about.

“There’s hundreds of Division III schools that have wrestling. Those levels are becoming more and more competitive as D-I numbers drop off.”

That trend isn’t likely to end soon.

Because, althought you hear about schools trying to drop their D-I wrestling programs, there isn’t a lot of news being made by schools trying to add them.

Ultimately, it comes down to money.

Wrestling doesn’t make any for schools. Those schools that can afford to lose on the sport can choose to continue, while programs such as Cleveland State’s will continue to fight for their financial lives.

It takes resilience to find success in wrestling.

Off the mat, these programs are having to show the same quality.

Wrestling fought off Olympic elimination, and college programs continue to fight off their own elimination.

But that fight, the one for the sport to continue at the D-I level, doesn’t seem to have an end in sight.

College wrestling continues to take hits because, financially, it cannot defend itself.

At least not with revenue.

The main reasons there are only 73 Division I wrestling programs remaining, down from 146 in 1977, is because the sport costs the universities, and student bodies, that support them.

Title IX requires schools to give equal opportunity to men’s and women’s athletes, and football and basketball teams are loaded with scholarship athletes in sports that, at many schools, are bringing in revenue.

In some cases, such as Big Ten schools, piles of it.

On Wednesday, however, wrestling scored a win.

A little more than two weeks after announcing it would cut its wrestling program, Cleveland State reversed its decision.

The public spoke, the school’s students spoke, and the university listened. The plan to cut wrestling and replace it with lacrosse was altered, with the university instead instituting a $1-a-credit-hour fee to keep the program afloat.

“I was shocked,” three-time world champion wrestler and Palatine resident Lee Kemp said about his reaction when he heard Cleveland State was defunding wrestling. “Coming from Cleveland, as a young wrestler growing up, that team was important to the wrestling community.”

For example, Joan Bucky, (as in BadArteberry ger) our shaggy Pekingese, just came back from his favorite groomer, Amy’s Wild Hairs in Maple Park.

He sports a sleeker look, is ready for warm weather and has thoughts of victory in his daily chase of the cats, George and Gracie. Dream on, doggie.

Bucky doesn’t completely understand why he has a red collar, red blanket and a whole bunch of red and white stuff around the house.

During the NCAA Final Four, things really got exciting and then the cheering ended abruptly.

Those veggies and flowers ordered from catalogs with great enthusiasm in the middle of winter have started to arrive. Oh my, what was I thinking?

Mister Z, the skinny spouse, despairs at the arrival of each load since it is he who must do the planting, weeding, watering and picking.

Yeah, I know he doesn’t even eat tomatoes, yet gardening is a guaranteed way to make me happy – and that has its rewards, right?

Makes me happy to think of the juicy heritage tomatoes and the quick snack cherry tomatoes in pots near the patio. Soon, plants will arrive from Jung Seeds in Wisconsin, bred for our local climate.

Picture Mister Z, with happiness in the forefront of his thinking, heading out to Norton’s for Mothers Day shopping. Hanging baskets of trailing flowers, petunias, pansies! Need I say more?

Spring offers many opportunities for rolling up your sleeves. In fact, this is National Volunteer Week.

If you are reading this on Friday morning, put the paper down for just a short time and go on over to Baker Methodist Church on East Main Street in St. Charles. Volunteers have opened the church doors for the Spring Rummage Sale – known widely for lots of items and lots of bargains.

Volunteers from Hearts of Hope in Geneva are organizing a golf outing for Monday, May 4, at the Prairie Landing Golf Course in West Chicago.

Looks like the St. Charles Park District has roles for volunteers in several areas. How about helping with nature programs? There are so many formalized ways to help. Consider being your own agent: help a neighbor with some chores; sit down with a friend and truly listen; or recruit a friend to join you as you volunteer.

The Geneva High School Robotics team placed 13th on April 3 at the Midwest regional competition, after going headto-head with other teams’ robots in this year’s Recycle Rush challenge, which consisted of stacking totes, “litter” and bins efficiently to gain the highest score. The regional competition took place at the University of Illinois in Chicago.

The competition is created each year by the organization of FIRST, a program that promotes science and engineering interest among children. The robotics team ended its season in 13th place out of 53 teams.

CAMPUS NOTES Student honored for foundation of website GENEVA – Geneva High School junior Brianna Carey of Geneva was presented with an engraved bronze medallion April 13 at an awards breakfast at the high school for being recognized as a distinguished finalist for Illinois in the 2015 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, according to a news release.

To merit the distinction, Carey founded “A Cutter’s Guardian Angel,” a website to help teens with their emotional struggles. The website has grown into an organization that helps those in need via social media, the Internet and community events, states the release.

Dear Abby: My wife and I have a friend, “Jonah,” whom we love dearly, but he has no filter. He’s college-educated, has a white-collar job and is over 50. The problem is, anytime we invite him for dinner or take food items to his house, he makes horrible remarks about my wife’s cooking, particularly when it’s a holiday party based on my wife’s Slavic heritage.

My wife is a really good cook.

No one else makes fun of these foods, many of which are common in the U.S., but Jonah makes negative comments every time. I have told him that it’s rude, and so has my wife.

We would hate not inviting him to future parties with our usual crowd, but it gets me upset when he does this. My wife has actually prepared an alternative meal for him so he won’t have to eat the “heritage-style” food. He even makes snide comments when I bring foods popular in other parts of the U.S. Abby, do we continue inviting

Dr. Wallace: I’m attending an all-girls private Catholic high school because my parents are trying to shield me from all the “evils” of teen life. I am ending my sophomore year and will be trying to convince my parents to let me return in the fall to the public high school that I attended in the ninth grade.

Many of the girls at this private school are snobs and think that they are better than the rest of us. When it comes to smoking, drinking, doing drugs and sex, private school girls are just as involved, or even more involved, than girls in the public high schools. Another reason to return to public school is that it is costing my parents a lot of money to send me to this private school.

I will admit that my GPA has improved at the private school. A school’s primary function is to provide a quality education and to instill the desire in all students to reach their academic capabilities.

Foot neuropathy isn’t ‘major’ problem, but it sure can hurt Dear Doctor K: I have neuropathy pain in my feet. What can I do to relieve it?

Dear Reader: Neuropathy, or nerve damage, is a remarkably common problem. I get asked lots of questions about it – both from readers of this column and from readers of the Harvard Health Letter, which I edit. It isn’t considered a “major” health problem by many doctors, because it isn’t potentially fatal. But, like many other problems not labeled as major by doctors, it sure can make people miserable and interfere with their lives.

Fortunately, there are several treatments that bring relief to most people who suffer with this condition. There are different types of neuropathy, but I’ll assume you have the most common type, called axonal neuropathy.

Neuropathy affects many of the nerves in your body. Each nerve is like a highway that connects your brain to the rest of your body. Signals from your brain travel down the nerves sending orders, such as the order for your muscles to move different parts of your body. Signals from your body travel up the nerves to your brain. When your fingers

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff touch something, for example, signals from your fingers tell the brain how cold and how hard that thing is, and whether touching it causes pain.

The longer a nerve is, the more likely it is to be affected by neuropathy. The nerves connecting your brain to your legs and feet are the longest, so the symptoms of neuropathy almost always begin in and are worst in the feet.

The most common symptoms of neuropathy are numbness, burning, or unpleasant sensations that people have a hard time describing. The loss of sensation in the feet can cause problems with balance when walking. If you can’t tell where your weight is being carried (is it on your heels or the balls of your feet?), your brain gets confused.

Among the most common causes of neuropathy are diabetes, alcohol abuse, an underactive thyroid gland and some types of cancer chemotherapy. However, about one out of every four people

with neuropathy has none of these known causes.

If you have any of the known causes of neuropathy, the first thing to do is treat the cause. If you’re diabetic, do everything you can to lower your blood sugar. If you drink too much, cut down. If you have an underactive thyroid, take your thyroid pills as directed and get regular thyroid blood tests.

The most widely used medicines for reducing symptoms are an anticonvulsant – either gabapentin (Neurontin) or pregabalin (Lyrica) – and tricyclic drugs, including desipramine. Other anticonvulsants and drugs that decrease the number and severity of muscle spasms also can be helpful, including phenytoin, carbamazepine, topiramate and baclofen.

Not all of these drugs help for everyone. But if you work closely with your doctor, the odds are good that you can find one that will give you considerable relief.

I know just what she’s going through. I’m 22 and will be getting married in three months. My brother-in-law will be giving me away instead of my father.

My dad started smoking when he was only 18, but he could not control his habit, and he died from lung cancer five months ago. It has been difficult to adjust to the fact that my father will not be there to walk me down the aisle. I had begged and pleaded with him to quit smoking, but he couldn’t do it, and he died 10 weeks after the doctor told him that he had lung cancer.

He was only 49 when he was snatched away from his family.

In bridge, part of the job of defenders is to make declarer work hard for his contract. It is frustrating for the defenders if they effectively gift declarer the tricks that he needs.

In this deal, for example, how should West make South work hard for his six-club contract after West leads the heart king?

South opened with a textbook three clubs: a good seven-card suit and 6-10 high-card points. North was surprised to learn that his side had a 13-card fit, and he might have immediately jumped to six clubs. If South also had the spade ace, he would have opened one club, not three clubs. But North cautiously used Blackwood before settling South into six clubs.

Declarer has 11 top tricks: one heart, three diamonds and seven clubs. He must get a spade trick.

But does West hold the spade ace or queen?

South wins the first trick with dummy’s heart ace, and East drops the two, giving count in the suit and showing an odd number.

Declarer cashes dummy’s three diamond winners, discarding his remaining heart, and ruffs the heart jack in his hand. Then he leads a spade toward dummy’s king-jack.

West must smoothly play second hand low. He knows his side needs two spade tricks to defeat the contract. He must not save declarer a guess by winning with the ace – or by thinking about it for a moment.
