Fox River firefighters get special training

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – When firefighters Wednesday heard “Mayday” over their radios, they knew someone was in serious trouble.

A firefighter had fallen into a basement after a fire weakened the first floor of a home and needed to be rescued.

The basement scenario was repeated multiple times Wednesday with a real, but controlled, fire at the Ruth Family Firefighter Training Center in Huntley.

Several firefighters from the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System Division II, including those from the Fox River and Countryside Fire/ Rescue District, participated in the training exercises.

“The more we can get the different fire companies training with each other, the stronger we are as a group,” said Greg Benson, the district’s fire chief.

The district’s firefighters go to Huntley twice a year for the training, which is scheduled at different times over a six-day period so multiple fire departments can participate.

More than 200 firefighters in all will get exposure to this month’s training exercises, Benson said.

mand officers. Over time, the fire crews learn what approaches are the most efficient, effective and safe, Benson said.

It took firefighters 35 to 45 minutes to complete the basement scenario two-anda-half years ago, but during the recent training some of the crews were completing it in as little as 14 minutes, Benson said.

Effort targets restoration of Big Woods School

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com AURORA – Members of the nonprofit Big Woods School Foundation hope to get Big Woods School in better shape before it celebrates its 100th birthday in 2018.

“We don’t have water; we don’t have electricity; we don’t have sewer; we don’t have heat,” foundation member Sonya Cunningham said of the building. “There’s nothing. It’s just a shell. But it’s in very good condition for almost a 100-yearold building, even with all the stuff it does not have.”

The one-room schoolhouse, located near Butterfield and Eola roads in Aurora, dates to 1918 and served students in first through eighth grades. It remained open until 1963, Cunningham said.

The school is near Batavia, which originally was called Big Woods for the wild growth throughout the settlement.

Batavia first was settled in 1833

by Christopher Payne and his family.

The foundation wants to turn the former school into a community center that the whole area can use, Cunningham said. The foundation formed about two years ago.

“We just got together and decided we had to do something to restore that building,” she said.

The Big Woods School Foundation is raising funds to restore and maintain the historic character of the 1918 Big Woods School building at Butterfield and Eola roads in Aurora. to $500,000 in work, she said.

The foundation has applied to have the school placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The school is next to Big Woods Congregational Church,

which sold the school to the foundation. Cunningham also is a member of the church, which was founded in 1835.

Cars burglarized in St. Charles

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is reminding residents to lock their cars after three vehicles reportedly were burglarized last week.

Reported Saturday, the burglaries happened in the late evening or early morning hours in the 4500 and 4700 block of Grandfield Drive,

according to a police news release.

Grandfield Drive is near Route 31 and Reserve Drive in St. Charles.

All of the vehicles were unlocked, said police spokesperson Lisa Blackwell, noting she could not disclose the items taken.

Residents can protect their vehicles against burglaries by locking their cars and removing personal items, she said,

noting the nicer weather will lead to people being out more.

There were no suspects Wednesday, Blackwell said.

Those with information about the burglaries are asked to call the police department at 630-377-4435.

Wasco fifth-graders knit for a cause

asloboda@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Eleven-year-old Danny Sheen’s initial reaction to a classroom knitting project was one of skepticism.

He and other boys in Aaron Clark’s fifth-grade class thought the skill was more for girls, he said.

Their doubts, however, quickly wore off as retired educator Janet Hornbostel taught the Wasco Elementary School class how to knit skeins of yarn into hats.

Knitting has become his top preferred downtime activity, Danny said, saying it’s difficult to stop once he starts, just like Pokémon.

And after enough practice, 11-year-old Eric Lasare said, he “can do it without even looking.”

Together, the 21 St. Charles School District 303 students have knitted enough hats to fill a standard plastic shopping bag to capacity.

Their creations – which were made possible through a $300 St. Charles Youth Commission grant – will be donated to LivingWell Cancer Resource Center in Geneva and Mutual Ground in Aurora, Hornbostel said.

Camilla Gostynski, 11, said she feels lucky to have this fun opportunity to help others. Her classmates seemed to agree.

Noting the activity is always tied to learning – it uses math and helps stu-

dents’ focus and concentration – Clark said her students have an opportunity to knit daily and often will pick

up their needles and yarn as she reads to them.

“They beg to knit,” Clark said.

Wednesday, some students worked on their projects at their desk while those needing assistance went into the hallway, where they gathered around Hornbostel.

“Look at all those increases,” Hornbostel said to Nic Travilla, 11. “Not to worry, though.”

Nic, who is still working on his first hat, said mistakes can lead to holes, and stitches sometimes must be undone.

“It gets a little bit complicated,” he said, but noted he still enjoys the hobby. “Me and my friends watch YouTube while we’re knitting.”

Lilly Verhage, 11, said the complications increase as the hats get closer to completion.

She’s nearing that point after messing up about three times on her first hat, she said, explaining she soon will have to use different needles.

Meanwhile, her classmate Nora Maloney, who learned to knit from her grandma years ago, was on her third hat. The 11-year-old said she has helped her peers with their knitting struggles.

“It’s fun getting to help them,” she said.

Officials work on compromise for east side St. Charles Dunkin’ Donuts

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Business owners and a St. Charles City Council committee this week moved one step closer to bringing a Dunkin’ Donuts to the east side of St. Charles.

Planning and Development Committee members Monday voted, 9-0, to recommend approval of two changes related to the proposed Dunkin’ Donuts site at 2701 E. Main St., the former site of a

Qdoba Mexican Grill restaurant.

The changes being considered are for a drive-thru stacking space reduction and a minor change to a planned unit development, or PUD, preliminary plan based on certain conditions.

A drive-thru would be on the west side of the building, according to an executive summary of the plan.

The owners of St. Charles Toyota, the business directly west of the proposed site, had

expressed concerns in 2014 about future Dunkin’ Donuts customers congesting the private drive that is situated between the dealership and the restaurant site.

On Monday, Dennis Alf, who owns the Toyota dealership with his sons, came to a tentative compromise with the franchisee and the property owner on some conditions for the two proposed changes to the plan.

The conditions include installing a pork chop-shaped

drive-thru exit that would allow for only eastbound turns and signage to direct vehicles to the signalized intersection of Lakeside Drive and Main Street east of the restaurant site, said Ellen Johnson, a planner in the city’s Planning Division.

A third condition calls for drainage issues to be addressed along the private drive, Johnson said.

CHRONIC EYELID INFECTION Chronic eyelid infection (“blepharitis”) is often caused by seborrheic dermatitis, which is characterized by excess oil secretion and frequently affects the scalp. This oil buildup, which leads to dandruff on the scalp, causes localized irritation, redness, burning, itching, and dryness near the eyes.

This problem can be treated at home, initially with the placement of warm compresses on the eyelids for about two minutes, followed by subsequent reapplications of the compresses to loosen the oil and scales. Next, the eye should be washed with a cotton swab moistened with diluted baby shampoo (one part shampoo to 20 parts water), followed by warm compresses. If this once-daily cleaning regimen does not prove effective within two weeks, the eye doctor should be consulted.

P.S. An untreated bacterial eye infection can lead to “ulcerative blepharitis,” which can cause eyelash loss, eyelid scarring, and corneal inflammation.

Kaneland considering leasing buses

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Kaneland School District 302’s bus fleet features more than a dozen buses that are more than 10 years old. Rather than buying replacements, five or 10 at a time, district officials are considering a leasing plan that would replace 30 buses, for two years at a time.

Associate Superintendent Julie-Ann Fuchs presented information at this week’s meeting of the district’s school board, listing the cost of buying five buses, buying 10 buses and leasing 30 buses. She said the district’s finance advisory committee suggests the leasing plan.

Among the positives, Fuchs said the district would have newer buses, including those with the latest safety features. Maintenance costs likely would drop. Among the negatives, Fuchs said the district would lose its flexibility on the issue.

“It’s my opinion that you will never own your fleet again,” Fuchs said.

Fuchs provided information about 61 buses in the district. Under a leasing plan, 30 would be replaced every two years.

Bid information was supplied from two vendors – Midwest Transit, which is the district’s current vendor, and Central States Bus Sales.

Midwest Transit provided costs for buying five buses ($420,040), buying 10 buses ($829,580) and leasing 30 buses for a two-year lease ($401,240).

Central States also provided the costs of buying five buses ($428,730), buying 10 buses ($850,960) and leasing 30 buses for a two-year

lease ($624,091).

The reason for the significant difference in leasing costs stemmed from Midwest Transit offering a trade-in amount of $337,900 for 30 buses. Central State’s trade-in offer was $161,000.

Without the trade-in figure, the Midwest Transit figure was $739,140, and the Central States figure was $785,091.

Tony Valente, who lost in the April 7 board election, was not at the meeting.

Board member Veronica Bruhl asked Fuchs about whether the district would have to be concerned about mileage.

Fuchs said there would be a mileage limit each year, for every bus. She said that already is watched in the district to make sure the mileage is spread out among the buses in the fleet for maintenance purposes. Teresa Witt, the board’s vice president, asked whether field trips were included in the mileage limit. Fuchs said yes, and she added the district likely still would own smaller buses used for some field trips.

Board members did not act on the issue, and more discussion is set for the future. Renee Goier, the district’s interim superintendent, said she understood it was “a really difficult decision for you to make. … You risk that you will never own your buses again.” Board member Peter Lopatin said the district would be giving up control.

In the past, board members have said the district was able to hold off on buying new buses in order to get through some difficult financial times.

“But it is the only reasonable way to replace some very old buses,” Goier said of the leasing plan.

A Chevrolet Volt – the county’s first electric vehicle – joined the Geneva campus last week, about two months after the Kane County Board approved its purchase.

“Electric vehicles are really growing, probably more than we all realize,” Resource Management Coordinator Cecilia Govrik told the Energy

and Environmental Committee on Wednesday.

About 15 models are available in the Midwest, and electric registrations in Illinois increased from 639 in July 2012 to about 5,700 last September, she said.

The Volt – which is a plugin hybrid electric vehicle – will be the primary vehicle for the Division of Environmental and Water Resources, Govrik said.

It has a fuel economy equivalent to 98 mpg and can be fully charged in four hours, she said.

A charging station is available at the government center.

Govrik said the Volt’s purchase supports the county’s sustainability plan goal of applying for green fleet recognition and the county’s commitment to reduce emissions.

Expected savings from the vehicle are an 82 percent reduction in fuel, a 64 percent reduction in emissions and more than $2,000 in maintenance costs over two years, Govrik said.

History comes alive in visit to Springfield Two weeks ago was spring break, a much-anticipated week off from school and responsibility.

My Instagram feed was filled with pictures of people on tropical vacations, island getaways and blissful cruises.

As for my family, we headed off on a quick jaunt to Springfield. My parents had both been there before, but my sisters and I had yet to embark on the historical and patriotic trip to the state capital.

I’ll admit, the Illinois State Museum, chock-full of natural history and fossils, wasn’t quite to my liking.

Neither were the semiclothed mannequins in the Native-American dioramas.

However, I enjoyed the elaborate gift shop, and my little sisters adored the children’s exhibit.

Our next stop, a tour of

Abraham Lincoln’s home, was definitely one of my favorite parts of the trip.

While waiting for our tour, my family and I explored the visitor center and watched a short video on Lincoln’s connections to Springfield.

The tour itself was fascinating, knowing that I was walking the same halls as one of America’s greatest leaders. And, I’m proud to say, as we made our way upstairs, I used the same handrail that Honest Abe used while he lived in the house. You know, just a simple brush with fame.

However, my favorite part of the trip was by far the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

I entered the museum with moderate knowledge and appreciation of Abraham Lincoln, and I exited with much more knowledge and respect for our 16th president.

THE WRITE PLACE Emma Chrusciel The museum hosts detailed exhibits that chronicle all aspects of Lincoln’s life, from a replica log cabin to models depicting his time in the White House. Strolling through the various exhibits literally felt like I was walking through Lincoln’s life.

The coolest parts of this museum were the two films about Abraham Lincoln.

However, they were far from your typical museum films.

“Ghosts in the Library” focused on the artifacts and documents found in the presidential library, and it featured mind-blowing holograms.

“Lincoln’s Eyes” described the struggles Lincoln faced as president, as well

as his triumphs. This one had awesome special effects, from seat vibrations to smoke and lights.

Both of these films were my favorite part of the whole museum, simply because they were unlike anything I had ever experienced before.

We worked up an appetite during our museum visit, and Obed and Isaac’s, a local eatery, was the solution to our hunger. Their “horseshoe” sandwiches, a Springfield original, were oh so unhealthy but oh so delicious.

Our last stop was Lincoln’s tomb, which was unfortunately closed during our visit. Still, looking at the outside of the memorial was incredible.

Just to think that I was standing right outside the final resting place of someone so influential was awesome. I hope to go back someday and

see the actual tomb inside the memorial.

Although it was just a brief getaway, I made many memories in Springfield.

Most importantly, it showed me how the past influences our present.

In particular, the Abraham Lincoln museum helped me realize how Lincoln’s ideas and actions changed the course of history. I’ve definitely gained a greater appreciation for him.

From history to horseshoe sandwiches to really cool films, I know Springfield will not be forgotten anytime soon.

Big plans for Radiant Raw Foods in St. Charles Business offers dehydrated veggies, fruits along with hosting artists, musicians, dancers

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – As a former break dancer, St. Charles resident Deecee Chung said he knows the importance of fueling up properly before doing a routine.

He hopes everyone, including dancers, will develop better eating habits as a result of his newly opened business, Radiant Raw Foods, at 1519 E. Main St., Suite 1100, in St. Charles. His business, which opened in February, sells dehydrated fruits and vegetables.

Chung, whose actual name is Daniel Chung, dehydrates bananas, pineapples, apples and other food using a commercial dehydrator that he designed. He has a background in designing heating systems.

“We’re getting the temperature below 112 to 118 degrees,” he said. “At that temperature, it’s the perfect temperature to just take out the water content and to preserve the juice and the enzymes and nutrients and vitamins. Up to 98 percent of the nutrients and enzymes are retained.”

Because the enzymes are preserved, the body is able to digest dehydrated food easily, he said. Dehydrating the food also intensifies the sweetness of it.

“It intensifies five to 10 times,” he said. “It’s great to see kids choose this over candy sometimes.”

He is partial to the dehydrated pineapple and banana that he makes.

“A lot of the banana chips that you find are fried and very salty,” Chung said.

It takes between 36 and 72 hours to dehydrate fruits and vegetables. Chung will shop for groceries up to three times a day

“The fresher the fruits and vegetables are, the better they taste when they are dehydrated,” he said.

Beyond the health aspects of dehydrated food, he sees it helping solve the problem of world hunger.

“We throw away so much food,” Chung said. “I have received bananas that were going to be thrown away. You just cut away the bad part. You can do so many different things. You could blend them with different fruits and vegetables and make a fruit leather/fruit roll-up. It’s healthy, and tastes amazing.”

Chung also wants to make it convenient for the general public to dehydrate their own food, and he wants to design a dehydrator that people can use in their homes.

He thinks that a dehydrator in one’s home should be as commonplace as a dishwasher. Right now, he is working with some large corporations that build consumer products.

“It’s just a great way to not throw away food,” he said.

In addition, the walls of the businesses are lined with art made by local artists. Chung is an artist himself.

As he noted, some of the break dancers and artists and musicians that perform at Radiant Raw Foods have never eaten an orange.

“It’s been quite an experience to introduce an orange or a pineapple to somebody, and it’s dehydrated,” he said. “They love it.”

Putting on his hat as an artist, Chung said he wants Radiant Raw Foods to introduce people to the fundamentals of art and show them how to express their creativity through art. The business will hold a “Hello Kitty” art exhibit/workshop from May 8 to June 8.

There will be an opening reception for the exhibit from 6

to 10 p.m. May 8, and there will be workshops from noon to 3 p.m.

Barrel+Rye offers fine food, comfy dining experience GENEVA – For those looking for a comfortable place to kick back with friends after a hard day of work, Geneva has a fine new option.

Barrel+Rye, at 477 S. Third St., suite 184, in downtown Geneva, occupies the space that formerly housed Michael Angelo’s Deli. With its four big screen TV sets, the eatery resembles more of a sports bar, but the quality of the food is many levels above what one would expect at such an establishment.

The low level lighting in the restaurant also adds to the restaurant’s intimate and comfortable feeling.

After looking through the menu, my dining companion and I decided to start out with the creole wings appetizer, which turned out to be an excellent choice. The wings had just the right amount of kick to them – spicy, but not hot enough to burn your mouth.

If you thought your mother made the best macaroni and cheese, your opinion might be changed after ordering the mac and cheese at Barrel+Rye. The restaurant’s dinner-only “opening weekend” will run from Thursday, April 16, through Sunday, April 19.

The following week, Shakou will resume its regular hours, which are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays; 11 to 1 a.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays; 11 to 2 a.m.

Fridays; 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Saturdays; and 4 to 10 p.m.

Sundays.

Shakou, at 312 Main St., St. Charles, follows the opening of Shakou Libertyville two years ago. The main floor at Shakou features a dining room with a sushi bar and a cocktail lounge with a bar.

Upstairs, there’s a sake room for small groups and an upper mezzanine with a bar area for before-dinner drinks and cocktail celebrations, a news release states.

The dinner menu, created by executive chef Sang Choi, will include items such as hot and cold appetizers, soups, salads, by-the-piece nigiri/ sashimi and maki ($3 to $7), signature maki rolls ($12 to

$22) and beef, chicken, fish, noodle and seafood cooked entrees ($17 to $39).

Restaurant specialties will include signature maki, such as the Black Widow – black rice, lightly battered fresh water eel, avocado topped with tempura crunch, sauteed scallops, tobiko and unagi sauce – and the Golden Lobster – lobster tempura, avocado and masago, wrapped in soy paper and topped with seared garlic egg yolk sauce, unagi sauce and wasabi mayo.

Among the signature cocktails are The Dragon, made with dragon berry and lemon rum, white cranberry juice, passion fruit purée, a grenadine floater and cherry garnish; and the Blueberry Lemon Drop Martini, made with Stoli Blueberry Vodka, sour and citrus juice and lemon garnish.

A portion of the proceeds from the opening weekend will go to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association as part of the Shakou Cares program, designed by the restaurant’s owners to help local organizations raise funds, the release states.

T. CHARLES – Playing six games in eight days has not allowed the St. Charles East girls soccer team much practice time of late.

How the Saints have been so successful defensively with no time to prepare between games comes as no surprise.

The team returns nearly the entire back line from last year’s Class 3A state runner-up squad, which has been a big reason why the Saints have given up only two goals in 10 games, all victories.

Offensively, the North Stars (9-2, 3-2 UEC River) got one run in the first inning and two in the second despite managing just one hit.

“Our hitting coach Brett Wikierak does a great job talking about approach and getting deep into counts and trying to get the starter out of the game. There’s not a lot of depth usually in the bullpen for a lot of high school teams, and if you get that starter out

of there – especially a quality arm like [Gosbeth] – you’ve got a good chance to really put some runs on the board,” Genke said.

At the plate, leadoff hitter Brendan Joyce set the tone for the North Stars, going 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Wright also added an RBI double in the fifth to help his own cause as seven North Stars had at least one hit.

In the sixth, West Chicago scored its one run on an RBI single from Jarod Smothers. However, in the seventh, North reliever Christian Sidoti set the Wildcats down in order, striking out the last two batters to end the game.

“We struggled a little bit defensively [Tuesday], and I felt it was time to shake a few things up,” Genke said.

“To be honest with you, we have a lot of depth, too, and it showed today.”

Ogiego usually doesn’t break stride as he marks a tee time or checks Pottawatomie’s tournament schedule.

One occasional conversation starter, however, makes continuing in such a manner tough.

April 22 will mark one year since longtime former club pro Jim Wheeler died at 68, a loss that stirred the Tri-Cities golf community but may have missed reaching a few distant corners.

Tournament shuffling: In a bid to boost participation, Ogiego and fifth-year Pottawatomie pro Ron Skubisz moved the course’s 50-andover tournament from the fall to the spring. Registration costs $60, and the deadline to register for the April 25 to 26 event is 7 p.m. Sunday.

Golfers will play 18 holes of stroke play on each day of the

tournament, which is open to all participants regardless of residency. Those interested can register at the pro shop.

Shifting the senior event opened space for a new, 36hole stroke play tournament for all golfers 12 and older, set for Sept. 12 and 13. It will be flighted after the first 18 holes, but the overall champ can come from any flight, depending on his or her final score.

“It’s kind of a best of the best type of thing. It’s one weekend. Get your clubs, go out and play and see where you match up with everybody,” Ogiego said. “Our men’s tournament [in July] is a match play tournament, so it’s usually just a head to head against one guy. This, you’re going to play against every single one that’s signed up.”

The registration deadline is 7 p.m. Sept. 6, but could come sooner if a full, 96-player field is reached. Cost is $60.

ST. CHARLES – Coming off consecutive losses earlier this week, St. Charles North baseball coach Todd Genke decided it was time to mix things up Wednesday.

The defense had been somewhat lacking in losses to end the Geneva series and start the West Chicago series Monday and Tuesday, respectively, so in the second game of a three-game series against the Wildcats, Genke worked some new faces into the lineup for defensive purposes.

Taste of ‘The Show’ perk for Coffey ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber Micah Coffey might just be a freshman in college, but he’s already got one Major League at-bat under his belt.

Sort of.

Coffey, a Batavia alumnus now playing baseball at Minnesota, got to hit in the eighth inning of an exhibition game the Gophers played earlier this year against the Minnesota Twins, part of the Twins’ spring training schedule.

Coffey pinch hit and flew out after swinging at the first pitch, but it’s an experience he won’t forget any time soon. Coffey went up against Michael Tonkin, who’s not currently on the Twins’ active roster but pitched in 34 big league games over the past two seasons.

Not many college freshmen can say they’ve faced that.

“That was unbelievable,” Coffey said. “I was pretty much in awe that whole day.

And to be able to get an at-bat and get a little taste of ‘The Show’ was a really fun experience and something I’ll never forget.”

The trip the Gophers took down to Fort Myers, Florida, was an incredible experience for Coffey. In addition to getting a taste of what Major League spring training is like, he said the team got to meet Torii Hunter, the Twins outfielder who’s been an MLB mainstay for much of the current Gophers’ lives.

“That whole day was just incredible; walking around a big league field and just watching how big leaguers go about their business was something that was fun,” Coffey said, “and you can kind of learn from that as to how you go about your business on the field every day. That whole experience in general was just incredible. The facilities that we were in, the game itself and getting to see the big leaguers do their thing was a really fun experience.

“When we were under the field taking [batting practice] before the game, and Torii Hunter came walking in and

So that was really sweet for him to do that, to just walk in and make it seem like it was no big deal to be around these kids. A lot of my teammates are from Minnesota, so they grew up huge Twins fans, so that was a really cool thing for a lot of the guys.”

Although the game against the Twins stands out, Coffey, an infielder, said it’s been a great freshman campaign so far.

He’s earned some playing time, appearing in 17 of the team’s 32 games and starting six of those. He’s hitting .256 in 43 at-bats.

“It’s been a blast,” he said. “It’s been a big learning process, this whole thing. It’s been fun to see what baseball’s like at the college level, kind of get my feet wet a little bit this year. Overall, I’m having a blast up here. It’s been a really fun start.”

“I didn’t play much the first three weeks of the season, and then I started kind of getting phased in here and there to where now I’m pretty much in the mix most weekends to get some amount of playing time. It’s definitely met my expectations. I knew I wasn’t going to come in and be ‘the guy’ every day. But it’s been fun to get a little bit of opportunity here and there to make an impact.”

As for the future, Coffey and the Gophers – who include senior outfielder Jake Bergren of St. Charles North – still have a good chunk of this season left to play. But Coffey has goals for beyond this season, as well. “[My goals are] to get into that role where I’m playing every day and to where I have a bigger impact on the field every day. But also to keep learning, too. Never stop learning about the game and studying about the game,” Coffey said. “Just to keep

working, keep working with these guys and keep pushing ourselves to go forward, make an impact in the Big Ten and also win Big Ten championships.”

Driving amid severe storms, he pulled to the side of the road when hail cracked his windshield just outside Ashton.

With that, Gerace saw a funnel cloud touch down in the near distance – the tornado that pushed its way through northwest Illinois and leveled the community of Fairdale.

Once he found safety, Gerace and his family, which owns the track at 50W086 Route 64 in Maple Park, immediately corresponded about coordinating a tornado relief fundraiser. On Saturday, as part of a practice session ahead of the April 25 season opener, the Speedway will donate all of the proceeds from a $5 general admission charge to the effort.

“It didn’t take much to come up with the idea or approve the idea,” Gerace said. “It was just like, ‘Hey, what do you think?’ ” In addition, $5 from every $20 pit pass will be donated. Pits open at 3 p.m., with the grandstand opening at 4. Practice is expected to last until 9.

The night is typically free to all involved, but Gerace said there’s been no quibbling about the recent maneuver.

“We hope it’s a good night for the racing community to come together,” he said.

Sycamore Speedway draws from throughout the region, and many drivers have ties to DeKalb County, especially in the Spectator and Compact divisions.

Gerace said the uncle of Super Late Models driver Jay Brendle lost his Kirkland home in the tornado.

Proceeds of concession and beer sales also will be donated to tornado relief.

‘Tight’ blood sugar control may not be best course for some Dear Doctor K: I have Type 2 diabetes. For years, my doctor emphasized the importance of tight blood sugar control. But I recently read that tight control might not make sense for everyone. Why not?

Dear Reader: Millions of people with diabetes, and their doctors, are asking themselves the same question. It’s a confusing and controversial area. I’ll do my best to put it in context and to explain my own views.

People with Type 2 diabetes have high levels of blood sugar if they don’t take medication that lowers their blood sugar level.

Some medicines that successfully lower blood sugar – particularly insulin and sulfonylurea drugs – can be too successful. However, they can drop sugar levels too low. This can produce confused thinking, sleepiness, falls and fractures, loss of consciousness and even death.

So, the goal in treating diabetes is to lower high blood sugar levels to normal, but not to below normal. Getting the levels down to normal is called “tight control” of blood sugar.

There are two ways of measuring blood sugar. You can measure the sugar level at the moment

Most doctors urge their diabetic patients to aim for an HbA1c of 7 percent or less. This is considered tight control.

Aiming for tight blood sugar control makes sense for almost all patients when they are first diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

In large part, that’s because it often can be achieved with diet and exercise alone. Diet and exercise sometimes can lower blood sugar levels to normal without the risk of dropping them too low.

Several studies over the past decade have indicated that using medicines to achieve tight control in older ill patients may lead to worse health than shooting for somewhat less than tight control.

Tight control may be too much of a good thing. A more modest goal (targeting an HbA1c level between 7 percent and 8.9 percent, for example) might make more

sense.

A recent study of 1,288 people age 65 or older found that about two-thirds of people in relatively poor health had achieved an average HbA1c of 7 percent or less over the 10-year study period.

That sounds like good news: Controlling blood sugar helps prevent long-term health problems.

But the authors of the study argue that for the sicker patients, that long-term benefit would likely be outweighed by the short-term risks of periodically causing dangerously low blood sugar. Their study did not directly demonstrate such health risks; it was not designed to do so.

If you are taking insulin or sulfonylurea drugs, particularly if you have several other diseases besides diabetes, talk to your doctor. You might benefit from more frequent home blood sugar testing to detect low blood sugar. If the testing reveals that your blood sugar sometimes gets below normal, maybe it’s better to reduce the dose of medicine a bit.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 75-year-old grandmother, and I recently fell and broke my hip. While I was in the hospital, I was wondering how my 77-year-old husband was going to take care of me. He has a very hard time cooking, and he can barely boil water for his tea.

I could not believe it when I was released from the hospital and arrived home to see that my two granddaughters, ages 16 and 15, had solved the problem even before it started! Their plan is that their mom drives them over about half an hour before school and the three of them tidy the house and make breakfast for Grandma and Grandpa, and set out the food for Grandpa to microwave for our lunch. Then after school, these three angels prepare supper and run any errands we might need.

I have read a lot of negative reports about today’s teens, and I’m sure it’s all true, but I never read much about the wonderful teens who donate their time doing good deeds for others. My granddaughters certainly fall into this category.

Dr. Wallace, will you help an old sick granny feel a lot better by letting the world know how much I appreciate my wonderful granddaughters. It’s time we read about the good teens. – Granny, Seattle, Washington Dear Granny: I agree! It’s always enjoyable to hear nice news about teens.

We often hear what’s bad about the younger generation, but there is far more that’s good about them.

Too bad so much of it is overlooked.

I don’t smoke, and I am not planning to ever smoke, but I’d like to know if smoking really stunts one’s growth as a teen. – Anita, Burlington, Vermont Dear Anita: Your grandmother needs to continue spreading the word to teens about the “evils” of smoking. However, stunting a teen’s growth isn’t one of those evils. If it were, we would have many more teens avoiding cigarettes!

South starts with seven top tricks: three spades, one heart (the first trick), one diamond and two clubs. He will take the diamond finesse for his contract. If it wins, he will collect two overtricks. If the finesse loses, perhaps hearts will be 4-4 or the defenders will err.

When West leads a low heart, which promises at least one honor in the suit, and dummy’s king wins the first trick, East must play his queen. This serves two purposes: It tells partner about the queen and jack, allowing him to underlead the ace on the next round; and it unblocks the suit. Declarer will take the losing diamond finesse, whereupon the defenders can run four heart tricks – but only if East unblocked the queen at trick one.

There are two other points.

From the Rule of Eleven, East knows South has only one heart above the six, so playing the queen cannot cost. And no, the queen cannot be a singleton ... unless South opened one no-trump with six hearts in his hand.

How to live large in a tiny house

By JULIA CASWELL DAITCH Special to The Washington Post I love the tiny house movement.

I love the efficiency of it. I love the flexible use of space. I love the things that fold out from the wall, and who doesn’t love miniature things – so cute! But when I think about it for my lifestyle, it would be darling – for about the first week. Then, after tripping over my family during that week, I’d start thinking about an addition or maybe a new house.

When I was in architecture school, I had a professor by the name of Kaya Arikoglu.

He would say, “You can’t afford the mansion, but you might be able to afford one room of that mansion.”

I love that philosophy – it really works, and I have used it over and over again throughout my architectural career.

About 14 years ago, I designed our vacation home on a pretty tight budget and I used this philosophy. Yes, I had to make sacrifices – I couldn’t have the grand kitchen, the palatial bathroom, the separate dining room, the to-die-for master bedroom. I had to make the decision that one room,

The same system works for receipts.

Or a simple, very low-tech solution to organizing receipts is to use two bankers’ spikes. Get in the habit of cleaning receipts out of your wallet or purse daily.

Place receipts on one of the spikes as they come in. When one spike is full, start the other.

If you haven’t needed any of the receipts in the time it takes you to fill a spike, chances are you never will. When you fill up the second spike, throw out all the receipts on the first.

Walsh: Yard sales are great for getting rid of lot of stuff fast, but you have to accept that you’re not going to make much money.

If you have patience, a nice day, some extra time and a great sense of humor, then have a yard sale. If not, donate.

is a good platform for ridding homes of clutter?

Walsh: EBay is a great place to assess the value of things.

(Generally things are worth less than you think.)

To make money, use eBay or something similar. To get rid of clutter fast (you’re not going to make much money, though), try a yard sale.

Q: I have a box of orphan electronics cords: coaxial cables, A/V cables to connect TVs and DVD players, phone cords, ethernet connectors from old modems. What can I do with these? Recycle? Donate? Trash?

Walsh: If you don’t need them, pack them up, say goodbye and send them off to a donation center.

Q: What do you think of having yard sales? Are they generally worth the time and effort, or do you think it would just be better to donate the stuff I’m getting rid of?

Q: What is your formula for keeping clothes? How often

Q: I’m a 30-something getting married this year, and for various reasons I dislike the idea of registering for a boatload of new household items, let alone formal china or anything like that. However, I do love to cook and entertain, so I feel a little like I shouldn’t give up on a registry altogether. Do you have any advice on how to approach this?

Walsh: A wedding registry can easily get out of control. It’s great that you have such a good perspective on it. Choose only items that you love and know you’ll use. Don’t stress! And please send me a piece of your wedding cake!
