Last year, the park district took over the space to fill our community’s need for access to affordable theater and arts.

Research shows that cultural arts provide endless benefits to the community.

Lisa Pivaronas, cultural arts coordinator at Playhouse 38, has seen these benefits first hand. “[My] favorite thing about my job is watching a shy or quiet child or adult take that first step of trying out acting and blossoming into their role on stage,” she said. “Watching that transformation is the best.” “[Participants] are able to explore different ways of thinking, using their imagination for character development, and have a lot of laughs

in the process,” she continued. “They get surrounded by their cast mates who become a little community to support them. … Unlike sports, there are never any defeats and no losing team, so we can all be victorious.”

With a bachelor of arts in photography and experience in production and directing, Pivaronas’ passion for the arts drives the success of this intimate theater’s programming.

“It’s very hectic when it’s show time,” Pivaronas said.

“There’s always something to be working on, whether it’s reading scripts, working on a set, collecting props, aiming lighting, looking for sound effects or running our classes.”

Pivaronas is always searching for new offerings to get the community engaged with Playhouse 38. She works with instructors to design creative classes for all ages, including eight brand-new programs for this summer.

Classes such as “Acting Out” allow the youngest of hams, those ages 5 to 10, to

harness their enthusiasm as they learn performance skills. Older students, ages 10 and older, can learn to talk like the Queen of England or Sherlock Holmes in “Dialects.” Playhouse 38 also will add improvisation classes like “Just Winging It” and “Let’s Laugh! It’s Improv!” for teenagers and adults.

Beyond classes, Pivaronas coordinates plays, musicals and productions. Performances of “Charlotte’s Web” will take place May 16 to 18. More snow? Unlikely but possible

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Odds are Kane County saw the season’s last 1-inch snowfall Monday, but a meteorologist with the National Weather Service said the region isn’t in the clear yet.

“It’s not out of the realm of possibility,” meteorologist Mike Bardou said.

Records dating to the early 1870s show there have been only 11 other calendar days on or after April 14 to have at least 1 inch of accumulating snow, he said.

Such an occurrence most recently happened three decades ago on April 16, 1983, Bardou said.

He said the latest day that at least an inch of snow fell in Chicago was May 3, 1907.

On Monday, Chicago officially observed 1.4 inches of snow, bringing the seasonal total to 82 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

Communities in Kane

County saw slightly more flakes, as trained spotters measured 1.5 inches in Batavia and 1.7 inches in Elburn, the weather service reported.

The mid-April snowfall happened on the same day that also recorded a high temperature over 60 degrees, Bardou said, noting 63 degrees was recorded around midnight.

“Never in the period of record for Chicago had there been a day with a high temperature over 60 degrees that also had at least one half-inch of snow,” the National Weather Service states on its website.

While there is potential for a little snow mixed in with precipitation this weekend, the weather should be more springlike in the immediate future, Bardou said.

“Over the next week or so, we’re not really looking for any accumulating snow,” he said.

Kane County to discuss puppy mill restrictions

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County soon might join other nearby communities in placing restrictions on puppy mills.

The Public Health Committee expressed interest in the topic Tuesday after Kane County Animal Control Administrator Robert Sauceda delivered his monthly report.

“I sense a lot of interest in this,” said Kane County Board member Monica Silva, who chairs the committee.

Cook County last week passed an ordinance that prohibits the sale of commercially bred dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores. Chicago also has approved a similar ban.

The committee is expected to discuss the issue at its next meeting. Barb Jeffers, the county health department’s executive director, said the county should work with the State’s Attorney’s Office as it develops its own ordinance.

In other news, Sauceda received unanimous support

to change the name of Kane County Animal Control to Kane County Animal Care and Control.

Jeffers also provided the committee with a more detailed look at the County Health Rankings, which were released in March by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

Kane County ranked ninth out of 102 counties – which was up from 12th place last year – but Jeffers said it is

difficult to compare the 2014 and 2013 results because the factors on which the rankings are based change.

“Health is not going to the doctor,” Jeffers said. “It’s more than that.”

This year, Kane County scored well on such new criteria as residents’ access to nutritious food (Kane scored 8.7 out of 10), the percent of residents with access to exercise opportunities (89 percent), and drinking water violations (zero), Jeffers said.

that Kane County’s ratio of population to mental health providers is higher than the state’s, and 81 percent of its workforce drives alone to work, she said.

Going forward, Jeffers encouraged the committee to consider how each project, policy or plan will affect residents’ health and to maximize health-promoting factors of each project, policy or plan.

“It’s hard to live a healthy life if you live in an unhealthy place,” she said.

‘Civil Action’ lawyer turns to effort on climate change

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Nationally renowned lawyer Jan Schlictmann, whose personal injury case was the subject of a book and movie, “A Civil Action,” was the guest at a reception for him, held Tuesday at the Geneva law firm of Foote, Mielke, Chavez and O’Neill.

Schlichtmann is scheduled to lecture at the Northern Illinois University College of Law for the Marla Dickerson Lecture on Public Interest at 3 p.m. today when he said he will announce The Climate Project.

“I intend to present to the students and the faculty and general population of NIU that we have a major challenge of our time – the environment,” Schlictmann said. “And that we need young minds working with older minds to help us think about the thinking that is changing the climate.

So I feel as a lawyer, as a citizen of the planet, now is the time to start talking openly about these things and to heed the warnings that the scientists are giving us on a daily basis that we need to take action. ... We are running out of time.”

Schlictmann said the urgency is because the tipping point is estimated to be some-

time in the 2030s where conditions of climate change will be irreversible.

Changes now, he said, will increase the quality of life.

Attorney Kathleen Chavez said Schlictmann is friends with her and fellow attorney Robert Foote, so the firm hosted the reception so local attorneys, law students, law professors and judges could meet him.

Schlichtmann received national recognition for his representation of eight families in Woburn, Mass., in 1986 against W.R. Grace and Beatrice Co. in connection with the contamination of the city’s water supply that caused leukemia.

BATAVIA – The attorney for a woman charged in the stabbing death of a Chicago man has raised doubts as to whether she is fit to stand trial.

Latoya Baines, 27, a Batavia Apartments resident, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the April 30, 2012, stabbing death of Chicago resident Gerald J. Jackson, 25. Police said the stabbing was the result of a domestic dispute.

Her defense attorney, Sandra Byrd, has raised concerns about whether she is fit to stand trial. “Defendant’s attorney raises a bona fide doubt as to defendant’s fitness to stand trial,” according to court records.

The Kane County Diagnostic Center will evaluate her fitness. Her next court hearing is set for May 30.

Baines remains in the Kane County Jail on a $750,000 bond. She has been in custody for 715 days.

ST. CHARLES – Politicians, policymakers and grassroots organizers Tuesday gathered at the Arcada Theater to urge residents to get involved.

Attendees at the Sixth Annual Chicago and Illinois Tax Day Tea Party nearly filled the theater’s floor seating and balcony.

They heard from more than 12 speakers, some of which promoted their candidacies and nearly all of which spoke to the Tea Party’s values of fiscal responsibility, limited government and free markets.

The event is usually held

in cold weather outdoors in Chicago, but the party opted to hold it indoors this year, said Denise Cattoni, founder of the Illinois Tea Party.

Among the first speakers was Senate candidate and State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove. He told the crowd that government taxes too much and spends too much.

“All of us as individuals can make much better use of the dollars ... let us spend those dollars, and that’ll help get the economy going,” Oberweis said.

Other guests included Joe Walsh, former U.S. congressman and current talk show host of AM560 The Answer.

Valleybrook Community Church finds new home

On Easter Sunday, the church will hold its first service in the Kaneland Middle School at Meredith Road, at 1N137 Meredith Road, Maple Park.

There will be a reception at 9:30 a.m., followed by the service at 10 a.m.

“It will give us not only a bigger space for worship, but also more classrooms for Sunday School,” said the Rev. Brian Smith, Valleybrook’s founding pastor. He grew up in Batavia.

Valleybrook first opened in its doors in the fall of 2002, meeting on the campus of Broadview Academy in La Fox. Valleybrook began as a “daughter church” of First Baptist Church of Geneva.

Smith said the church eventually plans to build a permanent home, but he doesn’t know when.

“There is a family willing to donate to us eight acres of land on Hughes Road, just west of Hughes Creek Country Club,” Smith said. “When the time is right to build, I’m sure we’ll know. We’re open to following God’s timeline on this.”

Program focused on equine-assisted therapy for military personnel, families

APLE PARK – The organizers of the Boots and Hooves said they knew they had something special when veterans started opening up on the morning of the organization’s first program.

“They just started talking about the issues they are facing in life,” said Andre Renier, one of the group’s equine assistants.

The nonprofit organi zation Boots and Hooves focuses on equine-assisted psychotherapy for military personnel and their families, said co-founder Jerry Paulsen, a U.S. Army veteran. This include those with post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries and emotional or social issues.

This year, Gerald Paulsen set out to create the Boots and Hooves organization when he couldn’t find any other five-day equine program in the country. Its co-founders are Matt Ruddick and Paulsen, the owners of Promise Equestrian Center, 45W050 Beith Road, Maple Park.

Boots and Hooves will hold its second program from June 23 through June 27. Its pilot program was held from March 17 to 21 at the equestrian center. The 10 participants in the pilot said they were grateful for the experience, which was offered free of charge thanks to donations and volunteers.

“The stuff I shared [here] in group, I haven’t shared in seven years,” said Obom Bowen, a retired U.S. Marine who came from Atlanta to participate in the program with his wife, Ana. Bowen said there is an energy and gentleness the horses give that just can’t be put in the classroom. His favorite horse at the program was Chevy, an 8-year-old percheron with a head weighing 125 pounds.

the family’s Naperville home and interacting with people outdoors, Barry said.

Barry came to the program without her son and has found solace sharing her son’s story with other veterans.

“Matt and Jerry have given us hope,” Barry said.

The price of ‘free’ information Why can FOIA requests cost so much?

athy Kapusta filed a Freedom of Information Act request of St. Charles District 303 in December that generated 2,457 pages, took 13 people 88 hours to complete at a cost of $16,740.

Why did it cost so much?

Because, as District 303 spokesman Jim Blaney explained, a lawyer spent 71 of those hours reviewing those pages, that fee was $15,975.

“It was at the board’s request that we include an estimate and the amount of time it takes,” Blaney said. “Also, an estimate of the cost involved preparing it, if it’s over an hour of time.”

Kapusta’s request involved what are called procurement cards, used by school districts and other public bodies. She sought copies of all bills, invoices canceled checks, receipts, supporting documentation and monthly statements relating to a BMO Corporate MasterCard used by the high schools’ principals, administrators and athletic departments, among other items.

Kapusta disputed the cost and how long it took to respond to her request.

“The way I look at it, I think they are intentionally trying to put such a high number on my FOIA request to prevent me and others from looking into their financial records,” Kapusta said. “I went through those pages pretty quickly, and it should have taken no more than a couple of hours to redact, not 71 hours.”

Illinois’ Freedom of Information Act went into effect July 1, 1984, according to the Illinois State Bar Association.

And though it has been updated several times since then – the last time in 2010 – its basis remains the same: “Public records” held by “public bodies” are subject to disclosure upon request, unless they are cov-

Many public bodies, including District 303, Geneva District 304 and Kaneland District 302, report their FOIA requests, time spent and cost to fulfill them in monthly reports. The City of Geneva reports the requests, time spent to answer them, and whether there was a cost to the requester.

Sugar Grove Township resident Jerry Elliott occasionally files FOIA requests of Kaneland District 302, but usually, he said, he just asks for information if he can’t find it on the district’s website.

“They never have denied my requests and never complained about how much they cost,” Elliott said. “They have complained that I won’t accept some answers.”

Elliott said he sees significant value in the open records law.

“It goes back to my suspicious nature,” Elliott said.

“Anyone in government does

not want you to know what is going on and will do any kind of divisive things to keep the information from you.”

Julie-Ann Fuchs, Kaneland’s assistant superintendent for business, said the district complies with all laws associated with FOIA requests.

“The law also limits the amount of time in which we have to respond, which also creates challenges for district staff,” Fuchs said in an email.

“While staff are responding to FOIA requests, they are not doing other important or required tasks that often need to be completed in a given timeframe as well.”

Esther Seitz, an attorney with Donald Craven who represents Illinois media in FOIA and open meetings issues, said the burden of fulfilling information requests is the cost of doing business.

“Section one [of the act] articulates the public policy that complying with the FOIA

is a primary duty of a public body,” Seitz said. “The legislature means that one of the significant public functions of a public body is to provide public records. If they do not

like their job, then get a job in the private sector.”

McKittrick said the city cannot charge the requester

for the time spent, even if the information sought is to be used it for a product or marketing for a company.

“It may not be a lot of money, but all of it is paid for by our citizens,” McKittrick said.

“It’s not fair to them to have to pay for marketing a company in another community.”

McKittrick said she spoke to state legislators “but they will not address the problems of FOIA for fear of being branded by the media of not wanting ‘transparency’ or not supporting ‘open government.’ ” “So, as a result, we have a law that is not in keeping with the spirit in which it was originally written and wastes tax dollars,” McKittrick said.

“We have, over the years, experienced the unfortunate situation where elected officials have asked for information based purely on curiosity,” Burns said. “And such requests, oftentimes, detract from professionals staff doing the jobs they are assigned to do as the goals and objectives set by the council.”

Burns said the council’s job is to create policy and for professional staff to carry it out – not for aldermen to tell department heads how to run things.

“That is not good government,” Burns said. “It is in-

efficient, ineffective and, I believe, it creates a culture [of] distrust amongst and between council members and between council and professional staff. We agreed when we see such overtures, we need to tell each other ... to back off.”

Esther Seitz, an attorney who represents Illinois media in FOIA and open meetings issues, said the powers of government are supposed to be separated, so one can check on the performance of the other.

“They have to have information made available to

them to make that assessment and not make it blindly,” Seitz said. “As elected officials of that particular public body, they have a unique and exceptional obligation to make sure other factions of that public body are doing their job properly.”

Creating needless work for the public body, and then not putting the information to use, does not further open government and transparency, Seitz said.

Batavia Assistant City Administrator Jason Bajor, who is the city’s FOIA officer, said the city has no restriction on requests for information among elected aldermen.

“Whenever an official asks for information, it is provided, the same as it would be if a citizen asked for it,” Bajor said. “There is no policy that would preclude us from providing an elected official that information.”

GENEVA – When a Geneva alderman asked for information at an open meeting, Mayor Kevin Burns admonished him for violating a standard the council members had agreed upon.

According to the policy, elected officials would not request additional work from professional staff if it falls outside action taken at a meeting. And later, a private citizen filed a Freedom of Information Act request, and 3rd Ward Alderman Dean Kilburg said the citizen got the information Kilburg had asked for.

Volunteer tutors learn their own lessons Articles on adult literacy typically cite statistics like this, from the National Assessment of Adult Literacy – 45 percent of adults in the United States are English-language literate only at the basic level or below.

The articles usually continue with examples of the many barriers limited literacy presents: barriers to education, employment, involvement in children’s education, and even to performing life’s most basic tasks, such as driving, shopping or visiting the doctor.

But as I reflect back on my years of teaching adults who struggle with reading, writing or learning English, I never remember my students for what they couldn’t do. To the contrary, I am struck by all the things I didn’t know until my students taught me about them – how to set a pick in basketball, how

I now think of myself less as being confined to the traditional role of teacher, but as someone who – in equal measures – both teaches and is taught.

Similarly, many of the volunteer tutors I work with in Waubonsee Community College’s Adult Literacy Project have told me that they learn more from their students than they feel they can offer in return.

I think this is the primary, but often overlooked, reward for volunteering as a literacy tutor.

Waubonsee’s Adult Literacy Project began in 1985, and several of its tutors have been working with the program almost since its inception.

Project staff train volunteers to work as tutors in Waubonsee’s adult-education classes, to tutor adult students one-on-one or to lead group tutoring sessions.

Tutoring covers topics such as reading, writing, math and learning English as a second language.

with students two hours a week at a time and at a public place that is convenient for them both.

The Adult Literacy Project provides all materials used in tutoring.

Tutors are welcome to use the tutor resource room at Waubonsee’s Aurora Campus, which includes space for one-one-one tutoring, computers and a large resource library.

Project staff always are available to provide advice and instructional support to tutors and students.

Our volunteers represent a diverse range of backgrounds, ages and professions, but they share patience, a desire to learn and an appreciation of different cultures.

No prior experience in teaching or tutoring is required.

Over the past 29 years,

our program has trained and matched more than 2,000 volunteers, but we have a continual need for new tutors; currently, we have a list of more than 30 students waiting to be matched.

Spring Clean Up items will be collected May 3, for residents east of the river and May 17 for westside residents.

Note items must be placed on the curb – not in the street – before 7 a.m. to ensure pickup.

GENEVA – The Kane County Coroner’s Office is the latest facility to accept unwanted prescription drugs for disposal, according to a news release.

“There are some DEA [Drug Enforcement Administration] prescription dropoff points in the county, but my goal is to promote this program heavily, and get as many sites as possible in the county. We will take any medication from anywhere in the county,” Coroner Rob Russell said in the release.

Prescription drugs will be accepted at the coroner’s office from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. The coroner’s office is on the Kane County Government Center campus, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva.

Proper prescription drug disposal is important because studies have shown that prescription drug abuse promotes heroin use and addiction, ac-

cording to the release.

The release states that many prescriptions, such as painkillers, have been stolen from medicine cabinets because people who no longer need the medications are unaware of an outlet to dispose of them properly.

The coroner’s office also will accept medications during two upcoming Saturdays: April 26 and May 3.

April 26 is National Drug Take Back Day. Dropoff times are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The May 3 collection will be in conjunction with a public open house set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tours of the office and morgue will be age-appropriate and sensitive to all who enter, according to the release.

“This office belongs to the people of Kane County, and most of them have never been invited to see it,” Russell said.

“I want to hear the opinions of what they see.”

• A resident of the 1000 block of Center Drive in St. Charles Township reported Thursday, April 3, that a green pickup truck drove on his property around noon and damaged about 30 yards of one tire width of grass. He reported the truck did similar damage around 7 a.m. March 28.

• A property owner in the 44W300 block of Main Street in Blackberry Township reported Monday, April 7, that someone trespassed on her property the previous week. On Saturday, April 5, she reportedly found a shed door partially open, but nothing appeared missing. A portion of the back door, which enters the garage, also was reportedly moved enough to allow someone to look into the garage. An outside vent was also missing two screws.

8OBITUARIES WILLIAM HAYDEN MATENS Born: Aug. 30, 1944 Died: April 13, 2014 ST. CHARLES – William “Bill” Hayden Matens, 69, of St. Charles, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014, with his loving wife by his side. He was born Aug. 30, 1944, to Robert and Gladys (Cremeens) Matens, in Champaign.

Bill graduated from Illinois State University in 1967 and joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as a special agent in 1969, serving in the Jackson, Natchez, Albuquerque and Denver offices.

His roles in the FBI included bomb technician, hostage negotiator, counterterrorism investigator and coordinator for the Denver Fugitive Task Force. He was a team leader for the investigation of the first World Trade Center bombing, as well as the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

Following his retirement, he served as the Midwest regional director of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI Inc. Bill was a meticulous gardener, loved to travel and – above all else – family and friends meant the world to him.

He is survived by his wife, Barb;

two sons, Kenneth (Carrie) Matens of Firestone, Colo., and Kevin (Kathy) Matens of Littleton, Colo.; and six grandchildren, Stephany, Allison, Aiden, Abigail, Aric and Quentin. He also is survived by his brother, Anthony (Judy) Matens of Bloomington; sister, Karen (Vernon) Wilson of Ellsworth, Ill.; nieces; nephews; mother-in-law, Joan M. Blume; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jean married Jeff Sherry on Dec. 20, 1989, and had resided in Cape Coral, Fla., since October 2001, living in the Fox Valley area for the prior years.

She was a loving wife and mother and was loved by all. She was a current and active member with the Cape Coral Moose Lodge, as well as the St. Charles Moose Lodge during the late 1970s and early 1980s. She enjoyed and was extremely talented in a variety of craft makings and loved making her house a home.

She is survived by her husband, Jeff Sherry; son, Scott (Cathie)

Bonine; daughter, Stacey (Joe) Melby; four granddaughters, Ariane Bonine (Chris Sanchez), Jessica (Brandon) Kemp, Elizabeth Hauser (Eric Hacker) and Samantha (Ivan) Valle; two grandsons, Joey Melby and Michael Hauser (Caitlyn Freese); and two great-grandchildren, Bradley Kemp and Madison Hacker.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward Bonine; and her brother, Richard Warne; as well as her parents.

SUGAR GROVE – Research into standards-based grading continues at Kaneland School District 302, with officials taking a look at how students are assessed and concepts are mastered.

Erika Schlichter, dis trict director of educational services for those in sixth through 12th grades, explained at Monday’s district board meeting how a different approach can help determine just how well a student understands a topic, in ways much deeper than a letter grade could.

She made clear, however, that it didn’t mean that the district had any thoughts of doing away with letter grades at the middle and high school levels. The district does not issue letter grades at the elementary level.

“This is more about making grades more meaningful and not about dropping grades,” Schlichter said. “In the end, the actual report card might look the same. It might look different. … I don’t see many secondary schools abandoning grades.”

She said teachers participating in the program are looking into determining how they could “allow students to redo something to show that they mastered it.” And also, she said, a letter grade might not be enough to determine that. A “B” grade, for instance, could mean that a student mastered two-thirds of a lesson, but might not know much about the remaining third.

And while district officials will continue to take a hard look at how students can be measured, they also revealed some information about what parents in the district think of their policies and personnel.

Superintendent Jeff Schuler shared some results from a recent parent satisfaction survey. Schuler identified ar-

eas that were cause for celebrations, as well as those in which study and improvement would be necessary.

According to information presented at the meeting, parents said that they, in general, think that teachers provide just the right amount of homework, with 65 percent of people answering that they “strongly agree” or are “very satisfied” with that. Among other items listed in “questions with highest results” were that teachers treated parents respectfully (58 percent), schools are clean and well-kept (57 percent) and teachers are caring, dedicated and competent (51 percent).

Among the items listed in “questions with lower results” were how well activities match student interests (7 percent), the satisfaction with current opportunities for parent involvement (7 percent), how assessments and grading evaluate learning (6 percent), how administrators create a learning environment (6 percent) and how children consistently are prepared for the next education level (6 percent).

Also, the district collected comments from parents, but officials did not list any of the comments at Monday’s meeting. Asked by board member Pedro Rivas whether anything on the survey surprised him, Schuler said he was “pleasantly surprised” by the perception of relationships.

He said on the other side, on the subject of lesson engagement, “we want to dig into that more.”

Consuming stories online too quickly

By MICHAEL S. ROSENWALD The Washington Post Earlier this month, I wrote a story for The Washington Post about how scanning and skimming our way through the Internet is messing with our ability to read deeper and longer works.

The article immediately went viral, generating an enormous online conversation, including Twitter and Facebook debates – and even starring in Craig Ferguson’s monologue on CBS’s “Late Late Show.”

But here’s a question for the digital age. Did all those readers actually read the story? Lots of people joked about this on Twitter, with variations of “I skimmed this.”

We decided to find out.

The good folks at Chartbeat, which tracks how people read digital content, performed an analysis and found that 25 percent of readers didn’t even scroll past the headline and photograph to the text of the article.

A smaller percentage of readers dropped off somewhere toward the middle of the story. And 31 percent made it all the way through. (I have a lollipop for that group.)

As the writer, should I be happy about those numbers or deeply, deeply sad? I asked Josh Schwartz, Chartbeat’s chief data scientist. Then I held my breath.

“Anytime I talk to journalists, they always ask that question,”

Schwartz said.

Not an answer. This felt not good.

And then: “Those are very good numbers, though,” he said.

This felt great! But perplexing. If only 31 of every 100 readers made it to the end of my piece, how can that be good?

Schwartz said that, on average, about one-third of news readers never start reading a page after they open it. The worst-ofthe-worst articles see up to 90 percent of visitors saying goodbye without reading.

And here’s the scary, fascinating conclusion: “The fact that the numbers on this story are so good,” Schwartz said, shows “that most people don’t read the article they land on.”

They do what my original story said. They look for key words, and if something excites them, they read. If not, they scamper around.

There is, apparently, a lot of scampering. This is how we deal with the superabundance of information online. The problem I’ve found in my own reading life – like other readers I interviewed – is that I am beginning to read this way with novels and other longer works.

Cognitive neuroscientists are worried about this. I think they are on to something.

Now understand I can only speak from my experience, as I’m sure that Ms. Acosta has.

My grandparents came here just over a hundred years ago.

All four of them came through Ellis Island – stood in lines and registered as immigrants, as was required then. By the way, Sylvia, that is still the basic practice expected today.

that my grandparents told me about. Instead, it was long hours on the job and often for meager amounts of pay. Sound a little familiar?

Ethnic groups lived in close proximity, possibly for safety and the benefit of being able to speak with others in a common language. Yes, Sylvia, there were thousands of these early immigrants back then, millions I’d say.

These new immigrants came to contribute and earn a better life, just as today’s immigrants do. One difference back then – they came here by the immigration process and not illegally. They did not make demands but contributed to building a great U.S. Possibly you have noticed the financial conditions our state is in today? In part, due to demands for more benefits by many thousands

of citizens and immigrants alike.

The land of opportunity has been giving more than it is capable of sustaining.

I see that you are attending Aurora University, possibly with help from a student loan? Sylvia, the student loan money – you ever wonder where those funds come from? I have to wonder myself about that, as broke as we hear our state is.

Sylvia, I wish you all the best.

In my mind, that means all you can earn by your efforts! One last thought.

Students need to pay back their student loans. I have no idea how many others will want a student loan next, and – I have to tell you – we are all out of free money!

Saints go three and out again STCE undone by service errors in its second straight loss

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Habitually glancing at the scoreboard Tuesday confirmed what St. Charles East boys volleyball players already knew.

South Elgin kept tightening things after the Saints eked out a Set 1 victory, responding much like Wheaton North had the night before.

A second-straight three-set loss frustrated East again, especially after the Saints jumped to early leads in Sets 2 and 3. They weren’t just on their toes in the late stages of the Storm’s 20-25, 2520, 25-18 Upstate Eight Conference crossover win.

“We try to get a push from the start and we set goals with points,” Saints senior outside hitter Luke Spicer said.

“Try to be the first one here, first one to the next couple points and then first one there. Just keep building off of that.”

South Elgin (11-2) prevailed in a trio of three-set matches en route to a runner-up finish at Saturday’s Rolling Meadows Invitational.

The Storm extended themselves for this road victory in part because of an adjustment. Late in Set 2, South Elgin began sending the Gibadlo brothers, seniors Chris and Dan, as double blockers against Spicer, who smacked a matchhigh 14 kills.

“He swings well,” said Chris Gibadlo, the Storm’s setter. “He’s a very good player, and he killed us at the beginning and we were able to find a way to stop them and that’s one of the big keys.”

East (8-6) raced to a 13-7 advantage in the second set but was unable to secure the sweep. The Storm benefited from 11 Saints errors or violations in scoring 18 of the last 25 points in the set.

Monday’s nonconference match at Wheaton North brought the same result, albeit in a different fashion.

The Saints scored just 16 points in the middle set against the Falcons after trailing, 20-9.

“Both [Monday] night and tonight were really good games. We played well in both of them,” East senior libero Joseph Leaman said. “Losing in three is not that bad, but we definitely have positives and negatives to work on for practice and St. Francis on Thursday.”

Stability in the back row always has helped East’s attack swing with confidence, and R.J. Yoder, Robert Kudlicki and Kriss Brunovskis each had their moments up front, too.

Still, South Elgin’s resilience added up. Dan Gibadlo (six kills) led a balanced offense and the Storm stayed patient

even as the team traded errors.

The Saints led the third set, 6-3, before the Storm scored six of the next seven points to seize control.

“It’s always nice to get a conference win, even if it’s a crossover,” Chris Gibadlo said. “St. Charles East is a good team; they won their tournament last weekend. So it’s nice to come out and beat a good team.”

North Stars find energy, win in 3

By VINNIE DUBER editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – As the old saying goes, it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.

The St. Charles North boys volleyball team put that on full display Tuesday.

Things didn’t start so well for the North Stars, with serves going into the net and basic mistakes costing them in a first-set loss. But somewhere along the line, things clicked, and North grabbed wins in both the second and third sets to top Bartlett, 18-25, 25-17, 25-15 in an Upstate Eight Conference crossover.

“We had a bunch of things that we did in the first set that were just like, ‘Why would you do that?’ ” North coach Todd Weimer said. “All of a sudden you see the gears start ticking. … I’m really pleased how we made some adjustments. I made some lineup adjustments with some guys, and that helped a little bit, too. And then they just got in a rhythm. I think that’s important to just get streaking and get that ‘W’ in the column.”

Make no mistake, this is not last year’s team, the group that finished third in the state. And Weimer will be the first to admit that. He called North “newbies,” and it’s not a knock on his team, it’s simply a fact.

Where last year might have been buzzer-to-buzzer domination for the senior-laden North Stars, it’s taking the 2014 team a while for things to get going. It’s a big part of why North is just 7-7 after Tuesday’s win.

“We’re back at .500,” Weimer said. “It’s been a very hard, long road. After being so successful last year and graduating all our amazing talent and experience, we’ve got a lot of newbies. We’re still learning the ropes, but that’s part of the game.”

Weimer said he’s still trying to figure out his team, but

Nic Cook St. Charles North volleyball player there’s one thing he knows: His players’ success hinges on their in-game energy. A hallmark of last year’s team, this year’s group needs to find it in order to be successful, according to the North Stars.

Once the energy level was cranked up Tuesday, things got a heck of a lot easier for North.

“Big difference from last season, obviously, but we’re getting there,” North’s Nic Cook said. “We’re working our way. Our practices are getting harder. Coach is pushing us a lot. In that third set, it’s all energy. We start talking, we get better. Our team gets down, we’re not going to do so well. So that third game, we stayed loud, we’re going to come out and play hard.”

Cook had eight kills, second on the team only to Brendan Donlevy, who led the way with 12. Jeff Rollins recorded 34 assists, and Drew Lanz had three aces. Cook also chipped in 13 digs.

It’s clear North isn’t yet firing on all cylinders, but it certainly showed flashes of how good a team it can be in a winning effort Tuesday. The North Stars might only be .500 right now, but it’s not about how you start, it’s how you finish.

Marmion coach Dave Rakow presided over one of the wilder wins of his career Thursday, shaking his head and grinning after the Cadets erased a 12-run, fifth-inning deficit to defeat visiting Guerin, 21-16.

“The Guerin game was like a football game with all the scoring in that one,” Rakow said. “Guerin can hit the ball.

They hit the ball all night no matter who we put on the mound.”

The Gators dented the Cadets’ Michael Stachura in his first start, forcing Rakow to dip into his bullpen in the first inning. The relief corps helped steady the ship while the offense revved up; Brian Simon and Zach Siwiec drove in three runs apiece.

Still, Guerin, like many Marmion opponents this season, stuck around as Cadets pitching struggled with throwing first-pitch strikes.

“I’m excited. I think we’re right on the cusp of being really, really good,” Rakow said. “Until we eliminate the mistakes, though, we’re just going to be average. But it’s a process.

It always is. I’m optimistic, but I’m cautiously optimistic.”

No-no sparks Knights All victories, if not created equal, count just the same in the won-loss ledger. Right?

Kaneland is making a case for getting on the board in grander style, notching its first win of 2014 with Nathan Hopkins’ six-inning no-hitter at Plano on April 9.

“I think it got us going,” said Hopkins, a senior right-hander. “Everybody is getting ready for [this] week.

We’re getting the bats together and the defense is looking good. We’ve got the energy ready for conference.”

While Monday’s winter redux postponed the Knights’ Northern Illinois Big 12 East opener against Rochelle, Kaneland hardly is a stranger to staying patient. The team’s spring break trip to Cincinnati was disrupted by bad weather, eventually whittling the itinerary to just one game.

Consecutive shutout losses – 1-0 to Sandburg and 2-0 to West Chicago – preceded the victory.

Ben Smith’s two-run single in the seventh snapped a 20-inning scoreless streak while also renewing confidence the Saints still can win behind pitching and defense.

“If we can keep teams to one run or no runs a game, we’re going to win some ballgames, which is good,” senior center fielder Brannon Barry said.

Derr, the St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week, caught up with the Chronicle about his achievement. Here’s an edited transcript: What got into you [Saturday]?

It was crazy. It was just crazy to win. It was very exciting to just win the game.

That was all I wanted to do, and of course the last one got us the win.

That’s what my main goal was, and I was just very happy to get that win.

What kind of reaction did you get from your teammates?

They were going crazy. They were very excited for me, as I would be for them. It was awesome. It was a great feeling.

They were all supportive, they joked around with me a little.

It was a great feeling with my team.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you with some tricky homework, who would it be and why?

I’d probably pick Jack McCloughan.

This weekend he went to the robotics thing in Chicago and he was building robots, and he always comes to games talking about science and all the different kinds of things he’s made at home, so I’d probably pick him.

Geneva boys volleyball rallies to win on road

MORRIS – Another complete effort propelled the Kaneland girls soccer team to a 3-0 victory at Morris in its Northern Illinois Big 12 East opener Tuesday.

Courtney Diddell and Holly Collingbourne tallied first-half goals for the Knights, with Michelle Ortiz providing an insurance goal down the stretch of the second half.

“You know what, we’re playing pretty well right now,” Knights coach Scott Parillo said. “We’re able to possess the ball and create opportunities for us to score and limit the opponent’s scoring opportunities.”

Jess Coia, Heather Ortiz and Kiandra Powell each had assists for Kaneland, which improved to 5-1-0 overall. The Knights resume a busy stretch today with a West Aurora Tournament match against East Aurora, and would earn the tourney title with a win.

“It could be a pretty good week for us,” Parillo said.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North girls soccer team withstood a persistent Hersey attack to earn a 1-0 victory on its home field in Pepsi Tournament action.

Playing Hersey for the first time in veteran coach Ruth Vostal’s 14 seasons, North (7-

1-0) made an early goal from Ashlyn Walter stand up. Hanna Durocher had the assist.

“It was tough,” Vostal said. “I thought in the first half we created a lot of chances and then with the field being so wet, the play got a little bit ugly with some players slipping. … It wasn’t real pretty in the second half, but we weathered their storm.”

The Huskies challenged North goalkeeper Shelby Stitz, who made eight saves for the shutout, and had four corner kick opportunities in the closing minutes.

“We had enough people back there, so we were able to keep it off the goal line,” Vostal said.

GENEVA – John Potts and Ryan Doeckel earned a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 1 doubles as part of the Geneva boys tennis team’s 7-0 victory against Larkin in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division match.

boys being able to play with Geneva would create much of a fuss considering lacrosse is not an official IHSA sport and the boys were only competing for the freshman-sophomore team.

But because lacrosse is considered an “emerging” sport in Illinois, it still must abide by IHSA protocols regarding player eligibility, according to Geneva athletic director Jim Kafer.

“Although it was a ‘last minute’ effort, both schools and the IHSA were fine with the set-up so it appeared that we might be able to make this work,” Kafer wrote in an email. “One final hurdle, though, was approval by both athletic conferences that the schools belong to. This is required even though lacrosse is not a conference sport. The Upstate 8 conference denied the request due to concerns over the precedence that it might set.”

The boys played through River City Lacrosse at the youth level, but their River City teammates then split off to play for their respective high school clubs throughout the Tri-Cities.

Anne Shaw said her son, Nick, tried baseball and soccer when he was younger, but those sports did not kindle his passion the way lacrosse eventually did.

But the lacrosse future of Shaw and three of his fellow Kaneland freshmen appear to be a dead end – at least for now – after the families were recently informed the four Kaneland boys no longer could compete as part of a co-op with the Geneva freshman-sophomore boys lacrosse team.

Jacob Sussland, Joe Bittenbinder, Tyler Kraus and Shaw – all Kaneland freshmen – practiced with the Geneva team and competed last week during a loss against St. Charles East. But Shaw said that on Friday, parents were informed by Kaneland – which does not presently have a full-time athletic director – that the boys no longer would be allowed to play.

“It was a sad thing when they told us on Friday that they couldn’t play for Geneva,” Shaw said. “We’re hoping that they change their mind and realize the impact it will make on these boys.”

The parents have since composed a letter to athletic directors in the Upstate Eight Conference asking that they reconsider their stance on the participation of the Kaneland boys.

The letter – sent on behalf of each of the four families – states that the four boys’ lives “revolve around lacrosse.”

“Geneva was gracious enough to agree with Kaneland to co-op, and we had been working on the process, but it got delayed with change in athletic directors at Kaneland. We understand a vote was taken and did not pass for the boys to participate and would like to respectfully ask you to reconsider,” part of the letter reads.

In Nick Shaw’s letter, he writes that “lacrosse is the one sport I feel I am successful at.”

“He’s very thankful the four of us moms are trying to get them to be allowed to play,” Anne Shaw said. “He’s thanked me many times for my efforts. They’re all just saying ‘What are we going to do with our time?’ ”

Shaw savors role as Hawks’ intense goofball VIEWS Tom Musick CHICAGO – Brent Seabrook had no place to hide.

Moments earlier during Tuesday’s practice, Seabrook had leaned forward to receive a pass along the blue line from Blackhawks teammate Duncan Keith. But Seabrook lost his footing as the puck hit his stick, and he tipped and fell like a drunken sailor.

All of Seabrook’s teammates found this to be hilarious, but especially Andrew Shaw. His grin was bigger than Lake Michigan. He slapped his stick against the ice repeatedly, which is the way hockey players clap when they are excited.

Shaw chuckled afterward as he caught his breath in front of his locker. He already had put his stick away, or else he might have slapped it against the carpeted floor.

“Getting on one of your teammates if they fall like that,” Shaw said, “it puts a smile on everyone’s face – even the guy that did fall.”

It was true. Once Seabrook had climbed to his skates and dusted off the assortment of ice chips and embarrassment, he could not help but grin and shake his head.

Make no mistake, the postseason is serious business for Shaw and his teammates. The Hawks have won two Stanley Cup championships in the past four seasons, and they will try to make it three out of five starting with a first-round series against division rival St. Louis Blues.

But it’s possible to be intense and goofy at the same time.

“As long as the intensity is there and the work ethic is there and everyone is focused in, I think you should have as much fun as you can,” Shaw said. “It makes you love the game even more when you’re out there having a good time.”

It has been written in this space before that Shaw, 22, might be the only hockey player in the universe who doesn’t take naps before night games. His enthusiasm is genuine and infectious, and his teammates appreciate his nonstop energy on the ice.

On Tuesday, Shaw cen-

tered a line with Bryan Bickell on his left wing and Patrick Kane on his right wing. He happily yapped at both players in between shifts.

“He’s excited,” Kane said.

“I think we’re all excited to start playing again, especially in the playoffs. He’s a kid that’s going to be working hard. He’s going to be the hardest worker on the ice every night, whether it’s regular season or playoffs. That’s one of the special things about him.”

When Shaw wasn’t busy sprinting down the ice on three-man rushes, he was parked in front of the net as part of the Hawks’ practice power-play unit. He battled hard against teammate Jeremy Morin, who was serving as one of the penalty killers.

After a failed deflection, Shaw gave Morin a playful shove to show his frustration.

Morin grinned and Shaw grinned back, both regrouping for another competition.

“He’s always full of energy,” Morin said. “It’s actually kind of amazing. He never runs out of steam.”

Never. As in, never ever.

For the past couple of weeks, Morin has had Shaw as his roommate on the road, which is sort of like having a 180-pound puppy as a roommate on the road.

the time, and I’m not really a morning guy,” Morin said.

“I’ve learned to just kind of ignore him a little bit when he gets too excited, and he kind of calms down a bit.”

‘Alan Partridge’: You’ll laugh; you’ll squirm

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post Alan Partridge, the callow, obnoxious, stubbornly amusing creation of British comedian Steve Coogan, makes his big-screen debut in “Alan Partridge,” a larky – if sketchily schematic – attempt to see if the self-adoring DJ has the chops to carry his own feature film.

Based on this uneven but occasionally hilarious outing, the jury is still out.

“Alan Partridge” will certainly appeal to die-hard fans of the character, who Coogan created over 20 years ago as a fictional sports reporter on the BBC’s current affairs radio show “On the Hour.”

In “Alan Partridge,” our eponymous antihero is working in a local radio station in Norwich, a steadfastly un-quaint town in England’s Norwalk County. When the station comes under the stewardship of profit-minded corporate overlords, the transition sends the staff into a swivet of anxiety – and, ultimately, an armed standoff, when one of the station’s employees is unceremoniously sacked.

Coogan created Alan Partridge with

Armando Iannucci, best known as the viper-ish wit behind HBO’s fiendishly clever political satire, “Veep.” As with that show – as well as with Iannucci’s scathing Iraq War takedown “In the Loop” – some of the best moments of “Alan Partridge” are found in the tossed off, sotto voce asides that characters deliver almost as afterthoughts.

Here, those take the form of Partridge’s smarmily cruel song introductions (he identifies Fleetwood Mac as “soft rock cocaine enthusiasts”) and a series of escalatingly more inane callin topics, such as “Which is the worst ‘monger’?” or “Things that were better in the old days.”

Known for his singularly antisocial sense of humor, Partridge doesn’t disappoint, running roughshod over religious sensitivities (“Never criticize Muslims,” he scolds his young sidekick, played by Tim Key. “Only Christians. Jews, a little bit.”) and trotting out tired gay jokes. “Alan Partridge” also possesses its share of slapstick, off-color humor. In one of the best gags, Alan delivers a word-perfect disquisition to his assistant, Lynn (Felicity Montagu), on the ospreys he says he’s researching on the computer, while the perfectly formed buttocks of

a female porn star are clearly reflected in his glasses. Later, he manages to make the best of a hoary routine in which he’s caught, quite literally, with his pants down.

Partridge is such a fatuous, superficial figure that the trick is to make him palatable enough to sustain interest for more than an hour. The filmmakers meet with uneven success, putting him into a barely there wisp of a story, but allowing Coogan’s own complicated mix of nastiness and disarming self-awareness to percolate through and carry the day. (Perhaps the world is divided into two types of people: those who prefer Coogan’s Alan Partridge persona, and those who prefer his giddily funny improvisatory explorations with Rob Brydon.)

Once viewers accept “Alan Partridge’s” desultory groaners, they may well come to enjoy its playful, sometimes morbidly funny lunacy. It’s all a question of taste, which Partridge fans know all too well their favorite screwup lacks in all the right places.

• “Alan Partridge” received two out of four stars. The film is rated R and contains language, brief violence and nudity. It runs 90 minutes.

Cellphone snoop discovers boyfriend is cheating Dear Abby: I have been in a long-distance relationship with “Victor” for several years. Recently I began to suspect he was cheating. What raised my suspicion was that I suddenly couldn’t reach him on the weekends. Usually we would Skype – Sunday night for me, Monday morning for him.

Last February when I visited him, I snooped in his phone – spare me the condemnation. I found an email he had written to an old girlfriend in which he suggested they plan their “next” rendezvous.

I plan on dumping him, but I don’t know how to go about it.

I’ve always been bad at dumping people. Should I write him a letter and confess that I snooped? My first inclination is to disconnect completely and say nothing.

I’m afraid to confront him because he is obviously a good liar.

Drooping eyelid is rarely the result of serious problem Dear Doctor K: My right eyelid droops and interferes with my vision. What can I do about this?

Dear Reader: The medical term for a drooping eyelid is “ptosis” (pronounced TOE-sis). In severe cases like yours, the drooping eyelid can cover all or part of the pupil and interfere with vision.

Every part of our body is constantly tugged on by gravity.

And something that is constantly being pulled downward (at least when we are standing or sitting) tends to sag. The eyelid is no exception. The effects of gravity can be exaggerated by any injury that weakens the strength of the eyelid.

What gives the eyelids the strength to open? Tiny muscles that get signals from specific nerves leading to those muscles.

Any injury to the eye can weaken the nerves or muscles involved in opening the eyelids. A common nerve injury is caused by diabetes, for example. Sometimes Botox is to blame. This popular cosmetic procedure to eliminate wrinkles at the brow and forehead can cause temporary eyelid drooping.

Many people tend to develop one or more drooping eyelids as they grow older – without any

Before trying any treatment for a drooping eyelid, you should have a medical exam. This will help identify the underlying cause. Ptosis resulting from disease usually responds to treatment of the disease. If the problem is caused by Botox injections, wait until the injections wear off. This takes about three to four months.

When age-related ptosis interferes with vision, a plastic surgeon usually can correct the problem. He or she will surgically raise your eyelid by removing excess tissue and lifting the lid. This usually can be performed as an outpatient procedure and is done under local anesthesia, which allows the surgeon to adjust the position of your eyelid while your eyes are open. Many health insur-

ers will cover this operation if the ptosis is affecting your vision.

In most people, ptosis develops gradually and is not caused by a serious underlying medical condition. However, when ptosis develops suddenly – over days or weeks – it can be a warning sign of something more serious.

Several serious diseases can affect your eye muscles, nerves to the eyelids or eye socket. For example, ptosis can be one of the first symptoms of myasthenia gravis. This rare disorder affects the ways muscles respond to nerves. Ptosis that comes on suddenly can also result from a stroke, brain tumor or brain aneurysm. This requires immediate medical attention.

Over the years, I’ve seen many people with drooping eyelids. Fortunately, I’ve seen only one that I recall with the sudden development of ptosis caused by a serious underlying condition. So, the likelihood is that your drooping eyelid does not indicate a serious problem.

Parents should be home during party Dr. Wallace: My best friend is turning 16 in a week, so her best friends will be throwing her a sweet 16 birthday party, and I agreed to host this affair. Ten couples will be invited. The party will be on a Saturday night and will start at 8 p.m. and end at 11:30.

Tons of food and soft drinks will be served, but absolutely no drugs or alcohol will be allowed. My parents were good enough to allow me to host the party, but I’m upset by the fact that they insist they will be home for the event.

I’m a good kid and feel I can host this party without my parents peeking in now and then. It makes me feel like they don’t trust me to handle things.

Parents, I wish you would make an extra effort to stress safety when talking to your teens. And please make sure you know where your teens are going and who they are with at all times, and especially warn them about driving carefully and about calling you for a ride if their driver has been drinking. Being a wise parent just might save you a midnight call from a state trooper. The call you never want to hear: “Is this the mother/ father of Jenny Doe? Look at the South hand. West’s opening bid of one heart is followed by two passes. What should South do?

In the second seat, immediately over a one-level opening bid, a single jump overcall in a suit is weak, indicating a respectable six-card suit and some 5-10 high-card points. In the balancing seat, though, the jump overcall becomes intermediate. It shows a decent six-card suit and some 14-16 high-card points – one winner more than a minimum opening bid.

Here, over South’s two-spade bid, presumably West would rebid three hearts, and North would compete with three spades. Then let’s assume that South shrugs his shoulders and bids four spades.

West leads the heart king.

East overtakes with his ace and returns the heart two. West wins, cashes the club ace, and continues with another club.

How should declarer continue?

This deal is easy for someone who remembers the chain of action and inaction during the bidding. East passed over one heart, but has produced the heart ace. He cannot also have the spade king; otherwise, he would have responded.

So South should play a spade to his ace, being relieved when the king comes tumbling down.

Declarer draws the last trump and claims.

Kaneland junior launches Seize the Purple 5K Kaneland High School junior Samantha Havlin will stage a race, the Seize the Purple 5K, to raise awareness for epilepsy.

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla SUGAR GROVE – When Kaneland High School junior Samantha Havlin was looking to do a project through the DECA organization at the school, she said she wanted to try something big.

Havlin, 17, is putting together an event, the Seize the Purple 5K walk and run for Epilepsy, set for 9:30 a.m.

Saturday at Kaneland Harter Middle School, 1601 Esker Drive, Sugar Grove. She said she is understanding how difficult such an event is to create.

“This has been a huge project,” she said. “It’s just a huge thing to put together in general. A lot of organization has been demanded.”

She said beyond the race organization and setup, it has been important to reach out to businesses and have volunteers to help – a group of about 15 people who call themselves “Team Sam,” she said. She said she has had a lot of help.

It’s all worth it, she said, because she believes strongly in the cause of epilepsy awareness. She said she was inspired through her DECA group. On the DECA website, it lists its goal to “prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.”

She said she is close to people at Kaneland who have special needs and epilepsy.

She said she knew she wanted to do something to help with that. She decided to do a running event because, as a member of Kaneland’s cross country and track teams, “running has always been a huge thing in my life.”

She said more than 60 have signed up so far. She said she doesn’t have a target in mind.

“I just always say I want a big enough turnout to make an impact,” she said.

The event benefits the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago. The cost to enter is $30. Registration will be available on the day of the race, starting at 8 a.m. Then, at 8:45 a.m., there will be another part of the event, an Easter egg dash for kids ages 10 and younger.

Havlin said she hopes the Seize the Purple 5K will be held annually. She said she plans to continue it next year and then “pass it down to someone in DECA to take charge of it when I graduate.”
