Residents speak out on wrestling room, art cuts SUGAR GROVE – In the early stages of Monday night’s meeting of Kaneland School District 302’s school board, there was joy and applause for the recognition of Kaneland High School athletes, including members of the wrestling team.

Coach Joe Orosco introduced state meet qualifiers and celebrated the accomplishments of George Strang, Riley Vanik, Colin Gussman and Austin Parks. But the mood turned a bit somber during the public comment portion of the meeting, when several parents spoke about the possible relocation of the wrestling practice area.

It was one of two topics that generated significant public comments at the meeting. Others were upset over a decision to have only one art teacher at the high school next year, as well as reductions in courses offered. The first public comment period of the meeting, which takes place before the board members get into their

Jill Maras, the high school’s principal, spoke first in public comment, explaining some background on both issues. Some in the wrestling community were upset over the possibility that school officials could place new fitness equipment in the current wrestling room. The idea is that it would be available for more physical education students during the day. Maras said it’s possible there would be space created for the wrestling program in the balcony of the east gym, making it into a wrestling room.

One parent, Norma Strang, thanked board members for acknowledging the wrestlers’ feats, but she was not happy with the possible relocation of the wrestling area. She said

requests for some art classes.

Two students, Chucky Liss and Alexis Logan, said they had talked to students who were upset about the cuts. Liss said eighth-grade students often don’t fully understand their options. He said if arts classes were better presented, there would be more interest.

“Art is not a blow-off,” Liss said. “I don’t know if you think that.”

Maras said she was “saddened” a school of Kaneland’s size could have only one art teacher next year.

“We are hoping to understand this trend,” she said, adding a change in the school’s scheduling method might have played a role in the decline in requests for art classes.

“If students want more offerings, I hope they register,” she said.

Air Classics Museum opened Saturday for the season

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Those visiting the Air Classics Museum of Aviation at the Aurora Municipal Airport in Sugar Grove can not only see aviation history, they can hear about it, as well.

“Most people consider us oral historians,” said Air Classics Museum curator Henry Winkler, who is a Vietnam War veteran.

The museum reopened for

the season Saturday. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sunday through Nov. 22. The museum also is available for tours during the week. Winkler said he loves talking about aviation history.

“The best part of my job is meeting the people,” Winkler said.

“This is akin to telling tennis players that they need to practice in the parking lot,” she said.

Another parent, Stephanie Vanik, said practicing in the balcony “is a big step backward.”

“What you can’t replace is the history … the history of this room,” she said.

In an emailed response to a question Tuesday, Maras clarified that “obviously, many additional conversations need to be had so that all are comfortable with any move.”

The art discussion was had a day after one of the high school’s signature arts events – the Kaneland Community Arts Festival. Those who spoke included parents and students and many of the district’s art teachers were in attendance. Maras said student requests drive the high school’s schedule, and she said there had been a reduction in

County ZBA OKs zoning change for former Hideaway

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County Zoning Board of Appeals voted, 6-1, Tuesday in favor of rezoning for the shuttered Al Capone’s Hideaway so it can reemerge as a restaurant bar.

The next step for the petitioner is the Kane County Development Committee Tuesday, April 21 and then the County Board May 12.

More than 50 people packed the hearing and spoke for nearly two hours both for and against the rezoning request.

The Casiello family is proposing a new restaurant, Hideaway 64, 35W335 Riverside Drive, in St. Charles Township.

They sought zoning changes to allow a restaurant with a deck overlooking the river, expanded parking lot and signage, among other changes.

Rezoning was necessary because after the former restaurant closed, it reverted to its original farming zoning.

“We bought the property because we are a family,” Nicholas Casiello said, referring to himself, his wife, two sons and a daughter as the new owners.

“It would be just a really nice family place.”

The family also owns Alley 64 in St. Charles, The Dam Bar in Geneva and another restaurant bar in Palatine, Nicholas

Casiello said.

Although neighbors were concerned about video gambling – among other issues – Jeremy Casiello said gambling would be the smallest part of the business, located in the bar.

Neighbor Charles Bowling said he was bothered by the Hideaway when it was open.

“I live in an un-airconditioned house,” Bowling said.

“I was subject to noise until 10 at night. I don’t like the smell of steak. ... I’m a retired senior citizen living on borrowed money with a reverse mortgage. ... I want to die quiet and peacefully.”

Letters from neighbors read into the record detailed concerns about safety from drivers and impaired patrons as well as its impact on local property values. Critics also did not embrace the Casiello’s business plan to have bouncers – disputing that a family restaurant does not need that level of protection.

Though many residents were concerned with late-night drivers who might be impaired, as well as noise, others, such as Michael Dvorak, were in favor of the rezoning.

“I know these guys are going to do the right thing,” Dvorak said. “I know what type of people they are. Based on their history. It’s going to be all good.

They are going to do it right. I trust them.”

Batavia aldermen recommended changes to city’s liquor code

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen on Tuesday recommended changes to the city’s liquor code that would allow salons and some other businesses to sell alcohol.

Aldermen discussed the issue during Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

The recommendation will go to the full Batavia City Council meeting on Monday.

The city currently allows only restaurants to have a bring-your-own-bottle license.

Aldermen are considering creating a new license for other businesses, as well as one for events.

As proposed, the carry-in event license would be limited to three-hour segments during hours that the business is generally not open or in an area of the business that is not generally open to the public.

of a business, such as a salon or manicurist, alcohol could be sold only in conjunction with the sale of services. Other businesses would need to sell alcohol at a separate counter.

State law prohibits alcohol from being giving away.

“That’s a big issue, not only locally, but all over,” Drendel told aldermen.

In addition, aldermen are looking at expanding the hours for church/club licenses. As proposed, churches and clubs applying for an E-1 license would be able to serve alcohol starting at 6 a.m. for special events, up to four times a year.

He noted the Batavia VFW has had a long tradition of serving alcohol at its herring breakfasts, but that the practice is technically against the law.

“Part of this is education,” Drendel said. “We need to let people know what they need to do to be in compliance with the law.”

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Landon Mosley, a junior at Kaneland High School in Maple Park, said it’s not a secret he is transgender – the student newspaper published an article about him last year – but it also is not something he advertises.

“I have a big fear of being sexually harassed [and] being beat up,” he said.

Mosley is hardly alone. In its most recent biennial National School Climate Survey, the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network found lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth in Illinois regularly hear anti-LGBT remarks and are harassed.

Specifically, 92 percent of students reported hearing “gay” used in a negative way, and 56 percent reported they experienced verbal harassment for their gender expression.

Andy McFarlin, a Kaneland junior who is bisexual, said people have learned they can’t bully him, so they harass his friends instead.

“That’s where it hits me,” he

said.

Paige Hall, a junior at St. Charles North High School in St. Charles, wrote in an email that she is rarely a victim of bullying because of her sexuality, but she has witnessed it. It infuriates her to see the devastating effect the bullying has on her friends, she wrote.

“You can’t go a day without hearing people say ‘that’s gay’ about something,” Hall wrote.

“What they don’t realize is that, by using the word ‘gay’ as an insult, they’re furthering the negative connotation with the word.”

She and Mosley said there is, however, at least one safe haven at their schools: the GayStraight Alliance. The club helped Hall come to the realization and acceptance that she’s bisexual, she wrote, and Mosley described it as a place where you can “just be yourself.”

Kaneland GSA adviser Kristen Dombek wrote in an email she could see the need for the club from the start of her involvement with the group.

Although some GSA members will outright declare their gender or sexual identity, it’s not required, said Marcella Sheler, club adviser at North.

She noted some aren’t yet sure of their sexual identity or what types of relationships they will pursue.

“They’re asking a lot of questions,” she said. “All they know is they want to feel like they belong, and they identify with this particular club for whatever personal reason that they do.”

Sheler, who has been involved with the GSA for eight years, said the club’s focus has evolved over time. It used to focus on controlling its exposure to the community, she said, noting the group once was told not to use rainbows on fliers or announcements.

“For the last few years, we’ve been using rainbows without fear of controversy,” Sheler said.

In 2010, North students addressed the school board about the administration’s handling

of students who wore anti-gay shirts to school. Since that event – which social studies teachers bring up during lessons about free speech – the club’s focus has shifted to finding ways it can get involved in school events, such as homecoming, Relay for Life and suicide prevention week, Sheler said.

At St. Charles East High School, GSA adviser Laurie Nannini wrote in an email that the atmosphere for LGBT students has improved based on what students talk about in the club.

“More and more students in the club talk about how their [teachers] don’t tolerate anti-LGBT language in class,” she wrote. “Some students report that their teacher takes the time to differentiate between gender and sex and explain how it makes them so happy to hear their teachers say things like that.”

In an email to staff members, Sheler told her colleagues they can show their support of LGBT students Thursday by wearing the rainbow stickers she planned to distribute in their mailboxes today. Thursday will be North’s observance of the Day of Silence, a GLSEN-sponsored event that aims to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools. printing craze, Waubonsee Community College’s computer-aided design and drafting – or CADD – program has utilized the technology since the early 2000s. Our students use the college’s three 3-D printers to output their own design projects, which are sometimes used to solve problems for other departments. For example, earlier this year, when Waubonsee’s biology courses needed special test tube holders that also could accommodate a magnet or stand up to a 100-degree water bath, they turned to our CADD program and its 3-D printers. We’ve even used our machines to print prosthetic hands for enablingthefuture.org, which provides them free of charge to children with disabilities.

Waubonsee also has worked with local high schools to get younger students excited about the possibilities of 3-D printing.

Through a dual credit grant, we were recently able to buy desktop 3-D printers for both East and West Aurora high schools to aid their CADD programs.

High school students can put their skills to the

test in a few different ways.

On March 5, Waubonsee hosted the Region 6 drafting competition for the Illinois Drafting Educators Association – or IDEA – in which high school students compete in eight different categories.

And for the first time this year, in partnership with the Valley Education for Employment System, Waubonsee created its own high school CADD competition.

In January, students were asked to design a smartphone desk caddy, and later this month, they will present their individual designs to a panel of judges, made up of Waubonsee instructors and industry representatives.

The winning student will be named the CADD Student of the Year.

So, while the concept and practice of 3-D printing has been around for a while, as the technology advances and the applications grow, interest will continue to increase – which is a very good thing for the future of CADD.

During the past few years, 3-D printing has been the technology buzzword in the news. But, in fact, it’s been around since the 1980s.

So, what is it?

The dictionary defines 3-D printing as a process for making a physical object from a three-dimensional digital model, typically by laying down many successive thin layers of a material.

On a recent TED talk, Joseph Desimone, chancellor’s eminent professor of chemistry at the University of North Carolina, discusses 3-D printing, describing it as “2-D printing over and over again.”

So, how is it done?

We start with a three-dimensional design made with any 3-D software, which we then convert into an “STL file,” or stereolithography, the industry standard for 3-D printing. The STL file is processed through a software called “Slicer” that converts it into a series of thin layers and produces a file tailored to a specific 3-D printer. The 3-D printer uses this file to print the design. Three-dimensional printing has transcended industries and is now starting to transcend materials, with things like ceramics, food, metals and DNA now being output.

CAMPTON HILLS – Wasco Nursery & Garden Center this year is being touted as one of the horticulture industry’s top local garden centers.

The nursery, at 41W781 Route 64, Campton Hills, was named one of Today’s Garden Center magazine’s Revolutionary 100 Garden Centers for 2015, according to a news release.

The Revolutionary 100 program began in 2006 and surveys garden center owners and managers on how they run their businesses, the release states.

The nursery has been a subscriber to the magazine for many years and was invited to participate in the program, said Matt Zerby, Wasco Nursery CEO, in a separate phone interview.

“We are grateful and very humbled to have been selected to the Revolutionary 100,” Zerby wrote in the news release. “To be included with some of the most well-known and well-managed garden centers in the U.S., and in this, our 90th year in business, is truly an honor.”

The nursery, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, will hold a 90th anniversary open house with guest speakers, raffles and more.

The survey took the better part of four or five hours

GENEVA – In a split vote, the Kane County Board on Tuesday denied a liquor license to a woman seeking to turn the Blackjack’s property in St. Charles Township into an upscale gentleman’s club called Thee Doll House.

Following the board’s 17-6 vote, Deborah Diaz said the board also should refuse liquor licenses to such establishments as sports bars.

“You can’t single us out because of our use,” Diaz said, standing outside the County Board room in Geneva.

According to county documents, the current owner of Blackjack’s, an adult entertainment facility at 7N657 Route 25, does not have a liquor license. Board members indicated it lapsed a few years ago.

And two years ago, the County Board voted 11-10 to deny a liquor license for the establishment. Diaz also was involved in that application.

But John Martin, R-Geneva, asked board members how they would vote if such a proposal were in their district. His constituents wouldn’t want it, he said.

T.R. Smith, R-Maple Park, said he, too, would receive calls against such a business.

Deborah Allan, D-Elgin, said she didn’t know if those in her district would go to this club. If a license were approved, she said, her hope is it would become a place people would have respect for.

She voted for it, as did Joseph Haimann, D-Carpentersville; Don Ishmael, D-Aurora; and Kurt Kojzarek, R-Gilberts.

Official urges caution after boat falls over St. Charles dam

Emergency Management Director Don Bryant told the Kane County Board on Tuesday that Fairdale has received a “large amount of donations to the point they’re overloaded.”

What the DeKalb County community really needs is monetary donations, he said.

So, Bryant said, the county has established the Kane County/Fairdale Relief Fund.

Donations will be used to help families in Fairdale recover from the disaster.

Checks, money orders and cash also may be sent to the Kane County Treasurer Fairdale Relief Fund, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva, IL 60134.

“It’s important to help our neighbors,” Bryant said.

The tornado, which struck Fairdale on Thursday, leveled 17 houses to the foundation and left piles of debris everywhere. Two women, both in their 60s, died of injuries they suffered during the storm.

Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the Fox River at about 8:45 p.m. Saturday for the incident, St. Charles police spokeswoman Lisa Blackwell said.

The boat was located near the pedestrian bridge south of the Illinois Street bridge floating upright with the boat’s owner, a St. Charles resident, and his passenger inside, according to a St. Charles police report.

“They were very wet, but they were uninjured,” Schelstreet said.

The boat was able to self-correct after going over the dam and did not capsize, Schelstreet said. The owner and passenger said they were thrown around in the boat during the impact, the police report states.

St. Charles Fire Department personnel tied the boat off to the shore until they were able to tow it with another boat to a lift station off River-

side Avenue, Schelstreet said.

The boat’s owner apologized for inconveniencing the first responders, Schelstreet said.

Schelstreet said southbound travelers on the Fox River should stop when they see buoys warning them of the dam ahead in St. Charles.

Like the dam north of State Street in Geneva, Schelstreet said there is a boil at the bottom of the St. Charles dam.

A 26-year-old Bloomington man who rode in a two-person

kayak April 19, 2014, on the Fox River died after he went over the Geneva dam, the Kane County Coroner’s Office said.

Dinesh Sudhakar-Uckoo became caught in the boil in front of the dam, and his preliminary cause of death was drowning, according to the coroner’s office.

“If the [Stingray] boat had overturned instead of self-corrected, the outcome of that situation could have been tragic,” Schelstreet said.

Sugar Grove TIF proposal meets resistance

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – As Sugar Grove prepares for a public hearing next week on plans for its second tax increment finance district, other taxing bodies are gearing up to oppose it.

The hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Village Hall, 10 S. Municipal Drive.

Residents may speak at the hearing or provide written comments.

The boards of the Sugar Grove Public Library District, Sugar Grove Township and the Sugar Grove Fire Protection District all passed resolutions against the TIF. Kaneland District 302 is neutral, according to board President Cheryl Krauspe.

Village officials and consultants said the tax increment finance district is necessary to encourage development. Opponents said they don’t need a district that will siphon off tax dollars from other public bodies for up to 23 years.

“My point is, [the land] will develop in due time,” said Bill Durrenberger, a member of the Sugar Grove Library Board. “We do not need a massive giveaway of tax dollars.”

But Village President Sean Michels said in today’s environment, developers are seeking assistance.

“Banks don’t lend money like they used to,” Michels

said. “Aurora, Batavia, Montgomery – all these surrounding communities are using TIFs to attract business.

We’re trying to be competitive, and that’s one reason we’re setting up the TIF.” A tax increment finance district – or TIF – is a development tool. A property’s value is frozen when a TIF is created. New revenue from improved property or sales tax will become the tax increments that fund the district’s public improvements. TIFs expire after 23 years.

The village proposes the Northeast Airport TIF District, a 634-acre plan to redevelop an area near the Aurora Municipal Airport for industrial use to bring jobs and boost the tax base.

Municipalities must meet a minimum of two of the eight conditions required to set up a special financing district.

The village’s consultants, Teska and Associates listed three – blight, lack of infrastructure and lack of development by private investment.

The Teska consultants found the area has obsolete platting, deterioration, declining equalized assessed valuation in both the vacant and developed portions of the area, dilapidation, excessive vacancies and inadequate utilities.

Although the area has access to Route 47, Route 30 and Interstate 88 – it has “significant underutilized or vacant property,” according to the

Teska report.

Opponents took particular issue with the requirement that an area be “blighted” to qualify.

“We don’t have any blighted areas,” Durrenburger said. “They are taking tax dollars out of the school and library and putting it in the pockets of developers. This place will develop just fine.”

Michael Fagel, who serves on the fire district and on township boards, said Teska cherry-picked criteria so the area would meet the legal requirement.

“They’re calling it a ‘blighted area’ – two dilapidated barns on farms,” Fagel said. “Sugar Grove is not a blighted area. ... They say the platting is obsolete. That can be fixed easily.”

Fagel also disputed the significance of the dropped property values.

“Hasn’t every home dropped in EAV since 2009-

08?” Fagel asked. “They’re cherry picking elements of the TIF law.”

Michels said he sympathizes with other taxing districts, but he said the village has provided incentives for other development, such as $6 million to extend Galena Boulevard to the west and Municipal Drive to the north, and providing water and sewer.

“We have done other capital improvements for commercial development to help grow the community – at village expense,” Michels said.

“It’s not like development comes at no charge to the village.”

Village Administrator Brent Eichelberger said the consultant, the Village Board and village staff agree the area meets the legal requirement to create the village’s second TIF district. The first, 305 acres, was created in 2012.

For example, the village

gave Jewel a sales tax incentive of up to $1.1 million, Eichelberger said. Without the Jewel, the village would not have the shopping center, McDonald’s or Ace Hardware, Eichelberger said.

“Ace was choosing between four locations to make the numbers work,” he said.

“The development required incentives.”

For Walgreens, the village facilitated and financially participated to get additional land for the drug store to be built, Eichelberger said.

Developing the proposed TIF area for industrial use will bring jobs and more property tax revenue.

“People are not aware that all these significant projects … would happen without the village’s financial participation,” Eichelberger said. “In a perfect world, economic development would happen without any requirement for local participation.”

Clinton already would have lost in Russia

By LEONID BERSHIDSKY Bloomberg News If Hillary Clinton had just announced her candidacy to run for president in Russia, rather than in the U.S., she’d already be in deep trouble – just because of the video she made for the occasion.

To an American, her fastpaced, feel-good YouTube clip might look like a bland and insincere attempt to touch base with all the main voter groups, or a firm promise to look after the interests of the middle class, made in a hip, iPhone-ready format.

Russian election watchdogs, however, would cry foul from the first seconds. “According to Russia’s ‘law’ on ‘elections,’ Hillary would have already been disqualified,” tweeted Leonid Volkov, who ran opposition activist Alexei Navalny’s inspired, but unsuccessful 2013 campaign for election as mayor of Moscow.

Shots of three children, coming in the first three seconds of the video, are all violations of Article 48, Part 6 of Russia’s Federal Law on the Basic Guarantees of the Election- and ReferendumRelated Rights of the Citizens of the Russian Federation. According to this legislation “it is forbidden to involve in election or referendum campaigning such persons as have not attained the age of 18 on the day of the vote, and to use their images and statements in campaign materials.” The only exception made is for families of the candidates themselves.

Russian regulators could have argued – in strict accordance with several different laws – that children need to be protected from the Clinton campaign. At the very least, the video would have been banned and access shut off by Roskomnadzor, Russia’s censorship body for the

Internet. Volkov is probably also right that Clinton would have been disqualified altogether, given her plan to raise $2.5 billion in donations. That would be enough to make her a potential electoral threat to President Vladimir Putin.

Indeed, a number of laws adopted in Russia in recent years are designed specifically to silence Putin’s opponents and make it impossible for them to preach a liberal agenda the way Clinton does in her video.

There is another side to this story, though. If Clinton wins, she will have to deal with Putin, an endeavor in which she has failed before. In 2009, as U.S. secretary of state, she presented her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov with a big red push button with the word “Reset” on it in English and in Russian. Only she got the Russian translation wrong: instead of the correct “perezagruzka,” the inscription said “peregruzka,” or “overload.”

Lavrov and Clinton were able to laugh about it then, but the mistake turned out to be prophetic. Things went downhill quickly and, last year, Clinton likened Putin to Hitler.

It’s partly Clinton’s fault that a video like hers is unimaginable in today’s Russian politics. It was on her watch as secretary of state that Putin finally gave up on the idea of building some kind of alliance with the West: He blamed her department for fomenting the middle class protests that roiled Moscow in 2011-2012. After those fruitless demonstrations, Russia’s rubber-stamp parliament passed dozens of restrictive laws such as the ones I cited above.

Perhaps there was little Clinton could have done to stop Putin from becoming paranoid about Western interference, but at the least she contributed to the U.S. failure to lead by example.

PIRON SAYS BYE, BAI Bulldogs senior hopes breaking ‘very special’ record spurs breakout

By THOMAS KUEBEL editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Batavia boys track and field coach Dennis Piron seems to light up when asked about his former Bulldogs alumni, particularly 2009 400-meter dash state champion Bai Kabba.

You can imagine how proud Piron was, then, when his son, Peyton, broke Kabba’s indoor 400 school record at last month’s Upstate Eight Conference indoor meet.

“It was very special. They have known each other for over a decade,” Dennis Piron said. “There has been one guy, probably, that’s been a better 400-meter runner than Peyton and that’s [Kabba]. There has probably been one other guy; that’s me.”

When Peyton Piron broke the record, he not only put a smile on his face and his father’s, but also Kabba’s. The respect between the two athletes and friends is mutual, and is furthered now that Kabba serves the program as an assistant coach.

Said Kabba: “I think he could have run even faster.

If he had gotten out a little harder, I think he could have blown the record even further out of the books.”

Kabba hasn’t been completely wiped out of the books after Peyton Piron’s 50.14, saying proudly, “the outdoor record [47.49 in 2009], that’s my favorite.”

Piron will try for a state championship – as Kabba did his senior year – but most likely in a different event. The middle-distance specialist will turn his focus to the 300 hurdles during the outdoor season, an event that is difficult to train for since there is no middle distance hurdle race indoors.

Piron also was part of the indoor school record-setting 4x800 relay, while the 400, 200 and all three sprint relays are events he showed potential for indoors and options he will explore this spring.

In regard to Piron’s versatility on the track, Kabba said, “You look at it more as, ‘How does it help your main event?’

In conjunction with that, when it gets late in the year it turns into, ‘How can you best help the team?’ It gives coach

Piron a lot of options in terms of they can score points.”

With the momentum the younger Piron built during indoors for the 400, you can expect him to give that event a few more cracks in the early going. With the well-qualified coaches and mentors surrounding him with valuable advice and experience, knocking down another sentimental record might be on the horizon.

“He will have an opportunity to beat my outdoor quarter mile pretty quickly, probably the first outdoor meet of the year,” said Dennis Piron, who entered outdoors second on Batavia’s top 10 list in the

Peyton Piron is likely to wait until the end of the season to see if college offers emerge, but before college, he has his mind set on a more immediate goal.

“We barely missed sectionals last year, so we are hoping to get the sectional title, too.

It’s been awhile,” Peyton Piron said.

In addition to Piron, the Bulldogs will rely on distance standout Ryan Wieties and jumpers Nick Stuttle, Will Akers and Jay Hunt.

The Bulldogs also will channel the merits of their coach, who has led both the football and boys track teams to dynamic success since Batavia’s new fieldhouse opened in 2011.

To Dennis Piron, that’s no coincidence.

“The fieldhouse has been wonderful for us stepping onto the outdoor season,” he said. “It really has our kids very well prepared, and I’m grateful for what our community did.”

Cheerleaders and football game workers christened St. Charles East’s new track surface in the fall, but now Saints track and field athletes are putting their feet down, too.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Almost 18 years removed from his high school graduation, Aaron Pankoke casually laments his lack of footprints on the then-St. Charles High School track.

“Not near enough,” Pankoke said. “That’s kind of the ironic thing; I never really ran track in high school, but ended up building them.”

To be sure, Pankoke and a crew from St. Charles-based Track Surfaces Company – which he co-owns with his father, Dudley – finished resurfacing St. Charles East’s track in time for the 2014-15 school year.

With the Saints boys and girls track teams not competing until the spring, however, Track Surfaces’ handiwork suddenly feels new again.

“It’s great,” East athletic director Mike Sommerfeld said. “Coaches, they love it. Kids love it. Looks great.

Expanding the track to eight lanes or more – the company has done projects as large as 10, Aaron Pankoke said – would have required a structural overhaul at Norris Stadium.

In August, the five-man crew worked 10-hour days for about two weeks, adhering to what Pankoke called “a very green

process.” The track surface is made of bulk recycled rubber mixed with a polyurethane binder.

Once the rubber base mat was paved, the crew sprayed the familiar red coating, then applied the certified lane stripes.

Track Surfaces also worked on Valparaiso’s track last summer. It also has done several projects with Northern Illinois University.

“Summer season when school is out is really our go time,” Pankoke said. “In the winter, we just kind of do bidding and estimating for jobs. … June through September is really nonstop for us.”

Pankoke graduated from high school about eight years after his family relocated to St. Charles. He said his father has been in the business for 30 years.

“We were trying to slow them down. We knew their outside hitter, No. 15 [Jimmy Farace] is a good hitter and No. seven [Michael Carbonell] is also a great hitter,” Weimer said. “We were always trying to key on No. 15 to dig or block him.”

The North Stars (10-4, 2-0 UEC River) frustrated the Saints’ kill attempts, limiting Farace to three kills and earning 46 digs.

“We’re pretty scrappy,

and I love that,” Weimer said “Forty-six digs in two sets is a good night.”

Drew Lanz had 14 digs to go along with his seven kills.

Libero Trevor Gonzaga made 10 digs while teammates Danny Throop dug eight balls and Bryan Ver- Drew Lanz stat six.

“I think we did a good job of staying calm and focusing on our game, and that’s what let

us win,” Lanz said.

Gonzaga earned a kill on one of his digs in the first set.

His save bounced off his fists, over the net and landed on the floor for a North point.

“I didn’t expect that,” Gonzaga said about the play.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North boys volleyball team may want to consider rearranging its schedule to play only on weekdays.

The squad is undefeated in matches played between Monday and Friday this season.

On Tuesday, the host North Stars defeated crosstown rival St. Charles East, 25-19, 25-18 for their fifth weekday win in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division match.

“I might have to drop all my tournaments and just play during the week,” North coach Todd Weimer said with a laugh. “So far during the week, we are undefeated. All our losses had been on weekends in tournaments. It’s kind of a nice thing for us.”

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – After playing for the Class 3A state championship last season, the St. Charles East girls soccer team knows it has what it takes to get back to that position. But that doesn’t involve looking ahead.

The Saints have had the mindset from Day One to concentrate on the task at hand, and put every focus on winning the game they have in front of them, as was the case Tuesday against Batavia.

Darcy Cunningham had a goal and two assists as the Saints won their 10th straight game to start the season in a 3-0 win over Batavia in a Upstate Eight Conference River Division contest.

“I think the biggest key is just taking it one game at a time,” Cunningham said. “We have a lot of pressure on ourselves because of the success we had last year. We are trying to make sure we don’t look too far ahead and focus on what we need to accomplish next.”

After winning the school’s 600th game in the history of the girls soccer program Monday, the Saints’ win Tuesday was their sixth in the past seven days.

Coach Paul Jennison knows how crucial it has been for East (10-0, 3-0 UEC River) to play as a team and not look past any opponent. Batavia came into Tuesday’s match with a zero in the loss column, as well.

“The girls are all after the same goal,” Jennison said.

“Each girl understands their role, and as a team we are getting better each day. It’s a long season, but we know we play some good competition and cannot get ahead of ourselves.

Today was a very positive result.”

Hannah Kolb opened the scoring off of a give-and-go with Cunningham. Sophie Jendrzejczyk also scored on a header from a Cunningham cross.

Cougars edge Bees for first series win KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BURLINGTON, Iowa – The Kane County Cougars used a comeback effort with two runs in the top of the eighth inning for the team’s first series win. The 4-3 win against the Burlington Bees also created the team’s first winning streak of 2015.

For the second straight day, the Cougars (2-4) took the first lead of the game with a run in the third inning and a run in the fourth.

Marty Herum started off the scoring with an RBI groundout, while Jose Queliz scored on a Burlington error in the fourth for a 2-0 lead.

The Bees (4-2) took the lead after the fifth inning, but the Cougars offense prevailed.

Stryker Trahan’s pitchhit double brought home two runs for a 4-3 Cougars’ lead.

Brent Jones was unable to set the win despite 62⁄3 innings of three-run ball. Bud Jeter’s shutout performance through 1 1⁄ 3 innings helped the reliever earn his first win of the season. Zac Curtis picked up the save after a scoreless ninth.

The Cougars will return home for a three-game series against the Clinton LumberKings, a Seattle Mariners affiliate, beginning at 6:30 p.m. today. Jared Miller (01, 12.00) will take the mound against Clinton’s Daniel Missaki (0-0, 3.00) in the series opener.

Arm-to-arm differences in blood pressure are heart risk Dear Doctor K: At my last checkup, the doctor measured the blood pressure in both of my arms. Why? Dear Reader: Your doctor had an important reason: a big difference between the two readings can indicate an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Researchers at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital helped show the importance of measuring arm-to-arm differences in blood pressure.

The researchers measured blood pressure in both arms in nearly 3,400 adults age 40 or older with no signs of heart disease.

The average arm-to-arm difference was about five points in systolic blood pressure (the top number). About 10 percent of the study participants had differences of 10 or more points. Over the next 13 years, people with arm-to-arm differences of 10 points or more were 38 percent more likely to have a heart attack, stroke or a related problem than those with arm-to-arm differences of fewer than 10 points.

Small differences in blood pressure readings between the right and left arm are normal.

But larger pressure differences may be caused by artery-clogging plaque. Having such plaque in the

If the pressure in one of your arms is higher, that arm should be the one upon which your doctor should base any treatments.

That should also be the arm used to check your blood pressure in the future.

The following diet and lifestyle changes can help you improve your heart health: • Don’t smoke. Talk to your doctor about available resources if you need help to quit.

• Be active. Try to exercise at least 30 minutes a day, most days of the week.

• Aim for a healthy weight. If you are overweight, losing just 5 percent to 10 percent of your starting weight can make a big difference in your blood pressure.

• Enliven your diet. Add fruits and vegetables, whole grains, unsaturated fat and good protein (from beans, nuts, fish and poul-

try). Minimize or avoid processed foods, salt, refined carbohydrates, red meat and sugar-sweetened beverages.

• Drink alcohol in moderation. Limit yourself to one to two drinks a day for men, no more than one a day for women.

• Ease stress. Exercise, meditation, mindfulness and other techniques can ease stress and take a load off the heart and arteries.

One study does not typically change medical practice. Doctors have not yet started to routinely check blood pressure in both arms. Yet, while this study was well done, like most studies it had some limitations that the doctors conducting the study recognize.

What I think prudent is for blood pressure in both arms to be checked in any person who is at higher risk for heart disease and stroke. Such risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, high total cholesterol or LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, smoking, and a parent or sibling who has atherosclerosis of the arteries to the heart and brain.

First, look at only the West hand.

South opens one spade, West makes a takeout double, North jumps to four spades, and everyone passes.

What should West lead?

Note North’s four-spade raise.

With a weak hand, he follows the guidance from the Law of Total Tricks: with 10 combined trumps, bid to the 10-trick level.

West’s best opening lead is not obvious. If he is due to collect tricks with each of his honor cards, he should cash the spade ace, then exit with a diamond. Here, though, that does not work well. To have any chance West must lead a low club.

Then, how should East-West play to defeat four spades?

Many years ago, I was asked: What is the one thing I teach my students that they never seem to get straight and I cannot understand why? This was my answer: Third hand’s playing the bottom of touching honors.

In this deal, when West leads his club two, East must play the jack, not the queen. Then, when South takes the trick with his ace, West knows that East must have the queen (otherwise, South would have won with the queen, not the ace). So, after West gets in with his spade ace, he should lead a second low club. This puts East on play for the fatal heart shift through South’s king-jack into the jaws of West’s ace-queen. The defenders take one spade, two hearts and one club.
