SCHOOLS UP SECURITY School districts use Web-based technology to monitor visitors

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Cheryl Brennan volunteers as a “copy mom” every other week at her son’s school, Geneva Middle School North, making copies for teachers for a few hours.

Last week, for the first time, there was a new security process in place when Brennan arrived for her shift. School staff took Brennan’s driver’s license and ran it through a system that cross-referenced her name in a national database of sex offenders.

“They put it through a little scanning machine,” Brennan said. “They printed out a badge and put it in a lanyard with my photo on it and the reason I was at the school. ... To crosscheck [visitors] against the data bases for sex offenders is a really good idea.”

The office will keep the identification until the visitor leaves. And if potential visitors do not have a government-issued ID, they will not be allowed into the school, officials said.

The middle school is in a district pilot program for the Raptor V-Soft Visitor Management System, a new way to track those who are allowed to come in and to keep unwanted visitors out of school buildings, officials said.

Once they see how the system works, it likely will be established in other schools, officials said.

It is an additional measure in keeping the school secure, said Larry Bidlack, Geneva Middle School North principal.

“I think the feedback we got has been overwhelmingly positive,” Bidlack said. “It went very, very well in our first week here. Some were wondering, ‘Is it really necessary?’ Yes. The vast majority were like, ‘OK.’ ” Geneva School District 304 and other districts use various technologies, security, hall monitors and front-desk gatekeeping to control who comes into their schools, and to know where they are.

Bidlack said. “If we ever had to evacuate, we will know who we have to account for.”

St. Charles District 303, Batavia School District 101 and Kaneland School District 302 use the same system. Their schools scan only the people who are coming into the building, District 303 spokesman Jim Blaney said.

“If somebody is coming in to drop off lunch or meet with the principal, they do not need to be scanned, [so] they are not in contact with students unsupervised,” Blaney said. “We instituted this program a few years [ago]. State law requires to be

able to know any time a sex offender is in the building. A sex offender can be in the building as long as they are supervised.”

The scanning system does not retain visitor information.

It scans only the offender database, Blaney said.

Julie-Ann Fuchs, the Kaneland District 302 assistant superintendent for business, said the visitor management software is among other measures that are part of the district’s security efforts.

“The district takes great measures to ensure that all students are kept safe throughout the school day,” Fuchs said in an email. “All of our doors are locked, so that visitors are only allowed to enter in one entrance for each

of our schools. ... Some of our schools use video monitoring and security staff to also help with visitor management.”

In addition, all staff and students have been instructed to notify administration if they see suspicious-looking people in or around the school, Fuchs said.

At Geneva Middle School North, Brennan said she did not mind the additional time it took to scan her and print out a photo ID. “The whole process took two to three minutes,” Brennan said. “I think it’s a good idea to protect students while visitors are in the school. It’s keeping them safe. I guess anything they do to keep the kids safe is a good measure.”

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Strong winds and dark clouds Saturday did not stop the first helicopter egg drop event at Faith Baptist Mill Creek church.

A red, four-seat light helicopter safely dropped about 2,000 Easter eggs into a fenced-off area west of the church, 1S455 S. Mill Creek Drive near Geneva. Children throughout a crowd of roughly 675 families cheered every time another batch of eggs fell from 35 feet above the ground.

“It was super cool,” said Joanna Hellyer of Yorkville.

“The kids really enjoyed seeing the helicopter come in and drop all the eggs.”

Hellyer came to the event with her two children, two of her nieces and her mother.

This was her family’s first time at an egg hunt with a helicopter and the group’s first time at Faith Baptist Mill Creek.

Grant Diamond, the church’s head pastor, said he ended up meeting several new faces beyond his congregation of about 80 people, including residents from DuPage and DeKalb counties.

The event was held partly to change the perception for younger generations that churches are judgmental places, Diamond said.

“There were lots of new opportunities to share the love of God with people and invite them out to Easter,” Diamond said after the event.

Diamond and the parents admitted they were nervous about the helicopter and weather before the event.

The Easter Bunny emerged from the helicopter and waved to shouting children before the eggs were loaded up. After the bright orange barrier fence was moved several feet south to Main Street, the helicopter took off and circled above the church building before dropping the eggs.

The church put together a good event that had warm weather, said Joe Rodriguez, who walked over from his Mill Creek home with his family to watch the event. Children were able to enter the egg hunt area after the helicopter made the egg drop and landed again.

Rodriguez thought the egg drop and hunt had been well organized. Grant said the day went smoothly because of the help of 40 volunteers, including those who filled eggs, as well as event partners Chickfil-A and the Mill Creek Golf Club.

“We look forward to doing it again next year,” Diamond said.

Petting zoo owner gives up last 2 goats

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A petting zoo owner charged with animal cruelty and neglect last month agreed Monday to give up the last two remaining goats of 94 starved and sick animals impounded by Kane County Animal Control.

At a hearing, Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Danielle Curtiss said they would withdraw a motion to have Elgin resident Stacy Fiebelkorn post $3,555 for the cost of 30 days of care for the two remaining goats, since she had agreed to relinquish them.

Fiebelkorn had given up the rabbits, poultry and all but two goats, and she initially fought to keep all the horses, donkeys, goats, Stacy alpacas and Fiebelkorn llamas. After she failed to post $30,000 cash to pay for their continuing medical care, food and shelter, however, all but the two goats were forfeited – and now those, too, officially are no longer hers.

Nearly all of the animals have been adopted out “to their forever homes” said Robert Sauceda, Kane County’s animal control administrator. That includes the two new owners of the last two goats Fiebelkorn just gave up.

“We have a goat and a billy goat and two horses left, but we’ve got applications for them,” Sauceda said. “We’re moving them along, putting them up on Facebook to get them to their forever homes, soon.”

Sauceda said nearly all were adopted in Kane County, with a few going to DeKalb County. The new owners have taken over the cost of continuing care for the impounded

animals that still are recovering from illness, malnutrition and starvation.

Animal Control has contracts with the animals’ new owners about what they need for their continuing care, he said. Nicole Wessel, a veterinarian who was caring for many of the animals, will give the new owners guidelines on what they need to do, Sauceda said.

“We are excited,” Sauceda said. “It’s been a roller coaster, [but] we see the light at end of the tunnel.”

Also Monday, Kane County Associate Judge Elizabeth Flood approved a request by the Kane County Chronicle to allow cameras in the court-

room for a hearing scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at the branch court, 540 South Randall Road, St. Charles.

That hearing will center on a request by her attorney, Jamie Wombacher, to have the judge order county officials not to talk about the case outside of the courtroom, as her client still faces misdemeanor criminal charges.

Wombacher argued that those comments would jeopardize Fiebelkorn’s right to a fair trial.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Erin Gaeke filed papers in response that such a restriction would violate constitutional free speech rights, and that their comments “are factual and concern the victim animals and are all permitted by the rules regarding trial publicity.”

Randall Road bus shelters part of bigger transit plan

To Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke, the bus shelters installed along Randall Road in recent years represent more than a safe place for riders to wait for a Pace bus.

The structures are part of a broader transit plan that will connect riders along Pace Routes 529 and 801 to such regional destinations as O’Hare Airport, he said.

“We’re putting the pieces into place at the moment,” said Schielke, who represents Kane County on the Pace suburban bus board.

The big-picture plan involves shoulder construction on Interstate 90, Schielke said, but having acceptable pickup points along Randall Road was an important component.

According to a Regional Transportation Authority news release, about $880,000 in grants from the Federal Transit Administration and the RTA’s Innovative, Coordination and Enhancement program funded the 33 bus shelters and concrete pads.

Installation began in fall 2012, according to the RTA, and everything was completed by the end of 2013.

Born: Dec. 28, 1962 Died: April 13, 2014 GENEVA – Sandra L. “Sandy” Davis, 51, of Geneva, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014, at Season’s Hospice in Naperville.

She was born Dec. 28, 1962, in Philadelphia, the daughter of Raymond and Shirley (Carey) Davis.

Sandy graduated from Aurora University with a teaching certificate.

Most recently, Sandy worked as a care technician at Delnor Hospital.

Her true passion was working with dogs and she formed the Dogs Rx Pet Therapy Program at Delnor Hospital, pushing for the animals to visit patients in their rooms. Sandy’s dog, Holly, was a much-loved visitor to the patients at Delnor. Sandy also was an active volunteer and trainer with NBRAN – National Brittany Rescue and Adoption Network. She was a member of several dog rescue and adoption groups and a well-respected trainer. Prior to this work, Sandy was the secretary for the Geneva Fire Department. She also enjoyed line dancing with friends. She found great joy in life and poured her heart into her work with dogs. Sandy will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.

Sandy is survived by her mother, Shirley Davis of Geneva; her sisters, Shirley (Gary) Moline of Geneva, Sharon (Gerry) Gibson of Dwight, Susan (Greg) Hefler of Chillothe and Stephanie (James) Hope of Geneva; and brother, Ray of Geneva; nieces and nephews, Jennifer and Kyle

Lillian adored her family, and loved her life at the lake.

ST. CHARLES – Most aldermen on a city committee were in favor of a proposed east-side pet care facility over the concerns of property owners and residents who live nearby.

The Planning and Development Committee on Monday recommended approving a zoning ordinance amendment and a special-use permit for Fydoland, a pet facility planned for the former Rex’s Cork and Fork, 1317 E. Main St., St. Charles. Second Ward Alderman Arthur Lemke voted against the special-use permit and 4th Ward Alderman Jo Krieger abstained from both votes.

The votes were a disap-

pointment to Barbara Petkus, owner of Royal Oak Terrace Apartments, at 1408 E. Main St. She said Fydoland would bring unwanted dog barking to her tenants.

“It’s definitely going to make it more difficult to rent – that’s the bottom line,” Petkus said after the vote.

Petkus had attorney Kenneth Shepro represent her at the Monday meeting. Shepro said that the Fydoland site is basically a kennel that would otherwise not have been allowed in that part of Main Street without an amendment and special use. He referred to Fydoland co-owner Robin Massey’s application to the city that described the business as a kennel.

Missing scooter returned to child

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – An electric scooter used by an 8-yearold Batavia girl who has spina bifida was returned to the girl Monday morning after being removed from a neighbor’s house Saturday night.

“It was returned, thankfully,” said Shelby Mertes, the mother of 8-year-old Camy, who was born with spina bifida. “It allowed her to have a little bit independence in the neighborhood.

She can keep up with the neighborhood kids.”

The scooter was taken between 8:30 and 9 p.m. Saturday while parked in front of a neighbor’s house. Camy was inside the house playing with her friends, Mertes said.

After the scooter was taken, Mertes contacted Batavia police, and information about the missing scooter was posted on Facebook. On Monday morning, the scooter was returned to the same location.

Mertes said she doesn’t know who might have taken the scooter.

“I’m chalking it up to youthful mischief,” Mertes said. “I do feel the police department was on top of it.

Enough people were talking about it in the community.

We had an outpouring of support.”

At the time the scooter went missing, a basket hanging on the front of the scooter had Camy’s helmet in it, along with some small stuffed animals and other belongings.

All of the belongings still were in the basket, she said.

“It came back in relatively perfect condition,” she said.

MAPLE PARK – Kaneland High School sophomore Andriy McFarlin said he loves the creativity of working with clay.

“Ceramics class was my favorite class last semester,” he said. “I could go and create something rather than copy word to word out of a textbook. I like being able to take something that came directly from the earth and make it into a usable and reusable art piece.”

His ceramic house was one of many student art works on display Sunday at the 15th annual Kaneland Community Fine Arts Festival, produced by the newly named Kaneland Arts Initiative.

The house doubles as a cookie jar.

“The whole idea was to make a Christmas gift for my grandmother,” McFarlin said.

Besides displaying his artwork at the festival, he was selling cancer awareness bracelets to raise money for

money to put together comfort bags for cancer patients to “brighten their day while they are in the hospital,” McFarlin said.

This year, the Geneva-based Changing Children’s Worlds Foundation sponsored an art contest at the festival in participation with the Kaneland Arts Initiative.

The contest generated 35 entries, said Kimberly Svevo-Cianci, the group’s president and executive director.

Peter Jefferson’s ceramic house took first place in the high school category.

“The house represents love for your children because it provides shelter for them,” Jefferson stated in the narrative accompanying the artwork.

Svevo-Cianci said her group tries to help parents better communicate with their kids.

“When parents are communicating more positively with their kids, the kids listen differently,” she said.

“They are more attuned to their children’s feelings.”

Roadway construction on LaFox Road, from Campton Hills Road to North Grand Monde Road, will start April 21 and is expected to last about four months, weather permitting.

The work will include replacing a two box culverts, installing sheet pile along the western side of the road for stability, resurfacing and landscaping.

Construction will be completed in stages and require LaFox Road to be reduced to one lane throughout the project corridor.

Temporary traffic signals will be installed on LaFox Road to maintain traffic through the construction zone for the duration of the project.

North Grand Monde Road will be closed at LaFox Road, and South Grand Monde Road will remain open to traffic.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution while traveling through the work zone, and

drivers are asked to watch for equipment entering and exiting on LaFox Road and expect increased travel times.

Goodbye, tea party

By JENNIFER RUBIN The Washington Post Say what you will about Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, but they know a train wreck when they see it.

Although both supported the shutdown and were heartily supported by tea party groups in their own Senate races, neither has endorsed tea party candidates Matt Bevin in Kentucky, Milton Wolf in Kansas or Chris McDaniel in Mississippi. In fact, Cruz’s office confirms that he hasn’t endorsed anyone in the primaries. He may weigh in after the primaries.

Paul has endorsed two very established Republican candidates: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Ky., and Mike Enzi, Wy. He’s also endorsed Steve Lonegan in New Jersey for a seat neither party thinks is in play, with incumbent Democrat Cory Booker quite secure, and Chris Brannon in North Carolina, the most problematic of his picks.

There are a few important lessons here. First, neither Cruz nor Paul wants to be associated with – or take responsibility for – any tea party wipeouts if it can be avoided. They have to be seen as serious people if they are going to be considered for president. They may say nice things about the tea party generically, but tea party candidates are on their own in elections.

Second, this suggests Bevin, McDaniel and Wolf are so far out there not even the two most conservative senators will endorse them.

And, finally, within Congress and the GOP, there is more unity than the mainstream media portrays as the tea party devolves into

a very fringe group backed

by Washington, D.C.-based money-making operations.

The latter used to be the tail wagging the dog; now these characters are just howling at the moon.

In a political universe in which House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, is stronger than ever and Paul backs McConnell, the establishment has triumphed. While a year or so ago, everyone on the GOP side was a “tea partyer,” I suspect candidates won’t be as anxious to identify as such. Instead, there will be a lot of “constitutional conservatives,” “movement conservatives,” “Reagan conservatives” and “full-spectrum conservatives.” If this continues, the tea party, as many of us saw coming, will fold into the GOP completely, leaving little sign of a distinct movement. That is no surprise.

Historically, insurgent movements take over the party and rout the old team or they assimilate into the greater party. With the demise of some of these fringe campaigns, the big names on the right shying away and the passage of a GOP budget, we are back where the GOP was before the tea party.

There are conservative elements and there are moderate elements in the GOP. There will be disputes on tactics, such as a government shutdown, and disputes on substance, such as immigration reform and gay marriage.

Some may hold views that don’t align with the vast majority of the party, but there won’t be a political organization to support and push their views. And all this will transpire within the same political organization. The big tent is back.

Monday’s St. Charles North boys water polo practice ended with a sequence that’s hardly been seen during the team’s 11-4-1 start.

Thanks to a veteran core pushing the younger players and themselves, there’s not much moving in place here outside of conditioning drills.

“We realize that we can play with some of the more elite teams, but we all have to be there fighting for the team, and we all have to sacrifice for that,” senior goaltender Collin Bawolek said. “But it’s a lot higher and a lot more confident.”

North stayed on track with Saturday’s runner-up finish at the Naperville North tournament. The North Stars’ 12-6 loss to the host Huskies in the title match marked the first time they’ve allowed double-digit goals this season.

It also was the program’s first encounter with a team ranked No. 1 by Illpolo.com.

Narrow victories against Stagg (8-7) and Schaumburg (9-5) braced the now 18th-ranked North Stars for a challenge that could resurface should they meet the Huskies in next month’s postseason.

“We have to absorb their pressure a little bit more,” Bawolek said. “We had a lot of turnovers that game. Just work on holding the ball, playing strong with that and holding our defense.”

Of course, North doesn’t just trap and win in an ultradefensive manner. Junior John Pretet (eight goals) and senior Nick Traxler (five goals, five assists) paced the attack during the tournament, with Pretet operating in the hole near the front of the goal and Traxler driving in from the perimeter.

The usual suspects struck in the program’s first victory Thursday against perennial power Neuqua Valley, although contributions from

Until last week, the only person in North’s huddles who had defeated the Wildcats was coach Chris Cloy, then a student-athlete at Sandburg.

“We put a lot of emotion into it and everyone got up and ready to go,” said Traxler, who scored twice in the final 4:10 to snap a late tie.

Last month, Bawolek claimed a personal milestone by recording his first career shutout in a 15-0 rout of visiting Hinsdale South. The

team’s full-time goalie since 2013, Bawolek flirted with the feat last season before yielding a goal in the final quarter.

After “learning the ropes from the upperclassmen” as a freshman and sophomore, Bawolek, a longtime swimmer who was part of North’s 10th-place 200-yard freestyle relay at the state meet, hunkered down.

more than he fathomed.

“I feel like I just combined the two and it worked out,” Bawolek said.

Along with Bawolek, Steele and Traxler, North starts a fourth senior in Ross Davis, another swimming veteran. Classmates Raphael Jabbar and Raheem Khan are reserves.

Cloy, in his sixth season, calls this crop of seniors among the most dedicated he’s guided at North. Keep going, and the superlatives could keep flying.

The program is after its first state tournament berth, too, as the North Stars await next week’s postseason seedings.

“Kids are working really hard,” Cloy said. “They’re listening to what we’re asking them to do and they’re able to see some of the payoff in some of the games that we’ve been having, so it’s been exciting.”

A 1,030-mile road trip from Geneva to Bowling Green (Ky.) to Dayton (Ohio) to Geneva figures to acquaint the Cougars with the midwest on their longest bus ride of the season.

There might have been a better time than the present for the six-game sojourn that began Monday, however.

Players had just started to grow acclimated to their new surroundings by the end of a 4-2 homestand against Fort Wayne and Lake County.

“They’re settled in to their host families, and I think almost all of them have rides and vehicles, which makes for an easier transition, you know,” manager Mark Johnson said. “It’s difficult when you’re always relying on people for rides and don’t know where you’re staying and things like that.

“I think they’re getting settled in and they’re a pretty close-knit group as far as a team. That’s fun to

NOTEWORTHY Bats awakening for Knights The way Kaneland coach Brian Willis figured, it was only a matter of time before the Knights’ offense erupted.

Saturday’s doubleheader against visiting Batavia turned out to be the day as the Knights won both games via the mercy rule in five innings, 12-2 and 19-5.

“It was nice to kind of bust out of our funk we’ve been in with the bats,” Willis said. “I could see it coming a little bit against Marengo on Friday. … It was going to happen against somebody. Unfortunately for Batavia, we started swinging well against them.”

The doubleheader sweep improved Kaneland to 6-5 on the season. Freshman Morgan Weber reached base in eight of her nine at-bats, scoring six runs on the day.

While Weber’s emergence gives Willis an intriguing option at or near the top of the lineup, the Knights’ teamwide resurgence was a relief for Willis after a chilly offensive start to the spring.

“When you get into those situations, people start to press, and then we started having everyone pressing at the same time,” Willis said.

“Everyone was trying to hit that five-run homer, and it just doesn’t exist. I knew it was a matter of time.”

A prolonged offensive uptick would undoubtedly pay big dividends for Kaneland, but the Knights’ season also could receive a boost when ace pitcher Angie Morrow takes on a larger workload. With Morrow coming off a shoulder injury last season, Willis has been reluctant to start Morrow in consecutive games.

“It’s too early in the season,” Willis said. “Even though she says she can do it, I want to be extra cautious with her. It’s more important down the road than it is today with these kind of conditions.”

Morrow is a transfer from Burlington Central. Kaneland’s early-season matchup with Burlington Central was postponed because of field conditions. Willis said Monday he doubts the game will be made up, saying fitting in conference games will take precedence.

Long view St. Charles North is coming off an up-and-down week, having lost consecutive games to Neuqua Valley and Waubonsie Valley, defeated Wheaton Warrenville South and South Elgin, then

dropped a pair of games Saturday to Lockport and New Trier in a round-robin event.

North still projects to have a strong season, and coach Tom Poulin said he doesn’t mind some in-season adversity as long as there is long-term payoff.

“The whole regular season is getting us ready for the postseason,” Poulin said after the loss to Waubonsie. “So if these days make us better going forward, then it’s worthwhile.”

Marengo’s school board voted unanimously Monday night to leave the Big Northern Conference and join the new Kishwaukee River Conference in 2016.

Burlington Central, Woodstock, and Woodstock North have committed to join the conference.

The four schools met, along with Harvard, met Friday about the matter.

The schools have to give the BNC two years’ notice to leave but, if the BNC votes unanimously to allow them to leave early, the KRC could begin play in the fall of 2015.

While there is no item on the agenda at Wednesday’s Harvard school board meeting, Marengo superintendent Dan Bertrand said that Harvard will discuss the matter then.

Since it is not on the agenda, Harvard cannot vote on the matter.

Genoa-Kingston, Johnsburg and Richmond-Burton, also current members of the BNC East that have been involved in discussion of the new conference, were not at Friday’s meeting.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North boys lacrosse team didn’t have success during its spring break to St. Louis, nor did the North Stars have any last week with a loss April 8 to Neuqua Valley and then a double overtime loss Thursday to Glenbard West.

A Saturday afternoon game against Geneva at the East Side Sports Complex was apparently exactly what the North Stars needed as they rolled past the Vikings, 12-7.

“After what we did today, I think we know now we can win,” North Stars senior Zach Behrens said. “We can get a lot of goals in and hopefully we can now carry the momentum from this game for the rest of the season.”

Behrens, a Carthage College recruit, paced the North Stars with four goals.

“It’s really important to get the team rolling by coming out strong, and that’s what we did,” he said. “Once we got a few goals we knew we could continue to do it the rest of the game, and even when you stop scoring for a while, you’ve got

momentum and a lead.”

North (2-5 overall, 2-2 in Illinois) extended its lead to 10-5 after three quarters and never let the Vikings rally.

“We made some little mistakes here and there which hurt us in the end,” Vikings coach Derek Bahler said. “We were fighting hard the whole time and the effort was there, but we made too many costly turnovers and had too many failed clears.”

Seniors Brandon Heimbuch and Sam James led the Vikings with a pair of goals apiece while Grayson Frazier added six ground balls.

“We’ve got 23 new guys to the varsity this year so we’re still trying to rebuild for success,” Bahler said. “We’re hoping to take this season as it goes and get better and finish strong.”

Senior Jud Huxtable added three goals for the North Stars while junior Dean McBride scored twice.

“We had two or three guys creating shots and when you have that many stud offensive players it makes a difference,” Huxtable said. “If we can keep the scoring going, it’s going to be good for us.”

It is called “The Uncle Wiggily Game.” I have the board, the pieces and the box. The board shows a map with numbered spaces, houses, trees, a rabbit (probably Uncle Wiggily) and other animals. A: Uncle Wiggily was a rabbit character created in 1910 for a daily series of bedtime stories. The game was introadno=0266790

duced by Milton Bradley in 1916. In 1967 rights to the game went to Parker Brothers, which sold it until about 1971. All of the published versions of the game were similar. Elderly Uncle Wiggily, who wore a top hat, was searching for medicine for his rheumatism. The board for the 1967 game pictures a “2 & 3 Cent Store.”

Others have a “5 & 10 Cent store.” The game board also changed in 1923, 1949, 1955 and 1961. The rabbits were made of a composition material in early sets.

From 1947 to 1953, they were made of metal. In 1988, Milton Bradley and Parker Brothers made different versions of the game. The Bradley version was a simpler, shorter game with 100 spaces instead of the original 151 spaces. There is a new game today, by Winning Moves, that has a vintage look. Most Uncle Wiggily games sell for under $30.

A: Leonard Silk Co. was a manufacturer of thread based in Warehouse Point, Conn. It started out as J.N. Leonard & Co. in the 1860s and became the John N. Leonard Silk Co. in 1891. In 1869 John Leonard invented a revolving display cabinet with wire rods to hold spools. He

made spool labels with “ornamentally perforated” holes so they could fit over the rods and leave the printed labels intact. Leonard sold his interest in the company in about 1909 and its name was changed to Warehouse Point Silk Co. Spool cabinets were used by salesmen and dry goods stores to display spools of thread. Your spool cabinet was made between 1891 and 1909. A: Collector plates made in limited numbers were a huge collecting niche in the 1970s and ‘80s. Johnny Depp is a prince among actors – a solid performer, unafraid to take on risky parts, friendly to his fans, accommodating to journalists.

Well, accommodating if you can get to him. At last week’s press gathering for his new film “Transcendence” at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, more than 100 feature writers requested some one-on-one time with him.

Alas, he was only there for a few hours, and most of us – myself included – had to make do with the hopes of getting a couple of questions in when the microphone was handed to us at a crowded press conference.

In the smartly written science fiction thriller “Transcendence,” Depp plays Dr. Will Caster, a brilliant artificial intelligence researcher who, after an attempt is made on his life by anti-technology terrorists, has his mind melded into the Internet. Complications ensue.

I had two questions for Depp. Being a science fiction buff myself, I wanted his memories of which SF films knocked him out as a kid. I also knew that Wally Pfister, former cinematographer and now first-time director of “Transcendence,” shot a video for Paul McCartney’s lilting song “My Valentine” a couple of years ago, which featured Depp hand-signing to McCartney’s singing and string-syncing one of the coolest acoustic guitars I’d ever seen. I wanted to own one of them. My (non-film-related) second question would be about the make and model of the instrument.

Alas, the press conference ended early; I was never handed the microphone. But as Depp was headed for the

Me: “Johnny, what was that amazing guitar you were playing in the ‘My Valentine’ video?”

Depp: “Oh, right, yeah, that’s a beautiful old guitar.

It actually has two f-holes on the back.”

Me: “Who makes the guitar? I want to buy one.”

Then his handlers pulled him out of the interview room. My question was asked, but catching him off guard, I got only a quasi, unsure answer in return. Hey, a good try.

I went off to do other interviews, wrote a review of the film and, about four hours later, headed to the hotel’s business center, where I Googled “Unitone guitars,” but came up with nothing.

Again, a good try, but you’ve got to know when to give up. I signed off, gathered up my papers, opened the door, walked

out ... and bumped right into Depp as he was passing by, still surrounded by handlers, on the way to one last interview of the day.

He recognized me and let out a genuine, “Hi, how are you doing?”

Me, walking with him: “Great, but I couldn’t find anything called a Unitone guitar. Do you think it might have been another name?”

Depp (eyes closed tight): “Umm, umm, I can see it, but I just can’t remember.

Are you staying here at the hotel?”

Me: “Yeah.”

Depp: “Will you be here tomorrow?”

Me: “Yeah, but I’m leaving pretty early, probably before you’re up.”

Depp: “Do you have a card? I’ll call home tomorrow and find out the name, then I’ll get it to you.”

Me (reaching for one of my cards): “Oh, that would be very cool!”

While I was doing that, he closed his eyes even tighter, reaching deeper, thinking to himself, “What is that name?” Then he opened his eyes wide. He had it.

Depp: “Vivitone! It’s definitely a Vivitone!”

Me: “Great! Thanks! Isn’t it funny how the mind works?

Just like the mind stuff that was going on in the movie.

Oh, I really enjoyed the movie.”

Depp: “Thank you. I hope you find one of those guitars.

It shouldn’t be too much trouble. I’m glad you dug the movie.”

Then his handlers pulled him into the interview room.

Signs of an abuser apply to women as well as men Dear Abby: I read your Jan. 8 column about the warning signs of an abuser. Would you use your influence to say that men are also victims of abuse?

My son was in a three-year relationship with a woman who scored 15 out of 15 on your list. We knew it was a toxic relationship, but he couldn’t see that.

The night he came to us for help, battered and bloody, I finally took a stand. It took six months to get her out of his life. My son was ashamed to be a battered man, and she had told him that men who call 911 go to jail. It kept him from calling.

Please, Abby, help to change that. If you use this, please keep me anonymous. He thinks I’m an “interfering mom,” but at least he’s not being abused anymore. Parents should talk to their kids early about cyberbullying Dear Doctor K: My daughter will be starting middle school this year. How can I protect her from cyberbullying?

Dear Reader: Bullying can be particularly difficult during middle and high school, when popularity and peer acceptance feel like the most important parts of life. Adding technology to the mix makes it worse still.

Cyberbullying is not simply bullying that takes place through electronic means. There are two unique problems with bullying through text messages or social media. First, if the bully keeps quiet about it, the bullying can be invisible to others. Just your child and the bully know about it. And if your child has trouble talking to you about it, no one else will know – not teachers, school counselors or your child’s friends.

Second is the opposite problem made possible by modern technology: The bully can hurt your child by spreading false and hurtful stories very easily to large numbers of people, including most of your child’s classmates.

Once something is out in cyberspace, it’s very hard to control it.

For these reasons, cyberbullying can be particularly damaging.

It’s not easy to prevent cyberbullying. Probably the most important thing parents can do is talk to their children about what they do, see and experience online. Start these conversations early – as soon as your child starts using the Internet or a cellphone.

Your child may not come to you if she experiences cyberbullying. For clues that it might be going on, watch for changes in behavior. Ask lots of questions if you notice this occurring.

If she does encounter any cyberbullying, report it. Some of it could be illegal and should be reported to the police. This includes threats or sexually explicit content.

Even if it’s not illegal, all cyberbullying should be called out.

After years of neglect, the problem of school bullying is being taken increasingly seriously. Ask your school’s advice about who the best person to help would be.

It may be a guidance counselor,

or the parent of the bully.

There are two sides to cyberbullying, and you should also talk to your daughter about not becoming a cyberbully herself.

Let her know that comments and posts, even offhand ones, can make people feel bad.

Tell her that bystanders also play an important role. Some kinds of bullying, particularly cyberbullying that involves widespread distribution of hurtful information, involve the actions of a group. Help your daughter understand that she will become part of the bullying if she passes on hurtful comments, or laughs at – or talks about – the victim.

But if she refuses to participate, stands up to the bully and stands up for the victim, she can help make things better.

By being mindful of behaviors that indicate your daughter is bothered by something, and by gently inquiring, you may be able to detect bullying and work with your daughter to do something about it.

She was my first true love, and I really thought she had deep feelings for me, too. Well, I guess I was wrong. During the spring break she went to a cousin’s wedding and met a guy from another school. She broke up with me and told me it was “love at first sight” for her and Andrew, and that he had broken up with his girlfriend to go with her.

I was completely caught by surprise when she broke up with me, and I began to feel really depressed. I started attending church regularly and met Emily at a church party. We really hit it off and we have been seeing each other over a month. I have wonderful times when I’m with her, and she makes me completely forget about Rachel.

Out of the blue, Rachel called me up last night and wanted to get back together because she and Andrew had broken up. She said she really loves me and had made a huge mistake breaking up with me. I told her I’d think about it. Now I’m all confused.

In this balancing seat, the meanings for three of South’s bids change. The first is a oneno-trump overcall. It is no longer strong. Now it is weak, showing 11 to an unappealing 15 points.

North then wisely passes, leaving South in one no-trump.

How should he plan the play after West leads his fourth-highest club and East puts up the jack?

Note that with a strong no-trump, South would double first and hope to rebid one no-trump on the next round (if an eight-card major-suit fit was not revealed). Here, that would be easy.
