Former Hideaway property faces zoning hurdle

CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A zoning hurdle faces the Casiello family as it works to turn the former Al Capone’s Hideaway and Steakhouse property into a family restaurant with more affordable prices. Jeremy Casiello acknowledged the process has been frustrating, but Kane County staff members have “bent over backwards” to help.

“They’re doing everything they can to help us out with it,” Casiello said.

Mark VanKerkhoff, director of the Kane County Development and Community Services Department, said the required zoning change stems from the village of Valley View’s dissolution in the 1980s.

At that time, he said, every property in the village was placed in the county’s F-zone – or farming – district, making the Hideaway a nonconforming use that was grandfathered in. The property – which is at 35W337 Riverside Drive in St. Charles Township – lost its nonconforming status when it closed in 2012, meaning the zoning must change for it to reopen as a restaurant and bar, VanKerkhoff said.

The Kane County Zoning Board of Appeals is expected to consider the matter at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Building A of the Kane County Government Center in Geneva.

Casiello said his family is encouraged by the response so far by residents and county staff, who allowed the family to proceed with interior renovations before securing the new zoning.

“We’re looking forward to reopening this place,” Casiello said, noting his family wants to make it a family-friendly restaurant that diners can afford throughout the week instead of just on special occasions.

Some residents, however, are concerned about how the planned restaurant might affect their community. Tony Moretti said the group – collectively known as Citizens

Concerned about Hideaway 64 – is worried about increased litter and traffic, as well as the possibility of video gaming and what it could do to home values.

Casiello said his family understands not everyone will be happy with the plans for the property, but many of the residents have had positive responses. As for video gaming, he said, his family is “definitely considering” it, and he doesn’t foresee problems with it.

“The county has no control over that,” VanKerkhoff said, noting one of the state’s requirements is that applicants have a local liquor license.

Should the Zoning Board of Appeals make a recommendation on the application today, it then would proceed to the County Development Committee meeting set for 10:30 a.m.

D-304 considers slightly reduced tech plan

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva District 304 school board members will be considering a technology plan for the 201516 school year reduced to $997,000, down from nearly $1.3 million as presented last month.

Technology Director Elizabeth Janowiak presented a scaled back districtwide plan

Monday, reduced spending by $251,000.

Remaining in the plan is increased wireless coverage and portable devices for 480 sixth graders – whittled down to $550 apiece from $600.

Cut from the plan is replacing the Mack Olson gym sound system and expanding security cameras, Janowiak said.

“We’re going to delay upgrading the sound system

and make do for another year,” Janowiak said.

Still included in the plan is expanding the Wi-Fi network and increased connectivity.

“We need to continue expanded wireless throughout the district,” Janowiak said.

“Wireless devices will not serve the purpose if we do not have Internet connectivity for them.”

Janowiak said the plan includes expanding Wi-Fi to

the athletic fields at the middle schools, just as they are available at the high school athletic fields.

The district’s system also will need an upgrade as it still has a 2003 Windows Operating System, which will not have support beyond July, she said.

Instead of additional devices for the district’s fourth graders, Janowiak said they would pull together the dis-

trict’s inventory to create classroom sets.

Still at issue is whether it is better for the district to lease equipment for the sixth grade laptops or buy them outright. Janowiak said leasing costs less, but then the district has to give the equipment back after three years.

Board President Mark Grosso said the board would take action at its April 27 meeting.

The Quad St. Charles continues work toward 2016 opening

Daniel Krausz of The Krausz Companies gave an

update Monday on the mall’s redevelopment into The Quad St. Charles to the Planning and Development Committee during its meeting.

The Quad St. Charles target opening is still 2016, Krausz said.

“I’m afraid it’s going to get loud again soon,” he said, re-

ferring to outside construction taking place on the mall property.

The Krausz Companies Inc. bought the mall, at 3800 E. Main St., St. Charles, in November 2013 for more than $9.5 million. A formal groundbreaking at the site was in September 2014.

Krausz hinted at progress signing up tenants but said specific announcements will be made at a later date. In the meantime, company representatives plan on meeting in May with 50 new retail mall tenants at the International Council of Shopping Centers RECon, a global retail real estate con-

vention held in Las Vegas.

There also has been high interest in the outlot spaces on the mall property directly north of Main Street, Krausz said. The prospective clients for those spaces appear to be restaurants, but Krausz again declined to disclose specific names at this time.

COVER STORY ‘TREATMENTS HAVE ESCALATED’ New technology can help detect cancers in dense breast tissue

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – All breasts are not the same. Some 40 percent of women have what doctors call dense breast tissue, and an additional 10 percent have very dense breasts – and a greater risk of developing breast cancer, a local doctor said.

And for these women, a standard X-ray mammogram might not do a good enough job of identifying abnormalities that could be breast cancer, said Dr. Sharmishtha Jayachandran, medical director of the Breast Health Center at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital.

The hospital now has automated breast ultrasound technology – called ABUS – which is almost 90 percent accurate in screening for cancer in dense breasts, Jayachandran said. Delnor is the only hospital in the area with this new technology.

It uses sound waves to create 3-D pictures of breast tissue, while traditional mammography uses radiation.

And because it is computerized, the human error factor in capturing images is removed, Jayachandran said.

“We are looking for change from year to year, [so] we do a screening mammogram every year … starting at age 40,” Jayachandran said. “You want to catch the disease early, so we can cure it. Treatments have escalated. If you catch it early, it is almost completely curable.

The key is to catch it early.”

Dense breast tissue shows up white in a black-andwhite mammogram images, making it more difficult to differentiate normal tissue from tumors and other abnormalities that also show up white, she said.

“We can see all this white that comes in,” Jayachandran said, gesturing

What you are trying to look for is a snowball in a snowstorm. The sensitivity here off a 2-D mammogram in a heterogeneously dense breast is 70 percent. Adding the 3-D, it bumps it up to 80 percent.”

Better screening for breast cancer has come in stages, Jayachandran said.

The hospital got its first 3-D tomography mammogram machine last year and screened almost 10,000 women. It found 96 cancers – 10 were because of 3-D technology that were not seen on regular digital technology Jayachandran said.

“We would have missed those 10 cancers,” Jayachandran said. “Sensitivity of digital mammogram alone on this type of breast drops down to 40 percent.”

Studies showed traditional mammograms found five cancers per 1,000 women screened, but then found seven when using ultrasound.

“Even if it’s only two additional cancers, it matters,” Jayachandran said. “Ultrasound has no radiation. It’s sound waves. It’s a little more comfortable for the patient because you’re lying on your back, not standing and getting the breast squeezed between two plates.”

Even though 3-D technology brought accuracy up from

70 percent to 80 percent for dense breasts, Jayachandran said something more was needed – and that is where the automated breast ultrasound technology comes in.

“They have to scan the whole breast in one plane and then go and scan it in another plane,” she said. “It takes almost an hour to scan both breasts. And because you’re looking carefully, you’re trying to find little cancers. ... Is it a cyst or a mass?”

Jayachandran said the automated ultrasound technology removes human error from the scan, no longer depending on technologists to capture every plane of the breast.

“It has a membrane that

captures the entire breast … in 15 minutes with a data set of more than 1,000 images … of both breasts that I can review,” Jayachandran said.

Jayachandran said she saw the cancer detection rate go up in clinical trials across the country for automated breast ultrasound technology, so she advocated to bring it here.

Only one patient has used it so far, but Jayachandran said she personally is reaching out to referring doctors so they know of the new technology available for their patients.

“Nobody tells me to go,” Jayachandran said. “I do this because I care. I live in this community.”

Local housing market continues to improve Data showing upbeat housing market

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com The Tri-Cities housing market continues to improve overall, according to new data released by the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors.

In Geneva, 443 detached single-family homes were sold traditionally in February, up from 439 sold during that time in 2014, according to the data.

Traditional home sales mean homes were not real estate-owned or short sales.

Traditional median home sale prices increased in Geneva, up from $312,000 in February 2014 to $322,500 in February 2015.

The number of detached single-family homes sold traditionally in St. Charles fell slightly to 715 in February 2015, down from 736 sold in February

2014. Median home sale prices of those types of homes also dropped from $302,750 in February 2014 to $295,000 in February 2015.

Traditional sales of detached single-family homes in Batavia increased slightly from 310 in February 2014 to 312 in February 2015. But median home prices for detached single-family homes in Batavia decreased from $267,5000 in February 2014 to $259,540 in February 2015.

At the same time, there have been fewer short sales than in the past. For example, the number of short sales of detached single-family homes in St. Charles dropped from 84 in February 2014 to 43 in February 2015. Debora McKay, a broker at Coldwell Baker in St. Charles, said she was pleased with the data results.

“It’s been a really good start to the year. It’s much improved over the last year. Hopefully, the year will continue at this pace.”

McKay said she is optimistic the trend will continue. She attributed the uptick to the economy continuing to improve.

Deadline for art competition nearing AURORA – U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, announced the 11th District’s Congressional Art Competition, a contest for high school students.

David “Dave” Lamb, age 59, of Elburn, passed away after a long courageously fought battle in the early morning hours of April 12, 2015, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family.

He was born September 28, 1955, in Lakewood, OH, the son of Edward and Norma (Nordestgaard) Lamb.

Fire causes $3,200 in damage to home

Geneva woman makes court appearance in foiled Canadian shooting plot case

GENEVA – The Geneva woman charged in a foiled Valentine’s Day shooting plot made a brief appearance in a Canadian courtroom last week.

Lindsay K. Souvannarath, 23, last appeared in court in early March.

She and a 20-year-old Canadian man, Randall S. Shepherd, Lindsay K. h a v e b e e n Souvannarath charged with conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit arson, conspiracy to use weapons for a dangerous purpose and unlawfully conveying threats through social media.

The charges stemmed from a foiled Feb. 14 plot to kill cit-

izens at the Halifax Shopping Centre, authorities have said.

Friday’s court appearance included discussion about how long the preliminary hearing would take, Chris Hansen, the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service communications director, wrote in an email.

Hansen noted they are returning to court Thursday to set dates, and the defense is waiting for more disclosure.

Their arrest stemmed from a Crime Stoppers tip that originated in Canada, Canadian authorities have said. The tip reportedly suggested Souvannarath and a 19-year-old – who was found dead at a Canadian residence – had access to firearms and intended to go to public venue with the goal of opening fire to kill citizens before killing themselves.

Although Souvannarath is from Geneva, Geneva police have said there is no threat here.

By Gina Kraman It happened in Chattanooga, about 10 hours from home, with a pregnant wife in the car. Seith Swanson, mechanic and manager, Geneva Repair Shop, was driving home from a Florida vacation, when he heard a noise that he knew immediately was his Chevy Tahoe’s air-conditioner’s air compressor breaking. It meant he had to pull over soon to minimize damage from an over-heating engine.

“My choices were to pull over to the side of the highway and wait for a tow truck, or try to creep slowly along to the next exit. Luckily, there was a car dealership and hotel right off the exit,” Swanson recalls. Settling his wife in the hotel, Swanson rented a car to drive to the next town for the needed parts. Since he usually travels with tools, he had the necessary equipment to repair his car, and was able to

continue home the next day.

Swanson cautions, however, that sometimes the best advice is to pull over and wait for help. “Depending on the problem, driving a disabled car can worsen the problem. For example, driving more than 500 yards with a flat tire could destroy and rim.”

Sometimes the breakdown is so severe, that driving further is not an option.

SUGAR GROVE – A few dozen Waubonsee Community College students on Saturday fanned out across the campus and Aurora in the name of service.

WCC’s Day of Service took three groups of students – identifiable in bright orange T-shirts with the phrases “Give a hand” and “Volunteer WCC” on the front and back – to the Kiwanis Club of Aurora, Mutual Ground and Rebuild Aurora Together.

Another group also remained on the Sugar Grove campus to tidy the grounds.

Second-year student Elizabeth Thompson of St. Charles was part of a trio roaming the campus searching for trash while other students at Waubonsee focused on cleaning up the nearby trails.

Garbage was hard to find, Thompson said, guessing that must mean few people litter, or trash gets picked up

immediately.

“Basically we’re just picking up cigarette butts,” the 18-year-old said, pausing her work on the north end of campus near the Academic and Professional Center.

But, she added, “It’s something.”

Sophomore Victoria White, who works in the Student Life office, said 40 students signed up for the Day of Service, which also is held once in the fall.

She said it’s nice to have students wanting to help clean up campus because it not only makes Waubonsee look presentable, but it also keeps trash away from wildlife, such as turtles and birds.

The other service locations were based on which organizations responded to emails about the event, White said.

Students shared their experiences volunteering through social media. On Twitter, for example, @WaubonseeLife tweeted, “Having a good time at Rebuild Aurora,” along with two photographs of students at work.

Waubonsee’s inaugural Day of Service was held in April 2014 and initiated by students. The goal was not only to provide service to

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The time Tracy Dockum spent working in an ice cream store came in handy Sunday as she competed in “The Amazing Race: St. Charles,” based on the reality TV show “The Amazing Race.”

Just like the show, participants had to complete a series of challenges. One was to make a waffle cone at Kimmer’s Ice Cream in downtown St. Charles. For Dockum, that was a piece of cake.

“I worked at an ice cream store for five summers,” she said.

She also didn’t mind the challenge of decorating a cupcake at Smallcakes: A Cupcakery of St. Charles and then having to eat it.

“That was the most delicious challenge,” Dockum said.

This was the first year of the event, put on by the St. Charles Park District.

The event featured 13 teams zipping around the downtown to complete a series of challenges. The teams traveled an average of 2.2 miles on foot, said Josh Williams, a supervisor at the St. Charles Park District’s Pottawatomie Community Center.

“We wanted to come up with a new spring event,” Williams said. “We try to do a fun fitness event every season.”

For its efforts, the team was given a trophy, along with four $25 gift cards to Blue Goose. Unlike the show, the team did not win $1 million, disappointing Andy Kahlenberg.

“We thought there was going to be a million-dollar prize,” he said, laughing.

What don’t these people understand? The state of Illinois is broke!

I have been puzzled for years that Springfield would make grants of hundreds of thousands of dollars for nonessential items, such as walking paths or walking-path bridges over roads, ball diamonds, etc., when Illinois is billions of dollars in the red.

Finally, we have a politician in Springfield who is making the tough decisions that nobody would make before, Gov. Rauner. I have a friend who feels Gov. Rauner will gain personally for being governor, but he can’t figure out what it

would be. Maybe Rauner (who is very rich) just got tired of waiting for someone else to do something and decided to try it himself. As Lee Iacocca is reported to have said – lead, follow or get out of the way.

Now we have to hope that there are enough Springfield politicians who have enough guts to work with – and vote with – Rauner, rather than what their political party dictates. If Rauner fails, I predict Illinois will be in bankruptcy within five years; then watch your grants, pensions and services disappear.

For those of you that may not know it, Gov. Rauner is not taking a salary or a pension.

Also, when he toured the governor’s mansion he found it in disrepair. He is using “private money” (probably his own) to make the repairs and make it fit to occupy. When is the last time you heard or saw a politician do that? He also stated that he plans to scale back the Illinois fleet of jet planes. The politicians will have to drive to Springfield. Horrors!

Marmion ‘resiliency’ key in win

The Cadets’ No. 1 doubles team of Luke Hoss and Dave Demoll listened and took that to heart Monday in a evenly matched game against Geneva.

The doubles duo fell in their first set, but came back to win the next two sets to lead Marmion as part of a 6-1 win over Geneva in the nonconference dual meet.

“One thing I am very encouraged by is to see the team stay very resilient,” Tsang said. “Once you build some confidence in this sport, it can go a long way. [Hoss] and [Demoll] got better with each and every game they played,

First-year coach Zach Evans thought maybe his team wasn’t mentally ready coming in, but believes that stamina will get better as the season goes on.

“I think we ran out of a gas a little bit at the end,” Evans said. “We had a week in between matches, and it is hard to simulate the energy it takes in a game in practice, but we will address this, learn and get better from this.”

The Vikings got their one win from Mike Guffey at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

Although most of the matches remained close for most of

Monday afternoon, Marmion made things difficult with that one Geneva win coming via a second-set tiebreak.

Marmion got two more wins from two-time state qualifier John King, who cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win in No. 1 singles, and Dom Barone (No. 3), as the senior lost just two games in two sets.

With Marmion not being in a conference this season after winning six straight Suburban Catholic Conference titles, Tsang knows how important each match is, even this early in the season.

“We have put a lot of teams on our schedule that will be in our sectional,” Tsang said.

“That will make the seeding meeting much easier, but it also helps us play competition we will see later in the year.

We obviously would like a high seed, so beating these teams early will help with that.”

‘Singles kid’ Amburgey channels endurance Moves from doubles as STC North senior

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com St. Charles North boys tennis coach Sean Masoncup always considered Aaron Amburgey “more of a singles kid,” even as he inserted him into the doubles lineup last season.

Amburgey starred at doubles in Crestwood, Kentucky, outside Louisville, for two springs before transferring to North as a junior. Teamed with Grant Spellman in 2014, he helped the pair to a 35-7 record and a state tournament berth, but now eyes a transition into his destiny in waiting.

Off to a 7-1 start this season – including separate victories against a pair of highly touted South Carolina foes over spring break last month – Amburgey knows things won’t always look this seamless.

“I feel like my fitness level will definitely improve by the end of the year, but definitely

with moving to singles from doubles, it just takes a lot more endurance,” he said.

Masoncup, naturally, has little doubt Amburgey can adjust.

He lauds his attitude, work ethic and technique with equal enthusiasm – and in no particular order.

“Either ground stroke is very effective. He’s got a very good serve,” Masoncup said.

“He’s a very effective player.

He’s a strong player.”

Amburgey admits his lack of singles experience in high school, but certainly has channeled his time in developmental tennis.

It’s not as if the doubles tactics he internalized are moot, either. Although moving away from them proved a challenge at first, they also helped Amburgey quickly learn one of the most important virtues of singles play.

“Definitely the patience,”

Amburgey said. “Doubles is definitely a lot less patience, a lot more aggressive and fastpaced. I definitely have noticed early that I’m relaying on my fitness level more and playing solid [strokes], but not trying to kill the ball or anything like that.”

Regardless of how his senior season plays out, Amburgey plans to attend Wisconsin, and is leaning toward studying economics.

He calls NCAA Division I play “probably a little out of my league,” but figures he can either find a club team or no shortage of recreational opponents in an active town such as Madison.

Until then, he’s eager to see how he stacks up as “a singles kid,” at long last.

“He could have one of the best years in our program’s history,” Masoncup said. “He’s playing very well right now.”

Forte skips first voluntary workout

F o r t e , 29, is entering the final season of a four-year, $30 million pact, with a 2015 compen- Matt Forte sation total of $8.2 million, including a $100,000 workout bonus, per Spotrac.

Although this portion of the offseason program is voluntary, Forte’s absence could foreshadow a potential holdout.

After being slapped with the franchise tag in 2012, he missed the entire offseason program before agreeing to his current deal.

The No. 2 rusher in franchise history, Forte is coming off his third consecutive 1,000-yard season.

He caught 102 passes, a

new NFL record for running backs. He’s started 107 of a possible 112 games during his seven NFL campaigns.

Forte is set to earn the fourth-highest salary among all NFL running backs in 2015, according to Spotrac.

The Bears are expected to lean on Forte heavily as the centerpiece of their runbased offense under Fox and coordinator Adam Gase.

They signed veteran Jacquizz Rodgers to spell Forte and return second-year players Ka’Deem Carey and Senorise Perry.

If Forte intends to hold out, general manager Ryan Pace will face a difficult decision.

Despite being remarkably durable, Forte is reaching the age when the performance of most backs drop precipitously.

This also could be a banner draft class for running backs, a potential positive for finding Forte’s replacement but a potential roadblock should Pace seek to explore trade options.

The first mandatory minicamp in which Forte’s absence would be subject to fine is June 16 to 18.

One new face, one new place, one familiar refrain Erik Miller cleared 6 feet, 10 inches in the high jump about two weeks after committing to the Illinois State men’s track and field program last spring.

Iowa was on his recruiting radar at the time, but considering the then-St. Charles North senior was merely a self-described “6-8 jumper,” Miller settled in with the Redbirds.

It turns out Iowa rekindled its interest after Miller’s Class 3A state meet effort, prompting him to move on from ISU after not even competing for the school. On Monday, Miller was set to sign a transfer to Iowa, beginning as a student-athlete majoring in finance for the 2015-16 school year.

“At the time, ISU was the best decision for me, and that’s what I did,” Miller said.

“I don’t know, just being on campus here on ISU for a little bit, I just realized I wanted a little more from a campus setting and in athletics. And Iowa gives me that opportunity.”

Miller reiterated his appreciation for his Redbirds coaches and teammates, especially as he concludes his redshirt season.

With ISU coveting the 6-foot-3, 195-pound Miller as a decathlete, he suffered a torn shoulder labrum and chipped bone after taking an awkward fall upon tripping over a hurdle during winter training.

He underwent surgery in December.

Two weeks ago, Iowa offered him a partial scholarship. After some pondering, he accepted.

“They treated me really well at Illinois State,” Miller said. “It’ s great school, great people, but I just want to challenge myself more at the University of Iowa.”

Iowa promoted longtime former assistant Joey Woody to head coach in July 2014 after the retirement of Iowa athletics Hall of Famer Larry Wieczorek.

Cougars search for early offense: Cedar Rapids lefthander Mat Batts limited the Cougars to one run and two hits in 5⅔ innings in Thursday’s Opening Day win at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Naturally, it prompted the same kinds of puns Batts has been hearing throughout his baseball career.

“I just always get the offense [stuff],” Batts said. “ ‘How are you not a hitter?’ type things.”

It hasn’t just been Batts holding the Cougars in check.

Entering Monday’s game at Burlington, the club had been outscored, 24-14, in losing its first four games.

Packing for the short bus trip to Iowa after Cedar Rapids completed a three-game sweep Saturday afternoon, however, the Cougars hardly panicked.

“As far as approach, we’ve got to keep these guys confident and let them know they’re doing fine, you know,” hitting coach Vince Harrison said. “It’s early, and there’s no need to panic. I feel like we’re swinging it good.”

Here is a little bit about getting to know me better: I graduated from Bradley University in Peoria in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in sports communication. I have worked for the Northwest Herald in Crystal Lake as a part-time Chris Casey member of the sports staff for the past year and a half.

Before Bradley, I graduated from Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock.

I was a three-sport athlete, playing basketball, baseball and soccer.

I have lived in Illinois for the past 15 years, but beore that, I was born and lived the first nine years of my life on the east coast in New Jersey. Needless to say, I still support many of the New York teams that I grew up watching. Yes, that includes the hated New York Yankees.

Since I was young, I have wanted to work in sports. It is my passion and something I always find myself around. I can sit down and watch or play just about any sport.

East, off to a 9-0 start, earned the 600th victory in program history. The tallying began in 1982, when then-St. Charles High School finished 8-1-1.

“It’s an absolutely amazing achievement for our program, which has fantastic history,” Saints coach Paul Jennison said. “It’s great for these girls to be part of such a historic feat. I don’t know if they know right now the historical importance of what they’ve achieved, and what the program before them has achieved.”

According to program archives, Tim Dailey (239) has earned the majority of the victories, followed by Joe Moreau (198) Pat Feulner (91) and Jennison (72).

Laurie Seidl is the leading goal-scorer with 115, while Merit Elzey is the program’s shutout leader with 61.

Jennison said the team was aware it stood nine victories away from the milestone entering the season, but has worked toward improving on last season’s runner-up state finish in IHSA Class 3A. “One of the great things about this group is we really have just focused on getting better,” Jennison said.

“Anything that’s happened along the way with wins or hitting milestones like this, they’re just bonuses on the journey.”

Tin toys, especially those that picture everyday life, are popular with today’s collectors. Political, social, women’s work, and other themes inspired toy makers. Many early toys were made of very thin tin that was painted in bright colors. Some of the toys moved when wound and had either a clockwork or a key wind mechanism. Toy collectors are careful to use the proper word - “clockwork” or “windup.” Clockwork toys have gears and parts like those used on a clock. In 1862, a cheaper type of power for moving toys was developed that used a spring, which was wound with a key or crank. Some still were being made as late as 1920. By the end of World War II, plastic parts were used for toys and the earlier metal wind-up was out of production. Battery-operated toys were made in Japan after 1946 and today there are electronic toys. All of these toys are popular with collectors and price is determined by condition, rarity and the appeal of the design. Toys that move or make noise always attract buyers. *** Q: I have a gold ring that belonged to my grandfather and perhaps his father. It’s engraved with initials on a flat section on the front. The sides of the ring band are decorated with a geometric pattern. Inside is a small mark, the capital letters “OB” in a rectangle with clipped corners. Can you tell me who made it?

A: OB stands for Ostby & Barton Co. a jewelry firm that worked from 1880 to the 1950s. Englehart C. Ostby was born in Norway, moved to the United States,

and by 1879, had joined with Nathan B. Barton to form a jewelry company. The firm was so successful they became the country’s largest jewelry manufacturer and the largest ring makers in the world. In 1912, Ostbys, Barton and his 22-year-old daughter Helen went on a trip to Europe to vacation and to buy precious stones for the company. They changed their vacation plans, deciding to return on the RMS Titanic with friends. When the Titanic hit the iceberg, the Ostbys both went from their staterooms to the lifeboats and waited to leave. Barton went back for a coat and missed a lifeboat; he drowned and his body was later found, identified, and buried near his home. Barton’s daughter, who had to leave the Titanic without him, was rescued, and she continued working with her brother at Ostby & Barton. Collectors search for pieces of O & B jewelry partly because of Nathan’s newsworthy death and partly because of the quality of the jewelry. Price depends on the value of the stones, the gold and the design. Most jewelry offered online is priced from $125 to $350, with some prices as high as $3,500. *** Q: I have the chance to buy an old Sligh dresser from a family member.

Dear Abby: My husband, “Rory,” and I both come from close families. Whenever something is wrong, troublesome, etc., in either of our families, we have meetings where the entire immediate family comes together to discuss the issue.

The problem is, I am not invited to his! It’s not like I’m a recent addition to this family. Rory and I dated for 15 years before getting married. My family started inviting him to our meetings after we had dated for a year, including discussions about my brother’s stint in rehab.

Rory’s family has had lots of similar meetings, but I am excluded because I am not a blood relative. Even when my husband lost his job, I was not invited to attend. I was left sitting out in the hallway with the children and the boyfriend of one of his other siblings.

Physical therapy can help loosen stiff spine and joints Dear Doctor K: I have ankylosing spondylitis. Can you discuss this condition and the best way to treat it?

Dear Reader: Ankylosing spondylitis is a form of arthritis in which the spine and other joints become inflamed and stiff.

A person with this condition usually feels pain or stiffness in the lower back, especially in the morning or after inactivity.

Pain tends to begin in the two joints between the spine and the pelvis (the sacroiliac joints) and can be felt in the buttocks. It then works its way up the lower spine. Eventually, the disorder can affect the entire spine and can cause discomfort in the torso and legs. Symptoms may alternately improve and worsen.

As the spine and its supporting structures stiffen, a person may begin to stoop over. The stoop can become very severe.

With time, the bones of the spine can fuse or grow together. This causes an extremely stiff, rigid backbone. (I’ve put an X-ray image of a spine affected by ankylosing spondylitis on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

In addition to the spine and joints of the chest, ankylosing spondylitis can inflame the hip joints and fingers and toes. People

Pain and rigidity in the lower back can cause extreme pain and problems walking. At some point, a back brace or other devices, such a corset, cane or joint splints, may help.

A rigid spine and stiff joints between the ribs and breastbone may make it harder for the chest to expand. As a result, it may be difficult to take a deep breath.

Breathing exercises can help maintain your lung capacity.

If you smoke, quitting should be a priority. If you can’t take in a deep breath because of this disease, adding lung damage from smoking puts you at greater risk for severe breathing problems and pneumonia.

In people with ankylosing spondylitis, stiffness often improves with activity. Regular

exercise can help prevent the disorder from getting worse.

A physical therapist can develop an exercise routine to help the spine remain flexible. The routine probably will include range-ofmotion and stretching exercises.

Abdominal and back exercises can help you maintain good posture so you are less likely to stoop.

Swimming is a good exercise because it may be easier to move stiff, painful areas in the water.

Biking is another good option.

Hot baths, heat and massage can help to relieve pain. Try to sleep on your back on a firm mattress. Use a small pillow or none at all.

Many medications can help to reduce joint pain and inflammation. These include anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relievers.

The FDA has also approved TNF blockers to treat ankylosing spondylitis. These blockers are powerful new drugs that block the activity or production of TNF, a substance in the body that causes inflammation. Surgery is not usually needed.

Children should be allowed to choose what and how much to eat, and parents should respect the individual taste preferences of their children.

I sure wish my father would have followed this information when I was a young child. He thought he was doing me a big favor by insisting that I eat everything prepared by my mother, “because when you are older you will be enjoying all the foods you don’t like now.”

He was a good man, and I know that he meant well, but the foods I disliked then are not on my plate now. The list includes liver, carrots and all vegetables that are creamed.

Dr. Wallace: You told a 17-year-old girl who found out that she was pregnant to tell her parents because they loved her and would help her make the best decision for her. I strongly disagree. Parents become much too emotional when they find out their daughter is pregnant. It would have been better if you had suggested that she visit a clinic that deals with unwed pregnant girls. They know how to help and keep everything confidential. I know what I’m talking about. I went to my mother first when I found out that I was pregnant. BIG MISTAKE! – Nameless, Michigan

After the shock of learning their unwed daughter is pregnant, most parents will rally and provide the support necessary at this difficult time. Only when parents fail, clinics designed to provide medical and emotional support could be an alternative.

Dr. Wallace: This letter is for the guy who felt like a “goody-goody” because he was under peer pressure to “party” and he said no, but he was thinking about saying yes. Several years ago, I was in the same situation. I fought the urge, but eventually said yes to “party time.” At first, it was great fun. But after a year or so, I saw many in the “fun group” get into trouble at school or get addicted to drugs. Three of them died while riding in a car with a driver high on cocaine.

My only salvation was that I met a superb girl who forced me to choose – her or my former lifestyle. I chose her.

How should the defenders card to try to defeat four spades after West leads his fourth-highest diamond?

South opened with a textbook vulnerable three-bid: a good seven-card suit and 6-10 high-card points. North knew that his partner might lose the first four tricks, but maybe the game would be laydown, or West might find a losing lead (perhaps a singleton heart).

West chose to lead from his stronger minor.

East could see that his side had to take four minor-suit tricks; either three diamonds (West led from queen-fourth of diamonds) and one club, or two diamonds and two clubs.

First, after winning with his diamond king (low from touching honors when playing third hand high), East cashed the diamond ace.

When West followed suit with his two, it told East that West had led from a five-card suit. Then, needing two club tricks, what did East do?

If West had the club king, it wouldn’t matter, but in case West had only the queen, East shifted to his club two. Then he waited to see if South would guess correctly.

Finally, note that if West had led from a four-card diamond suit, he would have played a diamond higher than the five at trick two.
