OUT AND ABOUT Kogan at Books Between Bites BATAVIA – Batavia’s monthly book program, Books Between Bites, welcomes back frequent guest Rick Kogan on Thursday.

The free book discussion series is held from noon to 1 p.m. at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia. Kogan, host of WGN radio’s Sunday evening program “After Hours with Rick Kogan,” previously has made 15 visits to Books Between Bites.

This year he will discuss two Chicago writers who he believes are often overlooked: Willard Motley and John Bartlow Martin. In addition, he wants to talk about film critic, Roger Ebert. The public is invited to attend this free program, and reservations are not required. It is held in the large community room on the main level of the Batavia Public Library.

Student artwork on display at Kaneland Fine Arts Festival

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland High School sophomore Andriy McFarlin loves the creativity of working with clay.

“Ceramics class was my favorite class last semester,” he said. “I could go and create something rather than copy word to word out of a textbook. I like being able to take something that came directly from the earth and make it into a usable and reusable art piece.”

His ceramic house was one of many student art works on display Sunday at the 15th annual Kaneland Community Fine Arts Festival produced by the newly named Kaneland Arts Initiative at Kaneland High School.

The house doubles as a cookie jar.

“The whole idea was to make a Christmas gift for my grandmother,” McFarlin said.

Besides display his artwork at the festival, he was selling cancer awareness bracelets to raise money for the student

group Prevention of Dangerous Actions, which promote healthy choices and discourage destructive behaviors. The group is raising money to put together comfort bags for cancer patients to “brighten their day while they are in the hospital,” McFarlin said.

This year, the Geneva-based Changing Children’s Worlds Foundation sponsored an art contest in participation with the Kaneland Arts Initiative. The contest generated 35 entries, said Kimberly Svevo-Cianci, the group’s president and executive

director.

Peter Jefferson’s ceramic house took first place in the high school category.

“The house represents love for your children because it provides shelter for them,” Jefferson stated in the narrative accompanying the artwork.

Svevo-Cianci said her group tries to help parents better communicate with their kids.

“When parents are communicating more positively with their kids, the kids listen differently,” she said. “They are more attuned to their children’s feelings.”

The church put together a good event that had warm weather, said Joe Rodriguez, who walked over from his Mill Creek home with his family to watch the event. Children were able to enter the egg hunt area after the helicopter made the egg drop and landed again.

Rodriguez thought the egg drop and hunt had been well organized.

Grant said the day went smoothly because of the 40 volunteers, including those who filled eggs, as well as event partners Chick-fil-A and the Mill Creek Golf Club.

“We look forward to doing it again next year,” Diamond said.

Strong winds and dark clouds Saturday did not stop the first helicopter egg drop event at Faith Baptist Church Mill Creek.

A red, four-seat light helicopter safely dropped about 2,000 Easter eggs into a fencedoff area west of the church, 1S455 S. Mill Creek Drive near Geneva. Children throughout a crowd of about 675 people cheered every time another batch of eggs fell from 35 feet in the air.

“It was super cool,” said Joanna Hellyer of Yorkville.

“The kids really enjoyed seeing the helicopter come in and drop all the eggs.”

Hellyer came to the event with her two children, two nieces and her mother. This was her family’s first time at an egg hunt with a helicopter and the group’s first time at Faith Baptist Church Mill Creek.

Grant Diamond, the church’s head pastor, said he ended up meeting several new faces beyond his congregation of about 80 people, including residents from DuPage and DeKalb counties. The event was held partly to change the perception for younger generations that churches are judgmental places, Diamond said.

“There were lots of new opportunities to share the love of God with people and invite them out to Easter,” Diamond said after the event.

Diamond and the parents admitted they were nervous about the helicopter and weather before the event.

High winds forced Grant Macdonald, head pilot at Chicago Helicopter Express, to change course so that he could land on the church grounds safely, Diamond said.

Someone dressed as the Easter Bunny emerged from the helicopter and waved to shouting children before the eggs were loaded up. After the bright orange barrier fence was moved several feet south to Main Street, the helicopter took off and circled above the

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Geneva girls soccer goalkeeper Samantha Hauser missed three matches while recovering from mono, including the Vikings’ only loss so far this season.

“At the very end I was just so ready to get back,” Hauser said. “All my energy was back so I was just happy with that.”

Her teammates are awfully glad Hauser is back, too, a point underscored Saturday.

Hauser sparkled throughout Geneva’s 1-0 victory against host St. Charles East as the Vikings won the Rose Augsburg Drach Invitational.

Hauser made several strong saves to keep the Saints at bay, including a pair of attempts from Darcy Cunningham, one of which on a breakaway from a sharp angle.

“I was pretty confident on the breakaway,” said Hauser, who returned earlier this week for the start of the tournament. “The one off of Cunningham’s [free kick], it went through a couple of their legs and I grabbed it, somehow I got on that ball, I’d say that was my No. 1 save.”

Capitalizing on favorable first-half wind conditions, Geneva (5-1-1) scored with 12:43 to play in the opening half when junior Mary Landry scored on a rebound after East goalkeeper Kendra Sheehan made the first stop on a Courtney Lardas shot.

Landry said, “me and Courtney, we have a history of working well together.”

It was the sixth goal of the season for Landry, one of the area’s breakout performers this season.

Landry opted not to play club soccer during the offseason, which was a concern, but she’s returned to the game invigorated.

“I didn’t play during the club season, so that was definitely hard,” Landry said.

“Coming back, I just knew that since I was gone for all that time, I knew I had to focus, just focus on my touch es-

Protecting a 1-0 lead and with the wind shifting to East’s favor, Geneva coach Megan Owens opted to take a conservative approach for the second half and rely on her seasoned defense.

“We did play very defensive in the second half, which ended up working for us,” Owens said. “But we switched our formation to make it more defensive just to kind of counteract the wind factor. But my girls worked hard. It was a battle.”

East coach Paul Jennison credited Hauser’s play while adamantly endorsing his team’s performance.

“As far as I’m concerned,

that’s not a game we should be coming out of and losing,” Jennison said. “I think that’s a game we should be winning.

I think the way you’re meant to play soccer, we’re playing the right way, and we’re going to keep building on that.”

Both East (4-1-2) and Geneva entered the final day of tournament play having won once and tied once earlier in the week.

The Augsburg Drach title was Geneva’s first during Owens’ tenure.

“They had a chance to make history,” Owens said.

“The seniors had that opportunity. It was in their hands, and they worked hard to get back into it after tying our first game of the tournament.”

Knights get out of hitting funk in sweep of Bulldogs MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland softball team broke out of its hitting slump in a major way Saturday, pounding out 30 hits to sweep Batavia in a nonconference doubleheader.

The Knights topped the Bulldogs, 12-2 and 19-5, in two five-inning games.

“Every team goes through a funk and we were in one of those funks,” Kaneland coach Brian Willis said. “Today we hit our way out of it.”

Slotting second baseman Morgan Weber at the top of the batting order was one of the keys to the Knights’ offensive resurgence.

“I thought Morgan did a nice job of leading off for us,” Willis said. “It was the first time I put her in the leadoff role. I thought she did an excellent job of getting on base and setting the table for our offense.”

The freshman was only retired once during her nine plate appearances for the day.

Weber collected three hits, including her second home run

of the season, drew four walks and scored six runs.

“I think my confidence level was up there a little more than in the first week and I was keeping my eye on the ball and keeping my shoulder down,” Weber said.

The second baseman knocked a Rachael Lovestrand pitch over the center field fence for a solo home run in the second inning of the first game.

“That felt pretty great. I hit one yesterday, too,” Weber said. “The pitch was right down the middle and a was a perfect changeup so I stayed down and took it all the way.”

Kaneland third baseman Paige Kuefler also had a good day at the plate, going 5 for 7. The junior collected three doubles, a triple and a single.

A Knights six-run fourth inning broke open the first game. Eleven Kaneland players batted and made the most of five hits, three walks and Batavia errors to take an 11-2 lead. The contested ended in the next inning when pinch-hitter Courtney Davis singled home Lanie Callaghan

and gave her team a 10-run lead.

In the nightcap, Kaneland (6-5) scored early and often against the Bulldogs (0-6).

The Knights batted around in the first three innings and sent 11 hitters to the plate in the fourth. Kaneland runners crossed the plate five times in three of the first four innings.

In the second, the team only scored four runs.

“I give Kaneland a lot of credit. They hit the ball hard today,” Batavia coach Lupe Castellanos said. “We had some errors today. We can’t afford to give up those little errors between those hard hits.”

Willis would like his team to tighten up the defense.

“I don’t think they had an earned run today, everything was either booted or extra bases or something,” said the coach. “We need to clean it up.”

Junior pitcher Angie Morrow won the first game for the Knights while teammate Anissa Becker earned the second victory. Lovestrand and Alyssa Klemm were tagged for the losses.

Dear Abby: I recently exchanged pleasantries via email and text messaging with a lady I met on a website.

One day later, I received a message from her stating she’d prefer our method of communication be kept to email and texting because she wasn’t much of a phone talker.

Over the past few months, I have been out a number of times with other women who also expressed their preference to keep communication limited to email and texting. Is this becoming common?

I may be old-fashioned because I feel interpersonal relationships – especially initially – should include the element of voice inflection. I think it’s more effective than a guessing game that only a full page of text can provide. Am I wrong? – Wants To Talk In Reno Dear Wants To Talk: I don’t think you are wrong, and I happen to agree with you.

I, too, usually learn more from a spoken conversation than from an email or text because I can distinguish whether the person is joking or being serious.

But you and I are becoming the minority. Today many younger people feel more comfortable communicating online – at least initially.

Dear Abby: My husband recently returned to the family business to become the general manager. He is in control of hiring new employees, and he recently told me they need to hire more people.

I have mentioned several times my interest in working there as an administrative assistant.

However, my husband either changes the subject or gets angry when I ask about it.

Many play far too quickly at the bridge table. True, taking one hour would be considered excessive. But a minute or so is perfectly acceptable. And if someone complains to you, reply: “You have just ruined my train of thought. I will have to start all over again.”

In this deal, West leads the club ace against four spades. How should he plan the defense?

North’s auction showed four spades and game-going values. So South, who also had four spades, corrected from three no-trump to four spades.

Many would cash the club king at trick two, then look around for the next step. But that would be too late. West needs to realize that his partner has only one heart. (South showed four, dummy has three and West holds five.) West must also hope that his partner has a speedy trump entry.

At trick two, West shifts to a heart. Declarer wins on the board and plays a trump, but East wins with his ace and returns a club.

West takes the trick with his carefully conserved entry, the king, and gives his partner the lethal heart ruff.

Finally, note that if North had raised one no-trump to three no-trump, West probably would have led the heart nine, top of nothing. Then, when East got in with his spade ace, he would have had to find a club shift to defeat the contract.

Pause to think – you will defend and play better.
