By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A few dozen Waubonsee Community College students on Saturday fanned out across the campus and Aurora in the name of service.

WCC’s Day of Service took three groups of students – identifiable in bright orange T-shirts with the phrases “Give a hand” and “Volunteer WCC” on the front and back – to the Kiwanis Club of Aurora, Mutual Ground and Rebuild Aurora Together.

Another group also remained on the Sugar Grove campus to tidy the grounds.

Second-year student Elizabeth Thompson of St. Charles was part of a trio roaming the campus searching for trash while other students at Waubonsee focused on cleaning up the nearby trails.

Garbage was hard to find, Thompson said, guessing that must mean few people litter, or trash gets picked up immediately.

“Basically we’re just picking up cigarette butts,” the 18-year-old said, pausing her work on the north end of campus near the Academic and Professional Center.

But, she added, “It’s something.”

Sophomore Victoria White, who works in the Student Life office, said 40 students signed up for the Day of Service, which also is held once in the fall.

She said it’s nice to have students wanting to help clean up campus because it not only makes Waubonsee look presentable, but it also keeps trash away from wildlife, such as turtles and birds.

The other service locations were based on which organi-

zations responded to emails about the event, White said.

Students shared their experiences volunteering through social media. On Twitter, for example, @WaubonseeLife tweeted, “Having a good time at Rebuild Aurora,” along with two photographs of students at work.

Waubonsee’s inaugural Day of Service was held in April 2014 and initiated by students. The goal was not only to provide service to those who need it, but also to give students an opportunity to give back to their community and to plant the seeds of lifelong volunteering, Student Life staff said then.

Projects for the first Day of Service included cleaning up twigs, branches and garbage at Elburn Lions Park and cleaning Gilman Trail from Galena Boulevard to the college.

BATAVIA – The Batavia Public Library will host a reception to recognize Batavia resident Susan S. Russo as a library leader at 2 p.m. Sunday in the library’s Founders Room, 10 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia. The public is invited.

Russo was named a library leader at the library board’s January meeting.

Russo was on the board of library trustees from 1998 to 2003 and was president of the board when the current library building opened in 2002.

In her nomination letter, former library Trustee Lynn Elam said Russo “was the driving force that resulted in two successful referenda, sale and purchase of downtown property, and the construction of a new centrally located library.”

Elam also cited Russo’s participation in creating the library’s community development fund, which evolved into the Batavia Public Library Foundation.

Russo is an attorney and has a law office in North Aurora.

The library leader program honors those who have made outstanding contributions to the Batavia Public Library Susan S. Russo D i s t r i c t .

Nominations are accepted annually between July 1 and Dec. 31. Criteria and application forms are available at the library.

Swedish American kids choir seeks new singers BATAVIA – The Swedish American Children’s Choir is seeking new singers for the spring and summer season.

Children 4 to 17 years of age are welcome to join the Midwest’s largest choir of its kind for children.

The choir, now in its 16th season, has performed at numerous local venues and festivals and has completed

six performance tours outside of Illinois.

Previous singing experience is not required, nor is a Scandinavian heritage.

Singers learn about the Scandinavian heritage through the arts and perform songs in English and Swedish and Scandinavian folk dances. The choir rehearses in Batavia.

Fire on Saturday afternoon causes $3,200 in damage to Batavia house

No one was injured in the fire. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 1:29 p.m., and had the fire under control at 1:40 p.m., according to a news re-

lease from the Batavia Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to a report of a fire in the attic of the house.

Upon arrival, they found smoke emitting from the roof vents.

After pulling the power attic vent and flashing, firefighters found a squirrel nest smoldering, the release stated.

After removing the burning material, fire companies on the roof and in the attic extinguished additional hot spots caused by falling nesting material.

There was damage to the roof, fan, wiring, additional wiring for the hallway lights, roof rafters, joists, the PVC plumbing vent and gutter, according to the release.

ST. CHARLES – The time that Tracy Dockum spent working in an ice cream store came in handy Sunday as she competed in “The Amazing Race: St. Charles,” based on the popular reality TV show, “The Amazing Race.”

Just like the TV show, participants had to complete a series of challenges. One of those challenges was to make a waffle cone at Kimmer’s Ice Cream in downtown St. Charles. For Dockum, it was a piece of cake.

“I worked at an ice cream store for five summers,” she said.

She also didn’t mind the challenge of decorating a cupcake at Smallcakes: A Cupcakery of St. Charles and then having to eat it.

“That was the most delicious challenge,” Dockum said.

This was the first year of the event, put on the St. Charles Park District. The event featured 13 teams zipping around the downtown to complete a series of challenges. The teams traveled an average of 2.2 miles on foot, said Josh Williams, a supervisor at the St. Charles Park District’s Pottawatomie Community Center.

“We wanted to come up with a new spring event,” Williams said. “We try to do a fun fitness event every season.”

Stanford-bound senior wins both hurdle races, part of two winning relays

By THOMAS KUEBEL editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Batavia’s Les Hodge boys track meet offered an opportunity for area athletes to get their feet wet for the first outdoor meet of the season.

Burlington Central’s Stanford bound hurdler and sprinter, however, stole the show.

Lucas Ege was a winner in the 110-meter hurdles, 300 hurdles, and part of the Rockets’ winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. Ege, who last year won the Class 2A state championship in the 300 hurdles, was never threatened in either of his individual events, getting off to quick starts in both races.

As with all hurdlers making the transition from indoor to outdoor, Ege noticed some differences between the indoor 55s and 110s.

“It felt kind of long, so I wasn’t in the right shape for it yet, but I’m getting there,” said Ege, a senior.

Burlington Central won a majority of the day’s events – including the long jump, triple jump, 4x800 relay and discus – making coach Mike Schmidt a happy camper.

“I like this meet; it’s great competition,” Schmidt said.

“We got a nice day, too, and the kids seem to be running pretty well.”

Not to be outshined on its home track, Batavia won a handful of individual titles, as well. Sophomore Jay Hunt started the meet for the Bulldogs by winning the high jump with yet another clearance of over six feet.

Tyler Mansfield cleared 14 feet in the pole vault, which is three inches over the qualifying height needed at sectionals to advance to the Class 3A state meet.

Shea Bastian won the 3,200, beating teammate Ryan Wieties who finished third. Not to be outdone, Wieties came back to win the 400.

“I’m kind of disappointed with the two-mile, but elated with the 400. So it kind of balances itself out,” said Wieties,

“The quarter was a big surprise. Wieties ran a 49.9, which is a phenomenal time right now,

and he hasn’t really popped one like that,” Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron said. “Chad McMarrow, a sophomore, ran a 51 for us and freshman Reggie Phillips ran a 51. That was a huge shock; I’m so excited about that.”

Geneva and St. Charles North were the other Kane County Chronicle-area teams who participated in the meet.

The Vikings’ Tyler Dau won the 800, while Matt Weston tied for first in the shot put. Geneva was without sprinter/jumper Justin Taromina, who will be dealing with an appendix issue for the next few weeks. North got a victory in the 1600 from Steve Lewandowski.

“That’s pretty much the best response. Everything that we’d been doing incorrectly in the game – a selection of crosses and decision making of when to attack the near or far post – we did everything right on that goal. That was nice to keep it together.”

Shorthanded or not, the Saints ultimately channeled the resolve not to lose – especially against a major rival.

“We knew we could beat them and did not want to lose,” Santo Paulo said. “We wanted to keep our undefeated streak going, so that really motivated us to keep going and we really wanted to win this, especially since it’s our home tournament.”

Geneva (3-4-2) seemed to have the Saints’ game plan figured out in the second half, checking them offensively and defending well on set pieces to head into the half tied at zero.

“Overall, I’m very happy with our performance,” Geneva coach Megan Owens said.

“We end the first half, 0-0. I think that was very solid by us. I think it was one of our best showings. Yeah, did we make a rookie mistake and leave two girls wide open in

front of the goal? Yeah, we did.

But we’re young. More than half our team is underclassmen. We had one mistake and it cost us.”

Coming off the Friday’s nightcap win against Naperville Central, Jennison knew his side would likely not be at its technical best on Saturday afternoon, but felt that playing with intensity could bring about the desired result.

“You’re playing a top 10 program in a Naperville Central who we really had to bring our best game of the year; it was our best game of the season [Friday] night,” Jennison said. “And then you have a local rival who’s also a state powerhouse now, that’s what they are. We had to bring our best game. Sometimes we tell the ladies, ‘Look, we know the quality is not going to be there, but we ask you to bring the effort and the intensity,’ and I think we did. The difference today was that we had just a little more quality in and around the box.”

Some variation of those words certainly worked at the intermission, with the Saints coming out firing immediately

to begin the second half.

Darcy Cunningham drove down the field and had a shot on following the second half whistle and ultimately was rewarded with an assist in the 46th minute as Sophie Jendrzejczyk broke the deadlock.

Cunningham drove down the right side into the 18-yard box, luring Ostergard off her line at the six before shooting.

Ostergard pushed the ball to her left, but Cunningham kept it in play, firing a right-footed cross back toward the center of the goalmouth, connecting with Jendrzejczyk for the 1-0 lead.

With a conference game still to play between the rivals on May 4, Owens was hopeful that her side, which has notably felt the absence of starting goalkeeper Emma Harkleroad (injury), among others, would be healthy by the postseason, where a potential third meeting with the Saints looms.

“We’re getting there; we’re getting to where we need to be, and by the end of the season when I get some of my injuries back, I’m very excited about where we’re going to be at,” Owens said.

ALGONQUIN – The Batavia baseball team has been looking for someone to make a play or for something to happen to turn its season around.

After a 4-1 loss to Jacobs on Saturday in which the Bulldogs registered just two hits, coach Matt Holm is continuing to search for answers.

“Our pitching has been great, but with the way we hit, we leave little room for error,” Holm said. “It’s awfully hard to win games when you’re only scoring one run. Again, there’s no room for errors, especially when you’re playing a team as hot as [Jacobs] is.”

leadoff hitter Steven Busby, who walked to open the game.

However, the Bulldogs only mustered one more hit in the final six innings to fall to the Golden Eagles (14-3) in the nonconference matchup.

“We have confidence in ourselves; there’s no question about that,” Batavia pitcher Ben Lynam said. “We just have to keep our heads up and know we will get out of this slump. We know we can do it.”

Lynam pitched a perfect three innings to start the game, but after throwing 71 pitches through 4⅓ innings, left for a reliever with the score still 1-0 in Batavia’s favor.

“You always want to stay in the game at that point,” Lynam said. “It’s up to the coaches, and that was the decision. I

wasn’t mad at all, just part of the game.”

After a couple hits and a ball thrown away on a pick-off attempt, Jacobs scored all four of its runs in the fifth.

“We are just still looking to get over the hump,” Holm said. We have had a lot of close losses and this one was obviously closer than the score indicates. We are taking steps, but putting the ball in play and scoring runs is at the top of the list.”

Jacobs pitcher Ryan George struck out six over six innings and induced a key double play ball off the bat of Busby after Batavia’s leadoff man reached in the sixth.

Batavia faces Larkin in a three-game Upstate Eight Conference River Division series this week.

ST. CHARLES – Alison Chesterfield had the ball lined up.

With the St. Charles East girls soccer team leading, 1-0, in the 55th minute Saturday, the Saints’ junior goalkeeper came off her line at the sixyard box, determined to clear the rapidly approaching ball inside the 18 as Geneva forward Megan Albrecht thundered toward her.

The next few plays went by in a blur; Chesterfield whiffed and the ball rolled past her toward the unoccupied net. The goalkeeper did the only thing she could, tripping Albrecht and instantly being sent off the pitch with a red card.

Geneva senior midfielder Megan Fitz buried the penalty kick in the bottom right corner, and with the Saints playing with a backup goalkeeper and 10 players, it looked like Geneva was verging on checkmate in the Augsburg-Drach Tournament finale.

The result, a 2-1 Saints win to keep the team unbeaten, couldn’t have been further

from that narrative.

Any momentum the Vikings had gained was immediately wiped out one minute later when Saints defender Sonia Ost knocked down a ball off a corner kick to Kelli Santo Paulo at the top of the 18.

Santo Paulo’s blast beat Vikings goalkeeper Carrie Ostergard to the near corner, giving the Saints the 2-1 lead and ultimately the gamewinner as the Saints (80) clinched a tournament championship.

It was the senior’s second goal in as many days after scoring in Friday’s 2-0 win against Naperville Central.

“No one was on me when I shot it,” Santo Paulo said. “I had time to take a touch and I saw an opening and that’s where I hit it. Sonia knocked it down to me; it was a really beautiful pass.”

Both teams entered play battle-tested and battered during the week, with East playing its fourth game in six days and Geneva its fifth.

“You can’t really ask any more if you concede a goal and score in a minute,” Saints coach Paul Jennison said.

Dear Abby: I’m 38, married for 16 years and the mother of two small children. I was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer and had a hysterectomy to remove it.

My husband has cheated more than once in the past, and since my recovery I have realized I never forgave him for it. I kept quiet and pretended I didn’t know.

Now I am bitter, angry and hurt. He goes out and stays out constantly. He does help with the kids, but I know I don’t belong here. I know what I want, and it’s not this life with him anymore.

I know I can leave at any time, but I feel my children deserve to be raised with both parents in the home since neither of us had that when we were growing up.

(My father died. His parents divorced when he was a toddler.) His family has been my family since the beginning of our relationship.

I want my children to grow up thinking marriage is forever and growing old with your partner is great.

I want them to have what I did not. If we are civilized and “pretend to be in love,” would my children be OK? I’m willing to stay in this marriage until they are old enough and on their own before I walk away.

Will they understand that I sacrificed my happiness for them to live with both parents? I want to be in love and happy, but would rather raise my babies with their father than someone else. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

South starts with six top tricks: three spades, one heart (given West’s opening lead), one diamond and one club. If the diamond finesse is winning, declarer will gain at least one overtrick.

If the finesse is losing, though, South is in danger. But will West know that South’s heart king is now unguarded?

Typically, third hand plays high at trick one, but he should not if his highest card is lower than the nine. Then, third hand should give count, playing high from a doubleton or low from three. Here, East must play his two, resisting the temptation to cover dummy’s five with his seven.

South will win with his jack, play a spade to dummy, and run the diamond queen, but West should know to win with his king and to cash the heart ace to drop South’s king. If East has three hearts, South started with only two. (East cannot have a singleton heart, because that would leave South with four, a holding he denied with his response to North’s Stayman inquiry.)

West will run his hearts for down one.
