8LOCAL BRIEFS Free presentation set April 23 in St. Charles ST. CHARLES – Jim Flanagan of Bentron Financial Group will lead an in-depth discussion on “Health Care in Retirement” at the Pottawatomie Community Center, 8 North Ave., St. Charles, at 7 p.m. April 23.

During his free presentation, Flanagan will provide details on the four parts of Medicare: Part A (hospital insurance), Part B (medical insurance), Part C (Medicare Advantage), and Part D (prescription drugs).

Flanagan also will share his knowledge of Medicare supplements and the different plans that are available.

In addition, attendees will receive an overview of longterm care insurance and the four strategies used to protect people from the high costs of long-term care.

The founder of Naperville-based Bentron Financial Group, Flanagan has been advising people at or near retirement age for more than 20 years, states a news release.

For the past 15 years, his specialties have included counsel on how and when to tap into Social Security benefits.

KANE COUNTY Bridge work to begin SUGAR GROVE – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that, weather permitting, bridge work on Route 56 and Route 30 over Route 47 in Sugar Grove will begin Tuesday.

The work includes steel beam repairs, new abutment bridge joints, bridge deck patching with a new latex concrete deck overlay and concrete repairs to the bridge slopewalls, abutments and piers. Lane reductions and closures will be necessary to complete the work.

The project has an anticipated completion date of July 15. Motorists can expect delays during times when the lane closures are in effect and should allow extra time for trips through this area.

Groundbreaking set for sheriff’s shooting range

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County Sheriff’s Office will celebrate the groundbreaking of its new qualifying range next month.

Lt. Ron Grommes on Friday told the Judicial and Public Safety Committee that the ceremony is set for 11 a.m. May 9, the day of the committee’s next meeting.

The Kane County Board approved the extra funding needed to build the firearms range at its March meeting.

Construction costs came in more than $800,000 over initial estimates, bringing the total to about $1.9 million.

the committee that overtime costs could become an issue in the next several months because nine employees are out for various reasons, including workman’s compensation and military leave.

The length of time each employee will be off ranges from a month to six months, he said.

He said filling the positions will require the sheriff’s office to use overtime.

In other news, the Kane County Coroner’s Office is planning an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 3 in conjunction with a medical waste disposal event.

Crowds savor food delights at event Sixth annual 60 Men Who Cook fundraiser to aid area organizations

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – With two pans frying cashew encrusted tilapia at once, Michael Olesen had some serious sizzle going on.

Spatula in one hand, squirt bottle of oil in the other, with help from his nephew Olesen was serving up some hot fresh food Friday night at the 60 Men Who Cook fundraiser at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles.

Olesen, who owns Stockholm’s in Geneva, said they serve the same entrée there, but he credited his kitchen staff with doing a better job making it.

“I’m participating in this event because it helps out wonderful organizations in town,” Olesen said as he squirted the pieces of fish with oil and turned them over. “And you’ve got to give back.”

The sixth annual event is a fundraiser for the Geneva History Museum, Geneva Lions and Rotary and the Geneva Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber spokeswoman Laura Rush said when they first started hosting the event, they told participants to make enough samples for 200.

“Now we tell them to make enough for 300 people because attendance has increased every year,” Rush said.

Brenda Bieller, of Batavia, praised her husband Scott Bieller’s gumbo offering.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said. “I can only hope I do her proud.”

Among the tasters was Barbara Hallberg of St. Charles, savoring every bite of cold fruit salad made by Geneva Middle School student Tommy Antonson.

“It is absolutely delicious,” Hallberg said. “It’s an old family recipe. My aunt made it and he’s added a few secret ingredients and it’s delicious.”

Sheila and Mitch Belon of Geneva were trying out breakfast in Spain by Rebecca Colburn of Gracious Hall Catering.

“We’re just getting started,” Colburn said. “This is very good. It’s got olives in there, eggs and sauce. And then you can quench your palate with some nonalcoholic sangria.”

“My favorite so far is Don Kramer’s prime rib,” Mutch Belon said.

Kramer is a Republican who will be running against Democrat Willie Mayes Sr. for Kane County sheriff in the November election.

One of the longest lines for food samples was at Ron Onesti’s prime rib slide. Onesti owns the Arcada Theater in St. Charles.

Shelley and Mark Svoboda of Geneva were the 20th couple in line, noshing on some southwest chili while waiting.

Shelley said this was their first time here, recommended by friends who have come every year.

“It’s the biggest line here so maybe it’s going to be the best,” Mark Svoboda said.

“We’re going to have to find out.”

Coldwater Creek files for bankruptcy; stores to close

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Coldwater Creek, a women’s clothing retailer, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Friday and announced it would close all of its stores by this summer.

The Coldwater Creek store at 310 Commons Drive, in the Geneva Commons shopping center, is among the chain’s 365 stores slated to be closed.

A spokesman said the retailer has just under 6,000 total employees.

According to its website, Coldwater Creek has 18 retail stores in Illinois.

The company is promoting a 40 percent off sale of all full-priced merchandise and going-out-of-business sales in the coming months, according

8LOCAL BRIEFS Road construction to resume Monday Weather permitting, road construction on Fabyan Parkway from Route 25 to Nagel Boulevard is expected to resume Monday and should conclude by the end of May. Work was suspended for the winter. Remaining work includes removal and replacement of the curb on the north side of the road, milling and asphalt removal, paving the final driving surface and final landscaping and restoration.

Fundraiser set for Geneva girl HOT NEW LISTING If you go Kayla Juan, a 5-year-old girl from Geneva, is working to regain her strength in Chicago as Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez and his wife, Terrie, are leading an effort to raise money for her medical expenses.

“I was really touched,” the girl’s mother, Cindy Juan, said of the Perez’s efforts to organize a fundraiser for Kayla, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor June 2013.

“I did not expect it.”

The fundraiser is to be from 5:30 to 11 p.m. today at Luigi’s Pizza & Fun Center, 732 Prairie St., Aurora, and will feature a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction where bidders do not need to be present to win such prizes as Easter baskets, gas cards and car washes, Terrie Perez said.

The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children and includes pizza, pasta and drinks.

Kayla is receiving physical and occupational therapy at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago after spending weeks at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, her mother said.

She described her daughter – who underwent surgery within a day of being diagnosed with medulloblastoma in June 2013 – as strong.

“Kayla is just a fighter, a strong, brave girl,” Juan said.

Terrie Perez, who works with Juan at Rush-Copley Medical Center, said it was heart-wrenching to know that her co-worker’s daughter was going through such

an illness. It’s sad when anybody gets cancer, she said, but it’s even sadder when it happens to children.

“They haven’t even had a chance to live life,” Terrie Perez said, “and then they’re having to deal with this.”

Terrie Perez said she didn’t hesitate to help Juan.

“Who wouldn’t?” she said.

“She’s such a great person and deserves the help.”

The fundraiser has gotten a good response so far, Terrie Perez said, adding she is hoping for a turnout of at least 150 people. She said the money raised today can be applied however the Juan family chooses.

Juan said her family is thinking of donating a portion to Ronald McDonald House because they are staying at one of its facilities.

“I can’t imagine going through what we’re going through without Ronald McDonald,” Juan said.

Donations to the Juan family also may be made at any Old Second Bank in the Kayla Juan Fund.

STANLEY ‘GIBBY’ A. MONOKOSKI Born: Oct. 11, 1950 Died: April 9, 2014 GENEVA – Stanley “Gibby” A. Monokoski, 63, of Geneva, passed away Wednesday April 9, 2014, at Journey Care Hospice.

He was born Oct. 11, 1950, in Chicago, the son of the late Stanley and Helene (Washko) Monokoski.

Gibby graduated from Northern Illinois School of Music with his BA and MA in music and engaged in Ph.D. studies at Northwestern University. He was a professor of music/instrumental at Waubonsee, where he taught music theory, composition, music literature and jazz piano, while coordinating the music performance program for more than 39 years. Among his honors, he was awarded as the teacher of the year in 1987 among all Illinois community colleges. He also was past president of the Fox Valley Symphony until it closed in 2001; he also served on the board of directors for Fox Valley Arts Hall of Fame. In addition, he received the Fox Valley Orchestra’s first-ever Champion of the Arts award for his dedication to the arts and education in the Fox Valley. He was well-loved by his students and colleagues.

Gibby is survived by his loving wife, Susan Rogaliner of Geneva; his stepdaughter, Amy Rogaliner of Chicago; his sisters, Dolores (Jack) Nelson of Palos Park, Carole Drust of Marietta, Ga., Beverly (Edwin) Lezaj of Flowery Branch, Ga., and Linda (Michael) Ruberto of Clearwater, Fla.; and his many nieces and nephews and friends.

ST. CHARLES – Wilma Marie Godfrey, 96, of St. Charles, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Johnson County, Ill., on Sept. 13, 1917, the daughter of Ward and Lillian (nee Moser) Newbold. She was united in marriage to Ralph A. Godfrey on April 3, 1942.

Wilma will be remembered for her love for her family and friends. She enjoyed raising her family in St. Charles. She extended an open door and a seat at her kitchen table for her family and their many friends. Her volunteer services included Sunday school teacher, Cub Scout den mother and preparing meals for the Lazarus House.

Wilma is survived by her three sons, Gene Godfrey, Jerry (Sherry) Godfrey, both of St. Charles and Dennis Godfrey of Sycamore; a daughter-in-law, Mary Kay (Don McVicar) Godfrey; seven grandchildren, Rick (Susie), Stefanie, Susan, Christopher, Jeff, Brad (Ming) and Kristen; and four great-grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, Jacob and Grace.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; a son, Don; two sisters, Opal Tanner and Virginia Busch; and two brothers, Carl Newbold and Gilbert Busch.

Attorney: ‘Big step forward’ in McIlvaine case

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The city of St. Charles has reached an agreement with Clifford McIlvaine on what needs to be completed or removed on his property as part of his decadeslong home improvement project.

The agreement was announced Friday during a court hearing with Kane County Circuit Judge David Akemann.

“Mr. McIlvaine finally has direction from the city on what needs to be done and when it needs to be done,” McIlvaine attorney Philip Piscopo said after the hearing. “It is a big step forward.”

The agreement calls for McIlvaine to be finished with the electrical work, as well as exterior trim painting, by May 15. He will be allowed to keep all his commercial vehicles on his property except for his boom truck, as long as they are kept on impervious surfaces and screening is added by the end of June.

McIlvaine disagreed with the city’s definition of commercial vehicles, but agreed to the request.

In addition, McIlvaine will

be able to keep the brick piles on the property until 2018 as long as they are piled neatly and covered by a tarp. City officials will be inspecting the brick piles Monday, and the two sides are set to appear in front of Akemann again Wednesday.

“We want it condensed into a neat pile,” said attorney Phillip Luetkehans, who represents the city of St. Charles.

McIlvaine Clifford said he plans to construct a McIlvaine lean-to structure to store the bricks and vehicles.

The city sued McIlvaine in 2010, pushing him to get the decadeslong home improvement project finished, and a work schedule later was agreed upon in court. McIlvaine was briefly jailed in 2012 when he refused to comply with the city’s plumbing code as part of the project.

The city has agreed to waive the $100 a day fines from now until July. The project was supposed to be completed by the end of September 2012, according to the order.

Pam Otto rabbits would do just fine in the wild. They eat grass, like wild rabbits do, and they can hop pretty fast, just like their wild cousins.

The truth is, pet bunnies, whose appetites run toward the pellets-n-greens end of the spectrum, and whose predator-avoidance skills are rusty at best, belong in the wild about as much as a cocker spaniel belongs with a pack of wolves.

Domestic rabbits are descended, not from the North American Sylvilagus, but from the European Oryctolagus cuniculus. For centuries, this species has been bred, first for meat and fur, then for qualities such as temperament and size.

Not only is it not fair to let a pet rabbit go in a preserve or park, it’s also illegal. Our local park districts as well as the Kane County Forest Preserve District all have ordinances prohibiting anything being released on their properties.

Then there’s the matter of disease transmission. Pet rabbits harbor a different set of microorganisms than those found in wild rabbits.

They can catch diseases in the wild, and they can spread diseases to the wild.

When Tim called me to report his find, he was hoping I could provide a list of rabbit rescue groups in the area.

There are several, for sure.

In fact, Hickory Knolls’ own Peter Rabbit came from our friends at the Fur Angels Animal Sanctuary in Aurora.

With a little time, I’m sure we could have delivered the Ferson bunnies to rescues and shelters all over northern Illinois. But my schedule didn’t permit that, nor did

Tim’s. Instead, he reached out to the fine folks at Critters Pet Shop, who took not just one but all eight rabbits and immediately started giving them the care they had needed. Baths to get rid of the dirt and smell. Medication to get rid of parasites. Food and water, because all were thin and dehydrated.

I called Critters to get an update on how the rabbits are doing. Happily, one has already found a new home, and six others are now up for adoption. The bunny with the missing ear is still undergoing some treatment, as it also was found to be missing two feet.

With Easter coming, the Critters staff will be making doubly sure that each of these remaining rabbits will be going to a forever home, not just a home where the people think pet bunnies make good Easter basket gifts. Domestic rabbits live 10 years or more.

They, like all pets, require a significant commitment and aren’t the sort of thing you can just neglect or toss out after a few weeks.

If you know of someone who’s thinking of acquiring a pet rabbit, make sure they know they’re responsible for that pet for its entire life, not just until the thrill wears off.

And if you hear of someone who’s going to take his or her bunny and “set it free,” step in and share what you know.

Great outdoor spaces like Ferson Creek Fen are absolutely wonderful destinations for taking in the sights and sounds of spring. But they make absolutely awful homes for pets.

With temperatures finally on the rise – well, until Monday anyway – the signs of spring are all around.

Robins singing territory songs. Wildflowers poking up through the soil. A worm on the sidewalk.

You’d think – as I did – that all these welcome indicators, wrapped up in a nice, 600-word package, would make for an enjoyable, nature-themed reading experience. There I was, typing away, waxing elegant on midge hatches and the first bee of spring, when, suddenly, a completely different topic popped up.

Or maybe I should say hopped up.

Not to me, but to Tim Timberlake, one of the St. Charles Park District’s park safety officers.

Tim had just started his shift Sunday when he received a call from a resident reporting rabbits at Ferson Creek Fen. That would be well and good, if the rabbits were eastern cottontails, Sylvilagus floridanus, our area’s native lagomorphs. But no, these were domestic rabbits.

Or, as Tim put it, “Bunnies. A whole box of ‘em.”

Eight, to be exact.

When Tim arrived on the scene, he found a large box on its side, with seven young rabbits huddled inside and the eighth hopping timidly around in the grass. Although they were dirty, and one was missing an ear, Tim could tell that these animals bore little resemblance to the graybrown wild cottontails that populate our preserves and parks, yards and gardens.

Some were black and white, some were gray, one was white and brown. All of them, Tim noted, were really cute, and horribly out of place.

It might be tempting to think, as perhaps the person who left them did, that pet

Trial testimony revealed Schmidt likely had a seizure just before the crash. Andrew Ta, a board-certified neurologist at Midwest Neurology in DeKalb, diagnosed her with a seizure condition in April 2007 and was comfortable with her driving, a factor DeKalb County Judge Robbin Stuckert said factored heavily in her not guilty verdict after a trial that spanned months.

epilepsy conditions. According to the Epilepsy Foundation, Illinois does neither.

In her letter, Schmidt said she had started many letters to the families during the three years the criminal case was pending, but never sent them.

“I know the pain of losing dear friends, friends’ children and my own parents, but I can’t imagine the anguish of losing a child you have loved and raised,” Schmidt wrote. “When you saw me sitting silently at the courthouse, it was not because I did not want to come apologize to you, but because of my attorney’s instruction. I tried to stay calm and pay attention, but I felt I was being cold and rude, not the way I was raised to behave.”

SYCAMORE – A week after she was acquitted of reckless homicide, Patricia Schmidt apologized to the families of the 21-year-olds killed in the February 2011 crash in a letter to the Daily Chronicle.

Schmidt, 49, of Sycamore, said she prayed daily for Tim Getzelman and Lexi Weber, who died after Schmidt’s truck blew a red light at Route 23 and Peace Road and smashed into the Pontiac Grand Am that Getzelman was driving. She said her defense attorney instructed her not to talk with the couple’s families.

“Starting the evening of Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, I cried for the two young people who died in the accident, whose names I did not yet know,” Schmidt wrote. “I asked my attorney repeatedly if I could talk to someone in the young people’s families. Each time I was told: ‘absolutely not!’

“Please understand that in all my years, I have never had anything even close to this happen.”

Getzelman’s and Weber’s families acknowledged her letter, including her promise not to drive again, and said they would continue working to change state laws on driving with a seizure disorder.

Lexi Weber wanted to become a teacher and supported Feed’em Soup, a nonprofit organization that now has a children’s section called Lexi’s Corner in her honor. Tim Getzelman had earned his basic EMT license and was hired as an intern by the Sycamore Fire Department in September 2008.

For the Weber and Getzelman families, though, the public apology rang hollow. They said Schmidt still wasn’t taking personal responsibility for her actions by citing her attorney.

“It has taken 1,146 days for Patricia Schmidt to issue an apology for causing the deaths of our children,” the families’ statement read. “From the evening of Feb. 21, 2011, never once has she reached out to our families to express her sympathy or remorse. Instead, she chose to issue a public apology, thus drawing attention to herself.”

Defense attorney Matthew Haiduk, who has offices in Crystal Lake and Geneva, said attorneys commonly advise their clients not to talk with victims’ families or apologize because prosecutors could use their words against them. Prosecutors could say an apology is a sign that one knows they are guilty.

“If you’re sorry about something, it’s because you know you caused harm,” Haiduk said. “... The reality is that most of the time they are horribly remorseful, but strategically it’s a bad idea to say anything.”

K. Hollis celebrates store’s anniversary

They opened the store April 5, 2005. On Friday, Hollis and his wife celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary.

“It so happens the store anniversary and our wedding anniversary coincide,” Rob Hollis said.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, the store will celebrate its ninth anniversary at 147 S. Randall Road in Batavia. The event will feature raffle prizes every hour along with food and refreshments.

The expansion allowed the owners to spread out their merchandise and add more lines of jewelry.

Along with carrying new jewelry, K. Hollis also turns old jewelry into new items.

“We’ve been doing more of that these days,” he said.

“Karen is probably doing two or three of these a day. People might have an emotional attachment to a ring or another piece of jewelry. We just turn it into something new.”

The store tries to serve its customers as best it can, Hollis said, adding, “we want to make sure you are getting what you want.”

Fresh start on First St. The third phase of the longplanned First Street Redevelopment project in St. Charles will have a fresh start.

On Monday, St. Charles aldermen said no to a 10th extension to First Street Development LLC and SMN Development LLC for their parts of the project.

That is an appropriate action.

The project began in 2006, and extensions have been granted since 2008. The vision has been there for more than a decade, with the hopes of establishing an area for living, working, dining and shopping. The vision still can come to fruition, but planning must start over.

Much has changed in recent years. The city has new leadership in place. The economy has undergone changes, and what made sense for First Street years ago might not make as much sense now.

Much discussion has taken place, and while it’s unrealistic to expect all residents to agree on the vision, it’s important that the vision is one that is inspiring and solid.

First Street, along the Fox River, is a prime location in St. Charles.

First Street LLC has 60 days to come back and try to fulfill its part of the development, City Administrator Mark Koenen said this week.

He said if there was no response, the city would seek out other interested groups. Koenen said the city would be looking for developers.

The project has been underway for a long time, and it’s understandable that officials continued to issue extensions throughout the years.

But deadlines on some level should be respected.

A strong project can still be developed, but a re-evaluation is needed. That can be a positive thing. Excitement exists over the future of the east side of town – with new owners in place for the Charlestowne Mall and Pheasant Run Resort.

The future of the downtown area can generate excitement, too.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Not the effect you hope for To the Editor: I have a question for the businesses putting up red slash no gun signs. What is your intent by doing this?

I assume it is primarily to keep guns out. I assure you there have been many people in your establishment that you didn’t know had a gun strapped on. You have shopped next to them at the grocery store, and they were pumping gas at the same time you and your family sat in the car. These people never cared about the

law prohibiting this before, and a sign will have little effect on their behavior now.

Let me rephrase that. It will not have the effect you hope for. Those of us who are law abiding, will remove our gun before coming in, out of respect for your decision. But for those previously mentioned, the sign will be seen as a place where no defense from them is possible. The same people who entered unlawfully before will continue to carry illegally in your establishment. Remember, when you need help in seconds, the police are only minutes

away.

It will be difficult to spend my time or money in a business where victimhood is advertised. It would seem that some rights are unalienable, but others can be trampled. I see this form of selective observance increasing in our country. All of our constitutionally granted rights need to be respected, or someday those you hold near and dear may be threatened.

8SOUND OFF This is in regard to the people in St. Charles who don’t like chickens in their neighborhood. Then move to our neighborhood. In the last three years, I’ll bet eight big, barking dogs have moved into the neighborhood. It’s just horrible. Why don’t people keep big dogs out of town and little dogs in town? Chickens belong on farms I agree about the backyard chickens. I cannot see it. That belongs on a farm.

I would like to know if there is a new law in Illinois regarding stop signs. I always thought that if you came up to a stop sign, you had to come to a full stop. I see so many drivers on the roads and in parking lots who disregard stop signs totally. What has happened? Doesn’t anyone believe in a stop sign anymore? No wonder there are so many accidents.

I recently went to the Geneva library to make copies. When I was standing at the copier and reading directions, one of the women behind the desk asked me if I had punched such-andsuch a button. I told her I just did. She turned to the other woman behind the counter and commented, loud enough for me to hear, that people should take a class before using the copier.

I am just appalled I’m calling about the 5 percent raises that Kane County gave, and I just don’t understand that, just because somebody else in another county is making more than they are. When I was working, you always had to prove that you were worthy of a raise. You got a raise on that merit, not just because someone in another area was making more than you were. ST. CHARLES – Apartment residents in St. Charles are encouraged to contact the city’s police department or code enforcement officer with concerns about their complex, the St. Charles Police Department said in a news release issued Friday.

Suspicious activity in or around an apartment complex can be reported to police at 630-377-4435 or 911 or to code enforcement officer Rob Surratt at 630-377-4406.

Surratt works with citizens to resolve issues that affect the quality of life in St. Charles, including violations of the zoning ordinance and property maintenance code.

Enforcement is accomplished by responding to cit-

izen complaints.

Common issues that can be addressed are illegal signs; junk vehicles or parts stored outside; accumulation of garbage; lack of maintenance on fences, doors and windows; failure to obtain a permit; pet waste; and too many pets.

Authorities should be immediately notified of violations so the issue can be addressed properly.

The police department already works with apartment managers in that it provides training and code enforcement tips to assist the managers with their renters and facilities.

Meetings between the two aim to prevent future issues, whether they stem from apartment residents, vagrants or criminal activity.

Pitcher picks off 4 Neuqua batters at 1st

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North junior Cory Wright didn’t like allowing so many baserunners Friday against Neuqua Valley but the left-handed pitcher sure channeled his frustration constructively.

Wright picked off a whopping four Neuqua Valley runners at first base – one in each of the first four innings – to minimize the Wildcats’ threats in a 4-2, Upstate Eight Conference crossover win for the North Stars.

North coach Todd Genke said Wright’s pickoff move is among the slickest he’s seen, comparing it to the move of former North ace and Nebraska recruit Zach Hirsch.

“I worked on it a lot when I was younger, and it just kind of stuck,” Wright said.

“It’s been the same move ever since I was 12, 13 years old.”

Wright’s move is crafty enough that it’s not unusual for him to catch a runner or two napping, but this was a sight to behold.

“Usually when I pitch that usually happens, I’ll get one or two, but I guess they didn’t really make that big of an adjustment, and I took advantage of it, so that was good,” Wright said.

Neuqua outhit North, 106, but was nowhere near as efficient at moving runners along, with Wright’s quartet of pickoffs factoring in heavily.

“He shuts down the running game because they can’t get a lead, and even when they do get a lead, he picks them off,” Genke said.

“And they’re a good running team. They’ve got some speed, and he just shut them down. That’s a phenomenal

Playing in front of a large, vocal student section, North (8-1, 3-0 UEC River) faced a 2-0 deficit after the top of the first but took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Drawant had two doubles – similarly struck, hooking line drives down the leftfield line – plus a walk in his three at-bats. He’s been happy with his offensive start to the spring.

“I’ve been working hard with my coaches, [assistant coach Brett Wikierak] has been a big part of that, my hitting coach, Bobby Roan,

has been a big part of that in the offseason,” Drawant said. “I’ve just been working hard on my swing, loading early and everything like that.”

Genke said Drawant presents a pleasant problem when devising North’s batting order.

“He’s a real tough person to put in the lineup as far as where to put him because he’s our fastest kid and you’d really like to put him at the top of the lineup, but we’ve moved him kind of in the middle, in the 5-hole now, where he’s driving in runs,” Genke said. “He’s really hitting the snot out of the ball, and he’s very comfortable there.”

The North Stars added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth when right fielder Anthony Lambert

singled to center, scoring pinch-runner Jake Jozefowicz.

Neuqua (2-6, 1-2 UEC Valley) managed a pair of twoout singles off Wright (1-0) in the top of the fifth but couldn’t take advantage, and the Kansas State recruit held the Wildcats hitless in the final two innings.

The North Stars are enjoying an excellent start to the season.

“We had a down year last year, and I challenged these guys all offseason to come back out and let’s get back up to the top of the conference where we think we belong, and they’ve stepped up to the challenge,” Genke said. “We really got after it in the weightroom this fall and winter, and it’s made a huge difference just the way they’re swinging the bats.”

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com SOUTH ELGIN – St. Charles North softball coach Tom Poulin’s decision to pitch to South Elgin cleanup hitter Alyssa Buddle instead of walking her when she led off the bottom of the fourth inning ended up being a good strategy, but not for the reason the coach intended during Friday’s game.

Buddle lofted an 0-2 Sabrina Rabin pitch over the center field fence for a home run to break a scoreless tie.

The homer also seemed to wake up North’s offense, which responded with 11 runs during the North Stars’ next two at-bats as North trounced the Storm, 11-1, in six innings in an Upstate Eight Conference crossover game.

“I knew she was a good hitter so anything I gave her she would hit it but I think [the home run] definitely fueled us,” Rabin said.

“I didn’t want to walk the leadoff hitter,” Poulin said.

“It’s a zero-zero game, and then they bunt her over and she’s a single away from scoring.”

North (5-2, 1-2 UEC River) immediately went to work to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning when leadoff batter Andrea Beal hit a triple that bounced on the right-field foul line for the team’s first extra base hit of the game.

“I actually didn’t see it,” Beal said. “When I came into the dugout and asked my teammates, they said that was directly on the line and bounced foul.”

Rabin, the next batter, hit the first pitch from South Elgin (4-3, 1-2 UEC Valley) start-

ing pitcher Paige Allen over the infield, playing in for a bunt, into right-center for another triple, scoring Beal with North’s first run.

Second baseman Kaitlyn Waslawski followed with a double that scored Rabin.

Waslawski crossed the plate three batters later on Alex Millett’s single.

The North Stars put the game away in the sixth inning when it sent 14 batters to the plate.

Facing three different pitchers, North scored eight runs on eight hits, a walk and two Storm errors.

South Elgin upset St. Charles North in an IHSA Class 4A regional final last year.

“I told the team we had to concentrate on getting a quality win against a quality team, and I was hoping that would be today,” said firstyear South Elgin coach Stephanie Katzenberger. “The first four innings it looked like it would be a great game and then they started smacking the ball around.”

Rabin struck out six, walked one and allowed five hits to earn the win. The senior right-hander also was 3 for 4 at the plate, collecting two singles in the sixth to go along with her fifth-inning triple.

Allen, who pitched through the fifth inning, was pegged for the loss.

“Overall we did well in all three phases. We ran the bases well, we hit and we defended,” Poulin said. “I thought we played solid defense.

We’ve been kicking it around a little bit lately which is uncharacteristic for us but today we made the plays we needed to make.”

Cougars ‘jell together,’ take control

Blue state Cougars third baseman Jordan Hankins grew up in Wentzville, Mo., about 40 minutes west of St. Louis. On Friday, he pondered the homefront a little more than usual as his boyhood Cardinals prepared to host the opener of a threegame series against the Cougars’ parent team, the Cubs.

“A lot of friends and family back home say they like the Cardinals but they’ll always be rooting for Jordan, though,” Hankins said. “It’s a love-hate thing, but I love the Cubs now.”

Left-handed reliever Nathan Dorris, a Carbondale native, grew up pulling for the Cardinals before traveling to a Cubs game at Wrigley Field as a middle-schooler. He immediately grew enamored of The Friendly Confines and switched his allegiances to what he and friends dubbed “the dark side.”

Infielder/designated hitter Danny Canela played west of metro St. Louis for the independent River City Rascals last season and attended a game at Busch Stadium with his host family.

“Very nice place,” Canela said.

Golfing one out Manager Mark Johnson hails from Georgia, which gains the attention of the golfing world around this time each year when Augusta National hosts The Masters.

Johnson has driven past the iconic course but never set foot on the grounds.

“A real special event. A lot of tradition and special things have happened there,” he said. “I definitely watch it when I can.”

With the Cougars playing 1 p.m. matinees today and Sunday, Johnson wouldn’t mind if the field saved the best drama for the final holes.

The Cougars navigated a wild stretch in the first two innings of Friday’s series opener against Lake County before seizing control in a 6-4 win at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

It’s still early in most players’ first full professional seasons, but the vibes surrounding the Cougars (5-3) only grow after nights like these.

“We’re really laid back,” third baseman Jordan Hankins said, “but I think we’re ready to go play and play hard, too.”

That mindset showed in just about every facet against Lake County (4-4), which tagged Cougars starter Daury Torrez for three home runs but did little against the bullpen.

Torrez still notched his first victory above Rookie ball, scattering seven hits and four runs in 5⅓ innings.

Lefty Nathan Dorris, a Midwest League All-Star last season, followed with his third successive scoreless appearance to begin 2014, yielding one hit and striking out three in 2⅔ innings.

“We can’t score runs when we’re on defense, so the quicker we can get these guys back in the dugout, get these guys in the batter’s box,” Dorris said. “We’ve got a good group of hitters,

Zack Godley struck out the side in a perfect ninth for his first professional save.

“The first thing you’ve got to do at the start of any season is make sure you go in and execute pitches, locate them Zack Godley where you want them to be,” Godley said. “That way, you can get ahead in counts and work the way you want to do it.”

Led by right fielder Yasiel Balaguert, a nondrafted free agent of the parent Cubs in 2011, the offense remains equally aggressive.

Balaguert tripled among his three hits while driving in two runs. His 12 hits and nine RBIs both are challenging for the league lead.

After adding some bulk in the offseason, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Cuban spent most of spring training with the Cubs’ Advanced-A Daytona group.

Struggles came in spots,

but haven’t resurfaced since the team left Arizona.

“He’s swinging the bat good now,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson grinned. “That’s all we’re worried about.”

Shortstop Carlos Penalver (three hits), Hankins (two) and catcher Ben Carhart (two RBIs) also propelled the attack.

Armed with their first winning streak of the season, the Cougars will look to take their second home series in as many tries today.

“We really jell together really good,” Hankins said, “and I think that’s how we’re going to get a lot of our success this year.”

Young managers catching on GENEVA – Cougars manager Mark Johnson turns 39 at season’s end, an age that seems young for someone leading a baseball team until you realize most of his players are a generation younger.

This week at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, Johnson exchanged lineups and strategies with Fort Wayne counterpart Michael Collins, 29. The perspective reset.

The men met at home plate before three games, but their paths before then followed far different routes.

Johnson is a former Major League catcher and first-round draft pick, beginning his career with the White Sox. Collins, an Australian, played the same position in the Angels and Padres systems for 10 seasons, appearing in just eight games at Triple-A. “You know, I started young. I signed at 16, left home, so I was forced to grow up somewhat there,” Collins said. “I’ve traveled the world, fortunately, all through baseball. So I don’t feel old, that’s not right, but definitely maybe

VIEWS Kevin Druley slightly more seasoned or experienced than my years, I guess.”

Like the players he’s responsible for molding, Collins is in the larval stages of any potential climb to the big leagues. Should he realize the dream he missed as a player, he would not set any standard for the youngest in his position.

Cleveland Indians icon Lou Boudreau started his time with the club at 24, while Bucky Harris guided the Washington Senators to the 1924 World Series title at 27. They aren’t the only young guns in baseball’s annals, which include former interim New York Yankees manager Roger Peckinpaugh, who was 23 in 1914.

“That’s a lot to put on somebody’s plate at 29, but, you know, there’s a lot

of guys back in the day that managed earlier than that,” Johnson said. “So it’s all [relative].”

In today’s majors, first-time managers have enjoyed unprecedented success. Two met in last season’s World Series, as Boston and John Farrell defeated Mike Matheny and St. Louis.

Matheny, like Collins and Johnson, was a catcher, which goes a long way no matter someone’s age or hometown.

“I think as a catcher, you’re involved in every play. You’re forced – if you want to be good at it, anyways – to learn the game. Learn all the plays, learn all the strategic elements, I guess you could call it,” Collins said.

“You get a little more insight versus maybe an infielder or an outfielder.

You learn a little bit quicker and a little bit more about the game.”

Star watch The Cougars will miss Lake County righthander Dace Kime in this weekend’s series, a reality that has its ups and downs. While Kime was a third-round pick of the parent Cleveland Indians last June, he has struggled to a 17.05 ERA in his first two starts of 2014, allowing 14 earned runs in 6⅓ innings.

Noteworthy Cougars hitting coach Tom Beyers managed Short-A Salem (Ore.) in the Dodgers organization with former Cubs right-hander Burt Hooton as his pitching coach from 1988 to 1989. Hooton, who now serves Fort Wayne in the same capacity, fondly recalled his friendship with Beyers when the TinCaps visited Fifth Third Bank Ballpark this week. “Our families got pretty close there,” Hooton said. ... Infielder Danny Canela, the independent Frontier League’s Rookie of the Year last season, homered in his first affiliated at-bat April 5 at Quad Cities. The parent Cubs signed him as a nondrafted free agent in September. ... After leading the Midwest League with 64 stolen bases in 2013, Fort Wayne center fielder Mallex Smith had five more steals in three games against the Cougars. ... Knights’ quarterback David holds hope for D-I opportunity options in the aftermath of his Nov. 1 ACL surgery, the 6-foot-1, 280-pound Thielk set his sights squarely on the weightroom. His devotion paid off Saturday.

Thielk said he was one of only a handful of teenagers in the competition at Wisconsin Dells, which primarily consisted of grown men. Thielk said he wasn’t flustered by being so much younger than most of the competitors.

“I figured I’m just there, so I’ll try to do the best I can do,” Thielk said. “I didn’t [worry about the older lifters], and they were pretty nice. … They were helping me because they heard it was my first competition. They thought I was older than I was.”

Thielk called weightlifting “probably my favorite thing to do,” saying his older brother, Nick, and Kaneland senior offensive lineman Joe Komel – a Central Michigan recruit – helped inspire his passion for bulking up.

“They need to show up more and show up consistently,” Thielk said.

Kaneland senior quarterback Drew David said it’s apparent Thielk is “pretty proud” of his record-setting lift, but said Thielk hasn’t been boasting too much.

“Ever since the first time

I’ve seen him in the weightroom, he’s a tank,” David said. “He was a junior this year and he was definitely one of our strongest guys we had on the team. He’s really impressive. I’m not surprised to hear any of that.”

Thielk missed the entire wrestling season while recovering from his ACL tear but hopes to be medically cleared in time for most of the outdoor track and field season.

He said he likely will participate in the same weightlifting competition in Wisconsin next year, and preliminary has set a 425-pound lift as his goal.

David zeroing in on college options: David, the Knights’ three-year starter at quarterback, remains uncertain of his college plans, but is holding out hope for a walkon opportunity at a Division I, Football Championship Subdivision program.

“For me, I kind of wanted to try and do something different, kind of try and catch lighting in a bottle, I guess,” David said. “… You hear all kinds of crazy stories. It’s something I just wanted to kind of try.”

It was only a couple years ago that Kaneland junior Zack Thielk was close to ground zero in the weightroom.

“My freshman year, I could only bench like 95 pounds,” Thielk recalled. “… I didn’t get really strong until sophomore year, and then this year after I tore my ACL, my upper body just got really strong. I just worked on my upper body for most of the time until I could squat again.”

Thielk, a three-sport athlete from Sugar Grove, set an Illinois record for 16-17year olds last Saturday at the World Cup Bench Press and Dead Lift Championships in Wisconsin Dells. Thielk was credited with a 347-pound bench press, though he said he actually maxed out at 370 on his final attempt, but it did not count since he was shooting for 380.

Thielk is an offensive lineman in Kaneland’s football program as well as a heavyweight wrestler and track and field thrower. Thielk was the football team’s starting center until he suffered a season-ending ACL tear in the Knights’ Week 6 win against DeKalb.

St. Charles resident and local golf pro Rick Bell gained teaching certification in February with the PGA of America, becoming one of a small minority of certified pros in the state.

Bell is no stranger to the Tri-Cities golf scene, having spent parts of his extensive career working at Pottawatomie, Pheasant Run and, currently, Mill Creek. Bell has worked at several other courses throughout northern Illinois over the years, now splitting his instructional time between Mill Creek and Water’s Edge Golf Club in Worth. In this week’s Weekend Chit-chat with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab, Bell – who is next pursuing master professional status – discusses his recent certification, the key to being an effective golf pro and more.

The following is an edited transcript:

How big of a moment in your golf career was attaining your certification?

I would say it was the third most important thing. … Probably No. 1 was when I got my membership in the PGA, just Class A status, got my apprenticeship out of the way. … No. 2 was the work that I started and continued working with children with disabilities. I’ve been a longtime supporter of Special Olympics. When I was working up in Elgin, we got started working with kids with disabilities, doing free clinics for the kids. … I wanted to do whatever I could to if nothing else just show them a good time.

Is it more typical for someone to come to you and say ‘Hey, I need to rebuild my swing from scratch’ or more common that someone has a more specific area that they want to troubleshoot?

The second. We get beginners, and we teach them not only privately but we teach them in group sessions as well, but if you were to come to me, there are several questions I need to ask you, not only just to break the ice, but I need to know where you’re coming from. One of the questions I would ask is ‘Why are you here? Why are you coming to see me?’

And they usually start out by saying ‘Well, I hit my drives to the right’ or ‘I slice

Weekend Chit-chat with GOLF PRO RICK BELL the ball, and I’d like to get that under control.’ But then they’ll say ‘My short game’s a little bit weak, too,’ and then pretty soon they’ve got this whole litany of things that they’ve rattled off, so they’re not really focused in on one thing. But generally it’s not the case where someone comes up to me and says ‘I’ve never played before and I want to learn to play.’

There are other times when people who do play say ‘You know, I’ve been at this for 25 years and I’m no better than I was and I need some help, and I’ll do whatever you tell me to.’ Those are the people you love to have because you know you can take a little longer-term approach toward their learning rather than just putting a Band-Aid on them, a quick fix.

A lot of students come in and maybe they shoot 105, and they say ‘If I can just break 100, I’d be happy.’

Well, that’s going to make them happy for a short while, but then they’re going to want to break 90. So score is important to some people but now you have to really get involved in teaching them not to think about score, and that’s very difficult. Occasionally you hear about people, whether they’re younger golfers or whatever age, experiencing burnout, having to step away for a while, and maybe they end up getting back in it later. With golf being a profession and a scholarly activity for you, have you experienced burnout?

Yeah, I think everybody kind of has ups and downs.

Sometimes, I’d say as often

as not, they kind of come and go weekly. But I had a problem that I had to get over because the words “golf professional” follow my name. I was guilty for a long time of – everybody that I played with thought I was going to go out and shoot a 67 every time I walked on the golf course, so I couldn’t enjoy myself and just go out and play golf, and if I shot 79, so what? I passed my playing ability test. I know at some point or another I can play, I don’t have to prove it again, why can’t I just go out and enjoy myself? It was hard for me. I shot a lot of big scores when I went out … One of my favorite phrases is “Golf is a game, and games are supposed to be fun.” And it just wasn’t fun. And so I got out of the business for basically three years and sold pianos.

Aside from having the actual golf acumen, what characteristic would you say is most important for a golf instructor – patience, or something else?

Two things – learning theory and patience. In any exchange of information between a student and a teacher, there are two sides.

There’s the teacher who has knowledge and information that he imparts to the student, but the student has to absorb that and understand it. Here’s where a lot of amateurs and lesser teachers, people who are maybe even golf professionals who happen to teach some as well as amateurs who might have a pretty good eye, what they don’t really understand and know enough about is it’s far more important what you understand than what I tell you. You have to really understand learning theory and how people learn if you’re going to be a really effective teacher.

MAPLE PARK – One bad inning was the difference in the Kaneland softball team’s contest against Marengo on Friday afternoon.

Errors and walks were a major issue for the Knights as Marengo scored four runs in the top of the third inning without a hit, and eventually squeezed out a 7-4 victory.

“Any time you give a team five or six outs in an inning, you are going to pay for it most of the time. We paid for it today,” Kaneland coach Brian Willis said. “There were six runs that were unearned and we should have been able to cut those off at the plate.”

All four runs were assigned to Kaneland starting pitcher Courtney Davis.

She walked three batters in the inning before being replaced with the bases loaded and one run already in.

Anissa Becker relieved Davis.

The first batter Becker faced hit a ground ball to Morgan Weber. The ball got by the second baseman, and two more runs scored. Weber made up for the error in the bottom of the fourth. Her two-run home run with one out capped a four-run rally to tie the score.

The Knights mustered five hits on the afternoon. Paige Kuefler went 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Meg Cohrs finished with a double and an RBI.

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Dom Adduci sought a highly regarded academic school that played in a competitive, Division I conference, preferably somewhat close to home.

Drake met each of those criteria for the St. Charles East senior, and on Friday, Adduci verbally committed to play college basketball for the Bulldogs.

“People have said you’ll know the school that’s the right fit for you when you go,” Adduci said. “I just got that feeling. I visited Drake over spring break and just got that feeling from the coaching staff down to the faculty down to the people on the basketball team now. … I just fell in love with it.”

Adduci said Drake will offer some scholarship money and “see where that goes from there.” The 6-foot point guard last month capped his three-year run as a key cog in the Saints’ backcourt after transferring from Wheaton Academy.

Adduci informed Drake assistant coach Todd Townsend of his decision Friday evening. Adduci said he also considered fellow D-I programs Loyola and California-Davis as well as D-II Lewis University.

Located in Des Moines, Iowa, Drake is coming off a 15-16 season in its first year under coach Ray Giacoletti, a former assistant at Gonzaga. The Bulldogs are trying to work their way up the pecking order in a Missouri Valley Conference headlined in recent seasons by national powerhouse Wichita State.

“They play good teams night in, night out,” Adduci said. “The MVC is really known as one of the best mid-major conferences around, and that definitely was something exciting, too. I want to try to play the best competition possible and take my game to the next level. To do that, you have to play against better players day in and day out, and that’s something really exciting to me.”

Adduci overcame injury adversity each of the past two seasons to lead East in scoring, including a 19.2 scoring average as a senior. He credited Dr. Eric Hestrup, player development coach Jeff Pagliocca and Saints coach Pat Woods for positioning him to reach his childhood dream of playing D-I ball.

“All those guys have really been beneficial to me to help me in one way, shape or form, and I wouldn’t be here without them,” he said.

The St. Charles North varsity lacrosse team started strong Thursday against Glenbard West only to fall 14-13 in double overtime.

North struck first when Dean McBride took a Cameron MacKenzie pass and beat the goalie. Later in the quarter, McBride found Keegan Wells with a pass in the crease and he ripped a quick shot for a 2-1 lead. MacKenzie pushed the score to 3-1 when he dodged a defender and his shot found the back of the net.

Jud Huxtable scored the last goal of the quarter after taking a Zach Behrens pass and shooting from in close.

Most of the second quarter belonged to Glenbard West, which rattled off 6 straight goals and looked like it might run away after taking an 8-4 lead with less than three minutes to play in the half. North cut into the lead when Huxtable rolled the cage and finished to make it 8-5. With just 16 seconds left in the half, Connor Zounis had his shot go past the goalie. North wasn’t done yet as Huxtable finished his first-half hat trick on a quick sprint to the net, beating the goalie with three seconds left to make the halftime score 8-7.

The third quarter was back and forth.

West scored first followed by a goal by Wells off a pass from Huxtable. West added two more before Huxtable set up Eric Koppang for a quick shot to make the score 11-9. West scored again, but North managed two goals in the final 16 seconds. Connor Jones fired a one timer from the crease off another Huxtable feed, and Rich Mix took a Joe Davis pass and powered a shot past the goalie with four seconds remaing in the quarter and North was within one, 12-11.

The fourth quarter and the two overtime periods were pure excitement and included tough determined play on both sides. The North defense, led by Zach Woeste, Dustin Sullens and Austin Cohen, buckled down. Mix was all over the field from the LSM position. Carter O’Brien made some stellar saves down the stretch to keep his team in it and was also supported by Connor Evans and Brett Husar.

North knotted the score at 12 when MacKenzie cranked a side-winder shot off a Koppang pass. North took the lead less than a minute later when Koppang took a Huxtable pass and ripped a shot from the right wing. West tied the score at 13-13 late in the fourth to force OT. West scored to take the 14-13 win in double overtime.

Pets catch case of spring fever Seems my wannabe wild thing, Posey (our aging Maine Coon kitty), has caught spring fever. Which is awesome, because what I really relish doing at 9:30 on a Saturday night is a jog around the neighborhood with my big red dog. You know, as we track Posey, our “pulleeeeselet-meoooowt!” indoor cat. So, maybe jog is a strong word, but you get my point. (And besides, I’d been sound asleep with a book in my lap mere minutes before the missing-cat-alarm sounded last Saturday night, after Noah walked in the back door and accidentally left it open, so, yeah, I’m calling it a jog. After all, my heart raced and adrenaline pumped. Oh, and my holey pajama bottoms drooped, so thank God it was dark. You’d thank God, too, if you’d seen them and the rest of my hastily assembled getup and crazy bed-head – but I digress.)

As I scrambled into my winter coat (spring fever, my foot), stuffed my crazy hair into my favorite baseball cap (It’s periwinkle and bears the quote “Women who beha-- rarely make history.”

I rescued it from a discount bin since it was missing a few letters.

I love it!) and harnessed Jake, because Lord knows the big red dog was not about to be left out of the search party.

I shouted to the kids to, “Go check Jackson’s house!”

Jackson, the sweet black lab Holly cares for after school, lives down the block. And a few years ago, the last time Posey disappeared, we found him perched on Jackson’s steps, a huge cat-grin on his furry face.

Oddly enough, he was there this time, too – but not on the steps.

Instead – this time – he was crouched in the shadows behind Jackson’s garage, watching the flames dance in a neighbor’s nearby fire pit during the neighbor’s date-in-progress.

Like I said, spring fever. But

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose we didn’t spot Posey there for more than half-an-hour, because while the kids sprinted around the neighborhood with their flashlights and Todd drove around in his car, I strolled past the sweet scene with Jake – all peaceful-like in my crazy-lady pajamas – but I just couldn’t bring myself to interrupt their moment. (Fine, so I didn’t want to re-introduce myself to my sweet, newish neighbor looking like a spaz. I do have my pride.

Whatever.)

Besides, my adrenaline rush was just getting started. Why waste a good rush on a solid hunch?

So, I kept going up the sidewalk. And down the other side.

Then around the corner, across the street and into another neighbor’s backyard, where Jake and I spotted something moving in the dark bushes. I could tell it was a cat. But it was far leaner than Posey so I realized that it must be Viktor, another neighbor’s outdoor cat, for whom Holly had been pet-sitting.

She was busy searching for Posey in his yard, so I called her over to retrieve Viktor and put him inside since Viktor, a.k.a. the assassin (sweetest kitty ever, but, true to his hunter-nature, he does enjoy a tasty critter every now and then), has sort of a contentious relationship with Posey. (They met, once, through a screen door, and since then dear Viktor has comically flaunted his outdoor status whenever he sees Posey smoldering behind a window.)

Meanwhile, Noah searched the adjacent backyards. Wearing his black sweatshirt with the hood up, all MacGyver-like, he

made me nervous.

“Seriously, man, put your hood down. You look like a hoodlum. You don’t wanna get shot,” I said, though I was admittedly far scarier-looking as I trespassed through our other neighbor’s yard (you know, that one neighbor I’ve not yet conversed with, who’s lived here for over five years and was not at home on this fine spring evening.)

Holly put the assassin inside, came over, and stoically searched the perimeter of the yard herself where Viktor had been lurking.

Poor thing; she was beside herself. Neither of us mentioned it, but we both knew we were looking for a body. Not finding one we finally returned to Jackson’s house, where flames from his neighbor’s fire-pit lit up the night.

“Have you seen a gray cat?” I called to the neighbor, over the fence.

“Yeah, there’s one, right there, with a white face,” she replied, pointing.

“That’s him!” I said, laughing, as Posey took off across the yard and made Holly chase him all the way home.

I did not run. Bad things happen when I run. With as much dignity as I could muster, though, I thanked my neighbor and strolled with Mr. Jake back around the block to where Noah was waiting, his arms raised in victory.

He’d been redeemed.

“Pre-bedtime cardio,” he called it, as we headed back inside and loved on Mr. Posey.

Yeah, OK, it was something like that. And to think, we’d not yet gotten around to taking that spring-break hike.

Guess we can check that off the list.

April is the ideal spring month to examine indoor plants and consider repotting.

Refresh houseplants in April

By CATHERINE HARRINGTON editorial@kcchronicle.com April seems to be the month that stirs gardeners from their long winter hiatus – blue skies, melting snow, seed packets, emerging buds and sunny days. All this can happen on one April day!

Then the next day we seem to slip back into late winter, donning jackets and braving low wind chills. It takes a hardy Midwest gardener to survive this yearly transition.

I tend to wait until the last minute to “wake up”

my garden. This year, I shall use my time wisely beginning now, with my houseplants. April is a good time to examine your indoor plants.

Some plants need to be re-potted each year.

If your plant has roots growing through the drainage holes or if the roots are peeking out at the top of the soil, you should consider repotting.

If the soil on the top of the plant looks crusty and has some white residue (salt buildup), you should repot.

• Remove the plant from its current pot and examine the roots. If the roots are growing in a circular pattern, unwind and/or cut them back.

• Place your plant into a larger pot. The new container should be one-half inch larger, in diameter, than the old one.

• Repot at the same depth as before and gently press new soil around the roots leaving room at the top for easy watering.

• Water your newly planted pot.

• Step back and admire your “new” plant!

One easy to grow indoor plant is a Pothos (Epipremnum aureum).

Pothos survives well in low light conditions. I prune mine quite often to keep it bushy and more compact. This

houseplant is easy to propagate by placing a cutting into damp soil.

Another favorite indoor plant is Kalanchoe (K. blossfeldiana). This succulent blooms naturally in the spring.

When the bloom fades, cut off the flowers and let the plant rest with less water.

Both of these plants will soon be moved outside and will thrive throughout the summer.

‘Star Crossed’ an alien Romeo and Juliet

By MELISSA CRAWLEY More Content Now What would happen if aliens crash landed on Earth with the goal of integration instead of colonization? This is the question posed by the new CW series “Star Crossed.”

But this is the CW – home to all shows starring beautiful teenagers – so the real question is, what if an alien boy and a human girl fell in love?

The series is “Romeo and Juliet,” if Romeo was an alien. And it deals with the same basic themes of fate, death, violence and a couple’s struggle against societal institutions that condemn their love.

The difference is that it also depicts the forced segregation of an entire alien race. I find this a much more interesting idea, but it’s not one that “Star Crossed” explores in any depth.

The aliens are called Atrians, and their arrival in small-town planet Earth is met with suspicion that quickly escalates into armed conflict.

They are hunted, captured and placed in an internment camp called the Sector. A young Atrian child

named Roman temporary avoids discovery when he finds refuge in a backyard shed belonging to the family of a 6-year-old girl called Emery. She looks after him, but the authorities find and shoot him as Emery watches.

Ten years later, a group of Atrian teenagers are allowed to enroll in the local high school as a test case for wider alien integration.

Roman (Matt Lanter) and Emery (Aimee Teegarden) discover each other again and their bond makes them easy targets for the community’s mistrust.

You can stop reading right now and decide to just watch the show for its melodramatic “Will their love survive?” storyline, but if your current age doesn’t have the word “teen” in it, you might not make it past the first episode.

Then again, romance is ageless, right? And this scandalous love does involve a very attractive (teen) alien species. This is because all the Atrians look human, except that they have a few tattoos, which begs the question: Couldn’t they just buy some good body makeup and blend right in? They do

have a special plant that has healing properties when mixed with their blood, but they keep this a secret. I guess with the forced segregation, they’re not in a sharing mood.

The show plays with the idea of fitting in. (You think that it’s hard being the new kid in high school? Trying being the alien new kid!) So, bullying is an obvious theme.

The impact of the school integration on the wider adult community adds a few layers to the story. The older Atrians (much less model-like than their offspring) are divided into those who want to be part of human society and those who want to make their human captors pay for a decade of isolation.

Those in power who support the integration plan, both human and Atrian, have agendas that may not be entirely altruistic. The little that “Star Crossed” does offer on the politics of fear goes some way to ensuring that the anxiety of doomed teen love doesn’t completely take over the plot.

Joy of having service dog diminished by attention Dear Abby: I use a service dog, and I’m constantly barraged with requests to pet him. Other people who use service dogs warned me this would happen. Although the ADA does not require him to wear a vest, I bought one for him that reads, “Do Not Pet,” which he wears in public. They ask me anyway!

They also ask what I use the dog for. Sometimes I’m tempted to say, “First, tell me about your medical history and then I’ll tell you mine.”

As excited as I am about how my dog has expanded my life, I do not want to spend my time answering strangers’ questions or hearing about every dog they’ve ever owned.

3. Do not offer the dog food.

5. Do not be offended if the handler refuses to chat about the service dog.

Add strength training for well-rounded exercise regimen Dear Doctor K: I’d like to start strength training, but I have lots of questions. What should I know before I begin?

Dear Reader: Strength-training exercises are those that force your muscles to strain against an opposing force, like a dumbbell or elasticized band. There’s a lot you need to know before you begin. I’ll answer several common questions to help get you on your way. (I’ve put several more strength-training tips on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

• What are “reps” and “sets”?

Most strength-training routines call for lifting and lowering a weight eight to 12 times. These repetitions are called “reps” for short. One exercise repeated eight to 12 times is called one set. A complete workout includes two to four sets of eight to 12 exercises that, combined, exercise all the major muscle groups.

• How often should I strengthtrain? Try to perform a complete strength-training routine two to three times a week.

• How much rest do my muscles need? Allow at least 48 hours for muscles to recover between strength-training workouts. So, if you work out on Monday, wait until Wednesday for another session.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff • What is good form? Good form means aligning your body correctly and moving smoothly through an exercise. Focus on slow, smooth lifts and controlled descents.

• How much weight or resistance should I use? Choose a weight that allows you to do only eight to 12 repetitions. The last one or two reps should be difficult. When you can comfortably perform 12 reps, increase the amount of weight.

• How long should I rest between sets? Rest for about one minute between sets.

• Should I warm up and cool down? Warm up for five to 10 minutes before you exercise, and cool down for five to 10 minutes at the end. Marching in place and gently swinging your arms, or using a treadmill or exercise bike, are excellent ways to warm up.

To cool down, walk slowly until your heart rate and breathing are close to normal. Then do some stretching.

Remember, a well-rounded exercise program includes aerobic,

balance and flexibility exercises, in addition to strength training.

I’ve done aerobic exercises at least five days a week, at least 30 minutes each day, for most of my adult life. I was a skeptic about adding strength training to my exercise program. In part, I was worried that the time I spent with strength training would reduce the amount of time I had to do aerobic exercises.

Several colleagues here at Harvard who are exercise experts convinced me otherwise.

They pointed out that I was going to start losing muscle mass, particularly in my upper body, if I didn’t do strength training.

And that substituting strength training for aerobic exercises did not reduce the cardiovascular benefits of aerobic exercise.

About 10 years ago, I began an every-other-day routine: strength training one day, aerobic exercise the next. I know my upper-body muscle mass has benefited, and I’m convinced I haven’t sacrificed any cardiovascular benefits.

Teenager wants to write advice columns one day Dr. Wallace: I’m a senior female in high school and will be attending Purdue University in the fall.

I have been reading your column ever since I’ve been in high school, and someday I would like to write a newspaper-syndicated column like yours.

Where did you go to college and what inspired you to specialize in advice for teens?

Of course, I wouldn’t start writing my column until after I’ve graduated from Purdue and, of course, until after you retire.

Dear Nameless: When I was an undergraduate student at Knox College, I had no idea that I would eventually write an advice column for teens. While at Knox I majored in sociology because I enjoyed the courses offered and because a superior and supportive professor, Dr. Walter North, was a member of the sociology department. I also enjoyed classes in English and speech.

After I graduated from Knox, I was employed for a few years in the business field, but I soon decided that my future was to be in education. I returned to school, graduated from Northern Illinois University with a Master of Science in Education degree, and began teaching high school English and coaching varsity basketball.

I didn’t start my career as a syndicated columnist until after I had become a high school administrator.

The blend of education and life experiences provided me with the skills and
