had the chance to photograph the Kane County Cougars home opener Tuesday evening at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva.

As I entered the main concourse of the stadium – a few minutes ahead of the crowd gathered at the front gate – the smell of burgers, bratwursts and onions filled the air.

I also noticed a group of diehard baseball fans gathered around the lineup board, updating their personal scorecards before the game got underway.

Ahh! Baseball season is officially upon us, and the weather was beautiful.

Lawmaker apologizes to state representative for comment

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – State Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, accepted Thursday the apology of another representative who appeared to make a racial comment directed at him.

State Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia, D-Aurora, apologized Thursday morning for comments made Wednesday she said were taken out of context and were not aimed at Anthony’s biracial background.

“Representative Chapa LaVia has apologized twice and I take her at her word that she is regretful for her comments, although I wish she would reconsider her unrelenting efforts to dismantle charter schools in Illinois,” Anthony said in a written statement. “Education is the foundation of success for every American student and we should be promoting choice and competition.”

On the floor Wednesday of the House of Representatives, Chapa LaVia appeared to call Anthony, the only ethnic minority Republican in the House, a “half” during debate

on a bill regarding charter schools. Anthony represents much of Grundy County in the state House 75th District.

“Listen to me minorities,” Chapa LaVia said during the debate, according to video posted at CapitolFax.com. “I’m over here because we’re all over on this side, right? What you’ll also find, wait, we have a half, we have a half. So our children that we find that are in the lower percentile, and the highest ability to go up, right, are being denied access to some of these grade schools, because we don’t have the parent engagement we would like.”

LaVia said she didn’t mean for “half” to be in reference to Anthony during her emotionally charged speech, but she was talking about the Democrat half of the House floor.

Durkin accepted Chapa LaVia’s apology, but also spoke about the necessity to maintain respect while serving in the Legislature.

“During the course of every session, we all feel different levels of frustration. ... However, we should never let that frustration ever translate to anything that can be perceived or is personal or hurtful,” Durkin said, according to the video.

Former library director Teske resigns GENEVA – The Geneva Library Board accepted the resignation of Assistant Library Director Matt Teske after more than 90 minutes in a closed session during a special meeting Thursday.

The decision to accept his resignation, effective immediately, was unanimous.

Teske was director for six years, but resigned in Jan-

uary. At the same meeting where the board accepted his resignation, the board majority immediately rehired him as an assistant director.

Teske had taken time off in November and December and had said at the time of his resignation that he had been dealing with depression and anxiety. In his resignation letter, Teske said serving as library director was not a good fit, but he would do better as an assistant director.

Teske also had served as assistant director before becoming director in 2008.

When board president Esther Steel asked for a motion to accept Teske’s resignation, her voice broke briefly from emotion. But after the meeting, board members would not comment about their sudden turnabout.

Board member Bob Shiffler said officials would release a statement today about Teske’s resignation.

Board member Susan Shivers had criticized Teske at a meeting in January when the board voted to hire interim director Marilyn Boria.

“I know it’s going to be painful for some people to hear this, but our director has been on the job six or seven years and either he can get it right by now or he cannot,” Shivers said then.

City talks future of First Street project

Third Street railroad crossing will be closed

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The future of the First Street Redevelopment project was on the minds of several people Thursday.

St. Charles city staff fielded multiple questions about the project during the Downtown St. Charles Partnership’s City Update program.

The event was held Thursday in the City Council Chambers at the St. Charles Municipal Building, 2 E. Main St. The longstanding third phase of the First Street project came to a halt Monday when the St. Charles City Council decided not to grant any more extensions to First Street Development LLC and SMN Development LLC for their parts of the project.

The council previously granted the developers nine extensions to begin construction on the project, which would have included three buildings with residential units, retail space and a parking deck.

“We have the opportunity to look forward. That doesn’t mean people involved in the past can’t share again.”

First Street LLC has a 60day right to cure time frame as part of the agreement to come back and fulfill its part of the development, Koenen said. If there is no response, then the city will have to create a process to seek out other interested groups.

“We don’t have anyone in the wings,” Koenen said,

in response to a question about other builders for First Street. “We are looking for developers.”

Audience members submitted their questions anonymously by writing them down on index cards that were later collected and read out loud. One of the cards had a question about how the city utilized the tax increment finance, or TIF, bonds that have to be repaid by 2027.

The city created a TIF district to help pay for refurbishing the First Street area.

A total of $34 million in TIF bonds were spent for multiple parts, including the plaza adjacent to ZaZa’s Italian Steakhouse, 5 S. 1st St., the First Street angle parking and streetscape additions, land acquisition and utilities, Koenen said.

The First Street Redevelopment project site is bordered by the Fox River and Illinois, First and Main streets in downtown St. Charles.

GENEVA – The Third Street railroad crossing in downtown Geneva will be closed from 6 a.m. Saturday to 3 p.m. Monday so Union Pacific can complete repairs that began last month.

Work will include filling in low spots with gravel and adding asphalt at the drop-offs next to the rail crossing.

Detour signs will be posted for motorists traveling in both directions. Downtown patrons will be able to frequent restaurants, shops and the downtown parking deck. Commuters using

Joining hands around the courthouse More than 150 people help bring attention to child abuse and neglect

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – More than 140 people participated Thursday in Kane County’s 10th Annual Hands Around the Courthouse event to bring attention to child abuse and neglect.

The crowd, which included court-appointed special advocates, or CASAs, members of the Exchange Club of the Tri Cities and attorneys, filled the lobby and part of the second floor of the Kane County Courthouse, 100 S. Third St., Geneva. They held hands for 10 seconds to remember the 104 children in Illinois who died in 2013 as a result of child abuse and neglect.

Among those participating was St. Charles resident Tom Mandik, who came to the event with his wife, Denise, who has been a CASA since 2011. Mandik has attended the event twice before and said it’s an appropriate way to bring awareness to the issue of child abuse.

The Mandiks also appreciated that the event included a swearing-in ceremony for 21 new CASAs that will help children have a voice in court proceedings. The ceremony is usually held in the courthouse

as a standalone event in the evening, said Debra McQuaid, director of advocate education for CASA Kane County.

The organization decided to include the ceremony as part of Thursday’s event to show people that CASAs are part of the solution to end child abuse, McQuaid said.

The new CASAs were warned that they will never feel so frustrated or so helpless for the children as they will at times when their cases move through the court system. The success stories and reuniting children with their families will make the hard times worth it, said Judith Brawka, chief judge of the 16th Judicial Circuit.

“This is the closest you may actually come to saving a life,” she told the volunteers.

Brawka was one of three speakers Thursday, along with CASA Kane County Executive Director Gloria Bunce and Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon. McMahon spoke about the recent effort Bunce came up with to remind the public about reporting abuse.

It all comes back to the slogan of “if you see something, say something,” McMahon said.

Musical lineup for RiverFest announced

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The band that recently won a contest to create a new theme song for the Chicago Cubs will be among those performing at the City of St. Charles RiverFest event in June.

The Modern Day Romeos, a group that won the contest with the song, “Hey, Hey,” will be the featured band at the St. Charles festival at 8 p.m. June 7. Pride of the Fox, the group that produces the event, has released the list of main stage performers. Julie Farris, executive director of Pride of the Fox, said of the Modern Day Romeos, “We’re hoping and keeping our fingers crossed that they will play that song at RiverFest.”

The event takes place June 6 through 8 at 10 locations in St. Charles. The main stage will be at Second and Walnut avenues.

Among other main stage highlights will be the Hillbilly Rockstarz, the group that will perform first, at 6 p.m. June 6. Dirty Dan’s Cool Rockin’ Daddies will follow at 8:30 p.m.

Johnny Maggio will perform a version of the song “In St. Charles,” which last year was recognized as the city’s official song, during his set, which starts at noon June 7.

Also on June 7, the group Evolution, billed as a band that “has evolved from the ashes of Hi Infidelity,” will be on stage at 5:30 p.m. Mac Cartyn’s will perform at 1:30 p.m., and Sonic 7 will play at 3:30 p.m. that day, followed by Evolution and Modern Day Romeos.

On June 8, radio station 103.9-FM will record an episode of a show called “The Garage,” which will feature Chicago-area bands. That takes place at noon. There also will be a bachelor auction at 3:30 p.m. On Tap will perform at 5 p.m., and the group 1 Sam 10, a group that includes two St. Charles police officers, a firefighter and a civilian, will be the final band of the festival at 7 p.m.

“The Garage,” which is a play off the idea that every group gets its start in a garage. There will be question-and-answer sessions, and the groups’ music will be showcased.

“I want people to experience what these bands are doing, what brought them to be, what makes them tick, what goes into the songwriting process,” Wild said.

Farris said festival organizers receive about 300 groups seeking to perform at RiverFest each year. She said the process can be difficult because “there are so many good bands.” She said that “this year, we have more genres represented than ever before … we have music from country to rock to big band music.”

“Our music committee members took it upon themselves to decide that we have this incredible stage, and we have an opportunity to bring bands in and showcase them,” she said. “We decided we didn’t want to be like every other festival and bring in the same groups. … You may find your next favorite band at our festival.”

Other highlights at the festival will include: • A Native American village, featuring seminars, vendors and “an interactive village,” Farris said.

• There will be the festival’s inaugural teen night on June 7 at Lincoln Park, which is located at Main Street and Fourth Street in St. Charles. Farris said the event will include teen bands, as well as vendors.

She said organizers “wanted to create a fun, safe environment that’s not the main stage zone.

It’s all about the teenagers.”

• There will be a wine garden, as well as a duck derby.

In the duck derby, visitors can “adopt” ducks that will be dropped into the Fox River.

Winners will be selected.

“It’s going to be a wonderful, full event,” Farris said.

“There’s going to be something for everybody.”

People still can register the day of the event, he said. The egg hunt will be divided into four age groups. As kids wait for their age group to begin, families can hang out at a petting zoo that the church also has brought in for the day.

He encouraged people to show up early to ensure they get a parking space. With the church seeing an average of 80 people during a Sunday service, Diamond said he is excited about the additional number of people the event promises to bring to the church grounds.

“For us to have the chance to share the love of God with upwards of 1,500 people, it will really be incredible,” he said.

Other organizations featuring unusual egg hunts will include the Batavia Park District, which will have a hunt for dogs on Saturday, and the Fox Valley Park District, which will hold a flashlight egg hunt at Blackberry Farm on April 17.

“This will be our third year for the doggie Easter egg hunt,” said Kari Miller, director of marketing and public relations for the Batavia Park District. “The past two years, we’ve had a very good turnout. ... We had approximately 80 dogs last year.”

The Doggie Easter Egg Hunt will be at the West Main Community Park at 40W101 W. Main St., Batavia. Regis-

tration will begin at 11:30 a.m., but owners can come early and browse a variety of pet-friendly booths and pick up complimentary products. The eggs are stuffed with dog treats.

The cost is $10 for the first dog and $5 for each additional dog, with a portion of the proceeds going toward Anderson Animal Shelter in South Elgin.

“I think it’s something different and unique for people,” Miller said. “It’s kind of fun for families to not only participate in the regular kid-friendly Easter egg hunt, but then to bring the family pet along, as well, and get them in on the fun, as well.”

In a twist on the traditional hunt, a helicopter will drop thousands of eggs onto a field near the church, located at 1S455 S. Mill Creek Drive in the Mill Creek subdivision near Geneva. Participants will search for the eggs.

On a day filled with egg hunts throughout the area, the church’s is among the most distinctive.

“One of the things that our church is really passionate about is outreach,” said Grant Diamond, head pastor at Faith Baptist Church. “I wanted to come up with something that would allow us to just get as many people together this Easter and to give us a chance to invite them to our Easter service the following week. We want to share the love of God with as many people as we can in our community.”

Diamond said he heard about a church in North Carolina doing a helicopter egg drop, and then researched the idea. Registration for the event starts at 10:15 a.m. that day and the helicopter will arrive at 11:10 a.m.

Safety is the church’s biggest priority during the event, Diamond said. The helicopter will not fly if it is too windy, and volunteers have been trained to ensure the event goes smoothly, he said. Some have spent the past few weeks stuffing the hard plastic eggs with candy, toys and prizes.

“The Easter Bunny will get on the helicopter and load it up with eggs,” Diamond said. The actual drop will occur around 11:15 a.m., he said.

Ten-minute helicopter rides will be offered at a cost of $25 a person, and free helicopter rides will be given away in four “special” eggs. The event has garnered a lot of interest, Diamond said.

“We’ve got over 430 families registered now, which is totally crazy,” Diamond said. “We kind of went viral on Facebook.”

Distinctive egg hunts set throughout area

Petting zoo owner might have to post cash for care of 2 goats

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A hearing is scheduled next week on whether a petting zoo owner charged with animal cruelty should have to post $3,555 for 30 days of care for two goats in the custody of Kane County Animal Control.

In a formal ruling this week, Judith Brawka, chief judge of the 16th Judicial Circuit, declared that all but two goats are forfeited because owner Stacy Fiebelkorn of Elgin failed to post $30,000 as a security to pay for the care of 31 other animals, mostly horses, impounded by Animal Control.

Fiebelkorn was charged with animal cruelty and neglect in connection with 94 sick and starving animals removed from her business, the Mini Zoo Crew, at a farm on Beith Road near Maple Park and at another farm on Route 20 near Hampshire.

Kane County Associate Judge Elizabeth Flood ruled last month the two goats were not subject to forfeiture because they were not considered companion animals.

to issue a gag order on officials’ comments outside of court. In court papers, Wombacher argued that comments from 36 news stories circulated among 10 news outlets jeopardizes Fiebelkorn’s right to a fair trial.

In court papers filed this week, Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Erin Gaeke argued that restricting comments outside court would be a violation of federal and state constitutions’ protection of free speech.

The filing asserts that officials’ comments “are factual and concern the victim animals and are all permitted by the rules regarding trial publicity.”

“None of these statements express belief as to defendant’s guilt,” the filing states, in part.

“The public statements cited by defendant and made by any law enforcement entity are purely factual and expressly permitted by relevant statutes.”

Also to be heard the same day is a request by the Kane County Chronicle to have cameras in the courtroom when criminal charges against Fiebelkorn are scheduled for a hearing at 1 p.m. Thursday.

The criminal charges, both misdemeanors, allege that Fiebelkorn starved horses, donkeys, chickens, ducks, rabbits, llamas and alpacas in her care.

The filing cites the state statute that allows for security to be posted to pay for the care of impounded “companion animals.” The filing argues the legal definition “includes but Stacy is not limited to Fiebelkorn canines, felines and equines.

The goats at issue in this case are companion animals. Thus [the law] applies to the two goats in question and should be subject to the posting of security.”

A hearing on the security request for the two goats is scheduled at 1 p.m. Monday at Kane County Branch Court, according to Brawka’s ruling.

Brawka’s ruling also noted that Fiebelkorn was withdrawing her request to have some ponies released to Donley’s Wild West Town, an amusement park in Union, for children’s pony rides.

Born: Sept. 13, 1917 Died: April 9, 2014 ST. CHARLES – Wilma Marie Godfrey, 96, of St. Charles, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Johnson County, Ill., on Sept. 13, 1917, the daughter of Ward and Lillian (nee Moser) Newbold. She was united in marriage to Ralph A. Godfrey on April 3, 1942.

Wilma will be remembered for her love for her family and friends.

She enjoyed raising her family in St. Charles. She extended an open door and a seat at her kitchen table for her family and their many friends. Her volunteer services included Sunday school teacher, Cub Scout den mother and preparing

meals for the Lazarus House.

Wilma is survived by her three sons, Gene Godfrey, Jerry (Sherry) Godfrey, both of St. Charles, and Dennis Godfrey of Sycamore; a daughter-in-law, Mary Kay (Don McVicar) Godfrey; seven grandchildren, Rick (Susie), Stefanie, Susan, Christopher, Jeff, Brad (Ming) and Kristen; and four great-grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, Jacob and Grace.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; a son, Don; two sisters, Opal Tanner and Virginia Busch; and two brothers, Carl Newbold and Gilbert Busch.

The visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at Moss-Norris Funeral Home, 100 S. Third St., St. Charles.

He was born Oct. 11, 1950, in Chicago, the son of the late Stanley and Helene (Washko) Monokoski.

Gibby graduated from Northern Illinois University with his BA and MA in Music and did his Ph.D. work at Northwestern University. He was a professor of music at Waubonsee Community College where he taught Music Theory, Composition, Music Literature and Jazz Piano, while coordinating the music performance program for more than 39 years. Among his honors, he received the Teacher of the Year Award among all Illinois community colleges in 1987. He served as president of the Fox Valley Symphony for several years. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Fox Valley Arts Hall of Fame.

In addition, he received the Fox Valley Orchestra’s first-ever Champion of the Arts award in 2013 for his dedication to the arts and

GENEVA – After receiving support from voters last month, Kane County is working to make electric aggregation happen.

The approved March 18 ballot measure gives the county the power to negotiate electric rates for unincorporated residents.

Residents can opt out of the program and continue to get their electricity supplied

by ComEd, but the county expects that those in the program should experience some savings.

Staff on Thursday told the Energy and Environmental Committee what must be done before the Kane County Board selects a supplier.

First, a blueprint plan of operation and governance will be drafted by staff and brought to the committee – and ultimately the County Board – for approval. This document will include pro-

tections for county residents, staff said. Staff said other counties and municipalities that have electric aggregation will be consulted so Kane County can learn from their mistakes.

Two public hearings will be held so residents can provide input on the blueprint plan, staff said. The county also intends to select an aggregation expert for assistance.

Staff said there is no shortage of interested parties, as the county has been getting calls and emails regularly.

The final step is selecting a supplier.

Although participating residents won’t get their power from ComEd, they will continue to have their electricity delivery and service-related issues handled by the utility company.

Staff didn’t have a detailed timeline of the process Thursday but said a draft of the blueprint plan is expected to be ready for the committee’s meeting next month.

OPINIONS On the road to blissful solitude Ordinarily – except when writing – I like to be around people. Not interacting with them, of course, because that means answering questions like, “How was your weekend?” and, “How’d the colonoscopy go?”

However, without friend, wife or kids around, I feel worse than lonely; I question my physical existence. Am I merely a figment of my imagination? To cement the notion I’m concrete, I eat. Food advocating heart attacks, tumors and sleepless nights beckon best, and I consume the toxic delectables while watching a Turner Classic Movie or a rerun of “The Shining,” my fork chopping through leftover meatloaf as avidly as Jack’s fire ax through a locked bathroom door.

This need for camaraderie takes a holiday, however, when I’m asked to do a reading in Michigan. Jumping onto the interstate, I land in one of those boxy, tan motels with allergies to charm and make one feel cozy.

A roll of barbed wire around the parking lot would complete a prison-escape movie set.

To me, though, it’s the Ritz-Carlton. Not since turning husband and father have I arrived solo. For traveling business types, paint-by-number motel rooms might look more depressing than industrial carpeting. For me, the room, barren of bodies as an air-conditioned Antarctic outhouse in winter, feels as magical as a teen’s first kiss.

For the first time in 30 years, I can: • Use innumerable towels after my shower instead of the only one not left at the pool, a soaking hand towel taken for a bath mat.

• Watch HBO instead of Disney, Nickelodeon or repeated threats of hail in Two Bit, Texas.

• Sleep in the motel bed instead of a rollaway or foldout

• Frequent the bleach-scented pool without lugging beach balls, inner tubes and plastic ordnance. (This I’ll skip, afraid a dad might announce, “Hey, a fifth for Marco Polo!” when I want to be as distant from mariner minors as Marco Polo was from shore when mid-ocean.)

As the door clicks closed behind me, I collapse into blissful solitude, heavenly only because it will be short-lived and people I love await my return home.

Increase the pressure THE WASHINGTON POST For nearly three weeks after announcing the annexation of Crimea, Vladimir Putin held off on further dismemberment of Ukraine.

No doubt he was measuring the West’s reaction to the first forcible change of borders in Europe since 1945. Apparently, he wasn’t impressed – and given U.S. and European inertia, why would he have been?

So on Sunday, another Russian-backed operation that looked a lot like the beginning of the Crimea invasion got underway in three eastern Ukrainian cities.

declared independence or plans for referendums and appealed for Moscow’s protection. Ukrainian forces managed to clear the regional administration building in Kharkiv early Tuesday, but standoffs continued in the other two cities. At a congressional hearing, Secretary of State John Kerry accused Russia of an “illegal and illegitimate effort to destabilize a sovereign state and create a contrived crisis with paid operatives.”

Mr. Kerry threatened further sanctions. If so, they will be welcome but overdue.

It’s not too late to prevent Russia from destroying Ukraine, but this time the West must act quickly. A presidential election sched-

uled for May 25 is vital to stabilizing the country, by creating a new government with a clear mandate. Predictably, Russia has been demanding that the election be called off. The provocations in eastern Ukraine, if they do not presage an invasion by the Russian troops still massed on the border, are likely the beginning of an effort to disrupt the vote and make the country ungovernable.

The United States and European Union can counter the Russian strategy in the short term by fully backing the Ukrainian government in taking the necessary measures to restore order. The next step is to apply meaningful new sanctions.

Bulldogs run out of chances, daylight in 13-inning stalemate

Days like Thursday affirm that roster composition for longtime Bulldogs coach Matt Holm.

Batavia used five pitchers in 13 innings against Upstate Eight Conference crossover opponent Waubonsie Valley.

The teams were tied 1-all when darkness suspended play. The game will only be resumed if it ends up affecting the conference race.

“We got a roster of 25 guys, 15 of them are pitchers, and that’s the idea,” Holm said.

“We will never run out of pitching.”

Western Michigan-bound left-hander Jacob Piechota pitched eight innings of onerun ball for the Bulldogs but would have been a tough-luck loser if not for a dramatic defensive play from left fielder

Reagan McReynolds.

With two outs and a runner on second in the bottom of the eighth, Waubonsie senior Tyler Hasper grounded a sharp single through the hole into left field. A charging McReynolds fired home to catcher Dino Simoncelli, who gathered the throw and tagged out Ryan Strick to send the game deeper into extra innings.

Holm said McReynolds is generally known more for his speed than his arm in the outfield, but with the game on the line, the senior’s throw had plenty of zip.

“It’s great,” McReynolds said. “I wish we could have come out on top, with offensively struggling, but it felt good to help my team out a little bit.”

Batavia relief pitchers Nick Rogalski, Laren Eustace, Ryan Olson and Eric Huizinga combined for five innings of scoreless relief to support Piechota.

While pitching and defense were strong for Batavia

(5-1, 1-0 UEC River), it was a forgettable day at the plate against Waubonsie starter Jack Eddy (nine innings) and reliever Nick Drago (four innings).

“I think as a team we’re a very good hitting team, but today, we just couldn’t find it,” McReynolds said.

Wasted opportunities in the late innings piled high for the Bulldogs, who had at least one runner in scoring position in the sixth, seventh, Reagan ninth and 13th McReynolds innings, but couldn’t muster a clutch hit. Batavia also had a pair of runners thrown out trying to steal second base in the 11th by Waubonsie catcher Luke Marzano.

Batavia’s lone run came in the top of the third after a leadoff single by second baseman Jeremy Schoessling. A Steven

Busby sacrifice bunt moved Schoessling to second, and the senior scored on an infield error by the Warriors.

Waubonsie (3-3, 0-1 UEC Valley) tied the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from junior Ryan Jones.

The Warriors were coming off a 21-8 drubbing Wednesday at the hands of Naperville North but Eddy’s pitching performance set the tone for a drastically better outing against Batavia.

“It was great to bounce back like that but playing 13 innings, we just really wish we could have picked up the ‘W,’ ” Eddy said. “And especially for me, throwing nine innings, I really wish we could have, but oh well. Just get the next one, I guess.”

Simoncelli had a pair of hits for Batavia, including a double to left that almost left the park to lead off the top of the seventh.

Holm said he expects Thursday’s marathon match-

Working ahead in counts behind an effective first-pitch fastball, Nutof struck out 12 Saints in five innings while scattering four hits and two walks.

East center fielder Brannon Barry called Nutof the best pitcher he has seen in his varsity career outside of former teammate Matt Starai – Barry’s first-pitch double in the third notwithstanding.

The subject of another Barry assessment helped keep his team in the game against the

Storm (2-2, 1-1 UEC Valley).

Senior righty Mike Boehmer won just one game last season, in part because he pitched behind Starai and a senior-laden staff.

On Thursday, he delivered his second victory of 2014 with six innings of two-hit, four-strikeout and four-walk ball.

“Mike might not have the velocity that Nutof has, but Mike went pitch for pitch with him,” Barry said.

Not literally, of course.

Boehmer enjoyed more success with his off-speed and secondary pitches to keep South Elgin hitters guessing.

“Sometimes you get innings where you’re just real focused,” Boehmer said. “I was wild at the beginning and again at the end, but managed to be effective in the middle.”

Mick Vyzral worked around a seventh-inning run to earn the save.

East stranded multiple

runners on base in three innings, including leaving the bases loaded in the sixth.

Acting on a tip from assistant coach Mark Foulkes, Saints hitters crowded the plate in the seventh. The rationale, Smith said, was to protect the outside part of the plate enough that anything that didn’t hit the Saints was a strike.

Smith’s two-run single, his second hit of the game, scored pinch runner Mike Settle and Barry. The Saints eluded potential disaster earlier in the inning after a bunt foulout and confusion on the base paths after Barry’s bloop single over shortstop.

Barry advanced to second one batter before Smith, at the back end of Reid Olson’s deep sacrifice fly to center. Settle narrowly beat a fantastic throw from the Storm’s Nick Menken, and the umpire’s “safe” call flustered South Elgin’s second baseman enough for him to vacate the base momentarily.

“Just took off and tried to advance as quickly as possible, because that’s scoring position,” Barry said.

Moments later, Smith delivered the first East runs since the seventh inning of an April 2 game at Fremd. Shortly after that, the “WOOO!” was on.

Smith snapped the St. Charles East baseball team’s 20-inning scoreless streak with his two-out hit in the seventh inning at South Elgin.

While his celebratory scream took that slump into account, the sound largely hailed the 2-1 Upstate Eight Conference crossover victory it helped create.

Deep and confident, the Kaneland boys team enters its first outdoor invite Saturday at East Moline United brimming with potential.

We’re talking postseason – not just for a meet on the second Saturday in April.

“I mean, if it’s the year to take home the [2A state] title,” senior thrower Nate Dyer said, “it’s got to be this year. …

Our talent is so widely spread that, you know, there’s no reason we can’t score in almost every event.”

Kaneland followed that democratic formula in winning last month’s Northern Illinois Big 12 indoor meet at Sterling by 62 points. A week later, a handful of athletes embraced the chance to represent the program at the March 29 Illinois Prep Top Times meet, the unofficial indoor state championship.

Forced to work out in the school halls for the bulk of indoor season, the Knights envision even better times and standards now that the weather has started to break.

“We’ll be in better shape and stuff because we pretty much ran in the halls and stuff,” Stanford-bound senior distance standout Nathaniel Kucera said, “and you pretty much can’t do anything with a 50-meter straightaway and sharp right turn.”

St. Charles East senior Jordan Shead provided one of the more memorable moments of the indoor season during the Saints’ run to the Upstate Eight Conference title last month.

Before that morning, the Notre Dame recruit had not competed in an indoor 800, sending her to the first of four finals heats. Heats traditionally progress to the fastest seed times.

Sixteen athletes completed 800s after that, but none were able to top her 58.36. Shead provided a bit of foreshadowing by winning her heat by 8.27 seconds.

“We can’t put her in there without a time. That’s just the rules, so that’s what happened there,” Saints coach Tim Wolf said. “That was kind of exciting. It’s interesting to see a kid like that be able to do something like that in a slow heat

Beware of ’Dogs Batavia’s fieldhouse still generates plenty of buzz three years after it opened, but the Bulldogs want to assure opponents their skill is an attraction, too.

The boys program started positively to that end with a third-place finish at the UEC indoor meet, which it hosted.

The Bulldogs expect to close the gap on champion Neuqua Valley, runner-up Waubonsie Valley and other top programs as the outdoor season progresses.

“Our goal for this team is we’ve got to take the next step, you know. We’ve got to become an elite team,” junior distance runner Ryan Wieties said. “We are building up locally and regionally. I think we’re building up a reputation.

“But we want to be the team that everyone fears. We want to be Neuqua.

We want to be Elmhurst York. That’s our goal. Our goal is to build up and be that team that we always have that target on our back, and that’s what we love.”

The forecast is calling for rain Saturday, but not until the evening, when this glut of outdoor invitationals will be over.

Although indoor workouts and meets keep them limber and on the move, athletes have no doubt been itching to take things outside.

“He’s got the presence and the capacity mentally to handle that role,” Johnson said. “And he’s got three pitches he can throw for strikes, and at this level that’s what you need. You need to come in and throw strikes and don’t get beat to the pull side and mix your pitches.

And he does that.”

GENEVA – While Tyler Skulina’s ERA won’t thank him after Thursday’s outing, the starting pitcher and his manager know those stats won’t tell the whole story.

Skulina surrendered five runs in his second start of the season, but he earned his first victory in a 7-5 Cougars win over the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Skulina allowed one run and two hits through five innings of work, and after a leadoff double in the sixth, he was one out away from making it one run over six innings. But a two-out double was followed by a pair of singles, and Skulina exited.

Reliever Justin Amlung then gave up a two-run double, meaning Skulina’s line ballooned to five runs over 5⅔ innings.

But despite those late struggles to put a bow on his day, Skulina earned good reviews.

“He pitched really well,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “He got ahead of guys and had a decent feel of his secondary pitches. He’s that one guy away right there, and then a little blooper, then a double, and there you go, they’ve got a big number.

It’s a positive note for him, though. He threw the ball really well. That’s two outings in a row he’s been consistent and he’s been able to repeat his delivery. It was encouraging.”

Pair Thursday’s outing with his season debut – a no-decision that saw the

6-foot-5 right-hander throw six scoreless innings and allow just two hits – and Skulina is off to a strong start after seeing limited action with the Cougars last season.

“I feel good, very confident out there,” Skulina said.

“My command has been a lot better than it has in the past, and that’s what I’m taking away from what I’m doing right now. Really focusing on my command and my fastball, taking advantage of the fact that when you have two strikes on a guy early just to bury him with a slider or something like that. Mostly just that, just making sure my command’s there every day.”

Skulina’s second outing of the season was made easier than his first (a 2-1 Cougars loss) thanks to the Cougars offense, which scored six runs off Fort Wayne starter Walker Weickel in the first two innings.

Right fielder Yasiel Balaguert drove in three runs in those innings. Second baseman Daniel Lockhart and shortstop Carlos Penalver each reached base twice and scored a combined four runs.

Despite being generally shut down by Fort Wayne reliever Payton Baskette over the final six innings, the Cougars (4-3) did score one more in the eighth on an RBI single from first baseman Jacob Rogers.

The seven-run output in the series finale was the team’s highest output since Opening Day, when it scored eight runs in an 8-4 win over Quad Cities.

The Cougars won two out of three games in the series.

Up next

Walker Weickel, another starting pitcher, Payton Baskette, threw six innings for the TinCaps.

“I don’t know if we could’ve done it or they could’ve done it,” Johnson said of another trip into extra innings. “That Baskette kid, he came in and really picked them up.”

Thursday marked just the third time in seven games this season the Cougars played a nine-inning game.

First there was Florence, a real local character with a sarcastic viewpoint and no hesitation about expressing her opinions.

Then there was Maxine, the Internet creation with a similar profile who has a wide audience that appreciates her candor. We circulate her images so, in a way, Maxine does the finger poking so we don’t have to be so direct. Right?

This is the time of year when the real Florence – actually my mother – would make her annual pronouncement that Arbor Day was her favorite holiday. No decorating, no relatives, no presents. Even if I might, to some minor extent, feel the same way, it is handy to invoke the Florence tale and her finger poke does the job.

And so Arbor Day, this year, is celebrated on April 25 in downtown St. Charles. The Tree Commission is inviting everyone to an event at 4 p.m. at Lincoln Park, which is located at the

The “Tribute to Trees” will feature live music, art, a tree raffle, demonstrations and refreshments.

Sounds like a favorite holiday!

Now that most of the ground is snow free – at least temporarily – it is possible to put an ear to the ground and pick up the vibes.

Here’s one: The volunteer advisory board of the Juvenile Drug Court helps to raise funds to pay for some of the incentives used to motivate young people as they move through the requirements of the system.

For example, the latest expenditure was for GED. services and such items as the graduation program.

A special opportunity to participate in fundraising is scheduled for Monday, April 28.

California Pizza Kitchen in the Geneva Commons will donate 20 percent of orders to the Juvenile Drug Court.

A slight complication is that you must present the flyer announcing the event.

She can answer questions and distribute the necessary flyer.

Nancy, who is a volunteer with a capital “V,” also chairs the city of St. Charles Youth Commission and pitches in with the Citizens Police Academy.

Sometimes, she bakes a pie for a lady in a wheelchair.

So, if her phone is busy, keep trying.

In the good old days, April was the time for getting out those items so kids could play outdoors. In those days there

were no trampolines or fancy bicycles.

More likely outdoor play called for a skate key or an empty tin can for the kicking during the ’til dusk hide-andseek marathons.

The cane pole and bobbin were readied for the “Piano Bridge” dip when the bullheads were biting.

Perhaps the two wheeler and tricycle could be brightened up with new handlebar grips with colored streamers?

And what happened to that jump rope from last year? Need an extra long one for double dutch.

You are going outdoors to play, aren’t you? Try to leave all those electronic devices indoors for the old timers.

GENEVA – Chris Pawlak, a teacher at Geneva High School, recently won a $2,500 grant through Farmers Insurance's "Thank a Million Teachers" program – a national initiative that offer thanks to teachers, present and past, who have made a difference.

Pawlak is one of 30 winners to receive the grant.

As part of the program, Farmers invited teachers to submit proposals for a chance to win grants to fund their classroom. During March, the public voted on nearly 1,300 submitted proposals, with the top six vote-getters in five regions selected as winners.

“These winning teachers are outstanding examples of the type of creativity and dedication found in classrooms across America and we congratulate our first group of

winners,” said Randy Rice, national manager of education programs for Farmers Insurance, in a release. “We know these grants will have a major impact in schools throughout the country, and we want to remind teachers that they can continue to submit proposals through the end of October as we will have additional opportunities for them to win grants.”

Farmers announced the launch of the “Thank A Million Teachers” program in late December at a special event featuring Jack Black, who thanked his former teacher Debbie Devine, who he credited with saving his life, states the release.

Teachers can submit their grant proposals for the next round of voting to ThankAMillionTeachers.com. Proposals for the next round are being accepted in April for public voting in May.

Volvo wagon introduced to United States With the demise of the V50 and V70 as sales choices for wagons in the United States, Volvo has offered a replacement this year. It is the 2015 V60 compact wagon. It is for sale at Volvo dealerships today.

One look at the V60 and it is obvious Volvos have changed.

No longer are they boxes powered by a dutiful engine.

Today with the newly introduced V60 T5 Drive-E wagon, Volvo has gone stylish and put a lot of pizzazz in the powerplant.

Based on the S60 sedan, Volvo calls the V60 a sport wagon. The 2-liter, 240-horsepower, inline turbocharged, four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed shiftable, automatic transmission will get the 3,550-pound wagon from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than seven seconds.

Not bad.

Aerodynamic with indentations and a spoiler in the rear along with two trapezoidal alloy tailpipe tips at the corners, it has the looks of a sportster. Creases run along the upper and lower sides, rising from the front edgy fenders to the rear LED angled vertical tail-lamps. Windows taper along with the roof line. The iconic Volvo emblem embedded in the diagonal bar remains a fixture on the front grille.

Following company tradition, safety is still at the forefront of a Volvo product, including the four-door, five-occupant compact V60 wagon. Standard even on the base and tested $35,300 T5 Drive-E model is a low speed collision avoidance system (prevents or mitigates slow moving collisions with automatic braking), plus dual chamber side air bags for leather-clad front-seat occupants.

What this means is that airbags adapt the level of inflation depending on the force of the collision. If the collision force is sufficiently low so the airbags are not needed, it will deploy the seatbelt pre-tensioners. The driver’s airbag also interacts with the deformation of the col-

The wagon’s steel framework, including front seats, is designed and reinforced to help displace the impact of a side-collision away from the occupants to other parts of the car body. It helps prevent intrusion into the cabin.

Volvo officials claim the side structure contains ultra-high strength steel to help withstand a severe side impact even with a larger vehicle. Inflatable curtains help protect all outboard occupants.

None of this safety gear was tested during the test week.

Standard safety fare includes traction and stability controls, a four-wheel antilock braking system, eight airbags, seatbelts and headrests for five with whip-

lash protection for front-seat occupants, child-safety door and window locks, tire pressure monitoring system and LED daytime running lamps.

The tested V60 included a $900 safety package of blind spot information system, cross traffic alert, lane change merge aid and front and rear park assist.

The powerplant was put through rigorous exercises on city, county, state and interstate roadways. Volvo calls the engine Drive-E, which stands for energy. The four-cylinder, Volvo engineers claim, can outperform six- or eight-cylinder engines.

While creating muscle (0 to 60 miles per hour in a tested 6.6 seconds), the turbo four-cylinder also expels fewer pollutants than prior Volvo models and increases fuel economy. The Environmental Protection Agency credits the V60 wagon with averaging 37 miles per gallon using regular fuel. That’s on the highway. The city number is 25 mpg. During

the test week with two adults aboard in mostly highway travel, the average was 33.9 mph. The eight-speed shiftable transmission, plus stop and start technology, contribute to fuel economy.

The engine quits at stop signs, for example, and restarts when a foot pushes the gas pedal. That feature worked effectively and is almost undetectable. Paddle shifters behind the leather-clad steering wheel are in a $1,500 option package that also includes 19-inch replacing 17-inch alloy wheels, a harder suspension and more decorative front bucket seats.

Power features include express windows, door locks, heated exterior mirrors, sunroof and front cloth seats. Heated front seats is a $500 extra and leather seating surfaces are optional. Standard amenities include tilt and telescoping steering column, memorized power settings for three drivers, cruise control, intermittent wipers

(rain-sensing on windshield), rear defogger, automatic climate control, front and rear reading lights.

As a wagon, the V60 T5 did the job offering adequate leg room in front, if somewhat constricted in the rear seating area. Storage capacity is 43.8 cubic feet. Rear seats split and fold flat. The carpeted and lighted storage area had a cargo cover and tiedowns.

The ride was pleasant and quiet during the test week, which speaks to adequate insulation to isolate occupants from engine and road noise. Climate controls are easy to understand and large enough to find and operate. The 160-watt, eight-speaker sound system included AM-FM-satellite radio, auxiliary audio input, iPod hookup, USB connection, Bluetooth and a video monitor.

Volvo introduced its first wagon to North America 60 years ago. The first production V60 models went to Europe several years ago. Successful sales on the continent encouraged company executives to export the wagon to the United States.

Volvo pulled its V50 and V70 wagons from the U.S. market a few years ago. In Volvo nomenclature, a V signifies a wagon, the S a sedan and the C a coupe.

XC (four-wheel cross-country) stands for a sport utility vehicle.

Volvo has upped the value of ownership. Instead of free maintenance for a year and a 5,000 to 12,000 miles per most luxury car makers, Volvo’s is three years or 36,000 miles. The overall warranty remains at four years or 48,000 miles.

The curvilinear redesign encouraged Volvo to add excitement to the palette of colors for the exterior of the V60. Of the 10 colors, three are light grey or beige, two white, two black, two blue and one red and that is not all that exciting. But one color does stand out and it was the paint of the test V60. Volvo calls the color “power blue metallic.”

It is a winner.

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post The title character of “Dom Hemingway” is a Cockney safecracker, played with Rabelaisian gusto by Jude Law. His performance – which starts at 11 and stays there – may well go down in history as one of the most colorful low-lifes ever committed to film.

It is doubtful that the movie itself will be so fondly remembered.

The story opens with a bang, as we watch Dom, in prison, being serviced by a fellow inmate. Addressing the audience, Law proceeds to deliver a long monologue that is so simultaneously foul-mouthed and silver-tongued that it beggars description. By turns Shakespearean and surreal, it’s a funny and filthy tour de force.

But it also serves a preemptive purpose. By getting that scene out of the way early, the film removes all doubt that the man we are about to spend the next 90 minutes with – whose very name suggests a pedigree both boorish and literary – is equal parts poet and lug nut.

Whether he’s likable is another matter.

In truth, it’s kind of hard to hate the guy, despite his grotesqueness.

Mostly, that’s thanks to Law, whose good looks and charm go a long way to seduce us.

“What can I say?” says Dom, in a thick accent made more impenetrable by the ever-present cigarette hanging from his lip, “I’m a handsome [expletive].”

That’s certainly true. But Dom also makes for a wildly entertaining tour guide to the trouble that seems to follow him like a cloud. Although things initially are looking

Sure, he’s released from prison – whereupon he’s rewarded with a pile of cash by the mobster he took the fall for (Demian Bichir) – but then, almost immediately, he’s in a horrific car accident.

The money is stolen, he can barely walk and the daughter he abandoned 12 years ago when he was sent to prison (Emilia Clarke) wisely wants nothing to do with her father’s attempt at a reconciliation.

Making matters worse is the fact that the son of a former rival (Jumayn Hunter) wants to castrate Dom for killing his cat when he was little.

“Misfortune befell me” is how Dom, in a fit of rare understatement, explains

his propensity for screwing up. Note: It’s never, ever his fault.

If all this seems a bit precious, it is. Dom’s best friend, Dickie (Richard E. Grant), is a waggish toff with a prosthetic hand and yellow-tinted aviator shades. Observing everything with a sense of detached disapproval mixed with secret admiration, Dickie is a stand-in for us. But the character feels less human than an example of screenwriting artifice. Another character (Kerry Condon), whose life Dom saves in a lapse of unselfishness, pops up late in the film like an angel, delivering just the dose of luck that Dom – as well as “Dom Hemingway” – needs.

Though writer-director Richard Shepard (“The Matador”) knows how to spin a yarn about the vicissitudes of fate, Dom’s adventures make

for a pretty thin garment in which to cloth such an outsize antihero. Shepard tries to add heft to the lightweight tale by introducing a thread about Dom trying to repair his relationship with his daughter. Rather than humanizing him, however, Dom’s efforts to play Daddy – and to convince us that he has a heart – feel dictated by market research, not character.

You may find yourself watching these exertions with more impatience than skepticism. The good Dom may be necessary, from a story point of view. But the bad one is more fun.

• “Dom Hemingway” received two-and-half stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains violence, drug use, sex, nudity and copious vulgarity. It runs 93 minutes.

There is a difference between living together and being married because of our legal system.

Because people who co-habit without benefit of marriage are considered individuals in the eyes of the law, it is probably prudent to keep their financial affairs separate.

However, each person should contribute to the expenses they share.

In a marriage, the situation is different. The law assumes

that the man and wife are one unit. This is the mindset you adopted when you and your wife were married.

There is a tendency among young couples, not only because of the high divorce rate, but also what they have been exposed to in the media from the time they were born, to view marriage as something that might not last.

There is also a sense of entitlement among many – NOT ALL – that makes them centered on themselves.

We have become a society in which disposability has spread from material possessions to relationships.

Use precautions when taking acetaminophen Dear Doctor K: As I’ve entered my 50s, I find myself reaching for Tylenol more often for my aches and pains. Should I be aware of any safety precautions?

Dear Reader: Acetaminophen is the active ingredient in Tylenol and several other over-the-counter medications. As with all medications, you should use it cautiously.

But if you stick to the guidelines, there’s little need to worry.

Acetaminophen controls pain and fever; it is an important drug for controlling chronic pain. But taking too much acetaminophen can damage the liver. In extreme cases, this liver damage can require a liver transplant, or even cause death.

For the average healthy adult, the recommended maximum dose is no more than 4,000 milligrams (mg) per day from all sources.

Some of my patients who regularly take between 3,000 mg and 4,000 mg have had abnormalities of the liver that show up on blood tests. I think their livers are particularly sensitive to acetaminophen. So, I recommend that all my patients try to stay below 3,000 mg per day.

If they need more than that for adequate pain relief, I monitor their liver tests carefully.

There are many pills available over-the-counter that contain

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff acetaminophen – more than 600 products. This includes many pain pills and sleep-aid pills. For any non-prescription medicines that you take regularly, be sure to check the bottle to see if it contains acetaminophen, and how much.

The combination of these pills plus regular acetaminophen pills can nudge you into the red zone.

If you have concerns, ask your doctor how much acetaminophen you should be able to tolerate safely. And check with your doctor if you need to take acetaminophen regularly for chronic pain.

Here are some general precautions for avoiding an accidental overdose: • Cold and flu remedies count.

When you reach for an overthe-counter cough, cold or flu product, look at the label. Does it contain acetaminophen?

• Know the dose of your pills.

Acetaminophen pills available over the counter may contain 325, 500 or 650 mg of the drug. On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put a table showing how often and how much you can safely take of

each dose.

• Stick to recommended doses.

Don’t be tempted to take more than the recommended dose. Take only as much as you need. Try not to exceed 3,000 mg a day if possible.

• Go easy on the alcohol. Drinking alcohol causes the liver to convert more of the acetaminophen you take into toxic byproducts.

• Know if your medications interact. Ask your doctor if any of your prescription medications could interact badly with acetaminophen.

Non-prescription medicines available over the counter are generally safe when taken as directed on the bottle. But that doesn’t mean that they’re safe in any amount.

About 10 years ago, the sister of a close colleague was having terrible back pain and took 8,000 mg per day of acetaminophen for several days. It caused liver failure, from which she died. Respect the directions on all over-thecounter medicines. They are there for a reason.

over boyfriend trouble Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and have been dating my boyfriend for five months, and I really love him. I was a virgin when we met, and then about a month ago we had sex. If we hadn’t been drinking, I don’t think I would ever have let this happen. But since then, we had sex a couple of more times and I thought he was really in love with me, too.

Now he is always doing things with his male friends and hardly ever calls me. I keep calling him, and he says he still loves me and says we’ll go out on the weekend, but then he calls and cancels. He should not be called a “loser.” The word “loser” is a term that can loom far bigger than the final score and echo inside a child to create great harm.

Dear Abby: My wife and I were discussing our sons-inlaw, and young men in their 20s and 30s in general. We were wondering where the attitude of “any money I earn is mine” in a marriage or live-in situation got started.

For the first few years of my daughter and her husband “Joe’s” marriage, Joe resented giving her any of the money he earned. My other daughter’s husband thinks nothing of spending money on himself and his friends without consulting her.

We have seen this attitude reflected in their friends as well. They don’t seem to discuss with each other how each is spending their “joint” income. There seems to be an element of selfishness, too.

My wife and I have been married 40 years and from the beginning I have always considered what each of us earned was OURS, not mine or hers (when she worked). We always discuss any significant

How wrong could he be when applied to bridge? Many players make mistakes because they play too quickly. In particular, when a defender is on lead, a delay or two ... or three ... for analysis is rarely a bad idea.

In this deal, for example, West leads the heart two against four spades. What should East do?

North responds with four clubs, a perfect splinter bid, showing at least four-card spade support, game-going values and at most a singleton in clubs.

East was tempted to overcall four hearts. However, the vulnerability was unfavorable; East presumably had two castiron defensive tricks (so the opponents did not have a slam); and North-South owned the master suit. (Note that if East does intervene with a four-heart bid, South should pass. North would be delighted to double for penalty and the price would be 1,100 or 1,400.)

East knows that his partner has led a singleton. So, many a defender wins with his heart ace and immediately gives his partner a ruff. After that, there is no longer a defense.

East should consider his target. Four tricks are needed, not three. From the point-count, West is known to have a Yarborough. So, East must organize his diamond ruff before giving West his spade ruff. At trick two, East should shift to his diamond.

Declarer will win in the dummy and play a spade, but East takes the trick and leads the heart eight, a suit-preference signal for diamonds. West, after ruffing, returns a diamond, and East’s ruff defeats the contract.
