As with most election days since I began in journalism almost 20 years ago, I started my day Tuesday at local polling places looking for voters willing to be photographed.

The reactions I get as I

walk into voting facilities are usually mixed, as my two large cameras are conspicuous. For the most part, election judges and voters alike are happy I’m there and more than willing to be photographed.

Luckily, that was the case Tuesday at the Sunset Community Center and the Congregational United Church of Christ near Campton Hills.

In the short time I spent at the two polling places, the

voting centers also became community gathering spots, as neighbors got to see one another as they went to vote.

Cool, dry weather expected after rainy Thursday

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Kane County will have a brief period of cool and dry weather after sustained periods of rain Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Kane County had on-and-off precipitation throughout the day and evening Thursday, but rainfall totals were not immediately available early Thursday evening, meteorologist Matt Friedlein said.

Kane County and more than 40 other counties in the state were under a tornado watch for about nine hours Thursday.

There were various reports of funnel clouds and tornadoes in northern Illinois, including reports of two separate tornado touchdowns Thursday evening near the village of Fairdale, west of Kirkland in DeKalb County.

After tornadoes touched down, emergency crews were working to free people from destroyed buildings and make sure people were safe, according to the Daily Chronicle, which is also owned by Shaw Media.

A tornado was also reported early Thursday evening crossing I-39 between Rockford and Rochelle, Friedlein said.

As of 8 p.m. Thursday, the forecast for today was a high in the upper 50s with wind gusts

as high as 30 mph, followed by a low in the mid-30s in the evening with wind gusts of up to 25 mph. The weather service forecast calls for a sunny Saturday with a high near 61 and a mostly clear evening with a low of about 40 degrees.

The next chance of rain is Sunday, with a 30 percent chance of showers after 1 p.m. with a high in the mid-60s.

That percentage will increase to 40 percent Sunday night with a low in the mid40s, according to the National Weather Service.

St. Charles Arbor Day celebration set for April 24 editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Tree Commission invites community members all ages to an annual celebration of trees later this month, according to a news release.

An Arbor Day event will be at 4 p.m. April 24 in Lincoln Park, 450 W. Main St., in downtown St. Charles, the release states.

The event will include music, art, a tree raffle, tree care demonstrations, educational material for homeowners and the 2015 Tribute to Trees entries, according to the release.

In addition, Munhall Elementary School fourth-graders

will present a play, “Tree Trouble,” and will sing and dance to John Denver’s song “Plant a Tree for Your Tomorrow.”

St. Charles has sponsored an Arbor Day event since 1998 to promote tree education and stewardship, the release states.

St. Charles is a certified Tree City, recognized for its outstanding care of trees, according to the release. The city’s urban forestry program extends from city parks to neighborhood streets and natural areas.

Actress Octavia Spencer talks writing with sixth-graders

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva sixth-graders probably didn’t expect to get homework Thursday from Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer.

The actress, who visited both Geneva middle schools, instructed the students to create a time capsule by writing a letter to themselves detailing their most outlandish dream. It could be wanting to be a bigger star than Justin Bieber or wanting to be a doctor by day and a writer by night, she said during a presentation in Geneva Middle School South’s cafeteria.

“This is your biggest hope and dream,” Spencer said.

Date the letter, she told the students, place it in a sealed envelope, hide it and – on bad days – think of that dream and do something, even if it’s reading a book or talking with someone, to work toward it.

Outlandish dreams can happen, she said, noting hers as a girl were to become an actress and writer.

She achieved both.

In addition to appearing in such movies as “Insurgent” and “The Help” – for which she won an Oscar – Spencer is the author of the Randi Rhodes, Ninja Detective series for children.

The series – which starts with “The Case of the Time-Capsule Bandit” and continues with “The Sweetest Heist in History” – combines her love of martial arts, mysteries and science experiments, she said.

In response to a student who asked her what inspired her to write, Spencer said, “You guys … in a roundabout way.”

She wanted to make reading fun for children, just as the Encyclopedia Brown books changed her reading life, she said, noting struggles with dyslexia.

She said it is difficult to say which she likes better: writing or acting.

“I can’t imagine a world where I don’t get to do both,” Spencer said.

ing, such as her writing process, what she does to combat writer’s block and whether she bases any of her novel’s elements on real life.

Spencer said her settings and characters are “very, very loosely based” on real life; she takes walks when she’s stuck; and her process includes having a beverage

nearby, turning off her phone for a few hours and using an outline.

Then, she said, she sits “and hope things come to me.”

She complimented the students on their “seriously amazing” questions, noting Savannah Guthrie from “Today” should watch out.

“Her days are numbered,” Spencer said.

When asked whether Geneva Middle School South was the first school she spoke at, Spencer said no.

“But the most fun, how about that?” she said.

A 57-year-old man was found dead in North Aurora with a self-inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday afternoon, according to police. During the incident, motorists were urged to avoid the area on the village’s west side, and police were blocking roads leading into the Summer Wind subdivision.

North Aurora police set up a perimeter to keep bystanders away with the assistance of officers from the Aurora Police Department and deputies from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

The Kane County Office of Emergency Management and the North Aurora Fire Department also assisted in the operation.

NORTH AURORA – A 57-year-old man was found dead in North Aurora with a self-inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday afternoon in a residence in the 700 block of Hidden Creek Lane, according to police.

The man first called 911 and indicated he was distraught and going to harm himself before hanging up the phone, North Aurora Deputy Police Chief Scott Buziecki wrote in an email. Police were dispatched to the scene about 1:59 p.m. for a report of a suicidal person with a weapon.

A witness in the neighborhood heard gunshots before to police arrived at the scene, Buziecki said. Police then secured the scene and kept bystanders away while members of the Kane County SWAT team prepared to enter the house, he said.

Upon entering the house at 5:15 p.m., the man was found deceased, Buziecki said. The

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Public Works Water Division will begin its annual spring hydrant flushing Monday, according to a news release.

The water system is split into two zones, which will be flushed separately – one zone in the spring and one zone in the fall. The city’s spring zone is split up into four quadrants. Main Street

(Route 64) divides the north and south quadrants, and the Fox River divides the east and west quadrants, the release states.

Hydrant flushing may start as early as 5 a.m. and continue through 4 p.m., according to the release.

The northwest quadrant will be flushed from Monday through April 17, and the southwest quadrant flushes from April 20 through 24.

Flushing then will move to the southeast quadrant from

April 27 through May 1, the release states.

The northeast hydrant flushing will be divided into two weeks, May 4 through 8 and May 11 through 15, according to the release.

A map at www.stcharlesil. gov/sites/default/files/business/2196-10905.pdf lists the specific dates and days of the week that quadrants will be flushed. Signs announcing hydrant flushing will be posted throughout the scheduled areas, the release states.

The city reminds residents water is safe to use and consume during hydrant flushing, but they might temporarily notice rust-colored water.

Public Works recommends limiting water use during hydrant flushing, according to the release.

If rust-colored water appears, wait until flushing has subsided, then run the cold water tap until it runs clear.

St. Charles hydrant flushing begins Monday

Truck once shown by father rediscovered by St. Charles son

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – In 2013, Daniel Serewicz discovered a 1985 Ford F-250 pickup truck on Craigslist that looked awfully familiar.

“I called my dad and said, ‘You got to check this out,’ ” Serewicz, a St. Charles resident, said. “Sure enough, that was it.”

The truck that Serewicz found once belonged to his father, Tom Serewicz, who entered it into multiple car shows, including the annual Chicago World of Wheels.

The father-son duo worked together throughout 2014 and up until a few hours before the start of the 2015 Chicago World of Wheels in March to reintroduce the truck – once named “Obsession” – as “Obsession 2.0.”

Just like its first iteration, Obsession 2.0 won first place in its pre-1988 truck class, and will make more appearances at other car shows.

Daniel Serewicz and his father got to work right away on the truck once they used its VIN number to confirm that was indeed Obsession from their past.

Tom Serewicz sold the truck in 1994 and it wasn’t seen in the area for some time because of its latest owner living in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The weathered truck was put up for sale on Craigslist, where Daniel Serewicz randomly found it.

There are multiple coincidences involving the truck and its history with the family.

Daniel Serewicz is 30, the same age as the truck, and he found the vehicle on Craigslist when he was 28, which was the same age his father was when he first bought the truck.

The truck’s factory birth date was Sept. 11, which also is the birthday of Tom Serewicz, his son said.

The family disassembled nearly the entire truck and replaced almost all on the metal on its body.

Daniel Serewicz said he spent about $70,000 in all on Obsession 2.0, half for parts and the other half for labor.

“It hurts to spend the money, but it’s just right,” Serewicz said. “All those coincidences, bringing the family together, it’s something positive.”

The workshop will include a walk-in clinic. Visitors will be able to try such skills as tight-rope walking, although Dripps-Paulson stressed the rope will be very close to the ground.

It is the 16th year for the festival, which is free. It is billed as being brought to the community by the school district and produced by the Kaneland Arts Initiative.

Dripps-Paulson also noted an appearance by Chicago Tap Theatre, which will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the auditorium. She said the group is distinctive because

it’s a professional organization that features tap dancing and live music.

“It will be really cool,” she said. “I’m looking forward to seeing a live dance performance with music.”

Also, she pointed out Kaneland students will have an opportunity to run the show this year. A group from Northern Illinois University will train the high school students on being the backstage crew and trying out the technical aspects of theater.

“This is really an opportunity for them,” Dripps-Paulson said.

Also, visitors will be able to have a caricature drawn by Michael Shiroda. Artist Dan Connelly will create metal jewelry with guests. There will be performances by Laura Fako Utley on the harp and Phil Passen on the hammered dulcimer. A 14-year-old virtuoso piano player, Daniel Souvigny, will perform.

MAPLE PARK – A circus atmosphere is headed to the annual Kaneland Community Arts Festival, and the event’s executive director said that’s a great thing.

The festival will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Kaneland High School, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park. The event will include performing artists, visual artists and artwork from students in Kaneland School District 302.

The executive director, Maria Dripps-Paulson, said one highlight will be an appearance by a group called CircEsteem, which will be providing a performance arts workshop from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

Before then, members will be walking around throughout the festival.

The group’s presence should be felt throughout the day, Dripps-Paulson said, as there will be clowns and performers on stilts during the festival.

Batavia police, fire to take on teachers during basketball game

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Batavia police and fire departments will take on Batavia School District 101 teachers during a basketball game April 25 to raise money for CASA Kane County.

CASA Kane County recruits, trains and supervises community volunteers who serve as court-appointed special advocates – or CASAs – for children who are in court because of abuse, neglect or private guardianship. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The Books vs. Badges basketball game previously took place every year to raise money for the city’s Fourth of July fireworks show, which is funded solely through donations. Bat-

avia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker said he wanted to revive the charity game, with the proceeds going toward helping kids.

“A few of my friends are CASA Kane County advocates,” Banker said. “It’s a great, great organization.”

As part of CASA Kane County’s 11th annual Hands Around the Courthouse event on Thursday, 588 pinwheels were placed in the courthouse lawn in Geneva to represent every child the agency served last year. The agency also placed blue ribbons down Third Street in Geneva and down Wilson Street in Batavia.

Banker reached out to Lori Hewitt, director of development for CASA Kane County, about putting on a benefit for

the organization. Hewitt said that – along with raising money for the agency – the basketball game also will help educate the public on what CASA Kane County does.

“We want it to be an annual thing,” Hewitt said. “We want to do it for at least five years.”

The game will be at 6 p.m. at Batavia High School, 1201 Main St., Batavia. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students, children and seniors.

There also will be concessions and entertainment by Batavia High School groups and a 50/50 raffle, as well as a half-time court challenge. Raffle tickets will be sold the night of the game for $1 each, or six for $5. For information, contact Banker at rbanker@cityofbatavia.net

THE WASHINGTON POST The video showing former North Charleston, South Carolina, police officer Michael T. Slager shooting Walter L. Scott dead is sickening. There is a full-color record of Slager firing eight shots at the back of a fleeing Scott, then deserting the fallen body, possibly to tamper with the crime scene. By local authorities’ own admission, it was the fortuitous act of a bystander with a smartphone that led to murder charges against Slager. We can’t help but wonder whether, in its absence, the officer would have escaped with impunity.

Once the footage came out, the reaction was quick and appropriate. Local authorities charged Slager, who faces death or a term of 30 years to life, and fired him.

The mayor and the police chief visited the Scott family. The grieving family urged disclosure from the police and calm from others.

“I don’t think that all police officers are bad cops,” Scott’s brother, Anthony, said.

“But there are some bad ones out there.”

The FBI, meanwhile, opened its own investigation.

Even though the case against Slager is moving forward quickly, the events in North Charleston underscore that police officers across the country must change the way they operate. One would think the minority of officers who violate policing norms might be checked by the knowledge that so many potential witnesses to their acts now carry cameras in their pockets.

Instead of relying on bystanders to provide evidence of wrongdoing, however, police departments should accept and accelerate the deployment of body cameras (which the North Charleston mayor has done in the wake of the shooting).

When situations nevertheless turn violent, investigations should be led by independent law enforcement agencies.

North Charleston did that when it turned the Slager investigation over to state police, and the inquiry will probably be more credible for it.

North Charleston still has far to go, both legally and emotionally. But the community has made a solid start.

You return home to find two unwanted plastic bags littering your driveway or lawn. Naturally, you leave them, hoping a tornado picks them up. When it doesn’t, a week later you reluctantly pick up the trash.

Two unimagined, palpable stoned nuisances have landed on my lawn this spring, twin-rocked bags advertising driveway repaving and lawn dethatching. My first inclination, driving to their respective addresses and throwing the bags onto their property, is scuttled when all I find is a post office box number.

So I call the Geneva police. “Is there a law against littering?”

The receptionist says not that she knows of. So I call City Hall, which means my alderman, Ron Singer, and ask him about the bags.

“What am I supposed to do with the stones?” I gripe. “Can’t put them in the garbage. Can’t recycle them.”

Ward coached the team for four seasons and enjoyed a successful run with the Spartans.

St. Francis won 72 games during his tenure and advanced to a Class 3A supersectional in 2012-13 on the heels of playing for a sectional title in 2011-12.

In fact, at all levels of the program, the Spartans won at

a 75-percent clip with Ward in charge.

“Obviously, we are losing a good one,” St. Francis athletic director Dan Hardwick said.

“But like I told him, we want what’s best for him. He’s a phenomenal Bob Ward coach. He’s been doing it for 30-some years and is going into the [Illinois Basketball Coaches Association] Hall of Fame in May. “I’m a big picture athletic director, and I’m more con-

cerned with developing good human beings and giving the kids a great experience. And that’s what he did.”

One thing stuck out the most to Hardwick.

“This struck me the most,” he said. “Every kid on the bench, even the kids who didn’t get a lot of playing time, they all thought they were an integral part of the success. That’s what makes a great coach; they make every person feel like an integral part of the team.

“And he overachieved every year. It would be a rebuilding year and we’d make it to the supersectional. Or it

Ward was also the head coach at Wheaton North from 1994 to 2000, and held previous head coaching positions at Spring Valley Hall and Round Lake.

Ward earned recognition as Kane County Chronicle Boys Basketball Coach of the Year in each of his first two seasons at the helm.

As far as Ward’s replacement, Hardwick said he would be taking applications until April 24 and expected the whole process to take at least a month.

“Our girls play hard – that’s all I can ask of them,” said Michael Smith, North’s coach. “But we came up on the wrong side of it. It’s a young team with only two seniors.

The rest are juniors, sophomores and with a strong class of freshmen.”

Smith lauded the play of Poojita Gundala. The junior won the ninth singles match and with teammate Anna Garcia, won the fifth doubles match for the North Stars.

“She won at doubles and singles. The only North Star to do so,” Smith said.

The highest singles match North won was fourth singles, where Kait Hartig beat Hiral Patel in three games.

The North Stars also took the 10th singles match.

The Saints won four of the five doubles matches and seven of the 10 singles matches in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division contest.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – They are the irrepressible Sons of Tiger, this generation of millennials preparing to lay waste to the sport of golf. They had Tiger Woods posters on their bedroom walls. They studied his icy stare and mimicked it in their junior tournaments.

They wore red shirts and sported Nike swooshes, long before anybody was paying them to do so, just because he did.

They came of age as Woods was dominating the sport as few had before him, his televised magnetism helping draw them in – but they arrived too late to experience the Tiger Era, in its fullfledged glory, for themselves.

And now, as the 2015 Masters dawns, they more than anyone else are helping to ensure its permanent demise.

Woods’s once-mighty river of major championships, numbering 14 in all, dried up following the 2008 U.S. Open, and he hasn’t so much as contended for a major in nearly two years. Into the ensuing void has stepped an army of youngsters who revere Woods more than they fear him, and who are hell-bent on succeeding him as the face of golf.

Chief among them, of course, is Rory McIlroy, the 25-year-old champion from Northern Ireland, with four

major titles already in his ledger and a chance this week to become just the sixth golfer in history to win the career grand slam. A new Nike commercial that debuted this week details – quite faithfully – McIlroy’s journey from idolizing Woods from afar to taking the figurative baton from him.

“He was someone I put up on a pedestal,” McIlroy said of Woods. “Now, I obviously have a very different relationship with him. I know him quite well. But I think if you ask a lot of golfers [of] my generation, he was the benchmark. He was the inspiration for us to go out and try to be the best that we could be.”

McIlroy, the top-ranked

golfer in the world, has a clear head start on his peers, but just as Woods, at 25, was still holding off peers such as Phil Mickelson, David Duval and Justin Leonard, McIlroy has serious work to do to lock up the title of best golfer of his generation.

The pack of talented peers chasing him includes 21-yearold Jordan Spieth, the fourthranked golfer in the world and last year’s Masters runner-up; 24-year-old Patrick Reed, who won four times on the PGA Tour in 18 months; and Rickie Fowler, 26, who finished in the top five at all four 2014 majors.

You might also include on the list Japanese phenom Hideki Matsuyama, 23; long-drive slugger Brooks Koepka, 24; Australia’s Jason Day, 27, a two-time U.S. Open runner-up; and 2014 FedEx Cup champ Billy Horschel, 28.

All these youngsters, even Day and Matsuyama across the Pacific Ocean, were brought into golf during the wave that arose from the peak of the Woods era.

“Tiger was my hero growing up and still remains the man to me,’’ Matsuyama said.

“When I would watch him on TV in Japan, I can remember thinking that he was so good and so cool and his swing was so pure. I vividly remember Tiger winning the U.S. Opens at Pebble Beach and Torrey Pines. I remember trying to swing like him, but his swing

was so good that I had no chance.”

Spieth, who would be graduating from the University of Texas this spring had he not left to turn pro in December 2012 as a sophomore, is young enough that he needed a video retrospective in order to learn about Woods’s fourth and last Masters title in 2005 – when Spieth was 11.

As he watched over and over Woods’s famous chip-in at the 16th hole in that final round, Spieth was blown away

by Woods’s exuberant fist pump and the commensurate explosion of the crowd.

“The magic he brings to this tournament and every major championship,” Spieth said, “it’s a dream for everybody to be in contention and try and take Tiger down on the back nine of Augusta.”

What is missing from these young players’ world views is any sense of fear or even awe of Woods. For the most part, they missed the era when Woods’s towering fame and overpowering game made him arguably the most intimidating player in golf history.

“They didn’t have to compete against him week in and week out like us, when you knew you couldn’t beat him,” veteran tour pro Pat Perez said recently. “There was a five-year stretch there when . . . there was nothing you could do about [him]. It’s just different now.”

Life for linebackers unchanged under Watson

By JESSE SEVERSON jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Even with Ross Watson taking over as linebacker coach this season, there hasn’t been much change from life under Kevin Kane, who went back to his alma mater Kansas to become the linebackers coach for the Jayhawks.

In fact, probably the biggest difference doesn’t have much to do with football.

“He’s got more hair than me, I think that’s the biggest difference,” laughed Watson, who has a shaved head. “As you get into a scheme, the coaching on that end will re-

main the same. You’re going to follow the basic scheme but individual drills will be a little bit different.”

Watson came to Northern Illinois after being named an assistant coach for Youngstown State under new coach Bo Pelini. Before that, he coached defensive backs at Florida Atlantic and spent four years under Pelini at Nebraska.

“There really not much difference,” senior linebacker Boomer Mays said of Watson taking over. “Maybe some terminology but we’re saying the same stuff, so we’ve been on the same page and that’s really good for

us.”

The linebackers said while there has been a little change – mostly in terminology – the core scheme has been the same.

“With (defensive coordinator Jay) Niemann still here, we knew it wasn’t going to be a huge change to what we were doing – maybe a few technique things – but it’s been the same all the way through,” junior linebacker Sean Folliard said.

The Huskies return their top three linebackers, in terms of tackles, from 2014.

come back on the outside with Mays (77 tackles) anchoring the middle of the Huskies’ 4-3 defense.

“With us playing together last year – me, Boomer and (Lemon) had a lot of playing time together – we kind of get into a system where we know where we’re all going to be at and what we’re doing on the field,” said Folliard, who missed the first week of spring practice with an ankle sprain.

Despite having three experienced players in the middle of the Huskies’ defense, even the younger linebackers had played well this spring, Lemon said.

“I think the young guys are stepping up,” said Lemon, who will sit out the Huskie Bowl on Saturday with a minor injury. “Our defense is clicking. Our defense is clicking on all cylinders.”

Lemon and Folliard said Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey told them after he hired Watson that the Huskies were getting a similar coach to Kane.

“One thing I tell them is I’m new so I don’t have much knowledge of them,” Watson said. “Going through the spring was great. Everybody was on the same page, and it’s a chance at a new coach to win a spot.”

Not so for Orland Park’s Mike Sura, relatively speaking.

A White Sox fan, Sura bought 2015 season tickets for his parents, who were unable to attend the opener, which was delayed almost 70 minutes by rain at the start.

The Suras started rooting for Arizona around the time it entered Major League Baseball in 1998. The club was a former longtime spring training co-tenant with the Sox in Tucson, Arizona, where the family sometimes visited.

Sporting a Jay Bell jersey from the D’backs early color scheme days of purple and teal, Sura beamed when the defending Midwest League champion Cougars switched Class-A affiliation from the Cubs to D’backs in September.

Once nicknamed the SilverHawks, South Bend had been Arizona’s lone MWL affiliate until then, but since lured the Cubs.

“Really happy now,” Sura said. “Because I’m not a Cub fan.”

Before the Cubs and D’backs, the Cougars aligned with the Baltimore Orioles, Florida (now Miami) Marlins, Oakland A’s and Kansas City Royals.

“Really, the Kane County Cougars have an exceptional history,” Sura said. “They’ve sent 129 guys to the Major

Leagues, and that’s a lot.”

Now there’s a passionate Cougars fan. That figure stood at 128 until late Wednesday night, when 2009 Cougar Tyler Ladendorf made his MLB debut, driving in two runs as an Oakland second baseman-outfielder.

Cougars center fielder Colin Bray delivered the first hit of the Cougars’ season, a oneout, first-inning double against Cedar Rapids left-hander Mat Batts.

It appeared most fans remained at the ballpark through the rain delay, which tricked the Cougars’ radar. Before the game, club officials said the first serious batch of storms appeared headed for the area at 8:30 p.m.

“We’re hoping to score early, often and get to the fifth inning and go home,” Cougars owner Dr. Bob Froehlich grinned.

The game began under humid conditons as storms passed through the region. Weather prompted opening day postponement elsewhere in the league, as Clinton, West Michigan and Great Lakes each experienced cancellations.

A stiff wind persisted for much of the night, and even sent Cougars reliever Jency Solis’ cap flying when he trotted in from the bullpen during a sixth-inning pitching change.

The forecast looks more favorable for the final two games of the series, set for tonight and Saturday afternoon.

Many fans don’t figure to be fazed either way.

“We just love seeing minor league baseball here,” Hoy said.

Cougars owner Dr. Bob Froehlich beamed about his Opening Day surroundings before the game. The flags, the bunting – the red, white and blue kind, anyway – and everything else associated with ushering in a new baseball season.

“You can’t put it up too soon, you know,” Froehlich said. “It’s nice that it’s finally up, flags and stuff like that.

It’s little stuff, but it makes you feel like it’s [here].”

Central casting Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek and Kernels counterpart Jake Mauer exchanged lineups before the game in a meeting of men with direct and indirect ties to the American League Central Division.

Grudzielanek, a Major League infielder for 15 seasons, played with the Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Indians. Mauer is the older brother of Twins slugger Joe Mauer.

Fun-da-men-tals Mascot Ozzie T. Cougar failed to touch third base and was slow to retreat against his young challengers, falling to 0-1 as an Arizona Diamondbacks-affiliated cat in the Ozzie Race.

Déjà vu Cedar Rapids was the final Western Division club the Cougars faced in 2014, suffering a sweep at the hands of eventual Midwest League champion Kane County in the division finals.

Kane ‘ratcheting up’ intensity in on-ice workouts

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com ST. LOUIS – Patrick Kane didn’t join the Blackhawks on their season-ending road trip, but Joel Quenneville said that his on-ice work is “ratcheting up” back in Chicago.

Quenneville hesitated to say that Kane was taking “full contact,” and said he has yet to be medically cleared to play. But he made it sound like Kane was taking the next step as he recovers from a broken clavicle suffered Feb. 24.

Thursday night’s game against the Blues was the 20th straight Kane has missed.

Blues coach Ken Hitchcock was asked Thursday how different the Hawks are without Kane in the lineup.

“A lot,” he said.

In what ways?

“Every way. It’s easy to play when your focus is on fewer players. They’ve got so many good players, but you can’t check everybody. And one of the things that Chicago has is a sense of timing.

They’ve gotten Cups and wins and playoff-round wins because their key guys have done it when it’s all been on the line. … When you’re missing guys that know how to

perform when it’s on the line, it’s good for the opposition.”

Should the Hawks and Blues meet at some point in the playoffs, and Kane plays, you can be sure the physical Blues will come after him.

But while St. Louis’ Barret Jackman said the Blues would do what they could to limit Kane’s time and space, he said they know better than to take runs at the “slippery” Kane. Perhaps no player in the league is as good at avoiding contact than Kane.

He almost relishes it when you’re running at him, because he’s going to make you look stupid,” Jackman said.

“He’s got such a high hockey IQ, and great skills. He’s going to [make a] backhand pass and spin around you and turn it into a 2-on-0 or a 2-on1.”

Baun back in: Rookie Kyle Baun played his second straight game, again filling in for the injured Brad Richards on the second line. Baun led the Hawks with five hits in his NHL debut Tuesday against Minnesota.

“I like the pace to his game,” Quenneville said. “I thought he had some presence around the puck area, [and] good instincts with and without the puck.”

In February, new Bears coach John Fox said Tillman and linebacker Lance Briggs

had “done a lot for our organization, our football team, as well as our city” and said the two had “been great Bears.”

The Bears selected Tillman, a star at Louisiana-Lafayette, in the second round of the 2003 draft.

He started 13 games as a rookie, setting the tone for an amazing career. He only failed to start one game the rest of the way, finishing with 152 starts in 156 games.

Former Bears scouting director Greg Gabriel said Thursday that Tillman’s college skills were easy to see, and that the development of his footwork and turning made him elite.

He had to work on his technique, Gabriel said, because of his 6-foot-2 height.

“He’s very instinctive and smart, and that’s half the game in the NFL,” Gabriel said. “There isn’t anything he hasn’t seen. When he was

at his best, he was a complete corner. He could play the run. Great ball skills. Great ability to force turnovers with his tackling ability and the way he whacks away at the ball.”

Gabriel said that Tillman’s greatest challenge will be to stay healthy after two consecutive seasons of triceps maladies.

“That body has taken a beating over the years, more so than other DBs,” he said.

“He’s playing on his smarts, more than what’s left in the tank, do you know what I mean?”

Tillman forced 42 career fumbles with the “Peanut Punch” and intercepted 36 passes.

His nine non-offense touchdowns are fourth-most among active players. He was a first-team All-Pro in 2012, a Pro Bowler in 2011 and 2012, and the 2013 Walter Payton Man of the Year.

After 12 years and two Pro Bowls in his legendary Bears career, Charles Tillman is officially gone, having signed a one-year contract with the Carolina Panthers on Thursday.

The cornerback, whose legendary “Peanut Punch” dislodged footballs from wide receivers and made him a fan favorite, was never expected to return to the Bears.

He injured his triceps muscle in the second week of the season, and admitted numerous times afterward he could place elsewhere next season.

Tillman joins Ron Rivera, the Panthers coach who served as his Bears defensive coordinator from 2004 through ’06.

“I think coach Rivera was one of the main reasons why I wanted to be here,” Till-

man told the team’s website.

“He’s a guy that I had a lot of respect for when I was in Chicago. I love his leadership and his qualities as a coach, and he’s done a good job with the Panthers.”

The 34-yearold re-upped with the Bears on a one-year deal last season after interCharles Tillman viewing with former coach Lovie Smith in Tampa Bay. At the end of January, Tillman told the Sun-Times that he’d “like to be in Chicago,” but didn’t sound particularly confident it would happen.

“The Bears have been around for nearly a century and Charles Tillman will go down as one of the best to ever wear blue and orange,” said Bears chairman George McCaskey said in a statement Thursday.

CHARLES – The St. Charles Public Library Foundation will host its second annual Books and Brunch fundraising event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at the St. Charles Country Club, 1250 Country Club Road, St. Charles.

Six local authors will attend the event, which also will feature brunch and a raffle. The local authors will be Stan Banash, Ruth Hull Chatlien, Faly Colaizzi, Annie Hansen, Travis Trasher and Joanne Zienty.

Banash is the author of “Roadside History of Illinois.”

In the book, he describes the state’s diverse history while guiding readers along its highways and byways.

Hull Chatlien has been a writer and editor for 25 years.

Her new novel, “The Ambi-

tious Madame Bonaparte” won a gold medal in the Reader’s Favorite Book Award contest.

Colaizzi is the author of two ghost tales set in St. Charles.

Her stories highlight landmarks, such as the Dunham Castle in Wayne.

Hansen, a Batavia resident, is the author of the Kelly Clark Mystery series, set in Geneva.

The mysteries of her books circle around some of the local legends and real-life places in Geneva.

Elgin resident has chance to win $50K scholarship KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com Burlington Central High School senior Jessica Carter of Elgin is one of 20 Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student national finalists. She will travel to Chicago for the second annual Most Valuable Student Weekend, running Friday, April 24, through Sunday, April 26.

Each finalist will receive an Elks National Foundation college scholarship of at least $20,000. Six will leave with scholarships ranging from $30,000 to $50,000, states a news release.

A total of 19,257 high school seniors applied for an Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student scholarship this year, states the release. Of those, 480 runners-up will receive $4,000 in scholarships.

The top 20 scholars who attend the leadership weekend will have the chance to win a $50,000 scholarship.

Together, the most valuable student scholars have an average gradepoint average of 4.283 on a 4.0 scale and are volunteers and leaders in Jessica Carter their communities.

Granquist competition registration underway KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Registration has begun for the Granquist Music Competition, one of the largest music competition in Illinois, according to a news release.

This year’s event will take place on Saturday, June 27, at Geneva High School, 416 McKinley Ave., Geneva. Teachers are encouraged to enroll students as early as possible. Online applications must be received by Friday, May 29, and mailed applications must be received by Tuesday, May 26.

The competition was established in 1970 by music educator Herb Granquist,

states the release. All contestants will be classified by instrument, age and years of instruction. A first-, second- and thirdplace award will be given in each class.

Solos, duets and ensembles are all encouraged to register. There are three levels of competition: Olympic, Performance and Concert.

Dear Abby: My cousin “Opal” and I grew up together. We were always close. She has gone through some rough times, and I have been trying to help her out.

She has five children (ages 10 to 2) and I have one child who is 13. The fathers of her children are not helpful. I recently completed my education and am looking for work, so money is tight.

Opal doesn’t feed her kids before bringing them over or provide diapers for the little one.

She promises to reimburse me, but rarely does. Most of the time I keep my mouth shut because I know she doesn’t make much as a server. How can I make her understand that even though I have only one child that doesn’t mean I have the money to help her out with her five?

Also, when I baby-sit her children, they are rowdy and destructive. But if I try to raise the subject,

Tell her that before her children come over she is to instruct them to be on their best behavior. Her household may be chaotic because there are no rules – so don’t blame those children for their bad behavior.

When they arrive, tell them that in YOUR house there are rules. Explain clearly what they are and that there are rewards for good behavior. Make clear that if they can’t be good, they won’t be welcomed back without their mother.

If the penalty for drawing the line is that there is tension between you and your cousin, the upside will be that you will be taken advantage of less often.

Treatments can improve the appearance of rosacea Dear Doctor K: I have rosacea, and it makes me very self-conscious. What can I do to make it less noticeable?

Dear Reader: Rosacea is a common, long-lasting skin condition that causes inflammation and redness of the face. (I’ve put a photo of skin affected by rosacea on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

As with many diseases, we don’t know what causes rosacea.

People with the condition are more likely to have high levels of certain natural inflammatory chemicals in their skin. There also is evidence that tiny little insects (dust mites) and a particular type of bacteria living on the skin can trigger rosacea.

Rosacea usually progresses through four stages. In the first stage, a person has flushing and occasional facial redness. In the second stage, there is persistent redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead. By the third stage, small, pus-colored or red bumps appear on the face, along with tiny blood vessels that appear as thin, red lines. In the fourth stage, knobby bumps appear on the nose and the skin on the nose may thicken. Symptoms commonly come and go in cycles.

The good news is that treatments can improve the appear-

Depending on your specific symptoms, your doctor may prescribe: • Antibiotics. Topical antibiotics, which are applied directly to the skin, are usually prescribed first.

You may also be prescribed antibiotics to take by mouth.

• Azelaic acid (finacea). This gel containing dicarboxylic acid is applied directly to the face. It is used to treat the inflammatory pimples of mild to moderate rosacea.

• Beta-blockers and alpha antagonists. These medications may reduce flushing through their effect on blood vessels.

• Estrogen. This female hormone is used when rosacea is aggravated by the hot flashes of menopause, since estrogen treatment reduces the number and severity of hot flashes.

• Laser treatment. This is used to get rid of dilated blood vessels or to remove excess nose tissue.

• Surgical procedures. Surgical shave techniques or skin resurfacing procedures can help remove excess nose tissue.

You can also help control symptoms by recognizing and avoiding things that make your condition worse. Common triggers include hot drinks, alcohol, spicy foods, stress, sunlight and extreme heat or cold. These triggers increase blood flow and cause the small blood vessels in the face to dilate.

Also, select facial cleansers and moisturizers that do not burn, sting, irritate or cause redness when you apply them. Wash your face with lukewarm water and a mild soap. Avoid toners, astringents, scrubs, exfoliating agents and products that contain alcohol or acetone. Hydroxy acids and tretinoin (for example, Retin-A) are very helpful for other skin conditions, but can worsen rosacea.

Finally, use sunscreens and sun blockers regularly and liberally to protect your face.

While rosacea is not a “serious” condition, the embarrassment it causes some people can affect their lives. Fortunately, effective treatments are now readily available.

Overweight people can have an eating disorder Dr. Wallace: My problem is that I am 15 years old and nearly 40 pounds overweight. I admit I eat too much, and a lot of times it is junk food. The school nurse called my mom and had her come in for a conference. She told my mom that she thinks I have an eating disorder and am addicted to food.

I really do like food, and I’ve tried to lose weight, but I can’t seem to stay on a diet. Actually, our whole family is overweight. I eat a lot because I’m hungry all the time, but I don’t think I have an eating disorder.

I’d like your opinion if you think I have an eating disorder. I thought those people with an eating disorder were really skinny. – Nameless, Sulphur, Louisiana Dear Nameless: It’s true that anorexia and bulimia are both eating disorders that result in thinness. But overeating is also an eating disorder and can be just as dangerous and potentially fatal as anorexia and bulimia and can lead to emotional and health problems. If a person overeats on a regular basis and becomes obese because of the extra calories consumed, chances are good that the person has an eating disorder.

Many overeaters have the same excuses that drug addicts have, such as, “Food relieves my pain, tension, stress,” and, “I can stop eating whenever I want to,” and they may even have a “high” from eating.

However, if you have a high, you must have a low. When overeaters get these lows they need a high to pick them up again. An overeater’s solution is food. That’s

Dr. Wallace: I have an unusual problem. I’m a 19-year-old guy and about six months ago my girlfriend broke up with me. I had a hard time getting over this because I really liked her. Now ever since we broke up she has kept in touch with me every week even though she now has a new boyfriend.

I don’t know why she keeps calling to chat, but I do know that it only makes matters worse for me. I can’t ask her why she does this because I’m worried I’d lose her friendship. A bridge contract is a unit composed not only of tricks but also bidding, declarer play, defense, winners and losers. In today’s deal, South is in four spades. What happens after West leads the spade king?

Note that North might raise one heart to two hearts with only three-card support. If he has a minimum opening with 1-3-5-4 distribution, a rebid of two hearts is preferable to two clubs. So South’s jump to four hearts promises at least a five-card suit. With only four hearts, he should make a different rebid, perhaps three notrump with stoppers in the unbid suits, or in one of the other three suits.

South must first count his losers. Here, he has four: two spades, one heart and one club. Then, if he can do it in a reasonable length of time – five or 10 minutes! – he should also count winners. He can see 11: one spade, four hearts, four diamonds and two clubs. So, declarer can make his contract as long as he does not lose those four tricks first. Since he cannot avoid losing tricks to the rounded-suit aces, he must eliminate a spade loser.

Before leading a trump, South must play a diamond to his queen, overtake the diamond jack with dummy’s king, and discard a spade on the diamond ace. Now, with his loser count down to three, he should draw trumps as quickly as possible.
