ST. CHARLES – A tailoring business with more than 35 years of experience has set up shop in St. Charles.

Tailor, Needle & Thread opened its second location in March at 2000 W. Main St. The tailoring and clothing business has had a store at the Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg since 2001. Owner Zim Dalipi wanted to expand and chose St. Charles when he did not find any tailors listed in town.

The business offers alterations for men’s and women’s apparel, ready-to-wear men’s clothing and suits, full custom-tailored clothing, embroidery and tuxedo rentals, Dalipi said.

Dalipi learned his craft from his father, Jimmy Dalipi, who currently works at the St. Charles location. He recommends tailoring for anyone that wants a better fit and look with their clothes.

Dalipi said he differs from dry cleaners that might offer to do alterations.

“I’m an expert in tailoring,” Dalipi said. “I know exactly what needs to be done and the quality of work we give. It speaks for itself.”

Rosemary Leazzo said she will recommend that her cousin who lives in St. Charles go to the new store if he ever needs alterations.

Leazzo, a Buffalo Grove resident, has been a customer at the Tailor, Needle & Thread Woodfield Mall location ever since it opened.

Leazzo said she is petite and always has to have the length of her clothes shortened. She said she never has had to return her garments to the shop a second time after alterations were made. The Dalipis are honest and will tell you if an alternation won’t work, or if a garment will be difficult to fix, Leazzo said.

“They are professional, and they are customer-friendly,” she said. “They just bend

FORTY-FIVE YEARS OF PROGRESS Huntley reflects on his years as a St. Charles library trustee

T. CHARLES – Throughout all the changes the St. Charles Public Library has experienced in the last several decades, there has been one constant: Norm Huntley.

Huntley – who is described as a true leader who has the library’s best interests in mind 24/7 – joined the Board of Trustees 45 years ago this month.

The 77-year-old said he never expected his initial term would lead to such a tenure. One reason kept him seeking re-election, he said.

“I loved it,” Huntley said.

“It was constant progress.”

Indeed.

When Huntley became a trustee in April 1969, the library was – in his word – small.

During his tenure, which included 37 years as board president, the library has been remodeled and expanded, sometimes at the expense of existing homes.

“Houses [were] right where we’re sitting here now,” he said in a room off the lobby.

The houses were either demolished or relocated – an effort that required a lot of coordination, Huntley said. He noted he was familiar with families that were affected because he was principal of nearby Lincoln Elementary School.

Now-retired library director Diana Brown, who was hired under Huntley’s leadership, said he is a good source of library history and why certain decisions were made.

She described him as a consensus builder who has true concern for the library.

“He had such a clear vision of what he wanted the library to be,” Brown said. “He communicated that very well to the board and the staff. I think it was a really successful partnership because of that.”

Those who ask why libraries are needed anymore think libraries are just for books, Huntley said. There is always something going on at the library, he said, naming teen study nights and children’s story times as examples.

“I go back just before World War II,” he said, listing various technology that didn’t exist then. “You see the changes [in libraries] come about as technology advances.”

Huntley said he has been part of a board that wanted to be responsive to the community, which in 1978 voted to convert it from a township library to a library district.

In 2010, voters made another decision regarding the library.

They rejected a $35 million referendum that would nearly double the 55,000-squarefoot facility.

Huntley said he views that outcome as a failure because of taxes – not as a failure for the library. When he sees that the majority of patrons are happy, he said, “You know that something good is

going on.”

As for the library’s future, Huntley said, the board will continue to respond to the community’s wishes.

“We welcome input,” he said.

In addition to being supportive of the St. Charles Library Foundation – which was established under his leadership in 1993 – Huntley always has had a great deal of respect for the staff, Brown said.

Five years ago, the board recognized Huntley by naming the main meeting room the “Norman C. Huntley Meeting Room” – an honor that “indicates how much respect and fondness we have for him,” Brown said.

Huntley stepped down as board president about five years ago because he felt his health would limit him from making the public appearances that the president needed to do as part of the referendum process, said Tory Haines, his successor.

She said she had some “pretty awesome” shoes to fill.

“He has been a great men-

tor to me as far as my position as president,” Haines said. “He’s been very helpful, very supportive, very encouraging to me and at the same time always ready to assist me if he thinks that I should be doing things differently, but always in a kind and supportive way.”

at such St. Charles schools as Munhall and Fox Ridge, retired from his career in public education in 1994, he said.

His term on the library board expires next spring, but he isn’t saying whether he’ll seek another six years.

“Let’s call it an unknown,” he said.

Settler’s Hill project approaches second milestone

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County is on the verge of checking off a second major milestone regarding the future recreational use of Settler’s Hill.

County Board member Mike Donahue, R-Geneva, told the Development Committee on Wednesday that the agreement between the county, Kane County Forest Preserve District and Waste Management of Illinois is ready to go through the approval process.

The 18-page document establishes the roles and responsibilities of each party and how the three will work together, Donahue said. He said it is the second major milestone in the redevelopment of Settler’s Hill, a closed landfill in Geneva. The first significant accomplishment was the approval of the master plan in October 2012, he said.

The plan calls for the creation of trails, a hilltop observatory, a winter recreation area, golf course and an outdoor music venue along Kirk

Road.

Donahue has said that goals for this year include opening the summit to the public by creating an inexpensive footpath.

Construction on golf course improvements and a cross-country course/fitness trail system should begin next spring, he has said.

Adopting the agreement should “clear the way” to proceed with the plans, Donahue said.

He said indemnity language was the sticking point in the agreement.

“That logjam needed to be broken,” he said.

Under the proposed agreement, Donahue said, the county has the same protections it always has had.

The Development Committee forwarded the agreement to the next committee in the approval process with a request to highlight sections of the document, as it is written in legalese.

Also Wednesday, the Transportation Committee received an update on the Anderson Road project in Elburn.

Staff provided photographs of workers pouring the base for a box culvert and pictures of them setting reinforcing bars and forms for the walls of a box culvert.

The project will extend Anderson Road, which currently stops at the intersection with Prairie Valley Street, to the south. Plans include a bridge that will cross the railroad tracks in town.

That will provide an alternative route in Elburn, as drivers often are forced to wait at the tracks on Route 47.

The fee is $98 for residents and $148 for nonresidents.

Harner’s closed for co-owner’s funeral today over.

Kane County Sheriff’s deputies and Big Rock emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene at 5:05 p.m. Sunday. Harner was taken to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, where he was pronounced dead.

Harner was not wearing a helmet, authorities said. A funeral procession for Harner will be at 9:30 a.m. today, from The Daleiden Mortuary, 220 N. Lake St., Aurora, to St. Rita of Cascia Catholic Church, 750 W. Old Indian Trail, Aurora, at 10 a.m.

A concelebrated Mass will be offered by Monsignor Robert Willhite and the Rev. Oscar Cortes.

Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Harner’s will reopen its doors at 5:30 a.m. Friday. The family could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Harner, 44, of Aurora, was killed Sunday in an ATV crash on Scott Road in Big Rock Township. According to the Kane County Sheriff’s Department, Harner was operating his ATV along the side of Scott Road and struck a culvert, causing the ATV to roll or flip

GENEVA – Craig W. Larson, 59, of Batavia, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva. He was born June 18, 1954, in Geneva, the son of Ernest Wayne and Betty Jean (nee Jackson) Larson. He was united in marriage to Laura Bergeson on June 8, 2012, in Batavia.

Craig grew up in Batavia and attended Batavia schools. He was employed by Continental Automation in St. Charles.

Before that, he worked 25 years for Furnas Electric/Siemens in Batavia. He was an avid Cubs fan, enjoyed NASCAR and loved to golf, especially on Wednesdays with the Batavia Moose Lodge 682 Golf League. On May 18, 2002, he scored a hole-in-one on number nine at Valley Green Golf Course.

He was very well known and liked throughout the community. He had a contagious laugh and loved to tell jokes. He enjoyed hanging out with his friends and family. He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Laura; a son, Jeremy Larson; a grandson, Dominick DiDonato; a stepdaughter, Hannah Bussie; his parents, Wayne and Betty Larson; siblings, Roberta (Jim) Saloga, Gary Larson, Kim (Matt) Vilim and Kris (Steve) Bellavia; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ernest and Elizabeth Larson and Bert and Marion Jackson; and a niece in infancy.

A celebration of his life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Batavia VFW Hangar, 645 S. River St., Batavia, followed by a luncheon.

Ken Ramsey will officiate.

Geneva approves $89M budget for fiscal 2014-15

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen approved a city budget of more than $89 million for the 201415 fiscal year this week, following a public hearing in which no member of the public spoke.

The new spending plan reflects nearly $91 million in revenue, officials said. That is a $4.5 million increase over last year’s budgeted revenue of $86.5 million, records show.

Mayor Kevin Burns said the new budget was balanced.

“As always, it’s responsible. It’s forward-thinking,” Burns said. “It respects the wishes, the intents and the expectations of the citizens and business owners.”

Burns said additional revenue and expenditures in the budget include $4.75 million third-level commuter parking deck, a capital project largely funded by a grant.

In presenting the new budget, City Administrator Mary McKittrick said the plan re-

flects a spending increase of $4.5 million or 5 percent over the previous year’s expenses, which were budgeted at $85 million, officials said.

Among the budget challenges the city faced were federal and state mandates and constraints, national and regional economic conditions, issues with collective bargaining, declining equalized assessed values and decline and lay in state shared revenues.

Other issues McKittrick reported were rising fuel and power costs, aging infrastructure and equipment, as well as a moderately high debt level of nearly $52 million. The city’s operating budgets were held as close to zero expenditure increases as possible, but included an increase in costs for public safety pension liability, fuel, liability insurance, group health insurance and wage increases for contracted and noncontracted employees.

McKittrick reported that staff held 24 budget-related

meetings to come up with strategies to control costs while still providing quality services.

These included continuing a general hiring freeze and a voluntary furlough program, not giving education reimbursements, limiting professional development and overnight travel, deferring and scaling back capital projects and reducing nonemergency overtime.

The largest source of revenue for the city’s general fund – a portion of the budget that pays for most of Geneva’s day-to-day expenses – comes from sales taxes: 29 percent or $500,000.

Property taxes of more than $4.5 million account for 26 percent of the general fund budget. The total property tax levy of $6.3 million includes $1.8 million for debt service, officials said.

The increase in the levy will increase by $4.62 a month for an average Geneva home valued at $350,000, officials said.

NORTH AURORA – Residents can expect to see smoother roads ahead later this year.

“The village has committed to invest $2.5 million in road improvements for the upcoming year without needing to borrow funds,” North Aurora Village President Dale Berman said Wednesday in his State of the Village Address.

His address was part of

a networking event at Oak Street Restaurant sponsored by the Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Berman first served as North Aurora village president from 1985 to 1989 and returned to the office in 2009, when he was Dale Berman elected to succeed Village President John Hansen, who did not run for re-election.

Berman was re-elected last

year with no opposition.

The village also will undertake water main replacement projects this year, he said, including the replacement of backyard water mains in the neighborhood just west of Route 31 at State Street.

“This project is unique because the original water and sewer mains are located in the backyards of 37 homes,” Berman said. “These mains were installed 60 years ago, with no easements. A recent water main break highlighted the need to relocate these mains

A program aimed to help homeless and abused mothers is underway in Kane County.

The Movers for Moms Drive involves collecting personal care items for mothers in shelters.

This year, every U.S. location of the Two Men and a Truck moving company is participating, including Wendy and Alex Petrusha’s North Aurora-based franchise.

Wendy Petrusha has set up eight collection sites in Kane County through local businesses and schools.

Donations will be accepted through May 5, then the items will be picked up and dropped off at the Lazarus House in St. Charles in time for Mother’s Day on May 11.

Lazarus House serves homeless and at-risk residents from the Tri-Cities and western rural Kane County, according to its website.

Donation items can include travel-size soaps, shampoos, razors, hair styl-

ing products, nail polish, lip gloss, socks and light robes.

A few bags of toiletries and travel-size items already

have been donated at the Rejoice Lutheran Church of Geneva, said Julie Douglas, the church’s communications ministry director.

Church leaders agreed to collect donations because they know Wendy Petrusha through one of the church members and the cause was a perfect fit, Douglas said.

The church likes to get involved in projects that serve the local community and has helped the Lazarus House in the past.

Lazarus House really appreciates the drive, said Donna Bauer, the house’s Volunteer & Special Events Coordinator. The organization served an average of 35 women in 2013 and has served 20 women since January 2014.

Bauer explained that women don’t stay at Lazarus House for only one night, but move in and stay until they find independent living.

“What wonderful sentiment for them to think of the ladies,” she said of the drive’s organizers. “We’re very grateful to them for doing this work.”

Deputy clerk Ward no Plan commissioners longer county employee debate proposal BATAVIA

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Plan commissioners Wednesday debated over plans for an industrial park on land along Kirk Road originally proposed for town houses.

Plan commissioner Ed Weiss voiced his opposition to the land being used for an industrial park.

“I’m very uncomfortable with the change,” Weiss said.

“It will change the whole character of the area.”

At press time, commissioners had not yet voted on the proposal.

Neighboring homeowners also have voiced their opposition to the plan.

Plan commissioner Gene Schneider voiced his support for the proposed industrial park, although he wants to make sure the neighboring homes will be buffered from it.

“I don’t think it will have the negative impact that some people think,” Schneider said. “We have to make sure they would buffer the property the way we expect it to be. It definitely has to be buffered to the hilt.”

City staff has recommended approval of the industrial park plans.

“With proper land design and land use limitations, residential property and industrial property can be protected from each other,” City Planning and Zoning Officer

Joel Strassman told plan commissioners.

The 56-acre property, known as Prairie Commons, is on the east side of Kirk Road at Wind Energy Pass.

City officials in 2005 annexed the property.

The original development included residential zoning on the eastern 36 acres, with 242 town houses proposed.

The western 20 acres was to be zoned general commercial.

The Missner Group now proposes to build two large industrial buildings on the entire 56-acre property.

One building would be on the eastern part of the property and would be 495,000 square feet, he said.

The second building would be along Kirk Road and would be 300,000 square feet.

A financial analysis done

by Batavia city staff showed that 775,000 square feet of industrial space would generate about $268,600 in annual revenues.

Under another proposal, 242 manufacturing units and 18 acres retail would generate estimated annual revenues of $1,757,800.

The development as proposed would require an amendment to the comprehensive plan, an amended annexation agreement and rezoning before The Missner Group could proceed further with the proposal.

GENEVA – A deputy clerk who was suspended last month for using the county’s email server to send campaign-related materials no longer works for Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham’s office, officials said.

Kane County Human Resources Director Sheila McCraven confirmed Wednesday that Jeff Ward of Geneva no longer was a county employee as of April 1. McCraven said the paperwork connected to Ward states he was “termed,” which does not indicate whether he quit or was fired.

Late last week, Cunningham would not confirm or deny Ward’s employment status. Instead, Cunningham said Ward’s employment was a “personnel issue that will be straightened out in a day or two.”

Cunningham has not responded to numerous messages seeking comment.

Ward did not return a message seeking comment.

Ward was both an employee at the clerk’s office and a campaign volunteer for Cunningham in his bid for the Republican nomina-

tion in the March 18 primary against County Board member Mark Davoust.

Cunningham won the contest, and if there is no Democratic challenger he will run unopposed in November.

It would be Cunningham’s fourth term. At issue is a March 12 email from Ward, sent at 9:45 a.m. using his Kane County email a c c o u n t , WardJeff@ Jeff Ward co.kane.il.us regarding a correction in Cunningham’s financial disclosure statement.

The email was sent to Tom Newman, deputy director of campaign disclosure for the Illinois State Board of Elections. Ward then sent a copy to Cunningham on his county email account, cunninghamjohn@co.kane.il.us.

Ward had said he was on his break when he sent the emails.

State election law and the county’s own ethics ordinance do not allow the use of taxpayer-supported materials for political purposes, officials said.

ment of the state election law is through the local state’s attorney. Davoust filed a complaint with county ethics adviser Grant Wegner.

In an email, Wegner said his preliminary investigation shows that it appeared Ward violated two provisions of the county’s ethics ordinance, engaging in prohibited political activities during compensated time, and using county resources.

Wegner referred the complaint to Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon for review. McMahon said he will not discuss potential or pending investigations.

Cunningham said though Ward was a volunteer in his re-election campaign, using the county’s email system was wrong.

He suspended Ward for five days without pay.

The Friday before the primary, Cunningham said Ward had offered to resign, but that Cunningham would not accept the resignation.

According to the county’s online employee wage and salary data for 2013, Ward was employed at the clerk’s office as an applications analyst for $47,999.90 a year.

According to the latest data available from the National Institutes of Health, an estimated 2.9 million Americans are living with “low vision.” This term is a catchall phrase for sight that cannot be corrected to (near-)normal with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. Although it ranges from simply having blurry vision to more serious problems (such as double vision), the immediate consequences of low vision are an inability to perform daily activities such as reading a book or newspaper, crossing the street safely, or cooking a meal.

While medicine or surgery does not offer a cure, there are some practical steps that can be taken to maximize remaining sight. These may involve magnifying devices, better lighting, or reading-assisting technology. P.S. The number of Americans suffering from low vision is expected to increase 72 percent by 2030, when the last of the Baby Boomers turns 65.

The Teen Writers and Artists Project has been helping teen artists for seven years. Wordplay in the west suburbs – including the Kane County area – has existed for one year. Diana and other teaching artists at TWAAP saw the need for a traveling open mic so that teens could connect with other writers and artists. According to Diana, the first west suburban event was held in Wheaton.

Diana said the teachers were amazed at the enthusiastic attendance for the Wordplays. It now takes place on a weekly basis at different venues, rotating between Waterstreet Studios in Batavia and Marquee Youth Stage in St. Charles. Organizers are currently looking for a new

home in the Elgin area.

Having gone to many of these events myself, I can personally say the sponsors and teachers have created a revolutionary environment for teens to share their poetry, stories and experiences.

Diana is the driving force behind these events.

As executive director, her job includes organizing the venues, inviting the featured performers, feeding the teen poets who attend, prepping workshops and fundraising. All of this keeps Diana incredibly busy, but she still finds time to enjoy the events, she said.

When asked what her favorite Wordplay event has been, Diana laughed and said “it’s always the last one.”

She lists the Louder Than a Bomb event “Slammin’ The Sun Down”; Ethan Viets Vanlear’s Wordplay feature; and Buddy Wakefield’s recent visit to a Wordplay night as favorites.

My name is Micah Andersen. I am a poet, a writer and a senior looking to make my mark on the world. I am an intern here at the Kane County Chronicle and am planning to write four columns, including the one you are reading now, before the end of my internship.

One of the poetry events I participate in is Wordplay, a weekly writing and teaching event for teens in the area.

Local Wordplay events take place in Batavia, St. Charles and Elgin.

Each night begins with a writing workshop by one of the teaching artists, followed by open mic time and closing with a featured poet or performance. Wordplay is more than open mic time, though, and it is more than a workshop.

It is a safe space where teens from the area come together to share their stories.

Library may increase hours, adopt merit-based pay system

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva library patrons likely will have more time to check out books and movies, as officials are poised to extend the time the library stays open on Fridays and Sundays by one hour on each day.

The board is expected to vote on the issue at a special meeting 6 p.m. today at the library, 127 James St. Library board President Esther Steel said the proposal is for the library to close at 6 p.m. Fridays and 5 p.m.

change,” Steel said. “Our patrons come home from work on Friday night, and they want to go to the library.

Another agenda item for the special meeting is action on “employee compensation or performance” following a closed session on personnel and property acquisition.

Steel said she could not comment on the employee issue because it involves personnel. Steel said she also could not comment on whether the property acquisition had to do with a new appraisal of the Sixth Street School

property – a possible site for a new library.

Board members also are expected to vote on a proposed policy for merit pay increases for employees. Steel said the library was looking to have pay raises be tied to merit instead of cost of living.

“All employees will be evaluated, and all their raises will be based on their performance,” Steel said. She said she did not know what employees thought about that proposal.

The board is also expected to act on a salary schedule for employees, approve a revised family leave policy, general personnel changes and a revised policy on background checks.

OPINIONS Gotta call my doctor to avoid senioritis I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. This week I officially began my last quarter of high school. It’s hard to believe how fast this year – and especially these last few months – have gone by. While I may have nine more weeks of classes, my personal and real condition will make it very hard to concentrate.

This condition is very common, arguably an epidemic, but there is only one seasonal cure, prolonging its duration unnecessarily. Its symptoms include daydreaming, lack of energy, increased socialization and almost constant griping about daily tasks. Survival rates are

Yes, those of us of a certain age (at least the ripe old age of 17, like me) have all experienced this at some point during our last year of high school. Some younger kids claim to catch it prematurely, though these claims are unsubstantiated.

The cause of this disease is anticipation of the future,

mixed with a long stretch of previous preparatory achievement. It is believed that the warmer weather helps some instances along.

My particular case started showing symptoms a few weeks ago, a lot later than some and not terribly earlier than the rest.

I’m proud of myself for holding out so long – many of my peers proved more vulnerable to the disease, and I was able to fight it for months. On days when I have tons to do, I just want to lie down and take a nap. Instead of being the master homework-planner I once was, I’ve turned to binge homework and study sessions. Tempo-

rary relief may come with looming deadlines and tests.

The only problem is that I’m busier than ever! I have pit orchestra rehearsal every day for over two hours, college plans to finalize and two summer jobs starting, all with AP tests and finals right around the corner. I know I have to push forward for the next six weeks before I can sit back and relax, but it’s just so hard!

My condition isn’t all bad.

I’ve recently come to appreciate all of my high school experiences and how they’ve shaped and taught me. I can now tolerate some people that I may have not always liked. I like to think that this

time has brought high school full circle.

I’m one of the lucky ones – my prognosis seems good.

On May 25, I’m sure I’ll finally feel some relief. Until then, I’ll try to keep my eye on the prize, or should I say diploma?

To stay in line, I’ll have to remind myself of what’s to come – the dread of realizing that this fall I’ll be a freshman once again.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Buying election To the Editor: The conservative Roberts’ court has eviscerated what remained of the campaign finance laws after the 2010 Citizens United ruling, thereby ensuring that wealthy donors and major corporations can elect their favorite politicians.

They can buy the elections. And, if that fails, they can hire an army of lobbyists to push their favorite

legislation to secure government subsidies and tax loopholes. The money they save by dodging taxes can be spent on the next election cycle to buy another election.

What ever happened to “one man, one vote”? I guess if you’re rich, you get more democracy. In the U.S. we have the best government money can buy.

STUDENT KEEPS ON TRUCKIN’ St. Charles resident’s design chosen to grace back of Seigle’s delivery trucks

S

t. Charles resident Tyler Courtney remembers visiting the former Seigle’s lumber yard on Randall Road in St. Charles as a youngster.

Life has come full-circle for the 24-year-old Elgin Community College student. His design was chosen to be used on the backs of eight delivery trucks for the Elgin-based Seigle’s Cabinet Center.

Courtney’s design was chosen out of seven entries submitted by ECC students.

Courtney, who is president of ECC’s Spartan Design Club, is studying graphic design and graduates from ECC in May. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf spoke to Courtney about his winning design, along with Seigle’s President Mark Seigle.

Schelkopf: How did you come up with the concept for your design?

Courtney: The backs of their trucks were just painted red up to this point. And they told us to come up with concepts. They really left it open-ended. They told us to go at it.

That’s where the idea to have a person in the back of the truck, with boxes behind them, that was where my concept came in.

We kind of kept it a little open-ended, so the client had room to put in their little personal touches, like their phrase and their theme and stuff like that.

Schelkopf: How did Seigle’s work with you on the project?

Courtney: They told me that they wanted to use the catch phrase “Get Cookin’.” And they were thinking about having their own employees in the back dressed in kitchen garb.

So, from there we had to set up the photo shoot. Mark brought in a photographer, and he and I did the photo shoot.

He told me, “I have eight employees and eight trucks. Do you think that’s doable?”

I told him, yeah, we can definitely do that.

It’s going to be an individual design for each truck.

Because it’s such a big image and you need such a high resolution, I had to take for each one of the trucks three different images, three different photographs, and put them all together.

There’s a total of eight designs featuring eight different employees.

Schelkopf: I understand this was the first time you had directed a photo shoot. Did you feel overwhelmed?

Courtney: It was definitely nerve-wracking at first, not so much because I didn’t think I could do it, but more so because this was a really big opportunity for me and I wanted to do everything I could possibly do to show myself off.

It’s a big client, and it’s a name that I’ve known my whole life growing up here.

Schelkopf: What was the biggest challenge of the project?

Courtney: Making sure that all the seams aligned. You have to make sure that everything lines up perfect.

Schelkopf: Would you like to do more projects like this in the future?

Courtney: Yes. It really pushed me. The more I can learn, the more opportunities I have.

Schelkopf: Mark, what do you like about the design?

Mark Seigle: It’s exactly what we wanted.

We wanted people to take notice, and they have.

My dining companion ordered the Seared Ahi Tuna Salad ($15) layered with mango papaya salsa and avocado. The searing on the tuna was perfection, and the fruit gave the salad a citrusy zest that reinvigorated the tuna. The dish is a perfect choice for outdoor dining as it is healthy, cool and refreshing.

Don’t expect entrée leftovers from Isacco’s Kitchen; the dishes have just enough to stave off hunger, but not enough to put you into food coma. My dining companion and I each finished the complimentary bread and may as well have licked our plates clean.

Other dishes that caught my eye were the fried dates and beet salad ($10) with goat cheese and balsamic dressing; butternut squash ravioli ($12) with salsiccia and creamy asiago sauce; Ossobuco ravioli ($14) with Italian bacon, sage-butter sauce and pistachio; and the mushroom risotto ($14) with chicken, to name a few.

During our inaugural visit to Isacco’s, our waiter told us to start from the top of the menu and on subsequent visits work our way down, because – as first-timers – we would probably be back. At Isacco’s, that’s a commitment worth honoring.

hat sets Isacco’s Kitchen in St. Charles apart from other Italian restaurants in the area is the food. The family-owned restaurant serves recipes hailing from Northern Italy, a pleasant differentiation from the usual southern-Italian cuisine served at most Italian eateries.

Isacco’s dinner menu items include homemade duck ravioli, with sage, butter, smoked prosciutto and Parmigianino; Berkshire pork chop Milanese on a saffron risotto; and braised short ribs cannelloni with sautéed spinach and mushroom in a port reduction.

A cheery, yellow building situated on a side-street behind downtown St. Charles’ busy Route 64, Isacco’s Kitchen has an outdoor dining area that is a perfect spot to eat and drink in the warmer months. The restaurant has covered outdoor dining with ivory curtains that sway in the breeze, in addition to its cobbled patio decorated by a canopy of café lights.

A quaint, relaxing atmosphere awaits inside. The bar area exudes rustic charm with earthy features such as wood and a Napa Valley wine barrel anchoring the center of the room.

The relaxed vibe continues around the corner into the intimate dining room.

Isacco’s is comparable in price to St. Charles’ other Italian restaurants, with entrée prices ranging from $18 to $28 for dinner. If that’s too expensive, then visit for lunch. You can get some of the same entrees for less.

Isacco’s dishes are made to order and use fresh ingredients, including hand-made pasta.

My dining companion and I visited for lunch on a Friday and had the place to ourselves. The service was impeccable, and the food matched. The restaurant also has an extensive wine list.

Our table was fit with a brown bag filled with a few pieces of warm bread and a scoop of butter on the side.

Each menu item is thoughtfully prepared and creative. I ordered the Crab Ravioli Diablo with shrimp and scallops in a spicy vodka sauce, which is available on the lunch menu for $18 and on the dinner menu for $26. BATAVIA – Statistician Edward Tufte will show that the gap between art and mathematics is smaller than one may think. Tufte will use the computational visualization methods developed by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman to create cerebral works of art.

Beginning Saturday, April 12, Tufte will show many of his pieces at Fermilab in Batavia, for a 10-week exhibit illuminating Feynman’s diagrams, which still define how physicists visualize the phenomena they study, according to a news release.

Made of stainless steel, Tufte’s sculptures bring Feynman’s diagrams to three-dimensional life.

Tufte’s installation will fill the second-floor art gallery in Fermilab’s Wilson Hall and will open on the evening of April 12, with a special lecture at 7 p.m. and a concert at 8 p.m. by Huun-Huur-Tu, a group of throat singers from the small region of Tuva.

Tufte’s installation, titled “The Cognitive Art of Feynman Diagrams,” is the centerpiece of a visual and auditory Feynman celebration at the laboratory, one that will include a lecture, a concert and the display of a van and an Airstream trailer, also known as the “Interplanetary Explorer.” The Fermilab site is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week.

Tufte himself will be available to kick off the exhibit with a reception in Fermilab’s Wilson Hall from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 16.

“This is going to be an extraordinary set of events here at the laboratory,” said Fermilab Director Nigel Lockyer in the release. “It’s an honor for us to host an artist and designer of Edward Tufte’s prominence and to be able to tie his exhibit into a larger retrospective of the life and work of Richard Feynman.”

Feynman’s friend, Ralph Leighton – as a special part of Fermilab’s Feynman celebration – will deliver a 30-minute talk before the April 12 concert, titled “Richard Feynman’s Fantasy: The Marvelous Stamps of Tannu Tuva.”

Leighton also will bring with him the famous “Feynman van.” Purchased by Feynman in 1975, the Dodge Tradesman Maxivan is adorned with images of Feynman diagrams. Feynman used the van not only to commute to and from work when he was a professor at the California Institute of Technology, but also to explore remote areas of the American West with his family during summer vacations.

After Feynman’s death in 1988, Leighton inherited the van and used it in 1993 to transport the Tuvan throat singers during their first tour of California.

The Feynman van, along with Tufte’s “Interplanetary Explorer,” will be on display outside Wilson Hall for the duration of Tufte’s exhibit and can be viewed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week.

There’s nothing cheap about Fox Valley Repertory’s ‘Dozen’

ox Valley Repertory’s production of “Cheaper by the Dozen” is an invitation into the living room and lives of one extraordinary family.

Based on the beloved American memoir by siblings Frank and Ernestine Gilbreth, the coming-of-age comedy – adapted by Christopher Sergel – is a relatable story of teenage rebellion, selfishness, sacrifice, love and the preciousness of time spent, even if efficiently, together as a family.

Directed by Vance Smith, the show begins with two of the older Gilbreth siblings (played

by Grace Etzkorn and Josh Greiveldinger) looking back on their childhood during the time immediately preceding the death of the family patriarch and king of efficiency, Frank Gilbreth Sr. (Michael Dailey), in the 1920s.

The title of the biographical story comes from a favorite joke made by the childrens’ father when asked why he and his wife (played by Laura Sturm) had so many kids. He would respond, “You know, they come cheaper by the dozen!”

With 12 kids to wrangle, Frank Gilbreth Sr. rules the roost by means of dictatorship posing as “democracy.” His “what-I-say-goes” parenting style is relatable, as well as humorous, especially as the eldest daughters start taking stock in the problems that plague any angst-fueled teenage girl – boys.

The show employs 13 cast members and 10 understudies as Fox Valley Rep’s largest acting company in its history of professional productions, according to artistic director John Gawlik.

Eleven actors hail from Fox Valley Rep’s own performing arts academy, including Nathan Castagna (Fred), 12, of Geneva; and Erika (Lillian), 12, and Keira Denker (Jackie), 10, of St. Charles.

Etzkorn delivers a natural and distinct performance as Ernestine, breathing life, subtle variation and well-timed humor into her role. It comes as no surprise that the high school junior also recently appeared on the NBC television series “Chicago Fire” as Sophie; she is a talented actress who has the goods. Kelsey Sante, who has trained with Acting Studio Chicago and Columbia College, also delivers an adept performance as Anne, the eldest daughter.

The final scene is weighted by the foretold gravitas of events to come, especially since many of the characters are unaware of what is about to happen or even that their father is sick. The emotionality of the scene was not lost, which a quick scan of the crowd confirmed. Audience members wiped away tears over an inevitable and greatly feared part of life – the death of a parent.

ELGIN – Elgin Community College will host the Chicago Latino Film Festival for the second year in a row.

The film festival will run from Thursday, April 10, to Sunday, April 13. The festival, which celebrates 30 years this year, is sponsored

by ECC, the city of Elgin and the city of Elgin Cultural Arts Commission.

All films will be screened at the college, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. Opening ceremonies will commence with a reception at 5 p.m. April 10, in Building E (the University and Business Center). By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The second week of April is premature to say the defending Upstate Eight Conference River champions are on the ropes, but the St. Charles North softball team isn’t taking its plight lightly, either.

North lost its second game in a row to open the conference season Wednesday as crossover opponent Waubonsie Valley thoroughly outplayed the North Stars in a 6-2 Warriors victory.

“It’s pretty upsetting,” North catcher Emily Brodner said. “I don’t know if we’ve ever lost two games right away in our conference, but it gives us the power and the drive to come out in our next game to be on top and be on our game. It just gives us the fuel to do better tomorrow.”

North’s offense was prolific in a trio of wins to open the season, but the North Stars hit a rut in a 3-2 loss to Neuqua Valley on Tuesday and remained in the doldrums against Waubonsie Valley right-hander Shannon Hohman, who held North to one hit through the first six innings before a too little, too late rally in the bottom of the seventh.

“You’ve got to be deserving of victory, and we haven’t been deserving of victory the last two games,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “If we would have somehow pulled out a win yesterday or came back and won here, we would have stolen wins.

We’re a much better team than we’ve demonstrated the last two days, but it’s early.”

Like North, Waubonsie (5-3, 1-1 UEC Valley) was coming off a loss the day before, a 4-0 setback to St. Charles East. But the Warriors’ offense sprung to life against North (3-2, 0-2 UEC River) as Waubonsie notched three hits apiece in the first and second innings off North senior Sabrina Rabin.

The Warriors finished with 11 hits – all in the first five innings – as Waubonsie scored five unanswered runs to pull away from a 1-1 tie at the end of the first inning.

“I think they just came back with a fresh approach today, just cleared their minds, and that’s what we’ve been working on with them, just letting it go,” Waubonsie coach Valerie Wood said of her team’s bounce-back performance. “They let it go today. They were just relaxed at the plate, ready to hit, ready to play.”

A common thread in North’s losses Tuesday and Wednesday was too many popouts and lazy flyballs, making for easy outs for the opposition. That’s uncharacteristic for a North lineup with ample proven firepower.

“These girls are as talented as it gets, as experienced as it gets,” Poulin said. “We have to get them back to being confident

Poulin had an extended postgame heartto-heart with the team afterward on the outfield grass, and players followed with a long chat among themselves before departing. Brodner, who had two of North’s three hits on the day, said the players pledged to do some soul-searching leading up to today’s game at Wheaton Warrenville South.

“Individually, we’re thinking of something we each can work on,” Brodner said.

“We’re going to clarify it tomorrow so everyone knows what each other’s going to work on, and we’re going to help each other so we can come out and win tomorrow.”

On an otherwise agitating afternoon, a prom invitation involving two of his favorite athletes helped lighten Poulin’s spirits. Johnny Davern – who Poulin coached during basketball season – is asking North second baseman Kaitlyn Waslawski to the dance.

“Johnny Davern’s one of the more impressive people I’ve come across coaching, as a student, as a student-athlete, as a teammate,” Poulin said. “He’s a very impressive young man, and Kaitlyn is along the same lines, honestly. … They know how to balance academics and athletics and social, and they’re mature kids. I hope they have a good time at prom.”

Collalti finished with three hits, a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. The Saints got another three-hit day from shortstop Olivia Cheatham, who also scored three times. Senior center fielder Tess Hupe, sophomore right fielder Katie Kolb and freshman second baseman Jordan Hieber each picked up two hits.

“We’re a very strong offensive team,” Collalti said.

“We’ve been doing well since the start of last year, and coach Horan’s done a really nice job of pushing and pushing and keep having us working toward extra runs all the time. Everyone was really excited for the game today, so everyone was pumped and bringing their best.”

When you put it all together, the win showed off East’s all-around strength.

“It was real solid,” Horan said. “I was really pleased with most aspects of the game. There’s little stuff we’re going to work on. That’s nice because you don’t want to go into the conference season thinking you have tons of stuff to work on. We’ve got to get better. We will get better.

And it’s nice that we’re still learning about what we need to work on.”

GENEVA – A Cougars reliever blew a save for the fourth time this season after a starter turned in the staff’s fourth outing of at least five innings.

A quiet clubhouse absorbed in Wednesday afternoon’s 7-4, 10-inning loss to Fort Wayne suggested otherwise, but Cougars pitchers remain primed to collaborate on the ups and downs.

“In the clubhouse. After the game. After there’s hits – if there’s pitchers in the dugout,” right-hander Paul Blackburn said. “Before, after, during. Pretty much all the time.”

That open forum gains extra importantance in the early season considering the Cougars (3-3) still are evaluating personnel.

Righty Jose Arias, who surrendered a game-tying solo home run in the ninth and three unearned runs in the 10th, provides one example. He’s pitching out of the bullpen for the first time after starting for his first four seasons in the parent Cubs’ system.

“We really hadn’t seen everybody in spring training as a staff,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “Early in the season, you’re trying to feel your way through the players and see what we’ve got. To be in every game does feel good, and it does help out and these guys have played really well.”

A supplemental first-round draft pick in 2012, Blackburn kept the Cougars afloat with five innings of two-run, twohit ball, striking out four and walking two.

Johnson wanted Blackburn to work from his fastball more, but quickly reiterated players were here to learn, anyway.

Expect to see more balanced doses of Blackburn’s breaking ball in his next start.

“Give the guy credit. He’s got a good feel of everything, and he really competes,” John-

son said. “He’s an ultimate competitor, and that’s going to get you through a lot of tough innings and tough situations no matter if you are pitching backwards or not.”

Fort Wayne (2-4) stole five bases and hit two home runs, including catcher Dane Phillips’ one-out solo shot in the ninth. An outfield error fueled the TinCaps’ rally in the 10th.

David Bote (double), Jake Hannemann (triple) and Jacob Rogers (home run) delivered extra-base hits for the Cougars, whose biggest offensive moment came when a ball just snuck over the infield.

Eleven years, 11 months and 15 days after anyone named “Dunston” played a professional organized baseball game in Illinois, left fielder Shawon Dunston Jr. dusted off the annals and fared better than his namesake.

Dunston Jr.’s two-run single in the seventh inning provided a 4-2 lead, as he hit a fastball that narrowly cleared the reach of leaping TinCaps second baseman Fernando Perez.

“Got lucky. Got out in front.

A little anxious,” Dunston Jr. said. “Got lucky, got in and got two RBIs, but I mean it doesn’t really matter now if our team lost. All that matters is wins and losses.”

Dunston’s father, a former longtime Cubs infielder, could attest to the latter part of that statement on April 24, 2002. Playing for the San Francisco Giants against his former team at Wrigley Field, the elder Dunston went 0 for 4 against Matt Clement, Joe Borowski and Antonio Alfonseca.

Many of the Cougars were one rung away from the top of the organizational ladder at Short-A Boise last season. Recognizing the steady climb at hand helps them put days like Wednesday in perspective.

“We’ve played together two years in a row now with a lot of guys on this team,” Blackburn said. “And they do their job. They do a great job at it, and I think that will help us in the long run.”

Fly away, home run Speaking after Tuesday’s 12-inning win – the Cougars’ first victory in a home opener since 2010 – manager Mark Johnson cited the cold, damp conditions as a roadblock for home runs.

“You’d have to shoot a missile to get one out of there,” he said.

A few hours later, solid contact into the wind and sunlight did the trick. After TinCaps right fielder Jose Carlos Urena launched a two-run blast in the top of the second, Cougars first baseman Jacob Rogers smacked the first pitch of the bottom half over the right field fence to tie the game.

Fort Wayne catcher Dane Phillips tied the game with a solo homer in the ninth.

Fort Wayne changed its nickname from “Wizards” to “TinCaps” five seasons ago, a nod to the preferred, cooking pot headgear of renowned pioneer John “Johnny Appleseed” Chapman.

The team sought a new identity for the 2009 season and solicited name suggestions from the community. Chapman died near Fort Wayne in 1845.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East softball coach Kelly Horan is a little superstitious.

So when asked what she thought of senior pitcher Haley Beno’s performance Wednesday – two runs, only one earned, on five hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts – Horan didn’t want to jinx anything.

“Beno’s been doing good,” she said, smiling.

If Beno keeps throwing this well, there might be no jinx or violation of softball superstition that can stop her.

The 8-2 win for St. Charles Haley Beno East over South Elgin went as Beno’s fourth victory of the year.

And though the pitcher was critical of herself, teammates were thrilled with another strong outing from the senior.

“Haley’s great,” senior left fielder Sarah Collalti said. “She always does us a solid out there on the mound.

You always can expect a low number from the other team offensively. We just try our best to back her up and get her enough runs to get the ‘W.’ ” It’s a formula that worked well for the Saints (6-2, 4-0 Upstate Eight Conference River) on Wednesday. In addition to Beno being her dominant self – at one point she struck out five straight batters, and South Elgin scored its only earned run with two outs in the seventh – the East offense chipped in plenty.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE PLANO – Some dugout whispers late in Wednesday’s game left Kaneland senior right-hander Nathan Hopkins armed with some potentially dangerous information.

He was three outs away from a six-inning no-hitter.

Not until Kaneland took the field leading Plano by the final, 11-0, margin in the bottom of the sixth did Hopkins realize what was at stake. He retired the first two Reapers, walked the next two, then settled down to prepare for true bedlam.

“I was really ecstatic, and it was just really awesome,” Hopkins said.

The Knights’ right fielder when he’s not on the mound, Hopkins helped Kaneland improve to 1-3 in his first start of the season. He struck out six and walked five, but also acknowledged plenty of help from his teammates.

With a runner on first and two outs early in the game, Knights shortstop Joey Panico ranged to stop a hot shot up the middle and flipped to second base for the force-out.

“I think we have some really skilled players but I think we also have players that don’t have the opportunity to play year-round,” Kane said. “Like a lot of players on the team this year, this is their only chance they get to play during the year, so of course their skill level is not the same at the beginning of the season as a kid who has played in summer league or club team in the fall and winter league.”

“It seems like every year, we graduate between eight and 16,” North coach Ruth Vostal said after Monday’s win over Batavia. “I mean, it’s a large number every year. Some people say, ‘Oh, we graduated all these players, we’re going to do …’ And I look at the history of St. Charles North and I feel like we do that year after year, and we just have quality players in the program that fill those gaps.

“I do think this is a talented team, and we just need to figure out how to play together, and I think that takes time and we’re doing lots of different things to help that happen a little bit more quickly. But a lot of that is just timing of the season and where we are.”

SOPHIE POHL St. Charles North, Sr., F What she did: Pohl had a goal and four assists in Tuesday’s win against Larkin in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division match, one day after the Toledo recruit notched a pair of goals in a win against Batavia in another conference match.

Until Tuesday’s 5-0 win against Elgin, Batavia had gone six straight matches in which it scored no more than one goal.

The Elgin win could be a springboard to rejuvenate the Bulldogs’ attack, and coach Mark Gianfrancesco also is glad to have until April 17 before the team plays another match, allowing time to emphasize concepts in practice that could make Batavia more dangerous.

“I think the biggest thing is just finding space off the ball and then being willing to interchange, whether it’s defenders, midfielders, forwards, to create space for each other as they continue moving, which then creates opportunities for everybody,” Gianfrancesco said. “That’s really the biggest thing rather than being very stagnant or [limited] to the structure of the formation you’re playing.”

Gianfrancesco said he wants the Bulldogs to be more “free-flowing,” but players can be reluctant to take risks for fear of being caught out of position. Gianfrancesco wants to see the Bulldogs (3-4-1) make themselves trickier to mark by more often darting into open space.

“It depends on the level of players you might have,” Gianfrancesco said.

“I think we’ve got the players that can do that but it depends on who trained them in the offseason and stuff. … If they’re playing at a high level, they do that automatically without thinking.”

Bears’ preseason schedule released

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com The NFL released the 2014 preseason schedule on Wednesday, and we’ll get our first look at the Bears when they host the Eagles, between Aug. 7 and Aug. 10.

The Bears suffered their worst loss of 2013 against the Eagles, a 54-11 drubbing.

In Week 2 of the preseason, the Bears will host the Jaguars on Aug. 14. That game will be televised on ESPN with a 7 p.m. kickoff. The contest should feature one of the top rookies in the league, considering the Jaguars have the No. 3 overall pick.

The all-important third preseason game will send the Bears to Seattle to play the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks. That contest will take place between Aug. 21-24.

This should give the Bears’ offense a great test before the regular season, as starters generally play the entire half, which means Jay Cutler and company will face arguably

The exact preseason dates and kickoff times should be available when the regular season schedule is announced later this month.

‘Joe’: Deeply moving and different

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post In a career that has lurched from the heights of “Leaving Las Vegas” and “Adaptation” to the depths of “Ghost Rider” and “The Wicker Man,” Nicolas Cage delivers what may be his best, most nuanced performance yet in the gritty, hypnotic and deeply moving “Joe.” Playing the title character, a kind-hearted yet no-nonsense supervisor of a blue-collar work crew in rural Mississippi – and a man struggling to control sporadic, alcohol-induced outbursts – the actor tempers his propensity for histrionics, underplaying Joe’s demons in such a way that they become even more tragic.

Joe’s anger, when it flashes, tends to be righteous, though he has served time, we’re told, for assaulting a police officer. One major narrative thread is the bad blood that has arisen, apparently sometime in the recent past, between Joe and Willie (Ronnie Gene Blevins), a cowardly local greaseball whose first appearance is to shoot Joe in the shoulder from a safe distance and then flee. Although the nature of their vendetta is never fully explained, we’re led to side with Joe. That’s partly because Cage’s character is shown to be such a decent man. He has a girlfriend (Adriene Mishler), loyal pals – including the town sheriff (Aj Wilson McPhaul) – and a dog (named Dog). But an even larger chunk of our sympathy comes from the actor’s charisma. Cage imbues Joe with the soulful, brooding intensity of a poet or artist, even when he’s doing something as simple as showing a friend how to butcher a deer carcass.

Working from Gary Hawkins’ adaptation of Larry Brown’s 1991 novel, director David Gordon Green (“Prince Avalanche”) evokes a powerful sense of hopelessness in both the people who populate the film and the place in which the action is set.

“Joe” is filled with prostitutes, day laborers, cops and drunks and is decorated with ramshackle houses.

It’s both ugly and beautiful, but Joe stands out for his seeming ability to

That ability enables him to notice – and care – when a 15-year-old drifter named Gary (Tye Sheridan) shows up one day, looking for work on Joe’s crew. Their assignment is a strange one – hacking at live trees with axes, the business ends of which have been modified to squirt poison, so that the forest can be replanted with healthier trees.

It’s a fairly surreal activity, as well as a nice metaphor for the film’s central theme, which has to do with sacrifice.

Joe soon takes Gary under his wing after noticing injuries delivered by the boy’s father, Wade (Gary Poulter), an alcoholic batterer so nasty that he makes Joe look like an angel. One particularly shocking scene features Wade murdering a man for a bottle of cheap wine, and then kissing his victim on the forehead. That bizarre contrast is a powerful encapsulation of the film’s paradoxical aesthetic of great squalor and great – if sometimes misplaced – compassion.

While Cage’s acting is terrific, so is that of Sheridan, whose turn in “Mud” was one of last year’s most outstanding juvenile performances. He brings

true heroism to his part. But the real acting tour de force in “Joe” comes courtesy of Poulter, a homeless alcoholic originally considered by the director for a small cameo, but who was elevated to one of the film’s central roles after an impressive audition.

Sadly, the grizzled novice, who looks much older than his 53 years, died last year shortly after filming was completed. In “Joe,” which is dedicated to him, Poulter’s intensity matches that of Cage, note for note.

The frightening verisimilitude of his portrayal lends the film a cinematic realism that nicely mutes some of Cage’s star power.

There are a number of trains heading for a collision here: Joe and Wade; Joe and Willie; Joe and the sense of justice that both ennobles and bedevils him. Green sets all of them on their tracks and then masterfully orchestrates the inevitable crash. In the end, it feels like less of a crescendo than the slow unclenching of a balled up fist.

• “Joe” received four out of four stars. The film is rated R and contains violence, obscenity and sex. It runs 117 minutes.

Independent woman struggles with intimacy Birthrate among unwed Dear Abby: I’m a 27-year-old woman who has never had a boyfriend or been kissed. I was never interested in romance or having a significant other. I felt strong being independent and taking care of myself. Now that I have a degree, a career and a house, I feel ready to try to let a man into my life.

I met a really nice guy a month ago. “Brian” and I have gone out several times and have a lot in common. He’s a gentleman, and he says he’s willing to wait for me.

Limit the time your kids spend playing video games Dear Doctor K: My son plays a lot of video games. What do I need to know about them? And how can I make sure they don’t become a problem?

Dear Reader: I’ve yet to meet a child who doesn’t like video games. But as you imply, this kind of entertainment has its downsides. I’ve talked with several colleagues who are pediatricians here at Harvard Medical School, and they’ve helped me answer your question.

Video gaming is a sedentary activity. This isn’t a big deal if your son spends less than a total of two hours a day watching TV or playing video games. But you don’t want media time to crowd out time spent being physically active.

Too much fast-paced video gaming can cause behavioral problems. Children who spend a lot of time playing fast-paced video games can have trouble with executive functioning. Such games throw a new stimulus at a kid every few seconds, and the child has a limited number of potential responses. Granted, most children are not executives – but many are future executives, and the skill-set required begins to be developed in childhood.

“Executive functions” are

An executive needs to be deliberative. He or she needs to consider an issue from all sides.

This requires calling on past business experiences to help predict the best decision. And it involves identifying the people in the organization who need to be involved in considering the best course.

Many video games contain a lot of violence. Exposure to media violence has been linked to behavioral problems and aggression in children. Experts also worry about the effects on children of being the one carrying out the violence, as opposed to just watching it.

Friends and patients who work with children often tell me that some kids seem to think that the consequences of violence are not “real.” Or that, because “winning” in a video games involves successful acts of video game violence, being violent in real life will make them “winners.”

Some children may get addicted to them. It’s easy to get caught up in making it to the next level and lose all track of time.

This doesn’t mean that children should never play video games. But as with everything in life, common sense and moderation are key. Here are some ways you can help ensure that video games don’t cause problems for your son: • Limit the time spent playing them. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children limit screen time to no more than two hours a day. Have rules – and enforce them.

• Choose games wisely. Pay attention to the age ratings. Encourage games that are educational, or that require activity, such as dance competition games or games that involve playing a sport virtually.

• Supervise – and join in. Watch your son while he plays to see what the games are really like.

Even better, play with him. You’ll get a real sense of the game and how your child reacts to it.

teen girls has dropped Dear Teens: When the phrase “unwed mothers” is discussed, many automatically think of out-of-wedlock births by teens. However, the birthrate among unwed girls under the age of 18 has dropped to the lowest level on record.

The rise in birthrate to unmarried women has risen most dramatically among women age 20 to 29.

The number of births to unmarried women has been on the rise for the past 20 years, and last year more than a million and a half babies were born in the United States to unmarried women.

Government health officials announced that the number of babies born to unwed mothers has risen to an all-time high. Nearly 40 percent of all the babies born in the United States are out-of-wedlock babies.

Analysts feel that the overall climb is due to three major factors.

First, having a baby without the benefit of marriage is more accepted today than it was 50 years ago.

Next, many women are putting off getting married, but still want children, and finally, living together without a marriage certificate is an easy way to become an unwed mom.

Dr. Wallace: Our senior class had a university counselor talk to us about attending a college or university after we graduate. One of his statements sent a shiver down my spine. He said that there are now more female students in colleges and universities in the United States than male students. I find this hard to believe.

I will be attending a college or university in September for two reasons. First, I want to become an elemen-

Please tell me the speaker made a mistake about there being more females than males in schools of higher learning. – Nameless, Orlando, Fla. Dear Nameless: There was a time when males outnumbered females on college and university campuses. Thirty years ago, 55 percent of all students were male.

Now, only 46 percent of U.S. college students are males.

Females have passed males in college attendance because more of them understand that they need a degree in order to compete for good jobs. Some guys are under the impression that this is unnecessary.

They think they can get the job they want just because they’re male.

They’re in for a rude awakening.

Thirty years ago, college-educated women most often became nurses, teachers or secretaries. Career options for women have expanded tremendously since then. Now a young woman can be anything she wants – and because of this, according to sociologist John Reynolds, who teaches at Florida State University, they’re attending college in record numbers.

But, don’t worry – college is still a likely place to meet your future husband. It’s just gotten a little more competitive.

One of the weak points of most bridge players is the inability to track the high-card points – and that is arguably the most important thing to count during a deal.

How would that help East to find the right defense here?

South is in four spades. West leads the heart ace. What should happen?

The auction follows Standard American. If you have taken up two-over-one game-force, North might rebid three spades (forcing). Then South would probably settle into four spades, since he has a minimum opening bid.

However, his secondary club fit might make him wonder about a slam. Note that if, for example, North’s diamond king were the heart king, six clubs would be an excellent contract.

Since East does not want his partner to shift suits, he should encourage enthusiastically with his heart eight. Then West should cash his heart king and lead his third heart. After winning this trick, East should track the highcard points. The dummy has 13, West has produced seven, and East has seven. That leaves only 13 missing. South must have the spade ace-king and diamond ace.

This means that the defenders cannot win a minor-suit trick.

They must get a trump trick to defeat the contract. So East should lead his last heart. When West ruffs with the spade eight, it effects an uppercut and gives East that crucial trump winner.
