Heroes needed at Elburn library’s Dewey Dash ELBURN – The Town and Country Public Library is in need of some heroes.

All are welcome to dress in superhero gear and be ready and willing to run in the library’s annual fundraising 5K event.

The 11th annual Dewey Dash is set for April 12, and the theme is superheroes.

The library’s event has become known for its efforts to have participants show up in costume. Previous themes included “From Pooh to Who” and fairy tales.

Registration for the race is underway, and there is a discount for those who register early. The cost is $24 in advance and $27 on race day.

There also will be a 1-mile event at a cost of $12 for those ages 12 and younger ($15 on race day) and $22 for adults ($25 on race day). The

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla mile event starts at 8:30 a.m., and the 5K begins at 9 a.m. at the library, 320 E. North St., Elburn.

Mary Lynn Alms, the library’s director, said the theme is one of several features that make the event notable. The race features a large spread of food from local vendors, which is free to participants. Also, the race features quotes posted along the route, and the quotes each year are relevant to the theme.

The Dewey Dash also annually serves as a fundraiser for a specific area of the library. This year, the money raised will go toward the annual summer reading program. Alms said funds will go toward buying new books, as well as some prizes.

“This is the biggest fundraiser we have,” she said.

This year’s food items will include pizza, hot dogs, pasta, salads, Chinese food “and some healthy stuff, too, but mostly not,” Alms said, adding the vendors donate the food for the event.

Alms said organizers have heard praise from runners about the race itself, saying “people who are seasoned runners tell me it’s a difficult course. It’s challenging.”

Maple Park Public Library getting a fresh look

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The Maple Park Public Library is getting a makeover.

Renovations to the library’s main entrance, storage and media area and children’s section are being completed at the library, located in the lower level of the Maple Park Community Center at 302 Willow St. “We’re almost there,” Maple Park Library board Trustee Laura McPhee said. She said she hopes the project will be completed within the next two weeks.

McPhee said officials had hoped the project would have been completed by the library’s recent Easter egg hunt. Now, they hope the project will be done by midApril.

A $15,000 grant Kane County riverboat grant the library received in 2013 is funding the project.

Most of the work has been done by volunteers, including McPhee and her

family.

“In about four weekends, we all got it done,” she said.

“Now the floor has to be put down, and everything that was removed has to be put back in.”

The library serves about 700 patrons in both Kane and DeKalb counties, McPhee said.

Renovations to the library began in 2010, after the library received a grant of $1,500 from the DeKalb County Community Foundation, McPhee said.

The grant allowed library officials to buy supplies to update a library room.

Two years later, the library received a $2,500 grant from the DeKalb County Community Foundation to do more renovation work, McPhee said.

She said use of the library has been growing because of the renovations.

“I feel like we’re getting a lot more business, so that’s kind of cool,” McPhee said.

4 Benefit concert to honor

Geneva girl’s love of music

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Alyssa Alvin of Geneva was 18 when she lost her battle with leukemia in 2014, but her family is honoring her life and love of music by establishing the Alyssa Alvin Foundation for Hope.

During her long stays at the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, Alyssa Alvin always looked forward to playing the single electronic keyboard available to young cancer patients, her parents, George and Yoli Alvin, said.

Once they realized there was a need for older children and teens undergoing cancer treatment to have access to musical instruments and art supplies, the parents decided the foundation would be dedicated to meet that need, Yoli Alvin said.

Aylssa Alvin was a 14-yearold freshman at Geneva High School when she was diagnosed, her mother said.

“She was always very happy when we put the radio or keyboard in her room, even though she was very ill,” Yoli Alvin said.

The foundation’s first fundraiser, a Benefit Concert for Hope, will be from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. April 18 at Village Bible Church, 847 N. Route 47, Sugar Grove. The performances will be followed by a reception.

Tickets are $10 and available online at www.alyssaalvinfoundationforhope. org.

Yoli Alvin said they have sold at least 50 tickets so far, and she hopes they sell at least 50 to 100 more for the event.

Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. for a silent auction featuring gift baskets from local businesses, including The Little Traveler and Graham’s Chocolate.

Musical performances will begin at 1:30 p.m., provided by the students of Alyssa Alvin’s piano teacher, Ashlee Schneider; students from Judith Schneider’s oboe studio; Kim Richter’s bassoon studio; and string students from Metea Valley High School.

“I taught her for more than 10 years,” Ashlee Schneider said of Alyssa Alvin, who started lessons at age 4. “What better way to kick off the foundation’s first event than to watch other students make music?”

Ashlee Schneider said Alyssa Alvin was her first student who expressed an interest in composing.

“She was not just interested in reading notes on the page. She was expressive and musical, and it was always really fun working with her,” Ashlee Schneider said.

Yoli Alvin said the response to the foundation’s first outreach efforts to raise money for instruments and art supplies “has been phenomenal.”

“Our mission is very simple,” Yoli Alvin said. “It is to bring the joyful gift of music and visual art into the lives of children – these young people – who are battling cancer.

We will be able to provide these young adults with instruments they can take with them at Ronald McDonald House.”

‘THEY ARE HERE TO HELP’ Kaneville Volunteer Fire Department gets help from those in all walks of life

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – Dressed in firefighter gear on a chilly winter evening, surrounded by overturned school buses for a training exercise, Kaneville resident Jesse Sanchez revealed that, in a way, he was in a dream-come-true situation.

“People don’t believe me,” Sanchez said. “In third grade, I said I wanted to be a firefighter.”

He said it wasn’t necessarily something he thought ever would happen, but the former Chicago resident ended up moving to Kaneville, and the opportunity surfaced.

Like many who stood dressed in firefighter garb during the training exercise, Sanchez said he was asked a question he didn’t think he ever would hear: Would you like to join a fire department?

Sanchez wasn’t going to say no.

“I’m like a little kid,” he said. “I still love the red lights.”

Those involved in the Kaneville Volunteer Fire Department described a welcoming atmosphere, in which those who live or spend significant time in the village might be asked to join. That doesn’t mean an inexperienced resident gets to fight fires right away. Instead, newcomers spend months going through “the yellow folder.” Brett Gobeli, a member of the department and the next-door neighbor of the fire department’s station on Lovell Street in Kaneville, calls the folder “a checklist of everything they need to learn.”

There is no pay.

Living so close to the station, Gobeli, an administrator at Community Unit School District 300, now realizes it was inevitable he would be approached about joining the department. At the time, he said it wasn’t something he ever had considered.

“I just pulled over when I saw the sirens on. That’s as

Tuesdays are training days, and a recent one was especially intense. In Gobeli’s role in District 300, he said the district’s transportation director mentioned some buses that were going to be sent to scrap. Gobeli said he would be happy to take them off his hands, as they could be useful in training.

Those at the training session were divided into two groups – one included more experienced department members and one included those who were relatively new. Participants worked on getting into the buses using various tools, training for a scenario they said they hoped to never encounter.

At the scene was Chief David Sigmund, a 30-year member of the department. He said he lives on the edge of Kaneville.

He got his start when “somebody just asked me to come out and volunteer.”

“I came, and I never left,” Sigmund said.

He saluted the volunteers as people willing to put themselves into potentially difficult situations for no financial reward.

“They are here to help,” he said. “They are not here for the money.”

Elburn resident Harry Meyer was also at the training session, which, he mentioned, was at an open space provided by Meyer in the Sycamore area.

Meyer, who said he often drives a fire truck, said there are many medical calls, but, at times, there are accident scenes. Also, when road conditions become bad, there can be crashes, and some traffic inci-

Meyer said he joined because he was a close friend of the chief, “and he kept bothering me,” he said with a laugh.

He called Sigmund “an inspiration.”

“The chief has been volunteering since 1985,” Meyer said. “He doesn’t get one penny for his time.”

Another member, Chris Ball, said he used to live in Kaneville, but he now lives in Hinckley. He still participates in the department. He said he worked at an auto shop, and a lot of volunteer firefighters took their cars there.

“When they found out I lived in town, they kept nagging me to join,” he said, adding, “I knew the guys who did it, and I was like, well, just see what it’s all about. … I ended up really liking it.”

He said the training is valuable. He said while firefighters can play a role after their initial training, it still can take years to be able to do some

parts of the job. He said the least experienced guy will handle the nozzle, but he also said he hasn’t been in a live fire that was not a training session.

Another member, Nate Bonifas, is a 24-year-old Sugar Grove resident who said he has studied to become a firefighter in a program at Waubonsee Community College. Even so, he had to work his way through the checklist. He said he goes in for training every

week, and – to him – it is a serious endeavor. He would like to make a career out of firefighting. But, he said, that ambition isn’t required to help out in Kaneville.

“You can come in with no background,” he said.

The way Meyer sees it, it’s a good use of participants’ time.

“It’s like anything else,” he said. “Some, they might bowl or go to the movies. We come here.”

But he said the project continues to move forward. “[The extension] is an opportunity for us to get all the i’s dotted and t’s crossed,” Dempsey said. “I’m excited to move forward.”

Dempsey said demolition of the building should be underway in the next 90 days.

Batavia Enterprises owns Batavia Plaza. Batavia aldermen previously approved a redevelopment agreement for the project. The project is in a tax increment financing district.

Under the proposal, Batavia Enterprises would receive $450,000 from the city as the project moves forward, and another $693,000 that would be paid out over 12 years if the project generates enough TIF money to cover it.

asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A 69-year-old Sugar Grove woman lost $1,500 in a Nigerian romance scam, according to a Sugar Grove police report.

The woman reported the scam Feb. 28, explaining she used an online dating service and became involved with a man through phone calls and texting, according to the report.

The report indicated the man initially claimed he lived in Fort Wayne, Indiana, but later said he was stuck in Nigeria, trying to get back. He reportedly asked the woman to send him $1,500 for his return.

According to the report, she bought a money gram at Jewel-Osco in Sugar Grove and sent it to Lagos, Nigeria.

She reportedly became suspicious after learning

the man’s Fort Wayne address was for a vacant lot or ice rink. She also found information online indicating he had scammed many women, police reported.

The officer noted in the report that the man contacted her about sending $6,000 while police took her information.

The woman reportedly told police she now was stringing him along to get as much information to assist with the investigation.

She hadn’t given him any personal information other than her birth date and address, police reported.

She would like the man arrested if he is in the United States, but police reportedly told her that’s unlikely because the money gram was sent to Nigeria.

The man’s cellphone number, however, was registered to an account out of Indiana, police reported.

Police: Man, 20, sold drugs to friends

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A traffic stop in Sugar Grove led to a felony charge against a 20-year-old Montgomery man who told police he was making up to $250 a week selling a form of marijuana to friends, according to a Sugar Grove police report.

According to the report, on Feb. 10 an officer on patrol stopped John D. Hopkins after a traffic viola- John D. tion.

Hopkins In addition to noticing an odor of burnt marijuana in the car, the officer saw three opened air fresheners; several packs of cigars that are commonly used to make marijuana blunts; and small particles of a green, leafy substance consistent with marijuana particles commonly referred to as “shake,” police reported.

A search of the vehicle turned up marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to the report.

The report indicated Hopkins worked as a restaurant delivery driver in Elburn and has sold “shatter” – a concentrated form of marijuana extract – to friends for $50 a gram, $5 more than what he paid. Selling the substance gave him an extra $200 to $250 a week, police reported.

Hopkins made the substance in a sink in his parents’ basement, according to the report.

The marijuana and individual folds of shatter found in the vehicle weighed about 34 grams in packaging, police reported.

Hopkins, of the 1800 block of Stirling Lane, Montgomery, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor, and manufacturing/delivering marijuana, a Class 4 felony.

Police reportedly confiscated the $387 in Hopkins’ wallet.

It and the vehicle would be submitted for drug asset forfeiture, police reported.

Kane County court records show Hopkins’ bond was set at $10,000, and his father posted the required $1,000 bail.

He is expected in court at 9 a.m. April 22.

BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting recommended approval of a third extension of the redevelopment agreement for the proposed new Walgreens store in downtown Batavia as Batavia Enterprises works out more details on the project.

Foxfield Theater building undergoes razing

Only the southern half of the Foxfield Theater building at 151 Fieldgate Drive, St. Charles, remained standing Monday afternoon.

“It was kind of a nuisance and an eyesore,” Gary McGrath, president of McGrath Automotive Group and owner of the property, said in a voice mail message left Friday.

McGrath bought the building, which is more than 30 years old, in August for $610,000 from Illinois State Bank, according to property records. The plan for the fenced-off property is to store vehicles there from the McGrath Honda of St. Charles dealership, 1411 E. Main St., St. Charles, McGrath said in the voice mail.

McGrath said people were breaking into and squatting in the theater. There were two reports of an open door and one report of property damage at the theater in 2014, said Lisa Blackwell, St. Charles po-

Forever Yogurt to open in Geneva

Forever Yogurt will occupy the space formerly used by Caribou Coffee, at 507 S. Third St., Geneva, manager Darcy Brown said. The space now is undergoing remodeling, she

said.

“It was a coffee shop, and we need to make it a yogurt shop,” Brown said. “It’s a good location for a store.

We’re hoping to move in, in a couple weeks.”

She said the Geneva store will offer 16 flavors and more than 50 toppings, fewer than what is available at the St. Charles store.

“The new store will not have as many, but we’ll be doing more smoothies,” Brown said.

ELBURN – A man who missed his train in Elburn faces a felony charge because of the way he decided to get a cab, according to an Elburn police report.

P o l i c e were called Edward L. to the Elburn Carpenter Metra train depot shortly before 11:30 p.m.

Feb. 18 to assist the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District with an alarm, according to the report.

Instead of finding smoke or fire, police reportedly found a man – later identified as Edward L. Carpenter – sitting in the warming house.

Carpenter, 40, of the 300 block of Shady Lane, Elmhurst, told police he missed his train, and he wanted a cab so he pulled the fire alarm, according to the report. He was charged with disorderly conduct for making a false 911 call, a Class 4 felony.

Kane County court records show his bond was set at $25,000, and a family friend posted the necessary $2,500 bail.

He is expected in court at 9 a.m. April 10.

Elburn woman shares cancer survival story

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ELBURN – An Elburn grandmother said she is celebrating her sixth year living cancer-free.

“It was actually pretty much a miracle – I wasn’t expected to survive,” Geri Caron, 65, said.

Caron in 2008 ended up in an emergency room with what she thought was a gallbladder attack. Instead she was diagnosed with primary peritoneal carcinoma, which acts like ovarian cancer and affects tissue that covers the abdomen, uterus, bladder and rectum.

The diagnosis was a complete shock to Caron, who already had a hysterectomy in 1990. She said she didn’t think she could get cancer in that area of her body with her ovaries already removed.

Her initial treatment plan included several rounds of chemotherapy and debulking surgery, or removing part of a malignant tumor that cannot be completed excised.

When the tumors weren’t shrinking, the doctors were reluctant to move on to the debulking surgery, Caron said.

The centers offered a treatment called hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Caron said it involved a debulking surgery and a chemotherapy treatment heated to 106 degrees and delivery directly to the abdomen during surgery twice for 45 minutes.

Caron said her Feb. 16, 2009, operation, in all, took a total of 15 hours – including the chemotherapy application – and her personal recovery took eight months. In the end, the treatment she received in Zion ended up being the key to beating her cancer, she said, Caron currently spends her days as the full-time caretaker for her two young granddaugh-

Jocarol loved to spend time outdoors, especially hiking and exploring in the desert. She had a passion for interior design and was a great cook. Her greatest enjoyment, however, was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by everyone who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her sons, John (Tara) of Geneva and Frank (Betsy) of California; her grandchildren, Frank, John, Nicolas, and Casey; and her brother, Paul Incapreo of Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Mary Lou Agrella.

Prepartion work for Route 38 construction project to begin KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Motorists traveling through downtown Geneva soon should expect daily lane closures as crews start preliminary work on the Route 38 construction project, the city announced Monday in a news release.

The Illinois Department of Transportation’s contractor is expected Wednesday to begin the preparation work for the project, which will begin in earnest by mid-May. Preparations include ad-

justing manhole cover frames, street patching and curb improvements. The work, which should be done in four to six weeks, will occur during daytime hours on both directions of Route 38 from Route 31 in downtown Geneva to western Kane County.

One lane in each direction will remain open on State Street/Route 38, but those wanting to avoid the construction may take Fabyan Parkway as an alternate route.

The preparation work will be followed by the resurfacing of Route 38. The paving

work will be done in two sections: from Route 47 in Elburn to Peck Road in St. Charles Township and from Peck Road to First Street/Route 31 in Geneva.

In Geneva, resurfacing is not expected to start until midMay at the earliest, but construction schedules still are being finalized.

Third St., Geneva, Among the promotions will be raffles to win an amethyst cathedral – a large geode – and a sacred geometry pendant featuring a double flower of life, said Tracy Paddy, the social media director for the shop.

For a chance to win the amethyst cathedral, a purchase must be made at the store. For a chance to win the flower of life pendant, purchases must be made online, store manager Tammy van Slee said.

The cathedral is worth $145, and the flower of life is valued at $111, van Slee said.

KANEVILLE – Candidates vying for three available seats on the Kaneville Village Board in the consolidated election Tuesday agreed the village’s streets and sidewalks would benefit from some improvements.

Some also said they recognize the importance of keeping the post office open in the village, although they were not certain how much control Kaneville can have over that issue.

Five candidates are running for the three four-year positions – they are incumbents Howard “Tim” Christopher, Myra Ottoson and Paul Ross and challengers Delbert Ward and David Kovach. Christopher and Ottoson could not be reached for comment.

Ross said he has enjoyed serving on the board since the village’s incorporation in 2006.

He said the most significant issue is long-term planning.

He said successful planning would be key to street repairs, and the village would need to dip into its general fund to offset the full cost. He called sidewalks “a second priority.”

“My concern is that we, as a board, are not generating long-term planning,” Ross said, adding that as a business owner, “one of my jobs is to forecast, not just what the business is doing today, tomorrow or next week, but, as I make large purchases …

I am forecasting what is going to happen in the next five or 10 years. … We, as a village, have not done that.”

Kovach said he moved to the village 15 years ago, and he said his aim is to “keep it

Commission needs to achieve its goals We hope some real work that creates actual solutions is the end result of a new Commission on Criminal Justice and Sentencing Reform, which is tasked with reducing the Illinois prison population by 25 percent over the next 10 years.

Illinois is constantly creating task forces and commissions to probe important issues, such as education funding and pension reform, with few results.

Hopefully, this commission will face less political influence and achieve its goals.

There also should be agreement from both ends of the political spectrum that incarceration rates in Illinois and the U.S. are out of control.

The state’s prison population jumped 700 percent over the past 40 years while crime has fallen by 20 percent over that same period of time.

The U.S. is so far out of line with the rest of the civilized world when it comes to incarceration rates, one can’t really fit the gap onto a reasonable bar graph.

The U.S. incarceration rate of 716 per 100,000 residents is grossly lopsided compared with 147 per 100,000 in the United Kingdom, 118 per 100,000 residents in Canada or 82 per 100,000 in the Netherlands.

If those numbers don’t bother anyone, the other problem is that prisons aren’t doing much to reduce recidivism. About 50 percent of adult and juvenile inmates are sent back to prison within three years of their release.

Still not moved?

Then how about the $1.4 billion Illinois taxpayers spend on the Illinois Department of Corrections and detaining juveniles each year for a system that doesn’t work? That should get everyone’s attention.

The 28-member commission, formed

by Gov. Bruce Rauner and joined by state Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, is tasked with examining the entire criminal justice system from start to finish, including mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent offenders and recidivism problems.

We look forward to hearing the commission’s recommendations.

I say this as a former student. When I was in school, I didn’t care about obtaining knowledge. My only goal was to get an A in my class and then quickly move on to the next assignment. My peers were the same way or were just there to survive the class and collect whatever grade they could muster.

It has become easier for students to develop this mind frame with so many standardized tests, and

papers they can basically copy off of Wikipedia. But Mr. Dryden never let his students get away with that.

He taught the importance of verifying our information and to think critically. Mr. Dryden taught me to crave knowledge and to look deeper into the issues at hand. He taught us the importance of compassion and why we need to be involved in our communities.

Before I took Mr. Dryden’s classes, I had no interest in government. But because

of him, I’m active in my community, and I have volunteered in more campaigns than I can count, because I know how important it is to have my voice heard.

I cannot stress enough the importance Mr. Dryden has had in my life, and I’m sure that countless other students can say the same.

So we need his voice on the school board. His years of experience have given him great insights on how to improve our schools and empower our teachers and students to reach their full potential.

Please vote Mr. Dryden onto the Batavia School Board. He is the best choice for our students, parents, taxpayers and teachers.

Vikings ‘just push through’

Even had he risked playing under the same conditions, Wulfkuhle couldn’t have debated the magnitude – or lack thereof – of his kill that closed the Vikings’ 25-21, 25-22 Upstate Eight Conference River Division win.

“No, I did not get a lot of that one,” Wulfkuhle said, “but I guess I just found the spot that was open. Good way to end it.”

Hey, whatever works.

Geneva (4-2, 1-0 UEC River) capitalized on 11 Saints service errors while navigating through stretches of its own mistakes and shaky play.

East (2-4, 0-1) slashed into

a sizable Vikings lead down the stretch and came within two points before Wulfkuhle clinched the victory. In need of one last solid sequence, Geneva seized it.

“All day today, we were just really focused and in the game,” Vikings senior outside hitter Nick Buseski said. “We were just calm and steady. We let a couple points up, but we were able to just push through like it was no big deal.”

Buseski, 6-foot-8 and committed to NCAA Division III Kean University in New Jersey, meant the duration of the match when he said “all day.”

Before smacking a teamhigh seven kills, however, Buseski hung out with his friend, Wulfkuhle (four kills) for the balance of the afternoon.

Although both schools are on spring break this week, the match still began in the early

evening. In boys volleyball, matinees can wait for weekend tournaments.

“It’s not like you go to school and you’re just all-day ready,” Wulfkuhle said. “We just had to keep ourselves into it. We were excited, though.”

East showed flashes of sustaining good runs, and was at its best when junior setter Jake Lauger (23 assists) spread the ball to Jimmy Farace (seven kills) and Jack McCann (six).

The Saints controlled the early points of the second set and led as late as 7-6 before errors and Geneva’s balanced attack – Luke Will (six kills) and Jonathan Bishop (four) complemented Buseski and Wulfkuhle – began adding up.

“A lot of kids are at different stages,” Saints coach Kate McCullagh said. “Some have played club. Then I have a kid who has never played before.

So just trying to get every-

body feeling comfortable, figuring out what our strengths and weaknesses are, because that changes seemingly dayto-day.”

One of the Saints’ steadiest pieces remains their enthusiasm.

“They want to learn; they want to get better,” McCullagh said. “But now it’s just a matter of putting the work in to actually do so, you know.”

David Franz had 22 assists for the Vikings, while Josh Haston contributed four digs.

With plenty of experience back from a 25-win team in 2014, first-year Geneva coach Annie Seitelman, also the school’s girls coach, has a group brimming with confidence.

“We’re feeling good about this team,” Wulfkuhle said.

“We think if we can just stick to the fundamentals, pass well, hit well, we can go pretty far with this team.”

’Dogs vow to ‘cut the mistakes’ after game turns

Batavia found that out the hard way Tuesday morning, committing three errors – including a costly one in the top of the seventh inning – in a 4-3 nonconference loss against Willowbrook at Wheaton College’s Pfund Stadium.

“The errors are something we have to take care of with the younger guys,” Batavia coach Matt Holm said. “Cut the mistakes.”

Batavia shortstop Kyle Niemiec overthrew his first baseman to start the seventh, with the runner advancing to second base on the play.

After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to third, Willowbrook (4-1) capitalized on the mistake in the next atbat.

Michael Petruzzi laced a shot toward the left center

field gap, with Bulldogs center fielder Steven Busby tracking it down.

But Busby crashed into his left fielder after making the catch, dropping the ball and altering the game moments later.

The umpires – who originally had ruled the catch an out – ruled the ball was dropped on the transfer, overturning the call.

The play gave Willowbrook a 4-3 lead while Petruzzi advanced to third as the Warriors threatened to score again.

Bulldogs reliever Ben Lynam earned two of his seven strikeouts after to get Batavia (1-1) out of the jam, but took the loss for his efforts after relieving starter Eric Huizinga after four innings.

The Bulldogs had a chance to tie in the bottom of the inning after senior Pat Greco laced a two-out double to the left center gap.

A moment later, Luke Beckmann grounded out on a firstpitch slurve to end the game.

Greco said the breakdown in fundamentals defensively was key to the loss.

“We just have to make the plays,” Greco said. “We have to make the easy plays to get guys out. We can’t give them extra outs. Our pitchers are going to make pitches and our offense is good enough to win games, but when we’re not making easy plays we’re not giving ourselves a chance.”

Greco stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Niemiec, who skied an 0-2 fastball toward right center field.

Greco finished 2 for 3 on and said he made the needed adjustments at the plate after his first at-bat.

“My first at-bat, I wasn’t seeing the ball early,” Greco said. “I was starting a little bit late. So I adjusted and wanted to see the ball out of his hand right away and try to turn on something. He left a fastball up and I threw my hands at it.”

Willowbrook has opened up its fast start as a result of winning close games.

“That’s what we’re going to be,” Warriors coach Vic Wis-

ner said. “We’re good pitching, we’re good defense and we hit the ball just enough to get it done. We’re 4-1 and every single game has been a one-run game. This is the first non extra inning game, so that’s kind of our makeup, so our kids have been in that position. Just like (the Bulldogs) do, we’ve been focusing on making good contact, putting the ball in play and letting people make plays.”

Holm said the Bulldogs will take the loss in stride, learning from the early-season mistakes as they progress toward Upstate Eight River play beginning next week.

“I tell them right now, some guys are increasing time and increasing stock and other guys, you’ve got to perform,” Holm said. “That’s what these first days, this is like our spring trip, our preseason kind of before we get into next week with St. Charles East. It’ll be a tight conference race, so we’re just trying to see what the best options are all the way around.”

By RYAN WOODEN editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – For three innings Tuesday, the St. Charles North softball team had everything clicking offensively in its season opener against Plainfield Central.

The North Stars scored four runs and had seven hits, and with a 4-0 lead looked poised to potentially end it early when Plainfield Central pitcher Brooklyn Daly finally settled in. The North Stars managed only one more hit over the next six innings as the Wildcats came back to win the nonconference game, 5-4, in nine innings.

“Maybe you just have to ad-

mit that [Daly] did much better as the game went on,” North coach Tom Poulin said when asked what changed offensively. “You have to credit the pitcher. She’s good. I thought we had quality at-bats and I thought we were patient, but after we got ahead I thought we looked anxious.

“We were check-swinging, we weren’t being aggressive to the ball and we left way too many runners on base.”

In the first inning, North got off to a solid start when Northern Illinois-bound No. 3 hitter Abby Howlett ripped a double into the left-center field gap to plate a run. In total, the North Stars scored two runs each in the first and second innings.

However, as Daly settled in and the North Stars’ bats went silent, a powerful Plainfield Central lineup started to warm up.

“I thought [starter] Allison Hausl and [reliever] Jillian [Waslawski] threw well,” Poulin said. “But you can’t miss up and you can’t miss over the plate, and our misses were kinda dead center today, and they took advantage of it.”

found herself entering the game in the eighth and pitched out of a jam with help from Louisville commit Jordyn Wolfe, who cut down a runner at home to keep it at 4.

Waslawski allowed the eventual winning run when Plainfield Central cleanup hitter Sammy Sabor managed an RBI single in the ninth.

“She has a great presence in the circle and I think it was big for her to come in there in a big moment,” North senior third basemen Erin Nemetz said.

“Unfortunately, it didn’t go the way she wanted, but she’ll learn from it. Definitely.”

Nemetz had a solid 3 for 3 performance in the loss, reaching base in a fourth plate appearance with a hit-by-pitch.

Daly completed her impressive all-around performance with a perfect ninth inning to seal the win.

Team owner Dr. Bob Froehlich isn’t shy about the spike he’s hoping for in 2015, when the club celebrates its 25th anniversary in Geneva.

“We’re expecting to have 50,000 more fans this year,” Froehlich said, “and that’s an organization-wide goal.”

The Cougars begin the franchise’s Arizona Diamondbacks era against visiting Cedar Rapids at 6:30 p.m. April 9, marking the sixth player-development contract in place since the team relocated from Wausau, Wisconsin, before the 1991 season.

Although aligning with the nearby Cubs, as the franchise did from 2013 to 2014, is undoubtedly optimal, the Cougars in 2013 became the first Class-A operation to attract 10 million fans.

That was with a mere three months’ worth of openings as a Cubs farm team. Most of those spectators came when the Cougars fed into the systems of the Baltimore Orioles, Florida (now Miami) Marlins, Oakland A’s and Kansas City Royals – organizations not exactly a stone’s throw from Cherry Lane.

Couple that established drawing power with a silver anniversary, Midwest League title defense and several new capital improvements – including premium seating and a video board – and Cougars brass feels its hopeful leap might not be giant.

“Defending champs and all the different improvements that are going on here at the ballpark and the new affiliation, it’s just a real exciting year at the ballpark, no question,” general manager Curtis Haug said.

During January’s “Meet the Diamondbacks” hot stove event, Arizona farm director Mike Bell cited the Cougars’ attendance history as an important consideration. He knew the team averaged just

Pet ownership has positive effects on health Dear Doctor K: I’m on the fence about getting a dog. My wife claims that pets – particularly dogs – can improve our health. Is that true?

Dear Reader: When I was growing up, there was always a dog in the family. And I mean “in the family”: They were a part of the family, often coming with us when we went on errands. Some of my friends never had a pet, so I once asked my mother why we always had a dog. She replied: “Dogs are good for us.”

I remembered that answer when I got your question. But I wasn’t sure of the “scientific” answer to your question, so I did some homework. When I looked into the evidence, I found that there are many studies that indicate having a dog is linked to health in several ways. Here’s what I learned: • Physical activity. Regular exercise is the closest thing that exists to an all-purpose tonic for good health. Enter the dog. Dogs are perfect exercise buddies.

Whether we like it or not, they will encourage us to go for a walk, be it raining, snowing, sleeting or hailing outside.

• Reduced asthma and allergies in kids.

Most allergists now say children

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff who are exposed to a dog from infancy onward are less likely to develop problems. That appears to be true even in allergy-prone kids.

• Cardiovascular benefits. A growing body of evidence is showing multiple benefits for heart health.

In 2013, the American Heart Association (AHA) issued a statement concluding that pet ownership is probably associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. How could that be? Consider the next two benefits: • Blood pressure. In multiple studies, dog owners have been shown to have lower blood pressure than non-owners. That’s probably due to a combination of increased exercise and the calming effects that pets have on their owners.

• Psychological benefits. Dog ownership helps prevent loneliness, anxiety and depression. Each of these is, in turn, a risk factor for heart disease. Many people report feeling less fear and anxiety when they pet a dog. Dog ownership

leads to less release of the stress hormone cortisol, which in turn lowers stress-related increases in heart rate and blood pressure.

Why all these benefits? I think it’s because (most) dogs love us without reservation. There’s a prayer that makes this point: “Lord, help me to become the person my dog thinks I am.”

Dogs also seek our love, and that, too, has its benefits. Dogs add structure and routine to the day. And because animals require care, a sick person will often turn their focus away from his or her own symptoms and, instead, focus on the pet.

As you can see, dogs have much to offer us. But think carefully before you make the decision to adopt a dog. Pets have social, emotional and physical needs. Make sure you will have the time and energy to attend to them. • Never purchase products made from endangered animals, such as ivory jewelry or figurines.

• Volunteer to work at your local zoo, aquarium or animal shelter.

• Only buy canned tuna and salmon that have “dolphin friendly” stamps on them. Some fishing companies use nets that catch dolphin along with the fish.

When the dolphins become trapped in the nets, they drown.

• Persuade everyone you know not to buy real fur. Fake fur looks just as good and is also a lot cheaper.

• Reuse notebook paper and computer paper. Reusing paper reduces our need for forest products. According to The Institute of Scrap Recycling, paper recycling saves the United States 200 million trees per year.

• Plant a tree. Or “adopt” a tree that needs a friend to water and protect it.

Not all authors would have agreed with that. Two who come to mind are Isaac Asimov and P.G. Wodehouse. In this deal, though, declarer, in seven spades, has three choices at trick one after West leads the heart king. What are they, and which should he select?

This was a difficult bidding deal. South made what sounded to his partner like a help-suit game-try. North, holding excellent diamonds and four spades, jumped to game. Then South, out of ideas, used Blackwood with a void and finally guessed well to bid seven spades. (Users of textbook Roman Key Card Blackwood would have known that North had the diamond king, not the club king.)

The natural reaction is immediately to discard declarer’s club loser on dummy’s heart ace.

But if South does that with this layout, he goes down one, falling foul to the unlucky 4-0 diamond break.

There are two other trick-one choices. Declarer can discard a diamond on the heart ace.

Then, after drawing trumps, South can play three rounds of diamonds, ruff a diamond in his hand, return to dummy with a trump, and pitch his club loser on the 13th diamond. Alternatively, my pick: Play low from the dummy, ruff in hand, draw trumps, and turn to diamonds.

When South sees the 4-0 split, he will realize the necessity for the diamond discard on the heart ace.
