TREATING CANCER New center in Geneva offering hope to patients

ENEVA – Kevin Kelley was blindsided last October when he got the news that he had testicular cancer.

“It came as a shock,” said the 24-year-old St. Charles resident, who said he had exercised on a regular basis and tried his best to stay healthy.

“The really fortunate kind of thing is that testicular cancer is one of the three or four cancers that are entirely curable.”

According to the American Cancer Society, testicular cancer is one of the most curable forms of cancer. Kelley sought treatment at the new Cadence Cancer Center at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, which opened last September.

Cadence Health operates Delnor and Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.

The $20 million Cadence Cancer Center project was an expansion of a smaller oncology building on Delnor’s campus at 300 Randall Road.

Kelley said he felt well taken care of at the center.

“The staff are a phenomenal group of people,” Kelley said. “They are really looking to make sure that not only are they treating you, but that you were comfortable, that you were happy, that you were optimistic about everything.”

Following surgery and chemotherapy, Kelley said he recently was told that he no longer has cancer.

“It’s pretty spectacular news,” Kelley said. “We have to obviously keep an eye on things.”

Among other services, the center features a new radiation oncology suite, which offers an upgraded accelerator designed to enhance the speed and precision of radiation therapy.

“The new tools are helping people live longer and longer,” said Dr. Chris George, medical site leader for oncology services at Delnor.

Cadence Health is affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic in medical oncology. U.S. News and World Report ranked the Cleveland Clinic’s medical oncology as one of the nation’s top 10 cancer programs.

The expansion of the cancer center began in 2012. One part of the center was open through the entire project to

ensure that patients were able to continue to receive treatment.

“The last thing that you want to do with patients is take away their treatment,” said Chris King, senior manager of public relations for Cadence.

The new center is designed to provide all services for cancer patients in one convenient place. That includes private and semi-private chemotherapy rooms; exam rooms for specialized medical, surgical and radiation oncologists; specialty care teams with expertise in treating specific cancer types; an onsite infusion pharmacy and lab; and

support services, such as nutrition, genetics and financial counseling.

Man crashes car, charged with DUI

Woman in fair condition after motorcycle crash

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com A 33-year-old Brookfield woman remained hospitalized Monday afternoon after being ejected from a motorcycle Sunday just east of the Fabyan Parkway bridge, according to police.

Geneva police identified Samantha Kannon as the motorcycle driver in the single-vehicle crash, which occurred on Fabyan Parkway between the east side of the bridge and west of Route 25. Geneva police and the Batavia Fire Department were dispatched to the crash at 4:06 p.m. Sunday.

Kannon on Monday afternoon was listed in fair condition at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Kannon was turning westbound Sunday onto Fabyan Parkway from Route 25 when the rear wheel of the motorcycle struck the curb, Geneva Police Cmdr. Eric Passarelli said.

Kannon was ejected forward from the motorcycle over the handlebars and then struck by the same motorcycle as it continued rolling, Passarelli said. She was not wearing a helmet, according to the crash report.

Emergency crews found a woman, later identified as Kannon, in the westbound lanes of Fabyan Parkway, said Jami White, a Batavia fire battalion chief. She initially was taken to Delnor Hospital and later taken to Good Samaritan Hospital after the crash.

Kannon did not have any passengers Sunday, and no other vehicles were involved, White said.

The westbound Fabyan Parkway lanes were closed for a short time while emergency crews responded to the crash.

There were no road or weather conditions at the time that contributed to the crash, Passarelli said.

No tickets were issued as a result of the incident, according to a Geneva police news release.

ST. CHARLES – An Elgin man who totaled his car near Boy Scout Island last week has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs, according to a St. Charles Police Department report.

Police reported that Brady T. Moore, 28, was unable to answer direct questions about the Friday morning accident, but motorists on Route 31 described close encounters with his black Honda, which eventually collided with a guardrail and crashed in a ditch just north of downtown St. Charles.

The witnesses – some of whom had young children in their vehicles – reported seeing the Honda drive erratically as far north as Stearns Road.

At the first curve on Route 31 south of Stearns Road, Moore reportedly began to pass a car but braked because of oncoming traffic.

He then spun out but took off going south, police reported.

Another motorist reportedly told police he had to swerve to avoid a head-on collision near Silver Glen

Road because Moore’s car was heading straight at him. The motorist behind him had to do the same, the witness reportedly told police.

Moore’s driving frightened a woman because he approached her vehicle “really fast,” police reported, noting the woman was scared his car was going to hit hers.

He reportedly drove into the lined median near Timbers Trail as if to pass her.

Although he began to, police reported, he slowed and got behind her again.

“This is when the vehicle lost control and left the roadway to the right and struck the guardrail,” police reported.

Emergency officials responded to the scene about 9:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they

found the Honda in a ditch with its front right tire on the bike trail and its left front tire “nearly torn off from the vehicle,” police reported.

Moore reportedly told police and medics he had taken medications that day.

He was admitted to Delnor Hospital for observation, and police released him on his own recognizance, according to the report.

He is expected in court at the Kane County Judicial Center at 9 a.m. April 17 on charges of driving under the influence of drugs and improper lane use.

Police noted the Illinois Department of Transportation was notified about the damaged guardrail, and Moore’s car was totaled.

Hultgren calls heroin prevention ‘a top priority’

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Following up on a heroin-prevention forum that he hosted last month, U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, is seeking ideas to help move forward with a community-based approach to deal with heroin, addiction and the deaths the drug has caused.

During a meeting Monday at his Geneva congressional office, Hultgren presented a 19-page working draft action plan.

The meeting was with reporters and a father who lost a daughter last year to a heroin overdose.

Hultgren said the 19-page document will be posted online at http://hultgren.house. gov/heroin. He welcomed anyone with ideas, suggestions or edits to send them to Coalitions Director Susan Russell at susan.russell@ mail.house.gov by 5 p.m.

“Recognize, this is a first step,” Hultgren said. “We had a great meeting on March

7 … this was a very helpful event for me, full of information. The power, really, was in the roundtable discussions, where we broke up into groups and had people come up with ideas. And that is what we summarize in here, just some tentative action plans from the event.”

Hultgren said he hoped to involve doctors, hospitals Randy and insurance Hultgren companies in further discussions of how to curb heroin use in the region. About 60 officials from Kane, McHenry, DeKalb, DuPage and Lake counties participated in the March 7 forum.

The Chicago metropolitan area, including Kane County, is grappling with what law enforcement and prevention advocates call an “epidemic” of heroin use, officials said.

“We talked about three parts of this problem. First, is recognizing that it’s more than a heroin problem; there

is a drug problem out there, and – oftentimes – it begins with prescription drugs that are abused,” Hultgren said.

“And because of the high cost of prescription drugs, we are seeing people use an alternative – heroin – which is a deadly choice.”

Hultgren said he wants to do everything possible to educate the public about heroin and its dangers; support those affected by drug abuse; and provide lifetime care as part of overall treatment, recognizing that heroin addiction is a lifelong struggle.

“We want to push back and make sure that no one – whoever, no matter what the age is – makes that choice to use heroin even once,” Hultgren said. “We want to be held accountable to keep this moving.”

Hultgren said people who have opinions and ideas should share them, because he is going to use that information to create a final action plan by this summer, so it will be in place for the start of school in the fall.

“This is a top priority,”

Hultgren said. “If even one life is saved, this is worth it.”

Ken Chiakas of Des Plaines said his 17-year-old daughter, Stephanie, died March 13, 2013, of a heroin overdose in Crystal Lake.

“I’m here to tell you – you never want to face what I have. It’s the worst thing you could imagine in your life,” Chiakas said. “She was an everyday great kid, awesome personality, honor roll student at Crystal Lake South.

I’m just completely devastated, and [I’m] making it a lifelong effort to speak out and spread awareness to save

lives.”

Chiakas said he found his daughter had been addicted for possibly six months, and they tried to help her with rehab – but there were no beds available at the time.

Chiakas said he started his own organization, Save R Children.

“We are still working on building it up,” Chiakas said.

“I do have a little bit of information on there ... a prevention guide to teach parents about drugs.”

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ELGIN – A Kane County judge’s dismissal of a drowning lawsuit filed against a city, park district and Kane County was upheld by the Illinois Second District Appellate Court in Elgin.

The unanimous decision by a three-judge panel, issued late last week, agreed with the defendants – the city of Geneva, Geneva Park District and the county – that the plaintiffs failed to prove that the Fox River’s “danger here was anything other than open and obvious,” and they did not have a legal duty to warn the public about the dangers.

Randy Suchy, 57, of Bolingbrook, drowned Aug. 5, 2011, after he jumped into the Fox

River to save a 12-year-old boy near the Geneva dam.

The suit, filed by Suchy’s brother, William Suchy, in May 2012, blamed the city, park district and county for a lack of safety measures, such as warning signs and rescue equipment, and sought more than $50,000 in damages.

Nearly a year ago, Kane County Judge Edward Schreiber agreed with the city’s and park district’s contention that they don’t have control over the Geneva dam. Ed Dutton, the park district’s attorney, said only the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has “jurisdiction and supervision” over any river within the state.

“They had no duty to warn,” Schreiber had said in issuing his ruling. “It is un-

likely that any warning would have prevented Randy Suchy from entering into the river.

He entered it precisely because of the danger it posed.”

Schreiber added that “it is undisputed that rivers in general can be dangerous.”

Chicago attorney David Wise, who represented the family, said at the time, “It was not obvious to the boy how dangerous the dam is.”

Wise had argued that the local units of government had a duty to warn the public of the dangers the river posed, even as they provided access to the river.

In the appeal, Wise argued that the dam “created extremely dangerous and potentially deadly currents in the water at the downstream side of the dam … [and] that children and

The center sees 60 to 85 new patients a week. In the center’s conference room, George and other doctors get together as a team every day and talk about each case, including teleconferencing with the Cleveland Clinic.

One of those cases involved Karen Morrison of Elburn. In December, George diagnosed the 68-year-old as having lymphoma in her nose.

“It’s not something you see with great regularity,” George said. “She got chemotherapy and felt better. It was a big day when she could sniff and eat without choking.”

Morrison said her treatment has been going well.

“I’ve been very fortunate that I’ve had minimal side effects,” she said. “From the first day I walked in the center, I felt like I’ve been in good hands.”

The new center provides even more opportunities for those diagnosed with cancer, George said.

“Cadence is 100 percent committed to making this the best cancer program in the western suburbs,” he said.

Before the drowning, the 12-year-old boy was pulled into the undertow at the base of the dam. Randy Suchy jumped into the water to save the boy, but he was pulled into the boil.

Both were pulled out by bicyclists who were on the Fox River Trail.

The boy survived, but Randy Suchy died from his injuries at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

Wise did not return a message seeking comment about the appellate court’s decision.

GENEVA – Some Geneva Public Library staff members and patrons joined forces on Saturday to make a difference.

The group of 14 spent two hours packing cereal for families in need at the Northern Illinois Food Bank, 273 Dearborn Court, Geneva. They packed 940 pounds total of food, which equates to 783 meals, said Christopher Gillette, a food bank team member.

The Geneva library’s volunteer effort was the culmination of its first Conscious Choices Series, which included programs on positive choices for the environment, food, nutrition and more. Saturday’s event also included a cooking demonstration of nutritious dishes by Rebecca Colburn of Gracious Hall – a business that does catering and meals to go – in Geneva.

The series was developed after Geneva residents expressed an interest in better eating and health habits, said Kimberly Gotches, the library’s public relations and adult program associate.

“When some people think of the library ... they think of strictly books,” Gotches said.

“This is one example of an active experience of learning.”

The library group started off in an orientation about the food bank and prepared to pack food by washing hands and donning gloves, hairnets and aprons.

The volunteers took turns scooping cereal into bags, weighing them to make sure they were one pound each and then sealing each bag.

Once they had 10 bags, they were boxed up and the process was repeated.

Saturday’s event was the first time Eileen Stocking had volunteered at the food bank.

The Geneva resident signed up for the program with her daughter, Sarah, and son, Aaron, after reading about it in the library newsletter.

Stocking did not know before Saturday that the food bank works with hundreds of network partners to serve more than 60,000 people every

Stella was born April 18, 1976, in Bangued, Abra, Philippines, to parents Luciano and Jovencia Tejero. Stella immigrated to the United States in 1993, where she met and married Ivaylo Gramatikov on Nov. 16, 1996. Stella had worked at the Lombard Post Office for the past 16 years.

She is survived by her husband, Ivaylo; and her two daughters, Iva Monique, 17, and Meagan Elise, 15.

She also is survived by her mother, Jovencia; and her eight siblings, Ann Marie, Luth, Luven, Ludy, Luisa, Aurea, Cresma and Arnold.

Her father, Luciano, precedes her in death.

Geneva library staff, patrons team up at local food bank

Petting zoo owner asks court to let ponies be rented

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A petting zoo owner charged with animal cruelty and neglect has filed court papers asking if six or seven of the impounded ponies can be rented to Donley’s Wild West Town in Union.

Elgin resident Stacy Fiebelkorn, whose 94 animals were impounded last month, states in court papers that in 2012 and 2013 – from May through fall – she leased seven ponies to the small amusement park to provide pony rides.

While there, the animals are fed, housed and receive veterinary care, relieving Kane County Animal Control of the expenses associated with caring for the animals, the filing states.

But Nicole Wessel, a veterinarian who has been caring for many of the impounded animals, said the ponies have

not recovered from starvation enough to give rides at an amusement park.

“They are not capable because they are way too thin and don’t have energy because of the malnutrition – let alone to give pony rides,” Wessel said.

“We have months of weight to put on them – a good three months to get them into a conStacy dition where he Fiebelkorn [Randy Donley] would be able to use them.”

Wessel said the horses’ body condition scores still were at 1 and 2, while normal is a body condition score of 4 or 5.

“Their guts were so unhealthy with worm infestation they were not able to absorb nutrients,” Wessel said.

“We had to fix that before we can start packing on the weight. They are doing better,

[but] they are nowhere near ready for this. They are not even eating grain yet.”

Fiebelkorn voluntarily gave up rabbits, poultry and all but two goats.

The court forfeited the alpacas and llamas, and she is fighting to have the remaining 31 animals – mostly horses, ponies, mini-horses and two goats – returned to her.

A judge ruled last week that Fiebelkorn had to post $30,000 in security by Thursday, to pay for the cost of veterinary care, food and shelter for the impounded animals, many of which were sick and starving, officials said.

If she does not post the security, she would forfeit the animals, officials said.

Randy Donley of Donley’s Wild West Town said Fiebelkorn’s ponies “were always the best quality” and – despite the current charges against her – would like to lease the ponies if possible.

“I’m in absolute disbelief

about the charges against her,” Donley said. “The only thing I know is what I’ve read.

I’m always wanting to believe innocent until proven guilty.”

Donley said his first instinct was not to associate his company with Fiebelkorn, but recognized that in the past two years, her ponies were in great shape.

“If we can be of any help financially, as opposed to it costing her money, the ponies could be out making her money and helping the situation,” Donley said. “I’m not worried about some negative publicity.”

Judge Elizabeth Flood denied Fiebelkorn’s attorney’s request to allow Fiebelkorn to post a portion of the security and allow some animals to be returned to her care and custody.

Flood noted state law does not allow for partial payments on security to care for impounded animals but ruled that Fiebelkorn’s lawyer could file court papers asking for some animals to be released based on what cash she could put up.

The next court date for the animal cruelty and neglect charges, both misdemeanors, is April 17.

OPINIONS Land of opportunities (not really) The United States is often referred to as an exceptional country, which much unlike any other, has endured defying turmoil, and – rather than relinquishing with vulnerability – the country has instead progressed and has transformed into a stable and virtuous nation. However, the more the United States longs for recognition for being an accepting country, the more it fails to acknowledge that approval requires much more than the absence of reprimands. It also requires unlimited and varying forms of support.

As an undocumented student, I was inevitably exposed to mockery and belittlement by many people and under different circumstances. Yet, through it all, schools continued to encourage discipline in order to gain success;

meanwhile, the government guaranteed equality in this land of opportunities. However, as I have come to realize, neither discipline nor equality apply when one so desperately desires a higher level of education for the sole purpose of assuring a fulfilling future.

In fact, shortly after earning an associate’s degree, I began to experience the greatest amount of rejection and deterrence I have ever experienced in my life.

The government recently attempted to hearten undocumented students by creating the Dream Act, the purpose of which was to provide options so illegal immigrants could further their education. However, the intent was defeated by the indefinite amount of requirements needed in order to qualify, and the scarce

The act itself was designed to reiterate the importance of obtaining a higher level of education by simplifying the college process for children of illegal immigrants. As a result of the Dream Act, a Social Security number could be assigned to those who qualified, but that alone would not make them eligible for certain types of federal money, including grants. Excuse my

ignorance, but what? So this country is more than capable to assist those disadvantaged who desire nothing more than enlightenment, but it is not selfless enough to deliver advantages? This, to me, seems cruel and unjust. My intention is not to undermine the Dream Act, but rather to illustrate that the United States has the obligation to aid in the advancement of future generations.

This country was initially considered a melting pot for its ability to blend and adjust to different individuals, making the country authentic. Then the idea of assimilation took forth a distinct meaning with the salad bowl analogy, which encouraged every person to contribute a certain flavor to the general, nonjudgmental population. Nowadays, the

United States is referred to as a mosaic, a beautiful creation made only possible by various elements. This country has undeniably welcomed many immigrants, but is the country developed enough to commit to benefit all? The United States serves as an example to all other countries, and – therefore – it should pursue different options that will guarantee prosperous futures to all. In fact, wasn’t the country built with the objective to promote the general welfare?

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dangerous precedent To the Editor: As a result of February’s irresponsible judicial decision in Cook County that usurps the proper legislative process, some county clerks are now issuing same-sex “marriage” licenses across the state of Illinois.

While U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman believes that there “is no reason to delay further” the implementation of Illinois’ new same-sex “marriage” law, she evidently fails to recognize that creating, modifying or implementing state law is outside of the court’s purview.

Making and implementing law is strictly a function of the General Assembly. Ignoring the proper roles of the three branches of government sets an extremely dangerous precedent.

When judicial activists like Judge Coleman circumvent the legislative process, they are in essence telling the legislature that they are irrelevant. State lawmakers and county clerks should not be compliant in this gross usurpation of legislative power.

Acosta helps pitch Batavia past Kaneland

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com CAROL STREAM – It can be tough to measure a baseball team’s potential by the first couple of games, but if the early returns for Batavia stay true, the Bulldogs should have quite the season, with depth all over the field, including the pitcher’s mound.

One day after beating Benet, 6-1, to start the season, Batavia pitchers Evan Acosta, Nick Bleidorn and Mitch Boyer combined on a four-hitter Monday as the Bulldogs earned a 2-1 win against Kaneland at Pfund Field.

Batavia knew what it had in returning ace and Western Michigan recruit Jacob Piechota. Acosta could become a revelation for the Bulldogs, as the left-hander worked four innings of two-hit ball, fanning nine Knights on the day.

Bulldogs coach Matt Holm said Acosta could have played with the varsity a year ago as a sophomore, but Holm wanted him to get more at-bats. It was after a stellar summer campaign that Holm knew the Bulldogs had something in

Acosta.

“I know he is good, but last year with the staff we had we didn’t need to bring him up,” Holm said. “He hadn’t thrown a varsity inning before today, but no one touched him over the summer. He was pounding the zone and his pitch count was up because no one was touching him.”

After falling behind Kaneland leadoff hitter Joe Panico, 2-0, to start the game, Acosta needed just 10 pitches to strike out Panico, Curtin Thorson and Joe Laudont.

Acosta struck out at least two in each of his four innings, leaving with a 1-0 lead.

“It was a good outing today – I had nine strikeouts. Fastballs were working today but the curveball wasn’t really where I wanted it to be,” Acosta said.

The Bulldogs (2-0) scored their first run in the third on a Laren Eustace bloop single to right. The inning started with Sean Townsend getting hit by a pitch before Jeremy Schoessling singled to center.

After both runners moved up on a Steven Busby sacrifice bunt, Townsend was caught

trying to race home on a passed ball.

It was the bottom of the order again that produced what turned out to be the game-winning run in the fifth.

Pinch hitter Kyle Niemiec led off the inning with a double before Schoessling was hit by a pitch.

After Niemiec and Schoessling moved up on a double-steal, Busby’s sacrifice fly to left drove in Niemiec to give Batavia a 2-0 lead.

Kaneland (0-1) scored its run in the sixth in bizarre fashion. Panico led off the inning with a single up the middle off Bleidorn. On the next pitch, Thorson blooped a hit to right.

Panico noticed no one was covering third, so the senior took off. The throw was wild and Panico ended up scoring.

Thorson tried to score on the next play after Laudont reached on an error but was thrown out at home to keep the score at 2-1.

Playing for the first time since the Saints fell in the IHSA Class 4A state championship game in June, East uncorked an impressive tone-setter for the 2014 season, battering Burlington Central, 14-4, Monday in a five-inning, mercy-rule win.

Everyone in East’s lineup had at least one hit as the Saints’ depth shined on opening day.

“I just think 1 through 9, we all have the potential to be almost like 2-3-4 hitters,” East junior shortstop Olivia Cheatham said. “We all have good bats. We have the potential to go really far again.”

Cheatham, East’s No. 2 hitter, helped spark the Saints’ 14-hit attack. She started with a bunt single in the bottom of the first, then added a solo home run, double and walk.

“She worked her tail off in the offseason, gained some muscle, and you can tell, so she’ll have a good year,” East coach Kelly Horan said.

reached base in all four of her at-bats and drove in one, notching two singles to go with a walk and hit by pitch.

Left fielder Sarah Collalti supplied a pair of RBI doubles and right fielder Katie Kolb had three singles and three RBIs for the Saints.

“We should have a good offensive attack – we’ve been in the cage for a month straight inside,” Horan said. “I am very pleased with the offensive output for sure today.”

Olivia Central (0Cheatham 1) has a pair of highly regarded pitchers in lefty Brooke Gaylord and righty Emily Kisch but both struggled against the Saints (1-0), with Gaylord leaving after the fourth inning as the Rockets faced a 10-3 deficit.

“There’s no weak out in their lineup,” Central coach Wade Maisto said of the Saints. “I have two nice pitchers. We made a few mistakes behind our pitchers but they had plenty of hits, too, so it wasn’t just our mistakes.”

The Saints are working in a few new faces and some of the returnees have different roles. Cheatham played second base last year but shifted to shortstop Monday as the Saints look to replace the graduated Lexi Perez.

Horan has said Cheatham and sophomore Kelly Rinker – who started at second base Monday – will compete for the shortstop role.

Cheatham made a strong first impression there, ranging to her right to throw out speedy Rockets leadoff hitter Courtni Neubauer to open the game.

“I really like shortstop a lot,” Cheatham said. “I played it for several years on my travel team. I’d like to be there

this season.”

East played crisper defense than Central but even the Saints’ miscues worked out fine.

On a windy day, the Saints dropped a pair of infield pop flies, but one of them turned into a double play and the other a fielder’s choice out.

Horan said those fortuitous twists were improvised, saying “we’re not tricky like that.”

“You can’t teach that,” Horan said. “You’ve just got to have competitors, and I do have competitors for sure. It wasn’t cute but it was good to see.”

Kisch, Central’s cleanup hitter, went 3 for 3 with two RBIs while Northern Illinois-bound catcher Bekah Harnish was 2 for 3 with an RBI double.

Maisto acknowledged the score “doesn’t sit very well” with him but stands by the Rockets’ prospects for a big season, noting that last year’s team looked sharp early but lost steam at the end.

“I guess there’s got to be a balance,” Maisto said. “I’d like to be a little better than what we were today but the focus is May, not March and April. But I do think we can certainly do better than we did.”

Kane County unveils Opening Day roster KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE GENEVA – The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Cubs, announced Monday the team’s preliminary Opening Day roster.

The Cougars’ roster under second-year manager Mark Johnson includes four of the top 30 Cubs organizational prospects according to a preseason publication by Baseball America.

Right-handed pitcher Paul Blackburn (ranked 12th

by BA) started 12 games at Short-A Boise last season, going 2-3 with a 3.33 ERA. Blackburn was the 56th over-

all pick in the 2012 draft.

Tyler Skulina (ranked 19th

by BA), a right-handed pitcher who was a fourth round pick by the Cubs last summer, returns to Kane County. Skulina made four starts with the Cougars in 2013.

Left-handed pitcher Nathan Dorris, who was named a Midwest League All-Star last season, also returns to Kane County.

The Cougars have received 19-year old Jen-Ho Tseng, who will make his U.S. professional debut this spring.

Tseng was signed by the Cubs last summer and was ranked 29th on MLB.com’s list of top 30 international prospects in

2013.

Outfielder Shawon Dunston, Jr, son of former Cub Shawon Dunston, is Kane County-bound to open the season. Dunston played in 49 games with Boise in 2013, batting .290 and swiping 12 bases. Jake Hannemann (ranked 17th by BA) was drafted in the third round by the Cubs out of BYU last summer and played in 14 games at Boise last season. Trey Martin, who opened last season in Geneva but suffered a season-ending shoulder injury, breaks spring training camp as a Cougar.

tal of eight players spent all or a portion of the 2013 season with the Cougars. The group of 26 players will be reduced to a Midwest League-mandated squad of 25 before Thursday’s 7 p.m. season opener against the Quad Cities River Bandits in Iowa.

The team was scheduled to arrive from the Cubs’ spring training complex in Arizona on Monday and will have two days of team workouts before opening the season.

The team’s home opener will be April 8 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark against the Fort Wayne Tin Caps, a San Diego Padres farm team.

Monday’s opening day lineup couldn’t have produced much better for St. Charles East coach Kelly Horan, but Horan promised to give her entire roster a chance to earn spots as the spring unfolds.

“This is our first rotation,” Horan said after the Saints clubbed Burlington Central, 14-4, in five innings. “Who knows where these kids will end up? I know I have 13 good ballplayers, and they’re all going to get an opportunity here in the early-season games.”

The first six batters in Horan’s opening-day lineup – Tess Hupe, Olivia Cheatham, Sarah Collalti, Kate Peterburs, Alex Latoria and Katie Kolb – each were fixtures in the Saints lineup when East finished second in Class 4A last year.

The new-look, bottom third of East’s lineup also was productive Monday. Senior Mackenzie Lofgren was the Saints’ designated player, going 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a walk, while sophomore second baseman Kelly Rinker had a hit and an RBI in the No. 8 hole and senior pitcher Haley Beno batted ninth, notching an RBI single in the third inning.

Beno saw some at-bats last season but focused on her pitching duties in the later stages of the season.

Horan said East’s other players – including senior Mackenzie Meadows, who started at catcher but did not hit Monday – will also have their turns to make a case for playing time as Horan evaluates her options leading

“It was fun to see kind of our first try at this, and gosh, it was kind of a nice balance, righty-lefty-righty-lefty, power and speed,” Horan said.

“But nothing to write home about yet. It was just the first game. We’re going to keep rotating kids through at the beginning of the year here.”

Youth movement up middle for Knights Kaneland coach Brian Willis isn’t ready to commit to it, but it’s a legitimate possibility that the Knights’ middle infield will consist of a pair of freshmen as the season progresses.

That wasn’t the original plan but senior second baseman Allie Miller suffered a groin injury recently during practice and figures to be out

at least two months, Willis said.

Among the Plan B options at second base, Willis said freshman Rachel Goress is a leading contender. Fellow freshman Morgan Weber is likely to see most of the time at shortstop, although Youngstown State recruit Lexi Roach – a senior outfielder – also is an option at shortstop if need be.

While relying on freshmen in the middle infield might not be ideal, Willis said Goress and Weber have the talent to grow into quality players.

“They’ll go through some growing pains but they should be OK,” Willis said.

Burlington Central saw rallies hampered on multiple occasions during Monday’s loss to St. Charles East when runners were thrown out trying to take an extra base, but Rockets coach Wade Maisto endorsed the aggressive baserunning.

“We don’t want to stop that philosophy,” Maisto said. “So if I make some mistakes in March and April that we have to tone back a little bit, that’s fine. But I want us looking to take the extra base. The couple outs we had trying to take the extra base, that’s on me, because that’s what I want us to do.”

Maisto credited East’s defense with making solid throws during the Saints’ 14-4 win. Collalti made a strong throw from left field to cut down a Rockets runner at third base to end the top of the fifth.

“Teams don’t always make the plays like St. Charles,” Maisto said. “They made us look bad today, you can always second guess, but I don’t second guess the philosophy. We’re going to try and stay aggressive on the basepaths, and if things like this happen, then things like this happen.”

All right, so we know teams like St. Charles East, St. Charles North, Kaneland and Burlington Central are going to win a ton of games this year.

All of those teams have the talent to win 25 to 30 games or more, and it’ll be fun to see those seasons take shape. But Sly wants to know what under-the-radar teams might rise up this spring?

Is there an overlooked team capable of surprising people, maybe a team like Geneva or Rosary or ACC? Heck, the Chargers sure caught people off guard last postseason, but playing in 3A instead of 2A this year, it’ll take some doing for ACC to come out of the woodwork again.

DeKALB – Kaneland softball junior pitcher Angie Morrow threw a one-hitter Monday against Batavia as the Knights topped the Bulldogs, 4-0, in an indoor game at the DeKalb Sports and Recreation Center.

“I just thought she hit her spots real well today,” Kaneland coach Brian Willis said of Morrow. “She kept Batavia’s hitters off balance all day long. They got one single off her so I think that was key, just hitting her spots.”

Kaneland’s Lanie Callaghan went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI and Willis credited Hayley Contorno with a couple key bunts.

The lone hit for Batavia (0-1) came from sophomore Brieann Cruz.

Bulldogs coach Lupe Castellanos praised the pitching performance from freshman Rachael Lovestrand.

Kaneland (3-0) has played three indoor games – also sweeping Riverside-Brook-

field in a doubleheader – and now turns its attention to a spring break trip to Tennessee.

Willis said the Knights are guaranteed four games in the tournament and could play as many as six.

“I think everybody is excited all the way from the coaching staff down to to the last player, we just want to get outside, and it’s supposed to be nice weather out there according to the weatherman,” Willis said.

Allen couldn’t be more ‘excited’ Jared Allen is “excited!”

In a 25-minute question and answer session, Allen used the word excited 20 times.

This guy is too amped to be faking it.

What Allen is the most excited about are some of the Bears’ veterans he’ll be joining, and his real belief his new club can contend for a Super Bowl.

Allen spoke reverently about Lance Briggs, Charles Tillman and Tim Jennings, but the guy he’s the most “excited” to play with is Jeremiah Ratliff.

“One of the people that excites me the most is Jay Ratliff. He is an absolute beast in the middle. What he can do from the nose tackle spot or the three-technique is huge.

To have a guy that can consistently get 3 or 4 yards deep means the quarterback’s got

one way to go, to him or me.”

Allen just hasn’t gotten the memo yet about Ratliff’s name now being Jeremiah.

He also appears to be over the moon about being a Bear.

“I’m here for a reason. All my criteria were met after talking to the coaches, but I have to know that I can fit in here. Knowing the history of the Chicago Bears is super cool. I’ve always liked Chicago – I’ve got family here.

For me it all kind of fell in line at the right time at the right place. When everything lined up there was no doubt this was the best fit for myself, for my family and what I see as the future going forward. We have a great chance to win.”

Allen is also impressed with general manager Phil Emery, coach Marc Trestman and Vice President of Football Administration Cliff Stein.

“It’s a cool feeling when you go into an offseason knowing you have a chance to win,” he said. “In the NFL, as players, all we ask

for is a chance to win every game you’re in. My excitement comes with being here, knowing that there’s going to be opportunities to play some great defense and win multiple games.

“It came down to fit. You never know who’s going to win a Super Bowl. If I had a glass [pretty sure he meant crystal] ball to tell me, great, but I wanted a chance to go out and win a Super Bowl, and when everything lined up, Chicago is where I was supposed to be. All respect to Seattle, it’s a great organization but this is where I was supposed to be.”

Allen did want to make perfectly clear; he didn’t come to Chicago to be a situational pass rusher.

“I’m gonna play. I like to break a guy down and I know, if I work on him long enough,

he’s going to make a mistake.

I come from an old-school mentality, so I’m not going to tap my helmet. I’ll be smart about it . . . but I wouldn’t be here if they told me I was going to be a third-down rush guy. I feel like I can make waves, I want to win a Super Bowl. I feel like I’m still the best at what I do, if not thee, one of.”

Bears fans hope he’s right, but this much is already sure.

There is a new attitude around Halas Hall these days.

Emery keeps talking about winning championships, and now with Allen here, he’s got the players believing they can.

mmontemurro@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – Each Opening Day the previous 15 years, White Sox captain Paul Konerko could be found manning first base.

It was an odd sight Monday at U.S. Cellular Field, during the White Sox’s season opening 5-3 win against the Minnesota Twins, to watch Konerko sit on the bench while Cuban slugger Jose Abreu debuted at first.

Although Opening Day signifies a new season, it also brings the beginning to the end of an era for the White Sox. Konerko, who will retire at the end of the season, is the last player remaining from the White Sox’s 2005 World Series title team. Yet Konerko and the White Sox have no qualms about the situation.

“Throughout the whole game, Paulie actually came and congratulated me when I made a good play or hit the ball,” Abreu said through an interpreter. “That’s something I’m very thankful for.

As Konerko steps back and takes on a reduced role this season, guys like Abreu, Chris Sale and Adam Eaton represent the new era.

Sale, who made his second consecutive Opening Day start, delivered a solid performance, allowing three runs on five hits in 7⅓ innings with eight strikeouts to pick up the win. And he walked off the field to a standing ovation.

“I think [Sale] controlled his emotions of opening the first game and going out there and really putting us in a position to win,” manager Robin Ventura said. “And the young guys, they were ex-

citing and I think again the [windy] conditions you really had to concentrate and for us to play a clean game defensively is big and is just a step in the right direction.”

Five White Sox made their first career Opening Day starts – Abreu, Eaton, Avisail Garcia, Conor Gillaspie and Marcus Semien – and it’s the start of a youth infusion that general manager Rick Hahn believes the team needs.

“I do think the energy has changed,” Hahn said. “I do think the vibe has changed.

And I think a lot of people in the front office and the coaches’ room and the clubhouse are excited about the direction we’re going. But we’re going to be tested.”

The White Sox will still have some hiccups this season as youngsters gain bigleague experience.

Semien, who is starting at second base while Gordon Beckham continues to recover from an oblique strain, went 0 for 4 in Monday’s win and Garcia finished 2 for 4.

Both struck out and hit into a double play.

But what happened with the Cubs’ hitting in their season opener Monday – more specifically, what didn’t happen – looked more like a repeat of their miserable performance at the plate throughout last season than anything resembling a fresh start.

Not that it should be a surprise, considering the primary difference between this group of hitters and last year’s is that 30-homer run producer Alfonso Soriano was traded away, and slap-hitting, table-setter Emilio Bonifacio was added.

Bonifacio did his part Monday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, but nobody drove him in, and the Cubs wasted a strong Opening Day pitching performance from Jeff Samardzija in a 1-0 loss at PNC Park.

The game ended on Neil Walker’s home run off Carlos Villanueva leading off the bottom of the 10th inning.

But this one was decided

Cubs at Pittsburgh, 6:05 p.m., Wednesday, CSN+, AM-720 long before that, when the Cubs put the leadoff man on five times before extra innings without scoring – three times putting him at second with none out. They reached third base once.

If this wasn’t a tone-setter for the new season, it was at least a reminder of the same old stuff from last year.

“You can only control what you can control,” said Samardzija, who pitched seven efficient innings – for 15 total scoreless innings over his consecutive Opening Day starts.

“We have a bat, too. We have a say in how it turns out. ...

“But ultimately, we’re out there pitching, and that’s our job. These guys are working hard; they’re doing what they can do; and we have their back 100 percent.”

Colorful and sparkling glass beads imported from Europe added to the knit and embroidered purses that were in style. In the early 1800s, the reticule or drawstring bag was “in.” It was knitted with a bead in each stitch.

And each bag had a drawstring closure and a long tassel at the bottom. By the 1840s, glass beads were used as trim on dresses and hats. The reticule was out, and rectangular beaded purses were made with geometric or pictorial designs and fancy metal frames. Early 1900s fashions went back to the earlier beaded purses, and sometimes old frames were reused. Metal beads came into use in the 1840s and were especially popular in purses. The beaded purses of flapper days often had deco designs, metal beads, fringe and a maker’s label inside. In the 1970s and ‘80s, beaded purses were back for cocktail parties but again lost favor by 2000. Now is the time to look for antique glass beaded purses. Prices have gone up during the past 10 years, but the bags are still bargains if you want a special purse. A collector today must examine a purse carefully to determine its age and quality. *** Q: I have a Featherweight Singer sewing machine that has a seal on the right side of the top that reads “Golden Gate Exposition 1939.” I also have the original attachments, black case and instruction booklet. I would like to sell it all. Do you know what the set is worth and where I can sell it?

A: Singer was founded in New York City by Isaac Merritt Singer in 1851.

The company still is in business. The Featherweight, Model No. 221, was introduced at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933 and was made until 1964.

It’s smaller and lighter in weight than earlier models because parts were made out of aluminum instead of cast iron. Machines with the “Golden Gate Exposition 1939” badge were made in October 1938. Not many were sold and machines in working condition with attachments, case and manual do sell today, often to be used. The Exposition badge adds a little to the machine’s value. Most vintage sewing machines sell for a few hundred dollars. *** Q: My old earthenware pot with two handles stands 6 inches high and holds about 3 1/2 quarts. “Red Wing, Provincial Ware, 29.” My oldest sister used to make baked beans in it for our family of seven. Is it worth anything?

A: The number “29” on your pot is the style number Red Wing gave to its four-quart stock pot. It’s sometimes advertised as a bean pot. The Provincial Ware bean pot came in quart and 1 1/2 quart sizes. Red Wing Pottery was in business in Red Wing, Minn., from 1878 to 1967. The company started out making stoneware jugs and canning jars and other utilitarian pottery, and later made dinnerware, vases and art pottery. Its Provincial Cooking Ware was introduced in 1941. Pieces from the line were reintroduced in 1963 and are marked on the bottom, not the side.

Judge’s ‘Silicon Valley’ HBO comedy brings to life the world of tech nerds

By ROGER CATLIN Special to The Washington Post Before he created “Beavis and Butt-Head” and “King of the Hill,” Mike Judge was a physics major working as an engineer in Silicon Valley, writing software for aircraft carriers for the F/A-18 fighter jet.

He took some mental notes on how weird it all was.

“It’s a lot of antisocial introverted people thrown together,” he says over the phone in his deep, halting voice – closer to Hank Hill than Butt-Head (both of whom he voiced in those series). “A lot of these guys would not fit in another workplace.”

But together, they make a humorous gang of nerds in hoodies, who spend their days writing code in hopes of becoming the newest startup millionaires – roles that they are even less suited to fill, even as they try on their Steve Jobs-style turtlenecks.

That’s the premise behind “Silicon Valley,” the new HBO comedy he has made with Alec Berg that premieres April 6.

“Silicon Valley” stars a group of mostly young comic actors led by Thomas Middleditch, T.J. Miller, Kumail Nanjiani, Martin Starr and Josh Brener, playing programmers who share a suburban house – an incubator – as they work on their various ideas in a town eager to gobble them up.

Almost immediately in the story, there’s a battle between two Silicon Valley giants and corporate seers over a compression app created by Middleditch’s character Richard.

It’s tough for Richard to run a company or deal with people “while he’s still trying to work out the kinks to his own algorithms,” he says.

“It’s like every episode, you feel you’re dealing with more and more money and more and more outcomes, and more and more at stake in the whole thing.”

“I thought about doing something in this area for a long time,” Judge says. But, suddenly, everybody had an idea about it. John Altschuler, a writer on “King of the Hill” who is an executive producer here, “had an idea about doing a show like ‘Dallas’ or ‘Falcon Crest’ but instead of oil or wine money, it would be about tech money,” Judge says.

Then HBO approached with an idea to do a series about video game players, Judge says. “And I didn’t

know the gaming world at all. But I did know this world.”

Berg, a former writer on “Seinfeld” and executive producer of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” had some familiarity as well. “My dad was a Harvard biophysicist, and my brother was an electric engineer who worked for Microsoft, worked for Vulcan, went to Stanford for computer science,” he says over the phone interview, “so it was very much in my life.”

But there was a reason there hadn’t been a series about the digital boom.

“We’ve been joking that we’re doing a series about something that’s inherently unfilmable,” Berg says.

While it’s understandable to have police, fire and emergency room TV shows, where “every 10 minutes a story comes running through your door,” he says, “watching guys type is not super exciting. So, we’re consequently having to figure out ways to make what these guys do

interesting and presentational, visual.”

Judge had heard it before.

“When I did ‘Office Space,’” he says, referring to the 1998 cult comedy film, “there was some concern back then about: How are you going to make a movie about people who sit in desks? But I think because there’s not obvious action stuff there, it’s kind of a challenge that ends up yielding really interesting character stuff. I think that ended up happening with this, too. “ The cast resembles the kind of nerd gangs that populate the burgeoning industry, and the two are happy with the group of actors they got to portray them, who largely came up from improv comedy groups.

“They all seemed like they could play believable engineer types,” says Judge, who rewrote the series to fit them all in.

“One thing that’s a little tricky when you’re casting nerds,” he says, “you get all these guys who have been in a million of these commercials where it’s FedEx or something, when there’s a guy sitting at a desk. There’s this real fine line between somebody who is kind of cartoony nerdy and somebody who you believe can play intelligent and be funny at same time. And I think we have a pretty amazing cast that’s able to do that.”

And maybe they’re not acting that much. “Between takes of the show, they’re actually, literally playing Magic: The Gathering,” a trading card game, Berg says.

Mental exercises may help slow age-related memory loss Dear Doctor K: As I get older, I’ve noticed that I have more trouble remembering certain types of information. But other types of memory are as strong as ever. Is this true, or just wishful thinking on my part?

Dear Reader: You’ve made an interesting observation – and an accurate one. As we age, some information does become harder to recall, and new memories may be harder to lay down in the brain.

But other memories remain as accessible as ever.

In particular, there is truth in the old saying that “You never forget how to ride a bicycle.”

Procedural memory – by which you remember processes and skills such as how to ride a bike, serve a tennis ball or accomplish routine tasks – does not fade with age. In fact, it’s so resilient that it remains intact even in people with early- to mid-stage Alzheimer’s.

But other kinds of memory are more likely to decline with age.

These include: • Images and details of experiences you have had. For example, which stock you sold last year from your retirement account.

• Factual knowledge, such as remembering the exact year

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff World War I started. (As I wrote this, I realized I wasn’t sure myself which year it was. But, with a little help from Wikipedia, I learned it was 1914.)

• Spatial memory. For example, learning the directions to a new location.

It’s not just that you learn this sort of information more slowly; you may have more trouble recalling it because you hadn’t fully learned it in the first place.

Some of what we know about age-related memory loss comes from studies of animals. In one study, older mice took longer to learn to escape from a maze than younger mice.

These results are consistent with what we notice about ourselves as we age. Say, for example, that you and your grandchild learn a new computer game together. Chances are that the next day the child will remember more of the details of how to play the game than you do.

Willpower and effort can overcome some age-related difficul-

ties. We now know that in many instances, if you make the effort to learn something well, you’ll be able to recall it as well as a younger person can.

Mental exercises probably can help, too. This is a controversial area, since some studies have not found a clear benefit from mental exercises, while others have. Why the inconsistent results? There probably are two reasons. The first is that the people who participate in the studies are different.

In some studies, the participants have no detectable mental deficits. In other studies, participants have mild cognitive impairment.

The second reason is that there are many different types of mental exercises. Some may work, and others may not. That’s why I’m dubious of absolute statements like “mental exercises work.” I think we will find that some specific types of exercises do work for specific types of people.

And I hope that happens soon – so that I’ll always know when World War I started!

What should declarer do?

A one-no-trump overcall shows about 15.5-17.5 points – a tad stronger than a one-notrump opening – because it is a dangerous bid to make. If the responder has a good hand, he will double for penalty, and unless the overcaller’s partner has a long suit in which to seek refuge, the penalty could be sizable.
