Batavia cop retires after 28 years

Route 47 will be closed to traffic from Ramm Road to McDonald Road from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday to install culvert crossings across Route 47, according to a news release from the Kane County Department of Transportation.

The roadway improvements will include the removal and installation of new cross culverts on Route 47, states the release.

A posted detour route will direct traffic around the closure using Route

64 and Burlington Road to the south, and Dittman Road and Plato Road to the north, according to the release.

Motorists are advised to follow the posted detour routes around the project and to expect increased travel times. Local traffic will be permitted within the road closure, states the release.

The improvement is part of the construction of a new roundabout at the intersection, according to the release.

LOCAL BRIEFS Kane Forest Preserve District to host senior stroll programs

SUGAR GROVE – The Forest Preserve District of Kane County invites seniors to its free monthly senior stroll programs. The next event takes place from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at Bliss Woods Forest Preserve, 5S660 Bliss Road, Sugar Grove.

Other events take place from 10 a.m. to noon May 5 at Camp Tomo Chi-Chi Knolls, 40W095 Freeman Road, Gilberts, and from 10 a.m. to noon June 2 at Fabyan West Forest Preserve, 1925 Batavia Ave., Geneva.

The strolls last about an hour, with social time and refreshments after the walk.

St. Charles teacher to speak at creative writing and arts awards

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles native Andy McPeak, who teaches social studies, creative writing and illustration at Wredling Middle School, is the speaker for a creative writing awards ceremony sponsored by the American Association of University Women, Batavia-St. Charles-Geneva branch.

Noting that Batavia’s rapid growth helped to produce more crime, “It was nothing we weren’t able to keep up with,” Perez said.

Perez was honored Monday by police Chief Gary Schira, Mayor Jeff Schielke and the Batavia City Council.

“Eddie Perez has reflected the very best attributes of the Batavia Police Department,” Schielke said, adding that Perez often went out of his way to provide “compassionate care” to crime victims.

Perez, 51, is a resident of Aurora.

His wife, Liz Perez, is the assistant finance director for the city of Batavia.

FARSIGHTED PRE-SCHOOLERS MAY FALL BEHIND Because farsighted individuals see distant objects more clearly than near objects, they must often squint their eyes to read and perform other up-close tasks. Unless this refraction error is corrected with prescription lenses before a farsighted child reaches first grade, he or she is likely to lose ground on reading skills. This was the finding of the first large-scale study to examine farsightedness and reading readiness among 4- and 5-year-olds. It is estimated that 4 percent to 14 percent of preschool children have moderate farsightedness, which children rarely complain about because they are not aware that anything is wrong with their vision. Thus, it is highly recommended that parents schedule comprehensive eye exams for their preschoolers.

A RALLY TO HONOR FRIENDSHIP ‘Thank you for caring so much for one another’

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The “Graduation 2016” sign in the entrance at The Well Church announced for Taylor Shaffer that Wednesday night’s event was not a Bible study, but a surprise graduation for her and her special friend, Thomas Meier.

“I was so surprised,” Shaffer said.

“This is awesome. I loved it.”

Meier, who has Down syndrome, and Shaffer became great friends through Geneva High School’s educational life skills and adaptive physical education class. The program pairs students with a special needs counterpart, said Josie Wallace, who teaches the class.

Meier and Shaffer are 18 and would have graduated together this year – except Meier’s family is moving to Los Angeles next week because of a job transfer.

The planning started during a church mission trip to Guatemala last month, Karen Meier said.

“I get this text from Taylor’s mom [Carrie Shaffer] in Guatemala that Taylor found out Tom was not going to be walking with her at graduation as she anticipated,” Karen Meier said. “She just loves Tom and she was crying.”

John Gilmore and Jerry Shaffer, pastors at The Well Church in Geneva, were also on the mission trip. “How could we honor that friendship?”

Gilmore said he asked himself.

The surprise grew to include more than 50 guests and 18 students, as well as Thomas Meier and another special needs student, David Lester, to participate in the ceremony.

When the Meiers adopted Thomas at 3 weeks old, they already had five children, ranging in age from 2 to 13 years old, she said. Their youngest at the time, Steven, also had Down syndrome.

“They look so much alike, people ask me if they are twins,” Karen Meier said.

“Steve and Tom are just the best buddies.”

bschory@shawmedia.com Less than an hour before he hanged himself while in custody Jan. 5 in the booking area of the Kane County Jail, Piotr Dutkiewicz’s mental health evaluation stated, “There was no indication that Dutkiewicz wanted to harm himself.”

The medical form indicates no problems, except that Dutkiewicz “had been drinking alcohol,” and a review of the video of his interview showed “no signs of distress,” Kane County Sheriff’s Office records indicate Dutkiewicz’s mental health evaluation shows it was signed off at 3:46 p.m. However – less than an hour later – he took his own life after he was left alone in a restroom for nearly 20 minutes.

Records obtained from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office through the Freedom of Information Act, as well as the Kane County coroner autopsy report, detail the last day of Dutkiewicz’s life – from his arrest that morning to when he was found hanging from a tension door closer that afternoon – as well as measures taken to try to save his life.

While being processed in the booking area, Dutkiewicz answered all of the questions put to him – that he was divorced and homeless, that he had a master’s degree and had served in the army in his native Poland. Dutkiewicz was said to be “mentally alert” and “oriented,” though it was noted that he had consumed a “potentially dangerous level of alcohol,” according to his medical intake form.

To the question of how much alcohol he drank, Dutkiewicz responded, “until I pass out,” records show.

He was screened by the medical staff at 12:40 p.m. with the recommendation that he go to alcohol detox and be assigned to a “low bunk, no razor while on detox,” records show.

Dutkiewicz ate a lunch of ham; macaroni and cheese; some mixed vegetables of peas, green beans and carrots; cornbread; salad; a cookie; and a drink, Lt. Pat Gengler said.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office conducted a review of its policies and procedures and determined that there were no violations in regards to Dutkiewicz’s death, according to a news release from Sheriff Donald Kramer.

However, results of an additional jail review, released this week through a Freedom of Information Act request, state, “In light of recent events, these

bathrooms need to be monitored more closely.”

“If the detainee is in there for more than five minutes, then an officer WILL be sent to check on them,” the additional review states. “I also want us to get detainees changed over into orange [jail clothes] sooner ... . These changes are to be implemented immediately.”

The additional review also called for the restroom doors to be changed to a “dressing-room type door or a curtain of some sort.”

In an email, Gengler wrote that being “booked” means to be “interviewed, obtain authorization of the charges from the [states’ attorney’s office], complete the paperwork, give that to jail staff, then they complete the process. There is not [a] standard timeframe on that.”

As to the length of time Dutkiewicz was alone in the restroom – 17 to 18 minutes according to the coroner’s records – Gengler’s email states, “Jail standards require checks on inmates every 30 minutes for regular inmates and 20 for those on suicide watch.”

Initially, officials did not respond to questions about whether there is a standard length of time that applies to a restroom visit while still in the booking area.

The only details provided to the Kane County Chronicle on the matter were the results of the additional jail review provided through the Freedom of Information Act on Wednesday.

••• The rate of suicide in county jails is higher than in prisons, according

to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, Deaths in Custody Reporting Program.

In 2013, the jail suicide rate was 46 for every 100,000, while the prison suicide rate was 15 for every 100,000, the bureau reported. The rate among the general U.S. population is 13 for every 100,000, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dutkiewicz, 51, was arrested the morning of Jan. 5 while sheriff’s deputies were evicting him from his house in the 600 block of Forrest Avenue in Elgin.

“He had an unknown device in his hands, which he then turned and placed on the front porch of the residence,” according to a sheriff’s deputy’s arrest report released through a Freedom of Information Act request.

“When I got near him and asked what he put on the porch, he stated, ‘It’s a bomb and there’s 16 more throughout the house.’ “ There were no bombs, but Dutkiewicz was charged with threatening a public official – a felony – and disorderly conduct.

“Piotr smelled of alcohol, was unsteady on his feet and had glassy, bloodshot eyes at this time,” states the deputy’s report. “I asked him if he had been drinking, which he said yes, he had been drinking Smirnoff vodka during the night.”

The report continues, stating that when Dutkiewicz arrived at the Kane County Adult Correctional Center, “I completed the inmate medical intake form and advised medical of Piotr’s admission to consuming alcohol.

Medical personnel advised they could smell the alcohol as well.”

“Piotr advised he was downstairs in his basement working on his model trains and drinking Smirnoff vodka during the night and had not slept at all last night,” the report states.

“Piotr did not recall saying anything about a bomb to me at any time,” states the report. “Piotr stated he did not wish to harm anyone and he might have said something only in a ‘joking manner.’ Repeatedly, Piotr said he did not recall saying the device was a bomb, or that there were 16 more in the house.”

••• At the time of his death, Dutkiewicz was 5 feet, 6 inches tall, weighed 130 pounds and was wearing two pairs of sweatpants, according to the coroner’s records.

He was still wearing his own clothes, records show, and had not been issued the bright orange clothing

Records show Dutkiewicz asked to use the restroom in the booking area at 4:26 p.m.

The restroom door, identified as I19, could only be opened electronically from the booking control desk or by using a key, records show.

Dutkiewicz was found hanging with his feet off of the floor from the restroom’s tension door closer at 4:44 p.m. He had tied the drawstrings from his two pairs of sweatpants around his neck and tied them to the tension door closer in the restroom, using an overturned garbage can to stand on, records show.

“The ends of the drawstrings were frayed,” the sheriff’s report notes.

••• Paul Wright, editor of Prison Legal News, a project of the Human Rights Defense Center based in Lake Worth, Florida, said it should not have been physically possible for Dutkiewicz to have hanged himself. In a separate legal matter, Prison Legal News is suing Kane County and the sheriff in federal court, alleging they violated prisoners’ rights by not allowing them to receive the publication.

“They are having a moment of crisis,” Wright said. “Government officials try to con the public into believing, ‘There’s nothing we can do about it.’ We know actually that is not true.

For most people who try to kill themselves, they are in a crisis period in their lives. Generally, they are not going to kill themselves.”

Wright said it does not matter that hundreds of arrestees are processed at the Kane County jail every day without hurting themselves. The jail’s average population is about 500 inmates, officials said.

The Kane County jail had two other recent inmate suicides, Keith Renfro Jr. in 2012 and Terry Hart in 2013.

Both died by hanging.

••• Once Dutkiewicz was discovered hanging, deputies took him down and immediately began lifesaving measures while they waited for paramedics to arrive, records show.

Fox River and Countryside Fire Protection District paramedics arrived at 4:56 p.m. and took over resuscitation efforts from the jail staff, coroner’s records show.

They put in an endotracheal tube to aid in breathing and gave him oxygen, coroner records show.

Slodkiewicz also was named in the court records of the foreclosure and eviction from the Elgin property.

She told deputies they were friends who knew each other for 25 years, records show.

“I spoke with his friend, who said he was upset and talking about killing himself,” states a sheriff’s deputy’s report. “He was upset about losing his house and did not want to live.

Slodkiewicz told me that she spoke with police during the eviction on the morning of [Jan. 5] but did not tell them about his suicidal thoughts.”

She told sheriff’s deputies that she contacted Dutkiewicz’s brother and sister in Poland about his death.

When contacted by a reporter, Slodkiewicz said Dutkiewicz was buried on March 23. She said that she was upset and could not talk about his death.

epinephrine – a drug used in resuscitation – and administered an automatic external defibrillator.

After the fifth round of epinephrine, paramedics detected a pulse, coroner’s records show.

Paramedics left the booking area at 5:28 p.m., continuing to work on Dutkiewicz, giving him atropine, a drug used to regulate the heartbeat, records show.

Dutkiewicz had a “strong pulse” of 70 beats per minute, but after paramedics pulled into the ambulance bay at Delnor Hospital in Geneva at 5:33 p.m., the pulse was lost and he stopped breathing, coroner records show.

Unsuccessful lifesaving measures were taken at Delnor’s emergency room at 5:35 p.m. and a doctor pronounced Dutkiewicz dead at 5:44 p.m.

The pathologist estimated it took him two minutes to lose consciousness and die of suffocation, coroner’s records show.

Dutkiewicz’s blood-alcohol content was 0.042 percent, according to the toxicology report.

Most of the calls were about long lines, which McMahon attributed to the presidential election and that Illinois now allows for same-day registration. That registration option took equipment and manpower away from the general voting efforts, he said.

Other complaints addressed the placement of campaign signs and people cutting in line, an issue that falls under the purview of the election judges, McMahon said.

Another issue that arose during the primary – and one that McMahon has heard since then – was that voters had to audibly announce which ballot they wanted – Democratic or Republican.

McMahon characterized it as a privacy issue, as people in line could overhear voters’ selections.

In addition to handling the hotline, members of McMahon’s staff visited each of the county’s approximately 90 polling locations, he said.

For parents, kids, nature fun can go hand-in-hand

editorial@kcchronicle.com No matter what you do in life, things just seem to be more fun when they can be shared, and the spring roster of programs at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, 3795 Campton Hills Drive, St. Charles, is teeming with activities that give parents and children tons of chances to play and learn together.

“These programs are all about raising comfort levels,” said Laura McCoy, nature programs supervisor for Hickory Knolls. “There’s the comfort level that comes from being introduced to nature and understanding what may have been off-putting before, and the comfort level that comes from simply being outdoors in fresh air and sunshine. It’s also sometimes a comfort just to have a stretch of time when you’re away from the pressures of normal life, like technology and schedules and responsibilities.”

Nature is, of course, simply the best way to accomplish all this, and two simply grand nature programs celebrate

elemental – well, elements – of Mother Nature at her finest. “Get Growing” takes a look at how plants grow through fun activities, such taking a seed viewer on a springtime stroll through the Native Plant Garden at Pottawatomie Community Center.

Of course, so many outdoor plans come with the disclaimer, “weather permitting.” Whether the weather will be rainy or sunny, windy or warm can be the deciding factor in so many activities.

The “Simply Grand Nature: Weather Watchers” program takes a look at how changeable our Midwestern weather can be, and participants hopefully will take a walk outdoors at the Pottawatomie Community Center firsthand to experience it.

I have spent more money in BEFORE THE the past month than I probably DIPLOMA have in the past year alone.

While I may be an amateur Denise Cartina at math, I haven’t completely forgotten how to handle my money. Rather, I bought some much-needed items and a handful of necessities I didn’t so much need but merely wanted. Never mind that I’m going to be thousands of dollars in debt in the next few years, sometimes a girl has to shop and there is nothing you can do but let her do so.

In all fairness, I needed a new cellphone. My old one was beginning to deny messages from people, and the battery drained itself even when I wasn’t using it. My dad and I walked into T-Mobile. I picked out a phone, waited for 20 minutes for the store clerk to plug numbers into the computer; and I walked out a few hundred dollars poorer. No big deal, I needed a new phone. I also needed a new pair of capris, so I checked that off my spring clothes list. I also got some other clothes because I was in desperate need of new summer tank tops. I’ve recently discovered many of my summer clothes are getting to the point where they have lasted longer than I initially wanted.

However, what I didn’t exactly need was a new mint green purse (but it was such a pretty color), a Blackhawks jersey (but I have wanted one for so long) and new high-waist jean shorts (they’re so comfortable and flattering). I know, I should be trying to save, save, save all my money that my paychecks are awarding me. I vow to spend only $5 each week for the next month or two. I will allow myself to buy one stick of gum, a headband and an individually wrapped Twinkie. Does that make you all happy?

I feel as if many of us try to deny ourselves necessity items merely because we feel as if every penny that we earn must be put into not a “want” item but a “need” item. I know I, like most individuals, cannot afford to buy necessity products all the time. Yet, there is no denying that everyone needs to treat themselves every once in a while. If you’re just browsing a department store and see a cute pair of sandals on sale that magically fit your feet, buy them. If you are waiting in line to check out of the grocery store and you see a Snickers bar calling your name, even though it is overpriced at more than $1, buy it. Chocolate is good; everyone needs chocolate.

My entire point through this all is that we should not be ashamed to splurge every once in a while, even though we think we ought not to. My friends, life is short. Therefore, if you believe buying an item is going to make you happy – but you’re struggling whether spending an extra few bucks is worth it – well, I am not in charge of your decision-making.

It’s simply up to you.

Putting meat on the campaign slogans THE WASHINGTON POST A lot has happened in the month since the Democratic presidential candidates last debated.

Brussels was rocked by terrorist attacks; the Justice Department unlocked the iPhone at the center of its legal dispute with Apple; Donald Trump, the GOP front-runner, questioned the importance of NATO; President Barack Obama visited Cuba and Argentina; frightening new projections of climate-change-induced sea-level rise were published.

Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton responded by reemphasizing national security and delivering a major speech on the subject at Stanford University late last month. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, largely stuck to his condemnations of Wall Street, income inequality and money in politics, and his proposals to create universal health care and education programs.

Consistency can be a virtue in politics, but so can understanding and responding to global events.

We are glad, then, that the Democratic candidates will debate on April 14, just five days before the New York primary, which both campaigns are treating as crucial. We hope Sanders will take the debate as an opportunity to explain in greater depth his vision for leading the country and interacting with the world.

After the Brussels attacks, Sanders declared that the Islamic State is “a barbaric organization” that “has to be destroyed,” and he emphasized that he would destroy it by creating “a very effective coalition of Muslim nations.” That’s not a new idea: How would he succeed where Obama has had minimal success? What would he do if that effective coalition failed to materialize – would destroying the Islamic State remain an essential goal? If so,

what role should the United States play?

Clinton, like Sanders, has ruled out a large commitment of U.S. ground forces, but her response to Brussels was more detailed and more plausible than Sanders’. She called for intensifying the air campaign, increasing support to local ground troops, creating “safe spaces” for displaced Syrians and paying attention to Islamic State outposts in places such as Libya.

Just as it would be useful to hear more details from Sanders on this agenda, voters would benefit from understanding what tradeoffs his health plan would entail, how he justifies his contention that the financial sector’s business model is “fraud,” and other specifics to back up his campaign slogans. Above all, if he is to be more than a protest candidate, he owes voters a richer understanding of his views on America’s role in the world.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

‘ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY’ Overstreet accepted into Interlochen Arts Camp

ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Sage Overstreet has always had a passion for music, but not even she could have imagined it would take her this far at such a young age.

Overstreet, 13, recently was accepted – and will attend – Interlochen Arts Camp this summer, a premier summer arts program for aspiring artists in grades three through 12.

She will study the clarinet during the three-week camp in Michigan – June 25 to July 16 – in both the Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony.

Currently a seventh-grader at Wredling Middle School in St. Charles, Overstreet is one of nearly 2,800 artists who will attend the camp.

Interlochen Arts Camp attracts students, faculty and staff from all 50 U.S. states, as well as 40 different countries around the world.

Though Overstreet will attend the camp to play and study the clarinet, she also plays the piano, saxophone and cello.

With the camp not too far out, Overstreet and her mother, Kim, spoke with Kane County Chronicle reporter Chris Casey about the camp, Sage’s excitement and her future in music. The following is an edited transcript.

Chris Casey: Sage, how did you find out about Interlochen Arts Camp and what did you have to do to apply?

Sage Overstreet: My band teacher at Wredling, [Michael Bazan], had told me a lot about it, and it seemed like a very similar camp that I went to in Blue Lake, Michigan. Anyone can go to that one, though, and this one we had to apply to. Not everyone gets accepted. I think the letter we got said there were around 2,800 artists going.

Kim Overstreet: In the audition process, Sage had to submit two different songs in different fields that she did on video.

Then there’s an application to fill out. A lot of the application, however, is audition-based.

Casey: Kim, when did you and your husband, Ken, know that Sage had a special gift for music?

Kim Overstreet: Sage has always been interested in music and learning new instruments. She was invited to join the honor’s band in sixth grade, something that’s usually more for seventh- and eighth-graders. So, we kind of knew she was on the right track at that point. She started private lessons, as well, and she really just spends so much time on her music outside of school.

Casey: Sage, do have an idea what you do at the camp? For instance, what a typical day there is like?

Sage Overstreet: I think the main thing is that they want us to get better and improve our musical skills. I’m assuming it’s going to be a lot of rehearsals. I think there’s separate lessons with just the clarinet players, too. I watched a video about Interlochen. There’s private lessons once a week, so there’s usually always something going on. There’s also some recreational time where you can enjoy activities. It’s like a very cool, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity because it’s not often that artists attend the camp more than once.

Casey: What are you looking forward to most about attending Interlochen?

Sage Overstreet: First, definitely improving my musical skills. I know the teachers and instructors there know so much about music and that could help me get better. But I also am excited to enjoy the camp experience and make new friends.

Really, I just want to have fun.

Casey: Kim, talk about how big of an opportunity you see this camp could be for Sage.

Kim Overstreet: It’s a big thing for her.

We really think it’s a great opportunity for Sage to get a better idea of the directions you can take music. We think she’ll see the different directions there are. There’s a ton of different avenues that music can take you, and she’s so young, you know. We’re just hoping this camp broadens her horizons and helps her figure out what she wants to do

down the road.

Casey: Sage, do you have an idea where you want music to take you?

Sage Overstreet: Like my mom said, I think after Interlochen, I may have a better idea. I definitely want to pursue music in some way, but I just don’t know what that way is yet.

Vollbrecht, Gentry plan to stay at South Dakota State despite coaching change

ccasey@shawmedia.com Loudon Vollbrecht thought the chance to play collegiate sports was gone.

After suffering a torn ACL in his left knee on the final play of Geneva’s football season, Vollbrecht was forced to miss his entire senior season of Vikings’ Cole Gentry basketball – a sport that was at the top of his list to play at the next level.

A 6-foot-8 center, Vollbrecht got a second chance when he accepted an offer to play basketball in November at NCAA Division-I South Dakota State.

The first obstacle is nearly cleared as Vollbrecht has resumed physical activity – running and lifting weights with his upper body – without pain for the first time in over four months since he underwent surgery.

Vollbrecht is in the process of dealing with a second obstacle after Jackrabbits head coach Scott Nagy resigned this week after 21 seasons and a school-record 410 wins.

Nagy will take over as head coach at Wright State, but Vollbrecht said that has yet to deter him from his college plans.

“As of now, I still plan on attending South Dakota State,” Vollbrecht said.

“Personally, I don’t hold anything against coach Nagy. He’s a great coach and made it to the NCAA tournament consistently. You have to realize sometimes that this is a business and that can mean doing what’s best for your family. I’m excited to see who the next coach is, but right now, I don’t have plans to go anywhere else.”

The Jackrabbits finished the 201516 season with a 26-8 record, winning the Summit League regular season title and conference tournament. They bowed out to Maryland, 79-74, in the first round of the NCAA tournament – Nagy’s third trip to the tournament with SDSU. “On behalf of Jackrabbit Nation, we want to thank Scott for an incredible and memorable run as head coach of our men’s basketball program,” SDSU athletic director Justin Sell said in a news release Monday. “Between win-

Jackrabbits guard Cole Gentry, a 2015 St. Charles East graduate who redshirted his freshman season, confirmed Wednesday that he has not considered leaving SDSU. Gentry got a first-hand look at what he hopes could be future NCAA tournament successes for the Jackrabbits.

“I think the best word was motivat-

ing,” he said of the Jackrabbits’ 2015-16 NCAA bid. “Seeing how good you have to be to win games there, and we were so close. It’s definitely going to help push us this offseason.”

Gentry also played an important role in Vollbrecht’s recruitment to South Dakota State. Friends in high school, the duo grew closer when Gentry practiced with Vollbrecht’s AAU team. Gentry said the friendship continued to grow, especially once he heard that SDSU has reached out to Vollbrecht during recruitment.

The two have exchanged text messages about the coaching situation this week, but Gentry wanted to reassure

Vollbrecht of the state of the program.

“We have talked a little since [coach Nagy] left and it was just about reassuring him,” Gentry said. “He wanted to know the mood of the guys and, honestly, with coach leaving, it’s probably made us stronger and closer as a team here. You can never really expect that kind of news, but no one wants to leave and we all continue to have that common goal of getting back to the NCAA tournament.”

Barring a change of heart, it seems that the one-time high school rivals will get to take the court as teammates before long.

Young goes from onlooker to attraction

kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Cougars left-hander Alex Young most frequently launches his pitches from the mound, whether it’s on the diamond or in one of the adjacent bullpens.

Young temporarily changed venues this week, playing prospective advertising executive for his new team while standing outside the clubhouse.

“I mean, if you didn’t want to go to Wrigley Field or anything like that, just come here,” Young said. “It was professional baseball still.”

A second-round pick of the parent Arizona Diamondbacks in 2015, Young attended a handful of Cougars games as a youngster from Hawthorn Woods. He since has sprouted in stature, and a stout, three-season run at Texas Christian actually leaves the Carmel product as an attraction, not an onlooker.

Young, 22, emerged from a Horned Frogs program with a penchant for producing big league talent. Cubs ace Jake Arrieta is a TCU alumnus, as is Cincinnati Reds lefty Brandon Finnegan, who famously pitched in the 2014 World Series with the Kansas City Royals just months after entering pro ball.

Young’s collegiate accomplishments include pitching in two College World Series. In 2015, he tied a single-game CWS record with 12 strikeouts against Vanderbilt, the eventual national runner-up.

The D’backs exercised caution with Young upon drafting him. After pitching 971/3 innings with TCU last spring, he logged just seven innings between Rookie League Arizona and Advanced-A Hillsboro, but success still followed. He scattered one run and five hits over seven appearances, striking out six while walking just one.

“I don’t think the big situations really bother him,” Cougars manager Mike Benjamin said. “I think he understands how to stay with his game plan, you know. His demeanor never changes. I think he understands all the little things that go along with pitching. The one thing that’s good is he’ll find a way to beat you. He might not have his best stuff, but he’ll find a way to beat you.”

Young gained a further complement to his arsenal when he met Cougars pitching coach Rich Sauveur, a fellow southpaw. Young never had worked with a left-handed pitching coach before, and he already has found a good rapport with Sauveur,

“He knows his stuff,” Young said.

“I mean, he’s been in the big leagues, Triple-A a long time. So yeah, it’s a good guy to have around.”

Young, the oldest of Erik and Karen Young’s six children, plans to live at home for as long as he’s with the Cougars. A piece of his developmental days still follows him; Young learned what he calls a knuckle curve from a friend in seventh grade, and he since has developed the pitch into his repertoire.

“Just kind of was messing around with it, and I’ve been throwing it ever since. So I guess it worked out,” Young said.

Young throws it in the upper 70s to low 80s, and is comfortable with using his off-speed pitches when he’s ahead in counts overall.

He’s looking forward to the built-in assurance of playing close to home.

Young had an inkling he would either begin the season with the Class-A

Cougars or Advanced-A Visalia (California), and wasted little time in giving his family the news.

“They were pumped,” he said “I just texted them, saying, ‘I’m coming home.’ ” Speed thrills: Outfielder Matt McPhearson stole 30 bases in 37 attempts in 56 games for Rookie League Missoula (Montana) last season. He boasts 68 steals in 81 attempts since joining the D’backs as fourth-round draft pick out of Riverdale Baptist School (Maryland) in 2013. That’s an 83.9 percent success rate.

“On the field, man, my mechanics, I just try to take the right angles,” McPhearson said. “When I get my lead off first base, just to get the right amount of feet off the base and having the right reaction time to get back to first base if they pick off. But when the pitcher lifts that front foot, just go off of anticipation and getting that jump and make sure you’re getting to second base safely. That’s pretty much it.”

Baseball America ranks McPhearson, 20, as the fastest baserunner

in the Arizona system. The 5-foot-8, 175-pounder credits his Baltimore upbringing for reinforcing that speed travels anywhere. McPhearson, in fact, feels he runs better in the cold.

“I don’t know. Just something about it,” he said. “I was raised in the cold weather, and I just got used to running in it. I’m more confident in it, and I just feel way better running in it.

So it’s cool.”

Et cetera: Third baseman Joe Munoz is suspended for the first two games of the season, stemming from his ejection in the Cougars’ season-ending loss in the 2015 Midwest League playoffs. … Right-hander Taylor Clarke, Arizona’s third-round selection in 2015 out of the College of Charleston, is slated to start today’s season opener against Clinton (Iowa) at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. … Benjamin on the opening day roster: “I think the pitching’s going to be by far the strong suit. Offensively, we have enough guys in there that are capable of doing their thing.

It’s just a matter of how many you get hot at one time.”

St. Francis senior Jonathan Burke was recently awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award for his exemplary volunteer service. The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama. Burke was recognized for his service to the community of Accra, in Ghana, Africa. Burke has visited the country seven time since 2011. While volunteering at the orphanage, he collected backpacks and school supplies, collected and donated more than 650 pairs of shoes, raised money to help fund the building of a nursery and organized soccer games and clinic for the children. “Over the past several years of visiting Ghana what has impacted me the most is the fact that these kids have nothing, but seem so happy,” Burke said. “I feel fortunate to continue to be influenced by all of the friends I have made there. They have inspired me to live life a different and more meaningful way.”

Serpa pursuing NFL dream Contact was frequent and nearly instantaneous for Blake Serpa as a defensive end.

Little has changed as he pursues a chance to play professional football.

After he capped a five-year career at Central Michigan with second team all-MAC honors in 2015, Serpa set out for New Orleans for the 2016 NFL regional combine March 13. Players are on display like a piece of steak behind a butcher shop’s glass case, as scouts examine seemingly every inch.

There’s a flurry of photographs taken, video recorded and statistics written down.

In the multibillion-dollar business of the NFL, the imagination of scouts is limitless. Players’ skills are examined thoroughly to determine which contributions a team can extract from the available talent pool.

Serpa, who helped lead Kaneland to the IHSA Class 5A semifinals and a 12-1 record as a senior in 2010, was an all-state tight end and defensive end that season. He had stats that looked as if they came from a videogame; 13 rushing touchdowns, seven receiving

A versatile athlete, Serpa said he will transition to linebacker and slimmed down to 246 pounds from his collegiate playing weight of 260 to 265 pounds. He hopes to sign with a team as a free agent and earn his way onto an NFL roster after rookie camp. The NFL Draft is set for April 28 to 30 in Chicago.

“Playing in the NFL was always a dream of mine,” Serpa said. “I had success at the high school level and continued on the last five years in college. There’s a point where it goes from being a dream that is seven to 10 years away to maybe I can do this. It’s surreal to think that I’ve reached that point in my career.”

As adjustments go, Serpa had plenty to make since the Chippewas wrapped up their 2015 season on Dec.

28 with a 21-14 loss to Minnesota in the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit. He said he envisioned NFL teams would consider him as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme.

Under the tutelage of former NFL wide receiver and Kaneland Hall of Famer Don Beebe, Serpa began a football makeover. He worked to improve his speed and agility. One team at the regional combine stressed that if he thought he could play inside linebacker, Serpa would have to move in multiple directions and make plays in open space.

The drills he’d done for five years as a defensive end would change, and in New Orleans he performed many of them for the first time in front of a very judgmental audience – one that could control his future employment.

“I was nervous at first,” said Serpa, who led CMU with three sacks and nine tackles for a loss in 2015. “I had my hand in the dirt as a defensive end for the last five years. There was an offensive lineman making contact with me immediately, and I came forward whether it was a run or pass

play. Now, I’ve got to transition back and forward and probably not receive contact on every play.”

At the Central Michigan pro day March 17, Serpa had a jolt of confidence after his performance in New Orleans. He did linebacker and defensive line drills for scouts in attendance. Whether he plays standing up – in a three- or four-point stance – on offense, defense or special teams, Serpa just wants a chance to contribute to an NFL team.

“At the combines, you can see not everyone there has a shot to play at the next level,” Serpa said. “There were about 100 players on defense, and at the end 10 to 15 of us were asked to stick around and chat with the coordinator running the drills. I was told I did well on the linebacker drills, which gave me a shot of confidence headed into my pro day.”

“I think we need to do a better job of communicating and play a little better team defense,” Cloy said. “We left guys open in the middle of the pool and they capitalized on it.”

The Chicago Steel teamed up with the Forest Preserve District of Kane County on Tuesday, helping to rid Batavia’s Dick Young Forest Preserve of invasive species. Players, host families and team staff joined Steel fans and forest preserve volunteers in a “Restoration Power Play” against buckthorn and honeysuckle, clearing non-native brush. In a statement, Steel president Dan Lehv called the endeavor an “opportunity to serve our new community working with our partners and neighbors at the Forest Preserve District.” The Steel will close the 2015-16 USHL regular season with three successive games, beginning with Friday’s 7:30 p.m. game against Muskegon (Michigan) at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

ST. CHARLES – Tenacious goaltending and effective power plays allowed the Metea Valley boys water polo team to slip past St. Charles North, 8-7, on Wednesday.

While Mustangs goalie Riley Byrne stopped 12 North shots, the Metea Valley offense took advantage of North Stars penalties, scoring four times while North was shorthanded.

North had three chances to force the match into overtime during the last two minutes of regulation but was unable to get off a shot.

“We were just trying to get a quality shot on the net,” North coach Chris Cloy said. “We put a lot of shots on net all day, but just were unable to find the back of it when we needed to.”

“We were kind of down in the gutter [at the end of the fourth quarter], and we were trying to regain our focus and we had trouble doing that,” said North Stars senior Jack Wil-

liams, who scored two goals.

The teams entered the last period tied at 5. Williams scored his second goal of the day at the 6:13 mark to put the North Stars up, 6-5. Mustang Cameron Gidlow responded 17 seconds later with his second goal to tie the game.

Senior Nathan Bawolek hit the back for the net for the fourth time with three minutes left to put the North Stars back on top, 7-6. Metea responded with two goals in less than a minute to retake the lead, 8-7, with 2:03 left on the clock. One came from Keegan Reilly (two goals) and the other was by James Gamilla.

Cloy called two timeouts to give his squad a better position when play resumed. On both occasions, the North Stars (3-8) were unable to find the net but regained the ball on Mustang turnovers.

Cloy called a third timeout with 22 seconds left to play to set up a final attempt. The North Stars, trying to find an open man, turned the ball over with 11 seconds to play.

Sleep promotes concentration and restores energy; it helps to keep your immune system functioning well and to regulate eating patterns.

The average adult needs seven to nine hours a night. Does it matter whether you get more or less than the ideal amount of sleep? That’s tough to answer – in part, because the effects of sleep are difficult to separate from other factors that can affect the quality or duration of your sleep.

Studies have linked short sleep duration – five hours or fewer each night – with a number of health problems, including high blood pressure and diabetes. Sleep deprivation also is a major contributor to car accidents, accounting for an estimated 100,000 accidents a year in this country.

Surprisingly, there also might be health problems associated with too much sleep.

Large, well-designed studies have analyzed the relationship between amount of sleep and length of life. Thousands of people have answered detailed questionnaires about their sleep habits and their health status over many years.

In these studies, the death rates for people who sleep the least – and the most – are higher than those people whose sleep time falls in the middle.

The reason isn’t clear. It’s possible a related factor might be responsible. Specifically, people with certain diseases and conditions may both sleep longer and die sooner. In other words, it might not be the

For example, people who sleep excessively might be drinking too much, and it could be the drinking that’s impairing their health. As another example, some people suffering from major depression sleep longer. Depression, in turn, is linked to heart disease and to suicide.

There are other common health problems that also cause people to sleep more and that may shorten life. These include: • thyroid disease; • kidney or liver disease; • a sleep disorder such as obstructive sleep apnea; • dementia.

Some medications used to treat serious illnesses also can make a person groggy and sleepy. That’s another way sleeping long hours might be linked to dying sooner.

In summary, I’d say there is little evidence that simply sleeping unusually long hours – such as more than nine hours a night – actually shortens your life. And there are plenty of healthy people who regularly sleep more than nine hours a night.

But if you asked your question because you’ve found yourself sleeping a lot more than you used to, check it out with your doctor. The long hours might not be hurting you, but they could be a sign of an underlying medical condition that could hurt you.

Dear Abby: I’m DEAR ABBY wondering how to approach a Jeanne situation followPhillips ing a visit with some relatives.

We enjoyed a wonderful visit, and they were very nice to put us up in their guest room. A few days into our stay, I woke up with strange and very itchy bites on my legs and shoulders.

When I mentioned it to our host, she quickly supplied me with some itch cream and changed the subject.

After we returned home, we met a few of our relatives, and they mentioned this particular household was experiencing a bed bug problem. I was shocked and a little hurt they didn’t mention the infestation or warn us ahead of time.

We’re in the process of making sure we didn’t bring any of these critters home, but if we must hire an exterminator or replace furniture, we will be in a bind financially.

What would be the proper way to address this, and should our host feel some responsibility for costs we might have to incur? – Itchy And

When North supports diamonds, which is game-forcing (no stopping on dimes), South, without a club stopper or honor-doubleton in spades, continues with three hearts.

North now knows that his singleton club is excellent. It is effectively a 34-point deck (10 points in each of three suits and 4 for the club ace). To make a small slam, you typically need 33 out of 40 points; using this ratio gives 28 out of 34. So, North uses (Roman Key Card) Blackwood and puts South into six diamonds.

West leads the club king, then shifts to his spade to dummy’s ace.

How should South continue?

Declarer should play a trump to his hand, ruff a club high on the board, draw trumps, and claim. He takes four spades, three hearts, four diamonds and the club ruff.

2 What to do when your yard may be a haven for Zika virus-carrying mosquitoes

The appearance of the Zika virus in our hemisphere, with all its attendant worries for expectant parents, casts a new and darker light on the presence of the Asian tiger mosquito. This ubiquitous pest of mid-Atlantic gardens is closely related to the mosquito spreading the disease in Brazil (Aedes aegypti), and the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) has been known to spread the disease in Africa.

The tiger mosquito in the age of Zika has prompted readers to wonder about garden features that might prove a haven for the mosquito. As a so-called container mosquito, it has evolved to reproduce in the smallest amounts of collected water, even in bottle caps.

Thus, the species has found a nirvana amid the detritus of the human landscape, where so many people seem clueless as to how other animals live. It is no wonder that the tiger mosquito has spread across much of the United States since it arrived from Japan in the 1980s.

This is how the insect works: The mated female adult needs the protein of a blood meal for egg development.

She then lays her eggs in standing water, they hatch into larvae that develop and turn into a pupa before emerging

as a winged adult. The whole process can take little more than seven days.

Some potential breeding grounds are obvious – old tires, buckets and abandoned swimming pools – but with this sneaky pest, others are not as apparent: Corrugated PVC drainage pipe, a clogged gutter, a soda can buried in a rug of ivy, even folds in the tarp over the woodpile.

Folks who are aware of the problem are keen to minimize potential breeding sites before the mosquito begins to appear in May, but they have questions about how to deal with some common garden elements that could cause problems. Best to deal with three landscape elements in particular:

Fish ponds

Mosquitoes prefer to lay eggs in stagnant and shallow water, so ponds that are deeper and with a robust filtration and circulation system are better placed against the pest. But the best way to rid your pond of mosquitoes is to stock it with fish; they spend their whole day looking for food, and that wriggling mosquito larva presents the perfect snack.

I have had a fish pond for more than 20 years and never had a problem with mosquito larvae. I first stocked the pond with hardy goldfish and about six years ago added mosquito

fish. The latter are smaller, growing to just 3 inches or so, are dark, almost black, and reach every nook and cranny in the pond. Both have proven winter hardy for me – all they need is a hole in the ice, which can be achieved with a floating heating element. I threw in five mosquito fish, which increased naturally to several dozen. If your local aquatic pond store or garden center doesn’t have them, common goldfish work just as well.

Even mosquito fish may not be able to pierce a mat of algae, so it’s important to keep on top of algae growth, which is a problem in early spring as the water warms. You clean up string algae by scooping it out and adding a fish-safe algaecide to the water (available at pet/ pond stores). You prevent it by growing aquatic plants that will cover much of the surface of the pond and rob the algae of the light and nutrients it needs.

Rain barrels

The popularity of rain gardens, in which storm water is captured before it enters the municipal storm sewer, has led to the parallel interest in rain barrels to capture water coming off roofs (we called them water butts where I come from). These barrels can become prime breeding sites for mosquitoes if you’re not careful. The

slightest opening between downspout and barrel should be well screened.

“I’ve seen some with not-good screening and [mosquitoes] breed like mad,” Jeannine M. Dorothy, an entomologist with the Maryland Department of Agriculture, wrote via email.

If you have a rain barrel, you should also use mosquito dunks containing a biological larvacide named Bt. One method of thwarting mosquitoes is to put a few drops of mineral oil or detergent on the water to break the surface tension they need to hatch. These “would not work so well and would need constant re-application, which homeowners are not likely to do,” she wrote. So screen the barrel, add a dunk and use the water for your garden.

It’s so much fun to see birds playing in and around these shallow basins, but you cannot neglect them. Even if we lived without mosquitoes, you should replace the water every two to three days for the sake of the birds. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology: “To provide a safe drinking and bathing environment, it’s important to change the water every day or two.” Good advice. If you are away from home for more than a week, you should flip the basin over to prevent rainwater accumulation.

Even without the threat of Zika, mosquitoes are irritating in so many ways.

Special to The Washington Post Design quizzes, smartphone selfies, inspiration boards and apps are the modern trappings of online interior designers who are renovating the process of how style comes home.

The concept: a virtual service that democratizes home decorating and beautifies the world, one middle-class living room at a time.

“Most people have had to be their own interior designer because they couldn’t afford to hire one,” said Gretchen Hansen, founder and chief executive of Decorist, a San Francisco-based online design company. Not anymore.

Here’s how it works: Choose a package of services from one of several cyber-savvy design companies. Average prices range from $200 to $700 (although one “mini package” from e-decorator Havenly rings in at $79).

Lizzie Lipman, owner of e-decorating service Homegrown Interiors in Los Angeles, said clients don’t mind a little legwork.

“Clients who sign up for e-decorating are totally OK with placing the orders and accepting deliveries and putting everything together themselves. They just don’t know what to order or how to create a space plan,” she said.

The process, said Megan Shannon, owner of Megan Blake Design in Alexandria, Va., is fun, flexible and doesn’t need to fit into a busy daytime schedule – for the consumer or the designer. “It can be done at night, after work, school or kids’ bedtimes,” Shannon said.

“The majority of traditional interior design is project management,” Fine said. “It’s measuring, meeting with contractors, overseeing deliveries and installs. There’s no reason for the design work to be done in person.”

To prove this point, Hansen and her team at Decorist partnered with Seattle-based Porch, an online directory of home maintenance and repair specialists, to create a virtual showcase house in January.

“It was 100 percent virtually designed,” Hansen said. “We did the design, ATGStores.com provided the furniture and Porch.com provided the installation.”

“I do think the future of interior design is digital,” Fine said. In fact, she thinks there’s potential for augmented-reality applications in the design world. “I think it’s something that is going to be very powerful for the industry. I think design will be happening through virtual reality very shortly.”

Home inspections are helpful for home buyers who hope their dream home has no major flaws. A house is like a car: It needs ongoing maintenance, and some parts have a limited life span. Inspectors often point out minor issues, but buyers and inspectors should especially look out for red-flag problems.

Below are a few things to look for.

• Plumbing: Because plumbing is installed within the walls of a house, faulty pipes can lead to larger issues.

Home buyers should especially look out for polybutylene pipes, which are no longer installed in homes because they leak and cause property damage.

If the inspector finds such pipes, pay attention to the advice and plan on replacing them as soon as possible.

• Home flipping: If the home you’re considering was recently flipped, make sure corners weren’t cut. Seller disclosure laws are not an absolute protection against this because in certain states sellers can fill out a disclaimer form instead of a disclosure. Although sellers can’t legally hide known defects, a home inspection may uncover issues not in the seller’s paperwork and problems the sellers may not know exist.

• Electrical systems: Pay attention to

the inspector on electrical issues – except for one, reverse polarity. Reverse polarity is a common issue but is simple and inexpensive to fix.

Modern two-prong electrical plugs have one prong that is larger than the other so it receives positive electricity from one side and negative electricity on the other. In reverse polarity, the home inspector may find some of the outlets have wires swapped. After you move in, if you have an electrician replace a chandelier or install a ceiling fan, ask them to take care of the outlets then.

• Windows: Windows should keep dampness out, help keep heat and air conditioning in and the condition can have a significant impact on utility costs. Foggy windows can be a sign the seal has broken and that they’re not functioning properly. In some cases, this is easy to repair. In others, they may need to be replaced.
