asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – With Charleston on the River’s grand-opening weekend almost behind him, Marwan Taib said Sunday he has a hunch about his new downtown St. Charles restaurant – it’s going to become fun.

The ingredients are there, he said, adding that all it needs is the community’s support.

If the grand opening is any indication, Charleston on the River has the beginnings of a fan base. Multiple fivestar reviews have been left on the eatery’s Facebook page, and other positive feedback has popped up elsewhere on the social media site.

One night, Taib said, the place was so crowded that “you could barely walk.”

Taib said he opened Charleston on the River, 1 W. Illinois St., on the success of his first restaurant in St. Charles, the Spotted Fox Ale House on the city’s east side.

“This town embraced us from the beginning,” he said.

While the Spotted Fox specializes in craft beer and sports, Taib said, Charleston on the River aims to create an ambiance leveraging its Fox River views along with live entertainment on certain nights and quality food at a reasonable price.

“You get a river view from almost every seat,” Taib said.

The menu includes salads, burgers, sandwiches and seafood entrées, as well as pasta and steak dishes. Popular items include the seared salmon, the

Brunch is available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and the lunch menu is available daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. By May, diners should be able to eat on the riverfront patio, Taib said, noting plans to install an outdoor bar, lounge furniture and two fire tables.

The anticipated renovations outside are complemented by changes inside, which include a modified layout, new furniture and the addition of 12 TVs. What does Taib think about the realization of his vision?

ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles spa’s request for a massage establishment license elicited concern Monday in light of last week’s arrests at three massage businesses.

First Ward Alderman Ron Silkaitis referenced the arrests – which resulted in charges of prostitution and practicing massage without a license – as the St. Charles Government Operations Committee considered a massage license application from Elizabeth Feltes, owner of Le Visage Spa. He asked her how she would prevent that situation from happening at her business.

“I have my concerns,” Silkaitis said. “When these businesses hire people without a license, that concerns me.”

Police Chief James Keegan answered. “We hold the businesses accountable,” he said.

The city in 2014 revised the St. Charles Municipal Code so that mas-

sage parlor licensees are held responsible for violations. At the time, the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission – which oversees the massage licenses – expressed hope that the regulation would give local massage parlors credibility after three prostitution arrests earlier that year.

“We’re doing this to protect you,” 2nd Ward Alderman Rita Payleitner told Feltes.

The police department conducts a due diligence process on each applicant and, after a license is issued, conducts license inspections and compliance checks, Keegan said.

Of Feltes, Keegan said he was “very impressed with her business model.”

Payleitner said the massages complement other services at Le Visage Spa, 475 Dunham Road, Suite 2A, St. Charles.

According to its website, the spa provides facials, body treatments and waxing.

The committee forwarded Feltes’ application to the City Council with a favorable recommendation.

‘PRESERVATION, EDUCATION Group aims to raise awareness AND PATRIOTISM’ of Camp Kane in St. Charles

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Retired history teacher Bob Johnson knows that, for many people, the land in St. Charles along Riverside Avenue near Devereaux Way is known as a sledding hill or Langum Park.

But, he said, there’s much more to it.

“To us, this is hallowed ground,” said Johnson, a Batavia resident and president of the 8th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry.

The land once belonged to Col. John F. Farnsworth, who used it to develop Camp Kane, the Civil War training camp that was home to the 8th Illinois and 17th Illinois cavalries. It was designated as a local city landmark last year.

The Camp Kane Heritage Foundation has created an eight-phase campus plan for Camp Kane. Memorials and statues are included in the plans, as are the construction of the Farnsworth Underground Railroad, Civil War Discovery Center and an education center.

“We really do hope the community will turn out and support the project,” foundation President Kim Malay said.

She acknowledged the project is unlike any other she’s aware of and said its uniqueness might make it difficult for people to grasp. But, she said, it could become a statewide attraction, as it is one of four Civil War training camps that were in Illinois.

In addition to applying for grants, the foundation is fundraising through a GoFundMe effort, which has raised $160 of the $20,000 goal.

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina was among the contributors. He said he is appreciative of those who see the opportunity to preserve a site that not only has historical importance but also tourism potential.

“I made a donation and hope the citizenry can go to the site and do the same because it will be an asset to the community,” he said.

The Dionne quintuplets were born on May 28, 1934, and were the first set of quintuplets to survive. Mr. Peanut is a trademark for Planters Peanuts that has been in use for 100 years. Amedeo Obici and Mario Peruzzi (who later became his brother-in law) started the Planters Nut and Chocolate Co. in 1906 in Pennsylvania. They made Burgomaster Brand Salted Peanuts sold in bags, a new idea.

Soon the nuts also were sold in tin cans and glass jars. The company recognized the need for advertising and branding. In 1916, it ran a contest for a trademark and Anthony Gentile, a 10-yearold boy, won with the sketch of a smiling peanut with arms and legs. It was later improved by an artist, and from 1913 to 1961, Mr. Peanut was dressed with a top hat, white spats, black arms and legs, gloves, shoes, an ebony cane and a monocle. For a few years during World War II, he carried a gun and looked like a soldier in a hard helmet. The company still uses Mr. Peanut as a mascot, giveaway and advertising symbol. Figurines, tall drug store scales shaped like Mr. Peanut, costumes, books, dishes, glass jars, toys, charms, puzzles, textiles, salt and pepper shakers, silverware, even a sleeping bag, and games were made. Today there is a club called Peanut Pals.

Mr. Peanut finally changed his clothes in a 2010 update. He now is seen in ads and commercials with an added white shirt, gloves, a black tie, vest, and black legs

or pants. One of the biggest Mr. Peanuts collectibles is a 1940s costume. The wearer’s legs and arms poke out the sides of the composition peanut body that fits on the person’s body. The person inside has to wear black sleeves, tights, shoes and socks that will show. Mr. Peanut’s body has holes for eyes, a nose, mouth and ears to let the person breath and talk. The head and top hat are taller than the body, making an almost six-foot figure. *** Q: A friend has 10 Hans Wegner dining room chairs, eight side chairs and two armchairs. They were bought in Denmark in the early 1960s. They are wood with leather seats and backs. There is some cracking of the leather.

A: Hans Wegner (1914-2007) was a Danish furniture designer best known for his innovative chair designs. He designed over 500 different chairs, as well as hundreds of beds, desks, tables and lighting. Leather chairs should be kept out of the sun, away from heat, and in a room with enough humidity to keep the leather from drying out. Leather should be dusted regularly and can be cleaned with a special leather cleaner or by wiping with a damp cloth and soapy water. If the chair is unusable in its present condition, your friend should have a professional replace the leather. As long as a professional restoration is done using real leather, it will not lower the value

Geneva votes to advance TIF in spite of objection

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva aldermen supported a resolution Monday to propose a third tax increment finance district and redevelopment project area, despite being asked by Geneva School District 304 officials to delay their action.

Aldermen voted, 9-1, with 1st Ward Alderman Tara Burghart voting “no.”

The issue will advance to a public hearing May 16, officials said.

The Committee of the Whole last week recommended designating a 98acre parcel as the Geneva Fox River Redevelopment Project Area, covering commercial and residential properties and open space along the river.

A tax increment finance district is a tool municipalities use to stimulate development by diverting the increased assessed value of property and sales taxes to redevelopment. A TIF area can be used in areas that are blighted or with excessive vacancies.

But school district attorney Rick

Petesch said the resolution contains “several misstatements of law and fact that must be reconsidered before the city should move forward.”

Private enterprise already has been active in the redevelopment area, Petesch said.

Petesch said that “excessive vacancies” were determined by square footage, rather than by parcels. Petesch said using the square footage of the large Mill Race Inn parcel inflated the vacancies in the proposed redevelopment area.

“TIF is the wrong vehicle for the city to use as incentive for areas that would developed,” Petesch said. “TIF has a detrimental effect on the district. ... I am urging the council not to approve this resolution.”

City officials said the objections should be addressed during the TIF public hearing process.

Burghart, who voted in favor of the TIF at Committee of the Whole last week, said she regretted that vote.

“This is prime riverfront property,” Burghart said. “It will be developed.”

Helen L. Nottingham, 88, of Batavia, formerly of West Chicago, died March 20, 2016.

She was born Jan. 29, 1928, in West Chicago, the fourth daughter of Erik G. and Magda C. (nee Carlson) Anderson.

Helen has been a resident of Batavia since 1948. She married Warren Nottingham at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Batavia on Jan. 29, 1949. Helen was employed as an accountant at The Campana Corp. for 33 years and DuPage Airport Authority for 17 years prior to her retirement. She is also a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews; and also a special cousin, Larry (Janice) Butler of Effingham, IL. Preceded in death by her husband, Warren Nottingham; her parents; and three sisters, Florence Schultz, Doris Ferguson and Edna Haderly.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at Bethany Lutheran Church, 8 S. Lincoln St., Batavia, IL. Funeral Services will immediately follow visitation at Bethany Lutheran Church at 11 a.m.; the Rev. Steven Srock will officiate.

Survivors include her children, Matthew (Amy), Burke and Andrew (Lucy); four grandchildren, Hannah, Hunter, Luna and Andrew Ross; a brother, C. James (Diane) Maize; a brother-in-law, Robert Ricks; a nephew, Byron (Maren); a niece, Heidi; and her faithful companion, Harley.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Kenneth “Ross” Ricks, on April 11, 2011, whom she married Dec. 26, 1964.

Patty loved garage sales, rooting for the

underdog and spending time with her grandchildren. She was always welcoming to others.

After Ross’ passing, she stayed active at church as a member of the Funeral Committee and went to the theater and shopping monthly with her friends. From 1972 to 2014, she was a member of the St. Charles Bridge Club.

Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, March 28, 2016, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Elgin. Burial will be private. Visitation will be on Saturday, March 26, 2016, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, and on Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass.

Police: Uber driver is attacked in St. Charles

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – An Uber driver sought refuge at a St. Charles gas station Sunday night after his passenger attacked him while driving and, once parked, threatened him with a knife, police said.

St. Charles Deputy Police Chief Dave Kintz said the incident began about 10:37 p.m., when the 54-year-old Uber driver picked up St. Charles resident Tyler Royer, 26, in Campton Hills.

Tyler Royer The driver was relying on Royer to direct him to the destination, but Royer passed out, Kintz said.

When the driver began speaking loudly to get Royer’s attention, Royer became enraged and started attacking the driver while he was driving, Kintz said. He said Royer reached around the headrest with both hands and grabbed the driver’s face, causing him to almost veer

off the road at 45 mph in the area of Peck Road and Route 64 in western St. Charles.

Kintz said Royer was also punching and kicking the car’s interior.

The driver pulled into a gas station at Randall Road and Route 64, Kintz said, adding that the driver tried to get Royer out of the car.

“As he’s doing this, Royer has pulled a knife on him,” Kintz said, describing the knife as about 4 inches long.

Royer lunged at the driver with the weapon, and the driver took refuge inside the gas station, telling the employee to call 911, Kintz said. As police arrived, Royer took off running and threw the knife into a nearby retention pond before officers took him into custody, Kintz said.

Royer, of the 1600 block of Avalon Court, St. Charles, was charged with aggravated assault, reckless conduct and two counts of battery, Kintz said, noting each of the charges is a misdemeanor.

The driver had minor redness but did not suffer any serious injuries, Kintz said.

Let’s now think of the opportunities being created with the newly formed West Town TIF District.

This district is a 27-acre neighborhood, centered at the intersection of Main Street and South Harrison Street. By creating a TIF district, the city may offer private property owners financial assistance as an incentive to invest in their properties, with the intent of addressing stagnant or declining land values.

Basically, they want the area to look nicer, be more functional and increase property values along the way. This is a win for the city, property owners in the area and bordering neighborhoods as well.

This is another creative way to encourage growth.

As for Batavia Chamber of Commerce membership, we are at a five-year high with 314 members. The growth has been experienced through new businesses moving to Batavia and wanting to join us, but also in fewer businesses closing. Not that our membership numbers are directly tied to economic development, but it does indicate a positive movement in business growth. Keep an eye out for the big ribbon-cutting scissors!

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles residents have a new way to pay their utility bills.

According to a news release, the city is offering automatic bill payment to its residential utility customers.

Auto pay customers will get a monthly bill showing the amount to be withdrawn automatically, and the withdrawal will take place on the due date shown, the release states.

Visit www.stcharlesil.gov/ubills/enroll to enroll. The site offers an online form as well as a downloadable form that may be mailed to the City of St. Charles Utility Billing Office, 2 E. Main St., St. Charles, IL 60174. A preprinted, voided check should be included with the enrollment form, the release states.

Utility billing should be contacted at least five business days before the scheduled withdrawal date if there are questions about utility bill amounts, the release states. It noted that bank notifications regarding an invalid automatic withdrawal will be treated as a check returned unpaid by a bank.

Over the past month, I have had the opportunity to meet with many business owners and, as usual, there is a common thread.

This time, it is growth. Whether it is growing pains, business success or frustration with the lack of it, growth is on everyone’s minds.

U.S. Congress is forgotten, but it isn’t gone

Remember that first branch of American government?

With all the attention to the presidential race and the partisan fight over President Barack Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court, Congress seems an afterthought.

The legislative branch isn’t a pretty picture. In the House, the rightwing caucus is stymying Speaker Paul Ryan’s plan to pass a budget. In the Senate, where the only priority of Republicans is to retain their imperiled majority, lawmakers are scrambling to come up with small measures to put on the April and May schedule.

Yet a few substantive items might be enacted, such as parts of a bipartisan reform of the criminal justice system. And both sides will try to posture for maximum political advantage in the November elections.

Moreover, Congress is teeing up big stuff for a certain post-election lame-duck session, possibly including the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Garland nomination.

In the regular session, the pressure will be on the Republican majority, whose members already are nervous about the prospect of Donald Trump winning the presidential nomination.

The battle over a budget is more symbolic because the spending levels were set last year in a deal between the president and the Republican Congress.

But Ryan, the new speaker, who has criticized Democrats for failing to pass a budget, feels his credibility is on the line. The right-wing Freedom Caucus, which pressured the previous speaker to resign last year, forced Ryan to pull the measure for now.

Even if the speaker revives it next month, it may die in the Senate.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell

doesn’t want to deal with the budget, or any other controversial issue that could further complicate the re-election bids of more than a half-dozen embattled senators who fear they’re running in an inhospitable environment.

Republicans now control the Senate, 54 seats to 46; if Democrats retain the White House, a loss of four seats would switch control.

McConnell’s delicate juggling act – the elections, Trump and disgruntled conservatives – explains the party’s refusal to even hold hearings on Garland. They are losing that fight with the public, but any vote on Obama’s pick to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, the conservative icon who died in February, would cause more tensions within the party.

The congressional Republican strategy for the next six months will be a variation of the old Muhammad Ali rope-a-dope, papering over the schisms within the party.

The minority Democrats have their own split: between the liberal passion of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ grassroots movement and the pragmatic realpolitik of Hillary Clinton, the likely nominee. The plan is to offer measures on appropriations bills that both Democratic camps support – raising the minimum wage, pay equity for women and paid parental leave – that will never be accepted by the House.

Thus there’s much private focus on a lame-duck session, which is common after the presidential elections are won by the rival party; it occurred in 1980, 2000 and 2008, and there were some substantive achievements.

If Trump, or Sen. Ted Cruz, wins the presidency, it would be hard to imagine much movement. With Clinton, it could be different.

Credit those program bests to Frazier’s humble work ethic, but at least award an assist to one persistent mom.

Reflecting on her final prep season and ultimately her career, Frazier, the Kane County Chronicle Girls Basketball Player of the Year, remembers how her mother, Erin, pushed her into park district basketball less than a decade before her senior year.

“My mom made me,” Frazier laughs. “I don’t want to go at all, and

I’m certainly glad she did. I loved it.”

Make no mistake, the Batavia community also relished the development.

As a sophomore, Frazier helped the Bulldogs to their first IHSA regional title since 1990, a feat Batavia accomplished again this season behind Frazier’s team-high averages of 22.3 points and 8.9 rebounds a game.

Meadows leads ‘extremely unselfish’ Vikings

Still, Kane County Chronicle Girls Basketball Coach of the Year Sarah Meadows remained adamant the Vikings couldn’t have achieved their latest Sarah run of excellence with- Meadows out their seniors.

Forward Taylor Williams eventually earned a starting nod behind her leadership and defensive grit, but reserves such as Colleen Grady and Sarah Baurer helped maintain a longstanding work ethic that was at the

core of Geneva’s 25-win season, which included its eighth-straight regional title.

“Our seniors are a group of extremely unselfish, huge character kids,” Meadows said. “I mean, it’s tough to be a senior and not play a lot, you know. So that just speaks volumes for them. They don’t complain. They come to practice every day and do exactly what they’re asked to do and more. And they’re team players. They are high-integrity kids. Solid kids.”

Geneva shared the Upstate Eight Conference River Division title with Batavia, splitting the rivals’ pair of regular season meetings. The Vikings snapped the season series tie with a thrilling, 48-44 overtime victory against the Bulldogs in an IHSA Class 4A Schaumburg Sectional semifinal.

The rest of the UEC River and region shouldn’t doubt that. It isn’t simply the personnel that returns next season – including multi-year starters Grace Loberg, Margaret Whitley and Stephanie Hart – but a mindset and moxie that has thrived for almost a decade.

Defensive pressure plus offensive execution equals success at Geneva, to be sure.

“We always are blessed with girls who believe in each other and want to work,” Meadows said, “year in and year out. The kids are great on the court and off the court, and that’s really where it starts.”

son, St. Charles North coach Sean Masoncup took to branding the Vikings “a factory” for their sustained success in the UEC River and Class 4A postseason.

Geneva defeated North for a third time to win the Glenbard West Regional championship before encountering Batavia for a third time in the next playoff round.

“It’ll probably sting until we start next year,” Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen said. “It’ll sting, but that sting surely does not take away how pleased I am for how things went this season.”

Meadows sounded a similar refrain when the Vikings fell to Montini, a perennial Class 3A power which climbed to 4A in 2015-16.

Although she uttered the words anyway, Meadows already knew what many outside the program did.

The Vikings would be back.

Of course she should. The Billikens, who hosted Ball State in a WNIT second-round game Monday, entered the night with a school-record 25 wins after sharing the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season title.

Although SLU starts just two seniors, one lineup opening will come in the frontcourt, where Frazier’s versatility figures to make her a long-term boon. Once leery to let fly with what Jensen called “a nice little shot” from the outside, Frazier continued adding long and midrange jumpers to her offensive repertoire. Her eye-popping, 56 percent success rate from the field wasn’t simply a result of putbacks and smooth moves to the basket.

“It’s something I wouldn’t have even considered before, taking an outside shot,” Frazier said. “I’ve just become more confident and was looking to take them more.”

Batavia’s own emergence helped fuel that surge. During Frazier’s freshman season, the program fielded a roster of just eight players, leaving Jensen to occasionally recruit a handful of players from his time in the boys program to help as passers, pressers or scrimmage opponents during practices.

This season, 16 Bulldogs contributed, with Jessica Koch (6.0), Hailey Orman (4.7), Elena Cabrera (4.5), Geddy Rerko (3.8) and Shea Bayram (3.7) among those providing balance to augment Frazier’s impact on the scoring column.

Batavia girls basketball coach That support allowed Frazier to focus on rebounding, defense or getting to the free-throw line – she converted 195 of 243 attempts (80 percent) this season – as the situation dictated.

“She became a little more of that alpha dog that we needed, even if that might have been outside of her comfort zone,” Jensen said.

Bayram, a longtime Frazier friend who could even tell you about her prolific developmental volleyball skills, notes that Frazier’s reticence to talk about herself should not be confused with bashfulness.

“At first, I would say anyone is shy,” Bayram said. “It took awhile for her to open up to everyone. Once she opens up to you, she is an exciting, upbeat person that is always there for you and never really keeps to herself.”

Admittedly “always in the back of the class picture” growing up because of her height, Frazier accelerated to a much more prominent place in Bulldogs program history.

True to form, she downplays that reality, talking more about the past then her present and future.

It should be awhile before Batavia stops grinning about all three.

Hawks take positives from ‘tremendous’ season Despite Game 3 loss, overall success satisfying

ccasey@shawmedia.com BENSENVILLE – The Fox Valley Hawks weren’t ready for it to end.

A season that saw them win the Illinois Suburban Hockey League regular season title had one game remaining Saturday in Game 3 of the ISHL Cougar Cup finals at The Edge Ice Arena.

The Hawks were as persistent as they could possibly be but could not solve DuPage Stars goaltender Patrick O’Connor, who stopped all 31 shots he faced in a 2-0 shutout of the Hawks.

“Nobody played bad. It was a fantastic game to decide a final,” Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen said. “They had a couple bounces go their way and we didn’t. They deserve credit for finding a way to get a couple in the back of the net, but both teams played a tremendous game on both sides of the ice. It’s tough because someone has to win and

someone has to lose and unfortunately that was us today.”

One tough bounce on a harmless shot from the point by Stars captain Josh Smith and a dazzling coast-tocast move by Levi Bollnow resulted in the two goals that beat Hawks goaltender Aaron Karkos (Batavia) despite one of his stronger performances of the season.

The loss was hard to look past Saturday, as Hawks captain Trevor Kurtzhals (St. Charles North) wanted to be the one to hoist the championship trophy for his team. However, the senior forward knows his team will be able to view this season as more than successful in the coming days.

“It’s been an awesome season,” Kurtzhals said. “I’m not sure of the exact record we finished with, but it was definitely a great year. We got to experience some playoff hockey, made it to the championship here, and I couldn’t have asked for much more. We have a great group of guys here that gave everything they had, and I’m proud to call them my teammates.”

The Hawks (26-10-4), who scored eight goals in Game 1 of the Cougar Cup finals against O’Connor, had a difficult time developing an offensive rhythm. When they created chances, O’Connor shut the door.

His 31 saves certainly seemed to overshadow a number of big saves from Karkos, who stopped 24 of 26 shots he faced. A few chances from the Stars that Karkos denied kept the game within reach for the Hawks for much of Saturday afternoon.

“Both goalies were fantastic,” Gabrielsen said. “Man, was Aaron good tonight. He was great and had one of his better games of the season. It’s tough for him to get a loss after playing the way he did. It wasn’t him or anyone else tonight. There’s no one to blame for the loss. It just happens.”

Though the teams combined to score 21 goals in the series’ first two games, they came in expecting Saturday afternoon’s deciding game to be much tighter, especially on the defensive end.

“You could tell right away that

both teams were tightening things up,” Karkos said. “They played great and so did we. It’s never easy to lose, especially when you get this far, but we have a lot to be proud of. I know it’s hard to see it today, here and now, but we had such a great season.”

The frustration may have been tough to look past on Saturday, especially not being able to celebrate a goal or a Cougar Cup championship together, but Gabrielsen said he believes this team still has quite a bit to be proud of.

After a long, hard-fought season, the Hawks were still playing hockey during a time where very few teams remained.

“We were still playing hockey on March 19,” Gabrielsen said. “This program has come such a long way and these boys have a large part in that.

There’s nothing I can say right now that will make them feel better about today. They are competitors, and they wanted to win this one, but all in all, what a tremendous season from a tremendous group of kids.”

Batavia girls track repeats as UEC indoor champs KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE

BATAVIA – It was bad enough that Batavia runner Tori Ortiz was disqualified for colliding with an opponent in the 400-meter dash at Saturday’s Upstate Eight Conference indoor girls track and field meet.

To add insult to injury, West Aurora runners placed first and second in the event to take over first place, one point ahead of the Bulldogs with three races left.

Ortiz used that mishap as an added incentive to win the 200-meter dash, the next-to-last event of the day, that clinched first place for Batavia.

The Bulldogs repeated as UEC champions with 118.5 points to West Aurora’s 108.5. Geneva, St. Charles North and St Charles East came in third, fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the 12-team field, separated by 2.5 points.

“The team set a high bar and then they surpassed it. The 4x800 (relay) was phenomenal, starting off the running events with the victory,” Batavia coach Justin Allison said. “We had phenomenal events across the board.

“I know Batavia and West Aurora are some top programs, so just to be in the competitive mix with them is very exciting,” Geneva coach Peter Raak said.

in these younger girls. It’s a shame we scored 10 in that first game, I think some of them thought the goals would fall in that easy today, but that’s not realistic.”

The shots may not have fallen against the Buccaneers (1-1) quite as often, but the Knights (2-0) got enough, including one from Powell on a header just 26 seconds into the second half, pushing the lead to 2-0. Kylie Kurz assisted on the goal.

“That was definitely a key part for

the start of the second half,” Powell said. “That just put us in gear to start going and pressure more. It kicked us off good.”

The Knights scored in the 13th minute when Lauren Ortiz fed the ball ahead to Powell, who knocked it past Belvidere North goalkeeper Maria Aguilar – who faced 21 shots on the day.

3D printers have role in medicine Dear Dr. K: It seems like the latest “hot” new electronics technology is 3D printers.

Do they have any role in medicine?

Dear Reader: 3D printers already are starting to be used in medicine, and I think we’ll be seeing a lot more of them.

These printers are directed by computers to build three-dimensional structures. Designs for the structures are entered into a computer. The computer communicates the shape of the structure to the 3D printer. Then the printer sprays liquid plastic (which later hardens) in the shape of the structure directed by the computer.

How could this be useful in medicine?

In 2014, a hospital in Utrecht, Netherlands, was treating a 22-year-old woman with a rare bone disease. The disease made her skull keep growing thicker. As it grew, it was pressing down on the brain below it, causing severe headaches and reducing her eyesight. If nothing was done, the consequences would be far worse.

Clearly, the thickened areas of her skull had to be removed. That was not a technical challenge. Brain surgeons cut into skull bones as part of doing brain surgery. The challenge was: What do you replace the skull with? You have to replace it; the brain is as soft as jelly, and a lot more precious. If you take away the bony cap, you’ve got to replace it with something hard and that fits.

From pictures of the woman’s skull and brain, the doctors used a 3D printer to make a hard plastic skull that was shaped just right. They performed the delicate surgery, removing the thickened bone and replacing it with a much thinner and very strong plastic skull.

The patient’s headaches went away and her vision returned to normal. The surgeons say when you look at her, you

Here’s another example. Some children, because of birth defects or terrible injuries, don’t have functioning hands.

Conventional technologies can create artificial hands the children can learn to control, but they are very expensive.

Moreover, children grow – and keep outgrowing their artificial hands. So children need a series of expensive hands until they reach adulthood.

Already, 3D printers are being used to create such artificial hands, at much less expense. One example was reported in the Wilmington, Delaware, News Journal in 2015. Colin Consavage, a 10-year-old boy, was born with a shrunken hand, locked in a fist. He couldn’t use it.

Colin heard about 3D printers and found a website for a global community dedicated to using 3D printers to create artificial hands, called e-NABLE. Colin now has a hand. The first thing he did with it was pick up a can of potato chips – something he had never been able to do before. He even recently won an arm wrestling contest with it.

Colin has a hand because of the research that made 3D printing possible, and because of his imagination and initiative in seeing how it could help him. And he won the arm wrestling contest because he is one tough dude.

What helped me to stop cutting wasn’t counseling or medication. The biggest mistake my parents and friends made when I was really destructive was forcing me to commit to ultimatums. It turned my cutting into a shameful thing, isolated me and made it impossible to talk about it.

I advise “Heartbroken” to keep talking to her daughter about cutting, bullying, school and things the girl likes. Share activities with her. Take her hiking, bicycling, to museums or movies. Spending time with her is important for distraction and bonding. Physical activity can help depressed individuals feel better.

And she should understand recovery is never a straight line. There will be hiccups, setbacks and days when it doesn’t seem like it will get better. Eventually, with therapy (via counselors, bonding with friends/family, connection with nature/animals) and learning better coping habits, she will improve. – Kyle In

Bullies basically are cowards, and when a bully suffers a “bloody nose” the harassment usually ends.

Trust me, a suspension is worth the peace of mind that will be forthcoming. I also was a high school administrator in Southern California and did all in my power to curb the cowardly acts of bullies. I never told a victim just to walk away. Bullies enjoy hearing this type of advice.

Administrators, and yes, counselors, who use the “just walk away” advice that is given to the victim, are using the easy and highly ineffective solution to a serious student problem.

Victims of bullies suffer both

physically and mentally, and that’s why bullying must be eliminated from all schools. It can be severely curtailed if the school administrators issue swift and effective punishment to the bully. A parent must be required to attend a conference with the principal so he/she can understand why the punishment was given and what the discipline will be if another incident of bullying occurs.

Every student attending school, be it public or private, deserves the right to a safe school environment where learning can be an enjoyable and exciting adventure. For those students who suffer at the hands of a bully, attending school is a living nightmare, and school administrators who turn a “blind eye” to this type of behavior are failing in their role as educators.

It’s obvious you were never bullied when attending school.

“Heartbroken Mom From Anywhere” (Oct. 5) to print letters from readers offering suggestions about helping her teen daughter, who is a cutter: Dear Abby: I am a 33-year-old woman who has cut for many years, starting early in high school. What concerns me is the mom doesn’t completely understand what’s going on. Not many people do.

Self-harm is a cry for help from someone who doesn’t know how to voice his or her emotions. I, too, was bullied and didn’t know how to express the pain I was feeling, so I took it out on my body. Over the years, it became my coping mechanism, although an unhealthy one.

Helping someone who is self-harming requires understanding and a licensed professional to identify the emotions and suggest better ways to express them. One that worked for me was doing puzzles. It was a way to keep my mind and hands busy.

This teen also needs to know she is not alone.

Parents need to listen. I cannot stress how important it is for cutters to know someone is there for them with love and no judgment. –

The project is located in the City of St. Charles on Illinois Street over the Fox River from S. 1st Street to S. 2nd Avenue.
