Elburn’s Fifth Third Bank location to close in April ELBURN – A representative from a soon-to-be-closed bank branch talked to Elburn Village Board members Monday night.

Chris Bowling, the relationship manager at the Fifth Third Bank location at 415 S. Main St., Elburn, told board members that, as an Elburn resident, he understands some residents and officials will be disappointed to see the branch close. The location will be closed as of 4 p.m. April 12.

However, Bowling said, “this isn’t a change that will stop at Fifth Third.”

Bowling said customers are finding other ways to get what they need, and that banks are seeing a reduced need for branch locations. He said he will be moving to a location at 1776 S. Randall Road, Batavia. He added that

“The relationship is no longer tied to a building,” Bowling said. “It is tied to people.”

Jeff Walter, an Elburn Village Board member, said he was concerned about the number of people who won’t be coming to the town to do their banking. Bowling said he understood that. He also said the location’s ATM would continue to operate. He said

officials will decide whether to permanently install a Fifth Third ATM someplace in town.

Another board member, Bill Grabarek, asked whether there were any restrictions on the building. Bowling said he didn’t know of any restrictions. He said two people told him they might be interested in the building.

He said, in his years of experience in the banking industry, that he has seen the buildings repurposed as medical offices or restaurants.

Village Administrator Erin Willrett thanked Bowling for coming to talk to board members.

Aldermen OK Batavia sidewalk plan Requirement to be waived for some new residences

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The requirement for sidewalks to be installed in front of new homes in Batavia will no longer affect all properties, particularly infill projects.

The Batavia City Council voted, 10-4, on Monday to waive the rule in areas that are not within close proximity of schools, parks, bus routes and existing sidewalks.

The ordinance approved by aldermen also removes the liability for builders in such situations to contribute money for sidewalk construction elsewhere in the city.

Atac, who voted against the proposal, said it undermines the city’s stated policy of being pedestrian-friendly.

“This ordinance is a move backward,” Thelin Atac said.

Under the ordinance approved by the council, sidewalks will no longer be required in front of new homes constructed on properties more than 1,000 feet from schools, parks or bus routes, and more than 500 feet from an existing sidewalk.

The city staff had proposed waiving the construction requirement in such instances, but would have required developers to contribute to a sidewalk fund.

However, the council majority opted in favor of waiving the financial

requirement as well.

Areas within the city limits or planning jurisdiction are largely built-out, meaning that the focus of residential development is turning to smaller infill projects, often just a single home.

There are four areas of the city that tend not to have sidewalks, as they were first developed outside of the city limits under less-strict Kane County requirements.

These neighborhoods include the Batavia Highlands on the northeast side, Carriage Crest on the northwest side, Colonial Village on the southwest side and Woodland Hills on the far east side.

Also voting against the proposal were 2nd Ward Alderman Alan Wolff, 3rd Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit and 4th Ward Alderman Susan Stark.

County Board rules against treatment center

asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – As the Kane County Board on Tuesday prepared to act on a request regarding a proposed drug and alcohol treatment center near Campton Hills, attorney Keith Brown gave an impassioned plea for the members to consider the evidence with a critical eye. “[We] need this facility to help people who have disabilities,” Brown said, raising his voice. “This is a civil-rights case.”

Brown’s client, Maxxam Partners LLC, sought a special-use permit from the county to transform the former Glenwood School for Boys and Girls property into a state-of-the-art, 120bed, private pay, luxury treatment

center.

He had warned that the federal Fair Housing Act applies to the facility, as people with alcohol and drug addiction are considered disabled.

After more than two hours of discussion and public comment, the County Board upheld recommendations from the Zoning Board of Appeals and the County Development Committee and denied the request, 156, with one abstention and one member voting “present.”

Echoing what others said during public comment, board member Barb Wojnicki acknowledged alcoholism and substance abuse are widespread issues but said the Silver Glen Road property “is not the proper place for this type of facility.”

Others who voted against the

special-use permit were Deborah Allan, Brian Dahl, Mark Davoust, Drew Frasz, Becky Gillam, Joseph Haimann, Mike Kenyon, Kurt Kojzarek, Phil Lewis, John Martin, Brian Pollock, T.R. Smith, Susan Starrett and Maria Vazquez.

Board member Maggie Auger, who supported the facility, cited the tax dollars and jobs the treatment center would bring to the county.

Frasz noted Maxxam’s request also was opposed by four governmental entities, including the village of Campton Hills and Campton Township, and the forest preserve district purchased land around the property knowing it was a school.

Throughout the approval process, county officials heard from residents worried about the treatment center’s

effect on their property values and quality of life.

Opponents also were concerned about the distance between the Glenwood property and the nearest hospital and said the nearby two-lane roads are unsuited for the emergency traffic the treatment facility could generate.

“We don’t have the community services in our area to handle what their needs might be,” Pat Hartmann said during public comment.

Maxxam did, however, have its supporters. Several identified themselves as recovering alcoholics or addicts who benefited from services Maxxam planned to provide.

“What does matter is that people can and do get better,” said Scott Burgess, who identified himself as a recovering alcoholic. “I’m proof of that.”

Fewer options are available for those looking to recycle older TVs

alagattolla@shawmedia.com Kane County residents who are thinking about disposing their older-model televisions might want to move quickly. Their options are dwindling.

Because of growing demand and uncertain funding, many municipalities have discontinued their drop-off services, which allowed residents to dispose of their unwanted electronics items, including TVs. In Kane County, only West Dundee and St. Charles still offer the drop-off service, and both programs soon will be ending. The St. Charles drop-off site is at 1405 S. Seventh Ave., St. Charles. Its hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Items should not be dropped off outside of those hours.

That will leave one option for free disposal in Kane County – a monthly recycling collection by Kane County Recycles at 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles. The collection now takes place only during the warmer months of the year. The next event takes place from 8 a.m. to noon April 9. Another is set for May 14.

At those events, lines are long, and a news release warns that the lines might be significantly longer at the April 9 event because several additional items will be accepted. Jennifer Jarland, Kane County’s recycling program coordinator, said people will be turned away after seven trailers are filled. About 60 percent to 70 percent of the items on the trailers will be TVs, she said.

TVs, in particular, have become a significant issue. Officials noted that flat-screen TVs have grown rapidly in popularity, and – as their prices have gone down – people increasingly have looked to get rid of their older TVs. Also, they noted that the older TVs are heavy. They can’t legally be thrown in landfills. There are few places to send them for the recycling process. There are expenses involved, but the county and municipalities aren’t allowed to charge a fee. And there are just so many of the TVs. “There is just a glut of TVs coming in,” Jarland said. “We are receiving an unbelievable volume of old TVs. … Nobody expected it to be this bad.

And there doesn’t seem to be any end in sight.”

In a notice posted on its website, Best Buy notes that customers, as of last month, now will be charged $25 for each TV and computer monitor that is recycled, and it notes that the program is discontinued in Illinois and Pennsylvania because laws prevent it from collecting fees for the program.

Ken Anderson, Kane County’s director of environmental and water resources, said the process is labor-intensive.

“You’ve really got to have a staff or at least a staff member really devoted to make it work,” Anderson said.

ST. CHARLES – Kane County recycling officials want to make clear that there will be no recycling collection event taking place in St. Charles this weekend.

According to a news release, an event originally was listed in the Kane County Recycles Green Guide for Saturday, but the guide is a year old. That event was discontinued and will not take place.

The next scheduled Kane County event will be from 8 a.m. to noon April 9 at 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

According to the release, people should not arrive early.

The event is for Kane County residents only.

At the April 9 event, residents may bring electronics, books and liquid latex paint (for a fee).

Also, confidential document shredding will be offered.

According to the release, those who attend the April 9 event can expect long lines because there are several types of services being offered.

The release urged people to wait for the May 14 event because that will be restricted to electronics and books.

Lauzen said the cards are a screenshot of the county’s website, www.countyofkane.org, which urges the public to sign up for Kane County Connects, the county’s electronic newsletter.

Lauzen’s photo is on the cards because his photo is on the website – which is the case with other board chairmen, including Lauzen’s predecessor, Karen McConnaughay, Lauzen said.

“It’s still a card with his picture on it, promoting his name and his office,” Shepro said.

According to Shepro’s complaint, Lauzen also violated the county’s ethics ordinance when he used the auditorium at the county government center for a political rally to announce his re-elec-

tion campaign during regular business hours. Lauzen said the auditorium is a public space available to be reserved at no cost a first-come, first-served basis.

Shepro said because Lauzen’s office controls the calendar, he has an “inside advantage.”

“You cannot use your elected position to gain any advantage over the general public,” Shepro said.

Shepro’s complaint also states that Lauzen used county employees to research and create the financial charts Lauzen uses in his campaign. Lauzen said the charts were created for discussions during Kane County Board meetings and that he paid for those used in his campaign.

“They capture the truth of public matters … used in public meetings,” Lauzen said. “They are public documents … accessible to anybody.”

John Goreth, the forest preserve district’s director of operations and maintenance, said there were about 20 TVs dumped in the district’s northern area last year and about a dozen dumped in the southern region.

“People tend to clean their houses out, and we tend to get dumped on,” Goreth said, adding that removing items that have been dumped becomes burdensome.

Solutions to the problem could include allowing municipalities to collect a fee for the service or placing much more of the burden on the manufacturers. However, it is possible that the county program could come to an end before such answers can be found.

Since others have ended their programs, he said, there has been an increase in the number of items dropped off. He said the program never was meant to produce revenue.

Instead, he said, it was to “do what we thought was the right thing.” But, he said, “it’s become unmanageable.”

He said items sometimes are left at the gate outside of collection hours. A date to end the program in St. Charles has not yet been established, but it is scheduled to end before the next Kane County collection effort. Also, Kane County’s program is scheduled through May, but a June date isn’t guaranteed.

If that option closes, residents might need to call waste haulers or those who specialize in cleanup. One such business stated fees of $145 to remove smaller TVs and $195 for those larger than 32 inches. A fear is that people wanting to

GENEVA – An ethics complaint was filed Monday with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office against Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen.

The complaint was filed by Lauzen’s political rival in the March 15 GOP primary, Ken Shepro.

The three-page complaint alleges that Lauzen engaged in prohibited political activity during his work day as chairman; that he intentionally used the property and resources of the county for his campaign; and that he required county employees to participate in prohibited political activities in connection with his campaign.

Fermilab discovers rare variant of the tetraquark Fermilab fast facts

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Before it shut down in 2011, the Tevatron at Fermilab in Batavia was one of the most powerful particle accelerators in the world. Nonetheless, the facility has remained on the cutting edge of high-energy physics.

The Batavia laboratory has done so by doing work that complements the now-reigning Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland and by studying the neutrino, an elementary particle that is literally everywhere.

The ability of Fermilab physicists to make ground-breaking discoveries was demonstrated recently with the identification of a rare, exotic sub-atomic particle called a tetraquark.

Actually, the existence of tetraquarks – particles composed of four quarks – has been known to physicists.

At the core of the DZero detector is a tank of liquid argon, through which the beam line runs.

Inside of the machine, a visitor is surrounded by walls of massive metal panels. Below the catwalk that allows humans to tour the machine, one can see the gigantic hydraulic equipment used to close the space between the panels when the detector is in operation.

“We put the detector as close to the beam line as possible to measure the particle decay,” Lee said.

Now, Garbincius is off to Italy to make a report on the recent discovery to scientists there.

Garbincius said it is important for the public to understand what physicists do, which is why he serves as coordinator for Fermilab’s popular “Ask-a-Scientist” program, which allows visitors to do just that, generally on the first Sunday of the month at 1 p.m. in Fermilab’s Wilson Hall.

“We try to understand what the universe is made of,” Garbincius said of his work. “We’re always thinking about what’s next.”

The new tetraquark discovered by Garbincius and his colleagues contains an up quark, down quark, bottom quark and strange quark.

“Those are just whimsical names,” Garbincius said, grinning.

A quark is a fundamental building block of matter, with protons and neutrons each containing three quarks.

Quarks also come in pairs – a grouping known as a meson – but larger groupings are considered rare. Even rarer is the class found at Fermilab.

“Is it important? I don’t know,” Garbincius said of the discovery, but added that it may offer clues into how quarks combine.

The tetraquark discovery was extracted from data recorded at Fermilab’s DZero site, the name coming from its location designation along an accelerator ring. Inside of the DZero building rests a 5,000-ton machine of metal and wire that can detect the infinitesimally tiny particles that result when physicists direct beams of protons and anti-protons into collisions.

“We take a snapshot of that beam crossing,” said Bill Lee, a physicist working as the “run coordinator” at the DZero site, noting that it takes in the neighborhood of 1 trillion collisions to generate a single tetraquark.

DOROTHY J. WILLEY

Born: June 15, 1933 Died: March 6, 2016

Dorothy J. Willey, 82, of Batavia passed away March 6, 2016, at Edward Hospital in Naperville. She was born June 15, 1933, in the family’s home in Rural Wilton, Iowa, the daughter of Lee and Esther (Wieck) Norton. She was united in marriage to Elwood Willey.

For many years Dorothy was employed by the Batavia High School as a school secretary. She later worked at the Aurora Beacon News and the American Cancer Society. Dorothy was a longtime member of the Batavia Woman’s Club and a faithful member of the United Methodist Church of Geneva. Dorothy was an active member within the Church, where she served as a Stephen Minister.

When Dorothy was asked by her family how she wanted to be remembered, she simply said tell them, “She loved the Lord.”

Dorothy was adored by many and leaves behind countless friends whom she touched in special ways.

Dorothy was survived by her three children, Dr. James L. Willey of Elburn;

Lawrence E. (Jo) Willey of Fort Worth, TX, and Julie (John) Shepherd of Aurora, IL; four grandchildren, Andrew (Jen Gagnon) and David (Iris) Willey, and Jeremy (Madeline) and Jordan Shepherd; her three siblings, Helen Rider, of Davenport, IA, Don (Sue) Norton, of Durant, IA, and LeAnn (Donny) Rahlf of Wilton, IA, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Elwood; and a brother, Paul Norton.

Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2016, at Moss Family Funeral Home 209 South Batavia Ave. Batavia, IL. Historical icon to get renovations in 2016 Shannon Hall is a historical icon in Batavia. The former Holy Cross Church has hosted countless weddings, receptions, showers and local events in its 120 years.

It operated as a church until the Batavia Park District took ownership in 1995. The building’s roots are deeply ingrained in the community and its history is pretty fascinating.

Shannon Hall received its name from James Shannon, a local quarry owner.

The limestone used in the construction of the building was generously donated by Shannon.

At the time the church was being built, the country was in a depression. Many Irish immigrant workers were out of work and therefore volunteered their time to cut the stone that helped build the church.

Fast-forward nearly 100 years, and the Batavia Park District was in desperate need of programming space.

When the building went up for sale in the early 1990s, the park district board decided to go to referendum in an effort to buy the facility.

With the support of the community and the success of the referendum, the Batavia Park District took

The building was converted from a church to general programming space. New lighting and flooring was installed, and the building’s interior was painted.

The park district held a dedication in April 1996, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

“A lot of special care goes into keeping a historic venue like Shannon Hall restored and up to current safety standards,” Batavia Park District Executive Director Allison Niemela said. “In 2014, the district hired an architectural firm to perform a facility condition report on Shannon Hall and the entire Eastside Community Center complex to assist with the planning for future repairs of the aging facilities.”

The roof currently on the building is only the second roof since the building was erected in 1896.

“In keeping with the promise made to the public back in the ’90s, these renovations are an important step in maintaining the integrity of this historic structure,” capital projects manager Jim Eby said. “We’ve been looking forward to this project for years, and the board and staff are excited to see it come to fruition.”

The district’s goal is to avoid disrupting rentals during the construction process.

Renovations are being completed on the exterior only, and district staff hopes to have the project completed by fall.

Trump too poor to stage a third-party run

Donald Trump is not going to run as a third-party presidential candidate, even if he’s denied the Republican nomination.

There, I said it.

I’m not saying whether it would be a good idea for the GOP to deny him the nomination if he gets a plurality – but not a majority – of the delegates.

But if that does happen, he won’t run third-party: He can’t afford it.

I direct you to his personal financial disclosure form, which said he had about $300 million in cash and marketable securities.

That’s a lot of money! Stunningly, however, it is not enough money to run a major presidential campaign, which now clocks in at around $1 billion.

If Trump runs as a third-party candidate, the money to do so is going to have to come mostly out of his own pocket. The Republican Party’s traditional donors certainly aren’t going to help him. And, so far, he’s shown no ability to raise the kind of staggering totals that, say, Bernie Sanders has managed to get from small donors.

Trump’s campaign has raised just $25 million, of which only about $8 million comes from sources other than Donald J. Trump. He’s raised less in small contributions than Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio have.

Of course, maybe people just aren’t bothering to send money because he says he’s self-funding. Maybe in the general election, he could plead for funds and they’d open their wallets.

Only … part of his appeal is that he’s so very rich he doesn’t need donations. How long does that appeal last if it turns out he doesn’t have that much money in the bank and needs donors just as much as other politicians

He could maybe mortgage some of his interests, borrowing a billion dollars to fund a campaign. But this seems … unlikely. For one thing, by the most generous non-Trump estimates of his net worth, that would mean mortgaging about a quarter of his assets for a near-certain loss. Or mortgaging less but spending down all his liquid assets.

And to be competitive in the general election, he would have to spend something close to that amount. His extremely lean campaign strategy won’t work in the general. He’s benefited immensely from free air time, and – as of three months ago – it was estimated about a quarter of his campaign spending actually went to companies he owns. In the general, he’s going to have to spend a lot of money on things that Trump companies can’t provide, such as campaign staff and television and radio air time.

Once it’s down to two or three candidates in a general election, the media is going to make sure the other folks get as much air time as he does.

Trump, some of his detractors say, is just crazy enough to do it anyway. But I’m skeptical.

He’s been bankrupt before, and at age 69, he doesn’t have a lot of time for yet another comeback.

And even if he was mad enough to try, are bankers insane enough to help him? As known expert Donald Trump once noted: “These lenders aren’t babies.

These are total killers. These are not the nice, sweet little people that you’d think.” One suspects that they might, in the end, be the ones who kill any hope of a third-party campaign.

To the Editor: No one works closer to Chris Lauzen than me, his executive assistant. When approached to work for Chris, I told him “no” six times. People told me don’t do it. I did it and do not regret it. I only knew of him from political events.

I will honestly say I didn’t think I would make it past six months, but I am still here and I can tell you that we need Chris to remain our Kane County Board chairman.

Chris works every day and night for you. He has a great staff and the office is a much more congenial place than in years past.

He returns calls like no other. For example, a Peoria resident called one day to thank Chris for contacting her, the only one who spoke with her out of all county board chairmen and legislators she had contacted statewide.

I’ve heard things that have taken me aback, very few things; no one is perfect.

Knights bolster ‘D’ for Boylan

kdruley@shawmedia.com Six years and 26 days ago, Joe Conroy guided the Woodstock North boys basketball team to the first win in school history, a one-point home victory late in the program’s inaugural season.

Although Conroy coaches Kaneland now, he had occasion to mention the Thunder’s gym during a practice this past weekend.

“He says he wants to win there again,” Knights senior Ryan David said.

The Knights (20-8) will get their chance in tonight’s IHSA Class 3A Woodstock North Sectional semifinal against 29-2 Rockford Boylan, whose season résumé includes wins against a pair of 4A regional champions.

Unseating the Titans might appear daunting on paper, but the Knights aren’t worried. Their coach’s recent lesson is about the only history that concerns them.

Boylan handled another school from Conroy’s old Woodstock stomping grounds, Marian Central, to win the Freeport Regional championship Friday. On the same night the Titans rolled, 77-58, host Kaneland edged Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival Sycamore, 44-40, to advance to sectionals.

“They’re big, lengthy, good. But if we play our game,” David said. “I mean, we’ve faced some good teams in the past and we were able to do our stuff and were able to make a good game out of it.”

Kaneland experienced competitive games for much of the stretch run apart from a shaky finish.

Hampshire tried to upend the Knights in a regional semifinal, but the Whip-purs couldn’t sustain a hot start. Kaneland’s recovery especially soothed Conroy, who saw his team stumble at West Chicago and Sterling in the final week of the regular season.

Opponents brought better physical play in both matchups, a deficiency that wasn’t evident in the regional championship game against the Spartans, whom Kaneland defeated by 13 and 17 points in conference play.

Versatile Titans forward Sam Fehrle, a 6-foot-7 senior, recently returned from a hand injury to bolster Boylan.

He was one of four Titans in double figures Friday. Junior guard Zach Couper led the way with 21 points.

David, who paces the Knights with an average of 13.5 points per game, may need to offer extra defensive services if Boylan tries to consistently attack inside.

At 6-foot-4, David is one inch taller than Groen and two inches shorter than senior center Jake Gomes.

“Ryan David, he also can mix it up down there if we need him to,” Groen

said.

Groen and Gomes certainly welcome the company.

“We’re normally cast off by ourselves during practice,” Groen said, “while everyone else does some guard work, and it’s just me and him.

“Stuff in the paint, going against each other, going against a couple sophomores who we brought up from practice. Just working together and making each other better.”

Three months and 15 days ago, the Knights internalized that last part after winning their season opener.

Tonight brings the chance to keep that goal churning in a place their coach knows well.

Rested Saints ‘know it’s game time’ East set for first sectional since ’07

Last week, a quartet of St. Charles East boys basketball players took turns holding one.

Blitzing top-seeded Batavia netted the Saints the IHSA Class 4A St. Charles East Regional title, the program’s first such plaque in nine seasons. As fans departed, elation still stirred – which was more than could be said of the group in question.

The Saints arguably welcomed the rest either way. East also needed to win a regional quarterfinal game to set forth a postseason path that continues with tonight’s Rock Valley College Sectional semifinal against Prairie Ridge.

“You go, go, go and then you get just one day between games,” Saints coach Pat Woods said. “Of course, we enjoyed being at home here, but we’ll be glad to get that extra bit of rest and get refreshed.”

And to think, a group of youngsters dared ask the Saints to get in on some postgame pickup action Friday.

East (17-12) and Prairie Ridge (25-3) each is built to play an athletic style, so the additional layoff figures to benefit both sides. The sectional began

with Tuesday’s semifinal between Jacobs and Rockford Auburn.

Woods, in his fifth season with the Saints, has not opposed the Wolves in a coaching career that began at Ridgewood.

“I have plenty of video on them,” he assured. “They’re a little smaller. … They shoot the ball really well, they play very hard, they run very good stuff offensively. So it could be a fun, high-scoring game.”

East, which defeated Upstate Eight Conference River Division counterparts Streamwood, Geneva and Batavia to advance to sectionals, has its own, well-documented penchant for 3-pointers.

Still, Wolves coach Corky Card, father of Prairie Ridge senior point guard Logan Card, knows East also can strike with its size.

Enjoying a relatively healthy lineup and rotation after a regular season flush with injuries, the Saints boast a 12-player roster that features no one under 6 feet tall.

Sophomore forward Justin Hardy, who is 6-5, shined during regionals. At 6-6, fellow forwards Zach Hondlik and Ben Talarczyk are the tallest Saints, and have helped maintain a strong interior defense.

“If we can keep teams below 50 [points],” Hardy said, “we’re going to like our odds.”

Back from a broken arm suffered in East’s Thanksgiving tournament, junior guard Zach Mitchell illustrated the kind of two-way style Woods relishes.

Mitchell scored a game-high 17 points against Batavia while doing his part to keep the “D” on task.

He, too, enjoyed extra respite between the regional championship and tonight’s game, and has no doubt the Saints will channel their energy once more.

“Oh, yeah. It’s the playoffs, and everyone knows it,” Mitchell said. “Especially the crowd and all the noise.

Late eruption boosts host Hawks

editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Fox Valley Hawks boys club hockey team hasn’t had much success against the DuPage Stars this season.

That means absolutely nothing right now, especially with the Kaneland connection clicking.

Brock Williams and Jake Hummel, the lone Kaneland players on Phil the roster, lifted the Gabrielsen Hawks to a convincing 8-2 victory over the Stars in Tuesday’s Game 1 of the best-of-three ISHL Cougar Cup league championship at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

“We came out pretty hard and forced a lot of mistakes, but in the second period we gave them more room to skate and they put two in,” Williams said. “In the third period, we came out and executed like we wanted and finished them off.”

That’s putting it lightly.

After Williams broke the scoreless tie with 2:19 remaining in the first period, the Stars received goals from John McCarthy and William Carroll in a two-minute span in the second period, displaying some of their potent attack that had frustrated the Hawks at times in previous meetings.

The Stars held onto that lead until Hummel Trevor scored with 10:12 left Kurtzhals in the third period, setting in motion a rather impressive offensive finish.

“It was just a good transition goal,” Hummel said. “Good work by Josh Gadow (St. Charles East) for checking, and I picked up a loose puck. Our goalie, Aaron Karkos (Batavia), kept saying to shoot low, and I shot low and it went in.”

Remarkably, six goals followed as the Hawks broke things open, getting two goals from Morgan York (East)

Williams finished with two goals and three assists, his first five-point game.

“He definitely came ready to play tonight, and that first was big, it showed we can get on them early,” Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen said.

“The goals and the assists during the shocking third period were big.

Not to single him out, but I thought everybody up and down the bench came ready to play, and Aaron kept us in the game long enough until we got some offense.”

Gabrielsen may have been sur-

prised by the offensive juggernaut displayed in the third period, but not with the outcome.

He already had seen the Hawks beat the Stars by a similar score this season, despite losing the other three contests.

“We knew if we played our game we could beat them,” he said. “We had to play our game and stay out of the penalty box. They are quick and that’s why we needed to counter in transition.”

A strong power play also was crucial as it helped get things started early in the third period.

“It was big for us and we changed some things,” Gabrielsen said.

“Those two power plays, to me, was the turning point in the game.”

Chris Monroe (Batavia) had two assists and Evan Anderson (East) and Dom Iovinelli (North) each added an assist. Karkos had 18 saves.

The Hawks (26-8-4) will look to finish off the Stars as Game 2 moves to the Darien Sportsplex at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Sowizral, who Saints coach Jennie Kull called “a dynamic hitter” during the 2015 season, contributed 125 kills, 40 blocks and 21 digs as an East sophomore.

BATAVIA – North American Youth Sports will hold its annual spring youth basketball tournaments on April 16 at Batavia High School.

The tournament will be held in a oneday shootout format and features 12 different brackets: 4th-5th-grade boys; 4th-5th-grade girls; 6th-grade boys; 6thgrade girls; 7th-grade boys; 7th-grade girls; 8th-grade boys; 8th-grade girls; 9th-10th-grade boys; 9th-10th-grade girls; 11th-12-grade boys and 11th-12thgrade girls.

St. Charles East junior boys basketball player Zach Mitchell and the Saints are set to play their first sectional game since 2007 tonight, facing Prairie Ridge in an IHSA Class 4A Rock Valley College Sectional semifinal. The athletic, 6-foot-3 Mitchell, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, played a key role in East’s advancement, scoring 17 points in a 58-41, regional championship victory against Batavia. Tips for managing sinus infection Dear Dr. K: My doctor won’t give me an antibiotic for my sinus infection. So what can I do to feel better?

Dear Reader: Most cases of sinusitis are caused by viral infections. Viruses are bulletproof to antibiotics. All antibiotics can do in this case is cause side effects.

So, the best course of action for occasional sinusitis is to use self-care steps to ease symptoms while the body clears the infection.

Your sinuses are hollow spaces in your facial bones. In response to infection, the sensitive lining of the sinuses swells up and starts to pour out mucus, triggering nasal stuffiness, a runny nose and facial pain. You also might experience fatigue, cough, impaired sense of smell, fullness or pressure in the ears or headache.

While your body fights the infection, these self-care steps can help to ease symptoms: • Spray in some saline. Saline (saltwater) rinses are very soothing. Frequent, gentle snorts of a prepackaged saline spray can help to loosen mucus.

• Use decongestants. Over-the-counter decongestant pills or nasal sprays can be used on a limited basis to reduce stuffiness.

– Nasal spray decongestants: Limit yourself to no more than two doses a nostril a day for no longer than five days. If you use a nasal decongestant for too long, you can get the opposite effect from what you seek: Your nose may start running when you stop using the decongestant.

– Decongestant pills: A common side effect of these pills is moderate jitteriness.

You shouldn’t take such pills if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure or a heart condition.

• Take a pain reliever to ease headache or facial pain. When experiencing inflammation, you may get more benefit from a

So when might it be reasonable to ask your doctor to prescribe antibiotics for a sinus infection because it might be caused by bacteria? Here are some rules of the road: • When the symptoms are prolonged. For example, if after 10 days your infection is not getting better, it’s reasonable to call your doctor and ask about an antibiotic.

• When the symptoms are severe. Alarm signs of a bacterial sinus infection are sharp pain in the cheeks or teeth accompanied by a fever.

• When the symptoms are getting worse. If you have cold-like symptoms that progress to severe pain and fever, antibiotics might be worth considering.

Finally, even if your doctor does eventually prescribe an antibiotic, don’t expect too much. In clinical trials that compared antibiotics to a placebo pill for confirmed bacterial sinusitis, the antibiotic had minimal effect.

Why is that? Most likely it’s because the sinuses are blocked. A bacterial sinus infection needs to drain. It’s like a boil on your skin, if you’ve ever had one. Antibiotics help only a little – until the boil is lanced and the pus inside drains away.

Also, the antibiotic in the bloodstream can’t reach the bacteria inside the sinus, just the bacteria in the lining of the sinus (which is where the blood is flowing).
