Run for the Nuns

South Elgin event benefits religious orders, charity

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SOUTH ELGIN – Sister Patricia Jean, of the Kentucky-based Sisters of St. Joseph the Worker, knew to pace herself in Sunday’s 5K Walk/ Run for the Nuns.

“I started walking, and then I jogged for a while,” Jean said.

Jean was one of many who participated in the 5K Walk/ Run for the Nuns, held in Thornwood subdivision in South Elgin. This was the first year of the event, part of the Here I am Lord National Vocations Conference, hosted by St. Patrick Parish in St. Charles.

Participants took over the streets and sidewalks in the South Elgin subdivision. Proceeds from the race were split between the religious order of a race participant and Casa Guadalupe Drug and Rehabilitation Center.

Also participating was Theresa Nagel, of Chicago-based Daughters of St. Mary of Providence. She didn’t feel the need to rush. Nagel was glad temperatures weren’t chilly.

“I finished in 55 minutes and was one of the last ones to finish,” Nagel said. “We took our time and walked.”

One didn’t necessarily have to belong to a religious order to participate. Betsy Walsh and her daughter, Emma, 12, who attend St. Patrick Catholic Church, ran together, something they often do.

“A lot of the 5K races are charitable events,” Walsh said. “It is a great event to do together.”

With a time of 17 minutes, 26 seconds, Dan Richert, 35, of Hampshire, emerged as the winner of the event, which surprised even him.

“I was just trying to do under 18 minutes,” Richert said.

One of the biggest challenges of the race, he said, was watching out for ice.

“There were some corners that were icy,” Richert said. “I was happy it was warm.”

He said he ran with some friends who attend St. Patrick Catholic Church.

“This was my first run of the year,” Richert said. “I wanted to come and be a part of it.”

‘Unbelievable’ show draws enthusiasts

“I’ve been a Lego enthusiast for a long time,” Fry said.

“I like to see what other people are doing. It gives me ideas.”

Schaumburg resident Adam Stasiek, 37, a Lego train club member, is the assistant manager at the Lego store at Woodfield mall in Schaumburg.

“My hobby is my job, and my job is my hobby,” Stasiek said. “I have friends all over the world through this hobby.”

and play dough, a worm vs. cockroach composting station, yoga demonstrations and guided nature hikes by Kane County Audubon volunteers in the nearby natural area. There will be a plastic foam collection station. Those items will be taken to DART, a foam-recycling center in North Aurora.

GENEVA – Geneva resident Gil Wukitsch and his two children stared in awe at the medieval city comprised of 400,000 Lego parts.

“It’s unbelievable what they are able to do,” said Wukitsch, describing the creations made by the Northern Illinois Lego Train Club, which were on display Saturday at the Geneva Public Library. Wukitsch brought his two kids, Grant, 4, and Ava, 6, to the show.

“We were just coming to the library to get some books,” Wukitsch said. “He’s a Lego guy. I’m sure they will be inspired to go home and build some things.”

Hickory Hills resident Dale Klein, Northern Illinois Lego Train Club member, has worked on his medieval city since 2007, and he’s not done yet.

“It takes up my whole garage,” Klein said. “It’s fun. It’s someplace to let creative juices go. Lego is a great art medium.”

The display contains a castle, which took Klein two years to complete. Klein likes seeing the enjoyment people get from his display.

“I like talking to people and seeing their jaws hanging open looking at it,” he said. “How

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com BENSENVILLE – After a season full of overcoming obstacles, the Fox Valley Hawks boys hockey team finally met one they couldn’t hurdle over Saturday night in the second round of the 2015 AHAI Illinois state hockey championships.

Fox Valley had its season come to an end in a 6-1 defeat against the defending champion Waubonsie Warriors.

Trevor Kurtzhals had the lone goal for the Hawks, who were outshot, 47-11, and were unable to register a shot on goal in the third period.

The Hawks (20-5) kept Waubonsie off the scoreboard for the majority of the first period, despite being outshot, 10-3.

But Warriors center Cole Harris found himself all alone in front of the net with 3:59 to play in the period, beating Hawks netminder Aaron Karkos high glove side to break the deadlock.

Waubonsie doubled the lead 1:06 into the second period when Adrian Ressing took a feed from Evan Pike and slipped one past Karkos.

The Hawks responded 17 seconds later when a redirect off a defenseman bounced out to Kurtzhals in the slot, who buried the puck past Warriors goaltender Neel Aery to cut the lead in half.

“It was a good comeback, but unfortunately we could come back [further] in the game,” said Kurtzhals, a St. Charles North junior. “I think

But puck luck played a factor as well, aiding the Warriors in the second period.

Jackson Kozari added the sixth and final goal for the Warriors at the 11:19 mark of the third period.

The Warriors had 16 shots in the third, enabling Karkos to make 15 more of his 41 saves in the contest.

Karkos said after taking the barrage. “You take everything you have and put it all out on the ice because you know that if you don’t, your season is going to be over.”

Gabrielsen reflected on the stellar performance his goaltender had this season and his ability to keep the Hawks in the game with Waubonsie for a time.

“Aaron was phenomenal,” Gabrielsen said. “There was a reason he was an All-Star goalie and should have been considered in high regard, but our league doesn’t get any respect in the state, so we get what we get. You’ve got to love that the kid busted his tail. He was keeping us in it as long as he could.”

The Hawks, a combined team pulling from North, St. Charles East, Batavia, Geneva and Kaneland, will lose five seniors from their 13-man roster and were playing their first season together as a varsity program.

“As a first-year varisty club, we really didn’t come in with much experience,” Kurtzhals said. “We really had a

great group that bonded really well, regardless of the schools we came from.”

The 20 wins were significant, Gabrielsen said, especially because of the challenges of players working with different school schedules for practice times.

“If you told me that in September, I’d say you’re nuts,” he said of the team’s record.

“If you told me we’d play Waubonsie in March and we’d play them in a 6-1 game, I’d still say you’re nuts. They beat us 11-0 in the spring and they’ve handled teams pretty well.

“What I’m impressed about is I’ve got 13 guys. None of them gave up, none of them quit; they just wanted to keep fighting. We had all of the seniors out at the end.”

With the juniors leading the way in the postseason, getting playoff experience in its first season will certainly help Fox Valley moving forward.

“It’s really good experience to have made it into the playoffs and obviously played a team that outmanned us, and going into that knowing that, it’s good to have that experience under your belt,” Karkos said.

The game, which was slated for a 7:40 p.m. start, was delayed until 8:50 because of a scheduling snafu, with the teams being moved from one arena to another.

The coaches were not notified until just a few hours before, and were not given any definite time for when they would start play.

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush Unless the Bears are in a complete rebuild – two words they studiously have avoided – there is no reason to move Cutler. He is not the problem Marshall was, and Marshall is much easier to replace.

In a perfect world, I had hoped Randall Cobb would be Alshon Jeffery’s new running mate, but we know that’s not going to happen. The fact that he, Jordy Nelson and Aaron Rodgers all are locked up together in Green Bay through at least 2018 should send shivers down the spine of every Bears fan. What makes Cobb so valuable beyond his Pro Bowl ability is he still is only 25 years old.

Jeremy Maclin and Michael

Crabtree both are free agents and potential No. 1 receivers, although Maclin is a much better match with Jeffery than Crabtree. Maclin will turn 27 in May while Crabtree will be 28 in September and has been a bit fragile in San Francisco.

Maclin missed all of 2013 with an ACL injury but made a spectacular return in 2014, compiling 85 catches for 1,318 yards and 10 touchdowns. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely the Eagles, who recently have cleared a lot of cap space, will let him get away.

The player the Bears need to focus on right now is Torrey Smith. He’s not staying in Baltimore, and although he’s been a bit of an underachiever, he could be the perfect complement to Jeffery, a “Mr. Outside” with Jeffery moving into Marshall’s “Mr. Inside” role.

Although Smith has aver-

aged only 53 catches over four seasons, he also has averaged 16.9 yards a catch, scored 30 touchdowns (11 in 2014) and is the ultimate home-run hitter in this year’s free-agent crop.

He also just turned 26 on Jan. 26 and is a good kid who’s overcome some tough times.

He will be expensive, but no more so than Marshall and a much better fit.

The Bears also desperately need a No. 3, and Hakeem Nicks should be first on the list.

Brian Hartline, Cecil Shorts, Eddie Royal and Harry Douglas all also are attractive, available options for the third wideout spot.

I keep hearing the Bears have to go defense in the first round of the draft. If Pace believes it, he is doomed to not just follow, but walk in the footsteps of Jerry Angelo and Phil Emery.

I think Pace is smarter than that and knows that if he is going to succeed, he has to draft the best football player available with every pick he makes.

I would not draft West Virginia wideout Kevin White at No. 7, but if Amari Cooper somehow slips to that spot, the Bears cannot afford to pass up on the best player available.

USC’s Nelson Agholor, Central Florida’s Breshad Perriman or Ohio State’s Devin Smith could be great value in the second round, and Auburn’s Sammie Coates could be a steal in the third round.

Now, show me one available quarterback you’re comfortable will make the Bears better now or in the future?

Bulls drop 2nd straight, doomed by turnovers

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com SAN ANTONIO – Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau never can seem to come up with enough adjectives to describe the success the San Antonio Spurs have had in the last two decades.

That’s why he simply has nicknamed them ‘‘The Machine.’’

Well, that ‘‘machine’’ ran over, past and through the Bulls on Sunday. Despite 23 points and 15 rebounds from Pau Gasol and 22 points from Aaron Brooks, the Bulls fell to the Spurs, 116-105, at the AT&T Center.

It didn’t take much to figure out what went wrong, either.

The Bulls turned the ball over 20 times and were outscored, 35-9, in fast-break points.

“Obviously, the turnovers killed us,” forward Mike Dunleavy said. “It allowed them to get out in transition and score 35 fast-break points, which is absurd. Our offense seemed good enough to win. Just turning the ball over and not being able to stop them defensively hurt us.

“We were either getting great looks or we were turning it over. And then they were getting out and getting easy shots, dunks and all that. That really killed us, especially to start the fourth [quarter]. Just had some bad ones and couldn’t overcome it.”

The Bulls also couldn’t overcome 32 points from Tony Parker, who seemed to be able to do what he pleased. Even holding Tim Duncan without a field goal for the first time in his 18-year career didn’t help.

“It’s disappointing,” center Joakim Noah said. “We definitely should’ve played a lot better. They’re very active with their hands. They got a lot of steals and got into the open floor. We had no answer for that. We definitely have to take better care of the ball.”

The Bulls dropped their second consecutive game in the midst of four in five nights, and there didn’t seem to be any good news on the injury front, either.

Guard Jimmy Butler (strained elbow ligament) was with the team and taking shots, but there was no change in his

three- to six-week timetable.

Backup big man Taj Gibson (sprained left ankle) and guard Derrick Rose (surgery on right knee) were back in Chicago, and Thibodeau offered no update on their health.

One thing Thibodeau did address was talk that the Bulls seem to play with more emotion and fight without Rose.

That talk had grown louder after victories last week against the Washington Wizards and Oklahoma City Thunder.

“It’s not that,” Thibodeau said, downplaying the idea.

“It’s that our margin of error is so small. You never can underestimate how hard you have to play to overcome being short-handed.

“You’re not replacing Derrick or Jimmy or Taj individually; we have to do it with everyone. So [with emotion is] the way we have to play.”

The players understand that.

“I think we’ve got good spirit, good resiliency; I don’t think that’s questioned,” Dunleavy said. “We’ll keep fighting through it, weather the storm, and I think we’ll end up with our head above water.”

I have reported for you for a couple of months now that Brandon Marshall would be gone before the beginning of free agency and Jay Cutler will be the Bears’ starting quarterback for at least one more season.

That said, I have no idea what general manager Ryan Pace and coach John Fox are thinking right now. They have until Thursday to release Cutler and avoid owing him another $10 million guaranteed. Perhaps they will?

But the flood of speculation we’ve seen with Marshall gone, Cutler’s exit must be right around the corner is silly and uninformed.

I suspect Cutler will be here because at the moment he is impossible to replace and the way the salary cap works in the NFL today, the Bears will be forced to spend that $10 million elsewhere anyway.

When he was in eighth grade, he had a crush on a girl named “Lisa.” She rejected him because she had a girlfriend. Then he dated a girl, “Annie,” but it didn’t last because he said he felt only friendship for her. Then he became friends with this boy “Joey” in high school, who spent the night several times.

He told me from the start this boy was gay (this is the boy he kissed). Now Joey has a girlfriend.

To say the least, I’m confused. I know that in this generation, everything is acceptable. I have no problem if my son is gay, and I will love him no matter what, but I honestly think he is just confused. (He says this, too.)

Last week we looked at deals that gave the declarer a second chance to make his contract – no humbug. Sometimes, he had to choose the better approach; on others, he could try both options if he planned the play correctly.

Here is one more. South is in three no-trump. What should he do after West leads the heart queen?

South, with so many aces and kings, might have upgraded his hand and opened two clubs. That may have persuaded North to look for a high-level club contract. Here, five clubs would have made. Six clubs would have been a fair but unsuccessful contract.

Declarer would have needed clubs 3-2 and either diamonds 4-3 or spades 3-3, which I make just over 51 percent. (Plus a fraction for an opponent being squeezed when he holds four-plus spades and fiveplus diamonds.)

South has eight top tricks: two spades, two hearts, one diamond and three clubs. The immediate reaction is to assume a 3-2 club split and expect to roll home with two overtricks. But if clubs are 4-1 or 5-0, is there any chance?
