Three Dems clash in 14th District

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Three Democrats are seeking their party’s nomination for the 14th Congressional District in the March 15 primary. John Hosta of Spring Grove, Jesse Lee Maggitt of Plainfield and Jim Walz of Gurnee all say they could do a better job in Congress than incumbent U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, who is unopposed in the Republican primary.

The primary winner will run against Hultgren in the Nov. 8 general election.

Each candidate spoke at a recent forum hosted by the League of Women Voters for Central Kane County. About 30 people attended the forum, held at the Kane County Branch Court in St. Charles.

Hosta said he sees the nation in trade policies that do not benefit the country.

“I started my own business and know what it means to balance a budget,” Hosta said. “One of the main reasons I’m running is, we’ve lost 8 million overseas manufacturing jobs, which has contributed approximately half-billion to a billion [dollar] loss of revenue to our government.”

Hosta said the job loss has affected the middle class. Walz said he was running because the middle class was “woefully under-represented.”

“It seems like only the big money gets attention, and that does not seem quite right to me,” Walz said. “I want to be [the] representative of the 14th District because of the disastrous Citizens Unit-

Walz said the makeup of Congress needs to change, with Democrats as the majority, as well as having a Democrat in the White House. All three Democrats said they were pro-abortion rights.

“I am very pro-choice,” Walz said. “It amazes me that there’s a party in Washington – that wants small government, but it seems as though when it comes to women’s health, they want to butt into

their life. … It’s amazing that older, whiter men want to dictate to women to … make their decisions that are so personal and so emotional. It’s just embarrassing to watch, as a man.”

Hosta said he agreed with what most Americans believe, that women in the third trimester should not have abortions.

“I think funding should be increased to help them have children in their third trimester,” Hosta said. “I don’t think abortion should be happening in the third trimester.”

Although he arrived late, Maggitt joined the other two in saying that he was pro-abortion rights. Maggitt said as a former combat medic, he spent time bringing babies into the world.

“I don’t get to tell a woman what to do with her body – just as my body belongs to me,” Maggitt said. “I respect that.”

Three seek Republican nomination in 11th District

bokon@shawmedia.com A physicist, a doctor and a DuPage County Board member have something in common: They are candidates in the Republican primary for the 11th Congressional District.

The circuitous 11th District winds between Joliet to Aurora, taking in North Aurora and other towns.

The winner of the Republican primary March 15 will face incumbent U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, who runs unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Herman White

Herman White is a physicist who has worked at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia for 42 years.

Should he win, the 11th Congressional District would have the distinction of putting two physicists on the ballot for the general election in November. Foster also is a physicist who formerly worked at Fermilab.

“I had one of my friends call me from Washington to tell me, ‘We’re biting at the bit to say we have two high-energy particle physicists running for Congress in the United States,’ ” White said. “I said, ‘I hope that’s the case.’ ” Having a scientist in Congress is an asset, White said, given the technical complexities involved in such issues as the Iranian nuclear deal.

But he considers his community service more important in his prospective role as a congressman.

White is a former member of the board of police and fire commis- Herman sioners in the city of Na- White perville, where he lives, and of the board of directors of Edward Hospital. He is on the board of trustees at North Central College in Naperville, and he is the vice chair of the board for the Teachers Academy for Math and Science

in Chicago.

White believes his experience gives him practical insight on health care, education, student debt and public safety issues. He wants to see the federal budget passed on time, saying it would promote a serious discussion of how to balNick Stella ance spending with expenses.

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The dual retirements of City Administrator Mary McKittrick and Police Chief Steve Mexin formally were announced Monday at the Geneva City Council.

In two unanimous votes, aldermen approved the appointment of Stephanie Dawkins as city administrator beginning June 13, and for Cmdr.

Eric Passarelli to be police chief May 9.

“I cannot say enough good things about Miss Dawkins,” Burns said. “She has served well as second-in-command or second chair, if you will. I believe she is eminently

qualified to succeed Mrs. McKittrick in the role as City Administrator.”

Dawkins began working for Geneva in 2008 as Assistant City Administrator/Director of Administrative Services, where she was responsible for all operations in finance, human resources and information technologies diviStephanie sions, officials said.

Mexin and Passarelli were not at the meeting as they had another commitment, Mayor Kevin Burns said.

“Chief Mexin tendered his resignation a few weeks back,” Burns said. “We owe him a debt of gratitude.”

Passarelli served the city more than 22 years, Eric Burns said, earning the Passarelli respect and trust of his fellow officers.

“All of us had the pleasure of working with Mary,” Burns said. “I have worked with Mary virtually throughout her career at the city …

St. Charles City Council approves requests for craft beer festival, among other measures

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A service club seeking to bring a one-day craft beer festival to downtown St. Charles got the green light from the City Council on Monday.

Aldermen granted the St. Charles Breakfast Rotary Club a liquor license for the Tri-Cities Craft Brew Fest.

It is set for the afternoon of June 25 in Lincoln Park.

Additionally, the council approved an ancillary sidewalk closure along North Fifth Street and an amplification license for the event.

Each item passed, 7-1, with two absent and 4th Ward Alderman Jo Krieger dissenting.

In a presentation to the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission last

month, Rotarian Curt Barrett said the festival would serve as a fundraiser for the organization. Attendees may sample 18 3-ounce samples provided by as many as 30 brewery stations.

Brew Avenue Events, a company that specializes in craft-beer festivals, is assisting with the event.

A site plan for the festival calls for a music stage, a designated driver tent, portable restrooms, food vendors and food trucks, as well as fencing around Lincoln Park. It indicated the playground will remain open to the public.

According to city documents, the St. Charles Breakfast Rotary Club will absorb any street closures, the use of barricades, city electric or city personnel.

Highway, which wants to add beer and wine to its menu.

Bottle caps can remain on the bottles to be recycled as well. After you recycle the product, the plastic is broken down and used to create other products ranging from fleece jackets to carpeting. In fact, five plastic bottles scan be used to make a polyester t-shirt.

Remember plastic grocery bags should not be placed in the recycling bin. Instead you can return them back to grocery stores and big box retailers.

The plastic grocery bags are recycled and used to make new products such as backyard decking, fences, playground equipment and even plastic bags.

Key hurdle ahead for Maxxam’s proposed treatment facility location

bschory@shawmedia.com From the first moment Maxxam Partners LLC sought a special-use zoning permit for an alcohol and drug treatment center last year in a former boys school near Campton Hills, battle lines were drawn.

Attorney Keith Brown, representing Maxxam, said his client wanted to convert the former Glenwood School for Boys, at 41W400 Silver Glen Road, into a 120-bed, private-pay, luxury treatment center with detoxification. The facility would be state-of-the-art and on the tax rolls, generating more than $300,000 in property taxes a year, Brown said at the first of what would be nine days of hearings.

“This project will be one of the top places in the country, one that will make our community proud,” Brown, a former Kane County chief judge, had said.

Brown was speaking to more than 100 people who packed the Kane County Branch Court in St. Charles. Nearly all of them were against it. In all, the Zoning Board of Appeals continued its hearings on the Maxxam request over nine days for more than 20 hours of testimony.

As Maxxam’s petition for a special-use permit to allow the treatment center is before the Kane County Board today, it comes with some baggage.

In addition to the public outcry against it, the Kane County Zoning Board of Appeals voted, 4-3, not to recommend it. The Kane County Development Committee voted unanimously not to recommend it. According to the agenda, Maxxam’s proposal does not have a staff recommendation.

••• Residents who testified against Maxxam’s petition objected on several fronts.

Some said it was too close to their houses and farms. There are fears about security if addicts would leave the facility to meet drug dealers in the nearby forest preserve or came through their backyards or kitchens. There are worries that it would divert ambulance and police calls away and concerns that it would affect their property values.

Among those concerned was Campton Hills resident Terrill Smith, who said the facility – even with a virtual fence, thermal imaging technology and security guards – would not be secure.

“The virtual fence with thermal imaging is easy to fool,” Smith said. “I hunt hogs in the dark with thermal imaging.

“I have lived in my house for 23 years,” Freda said. “If there had been a drug rehabilitation facility there, I would not have bought it. … I don’t care if you call it new math or not, it is my belief that property values would go down.”

One of the few members of the public to testify in favor of Maxxam’s petition was Plato Township resident Stephanie Schmidt, who said she lost a grandson to a heroin overdose.

“I think it’s very important that the adults have a chance to heal themselves,” Schmidt said. “They have a disease. And if this facility can help them, that’s wonderful. … Had my grandson had an opportunity to get into a facility like this, I would not have found him dead in my basement three years ago. These people absolutely need the help.”

Dietrich shared her personal story of addiction and recovery, saying she has been sober for more than 23 years.

“I went into drug treatment at age 24,” Dietrich said. “I am the face of addiction.”

Dietrich said she has counseled and assisted thousands of people struggling with addiction. Dietrich said it would be “abnormal” for addicts in voluntary treatment to leave the facility and pose a risk to the surrounding residential community.

“People should be afraid of drug addicts and criminals who are out in the streets of large cities like Chicago, who do not have access to treatment and where treatment is not available,” Dietrich said.

But members of the public, such as Elgin Township resident Vincent Barlow, were not swayed.

Barlow, of the 41W600 block of McDonald Road, said he lives within 50 yards of the proposed treatment center.

“As you are defending the possible customers, I want to defend the people in this room,” Barlow said. “She is telling us these stories of how we should be compassionate towards people who have needs. And I’m asking all of you the same thing: You be compassionate towards us, instead of calling us sensationalists and people who are fear mongers. We are not.

going to be helping her … she doesn’t know that yet.”

Krecl turned to the bride-to-be and said, “surprise!”

And everyone in the group laughed.

Leong said she was not the least bit surprised that Krecl would help plan the wedding.

“I just met her this morning, but I know her already,” Leong said, smiling.

Though the Geneva Bride planners worked to have the wedding walk be more inclusive of men and their interests, most participants were women.

Some men, such as grooms-to-be, Brian Whalen of Aurora and Andrew Majetich of Elburn, waited patiently outside the Herrington while their fiancées were signing in.

“I’m the ‘plus one,’ “ Whalen said, referring to the guest a bride could bring to the walk.

“I have no idea what to expect,” Majetich said. “I have no expectations. I’m just being a good boyfriend/fiancé.”

GENEVA – More than 100 brides-tobe and their mothers, future mothersin-law, fiances and friends came to the ninth annual Geneva Bride Wedding Walk on Sunday. They were easy to spot in the downtown area, with their pinkand-black checked scarves and white swag bags.

Participants signed in at the Herrington in Geneva before they left to tour 13 boutique wedding businesses, ultimately winding up at a vendor reception with a chance to win an all-expenses-paid honeymoon in Mexico.

Among those participating were Maple Park resident Amber Semmerling, 25, and her maid of honor, Elgin resident Molly Sanderson.

“We’re looking at wedding venues,” Semmerling said. “I’m getting married in 2017. We haven’t picked a date yet.

I’m looking for what can accommodate 175 people.”

“It’s a good idea – there’s a lot of shops around here,” Sanderson said of the event. “And the weather is not bad.

Continued from page 6 Brown both warned the zoning board that the federal Fair Housing Act applies to the facility, as those with alcohol and drug addiction are considered disabled.

Brown compared it to when his father, as an African-American, encountered the same problem trying to buy a house in 1967. The Fair Housing Act was passed to stop that type of discrimination, Brown said.

“Federal law says disabled people should not be treated with fear … anger … or disrespect,” Kolb had said.

“They have a right to live in rural areas as well as urban areas … and the right to enjoy open space.”

Another issue was the ability of the Fox River and Countryside Fire Protection District to respond to anticipated ambulance calls to the facility.

Brown and petitioner Steven Marco made an offer to pay the fire district $50,000 over three years and to be responsible to pay for any calls to the facility. Fire district attorney Ken Shepro said the cash being offered would not help the district with wear and tear on its equipment.

“It seems to me, now that they were voted down by the zoning board and unanimously by the development committee, now they are coming here, after all,” Shepro said. “My recommendation is that this proposal does not satisfy the concerns we voiced through our testimony and discussions with the county and the zoning board.”

He meets a lot of people, which Stella believes is an asset for Congress.

“I am the most in touch with the citizens of the 11th District,” he said. “I think our current representatives [in Congress] have forgotten what the term ‘representation’ means. I am out every single day talking with people who live in the district.”

Stella said the most important issue facing the country is the economy. He favors simplifying the tax code, replacing current income tax systems with a flat tax, fair tax on consumption, or a combination of both. He said government needs to change policies to boost the economy.

“One way you can do this is take the handcuffs off the small business sector,” he said. “We all know that they’re the drivers of the economy.”

Stella supports repeal of the Affordable Care Act. “The changes that are going on in medicine are not changes for the good,” he said. “The Affordable Care Act has forced millions of people into Medicaid.”

Stella believes an issue on which he can make a difference in Congress is the nation’s heroin epidemic. Doctors in the 11th District have been seeing the problem for years, he said, and the best way to address it is to cut off the supply.

“The heroin is coming in from outside the country,” Stella said. “We need to secure the borders.”

Mourning more than the loss of Nancy Reagan

While I was growing up in the 1980s, Nancy Reagan, who passed away Sunday at the age of 94, wasn’t my favorite. Then, the first lady of the United States, wife of President Ronald Reagan, seemed to my teenage self a cold, stern figure who lectured us to “Just Say No” to drugs. The Hollywood glamour she and her husband brought to the White House those eight years only added to the distance – psychological and experiential – that seemed to be between her and me. That view of Reagan continued long after she left Washington.

But all that changed in the evening hours of June 11, 2004.

We all watched the nation pay its respects to the 40th president of the United States. The man who led the Reagan Revolution and who so many Republican leaders struggle to emulate was being laid to rest after succumbing to Alzheimer’s disease.

The pageantry started in Washington and ended in the glowing sunset at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.

Nancy Reagan, seated in a chair, watched an honor guard as they removed the U.S. flag from her late husband’s coffin and dutifully fold it. After it was handed to her, Reagan held the banner to her heart, as if she were holding him one last time. And then that moment happened. The one so touching, so human that grown-up me could never look at her with those teenage eyes again.

Placing the flag atop the coffin, Reagan rested her head on the casket as she patted and rubbed her hand across it. As The Post reported then, Reagan had been through a week of public remembrances and “somber rituals” by the time she “surrendered to her grief.” The woman who turned around her “Queen Nancy” reputation in Washington by making fun of herself in a performance of “Second Hand Rose” in 1982 at the Gridiron dinner was now a grieving widow. It was hard to watch her public pain as an adult and not feel for her.

Remembering Reagan’s loss then and reflecting on the Reagan presidency, including her strong presence in it, now will force us to consider how much more has been lost. The reverence for the presidency and respect for the person entrusted with it, once omnipresent in Washington, is gone. The dignity of the process of nominating and electing that person has never been pretty. But Donald Trump has degraded it beyond anything the former president would recognize or condone.

The remembrances of Nancy Reagan will take us all back to the days of the Reagan presidency. An astonishingly simpler time when decorum ruled and compromise was essential to governing. That’s not to say Reagan’s presidency was perfect or that the late first lady was an uncontroversial figure. But at a time when the political process has been debased by talk of the size of hands and other body parts, her death is a useful reminder that those Republicans now seeking to follow in her revered husband’s footsteps aren’t worthy of filling the shoes of a giant.

To the Editor: I have known Drew Frasz for nearly a decade and know he serves the citizens of the county very well.

Drew was our board member for the Sugar Grove area, as well, before the boundaries were redistricted.

During the time of sometimes tenuous discussions and review of agreements affecting the citizens of Sugar Grove, Drew was a tireless champion to bring all parties to the negotiation table.

Even after Drew was no longer “representing” the area of Sugar Grove (due to new districts being drawn), he continued to fight tirelessly for a “common ground” solution to a decades-old problem.

I recall his asking for calm, studied, fair and open communications. And Drew did just that.

He made sure that all parties to the long-standing water situation in the Mallard Point subdivision were

in constant communications with each other.

Even in the darkest hour, when an agreement had been “reached,” the deal fell apart when one side decided they didn’t want to work on the issue any further. I recall Drew saying, “all I want for Christmas is an equitable solution.”

Well, that did not stop Drew, who again brought all sides back to the bargaining table, and a successful resolution was reached.

I had every reason to stop working on behalf of the citizens, as well, as I was diagnosed with cancer during the height of negotiations.

I did not stop, and neither did Drew. He pushed, pulled, prodded and got ALL of us in the same room, and the citizens of Sugar Grove

were the winners in this long-standing situation.

If you want perseverance and service to others above self, then Drew Frasz is your most qualified candidate to continue to serve the residents of Kane County, and District 18 as well.

Drew has shown a passion for service to the community, the citizens of the county, time and time again.

I am proud to call Drew a friend, neighbor and fellow public servant.

No one must have told St. Charles North senior Emmy Feddor and the North girls water polo team.

In her first game on varsity for the North Stars, Feddor recorded four goals on an efficient 4 of 6 shooting to lead North past Schaumburg, 10-6, on Monday.

“For me, being my first year on varsity, I wasn’t expecting to play as much as I did and play as well as I did,” Feddor said.

The Saxons (0-1) stormed back with three straight goals in a two-minute span in the second quarter, all three coming via lob shots from Jessica Bukielski on the wing.

time, North’s defense clamped down, allowing just one goal, while Feddor notched a trio of goals to push the lead out of reach for the North Stars.

“Emmy played really well,” North head coach Nick Engel said. “We normally run on the other side, but they kind of shut that down, so it was really nice to see them do something different and adapt to the defense.”

Brittany Veto did a little bit of everything for the North Stars, with three goals on 3 of 10 shooting and four assists; Veto also set the tone defensively with a team-high 10 steals. Goaltender Claire Rich had seven saves and a steal for North.

“As the season goes on, I think we’re definitely going to improve off today,” Feddor said. “The first half, we let in a few goals we shouldn’t have, a few lobs shots. But in the second half, we worked harder as a team on de-

fense and really locked down.”

For the North Stars, who lost four seniors from last season’s squad, there will eventually be growing pains for some of the younger players in the lineup. That development process has been accelerated as Monica Guyett, who was in nationals for swimming, is currently injured and is out for at least another week.

“Everyone else has to slide up to fill those roles. I think it’ll be interesting. I think our defense will figure it out, as you saw in the second half,” Engel said. “We’ve got a couple girls moving up from JV into the varsity ranks, and they’ve got to learn that the space shrinks a lot at the varsity level.

You can’t give them a foot of space out there. You can give them six inches, if that.”

The North Stars will host Lincoln-Way Central on Thursday.

Although Groen’s future athletic exploits remain to be seen, he chose No. 22 at Kaneland for an equally elementary reason entering his sophomore year.

“I’ve typically been 44 all my life, but I kind of just wanted to switch things up as I got better as an athlete,” Groen said. “So I decided to kind of stick with it a little bit but still switch it up, so I decided to halve it.”

Groen, a nimble forward and the sixth man for the boys basketball team, will continue to wear No. 22 as the Knights’ season continues with Wednesday’s Class 3A Woodstock North Sectional semifinal against Rockford Boylan.

Groen’s former number loomed over Friday’s triumphant regional championship victory against Sycamore, a 44-40 Knights victory on their home floor. At the assembly some 32 hours earlier, Beebe reiterated his disdain for the longtime rival Spartans and informed the pleased gathering he would sit among them at the game.

A large, boisterous crowd – this one with a few more adults – saw him there.

“Yeah, I think that definitely helped,” Kaneland senior guard/forward Ryan David said. “I mean, it can never hurt when Don Beebe shows up to the game. He can definitely draw a few more fans.”

Beebe, who called the jersey retirement “the greatest reward” of his entire football career, posed for a photo with Groen after the assembly.

Groen didn’t even need to tell Beebe he was the former and final custodian of No. 22.

“It was everybody around me who was saying, ‘This guy’s the last one to wear 22,’ ” Groen said.

Andrew is a senior diver on the East Swim and Dive Team. He is the school record holder for the highest diving score in a meet as well as the Sectional Diving Champion this year at the St Charles North Boys Swim & Dive Sectional.

Bennett is a senior basketball player who recently concluded his Geneva career by leading the team to a 22-7 record. A two year starter, Bennett led the team in scoring this year averaging 16.7 points per game which included a team best 56 three point goals. He was named to the All-Tournament team at both the Crystal Lake Central and DeKalb Invitationals and was recently selected to the Upstate 8 River Division All-Conference Team.

Batavia Boys Basketball is currently 19-9 heading into the post season. Team accomplishments include UEC River Champions and Rockford MLK Shootout Champions.

Canaan is the ultimate example of everything a student/athlete should be. He is one of the team captains and is always the first in the gym to work and one of the last to leave. He holds a GPA that is an A average.

He has committed himself to play basketball next year at Indiana Wesleyan University.

A Central Michigan commit, Smith recently concluded his career as the Storm’s all-time leading scorer.

He averaged 15 points per game in his senior season while maintaining the reins as a team leader.

Luke McCurdy is a senior captain on the Burlington Central Boys Basketball team.

This season Luke averages 5.9 p.p.g., 4.5 r.p.g., along with 2.6 a.p.g, Luke McCurdy has been instrumental part of leading Burlington Central to a Big Northern Conference title and an overall record of 25-3.

Kaneland senior multisport athlete Mitchel Groen hardly encountered a catch-22 upon realizing his newly unique position in the school’s football history Thursday. “ ‘Oh, wow. I’m the last person to wear No. 22,’ that was my original thought,” Groen said. “It was really awesome to think about.”

Groen immediately connected those dots during an uplifting allschool assembly in which 1983 Kaneland alumnus Don Beebe, a six-time Super Bowl participant, received a commemorative golden football as part of the NFL’s recognition of its 50th Super Bowl last month.

Former Knights coach Joe Thorgesen called an audible, however, when he presented Beebe with a duplicate of Beebe’s No. 22 Kaneland jersey and informed the crowd no one ever would wear the number again at the school.

For the record, Groen, a 6-foot-3 receiver/linebacker, officially donned the double-deuce for the final time Nov. 7, during Kaneland’s road loss to Montini in the second round of the IHSA Class 6A playoffs.

Hawks skate forth into Cougar Cup final

editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Trevor Kurtzhals wasn’t going to take Leyden lightly Sunday afternoon.

Sure, the Fox Valley Hawks boys hockey senior knew his team already had beaten Leyden three times this season, but there was far more on the line this time – a trip to the Illinois Suburban Hockey League Cougar Cup league championship or the end of the season.

Obviously, Kurtzhals preferred to keep playing. His goal got things started in the first period while his four assists allowed the Hawks to build a comfortable lead that resulted in a 7-3 victory at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

“We couldn’t take them lightly at all. We knew they’d come out flying, so we had to do our best to come out flying as well and play our best,” Kurtzhals said. “It worked for us today. Our coaches stress to put the pressure on and always force errors, and that was our game plan tonight and it worked.”

The Hawks will meet the DuPage Stars – comprised of players from Hinsdale South, Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South and Lisle – in a best-of-three championship. The series begins at 7:35 p.m. today at Fox Valley Ice Arena. The rest of the schedule is to be determined.

“DuPage has beaten us three out of four times, so they’ll be a lot tougher,” Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen said.

“They’re a strong team, but to get there after today’s game was big, especially after we lost our game [Saturday].”

That loss was a 5-2 decision to Wheaton West, which eliminated the Hawks from the Blackhawk Cup state tournament.

“To be able to come out today after Saturday’s loss and take care of business was really great,” Kurtzhals said.

“We were very determined to extend our season, so now we’re pumped to have another game.”

Kurthals (St. Charles North) pounced on a loose puck and sent it past goalie Michael Pasterz with 11:20 remaining in the opening period.

The Eagles didn’t have many scoring chances, but knotted the score at 1 when James Weichbrodt buried his first of two goals.

“Our goal is to play like that and not give them many opportunities,” Gabrielsen said. “The kids know, if we play that way, we should be able to dominate a game. We just had to get smarter with our shots, and we did that today.”

range, while Chris Monroe (Batavia) found the net off a rebound, and Dom Iovinelli (St. Charles North) also scored.

“I don’t score a lot, but I’ve been shooting a lot at the net,” Bracken said. “I’ve got a pretty hard shot out there. The nice thing is I never have to worry because we have some many guys to pass to who can create good opportunities.”

The Eagles scored twice in the third period, including with 33 seconds left, while Josh Gadow (St. Charles East) joined in on the fun, becoming the sixth Hawks player to score.

“Beating a team four times, any team, is hard,” Gabrielsen said. “Our

guys came ready to play, were really hungry and took care of business. I was very impressed. Even when [Leyden] scored, we came right back and buried another one and didn’t let them get any momentum going.”

Jake Hummel (Kaneland) added three assists while Devin Chobrak (St. Charles North), Zack Rittenberg (Geneva) and Gadow also had assists.

Aaron Karkos (Batavia) made 18 saves for the Hawks.

“It’s a great feeling that we get to keep playing,” Bracken said. “As a senior, I don’t want the season to end.

I love hockey. It’s a huge part of my life, so it feels great to come out with a victory.”

“I think they need it at this point in the year, because it’s a grind,” Steel coach Dan Muse said. “My expectation is they’re going to … come back a little bit more jumpier as we go into these next upcoming games.”

The Steel, who resume play Saturday and Sunday with games against the Team USA national developmental program at Fox Valley Ice Arena, planned a sojourn of some sort when the USHL released its 2015-16 schedule. The club already knew it was extending its season by representing the league and USA Hockey in the Junior Club World Cup in Yekatarinburg, Russia, an event that began in late August, one month before the Steel’s opener.

Muse and his assistants quickly circled the first weekend of March.

Although the roster has undergone considerable turnover since the season started, the move figures to offer rejuvenation for everyone in the locker room.

“We knew it was always a thing,” said forward Marc Johnstone, who has played in 44 of the Steel’s 47 games, “but you never know how many days you’re going to get. It’s a long season, so I mean, it’s good to get a few of them off.”

Several players planned to travel home for the weekend, including defenseman Ruslan Rakhmatov, a native Russian whose family now lives in New Jersey.

“Living in the (United) States, I guess I miss Russia sometimes, but I think it’s a lot better here than it is there,” Rakhmatov said.

Rakhmatov (45 games) is tied with left wing Mitch Lewandowski for second on the team in appearances. Center Jake Jaremko boasts the club’s longevity lead, playing in all 47 games.

In the 1980s, a series of restaurant chains started decorating with old advertising signs, figures, bottles, and boxes to promote the idea of old-time menus and traditional food favorites.

There were already serious advertising collectors searching for signs that pictured authentic examples of past lifestyles, choices of merchandise and printing technology. Metal signs were the most expensive. A method of printing on tin was developed in 1876.

One popular but rare sign is the 16-1/2 by 10-inch Egg-O-See cereal self-framed, lithographed tin sign. Egg-O-See was a processed wheat cereal created in 1906 that was well-advertised. The sign pictures a boy in overalls eating at a Mission oak breakfast table in an up-to-date 1910 room. There is a potted fern on the windowsill of a leaded glass window. On the table is a blue-green box of cereal, a glass sugar bowl and a glass of milk. With the boy are his dog and two cats hoping for some scraps. The slogan on the frame reads “Dere aint go’n’er be no leavin’s.” Four of these signs sold for announced prices at large auctions between 2007 and 2015.

All were excellent condition with only a few flaws in the paint or a slight dent. The earliest sold for $664, and five years later, another brought $750. Then a year later one sold for $950, and last year, $2,250. Great advertising signs have been going up in price, but only when the graphics are great and the condition is excellent. *** Q: I have a table that was passed on to me by an aunt. It is 27 inches high and has three tiers, a round one in the center and two lower ones on either side.

The table has four legs, flared, under a harp pedestal. There is a mark stamped on the bottom, a triangle within a triangle and the name Mersman. Can you tell me how old this table is and what it is worth?

A: J.B. Mersman owned sawmills in northeastern Indiana, moved to northwest Ohio in 1876, and began to make tables. By 1900 he had opened a factory in Celina, Ohio, and was making dining and library tables and beds. Mersman turned the company over to two of his sons and by 1927, after a

Your silverplated tea set was made by Paul Revere Silver Co., a company in business in Boston by 1912 and out of business before 1922.

Sheffield is the name for a method of making silver plate by fusing a layer of silver onto a thicker layer of copper. A: Zsolnay Pecs is part of the mark for a Hungarian pottery started in 1853.The Art Nouveau pieces, often with three-dimensional women clinging to the sides of a vase, were made in the 1900s until about 1930. These were very out-of-favor with American collectors in the 1930s to 1960s and then slowly gained in price. Today a figural vase can bring thousands of dollars. A large, less elaborate piece as early as yours also will sell for thousands. Managing pain after angioplasty Dear Dr. K: I had angioplasty with a stent recently. I need to take aspirin and Plavix every day. I used to take ibuprofen for pain, but a neighbor said I shouldn’t take it if I’m on aspirin and Plavix. Is that right?

Dear Reader: Taking aspirin and Plavix after angioplasty and stent placement is standard care. Both aspirin and clopidogrel (Plavix) attach to blood cells called platelets to make them less sticky. You need these drugs to prevent the formation of a blood clot inside the stent. If a clot forms in the stent, it suddenly can cut off the blood supply and cause a major heart attack.

Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Other NSAIDs include naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve), celecoxib (Celebrex) and diclofenac (Voltaren). Like aspirin, the NSAID drugs both relieve pain and tend to make blood clot less easily.

As a result, the chance of having a serious internal bleed or bleed into the brain is higher when an NSAID is taken in addition to one or more anti-platelet drugs. NSAIDs other than aspirin also increase the chance of a heart attack and stroke in people with heart disease. That risk is unrelated to whether or not you take an anti-platelet agent.

So your neighbor is right that you need to discuss with your doctor whether to continue the ibuprofen. This is how I suggest you think about pain relief: • Start with a non-drug approach. Try a heating pad, ice or physical therapy, if appropriate. Even if these approaches do not completely relieve your pain, they might allow you to take a lower dose of a painkiller.

• Try acetaminophen. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be an effective alternative

• Consider other NSAID alternatives.

Non-acetylated salicylates are cousins to aspirin. They include salsalate (Disalcid) and choline magnesium trisalicylate (Trilisate). The bleeding risk is lower because they don’t affect platelets. And they cause less stomach irritation than other NSAIDs. • Use the safest NSAID. Some NSAIDs may be less risky than others. The prescription NSAID diclofenac appears to have the highest risk for a second heart attack. Some studies suggest naproxen has the lowest risk.

• Take your aspirin first. Not only does the aspirin you’re taking reduce your risk of a clot forming in the stent, it also reduces your risk of a clot forming elsewhere in the arteries of your heart and brain.

That reduces your risk of heart attack and stroke. Some studies indicate NSAIDs may interfere with aspirin’s protective effect.

So if you have heart disease and must use an NSAID, take the aspirin first. Wait an hour. Then take your required dose of the NSAID drug.

• Use only what you need. Take the lowest effective dose of an NSAID for the shortest period of time to relieve your pain.

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported children in America – ages 18 and younger – are adding unwanted pounds at an alarming rate.

In the past 15 years, the percentage of significantly overweight children has almost doubled. Earlier studies show it took 30 years for the overweight percentage to double, and this is cause for worry.

Among the reasons given for this increase: watching far too much television, talking or texting on cell phones, spending hours on computers, playing video games and busy parents who often rely on fast food to feed their families.

A word of caution, and also an important reminder: Obese teens usually spend their entire lives being overweight.
