Robots will go head-to-head today in Batavia tournament

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Mia Garbaccio feels a great sense of pride when the robot she has programmed does what it is supposed to do.

Garbaccio, a senior at Benet Academy in Lisle, is a member of Fox Valley Robotics team 355E Cobalt, which is ranked 10th in the world for programming skills.

The team will be going to the VEX World Robotics Championship High School Division that will be held April 23 to 26 in Anaheim, Calif.

“The code that I write is pretty much like a language,” said Garbaccio, who has been in Fox Valley Robotics for four years. “It is a creative outlet for me.”

After she graduates from high school this year, she plans to go to college to study biomedical engineering.

“Being a part of Fox Valley Robotics has really inspired me,” Garbaccio said.

Two more dead animals found at farm

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com HAMPSHIRE TOWNSHIP – Two more dead animals have been found at a farm in Hampshire Township where 94 petting zoo animals were impounded this week, officials said.

Sauceda said two baby goats were found dead Thursday, under a 12-inch mat of straw and fecal matter.

“There were 14 mini-goats in an 8-by-10 [foot] stall that had not been cleaned out in months,” Sauceda said.

“There was 12 inches of fecal matter matted in with the straw, and we are in the process of removing all of that. We found the dead baby goats yesterday, underneath the straw and trampled on by other goats in the small

By BRENDA SCHORY S T . C H A R L E S T O W NSHIP – In the wake of Kane County Animal Control impounding nearly 100 animals from a traveling petting zoo this week, a local feed store is stepping forward to help.

Tom Stopka, owner of Trellis Farm and Garden, at 2N492 Kirk Road, St. Charles Township, said customers can designate items for the petting zoo animals. Animal control will come and pick them up.

“We are a perfect location for everyone to do something,” Stopka said. “We are very happy to help.”

A list of needed items from animal control are straw for bedding, heated waterer for chickens, a rabbit bowl, chicken feed, rabbit feed, nesting boxes for chickens and prenatal equine feed.

Stopka said credit card orders can be taken over the phone, but not online. Stopka said the store will be making donations, as well.

On Wednesday, Kane County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Elgin resident Stacy Fiebelkorn, 34.

Kane County Animal Control Administrator Robert Sauceda said his office appreciated what the business was doing, as well as everyone else who was dropping off food and donations to help take care of the animals.

“It’s been great. People have been so willing and working around our schedule for it,” Sauceda said.

“People in Kane County ... are a very giving people.”

Fire dept. to conduct hydrant flow test ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Fire Department will be conducting a hydrant flow test Tuesday at 3800 E. Main St. The test will begin at about 10 a.m. and finish by 11 a.m.

Residents might experience rust in the water during or immediately after the testing procedure.

The water is safe; however residents might want to re-

frain from doing laundry until the water is clear.

In the event rusty water discolors clothes while being laundered, be sure to keep the clothing wet, and contact the Public Works Department at 630-377-4405 to request a rust-removing solution packet.

It is advised that drivers use caution in driving through areas being flushed because of water that might be on the pavement.

“The research showed how prominent he was in Geneva,” she said.

Mayborne originally came from the East Coast in the Jamestown area and first went to Chicago, and then to Geneva in 1848. He built his house on Second Street in 1855. He married Teresa Johnson and had four daughters but had no grandchildren.

Strube said his lineage died when his last daughter died in 1936.

GENEVA – The Geneva History Museum will host a presentation of the letters of Col. Joseph H. Mayborne, Civil War paymaster, a local attorney and state senator, from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the museum, at 113 S. Third St., Geneva.

Mayborne’s letters and other documents were found in a strong box in his former homestead in the 200 block of North Second Street, museum executive director Terry Emma said.

Emma said Jack Burgess, who owns the house now, found the box behind a closet while remodeling and called the museum to donate it.

“We had to go pick it up – it weighs 200 pounds,” Emma said. “This is a pretty awesome donation, a real coup for

us.”

Curator Jessica Strube said the box contained “a ton of documents” both from the Civil War and Mayborne’s letters to his wife, Etta, as well as lawsuits and filings from his court cases.

“It’s a genealogy goldmine,” Strube said.

The presentation will focus on Mayborne’s letters home to Etta and his background and his family’s background in Geneva.

“His letters were from all over, some noting significant places, and a lot of battles such as the Battles of Corinth, Miss.,” Strube said.

Mayborne served as a member of the board of supervisors – now called the county board – and was a state senator from 1876-80. He also helped to organize the Republican Party in Kane County, Strube said.

8OBITUARIES LILLIAN ALLISON Born: Feb. 11, 1930 Died: March 6, 2014 BATAVIA – Lillian Allison, 84, of Batavia, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 6, 2014, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

He was born Feb. 11, 1930, in Chicago, the daughter of Leo Charles and Isabelle (nee Paladeau) Vieu. She was united in marriage to Robert E. “Bull” Allison Sr. She is survived by her children, Rob E. (Bonnie) Allison Jr., Kass (Matt) VanOvermeiren, Jerry (Barbara) Allison and Suzanne Allison, all of Batavia; her grandchildren, Erik Gieser, Justin (Gabriela) Allison, Josh (Krystal) Allison, Abe VanOvermeiren, Jake (Amy) VanOvermeiren, Melissa (Chad) Steward and Ben Allison; her great-granddaughter, Emersyn Paige Allison; a special niece, Nancy “Tootie” Allen; twin great-grandsons on the way; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert “Bull” Allison Sr.; her stepfather, Edward Erhman; and her siblings, Dolores Satterfield, Leo Raymond Vieu and a twin brother who passed away at birth.

All services and interment will be private.

MILDRED MAXINE CRUSING Died: Feb. 7, 2014 ST. CHARLES – Mildred Maxine Crusing, 84, formerly of St. Charles, passed away Feb. 7, 2014, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Hundreds of preschool children knew her as “Miss Maxine” at the Merry-Go-Round Nursery School, where she taught for many years.

She was a member of Baker Memorial United Methodist Church.

Maxine and her husband, Bob, retired to Hot Springs, Ark., in 1982. She worked as a pari-mutuels teller at Oaklawn Race Track for 20 years and enjoyed playing golf and bridge.

She is survived by her son, Robert Crusing Jr. (Linda) of Beach Park; daughters: Donna Owens, of Forsyth, Mo.; Jacqueline Ramirez of Hot Springs, Ark.; and Janet Gaytan of St. Charles; sister, Elizabeth Stanton of Tinley Park; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-greatgrandchild.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, James Leon Siler and Pauline Siler Smith; husband, Robert Crusing Sr.; sister, Patsy Prince; and son, Brian Crusing.

RICHARD R. EPPLEY Born: Jan. 20, 1969 Died: March 5, 2014 CORTLAND – Richard R. (Rick) Eppley, 45, of Cortland, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at Kishwaukee Hospital.

Recovery is everywhere.

He was born Jan. 20, 1969, in Elgin. The son of Gordon and Sara (Halterman) Eppley. He married Trisha Gabl on May 1, 2005, in Geneva.

Rick worked at Winkler Tree Service in Bellwood for over five years. Rick enjoyed fishing, playing Scrabble and card games along with watching movies and listening to music. He was a giving person and volunteered his time at Hope Haven and helped out at St. Mary’s School in Sycamore.

Survivors include his wife,

Trisha; three children, Vanessa, Brandon and Rylee; his mother, Sara Warner; three siblings, Carlie (Jeff), Michael (Renee) and Jon (Juley); his mother-in-law, Melody Pikey; three sisters-in-law, Trynne Pikey, Tara and Tammy Gabl; aunt and uncle, Xris Halterman and Robin (Linda) Halterman; and many other aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.

ALVIN JAMES SCHUMAN Born: May 27, 1927 Died: March 4, 2014 NORTH AURORA – Alvin James Schuman, 86, of North Aurora, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, surrounded by his family.

He was born May 27, 1927, in Elgin, the son of William and Alvina (Lange) Schuman.

Al served in the U.S. Army as a 612th quartermaster. He was employed by Burgess Norton in Geneva for 42 years. Al was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Geneva. He served 24 years as a volunteer fireman for the Geneva Fire Department and 23 years as a Boy Scout troop leader for Troop 53 in Geneva. Some of Al’s fondest memories include camping and fishing.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 65 years, Rose (Bradley); his sons, Steve (Karen) of Coeur d’Alene of Idaho, Dennis of Elburn and Tom (Dee) of Batavia; his grandchildren, Matt (Kristie), Eleanor and Marion Schuman; his great-grandchildren, Hunter Funk, Riley, Matthew, Taylor and Cody Schuman; and his nieces and nephews.

After graduating from Geneva

High School in 1965, Buddy became a member of the carpenters’ union.

He was a car enthusiast and a member of the Kane County Car Club.

He especially loved old cars and enjoyed putting model cars together. Buddy loved people and enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his children, Noel (Jara) of Maple Park and Tamara (David) Velazquez of Louisville, Colo.; grandchildren, Dalton Stewart and Briseis Velazquez; Noel and Tamara’s mother, Pam Cross of St. Charles; and many dear nieces, nephews and friends.

ENEVA – U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, acknowledged Friday that heroin addiction is in epic proportions and requires a coordinated effort to create a framework for effective prevention, treatment and continuing evaluation.

Speaking to a room of more than 60 officials from Kane, McHenry, DeKalb, DuPage and Lake counties Friday at a Community Leadership Forum on Heroin Prevention at the Kane County Government Center in Geneva, Hultgren said it was time for an action plan.

“Heroin is truly dangerous.

It’s a very complex problem” Hultgren said. “Today is not a regular get-together. ... We need to identify new collaborations and share resources among each other [and] find out what is working.”

The keynote speaker was Capt. Jeffrey Coady, the regional administrator for the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services, and moderator was Kathie Kane-Willis, director of the Illinois Consortium on Drug Policy at Roosevelt University.

“When we look at heroin use throughout our region, we need best practices, not only to inform people in this district, but throughout the region and the state,” Coady said.

Kane-Willis said research was showing a larger connection between prescription drug use and heroin use.

“Many of them – 80 percent – are transitioning from opiates,” that are prescribed, Kane-Willis said. “We need to promote a strategic and goal-oriented solution to the heroin-opioid crisis. Prevention is primary, treatment is secondary and overdose prevention is tertiary.”

Kane-Willis said more professions need to be represented in the framework of those working together, such as pharmacists and professional associations.

“Everyone has a role to play here,” she said.

Among the ideas each group came up with after brainstorming included more awareness, more treatment options and more beds available for treatment.

“Drug companies should provide support for this because they are providing the drugs to the patients,” said Barb Jeffers, the Kane County Health Department executive director. “They should have a role in prevention.”

Allison Johnsen, a behavioral health specialist with Cadence Health, said money is a

barrier to treatment.

“Insurance companies are running how we provide care,” Johnsen said, clarifying that she was speaking as herself and not as a representative of Cadence. “And when you have good insurance, what you get for treatment is not enough to help effectively, according to models for recovery.”

Jeff Hunt, interim executive director of the Robert Crown Center, said people should be looking at social media and leveraging it to get information out there to youth, changing the language from “addiction” to “disease” to re-

duce the stigma.

Overdose treatment is another critical component, Hunt said, adding that every police and fire responder should have Narcan, a drug that reverses the effects of an opiate overdose.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin said funding for treatment is a big barrier.

“When you’re talking about heroin, it’s the most difficult drug there is and it takes years and years for recovery,” Berlin said. “Most treatment facilities are 21 or 30 days, and then they kick you out the door.

That’s nowhere even close to

treating a heroin addiction.”

Addicts who go to prison or jail have said it was their first step to getting clean, Berlin said.

“Obviously, there is a tremendous cost to that, and as prosecutors, we don’t want to be putting drug addicts in jail,” Berlin said.

Hultgren said his office would keep in touch with the participants to keep building on what they started in the forum.

Chris Hadley of Geneva, a retired nurse, said she came to the forum as the mother of a son who died of a heroin overdose in 2010.

“It’s taken me three years to be able to get to a point where I feel I can give back in whatever capacity they might need,” Hadley said. “To talk to kids or other parents. ... In whatever way I can, I would like to help.”

Cathy Villwock of Geneva said she came to the forum as the mother of a heroin-addicted son.

“They’re using the ‘h-word’ so I hope this is the start of many more of these meetings to come,” she said. “Looking around the room, I am very impressed with the representation.”

One aspect that was not discussed was how the Affordable Care Act was now providing coverage for addiction – previously an uninsurable disease – causing parents to use up their savings and retirement money to pay for treatment.

“I don’t think many people realize that component of the Affordable Care Act for folks that struggle with the disease of addiction is going to save an awful lot of lives,” Villwock said. “It’s going to provide them with much-needed resources and help.”

The crossing was closed as of Friday afternoon. Crews hope to reopen the area before the evening rush Monday.

Detour signs will be posted, directing motorists heading north to

continue on First Street (Route 31), west on Fulton Street and resume north on Third Street. The detour will be reversed for motorists heading south on Third Street.

With the barricades being set along the tracks, downtown patrons will be able to frequent restaurants, shops and the downtown parking deck, according to the release. Commuters who utilize the parking lots on the south side of the tracks also will have pedestrian access to the Metra Station during construction.

Worried about a dog?

I’m calling about the doggie day care that’s going in on Route 64 in St. Charles. The owner of the apartment complex across the street is worried about the noise coming from this facility with the dogs barking. There’s enough noise coming from the traffic, the cars and the car dealerships across the street, with their speakers. And you’re worried about a dog barking.

Stretching their dollars I’m calling in regards to the caller who complained that teachers get paid 12 months out of the year. They don’t. They actually get paid for the time that they work. They can choose to get that stretched out over 12 months or get it in 10 months.

They’re not being paid for that

time. They are stretching their dollars out. It has nothing to do with getting paid. If you have a certain amount of salary, and you decide you wanted to get it over 12 months, that’s fine. If you decide you want to be done in June, that’s fine, too. Your salary is your salary, no matter how you divide it up. And it doesn’t matter that we’re not working in the summer. That is money we already earned during the regular school year. You think teachers are paid a lot? No. Maybe the superintendents and the administration. Not the teachers.

We spend thousands of dollars going to college and still are paying back student loans. If you read this, thank a teacher. You couldn’t do it without them. You couldn’t be a doctor or a lawyer or any other high profession, without your teachers – elementary, middle school, high school or college level. You are educated because of them.

Watching all levels of government in Kane County is so upsetting. No level of government seems to care or appreciate that many citizens of Kane County are struggling financially and need their real estate taxes and other governmental fees and taxes reduced. We need to vote them all out of office. The days of spending and increasing budgets need to end now. How about a novel concept of actually reducing spending, and not just by 1 percent or 2 percent. Five percent raises to Kane County employees? Really? Those of us in the real world of private industry and business can only dream of 5 percent raises. We are lucky to even have a job.

“She developed a tremor, so it was very difficult to write, but she could sit down at the piano and her fingers were steady as could be,” said Vern Oie of St. Charles.

Friends and colleagues said Grotberg usually was connected in some way to music, and her efforts allowed others in St. Charles

to embrace performing.

Grotberg, a former Batavia resident, died Feb. 21 in Geneva. She was 93.

Grotberg was the force behind starting a stringed Elizabeth instrument Jean program in Grotberg 1967 and later an orchestra program in St. Charles Unit School District 303, said Ron Koeppl, retired St. Charles East High School drama director.

Memorial service A memorial service for Elizabeth Jean Grotberg will be held at 3:30 p.m. March 22 at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. on the same day.

Grotberg used to travel around to the different schools until the district hired more staff, then she became the pit director for Koeppl at St. Charles East.

Koeppl remembers her as

warm and supportive with the students.

To Grotberg’s credit, Koeppl said, many students stayed with their string instruments and continued playing as they got older. She made performing fun and interesting for them, he said.

Grotberg also was involved in the Playmakers, a Geneva-based community theater group in the 1940s and 1950s.

There, she met her second husband, John Grotberg, as well as Oie and his wife, Sharon, of St. Charles.

“Jean was like my sister; we were extremely close,” Sharon Oie said. “We had some marvelous times and great laughs together.”

The Oies would visit Grotberg when she and John moved to Washington, D.C., when he became a congressman.

Grotberg ended up playing at First Lady luncheons during different administrations and other receptions.

“She was a true musician,” Koeppl said. “She loved music, and she wanted to share it with everybody.”

Fox Valley offers free, supportive counseling and referrals to community resources.

It is looking for empathic individuals with good communication skills to participate in its 10 week Crisis Line training program.

Classes start March 18.

They will take place at The Association for Individual Development’s Behavioral Health site located at 1230 N. Highland Ave. in Aurora.

Aiston DUI case to get new judge

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A new judge will be assigned to the case of former St. Charles economic development director Chris Aiston, who was charged by the Geneva Police Department for driving under the influence of alcohol after a crash that took place Jan. 22.

During a hearing Friday, Kane County Judge Robert Morrow recused himself from the case.

“I know Mr. Aiston, and I don’t feel comfortable delivering any decisions [on the case],” Morrow said. “I have to recuse myself.”

After the hearing, Aiston’s attorney, Kenneth Johnson, said that Aiston and Morrow “have been at different social functions together.”

Johnson said he believes Aiston will be cleared of the charges.

“There could be a medical issue involved,” Johnson said. “I’m confident that when this is all said and done, he’ll be found not guilty.”

A status hearing on the case is set for March 19.

Aiston left his St. Charles post in July 2013 after having been in that role since 2009.

The Batavia City Council in August voted to hire Aiston as an independent contractor

for economic development services. He is being paid an annual retainer of $88,000.

His arrest occurred at 11:21 p.m. Jan. 22 in the 1500 block of East State Street. He also was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving too fast for conditions.

According to the accident report, Aiston was driving west in the curb lane in the 1500 block of East Chris Aiston State Street, approaching Kirk Road, when he attempted to stop but slid on the slush on the road and rear-ended another car, causing that car to rear end a third car.

This is Aiston’s third DUI arrest. He was convicted of DUI for a 1986 offense in DuPage County and in 2000 for an offense in DeKalb County, according to Illinois Secretary of State spokesman Dave Druker. His driver’s license was later reinstated in both cases.

Aiston’s license has been suspended until March 9, 2015, because he refused to take a Breathalyzer test after the Jan. 22 incident.

“That’s an automatic oneyear suspension,” Druker said.

Sometimes it takes several generations to realize just what we’ve done to our planet, and even more to figure out how to make it right again.

Wow. Those are some pretty deep thoughts, huh? Not the usual sort of banter you’d expect in a Good Natured column. What do you suppose got into my head this week?

we had a visitor at Hickory Knolls, noted author Joel Greenberg. His latest book, “A Feathered River Across the Sky: The Passenger Pigeon’s Flight to Extinction,” documents how humans – over the course of about 30 years – managed to knock one of the most populous species on earth into absolute oblivion.

As Joel recounted to a crowd of about 60 people, no one alive today remembers the great clouds of passenger pigeons that would darken the skies and whitewash entire towns as they flew overhead.

The birds’ legacy remains, though, in things like old family recipes (or “receipts”) for pigeon pie, and in names like Pigeon River and Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

So many birds, leaving so

lion or even a billion birds flew in, in clouds that stretched for miles, they would consume much of the mast, leaving very little for other woodland creatures. Like Peromyscus leucopus, the white-footed mouse.

When those great flocks of birds quit showing up, those mice found themselves with a newly abundant food source.

Over time, it is speculated, their populations grew to the large numbers we now have today.

White-footed mice are a key host in the life cycle of Ixodes scapularis, the blacklegged, or deer, tick. And deer ticks, we’ve come to learn, are important vectors of the Lyme disease.

Eliminate a species, and, 100 years later, we have an illness that has affected over 200,000 people in the eastern United States in the last 10 years alone, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This is just one example of one connection, of one extinct species to one still living. That

“When we try to pick out anything by itself we find that it is bound fast, by a thousand invisible cords that cannot be broken, to everything in the universe.”

This John Muir quote – one that is in fact often misquoted – has been both a blessing and a curse for all naturalists who have come along since he first scrawled it in his personal journal in 1869.

The statement is a blessing because it justifies why naturalists do what we do. Working as interpreters of the natural world, our universal goal is to make people see that they, we, all of us together, cannot exist separately from the nature around us. Every action we take has a reaction, either positive or negative, among the plants, animals, fungi and other kingdoms of life among which we exist.

But it’s also a curse because, try as the naturalists do to educate, interpret and explain, most people just don’t get it.

The problem, as I see it, is that as humans, we are handicapped by our own success. We live just about everywhere in the world, dominating every ecosystem, and boast lifespans of eight decades or more. We also tend to think pretty highly of ourselves, touting our complex brains and our abilities to use reason and logic to solve problems.

If we have an issue with nuisance plants or animals, we take steps to “get rid” of them and get on with our lives.

If there are no immediate repercussions then, as far as

many messes ... surely the people of the mid-1800s found it inconceivable that one day they would be gone. But sure enough, after enough shooting, netting and trapping had occurred, the world found itself down to one, lonely passenger pigeon: Martha. She died in a cage at the Cincinnati Zoo on Sept. 1, 1914.

As Joel explained, we’ve now had 100 years to contemplate the passing of the passenger pigeon, and to deal with the consequences.

Well, neither could I. So I asked Joel. His answer – which he freely admits is based on guesswork, since no one ever studied passenger pigeons while they were alive – may surprise you.

Proposed raises require careful consideration Salary raises for highly deserving employees can be justified on a case-by-case basis, provided the money in the budget is there to support the increases.

However, the manner in which Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen is seeking to award 5 percent raises for numerous directors within the county draws some concerns.

The County Board next week will consider 5 percent salary raises for five directors: Public Health Director

Barb Jeffers, Emergency Management Director Donald Bryant, Supervisor of Assessments Mark Armstrong, Human Resource Management Director Sheila McCraven and Finance Director Joe Onzick.

Increases for four more directors are expected to be considered in April.

We do not doubt the county has some talented managers, but nine directors performing at a high enough level to command raises in such a compact time period

seems excessive.

Lauzen contends the raises are justified to bring the directors’ salaries more in line with their counterparts in nearby counties, and thereby the raises would provide an incentive for them to remain in Kane County. But attempting to keep up with other counties that might be operating under different circumstances can be a slippery slope.

Lauzen said the net impact of the raises will be only about $10,000 since the county

has saved $49,000 by restructuring staff. But re-allocating that money toward raises certainly is not the only worthwhile potential use for the savings – other options should be considered as part of an overall discussion about what, if anything, should be done with the extra funds. It also is early in the year, and the county’s budget picture can change, as Coroner Rob Russell can attest after a leaking morgue freezer required repairs of about $3,500 late last year.

Supporting raises for deserving personnel is a reasonable position, but attempting to shame those who have qualms – as Lauzen did last month, saying, “We can’t send bad signals in motions and votes” – is no way to foster an open-minded debate.

Lauzen and his allies should not be surprised to see a degree of skepticism with this many raises on the table in this economy. As someone who ran on a fiscally conservative platform, he should embrace the debate.

Marmion senior Johnny Jimenez recently won his fourth straight IHSA wrestling state title. The St. Charles resident goes down among the most accomplished wrestlers in state history.

The same weekend Jimenez returned to his familiar spot atop the podium at the University of Illinois, Geneva freshman Claire Rose Ginsberg claimed the allaround girls gymnastics state championship in Palatine.

A senior going out on top, and a freshman beginning her career with an early flash of brilliance. The present – and future – of the Tri-Cities sports scene is worth saluting.

NORMAL – Geneva girls basketball players Sidney Santos, Morgan Seberger and Grace Loberg entered the media room with coach Sarah Meadows on Friday night to the sight of four lemon-lime Gatorade bottles resting on a table.

Until Meadows asked several minutes later whether it was OK to drink them, the bottles remained untouched.

Spoils are hard to find when you lose for the first time in nearly seven weeks, least of all when that defeat comes in an IHSA Class 4A state semifinal. Assessing the way Rolling Meadows rallied for a 51-43 victory to advance to today’s state championship, the Vikings worked to realize their season still brought another challenge in the thirdplace game.

“Right now, I’m the biggest sore loser. I hate losing,” Santos said. “But the biggest thing right now is to re-focus for [today]. Yes, it [stinks], of course we wanted this win, but we all have to change our attitudes, prepare for [today] and come and get a win together.”

Geneva (26-6), the fifth-seeded team in its sectional, had earned 14 consecutive victories before Rolling Meadows stopped the streak, bent on avenging last season’s loss to Marian Catholic in the title game.

The Vikings will face Marian at 6:30 p.m. today, while the Mustangs (29-4) follow against Whitney Young for the championship.

Rolling Meadows watched Geneva quickly recover from a six-point halftime deficit and take a 34-32 lead after three quarters. That’s about when the Mustangs’ urgency kicked into overdrive.

“We definitely cracked down on defense,” Mustangs senior guard Jackie Kemph said. “We knew that we only had eight more minutes and we wanted back in the championship.”

a 7-2 run midway through the fourth quarter. Alexis Glasgow delivered the biggest shot of the spurt, nailing a 3 with 5:40 remaining to give her team a 40-36 lead.

“Lost the rotation, she hit that big 3, then we had a couple possessions where I feel like we forced things,” Meadows said. “We didn’t take our time with the possession.”

To be sure, Glasgow secured the rebound of a missed layup on the next possession and quickly moved the ball to Kemph, who converted a layup on the other end.

Glasgow was playing with a protective mask on her face after breaking her nose during supersectionals. She adjusted nicely, scoring a game-high 18 points to join Kemph (13) and Jenny Vliet (11) in double figures.

Geneva showed its usual scrappiness in staying close with Rolling Meadows. It was heightened in the closing minutes of the first half as the Mustangs tried to build on their lead at the break.

In one sequence, Santos swatted a Kemph layup attempt before sprawling to the floor to wrestle a wouldbe rebound from the grasp of Kemph’s twin sister, Allie.

The Illinois Basketball Coaches Association announced its 2014 all-state teams Friday, and the seniors honored are invited to Illinois Wesleyan in adjacent Bloomington for a June 21 all-star game.

Batavia senior guard Liza Fruendt, the Upstate Eight Conference River Division Player of the Year, was part of the 15-member first team.

Fruendt, a Missouri State recruit, earned recognition as an Associated Press Class 4A second-team all-state selection earlier this week.

Burlington Central sophomore forward Sam Pryor was AP second-team all-state in 3A. Geneva senior guard Sidney Santos was a third-team IBCA honoree. IBCA special mention players included Batavia senior Erin Bayram, Batavia sophomore Hannah Fra-

zier, St. Charles North junior Nichole Davidson, Geneva junior Janie McCloughan and Geneva senior Morgan Seberger.

True to your school: Central nearly scored one – and a big one – for public schools by pushing Montini to the brink in Friday’s opening 3A semifinal.

The lone nonprivate school among 3A semifinalists had plenty of vocal support from its fans, but there also was a student sign that resonated.

One student held a “God Loves Us For Free” sign during warmups and in the early stages of the game before casting it aside.

In 4A, just one private school, Marian Catholic, is part of the final four.

Et cetera: Central has held opponents to an average of 33.7 points in five postseason games. ... Rolling Meadows edged Geneva in a fitness relay at the end of the first quarter of the schools’ semifinal. The 3-on-3, baseline-to-baseline competition involved students completing 20 pushups, situps and jumping jacks.

NORMAL – Burlington Central discarded the underdog tag early in Friday’s IHSA Class 3A girls basketball state semifinal against Montini.

For the rest of the afternoon, the team making its state debut matched the one that marched to a championship three-peat earlier this decade.

Central clogged Montini’s lanes to the basket, sealed out on most rebounds and racked up its share of floor burns.

When things grew especially tight, however, the Broncos harnessed their experience at Illinois State’s Redbird Arena, most recently last season’s semifinal loss.

The Rockets hope the sting of their own 34-26 defeat carries similar shelf life in coming seasons.

“Now we have the motivation to come back and beat them or whoever we face in semifinals next year. I think that was the catalyst for their speed and their pressure in the fourth quarter, and we didn’t have that,” Central junior forward Alison Colby said. “We were up for the third quarter and we were just playing to play, and they wanted it more in the end. They had to get back. They wanted revenge, basically.”

BC (28-5) will play Quincy Notre Dame for third place at 12:15 p.m. today while Montini – off to Class 4A next season – faces Joliet Catholic for the state title at 2.

The Broncos (33-2) moved into position for the later matinee tipoff time during a 38-second stretch late in the fourth quarter. Shackled by Rockets’ guard Kayla Ross for most of the day, Broncos senior and leading scorer Kateri Stone darted in for a midcourt steal and laid in her first field goal of the game to bring the Broncos within 24-23.

“I can’t say positively, but I’m pretty sure they thought they were going to come over here and steamroll us. And I think the exact opposite happened. We came an inch short of shocking the state. I don’t think anybody gave us a chance, and I’m just so proud of the way they played. Great determination, great focus by the girls. They really deserve a lot of credit.”

Central’s overflow student section backed the Rockets through it all. A chant of “WE READY FOR Y’ALL” greeted the Broncos moments after they broke downcourt with the opening tip. The first sounds of “I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN!” came a few minutes later, when Central toted a 3-2 lead into the first official’s timeout.

Shooting struggles and turnovers marred the first half as the Rockets’ team defense helped set the tone, using a mix of size and speed to contest the Broncos’ jumpers.

“Just like today, we come out and it surprises teams,” Colby said. “They’re not ready for it. They don’t expect it.”

Both sides lamented lost

chances to build bigger cushions than Montini’s 15-12 halftime edge. Several times Montini senior forward Sara Ross darted into the paint with a seemingly open lane to the basket only to find Central defenders in her path.

Rockets sophomore forward Sam Pryor, who had a game-high 11 points, sparked a 6-0 run in the first 1:37 that gave BC a lead and relative breathing room. At one point in the third quarter, she had enough time and space to look up and dribble one step to her right before connecting on a short jumper just inside the free throw line.

Things tightened up before long.

“Throughout the beginning of the game, I feel like we handled their pressure well. And then toward the end, I think they started to panic because the game was almost over,” Pryor said. “And then when they turned up the pressure, it was just a little too much for us.”

Colby followed Pryor with five points. Karlis led the Broncos with 10. Shelby Holt’s layup with 14 seconds left ended Central’s scoring drought.

“The sting of the loss is going to affect us for a little while,” Smith said, “but I know the resolve of this team and this family is going to rebound quickly and we’re going to finish strong [today.]”

“We just showed a ton of heart,” Navigato said. “We were down 11 in the fourth … and we just came back, shot our free throws, made them, and it was just an awesome victory.”

The Raiders (21-6) still had a chance to tie with a 3-pointer, but Nixon’s desperate try from just inside the half-court line bounced off the front of the rim after hitting the glass.

Navigato finished with 18 points and five rebounds. The Vikings (24-5) were able to win the battle on the boards, 33-29, in part thanks to nine rebounds by 6-7 sophomore Loudon Vollbrecht.

PLAINFIELD – For three quarters Friday night, the Bolingbrook boys basketball team was in control of the Class 4A Plainfield East Regional championship game.

But the Raiders never quite put away an underdog Geneva club and the Vikings made them pay with a tremendous 34-point fourth-quarter explosion to pull out a 66-63 victory.

The Vikings sure did their first regional championship since 1985-86 right. Next up: Wednesday’s East Aurora Sectional semifinal against West Aurora.

Geneva entered the fourth quarter trailing, 43-32, and still trailed by 11 with less than five minutes to play. But a 3-pointer from the top of the key by Chris Parrilli (14 points) started the Vikings on a 16-2 run in a span of 2:29.

“I thought we put a little

pressure with the press on them and they kind of panicked,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “When they went into panic mode, our kids capitalized on it.”

Junior guard Pace Temple scored seven of his game-high 24 points during the run and also came up with a key offensive rebound that led to an old-fashioned 3-point play by 6-foot-7 forward Mike Landi.

“We just never stopped believing and never stopped fighting,” Temple said. “I just love my guys and never had a doubt with them. I knew we had the heart. It was just a matter of getting some shots to go and getting some rebounds to pull it out.”

David’s buzzer-beater seals win for Knights

BY MATT PUTTIN editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland senior guard Drew David extended the Knights’ boys basketball season by at least one more game with a clutch signature shot.

David drilled a buzzer-beating 3 on Friday to help the host Knights past Marmion, 63-60, for the Class 3A Kaneland Regional title.

“It’s unbelievable,” David said. “This is something not many people get to do. This is something I will never forget.”

Ty Carlson led the way for the Knights (18-9) with a gamehigh 32 points, while David had 11. Jacob Esp and Jordan Glasgow each had 17 points for the Cadets (16-5).

“It was one of those games of runs,” Kaneland coach Brian Johnson Ty Carlson said. “They made a big run, we made a big run.”

David was sent to the free throw line with one minute left in the fourth Drew David quarter. David made both shots, which gave Kaneland the lead, 60-58. After an Esp shot rimmed out, Kaneland was sent back to the free throw line with 26.1 seconds left in the game.

Ryan David missed both free throws.

in a field goal with 9.8 seconds left, tying the game at 60.

As one half of the gym roared, the other half went silent, but not for very long.

Carlson made a pass to Drew David with 2.2 seconds left.

David put the shot up clean and it was nothing but net.

Kaneland had seized the game and a spot in Tuesday’s Hampshire Sectional final against Rockford Lutheran.

“It turned into a street ball game out there. Everyone was running up and down,” Drew David said. “I ran to the open spot and got the ball, and I shot it. I didn’t know if the buzzer went off or not, but then it went in. It was crazy.

Next you thing you know I am getting tackled.”

Johnson said he could not be more proud of the way his team battled. But once it came down to the last minute, David was able to help get the victory for the Knights.

“Drew came up big at the end of the game,” Johnson said. “I say it all the time, he is a four-year starter, two-year captain, an all-state football player, and you come to expect those things out of him.”

ST. CHARLES – One of the most exciting elements of the IHSA boys basketball state tournaments is the unpredictably of the results.

When the Class 4A St. Charles North Class 4A regional opened Monday, not many area fans would have thought that third-seeded St. Charles East and fourth-ranked South Elgin would square off Friday night for the regional title.

South Elgin continued its inprobable run in the tournament, coming from behind in the fourth quarter to beat the Saints, 76-62, for the championship and a berth in next week’s Elgin Sectional.

Except for a short span in the first quarter, East was out in front until a minute and a half into the fourth quarter. But mistakes down the stretch were costly.

“If you look at turnovers, rebounds and missed shots – that’s the game right there,” Saints coach Pat Wood said.

“We didn’t shoot the ball very well. I don’t know the details, but it wasn’t pretty.”

East (18-12) led by four at the end of the first quarter, 17-13, and at the half, 35-31. The Saints’ lead at the break was helped by the Storm. Jake Asquini (eight points) missed a shot, and instead of grabbing the rebound, a South Elgin defender tipped the ball in.

Preseason practice for spring sports teams got underway this week. One of the spring teams with an especially heavy dose of preseason optimism is Kaneland softball, which returns six starters and also welcomes highly regarded pitcher Angie Morrow, a Burlington Central transfer.

In this week’s Weekend Chit-chat, Knights softball coach Brian Willis talks to Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab about the effect the brutal winter could have on the start of the season, his approach to tryouts and the arrival of Morrow.

The following is an edited transcript:

What are the biggest things you look for in tryouts?

The biggest thing in tryouts is effort and willingness to want to be part of our program. We try to build more than just a softball team, we try to build a program, so we want kids who want to be part of a program, to give effort and commitment to what we’re trying to do.

How many girls do you generally like to keep on varsity?

[Around 15] … I kept a little more the last couple years because I had some

doesn’t matter. It’s more about talent and commitment to the program and the enthusiasm for softball.

What kind of bearing do you think this winter is going to have on the start of the spring season?

KANELAND SOFTBALL’S BRIAN WILLIS kids who weren’t going to play but were great for the team and great for the program. We’re going to go with a few girls less this year, so 15 is going to be my magic number.

What’s your basic philosophy on underclassmen coming up with the varsity? What kind of threshold do you have for freshmen and sophomores making a varsity team?

Well you know, sticking with that number of 15, just trying to find what I believe are the 15 most talented girls. Doesn’t matter what year they are to me. I’m just trying to find the best roster I can put together, and if a freshman is better than a senior, then at this level, and with the competitive nature of all the schools out there that we play, that’s how I select [players]. So the age

Oh, it’ll be terrible. Nobody is going to get outside.

I guess teams that have access to larger facilities have a slight advantage over the rest of us but I still don’t think you can completely simulate anything indoors unless you’re out at Rosemont or something like that. … It’s going to take everyone a little while to get going. We probably won’t see everyone’s best effort until the end of April, beginning of May, sometime halfway through their conference schedule.

Is there a certain part of the game in particular that suffers in a scenario like that?

I really think hitting suffers most because you can’t do live hitting. You can do [batting machines] all day long but that doesn’t simulate game situations.

I can hit a ground ball in a hallway, in the gymnasium, but I really can’t go into the hallway and have a girl throw live to somebody else,

I’m sure we’ll talk in more detail about the team in the coming weeks, but with Angie coming aboard and the girls you have returning, does it

feel as if this can be special group?

So far, I think so. Angie, I haven’t seen her play yet.

I know she comes in with a lot of hype and a lot of expectations from everyone outside Kaneland, ‘Oh, boy, Kaneland has Angie Morrow,’ but she still has to go out there and prove herself, and she’s willing to do that. She’s demonstrated so far she’s committed to our program. I haven’t seen any jealousy [on the team] or anything. … We have the majority of our starters back, and the past couple of seasons, we’ve played well, so I don’t anticipate much of a drop-off. I’d hope we actually elevate our game with the people we have returning and the addition of Angie.

3-point shooting woes befall Warriors

By ROSS JACOBSON rjacobson@shawmedia.com GENOA – The shooting woes that Wheaton Academy boys basketball team showed against Burlington Central returned at the worst possible moment on Friday.

After knocking down eight 3-pointers through the first three quarters of play, Wheaton Academy could only get one to fall in the fourth quarter as Sycamore did just enough down the stretch to pull out a 59-56 win over Wheaton Academy in the Class 3A Genoa-Kingston Regional final.

“We hadn’t shot it well,” Wheaton Academy coach Pete Froedden said. “We shoot 24 percent against Burlington and win and I don’t know if that’s ever happened in basketball.”

Both teams traded baskets throughout most of the first half with neither squad taking a lead larger than five in the first 16 minutes.

Wheaton Academy’s Chris Johnson came off the bench to knock down two second-quarter 3s of his own, but Devin Mottet’s spinning three-point play in the final minute put Sycamore up two at the half.

The back-and-forth tempo left the teams tied at 45 after Josh Ruggles knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner at the third-quarter buzzer.

Wheaton Academy (20-9) never led in the fourth quarter as Sycamore converted all 16 of its free-throw attempts in the contest to keep the Warriors with an arm’s distance.

Ruggles and Gordon Behr each had 16 points to lead Wheaton Academy.

Mottet led the Spartans with 16 points and five rebounds while Vinz ended with 11 and Feuerbach chipped in nine.

To teach or to test – that is the question Seems the ISAT (Illinois Standards Achievement Test) debacle being played-out in well over 70 Chicago schools has come to the suburbs.

My daughter recently was sick with a virus, and after I called to report her third straight absence from school on Tuesday, I got a call back and was told that the homework she’d requested would be sent home only every two days. (I prefer she rest completely, but the 103.5 temperature she spiked on Saturday was finally down, after yoyo-ing for days, and she decided that if she did some homework she’d rest better knowing she’d be less overwhelmed upon her return to school. She’s a seventh-grader. I let her make the call.)

“Don’t worry, there won’t be much [homework] because of ISAT’s,” a staff person at Rotolo Middle School in Batavia told me. True. Tuesday was the first day of ISAT testing, which was to be interspersed with classes through the end of the week. Holly asked if she would be expected to make-up the two tests she’d already missed, volunteering that she doesn’t wish to be pulled out of any classes to do so as she’s already missed a lot – in particular, the first two days of her new exploratory classes (i.e. electives), which began Monday with the third trimester (in her case, French and computers).

When I put her question to school staff, I was told that, like other kids who missed portions of the test, she would be pulled away from her elective class-

Numerous reports suggest that this much-maligned test will be phased-out altogether, perhaps before next year.

But that’s next year. This year, this week, in our little town, there’s at least one kid who simply wants the freedom to receive all of the education to which she’s entitled, alongside her peers.

Instead, the school plans, as per Illinois school code, to pull her out of two of her classes next week to make up the missed tests.

Though her father and I have philosophical and practical concerns about the efficacy of and methodology behind standardized testing in general, I’m embarrassed to admit that we’ve yet to stir the pot on the subject. Until now.

We’re not alone.

Debates have been raging about high-stakes standardized tests in general, and now the ISAT’s in particular, so much so that the teachers at one Chicago school (Maria Saucedo Scholastic Academy) recently unanimously

voted to refuse to administer the ISAT to their students, citing their refusal to waste students’ valuable class time with another “destructive” test.

Wow. Holly returned to school on Wednesday. We didn’t make a fuss about her being tested the remainder of the week, as, like other kids at this tender age, she prefers merely to do what her peers are doing and not be singled out, at school, as one who is making a fuss; but I made it clear to school officials that they do not have her father’s or my blessing to pull her out of any class to test her next week. We were told she would be.

“We have a legal obligation to test,” said Laurie Fiorenza, vice principal of Curriculum and Instruction at Rotolo.

“I thought you had a legal obligation to teach,” I replied, truly stunned at the hard line I was hearing. “I’m disappointed. Here we are,” I said, “faced with a choice – to test or to teach. What’s it going to be? What’s your priority?” I asked.

“I don’t have an answer for you,” Fiorenza replied. Schools perceive that they are legally obligated to administer this test. But are students legally obligated to take it?

“Students who enter the building will be tested,” Fiorenza stated. She explained that students will be directed from their exploratory classes to the testing center. And if they refuse?

Sounds simple in theory, but the reality of how the brain works is complicated.

In any case, “We cannot force them to use the pencil,” admitted Rotolo Principal Stephen Maciejewski. If a student refuses to remain for the entire test session, he added, they would risk some sort of discipline.

Fiorenza and Maciejewski each reported that this is the first time that this question has been put to them by a parent.

To their credit, after some discussion, they offered to proctor the two missed tests before or after school, next week. I nixed the before-school offer, and the after-school option didn’t sit well with my daughter. For one thing, she has two neighbor dogs to care for every day after school. Moreover, she sees staying after to make up these tests as an “out-of-the-norm” thing that kids in trouble must do, and doesn’t wish to do this. I get it. It’s her call.

“What would you do?” she asked me after I explained her options to either make up the test during class time or after school. “Well, that’s a tough one,” I told her. “What 46-year-old me would do might be very different from what 13-year-old me might do. Plus, you’re not me. You’re you. I can tell you what I think I’d do, but I will be proud of you, no matter what.”

How negative, positive thoughts can affect our personal reality

to make new connections that will affect our future behaviors.

When we are presented with a stimulus through one or more of our senses, our brain begins firing off impulses to determine how we have felt and responded in the past, and ultimately how we will respond to this new event in the present. This happens in a split second allowing us to react quickly, if needed.

Let’s use an example of how this process can affect our relationships with others.

Think about a time when you have been in the presence of someone that you don’t particularly like. Say that you have allowed yourself to think or say negative things about or directly to this person.

Though I really wish BPS would muscle-up, examine its guts and take a stand against this particular test – or at least share some of Holly’s burden and risk whatever consequences they fear they might face in not forcing her to finish the tests (rumors schools would lose funding if they don’t test every student in attendance or meet certain result standards are unfounded, according

They risk violating the school code, and, perhaps, their jobs, if they stray from the script.

But who better to take a stand alongside their students?

Holly has my support.

test booklet – if she picks up a pencil at all – but “That’s not me,” she said.

I am so proud. Taking a stand, and knowing who she is is activism enough for a seventh-grader.

Future relationships can be tainted by negative thought connections in brain • PERCEPTION Continued from page 29 Your brain believes what it hears you say or think, and stores the information for later use.

With each subsequent thought, statement or action, you reinforce what your brain believes, and in turn, your negative reaction to this person intensifies.

The more negative infor-

mation in, the less patient and respectful you are, and the relationship is ultimately damaged.

It’s no wonder that we find ourselves not able to tolerate something (i.e. our job) or someone (i.e. our spouse) after repeatedly allowing ourselves to think negatively.

Our brain goes one step further by making presumptions and further comparisons with the information we have inputted (i.e. “if

he’s had a bad experience with this person … I’m going to assume that he probably won’t like or trust these other people”).

Now, not only is the one relationship ruined, but also future relationships are tainted by the negative thought patterns and connections made in our brain.

One way to ensure that our relationships stay healthy is to make sure that our thoughts, words and actions

are positive. Our brain will have positive data in which to make its connections.

Positive connections = positive reactions. Perceiving life from this healthy place allows us to feel compassion for others. Word of caution – compassion does not mean complacency or compliance.

If you are in an abusive relationship, all the compassion in the world will not assure your happiness or safety.

Caring for others starts with caring for ourselves.

The Washington Post When astronomer Carl Sagan’s landmark PBS series “Cosmos” first aired in the fall of 1980, the Voyager 1 spacecraft was flying past Saturn and its moons, sending back astonishing images of worlds never seen up close.

Some 33 years later, both Sagan and Voyager 1 (and its mate, Voyager 2) have left the realm of the reachable. He died in 1996, and, sooner rather than later, we’ll lose the faint communications from the resilient Voyagers as they travel into interstellar space.

As just about everyone knows, each craft bears a human greatest-hits disc of our languages, music and understanding of numbers, among other assorted audio-visual samples of Earth’s inhabitants. The thought of anyone or anything ever finding and playing the disc inspires great wonder; just as much, the thought of our little gizmos floating off forever into eternity brings on a chilling sense of loneliness.

To both soothe and stoke those feelings, “Cosmos” is back Sunday night (airing on Fox and then repeating on Monday nights on the National Geographic Channel). It’s a 13-episode remake/update lovingly shepherded

by Sagan’s widow, Ann Druyan, who worked on the original series, and hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, a worthy heir to Sagan’s legacy, even if he doesn’t quite possess Sagan’s natural ability to captivate viewers.

Though only one episode was made available for review, this new “Cosmos” arrives just when we seem to need it most. Hardly a day goes by where the news feed doesn’t produce some freshly galling example of intellectual backsliding, with age-old fights resuming over science textbooks and religious intrusions on education and governing.

To borrow that Max von Sydow line from Woody Allen’s “Hannah and Her Sisters”: If Sagan returned to Earth on his interstellar Ship of the Imagination today, he might never stop throwing up. He’d see evidence of climate change.

He read polls that find nearly half of Americans don’t buy evolution. He’d see creationist museums and theme parks.

This 2014 “Cosmos” has its work cut out for it, to say the least, in a far different context than Sagan’s series did.

In the first episode of “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey,” airing March 9, host Neil deGrasse Tyson walks across imagery of a cosmological calendar, in which all of time is compressed into a year-at-a-glance calendar. by generations of searchers strictly adhering to a simple set of rules,” Tyson tells viewers in a carefully but beautifully phrased invitation to have an open mind. “Test ideas by experiment and observation; build on those ideas that pass the test; reject the ones that fail; follow the evidence wherever it leads and question everything. Accept these terms and the cosmos is yours.” (Reject these terms and you might wind up sitting on an Adam and Eve roller-coaster ride around our 6,000-year-old planet.)

Happily and even nostalgically, “Cosmos” orbits high above all this noise.

It begins much like Sagan’s original did, with Tyson stepping aboard a sleek Ship of the Imagination for a primer on the size of the observable universe. The series takes full advantage of the leaps in computer-generated effects since 1980 (thanks again to some science) as Tyson journeys ’round the sun and past the planets, then out past Neptune and the “tens of thousands” of planet-ish bits and pieces on the fringe – of which, pathetically, “Pluto is one.”

In the new “Cosmos,” we have Tyson telling us about the Oort Cloud and the particular band of the Milky Way’s spirals where our sun becomes just one of so very many; beyond that, there is the “local group” of galaxies nearest ours; beyond that, the Virgo supercluster of galaxies; beyond that, eventually, the

limits of what we currently understand to be our universe.

Beyond even that, Tyson hypothesizes, our universe might just be a teeny-tiny bubble, one of many universes in a multiverse. (Pause here to remember where the ’80s “Cosmos” played best: dorm rooms, where minds were easily blown and Oort clouds were frequent.)

“Feeling a little small?” Tyson asks as we head back to our blue marble.

“Well, in the context of the cosmos, we are small.”

That humbling experience of “Cosmos,” then and now, is precisely what offends some people. The wonder of it, the beauty of it, the enormity of it – with nary a mention of the belief in a God who made all of it. The nerve! “You, me, everyone – we are made of star stuff,” Tyson informs us, secure in the knowledge of the table of elements.

This random insignificance still strikes a note of heresy for many, but “Cosmos” doesn’t try to skirt the fact that much remains unknown. “We still don’t know how life got started,” he says. “[It’s] one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of science.”

I’m a very good student, active in school activities and teach Sunday school at our church. I’ve never been in trouble, and I’m not involved in drugs, alcohol or tobacco. I am also proud to say that I’m a virgin and have no plans to become sexually active.

Andrew is a nice guy with a great personality.

He’s popular at school and gives the outward appearance that he is a “lady’s man,” but he really isn’t. He only gets average grades and, at times, is the class clown.

Abdominal aneurysm shows no symptoms until it bursts Dear Doctor K: What is an abdominal aortic aneurysm? How is it treated?

Dear Reader: An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is an abnormal swelling in the aorta, the body’s largest artery. It occurs in the part of the aorta between the bottom of the chest and the pelvis.

Most aortic aneurysms come from atherosclerosis. In atherosclerosis, bad LDL cholesterol sticks to the inside wall of the blood vessel, forming plaques that weaken the artery wall. The constant pounding of blood through the aorta may cause the weakened walls to bulge. This bulge is called an aneurysm. (I’ve put an illustration of an AAA on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Why is an AAA a problem?

Because it can burst. The larger the AAA, the more likely it is to burst. When that happens, blood suddenly spills into the abdomen and blood pressure falls. The massive internal bleeding can be fatal.

The scary thing about an AAA is that it usually doesn’t cause any symptoms until it ruptures. It’s a ticking time bomb. Most AAAs are discovered during routine physical exams or on X-rays for unrelated illnesses.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff When an aneurysm is identified, treatment depends mostly on its size. Smaller aneurysms may be monitored with frequent ultrasound tests. These tests check that the aneurysm is not getting larger.

Surgery is almost always recommended for aneurysms larger than 5.5 centimeters (cm) in diameter. An aneurysm larger than 6.5 cm almost always requires emergency surgery to repair the problem.

Surgeons have two options to repair AAAs. The traditional method is abdominal surgery: the damaged section of the aorta is cut away and replaced with a plastic patch.

A newer surgical method called endovascular surgery is less invasive. A special tube called a catheter is threaded into an artery (usually in the groin) and the tip of the tube is pushed up to the site of the aneurysm. Wrapped around the tube is another cylinder called a graft or a stent. The

graft, made of artificial materials, is somewhat longer than the length of the aneurysm.

The doctor who has placed the graft at the site of the aneurysm can then expand the graft until it reaches the wall of the aorta. Now the aorta at the site of the aneurysm has a new, stronger wall.

The pressure of blood with each heartbeat is on the strong new wall, and not on the wall that was weakened by the aneurysm.

AAAs often result from atherosclerosis. So the same steps that reduce your risk of heart disease can also reduce your risk of an AAA: not smoking, lowering high cholesterol, controlling blood pressure, controlling blood sugar if you have diabetes, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

If you’re a man over 65 who is or has been a smoker, I recommend you talk to your doctor about getting checked out for an AAA. It could save your life.

In yesterday’s deal, declarer had to establish his side suit before drawing trumps in order to make his contract. That is typically the case, but there are always exceptions to the rules, which is one of the main reasons bridge retains its popularity.

In today’s deal, South is in four spades. West leads the club king. How should declarer continue after ruffing the third round of clubs?

When North raised spades, South re-evaluated. He had 15 high-card points and three short-suit points, two for the singleton heart and one for the doubleton club. That gave a total of 18 points. Also, his excellent diamond suit was a plus value.

Hence South’s jump to game.

South needs to find trumps 3-2, but that still gives him three top losers: one spade and two clubs. He must establish and run his diamond suit. Here, though, if he plays on that suit first, he will unluckily fail. After cashing his diamond ace and king, he ruffs a diamond in the dummy. However, East overruffs from only two trumps and declarer loses two spade tricks.

South should start with two rounds of trumps. Then he cashes his top diamonds and ruffs a diamond. Finally, he returns to his hand with his carefully conserved heart ace and plays out winning diamonds. West may ruff whenever he pleases, but declarer still has one trump left to ruff another club.

Did you notice that dummy’s heart king is a red-card herring?

Discarding a diamond from hand would not help South to get home.
