t occurred to me during the final minutes and seconds of the IHSA Class 3A regional game between Aurora Central Catholic and Marmion Academy at Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora – as the score got within two or three points and the lead traded hands a couple of times

– that everyone in that gym had sacrificed for these final moments.

Years of daily practices, late games and traveling to gyms throughout the area usually can put a lot of strain on parents, coaches and players.

Geneva resident Lisa Adair, 46, was at Bill Cho’s United Taekwondo Center in St. Charles when she answered 12 questions for the Kane County Chronicle’s Al Lagattolla.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in California.

What brought you here? My husband was transferred for his work. We’ve been here almost five years now.

What do you do at Bill Cho’s? I am the enrollment director. I pretty much do whatever he needs. I’ve been working in the office for two years.

Are you also a student? I am a second-degree black belt student.

Were you always into taekwondo?

When we first moved here, I brought my son here to try it. My son was doing classes for about six months, and Grandmaster Cho said, ‘You can do this, too.’

How long did it take you to become a black belt? Two years So you don’t have to be a kid to come

in? I’m a 46-year-old grandmother. There is plenty of room for everybody, all different skill levels. … We have students in wheelchairs. We have students who have suffered a stroke.

What was your first job? My most interesting job was as a bakery manager in Oregon.

Do you have a favorite charity? Geneva Women’s Club Do you have any words of wisdom? In taekwondo, if you’re not falling, you’re not trying hard enough.

What is your favorite local restaurant?

The Gratto in downtown Geneva What is an interesting factoid about yourself? In high school, I took welding. I actually built a trailer.

Kathleen King’s sister takes stand at Geneva murder trial

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Kristine Kuester said she and her sister, Kathleen King, had a close relationship.

“She was my best friend,” Kuester said, her voice trembling while on a witness stand Thursday.

Kuester was the final witness called during the fourth day of Shadwick King’s trial at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles Township.

Shadwick King was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in the July 6 death of his wife, Kathleen.

Kuester said she made plans on July 5 with her then-fiancé and the Kings to go visit the women’s grandmother on July

6. Instead, she received a Facebook message on the morning of July 6 from Shadwick King asking for the cellphone number of her father, Kurt Kuester.

“I thought it was strange.

I’ve never received a Facebook message from the defendant,” Kuester said in court Thursday.

When Kuester called her sister’s phone, a Geneva police detective answered it and told her Kathleen King was dead.

She then called her father, Kurt Kuester, and then went to his Elk Grove Village home where the Kings’ three sons had spent the night. Shadwick King was there, along with Elk Grove Village police.

Kuester said Shadwick King’s demeanor on July 6 was “flat,” but his attorney, Kane

County Public Defender Kelli Childress, referenced an Elk Grove Village police report that described him as flushed and breathing heavily.

Although Shadwick King was not under arrest, he agreed to let Elk Grove police drive him to the Geneva Police Department for questioning, Elk Grove officer Angela Garza said.

Garza, responding to various questions in court from the prosecution and defense, said Shadwick King asked how his wife died, and Garza later confirmed that Shadwick King did not ask to see his dead wife.

ness stand for more than three hours between Wednesday and Thursday recounting her July 7, 2014, autopsy of Kathleen King for the prosecution and defense.

Kalelkar said bruises under Kathleen King’s jaw and chin viewable on the courtroom monitors were consistent with some type of neck compression but not falling on railroad tracks.

The trial is scheduled to continue this morning with more testimony from Kristine Kuester.

‘WOMEN WHO DID SO MUCH’ ‘Forgotten’ history tells of overcoming obstacles, obscurity

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com A suffragette-era dress on a mannequin in the window of the St. Charles History Museum illustrates the 75-year battle for women’s voting rights.

But it also calls attention to the current status of women and acknowledges the future of how women’s history will be told.

“Unfortunately, women tend to get forgotten in history,” said Alison Costanzo, director of the St. Charles History Museum. “So what is so great about Women’s History Month is that it highlights all these fantastic women who did so much. Women’s History Month in March is all about that.”

Costanzo said the museum will have displays of St. Charles women in history, such as Amelia Anderson, the first St. Charles public school nurse, who raised money for students’ medical and dental services in 1919.

The museum is cosponsoring a Brown Bag Lunch program with the St. Charles Public Library called “Fascinating Women of History: Bette Davis” at noon March 17, featuring Leslie Goddard as Bette Davis. The library is at 1 S. Sixth Ave., St. Charles.

The St. Charles museum and other groups in the Fox Valley are promoting women’s history on several fronts.

For years, men had been writing letters and trying to get [a new depot built], but it took a bunch of women to get it done in 1892.”

The brick train depot was built on Third Street in 1893 to replace a structure that was an eyesore, according to the city’s history. First, the women wrote to the president of the Northwestern Railroad to ask for a new building. And when they were ignored, several went to Chicago to call on him personally, Emma said, citing “Geneva, Illinois, A History of Its Times and Places” written by volunteers and published by the Geneva Library District in 1977.

The new depot stood until 1959, when it was torn down, according to the city’s history.

Women’s groups in Geneva also organized the first public kindergarten, as well as a form of local relief for the needy. Those involved led the way for the public library building, raised money to plant more than 600 elm trees on the parkways and raffled a quilt to pay for a chain to keep cows out of the West Side Cemetery, Emma said, according

to the city’s history.

The organizing of the Geneva Improvement Association in 1890 also illustrates attitudes about women, according to the book of Geneva’s history. The women themselves did not think it was proper for a woman to be president of the group. Mayor Dennis Hogan asked that the officers for next year be women, and Julia Plato Harvey became the first woman in Geneva to serve as president of an organization with men and women as members.

Emma said a section in the museum’s new gallery features women’s contributions.

“That is what makes Women’s History Month so important – because they did not get the recognition they deserved,” Emma said. “The more research I do, the women are the ones who made it happen, especially for Geneva.”

St. Charles resident Kay Catlin keeps a record of women’s history all year – not just in March – in the form of 22 signatures in a collection of significant women in her baby boomer generation. These include Condoleeza Rice’s signature on a baseball, Barbara Walter’s signature on stationery from the Waldorf Astoria, Hillary Clinton’s on a page

from her high school yearbook, and Maya Angelou’s on one of her poems, Catlin said.

Each is framed, and all are available for display by organizations and groups, such as libraries or history museums, for a free-will offering by calling 630-476-1128, she said.

“These are all women who made history in my lifetime,” Catlin said.

Women’s History Month should be of particular interest to young women, so they know how far society has come in expanding rights and opportunities to women, Catlin said.

“I was in college during the Vietnam War at Western Illinois University,” Catlin said. “We had hours – or curfews – where we had to be in at a certain time. And we had a dress code. You had to dress for dinner, and you could not wear slacks to class. It was like that everywhere.”

Then, protests of the war and other institutions during the 1960s changed society, she said.

“Young people take it for granted,” Catlin said. “This signature collection is a starting point for a lot of discussion of how things have changed and how brave some of these women were.”

They also were asked if the school district should reinstate all-day kindergarten.

Knautz said she believes allday kindergarten should be an option.

Gabriel said the school board would have to look at

the cost of doing so.

“It would cost us nearly $1 million a year,” he said.

Both Olache and Rechenmacher said they would have to study the issue more.

“We need to communicate with the community and see,”

Rechenmacher said.

They also were asked about merit pay for teachers and administrators. Dremel said she was against merit pay for teachers.

“It is at odds with their vocation,” she said.

However, Dremel said she supported merit pay for administrators.

The forum also was supposed to feature the two candidates running for the 1st Ward seat on the Batavia City Council. In the race, Carl Dinwiddie is running against 1st Ward Alderman Carl Fischer. Fischer did not attend the forum.

Dinwiddie was given the opportunity to give a statement at the forum.

“I want to continue to give back to the community,” said Dinwiddie, a resident of Batavia for 28 years. “I’m all about the residents.”

In October, Fischer was appointed to fill an empty seat on the City Council after the resignation of 1st Ward Alderman Garran Sparks. Dinwiddie also applied for the post.

St. Charles businesses pass tobacco compliance checks KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Almost three dozen St. Charles businesses recently passed an inspection that tested their compliance with tobacco laws, according to a St. Charles Police Department news release.

With the help of two teens, ages 16 and 17, police on Feb. 25 conducted the compliance checks on all 32 businesses licensed to sell tobacco products in the city, according to the release.

None of the businesses sold tobacco products to the teens, who were described as “spe-

cial agents” in the operation, the release states.

The inspections were the second of three annual events conducted in partnership with the Illinois Liquor Commission through the annual “Kids Can’t Buy ’Em Here” tobacco enforcement financial grant program, according to

the release.

The release indicates the St. Charles Police Department has been awarded this grant and has conducted the required inspections every year since the program’s inception in 2004.

The goal is to educate tobacco retailers and to ensure

that each is in compliance with state and local laws. Retailers are provided with educational material and state law signage each year to assist in the initiative.

The last compliance inspections were conducted on Nov. 24 and also yielded no violations.

BATAVIA – How much the Batavia School Board acts independently from the administration of Batavia School District 101 was an issue raised during Thursday’s candidate forum hosted by the League of Women Voters of Central Kane County.

Eight candidates are running for three seats on the Batavia School Board in the April election.

Candidates include former Batavia High School social studies teacher John Dryden, Batavia School Board President Cathy Dremel, board member Melanie Impastato, and Ron Rechenmacher, William “Bill” Gabriel, Ellen Knautz, Christopher Lowe and Michelle Olache.

“Everything the school board knows is brought to them by the senior administration,” Dryden said during the forum. “They can only act on the information that the senior administration brings them.”

Impastato defended the school board’s decisions.

“We are not just a rubber stamp for the administration or an extension of the administration,” she said.

ST. CHARLES – Members of the St. Charles Kiwanis Club will serve as the grand marshals for the 16th annual St. Patrick’s Parade, which will be at 2 p.m. March 14 in downtown St. Charles.

St. Charles Kiwanians will walk and ride in a float near the front of the parade.

Kiwanis International is celebrating 100 years of service in 2015.

The St. Charles club, established in 1964, is made up of nearly 80 members, according to a news release.

St. Charles Kiwanians volunteer regularly in the Electric Christmas and St. Patrick’s parades, the release stated.

They are bell ringers for The Salvation Army every November and December, volunteers for the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association’s “Day in the Park” project at Pottawatomie Park and volunteer monthly at Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva.

The parade will feature Irish dancers, Irish music, school groups, bands, preschools, service clubs and an array of floats.

The event is expected to draw up to 10,000 people from around the area to watch and participate in the parade.

In addition to the parade, the St. Charles Veterinary Clinic is sponsoring a Deck out Your Lucky Dog Contest, and decorated dogs will be invited to walk in the parade.

GENEVA – With a potential $4 million revenue shortfall on the horizon, Kane County leaders are taking steps to protect the county’s financial health.

Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick has told County Board members that, if approved, Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed budget would result in a $1.2 million shortfall of state income tax revenue for this fiscal year and a $2.8 million shortfall for fiscal 2016.

The Executive Committee on Wednesday supported a plan that would funnel a portion of the 2014 surplus to the emergency fund to cover the potential loss.

Onzick proposed moving $2 million of the $4.6 million surplus in the general fund to the emergency fund, bringing

its balance from $2 million to $4 million.

The emergency reserve fund was established last year with $2 million of the 2013 $9.7 million surplus. At that time, Onzick said those funds would be used during severe economic events, such as the Great Recession or to fund an emergency expenditure.

The rest of the 2014 surplus would be spread across three other funds, Onzick said.

The health insurance fund would get $900,000 to restore the $1.6 million reserve that was partially depleted in 2014; the capital fund would get $1.2 million for future projects; and the IMRF fund would get $500,000 to fund an additional $500,000 payment to IMRF to further reduce the county’s unfunded liability.

The County Board is expected to act on the allocations Tuesday.

Tuesday last day to register to vote for April election KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Kane County Clerk John Cunningham reminds Kane County residents that Tuesday is the last day to register to vote for the April 7 consolidated election.

The consolidated election will involve all of Kane County. The Kane County Clerk’s Office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

In addition, most libraries, municipal and township offices in Kane County accept registrations, according to a news release. Grace-period registration for the consolidated election will be available in the Kane County Clerk’s office starting Wednesday and running until April 4.

solidated election will begin March 23 and run through April 4. The Kane County Clerk’s Voter Registration Office is in Building B at the Kane County Government Center, 719 South Batavia Ave., (Route 31), Geneva.

To register, a person must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old on or before the date of the next election, a resident of the precinct for at least 30 days before the election and provide two forms of identification, one of which shows a current name and address.

Oberweis reintroducing Senate Bill 1780 SUGAR GROVE – State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, is renewing his efforts to allow

consumers to buy a car on Sunday in Illinois for the first time in 32 years, according to a news release.

The 25th District senator has introduced Senate Bill 1780 to repeal the 32-year prohibition that has prevented Illinois consumers from buying cars on Sundays. He filed similar legislation in December 2013, which was allowed a “subject-matter-only” committee hearing in the Senate, the release stated.

Oberweis also introduced legislation that would allow religious choice in business decisions.

Senate Bill 1706 would allow auto dealers to sell cars on Sundays if the dealer is a person who observes a religious day of worship other than Sunday.

Those dealers then could be closed on their day of worship, so they would still be open only six days a week. This is similar to legislation that was approved in Wisconsin.

This March is National Problem Gambling Awareness Month, and I would like to encourage anyone who gambles to keep track of their wins and loses. And, if the loses add up to gambling debt, it’s time to seek professional help.

Common signs of a problem gambler often include lying to your partner about where you’ve been and how you’ve spent your money; lost sleep because of gambling stress and anxiety; reducing time one spends with family and work to gamble; feeling guilty about gambling; and trying to cut back in gambling without success.

Gambling disorders are treatable.

Look to France to fix U.S. baby bust I have suggested the U.S. should help the millennial generation make the transition out of youthful poverty by forgiving some of their mountainous student debt. One positive effect of that bailout, I have argued, would be to boost American fertility rates, which have fallen since 2007. I think the difficulty of raising a family in the U.S. is a problem that needs a more comprehensive solution.

In general, having a fertility rate of around 2.1 is optimal. That’s because 2.1 children per woman is the level where a population sustains itself. The closer you get to replacement fertility, the less you have to worry about either a population explosion or a collapse.

Right now, most developed countries are dealing with the latter problem, a development that threatens their pension systems and raises the number of dependents each worker has to support.

The U.S., until recently, bucked this trend, for two main reasons. The first is we had high fertility rates among Hispanic immigrants. The second is we had high teen pregnancy for a rich country. Both of these factors now are disappearing. So, now we seem to be facing the same aging issue that is be-

deviling the rest of the developed world.

It’s worth noting that, since the 2007-09 recession, the fertility rates of rich countries such as France, Germany, Japan and the U.K. actually have risen, while that of the U.S. has fallen by more than 11 percent.

What can we do about it?

Most policies that try to raise fertility fail. Exhorting people to have more children has little effect, and paying them doesn’t seem to do much better.

These policies also smack of government interference in people’s personal lives, which Americans are not alone in despising.

But a few rich countries have managed to buck the trend, and have achieved fertility rates that are close to replacement level. The most important of these countries is France. According to the World Bank, French fertility rates are at 2.01, compared with 1.88 for the U.S. What is France’s secret sauce?

France, by helping parents with the costs of child rearing, might be reaping the benefit both in higher fertility and in increased female labor force participation.

For one thing, French parents get

paid parental leave from work. The amount of paid leave actually increases as you have more children. The law gives women more leave than men (defying France’s stereotype as a gender-neutral country), but paternal leave is substantial, as well.

The U.S., in contrast, has no paid parental leave, only unpaid.

France also has abundant child care. The government has sponsored a large number of options for child care services, including public day care, subsidized private day care, part-time nannies and company day care. In the U.S., in contrast, child care services are sporadic.

Real pro-family policies will raise both the fertility rate and the female labor force participation rate. President Barack Obama’s plan, which he sketched out in his recent State of the Union address, is a start. But to really make life easier for American families, we might want to look to the French model.

armion 182-pounder Nathan Traxler won the final bout of his junior wrestling season by forfeit, a passive ending to an otherwise action-packed and unbeaten run against foes from Illinois.

“It’s a little bit of a letdown because you had to train those extra few days for really nothing, you know,” Traxler said. “It’s also a little bit nice because you can just relax and support your team and watch them. It’s both.”

A week after climbing the podium upon capturing a Class 3A individual title in Champaign, Traxler was unable to unleash his aggressiveness during Saturday’s team dual state quarterfinal in Bloomington.

Traxler, a St. Charles resident and the Kane County Chronicle Wrestler of the Year, won’t have to idle for long. He begins training for freestyle club season in two weeks, aiming to repeat a cycle that helped spawn so much prep success in 2014-15.

Traxler is a product of Campton Hills-based SCN Youth Wrestling, but also has worked with Naperville’s Overtime School of Wrestling since middle school.

In 2014, he competed at 195 for most spring and summer tournaments, hardly a stretch considering his Marmion history. Traxler is a three-year starter at 182 for the Cadets, growing into that weight class as he did his 6-foot-2 frame.

As a freshman, he filled the lineup spot out of necessity despite hovering around 165 pounds for most

of the season. The experience allowed Traxler to gain seasoning as well as comfort with an assertive style bent on tight technique and attacking opponents’ legs from various positions.

When he defeated longtime training partner Tyler Johnson, a Lockport senior who took fourth at 195 in Champaign last month, he sensed something clicking.

And beamed.

“I beat him in a tournament that I never really expected to beat him, and that really boosted my confidence,” Traxler said. “That showed me I don’t have anything holding me back in a tough match, so why not just attack and make sure I do what I need to do.”

Fourth in Class 3A as a sophomore, Traxler derived further motivation from a Cadets mat room brimming with ambitious teammates he had known since his youth, largely via SCN.

To be sure, the road bridging Traxler’s 35-9 finish as a sophomore and a 43-2 junior season featured plenty of Riley DeMoss. Primed for his own breakthrough after missing his sophomore season with a torn hip labrum, DeMoss frequently sparred with his pal, Traxler, en route to a title at 170.

“We’ve been wrestling together since we were in third or fourth grade,” DeMoss said. “We just love getting each other better.”

If there’s been one constant for Traxler in that nearly decade-long span, it’s this: “He’s even-keeled the whole way through,” Cadets co-coach Ryan Cumbee said.

It’s apparent very little bothers Traxler, whose cellphone voicemail greeting sounds like it was recorded before he even knew what a takedown was.

Saints’ vengeance tour continues East looks to avenge Feb. 5 regular-season loss vs. Geneva

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The last time the St. Charles East boys basketball team visited Geneva, the most-hyped matchup of the regular season fizzled in a hurry.

Geneva seemingly delivered an early knockout blow to East on Feb. 5, building a shocking, 21-point halftime lead that expanded to 25 early in the fourth quarter before the Saints unleashed a frenzied comeback attempt.

East junior Evan DiLeonardi’s whirlwind energy in the final quarter helped the Saints pull within four points late before Geneva regrouped for a 75-63 win, splitting the regular-season series between the eventual Upstate Eight Conference River co-champions.

The Saints’ obvious starting point toward a more satisfying outcome in tonight’s Class 4A Geneva Regional championship game against the Vikings (26-3) is a sturdier beginning.

DiLeonardi, coming off a terrific performance in Wednesday’s regional semifinal win against St. Charles North, intends to bring his considerable motor to the court much more quickly this time.

“I feel like I can play harder than I did in the first three quarters the whole game,” DiLeonardi said. “It’s all about momentum in the fourth quarter. If we come out strong and start playing like that the whole game, I could have four quarters like that, (Cole) Gentry could have four quarters like that. Our whole team could. We’d be pretty hard to beat then.”

East coach Pat Woods relishes the chance for the Saints (24-3) to make amends for their only, true clunker of

the season – at least for three quarters.

“My thought is pretty simple,” Woods said after Wednesday’s win. “We were able to avenge one of our three losses [Wednesday], beating North.

Fortunately, we get a chance to avenge a second of our three losses on Friday night.”

The teams bring a combined record of 50-6 to the floor, and both have played excellent basketball down the stretch. Geneva had won 16 straight games before dropping its regular-season finale at Larkin, while East rolled through late-season, nonconference tests against quality foes such as Evanston and Riverside-Brookfield before beating rival North for a third time in four tries.

The depth of the Geneva Regional has been much discussed in recent weeks – all five teams brought winning records to the party – but in the end, it’s top-seeded Geneva against second-seeded East.

Arguments could have been made on both sides over which team deserved the top seed.

Tonight, it’ll be settled on the court in front of what figures to be a superb crowd.

“Rivalry game, we’re going to be ready, they’re going to be ready,” Gentry said. “It’s their home court, so it’s going to be a battle, but we’re going to [prepare on Thursday] … 7 o’clock Friday night, we’ll be ready.”

Fusion fundraiser: The fundraising-for-goodwill effort continues for a group of Tri-Cities girls volleyball players.

Eric Duffett keeps a regular pulse on his alma mater, Geneva, and its girls basketball program, yet there still is one hypothetical that gives him trouble.

Does he think the Vikings will pull for New Trier, the team that eliminated Geneva in supersectionals with Duffett on the bench as a Trevians assistant, at this weekend’s Class 4A state final four?

“I hope so. I hope so,” Duffett said. “I know this one hurts, but I feel like I have a good relationship with everybody there. If it can’t be them, I think they’ll be rooting for us.”

Anecdotal evidence supported the former claim before Monday’s 4A Conant Supersectional. Duffett greeted his one-time boss, former Vikings coach Gina Nolan, as well as his former colleague and fourth-year Geneva coach Sarah Meadows.

He waved hello to Geneva principal Tom Rogers, whose daughter, Dori, he once coached, as well as a few other parents he knows well.

“It was different,” Duffett said. “I think some people get caught up a little bit, and it’s like you’ve got to prove yourself against where you used to be, but I thought this was the one team I wanted to play, because that meant we both had a great run in the playoffs so far.”

A 2003 Geneva graduate in his third season at New Trier, Duffett served as a Vikings volunteer assistant in 2010-11 before spending one season at Metea Valley.

By GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com MESA, Ariz. – As if this Cubs’ spring training camp wasn’t already overflowing with high-upside guys trying to tap into their potential, Cubs manager Joe Maddon added Edwin Jackson on his prospects list Thursday.

“It’s rare that a guy that’s 30 years old can still have the label of potential attached to his abilities,” Maddon said.

“You’d think that it’s arrived at that point – in fact, Edwin Jackson that all of it’s arrived. But it’s not all arrived with him yet.”

Hasn’t arrived? That’s a piece of luggage that’s been lost for two years, since Jackson got to Chicago with $52 million in his carry-on.

Jackson, 31, was Baseball America’s No. 4-ranked prospect in 2004, an All-Star with Detroit in 2009, owner of a no-hitter with Arizona in 2010 and a World Series champion with St. Louis in 2011 – a right-hander who has continued to tantalize with impressive stuff and durability while playing for eight different teams in his career.

As he enters his third season with the Cubs, he’s reunited with the manager who had him the longest (2006 to 2008) and trying to resurrect a career that sank to depths that made him statistically the worst starting pitcher in the majors the past two seasons.

Designed to be a bridge guy for a rebuilding pitching staff when he signed his four-year deal with the Cubs, he instead

pitched his way off that staff by late last season and enters camp without a role on a team that looks like it has passed him by.

“I just have to worry about myself and do everything possible to do everything that I have to do to help the team win ballgames,” he said. “Where I’ll be, we’ll see where it ends up.

I’m not really concerned about anything right now. I feel good.

I feel ready to go. Well see what happens after that.”

Theoretically, Jackson is in the scrum for the lone job opening on the starting staff. But unless Travis Wood is traded or gets hurt this spring, the feeling among most team officials is Wood will win that job – and Wood looked the part with a six-up, six-down performance in his spring debut Thursday.

Jackson, a popular teammate in the clubhouse since his arrival, is scheduled for his first spring start Monday against San Diego. And Maddon talks like a guy who thinks Jackson has a chance to become key part of the staff (or a guy trying to drive up a player’s value).

“He probably outthinks himself sometimes or gets uncertain with himself sometimes,” said Maddon, who used Jackson out of the bullpen during Tampa Bay’s postseason run to World Series in 2008, with uneven results. “A lot of guys that are in his position that haven’t arrived at their ability level yet, there’s probably that point where they just talk to themselves too much. I really would like to just see him go out there and play and not worry about mechanics, or the number of pitches or sequencing, or whatever. Just go out there and pitch, and permit your abilities to take over.”

ADVICE American families of the future are multiracial Dear Abby: My husband and I are both Caucasian. Recently, we adopted a beautiful mixedrace baby girl. She’s Vietnamese, African-American and Hispanic.

She is not even 4 months old, and already we have experienced some negative comments from strangers.

Where we live is progressive and open-minded, and I’m not so much concerned about our neighborhood or schools. But I’m no dummy. I know we’re going to encounter people who have “questions” or unwarranted “opinions.”

I’m not trying to educate those who choose to remain ignorant, nor reason with the unreasonable, or even explain our family and our choices. Heart murmur often not a cause for concern Dear Doctor K: What is a heart murmur? How is it treated?

Dear Reader: A heart murmur is a sound made by turbulent blood flow within the heart. (Think whitewater rapids as opposed to a gently flowing river.) Your doctor hears this sound with a stethoscope.

Most often, a murmur occurs in a healthy heart. Sometimes, people have murmurs just with a normal flow of blood through their hearts. In other cases, a heart murmur may indicate a problem.

Murmurs may be caused by a structural abnormality of a heart valve. Heart valves normally cause blood to be pumped in only one direction. When, for example, blood is being pulled in the wrong direction by gravity, the valve keeps that from happening.

Heart murmurs also may be due to an abnormal connection between two parts of the heart. Some causes of heart murmurs include: • A tight or leaky heart valve.

Heart valves control blood flow from the heart’s upper chambers to its lower chambers, and from the lower chambers out to the rest of the body. A murmur can be heard if a valve becomes narrow, interfering with the outflow of blood. A murmur also can be heard if a leak causes blood to flow

• Congenital heart problems.

Some children are born with abnormalities in the way the heart and the blood vessels attached to the heart are built. These abnormalities often cause murmurs.

• Endocarditis. Endocarditis occurs when an infection of the heart valves causes them to become damaged. This can cause a tight or a leaky heart valve, which then causes a murmur.

Heart murmurs often do not cause symptoms. However, when the heart damage that causes the murmur also causes the heart to malfunction, symptoms occur.

They can include shortness of breath, light-headedness, rapid heartbeat and chest pain.

Murmurs that do not cause symptoms do not require treatment, though your doctor should monitor them regularly.

When treatment is required, it varies based on the cause of the murmur.

• A tight or leaky heart valve.

Medications can treat symptoms.

In severe cases, a diseased valve may be surgically corrected or replaced with an artificial valve.

• Mitral valve prolapse.

Palpitations may be treated with medications. In rare, severe cases, the abnormal valve is repaired or replaced surgically.

• Congenital heart problems.

Severe cases need to be corrected surgically.

• Endocarditis. Bacterial endocarditis is treated with several weeks of intravenous antibiotics.

Sometimes, the infected heart valve must be replaced.

One of the most important things that a doctor does during a physical examination is listen for a heart murmur – and to distinguish those that are not a problem (most of them) from those that are.

Look for unattached man Dr. Wallace: I’m 20 and work with a guy who is 22. I really like this guy and I’ve told him so, but he says he has no interest in me and that he is engaged to get married in June.

I have since found out that this guy and his fiancee are really not meant for each other because they fight a lot.

After West leads the heart queen, how should declarer plan the play? And what should he do differently if the spade ace and spade two are exchanged between the North and South hands?

In the given auction, North’s three-diamond rebid was game-invitational. (If South had the spade ace as well, he would have rebid two spades, then the last two bids would have been the same.)

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade, two hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. The obvious line for two more tricks is to play on diamonds, where only a 3-2 split is needed (a priori, 67.8 percent). To attack clubs requires a 3-3 break (a priori, 35.53 percent). And if the spade ace is in the South hand, that is the right line. Declarer should take the first trick and duck (lose) a diamond.

However, with the spade ace in the dummy, South can get home if either diamonds are 3-2 or clubs are 3-3, which raises the a priori odds to 79.25 percent.

Declarer, after taking trick one, should cash dummy’s top diamonds. If the suit splits 3-2, he plays a third round and coasts home with an overtrick. But when diamonds break badly, South turns to clubs and, with this layout, makes his contract.

If your children do not play bridge, teach them immediately!
