Former Urban Grille location in Geneva generating interest

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Efforts continue to find a new restaurant to replace the former Urban Grille at 524 W. State St. in downtown Geneva, which closed in late December.

“We are trying to get somebody else in there,” said Jake Finley of Conlon Commercial, which is marketing the space for the new owners of the building that had housed Urban Grille. Geneva developer Joe Stanton previously owned the building, but he sold it in January.

The building also houses the Playhouse 38 theatre, which is operated by the Geneva Park District. Urban Grille had opened in 2007 and was known for its designyour-own burgers. Efforts to reach the owners of Urban Grille were not successful.

“They have not been open as far as we know since New Year’s Eve,” Finley said. “I

“Some of the interested parties are other restaurateurs in Geneva,” Finley said.

“We haven’t come to any agreement with anyone. We want to make sure that it is the right operator and that it is a good fit.”

He did not name the restaurants that have presented proposals. A few of the concepts that have been proposed for the space include a sushi restaurant, a restaurant that serves southern comfort food and a family restaurant with an emphasis on ribs, Finley said.

College’s Blizzard Theatre, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin, will feature a series of “Fantastical Banquet” performances by the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra on March 16.

The concerts will celebrate the magic of Shakespeare’s language in opera, song and music.

Petting zoo owner charged with animal cruelty

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON TOWNSHIP – The Mini Zoo Crew in Hampshire Township kept followers in touch with happenings posted on its Facebook page, from a Family Fun Night at a preschool to detailing rescue efforts in Iowa to save mistreated horses and ponies.

The Facebook page, www. facebook.com/TheMiniZooCrew, and the business, which police confirmed is run by Stacy Fiebelkorn of Elgin, also details the care of its animals in a January posting: “All the animals have been tucked in Stacy the barn trying Fiebelkorn to stay warm but are ready to get back out and play in the snow.”

But now Fiebelkorn, 34, of the 1000 block of Borden Drive in Elgin, has been charged with cruel treatment of animals, in which seven were found dead – including a horse and its fetus – and 94 others were found in need of food and water, police said.

Kane County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Fiebelkorn on Wednesday. She was charged with one count of a violation of an owner’s duty to provide adequate food, shelter and water and vet care to prevent suffering, and one count of cruelty to animals, both misdemeanors.

Fiebelkorn’s arrest stems from a report of dead animals on two farms in rural Kane County, one on Beith Road in Campton Township near Maple Park where the dead mare and its fetus were found, police said.

Kane County Animal Control staff served a search warrant on a farm at 44W222 Route 20, in Hampshire Township, where Fiebelkorn kept additional animals. Animal control staff found more dead and severely ill animals, and lack of adequate food, police said, adding that all the water designated for the animals was frozen.

Kane County Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler said Fiebelkorn was being evicted from the Beith Road property and had moved most of the animals to the Route 20 property.

“The water bowl for the chickens, ducks and a turkey was one big frozen chunk of ice,” Gengler said. “There are so many animals – goats, rabbits, donkeys, alpacas, mini-horses.”

The dead animals will be sent to the University of Illinois for a necropsy to determine their cause of death, Gengler said.

Fiebelkorn posted $150 bail on $1,500 bond for the two misdemeanors. Court date information was not available.

Fiebelkorn did not return a voice mail message left at her business phone number.

“I’ve been out here for three days, and I broke down. ... it’s not fair,” Sauceda said of the animals’ condition.

“I’m super proud of my staff.

They’re here every night and early in the morning. I’m glad we are able to step in and impound them and all the livestock.”

The mare and its fetus appears to have died from “red sacking” where the placenta prematurely separates from the uterus, Sauceda said, most likely caused by inadequate veterinary care and moldy hay.

“The placenta came out first,” Sauceda said. “Then the baby falls out, and the mother dies of shock. I don’t think it was full term, but if you feed horses bad food, it will cause the baby to come out early.”

The barn on the Route 20 property is not adequate to shelter, either, he said.

“There is no room in this barn for any of these animals,” Sauceda said.

But Sauceda said his department stepped up with deliveries of fresh mold-free hay, fresh food for the rabbits and chickens, and heated water bowls for all. Sauceda said he is reaching out to rescue

GENEVA – Two Kane County Board members said Wednesday they intend to vote against the 5 percent salary increases for five directors when the matter comes before the full board next week.

Barb Wojnicki, R-Campton Hills, told the Executive Committee it is not the right time to award the raises, which would become ongoing costs and contribute to pension boosts.

“People are stunned we’re even considering this,” she said.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen’s proposal to award Public Health Director Barb Jeffers, Emergency Management Director Donald Bryant, Supervisor of Assessments Mark Armstrong, Human Resource Management Director Sheila McCraven and Finance Director Joe Onzick with 5 percent raises received backing from various standing committees last month.

Armstrong also is slated to receive a 2 percent raise because he was inadvertently excluded from an increase granted in fiscal 2013 to other directors.

The County Board is expected to vote on the proposed raises Tuesday.

Wojnicki, along with Melisa Taylor, R-Sugar Grove, indicated Wednesday they will be voting no.

Increases for four more directors are expected to be considered at the board’s April 8 meeting.

Together, the raises would total about $59,000. Because

the county saved about $49,000 through restructuring staff, the net financial impact is about $10,000, Lauzen said. He noted the spending is limited in the property tax levy freeze.

“This doesn’t cost them one penny [more],” Lauzen said of taxpayers.

Board member Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, said she is concerned the raises are being considered at the beginning of the fiscal year, when expenses are still uncertain. For example, she said, the construction costs for the sheriff’s proposed shooting range is about $1 million more than initially estimated.

“I’m afraid to keep playing Russian roulette with the budget,” Castro said.

The raises are part of an effort by Lauzen to make director salaries more comparable to those offered by other counties in the region. The theory is to protect talent and reward achievement, he has said.

“What will it cost us to replace these people?” Lauzen said.

Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, agreed that the board must weigh the cost of replacing them with the cost of the raises. He noted Kane County’s directors are among the lowest-paid in the region and said he wouldn’t want them to, at one point, feel unappreciated.

“These people run the county,” Frasz said.

Lauzen said a few residents have called him about the topic. Taylor welcomed residents to also reach out to the board member representing their district.

Shooting range plans advance to Kane board

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County Board on Tuesday is expected to act on the sheriff’s funding request for a shooting range despite one member’s proposal to put the project on hold.

Construction costs for the shooting range initially were estimated at about $1 million but bids for the project indicate costs will be closer to $2 million, leaving a $826,000 shortage.

The sheriff has said the expense could be funded by the surplus generated by housing U.S. Marshal inmates. According to agenda documents, the surplus amounted to $2.6 million in 2012 and $2.1 million in 2013.

Board member Phil Lewis, R-St. Charles, told the Executive Committee on Wednesday that he doesn’t see the urgency to build the range. He said the board should put the project on hold until after the election, as Sheriff Pat Perez is not seeking another term.

A number of issues concern him, Lewis said, noting a desire to make the range accessible to the public. Board member Kurt Kojzarek, R- Elgin, said he has strong reservations about opening the range to the public. In addition to liability issues, he said, he wouldn’t want to take business away from the private sector.

Other board members said costs likely would increase the longer they wait.

Board member John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, said this is the last project he will vote for before the county creates a comprehensive capital plan because other projects are just as important and pressing.

Lt. Ronald Grommes, who has talked about the project during other committee meetings, said the sheriff’s office intends to make a presentation to the full board next week.

Proposed pet facility advances to committee

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A pet care facility proposed for the city’s east side is one step closer to approval after some lengthy public hearings and a meeting Tuesday.

The city’s Plan Commission voted 8-0 after the hearings in favor of recommending a general amendment to the zoning ordinance to permit pet care facilities in the BL-Local Business District.

Fydoland business owner Robin Massey has applied to open a pet facility on the former Rex’s Cork and Fork property, 1317 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The proposed Fydoland would focus on dogs and include pet daycare services, pet grooming areas and exercise areas inside and outside of the facility, according to Massey’s written proposal.

She has Fydoland locations in Elgin and Huntley.

“We wanted to have a place that was safe, sanitary and convenient,” Massey said Tuesday of her business.

The commission voted 7-1 in favor of recommending a special-use permit for the pet facility. Plan Commission member Tom Pretz voted against the recommendation but did not give any reason for his decision, Plan Commission Chairman Todd Wallace said. Pretz on

The two public hearings and commission meeting Tuesday lasted about 2½ hours in all, Wallace said.

Plan commission members and residents had questions about the outdoor exercise areas proposed for the facility. Massey said she is considering modifying the outside areas. A maximum of 20 dogs would be outside at any one time, she said.

Commuters take advantage of Ashes to Go at train station

ENEVA – Once Ashley Richardson of Wayne saw the Rev. Bill Nesbit in his vestments on Wednesday, she stepped forward to receive ashes.

Nesbit was standing outside the Geneva train station to anoint commuters’ foreheads with ashes in the shape of a cross on Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the 40-day Lenten season leading up to Easter. Richardson said she received ashes she might not have gotten on her own.

“I thought it was a good opportunity – I work in the city, and I don’t have time to go [to church], so this was helpful,” she said.

Richardson was one of about 30 people Wednesday to participate in St. Charles Episcopal Church’s Ashes to Go program.

Nesbit, retired priest Bill Kruse and parishioner Katie Thomson from the church helped to distribute ashes during the morning rush hour.

This is the fourth year that the church has done the program in Geneva, Nesbit said.

Ashes to Go, which is thought to have started in St. Louis in 2007, took off in the Chicago area in 2011 after three local Episcopal congregations offered the program in 2010, according to the website www.ashestogo.org. Church officials wanted to bring their ministry out to public areas and help people observe Ash Wednesday.

“It’s nice to be a church of the world sharing a message of love, that God loves you and forgives you,” Nesbit said.

Candace Moline made sure to get her ashes outside the train station before heading to Anderson Elementary School in St. Charles, where she is a second-grade teacher. The Geneva resident said her father was one of the founding members of St. Charles Episcopal Church. She attended services there with her parents growing up, and it’s something she continues to do today.

“I think it’s really important,” Moline said of Lent. “It’s a time of introspection and rebuilding our faith.”

Moline has received her ashes through the Ashes to Go program every year the church has offered it in Geneva. St. Charles resident John DeMartino said he also participates in the program every year. He said he always is appreciative that the church is out there, especially during the Wednesday morning snowfall and 20-degree temperature.

Nesbit said the church will brave the elements when necessary to have the program.

“This is better than rain; I don’t mind this,” Nesbit said of the snow.

No dreams are ‘unlikely’ Women’s History Month and recognizing contributions in law enforcement When you see a squad car parked on the side of the road, do you look inside at the officer as you drive past?

Although women make up about 51 percent of the population, only about one in eight of those police officers sitting behind the wheel of a cruiser will be a woman.

I am one of those women.

I became an Illinois State Police trooper in March 1981.

At that time, women had only just begun to be hired as police officers throughout the country. Before that, police departments typically used women as bailiffs, jail matrons or community service officers – positions without arrest powers.

Starting in the mid- to late70s, law enforcement agencies began to see the advantages of hiring women as police officers. Women tend to excel at communications – both spoken and written. Women are generally comfortable expressing compassion and empathy to others; this is a great advantage when gently eliciting information from witnesses and victims.

Forty years ago, the critics said that women weren’t strong enough or tall enough and would end up getting hurt. They said that a woman wouldn’t be able to physically defend herself, and the male

I graduated from Illinois State University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, and I had an unlikely dream to become an Illinois state trooper. “Unlikely” because – at the time – there were few women in the state police. But I persisted.

I successfully completed the hiring and background process and went to the state police academy in Springfield for 18 weeks.

For the next 27 years, I enjoyed a diverse and very interesting career with the Illinois State Police. I worked the road as a uniformed trooper for many years.

About halfway through my career, I shifted gears and became a special agent for the ISP. I served in the Division of Internal Investigation for more than three years.

I also had an assignment at the state police crime lab in Chicago.

I worked some very special details, including the state police traffic detail for then-

vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro. I felt pride in being a very small part of this very big piece of United States history. The final five years of my career, I served as the district commander for Tollway District 15. I was the first woman commander there. Today, women regularly serve as police chiefs, sheriffs and high-ranking law enforcement executives throughout the country.

After I retired from the state police, I was honored to continue my law enforcement career as a deputy chief of police for Elgin Community College.

It is gratifying for me to serve the faculty, administrators, visitors and students – especially the students. It is our mission as a police department to keep the ECC campus as safe as we can. I enjoy speaking to the students and learning about their goals and hopes for the future. Perhaps, they can see that no dreams are “unlikely” anymore.

guidance, Madigan said that county’s state’s attorney concluded, “It is ultimately your [the clerk’s] decision as to whether or not to proceed immediately with the issuance of marriage licenses to samesex couples.”

Madigan suggested that same-sex couples ask their county clerks to issue marriage licenses, and if they refuse, they may sue.

“Even though the ruling in Lee is not binding on you, the protections guaranteed by the Constitution must exist without regard to county lines,” Madigan wrote.

“There has been a consistent stream of lower federal court decisions declaring restrictions against same-sex marriage unconstitutional.”

Madigan wrote that her office’s position is that current Illinois restrictions against same-sex marriage violate the equal protection rights that belong to all citizens under the U.S. Constitution.

Madigan suggested that same-sex couples in other counties can get a marriage license earlier than June 1, by applying for it in Cook County and be married there.

Records show Cunningham’s office issued 138 civil union licenses in 2011, 46 in 2012, 31 in 2013 and three so far in 2014.

Cunningham said he does not know how many of these were for same-sex couples because that is not a record he keeps.

GENEVA – Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham will not be issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in advance of the law going into effect June 1, regardless of the urging of Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

Madigan sent a letter to the clerk of Macon County in Decatur regarding a Feb. 21 U.S. District Court case, Lee vs. Orr, which found that restrictions are unconstitutional, allowing Cook County to issue same-sex marriage licenses before the law officially takes effect.

“Right now, I am governed by the law, and the law says June 1,” Cunningham said.

“The court order did not mention Kane County. If I issue licenses before then, it could be dangerous from a legal aspect.”

Cunningham said the Cook County case was an exception, issued because a person was dying.

“Now they’re trying to make the exception the rule,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham said he was relying on a legal opinion from Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon.

“Every law has an effective start date,” McMahon said. “The effective start date is June 1, and neither I nor the attorney general, can advance the effective date or delay that date.”

For comparison, McMahon said the concealed-carry license act became effective Jan. 1.

“I could not delay or advance it, and this is no different,” McMahon said.

The only way this could change would be through a lawsuit or if lawmakers take action, McMahon said, because of the separation of powers.

In her Tuesday letter responding to the Macon County Clerk’s request for

8OBITUARIES EDWARD J. BANKMANN JR. Died: March 5, 2014 GENEVA – Edward J. Bankmann Jr., a longtime resident of Geneva, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014. He was born in Chicago, to Edward and Lucille Bankmann.

Ed earned his undergraduate and MBA, respectively, from Loyola University and Northern Illinois University. He proudly served in the Illinois National Guard, called to active duty on multiple occasions.

Ed enjoyed a successful 40-plus-year career in real estate, and was an active member of the Geneva Rotary Club and St. Peter’s Church for 35-plus years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Mary Jean; sons, Daniel and Joseph (Elizabeth); and sister, Jan Petersen.

Trustees Pat Schuberg, Dave Gualdoni, Jeff Walters and Bill Grabarek voted against it.

Officials said the fund had been used mostly for trees, but some trustees said they were concerned that moving such a fund to the general fund might somehow cause the village to shortchange recreation as the village grows.

“We don’t have enough recreation in Elburn,” Schuberg said.

Dave Anderson stressed that “we’re not eliminating recreation. It will be there.”

He said moving the fund into the general fund was something suggested by the village’s auditors. But after the vote, he said the fund would remain separated.

ELBURN – The Elburn Village Board on Monday voted to indicate that a former police officer’s request for public safety employee benefits didn’t meet the required standards.

Village officials now will prepare written findings of fact, based on Monday’s vote, and trustees will vote on that at their next meeting at 6:45 p.m. March 17 at Elburn Village Hall, 301 E. North St., Elburn.

The retired officer, Steven Furlan, appeared with his attorney, Richard Blass, at a previous meeting in which Furlan described the incident that took place Christmas Day in 2008. During his shift, Furlan took a fall while performing a security check at Lions Park, located at 500 S. Filmore St. in Elburn.

He had said that he was checking to make certain doors and windows were

locked when he slipped and took a hard fall, and his head struck the pavement. As a result, he said, he suffered injuries that would not allow him to perform his duties. During the previous meeting, Furlan said he regarded such security checks as potential emergency situations.

Trustees at Monday’s Elburn Village Board meeting, as well as Village President Dave Anderson, voted unanimously that Furlan’s injuries were catastrophic. But the vote also was unanimous that it was not in response to an emergency, as well as that it was not suffered while he was investigating a criminal act. Those were the two criteria under which Furlan had sought benefits, and he had to meet at least one of those.

Also at Monday’s meeting, board members opted not to consolidate the village’s recreation fund into its general operating fund. Trustees agreed to consolidate several other funds into the general

Cheating’s place in education For many schools across the United States, cheating has become a dirty word.

From online plagiarism of Wikipedia to old-school peeping on another person’s paper, the matter takes on multiple forms and can occur in the richest – as well as poorest – learning communities. Rather recently, the crackdown on academic dishonesty has gained a lot of force with schools implementing strict honor codes and punishments.

Cheating is a natural evil that will keep on reinventing itself no matter the amount of administrative oversight.

Still, the question remains – why do kids cheat?

As a teacher, one must condemn the action of cheating and leave the issue at

that. As a student, however, I decided to delve into the thoughts of my peers and get their thoughts on the cheating question.

The first school of thought stands at the side of the student. Every year that passes, the standards of education seem to rise, and the enrolling classes of colleges become that much more competitive.

Failing in the academic realm of today can mean not realizing the perfect domestic American dream. I mean, who wouldn’t want a white picket fence, a sky-blue minivan and a neighbor that talks just a bit too much?

In most cases, this scenario comes into play when a normally high-achieving student realizes that he or she can no longer put up with

On the other side, the ideology of laziness prevails.

thing or two. Many have met the likes of an evildoer called Mr. Procrastination, and no one knows how to waste time better than he does.

Here’s an example – say little Jimmy just got assigned a four-page research paper on the importance of the common ground squirrel in the ecosystem. Jimmy’s brain will file that under the overflowing “Blah” file, and return to focusing on the current pressing issue – navigating a tiny bird through green pipes of death.

Fast-forward two weeks to a day before the paper is due, and Jimmy’s brain has sounded the alarm.

Not only do the words of Wikipedia seem enticing, they appear to be his last resort.

Another senior at Marmion, Matt Walz, answered the same question of cheating in a different manner: “For the most part, they’re lazy.

They don’t want to put in the effort.”

In the battle against the cheating virus, I doubt the world will find a cure. Whether the sickness originates from the school system or from the student is up in the air.

sources Committee of Geneva in conjunction with Western Avenue Elementary School’s Get Up and Grow Committee is hosting a fundraiser called Wine, Cheese, and Trees.

The reason for the initiative is that 2,800 ash trees in Geneva’s parkways will be removed over the next few years because of the emerald ash borer.

or the past several years, book lovers have had the chance to dine with their favorite authors through the popular “Dinner with the Author” series at Town House Books & Café in downtown St. Charles.

The next event will take place on Thursday, March 13, at Town House Books, 105 N. 2nd Ave., with author Brigid Pasulka. Although the 7 p.m. dinner is sold out, people are welcome to come to the reception at 6 p.m. in the Garden Room at Town House Books, where Pasulka will be signing copies of her book “The Sun and Other Stars.”

Julia Glass was one of our National Book Award-winning authors who visited. The first time she came for her book “Three Junes,” Doug took a page from the book and actually recreated the meal that was talked about in the book itself.

ES: So, how many events do you usually have a year?

DH: It varies. Sometimes we’ll have several, sometimes we’ll have just one or two.

And that’s the unique thing about it.

We like to wait for some kind of personal connection with the author, like a staff member having read a book and liked it.

We will either contact the author, or a lot of times publishers will contact us, because we kind of have a reputation of being a venue that authors really enjoy coming to. The meal is designed specifically for the book. It is kind of a loving tribute to the author and the work.

DH: It seats around 40 people. We can generally seat 40 people for the dinner, which has become very popular with book clubs. Sometimes we sell out these

“Consumers like to drink wine within three years, but we store some to really show future customers different vintages. It’s expensive and hard to wait, but the expressiveness of the wine after time is worth it.”

The wine is made from Nebbiolo grown in calcareous clay and sandy soil on a hill in the heart of Barolo. Due to the high quality of fruit, minimalism has defined the winemaking. Damilano takes a hands-off approach.

It will sit in the barrel for three years.

“We’ve discovered Cannubi is so extraordinary,” Damilano said. “We just leave it alone for three years. After that it is perfect. Spectacular.

“This is a wine that can age a long time. We look for an elegance and balance in the wine.

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East boys basketball team played uptempo, crashed the glass and successfully slowed St. Charles North’s quality backcourt.

Just about everything on East’s pregame checklist was successfully accounted for Wednesday as the Saints controlled the IHSA Class 4A regional semifinal against host North, eliminating the North Stars, 65-50.

The teams split their regular-season meetings, with North grinding out a home win in December before the Saints crushed the North Stars in a January rematch at East.

“They thought last time we played them was a fluke, so we had a chip on our shoulder,” East senior forward AJ Washington said. “We knew what we had to do. We played fast, because last time we played them here, we played slow. We played down to their level, and it didn’t work in our favor.”

The postseason window of opportunity for East is widening as the Saints advance to Friday’s regional final against South Elgin, which upset top-seeded Larkin in overtime Tuesday.

While East’s talented perimeter shooters were at it again Wednesday, the Saints (18-11) also were superior in the paint, an especially disappointing turn of events for North given East’s occasional rebounding struggles.

East junior forward Mick Vyzral had arguably his best performance of the season, scoring 17 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.

“Great time to have a career game,” East coach Pat Woods said. “He’s had double-doubles before but he was extra special tonight, I thought.”

“I think coach said every single game we won the rebounding battle, we won the game, so I just wanted to get as many rebounds as I could and play the best that I can on the boards and just in the game,” Vyzral said.

Two days after opening the postseason by blistering Streamwood for 16 3-pointers – the same number East hit in the January win against North – the Saints stayed hot early, making 4-of-6 3-pointers in the first quarter. Guards

Jake Asquini and Cole Gentry hit two each in the quarter, including Asquini’s deep 3 at the buzzer to give East a 21-11 lead.

The win was the sixth in a row for East, which led, 3320, at halftime and never was threatened thereafter. Vyzral thought playing Monday was an advantage.

“We got a win under our belt, and it was hard for North because they hadn’t played a game in five, six days, and we just played one the other day, so I think that was big for us,” Vyzral said.

North (16-10) turned in a solid season, highlighted by a memorable triple-overtime loss to Simeon in Pontiac.

The North Stars finished in a three-way tie for second place

in the Upstate Eight Conference River with East and Geneva but seemed to lose steam late in the season, and closed on a three-game skid. North coach Tom Poulin shouldered blame for not “preparing the team for the real season.”

“We had one-pass possessions,” Poulin said. “We didn’t run things all the way through. At this point in the year, the first option’s not there, especially when you’re playing St. Charles East, a conference team. At this point of the year, you need to be going to second and third options. We didn’t play well tonight.”

Vyzral’s 17 points led three Saints in double figures as Gentry (12) and Asquini (11) lent offensive support. East’s

double-digit win was all the more impressive considering the relatively quiet night for standout guard Dom Adduci (seven points), who missed most of the past two weeks with an ankle sprain.

“When you sit out 10 days and you’re not even practicing, you’re not going to just walk in and score 25 points,” Woods said. “Where I think Dom’s even gotten a ton better, he was moving the ball around great and sharing it tonight as well. Early on [in the season] I think we needed him to score, but now I think we’ve kind of grown into a team that we have a lot of people that can score. He sees that, and he’s able to distribute better.”

Junior forward Jack Callaghan had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead North.

North’s guard tandem of senior Alec Goetz (11 points) and junior Jake Ludwig (five points) both were unable to summon their usual shooting touch.

It was an emotional North locker room afterward. Those raw feelings extended to Poulin, who coached several members of North’s large senior class in consecutive seasons, football (as an assistant) and basketball.

“Every single one of them are just good people at the root, at the core,” Poulin said.

“You miss spending time with good people after you spend as much time as you do.”

According to IHSA archives, this group already marks the winningest Geneva team since coach Mel Johnson’s 1962-63 Vikings went 30-3 and earned a state tournament berth. Getting the upper hand on some slightly more recent history is the focus until further notice.

“Oh, yeah. Every day we talk about it, and in practice we’re reminded of our goal this season. That’s to get a regional,” Cook said. “So we’re fighting for it, and we hope to get it on Friday.”

PLAINFIELD – Geneva free-throw shooters toed the line to repeated chants of “CHOKE!” in the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s IHSA Class 4A Plainfield East Regional semifinal boys basketball game against the host Bengals.

The Vikings didn’t come this far to oblige.

Efficiency from the line and just about everywhere else keyed a 64-58 win and put Geneva one victory away from the program’s first regional title since 1986.

“I thought we did a great job of sticking together as a team,” Vikings junior guard/ forward Nate Navigato said.

“Even when it got really close and their fans got really into it, we did a great job of just coming together and just knowing that, ‘Hey, we have the lead.’

Maybe it’s not by much, but then we’d put together more points, get a bigger lead, and did a good job.”

Geneva (23-5) will face bulky Bolingbrook for the regional title Friday night. Vikings coach Phil Ralston lent some early sizzle to the matchup by describing much of the Raiders’ front line as “gargantuan” while suggesting they “look like they’re guys that are playing for the Bears when you see them.”

Plainfield East (19-10) offered a much different matchup, relying on its backcourt as the Vikings enjoyed a size advantage.

That moment finally will arrive this Saturday with a championship on the line.

The Red Ramblers held off a big late charge Wednesday from Chicago Hope Academy to claim a 65-59 win in the IHSA Class 1A Serena Sectional semifinals.

The win puts Mooseheart into the championship game at 8 p.m. Saturday against Chicagoland Jewish, which last year rallied t o e l i m i n a t e Mangisto Deng Mooseheart on the Rambers’ home court.

“We’ve been waiting for a year,” Mooseheart coach Ron Ahrens said.

“We’ve focused Makur Puou on things for a year, and what a good game to help us prepare. ... We have some great incentive. Our guys are looking forward to getting to the finals. We were at the game last night, and we said, ‘Hey, this is kind of what we were hoping for.’ You always want to play somebody that has beat you, and it’s a lot less things I have to do, motivation-wise.”

Ahrens would like to see a better finish from this team than he did Wednesday against Hope.

Behind a fantastic first half from Mangisto Deng, the Ramblers (25-5) had full control of the game, leading 22-6 after one quarter and 36-18 heading into halftime. Deng scored 21 of his game-high 29 points in the half.

“Everybody celebrated because we were up by a lot,” Deng said. “I told them it’s not finished yet. We couldn’t just celebrate right now. [Hope] was a good team.”

They continuously fouled the Ramblers, who were just 10 of 23 in the period and 18 of 40 in the game.

That, along with big points from Carson Hughes (17 points), a technical foul on the Ramblers for too many men on the court and having Deng and 7-foot-1 Akim Nyang foul out, helped cut the lead all the way down to 62-59 with 1:03 to play.

However, after another split of free throws, Hope’s Rickey Calvin, who to that point had scored 17 points, missed two crucial free throws to allow Mooseheart to breathe easier.

By IAN MATTHEWS MAPLE PARK – At the onset of Wednesday’s IHSA Class 3A Kaneland Regional semifinal, it looked like it would be a typical Suburban Christian Conference clash between rivals Marmion and St. Francis.

While the game featured the usual hard-nosed, gritty play from both sides, it was the uncharacteristic defensive struggles from St. Francis that helped Marmion earn a 73-57 win.

The third-seeded Cadets (16-14) used balanced scoring to move on to face Kaneland in Friday’s regional final.

“We want to cut down the nets Friday, so we did everything we could tonight,” Marmion guard Michael Sheehan said. “We have a lot of friends on that team, so it’s a fantastic rivalry. It’s just a wonderful game; the intensity is high and everyone wants to win.”

Sheehan can usually be counted on for double-digit points for Marmion, but the senior was face-guarded for most of the night. Despite scoring six points and taking only five shots, Sheehan facilitated the offense for the rest of his teammates, helping four other Cadets score in double-figures.

With Marmion clinging to a 51-44 lead with 6:05 to go, Friel was fouled by Spartans 6-foot8 big-man Adam Hart. Hart knew it was his fifth foul, and the senior voiced his displeasure, which earned him a technical foul.

After Jake Esp hit both technical foul shots, Friel made both of his attempts to help the Cadets extend their lead to 55-44.

“Corey Friel really got us started from deep; it was his best game of the year,” Marmion coach Ryan Paradise said. “He hit a big 3 at the end of the first half that really got us going and had some nice drives as well. This was his best game, and perfect timing for it.”

Before the technical foul sequence, St. Francis (1510) cut into what was a double-digit Marmion third quarter lead. Trailing 49-38 heading into the fourth, the Spartans went on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 51-44.

To Spartans coach Bob Ward, it was a lot more than that sequence that decided the game.

“We didn’t rebound and they shot the ball well. When you don’t rebound and a team is shooting the ball well, they either get close-in shots or they get the ball kicked out to a shooter,” Ward said. “It wasn’t just one guy, it was three or four guys. We really tried to key on Sheehan but doing that you give some things up, and Friel hit some really big shots.”

Glasgow scored 11 of his 16 first half points in the first quarter as Marmion led, 2216.

Along with a corner 3-pointer, Glasgow hit a number of his signature off-balance, acrobatic jumpers that somehow found the bottom of the net.

GENOA – Baskets were hard to come by Wednesday night in the second half of the IHSA Class 3A Genoa-Kingston Regional semifinal between Burlington Central and Wheaton Academy.

The two teams made a combined 12 buckets in the final 16 minutes of the game.

Wheaton Academy connected at the right time, scoring the last five baskets to rally past Central, 45-44.

The Warriors will play top-seeded Sycamore on Friday for the regional title.

The Rockets, seeded third in the regional, led, 40-33, at the start of the fourth quarter. While No. 2 seed Wheaton Academy (20-8) finally found its scoring touch, Central’s offense went cold, collecting all four of its fourth quarter points from the free throw line. A Bennett Fuzak 3-pointer from the left wing with 1:38 left in the game brought Wheaton Academy within 44-43.

The Rockets’ Reed Hunicutt tried to answer the bas-

ket with a layup but turned it over in traffic with 35 seconds left in the game. The senior guard led all scorers with 17 points.

After a timeout, the Warriors inbounded the ball and worked the clock down.

With 8.2 seconds to play, Christian Smith scored his only basket, a floater in the lane, to put his team ahead, 45-44.

“I just want to get a shot off and see what would happen,” said Smith, the son of coach Pete Froedden. “If I missed, someone else could get a rebound and a putback.”

“Was that the only time we led?” Froedden asked.

“Our kids have a lot of guts.

We played super, super tight.

We never could get any kind of rhythm. We were just fortunate to get out of here with the win.”

The Rockets (18-9) attempted two more shots in the final seconds but both attempts were blocked.

Until next time, ‘au revoir’ There are a lot of ways to say goodbye, ranging from “Parting is such sweet sorrow” to “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

You can say goodbye in hundreds of different languages, ranging from “agur” (Basque) to “xudafiz” (Azerbaijani). Many languages have several ways to say goodbye, including English – “so long,” “farewell,” “see you later,” etc. There’s about a dozen different ways to say it in German. In French, “adieu” and “au revoir” are among the options.

I took a year of French in college and I always preferred to say “au revoir,” mostly because I thought it was more fun to say.

If I recall correctly, there also was an air of finality associated with “adieu,” while “au revoir,” literally meant “see you again.”

In some languages, the same word can mean hello or goodbye, like the Italian, “ciao.”

I guess I’m rambling on about the subject of goodbyes because I can’t quite figure out how to say goodbye to you and all the other loyal readers of this column. It’s been my privilege to have done a couple of stints writing the “On Campus” column, adding up to about three years. I’ve interviewed well more than 100 local college athletes in that time and it’s been a great pleasure getting to know each and every one of them.

It’s not uncommon for people from older generations – like myself – to suggest that today’s youth are lazier than they were at their age or less moral or more self-involved, etc. But I’ve never felt that way, I think in part because of all the interviews I’ve done with young people over the years. I’m amazed at the accomplishments of so many of them. Most of the athletes featured in this column are also outstanding students, using extraordinary time-management skills to balance going to classes, practicing their sport, and studying. Remarkably, many also still find time to take part in community service activities.

Of course, some credit for the success of these young people must go to their parents, as well as other adults who shaped their lives, like their high school coaches. We’re blessed in this area with many outstanding coaches who are just as interested in helping to shape

One of my favorite memories of my time with the Kane County Chronicle was watching St. Francis volleyball coach Peg Kopec grab the PA microphone before a very important match to chastise the Spartan student section for not being as respectful to the opponent as she thought they should be. To their credit, the students were on their best behavior after that. When a Hall of Fame coach tells you to do something, you better do it.

I also want to take a moment to thank Kopec and all of the coaches I’ve pestered after games for the past eight-plus years I’ve been covering high school sports for the Chronicle.

It’s not easy to stand around and answer questions from reporters a few minutes after your team has lost a big game, but virtually without exception, the coaches from our area always have been gracious in giving their time – win or lose.

I am starting a new chapter in my journalism career as editor of The Lockport Legend newspaper, so this is my final week with the Chronicle. I’m excited about this new opportunity, but already starting to miss some of the great people I’ve come to know over the past few years, including sports editor Jay Schwab and sports reporter Kevin Druley. I’d like to thank both of them publicly for the help they have given me.

Jay’s patience and understanding under the pressure of deadlines should perhaps qualify him for sainthood.

And Kevin perhaps had even more difficult situations face him where I was concerned because every time something unexpected went wrong, it seems like it happened on his watch. So, thanks to both you guys for putting up with me.

Finally, thanks to you, the reader, for your continued interest and support in this column and your many story ideas. I couldn’t use them all, but I tried to get to as many as I could.

I don’t know if our paths will cross again, so rather than saying “goodbye,” I think for now I’ll just say, “au revoir.”

Burlington C. embraces ‘slugging it out’ mentality

kdruley@shawmedia.com Burlington Central coach Mark Smith provides a window of intrigue into this weekend’s Class 3A girls basketball tournament for a handful of entities outside Rocket Nation.

On Wednesday, the first boys coach in St. Charles North program history showed why, also invoking advice from former St. Charles East coach and AD Jerry Krieg, for whom he was an assistant.

“When you get into playoff basketball, you are really slugging it out in terms of possession by possession and half-court defense and half-court offense,” Smith said.

“We know those past few games, we would have to stop people in the half-court because those teams at that level, you’re not going to blow away.”

BC isn’t eschewing that practicality for delusions of grandeur anytime soon. Its opponent in Friday afternoon’s state semifinal at Illinois State is Montini, a perennial power that placed third last season and won three straight state titles from 2010 to 2012.

Smith and his players have acknowledged the Montini mystique while taking measures against some of the novelties of state tournament play. The team practiced Wednesday at Elgin Community College in a bid to see a bigger floor akin to the one at Redbird Arena.

Central gets a 30-minute shootaround at the arena this afternoon.

“The floor is longer and you’ve got to get as used to as you can the shooting perspective and things like that,” Smith said. “The good thing is that every team only gets a half hour. You have to adjust pretty quick.”

He’s got connections: Ashley Capotosto nearly thwarted Geneva’s run to the Class 4A state tournament five seasons ago.

On Tuesday, she texted her former high school coach to remind him of his shot at retribution: Friday’s 4A semifinal between Geneva and Rolling Meadows.

Second-year Mustangs coach Ryan Kirkorsky spent 12 seasons at Elk Grove Village before taking charge of the Mustangs, including four as head coach. One of his more memorable losses came in a 2009 sectional semifinal at Addison Trail, when the Grens pushed the then-unbeaten Vikings behind 34 points from Capotosto, a versatile forward.

Geneva also handed Kirkorsky the final loss of his Elk Grove career, winning a 2012 regional semifinal at Geneva, 55-45.

Rolling Meadows, the defending 4A state runners-up, counters with its own talent, namely point guard Jackie Kemph. Last season’s Gatorade Illinois Girls Basketball Player of the Year, the Saint Louis-bound Kemph averages a team-best 21.2 points a game.

“She really controls the tempo for us.

She can just control a game with her scoring and her passing and with her defense, too,” Kirkorsky said. “She’s obviously a big part of what we do.”

Noticing Nolan: Health concerns prompted former Geneva coach Gina Nolan to step down after the 2010-11 season, but she hasn’t strayed from the Vikings’ corner.

Nolan, a breast cancer survivor, was again on hand during Monday’s Judson Supersectional victory against Rockford Boylan.

She remains on Geneva’s Spanish faculty.

“She’s always been a huge supporter.

She sees me at school and she’ll say, ‘Good luck tonight. I’ll be there cheering you guys on,’ ” Vikings junior forward Abby Novak said. “She just wants this program to do well.”

Bus riders: Geneva and BC both are offering student pep buses to the state tournament.

Permission slips for Central’s buses were due Wednesday afternoon. Geneva still is taking sign-ups for its bus through today.

In Antarctica, it’s the call of the ice

By DAVID GRIFFIN The Washington Post “You come for the animals, but you will return for the ice,” the trip leader aboard the National Geographic/Lindblad Expeditions cruise ship Explorer told us as we began our trip to the Antarctic in December.

My wife, Kathy Moran, is a senior editor at National Geographic magazine and was invited to lecture aboard a cruise to the “white continent.” I got to tag along.

I started my career as a news photographer and have never lost my love of the craft, so I was thrilled at the opportunity. The images here are among the best I was able to capture in the nine days that we cruised, hiked and kayaked along the Antarctic Peninsula.

The ship departed out of Ushuaia on Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, and crossed the Drake Passage, renowned for seas that make fools of those who think that Dramamine, wrist acupuncture straps or ginger gum are going to make a difference. I had all forms of defense because I get queasy just looking at a boat, but they were unnecessary: We were lucky to experience the “Drake Lake.” Large rolling swells, but nothing that had me running for the ship’s railing.

Once across, we had gorgeous weather. Temperatures rarely got below 30 degrees and were warmer than much of what the East Coast was experiencing while we were away.

Penguins? There were thousands of Chinstraps, Adelies and Gentoos – enough for a lifetime. And it was spring in the Southern Hemisphere, so we were there when the first chicks of the season began to hatch.

But it was the ice, alive with the never-ceasing action of grinding, bobbing, cracking and melting, presenting nature’s most fascinating and kinetic sculptures, that enthralled me. I never tired of watching or photographing it, at all times of day. With only two to three hours of dusk (it never really got dark), it was hard to retire to the cabin. As the same trip leader temptingly warned us: “Sleep is expensive while on the continent. You can do it on the way home.”

Reading obituaries may comfort lonely heart Her mother asked Dear Abby: “Still Alive in San Diego” in a previous column said she reads the obituaries every day and feels somehow disappointed when she doesn’t see a name she recognizes. She asked if it was “weird” and you told her yes, that it seemed like a lack of empathy.

I don’t agree. What’s happening is this woman is lonely and the activity has become the hub of her day. It gives her something – sadly – to look forward to and a sense of closeness to her acquaintances when she recognizes their names.

My advice to her would be to find another way to fill the void and not obsess about the obits.

Joining a club or taking up a physical activity would allow her to meet people. Medications that affect balance can usually be substituted Dear Doctor K: You’ve mentioned that some medications affect balance. Which ones? If a drug I’m taking is affecting my balance, what can I do about it?

Dear Reader: There are enough of them that I don’t have space to mention them all. Medicines that affect balance in some people may not do so in you. In fact, most people can take medicines that can cause balance problems, without having the medicines affect their balance.

If you already have problems with balance, whenever your doctor recommends a new medicine, ask if it will affect your balance. If so, is there a better alternative?

The real concern here is falling. Falls are more likely when medicines affect not only balance but also vision, or if they impair alertness or judgment.

Some medications may damage the inner ear, which can cause temporary or permanent balance problems.

Often, it’s the sheer number of medicines, rather than a single drug, that causes problems.

Taking many medications at the same time can boost the severity and frequency of side effects. Older adults are especially vulnerable, because drugs are absorbed

Unfortunately, many of the most commonly prescribed drugs can play a role in falls. This possible side effect must be weighed against the other health benefits of the drugs. The lengthy list includes drugs from the following categories: • Antidepressant and anti-anxiety drugs • Anticholinergic/antispasmodic drugs • Antihistamines • Blood pressure drugs • Antiarrhythmics, vasodilators and digoxin (heart drugs) • Pain relievers such as opioids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) • Sedatives If you have side effects that affect your balance, vision or state of alertness, talk to your doctor. Ask him or her to review your medications. Bring all your prescription and nonprescription medications and supplements with you. Or at least bring a complete list, including dosages and

how often you take each one.

Your doctor may consider different strategies to reduce your risk of falling. These include: • Pruning the list.

• Lowering your dose.

• Switching to a different drug.

• Changing the time of day you take the drug. For example, for many people, blood pressure tends to be low early in the day.

So instead of taking a blood pressure medication first thing in the morning, your doctor might suggest taking it later in the day.

Redoubling your efforts to make lifestyle changes could also help lower the dose – or entirely eliminate – one or more drugs from your list. You may be able to take lower doses of diabetes and blood pressure drugs, for example, if you step up your exercise and eat better.

It may take trial and error for you and your doctor to find the right medicines or the right dose to achieve health benefits, while avoiding the side effects that increase your risk of falls. But it usually can be done successfully.

Dear Nameless: Teachers and their assistants are human and sometimes make mistakes. You earned an A and should be rewarded with an A. Show the teacher your test paper.

I’m sure she’ll happily correct the error and be pleased that you really earned an A. Teachers love it when students do well on tests. It’s a sign that they’ve done their job.

The bigger lesson here is that, if you are certain you’re right and an injustice has occurred, don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself.

I wonder if he tried that plan, but fell asleep on the job.

A bridge player cannot afford to sleep at the table. He should count winners and losers, and watch all of the cards as they are played.

In this deal, the problem is South’s extra loser. West leads the spade queen against three hearts. How should South proceed?

North had a textbook game-invitational limit raise, showing at least four hearts, 10-12 support points (high-card points plus short-suit points) and eight losers. South guessed well to pass.

When the dummy comes down, declarer should count his losers. Here he has one club, one heart and at least two spades. He has only seven sure winners: four hearts, two diamonds and one club.

South should play a low spade from the dummy at the first two tricks. East is bound to have the ace and might be forced to play it. Here, though, the defenders take the first three tricks. Then East shifts to a low club. What next?

Declarer has gained an eighth winner, his last spade.

But he still has five losers: three spades, one heart and one club. How can he eliminate that club loser?

South must immediately take three diamond tricks. He cashes his diamond ace, plays a diamond to dummy’s jack, and discards his club jack on the diamond king. Then declarer plays trumps and claims.
