Pub to mark final St. Patrick’s Day as McNally’s St. Charles business to be transformed into upscale tavern, eatery in April

By KARA SILVA ksilva@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – This St. Patrick’s Day will be the last for McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub in downtown St. Charles.

After 16 years in business, the Irish pub will undergo a transformation into Valley Lodge Tavern, an upscale tavern and eatery with two other locations in Wilmette and Glenview, said McNally’s and Valley Lodge Tavern owner Bill Stavrou.

Stavrou, who bought McNally’s from former owner Maurice McNally last year, said the decision to make the change was gradual.

“We didn’t have this plan from the beginning, but saw, as our other locations flourished, an opportunity to expand our brand,” said Stav-

rou, adding that Valley Lodge Tavern originally was established in 1969.

The last day McNally’s will be in business is April 4, and the space will reopen as Valley Lodge Tavern on April 14. The space will undergo a slight renovation, but “nothing extreme,” Stavrou said, because the inside of McNally’s already has a similar feel.

The new restaurant will be “very much the same as the other locations,” serving burgers, ribs and fresh seafood, but the menu will keep staple McNally’s dishes, such as the Fish and Chips and Reuben sandwich. Various McNally’s menu items also will reappear as daily specials, he said. The beer list will remain the same, while the wine list will become more upscale, featuring selections, such as

Sonoma-Cutrer chardonnay and Uppercut cabernet sauvignon from Napa Valley.

A month-long going-away party for McNally’s is currently underway, Stavrou said, so longtime customers, regulars and staff can “pay tribute to the McNally’s brand and what existed there for the last 16 years.”

McNally’s will have a week-long celebration to

commemorate its final St. Patrick’s Day. Festivities and live entertainment will kick off March 11 and run through March 17.

Property taxes, trust among issues in Batavia School Board race

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Whether Batavia School District 101 can lower property taxes was one of the issues tackled Tuesday by candidates running for the district’s school board during a taping of the Batavia Access Television show “Viewpoint.”

Eight candidates are running for three seats on the Batavia School Board in the April election. Candidates include former Batavia High School social studies teacher John Dryden, Batavia School Board President Cathy Dremel, board mem-

ber Melanie Impastato, and Ron Rechenmacher, William “Bill” Gabriel, Ellen Knautz, Christopher Lowe and Michelle Olache.

Dremel said the school board can’t focus only on lowering taxes.

“If we were just to focus on lowering taxes or maintaining spending at the cost of everything else, then our property values will end up being negatively impacted because our schools will end up being negatively impacted,” she said. “Every decision needs to be based on what is in the best interest of a public education.”

Olache, who is running as part of a slate with Rechenmacher and Gabriel, said the voters spoke “loud and clear in the fall referendum that they do not want our school district to accumulate more debt.”

“Citizens and business owners are overtaxed,” she said. Voters in November soundly defeated Batavia School District 101’s $15 million capital improvement referendum. The district wanted to issue up to $15 million

TRAFFIC TECHNOLOGY New facility will help KDOT be more proactive to traffic problems

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – The ability to monitor the county’s signalized intersections isn’t new.

Want to see how traffic is flowing on Kirk Road at Division Street on the St. Charles-Geneva border? A monitor at the Kane County Division of Transportation headquarters in Campton Hills can access the intersection’s camera feed, which has 360-degree panning and zoom capabilities.

Monitoring options are limited, however, and the camera feeds usually are active only if KDOT employees are diagnosing a problem or otherwise monitoring a location, said traffic-permit engineer Stephen Zulkowski and Kurt Nika, chief of traffic and permitting.

An upcoming expansion should change that, they said.

A groundbreaking is planned late this month for the arterial operations center, a project the KDOT officials said has been in the works – at least conceptually – since about 2006.

“Here we are ready to build,” Nika said.

Deputy Director of Transportation Tom Rickert said the arterial operations center is part of a series of incremental steps to improve traffic operations in Kane County.

Since Rickert joined the division in the late 1980s, the county has added “significantly more” signals on its highway system – the total tops 100 – and a network of fiber-optic cables has been installed in the last decade, he said.

Additionally, his colleagues said, the county has 42 active pan-tilt-zoom cameras at various intersections, and another 24 are expected to come online within the next two years.

“The future has to be something we need to look toward,” Rickert said.

The arterial operations center would have the flexibility to react to changes in traffic operation technology, they said.

“All these technologies help us better provide service,” Zulkowski said.

The arterial operations center, which will adjoin the existing KDOT facility at Burlington and Empire roads, is expected to cost about $1.65 million for construction and $400,000 for information technology systems, staff said.

About 80 percent of the total construction cost will use

CMAQ – Congestion, Mitigation and Air Quality – and STR – Surface Transportation Route – funds, the KDOT officials said. They said local funds will contribute the remaining 20 percent.

Making investments in intelligent transportation systems is a more efficient use of taxpayer dollars than making an immediate investment in additional lanes, the KDOT officials said. Pavement, they explained, is significantly more expensive than using intelligent transportation systems to accommodate higher traffic volumes with the existing lanes.

Although building completion is scheduled for Oct. 31, the

KDOT officials said the arterial operations center likely won’t be ready for use until early 2016 because of the setup of IT components and furnishings.

The facility – which will include a control room with 10 monitors for camera feeds – will allow KDOT to be more proactive than reactive, Zulkowski said.

For example, he and his colleagues said, staff will be able to see and diagnose problems, such as a malfunctioning detector in a turn lane, remotely.

Staff also will be able to implement many solutions remotely, they said.

Because three work stations also are planned, three people could, theoretically,

troubleshoot multiple issues simultaneously, the KDOT officials said. Around-the-clock monitoring isn’t a possibility yet, Rickert said, but it is anticipated that staffing a work station will be a priority during peak hours.

The center’s capabilities could have other applications, such as giving maintenance crews a way to know where to focus their efforts regarding snow removal, Zulkowski said.

Despite the arterial operation center’s potential to improve traffic operations, Rickert said motorists shouldn’t expect to see dramatic changes once the facility is in use.

Progress, he reiterated, is incremental.

Witnesses recount crime scene, evidence in Geneva murder trial 7

Two Union Pacific railroad conductors, a Geneva police detective and Geneva police officer, a Geneva Fire Department lieutenant, a paramedic and a Kane County deputy coroner all said Kathleen King, 32, appeared to be deceased when they saw her at different times after 6:30 a.m. July 6 on the southernmost Union

“I observed a patient that was not breathing ... her skin was quite pale,” said Gary Grandgeorge, a Geneva firefighter and paramedic.

Kathleen King’s 47-yearold husband, Shadwick King, was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in her July 6 death. Shadwick King was seated with his attorneys for the third day of the trial, wearing a gray short-sleeve collared shirt.

Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress repeatedly asked Dan Mongelli, a

Union Pacific engineer and conductor, about a radio message he gave mentioning that the woman – later identified as Kathleen King – might still be breathing.

Mongelli said he made the observation while still 50 to 70 feet away from the body and did not immediately clarify his breathing comment when he got closer to Kathleen King’s body.

Mongelli also said another initial radio message of his was that she appeared to be decapitated, which did not turn out to be true based on other accounts and photos taken at the scene.

Geneva police reported a few long dark hairs were found on Kathleen King’s body and collected as evidence, along with a pink iPhone that was

found upright near her body against a rail. The officers also noticed leaves and a blade of grass in her hair and found a tiny leaf fragment just above her genital area.

Dr. Mitra Kalelkar, a forensic pathologist who has performed more than 5,000 autopsies, said she observed additional hairs during an autopsy of Kathleen King on July 7. Kalelkar was described in court Wednesday as an expert witness in the field of forensic pathology.

Kalelkar said she observed two bruises on Kathleen King’s body – one underneath her chin and one underneath her jaw. She said the bruises were not consistent with someone falling down near railroad tracks.

Wednesday’s portion of the trial ended with Kalelkar announcing a potential scheduling conflict – she was asked to be at the DuPage County Courthouse at 8:30 a.m. Thursday to be called as a witness in a DuPage County homicide trial.

Assistant State’s Attorney Mark Stajdohar said he would try to resolve the conflict with the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The issue of trust also was addressed during the discussion. Dryden said professional educators in the district “feel completely disenfranchised in the decision-making process.”

“We need to bring them back and build more collaborative models,” he said.

Moon River Mingle to benefit Elderday Center

Officials said the efforts of the nonprofit agency are paying off.

“Last year, our analysis showed that we were able to keep them in their homes for an additional 14.1 months,” said Traci Eggleston, executive director for Elderday Center.

Elderday Center, which is based in the Bethany Ministry building of the Bethany Lutheran Church at 328 W. Wilson St., Batavia, provides a variety of programs, including occupational therapy, arts and crafts and nursing care.

Hot lunch is served daily, Eggleston said.

To operate its programs, the center relies on public support. Elderday will hold its Moon River Mingle fundraiser from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Eagle Brook Country Club, 2288 Fargo Blvd., Geneva.

Elderday Center, at 328 W. Wilson St., Batavia, is celebrating 25 years of providing day services to seniors and promoting independence for older adults.

This year’s goal is to raise

between $20,000 and $25,000, she said.

Elderday continues to add programs, including a caregiver support group that will start meeting this month. The

group will meet from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month at the center.

“You also have to take care of the family,” Eggleston said.

“You can’t separate one from the other. The need for support and resources for caregivers is huge.”

Darlene was involved with her children’s activities and served as a Girl Scout leader for many years.

Darlene is survived by her four children, Gail Jackson, Lynn Martin, Kevin Hinds, and Brian (Julie) Hinds; and grandchildren, Randy (Laurie) Jackson, Molly (Reto) Zehnder, Megan Jackson, Shane Johnson, Jeff Peura, Jackie (Adam) Arriaga, Jason Peura, Margaret, Eleanor, Charlotte, Ben (Colleen) and Amie Hinds; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her dog,

Peggy.

Together, the revenue losses could increase over time, resulting in a nearly $10.4 million projected deficit in 2019, according to information Onzick provided.

“The point of including the five-year forecast was to illustrate that we already have a challenge ahead of us to balance the budget without raising property tax in the face of rising operating costs and the potential 50 percent loss of state income tax revenue,” he wrote in an email.

The County Board has, however, taken steps to address the shortfall in the sheriff’s budget.

Last month, it reduced the shortfall by $225,000, and it is poised to cut the remaining $2,044,000 shortfall by $1,544,000 on Tuesday.

Members of the Executive Committee, which on Wednesday unanimously supported the proposal, noted the cuts would come out of the sheriff’s

corrections budget.

Proposed reductions are targeted for such line items as overtime, the vehicle fuel budget, the public safety vehicle budget and the salary and ben-

efits of a grant writer, which is a position Kramer has eliminated.

Member Kurt Kojzarek, R-Gilberts, said members need to be aware that the elimina-

tion of a grant writer could result in a decrease of grant revenue.

The board, he said, needs to be prepared that “this isn’t over.”

Rooms, reminiscing From the time I was 5 years old until about a month ago, I shared a room with my now seventh-grade sister, Annika.

My bed was on one side of the room; hers was on the other. We shared a closet and dresser, but we each had some storage space to ourselves.

Now, Annika and I may look alike with our blond hair and blue eyes, but our personalities and interests differ in a lot of ways. I’m a fan of solid colors and simplicity, while she’s all for the sparkles and bright patterns. I like to turn up show tunes, while she’d rather blast pop music. As you can imagine, decorating was a bit of an issue in the shared room. Not to mention, as we grew older, there was less and less space for all our possessions.

However, sharing a room wasn’t all irritation and decorating debates. I have many positive memories, as well. We would play with our American Girl dolls for hours on end when we were little, creating countless imaginative scenarios. In later years, we’d stay up late talking about whatever came to mind, often to the point where my mom would have to come in and tell us to go to sleep.

Annika and I had been begging for our own rooms for quite some time, and around the new year, our wishes were granted.

It was decided that Sadie and Lucy, my two youngest sisters, would move into the room I had previously shared with Annika.

Then, I would get Lucy’s old room and Annika would get Sadie’s. It took several days, a lot of patience, and quite a bit of muscle to make this happen.

But I’m glad to say that in the end, we pulled it off. I now officially have my own room,

It’s funny because even though I wanted my own room for so long, part of me still misses sharing. I miss late-night talks and always having someone there. I know my sister’s just down the hall, but it’s still not quite the same as having her with me all the time.

I think I learned a lot from sharing a room. I learned how to work through conflicts of every type. It taught me how to fit (most of) my possessions in a smaller space. And, most of all, it helped me bond with Annika over the course of several years.

These are the things that make me glad I spent all those years sharing a room, and the things that make the not-so-great moments worth it. Generally, I’m grateful I’ve experienced both sharing a room and having my own.

But when push comes to shove, a room is just a place. It doesn’t matter how much space it has or which decorations adorn its walls. What matters is the memories made there.

And I’m glad to say that over the course of my life so far, whether I shared a room or not, the events that took place there are what will remain with me forever.

Supreme Court’s logical route on ACA THE WASHINGTON POST In starting to examine the Affordable Care Act again on Wednesday, the Supreme Court has several logical, principled paths to avoid tearing apart a law that has slowly but surely found its footing. It should take at least one of them.

The dispute now before the court concerns a line of legislative text that offers federal subsidies to customers shopping for health care insurance on a marketplace, or exchange, “established by the State.” Most states did not create their own exchanges, instead deferring to the federal government, which the law empowered to create exchanges in their stead.

Without subsidies, the feder-

al exchanges would struggle to attract enough customers to maintain viable markets.

In other words, the plaintiffs insist that the architects of the law designed it in a way that begs its failure.

One road for the court would be to throw the case back to a lower court without ruling on its merits. It seems unlikely the court would agree to hear a case only to punt it away. But there are legitimate questions about whether the named plaintiffs have the proper standing to sue.

On the merits, those suing offer what they claim is one plausible rationale for the law’s potentially self-defeating language: That Congress actually meant to withhold subsidies from non-coop-

erative states in order to persuade them to create their own exchanges. This argument strains the imagination, since it runs counter to the law’s fundamental purpose: establishing a near-universal health-coverage program through private insurance marketplaces.

There is scant evidence for this theory on the record, and the legislators who drafted the bill said it is false.

The Urban Institute recently found that a ruling hostile to the Obama administration would result in 9.3 million people losing subsidies next year. Fortunately, the justices need not rule based on any feared or preferred policy result. They only need to read the law reasonably.

New Batavia gastropub spotlights wings Crosstown Pub and Grill food featured on Travel Channel

rosstown Pub and Grill’s fiery chicken wings have earned such a reputation that they have been featured on the Travel Channel.

Wings are among the items on the menu at Crosstown, located at 1890 Mill St., Batavia. The restaurant, which opened during Super Bowl weekend, celebrated its grand opening this past weekend.

This is Crosstown’s second location.

Jim Nichols Sr., the restaurant’s owner and executive chef, opened Crosstown in 2007 at 909 E. Ogden Ave., Naperville, following a career change.

“I was in the banking industry for 15 years and just had a passion to always open up my own restaurant and my own brewery as well, which is forthcoming,” Nichols said. “I wanted to do a brew pub, but – at the time – there wasn’t any licensing for that in Naperville.”

His concept was to create a higher-end sports pub, or what is commonly referred to as a gastropub.

“I just wanted it to be something completely unique and different,” Nichols said. “Everybody seems to have their version of wings, and mine happened to take off.”

Crosstown’s wings are fresh and never frozen, he said. Customers have the option of getting them breaded, fried or grilled.

Customers also can choose from 21 homemade dry rubs along with 21 homemade sauces, as well as a variety of dressings. Crosstown’s “Devil’s Sweat” sauce – made with ghost peppers, which are known for their hotness – has been featured on the Travel Channel.

The hot sauce is at the center of Crosstown’s wing challenge. Customers who can eat 13 wings coated with the hot sauce get their meal for free along with a T-shirt that says, “I beat the devil and I won my

wings.”

“We’ve had thousands upon thousands of people come in and try it, and some of them have won,” Nichols said.

Along with wings, Crosstown’s menu also features steak burgers made from brisket, sirloin and top loin. A wide variety of toppings are available, including grilled pineapple, chunky peanut butter and sausage.

“It’s something they can’t get just anywhere,” Nichols said. “It’s not like they are going to have the same burger somewhere else. It’s not your traditional toppings.”

Flatbread sandwiches along with tacos and tortillas also are on the menu, as well as other items.

The name Crosstown plays off of the rivalry between area sports teams. The Batavia restaurant features separate dining rooms for Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles.

Having lived in St. Charles for 10 years, Nichols knows about the local crosstown

rivalries.

“We know how intense these rivalries can be within the communities, and I just thought that people might like this,” Nichols said.

Crosstown occupies the space that formerly housed El Casanova Mexican restaurant. Workers spent two months renovating the space, including putting in a new bar that has 40 draft lines and renovating a wine and whiskey bar.

“We plan when the weather breaks to remodel the patio and paint the outside,” Nichols said. “It’s overdue.”

Nichols still has hopes of opening a full-scale production brewery by the end of year. He currently is looking at a couple of properties in St. Charles for the brewery.

SMaSH Brewery stands for single malt and single hop.

“It really brings brewing down to its basics,” Nichols said. “Typically, a lot of craft beers will have multiple styles of hops, multiple styles of malts. While I love that, I think that also singling out a hop or singling out a malt is important. It creates a more clean, crisp beer.”

Lee had just sold his wine labels, Siduri and Novy, to Jackson Family Wines.

Within 48 hours after news of the sale broke, Lee had sent more than 475 emails.

A $24,000 investment 22 years ago turned into a sprawling business of exceptional single-vineyard pinot noir at Siduri and impressive syrah and other varietals under the Novy banner. Lee had grown the combined business to 25,000 cases. He had contracts with the top vineyards in California and Oregon and had a robust travel schedule to promote and sell his wines.

Winemakers throughout the industry marveled at the frequent flier miles Lee racked up.

The sale to Jackson Family Wines will let Lee, who signed a three-year contract to remain winemaker, get back into the cellar more often.

It also lets him get on the road to scout new vineyards.

Something he hasn’t had the opportunity to do since Siduri was in its infancy.

This fall, Lee had some serious discussions but ran up against harvest and decided the fit wasn’t right.

But, when he met with members of the Jackson family, Lee felt a connection.

He said he will relish the opportunity to get back to his roots as a winemaker.

“Twenty-two years ago the driving force behind Siduri was to make wine, not to own a winery,” Lee said.

“The last few years we were more winery owners than winemakers.”

Lee also is excited by the Jackson Family properties in the Anderson Valley, a California American Viticultural

Wine 101 Producers of single vineyard pinot noir are hot commodities.

For the second time in six years, Kosta Browne has a new majority owner after private equity group J.W. Childs and Associates made a deal in early January.

Jackson Family Winery has been buying Oregon pinot noir producers since 2013.

The popularity of pinot noir is evident. The influx of money should mean more pinot noir on store shelves.

Hopefully, quality production will follow as well.

At an almost unfathomable clip, sharpshooters such as Cole Gentry, Jake Asquini, Mick Vyzral and Jake Clodi have punished defense with their marksmanship as East entered the postseason having made more than 120 3-pointers more than their opposition.

DiLeonardi provided the surprise storyline in the IHSA Class 4A Geneva Regional semifinal, making five 3-pointers to lead the Saints to a 62-55 victory. East (24-3) advances to Friday’s whopper of a regional championship game against

top-seeded Geneva (26-3).

DiLeonardi missed his first 3-pointer of the night before burying his next five. He doubled his made 3-pointers for the season in one memorable night, and led East with 17 points to go with his customary, salty defense.

“I’ve just been working on it a lot in practice throughout the season because I knew once the playoffs came teams would let me shoot more because they didn’t think I could make it,” DiLeonardi said. “So I’ve been working on it a lot and trying to be able to knock it down in games and force people to guard me because it’s going to help the team out in the long-run.”

He found his scoring stride on drives to the basket early in the third quarter, providing a crucial secondary offensive option behind senior Jack Callaghan (23 points) as the Saints limited North point guard Jake Ludwig.

A frenzied atmosphere hardly fazed the sturdy, 6-foot-5 Hammer, whose first varsity season featured four encounters with the archival Saints.

“Like we’ve been saying from the beginning, ‘Eye of the Hurricane,’ ” Hammer

said. “You’ve just got to block out everything on the outside and focus on your play.”

North trailed by six points at halftime, as both sides conceded an ugly first 16 minutes.

With explosive Saints point guard Cole Gentry proving equally nimble on the defensive end against Ludwig – his senior counterpart who attempted only seven field goals and had nine points – Hammer, well, struck.

He hit his first four field goals of the third quarter, helping North hover around five- to seven-point deficits

before the Saints broke through behind their vaunted long-range shooting.

“I was seeing a lot of open lanes because East was kind of playing off of me,” Hammer said. “I got a lot of opportunities, and I took them when they were there.”

To be sure, there were more shots to be hoisted as Ludwig fought to get unshackled from the cover of Gentry and East.

He also battled foul trouble, fouling out with 2:29 to play. Ludwig at first reacted more fervently to his fourth foul less than 90 seconds ear-

“That’s who we were helping off of, and he made us pay for helping off of him,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “Credit to him.”

The teams’ fourth meeting of the season also marked the fourth straight year the St. Charles rivals met in a regional semifinal. On both fronts,

East improved its mark against North to 3-1.

North (18-9) was led by 23 points and 10 rebounds from senior forward Jack Callaghan but fellow team leader Jake Ludwig was held to nine points on seven field goal attempts before fouling out with 2:29 to play. Gentry primarily checked Ludwig and the Saints collectively succeeded in steering Ludwig and the North Stars away from transition opportunities.

Up-and-coming sophomore forward Griffin Hammer did his share to keep North in the hunt, scoring 13 points and

blocking four shots in a highly energetic performance.

DiLeonardi canned 3 of 4 3-point attempts in the first half, helping his team to a 26-20 halftime advantage.

Callaghan provided nine of North’s 10 points in the second quarter as both teams struggled with their shooting touch in the opening half.

Gentry and Asquini scored 12 points apiece for the Saints, who led 45-38 after three quarters and extended their lead to 56-44 on an open, James McQuillan 3-pointer off a slick DiLeonardi assist with 2:58 to play in the game.

North defeated East in overtime the last time the teams met in January. Poulin called this year’s North squad “as good as we’ve ever had, people and players,” and weighed in on the well-documented, high degree of difficulty at the Geneva Regional.

“Everyone’s not playing the same tournament,” Poulin said of the unfavorable postseason draw. “But we came into the game very confident.

It’s a great atmosphere. It’s something no one will forget.

Down a couple months from now, these guys will look at it a little differently. I will, too.”

GENEVA – Griffin Hammer’s name fuses a mythical creature with perhaps the most blunt tool known to mankind.

For all its quick-witted chants during Wednesday’s Class 4A Geneva Regional semifinal, the St. Charles East boys basketball Griffin team’s student Hammer section highlighted neither of those factoids about Hammer, a St. Charles North sophomore forward.

The Saints Superfans’ attention will no doubt be elsewhere when East tangles with the host Vikings for the regional title Friday night, but here’s an eventual offseason homework assignment: Brainstorm something that might rattle Hammer. Or at least scratch the surface.

“Unfortunately, he’s only a sophomore, so obviously, he’s going to be someone we’re going to have to contend with,” Saints coach Pat Woods said.

Woods used multiple verb tenses there, but he hardly was overlooking the present. Hammer contributed 13 points, five rebounds and

“It’s great to get a win, it’s great to survive and advance, but part of you feels for them, you know,” Gentry said.

“They had great careers. I mean, love watching them play when they’re not playing us.”

At this time last year, when East and North met in this round for the third of what is now four consecutive seasons, Hammer was the one on the sidelines.

With a new-look group of North Stars ripe for the leading next season, he’ll hope to make another dent.

Either way, the No. 3 Knights were able to erase a 10-point deficit and maintain the lead late in a 53-46 win over No. 2 Burlington Central in a Class 3A Burlington Central Regional semifinal on Wednesday.

The Knights (14-15) will play No. 1 Hampshire on Friday for the title despite not scoring for the first 6 minutes, 34 seconds of the fourth quarter and not making a field goal in the final frame.

Tonight, the gameplan was to keep him inside as much as possible and we were able to get him some work and some touches and he produced.”

Glenbard South will face Aurora Central Catholic for the regional title at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Spartans and Raiders sides traded the lead back and forth in the second quarter, ending with a miss from downtown from Jason Sullivan and the Raiders clinging to a 27-26 lead.

“I thought we had hustle points all game,” Ward said.

“If there was an effort award I thought we would have gotten it, but that doesn’t get you to Friday night. Very, very proud of the kids though. I’ve never had a better group. They’re resilient.”

Senior Mike Shaw led the Spartans with 25 points, while Sullivan added 14.

“The whole time we knew we were in it, that we had a chance,” Shaw said. “The entire time.”

AURORA – St. Francis boys basketball player Daniel Malek took an elbow above the eye in the second quarter on Wednesday, a wound that required a hospital visit for stitches after the game.

That play exemplified the slugfest between the Spartans and Glenbard South, who edged St. Francis, 61-56, in a Class 3A IMSA Regional semifinal.

With the lead changing hands 10 times in the second half, Glenbard South ultimately bested the Spartans (15-12), who refused to go quietly despite trailing for almost the entirety of the final 16 minutes.

“Sometimes shots fall, sometimes they don’t. I just thought that are kids just kept coming back and coming back,” Spartans coach Bob Ward said. “We looked like we were dead in the water two or three times in that fourth quarter, and we kept tipping balls out and getting extra shots. I thought we really put pressure on them defensively, but that’s just the way it falls sometimes. They’re a tough team to guard; they’ve got good perimeter kids.”

Down 57-53 with 20 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Malek – who returned minutes after being patched up – dished one of his four second-half assists out to junior forward Nick Cooney, whose 3 cut the gap to a single point.

St. Francis’ double-team on the inbounds pass forced a turnover, sending Gabriel Johnson to the line down a point with 16.9 to play, shooting two.

He missed both.

The Raiders made both their free throws on the ensuing foul. Malek dribbled the ball to the baseline and his pass, looking for Cooney, was picked off.

North grad Gray pitches in with Pittsburgh swimming Everything was going well for Spencer Gray this season.

And then ran into some bad luck.

Gray, a former St. Charles North swimmer, was having a pretty successful sophomore season in the pool at Pittsburgh. But then a bout of Spencer the stomach Gray flu limited him during the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships last week in Atlanta. It wasn’t how he envisioned the postseason event going down, but he’s done a pretty good job finding the silver lining.

“It was definitely a learning experience for me, and I can use it as motivation for next year, to get back and score some points,” Gray said. “I was expecting to make it into the top 24 for finals to re-swim. It will definitely help me next year to stay motivated and to train through it.”

This season was definitely a good one for the North Star turned Panther. He won both the 500-yard freestyle and the 1,000 freestyle at the team’s final regular-season meet at Villanova, and was victorious in the 200 freestyle at Pitt’s senior recognition meet.

He won a couple of races back in the fall, too: the 500 freestyle against St. Bonaventure and the 1,000 freestyle against Bucknell.

And he made the 16-member team of Pitt swimmers who traveled to compete in the ACC Championships. And although his sickness limited him at that meet, he still posted a season-best time in the 500 freestyle.

It was an improvement from his freshman campaign, when he said he was busy adjusting to life at the college level and with his new teammates.

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber “I definitely knew I was capable of [the success of sophomore year], but last year I was getting a feel for the team, trying to find my place,” he said. “This year I definitely found it. I knew what to expect this year more than last year.”

While he said he didn’t meet all of his goals this season, he’s confident in his swimming ability, listing off some specific objectives already for next season, including finishing in the top eight or top 24 in the 500 freestyle at the ACC Championships.

Then there’s the classroom, where Gray, a computer science major, is thinking about wrapping his undergraduate studies up in only three years, using that fourth year for graduate school.

Pitt might seem a somewhat unique choice for a St. Charles kid to attend college.

But family ties and a love of the place made it the perfect choice for Gray.

“My grandma actually went to Pitt and graduated with a nursing degree, so I have a connection that way,” Gray said. “I went to the campus, and I really liked it.

I liked the coaches and the team, and I liked the atmosphere here, so I knew it was the right choice.”

An assist from his grandmother landed Gray at Pitt.

An assist from good luck next season – staying in good health during ACC Championships weekend – could mean another big improvement.

Cautious response to new weight loss drug Dear Doctor K: I heard about a new drug that can help people lose weight. I’m overweight. Should I give it a try?

Dear Reader: You’re likely referring to Contrave, a drug the FDA approved in September of 2014 to help people lose weight along with a reduced-calorie diet and exercise.

Contrave combines two drugs, naltrexone and bupropion. These drugs are already approved for other uses. Naltrexone is used to help kick alcohol and narcotic addiction. Bupropion is used to treat depression and seasonal affective disorder. Many people also take bupropion to stop smoking.

Neither naltrexone nor bupropion by itself has been approved for weight loss.

Why should the combination of these drugs help with weight loss?

It’s likely that the drugs act on impulse, reward and/or hunger centers in the brain to decrease appetite and dampen the reflex to seek food for comfort.

Not everyone who is overweight needs a weight loss drug.

Contrave is approved for adults who are obese and for certain people who are overweight. Obese is defined as a body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or higher. Overweight

Overweight adults should only take Contrave if they also have at least one other weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure or Type 2 diabetes. The FDA approved Contrave based on the results of several clinical trials that included 4,500 overweight and obese men and women. All were treated for one year.

In one trial of people without diabetes, 42 percent of those who took Contrave lost at least 5 percent of their body weight, compared with 17 percent of those who took a placebo. In a trial of people with diabetes, 36 percent of those taking Contrave lost at least 5 percent of their body weight, compared with 18 percent of those taking a placebo.

Like any drug, Contrave can cause unwanted, sometimes serious, side effects. Used alone,

bupropion has been linked to suicidal thoughts, as well as seizures. And naltrexone use has been linked to seizures. I think the drug should be avoided by anyone who: • Has had seizures in the past • Has had an eating disorder (bulimia or anorexia nervosa) • Is taking an opioid pain medicine or a medicine to treat addiction to opioids • Is taking an antidepressant medicine called an MAOI • Is pregnant I am reluctant to get enthusiastic about a new medicine until some time has passed. The 4,500 people who participated in studies is a pretty large number. However, it is a very small fraction of the total number who are likely to be prescribed the medicine. Rare but serious side effects could have been missed in the early studies.

Also, about half of the people in the studies saw no benefit. If you take the medicine for 12 weeks and see no benefit, it’s wise to talk to your doctor about stopping it.

Dr. Wallace: My best friend went on a cruise in the Caribbean with her grandparents over the Christmas holidays, and she told me that she met a real cute guy aboard the ship and they spent five glorious nights drinking exotic alcoholic drinks.

This friend sometimes likes to exaggerate, and I think this might be one of those times. She is 18 and I’m thinking that a cruise ship would probably check IDs. My mom says that all states have a minimum drinking age of 21, so if this is the case aboard ship I’d like to inform my friend that she should stop fabricating stories.

– Nameless, Milwaukee, Wisconsin Dear Nameless: It’s true that the minimum drinking age is 21 in all states, but once ships are in international waters most use 18 as the minimum drinking age. The reason is that most cruise ships are registered in countries other than the United States and are intended to provide profit for their owners.

The architects divided the woodframed structure into an “L” shape with the studio and office placed at the rear. Between the two wings, a courtyard bordered by low concrete walls provides an outdoor dining and entertaining area, and another work space for Hoysted in warm weather.

The artist’s ground-floor studio opens to the courtyard, providing access for visitors.

Business colleagues meeting with Singh can make use of a spiral staircase next to the driveway at the side of the house that winds up to his second-floor office.

“We had a lot of fun designing this house,” says McInturff, pointing to playful window patterns and blue-painted balconies, firebox and stair projecting from exterior walls.

“Jackie and Prem were game in terms of creativity, and part of that creativity was about cost savings.”

The couple spent about $700,000, not including the architect’s fee, to construct the new house, after spending $720,000 for the 1930s home that was razed. “We went back and forth between expanding the existing structure and demolishing it,” Hoysted says.

“Mark gave us some suggestions about adding on, but we wanted a cleaner,

“We were willing to work with alternative materials,” Singh says.

The aluminum sections around the balconies “are standard products that were designed in a way so that they could be fabricated and painted off-site, and then assembled like a kit on-site,” Healey says.

By taking advantage of the sloping site, the architects sunk the painting studio into the lower, rear part of the lot so it sits a half-level below the living area at the front. That position allowed the studio to rise 14 feet, compared with the nine-foot ceilings in the rest of the house.

“Not every house has an artist-in-residence,” McInturff says. “I wanted Jackie’s studio to be seen from different vantage points throughout the house.”

The presence of the creative space is evident from the moment the front door is opened, since it is located at the end of the entrance hallway and reached down a flight of stairs from this corridor. The open staircase and outdoor courtyard at the center of the house offer additional views of the tall room.
