Annual film festival kicks off Thursday

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – They have names such as “Rabbit and Deer,” “King of Norway” and “Memoirs of a Parapsychologist.”

They come in categories that include narrative shorts, drama, animated features and comedy.

And all 47 will be featured this week at the seventh annual Geneva Film Festival, which kicks off this week with films, events with filmmakers at a roundtable discussion and a Saturday “wrap” party.

Films will start on two screens at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Dodson Place, at the corner of Second Street and Fulton Avenue, near the Geneva train station.

A free continental breakfast and filmmakers’ roundtable discussion will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, featuring Katharyn Grant of Colorado, who produced, directed and stars in the film “The One Who Loves You,” and filmmaker Alan Clay from New Zealand, who produced “Courting Chaos.”

The “It’s A Wrap” party begins at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Wildwood Restaurant next door to the festival and with live music by Kenneth Daniels.

Admission is $15 for a threeday pass, $10 for a one-day pass and $5 for a single film block. Students receive halfprice admission and a free T-shirt on Thursday with a

Film festival volunteer Chuck Wrede of St. Charles said he judged about 20 student short films and was impressed with how well they were all done.

“They had high production values, all pretty polished productions,” Wrede said. “Even the ones that did not make it into the festival were impressive.”

Wrede said the judges rate and review all the movies and give them three or four stars.

“We had more than 100 submissions from around the world,” Wrede said.

8LOCAL BRIEFS 4-H Foundation pork chop dinner planned ST. CHARLES – The Kane County 4-H Foundation will host its sixth annual pork chop dinner and auction fundraiser from 4:30 to 7 p.m. April 12, at the Prairie Events Center at the Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 Randall Road, St. Charles.

Attendees have the choice of a two-chop dinner for $14, a one-chop dinner for $12, or a pulled pork sandwich dinner for $8.

All dinners include apple sauce, coleslaw, baked beans, a roll, cookies and a drink (pop sold separately).

The dinner will be prepared by the Elburn Lions Club and served by Kane County 4-H’ers and Extension volunteers.

Throughout the evening, there will be a silent auction of themed baskets donated

by Kane County 4-H Clubs and area supporters.

At 7 p.m., there will be a live

auction of prizes, including sports event tickets.

Tickets for the dinner are available through 4-H families or at the University of Illinois Extension Office at 535 S. Randall Road in St. Charles, through March 28 or contact the 4-H Foundation’s Jeff Bornemann at 630-466-1626 or Joe White at 630-557-2517.

A limited number of tickets will be available for purchase at the door for an additional $1 per meal.

Salvation Army offers free computer class ST. CHARLES – The Salvation Army, 1710 S. Seventh Ave., St. Charles, will offer a free computer class to help individuals in their job search.

Candidates field questions at forum

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Republican candidates running for two Kane County offices – clerk and sheriff – fielded questions from the public Tuesday night during a candidates forum hosted by the League of Women Voters of Central Kane County.

The candidates for clerk are incumbent Jack Cunningham of Aurora and County Board member Mark Davoust of St. Charles. No Democratic candidate has filed for the position.

“This system works best when we have the most people involved,” he said.

Cunningham would not use taxpayer dollars for purposes not statutorily required, he said. He said using taxpayer money to get people to vote sets a “dangerous precedent.”

Williams has been a civil servant in various capacities, he said, noting his commitment to Kane County residents is why he wants the job.

“I’m very passionate about serving,” he said.

Kramer’s interest in police work began as a child, he said,

noting his father was in law enforcement and was sheriff when he joined the office.

Both candidates said there is a need to work with the community to address heroin and substance abuse.

Kramer said a threepronged approach is needed: Prevention, education and enforcement.

“It’s a community problem,” Kramer said.

Williams said prescription drugs also must be included in the discussion. Many kids become hooked on those drugs during treatment of a sports injury, he said, noting that can lead to their use of street drugs.

The primary election is March 18. Early voting started Monday.

St. Charles preparing for St. Patrick’s Day parade KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Motorists and pedestrians should take note of road closures and parking restrictions March 15, the day of the St. Patrick’s Parade in St. Charles.

The street closures will be in effect starting at 1:45 p.m.

March 15 before the parade kicks off at 2 p.m., according to a news release issued by the city.

Main Street will be closed between Seventh Street on the west side of the Fox River and Fifth Avenue (Route 25) on the east side.

Second Street (Illinois Route 31) also will be closed during the parade between State and Illinois streets. Detour routes for Routes 64 and 31 will be posted and staffed by police and emergency management personnel using the following streets: State Street, Seventh Street, Illinois Street, Illinois Avenue and Fifth Avenue.

Motorists are reminded

to follow detour route signs and be alert for pedestrians and traffic control personnel.

St. Charles police encourage drivers seeking quick passage through the region to use alternate routes, as long delays might be experienced.

Parking will be prohibited on parade and detour routes from noon to 3 p.m. March 15.

Vehicles parked in violation will be towed, according to the release.

Several streets will be closed starting at 11 a.m.

March 15 to allow for the staging of parade units.

Those streets are Walnut Street from South Third Street to South Seventh Street, South Fourth, Fifth and Sixth streets from Main Street to Illinois Street, North Sixth Street from Main Street to State Street and Cedar Street from North Fifth Street to North Seventh Street.

Parking will be prohibited on those streets as well.

The St. Charles Police Department said in the release that it urged everyone to act responsibly this St. Patrick’s Day season and be mindful of increased pedestrian traffic.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com There will be no charges in an incident in which a Kane County Sheriff’s deputy fatally shot an armed Batavia Township man in July 2013.

An investigation concluded that the deputy, a 20-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, was justified when he shot Luke Bulzak, 52, to death on July 8. The incident occurred in the Heritage West subdivision in Batavia Township.

“That deputy took legally justified action to respond to a real and present dan-

ger,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said Tuesday. “It was a dangerous situation created by Mr. Bulzak. This was an unfortunate but appropriate response from the public officer on the scene.”

The sheriff’s department asked the Illinois State Police to investigate the incident, and the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed those findings. McMahon spoke about the case Tuesday during his monthly media briefing.

According to the sheriff’s office, police said they

encountered Bulzak on the roof of his home with a rifle.

Police said they were dispatched at 11:40 a.m. July 8 to the 3S300 block of Elfstrom Trail in Batavia Township for a report of a man making suicidal threats.

Police said they tried to get Bulzak to drop the rifle, but he refused and pointed it at the deputies. A sheriff’s sergeant then shot Bulzak. No one else was injured. Since the incident, Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez said that the department’s thoughts and prayers have been with Bulzak’s family.

Winter’s chill limits progress on Anderson Road project

“The contractor is ready to go,” he said. “We’re ready to go.”

But the “incredibly cold weather” has limited the amount of progress crews can make, Boesch said.

This winter, crews have worked in below-freezing temperatures, conducting such work as excavation and framing with wood, Boesch said.

Other elements, however, are more dependent on the weather, he said.

Because cold affects the curing of concrete, crews must wait for warmer days to pour any concrete, Boesch said. He said temperatures in the 40s would be suitable.

County engineer Carl Schoedel said the project is expected to extend into 2015.

Eva Maria Nettles, 47, of Wildwood, Mo., passed away Monday, Feb. 24, 2014.

Mrs. Nettles lived with her husband and three children in Geneva from 2000 until relocating to Wildwood in 2013.

Mrs. Nettles prided herself as pursuing one of life’s greatest professions, that of being a fulltime mom to her three children.

Born May 6, 1966, in St. Louis, she was preceded in death by her father, Laszlo Lagage of Denver; and survived by her mother, Maria Kovacs-Lagage, also of Denver. She was a member of Christ Community Church in St. Charles.

She is further survived by her husband of 27 years, Michael Nettles of Wildwood; and their three children, Kelsey, Kayla and Jacob.

She also is survived by three siblings, Kathy (spouse Mike) Cole of House Springs, Mo., Michael (spouse Christine) Lagage of Denver and Danny (spouse Jamie) Lagage of Denver.

She leaves behind her father and mother-in-law, Cecil and Arleda Nettles of Arnold, Mo.; and sister-in-law, Regina (spouse Mike) Stark of Oakville, Mo. She also is survived by cousins, Becky and Tina; as well as nieces and nephews, Amanda, Timothy, Amanda, Josh, Hayden, Daphne, Shay and Faye.

Eva was a breast cancer survivor and a courageous cancer warrior for these past eight years, active in community cancer awareness programs for the LivingWell Cancer Resource Center in Geneva. For those friends and family wishing to memorialize her battle and pay tribute to the personal and quality care of the medical professionals in Geneva that helped her fight the disease, the family encourages donations to the LivingWell Cancer Resource Center. ‘THERE’S SO MUCH TO LEARN’ Some parents leaping at chance for kids to participate in full-day kindergarten

eneva District 304 has opened all-day kindergarten registration for the 2014-15 school year, a new option in the school district. Parents still will have the option of a half-day program if they choose.

A kindergarten study committee found that allday students would receive a stronger educational foundation to meet the state’s Common Core Standards, as well as more opportunities for their developmental and social-emotional needs, Geneva officials said.

And as officials seemed poised to approve it, parents said they wanted it, as Jennifer and Matthew Cox did at a forum.

“We have a kindergartner there right now at Heartland now and a son who will be

going there in a few years,” Jennifer Cox said. “We have found that it’s such a rigorous program. It’s only 2½ hours ... and there’s so much to learn.”

St. Charles District 303, Batavia District 101 and Kaneland District 302 already offer the option of fullday kindergarten. Batavia partners with the Batavia Park District for half of its all-day program. The Geneva Park District offers Kinderzone, a recreation-based program for kindergarten students.

Geneva Park District spokeswoman Traci Wicks said the additional program in Geneva could affect attendance at Kinderzone.

“It will give parents a fullday option,” Wicks said. “It’s up to parents who they want to educate their child – with

more recreation or school curriculum at that early age. We are still going to offer our program the way it is set up currently.”

Unlike the other districts’ programs, Geneva parents will not have to pay tuition for the full-day program. The additional kindergarten program will cost the district about $352,650 and an additional one-time startup cost of $78,000, officials said.

House Bill 2405 would have amended the Illinois School Code to make full-day kindergarten mandatory statewide by the 2016 school year, but the bill was re-referred to committee last March and has not budged since then. Steve Brown, a spokesman for House Speaker Michael Madigan, said lawmakers believe it would be money well spent, but it is not likely to move forward this session because of cost.

“People concluded while it’s a worthwhile idea, it would be a cost-prohibitive idea, given state and local school district budgets,” Brown said. “It would be an unfunded mandate. That is why they are not pushing the legislation this year.”

Kaneland Superintendent Jeffrey Schuler said the district began offering all-day kindergarten more as an economical service to families whose children were taking the bus to a local preschool or day care for the other half of the day. About half of the district’s 320 kindergartners are in the all-day program.

Sarah Mumm, the Kaneland director of educational services for kindergarten through fifth grade, said the program is set up to allow children to have core academics in the morning with an afternoon opportunity to explore that curriculum with activities.

“Say in the morning, they’re counting by 10s. In the after-

helping children get ahead academically, Mumm said research does not support that.

Citing a 2006 study by the Rand Corporation, a nonprofit research organization, Mumm said the research shows children who went to full-day kindergarten had a decreased need for remediation in first grade.

But whatever gains these children made did not continue. Analysis showed the positive effects of all-day kindergarten was reduced by half by the end of first grade and eliminated by the end of third grade, according to the study.

“Is all-day kindergarten really worth it? I think it really depends upon the child and the specific situation of the child,” Mumm said. “It is worth it for that child who is inspired by learning and thrives by wanting more.”

Geneva’s kindergarten study committee recommended all-day kindergarten as a prerequisite for Common Core Standards, a national plan adopted by most states, including Illinois, to standardize what is expected from students at each grade level.

Regardless of what other studies show, Andrew Barrett, director of teaching and learning for District 304, full-day kindergarten is an opportunity to prepare students for Common Core Standards.

Barrett said changing kindergarten also will mean changing first grade, second grade, third grade and so on, in light of the Common Core Standards.

“We want to make sure we can provide a program that supports kids in achieving those standards,” Barrett said. “We believe providing all day, every day, for all students gives us the opportunity to have an academically rigorous and developmentally appropriate program for all students – and one that can put all of our students on the best path to success.”

Police report two more burglary incidents KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Police on Tuesday reported two more burglary incidents in St. Charles, bringing the total to four reported over an eightday period.

The third and fourth incidents occurred Monday, according to a news release. Police responded about 6 p.m. to a residence in the 0-100 block of Roosevelt Street. Sometime between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Monday, someone tried to pry open a rear door at the residence, the release said. No entry was made into the home, and no property was missing.

The fourth incident occurred sometime between 7:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on the 800 block of Gray Street, less than a mile west of the third incident.

The resident reported that an unknown person forcibly entered the residence, likely by prying open a rear service door, according to police.

This is the fourth burglary or attempted burglary incident reported in St. Charles since Feb. 24.

On that day, an unknown male attempted to force entry into a home in the 500 block of North Tyler Road on the city’s east side, but was startled by a resident and fled the area, police said.

On Thursday an unknown subject forced entry into a residence in the 500 block of McKinley Street.

All reported incidents have

driving with a suspended license and driving without insurance. The charges stemmed from an accident Jan. 14.

• Ian B. Gemmell, 28, of the 1700 block of South Third Place, St. Charles, was charged Wednesday, Feb. 26, with selling tobacco to a minor at Lundeen’s Liquor, 1315 W. Main St., St. Charles.

• Terrell Jones, 22, of the 100 block of Walnut Drive, St. Charles, was charged Thursday, Feb. 27, with driving with an expired registration and arrested on a Kane County warrant for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving with a revoked license. He also had warrants from Kendall County on a charge of possession of stolen property and in Batavia for failing to appear in court on a charge of disorderly conduct.

• Catherine F. Liss, 44, of the 1600 block of Columbia Circle, Bartlett, was charged Thursday, Feb. 27, with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.08 percent and driving too fast for conditions after a rollover crash at Eighth Avenue and East Main Street in St. Charles.

• Jamal Walid Abu-Gheida, 18, of the 7N200 block of Hickory Lane, Elgin, was charged Thursday, Feb. 27, with possession of marijuana and

possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Jocelyn M. Cadwallader-Bailey, 35, of the 39W300 block of Armstrong Lane, Geneva, was charged Thursday, Feb. 27, with leaving the scene of an accident and disobeying a traffic control device after an accident at Prairie and Third streets in St. Charles.

• Vincent Thomas Kasprzak Jr., 50, of the 2300 block of Elm Road, West Chicago, was charged Friday, Feb. 28, with reckless driving.

• Jose Vivera Medina, 40, of the 1600 block of Indiana Street, St. Charles, was charged Friday, Feb. 28, with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.08 percent, driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, leaving the scene of an accident and two counts of aggravated DUI-license suspended or revoked. His vehicle reportedly rear-ended another vehicle at West Main and Third streets in St. Charles.

• Robert A. Cox, 38, of the 100 block of Railroad Street, Sugar Grove, was charged Saturday, March 1, with battery and fighting.

• Darvee Daniels, 40, of the 400 block of North Avenue, Batavia, was charged Saturday, March 1, with battery and fighting.

The fat trap THE WASHINGTON POST Headlines last week offered a glimmer of hope on obesity.

A government study found that the obesity rate for children ages 2 to 5 dropped by about 40 percent between 2003 and 2012. That comports with another recent government report finding that in several states, young, poor children are healthier. This is encouraging but no reason for complacency. In fact, last week’s announcement shows that obesity remains a daunting problem that demands more effort – from Americans and their government.

Assuming the results reflect a real and significant trend, what will happen when these children grow up? For Americans older than 5, obesity rates have stayed about the same in recent years. A third of adults are obese, and 17 percent of all children are morbidly overweight. The positive spin on these findings is that Americans’ waistlines have finally ceased to expand. We’d suggest that the country should not be comfortable that the ravages of obesity – diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, cancer and more – will diminish the living standards of merely a third of our countrymen, even if some of their children and grandchildren end up better off.

Meanwhile, maintaining even a diminished quality of life for overweight people is expensive. Researchers in 2012

estimated that keeping the obesity rate steady would save some $550 billion over the next two decades, compared to scenarios public health experts feared. But that would still leave annual spending on treating obesity-related disease at about $150 billion a year.

The government should stop subsidizing crops such as corn, which gets converted into high-fructose corn syrup. It should conduct more research on what’s behind the plateauing obesity rate and the improvement in toddlers. New labeling requirements for storebought food, proposed last week by the Food and Drug Administration, will help. They will make it harder for food companies to confuse consumers with unrealistic serving sizes and will list added sugars, a major contributor to poor nutritional health.

The FDA could do better by giving consumers a sense of how much sugar is too much sugar, but the added transparency will be a good step.

More difficult to implement, but probably more effective, would be direct financial incentives. Many public health activists want to tax sugary drinks. Understandable, but studies and simple reasoning argue for taxing the underlying culprit, sugar, wherever it appears. A partial step would be to reform the food stamp program to promote healthier eating, as has already happened in a similar program.

“It is projected that purchase power and associated capacity costs will increase by approximately $5.2 million in 2014,” Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm told aldermen during the Joint Committee of the Whole meeting.

Property owners concerned about possible pet care facility

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Two residents of St. Charles on Tuesday shared their concerns about a proposed pet care facility that they said would affect their east-side properties.

Apartment complex owner Barbara Petkus and Diane Bossert, owner of two units at the Hunt Club, spoke to the city’s Plan Commission during a public hearing for Fydoland, a pet facility planned for the former Rex’s Cork and Fork, 1317 E. Main St., St. Charles. Petkus and Bossert think the business will bring too much noise and lower property values.

“I am totally confused as

to why it’s even put here,” said Bossert, who owns the complex at 1408 E. Main St. “I think it’s going to ruin my business.”

Bossert said she has many tenants that work at night and need to sleep during the day.

That will be difficult to do when dogs are constantly barking, she said.

Robin Massey, the applicant and owner of Fydoland, took to the podium to address Petkus and Bossert’s concerns.

There is an upscale apartment complex across the street from the Fydoland Elgin location that has not had any complaints, Massey said.

“We’ve actually expelled

[excessive barkers] out of our locations,” said Massey, who also has a Fydoland in Huntley.

Massey’s attorney Jim Coake said at the Tuesday public hearing that the decibel for vehicle traffic on Route 64 is likely higher than any barking dogs.

He said the opening of the business would be beneficial to the city as the proposed site is presently vacant.

Plan commission members encouraged Petkus and Bossert to share their concerns with their aldermen.

The site for the proposed Fydoland is in the 1st Ward and the properties residents said would be affected are across the street in 4th Ward.

Called “Hard Times 2014; Hunger Games 2025?” guest speaker Vincent Gaddis, chairman of the Department of History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies at Benedictine University, will talk about what young adults face in education, jobs, housing and families – and what can be done to secure their futures.

Two free presentations will be held. The first is from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Gail Borden Library, 270 N Grove Ave., Elgin. The second is from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. March 20 at Elgin Community College, Room B101 in Building B, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

Gaddis is a specialist in 20th-century U.S. policy, history and the author of “Herbert Hoover, Unemployment, and the Public Sphere: A Conceptual History, 1919-1933.”

Both of his talks will be followed by an audience question-and-answer session and general conversation.

The presentations are hosted by Fox Valley Citizens for Peace and Justice and the Elgin Community College Peace and Justice Committee.

“What these kids are up against is quite staggering,” said Mary Shesgreen, chair-

woman of Fox Valley Citizens for Peace and Justice. “The presentations are important to attend because there is a new poverty in this country among people who were formerly middle class. It is hard on everybody, but it is particularly staggering for young kids coming out of high school or college, trying to find a place in the world when so many doors are going to be closed to them.”

Statistics that motivated the groups to host the event include people age 18 to 34 make up 45 percent of those who can’t find work and more than one in five in that age group postponed having a baby because of the economy.

Also, more than a third of those age 25 to 29 moved back in with their parents. In 2012, nearly 24 percent of homeless residences living in shelters were between the ages of 18 and 30.

When compared to their parents at that age, the under-30 set has a net worth of only half as much.

Also, student debt quadrupled in the past 10 years, with young Americans paying 800 percent more in interest when earnings for college graduates has declined $10,000 since 2000.

The share of unemployed recent college graduates in 2009 to 2011 was higher than in the past two decades and of those who have jobs, nearly 60 percent work in fields that do not require their degree.

ST. CHARLES – A city committee is in favor of bar owners facing heftier penalties for late alcohol tax payments.

The St. Charles Government Operations Committee on Monday voted 9-0 in favor of recommending an amendment to city ordinance to charge larger fines for late filing of alcohol taxes. The change would allow the city to charge a graduated flat rate penalty or a 5 percent penalty of the tax due, whichever is greater.

City staff wanted to change the penalty structure because staff members spend several hours each month chasing down

bar owners for penalties as small as $10, according to a city memo.

Last month, the city’s assistant director of finance said the fines should be paid on time.

“There really is no reason for [the owners] to be one, two, three months behind,” said Julie Herr, assistant director of finance, on Feb. 18 during a Liquor Control Commission meeting. The commission unanimously approved bringing the amendment to committee.

Under the proposed amendment, a first-time offense would be $50, the second would cost $100 and the third and subsequent offenses would be $150. The city also would have the option each time to take the 5

percent penalty amount of the tax due if it is a larger amount.

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina on Feb. 18 said he is on a mailing list that includes correspondence about the outstanding alcohol tax filings.

“My observation is that we have the same individuals over and over again [with late filings],” Rogina said.

Herr said it is normally the smaller establishments in town that struggle to make payments on time. The form for payments is relatively easy to fill out and not time intensive, Herr said.

The amendment for higher fines will go before the full St. Charles City Council on March 17 for final approval.

John Nevenhoven, the director of public works, said the sewer rate would have to increase by at least $1 per 100 cubic feet of water each year for the next four years to reach the recommended rate of $7.10

by May 1, 2017. That rate now is at $2.82 per 100 cubic feet, and the recommendation is to raise it to $3.80 per 100 cubic feet by May of this year.

“You can see that we are a bit behind in getting to that $7.10,” Nevenhoven said.

The impact of the proposed increase for this year would be between $7 and $8 a month.

The plan would be for the sewer rate to grow by the same amount each year through 2017 – meaning the monthly

cost would go up each year – but that could be diminished if the village experiences growth. Instead of waiting and making a more dramatic increase to the sewer rate, Nevenhoven said the plan is to make smaller annual increases.

Trustees backed the move, but they decided against adding it to the consent agenda for the March 17 meeting, instead keeping it as a separate item, so that there may be more discussion on the topic.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com YORKVILLE – A St. Charles man was charged with felony criminal trespass to a residence where a family was sleeping shortly after midnight Tuesday in Yorkville, police said.

Kendall County sheriff’s deputies assisted Yorkville police with a traffic stop of a vehicle that was speeding, police said. The driver fled from the traffic stop, and the car later was found in an unincorporated area, according to a statement.

Yorkville police and sheriff’s deputies eventually found two men in a house in the 14000 block of Meadow Lane who were not residents of the house, police said. The family was sleeping and did not know the two were in the house.

“The plant we have right now would not be allowed to be built in this day and age,” he said. “It definitely would not meet today’s standards.”

Village leaders also have stressed that it does not have

anything to do with last year’s approval of the Elburn Station project, which promises to eventually double the population of the village. The wastewater project does not add capacity. However, Nevenhoven said growth would provide a benefit. As the number of customers would grow, he said, the cost would go down, since there would be more residents to help cover the payments.

He said “hopefully, we don’t have to get to that $7.10.”

He said it’s possible that the project comes in under the estimated price, and that population growth helps lower the impact. Trustee Ken Anderson asked if the cost would be adjusted once the project was paid off.

“Absolutely,” Nevenhoven said.

ELBURN – Opting for a gradual increase in what ultimately will be a significant boost to residents’ sewer bills, Elburn’s director of public works Monday night suggested that the sewer rate should rise about $1 per 100 cubic feet, effective with the May billing cycle.

It is part of the village’s plan to upgrade its wastewater plant, a project that would cost $7.65 million.

The village has $1.5 million available and would need to secure loans to cover the rest.

To pay back the loans, it will be necessary to raise fees, officials said.

Tuesday was the third day of the bench trial for Schmidt, 49, of the 28500 block of Brickville Road in Sycamore, who faces charges of reckless homicide and aggravated reckless driving in connection to a crash that killed Tim Getzelman, 21, a Sycamore High School graduate, and his girlfriend, Alexis Weber, Patricia 21, a Kaneland Schmidt High School graduate. The crash happened at the intersection of Route 23 and Peace Road in Sycamore.

If convicted of the more serious charge, reckless homicide, Schmidt could face probation or up to five years in prison.

By ANDREA AZZO aazzo@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The neurologist for a 49-year-old Sycamore woman accused of reckless homicide testified Tuesday that he had no concerns about her driving six months after he diagnosed her with a seizure condition.

Andrew Ta, a board-certified neurologist at Midwest Neurology in DeKalb, diagnosed Patricia Schmidt with a seizure condition April 17, 2007.

Schmidt called Ta’s office and reported feeling strange the morning of Feb. 21, 2011, hours before police said she ran a red light traveling about 78 mph and collided with a car carrying a local 21-yearold couple who died.

Schmidt shouldn’t have been driving because of her seizure condition, but defense attorneys asked questions Tuesday that emphasized Schmidt’s own neurologist felt comfortable with her driving six months after diagnosing her with a seizure condition, even though he changed or altered her prescription multiple times over the years.

Two doctors testified for prosecutors Tuesday. Assistant State’s Attorney Phil Montgomery tried to call Jeff Schmidt, Patricia Schmidt’s husband, to testify, but the defense objected.

Presiding Judge Robbin Stuckert gave the prosecution and defense the opportunity to present their arguments on why Jeff Schmidt should or should not be allowed to testify, and the issue is still under discussion, Montgomery said.

Andrew Oleksyn, a doctor at Kishwaukee Community Hospital with a specialty in emergency medicine, offered details about Patricia Schmidt’s medical history, saying he treated her for a seizure in April 2007. He prescribed her Ativan to prevent seizures, referred her to two neurologists, including Ta, and warned her about driving.

“We instructed her to avoid driving or avoid heavy machinery,” Oleksyn said. “If this incidence would occur again, she would harm herself or someone else.”

Ta testified Schmidt had a history with seizures since she was between 3 and 6 years old, and had other health problems such as depression and high blood pressure.

Ta changed or altered Schmidt’s prescriptions such as for Phenobarbital, which

is used to treat seizures, multiple times from April 2007 to February 2011 based on the symptoms Schmidt reported to him during their visits. After his initial warning not to drive until she knew how the medicine would affect her – a standard six months – Ta never told Schmidt not to drive, saying she was a very cooperative patient.

During some visits, Schmidt complained of auras, or a vertigo phenomenon before a seizure occurs. Ta changed her prescriptions accordingly, and to his knowledge, Schmidt followed up with taking her medication as directed.

“If the patient is reliable and follows up with treatment, there is no reason to turn them in and take their license,” Ta said.

The case will continue at 10 a.m. April 2 and April 3.

After releasing his 3-point attempt early in the second quarter, the Kaneland sophomore guard was fouled by Glenbard South’s Connor Willis, and the contact sent Vaca stumbling backward, depriving him of the visual image of watching his shot bounce off the rim and fall through.

It was that kind of charmed night for Vaca, who completed a pair of four-point plays Tuesday as top-seeded Kaneland withstood a legitimate challenge from the fourth-seeded Raiders for an 81-70 win in an IHSA Class 3A Kaneland Regional semifinal.

“I was knocked off balance, and I kept trying to find my balance, and I just couldn’t get it until I was back on [the other] side of the court,” Vaca said of his second-quarter shot. “I didn’t even see it go in. I just kind of fell down on the other side and I heard everybody cheer, so I guess it fell.”

While less theatrical, Vaca’s second four-point play came at an even more dramatic time. Kaneland trailed, 5654, early in the fourth quarter when Vaca gave the Knights the lead for good with another 3-pointer, plus the foul.

Vaca, who missed much of the season with a wrist injury, scored 20 points off the bench for the Knights (17-9).

We’re capable of doing stuff like that. It’s just when is it going to come.”

Senior Micah Coffey (seven points) scored from beyond the arc to open the third quarter, cutting the Batavia deficit to 12, but that was as close as the

Bulldogs would come the rest of the way.

“They’ve got size and they’ve got quickness,” Micah Coffey said of the Raiders.

“We kind of got away from the things we do defensively.

They took on the identity of the game. We couldn’t really get control of the game, and from then on we were chasing.”

Micah Coffey was one of six Batavia seniors playing in their final game.

“It’s been a pleasure to wear the sleeves,” he said. “It’s been an honor to be part of a program like this. I’m proud of all the guys we have. These seniors – it’s been a blast to get to know them.”

One of those seniors was 6-6 forward Tucker Knox, who did his best to try to get the Bulldogs back in the game, scoring 17 points and grabbing six re-

bounds. Knox took the ball to the basket every opportunity he got, drawing fouls that sent him to the free throw line 12 times. He hit on nine of those.

“We kind of just figured out what they were doing and got adjusted to the game,” Knox said of Batavia’s effort after the early troubles. “We just could never get enough consecutive stops to get back into it.”

Jeremy Schoessling, Alex Bala, Ryan Olson and David Alonzo also made their final appearances for the Bulldogs.

“Those six just kept going after it this year,” Nazos said of his seniors. “Great things are ahead of them.”

Gage Davis, a 6-3 senior, scored 23 points for Bolingbrook, which will meet the winner of today’s Geneva-Plainfield East game in Friday’s regional championship game.

Kaneland led, 37-35, after a fast-paced and physical first half in which explosive Raid-

ers senior point guard Chaun Rickette scored 17 points.

Rickette finished with a gamehigh 30 points for the Raiders

(16-12).

“He may be a little guy but he’s got a big heart, and he can certainly figure out ways to put the basketball in the basket,” Glenbard South coach Wade Hardtke said. “He’s been doing it for us all year this year, and tonight’s no different.”

Johnson was visibly displeased with Kaneland’s defense on multiple occasions, and suggested sharper play at that end will be required for the Knights to last much longer this postseason.

“It’s the end of the year but we’re still trying to get better,” Johnson said. “If you want to compete at a high level, you’ve got to do certain things the right way. We’ll get better tomorrow [in practice]. I’m just happy the boys have a chance to play in a regional final.”

Whether the Knights collectively have another fourpoint play in them the rest of the postseason remains to be seen. So two in one night from Vaca?

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen – well, I know I’ve never seen two of them in one night,” Hardtke said. “I guess what do you say to that?”

PLAINFIELD – For the first few minutes of Tuesday’s IHSA Class 4A regional semifinal at Plainfield East, the Batavia boys basketball team played like it was a No. 19 seed facing a No. 3 seed.

The Bulldogs (8-18) appeared tentative in the early going as Bolingbrook scored the first 11 points of the game.

Chasen Peez (17 points) finally got Batavia on the board with a 3-pointer, but the Raiders (21-5) scored the next eight points to open up a 19-3 lead. From there on out, the Bulldogs battled the talented Bolingbrook club evenly, but the damage had been done. The Raiders went on to record a 73-56 victory.

“There were things we could have helped ourselves

with early on,” Batavia coach Jim Nazos said. “I think they had a couple second chances there. … I thought we had some looks early that didn’t go.”

Nine of Bolingbrook’s 20 first-half rebounds came on the offensive end. The Raiders held a 32-20 edge on the boards in the game.

Batavia trailed, 21-7, after one quarter, but started to find the range in the second quarter, getting 3-pointers from five different players. Canaan Coffey’s trey with 1:35 left in the first half pulled the Bulldogs within 32-24.

Bolingbrook again answered with a run, scoring the final seven points of the half to open up a 15-point cushion.

“We’ve been a team of runs all season,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. “At H-F, I think we had a 22-0 run, and we’ve

The Saints’ leader, an NCAA Division-II Truman State (Mo.) recruit, said he could not have left the pool any more tired. In between breaths, Shanel, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley. Here’s an edited transcript: What is your strategy in the 500 free, with it being a longer race?

Usually, I take the first half not easy, but a little bit more relaxed. Then the second half,

kind of track down whoever’s up there if anybody’s up there.

So far, it’s paid off pretty well.

What is the key to keeping your stamina between events?

With a meet like this where your races are back-to-back, they’re definitely time-crunching. You’ve got to stay loose, you’ve got to stay stretched out.

I know it was just you swimming individually in the finals, but you’ve always received such a boost from teammates, right?

I’ve got to say without half the guys there I’m not sure I’d be able to push through. We’ve got our tight little family pack there and stick to it.

The only thing better than a St. Charles East-St. Charles North boys basketball postseason rumble is one in which the outcome is completely up for grabs. That’ll be the case tonight when East and North square off in an IHSA Class 4A St. Charles North Regional semifinal.

The teams enter with similar records (North is 16-9; East is 17-11), split their regular season matchups and both bring quality senior leadership that could pay off in a pressure-packed scenario.

There is legitimate optimism on both sides. Here are the top three cases to be made for each team’s prospects to advance to the regional championship game Friday night against South Elgin, which stunned top-seeded Larkin in overtime Tuesday night.

Case for North Stars • Home-court advantage.

OK, the not-so-arduous journey to Red Gate Road probably won’t deter East’s students from flooding enemy territory, but there’s still something to be said for playing on your home floor.

North certainly played much sharper against East at home this season (68-58 North win in December) than when the venues were reversed (9055 East win in January).

• North’s rebounding prowess. The North Stars have one of the area’s most physically rugged frontcourts, with several football/ basketball crossover athletes difficult to outmuscle for position. Jack Callaghan, Garrett

That could pay off handsomely since East can be spotty on the glass. The Saints desperately need one of their frontcourt players to help senior AJ Washington fight for rebounds.

• Dom Adduci’s health.

East coach Pat Woods said Monday night the standout Saints guard will be “fullbore” for tonight’s game, but the senior has played sparingly the past two weeks after spraining his ankle in a game against Elgin.

North is a classy program that no doubt wants to beat East at 100 percent, but from a practical standpoint, if East’s top scorer isn’t quite himself, that obviously helps North’s chances.

Case for Saints • Superior momentum.

East hit a rough patch in late January/early February, losing three games in a row, but the Saints have since straightened out their act to the tune of a five-game winning streak, even with Adduci hobbled.

North, conversely, enters postseason play after consecutive losses to Geneva and West Chicago. The North Stars are capable of bouncing back tonight but East might

have better mojo coming in, especially after successfully dipping its toe into the postseason waters with a play-in game rout of Streamwood on Monday.

• Revenge factor. East and North have plenty of postseason history in recent seasons, but the one freshest in both teams’ minds is last year’s 4A South Elgin Regional semifinal, won by North, 69-53.

It’s a new season, but you can bet East’s numerous returnees from that team are determined not to leave the floor tonight with a similar feeling.

• 3-point shooting. East can over-rely on the 3-point shot at times, but when the Saints are hot, few teams in the state can fill it up like East. North won’t argue that point after East scorched North for 16 3-pointers in the Saints’ January win, and East replicated that lofty output in Monday’s mashing of Streamwood.

Senior Alec Goetz is no slouch from the 3-point line for North, but the Saints simply have more shooters to keep tabs on at the arc.

What’s clear is both teams have plenty to pin their hopes on tonight. That’s what gives this East-North battle the potential to be one of the most fascinating installments of a great crosstown rivalry.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Tyler Flowers is grateful for his second chance. He knows the White Sox didn’t really owe him one after last season.

Handed the starting catcher’s job last spring, Flowers responded by hitting .195 with 10 home runs in 84 games in a season cut short by a right shoulder injury that had bothered him since the fall of 2012 and required surgery in September.

So there’s your built-in excuse: If you’re not healthy, you’re not goTyler ing to be at your Flowers best. The other one is that the Sox’ dreadful hitting woes last season called more attention to his lack of production, added pressure and caused Flowers, who had a track record of being a good hitter in the minors, to press.

But Flowers isn’t into playing the excuse card. He’s just happy to be the catcher to beat in a race with Josh Phegley and perhaps Adrian Nieto.

And he’s happy to be healthy again and hopeful that a more relaxed stance and approach will help him be the hitter he wants to be.

“I’m glad to be back, first of all,” Flowers said Tuesday.

“Glad to be back in a situation where I have a good opportunity to win a job. I can’t say I necessarily I expected it. I hoped for it.”

It’s no secret general manager Rick Hahn covets a longterm solution to the Sox’s catching situation. After freeagent Brian McCann signed with the New York Yankees, Hahn looked around for top young catchers but couldn’t find a good match in a deal. For one thing, there aren’t a lot of good, young catchers. For another, Hahn thought Flowers was worth a second look.

So there you go, Flo. “Understandable either way

from their position,” Flowers said. “I’m just glad to be feeling good. I feel like a new player, so to speak, when you don’t have to deal with significant pain.”

The Sox like the way Flowers, 28, calls a game, handles pitchers and thinks through pitching plans. They also think his blocking, receiving and throwing are adequate.

“He’s a guy that I trust the way he runs a game,” said bench coach Mark Parent, a former catcher. “I’ve said this before: If everyone else is hitting last year, we don’t worry about his offense as much and he doesn’t worry about it as much and he has a decent year.

Everyone starts looking at your weakest link, so to speak. It affected him behind the plate.”

Flowers had a rough day offensively Tuesday, going 0 for 3 with two strikeouts against the Cleveland Indians, but he likes the way he has felt at the plate this spring. He homered to center field against the Texas Rangers’ Neftali Feliz on Sunday and did so on a 2-2 count.

A new stance, which Flowers said took him a while to find, is more comfortable and keeps him in a better mental state to hit.

“Stance is kind of underrated,” he said. “There is a level of comfort for every guy in their stance, and it sets the stage for a guy in his at-bat, being comfortable in seeing the ball, being confident and relaxed.”

Flowers describes it this way: “A wider base. Hands are definitely relaxed. I’m doing a better job getting a good load.

Just really focus on trying to be on time, getting my foot down in a fashion that gives me a chance to swing the bat when I want to. That’s a big aspect for me – to not panic with two strikes and give myself a chance to hit the ball.”

Flowers still thinks he can have a nice career in the majors. But confidence is essential, and it still exists.

“I definitely think I’m capable of being an above-average catcher in this league, without a doubt,” he said. “It’s a matter of doing it, being consistent.”

By GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com MESA, Ariz. – Four years ago, when teenager Starlin Castro got to spring training as the next big shortstop prospect, incumbent Ryan Theriot threw down the nine-word gauntlet: “He’s going to have to come and get it.”

Barely two months later, he did.

Now Castro is the incumbent sidelined with a hamstring injury for the next week or more with the Cubs’ top-ranked, fast-rising prospect Javy Baez off to another strong spring start and nearing a big-league debut – raising eyebrows and cries from Chicago to Mesa to give the new kid a job out of camp.

Castro’s response to the potential drama: Let him play; there’s room for both shortstops in the Cubs’ lineup.

“To help the team win, if you’re there, and I’m there, whatever. I don’t care,” Castro said. “Some people don’t have a good relationship because they’re at the same position. But me and him, no. … We’re good friends. We talk a lot.”

Castro, who on Tues- Starlin Castro day said the hamstring he hurt Sunday already is much better, has seen enough of Baez – and enough undermanned Cubs teams in his four big-league seasons – to encourage the kid to get to the majors as quick as possible.

“I tell him, ‘Play hard and you’ll be up there no matter what,’ ” Castro said. “ ‘I don’t know where, but you’ll be there, because you’ve got great talent and you play the

game the right way.’ ” Castro has the luxury of knowing he doesn’t have to worry about a challenge to his position anytime soon. General manager Jed Hoyer said it the day camp opened, calling the idea of moving Castro from short, “off the table.”

Javy Baez Cubs officials also repeatedly have said Baez will open the season at Triple-A Iowa, as the shortstop there.

“Obviously, for us the idea of Baez is in the future,” manager Rick Renteria said Tuesday. “So right now I’m glad Starlin feels that way, and I’m sure the feeling is mutual.

They both respect each other immensely. Somewhere down the road, when that happens, I’m sure it’ll be nice to see.”

The consensus opinion

among evaluators – and, apparently, guys in the Cubs’ clubhouse – is that Baez’s much-anticipated debut is coming this year.

“I don’t make that decision,” Castro said, “but that can be good for us, if he’s here.

He can hit, no doubt about it.

He’s a good player. Everybody knows that.”

Baez will see time at second and third before he’s done this spring, team officials said, and that likely will offer a blueprint for his eventual debut defensively.

Renteria said the kid whose bat speed has been compared to Gary Sheffield’s still has adjustments to make with big-league-caliber offspeed stuff and work to do defensively.

Others who know the big leagues well, say give the kid a shot to prove he can’t do it.

“I’ve seen enough of Baez to enjoy watching him play,”

veteran pitcher Jeff Samardzija said. “My thing about teammates is I like guys who put everything out on the field and leave it all out there – controlled reckless abandon, I guess you can say I like. And I see that in Baez. He plays with a chip on his shoulder. He has something to prove. I love watching that swing, too.”

Baez, 21, dismisses the socalled drama with Castro – “We need Castro on the team” – and downplays his desire to be in the big leagues on Opening Day. “I’ll be ready when they tell me,” he said.

The only two things for sure right now: Castro won’t need any more than 10 games this spring to be ready for the season, he said – “maybe eight games.”

And, regardless of Castro’s health, the Baez Buzz isn’t going away.

“Obviously, for us the idea of [Javy] Baez is in the future. So right now I’m glad Starlin [Castro] feels that way, and I’m sure the feeling is mutual. They both respect each other immensely. Somewhere down the road, when that happens, I’m sure it’ll be nice to see.” – Rick Renteria, Cubs manager

Lilly hired by Cubs as special assistant

By GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com MESA, Ariz. – At first glance, Ted Lilly’s hiring by the Cubs’ front office as a special assistant looks like a classic popular-ex-player-gets-acushy-retirement gig.

But general manager Jed Hoyer said, “He made it clear right away that he wanted to work and wants to get involved in scouting.”

And if that’s the case, veteran pitcher Jeff Samardzija – who knows Lilly better than anyone else in the clubhouse – says Lilly could give the Cubs something often missing in today’s “advanced” player evaluations.

Lilly was an All-Star for the Cubs who won 15 and 17 games for the 2007-08 playoff

teams, but he probably is best remembered for moments such as the 2007 playoff game when he hurled his glove to the dirt after giving up a homer to Chris Young – or when he smashed a pipe with a bat when the Cubs were eliminated in Los Angeles in 2008 and flooded the visiting dugout at Dodger Stadium.

“That’s just an example of what it’s all about,” said Samardzija, who watched,

impressed, from the dugout.

“Teddy loved to play baseball. I think that goes overlooked sometimes nowadays – what’s a guy’s passion for the game? What does he bring to the game? How much does he want to leave it on the field?

“Teddy left it all out there.

Hopefully, he can take that and turn that into evaluation.

More so than just tools and how hard a guy throws, what’s his makeup as a person and as a player? That’s always very important, and sometimes it’s overlooked – more so overlooked nowadays with all the numbers and computers that play into the game.”

Theo Epstein’s state-ofthe-art, tech-savvy front office, for instance, whiffed on second-chance projects with

classic, “toolsy” prototype players Ian Stewart and Chris Volstad – both of whom came with well-documented red flags and became quickly and glaringly apparent with the Cubs.

“Sometimes there’s another aspect to it that doesn’t show up on the screen,” Samardzija said.

Hoyer said that Lilly’s personality was one of the appeals when he and Epstein began talking to the just-retired ex-Cub during Cubs Convention.

“We faced him a lot with the Red Sox when he was in Toronto, and I love the way he competes,” Hoyer said.

“And obviously, his reputation with the Cubs is sterling, which is fantastic, not only as a person but as a competitor.”

Lilly is expected to take both amateur and pro scouting assignments, along with possible direct work with young players, although his exact role and schedule is fluid for now – to be determined in part by how much time he can spare from two young kids at home (and a third on the way).

“I feel like I have something to offer, and this is the organization that I’d prefer to be with, so it worked out,” he said. “Certainly, I’d like to be around as often as possible.”

One more selling point, said Hoyer: “I do like the fact that he was with a Cubs team that won 97 games and had success. As you’re trying to figure out how to build a winner in Chicago, he’s a guy that was part of it.”

‘The Lunchbox’: Romance with a dash of regret

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post In Ritesh Batra’s beguiling romance “The Lunchbox,” a virtual relationship blossoms not through a sexy operating system as in “Her,” or modern-day epistolary as in “You’ve Got Mail,” but the old-fashioned way, through carefully written notes delivered by hand every day.

The conceit isn’t nearly as archaic as it sounds. In Mumbai, where this touching story takes place, millions of people still get their noontime lunches courtesy of “dabbawallahs,” deliverymen who shuttle stacked metal cans from home to office and back again using an elaborate, color-coded system. The technique is so foolproof that it was even studied by Harvard Business School.

What university researchers discovered was that the odds of a wrongful delivery are something like a million to one. That tantalizing blip was all Batra needed to construct a love story with all the charm of 1940’s “Shop Around the Corner” and all the contemporary resonance of “Slumdog Millionaire.” Even more commendably, the filmmaker – here making a bracingly assured debut – stays true to his characters throughout the story, which, despite its classic contours, still manages to hold one or two genuine surprises.

Newcomer Nimrat Kaur plays Ila, a young homemaker whose attempts at creating delicious lunches go chronically unnoticed by her workaholic husband.

(Among the film’s many charms are the scenes of her cooking; you can almost smell the delectable spices wafting up from her pot.)

When one of her meals accidentally goes to a middle manager named Sajaan (Irrfan Khan), the two strike up a tentative correspondence. Khan is by now familiar to American viewers from HBO’s “In Treatment” and last year’s “Life of Pi.” He’s an actor whose doleful expression and sensitive demeanor win almost instant identification from the audience.

Together with Kaur – a theater actress who has a promising future in front of the camera – Khan fully and sympathetically inhabits what could have been simply a gimmicky conceit.

Even though much of “The Lunchbox” transpires in Ila’s kitchen (where she conducts another virtual relationship, with her “auntie” upstairs, by way

of yelling through the window) and in Sajaan’s office, Batra nonetheless plunges the audience into the riotous city life of Mumbai, where we follow Sajaan onto crowded buses and streets to his lonely apartment and where Ila barely ventures forth. What begins as a nagging sense of dissatisfaction eventually reveals the deeper, sorrowful reality of a woman’s life in India, as Ila’s hopes for her future became increasingly thwarted and constrained.

“The Lunchbox” probably shouldn’t be called a romantic comedy – there’s too much regret and longing at the core of its protagonists to qualify for that – but it does have comic elements, including Ila’s confiding

conversations with her upstairs neighbor and an eager young colleague of Sajaan’s, played by an effervescent Nawazuddin Siddiqui. His character, Shaikh, is a survivor of Mumbai’s streets, here depicted as teeming with life and color, even as the inhabitants live in crushing loneliness. Through a simple, even fanciful story, Batra communicates the essence of that dichotomy, leaving the audience with a fragile sense of hope in the midst of otherwise dizzying indifference.

• “The Lunchbox” received three out of four stars. The film is rated PG and contains thematic material and smoking. It’s in English and Hindi with subtitles. It runs 104 minutes.

Girl who loves troubled boy can’t save him Dear Abby: My 13-year-old daughter, “Lizzie,” continues to talk to a 14-year-old boy who is very controlling and abusive to her. I made her stop talking to him, took away her cellphone privileges, and tried to show her how wrong he was for her and that she was going to wind up very hurt.

After recently giving her the cellphone back, I learned last night that Lizzie has been talking to him and lying to me about it. He sent her a text that if she didn’t answer his call within seven minutes, he was either going to shoot himself or cut himself. He included a picture of his arm with a knife held against it. She thinks that her compliance is all that’s standing in the way of this boy killing himself.

I’m scared for her safety, but she won’t listen to me because she “loves” him. When I called the boy’s mother about it, she became defensive and accused me of implying she was a bad mother. Please tell me how to handle this. – Worried Mom In

As long as Lizzie sees herself as a hero who is saving his life by sacrificing hers, he won’t get the help he needs. So if she REALLY cares about him – and I have no doubt she does – she will end the relationship because it isn’t a healthy one for either of them.

Treating sleep apnea can also lower blood pressure Dear Doctor K: I’m a snorer. I read recently that treating snoring can affect blood pressure. Can you explain the connection?

Dear Reader: Severe snoring can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). If you have OSA, then your breathing is blocked temporarily several (sometimes hundreds) of times per night.

What happens is that muscles in your upper airway (the back of the throat) relax too much. Normally, these muscles hold your airway open, so that air moves in and out of your lungs without obstruction.

When your breathing is blocked, oxygen levels in your lungs and blood start falling.

Your brain sees this happening and causes adrenaline to surge into your bloodstream. This stimulates the breathing center in your brain: It’s a “breathe now!” signal. You awaken briefly and gasp for air before falling back to sleep.

That’s bad enough. But surges of adrenaline also make your heart beat faster and raise your blood pressure. As a result, your blood pressure swings up and down.

Some people have what’s called treatment-resistant hyper-

It turns out that many people with treatment-resistant hypertension also have OSA. A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that treating OSA can help people with high blood pressure that’s difficult to control. In the study, researchers provided 12 weeks of the standard treatment for OSA to nearly 200 men and women with OSA and treatment-resistant hypertension.

The standard treatment was continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). With CPAP, you wear a mask that covers your nose. A small machine delivers continuous air pressure that prevents the collapse of your airway during sleep.

After 12 weeks of CPAP, average blood pressures were a few ticks lower. Study participants also had healthier nighttime blood pressure patterns. The

improvements, though modest, are still important.

Many people find CPAP uncomfortable. As a result, they use CPAP inconsistently, or not at all.

The key is to find a mask you like. These days, you can choose from a variety of mask options, including nasal masks, fullface masks and twin tubes that deliver air to each nostril. If you don’t like the first mask you try, keep at it. You may have to try several different masks until you find one you can live – and sleep – with.

Given that we spend about a third of our entire lives asleep, it’s not surprising that our sleep could affect our health.

Many studies show that getting enough good quality sleep on a regular basis brings many health benefits. It protects against heart disease and diabetes, and perhaps against dementia as well. Sleep experts generally recommend an average of seven to eight hours of good quality sleep each night as the target to shoot for.

Teen tired of constantly arguing with boyfriend Dr. Wallace: I’m 18, and my boyfriend is a year older. We have been dating for about nine months. Dear Anonymous: According to a study conducted by a Penn State University research team, the majority of marijuana users (69 percent) do not “advance” to hard drugs, such as cocaine or heroin. But of those who presently use hard drugs, 98 percent also use, or have used, marijuana.

The study also found that regular (at least one joint per week) users of marijuana have the habit for six years before quitting. The addicted cigarette smoker continues his habit for over 20 years.

The auction might have gone several ways. North chose to show both of his suits (three clubs was game-forcing), then jumped to five hearts to try to highlight his diamond void and ask for good trumps. South’s three-diamond cue-bid asked his partner to bid three notrump with a diamond stopper.

Then, over three spades, he gave preference to clubs. If North had now bid six clubs, he would have made that slam easily, taking three spades, three hearts and six clubs. Also, North could have deduced that South held strong hearts when he did not bid three no-trump.

Declarer must resist the temptation of an overtrick. If hearts are breaking 3-2, South can take 16 (!) tricks: three spades, five hearts, six clubs and two diamond ruffs in the dummy. But if South ruffs the opening lead on the board and tries to draw trumps by cashing two top hearts immediately, he will fail.

Instead, declarer should lead a trump from the board at trick two and play low from his hand.

In that way, he retains a heart in the dummy to ruff another diamond, and he can then safely draw trumps before running the clubs.

Finally, note that if West had led his singleton spade, South probably would have failed. He would have needed mirrors to get home. The curious can work it out.

Program packs up comfort into bag MAPLE PARK – When a family friend was stuck in a hospital fighting against cancer, Paige Gilson learned how important a simple bag filled with supplies could be.

Gilson, a junior at Kaneland High School, has adopted the “Comfort in a Canvas Bag” program for a group at the school – Prevention Of Dangerous Activities. Gilson is the president of PODA. Gilson and PODA group members have been assembling items into bags, which are meant to be distributed to cancer patients.

Gilson said one bag has been delivered to a classmate at Kaneland who has been fighting cancer.

Gilson said the bags are often filled with a blanket, fuzzy socks and a notebook, among other items, “things that would make you feel appreciated and would make you forget you are in a hospital.”

Gilson said the family friend, Tammy White, died a few years ago, but Gilson said White enjoyed receiving the bag.

“It made her feel so loved and so happy,” Gilson said.

“She wanted to start spreading that.”

Gilson said the PODA group previously had assembled the bags as a project but had not done it for a few years.

HorsePower Therapeutic Riding seeks volunteers MAPLE PARK – HorsePower Therapeutic Riding is seeking volunteers, ages 14 and older.

The organization teaches horseback riding lessons to children and adults with physical, cognitive and emotional disabilities. Volunteers are needed for grooming, tacking, training, leading and side-walking assignments.

A volunteer orientation session is set from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. March 18 at Fox Chase Farm, 46W276 Route 38, Maple Park. On March 3, students and staff at Kaneland Harter Middle School gathered in the gym for a Winter Recognition Pep Rally. It was an exciting assembly and an opportunity to reflect on the great accomplishments of our middle school students and staff.

March is Middle Level Education Month and exciting news was shared with the students and staff. Kaneland Harter Middle School has received the Illinois New Horizon Skills to Watch designation and is now among one hundred and fifteen exemplary middle-grade school across the nation. (www.schoolstowatch.org) In addition to the designation news, Mrs.Debra Martenson was honored as the Middle School Distinguished Educator of the Year nominee for her commitment to middle level students and her passion for education. This award is sponsored by the Association of Middle Level Education.

Students who earned perfect scores from the 2012-13 school year were acknowledged and the students were pumped up at this schoolwide pep assembly. Teams of students participated in an ISAT relay race reinforcing sound preparation strategies in a fun way.

Other students and groups were recognized including the HMS Jazz Band which was recently honored in Peoria by performing at the Illinois Music Educator Association. In addition, the girls’ basketball teams led by Coach Tom Huels and Coach Melissa Frankel were honored for their accomplishments. In addition, eighth grader Reaghan Maloney was honored for her first place handbook cover design that was selected in a school-wide contest.

The efforts put forth by the students and staff at Kaneland Harter Middle School on a daily basis are greatly appreciated. Their commitment to becoming college, career and community ready is evident in the day to day experiences that occur within the learning environment.
