A

s an age-group swimmer starting at age 7, and then swimming through my junior year of high school, I have always loved the Illinois state meet, which took place last weekend.

The energy is electric as each team’s cheering section takes its designated spot in the stands, and the pool deck is filled with swimmers, coaches, officials and the media.

Every year, I reminisce about my own past races (never at the state level, mind you) and replay each lap in my head.

That is until I need to keep track of dozens of swimmers I need to photograph.

I’m also there as an unbiased journalist, with no actual cheering going on.

This year was harder than ever to suppress my excitement and hold back my tears as my alma mater leapt into the pool holding the state championship trophy after the meet Saturday. It was the first win for Lyons Township,

and I could not be more proud to have been an extremely small part of the L.T. swimming community so many years ago.

Lauzen: Perhaps county credit cards should be removed Chairman suggests discontinuing the cards if county law does not allow regulating them

bschory@shawmedia.com If Kane County officials legally cannot have a strict policy regulating the use of their credit cards, then perhaps they should not allow county credit cards at all, Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said Thursday.

Lauzen was responding to a legal opinion from Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon that a proposed resolution to regulate credit card use among elected county officials largely is illegal and exceeds the County Board’s authority.

“The bottom line is – and I don’t mean to be harsh – but to have a credit card is not a fundamental constitutional right in America,” Lauzen said.

“And if we are going to have a meaningful policy, the first thing is not to have a government-issued credit card,” Lauzen added. “If we are not going to have stringent control over the use of credit cards, then one of the options

Russell said he paid the county back out of his own funds “because I wanted this to be over.”

Lauzen characterized Russell’s use of the credit card in that instance for “personal expenses of campaign material” and that Russell paid it back because he knew it was wrong. Russell disputed that.

“It was stuff to hand out at National Night Out, safety items, like blinkers, that the state’s attorney said was legal to buy,” Russell said. “Part of my job is prevention … death prevention. It was not a personal thing.”

Russell said Lauzen circulates promotional cards with his name on them as well, but Lauzen said he pays for the items personally. Lauzen provided an invoice to prove he pays for them.

As to the possibility of not having a county credit card at all, Russell said it would be up to Lauzen.

“That’s his decision,” Russell said.

“The law says they have to provide for us reasonably to do our job. And part of my job is death prevention, and that is what I used those items for – to help make my office approachable and have things to give to kids and help them to be seen late at night.”

CHAIRMAN RACE NEARS FINISH LINE Lauzen, Shepro clash in quest to lead Kane County Board

asloboda@shawmedia.com Kane County voters have less than two weeks to decide whether they want a change in county government leadership.

Voters might support County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen in his quest for a second term, or they might support his challenger, Ken Shepro, in the Republican primary on March 15.

With no Democrat yet in the race for chairman, voters in the primary might very well select the county’s next leader.

Lauzen, a former state senator from Aurora, said he wants to continue the teamwork among county leaders. He said accomplishments in his first term include cutting the county’s debt in half and es- Chris Lauzen tablishing reserves for future emergencies and to protect the property tax levy freeze, which has been in effect throughout his tenure.

“We have to stop taxing people out of their homes in Illinois,” he said.

Shepro – a Wayne resident who served as the County Board’s attorney under Lauzen’s predecessor – said his opponent is riding the coattails of the previ- Ken Shepro ous administration on financial issues such as the strong bond rating and levy freeze.

“His predecessor started it,” Shepro said of the frozen levy. “He simply said, ‘Me, too.’ ” Noting that personnel costs have increased under Lauzen’s tenure, Shepro said the county can’t keep increasing costs and expect to maintain a frozen levy.

“We need to have an honest conversation with the public and the taxpayers about slogans like, ‘freeze the levy,’ ” Shepro said.

Lauzen said Kane County has proven that taxes can be controlled through better management of resources and not through cuts in services. It is important to set a clear goal and rally consensus around that goal, he said, adding that coop-

As the state budget impasse continues, Lauzen said Kane County can do its best to provide a good example of how government can work.

He cited the board’s work last year on the resolution to support reform in Springfield, which passed, 21-3, and “had substance to it.”

Each of the four wards would include a portion of the downtown, in contrast to the existing situation in which most of the central business district is within a single ward.

Hohmann noted that Batavia’s council is larger than other similarly sized communities. He contends that a group with more than 10 people is unwieldy and noted that aldermanic elections frequently produce uncontested races.

Another alternative would be to wait until the 2020 census, when aldermen could adjust the size of the council by ordinance, Seckel said.

Second Ward Alderman Martin Callahan, who indicated support for a referendum, said he wants the city to keep the ward system.

Brown said that if discussion is being inhibited by the council’s size, aldermen should return to the system of separate, smaller committees, rather than the existing committee of the whole in which all 14 aldermen participate.

Sixth Ward Alderman Michael Russotto said he does not believe a smaller council would result in more contested races.

First Ward Alderman Carl Fischer said there is no reason to change and, in particular, objected to an at-large system.

Seventh Ward Alderman Drew McFadden said the city should maintain the ward system.

Hohmann indicated after the meeting that he was pleased that the council had at least discussed his idea.

Twenty years ago, most cars were equipped with “squealers,” which warned drivers when their cars’ brake pads were wearing down and needed replacing, explains Chris Urben, manager and master mechanic, Geneva Repair Shop in Batavia.

“Many newer cars aren’t equipped with this alert feature. Other than losing braking power, the better way to tell when your brakes need service, is bringing it to a repair shop for routine inspections and periodic maintenance.”

He adds that some current car models have brake sensors, which flash a dashboard warning light to signal problems.

Urben advises drivers to have their brakes checked every 10,000 miles, or when your tires are rotated at six-month intervals. Brake pads typically last between 20,000 to 40,000 miles, depending on driving conditions. “City drivers experiencing heavy stop-and-go traffic may need to replace their brake pads sooner

than drivers on the open highway. Drivers who stop smoothly instead of slamming on their brakes usually see better wear on their brake pads.”

What is a brake pad? Urben explains that there are usually two brake pads on each wheel, which may be visible through the wheel if the hubcap isn’t solid metal.

The steel-backed pads are usually four by two inches large, padded with a ceramic-like material. When that material wears down to less than one-fourth-inch thick, it will need replacing.

A thinning or chipped brake pad won’t work properly with the brake system, and can impair braking ability. Caution signs include feeling vibrations in the brake pedal or vibrations in the steering when braking.

Urben adds, “Drivers can miss some telltale signs in the winter, as we drive with our windows up and can’t hear trouble sounds as easily. Any grinding or squealing sounds should be investigated for safety.”

BATAVIA – City aldermen were unable to reach a consensus when discussing a proposal to reduce the size of the Batavia City Council.

At a committee meeting earlier this week, aldermen considered a plan put forth by 7th Ward Alderman Kyle Hohmann, who favors putting a referendum on the ballot to shrink the council to 10 members from the current total of 14.

But many aldermen said they believe there is no reason to make the change and that having 14 members ensures good representation for residents. The proposal was tabled.

“We really need a compelling reason, and I don’t think we’ve identified it,” 5th Ward Alderman Lucy Thelin Atac said.

Geneva offers sergeant $18K in separation deal

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The city of Geneva is poised to pay $18,000 to police Sgt. Timothy Baker, a 31-year employee, to leave the city’s employ and release the city from all legal or financial claims.

Terms of the voluntary separation agreement were released through a Freedom of Information Act request.

The Geneva City Council voted, 101, to authorize the agreement at a special meeting this week, but it would not go into effect until Baker signs it and it is “approved by a court of competent jurisdiction.”

The city has not yet provided details about what a “court of competent jurisdiction” refers to.

According to the agreement, at the effective date of his retirement, Baker will “draft and issue a notice to the city stating that he voluntarily and irrevocably retires from his position ... as of a date a court approves this agreement.”

The $18,000 would be paid in a lump sum for all benefits accrued, pursuant

to city policy, according to the agreement.

The agreement and payout to Baker “does not constitute and shall not be interpreted as an admission of liability on the party of the city,” according to the agreement.

Baker has up to 21 days to sign the agreement and is entitled to seven days after that to reconsider and revoke his signature, according to the agreement.

The dispute with city administrators was over Baker seeking a second position with the police department as a community service officer after he retired. He aired the dispute at a City Council meeting that took place April 6, 2015.

Baker said officials had told him it would be “unethical” to hire him as they were trying to get state laws changed to prevent “double-dipping.”

“This would have been a win-win situation for the city and for Tim Baker and his family,” Baker had said at the meeting.

Mayor Kevin Burns said during that meeting that aldermen should “not engage in conversation with Sgt. Baker regarding this matter.”

“This is an administrative decision,” Burns said at the time. “This

rests squarely on administrative staff.”

According to a 2015 Freedom of Information Act request, Baker was hired on Oct. 2, 1984, and was earning nearly $105,000 as a base salary as of 2015.

The salary range for community service officers in 2015 was $39,838 to $56,715, also according to the request.

Baker had received the department’s Exceptional Duty Award in 2014 for his decades of service with the Greater Fox Valley Chapter of Operation Snowball.

Local students put creations to test in robotics competition

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Robotics have long moved past just the realm of science fiction, industrial assembly lines and surgical procedures.

Today, building and operating a robot presents inquisitive young minds with the opportunity to solve problems and train for careers.

Students from around the area – including a group of high school students from Batavia and North Aurora – will put their robotic creations to the test during a state competition Saturday.

“What we learn can be directly applied to what people do in the robotics field,” said Batavia High School sophomore Evan Pasero, 15, who has been involved with robotics since fifth grade.

“It’s helped me grow as an individual.”

Pasero and his teammates design, build, program and operate robots that look like erector sets from the 1960s but with radio controls, computer brains and a mechanical sophistication that allows them to perform complex tasks.

They will compete in the Illinois VEX Robotics State Competition for middle school and high school students, and hosted by Fox Valley Robotics and Batavia Robotics.

The competition will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Rotolo Middle School, 1501 S. Raddant Road, Batavia. Admission is free.

Members of the team also include: • Phil McKneight 17, a junior at BHS. He’s already a member of the Civilian Air Patrol and wants to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.

• Sam Atac, 17, a junior at BHS. He’s worked as an intern at Fermilab and wants to pursue computer science in college.

A pair of robots, measuring no more than 18 inches square, as per competition rules, zipped around Zinser’s basement floor, gobbling up rubber balls and then lofting them at a target.

“We often take the robots apart, because we see a better way of doing things,” Zinser said, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the work. “It’s nice to have as much success as we do.”

Indeed, VEX championship banners hang from the walls in Zinser’s home, a reflection of past success for the group.

“The competition should be pretty stiff this year,” Atac said.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – For St. Charles Township resident Kristie Stock Domain, the Fox River Bluff East Forest Preserve is more than a property that neighbors hers.

The “very untouched” piece of land is not only home to much wildlife, she said, but it also offers daily exploration for her three young sons.

“We call it our enchanted forest,” Stock Domain said.

She and other Fox River Estates residents, including Mark Schmit, are rallying to protect Fox River Bluff East from potential development and use by the Saint Charles Rowing Club. They want the Kane County Forest Preserve Commission to revoke an agreement it made with the rowing club in 2014.

The rowing club someday wants to move from shared facilities at Fer-

son Creek Park in St. Charles to Fox River Bluff East, which is near St. Charles North High School.

Under the agreement, the nonprofit may install docks, create an asphalt drive and parking lot, and construct a storage building and boathouse.

Stock Domain and Schmit said the agreement never should have been signed because it violates the forest preserve district’s mission and ultimate goal of preserving and restoring the nature of Kane County.

They stressed they would feel the same if an organization other than the rowing club were involved.

As of Thursday morning, nearly 1,200 people supported their cause through an online petition at Change.org, which is in addition to a hard-copy petition Schmit said he began last fall.

Mandatory legroom on your next flight? An awful idea

Airline passengers are being packed into planes “like sardines,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer. So he wants the Federal Aviation Administration to set minimum seat-size guidelines. The point, Schumer suggested, is to right an injustice: “It’s just plain unfair that a person gets charged for extra inches that were once standard.”

In other words: Everyone soon could get a government-mandated upgrade.

It’s a crowd-pleasing proposal that might also have some safety benefits. But like so many alleged giveaways for today’s harried travelers, this one won’t come free.

In the past decade, airlines have become profitable partly by packing more fliers onto each plane. Although that hasn’t always been comfortable for the passengers, it works in their interest by enabling carriers to offer more affordable flights than ever. Reconfiguring cabins will threaten that model and impose new costs that will be passed onto customers, who might soon be wishing for less legroom.

There’s no question economy-class passengers have less room these days. Between 1985 and 2014, for example, the widest pitch offered by United Airlines shrunk from 36 inches to 31. Discount carriers such as Spirit Airlines have narrowed the space to as little as 28 inches – an unheard-of squeeze three decades ago.

What caused the shrinkage? Competition, and the rise of “low-cost carriers,” which pack more seats into planes, lure customers with cheap fares and then nickel-and-dime them for things such as checked bags and bottled water. They’re popular to complain about, but passengers can’t resist them: They make up 26 percent of the North American airline market and play a crucial role in holding down prices.

So, if seat size and fares have shrunk more or less in parallel, what happens if the FAA starts requiring more legroom? Could Spirit be as profitable, and offer fares as cheap, if the distance between its seats was 31 inches rather than 28? Based on the 26-row configuration posted to the website SeatGuru, such a change likely would force the airline to lose at least two rows of seats, along with their associated revenue. With oil prices low, perhaps Spirit could manage such a challenge. But when they bounce back, that extra legroom surely will be a threat to low fares.

In January, the travel website Skift attempted to calculate the cost of additional legroom and recline on a passenger jet flying in the competitive North Atlantic region (for example, London to New York). The conclusion: $33 per inch, or $13.33 per degree of recline. In effect, many economy-class passengers have the option to make that purchase by upgrading to an “economy-plus” seat with six inches of extra legroom for about 18 percent over the price of normal economy, the site estimates.

Notably, Skift’s analysis leads it to conclude that “passengers don’t value extra room as much as low fares.”

Will they value that room if it improves safety? Last year, FAA researchers conceded that they lacked data on whether airplanes with less than 31 inches of pitch can be evacuated safely in an emergency. But with the accident rate for commercial aviation far below that for cars, buses and subways, it’s questionable whether air travelers would be willing to pay a premium for what likely would be a marginal improvement in safety. After all, only 7 percent of travelers regularly buy travel insurance.

To the Editor: I want to thank Chris Lauzen, Kane County Board chairman, for keeping his word to not raise the Kane County portion of our real estate taxes and for persuading the Kane County Forest Preserve District to not raise our taxes.

Lauzen, with the help and cooperation of the County Board, also reduced the county debt by $48 million. Lauzen has many more accomplishments that have

saved the taxpayers money, but the bottom line for me is no rise in taxes!

I also want to thank Terry Hunt, Kane County auditor, for red flagging the $5,780 of taxpayer money that Kane County Coroner Rob Russell spent on “various promotional items” with a county credit card. Mr. Hunt refused to pay it, and Russell finally reimbursed the county with personal funds.

Beebe, ‘one of us,’ comes home Former NFLer inspires alma mater at school assembly

kdruley@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland alumnus Don Beebe, one of three NFL players to appear in six Super Bowls, delivered an all-school assembly address at his alma mater Thursday afternoon.

It was the final item on Kaneland’s agenda before a three-day weekend, so some of the program inevitably intersected with teenage angst, even though a golden football was involved.

As the guest of honor reminded the student body of its potential to emerge from a small, partially rural community to achieve something in any field, several audience members rapidly internalized the message. Sophomore Matthew Olson, a would-be Beebe? Hey, why not?

“It’s pretty cool that a guy from Kaneland accomplished all that,” Olson said. “We all look up to him. I mean, every year, you go watch the Super Bowl.

You’ve got all those parties. And then he was actually in it. He was from Kaneland. He was one of us.”

‘IT’S BEEN A JOY’

Hawks bond, blend, win

kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Four seasons, five schools, one blissfully amalgamated club boys hockey team.

Approaching perhaps the most monumental weekend in the organization’s history, that’s the rock-solid stance of the Fox Valley Hawks and the athletes from St. Charles East, St. Charles North, Geneva, Batavia and Kaneland who unite their front.

“I’ve made a lot of friends from different schools,” said defenseman Zack Rittenberg, a Geneva junior.

“There might be rivalries and stuff, but that all goes away when we’re on the same team.”

The Hawks compete in the Varsity Combined Division of the statewide Blackhawk Cup playoffs, and are one of the tournament’s final 16 teams who make a habit of playing nice on ice.

At 1:55 p.m. Saturday, the ninth-seeded Hawks will face No. 8 Wheaton West – comprised of players from Wheaton Warrenville South, Wheaton North, West Chicago, Wheaton Academy and St. Francis – at The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.

At 3:20 p.m. Sunday, they’ll host Leyden at Geneva’s Fox Valley Ice Arena in an Illinois Suburban Hockey League Cougar Cup game.

“We’re kind of used to it all,” said Gio Pompilio, a senior forward from St. Charles East. “The three-game weekends are definitely the hardest.

This one’s two, so it’s still going to be hard, but we can manage.”

In the summer of 2012, Hawks brass asked prospective players to embrace a similarly go-getting attitude. Someone was stirring the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois’ pot of alphabet soup once more.

Two seasons earlier, East and North joined forces for a St. Charles co-op, then welcomed players from Burlington Central and Hampshire in 2011-12. Batavia boasted a co-op program that also harbored Aurora Christian, Aurora Central Catholic, Kaneland and Oswego athletes, while Geneva was combined with Barlett, West Chicago and the Wheaton schools.

Waning participation made coops necessary, but the AHAI’s redistricting plan helped bring better geographical balance.

A handful of seniors, including Pompilio and left wing Trevor Kurtzhals of St. Charles North, the team captain, are in their fourth seasons with the Hawks.

“That was the transition, my first year over. It was really easy because none of us played with each other before. We didn’t play with each oth-

er separate,” Pompilio said. “When it was East vs. North, and then they combined, it was really hard for them.

Now we all just get along. We’re really fine with each other because we grew up playing with each other. We came up as a team. We’ve all known each other since freshman year, so it’s cool. It’s easy to get along.”

Thanks largely to positive wordof-mouth from players, parents and alumni – “We let our program sell itself,” second-year coach Phil Gabrielsen said – the Hawks have welcomed an influx of players through the years.

Between the varsity and junior varsity – which also skates in separate postseason tournament games Friday and Saturday – 38 athletes populate the roster.

Gabrielsen and Co. expect another increase when spring evaluations begin this month. Should the Hawks keep winning, they’ll be caught in another happy overlap: Balancing the 2015-16 postseason with 2016-17 optimism.

“It feels like it’s definitely gone

fast, but it’s been a joy and a lot of fun,” Kurtzhals said. “We have a great team this year and have really ended up doing pretty well so far.

Hopefully, we can continue that in the playoffs here.”

Behind four goals from St. Charles East junior Josh Gadow and a sprawling effort from senior goaltender Aaron Karkos of Batavia, the Hawks rolled past Lane Tech, 4-1, in last week’s Blackhawk Cup opener.

Gabrielsen and his staff have pored over film of Wheaton West, but the Hawks did not oppose the club during the regular season. Pompilio knows a couple players from his developmental days, while Gadow consulted a friend from a different team for a scouting report.

It seems collaboration follows the Hawks wherever they go. Now comes the continuation of the ultimate project – conspiring on a deep postseason run.

“I think we’re coming in pretty good this weekend,” Kurtzhals said.

“Just give it our all and see what happens.”

ST. CHARLES – After a few days of non-stop, intense boys basketball at the IHSA Class 4A St. Charles East Regional, we have two teams matched up for the final.

After winning the Upstate Eight Conference River Division title in the regular season, Batavia earned the regional’s top seed and held off a feisty St Charles North team in Tuesday’s regional semifinal to punch its ticket to today’s final.

The host Saints defeated Geneva in what has been the top game of the regional, thus far.

Batavia and East split their regular season meetings, each winning at home. Batavia will try for its first regional title under coach Jim Nazos and first since the 2005-06 season, while coach Pat Woods and the Saints will aim to capture the program’s first since 2006-07.

Here are a few things to watch for tonight: Finding other ways to win: East’s re-

liance on the 3-point basket may have seemed overstated during the regular season, but upon further review, that’s not the case for this team.

Sure, the Saints have made their fair share of long distance baskets this season, but on Wednesday against Geneva, they connected on just 2 of 6 attempts but came away with a 48-45 victory.

The same can be said for Batavia and standout senior guard Canaan Coffey, who recently was tabbed as a UEC River all-conference first team selection. Coffey has had his fair share of mid-20-point games in which he has shined from long range to help the Bulldogs win, but it’s not a necessity.

“They believe in their system so much,” Woods said of Batavia. “They execute their game plans so well, that even if you take away one thing, they find other ways to beat you.”

Coffey scored 13 points in the Bulldogs’ semifinal win over North, but tallied just six points on 2 of 10 shooting in Batavia’s 50-40 loss to East on Feb. 24.

DiLeonardi vs. Coffey: One of the reasons why Coffey was limited in his production Feb. 24 was the fact he couldn’t go anywhere without East senior Evan DiLeonardi right in his face.

The two have played against each other since grade school, and Coffey expects to be seeing a lot of one of the better defenders in the area tonight.

Senior realization: DiLeonardi cracked a smile when asked what changed from the first half of the Geneva game, when he took off and was a big reason behind the Saints advancing.

Was it something said to him at halftime? No, just the realization of what a loss meant for his high school basketball career.

“It kind of hits you eventually that it’s the playoffs and I’m a senior,” DiLeonardi said. “You realize if you lose, that’s it, you know. So it’s sort of a desperation and you can’t be passive.

You don’t want to leave the court with regrets when you’re season is over, thinking, ‘I could have done this,’ or, ‘I

could have done that.’ ” Coffey, an Indiana-Wesleyan basketball commit, feels much the same as the teams vie for a spot in next week’s Rock Valley College Sectional.

Casey’s key: Tempo and defensive patience. For me, it’s as simple as that.

These two teams play a very different style, as the Saints like to get out and run while Batavia would be comfortable slowing down the pace with drawn-out possessions. If East can have patience on those long Bulldog possessions and force them to take a difficult shot, East should like its chances.

Batavia hasn’t lost too many games when Coffey scores in the 20s, but keeping East out of transition will be vital.

The Saints got going against Geneva when they got some turnovers or long rebounds and got out and ran. They’ll look to follow that path tonight.

SPORTS BRIEF 16 Frazier earns AP all-state nod

Batavia senior Hannah Frazier added to her girls basketball accolades Thursday, as she was named to the Associated Press Class 4A All-State First Team.

Frazier received 71 of a possible 90 votes to make first team, joining unanimous selection Ali Andrews (Huntley), Kiara Lewis (Whitney Young), Kathleen Doyle (Benet) and Jeannie Boehm (New Trier).

A St. Louis recruit, Frazier averaged 22.3 points, 8.9 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.3 assists for the Bulldogs while shooting 80 percent from the free throw line and 56 percent from the floor.

Geneva junior forward/center Grace Loberg was a Class 4A honorable mention. Both Frazier and Loberg are finalists for Ms. Basketball Illinois.

In Class 3A, Burlington Central senior Kayla Ross was named AP Class 3A AllState second team, while classmate Sam Pryor received honorable mention.

Continued from page 13 Beebe wore No. 82 in 116 games with the Bills, Packers and Carolina Panthers for an elementary reason: The Bills selected him 82nd overall in the third round of the 1989 NFL Draft.

Longtime Kaneland English teacher Kurt Green sported a green, home Beebe Packers jersey Thursday, which included a minutes-old autograph on the numbers. Green arrived at Kaneland a few years after Beebe graduated but has been a lifelong Packers fan.

Green’s relatives in Union Grove, Wisconsin own a dairy farm in which “there’s a TV in every room, in every barn,” Green said.

Current Knights football coach Tom Fedderly, an assistant to Thorgesen before taking the program’s reins in 2007, grew up northwest of Union Grove, in Wisconsin Dells. Another Packer backer, Fedderly proudly transported the Super Bowl XXXII jersey to the Kaneland athletic office after the assembly.

Fedderly also fondly recalls Super Bowl XXXI, played after the 1996 season. The only Super Bowl in which Beebe was on the winning side saw Packers Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre hand Beebe the game ball after the final snap.

“That was a great one. That was awesome,” Fedderly said. “I’ve got that hat at home.”

While Beebe saluted the Packers fans in attendance while playfully

razzing those who root for the Bears, he stressed that grit and perseverance translate regardless of athletic interest and acumen. Beebe credited his parents, Don Sr. and Barb, who both were in attendance, for instilling his work ethic.

Beebe also reiterated an undying appreciation for his high school coaches – Thorgesen, Bob Pederson (basketball) and Ralph Drendel (track).

“It’s inspiring how he was presenting, saying that he’s just one of us,” said sophomore Blake Feiza, also a basketball call-up. “That really got to me. Because I could do something with my life, then. That really shows it. Because, you know, all the teachers say that you can do whatever you can put your mind to. But he actually did, which is pretty cool.”

Beebe’s wife, Diana, and three of the couple’s four children proudly looked on from a front row seat, flanked by dozens of people who could corroborate their husband and father’s glory days.

He may not have spouted decades-old scores and statistics as readily as Beebe, but Pederson noted how “Donnie” the shooting guard led the Little Seven Conference in scoring as a senior. Beebe was the Knights’ sixth man during his junior season of 198182, when the program advanced to the state tournament.

“What a blessing,” Pederson said, “to have five seniors and then your first guy off the bench is Don Beebe. …

You always knew that you had Beebe

sitting there, ready to play. It was kind of a luxury, because he was a fine, fine basketball player. But he’s just a great guy.”

Super Bowl XXXII marked Beebe’s final NFL appearance. He remains an assistant for the Aurora Christian football team, which he guided to IHSA Class 3A state championships in 2011 and 2012, but stepped away from the head coaching role to spend more time with family.

Beebe wanted to have more time to watch his son, Chad – another wide receiver who wears No. 82 – play for Northern Illinois.

Beebe’s parents still live in Sugar Grove, where the family relocated in 1969. For the past 13 years, Don Beebe Sr. has driven a school bus for Kaneland District 302.

“A lot of people come up to me. ‘Are you Don Beebe’s dad?’ Yeah, I am,” Beebe Sr. said. “People I’ve never even seen. The name is still out there.”

The late 2012 release of a Beebe biography, “Six Rings from Nowhere,” which still carries film and TV development potential, Beebe said, ensures the story isn’t fading away.

Some might respectfully suggest a footnote to the title, though.

Thanking Beebe again before dismissing students, principal Jill Maras reminded Beebe he didn’t come from nowhere, but from a tight-knit Kaneland community that won’t soon forget one thing.

Beebe always will be one of them.

Reading further into the obituaries

My secret passion is reading obituaries.

I look for people I have known. Don’t want to miss news of a passing that would not otherwise reach me. I take a look at style issues that might be useful as I contemplate that Last Column.

There are many choices, such as the religious phrase “gone to be with her savior” or speculating about the end of earthly life.

Some describe being “surrounded by loving family.” Statements about cause of death are usually fairly obscure, such as “long illness” or acutely specific as we read, once again, about cancer. It’s impossible not to imagine the pain and hardship.

There’s a recent obit in a Madison, Wisconsin, paper that caught my eye and opened the door for some real possibilities for me. It seems the memorial service was to be held at a local watering

The local area has just lost, in my mind, two fireworks-worthy folks. Bob Burger came out of the era gone by when we could walk down Main Street in St. Charles and find a place to shop, pay bills, have a quick coffee with friends and know personally each and every merchant.

We were typically west side shoppers, but one of the cross-over stops sometimes would be Burger Drugs (Our daughter’s softball uniform had a broad sponsorship label citing Burger Drugs.)

Like so many of those merchants, Bob gave back to his community in big ways,

Blackberry Township recently received a Grand Victoria Riverboat Fund check administered through Kane County.

“The money from the grant was used to pay for a boundary survey and field tile survey of the 62 acres that Blackberry Township received from the Forest Preserve District of Kane County as a result of an intergovernmental agreement,” a news release from Blackberry Township said. “The township signed a 20-year lease for the property, which will over time be developed in cooperation with local youth sport groups into sport fields.

Blackberry Township is working with four sport groups – soccer, football, baseball and softball, [and] lacrosse – to develop the land. Each sport group will be responsible for raising the money and development of their own designated spaces.”

Blackberry Township does not have a park and recreation program, so the intergovernmental agreement with the Forest Preserve District of Kane County and the collaborative efforts of the various sport groups was necessary to make the sport fields a reality,

the release said. Blackberry Township also received some revenue from the county, which is part of the land-cash agreement to develop projects, such as the sport complex, the release states.

“Blackberry Township is taking the lead on the project and has assumed some of the expense for developing a plan, but only with community support will the project become a reality,” the release said. “The township is seeking additional grant funds to pay for engineering costs for the internal roadway and parking areas. In the future, funds will be sought to do actual infrastructure work and to fund a source for electricity and water.”

The earliest the township will have access to the property is 2017. Because the project is going to be developed over time, the land will continue to be farmland in any area not being developed, the release states.

In addition to sport fields for several hundred youth, the long-term plans include walking and bike paths, as well as a play area. The future sport area is south of the former McNair baseball field on Bateman Road, states the release.

Did you ever find a stray animal or hope there was someone who cares enough to do something? Then you knew Ruth Church.

For several years, when people would call our house about an orphaned or injured animal, Mister Z would advise, “Call Ruth Church,” and give her memorized phone number.

Conversely, Ruth would call Phil to see if he had some help for her. I recall her mellow, down-to-business voice and her determined mission.

Fireworks, indeed, for Ruth on behalf of so many loved, rescued and adopted critters. We do so love our animals,

and when they are gone there is that particular hurt a family suffers. So sorry that Bella is gone, cousin Jim. Well, I have pretty much decided to brag a bit in my obituary so folks know I was here and tried to do my best.

Crossed over to that Great Camp Randall in the Sky where the Lord had the marching band ready. Celebration of life to be staged with music, loud music.

Doubt that a marching band would be available. Perhaps those jazz musicians at church (join them sometime at the second service at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church) could do a Dixieland beat? Yeah, and fireworks, too.

GENEVA – To celebrate the first anniversary of 25N Coworking in Geneva, the company hosted a party for members and guests Feb. 19.

Members said that the event, “Work Hard, Play Harder,” was an enjoyable way to look back on their first year of coworking close to home, states a news release. Many brought family members, some of whom had never seen the space.

“The 25N anniversary party was a very nice event,” Autumn Burns, operations manager for Black Spectacles, said in the release. “It gave me a chance to show my husband around ... and to meet a few people I have not had a chance to meet during the busy work week.”

The approximately 100 attendees enjoyed food and beverages from 25N’s “SideKick” partners: Early Light Café, FreshGround Roasting, Gia Mia Geneva, Old Towne Pub and Eatery, Penrose Brewing, Preservation Bread and Wine, and Stockholm’s.

Aging feet require special care Dear Dr. K: As I’ve entered my 60s, I’ve noticed my toenails are thicker and the skin on my feet is drier. Should I change my foot care routine?

Dear Reader: Just like the rest of your body, your feet change with age. By age 50, you may have lost almost half of the fatty padding on the soles of your feet. To compensate, you may want to add overthe-counter cushioning inserts to your shoes for additional padding.

As your feet age, it also may be time to consider different forms of exercise.

Swimming and bicycling, for example, put less pressure on the joints of the foot than jogging or tennis.

It’s also a good idea to stretch your feet and ankles regularly to help reduce the incidence of injury. I’ve put examples, descriptions and illustrations of some stretches and exercises on my website, www.askdoctork.com.

Toenail and foot skin health are important, too. Skin grows thinner and drier with age, and nails may become thicker or more brittle. If your nails are thick and yellow, it may indicate a health problem. To keep your feet healthy, exercise or massage them to increase circulation. Pay attention to nutrition, too.

Maintaining good overall health helps your feet stay healthy along with the rest of you.

Another good idea is to moisturize your feet regularly so you don’t develop cracks and fissures in the skin. Not only are openings in the skin painful, they also make you more susceptible to viruses and bacteria that enter through breaks in the skin and cause infection.

Pay special attention to the heels, as these can get very dry. However, do not

This area tends to be moist, and you may end up encouraging some type of fungal or bacterial growth.

As your nails become thicker with aging, they may be harder to cut. When I recommend treatments, they do not always involve pharmaceuticals. When a home remedy may work, I mention it as well. Here’s one that may help: Apply a bit of Vicks VapoRub ointment (normally used for easing chest congestion) to your thick nails, massaging it on gently. Wipe off any excess ointment before pulling on socks or going to bed. After a month or so of daily applications, you should find your toenails softer and easier to trim.

It’s not clear why this works, but one of the ingredients in Vicks VapoRub (probably the eucalyptus oil) apparently softens the nails.

The questions readers send in sometimes ask about diseases, particularly major afflictions such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. But there is one category of suffering readers ask about more than disease: decrepitude.

And lots of people have questions about their aching feet. I’m particularly sympathetic as I’m writing this column, as I’m suffering an attack of gout, and my right foot hurts.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 13, and I guess you could call me a tomboy because for several years I played sports with the boys. When I get to high school, I will participate in sports because I enjoy the athletic competition, and it provides an excellent exercise and fitness program.

My dad played high school football, so he understands my desire to play athletics, but my mom, who is not athletic, wants me to stop being a tomboy and start being more feminine. Do you see anything wrong with a girl being a tomboy? – Nameless, Boise, Idaho Nameless: Absolutely not. The

term “tomboy” is a relic of a bygone era, when a whole host of fun and healthy activities were not considered feminine. Rigid restrictions on what girls were allowed to do were an injustice to many young women of earlier generations who loved sports and would have excelled, but never had the chance.

Janet Hyde, of Bowling Green University, says a girl can be a tomboy and still be feminine. Research indicates many tomboys have strong leadership qualities and wind up making valuable contributions in many areas thought to be the province of men, such as scientific research and even space exploration. The individualism of tomboys can help young girls become self-assured, well-adjusted women, Dr. Hyde says.

You are feeling lost and uncomfortable in Santa Ana, so I think you should move back to Ohio, where I’m sure you have more friends and acquaintances.

These folks will give you encouragement and help you find a job and a place to stay.

Dr. Wallace: Why are you always telling teens not to smoke instead of directing your “Don’t smoke” campaign directly at adults? There are a lot more adults who smoke than teens. –

For another, I want them to grow into healthy adults. Most anti-smoking campaigns are directed at young people because it’s much easier to discourage someone from starting an addictive habit than it is to get an addict to give it up.

The Institute of Medicine reports more than 400,000 Americans die each year from diseases directly attributed to smoking, and 70 percent of addicted smokers started their nasty habit before they reached their 18th birthday. As many as 3,000 teenagers a day become regular smokers, according to the institute.

matters may not seem appropriate to you, that’s what some children in grammar school do. The problem, however, is a lot of misinformation can be transmitted among them. Be glad your daughter trusts you enough that she’s willing to tell you what is being said.

If this were my daughter and I had not yet had “the talk” with her, I would waste no time in initiating it. Her classmates might say some of the things they do for shock value and have no concept about the violence and physical and emotional damage a rapist can inflict.

Not only should you bring this to the attention of the parents of these classmates, also talk to the school principal. The best way to combat screwed-up thinking like this is through frank, open discussion and education.

Dear Abby: I have 18-year-old twin sons who are seniors in high school and more mature than most at their age. My husband and I raised them with responsibility and manners, and people comment on how well they behave.

My problem is neither one seems interested in socializing. They don’t date and never have friends over. They tell me people their age are “morons.”

The boys are very close. They still share a room, and want to attend college together and major in the same field. I’m worried they are too close and need to separate from each other and get out more. Should I be worried about this or wait and see what college brings them? –

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade, one heart (trick one), four diamonds and one club. He can get the extra winners from either black suit -- but on which should he play?

Let’s look at the first trick. East was playing third hand high, but didn’t beat dummy’s eight. Why not? Because he couldn’t. West has the heart ace-queen hovering over South’s king-jack. If East gets on lead, a heart return will kill the contract.

So, the spade finesse should not be taken. Instead, declarer should lead a low diamond to dummy’s nine and play a club to his 10 (allowing for East’s having the jack and king).

When the finesse wins, South returns to dummy with a diamond, takes a second club finesse, and here wins 11 tricks.
