Area urged to prepare for tornado season

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Although it might not feel like spring is near, warmer weather will be here soon enough.

As temperatures start to move higher, the chance for severe weather will increase.

As part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week, the Romeoville office of the National Weather Service will participate in a statewide tornado drill at 10 a.m. today.

This year’s theme is “Be a Force of Nature: Take the Next Step.”

“It is a great time for people to review their emergency plans for their home and work,” said Matt Friedlein, National Weather Service’s

acting warning coordination meteorologist for northern Illinois. “Prime time for severe weather is from April through mid-summer.”

The tornadoes that hit several communities in Illinois in November are a reminder of the devastation that tornadoes can cause.

Illinois ranks fifth in the

nation in tornado frequency per square mile.

“We experienced one of the biggest outbreaks we’ve seen in the state,” Friedlein said. “Tornadoes can happen anywhere, even in densely populated areas.”

Those caught outdoors during severe weather should run to the nearest

shelter, he said.

“Get as low as you can, get under something sturdy and cover your head,” Friedlein said. “The number one threat associated with tornadoes is debris in the air.”

Ghost hunters at O’Brien’s Pub Team seeking information about paranormal experiences

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Things that go bump in the night were on tap late Friday at O’Brien’s Pub and Grill in Batavia, as a team of ghost hunters converged on the iconic bar and eatery in search of the paranormal.

Casey O’Brien, who has owned the business for 10 years and the historic building at 12 N. River St. for eight, said stories about strange occurrences have been told for years.

“We’ve had employees and customers who have said they had paranormal experiences,” O’Brien said. “What I’ve seen is slips of paper and a beer glass pushed off a shelf with no wind or anything. I’ve felt moments of chill, where it all of a sudden got cold ... and a juke box that turns on and off by itself. This is the third time it’s been replaced.”

Perhaps the story with the biggest impact occurred three times to two different employees, and was told to him independently as each worked different shifts, O’Brien said.

“There’s a guy at the bar who is asked to leave because it’s past last call – and suddenly the guy disappears,” O’Brien said. “He is described to be like a fur trapper, with a fur hat and coat.”

When O’Brien recently reconnected with a childhood friend, Mark Schwabe of Genoa, via Facebook, he was intrigued by Schwabe’s ghost hunter hobby and shared the bar’s strange stories.

“We went to fourth grade together,” O’Brien said. “Ten days ago, I had not seem him in 45 years.”

O’Brien said Schwabe persuaded him to let his paranormal research team – Ghost Head Soup – into the bar. So by 9 p.m. Friday, O’Brien imposed an early last call, cleared out the customers and watched as Ghost Head Soup’s team set up the equipment.

Thompson explained they were using cameras with thermal imaging to record heat signatures, audio and video recorders with infrared capabilities, digital cameras – and Play-Doh – a low-tech way to situate cameras and keep them still.

“And we have a ghost box,” Thompson said. “A radio that’s been hacked up. An ...

... and we make some slight adjustments and it’s believed the spirits can talk through that. ... We’ll be asking questions ... and sometimes questions are answered through the ghost box.”

The equipment also captures electronic voice phenomena that the team listens to after the session is completed, using Dragon Voice Recognition software to be objective.

“If the program hears the same thing we’re hearing, chances are it’s happening,” Hawrylenko said. “No other hunt teams do that – at least not the ones I’ve seen – be-

cause they want to interpret what they’re hearing. The computer doesn’t know it’s on a ghost hunt.”

Schwabe said the team discovered how to capture voices in real time.

“A lot of recordings could not be understood until we reversed them,” Schwabe said.

“We record in reverse, and it comes out.”

Hawrylenko credited Thompson with figuring that out.

“Dean captured an [electronic voice phenomena] he could not understand,” Hawrylenko said. “He altered it in any way he could – changing

pitch, raise the volume. ...

And when he played it backwards, it said something. It said, ‘Reckless spiritualists are funny.’ ” Hawrylenko said when electronic voice phenomena are recorded on paranormal TV shows, they are usually simple words.

“We got words that were complex, multisyllables and the word ‘spiritualists’ [is] not a brand-new word. Not a word a lot of people use nowadays. They say ‘ghost hunter,’ that sort of thing,” Hawrylenko said. “The ghost that Dean was probably chasing that day in the house was about 100 years old, so it probably hearkened back to the first age of spiritualism, when word spiritualist was common.”

Another reverse electronic voice phenomena caught by Schmuldt was of a little girl at another location.

“So we realized that some specimens of EVP come backwards,” Hawrylenko said.

“Why? We don’t know. We’re talking about the other side of the mirror.”

Schwabe said the team stayed at O’Brien’s until 3:30 a.m. Saturday and will take the rest of the week to review their tapes.

“We had responses on the equipment when we were doing the questioning – lights would start blinking,” Schwabe said. “We will try to sync up our audio and see if we caught anything. We won’t know what it is until we review it.”

Albright costumer does ‘whatever needs to be done’

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Albright Theatre Company costumer Beth Oberle wanted to make sure actor Alexander Seymour’s suit fit correctly.

“Your pants are the right length, so now I’m happy,” Oberle said to Seymour, as he was getting ready to step onto the stage during a recent rehearsal for Albright’s production of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”

Oberle is in charge of costume design for the production. But she does a little bit of everything.

“It’s community theater.

Everybody does whatever needs to be done,” Oberle said.

While backstage, Oberle worked to pull the curlers out of actress Maureen Morley’s hair.

“I think more, smaller curlers definitely helped,” she told Morley. “I just sprayed it, so we’ll let it dry.”

“It was an opportunity to be somebody other than who I was,” Oberle said. “I loved it. I was always kind of an outgoing kid.”

She has been involved with The Albright Theatre since 2009 in different capacities, including as an actress and co-director. She said she “didn’t audition for this

show, but it was a show that I wanted to be a part of, without having to memorize 95 pages of dialogue.”

In the time she has been with The Albright Theatre,

she said she thankfully never has seen a wardrobe malfunction.

“That’s why you go to readthroughs, to make sure there are no wardrobe malfunctions,” Oberle said. “I’ve come to a couple of dress rehearsals for ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ to make sure everything is working.”

Oberle said she feels a sense of satisfaction when the costumes or accessories she chooses help the production.

She said “sometimes it is that final little piece that brings the character together.”

And she said she is a big supporter of community theater and the good it does.

“I think it brings people together,” Oberle said. “It extends your community.”

Before the curtain rose Friday for “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” there was plenty of work being done backstage. That included Oberle searching for vintage clothing for the play, which is set in the 1960s.

She scoured local Goodwill stores to find what was needed for the production, including sweaters and tops for the actresses.

“We are blessed in this area to have very good Goodwill stores,” Oberle said.

rural Michigan. As a youth, one of his hobbies was as a recognized member of the debate team. He graduated from high school in June 1944. Keith joined the Army just one day after graduation and went on to proudly serve his country in the 306 Regiment as part of the 77th Division.

In April of 1945, Keith was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroic actions during battle on Okinawa. Honorably discharged in 1945, Keith went on to attend, and subsequently graduate, Albion College with additional education at Tufts Business College. He studied history, law and international diplomacy. Keith retired in 1998 after a successful career in business that included partial ownership and management of Alwyn Downs Golf Club in Marshall, Mich.

Keith was a member of various organizations, including the Moose Lodge in Marshall, Mich., a board member with Friends of The Orchestra in Battle Creek, Mich., and an active member in the VFW in South Haven, Mich.

Keith loved to travel with his wife Dolores, including excursions to Egypt, Africa, Spain and throughout Europe. He enjoyed all things sports, including golf, as well as being an avid Michigan Wolverines and Detroit Lions fan. As a voracious reader, Keith was rarely seen without a book (particularly history) in addition to a plethora of newspapers. He enjoyed dining out, collecting wine and spending time with family and friends while enjoying the splendor of Lake Michigan sunrises and sunsets.

8OBITUARIES RONALD H. CANADAY Born: Feb. 27, 1933 Died: Feb. 26, 2014 GENEVA – Ronald H. Canaday, 80, a resident of St. Charles since 1992, died of natural causes Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

He was born on Feb, 27, 1933, in Champaign, Ill. He was preceded in death by his mother, Madge; father, Howard; and his brother, Bob, sister-in-law, Thelma, and their three children.

He was the beloved husband of Janet Phillips, whom he married Jan. 20, 1952, and loving father of Howard Kevin, who preceded him in death. He was uncle to several nieces and nephews.

Ron was drafted into the Army in 1953 and served in Korea until 1955. He attended the University of Illinois from 1955 to 1959 with a degree in accounting. He had a career with Guide Lamp, division of General Motors from 1959 to 1967, then accepted a controller position with Miles Laboratory in Elkhart, Ind., finishing with a 20year career with Molex as CFO. Afterward, he served as director and chairman of the board of Harris Bank, Naperville, while also serving on local organizations: family services, Little Friends, YMCA, 100 Club and a director on the Board of McKey Door Manufacturing Aurora. He retired from all the above when he experienced health issues in 2002.

He was an avid sports fan, loving soccer, golf, football, hockey, basketball, racing, to name a few; in addition, Helmut was a volunteer soccer coach and a referee for Tri-City Soccer. Owner wants to enlarge, upgrade kitchen

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen on Monday approved giving Aliano’s Ristorante a $25,000 tax increment financing grant and a $75,000 low-interest loan so Aliano’s can reconfigure its kitchen and expand its business.

Aliano’s opened in December 2011 at 90 N. Island Ave. in downtown Batavia.

Tax increment financing is a tool that allows municipalities to earmark property tax revenues from increases in assessed values within a designated TIF district.

Mario Aliano, owner of Aliano’s Ristorante, wants to enlarge the restaurant’s kitchen area and make up-

grades to kitchen equipment.

In addition, he proposes to open Aliano’s Express, a carryout, delivery and catering business at 70 N. Island Ave., immediately south of his existing restaurant. Aliano’s Express plans to offer more than 30 entrees.

“I want to do a large amount of catering and delivery,” Aliano previously told aldermen.

The project is expected to cost $208,000, which includes about $108,250 for the expansion and $99,750 to purchase equipment and for other expenses.

The low-interest loan would be for five years at an interest rate of 2.75 percent.

In a related project, building owner Alex Group will re-

place an existing, undersized and faulty grease trap with a new 55-gallon, code-compliant trap.

In a memo to aldermen, Batavia economic development consultant Chris Aiston said the existing grease trap cannot adequately handle grease refuse from existing kitchen operations, and that grease sometimes enters the city’s sanitary sewer system.

The Alex Group also will install a kitchen floor drain system as the kitchen currently is without floor drains.

The Alex Group plans to apply for a downtown matching grant between $10,000 and $20,000 to help pay for the project, Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath said.

Business partners Christopher Muscia of Lake Villa and Phil Richardson of Chicago said they are in talks to purchase the Thirsty Fox Pub, 104 E. Main St., from owners Samantha and Edward Stone.

The men plan to turn the pub into a restaurant and possibly use the word “saloon”

somewhere in its new name.

Muscia said the restaurant will have a sports atmosphere and a pit BBQ menu. He expects to have food purchases account for half of the restaurant’s total sales, with liquor sales making up the other half.

“I want to make sure it’s a place where I’ll bring my kids,” Muscia said on Monday after leaving the St. Charles Government Operations Committee’s regular meeting.

Muscia was on hand during the committee’s meeting as it voted 8-2 to recommend the proposed business receive a Class B liquor license. Ward 4 aldermen Jim Martin and Jo Krieger continued their longstanding practice of voting no on liquor license requests.

Muscia will be an operating partner of the business and will have local managers on-site. The business will continue to operate as the Thirsty Fox for about six more weeks, then briefly close before it reopens under a new name by end of April, Musica said.

Arts, crafts on display at St. Charles show Festival took place at DuPage Expo Center

Danielson owns Classy Cane Covers, which was one of the exhibitors at Sunday’s Festival of Arts and Crafts at the DuPage Expo Center in St. Charles.

“It lifts people’s spirits,” Danielson said. “It’s like an accessory.”

The idea for Classy Cane Covers was born after Danielson’s mother, Mary Augelli, wanted to dress up her cane for an upcoming family wedding.

So she sewed the extra material from her sequin blouse onto her cane.

“She wanted it to match her outfit and dress it up for the occasion,” Danielson said.

Danielson and Augelli own Classy Cane Covers, which is in its second year of business.

The cane covers are handsewn by the two of them. Information is available at Classy Cane Covers’ website, www. classycanecovers.com.

Hampshire resident Sue Camodeca was tempting shoppers with her toffee, caramel corn and other sweets that she makes as part of her Sweets by Sue business.

“I’ve always baked,” Camodeca said. “I did cake decorating when I was a teenager.”

Caramel corn and toffee are her specialties. Her caramel corn is distinct because it is made with corn puffs so there are no kernels, she said.

“It’s gluten-free,” Camodeca said.

Glen Ellyn resident Tom Liebing’s booth also caught people’s eyes and ears. His company, Custom Tank Drum, makes drums out of recycled propane tanks.

“I sell them to professional jazz players,” he said. “It has a sound like a round xylophone.”

The drums also are used in music therapy, Liebing said.

Lauzen said he supports Donahue’s efforts to turn up the heat on Waste Management, but the board chairman stopped short of saying the county would take legal action to force the company to live up to its agreement.

“We’re not there yet,” Lauzen said. “We’re trying to work as responsible partners with them. I think Mike is turning up the temperature a bit. Again, I support him.”

Lauzen echoed Donahue’s frustration in terms of negotiating with Waste Management.

“We have these meetings where we think we make progress – and then nothing happens,” Lauzen said.

“Sometimes they point to a lawyer, and we square away the lawyers, then it’s back to the same place.”

GENEVA – Kane County board member Mike Donahue, R-St. Charles, called out Waste Management in a letter Monday, accusing the waste-hauling giant of refusing to negotiate the closure and recreational end-use of Settlers Hill Landfill in Geneva.

The landfill has been closed for eight years, and post-closure talks have been going on for two years, Donahue said.

“Now we are to the point of implementing things and getting public access in there, and they just don’t seem to share the vision,” Donahue said. “They seem to be unwilling to go to the actual step of opening [the] facility up to public access.”

Donahue’s letter details his frustration: “I find their apparent unwillingness to fulfill this promise now to be a monumental breach of the public trust. Our efforts to implement recreational end uses at Settler’s Hill have stalled because Waste Management has chosen to hold these efforts hostage while it attempts to exact amendments to the landfill operating agreement that are favorable to them but puts the taxpayers of Kane County at risk.”

In short, Donahue said, Waste Management does not want to uphold the promises it made more than 30 years ago, when it offered a “grand vision” to create a public recreation area on the finished landfill in exchange for the county’s consent to be host to a regional solid waste disposal facility.

“It’s gotten to the point where you can only talk so long,” Donahue said. “The people we are dealing with just don’t get it. It’s time to move it to a different level.

I’ve only got so much time left on the board, I think the public needs to start to weigh in on this.”

In a statement, Waste Management officials did not respond to Donahue’s specific charges: “We are committed to working with Kane County to resolve the outstanding issues associated with the revised agreement and working with the county regarding their end use plan. We value our relationship with Kane County

Hacking at free press?

THE WASHINGTON POST It was mid-morning Wednesday when Kevin Lau Chun-to stepped out of his car near a Hong Kong restaurant he frequents for breakfast. Lau, the well-known former chief editor of the Chinese-language daily Ming Pao, was savagely attacked by a man wielding a meat cleaver that sliced through his back and legs.

Thankfully, Lau was rushed to a hospital and survived surgery. No one has been arrested, but the circumstances suggest something sinister. This may have not been just a brutal attack on a single person but rather an assault on the free press in Hong Kong, a chilling message for all who care about democracy.

Lau was dismissed in January from his post at Ming Pao, prompting street demonstrations by those – including his colleagues – who expressed the fear that he was removed in another quiet but notable effort by authorities in Beijing to dampen Hong Kong’s spirit of freedom and to quash independent reporting about them anywhere in the world.

The newspaper had carried out several groundbreaking investigations under Lau’s leadership. It participated in a probe by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists that cast light on how the world’s super-rich, including thousands of Chinese, have embraced the use of global tax havens. That was one of several recent penetrating articles by journalists, including those at Bloomberg and The New York Times, to probe the connections of wealth and power in China.

Under Chinese pressure, Bloomberg appears to have

backed down from such reporting, and China has withheld visas from some New York Times reporters. The material the ICIJ published in January showed that relatives of several senior Chinese leaders, including President Xi Jinping and former Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, owned stakes in companies registered in offshore tax havens.

It is no small feat for Western journalists, working inside a partially closed society like China, to expose such murky dealings. It is even more difficult for a newspaper such as Ming Pao. Although Hong Kong is regarded as one of the most transparent and open economic zones in the world, politically it remains in a grey zone. The former British colony was turned over to China in 1997; today it is a semiautonomous Chinese territory. The promise made

by China’s rulers at the time was “one country, two systems” – they would allow Hong Kong’s freedom to flourish. Hong Kong’s democracy advocates work hard to safeguard that independence, but it is continually under pressure from Beijing.

Even though there is no evidence yet of who carried out the attack, the meat cleaver put between Lau’s shoulder blades will send chills through all who care about Hong Kong’s future.

It will spread fear and deter journalists from spending time and effort to investigate officials in Beijing. The news accounts of the assault on Lau suggest it was intended to maim but not kill. It mustn’t be allowed to maim or kill the spirit of Hong Kong or the efforts, around the world, to report truthfully on the world’s most populous country.

The Class 4A Judson Supersectional plaque survived the rush and the roar Monday night after Geneva beat Rockford Boylan, 60-41. Most importantly, so did the Vikings.

“I was a little nervous I was going to get trampled,” freshman center Grace Loberg said, “but this makes it 10 times better.”

“This” meant the euphoria swirling around a team that has won 14 straight games, a team that defeated an opponent from Rockford that entered with 23 consecutive victories.

Geneva (26-5) advanced to face Rolling Meadows in a state semifinal at Illinois State’s Redbird Arena at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The Vikings don’t figure to fret upon their arrival.

“We never had doubts. We knew we could do it. It was just whether or not we wanted to,” junior forward Abby Novak said. “Whether or not we could push to do it. We knew we were capable of doing it. We had the talent and the effort that we needed to win, and we did.”

Boylan (27-6) challenged Geneva in the first half after a sluggish start, but its ever-changing zone and man defensive looks eventually gave way to frustration.

The Vikings opened the third quarter on a 8-0 run in 2:15, then settled in. The Titans’ Jensen Blassage led all scorers with 19 points, but Geneva usually had the answer at the other end.

“They would switch a lot and we had to be aware of everything, but we obviously did well adjusting to that,” Novak said.

On Monday “WARM UP THE BUS!” referred not only to the shuttles taking fans to their cars at various points on campus, but the likely fan transportation headed downstate.

“I don’t think these kids care who they play. I really think that they believe they can play with anybody on the court,” Vikings coach Sarah Meadows said. “And we’ve got to continue to drill that and drill that. If you’re going to go [downstate], you might as well win a game, you know. I mean, let’s go. Let’s win two.”

Geneva entered the state

tournament 32-0 on its most recent appearance in the 2008-09 season, but lost both games and finished fourth.

Meadows was an assistant to Gina Nolan then.

Nolan since has stepped down from her position to battle breast cancer and fight it into remission. As usual, she was in attendance Monday.

Geneva’s senior class has shown plenty of resolve.

Guard/forward Sidney Santos missed two seasons with knee injuries, while Loebel nearly did the same. Classmate Morgan Seberger has remained a constant in the Vikings postseason success and added 11 points Monday.

As fans watched the Vikings climb one more ladder to cut down another net, Santos reflected on the journey so far.

“I think the biggest thing about this year is the fact that our team can hold it together to clear each other’s head,” she said. “If someone starts getting worked up, we have each other to bring each other back down. It’s truly a team win, team atmosphere.

The Burlington Central sophomore gave a head fake, as though she were trying to physically shake the defender off of her.

Then, using the tiny amount of additional space that move gave her, she calmly drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give the Rockets a 17-16 halftime lead in a Class 3A supersectional at Hoffman Estates Monday night.

It was one of three shots Pryor hit from behind the arc in the second and third quarters, which helped turn the tide of the game.

Schoessling, Bulldogs rise up in regional opener

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – As has been the case for many of his teammates, it’s been a trying basketball season for Batavia senior guard Jeremy Schoessling.

Schoessling started early in the year, then lost his starting role and experienced periods of rocky play as the Bulldogs stumbled through a difficult season.

But the old saying that the postseason presents a fresh start rang true for Schoessling and the Bulldogs on Monday, as 19th-seeded Batavia upset No. 14 seed Downers Grove South, 59-52, in an IHSA Class 4A Plainfield East Regional first-round game.

Schoessling entered play Monday averaging less than four points a game but his 12 second-half points against the Mustangs played a central role in the Bulldogs’ victory,

which advances Batavia to tonight’s regional semifinal against Bolingbrook, the No. 3 seed in the 23-team East Aurora Sectional.

“Yeah, it was difficult, but you’ve got to keep grinding through it,” Schoessling said of his season. “I’ve loved basketball my whole Jeremy life. I also play Schoessling baseball and I’m going to go to college to play baseball, so just knowing this is the last time I’m ever going to play basketball again, I just wanted to give it my all.”

Batavia (8-17) trailed by one at halftime and after the third quarter. Schoessling scored the Bulldogs’ final seven points of the third quarter, including a three-point play that brought the Bulldogs within 35-32 and a steal and score to trim the Mustangs’

Schoessling said coach Jim Nazos trusting him to guard Mustangs standout Danny Spinuzza provided a mental lift during the game.

“Coach Naz said to pressure him, don’t let him get the ball easy,” Schoessling said.

“We wanted to not let him get the ball in his hands [at the end of the quarter], and the

ball ended up in my hands.”

Nazos was delighted to see Schoessling play such a crucial role in a postseason victory.

“He’s gone through some tough times of the year, where he was unsure of every, single pass he was going to make,” Nazos said. “He was unsure on his shot, and he just kind of stuck with it and worked his way out of it. It’s 100 percent on him, sticking with it and doing the right thing.”

Downers Grove South was fueled by its 3-point shooting this season but the Mustangs were only 6 of 22 from beyond the arc Monday.

“I think it was their defense,” Mustangs coach Kris Olson said. “I thought they did a great job of always having a hand in our face but making us have to work hard at coming off screens, too. And when we did have a good look, we were so rushed because we didn’t have many good looks

from the perimeter that our timing was off.”

Batavia also did a solid job tracking long rebounds and outmuscling the Mustangs for position when need be. Junior forward Danny Pieczynski helped Batavia win the boards battle with 11 rebounds.

“We just were really being aggressive on the boards because they were smaller than us and we realized that, so we just used that to our advantage,” Pieczynski said.

Brothers Micah Coffey (15 points) and Canaan Coffey (11) joined Schoessling in double figures for the Bulldogs.

Pieczynski scored seven of his eight points in the fourth, making 5-of-6 free throws in the final 1:17 to help preserve the Bulldogs’ lead.

Batavia limped through a 2-10 Upstate Eight Conference River season – beating last-place Streamwood twice – but Nazos said morale has remained steadfast.

Geneva football recruits learn Cardinal rule about rivalries Geneva seniors Billy Douds and T.J. Miller recently committed to continue their football careers at North Central College, an NCAA Division III program in Naperville that has seen its share of Batavia alumni through the years.

The connection hardly troubles either Viking, who will join Batavia lineman Ryan Minniti as Cardinals defensive recruits in the fall.

“Once you get to college, you kind of all get along,” Douds said. “You don’t forget it, but you kind of coincide with each other on it.”

Talk about perspective.

Wasn’t it just five days ago that the schools’ girls basketball teams vied for the 4A Addison Trail Sectional title?

Douds and Miller, former basketball players themselves, have forged their own paths to college football.

Miller, a linebacker/ safety, followed the more traditional route, progressing after starting with the Tri-Cities Chargers youth program as a child. An all-Up-

state Eight Conference River Division selection as a running back last season – Douds and Minniti earned nods as defensive linemen – Miller will be just a one-platoon player in college.

He played both outside linebacker and safety for the Vikings at various points and projects to take a similar role at North Central.

“It’s basically the same,” Miller said. “For the type of safety, I’ll play down more on the run. I still have to work on pass coverage, but I know I’ll be comfortable doing things in the box at the start.”

Football lexicon once eluded Douds, even though his family is deeply-rooted in the sport. His great-grandfather, Forrest, was the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first coach in 1933, and his father and grandfather both played collegiately.

Douds spent his own time in the trenches growing up, albeit as an aspiring motocross driver. He had never played team sports until giving up motocross late in middle school. Regular commutes

“I was really into that and it just got too expensive and a little dangerous with my parents and everything,” Douds said.

Douds soon got up to speed on the gridiron, where he used a built-in size advantage. A first-time wrestler in the fall, he has grown to 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds.

North Central finished 13-1 in 2013 and advanced to the Division III semifinals for the first time. The Cardinals have won seven straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin titles.

“I like how close it is. I like the location. It’s right in downtown Naperville,” Miller said. “They’ve got good academics, the football

team is one of the top D-III programs, so all that together stuck out.”

So what if he’ll be wearing red, a mainstay of Batavia?

Miller is playing college football, and that’s all that matters.

North swimmers stay optimistic: St. Charles North boys swimmers tossed their figurative caps into the IHSA state meet team race after finishing 10th in the program’s lone final Saturday.

The 200-yard freestyle relay of sophomores Joe Myrhe and Stephan Hutchinson and seniors Ross Davis and Collin Bawolek earned the North Stars six team points. The contribution proved especially meaningful for Davis and Bawolek, who both made their state debuts at Evanston.

“I’m a senior this year and I started out in Lane 8, which is, like, the slow lane,” Davis said. “So to move every year, it’s really exciting to be able to come to state.”

Davis plans to study at Alabama and said Bawolek is

bound for Minnesota. Apart from the occasional rec center swim, however, regular pool hours are not in either athlete’s forecast.

Myhre, also in his first IHSA postseason after moving from Indiana, figures to form a solid core with Hutchinson in the nearterm. North Stars coach Rob Rooney has stressed that the process to add to that number begins with the club season.

“We can definitely build off this year. A lot,” Rooney said. “What I want to see is, obviously, a little more commitment. ... I look at what Naperville Central’s done. They went from scoring no points a year ago, I believe, to being in the fight for a trophy [finishing fourth this weekend].

That’s pretty impressive.

Edging perennial contenders Hinsdale Central and New Trier in the day’s final event – team state champion Normal University won the race – proved especially satisfying for the Cadets, who progressed throughout a season that featured humble beginnings. Marmion finished 11th as a team.

“We put in the effort, we put in the yards during practice,” said Burke, a Wayne resident.

“We definitely stepped up at the end of the meet, and we really come through.”

St. Charles North’s 200 freestyle relay of sophomores Joe Myhre and Stephan Hutchinson and seniors Ross Davis and Collin Bawolek also played the waiting game, as theirs was the ninth of 12 events.

Considering Hutchinson was the only relay member boasting state experience, that might have made for even more frantic thumb-twiddling before Norths placed 10th in 1:27.01.

Not so much, thanks to ample mid-meet sustenance – usually bananas and grapes – and the tutelage of the maturing Hutchinson.

“Last year we had the senior studs and everything like that. They’d been going to state

since their freshman year,” Davis said. “So it’s weird, because all season, the seniors were the leaders and all of a sudden, the role was changed and Stephan became the leader. But he did a good job. He knew what it was like, so he explained it to all of us.”

Shanel required no such crash course as he looked to build on last season’s effort, which included an eighth-place swim in the 200 IM and a leg with the 11th-place 200 free relay.

Shanel qualified for the 500 freestyle when the state meet was last held at Evanston, in 2012. While he missed the finals, he still derived a watershed moment as a spectator, beaming as most did after the duel between Hinsdale Central’s Danny Thomson and Reed Malone of New Trier.

Thomson (Stanford) and Malone (USC) since have relocated to southern California, but when Thomson edged Malone with a state-record swim of 4:18.86 on a Saturday afternoon two years ago, Shanel recalls pondering how all that attention might one day rest on him.

Thomson’s standard was nowhere near Shanel’s radar, but he was hoping to eclipse his dad’s top 500 time of 4:31.13 for then-St. Charles High School.

IHSA Class 3A Kaneland Regional: Marmion advanced out of the regional opener, thrashing Illinois Math and Science Academy, 85-51. The Cadets move on to Wednesday’s regional semifinal against St. Francis.

In the first game Monday, Aurora Central Catholic dropped a regional opener against Glenbard South, 8857. Brett Czerak scored 13 points for ACC. Glenbard South advances to tonight’s regional semifinal against top-seeded Kaneland.

EVANSTON – St. Charles East senior boys swimmer Will Shanel posed with the second of his two state medals before smiling again and exhaling.

He hadn’t begun to ponder his Saints legacy as Saturday’s IHSA swimming and diving state finals wound down, but at this point, just taking a moment to breathe sufficed.

“I came in with the mentality of, ‘Last race, got to make a move and throw everything I’ve got left into it,’ ” Shanel said. “And I can’t say that I could have gotten out any more tired. I’m really exhausted.”

Shanel sported the fruits of his labor around his neck after finishing sixth in the 200-yard individual medley (1:53.08) and fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:36.66) at Evanston.

For someone who lately has taken to calling himself the “caboose” of a decorated swimming family, here were a couple more souvenirs to take back to the station – or at least the Shanel home.

Shanel’s parents were collegians at Indiana, and he has had two older sisters in the Saints program. One of them, Ashley, competes at NCAA Division II Truman State (Mo.), his destination come the fall.

“Right now, it’s like, ‘OK.’ Mentally, I know that it’s over and this is the last race of high school right there,” Shanel said. “But at the same time it’s starting to set in a little bit to the point where I’ve done what I can with the younger guys and kind of said, ‘Hey, this is what to look for.’ ” Marmion earned a fourthplace finish in the Chronicle area’s only other championship final, finishing the 400 freestyle relay in 3:07.79, nearly one second faster than its preliminary time.

The Cadets quartet of seniors Mike Burke, Jack Fergus and Dan Creighton and junior Andrew Kasper endured a lengthy but prosperous wait.

Of East’s 29 baskets, 16 came from 3-point range, and six of those were by Jake Clodi (18 points). AJ Washington, the only Saints starter who did not make a 3-pointer, had 12 points. East senior Dom Adduci, coming off an ankle sprain, came off the bench for East, scoring eight points.

Third-seeded East, which led 39-17 at halftime, advances to Wednesday’s regional semifinal against the host and

second-seeded North Stars.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Energy use and cost are big problems today, but our ancestors found some simple solutions. Conestoga Auction Co. in Pennsylvania sold a goat cart in 2013 for $236. Was it a toy? A farm tool? Animal power was important in past years.

Of course, there were horse-drawn plows and wagons. But there were also dogand sheep-powered treadmills used to help churn butter. Donkeys, mules - and, in other countries, elephants and camels - furnished power for farm work and transportation. But goat carts have been popular not only for pulling wagons of farm products, but also as entertainment for children. From the late 19th century into the 1930s, traveling photographers took goat cart pictures. A child sat in the cart and the photographer took the cute picture and printed a photograph or a postcard. Dozens of these vintage goat cart pictures, most from Midwestern towns, can be found on the Internet. Iron and tin toys made from about 1890 to 1940 are replicas of children or men in goat carts. This old idea may be coming back. There is now a dogpowered wheelchair for injured veterans. *** Q: My dresser belonged to my mother. She gave it to me many years ago.

One drawer is marked “Kroehler, world’s largest furniture manufacturer, Permanized furniture.” I would like to sell it, but I don’t know how to go about it and how much to ask for it.

A: Peter E. Kroehler started out as a clerk at the Naperville Lounge Co. in 1893 and bought the company in 1903.

He founded P.E. Kroehler Manufacturing Co. in Kankakee, Ill., in 1911. He merged the two companies with two other furniture manufacturers in 1915 to form Kroehler Manufacturing Co. The “Permanized” finish was advertised as moisture-proof. The company was sold in 1981. A new Kroehler double dresser and mirror sold for about $175 in 1957.

Value today, if it’s in great condition, is about $200. *** Q: I have a vase that my mother owned for many years. The top edge is gilt and scalloped and the vase has two handles. The mark on the bottom is “Usona” over a standing dragon with “Goodwin” underneath it. Unfortunately, one of the handles broke off so I’m sure it isn’t worth much, but I’d like to know who made it and how old it is.

A: The dragon mark was used from

about 1906 to 1913 by Goodwin Pottery Co. of East Liverpool, Ohio. The company was in business from 1893 to 1913. You are right - the missing handle destroys the value.

*** Tip: To clean an old teddy bear, cover it with cheesecloth and vacuum it on the low setting. Use a small amount of foam carpet cleaner or foam from Woolite and water. Rinse. Let it dry out of sunlight.

Vacuum again. Do not soak the bear in water. The stuffing will be ruined.

** * Q: I have a battery-operated rollerskating monkey called Clancy that was one of my favorite childhood toys. It’s hard plastic and is about 22 inches tall.

Batteries fit into one of his shoes. His head moves from side to side and he moves forward when you put a coin in his hand or into his hat, which can be attached to his hand. What is Clancy worth today?

A: Clancy the Great, a roller-skating monkey, was made by Ideal Toy Co. in 1963. It was designed by Marvin Glass & Associates, a toy design company in Chicago. The toy came with two metal “coins.” If it’s in good working condition and you have the original box, the toy sells for about $100 today. *** Q: My mother bought me an Elvis Presley overnight case in 1956. The copyright date of 1956 is on the bottom.

The case has pictures of Elvis and his autograph on the cover and sides, blue trim and a blue handle. She paid $7 for it at W.E. Walker 5 & 10 cent store, where she worked. Can you tell me the value of it now?

A: Elvis Presley’s first records were produced by Sun Studio in Memphis, Tenn., in 1954. His rock-and-roll style and suggestive moves made him a popular but controversial figure back then. In 1956 he began recording for RCA and appeared in his first movie. Although he died in 1977, he remains one of the most popular recording stars of all time, with more than a billion records sold. The overnight case was made with blue or brown trim and handles. They have sold at auction for $200 to more than $400. ***

*** In the 19th century, this green wooden cart was used on a farm. The goat wagon has ironbanded wooden wheels. It is 21 inches wide and 40 inches long. The cart sold for $236 at Conestoga Auction Co. in Manheim, Pa.

Q: I have an 11-inch frosted glass wine bottle with a music box built into the bottle’s recessed bottom. The bottle is marked “Bols” around the bottom, but the wooden bottom of the music box is marked “Bottle made in France, Musical unit made in Switzerland.” When the bottle is picked up, the music box plays.

There’s a little pin on the bottom that winds the music box and stops the music when the bottle is set down. What is the history and value of this bottle?

A: The Lucas Bols company, based in Amsterdam, is the oldest distillery in the world. It traces its history back to 1575.

But its glass music-box bottles, including examples with a dancing ballerina inside, date from the middle of the 20th century.

They usually sell for $20 to $50. ** * Q: I inherited my grandmother’s set of china. The dishes are decorated with red and yellow roses. Each one has an octagonal mark with “Semi W.M. Co. Porcelain” inside it. Can you tell me who made this china and how old it is?

A: Willets Manufacturing Co. of Trenton, N.J., made your dishes. The pottery was in business from 1879 to about 1912. It used the octagonal mark on semi-porcelain made between 1879 and 1909.

A: I started baking wit with my mom when I was about 3 or 4 I baked things like li cupcakes and cookies with her.

As I got older, around the age of 10, I started watching my dad cook savory food. I wanted to try things and get in the kitchen with him.

Q: How did youu prepare for the show?

A: Before I even got the news that I was going on the show, I acted like I was already selected. I started practicing super technical things like searing tuna, making profiteroles and éclairs.

Q: How did you get on the show?

A: My school sent an email saying anyone with a real passion for cooking could go and audition in New York City for the MasterChef Junior show. First, I had a phone interview, and then a 30 minute on-camera cooking demo. Last, there was an interview/audition. They asked me to cook an egg, cut a vegetable, and measure some water, so that was really simple.

Q: What was the time frame from the start of the show until they announced the winner?

A: It all took less than a month.

Q: Did you stay in a hotel while taping the show?

A: Only one of my parents could come out to Los Angeles with me, so my mom came out with me for the beginning of the show.

Since I stayed in the competition for a long time, my dad came out later.

We were not allowed to leave the hotel until one of the show’s crew members came to get us. It was fun, a bit claustrophobic at times, having to stay in a hotel room for so long.

‘300: Rise of an Empire’ is as fun as the original

By ED SYMKUS The Washington Post Naysayers always ask the same question: Why would they make a sequel to something like “300?” The answer is always the same: Because “300” took in a cache of cash – something like half a billion dollars worldwide. It’s even, according to the folks at IMAX, the film that turned a certain corner for that company, that brought fanboys aboard as IMAX viewers. Sure, it was in many respects a video game version of a big-screen movie, with violence and accompanying blood galore. But it was also very stylized, was endlessly fascinating to watch, and it featured contemporary themes of diplomacy versus war.

So here we are, just about seven years to the day, since the release of “300,” with, nope, not a sequel, but another side of the same story, one that unfolds in a parallel manner. “300” told of 300 members of the Greek Spartan army, under the command of King Leonidas (Gerard Butler), going up against the seemingly insurmountable hordes of the Persian army in the land-based Battle of Thermopylae. Although “300: Rise of an Empire” opens with the results of that glorious fight, it eventually turns

into a chronicle of the Greek Athenian army, under the command of General Themistocles (Australian actor Sullivan Stapleton), also going up against the Persians, but doing so out on the ocean, at the same time.

The film offers up brief introductions of the main players at the beginning, including Leonidas’ grieving but incredibly tough widow Queen Gorgo (“Games of Thrones’ ” Lena Headey), Persian leader-turned-golden god Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and native Greek-turned-angry, vengeful Persian Artemisia (former Bond girl Eva Green).

There are all kinds of political and good-versus-evil machinations set in place, and then that stylized bloodbath begins. The film’s main palette consists of sepia and gray, but there hasn’t been this much burgundy-colored blood splattering across the screen (and sometimes onto camera lenses) since, well, since “300.”

There’s also the emotional, rather than physical, black and white to deal with. It’s very easy to figure out who’s good and who’s bad. Broadly speaking, the Greeks are good, and the Persians are bad. Getting down to specifics, General Themistocles is the hero, and the Gothlike Artemisia is the villain. You don’t have to think twice about her: Early

on she decapitates one of her foes, then grabs his head and kisses it. No doubt, she’s the bad gal!

We eventually get her back story, telling us why and how she became what she is, and that story makes plenty of sense. But it’s more fun to watch her parade around in cool outfits that are complemented by an ever-present scowl, just waiting for her to make another panther-like move.

Of course, that’s mostly for the guys in the audience. But the women watching will be treated to lots of beefy guys walking around shirtless, wearing little leather skirts. There’s also a treat for men AND women to enjoy: a cartoonishly furious sex scene, accompanied by pounding percussion on the soundtrack, in which the two athletic participants are making more noise than all of those drums.

For the fanboys among us, there are spectacular visual effects, especially out at sea, where spears are flying, ships are ramming and waves are roiling. The film’s makers have gone out of their way to get across points about both the glory and the futility of war. But they go about it by making sure they’ve put together the most violent movie of the year so far.

Oddly, it’s also a whole lot of fun.

People prone to addiction may be wired differently Dear Doctor K: Is it true that some people are more vulnerable to addiction than others?

Why? Dear Reader: We tend to think about the ravages of addiction mainly when it takes a celebrity from us. Recently the actor Philip Seymour Hoffman died, at 46, of an apparent overdose of heroin. In 2012, it was the singer Whitney Houston, at 49.

Both were once-in-a-generation talents – and both gone, just like that.

The use of illicit drugs and alcohol takes the lives of nearly 300 people every day in the United States. (Tobacco takes more than 1,000 every day.) Though most did not become famous in the way that Philip Seymour Hoffman and Whitney Houston were, each had friends and family who mourn their passing.

Fortunately, not every person who drinks alcohol or tries drugs becomes dependent. Why, then, do some people develop addiction while others do not?

Our genes account for about half of our risk for addiction. The environment in which people grow up and their personal histories also play an important role. People who were abused or neglected as children, for

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff example, have a higher risk of developing addiction than children who were nurtured. People with mental illness are also particularly vulnerable.

Still, although some people are more at risk for addiction than others, nobody is immune to addiction. That’s because we are all wired to respond similarly to rewards.

The brain registers all forms of pleasure in the same way: by releasing the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain. That’s true whether the pleasure originates with a drug, a monetary reward, sex or a satisfying meal.

(I’ve put an illustration of this reward pathway on my website, AskDoctorK.com.) But drugs of abuse, such as nicotine or heroin, release two to 10 times the amount of dopamine as do natural rewards – and they do it more quickly and more reliably.

It’s possible that people who get hooked more easily have a more robust dopamine response.

In some way, they are “wired differently.”

I saw Philip Seymour Hoffman play Willy Loman in “Death of a Salesman.” As the play opened, the stage was unlit. At the far left was a luminous blue light, like the sky at the end of a clear day. A man carrying a briefcase in each hand, Loman, is seen in silhouette. He is stooped, trudging slowly, as dejected as a person can be. The road had not been kind. No one was buying.

He opens the door to his home, his family waiting for him inside.

Suddenly, he is the salesman: confident, jostling with his sons, talking about what a success the trip had been. Playing the role he had to play, to avoid taking his own life.

I will remember that entrance, and many other moments from Hoffman’s films, all of my life.

Acting doesn’t get any better.

Gone, just like that.

We have to solve the plague of addiction, and we will. In the past 20 years, scientists have learned a lot about the brain chemistry of addiction. That knowledge will lead to better treatments.

Dr. Wallace: Our high school has started a new club on campus, Students Against Drunk Driving. Its main purpose is to educate students about the dangers of drinking and driving. I have joined this club and have been elected vice president.

My main duty is to put out a blurb to the student body about drinking and driving.

Since SADD is a national organization, I will be getting much data and information from its headquarters.

But our supply of materials hasn’t arrived yet, so I would appreciate any information that would provide a “wake-up” to those students who might drink and then drive. – Gina, Philadelphia, Pa. Dear Gina: A federal study reported that over 17,000 people were killed last year in alcohol- or drug-related automobile crashes, and a high percentage of them were teens. The report also reported that a staggering 28 percent of the nation’s estimated 166 million drivers, regularly or sometimes, consume alcohol or drugs within two hours of driving.

The study also found that driving after drug use is more common among male drivers 16 to 20.

Your school should be commended for having SADD on campus. Every high school and college should have a chapter of SADD. Learning about the destruction caused by drinking and driving is of great importance.

Dr. Wallace: My parents are outrageously strict. I’m 15 and treated like I’m a young child and watched like a hawk. Prisoners have more freedom than I do. Simply put, I am not permitted to do anything unless I’m with my parents. Their philosophy is

Part of good parenting is knowing when to let go and begin trusting a child with gradually increasing freedom and responsibility. All children eventually grow up.

Those who have never been allowed to make their own choices will surely exercise poor judgment when freedom arrives all at once.

You and your parents need to talk. If you’re on the brink of despising them, that’s a signal they need to review the restrictive rules they’ve laid down for you.

Dr. Wallace: You said that sidestream smoke (smoke coming from the tip of a lit cigarette) is more dangerous to a person’s health than smoke exhaled by a smoker.

I’m writing a paper on the health hazards of smoking and would like to know why sidestream smoke is worse than exhaled smoke. – Hannah, Kansas City, Mo. Dear Hannah: The information came from the Canadian Lung Association, which reported that there is twice as much tar and nicotine in sidestream smoke as in exhaled smoke. This is because a percentage of tar and nicotine stays in the body of the smoker after exhaling.

Dear Abby: I’m a single mother of a beautiful 2-year-old daughter.

I have always pictured myself as a mom of four little princesses.

Now I’m expecting a little boy and I feel heartbroken. When I learned my first was a girl, I couldn’t wait to meet her. I bought her everything pink and frilly. Here I am eight weeks from my due date, and I have yet to buy this baby a single thing.

When I look at baby boy items, I become severely depressed.

I’m no longer with the baby’s father. He and his family are very excited about the baby, as he will be the only male grandchild for this generation. The truth is, the more I think about it, the more I am pulled in the direction of signing over my parental rights to my ex. At least he really wants him, whereas I don’t.

In bridge, you can rarely use the words always and never. But “two” is relevant to this deal.

What is the outcome in three no-trump after West leads his fourth-highest heart?

If you and your partner play regularly together, discuss using minor-suit transfers, although they come up rarely. Here, North could show game-going values, long diamonds and a singleton (or void) in hearts. These transfers are described on my website.

South starts with seven top tricks: two spades, two diamonds and three clubs. He will work on diamonds to get (at least) two more winners. Yes, he could lose four hearts and one diamond first – but only if West makes two good plays.

After East wins the first trick with his heart ace, he returns the nine, the higher of two remaining cards. This should tell West that South started with four hearts (or five, but then the contract would be unbeatable). When trying to establish a suit in which an opponent will get one trick, give it to him as quickly as possible. So, West must duck the second trick.

South will then cash his diamond ace. West needs to realize that East has to win a trick for another heart lead through South, and if that entry card is the diamond jack, West must unblock his queen. If he does not, declarer lets West win the second diamond with his queen and the contract makes with at least one overtrick.

(If South has the diamond jack, West’s play is irrelevant.)

When West throws away his diamond queen, the contract must fail.
